Joe Biden said that if the fighting in Gaza keeps going, it will give Hamas what they want.
The President of the United States said that Hamas started fighting on October 7th because they are afraid of Israelis and Palestinians living peacefully together.
“He said that if we keep fighting and causing harm, we will be giving Hamas what they want. ”
His tweet made people confused. Some people wondered if Biden was suggesting that the US might be less strict in the conflict.
Biden did not support stopping the fighting because he didn’t think it would help make peace between Israel and Hamas.
“He wrote in an article that as long as Hamas wants to destroy things, a ceasefire is not real peace. ”
However, a high-ranking official from Biden’s administration told Jewish Insider that his message on social media was “not a change in policy”. The official added that the message was a shortened version of a longer speech he gave last week.
“He said we should not give up hope for peace in the region. It’s very important to keep working towards a lasting peace through a two-state solution. “

‘It was incredible just to feel her breath’ – Hostage’s son
The son of Ada Sagi, who is from Britain and Israel, talked to the media after his 75-year-old mother was freed from Gaza last night.
Noam Sagi talked about what happened when they were reunited on BBC Radio 4’s Today show.
“It was an amazing night,” Noam says. “So many ideas and dreams and concerns and effort – everything led up to that moment. ”
To feel my mom – just to feel her breathing, her heartbeat, and to look into her eyes and see that she is okay and herself. “is really amazing in lots of ways. ”
Noam spent a long night with Ada, her other kids, and grandkids just holding hands and reconnecting on a deep level.
He says that after being held captive for 53 days without the freedom to make her own choices, the idea that she has more control over her life is amazing to Ada.
“Noam says she is very positive. She was concerned about us. ”
He doesn’t want to talk about what happened to Ada because his family is more focused on helping her get better. They are working with psychologists to understand what happened to her on 7 October. -

Parts of northern Gaza no longer habitable – UN agency
We just listened to Thomas White, who is in charge of UNRWA in Gaza. He visited the northern part of Gaza and the area around Gaza City.
Israel told people to leave the area when its troops started to move in October.
“It was creepy going from a busy city to a city with damaged roads and buildings,” he said on BBC Radio 4.
“You can drive through entire neighborhoods where all the buildings are broken and there are hardly any people outside. ”
He said that in some places where there is not much damage, there are some signs of life. A few people are sitting in front of their shops and in their doorways. But the city is still very quiet and feels strange.
The UN group also went to Jabalia in northern Gaza to give out aid supplies.
“Many people felt very relieved to finally have some help,” White said.
He said parts of northern Gaza are too damaged to live in.
Other areas seem to be mostly unaffected, but they don’t have electricity and only a little water.
“All the usual services and things that people do. ” “He said that they are basically not there,” . -

Hundreds wait in Gaza in frustration for cooking gas
Apart from discussing if the truce will continue, let’s remember the hard times people in Gaza are going through.
Here in Deir al-Balah, there are many people as far as you can see. It is meant to be a “safe” city in contrast to the destroyed north, where lots of people who had to leave their homes now live.
Many people are waiting in a long line for cooking gas. Some have been waiting for three days, sleeping outside in the cold, hoping to be able to cook food.
As many people wait, some get angry while sitting on their gas cylinders.
“Where are all the Arab and Muslim people. ” a woman in her middle years yells angrily while waiting in line for gas. “Where are the people who protect human rights. You have abandoned the Palestinians and left them to suffer, starve, and be harmed. “ -

British-Nigerian hacker acknowledges $6 million scam in US
A man from Britain and Nigeria admitted in a US court that he stole over $6 million in seven years.
Idris Dayo Mustapha, who is 33 years old, was involved in a group of hackers who broke into email and brokerage accounts of US companies from 2011 to 2018. They caused $6 million in losses.
Mustapha is a citizen of both the UK and Nigeria. He was sent back to Nigeria from the UK in August, two years after he was arrested.
He could go to jail for up to 20 years for his crimes.
He has not yet been told what his punishment will be.
Mustapha admitted in court in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday that he is guilty of four charges: hacking into computers, committing fraud with securities, using wires for fraud, and using unauthorized access devices.
Officials say Mustapha and his group broke into the computers of banks in the US to get secret user information.
Then they used the stolen information and passwords to move money and transfer investments from the victims’ accounts to their own accounts.
They also used the hacked accounts to do stock trades without the account holder knowing.
The US government had been trying to catch Mustapha for many years. -

10% of Heathrow Airport to be purchased by Saudi state fund
The country of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is going to buy 10% of Heathrow airport from the Spanish company Ferrovial.
An additional 15% of its parent company, FGP Topco, will be sold to a private equity fund called Ardian, which is based in France.
Ferrovial, who has had a part of the company since 2006, said that the agreement was worth £2. 37bn ($3bn)
The deal still needs approval from the government, the company said.
If the deal is accepted, Ferrovial will stop investing in the company that operates UK airports. They started with 56% ownership but it went down to 25% by 2013.
Other companies and organizations that have a stake in FGP Topco are Qatar Investment Authority, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Singapore’s GIC, Australian Retirement Trust, China Investment Corporation, and Universities Superannuation Scheme.
The airport is not making much money this year because it owes a lot of money and the costs to borrow more money are going up a lot.
The Civil Aviation Authority has decided to decrease the fees that passengers pay for using airport facilities like terminals, runways, baggage systems, and security.
The cost per person at Heathrow airport will be £31. 57 in 2023, but the regulator expects it to go down to £25. 43 in 2024 and stay about the same until 2026.
The bosses at Heathrow wanted to raise the charges to over £40, but airlines said they should only be around £18. 50
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is one of the world’s busiest government-owned investment funds. It has over $700 billion in assets because of its oil money. Recently, it has been putting money into sports like football and golf.
But the money is managed by a prince from Saudi Arabia named Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. His government has been accused of doing many bad things to people’s rights.
The US intelligence thinks that Prince Mohammed told people to kill a journalist named Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. But the prince is protected from being punished in the US, and he has been asked to visit the UK by the Saudi Arabian embassy. -

Expectations of prolonged ceasefire in Gaza as more hostages released
There is a chance that the agreement to stop fighting between Israel and Hamas could continue. They are having discussions in Qatar to try and make a new deal.
Israel says it got a list of people held captive in Gaza and they might be set free on Wednesday, which is the sixth day of the current truce.
On Tuesday, Hamas let go of 12 hostages and Israel released 30 more Palestinian prisoners.
Ada Sagi’s son said he was very happy when his mom, who turned 75 while in Gaza, was released. He told the BBC he was “over the moon” about it.
Palestinian prisoners say they were treated badly in Israeli jails. A 14-year-old boy said he saw people being hit. Israel has not said anything about it.
Hamas went over the border and killed 1,200 people in Israel on 7 October. They also took about 240 people as hostages.
From that time, Gaza’s Hamas-led health department reports that over 14,800 people have been killed in Israel’s campaign to strike back, including around 6,000 children.

