Sandra Bullock under pressure to give back Oscar amidst mourning partner’s death

Having enjoyed a career spanning over three decades and leaving an indelible mark with unforgettable roles, Sandra Bullock has captured our hearts. However, she now grapples with the loss of her “greatest love,” and in this challenging period, people are rallying around her with love and support. Nevertheless, amidst these trying times, there are voices stirring up a debate, calling on Sandra to relinquish her Oscar.

Sandra Bullock shared personal connections with her Hollywood colleagues throughout her illustrious and prosperous career. For three years, she was engaged to her former co-star Tate Donovan. She then maintained a highly private relationship with Matthew McConaughey. To this day, despite their two-year romantic relationship, they remain close friends.

In 2015, Sandra Bullock also crossed paths with her partner, the photographer Bryan Randall. “I’ve found the love of my life. We have three beautiful children—three children, including his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever,” Sandra expressed her sentiments during an interview.

However, Bryan was battling ALS, and he recently succumbed to the illness, leaving Sandra and their children deeply affected by his absence. In a statement issued following his passing, it was conveyed, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bryan Randall on August 5, after a courageous three-year battle with ALS. Bryan had chosen to keep his journey with ALS private from the outset, and those of us who cared for him respected his wishes to the fullest.”

Sandra Bullock finds herself in an incredibly challenging situation at present. She has not only recently experienced the loss of her partner, Randall, but is also facing criticism due to her role in the widely popular movie “The Blind Side.” The star is confronting backlash following a recent controversy surrounding the authenticity of the true story on which the film is based.

Just a few days ago, news surfaced that Michael Oher, the real individual portrayed in the movie, has filed a petition alleging that the Tuohy family, depicted in the film, never actually adopted him. He claims that they exploited him for their personal financial gain. As word spread about this unexpected twist in what was previously considered a heartwarming narrative, many individuals expressed their disappointment with Bullock.

Numerous social media users are demanding some form of retribution against Sandra Bullock, even though she had no involvement in the allegations and was unaware of them. On Twitter, calls have even emerged for the revocation of her Oscar, despite her innocence. Some users posted comments like, “I demand we revoke Sandra Bullock’s Oscar and give it to Meryl Streep,” while others stated, “So Sandra Bullock should have to give back her Oscar, right? And man, do we need to start fact-checking these feel-good stories.”

While Bullock has faced criticism in the wake of the controversy, her supporters have rallied to her defense as she navigates this challenging period. One individual commented, “Not y’all calling for Sandra Bullock’s Oscar to be revoked. It ain’t her fault the real-life people were exploitative scammers and thieves.”

In the midst of this controversy, there is an outpouring of love and support for Sandra as she bids farewell to her late partner.

  • Drama in conflict over Kenya’s largest sugar factory

Drama in conflict over Kenya’s largest sugar factory

There has been a big change in the fight to take control of Kenya’s main factory that produces sugar.

Mumias Sugar, which is partly owned by the government, has been facing difficulties since 2019 and is looking for new investments.

It has become unpleasant because many rich and powerful people, including some from Uganda, want to take over the company.

Then President William Ruto stepped in and issued a warning to the fighting groups.

When he went to places where sugar is grown in the west, he said that they are taking advantage of farmers and people who buy sugar, using strong words like “crooks, thieves, and conmen”. He also mentioned that he gave them three choices. They have three options: leave Kenya, go to jail, or go to heaven. There is no other choice available.

The comments made by someone upset human rights organizations. However, these comments persuaded one of the businesspeople to no longer be interested in Mumias Sugar. They dropped several legal cases on Thursday.

This has made things more exciting for people who enjoy the drama, but the future of Mumias Sugar is still uncertain.

  • Maritime Security symposium in full swing in Accra

Maritime Security symposium in full swing in Accra

Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, has stated that an effective maritime environment is fostered through good governance, poverty reduction, and societal inclusion.

He characterised the maritime security issues in the Gulf of Guinea as having multiple facets and being intricate in nature.

Rear Admiral Yakubu was addressing the opening session of a maritime security conference in Accra yesterday.

The two-day conference is on the theme: “Maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea: Fostering a comprehensive approach to a complex problem.”

It is being jointly organised by the Royal Danish Defence College; the Stellenbosch University’s Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa, and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

The conference, which is a build-up to the maiden edition held in 2022, has seasoned maritime security practitioners from around the world as participants.

Among issues being discussed are how to address maritime security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) maritime domain.

    Cost of freight

Rear Admiral Yakubu said that the high cost of freight in the Gulf of Guinea maritime domain resulting from increased insurance premiums for ships operating in the region was negatively impacting the cost of living in many countries.

He also mentioned the lack of trust, inadequate information sharing, interoperability, boundary delimitation and language barrier as some of the drawbacks to maritime security in the region.

Others include poverty, weak governance and environmental degradation, drug and human trafficking, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, maritime terrorism and pollution.

“The sea’s seamless nature and the shipping industry’s multinational character require countries to cooperate to address maritime security issues,” Admiral Yakubu said.

    Concerns

An Associate Professor of the Royal Danish Defence College, Thomas Mandrup, expressed worry over the rising spate of military takeovers in some landlocked countries within the ECOWAS sub-region, which he said posed serious security threats to coastal states’ ability to effectively address maritime security challenges.

Prof. Mandrup also said that coup d’etats allowed local crimes and insurgencies to fester, causing enormous spillovers on neighbouring states.

The Vice Dean of the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University, Dr Michelle Nel, urged players in the maritime sector to build capacity to enable them to monitor and secure their waters.

“It is not just about preventing threats, but also about fostering a culture of maritime responsibility to the benefit of all stakeholders,” he added.

The Commandant of the KAIPTC, Major General Richard Addo Gyane, said whereas efforts of both regional and international partners had drastically reduced, piracy activities within the GoG were increasing and, therefore, required a comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackle the menace.

  • US sees ‘notable success’ in Ukraine’s army drive

US sees ‘notable success’ in Ukraine’s army drive

The US government says that Ukraine’s forces have made significant progress in their attack against strong Russian defenses in the southern area.

John Kirby, the spokesperson for White House security, said that progress was made in the last three days to the south of Zaporizhzhia.

Dmytro Kuleba, the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, said to CNN that the forces in Kyiv were moving forward, but the battle is challenging.

Russia says that they have captured important high spots close to the city of Kupiansk in the northeastern part of Ukraine.

None of the statements have been checked by other sources to confirm if they are true or not.

Mr Kirby mentioned that Kyiv has acknowledged that the effort to divide the Russian land connection to Crimea in the southern region is progressing slower than expected.

“He said that they have had some success in overcoming the second line of Russian defenses. ”

Earlier this week, Ukraine’s armed forces said they had taken control of the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.

In the north-east, Russia has gathered a large number of troops to take back land that Ukraine had previously taken control of to the east of Kharkiv.

In the south, it’s believed that Russia has constructed a complex network of ditches and underground passages. They are protected by fields of explosives, along with spots for big guns and barriers made of special concrete to stop tanks.

Kyiv started fighting back after getting better weapons from their friends in the West and getting ready with attack teams.

But things have been moving slowly, and Kyiv keeps asking Nato countries to give them tanks, tools to remove mines, and airplanes for war – especially F-16 fighter jets made in the US.

On Thursday, Mr. Kuleba expressed frustration with people who complained about how fast Ukraine was responding in battle.

“I suggest that all critics stop talking, visit Ukraine, and attempt to free even just a small area on their own,” he stated during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Spain.

Russian President Vladimir Putin started a big war in Ukraine in February 2022. In 2014, Russian forces took control of the Crimea peninsula and a large part of Ukraine’s Donbas region.

President Putin said to students on Friday, at the beginning of the school year, that Russia’s victory in World War Two showed that their country was unbeatable.

“I learned the reasons why we were successful in the Great Patriotic War,” he said during a lecture meant to encourage patriotism in schools. It’s not possible to beat this country with this mindset. We were unbeatable. And right now, we are identical.

The Russian government introduced something called “important conversations” in schools after they started a big invasion.

Russia’s military said on Friday that they have started using a new powerful nuclear missile system called Sarmat.

