NPP’s JFK, Gideon Boako engage Fulani residents in Tano North

During the meeting, Justin Frimpong Kodua, affectionately known as JFK, introduced Dr. Boako as the ideal representative for the constituency.

“Dr. Boako is a man of integrity, a brilliant economist, and he understands your needs,” Mr. Kodua stated. “He holds a special place in his heart for the Fulani community and is committed to addressing your concerns and challenges.”

  • Ofankor–Nsawam residents to have access to good road by end of Sept. after 2 years

Ofankor–Nsawam residents to have access to good road by end of Sept. after 2 years

Residents and commuters along the Ofankor–Nsawam road can anticipate much-needed relief as the main carriageway from the Ofankor-China Mall stretch, excluding the Amasaman Interchange area, is set to be opened to traffic by the end of September 2024.

Chief Resident Engineer for the project, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, assured that the construction team is “working assiduously to complete sections of the project and open to traffic to reduce the current negative impact on the travelling public by the end of September.”

Ing. Bempong made these remarks during an inspection of the project by President Nana Akufo-Addo, who was accompanied by Mr Francis Asenso-Boakye and Mohammed Amin Adam.

The $346.5 million road improvement project is co-financed by the government and Maripoma Enterprise Limited, a fully Ghanaian-owned firm, which is undertaking the project under a Design and Build Contract with Associated Consultants Limited overseeing the work.

The 33.4-kilometre road project commenced in July 2022 with an original completion target of July this year. As of July, about 60 per cent of the work had been completed, compelling the construction firm to request a year extension. The recent update goes to suggest that the year extension may no longer be required.

The President has expressed his satisfaction with the quality of work being done and has urged the contractor to ensure that the project delivers value for money for the people of Ghana.

In a related development, the Flowerpot Interchange Project, which currently stands at 92% completion, is expected to be substantially completed by the end of October this year.

This project aims to improve the lives of commuters traveling from the northern to the southern sections of the Accra-Tema Motorway, alleviate congestion at the Flowerpot Intersection along the Spintex Road, and provide a direct route to Accra East from Burma Camp and its surroundings to East Legon and vice versa.

President Akufo-Addo commended the progress made, expressing his satisfaction with the quality of work done on both projects.

These infrastructural developments are set to significantly enhance the travel experience and connectivity for residents and commuters in the affected areas.

We must partner with men to lead, provide the solutions for Ghana – Nana Oye tells women

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has called on women to persist in their efforts to overcome challenges, emphasizing the need for collaboration with men to ensure Ghana’s continued progress and development.

During an appearance on the JoyNews AM show, Nana Oye acknowledged the difficulties women face in the political arena, where participants often encounter abuse and derogatory treatment.

However, she stressed the importance of resilience and focus, urging women to stay determined despite these obstacles.

“If it is really the middle-income status that we want, we do not have a choice—irrespective of the insults, irrespective of the denigration. We must move forward, focus, and partner with men to lead and provide the solutions that will help the people of Ghana live meaningful lives, get jobs, and put three meals on the table,” she stated.

Nana Oye highlighted the need for a collaborative approach involving the government, civil society, and traditional leaders to address the barriers that prevent women from fully contributing their talents to Ghana’s development.

She pointed out that education is crucial in empowering women, acknowledging the progress made while emphasizing that much work remains to be done.

She also noted that cultural and social norms play a significant role in the challenges women face. Drawing attention to a traditional proverb, “it is the cock that crows to announce the dawn,” she explained that women’s public voices are often not accepted as normal, which contributes to the obstacles they encounter.

“That is why we ask the political parties to support women to give of themselves, and I know they would do that. In the NDC, that is being done a lot. You see a lot of mentoring; our political leaders, even at the national level, at all levels, partner with women and encourage women to take up branch positions. You see young women taking up key positions, and that is very welcome. We just have to move,” she added.

Nana Oye’s message was clear: women must continue to push forward, partnering with men to lead and offer solutions that will drive Ghana’s progress and ensure a better future for all.

    Toney joins Saudi club Al-Ahli

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has completed his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, with the transfer officially confirmed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 28-year-old forward’s departure follows Brentford’s acceptance of a bid in the region of £40 million, marking the end of Toney’s four-year tenure with the Bees.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank expressed his admiration for Toney’s contributions, highlighting his remarkable goal-scoring record.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with Ivan over the last four years,” Frank stated.

“He has averaged more than one goal every two games, which is an unbelievable number. On the pitch, he has been a fantastic goalscorer, link-up player, and leader. He has pushed the team, the squad, and himself.”

Frank also paid tribute to Toney’s legacy at Brentford, adding, “Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend.”

Toney’s international experience includes being part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2024, where he made three appearances as a substitute. Notably, he scored a penalty in the shootout victory over Switzerland, displaying his composure by staring down the goalkeeper before calmly finding the net.

During the 2022-23 Premier League season, Toney netted 20 goals, further establishing himself as one of the league’s top strikers. After returning from an eight-month suspension for breaching FA betting rules, he continued his goal-scoring form, scoring four times in his first five matches last season.

However, Toney was not included in interim England manager Lee Carsley’s squad for the September Nations League games, despite having earned six caps and one goal for the national team.

Honour Busia by voting for Bawumia – Napo tells Wenchi residents

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO has urged the people of Wenchi in the Bono Region to honour the legacy of former Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia by supporting the NPP in the upcoming 2024 elections.

During a campaign visit to Wenchi, NAPO paid tribute to the late Dr. Busia, laying a wreath in his memory and calling on the community to secure a victory for the party.

Wenchi, a town with deep ties to the NPP’s political tradition, holds historical significance as the birthplace of Dr. Busia, a key figure in the formation of the Progress Party, which later evolved into the NPP.

NAPO emphasized that voting for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, would be a fitting tribute to Dr. Busia’s contributions to the nation and the party.

Engaging with local chiefs, the clergy, Muslims, and residents during his tour, NAPO urged them to pray for the NPP and to provide guidance to the party in its service to the people.