Yoga and phone games mentioned by rescued Indian labourers
41 Indian workers were stuck in a tunnel in Uttarakhand for 17 days, but they have been rescued and are now safe in the hospital getting better.
In a video that was shared with the media, they can be seen eating on their hospital beds and seem to be feeling happy.
The workers were stuck in the tunnel on November 12th because part of it caved in from a landslide.
They were released on Tuesday evening after a big rescue effort that overcame a lot of problems.
The whole country felt relieved when the rescuers finally brought out the last of the 41 men from the dark tunnel.
They were carried out on stretchers through a 90cm (3ft) pipe that had been put in a wall of debris that was blocking them in.
This good ending happened after a day of waiting, as officials said they made progress in the rescue efforts.
Videos show the workers coming out of the tunnel, they are happy and friendly, waving and shaking hands with others.
Their friends and family were feeling very happy and relieved. Some of them had been waiting outside the tunnel for days, hoping that the rescue would go well.
They were putting flower necklaces on the workers, hugging them, and giving them candy.
Chaudhary Lal, who was in a photo kissing his son Manjit, one of the workers stuck, told the media that he was really happy and relieved to see his son.
“I already lost my son in an accident at a construction site. ” “I didn’t want to lose another person,” he said.Dhanpati, Ram Sundar’s mother, told the news that they celebrated Diwali in their village on Tuesday because her son came out of the tunnel safely. They didn’t celebrate it on 12 November, the actual festival day.
The families of the workers who were trapped have thanked the rescue workers for bringing their loved ones out safely.
At the same time, the workers have been talking to the media about what they have been through.
One of them told ANI that he recorded a video of his coworkers at Chinyalisaur Community Health Centre, where they went for health check-ups.
The workers are seen sitting on their beds, looking at their phones, eating, drinking tea, and taking pictures of themselves. Some people are brushing their teeth and some are talking by a water station.
Satya Dev, one of the men stuck, said in the Times of India that it felt very cramped inside the tunnel and he was happy to finally get out.
Another worker named Chamra Oraon told a newspaper called the Indian Express that sometimes he felt worried and anxious while working inside the tunnel, and he didn’t know when he would be able to come out.
“I never gave up,” he said. He played games on his phone and charged it with portable chargers from rescuers who passed them through a pipe.
“We couldn’t make any calls because there was no network, so we talked to each other and got to know each other,” he told the newspaper.
Another worker talked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone. They said that they would support and encourage each other to stay positive and also have meals together.
“He said we would walk and do yoga to stay active in the tunnel. ”
Another worker said they only turned on their phones to see the time to save battery. But when they got chargers, they could use their phones more to have fun.
A part of the 4. 5km (3 miles) Silkyara tunnel collapsed on 12 November. The tunnel is a part of a big government project called Char Dham. This project wants to make it easier for Hindu pilgrims to visit important religious sites in the Himalayan state by building roads.
Environmentalists and people who live there say that building things too quickly, like the Char Dham project, has caused the land to sink. They think this made the tunnel collapse. -

2022 saw record number of asylum petitions to Ireland
Every year, the analysis of migration numbers shows that more people moved to Ireland in 2022 compared to previous years.
The country had many people asking for protection, and lots of people coming to work and study.
More people are taken into the asylum when Ukrainian people are added.
People from Ukraine who are seeking asylum are counted separately because the rules for their asylum are different right now.
The ESRI report uses information from the government.
In 2022, 13,651 people from other countries asked for international protection in Ukraine. This is a big increase of 186% from 2019, when there were fewer travel restrictions because of the pandemic.
The main countries where most applicants came from were Georgia, Algeria, and Somalia. They made up 45% of all applicants.
Before, the ESRI said that the increase in asylum applications was probably because pandemic travel restrictions ended, countries were unstable, people came to the UK instead, and people’s connections to others made them apply for asylum.
People from Ukraine who have had to leave their homes and go to another country because of a difficult situation.Ukrainian refugees
Between March and December 2022, almost 68,000 people from Ukraine came to Ireland under the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive.
By December 2022, 87% of people who were allowed to stay in the country temporarily were still living there.
The sudden and unexpected increase put a lot of pressure on the resources of the Irish government. They had to take special actions like putting people in tents and using public buildings for temporary housing. In 2022, almost 40,000 people got permission to work, and most of these permits went to people in the IT sector.
The numbers also show that a lot of work permits were given to people from outside the EU or UK, which was the highest ever.
In 2022, almost 40,000 permits were given out, which is more than twice as many as in 2019, when there were a lot less.
This shows that more types of jobs can now be given work permits in Ireland because there are not many people without jobs.
India had the most people getting permits (15,695, 39%) followed by Brazil (4,304, 11%) and the Philippines (2,203, 6%).
In 2022, the IT sector got the most employment permits (10,382), and health and social work came in second (9,791).
Keire Murphy, who helped write the report, said that migration in Ireland is getting back to normal after travel restrictions, and the number of people coming to Ireland is the same as before or even higher.
She said: “The report shows important changes in 2022 and the challenges that came with them. ”Housing crisis
The population of the Republic of Ireland grew by almost 98,000 people from April 2022 to April 2023.
That was the largest increase since 2008 and was mostly caused by people moving to the country.
Ireland’s government was already having a hard time finding enough homes for people before more people started moving to the country.
Conservative protesters are having protests at places where asylum seekers live. They are trying to get more people to support them for the elections next year. -

‘Saddest’ elephant in the world passes away in a zoo in Philippines
An elephant, named one of the saddest in the world by activists, has passed away at a zoo in the Philippines. She spent most of her life alone in a small area.
People have shown their love and respect for Mali, who was the most popular animal at Manila Zoo for forty years.
The only lonely elephant in the country has been worrying animal rights activists for a long time.
One of them was Sir Paul McCartney, who wanted Mali to be moved to a safe place for elephants called a sanctuary.
Mali died on Tuesday and the Mayor of Manila, Honey Lacuna, told everyone in a Facebook video. She said going to the zoo to see Mali was one of her best memories as a kid.
On Friday, the vet at the zoo said the Asian elephant was in pain because she kept rubbing her trunk on the wall.
On Tuesday morning, Mali was laying on her side and taking deep breaths. The vets gave her medicine for allergies and vitamins, but she died in the afternoon. The doctors found that she had cancer in some of her body parts and a blockage in her heart’s main artery.
Mali, also known as Vishwa Ma’ali, was given as a gift to the former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, by the Sri Lankan government in 1981 when she was almost a year old. Manila Zoo also had another elephant named Shiva, who came in 1977 and passed away in 1990. Mali was the only elephant at the zoo for a long time. During the worst part of the pandemic, Manila Zoo also helped give vaccinations to children. Mali the elephant was there to make the kids happy.
Animal lovers were angry about the bad conditions at Manila Zoo and said the people taking care of the animals didn’t have the right tools to help Mali when she was sick. The zoo staff said the elephant should stay in the zoo because she doesn’t know how to live in the wild.
“I want to join the many people who are supporting moving Mali, the lonely elephant at Manila Zoo, to a sanctuary in Thailand as soon as we can,” he said.
Morrissey, the singer from the band The Smiths, also wrote a letter to try to help Mali, but she is still at Manila Zoo.
Peta said a very sad elephant from around the world has died. “Rest well, Mali. You should have had better. ”
On X, who used to be called Twitter, Filipinos from different generations remembered how they used to visit Mali during school field trips in Manila. They were sad that Mali died without any company.
One person remembered seeing Mali for the first time 11 years ago. “When you see Mali walking, you can tell that she is very lonely. ” It made me really sad. It was said that Mali has died.
“Feeling sad because Mali, the famous elephant in the Philippines, has died. ” “I hope there won’t be any more elephants kept in zoos,” another person on X said.
During a meeting with the media, the mayor of Manila said she wants to ask the government of Sri Lanka for a new elephant to be given to the Philippine capital.
She said that the people who took care of Mali for a long time were very sad about her death. She also mentioned that they never thought about moving Mali to a sanctuary because she had been kept captive for so long.
“Even though she looked lonely, we were there for her,” Ms Lacuna said in Tagalog, her voice shaking. “She was the person who welcomed everyone at Manila Zoo. ” She is important to us and is a big part of our lives. -