The missiles can reach far places and each one has many warheads. We don’t know for sure if they have been deployed because it hasn’t been confirmed by a separate source.
This map shows the progress made by Ukraine in the southern region and also the positions of the villages called Robotyne and Verbove.

She commended Ghanaians for their generosity.

She explained that 85 per cent of all contributions to the fund came within the first three months of its establishment.

Justice Akuffo said the fund acquired and distributed PPE to a cumulative total value of GH¢22.1 million to 56 regional, municipal and district hospitals; COVID-19 Care Management Centres,Isolation Centres; eight Testing Centres; and about 226 CHPS compounds across the length and breadth of the country.

She also included the support given to the School Reopening  Committee to procure PPE for distribution to students in tertiary institutions.

  • Iran and Russia invited to Nobel Prize luncheon

Iran and Russia invited to Nobel Prize luncheon

The Nobel Foundation says that Russia and Belarus have been asked to attend the Nobel Prize banquet in Stockholm again. They were not invited last year because of the war in Ukraine.

Iran has been asked to come back to the event that is happening in the capital of Sweden, even though they were not allowed to go last year.

The organization wanted to include everyone, even if they didn’t have the same beliefs as the Nobel Prize.

One Member of the European Parliament from Sweden said that this year’s invitations were very in appropriate.

Jimmie Akesson, the leader of the Sweden Democrats party, who is against immigration, got invited to an event this year. However, he said he couldn’t go because he had a lot of other important things to do.

Five out of the six Nobel Prize ceremonies happen in Stockholm every year, but the Nobel Peace Prize is given in Oslo.

Last year, the Nobel Foundation said they would not invite ambassadors from Russia and Belarus because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Belarus is an important friend of Russia, and its leader, Alexander Lukashenko, supported Russia’s “special military operation,”which was their way of describing the invasion of Ukraine in February of last year.

Iran did not receive an invitation last year. Tehran has been strongly criticized for how it treats people’s rights. The United Nations has said that the government in that country may have done very bad things to its people during their aggressive response to protests last year.

Vidar Helgesen, the person in charge of the Nobel Foundation, said that they decided to invite the countries back because they see that the world is becoming more divided. People with different opinions are talking less to each other.

“Top revent this inclination, we are expanding our invitations to acknowledge and comprehend the Nobel Prize and the significance of unrestricted science, unrestricted culture, and free, peaceful communities. “

The Foundation has been accused by Swedish Liberal MEP Karin Karlsbro of doing something bad by allowing Russia to be invited to a fancy party while missiles are falling on Ukrainian cultural centers and killing children.

Speaking on Swedish public radio, she referred to Russia, Belarus, and Iran as “rogue states. “She described them as countries that oppress their own citizens, engage in warfare, and spread terror to their own people and nearby nations.

She said that there are countries that do not believe in democratic values a tall. There is fighting happening in Europe. [They have] a very simplistic view point. This text means that it weakens the unity we need in society.

In the past, the leader of the Sweden Democrats political party, Jimmie Akesson, was not invited to the banquet that Swedish political party leaders usually attend.

His party was started by people who supported the Nazis and was avoided by most people for many years. It receivedabout20% of the votes in the election last year.

Mr Akesson said he will not come. “Regrettably,I am occupied on that specific day,” he expressed on his Facebook post.

  • 16 staff at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital face sanctions for extortion, other range of offenses

16 staff at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital face sanctions for extortion, other range of offenses

In an effort to maintain discipline and improve patient care quality, the leadership of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has implemented decisive measures against 16 of its employees.

These individuals have been determined to be in violation of various rules and regulations, leading to consequences that include dismissals, warnings, and unpaid suspensions.

Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, revealed that among the violations were instances of extortion committed by certain staff members. He made this announcement during the mid-year performance review conference in Kumasi for 2023, underlining the hospital’s dedication to upholding discipline among its workforce.

Prof. Addai-Mensah highlighted the hospital’s dedication to prioritizing patient care and ensuring the integrity of its operations.

He explained, “One thing that we have not toyed with is discipline in the hospital and about sixteen staff have been sanctioned for various offences. Extortion has come up a couple of times and many other offences reported too. The quality assurance unit has been strengthened, and it is largely responsible for setting up committees to investigate issues like this and make recommendations to management which then are forwarded to the disciplinary committee which takes a decision on what sanctions should be meted out to culprits.”

Furthermore, Prof. Addai-Mensah unveiled plans to renovate the aging Gee Block within the hospital premises. This particular facility, constructed in 1954, has served for nearly seven decades without substantial refurbishment. Given that KATH receives referrals from various parts of the country, concerns have arisen about the state of these long-standing structures.

In a philanthropic gesture, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is leading a fundraising campaign aimed at rejuvenating these facilities.

Professor Addai-Mensah expressed optimism that this intervention would significantly enhance healthcare services in the region.

Humanitarian crisis in Niger imminent – UN after suspension of activities

The United Nations is worried that there will be a big problem with people’s well-being in Niger soon. This is because the new leaders of the military have stopped the work of United Nations groups in areas where there is fighting.

On Thursday, the government of Niger said that international organizations like the UN can’t work in certain areas for now because of security problems.

It did not say which areas were impacted.

For many years, the country has had problems with attacks from Islamist militants. However, the situation has gotten even worse since the recent coup that overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum’s government.

Soon after assuming control, the military leaders explained that they had taken charge in order to more effectively deal with the uprising movements.

The person who led the coup has stopped the UN Humanitarian Air Service. This happened because less than 50% of Niger’s health centers are able to work.

On Wednesday, the United Nations stated that the action has made it difficult to deliver important medicines and food supplies. Other United Nations organizations have also been impacted.

The international organization is very concerned about the situation of over 600,000 refugees and over 20,000 displaced people who are living in unsafe conditions in West Africa.

Trotro driver arrested in Kasoa for assaulting 2 men with hammer during domestic dispute

In a recent incident, Kasoa District Police Command has detained a 30-year-old individual named Kwabena Brenya after a violent clash, which saw him employ a wall hammer as a weapon during a dispute among tenants in a shared residence.

The distressing occurrence has left one victim, Edmond Ampomah, in a critical state, presently under medical care at the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa. He exhibits neurological complications stemming from the assault.

Ampomah, who narrowly avoided a life-threatening situation, allegedly lost consciousness after a blow to the head with a wall hammer, which was wielded by the accused assailant, Kwabena Brenya, a commercial driver by profession.

According to the victim’s account of the events, the dispute arose between the wife of Ampomah and Brenya, who were both residing as tenants in Otacity, a suburban area in Akweley, Kasoa. The altercation, which transpired on the evening of Monday, August 28, 2023, centred on the improper disposal of human waste within the compound of their shared residence.

Upon his wife’s request, Ampomah rushed home to mediate in the dispute. However, he was taken by surprise when Brenya launched a vicious hammer attack, targeting both Ampomah and another individual.

Ampomah fell unconscious at the scene and was swiftly transported to the Mother and Child Hospital in Kasoa, where he remains hospitalized. Medical assessments, including a scan, have revealed a skull fracture resulting from the assault.

The police have taken Brenya into custody and are currently conducting investigations into the incident.

Ruth Kadiri angry over a Ghanaian TV Station airing her movie without permission

Nollywood actress and movie producer Ruth Kadiri has expressed her concern in a video where she openly criticized a well-known Ghanaian television station.

The prominent actress conveyed her affection for her Ghanaian fans and the entire country. However, she didn’t shy away from voicing her disappointment with a popular TV station for reposting her content without obtaining her permission.

She stressed that the TV station didn’t merely use one or two pieces of her content without her consent but took multiple pieces, as if they had the right to do so. Ruth also mentioned her reluctance to watermark her content, as it would compromise its quality.

In no uncertain terms, the actress stated that she was sharing this video as both an initial and final warning to the TV station. She cautioned them that if they continued this practice, legal action would be pursued.

With earnest sincerity, she implored them to halt this behavior to avoid unnecessary and prolonged disputes.

While expressing her disappointment, the actress highlighted her high expectations from the TV station. She pointed out the significant effort and cost involved in creating content and expressed frustration that instead of acquiring it legally, they chose to broadcast it without authorization, essentially distributing it for free.

  • President Akufo-Addo proposes debate on ex-gratia

President Akufo-Addo proposes debate on ex-gratia

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proposed a debate aimed at reaching a constitutional resolution regarding the benefits of Article 71 Officeholders, in response to public concerns on the issue.