He reminded the Wenchi constituency, traditionally an NPP stronghold until it was won by the NDC in 2020, of the need to reclaim the seat as a continuation of Dr. Busia’s legacy.

NAPO encouraged the residents to reflect on the achievements of the NPP government and to vote decisively for Dr. Bawumia and the party’s parliamentary candidate for the area, Kojo Frempong, in the December elections.

Mr. Frempong, in turn, expressed his dedication to reclaiming the seat for the NPP and called for the support of the chiefs and the people to ensure a resounding victory.

The Omanhene of Wenchi, Nana Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, praised NAPO for his contributions during his tenure in government and highlighted the challenges facing the community, appealing for continued government support to address these issues.

  • Sancho joins Chelsea on loan

    Sancho joins Chelsea on loan

Chelsea have secured the services of Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho on loan until the end of the season.

The deal, which includes an obligation for Chelsea to make the move permanent next summer for a fee between £20-25 million, offers the England international a fresh start after a challenging period at Old Trafford.

Sancho, who joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021 for £73 million, has struggled to find his footing at the club.

Despite making 83 appearances across three full seasons, his time at United was marred by a high-profile dispute with manager Erik ten Hag, resulting in Sancho being excluded from first-team training.

After a brief loan spell back at Borussia Dortmund in January, Sancho returned to Manchester United in the summer but has not featured in either of their Premier League matches this season.

The 24-year-old, whose last appearance for England came in 2021, was notably left out of the squad for both the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the upcoming Euro 2024.

Sekyere Hemang treatment plant shut to ‘crash’ over pollution – GWCL

The Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region faces an imminent shutdown due to severe pollution of its water sources, warns Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the Communications Manager for the Western and Central regions of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Mr. Barnie expressed deep concern over the alarming state of water bodies in the region, highlighting the critical situation during an interview on Top Story on Friday, August 30.

Mr. Barnie lamented the prioritization of monetary gain over public health, stating that the pollution of drinking water sources is tantamount to poisoning the population.

“We are treating water and getting only a quarter of the capacity of the plant… People will now have to be running helter-skelter looking for where they can get water,” he cautioned, indicating that the situation is nearing a breaking point.

The ongoing illegal mining activities, commonly known as “galamsey,” have severely contaminated the Pra River, which serves as the primary source of raw water for the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant.

The extent of the pollution has rendered traditional water treatment methods, such as the use of aluminum sulfate, ineffective.

Mr. Barnie revealed that the GWCL has been forced to adopt more expensive alternatives like polyelectrolyte, significantly increasing the cost of water treatment.

“We are spending four times more than what we were spending in the past when we were using alum. We are now spending four times more now that we are using polyelectrolyte because that is more expensive,” he explained.

The challenges have already led to disruptions in water supply to Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities, as announced by the Central Regional Office of the GWCL in a press statement on Friday, August 30.

The statement noted that the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant is currently operating at only a quarter of its installed capacity, producing about 7,500m³/day, a drastic reduction that has caused significant inconvenience to customers.

Given the current trajectory, Mr. Barnie warned that the situation could deteriorate further, leading to a complete shutdown of the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant.

He stressed that if the pollution is not addressed urgently, the GWCL may no longer be able to continue treating water in the region, leaving residents without a reliable source of clean water.

The potential shutdown of the Sekyere Hemang plant underscores the urgent need for effective measures to combat illegal mining and protect water bodies in Ghana.

Without immediate intervention, the region could face a severe water crisis, forcing residents to scramble for alternative sources of drinking water.

  • There is an economic value in brain drain, let’s take advantage of it – Tsatsu Tsikata

There is an economic value in brain drain, let’s take advantage of it – Tsatsu Tsikata

Renowned lawyer and academic, Tsatsu Tsikata, has emphasized the significant economic opportunities that can be derived from the phenomenon of brain drain, urging Ghana to capitalize on the contributions of its diaspora rather than lament the loss of talent.

Speaking at the 14th Leadership Dialogue organized by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), Mr. Tsikata presented a perspective that sees the mass exodus of Ghanaians seeking greener pastures abroad as an economic asset that can be harnessed for national development.

“In my mind, yes, there is a brain drain, and some people are desperate to leave the country, and this is not the first time people have left the country in droves. It has happened before,” Tsikata remarked.

He further explained that while many professional bodies have expressed concern over the loss of skilled personnel, the focus should also be on the potential benefits that the diaspora can bring to the economy.

Mr. Tsikata highlighted the significant role of remittances from Ghanaians abroad, pointing out that the financial inflows from the diaspora often surpass the revenues generated from the country’s natural resources.

“When you look at the amount of remittances that are sent by Ghanaians abroad, in terms of foreign exchange, it usually exceeds any of these natural resources that we export,” he stated, underscoring the economic value that the diaspora brings to Ghana.

According to Mr. Tsikata, the nation should shift its mindset to view the diaspora as a strategic economic asset. He suggested that the funds sent home by Ghanaians abroad could be more effectively utilized to support the country’s development.

“Let’s look at the fact that we can harness the resource value that comes from their being there,” he proposed, encouraging a more proactive approach to engaging the diaspora community.

Rather than focusing solely on the challenges associated with brain drain, Tsikata believes Ghana should explore ways to leverage the economic potential of its citizens abroad.

He emphasized that the relationship between Ghanaians in the diaspora and their homeland is one that holds immense value and should be cultivated to benefit the nation.

Mr. Tsikata called for a broader perspective on the issue of brain drain, urging stakeholders to recognize and harness the economic contributions of Ghanaians abroad as a key component of the country’s growth strategy.

Rename GAUA to GAUPA to address recognition issues – UG Vice-Chancellor

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has proposed a name change of Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) to address the challenge of recognition.

In her response as the Chairperson for Association’s 3-day national congress, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the Ghana Association of University Professionals and Administrators (GAUPA) would best fit as it indicates the role of professionalism by the Association.