Kenyan parliament outlaws president’s favourite Kaunda suits
The Kenya parliament has decided that people can’t wear a suit named after the late Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda in the building.
The Speaker of Parliament, Moses Wetangula, said that Kaunda suits and traditional African clothes are not allowed.
Kenyan President William Ruto usually wears them for important events.
This has made the Kaunda suit popular with politicians. It’s a safari jacket with matching trousers.
The suit is called after the former president of Zambia who liked to wear them and made them popular among political leaders in sub-Saharan Africa.
The suit, also known as the Mao Zedong suit, doesn’t have a collar and often has short sleeves.
On Tuesday, Mr Wetangula said he banned the suit because new fashion trends were not following the dress code for Parliament.
He said that men should wear a coat, collared shirt, tie, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and shoes.
“Ladies can wear business attire, formal clothes, or smart casual outfits. ” Skirts and dresses should be long enough to cover the knees and look appropriate. “He said we can’t wear shirts without sleeves,”
The Kaunda suit has been worn by some Members of Parliament in the past and it has been allowed in parliament.
Mr Wetangula admitted that these kinds of suits were allowed in the past, but now it’s important to stop allowing them because they go against the rules for how to dress in parliament.
The Kaunda suit has become popular on social media in Kenya because Mr. Ruto started wearing them at official events.
The decision to not allow people to wear suits has caused different reactions on social media. Some people are confused why an African parliament would ban traditional African clothing, while others agree with the decision.
Some people made fun of the ban, saying that only the president would be allowed to wear the Kaunda suit.
“Right when you think you’ve seen everything. “I think the suits like Kaunda’s have been saved for the president,” said someone on X (formerly Twitter). -

Ecuadorian indigenous people prevails in legal battle to restore ancestral lands after 80 years
An indigenous group in Ecuador won a court case to get back their land in the Amazon jungle. They were forced to leave 80 years ago because of a war.
An appeals court in Ecuador agreed with the Siekopai nation’s claim to Pë’këya, a diverse area in northwest Ecuador near the border with Peru.
The Siekopai people were forced to leave their homes because of fighting between Peru and Ecuador in the 1940s.
In September of last year, a small community of only about 800 people sued the government of Ecuador. They said the government was not respecting their right to own land that has been in their families for a long time.
The court said the Ministry of Environment in Ecuador has 45 days to give the Siekopai people a property title for 104,000 acres of land.
Elias Piyahuaje, the President of the Siekopai Nation of Ecuador, said this is a very important time for his people. “We have always owned and will always own the land of Pë’këya. ” “We have been fighting for 80 years to get our land back. ”
This is the first time the Ecuadorian government is giving land title to an indigenous group in a protected area. It’s a big deal and can help other indigenous people get their land back too.
Piyahuaje said: “We are trying to keep our culture alive on this planet. ” “We need this land to survive as Siekopai people. “ -

Rural Haiti seeing an increase in gang violence – UN report
Finland is going to close the last open border point with Russia on Thursday. This means that the border between Finland and Russia will be completely closed for two weeks.
The Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, said that Russia is helping people to come to the Finnish border, even in very cold winter weather. Finland is sure they will stop this from happening.
The final checkpoint at the eastern border will close at midnight on November 30th and will not reopen until December 13th, according to Finland’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Helsinki is trying to stop people from crossing over from Russia more and more. This has been happening a lot since Russia invaded Ukraine last year and Finland joined NATO this year.
Finland’s Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said we need to close the whole eastern border with Russia to protect Finland’s national security from Russian activity.
The Finnish Border Guard wants to stop people from entering Finland illegally from Russia.
Finland makes sure its borders are safe and the Finnish Border Guard is ready to act fast on the Government’s new decisions.
Finland has a 830-mile-long border with Russia. The crossing was one of the only places where Russians could enter after many countries in the West closed their airspace and borders to Russian planes because of the Ukraine invasion.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Tuesday that Finland’s choice to shut down all border checkpoints with Russia will hurt Finnish citizens. He also called it “unreasonable. ”
“They closed the border, what should we do. Finnish people will be in trouble,” Grushko said at a meeting in Moscow.
We can talk about smart choices and then try to find a reason behind them. “But sometimes people make irrational decisions,” he said. He also mentioned that only around 700 migrants tried to cross the border between Russia and Finland during this time.
The Finnish government said that it will close four border points with Russia to stop people from crossing the border illegally. This will happen from this week until February 2024.
On Tuesday, the interior ministry of Finland said that people are still entering the country from the eastern border even though there are restrictions.
“Since the start of August, almost 1,000 people from other countries came to Finland without a visa at the eastern border checkpoints. ” Many of them have asked for protection in Finland, the government said.
“In very special situations, the government is closing the eastern border completely for a short time. This is needed to stop something bad from happening and to keep the country safe. ” The ministry said in a press release on Tuesday.
NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg said Russia is using migrants to put pressure on Finland at their border.
“We have seen them using power, cyber attacks, and secret operations to try to weaken our democracies. ” Stoltenberg said Russia is using migration to put pressure on neighboring countries.
NATO has not been asked by Finland for help with guarding its borders. Stoltenberg said he believes Finland can handle the issue on its own.
He liked that the European Union’s border agency, Frontex, was going to send 50 guards to the Finnish border.
Helsinki stopped people from entering at the end of September 2022 because many Russians were trying to escape President Vladimir Putin’s call for hundreds of thousands of citizens to join the war. Over 8,500 people from Russia came across the border in just one day.
Earlier this year, the Finnish Border Guard started building a fence along the eastern border as a test. -