He initiated the discussion by recommending that the nation should explore the practices of other countries, including the United States of America, where these principles were initially established and were automatically adjusted based on specific objective criteria.

He further averred to the newly constituted Committee of Emoluments for Article 71 Officeholders to consider public concerns about whether or not such officeholders, notwithstanding the constitutional imperative, deserved what was paid to them in view of the current economic challenges.

President Akufo-Addo made the call when he swore in a five-member Committee of Emoluments for Article 71 Officeholders at the Jubilee House in Accra last Wednesday evening.

    Composition

The committed is chaired by a lawyer and immediate past Chairperson of the Public Services Commission, Dr Janet Ampadu-Fofie.

The members are the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Professor George Gyan-Baffuor; a lawyer and women’s rights activists, Gloria Ofori-Buadu; a research fellow at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana, Prof. Isaac Osei-Akoto, and the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Benjamin Arthur.

They swore the Official Oath and Oath of secrecy.

As the terms of reference, the committee is to make recommendations in respect of emoluments and other privileges for Article 71 Officeholders as specified under the Constitution.

The committee is also to examine any other relevant matter which it deems appropriate to its work.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that in recent times, there had been public discourse surrounding the remuneration of public officers which had centred primarily on those of Article 71 Officeholders.

    Public

The debate, the President explained, had centred on “whether or not notwithstanding the Constitutional imperative, we are deserving of what is being paid to us in view of the challenges currently confronting our national economy”.

He, therefore, suggested to the committee that it might well be that their work should also focus on those concerns and make recommendations on how they should be addressed.

President Akufo-Addo stated that it appeared that every President of the Republic was bound by the constitutional injunction to establish the Committee of Emoluments for Article 71 Officeholders to consider the emoluments of Article 71 officeholders.

“I think it may be worth our while to examine the practice of other jurisdictions.

For example, the American one, where the principles are established and automatically adjusted according to certain objective criteria,” he added.

    Article 71

The inauguration of the five-member committee is sanctioned by Article 71 (1) of the Constitution which requires the President to set it up to determine the salaries and allowances payable, and the facilities and privileges available to his office, the Vice-President, the Speaker and Members of Parliament and a group of nine officeholders spelt out in that Article.

The recommendations of the five-member committee are subject to the approval of the President and Parliament.

The composition of the committee is done on the advice of the Council of State.

“I’ve appointed you to this committee on the advice of the council of responsible Ghanaians as eminently qualified to undertake this important function and I congratulate each and every one of you on your appointment,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He urged the committee to bring to the table the work of previous committees, namely those chaired by Miranda Greenstreet, Mary Chinnery Hesse, Ishmael Yamson, Marian Ewurama Addy, Francisca Dora Edu-Buandoh and Yaa Ntiamoah Badu in the conduct of their work to be able to establish some consistencies.

The President also reminded members of the committee that the task ahead was a challenging one but it was his expectation that they would be up to it and deliver their report expeditiously.

President Akufo-Addo assured the committee of his full support for the assignment as well as his government’s assistance if needed throughout the period of their work.

Dr Ampadu-Fofie, on behalf of the committee, commended the government and the Council of State for the confidence reposed in them.

She gave an assurance that they would work diligently and expeditiously to deliver on their mandate.

    Background

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, recently reiterated that the money paid to Members of Parliament (MPs) and other Article 71 Officeholders every four years was accumulated salary arrears (gratuity) and not ex gratia.

He said at the beginning of every Parliament, most legislators, including himself as the Speaker, did not know the exact salary they were entitled to until the end of their four-year term; a practice he described as “wrong”.

The Speaker explained that whenever Ghanaians talked about budget for Parliament, they considered such budget as money earmarked for salaries and conditions of service of MPs, “especially what people refer to as ex gratia.”

“Gratuity is different from ex gratia; what they pay MPs is gratuity and it is another wrong practice because as we sit here in our third year, which is three years down, I as the Speaker do not know my salary,” he revealed.

    Unstable salary

Speaking during a visit to the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr Bagbin said: “My salary has not yet been fixed and so every month I am paid something based on what my predecessor was earning.’’

“But we all know from the labour front that every year they try to renegotiate with the government and so at the end of the four years then they (government) come out with your salary.”

“And that will definitely be higher than the first year and so they have to pay you arrears.

It is those arrears that balloon to what the Members of Parliament take at the end of four years and people call that ex gratia and you get the problem,” the Speaker explained.

Top Russian astronaut passes away after being ‘poisoned by mushrooms’

A famous Russian space scientist passed away after supposedly being poisoned with mushrooms.

Professor Vitaly Melnikov was in charge of the department that makes rockets and spaceships at RSC Energia, which is the top company in Moscow for building spacecraft.

The person who was 77 years old had been sick for more than two weeks because of severe poisoning. Unfortunately, the doctors could not save him.

According to a news outlet in Moscow, it is believed that the person was poisoned by mushrooms that cannot be eaten.

However, it is not known or disclosed how he was supposedly poisoned.

RSC Energia is the biggest company in Russia in its field and the top business in the space industry.

It is in charge of everything related to people going into space and leads Russia’s work for the International Space Station.
Mr Melnikov previously held a position as the head researcher at TsNIIMASH, a part of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

He wrote 291 scientific articles and was thought of as one of the most respected space scientists. He also collaborated with NASA and taught at a university in Russia.

This happened a few weeks after Putin’s hopes were ruined when a Russian spaceship sent to study the moon crashed into its surface because it lost control.

And on Friday, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) seemed to have discovered the exact location where the moon lander crashed down.

Mr Melnikov’s death is one of several senior Russian figures who have died in strange or suspicious ways since President Vladimir Putin started his conflict with Ukraine.

Reports from Moscow say that Professor Vitaly Melnikov, a top Russian space scientist, has died at the age of 77. The cause of his death is believed to be mushroom poisoning.

In the past few weeks, a Russian general who knew important information about the dictator’s expensive palace died unexpectedly in prison, just as he could have been released. Additionally, a military leader who briefly commanded the invasion of Ukraine also passed away at the age of 58.

Earlier this year, a very wealthy Russian member of parliament named Nikolay Bortsov, who was 77 years old and had connections to the UK, was discovered dead on the same day as another politician named Dzhasharbek Uzdenov, who was 56 years old.

A lot of people linked to Putin have died in unusual ways. Some fell from windows, some were shot randomly, some died in helicopter accidents, and others had mysterious “suicides”.

A Russian rich person died last year supposedly after ‘shamans’ gave him toad venom to help with his hangover. However, his cause of death was officially recorded as a heart attack.

The leader of a group of paid soldiers called the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is 62 years old, was one of 10 people who died in a plane accident. His right-hand man and co-founder, Dmitry Utkin, who is 53 years old, also died in the accident.

But many people believe and talk about the idea that Prigozhin may not have actually been on the plane.

More people started believing the rumours when the wife of a man who looked like him was seen at the warlord’s tomb the day after his funeral.

On Thursday, a creepy video from Prigozhin appeared, appearing to send a message to his soldiers from beyond the afterlife.

The Kremlin first said that the idea of Prigozhin being murdered was completely false, but later admitted that the plane crash might have been done on purpose. However, the Russian government has not said that Putin had any part in Prigozhin’s death.

In a different place, the situation of the harmful mushroom lunch incident is still making people very interested. A woman made a meal using poisonous mushrooms for her husband’s parents, causing the death of three people and making one person very sick.

NPA set to implement Cylinder re-circulation model starting this month

Starting today, September 1, 2023, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), in its regulatory capacity, will initiate the National Cylinder Re-circulation Model across multiple locations in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.”

Currently, two bottling plants are prepared to commence the pilot program in these two regions, with the rest set to join in the coming months to expand into additional regions.

The prrogramme, if successful, would exit from the current procurement and distribution system in the next three years.

Mr Perry Okudzeto, a Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Authority who announced this at a media engagement in Accra said the model was to ensure that the depletion of forests for charcoal and fuelwood were abated and to make LPG accessible to all Ghanaians, even in the rural area.

He said the model, which had been on the drawing board for the past years, after its roll-out would ensure that about 50 percent of Ghanaians had access to the commodity by 2030.