This comes after government’s posture toward non-teaching senior members was raised as a concern by the outgoing GAUA president, Dr. Mrs. Beth Offei-Awuku.

Dr. Mrs. Beth Offei-Awuku explained that there is a significant challenge in the government’s understanding of the unique needs of university administrators and professionals.

She attributed this to the poor representation of administrative and professional senior members at the governance level within the tertiary education landscape.

“The leadership of the government agencies are all drawn from the university teaching arm and have skewed commitments to them. We need representation in the corridors of power for the non-teaching senior members to be heard adequately,” she noted.

The outgoing president also noted that the diversity of professionals in the association has yet to be fully harnessed, as there still exists significant apathy, which adversely affects group thinking and solidarity within GAUA.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo called for unity among members of GAUA. She explained that a break away will not allow GAUA to achieve its aim for a better condition of service. She advised the mother association to be more inclusive.

Members of the Ghana Association of Univeristy Administrators (GAUA) on Friday, August 30, conveyed at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon, as part of the Association’s 3-day national congress to review its conditions of service and adoption, as well as swear-in incoming executives.

The theme for this year’s congress is “Balancing Growth and Sustainability in Expanding Public Universities – The Role of GAUA.”

The congress saw hundreds in attendance as sister associations including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSAG) graced the event.

The fight for stakeholder recognition of GAUA in the senior member category of public universities is ongoing and requires strategic planning with stronger negotiations to bridge the existing gaps.

GAUA experienced a nationwide strike from November 29, 2023, to February 8, 2024. Strikes had not been seen from the association in the last decade or more. The association has fought for better conditions of service.

The leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) have reached an agreement on some of the concerns.

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) continues its national congress, which commenced on Thursday, August 29, and is slated to end on Saturday, August 31.

Sister associations gracing the event include the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), among others.

The theme for this year’s congress is “Balancing Growth and Sustainability in Expanding Public Universities – The Role of GAUA.”

Leverage AI to gain valuable insights; it won’t replace you – Consultant Administrator to GAUA

Consultant Administrator, Mrs. Mildred Asmah, has made a passionate call to the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), highlighting the need to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), to ensure growth in skills and enhance efficiency in their works.

In her address as the keynote speaker second day of the GAUA Congress at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on Friday, the 62-year-old pensioner indicated that AI has emerged as a transformative technology, impacting various sectors including Higher Education and the economics of Information Technology.

According to Mrs Asmah, AI has the potential to revolutionize higher education, personalize learning experiences, automate administrative tasks, and support research activities.

The Vice President for projects at Graduate Women International, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, allayed the fears of many who assert that their role will be taken by AI.

“AI is not going to replace us administrators but make our lives easier,” she emphasised.

She mentioned that leveraging AI to gain valuable insights will provide administrators free time to focus
on the creative human aspects of their roles.

The rapid advancements in AI, particularly in machine learning and natural language processing, have enabled the development of intelligent systems that can perform tasks previously requiring human intelligence.

The integration of AI in Higher Education has gained significant attention in recent years with universities exploring various application, such as adaptive learning systems, chatbots for student support and AI powered tools.

We need to break the apathy – GAUA President charges members

Outgoing President of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Dr. Mrs. Beth Offei-Awuku, has urged members of the association to show greater interest in the many activities the organization engages in.

Speaking on the second day of the GAUA Congress at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on Friday, she noted that the diversity of professionals in the association has yet to be fully harnessed, as there still exists significant apathy, which adversely affects group thinking and solidarity within GAUA.

She added, “The dichotomy of administrators and professionals with inherent complexes of recognition needs redress.”

The apathy appears to be a result of the threatened breakaway of aggrieved professionals within the Association who aim to form a new union.

    GAUA members

Over 500 members of GAUA, dissatisfied with the compromised conditions of service, particularly concerning their categories, have come together to form a splinter group of professionals, seemingly to advocate for themselves going forward.

Their leadership has been approached, and talks are ongoing to address the challenges of these aggrieved members.

“We can only hope that this split is reconsidered for the good of both parties,” Dr. Mrs. Beth Offei-Awuku expressed.

Dr. Offei-Awuku further emphasized that leveraging diversity would place GAUA on a better footing to achieve more.

As part of her recommendations, she stressed the need for GAUA to contribute to national discourse and engage with stakeholders.

  • Your ‘healthcare’ men are incompetent – Nana Aba slams Akufo-Addo over Korle-Bu-elevator saga

Your ‘healthcare’ men are incompetent – Nana Aba slams Akufo-Addo over Korle-Bu-elevator saga

Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has sharply criticized President Akufo-Addo for appointing what she describes as “incompetent” individuals to manage the country’s healthcare system.

Her remarks come in response to the ongoing crisis at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), where elective surgeries have been suspended, and emergency cases temporarily relocated due to persistent issues with the lifts at the hospital’s surgical block.

In a post on X, Nana Aba expressed her dismay at the situation, labeling it a catastrophic failure on the part of the government. She indicated that the mechanical issue, as basic as an elevator malfunction, should not be allowed to jeopardize lives.

“Good evening, @NAkufoAddo. I don’t want to call the men you appointed to take care of our healthcare incompetent but if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it is definitely a duck. This is a catastrophic failure! It’s unacceptable and EVIL,” she wrote.

The challenges at KBTH have severely affected the hospital’s operations. According to a statement from Professor J. E. Mensah of the Surgical Department, the issues with the lifts have hindered the movement of patients between floors in the surgical tower, directly impacting the ability to perform surgeries.

“Given the current situation, we have decided to suspend all elective surgeries until further notice. During this period, we will focus solely on emergency cases to ensure that critical care is not compromised,” the statement noted.

The statement also outlined temporary measures, including carrying out emergency surgeries at alternative locations within the hospital, such as the Ground Floor Surgical (Neuro), Accident Centre, Pediatric, and Gynaecology theatres. Patients requiring surgery will be admitted to Ward G, Ward N, Ward A, and Ward B.

KBTH assured the public that efforts are underway to replace one lift and refurbish the other, with the procurement process currently in progress.