France to outlaw smoking in parks and beaches
France will stop people from smoking on beaches and in public parks. The government wants to prevent 75,000 deaths each year from smoking-related illnesses.
The government wants to stop people from smoking by 2032. They have made some rules to help achieve this.
The French health minister, Aurélien Rousseau, said that people will not be allowed to smoke at the beach, in parks, forests, and near schools in France soon.
The minister didn’t say when exactly, but he hinted that people might get fines as soon as next year in an interview with CNN-affiliate BFMTV.
Rousseau said that the price of cigarettes will go up slowly. In 2025, a pack will cost 12 euros ($13), and in 2027, it will cost 13 euros ($14).
France had already decided in September that it would not allow disposable e-cigarettes.
“We want this plan to stop making smoking seem unimportant,” Rousseau said to BFMTV.
“He said we need to stop finding enjoyment in smoking, and we shouldn’t accept that 200 people die each day from smoking-related causes. “ -

Health professionals ‘trapped’ in hospital during Israeli attack in West Bank
The leader of Doctors Without Borders said on Tuesday that he and his staff were stuck in a hospital in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank because of an Israeli raid.
Two Palestinians were hurt and they died because the ambulances couldn’t get to them in time.
“For two hours, we couldn’t go to help people because Israeli military vehicles were blocking the hospital entrance and road. Ambulances couldn’t get out and people couldn’t reach us. ” Christos Christou wrote on a social media platform.
A doctor feels really bad when they know there are people who need our help and can’t get it, he said.
A video from CNN shows army vehicles in the city close to the refugee camp and the sound of loud gunfire. A representative from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Jenin said they helped three people who were shot, and that Israeli forces have surrounded the city’s main hospitals.
The small camp is home to over 17,000 Palestinian refugees and has been a frequent site of violence in the West Bank. Israel says that terrorists are in the area.
At least 14 Palestinians died in the camp this month when the Israeli military tried to stop terrorist activities and destroy the home of a man who killed an off-duty Israeli soldier. During the weekend, five Palestinians died in Jenin when Israeli forces came in, as reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are fighting against terrorism in the area and will keep doing so throughout the night.
Mahmoud Al-Saadi, who speaks for PRCS Jenin, told CNN that the Israeli military has surrounded the main hospitals in Jenin and is checking all ambulances going to or from these hospitals.
“We took three people with gunshot wounds to the hospital tonight. It’s really tough here with a lot of shooting and fighting, and we can hear explosions far away,” said Al-Saadi.
Al-Saadi said a young man with special needs was taken out of a medical vehicle and arrested by Israeli forces in the city earlier today.
The man was shot in the leg and when paramedics tried to take him to the hospital, the Israeli military arrested him.
The PRCS’s medical team taking care of the hurt man were stopped for about an hour by the Israeli military in front of the hospital.
“The Israeli army stopped the ambulance for about one hour in front of the hospital before transferring the wounded man to an Israeli military ambulance,” Al-Saadi explained.
The fighting between Israel and Hamas has spread to the West Bank, where there have been attacks and fights between settlers and Palestinians, resulting in the deaths of many Palestinians.
Israeli soldiers and settlers have killed at least 240 Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem since October 7, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. -

Pro-democracy leaders in Hong Kong present last defence as national security trial draws close
Many important pro-democracy people in Hong Kong are close to finding out what will happen to them in the city’s biggest national security case so far. Prosecutors and lawyers have returned to court to make final speeches almost three years after the mass arrests.
47 people were accused of planning to overthrow the government for organizing a non-official election to choose who would run for city lawmaker positions in 2020.
The people being tried, say that the plan was just a normal part of the varied and opposing politics that has always been allowed in Hong Kong. Lawyers say it was a big plan to go against the Hong Kong government in an organized way.
If found guilty, they could be sentenced to life in prison.
The government is taking strong action against the pro-democracy group in Hong Kong. This is the biggest crackdown since Beijing made a law for national security in 2020. This came after big protests against the government in 2019.
Critics are worried about what happened to the “Hong Kong 47” because it shows how the national security law has stopped people from speaking out and being active in politics in the city, even though they used to be allowed to do so in its partial democracy.
Many people are being kept in jail for over two years in a case that is being closely followed. Hong Kong’s court system, which has been important for its success as a financial center, is being watched to see how it will use the national security law while Beijing is gaining more control.
The Hong Kong government keeps saying the national security law is not taking away people’s freedom. Instead, it says the law has stopped the confusion and brought back calmness to the city.
The 47 people on trial include experienced politicians, elected officials, and young protest leaders, as well as teachers, union members, reporters, and healthcare workers. They come from different age groups and political beliefs – from middle-of-the-road democrats to people who support Hong Kong making its own decisions.
Some famous people in Hong Kong include Joshua Wong, 27, who led protests, Benny Tai, 59, who co-founded a movement, and Claudia Mo, 66, who was a journalist and is now a lawmaker.
There were a lot of police outside the courthouse on Wednesday morning. They were walking around and keeping an eye on the area.
One person, Alexandra Wong, was taken away by the police for a search after holding a British flag outside the court.
Also called Grandma Wong, the 67-year-old woman was always present at the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. She went back to the court and showed a sign that said “Free 47, free everyone. ”
47 people who were fighting for democracy were all arrested at the same time in January 2021. They were officially charged two months later. Thirty-one people admitted they did something wrong and said they were guilty. In Hong Kong, this can mean they might get a shorter punishment. The court in West Kowloon began listening to their case in February of this year. After 116 days of court meetings, the lawyers for 16 people who said they did not do anything wrong are back in court to try one last time to prove their innocence.
People who support someone filled the seats in the courtroom on Wednesday when the hearing started. Some people shouted the names of activists as they were brought into the courtroom. The defendants nodded or waved to show they saw the acknowledgment.
Some people say they didn’t do it. One is Gwyneth Ho, 33, a former journalist who showed a mob attacking pro-democracy protesters in a subway station. The other is Leung Kwok-hung, 67, who is known as “Long Hair” and has been a strong supporter of the pro-democracy movement in the city for many years.
Meanwhile, the lawyers are almost done explaining why they think the activists should be found guilty.
The prosecutors and defense lawyers will take a few days to finish their final speeches. They have submitted over a thousand pages of legal documents to the judges.
The three judges in charge of the case said they will take another three to four months to make a decision during the hearing on Wednesday.
The charges are about a special vote that the opposition groups organized in July 2020 to choose the candidates they liked for the Legislative Council election. This election was supposed to happen later that year.
Political competitions like this happen a lot in democratic countries everywhere. Hong Kong has not been a full democracy, but after Britain gave it back to China in 1997, a small group of people who disagreed with the government was allowed to exist for a while.
The scenery changed after the big and sometimes violent protests for democracy in 2019 and when the opposition won by a lot in local elections at the end of that year.
The pro-democracy group wanted to use the primary election to win enough seats in the legislature to stop government laws from passing.
Officials in Hong Kong accused the primary vote of being a dangerous plan to weaken the government and gain power by winning the majority of seats and using that power to stop new laws from being passed.
Democracy activists in Hong Kong have been in court before. Many people have been tried and sent to jail for their activism. The trial of the “Hong Kong 47” is the biggest case against democracy leaders during Beijing’s rule. It is being closely watched in Hong Kong and around the world.
The trial shows how the legal system in Hong Kong has changed because of the national security law. This law makes it a crime to break away from the government, undermine it, commit acts of terrorism, or work with foreign countries. The maximum punishment for these crimes is life in prison.
In China, the courts are controlled by the ruling Communist Party and almost everyone who goes to trial is found guilty. On the other hand, Hong Kong uses a legal system based on common law, which was not changed when the former British colony was given back to China in 1997.
However, new legal decisions are being made in cases involving national security.
The trial of the “Hong Kong 47” was held without a jury, which goes against the usual way trials are done. This was allowed by a law imposed by Beijing. Three High Court Judges chosen by the city’s leader decide on national security cases. No trials with a jury have been held for cases about keeping the country safe in the city.
The law makes it harder to get bail. Thirty-two people have been kept in jail since 2021 because they were not allowed to pay bail. This is not common for cases that do not involve murder. Only 15 people were allowed to leave jail while they wait for their trial, but two of them were sent back to jail because they didn’t follow the rules of their release.
It also lets cases move to the mainland for trial in very serious situations. The leader of the city, John Lee, was asked if a new proposed bill in the US would cause cases in Hong Kong to be moved to the US.Lee said he believes Hong Kong can deal with security problems, including big cases. He trusts the city’s judges and law enforcement officers to handle it.
Legal experts and governments in the West are upset that the national security law has made it harder for the city to have its own fair court system. But officials in Beijing and Hong Kong say it’s necessary for national security and have told foreign countries not to get involved in the city’s legal and internal matters.
Prior to the trial starting in February, the Hong Kong government criticized the trial as a scandal and an act that goes against the law in Hong Kong.
The election for the Legislative Council was postponed to 2021 because of health concerns during the coronavirus pandemic. The defendants were hoping to win by holding the primary vote.
While delaying, the authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong changed the rules for the city’s elections. They made the rules stricter to remove candidates who are not considered patriotic.
The government in Hong Kong has no lawmakers who support democracy, and there will also be no pro-democracy candidates in the district council elections in December. -