The Deputy CEO said after a pilot roll-out in Ashanti, Eastern and Northern Regions, many lessons were learnt for the implementation of the new system throughout the country.

He said issues initially raised by distributors had also been resolved after many consultative meetings with them and gave the assurance that all safety measures were put in place for a successful roll-out.

He said the acceptance of the programme would help increase LPG use and help in the energy transition from charcoal and firewood to LPG.

The programme attracted Media Executives and Editors from the state and private media organisations.

  • UK Met Office to review upcoming storms

About one-third of the upcoming significant storms will bear the names of British weather forecasters.

New naming guidelines are being implemented by the Met Office for the most recent forecasting season, which spans from September to next August. The Met Office, Ireland’s Mett Eirann, and the Dutch weather agency also contribute to naming decisions.

In the past, meteorologists selected the names of storms using an alphabetical list of names that alternated between men’s and women’s names.

Met claims it wants to draw attention to the employees of government agencies and other individuals who assist in planning the response to hazardous weather events.

The weather service can consider ideas submitted by individuals. Ciaran Fearon, an employee of the Northern Ireland government, informs the public about river levels and potential coastal floods.

Debi Garft, who recently left her job in the Scottish Government flooding team, has also been chosen as a nominee for her contribution in setting up the Scottish Flood Forum and the Scottish Flood Forecasting Service.
Ciaransaid that because of climate change, we are now more conscious than ever of how weather can impact us in different ways every day.

‘We should appreciate and take seriously every type of weather, especially during extreme weather and storms. This work helps us be ready and minimize the negative effects of these events. ’

Debi said that it is important for everyone to get ready for extreme weather to keep ourselves, our families, and our things safe.

She said that official online maps of floods and services that alert people about floods are good first steps that people can join.
Met Eireann will add the names of well-known scientists, like Jocelyn, following the astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell.

The names of the Netherlands will be chosen by the Dutch people during their visits to the weather station throughout the year.

Will Lang, who is in charge of understanding current situations at the Met Office, said that naming storms helps make it easier to talk about really bad weather conditions and makes things clearer for people who might be affected by the weather.

  • Security Analyst Adib Saani criticises COP Alex Mensah’s ‘political tone’ in IGP ousting probe

In a significant observation, security analyst Adib Saani has pointed out that COP Alex Mensah, a police officer featured in an audio recording discussing the removal of IGP Dampare from office before the 2024 elections, adopts a communication style more akin to that of a politician than a law enforcement officer.

Adib Saani’s statement is based on the way COP Alex Mensah responded to the queries posed by the seven-member committee during the investigation of the anti-IGP audio on Thursday, August 31, 2023.

“What I am very worried about is whether COP Alex Mensah is a police officer or politician. He spoke more like a politician than a police professional. And I think that is sad because the thing is we cannot delink politics from the police. This is something that has always been the case for years unend,” Adib Saani said on Accra-based JoyNews.

COP Alex Mensah during the committee sitting disclosed that he is a sympathiser of the New Patriotic Party but no card-bearing member.

He also added that he talked with the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua to be vigilant or his party will go into opposition come 2025.

The police commissioner furthered that IGP Dampare is mismanaging the police service and the force is not happy about it.

“Dampare is not managing the Police Service well and the majority of police officers are not happy. You can call the police officers on the ground and they will tell you,” COP Mensah said.

    Background

A leaked audio recording, allegedly involving a Police Commissioner, a sergeant and a politician discussing a plot to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, ignited public outrage in July 2023.

The recording features an officer who identifies himself as “Mensah” and a politician who is reportedly a regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Their conversation revolves around plans to remove the IGP from office due to fears that he would be too firm during the 2024 elections and prevent any potential rigging.

The Commissioner of Police also specifically identifies the IGP’s handling of the Assin North by-election as evidence of his commitment to ensuring free and fair elections.

  • Attorney General shifts Appiah Mensah’s trial to High Court

Attorney General shifts Appiah Mensah’s trial to High Court

The Attorney General has lodged new charges in the High Court against Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, who is the CEO of Menzgold Ghana Limited, along with two other individuals.

The latest legal document lists 39 counts of fraudulent activity under false pretenses against Mensah, Menzgold Ghana Limited, and Brew Marketing Consult Limited.

The charge sheet, filed on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, was signed by Mrs Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP),

This was after the Attorney General filed a nolle prosequi in the case against Mensah.

The facts indicated that Menzgold Ghana Limited and Brew Marketing Consult Limited were sister companies owned by Mensah.

Menzgold started out in 2013 as Menzbank Ghana Company Limited, whereas Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited was incorporated in December 2016.

She said Mensah was a Director and Chief Executive Officer of Menzgold and Brew Marketing Ghana Limited and a majority shareholder of both companies.

Mensah operated Menzgold as a deposit-taking business masked as gold trading without the required license.

On March 11, 2015, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) issued a public notice to the effect that Menzbank was an unlicensed deposit-taking institution.

The DDP said Mensah, in a bid to circumvent the notice of BoG, changed the company’s name from Menzbank to Menzbanc.

She said sometime in 2017, Mensah changed the company’s name from Menzbanc to Menzgold Ghana Company Limited.

Mrs Obuobisa said that Mensah’s business module was that Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited sold gold and gold collectables to the public for the purpose of investing in Menzgold, even though the company lacked a license to sell gold.

On August 22, 2016, the Minerals Commission granted Menzgold, a three-year license to purchase and export gold.

The terms of the license permitted the company to purchase gold from small-scale miners for export only.

Menzgold and Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited breached its restricted gold purchase and exportation licence by selling gold to persons in Ghana.

Mensah and Menzgold established a gold vault market in 2016, offering the public a platform to trade in gold and gold collectables.

To circumvent the requirements of the law, Mensah and Menzgold set up A3 to sell gold to the public as a means for Menzgold to take the gold deposits.

Between 2017 and 2018, Mensah and Brew Marketing solicited members of the public to purchase gold and gold collectibles from Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited and deposit the gold with Menzgold.

Mensah and Brew Marketing encouraged the public to deposit purchased gold and gold valuables with Menzgold in exchange for profits ranging from seven to ten per cent.

In response to this offer, some 16,000 individuals deposited large sums of money in the belief that they were dealing with an authorized deposit-taking company that would guarantee them the returns advertised by the accused.

Menzgold and Brew Marketing Consult Ghana Limited continued to operate despite many engagements and warnings issued by the regulatory agencies.

Meanwhile, members of the public began to face difficulties, such as delayed payments or lower dividends; a number of cheques issued by Menzgold were also returned.

Mrs Obuobisa stated that on September 7, 2018, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ordered Menzgold to stop its operations for failure to obtain an SEC license.

Between November 2016 and March 2019, many customers of the accused petitioned the police, claiming that they had invested a lot of money in Menzgold but were unable to recover their investments despite their best efforts.

Investigations showed that the accused took a total of GH$1,680,920 from their customers under false pretences, which they did not recover.

The DDP said investigations found that between 2017 and 2018, the accused moved a large amount of depositor’s money from Menzgold Ghana Company Ltd. and Brew Marketing Consult Limited to Zylofon Media, a company affiliated with Mensah.

She said Mensah withdrew or transferred vast amounts of money into his bank account for his own use.

According to the DPP, investigations found that the money fraudulently collected from depositors and dishonestly appropriated by the accused remained unpaid after Menzgold Ghana Company Ltd.’s license was terminated.

“In the course of investigations, a number of vehicles were recovered from the accused persons which have been auctioned, and the proceeds kept in an exhibit account. Some gold bars were also recovered from the accused persons. accused persons,” she said.

25-year-old man caught having sex with calf after suspicious farmer installs camera

A person might have to go to jail because he confessed to sneaking onto a farm to have sexual activity with a young cow.

According to ITV, Liam Brown, a 25-year-old person, was caught by farmers who believed that their farm animals were being mistreated. The farmers decided to install cameras and alarms to catch the person responsible.

Brown secretly entered the farm in Christchurch, Dorset, during the late hours of the night in June 2022. The farmers already knew him because some of his family had worked there in the past.

The person who is in charge of proving the defendant’s guilt, named Charles Nightingale, said to the court in Poole that the defendant has been known by the family for a long time since he was a kid.