The hospital says it is working to complete the necessary repairs as quickly as possible to minimize disruption and resume normal operations.

    Lukaku completes Napoli move

SSC Napoli has officially announced the acquisition of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku on a permanent transfer from Chelsea.

The move brings an end to Lukaku’s tenure at Chelsea and marks the beginning of a new chapter in Serie A for the prolific forward.

Lukaku, born on May 13, 1993, in Antwerp, Belgium, is 31 years old and stands at an imposing 191 cm. Known for his powerful presence on the pitch, Lukaku has been a dominant force in European football for over a decade.

He has consistently reached double figures in goals across 11 of the last 12 seasons in the top five European leagues, with the only exception being the 2021/22 season at Chelsea, where he managed eight goals.

Throughout his career, Lukaku has scored 224 goals in 480 league appearances, showcasing his remarkable consistency and goal-scoring ability. His international career has been equally impressive, with 85 goals in 119 appearances for Belgium.

One of the most notable periods in Lukaku’s career came under the guidance of coach Antonio Conte, who oversaw 47 of his goals in just 72 appearances, averaging a goal every 125 minutes.

Lukaku’s time in Serie A has also been marked by success, particularly during his tenure at Inter Milan. He has netted 70 goals in 129 Serie A appearances, with his best season being in 2020/21, where he scored 24 goals under Conte’s leadership.

Fans will be eager to see if the Belgian can replicate his previous success in Serie A and help Napoli achieve their ambitions in the upcoming season.

  • Munich’s Fußball Arena München to host 2025 UCL final

Munich’s Fußball Arena München to host 2025 UCL final

Munich’s Fußball Arena München is set to host the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League final, the pinnacle of European club football.

The final, scheduled for Saturday, May 31, 2025, marks the return of the prestigious event to the German city for the first time since 2012.

The Fußball Arena München, an architectural marvel located on Werner-Heisenberg-Allee, has been a significant landmark in European football since its completion on April 30, 2005.

Built in less than three years, the stadium was the result of a public referendum in October 2001, where 65.8% of Munich’s citizens voted in favor of constructing a new arena rather than refurbishing the historic Olympiastadion, the venue for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games.

Originally a joint venture between local rivals Bayern München and 1860 München, the stadium has been solely owned by Bayern since 2005.

The arena quickly became a stage for unforgettable football moments, including hosting the opening match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where Germany triumphed over Costa Rica. The stadium also saw action in three group stage matches, a round of 16 clash, and a thrilling semi-final where France edged out Portugal.

One of the most dramatic nights in the stadium’s history came during the 2012 UEFA Champions League final. Chelsea, against all odds, overcame Bayern München on penalties, despite the German side enjoying home advantage. This marked the last time Munich hosted the final before 2025.

The Fußball Arena München has continued to be a central figure in European football, most recently hosting three group stage matches involving Germany and Italy’s 2-1 quarter-final victory against Belgium during UEFA EURO 2020. Remarkably, it will become the first stadium in history to host matches in consecutive UEFA European Championships, as it is also a venue for UEFA EURO 2024.

With a seating capacity of 66,000 for UEFA EURO 2024, the stadium is renowned for its distinctive transparent outer wall, composed of foil panels that can change color depending on the team playing.

Munich’s football legacy extends beyond the Fußball Arena München. The city’s Olympiastadion previously hosted three European Champion Clubs’ Cup finals, including Nottingham Forest’s 1979 victory over Malmö, Marseille’s 1993 triumph against AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund’s 1997 win over Juventus.

The upcoming 2025 Champions League final will mark the culmination of the 70th season of Europe’s elite club competition and the 33rd since its rebranding as the UEFA Champions League.

With its rich history and state-of-the-art facilities, the Fußball Arena München is poised to deliver yet another unforgettable chapter in the annals of European football.

We see the horrifying revelations of corruption, mismanagement of resources – Group tells govt

Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), a prominent civic group representing civil society organizations and concerned citizens, has issued a stern warning to the government, declaring that their patience has run out amid the ongoing economic crisis.

The group expressed deep frustration over what they perceive as the government’s failure to address the deteriorating economic conditions affecting the nation.

During a press conference on Thursday, August 29, 2024, ORAL highlighted the severe impact of the crisis on ordinary Ghanaians, pointing to skyrocketing inflation, rising unemployment rates, and a rapidly depreciating currency as critical issues pushing the population to the brink.

Osman Ayariga, one of the conveners of the group, lamented that despite repeated pleas for intervention, the government’s response has been inadequate, leaving the populace to suffer the consequences. He emphasized that the group’s patience has reached its limit and warned of potential nationwide protests if the government does not take immediate and decisive action to stabilize the economy.

“It is our conviction that the least the Ministry of Finance can do, after having subjected Ghanaians to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, is to ensure prudence in the management of our scarce resources,” Ayariga stated.

“A proactive response to the above-stated demands would be appreciated by the Ghanaian people more than the apology the minister purported to offer to the many Ghanaians affected by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.”

ORAL stressed that the current economic situation, compounded by revelations of corruption and resource mismanagement, has brought the country to a breaking point. The group expressed their dismay at the daily reports of graft and inefficiency, which they believe could have been prevented with better governance.

Group’s Convener, Osman Ayariga (in red)

“We have reached the zenith of our patience as Ghanaian youth as we wake up daily to the horrifying revelations of corruption and mismanagement of resources that could have been prudently invested in our present and future,” Ayariga continued.

The group called on the government to implement urgent measures to control inflation, create jobs, and restore confidence in the national currency, warning that failure to do so could lead to social unrest. ORAL also urged the government to engage with stakeholders across various sectors to develop a comprehensive plan to tackle the economic crisis.

“The recent revelations of mismanagement and corruption associated with the hosting of the All-African Games signal the unwillingness of public officials to stop their appetite for corruption,” Ayariga added. “We have come to the realization that the current managers of our economy are only concerned about their livelihoods and that of their children, with little regard for the collective aspirations of the Ghanaian people.”