All 41 workmen saved from collapsing tunnel in India after 17-day battle
A group of 41 workers were greeted with cheers as they came out from a collapsed tunnel under the Himalayas. It was the end of a risky and amazing rescue mission that took weeks to drill through rocks and debris.
The men were stuck for 17 days while teams drilled a way out of the mountain. They faced problems but eventually drilled the last few meters by hand.
Video from the scene showed Pushkar Singh Dhami, the leader of Uttarakhand state, meeting with the workers as they came out of the tunnel. Everyone seemed very happy.
Dhami said at a press conference on Tuesday night that all 41 workers are healthy.
Because they have grown up in a different place, we will do what the doctor recommends. They will be watched closely at the beginning. “No one is being harsh or negative,” Dhami said.
They don’t have any signs of being weak or having a fever, they are all healthy. They could have used stretchers to come out, but they chose to crawl out by themselves,” he said. Then he thanked the workers, engineers, and government departments who helped with the rescue.
The workers who were saved will get a check for 100,000 rupees (about $1,200) each, Dhami said.
Dhami said we will also ask the company if the 41 workers can go home and be with their family for 15 days, 20 days, or 1 month.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the successful rescue is making everyone feel emotional. He said this in a statement on X.
“I want to tell the men stuck in the tunnel that your courage and patience are inspiring everyone,” he wrote.
I also praise the determination of everyone involved in this rescue. Their courage and persistence have given our hardworking brothers a new chance at life. Modi said that everyone working on this mission has shown a great example of people helping each other and working together.
The men were stuck since November 12 when the tunnel they were building in India’s Uttarakhand state collapsed, blocking their only way out with a lot of rocks, concrete, and metal.
The first workers were taken out after many painful problems. The machines used to dig through the rubble broke down, so the workers had to dig by hand and use more dangerous methods to rescue them.
The engineers tried using a drill to clear the debris, but it broke down. They had to stop using it and instead, dig by hand to rescue the trapped men.
At the same time, rescuers were drilling down through the unstable mountain to reach the trapped men in case the first way didn’t work. However, the first plan ended up being successful.
After finishing drilling, the rescuers put a big pipe through the exit shaft to bring the men to safety.
The workers, who came from poor states in India, are getting food, water, and oxygen through a long pipe. The authorities say they are still healthy.
The doctors at the location have been talking to the men inside regularly, giving them advice on how to stay positive and calm. Their families have been meeting at the end of the tunnel every day to pray for their loved ones to come back safely.
The tunnel is a part of a big project called Modi’s Char Dham Highway. It’s supposed to upgrade the road, but some people think it’s a bad idea. The country wants to make its roads and transportation better so that people can easily get to important Hindu pilgrimage sites.
Environmentalists are upset about the project because they think it might harm the Himalayan region, where many people are already feeling the effects of the climate crisis.
A group of experts told India’s highest court that building highways will cause more landslides and soil erosion in a fragile environment, as stated in a 2020 court report.
Officials are looking into why the tunnel collapsed and they will probably check if drilling on the mountain had something to do with it. CNN has reached out to the Indian government’s department for environment and climate change.
A tunnel in India collapsed recently, adding to a list of construction accidents in the country. India has been working hard to improve its infrastructure and transportation system, spending a lot of money to do so.
In August, a lot of workers died when a bridge being built fell down in the northeastern state of Mizoram. In June, a big bridge being built over the River Ganges in Bihar collapsed for the second time in a year. People are wondering if it was built well. -

Eight people killed as US Osprey aircraft crashes off coast of Japan
A spokesperson for the Japan shore Guard said that eight people were on board when a US military Osprey aircraft crashed off the shore of Yakushima Island in the southern Kagoshima prefecture on Wednesday.
An aeroplane and patrol boat from the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters have been sent to the crash site, according to the spokeswoman, who stated that the Coast Guard received information about the incident at approximately 12:47 a.m. ET on April 27.
A representative stated that details regarding any injuries are not available at this time.
The Osprey military aircraft has been involved in other fatal crashes throughout the years; this one is the most recent.
This August, during military drills in Australia, an Osprey crashed, killing three US Marines and critically wounding numerous more.
Five US Marines lost their lives in 2022 when their MV-22B Osprey aircraft crashed when they were on a training mission close to Glamis, California. During NATO training operations in Norway that same year, an Osprey aircraft carrying four US service men went down and killed them.
The Osprey is a very adaptable aircraft that can cruise at high speed like a typical turboprop plane with wings and take off vertically like a helicopter.
Although Ospreys are generally safe to fly, since the aircraft’s introduction in the 1980s, there have been technical and operational problems, according to CNN military expert and retired US Air Force Colonel Cedric Leighton