The person accused of a crime was discovered by the farmer’s family. They were worried about the well-being of the baby animals involved and installed alarms in the area.

That night, they received alarms and their equipment notified them, which led to finding the person being accused.

Afterwards, they collected samples from the animal to confirm the sexual activity in question.

Brown cried as he admitted to doing a bad thing by sexually hurting and causing pain to an animal that should be protected.

The judge was told that he had never been convicted of a crime before and that he hadn’t gone back to the farm since the incident.

The lawyer, Harry Price-Smith, agreed that the case should go to a higher court for a verdict. The person accused of the crime was allowed to leave without any restrictions.

The magistrates told Brown that his case was going to the crown court because his crimes were very serious and he might need a harsher punishment than what they were able to give.

He will be given a punishment on September 22.

High Court discharges dead ‘coup plotter’

The Accra High Court, which was conducting the trial of Dr Frederick Mac-Palm, the CEO of Citadel Hospital, and nine other individuals charged with an alleged attempt to overthrow the government, has acquitted Dr Mac-Palm posthumously following his passing.

This decision was made subsequent to the Court’s receipt of official confirmation of his demise.

The Court declared that Dr. Mac-Palm’s records needed to be removed from the legal proceedings due to their incompleteness, and he was unable to present his defense.

His lawyers have been discharged, and the matter has been adjourned for trial.

The case was adjourned to April 17, 2023.  for Donya Kafui’s evidence-in-chief and cross-examination.

The prosecution previously stated that Dr. Mac-Palm, Kafui, Bright Alan Debrah, Johannes Zikpi, Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli, Warrant Officer Class Two Esther Saan, Corporals Sylvester Akankpewu, Ali Solomon, and Seidu Abubakar, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Benjamin Kwasi Agordzo were all members of the Take Action Ghana-a Non-Governmental Organisation, that Mac-Palm founded in 2018.

The Court learned that the organisation intended to demonstrate against the government as well as topple it, so Mac-Palm contacted Kafui, an Alavanyo resident, to manufacture arms for the purpose, which he eventually did.

The Prosecution said later, the others were also contacted.

It said they also held meetings to facilitate the process and drew a map covering the Flagstaff House, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, 37 Military Hospital, and Burma Camp to facilitate their movements.

The prosecution recounted that Colonel Gameli promised to give his support before, during and after the planned event.

He stated that when Kafui delivered 22 explosives, six pistols, three grenades, and five ammunitions, Mac-Palm accommodated him and that all of that transpired between June 2018 and September 2019.

According to the Prosecution, Mac-Palm provided a quantity of a substance that, when inhaled, would cause one to sleep for an hour.

It said the police arrested Mac-Palm on September 19, and the rest were apprehended afterwards, with a docket sent to the Attorney-General for advice.

All the ten accused persons denied the offence and have been granted bail.

The Court ordered them to open their defence after the Court had established the basis for the charge against them.

Thus, Dr. Mac-Palm was being cross-examined after giving his evidence in chief when he was reported dead before their next appearance in Court.

  • Putin suspends planes over Moscow after drone strike rattles village close to nuclear power facility

Putin suspends planes over Moscow after drone strike rattles village close to nuclear power facility

Ukraine has launched many drone attacks on Russia, and there are rumors that a nuclear power plant might have been targeted.

More than 500 drone attacks have occurred during the Russia-Ukraine war, with various parts of Russia being targeted.

Governor Roman Starovoyt said that two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) crashed into a building in Kurchatov, located in the Kursk region. This region is also where a nuclear plant is situated.

He said that investigators are at the location to check how much damage happened, but he did not say if there was any damage to the nuclear plant.

A video showed a big explosion in the night sky over Pskov in northern Russia. Pskov was already in a bad situation because of an attack earlier this week. Two transport planes were destroyed and two more were seriously damaged.

Moscow had more problems with the airports closing again because of a claim that a drone was shot down over the suburb of Lyubertsy.

There was smoke in the area and big airports stopped flights for over two hours.

“Zelenskiy, Ukraine’s leader, told a big group of people in Copenhagen that Russia will not win this war. ”

Today, the air defense forces near Lyubertsy stopped another try to fly a small flying robot to Moscow, according to the city’s mayor Sergey Sobyanin.

The recent drone attacks show that Ukraine is now better able to attack Russia.

Pskov is about 500 miles away from the closest Ukrainian land. People believed that drones were being flown by groups opposed to war who were working together with Ukrainian secret services and operating in Putin’s country.

But Volodymyr Zelensky said this week that Ukraine now has the ability to launch long-range attacks inside Russia.

Ukraine also showed a video of an experiment that demonstrated the explosive power of their new cardboard drones.

The drones were sent to attack Kursk at the Khalino military airfield before, and they might have been used in other attacks as Kyiv increases its focus on targeting Russian territory.

A spokesperson from the Ukrainian military stated that they have information suggesting that these types of drones cannot be seen on radar by the enemy.

The test results revealed that after the explosion, the objects that caused the explosion spread over a wide area. This area was big enough to cause damage to even a big airplane.

Kyiv says that in Kursk, 16 of its drones broke 4 Su-30 fighter jets, 1 MiG-29 fighter jet, 2 Pantsir-S1 air defense systems, and a radar connected to a long-range S-300 missile system.

  • Committee investigating alleged anti-IGP conspiracy may allow cross-examination of involved parties – Atta Akyea

In the ongoing investigation of the leaked tape concerning an alleged conspiracy to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chairman of the parliamentary committee overseeing the inquiry, Samuel Atta Akyea, has proposed a method to enable cross-examination of the implicated individuals.

During the hearing on Thursday, August 31, 2023, Akyea alluded to this approach and reiterated it in an interview with Eyewitness News on Citi FM.

He emphasized the committee’s commitment to a thorough and comprehensive investigation, stating, “When we evaluate the evidence and realize that there is a need to bring Bugri Naabu back, we will do so. Even now, we have a situation where someone is talking about an original tape.

“If there is an original tape, and it will enlarge the scope of the interrogation, we will get it, give it to everyone, and enlarge the scope of the interrogation. We don’t want to do a shoddy job. Cross-examination is possible.”

Akyea elaborated on the committee’s approach, stating, “When there are controversial issues, I am of the view that we have to call the parties back, and they need to talk to each other.

“And then we will listen to what X said and what Y said, and then we will come to our conclusion and recommendations.”

The committee’s public hearing is set to continue today, on Friday, September 1, 2023.

Notably, the Director of Operations at the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, who is considered a key witness in the matter, appeared before the committee yesterday to provide testimony regarding his alleged involvement in the plot.

His interrogation will continue today as part of the ongoing proceedings.

  • War in Ukraine: Schools resume amidst Russian attacks

War in Ukraine: Schools resume amidst Russian attacks

It was a calm summer morning in Romny, a small town in northern Ukraine.

Last Wednesday, Tetyana Prokopenko, a school principal nearby, told her husband that she needed to attend meetings to get ready for the upcoming school period.

Just after 10:00 in the morning, she and her deputy, secretary, and a librarian would be dead.

They were all murdered by a Russian kamikaze drone that nearly wiped out their school.

She really loved that school, it meant everything to her. Prokopenko’s husband, Valery, says with tears that she was there all the time.
Russian air attacks will pose a continuous danger to Ukrainian teachers, children, and parents as the new school term starts on September 1st.

According to the Ukrainian government, over 360 schools have been completely destroyed and over 3,000 schools have been damaged during the war with Russia.

Russia and Amnesty International say Ukraine has created military bases in schools, but Kyiv calls these allegations lies and propaganda.

“I promise that there were no soldiers present,” Valery says about the school in Romny where his wife was killed.

To reduce the dangerous risk, lots of students will be learning from home, and it is the job of the local governments to decide if classes will be held in the school or online.

Their choice is based on how safe it is in each area and if the schools there have places to protect against bombs.

Kharkiv, the second biggest city in Ukraine, is located near the border of Russia and often becomes a target for attacks. As a result, most of the education in that place will be conducted online.

To make sure students can learn safely in person, the people in charge have created 60 classrooms at subway stations underground. These classrooms can fit over 1,000 students.