Have you drunk urine before? – Angry NPP supporter quizzes Dumelo

An outspoken supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern warning to John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, questioning his resilience in the face of challenges.

During a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” the supporter, Mr. Amponsah, expressed his frustration with what he perceived as threats from Dumelo in the ongoing political campaign.

Mr. Amponsah, who spoke passionately during the program, challenged Dumelo’s fortitude, comparing it to the hardships he and other NPP supporters have endured. He recounted their difficult experiences, particularly surviving in the desert where they were forced to drink urine to stay alive.

“I want to tell John Dumelo… all your talks are threats… We were those in the desert and had to drink urine. Has he drunk urine before? Enough of your threats. One day, monkey will go to the market and monkey will not return,” Mr. Amponsah declared, emphasizing that NPP supporters would not be intimidated by Dumelo’s rhetoric.

The Independent Ghana has not found any evidence to suggest that Dumelo has issued threats to constituents as claimed by Mr. Amponsah.

In a related development, John Dumelo has recently come under fire for comments he made about Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the NPP Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon. During the same “Community Watch” program, Dumelo insinuated that Alhassan may have been involved in her husband’s death to secure political power. His remarks were a reaction to NPP supporters who had taunted him with references to the “V8 saga.”

Dumelo’s comments sparked outrage on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), leading to widespread condemnation. In response to the backlash, Dumelo issued an apology and retracted his statement, acknowledging that his words were inappropriate and expressing regret for any offense caused.

“I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP. That is it because if they want to go that tangent, I can also go the same tangent. If they want to go that tangent, I will go the same tangent because this time around, it is boot for boot,” Dumelo had said during the broadcast.

However, following the public outcry, Dumelo took to X to issue his apology, stating, “I apologise and retract the comments I made earlier today on TV3.”

  • Cedi depreciated by 21.5% against the dollar as of August 25 – Amin Adam

Cedi depreciated by 21.5% against the dollar as of August 25 – Amin Adam

The Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by 21.5% against the US dollar as of August 25, 2024, according to the Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam. This development comes despite efforts to stabilize the currency through various economic measures.

During a press engagement on Thursday, August 29, 2024, Dr. Amin Adam provided an update on the cedi’s performance and other key economic indicators. He highlighted that although the cedi has experienced depreciation, there have been improvements compared to previous years.

For instance, the depreciation rate moderated to 27.8% in December 2023, down from 54% in November 2022. Additionally, the cedi’s depreciation rate in the first quarter of 2024 was 7.7%, significantly lower than the 22.1% recorded in the same period of 2023.

“The cedi cumulatively depreciated by 18.6% against the US dollar at the end of June 2024, compared to 22% in the same period in 2023,” Dr. Amin Adam explained.

He further noted that the month-on-month depreciation rate showed signs of improvement, decreasing from 6.1% in May 2024 to 3.1% in June 2024, and further to 2.1% in July 2024.

“If this trend continues, I can assure you that our cedi will continue to hold against the major currencies,” he added.

The Finance Minister attributed the cedi’s relative stability to several factors, including the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policies, strong fiscal consolidation, the Gold for Oil programme, and the Bank of Ghana’s gold for reserves initiative.

Other contributing measures include the centralised platform for foreign exchange bureaus, implementation of the dynamic cash reserve ratio to absorb excess liquidity, revised regulations on advanced payments of imports, and positive market sentiments following the disbursement of the third tranche of the IMF extended credit facility.

In addition to the cedi’s performance, Dr. Amin Adam also discussed the country’s inflation trends, particularly in relation to imported goods. Imported inflation, which refers to the increase in prices of goods and services brought into the country due to factors such as exchange rates and global market conditions, declined by 1.9 percentage points to 15.6% in July 2024, down from 17.5% in June 2024.

This reduction in imported inflation contributed to the overall decline in Ghana’s inflation rate, which dropped to 20.9% in July from 22.8% in June 2024.

The Finance Minister noted that the decline in food and non-food prices played a significant role in the overall inflation decrease. Food inflation fell by 2.5 percentage points to 21.5% in July, while non-food inflation declined by 1.1 percentage points to 20.5% during the same period.

  • Imported inflation declined by 1.9% to 15.6% in July – Finance Minister

Imported inflation declined by 1.9% to 15.6% in July – Finance Minister

Inflation for imported items in Ghana declined by 1.9 percentage points, settling at 15.6% in July 2024, down from 17.5% in June 2024, according to the Minister for Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam.

This was revealed during a press engagement on Thursday, August 29, 2024, where the Minister highlighted the country’s economic progress.

Imported inflation refers to the increase in the prices of goods and services that are brought into the country from abroad. This form of inflation is influenced by factors such as exchange rates, global market conditions, and tariffs, which can affect the cost of imports.

Overall inflation in Ghana also showed improvement, with the rate declining to 20.9% in July 2024 from 22.8% in June 2024. The month-on-month inflation rate decreased from 2.9% in June to 2.1% in July, largely due to a slowdown in the prices of both food and non-food items.

Dr. Amin Adam noted that food inflation saw a significant drop, declining by 2.5 percentage points to 21.5% in July from 24% in June. Similarly, non-food inflation fell by 1.1 percentage points, from 21.6% in June to 20.5% in July.

In addition to these positive inflation trends, the Ghanaian cedi has shown relative stability against major trading currencies since 2023. The Finance Minister pointed out that while the cedi experienced some recent pressures, these have since subsided. The depreciation of the cedi against the US dollar improved from 54% in November 2022 to 27.8% in December 2023, compared to 30% in December 2022.

“The year-to-year depreciation of the cedi moderated to 7.7% in the first quarter of 2024, compared to 22.1% in the same period in 2023. The cedi cumulatively depreciated by 18.6% against the US dollar at the end of June 2024, compared to 22% in the same period in 2023,” Dr. Amin Adam explained.