10-month-old allegedly missing or held captive in Gaza
Kfir Bibas is 10 months old and has spent over a fifth of his life as a captive. His cute face and red hair show the pain and suffering of Israel’s hostage families.
Kfir was taken by Hamas militants from his home in southern Israel over 50 days ago. His family still doesn’t know if he is safe or even alive.
“We are very worried about him,” said Eylon Keshet, a family member, as he held a picture of the baby boy.
“We don’t know if he can do it. ” Every day he stays there, his life is in real danger.
Kfir, his little brother Ariel (who is 4 years old), their mom Shiri and maybe their dad Yarden were taken from Nir Oz, an Israeli kibbutz that was really hurt when it was attacked by Hamas fighters on October 7th. The attackers killed many people and kidnapped many others. They also destroyed homes and stole things.
Hamas killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel, most of them were not soldiers. This was the biggest attack on Israel since the country was created in 1948.
A scary video of the Bibas family being taken away was one of the first shocking moments of the day. Shiri held her children tightly, and Ariel was still using his pacifier. The kids are quiet and not crying while their mom, who is scared, is being surrounded by Hamas fighters. She has a blanket around her. Keshet said their grandparents died in the attack.
The boys’ dad was hit by a hammer, his sister said. We don’t know how he is or where he is right now. Yarden’s cousin Keshet says that the family thinks Yarden was taken away from his wife and kids, because they saw some videos.
Keshet said it doesn’t make sense for anyone to let this continue. That’s wrong and cruel. “I’m really frightened. ”
Hamas had more than 200 people they were keeping as captives in Gaza before they were released through talks with Israel. Groups of Israeli citizens and other people, mostly women and children, have been released every day since last Friday because of a new peace agreement.
In Gaza, more than 14,800 Palestinians have been killed, including 6,000 children, since Israel started attacking in response to Hamas terror attacks on October 7. These figures come from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the West Bank, which gets its information from health authorities in Gaza run by Hamas.
As part of an agreement to stop fighting, Israel has let go of Palestinian women and children who were in jail. Many of them were never accused or given a punishment.
The first four-day break from fighting was made longer by two more days on Monday. This gave the families of the hostages who were released a chance to share their experiences of being held captive.
On Monday, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said that the Bibas family is not currently being held captive by Hamas. This makes it harder to free them.
Hamas is in charge of Gaza, but there are also other groups like Palestinian Islamic Jihad that do things there.
Kfir, Ariel, and Shira are not on the list of people who will be let go. About eight children are still being kept by Hamas, and their sad faces have made the country mourn and ask for them to come back.
More than 100 people met in Tel Aviv and released orange balloons into the sky to remember the two Bibas boys and their mother. Photos from the agency show the event.
Kfir’s young age has gotten a lot of attention and concern in Israel. The baby boy was still drinking milk from a bottle and couldn’t eat solid food yet when he was taken.
“Keshet said she needs baby formula and is very worried about Ariel’s health. ”
“Ariel is a very delicate child and has a lot of medical problems,” he explained. “She is four years old and has a skin condition that requires treatment. ” “He is a very energetic kid who really enjoys playing with cars and tractors,” he said.
Shiri’s cousin, Yifat Zailer, has been feeling sad and worried recently.
“The small bit of hope we have helps us keep going,” she told CNN. We are begging for our family to be set free.
Every day, Zailer wants her family to be on the list of hostages who will be set free.
A 10-month-old baby is still being kept against their will. He is in danger of losing his life. She said that children should not be used as tools or held hostage. Her face looked thin and her eyes looked sad.
“I hope this will end soon, and we can start to fix our completely broken life here. “ -

Ukraine intensifies its efforts to counter Russia’s electronic warfare
In early November, a video from a drone showed a bomb hitting and destroying three antennas on top of a building. The person in charge of the Ukrainian drones said they destroyed a Russian electronic warfare system near Donetsk in the eastern front.
Ukraine is trying hard to keep up with Russia in electronic warfare.
This attack also shows how quickly Kyiv is trying to destroy Moscow’s technology in battle – a sign of how crucial it could be for the future of the war.
Electronic warfare, also known as EW, uses the electromagnetic spectrum for weapons and tactics. Both armies in this war are using it. It’s mainly electronic jammers that mess up GPS guided missiles, making them miss their targets.
For nearly six months, Ukraine has been fighting back against Russia. Russia has not only strengthened its physical defenses but also its electronic ones. Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines have to adjust to this quickly.
Pavlo Petrychenko, the leader of the group that flew the drones for Ukraine’s 59th Motorized Brigade, said it’s really important to destroy these systems in order to free up more land in Ukraine. The video he shared on social media is just one of many reports from Ukrainian military and media about successful attacks on Pole-21 systems in the past few months.
“At first, they messed with our communication using electronic warfare. They disrupted our walkie-talkies, radios, phones, and drones,” he said in a video call to CNN from near Avdiivka, where some of the toughest fighting in the war is happening.
“But when we got equipment from other countries, they used it to stop our weapons from working. ”
Petrychenko said that Russia uses electronic warfare to defend against the US-provided HIMARS and Excalibur 155 because they are guided by satellites.
And that’s why Ukraine has a problem. Russian jammers are causing problems for Ukraine by making their high-tech weapons from the West, which are guided by smart technology, less effective.
Smart missiles and rocket launch systems like HIMARS are more easily affected by electronic warfare than unguided weapons because they need GPS to accurately hit their targets. In the past, Russia and Ukraine had a lot of unguided weapons.
The Pole-21 system is made to block GPS signals and keep Russian things safe from drones and missiles. It’s just one part of Moscow’s increasing electronic weapons.
Jamming and spoofing GPS are techniques the Kremlin uses to confuse enemy drones or missiles. It also messes up radar, radio, and cell communications.
In September, the news agency TASS said that the Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Mishustin, told a government meeting that they made twice as much military equipment, including EW, in the first eight months of the year.
Professionals and Ukrainian authorities say Russia has completely combined electronic warfare with its soldiers.
The top leader of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, said in a recent essay that Russia is making a lot of “trench electronic warfare” equipment.
“The Russian soldiers have a lot of this equipment at the tactical level, and even though they have lost some, Moscow still has a big advantage in electronic warfare,” Zaluzhny said.
Zaluzhny said that American-made Excalibur shells have become less effective because the GPS targeting system can be easily affected by enemy electronic warfare.
Pentagon spokesperson Major. Charlie Dietz said that Russian jamming has been noticed in some American systems, like HIMARS rocket launchers, but it hasn’t stopped these systems from working.
Dietz said the department has made changes to make those weaknesses smaller. They are working hard to improve and update the systems. They are making the updates as fast as they can to fight against EW jamming.
Ukraine said it can make a lot more drones in its country this year. This has changed the way battles are fought.
The man leading this project is Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov. He wants to have the same success with electronic warfare as he did with drones, because drones are often targeted by electronic warfare.
“We are not only increasing the production of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), but we are also increasing the production of electronic warfare equipment and changing the way we use it,” Fedorov said in an interview with CNN from Kyiv. “We are changing our strategy for using this technology. ”
This means not only adding electronic warfare to protect the battlefield, but doing it cleverly.
Fedorov says we shouldn’t have too many electronic warfare systems on the battlefield. Instead, he thinks we should make systems that can be controlled from far away and only target the enemy’s equipment.
If you don’t be careful, electronic warfare systems could end up causing problems for you by taking down your own drones. Fedorov said this.
In November 2022, a report from the British think tank Royal United Services Institute said that Russia had accidentally targeted their own forces in the early days of the war. This caused them to reduce their electronic warfare efforts to avoid disrupting their own battlefield communications.
The most important thing right now, according to Fedorov, is for Ukraine to get the technology to program its drones to attack the enemy’s electronic warfare equipment on a big scale.
This would change the game for drone operators like Petrychenko, who say they are trying to outsmart Russian equipment. At the moment, their best chance is for videos, like the one of his drone strike in early November, to become really popular, said Petrychenko. With many Ukrainian soldiers on social media, any popular video like this would help them spot Russian antennas on the battlefield.
It’s obvious that this is making a big impact outside of Ukraine.
“I believe the situation in Ukraine shows us what modern warfare looks like today,” said Kari Bingen, who works at a think tank and used to work at the Pentagon. It is a future where electronic warfare abilities and strategies are combined with regular military operations.
Dietz, who speaks for the Pentagon, said the US is working on its strategies for electronic warfare and sees it as a very important part of today’s and future military battles.
Fedorov said Ukraine is putting money into electronic warfare, and they are also encouraging their own companies to make drones.
He openly says that Ukraine needs help from its Western allies for equipment and expertise.
The West has all the technology that we need. The question might be about how to use it, and it’s a very important question. We need to think about the new technology we will use in the war. -