The Deputy Education Minister, Andriy Stashkiv, has informed the BBC that around one-sixth of schools in Ukraine will be conducting classes remotely. However, this is a significant decrease compared to last year when one in three schools were doing the same.
The lessons and activities taught during wartime.

Around 80,000 students from areas in Ukraine that are controlled by Russia will be logging into their classes.

It’s very difficult for us, and it’s not safe for them because the people who are in control threaten them and their parents if they find out that they are still going to Ukrainian schools. Stashkiv says that it is a very important security problem. Schools don’t disclose the identities of these students because it could endanger their lives and health.

The school will change what students learn to fit the needs of times of war. One of the changes is that everyone will have to study mine safety.

The course is made easier for younger kids by including Patron, a well-known dog who sniffs out mines. Patron also appears in a cartoon series that teaches young Ukrainians about the dangers of unexploded weapons.

Pictures of a nice Jack Russell terrier help make Ukrainian children feel safe in their minds and emotions, according to Lesya Yurchyshyn, a teacher from Kyiv, who spoke to the BBC’s Ukrainecast podcast.

Ukraine’s education ministry removed many Russian writers from the curriculum last year because of the war with Russia.

The war has caused a lot of problems for education in Ukraine and it has made it really bad.

The UN’s children’s agency Unicef has reported that children in Ukraine are experiencing a significant decline in their ability to learn.

In Ukraine, attacks on schools keep happening without stopping. This makes children very sad and they don’t have safe places to learn. The children in Ukraine are having a hard time learning and remembering what they learn in school.

It has been a long time since schools in front-line cities like Zaporizhzhia were fully open. Instead, they have been using remote education with occasional breaks since Covid restrictions started in spring 2020.

“This is not the usual way of learning,” says Kostyantyn Samiylo, the principal of Perspektyva school in Zaporizhzhia. The children have not had good schooling for three years.

He said that when children learn remotely, it is harder to keep them interested or see how much they understand.

Mr Samiylo is talking about how he has been sad because he hasn’t been able to see children going to school. He says that you can only see this in places that are far away from where there is fighting happening.

I cried when I visited western Ukraine last year and saw kids with their small backpacks going to school. Samiylo says it is really bad to think that our children don’t get this chance.

However distance learning may affect education in Ukraine, everyone agrees that safety is the most important thing.

  • Prof Kwesi Aning rebukes COP George Alex Mensah’s statements regarding IGP and alleged plot

Prof Kwesi Aning rebukes COP George Alex Mensah’s statements regarding IGP and alleged plot

In a compelling denouncement, Director of Academic Affairs and Research at KAIPTC, Prof Kwesi Aning, takes issue with remarks by COP George Alex Mensah, Director General of Operations at Ghana Police, concerning the incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP).”

COP Alex Mensah, who is approaching retirement later this year, leveled allegations against the IGP, asserting that the Police Service was not being efficiently administered.

He made these remarks during his appearance before a parliamentary ad-hoc committee investigating allegations from a leaked tape, suggesting his involvement in a plot to oust the IGP from office.

“It is true; the current IGP is not managing the service well. And I will not deny this today or tomorrow. I will say it everywhere I go. You can do your own investigation within the service and you will know,” myjoyonline.com quoted COP Alex Mensah.

In response to these comments, Prof Aning expressed concern, stating that it was problematic to sow discord against the IGP and question his popularity within the force.

“That demonstrates in no uncertain terms from where I sit, that he doesn’t mean well for the service,” Prof Aning

He further criticized the senior police officer for bypassing established complaint channels and resorting to political avenues for his grievances.

Prof Aning suggested that this behaviour indicated a lack of goodwill towards the Police Service.

Additionally, Prof Aning raised concerns about COP Mensah’s personal antagonism towards the IGP and his perceived intention to bring him down, describing the situation as unfortunate.

COP Mensah “translated his personal antagonisms towards the IGP and wants to go down with him.”

COP Mensah, a lawyer and Chartered Accountant, denied any personal animosity towards the IGP, attributing his statements to professional disagreements.

He admitted that the voice on the leaked tape was his but claimed that the content had been doctored.

Furthermore, he disputed the claims of a plot to remove the IGP and accused Bugri Naabu of lying before the committee.

  • I didn’t marry an American before getting all the properties – Afia Schwarzenegger

I didn’t marry an American before getting all the properties – Afia Schwarzenegger

Popular socialite Afia Schwarzenegger has firmly denied allegations suggesting that she entered into marriage solely to obtain American citizenship.

Afia Schwarzenegger, who is presently residing in the United States, recently unveiled her second marriage, which she claimed took place in Manhattan, New York.

After sharing this news on social media, some internet users questioned its authenticity, with some viewing it as one of her typical publicity stunts, while others speculated that it might be a “green card marriage.”

However, addressing these allegations during a TikTok livestream, Afia Schwarzenegger emphasized her existing success and explained that American citizenship was not a driving factor in her life.

She asserted that she had already achieved a luxurious lifestyle, including owning properties and vehicles, before marrying her new American spouse. In her words, ““I didn’t marry an American before getting all the properties I have now, so I don’t need it. How many people in America have got a Mercedes Benz, Prado, Venza, s6, houses and co. What hurts my enemies is that the marriage comes with the papers,” she stated.

Addressing those propagating such claims, she empathized, saying,“Think about yourself. I can see that you people are very hurt. I feel so sorry for you people, I can feel your pain and smell your jealousy.”

Parenting mum on YouTube detained for child abuse

A woman from Utah, who used to have a well-liked YouTube channel where she gave parenting advice, was taken into custody by the police on suspicion of child abuse. This happened after her thin and undernourished son managed to run away from their house, as reported by authorities.

Ruby Franke and her business partner Jodi Nan Hildebrandt were taken into custody in Ivins, Utah on Wednesday.

Officials also discovered that Ms. Franke’s 10-year-old daughter was undernourished at her partner’s house.

Ms Franke and her business partner have been charged with two serious crimes of child abuse.

The BBC contacted Ms Franke and Ms Hildebrandt to ask for their thoughts or opinions.

The police say that Ms Franke’s 12-year-old son went out of the window and went to a neighbor’s house to ask for food and water.

According to a statement from the Santa-Clara Ivins Public Safety Department, the neighbor said that the young person looked very skinny and unhealthy, with wounds and duct tape around their arms and legs.

The statement said that when the police arrived, they saw that the boy had severe wounds and was very undernourished.

The officials said that the boy had to go to the hospital because he had serious cuts from being tied up with rope and because he was not getting enough food.

The police got permission to search because of the incident. They took four children and gave them to the family and child services.

Ms Franke, who is 41 years old, became well-known on YouTube during the 2010s. She gained popularity through her channel called 8 passengers, where she talked about being a parent to her six children. Ms Franke has been featured in YouTube videos with Ms Hildebrandt on the ConneXions Classroom counseling website.

The YouTube channel had more than 2 million people who followed it before it was shut down earlier this year.

The person who makes videos online has received criticism before because of her strict parenting methods that she talks about on her YouTube channel. For example, her son said he had to sleep on a bean bag for a long time as a punishment. Franke also talked about not giving meals as a way to discipline.

Some people called child protective services because of the bean bag incident. Franke said the incidents were misunderstood.

According to US media, Shari Franke, the oldest daughter of Ms. Franke, posted on Instagram after her mother was arrested. She said that her family is happy that justice is being served.

“She said that we have been telling the police and CPS about this for many years, and we are happy that they have finally decided to take action. ”

According to the Associated Press, Ms. Franke asked for a lawyer and did not talk to the police. On Thursday, no one knew the name of the lawyer yet.

Egyptians in Zambian gold fraud case freed

Charges of spying against five Egyptians and one Zambian who were arrested after a suspicious plane landed in Lusaka with cash, fake gold, and weapons have been removed. They could have been sent to prison for up to 30 years if found guilty.

However, two of the Egyptians are being arrested again for smaller crimes and will be allowed to pay money for their release, according to a statement from Zambia’s Drug Enforcement Commission.

Five Zambians who were also held at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport two weeks ago have not been let go. They will have to face a trial in the High Court for being accused of spying.

The authorities found about $5. 7 million in cash, some guns, 126 bullets, and what appeared to be 127 kilograms of gold bars on the private jet. The bars were made of a mix of gold, copper, nickel, tin, and zinc.