As of August 25, 2024, the cedi had depreciated by 21.5% against the US dollar, slightly better than the 22.1% recorded in the same period in 2023. The Finance Minister expressed optimism about the cedi’s future performance, noting that the month-on-month depreciation improved significantly from 6.1% in May 2024 to 3.1% in June 2024, and further to 2.1% in July 2024.

“If this trend continues, I can assure you that our cedi will continue to hold against the major currencies,” Dr. Amin Adam said.

He attributed the stabilisation of the cedi to several factors, including the Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy, strong fiscal consolidation, the Gold for Oil programme, and the Bank of Ghana’s gold for reserves programme. Additional measures include the centralised platform for foreign exchange bureaus, the implementation of the dynamic cash reserve ratio to absorb excess liquidity, and revised regulations on advanced payments of imports. Positive market sentiments following the disbursement of the third tranche of the IMF extended credit facility have also played a role in supporting the cedi’s stability.

Advocacy group threatens to picket at Finance Ministry over SML and Ambulance deals

Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), an advocacy group, has announced plans to picket at the Ministry of Finance over concerns related to the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) contract and the national ambulance deal.

The group is demanding greater transparency and accountability from the government regarding these critical agreements.

ORAL has raised serious questions about the SML contract, which was designed to enhance revenue assurance in the petroleum sector.

According to the group’s Convener, Osman Ayariga, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) entered into the contract without securing the necessary approvals from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and Parliament. These alleged irregularities were highlighted in a recent audit report by KPMG.

In addition to the SML contract, ORAL is also scrutinizing the government’s handling of the national ambulance deal. The group alleges that the procurement process for the ambulances, intended to improve emergency healthcare delivery across the country, lacked transparency and may have involved inflated costs. ORAL is calling for a thorough investigation to ensure that public funds were used appropriately.

To draw attention to these issues and press the government for answers, ORAL has announced plans to picket at the Ministry of Finance on September 4, 2024.

The group is calling on civil society organizations and concerned citizens to join the protest, emphasizing the need for greater accountability in managing public resources.

“As a result, on the 4th of September 2024 (04/09/2024), the ORAL Brigade will be assembling at the Ministry of Finance to voice our demands and ensure that our concerns are heard. Our purpose is to urge the Minister of Finance to take immediate action to investigate these matters thoroughly, halt any questionable payments, and recover funds where necessary,” Osman Ayariga stated during a press conference on Thursday, August 29.

He added, “We believe that this picketing is vital to restore public confidence in our financial management systems and to reinforce the principle that public resources must be managed with the highest levels of integrity and transparency. This is just the first of many planned protests by the nation-conscious ORAL Brigade aimed at demanding accountability in public financial management.”

Monkey will go to the market and not return – NPP supporter threatens Dumelo

A supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has threatened the life of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo.

During a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” Mr Amponsah alleged that Dumelo has been issuing threats as part of his campaign.

He noted that the NPP supporters will not cower to any form of intimidation. According to him, he and others have been through hard times in the desert where they were forced to drink urine to survive.

“I want to tell John Dumelo… all your talks are threats…. we were those in the desert and had to drink urine. Has he drunk urine before? Enough of your threats. One day, monkey will go to the market and monkey will not return,” he said.

As it stands now, The Independent Ghana has not come across any video or information that suggests that Mr Dumelo has been issuing threats to constituents.

In a related event, Dumelo has issued an apology for his recent accusations against Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency.

During a segment on TV3’s “Community Watch,” Dumelo implied that Alhassan may have been involved in her husband’s death to gain political power.

His remarks came after NPP supporters taunted him with references to the “V8 saga” during his speech. Dumelo has since retracted his statements and expressed regret for his unfounded claims.

He said, “I want to say something. I can see their supporters have been mentioning V8, V8, V8. If that is the case, then it is also fair to say that maybe Lydia is the one who killed her husband to become MP.

That is it because if they want to go that tangent, I can also go the same tangent. If they want to go that tangent, I will go the same tangent because this time around, it is boot for boot.”

John Dumelo’s recent remarks about Lydia Seyram Alhassan did not go down well with many social media users, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).

Facing backlash for his comments, Dumelo responded by taking to X to issue an apology.

He acknowledged his mistake and expressed regret for the statement he made during the TV3 “Community Watch” program, aiming to clear the air and mend relations with those offended by his words.

“I apologise and retract the comments I made earlier today on TV3,” he said.

  • Everything you need to know about the contagious Rubella outbreak in the Volta Region

Everything you need to know about the contagious Rubella outbreak in the Volta Region

The Volta Region is currently facing a concerning rise in Rubella cases, alongside reports of measles outbreaks in several districts.

This surge has coincided with a significant number of children—9,495 in the first half of this year—missing their Measles-Rubella vaccinations, which has heightened public health concerns.

Rubella, a highly contagious viral disease, spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While most children and adults experience only mild symptoms such as fever and rash, the disease is particularly dangerous for pregnant women.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), if a woman contracts rubella early in her pregnancy, there is a 90% chance that she will pass the virus to her fetus, leading to severe complications.

“Rubella in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, can result in miscarriage, fetal death, stillbirth, or infants with congenital malformations, known as congenital rubella syndrome (CRS),” the WHO warns.

    Symptoms of Rubella

In children, rubella typically causes mild symptoms, including a rash, low fever (below 39°C), nausea, and mild conjunctivitis. The rash, which appears in 50-80% of cases, usually begins on the face and neck before spreading down the body and lasts 1-3 days. Swollen lymph glands behind the ears and in the neck are the most distinctive signs of the disease. In adults, particularly women, rubella can cause arthritis and painful joints, with symptoms lasting from 3 to 10 days.

After initial infection, the rubella virus spreads throughout the body in about 5-7 days, with symptoms appearing 2-3 weeks after exposure. The period when an infected person is most contagious is usually 1-5 days after the rash appears.

The rubella vaccine is a live attenuated strain, and a single dose gives more than 95% long-lasting immunity, which is similar to that induced by natural infection.