Indian tunnel collapse: All 41 worker saved from India tunnel disaster
All 41 construction workers who were stuck in a tunnel in northern India after a landslide on 12 November have been saved.
No one thinks any of the men were hurt, but they are getting medical checkups at a hospital close by.
One by one, they were taken out through a big pipe that was put into the tunnel that fell down in Uttarakhand state. The pipe was 90cm (3ft) wide.
The state government called the rescue “good news. ” “for the whole country”, and the Indian PM praised the trapped men’s “amazing” bravery and patience.
The rescue team had many problems, but a group of “rat-hole” miners used small drills to finally rescue everyone.
Officials provided the men with oxygen, food, and water through a small pipe. The president of India, Droupadi Murmu, has made a post on X.
She is very happy and relieved to hear that all the workers stuck in a tunnel in Uttarakhand have been saved.
She says that the rescue effort faced challenges, but it shows how strong people can be.
She says: “The country honors their strength and is thankful to them for building important buildings and roads, even though it was dangerous and far from their families. ”
“I want to say well done to the teams and experts who worked really hard to complete one of the toughest rescue missions ever. Good job” -

Joanna Parrish murder: Ex-wife of serial killer tried in UK student murder case
The former wife of a famous French killer is being tried for helping to murder a British student named Joanna Parrish in 1990.
Monique Olivier, who is 75 years old and already in jail for life, is accused of helping Michel Fourniret, who is now dead, commit two more murders, including one of a nine-year old girl.
Joanna Parrish, who was 20 years old, was found dead in a river close to the town of Auxerre.
The student from Leeds University was teaching English during their gap year.
She was hurt and attacked.
More than 30 years later, the trial in the Paris suburb of Nanterre is the first opportunity for her family to finally see some fairness and punishment for the person responsible. Her mom and dad, who are not married anymore, are coming.
Fourniret was given the nickname “Beast of the Ardennes” because he was found guilty of killing seven young women in 2008. Ten years later, he admitted to killing Joanna Parrish and two others while he was in prison.
In France, people are most interested in the story of nine-year-old Estelle Mouzin. She went missing on her way home from school in Guermantes, which is southeast of Paris, in 2003. People think she was the last person that Fourniret hurt. They have never found her body.
Fourniret died in 2021 before he could go to court for these three killings.
Joanna Parrish was teaching English in Auxerre when she was killed.
Olivier was found guilty in the 2008 trial for helping Fourniret with his murderous sex obsession. As the woman working with him, she gained the trust of victims who would have been more cautious if it was just a man.
In court on Tuesday, the judge asked her if she had anything to say. She replied, “I feel bad about everything that happened. ”
In the first murder, the woman picked up a stranger while she was in the van. Then she picked up another person on the road who was pretending to be a hitch-hiker.
Olivier met Fourniret in the 1980s after he put an ad in a Catholic magazine. He was in prison for rape.
They started writing letters to each other, and he confessed that he was very focused on women who were still virgins. He called young girls “membranes on legs”.
In a strange turn of events, in 1988 the two people also found a lot of gold that had been buried by a group in a cemetery outside Paris.
Fourniret found out about the treasure from someone he was in jail with. He and Olivier found it with the cellmate’s wife, who Fourniret later killed.
The couple used the money to buy a big house near the border of Belgium, and they used it as their main place to work from for many years. Fourniret and Olivier drove around France in a van and picked their victims in areas where other serial killers might have been.
Admitted French serial killer Michel Fourniret walks out of the Police Headquarters in Dinant on 08 July 2004.
This might have been a reason for why the police investigation failed. In Joanna Parrish’s situation, Auxerre was where Emile Louis lived. He was a bus driver who was put in jail in 2004 for killing seven young women.
Fourniret was caught in 2003 after trying to kidnap someone in Belgium. The next year, Olivier admitted things for the first time, and little by little Fourniret started telling the truth, even though it was often unclear and didn’t always make sense. The couple ended their marriage while they were in jail in 2010.
Just like in the 2008 trial, people in Nanterre are very interested in how much responsibility Olivier has. Her lawyer says she has a personality that follows others and did everything to make Fourniret happy. The lawyer says that the murders would not have happened if Olivier was not involved. -

Sierra Leone violence: Violence in Sierra Leone was a botched coup – Minister
Sierra Leone’s government says that the trouble on Sunday was an attempted coup. Armed men attacked buildings in the capital city.
The information minister said that on Sunday, some people with guns tried to take over the government.
The attackers broke into a military base and jails, letting about 2,000 prisoners go free, according to the officials.
At least 19 people, including police and one civilian, were killed in the fighting.
“The incident was a failed try to take over. ” The plan was to secretly overthrow a government that was chosen by the people, said Information Minister Chernoh Bah on Tuesday.
We will try to catch them and make them follow the laws of Sierra Leone. -

Indian tunnel collapse: Operation might continue all night – Official
Retired Lt-Gen Syed Ata Hasnain from the NDMA said that he believes the operation will continue throughout the whole night.
Lt-Gen Hasnain said it will take “at least three to four hours” to rescue all the workers stuck in the tunnel.
He said it will take 3-5 minutes to get each of the 41 people out. Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force will help with the evacuation, and State Disaster Response Force teams will also be there to help.
He said that the paramedics will go inside the tunnel when people are being evacuated. For the last two hours, there has been a flurry of activity outside the tunnel.
The tunnel’s opening is lined with dozens of ambulances. There are also a number of high-ranking officials present.
Chinook helicopters from the Indian Air Force have also been used to remove employees who might require emergency medical attention.
There’s a general air of nervousness and excitement at the location.