This is not a good time to talk about anything. One of the Egyptians who was freed said to reporters outside the court that we knew from the beginning that we are innocent. They then got on a bus.

The state prosecutors did not explain why they decided to dismiss the charges. They decided to stop prosecuting the case, but they have the choice to start again if they get more evidence.

  • Tipper truck drivers, police clash over controversial levy in Gomoa East District

Tipper truck drivers, police clash over controversial levy in Gomoa East District

Tipper Truck Drivers in the Gomoa East District, have expressed their discontent after an altercation with the police regarding a levy imposed by the Gomoa East District Assembly.

As per a report from citinewsroom.com, the police made an effort to detain drivers who had not adhered to the directive, leading to a tense confrontation between the drivers and law enforcement officers.

The Gomoa East District Assembly implemented the Quarry Development Fund a few months ago, with the intention of utilizing the proceeds to finance development projects within the district.

As per the new policy, tipper truck drivers are mandated to pay GHS80.00 to the assembly for each truckload of quarry materials.

However, this policy has encountered strong resistance, with drivers arguing that the levy is exorbitant and could adversely impact their businesses.

Despite several meetings held by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Solomon Darko Quarm, to stress the importance of complying with the levy, registering with the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) to facilitate policy adherence has proven challenging.

The assembly’s decision to authorize the arrest of non-compliant drivers escalated the situation when personnel from the Central East Regional Police Command intervened to execute the arrests.

Ibrahim Abass, a tipper truck driver affiliated with PROTOA, contended that the assembly was treating them unfairly since they were merely tipper truck drivers who loaded at the quarry site. He also emphasized that the imposed fee was excessively high.

“The levy was introduced in 2022, and we were not properly informed about it. We are only Tipper Drivers and not quarry workers. What the Assembly is doing is not the best. We are gradually being driven out of business. President Akufo-Addo must intervene. We will not pay the money,” declared Ibrahim Abass.

Eric Addo, the station master for the PROTOA Tipper Truck Drivers Association, labelled the levy as obnoxious and called on the Minister of Local Government to intervene.

He also urged Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akufo Dampare to instruct the Central East Regional Command to exercise caution when addressing the matter suggesting that the levy should instead be imposed on quarry operators.

People in Kenya are very excited about the launch on Twitter, which they now call X. However, some people have mentioned that the prices, which range from $40 (£30) to $275, are too high for most people in East Africa to afford.

Brazilian murderer breaks out of US jail after week

Authorities in Pennsylvania are currently searching for a prisoner who managed to escape just one week after being given a lifelong prison sentence for committing a murder.

Danelo Cavalcante, a citizen of Brazil, ran away from Chester County Prison in West Chester early on Thursday.

A week ago, he was sent to prison for the rest of his life because he killed his ex-girlfriend by stabbing her, while her two little children watched.

Cavalcante is being sought after for killing someone in Brazil.

During a news conference on Thursday, the temporary leader of the prison, Howard Holland, did not provide any information about how the escape happened. He mentioned that they are currently conducting an investigation.

He was seen walking on a road in Pocopson Township, close to the prison, about an hour after he ran away.

People who live within a six-mile (9km) distance from the prison were informed about the escape and advised to be very careful. Many police agencies are now searching for him and are using dogs, drones, and helicopters to try and find him.

Chester County district attorney Deb Ryan warned us on Thursday not to get close to him if we see him. Please call 911. People think he is very dangerous.

Authorities say that in April 2021, Cavalcante killed his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandao by stabbing her in front of her young children, aged four and seven. Brandao was stabbed almost 40 times during the crime.

He got caught by the police a few hours later, after running away to Virginia.

Last week, the Chester County district attorney’s office said in a Facebook post that Brandao had warned that he would tell the police after discovering that Cavalcante had a warrant for murder in Brazil.

MsRyan, who is in charge of law enforcement in Chester County, told the Local Daily News that Cavalcante, a person who used to be part of a gang, is thought to have killed a man in Brazil in 2017 because the man owed him money.

The US Marshals Service and local authorities are giving $10,000 (£7,889) to anyone who can provide helpful information that leads to his capture.

OSP assures Ghanaians Cecilia Dapaah’s money will not disappear

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has reassured its dedication to conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the substantial funds held in the bank accounts of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah.

The OSP in response to a court order to return all seized properties of Cecilia Dapaah within seven days stated that the office would undergo all necessary legal processes to ensure Cecilia Dapaah’s money does not disappear.

The OSP declared these in a press statement yesterday, Thursday, August 31, 2023, signed by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

“The OSP assures the public that it will take all necessary legal steps to ensure that the seized amounts and the balances in Ms. Dapaah’s bank accounts and investments are neither concealed, lost, or otherwise dissipated, “part of the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the OSP has stated that it disagrees with the seven-day ultimatum given by the court to return Cecilia Dapaah’s properties to her.

The OSP added that contrary to the court’s claim that the application of the seizure and freezing orders filed by the OSP was done out of time, the said application was filed within the statutory time frame.

The OSP also added that it followed the right procedures to freeze and seize the properties of Cecilia Dapaah.

“Further, the freezing order was effected to aid the investigation, as required by law, not on the basis of the investigation, as indicated by the Court. Therefore, it cannot be said that the OSP did not carry out proper investigations to warrant the freezing order. The investigation has only commenced, and it is ongoing,” the statement added.

Madame Cecilia Dapaah has been in a legal tussle with the OSP after the institution froze her assets, including her bank accounts.

She is currently under investigation by the OSP for corruption and corruption-related offences after two of her house helps have been charged for stealing more than $1 million, €300,000 in cash and other valuable items from her residence at Abelemkpe.

This policy means that the United States will use visa restrictions against people who are thought to have harmed democracy in Sierra Leone. This can include people who have rigged elections or manipulated the voting process,” explained US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a statement.

Please rewrite the text in simpler language.

He said that people who scared or threatened voters, election observers, or civil society groups, or hurt human rights in Sierra Leone, would not be allowed to get US visas.

Paramount Chief of Goaso publicly rebukes MCE and MP for unfulfilled promises

During an event commemorating the 15th anniversary of his ascension to the throne, the Paramount Chief of Goaso Traditional Council, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah I, grew disillusioned with the commitments made by supporters of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration who addressed the gathering.

The Member of Parliament for the Asunafo North and Deputy Minister for Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Asunafo North, Osei Yaw Boahen, were at the receiving end of the chief’s frustration.

The MCE promised that the government would soon complete the refurbishment of one of the major roads in the district, the Goaso Roundabout to Juaban Extension road.

“As fowls drink water in bits so is the construction of Goaso Roundabout to Juaban Extension road going and it would be completed soon,” Yaw Boahen said in Twi.

Nana Kwasi Bosomprah, in his speech at the event which was held at Goaso, on August 27, 2023, expressed his dissatisfaction with the statement made by the MCE.

“The MCE said that fowls drink water in bits but now this is not the case. Fowls no longer take water in bits, they glob it.

“Look at this road we are living with and how the dust is killing us and you are telling us that you are doing it in bits. If I tell you that I agree with you then it is a lie,” he said.

The deputy minister for sports also said that the government would soon come to cut sod for the construction of an astroturf, promised.

The chief, in his response, said that he is tired of attending sod cutting events and should not be invited to sod cutting for the astroturf.

“When the MP was also speaking, he said that very soon there would be a sod cutting (for the astroturf). If he invites me to the event, I would not attend.

“I want the MP to say that the very day the sod cutting is done is the very day the construction would start because I’m tired of these promises. I’m no longer going to attend sod cutting events,” he fumed.

OSP disagrees with the decision of the Court on Cecilia Dapaah’s case

In a press statement released and signed by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, on Thursday, August 31, 2023, stated that even though the OSP regards the decision of the court, it disagrees with the court order.

The OSP refuted the court order on the grounds that, contrary to the court’s claim that the application of the seizure and freezing orders filed by the OSP was done out of time, the said application was filed within the statutory time frame.

“While the OSP respects the Court’s decision, it disagrees with the decision of the Court. First, the OSP believes that the Court’s computation of the time limitation is, with respect, erroneous. The OSP searched three (3) private residences associated with Ms Dapaah over the course of two (2) weeks. The searches and discovery were ongoing during that period. There is little doubt that the OSP filed its application within the statutory window once the search and discovery window is considered,” parts of the statement read.