Rubella vaccines are available either in monovalent formulation (a vaccine directed at only one pathogen) or more commonly in combinations with other vaccines such as with vaccines against measles (MR), measles and mumps (MMR), or measles, mumps and varicella (MMRV).

Adverse reactions following vaccination are generally mild. They may include pain and redness at the injection site, low-grade fever, rash and muscle aches.

    Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)

When a pregnant woman contracts rubella, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy, there is a high risk of passing the virus to the fetus, resulting in Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS). According to WHO, children born with CRS can suffer from severe health issues such as hearing impairments, eye and heart defects, and other lifelong disabilities like autism, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid dysfunction. Managing these conditions often requires extensive and costly medical care.

Countries where women of childbearing age lack immunity to rubella, either through vaccination or previous infection, face the highest risk of CRS. Before the introduction of the rubella vaccine, up to four out of every 1,000 live births could result in CRS, the WHO adds.

Meanwhile, Regional Director of Health Service for the Volta Region, Dr. Chrysantus Kubio, has called for immediate measures to address the gaps in routine immunization and the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in the region. Speaking at the Stakeholders’ Engagement and Second Quarter Risk Communication Sub-Committee Meeting, Dr. Kubio emphasized the urgent need to increase demand for vaccines.

Dr. Senanu Dzokoto also highlighted the significant public health risk posed by failing to vaccinate all eligible children against preventable diseases. To address this, a national mass vaccination campaign is planned from October 2nd to October 6th, 2024, across all districts in Ghana, including the Volta Region.

    National Vaccination Campaigns

The upcoming vaccination campaign aims to stop the spread of rubella and measles and improve overall vaccination coverage in the region. This initiative follows the 2018 national Measles-Rubella vaccination and Vitamin A supplement campaign, launched by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Health Partners. The 2018 campaign, under the theme “Measles-Rubella Kills; Vaccinate Your Child Now for Good Life,” aimed to immunize over four million children aged 9 months to under 5 years across all 216 districts in Ghana.

Asokwa: Court jails 4 carjackers for 120 years

The Asokwa Circuit Court One in Kumasi has sentenced four carjackers to a total of 120 years in prison, with each convict receiving a 30-year sentence.

The convicts, identified as 22-year-old Jeffrey Jomoh, also known as Jeff; Clifford Opoku, alias Spider, 28; Prince Opuni; and Kwabena Kyei Baffour, were found guilty of multiple robbery incidents across the Kumasi metropolis.

The court, presided over by His Worship Frederick Obikyere, delivered the verdict after the four were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and related offenses. The sentencing comes after a series of criminal activities carried out by the group, including a gunpoint carjacking at Kyirikrom in the Ashanti Region before their arrest in 2022.

According to ASP Stephen Ofori, the police prosecutor, the convicts had been involved in several crimes prior to their capture.

“When they snatch the car, they hand it over to one of the accused persons who has also been convicted, Kwabena Kyei Baffour, who sells the car in Accra,” ASP Ofori explained.

The four first appeared in court in February 2023, where they were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. After hearing three separate robbery cases, the court found them guilty and handed down the cumulative 120-year sentence.

ASP Ofori emphasized that this sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who may be contemplating similar crimes.

One of the victims, Mr. Kwabena Appiah, whose car was snatched at gunpoint, expressed his satisfaction with the court’s decision.

He recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “Upon my return home from work, the armed robbers attacked me and threatened to kill me if I refused to give them my car.” Mr. Appiah reported the incident to the police, leading to the investigation and eventual prosecution of the culprits.

Reflecting on the outcome, Mr. Appiah expressed relief and approval of the court’s ruling, stating that he is pleased with the sentences handed down to the convicts.

  • I didn’t breach national security by probing BoG’s $20m transfer – Ablakwa

    I didn’t breach national security by probing BoG’s $20m transfer – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has defended his actions in sharing details of a $20 million transfer from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to the Central Bank of Liberia, insisting that he did not breach national security protocols.

Earlier, Mr. Ablakwa took to social media platform X to reveal that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had cleared an amount of $20 million intended for the Central Bank of Liberia.

He pointed out discrepancies between documents addressed to the GRA, which indicated that the money was sent to the Bank of Ghana for safekeeping before being transferred to Liberia, and records from Ghana’s central bank, which suggested a different narrative.

The Bank of Ghana responded with a statement, describing the legislator’s actions as “unfortunate” and expressing concerns that his disclosure could compromise sensitive financial information, raising significant security issues. The central bank clarified that the $20 million was transferred to its account as part of an established arrangement with the Central Bank of Liberia.

However, speaking on JoyFM’s Newsnight, Mr. Ablakwa dismissed these concerns, asserting that he had not breached any security protocols. He emphasized that his actions were part of his responsibilities as a legislator, aimed at holding public institutions accountable.

“It is part of our work as Members of Parliament to carry out oversight to let all institutions know that we are on top of our job. We are watching, we are keenly monitoring, and we are carrying out oversight,” Mr. Ablakwa said.

He explained that his intention in posting the issue on social media was simply to seek clarity on the matter, without any ulterior motives. Regarding the issue of posting flight details, which the BoG highlighted as a security concern, Ablakwa clarified that it was an oversight, as the details were included in the documents he shared. He also emphasized that he did not include any flight details in his write-up and that no flight information had been provided regarding the re-exportation of the funds.

“We are carrying out our mandate, it is pure oversight, and I do not see the national security breach in this matter,” he added.

Ablakwa also noted that the $20 million in question was secure and had not been stolen, questioning the basis of the national security concerns raised by the BoG. He highlighted the increasing incidents of money laundering as a justification for his scrutiny, asserting that he was merely fulfilling his role as an MP.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ablakwa expressed satisfaction with the explanations provided by the Bank of Ghana and the Liberian government regarding the transfer.

ECOWAS didn’t fund Kasoa-Winneba Highway project – NEIP CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly spreading false information about the ongoing 8-lane Kasoa-Winneba Highway project.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post on Wednesday, August 28, Mr. Nkansah accused the NDC of misleading the public regarding the source of funds for the highway’s expansion.

According to Mr. Nkansah, the NDC’s claims that the project is being financed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are entirely baseless.

He emphasized that the construction of the 30-kilometer highway, which is currently about 45% complete, is fully funded by the Government of Ghana.

“The 8-lane 30km Kasoa-Winneba Highway project is about 45% complete,” Mr. Nkansah stated. “The project is FULLY funded by the Government of Ghana and not ECOWAS as being peddled by the NDC.”

Mr. Nkansah further accused the NDC of deliberately spreading misinformation about government initiatives, suggesting that these tactics are part of a broader strategy to deceive Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 elections.

He urged the public to seek accurate information and not be swayed by what he described as the opposition’s attempt to mislead the electorate.

Okudzeto ‘humbles’ Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah at Assurance Committee hearing

A heated confrontation unfolded at the Governance and Assurance Committee hearing on Wednesday when Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Chairman of the Committee, clashed with the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, over the government’s handling of the Akosombo dam spillage disaster.

The tension began when Mr. Ablakwa, who has been critical of the government’s response to the disaster, allegedly accused Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah of being “insincere” in addressing the crisis. This remark did not sit well with the Minister, who fired back, accusing Mr. Ablakwa of using his position as Committee Chair to intimidate government officials.

“You will be well advised to watch your diction. I will not take that. To suggest that I am using this position as a bully pulpit. You have to retract that. Because that is not what I am doing here. I am well within my standing orders,” Mr. Ablakwa retorted, refusing to back down from his stance.

Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah, clearly agitated, interjected, “But it is okay for the Chairman of the Committee to accuse the Minister of being insincere, of deflecting without more, and I don’t have the right to answer or to say I share a different view.”

As the exchange grew more intense, media personnel were instructed to stop their coverage of the meeting. However, in a move that further asserted his authority, Mr. Ablakwa instructed the media to continue broadcasting, ensuring that the heated interaction remained public.

Mr. Ablakwa has been a vocal critic of the government’s prolonged failure to adequately support those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage. Nearly a year after the disaster, over 1,300 individuals remain in camps, waiting for compensation and necessary assistance to rebuild their lives.

Speaking at a stakeholder public hearing, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his frustration with the government’s lack of action, particularly criticizing the inter-ministerial committee established to manage the crisis.

“You heard the government set up a 30-member committee. We are the inter-ministerial committee. To be very honest with you, we are very disappointed that that committee has not met us even once. I mean, a lot of the members, we are in parliament with them. I would have thought that even if it’s parliament, we can meet here,” Mr. Ablakwa said.

He continued, “We can even meet at the cafeteria, even over coffee that, oh, share data with us or tell us what is happening. You know, not one meeting, not so, we don’t know if it was just maybe an announcement for the public for some cosmetic reason, but we don’t know.”

A tense confrontation erupted on Wednesday between the Chairman of the Governance and Assurance Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, during a committee meeting discussing the aftermath of the Akosombo dam spillage.

The disagreement, which quickly escalated, began when Mr. Ablakwa allegedly described the Minister as “insincere” in his handling of the Akosombo dam spillage disaster. This comment did not sit well with Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah, who, visibly disgruntled, responded sharply, accusing Mr. Ablakwa of using his position as Committee Chair to intimidate government officials.

“To suggest that I am using this position as a bully pulpit. You have to retract that. Because that is not what I am doing here. I am well within my standing orders,” Mr. Ablakwa demanded, clearly offended by the Minister’s accusation.

Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah, however, stood his ground, interjecting, “But it is okay for the Chairman of the Committee to accuse the Minister of being insincere, of deflecting without more, and I don’t have the right to answer or to say I share a different view.”

As the exchange intensified, media personnel present were instructed to stop their coverage of the meeting. However, Mr. Ablakwa intervened, insisting that the media continue their broadcast, further fueling the heated atmosphere.

The North Tongu MP has been vocal about the government’s prolonged delay in providing adequate support to those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage. Despite nearly a year passing since the disaster, over 1,300 affected individuals remain in camps without receiving compensation or the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives.

During a recent stakeholder public hearing, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his frustration with the government’s response, particularly criticizing the inter-ministerial committee established to address the disaster’s aftermath.

You know, not one meeting, not so, we don’t know if it was just maybe an announcement for the public for some cosmetic reason, but we don’t know.”

Mr. Ablakwa’s remarks reflect growing dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to address the ongoing crisis, as affected communities continue to wait for the assistance they were promised.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Alhassan, has directed the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to deploy water tankers to several communities in Accra facing water supply issues.

This comes after the company attributed the supply issues to a major pipe burst in Dodowa, which supplies water to the affected communities.

During the minister’s visit to the site of the burst pipe, she reprimanded the GWCL for failing to communicate with customers and demanded they provide clear explanations for the water shortages.

Mrs Alhassan instructed the company to provide temporary water supplies to these communities while they worked on resolving the issue.

The GWCL assured the minister that the water supply problem would be resolved within 24 hours.

In addition, the minister stated that measures will be implemented nationwide to ensure continuous water supply.

Residents in several eastern suburbs of Accra, including Madina, Adenta, and Dodowa, have taken to social media to express their frustration over a prolonged water shortage that has left them without access to water for nearly a week. The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has come under fire for its silence and lack of effective communication about the situation, which began on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

The affected communities have been grappling with the water outage since last Sunday, with no prior notice or updates from GWCL. Chairman of the Governance and Assurance Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had a fierce disagreement with the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, when the committee engaged the minister over the aftermath of the Akosombo dam spillage on Wednesday.

A disgruntled Oppong-Nkrumah did not mince his words when he addressed Mr Ablakwa following comments that allegedly described the Minister as “insincere” over the handling of the Akosombo dam spillage disaster.

Mr Oppong-Nkrumah alleged that the North Tongu MP was using his role as Chair of the Committee to bully government officials.

His comment was not taken lightly by Mr Ablakwa who in turn demanded a retraction and an apology.