The OSP also added that the freezing and seizure actions were not taken based on public sentiments but in the confines of reasonable suspicion that the amounts of money in the accounts of the embattled former minister were questionable.

“Second, the seizure by the OSP and the Special Prosecutor’s freezing order was effectuated on the very firm basis of reasonable suspicion that the amounts and bank balances were tainted property as Ms Dapaah prevaricated as to the source(s) of the amounts she reported stolen from her residence, the amounts discovered by the OSP in her residence, and the volume of transactions in her bank accounts and investments,” the statement added.

    Background

The OSP applied for the court to confirm its freeze order of some of Cecilia Dapaah’s assets including her bank accounts and monies found at her properties.

GhanaWeb, on August 9, 2023, reported that the embattled former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah’s assets and bank accounts containing millions of dollars and cedis had been frozen by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

Cecilia Dapaah has been in a legal tussle with the OSP after the institution froze her assets, including her bank accounts.

She is currently under investigation by the OSP for corruption and corruption-related offences after two of her house helps have been charged for stealing more than $1 million, €300,000 in cash and other valuable items from her residence at Abelemkpe.

However, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was today directed by an Accra High Court to return cash amounts seized from the residence of the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah within seven days.

UK weaponry trade to Ukraine ‘negative’ – Russian

Russia has announced that it will closely watch the company established by UK defense company BAE systems in Ukraine.

BAE has agreed to sell more weapons and equipment to Kyiv, and they will also start making light artillery there.

The Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said that the Russians did not view the move in a positive way.

BAE is proud of the weapons that the UK and other countries have sent to Ukraine.

Ever since Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, Britain has been providing a lot of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine.

The BBC knows that BAE hasn’t started a office or a factory in Ukraine yet, but they are talking about the possibility of doing it.

The company said that by making this change, they will be able to work closely with Ukraine to find and create potential partners and manufacture weapons in the country.

“The most important goal for us is to prioritize the creation of our own weapons,” wrote Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on X, a social media platform previously called Twitter.

Mr Zelensky told everyone after meeting with BAE’s boss, Charles Woodburn.

Mr Woodburn said that signing agreements and creating a legal organization in Ukraine strengthens our current trust and support. This will enable us to work together and offer more direct assistance to the Ukrainian armed forces.

However, Peskov expressed his disapproval of the decision, saying that they see it in a bad way. He also mentioned that any places that produce weapons, especially if those weapons are used against their country, will be closely watched by their military.

Interfax news agency reported that the spokesperson for the Kremlin said that foreign weapon manufacturing in Ukraine will not greatly alter the current circumstances.

“He also mentioned that it cannot have any effect on the already planned success and completion of the special military operation. ”

Ukraine and Sweden agreed to work together more closely on making, using, training, and repairing CV90 armored vehicles. These vehicles are currently made by BAE Systems’ Hägglunds company in Sweden.

Mr Zelensky mentioned in May that Kyiv and BAE were collaborating on a plan for the company to establish an office in Ukraine.

Kyiv wants to increase its weapons and military equipment, and also create jobs because the war has hurt its economy a lot.

Since February 2022, the share price of BAE has gone up by over 75%. They are now giving training and repair services to Ukraine’s military.

The international weapons, defense, and aviation company has 93,000 employees in approximately 40 countries across the globe.

This company is the largest defense contractor in Europe. They made over £23bn in sales and almost £2. 5bn in profits last year.

Nadia articulated that she has now distilled her parenting approach to a singular, all-encompassing idea: the unwavering showering of love upon her children at every juncture of their evolving lives.

The proud mother of four charming daughters openly professed that her children constitute the very foundation of her existence. Accompanying images featuring her cherished daughters, the former model conveyed her heartfelt sentiments:

“Before I had kids, I had a million ideas on how I would raise them. Now that they are here? I have ONLY ONE and that is to LOVE THEM. Love them through their GIGGLES, MESSY HANDS, and FEARLESSNESS.

“And when it is hard, like really hard, I’ll LOVE THEM through that too! My whole world revolves around them.”

This celebrated actress welcomed a set of twins in the year 2015, followed by the birth of her third child in 2017, and her fourth in 2018. Despite her fame, she has chosen to maintain a veil of privacy around her children, as evident in the photos she shares, which only capture their rear or partial side views.

Ukraine war: Russian internal drone strike on Pskov airbase

The chief of Ukraine’s military intelligence said that the drone attack on an airbase in the Russian city of Pskov was done from inside Russia.

Kyrylo Budanov said that two Ilyushin cargo planes were broken and two were harmed. Russia says four things were broken.

Mr Budanov did not indicate if the attack was done by people from Ukraine or Russia.

Ukraine’s drones attack Russia nearly every day. It had already accepted responsibility for the Pskov attack.

However, Budanov’s remarks suggest that the cause of the incident was not a long-range weapon.

On Thursday, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a weapon made in Ukraine successfully hit a target 700km away. Pskov is quite far away from the Ukrainian border, about 700km (434 miles) apart.

“We are operating from Russia,” Mr. Budanov said on Thursday to the War Zone website, but he did not mention the specific type or amount of drones used.

He said the drones attacked the parts of the aircraft that hold the fuel and an important part of the wing.

The broken planes are big cargo planes that can carry soldiers and equipment over long distances. These planes are very important in war for Russia.

According to BBC reporter Paul Adams, Ukrainian officials usually don’t talk much about attacks that happen in Russia. However, it seems that as the campaign continues to develop, officials in Kyiv are becoming more willing to say that these things are part of Ukraine’s war efforts.
Last night, drones attacked different places in Russia and the attacks are still ongoing.

There are reports that a factory near Moscow was hit. This factory makes electronic parts for rockets. However, these reports have not been confirmed yet.

But, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, the drones that were flying over Lyubertsy were brought down without causing any harm or injuries.

Like past attacks in Moscow, several flights from Moscow airports were postponed or canceled on Friday morning.

The Governor of Kursk Region, Roman Starovoyt, said that two buildings were damaged in the town of Kurchatov, near the Kursk nuclear plant.

Ukraine is still pushing back against Russia’s occupation of its land.

The Institute for the Study of War said that progress was made near Bakhmut in the east, and in the west of Zaporizhzhia region.

Goaso Chief fed up with failed promises; vows to boycott govt’s sod cutting events

Paramount Chief of Goaso Traditional Council, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah I, has declared his exasperation towards the government‘s failure to complete projects, despite cutting sods for the initiation of new projects.

Speaking during an event to mark the 15th anniversary of his enstoolment, he stated that he is fed up with promises being made yet not being fulfilled. He has thus stated that he will not attend an upcoming sod cutting event even if the Member of Parliament for the area invites him.

The frustration of the chief was directed towards the Member of Parliament for Asunafo North and Deputy Minister for Sports, Evans Opoku Bobie, as well as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Asunafo North, Osei Yaw Boahen.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) pledged that the government would shortly finish the renovation of a significant road in the district, namely the Goaso Roundabout to Juaban Extension road.

“As fowls drink water in bits, so is the construction of Goaso Roundabout to Juaban Extension road going and it will be completed soon,” Yaw Boahen said in Twi.

During the event held in Goaso on August 27, 2023, Nana Kwasi Bosomprah voiced his displeasure with the statement made by the MCE.

Nadia Buari deletes and unfollows John Dumelo’s wife

A few years ago, it was reported that John Dumelo was introduced to his wife, Gifty Mawunya Nkornu by his industry colleague, Nadia Buari.

According to several reports, Nadia Buari and Gifty were very good friends and when she introduced her to John Dumelo, chemistry sparked between them and they went ahead to get married.

Nadia Buari was the maid of honor at the wedding of the lovely couple. They always posted pictures and videos of each other. But when Gifty passed the bar a few months ago, to be called a lawyer, Nadia failed to congratulate her.

To add more soreness to the injury, Nadia also failed to send her condolences to John Dumelo and failed to show up at the funeral when he lost his mother. A close check reveals Nadia has unfollowed the couple.

    It’s unclear what the main cause of the fight between the former bff’s is but it’s clear they are not planning on being in each other’s lives anymore. See screenshots below;