Indian tunnel collapse: Rescue mission underway, about 18 pulled out
The first of 41 construction workers who were stuck in a tunnel in northern India has been saved. They got trapped there because of a landslide on 12 November.
They will be taken out one by one using a large pipe that is being put through the rubble of the collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand state.
A person who knows a lot about digging tunnels said that rescuers were able to reach the group at 7:05 PM local time (1:35 PM GMT).
None of the men were hurt.
The rescue is being delayed because they have to cut through metal rods, and it is also taking longer because of loose soil and hard rock.
Officials are giving the men air, food, and water through a small pipe.Rescuers made many plans to save the 41 men who were trapped.
The first thing was to dig into the debris from the tunnel entrance. After many problems, this method has finally made a big discovery today.
Plan B was drilling straight down through the hill above the tunnel. By Monday morning, they had dug 31 meters. The helpers figured out it would take them four days to get to the workers if nothing got in their way.
Alternatively, officials thought about drilling a hole that goes straight across to reach the trapped men, instead of following the main rescue route. Special tools were brought to the place just in case they were needed, but it looks like they won’t be needed after all. -

Grandmother breaks out as she sees relatives she assumed were dead
Yafa Adar, who was kidnapped from Nir Oz kibbutz, was one of the hostages who was released early in the exchange deal. A video of her being taken to Gaza in a small car by armed men became very popular on social media.
Her granddaughter, Adva Ardar, says the 85-year-old coming home was like a dream coming true.
“We waited for 50 days just to hug her and smell her,” she tells BBC Radio 4’s Today show.
”Even after all the hard times, she is still the same funny, positive, and strong woman we know”.
You see her after everything she’s been through, and she’s still the funniest, most hopeful, and strongest woman we’ve ever known.
Adva’s grandmother is really strong and healthy. She’s been talking and asking about what’s been happening in the community.
Yafa thought all her family had died in Nir Oz. But then her grandmother saw them and realized they were actually alive. It was a very emotional moment. Yafa’s oldest grandson, Tamir, who is 38 years old and works as a farmer, is one of the people still being kept as a hostage. He has two young daughters. -

Basic aid reaches northern Gaza; more needed – Charity
The ceasefire has allowed 200 trucks a day to bring aid to Gaza, compared to 45 a day during the war. This information was reported by the Palestine Red Crescent to the media.
Nebal Farsakh, who works for the Red Crescent, told our news-team that they have been able to give supplies to northern Gaza, where there has been a lot of fighting. Before, they were not allowed to give help there.
Farkash thinks the help is only a little bit of help for people in need, but more help is necessary. However, he believes it can still make a difference for the many people in northern Gaza.
”The situation is really bad and we really need help right now.” -

Israeli man who was allegedly held captive by Hamas passed away on October 7 – Family
In the past hour, we received news that one of the men who was believed to have been captured by Hamas on October 7th was actually killed in the attack.
Ravid Katz, who is 51 years old, was not at Kibbutz Nir Oz after he went to fight against Hamas with the security team of the kibbutz, as reported by the Times of Israel.
Yoni Asher, who is the brother-in-law of Katz, posted on social media that he has been told Katz was killed on October 7th. Hamas let go of Asher’s wife and two daughters on Friday as part of the truce deal in Gaza.
Asher said, “Ravid lived in Kibbutz Nir Oz and was a well-educated man from Israel. He was a great father to Shahar, Shira, and a six-month-old baby named Alma, and a partner to Revital. ” We will never forget him. -

Peace can never reign between Israel and Hamas – Former Israeli ambassador
Mark Regev, who used to represent Israel in the UK, says that there can’t be peace with Hamas.
Regev told the media that it is not possible to make peace with Hamas because they have said so themselves. This happened on the News hour programme on Monday evening.
He was probably talking about a statement made earlier this month by Taher El-Nounou, a media advisor for the group Hamas. He told the New York Times that Hamas wants the war with Israel to continue on all the borders and never stop.
“We need to discuss a future without Hamas,” Regev said.
When someone asked if Israel will help rebuild the Gaza Strip, which was badly damaged by Israel’s bombing, Regev said his country’s money is being used to rebuild towns in southern Israel instead.
He said he thinks a lot of other countries will help pay for Gaza to be rebuilt.

Last night, two women and nine children and teenagers were set free. They were all kidnapped from the same kibbutz.
About 170 people are still being held in Gaza, but Hamas claims they are not responsible for all of them. This could make it harder to free the most vulnerable people.

Help reaching Gaza far less than it was prior to the conflict – Authorities
The agreement between Israel and Hamas means that more people being held captive in Gaza will be released, and that more help will be given to the area where people are in urgent need.
The peace agreement has made it possible for some trucks to bring in medicine, food, and water to the area. But it’s still only a small amount compared to the aid that used to come in every day before the war.
Important help is reaching the northern part of Gaza. For weeks, this area was the target of Israel’s attack on Hamas, which caused a lot of damage.
However, people who had to leave their homes say they need more assistance.
“My children are not feeling well, and they don’t have any clothes to wear. ” We arrived wearing light clothes in the summer and didn’t bring any mattresses, food, or anything else. Every day we look for food, but we can’t find any. “Every day, we search for clothes, but we can’t find any,” said a man named Mahmoud in Gaza. “My situation is really bad. ” “My situation is really bad. ” My children are getting sicker every day and it’s making me very sad.

Hamas says it needs more time to gather information and talk to people on the ground.

Think like China and stop disparaging your nation – President of South Africa

Coup leaders in Niger overturn law against transporting migrants
The leaders of a coup in Niger have gotten rid of a law that made it illegal to smuggle migrants in the country.
The law allowed the authorities to stop people who illegally move migrants through the big desert in Niger to Libya and Europe.President Mohamed Bazoum, who was helping the EU stop people from crossing the Mediterranean, was removed from power in July in a coup.
Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani has announced that he is now the leader of the country.
His group in power said they are getting rid of the law because it doesn’t consider what’s best for Niger and its people.
It also said that the convictions given under the 2015 law would be “removed”.
The decision shows that the leaders in Niger’s capital Niamey want to show they are in charge of the country, even though other countries are telling them not to.
The EU stopped working together on security with the landlocked country in West Africa after the coup in the summer.
Josep Borrell, who is in charge of the EU’s foreign policy, decided in July that he also does not recognize Gen Tchiani as the leader, just like the US and France. He also said that money to help Niger with its budget would be stopped for a longtime.
It is still unknown how the European group will react to a big set back in their plan to control the number of people coming from Africa.
In 2015, over a million people who were seeking safety and a better life tried to go to Europe. This made Niger decide to make a new law, but it was later canceled.
The numbers went down a lot as a result. But the people who smuggle things didn’t like it in the years after.
In2019, Bachir Amma told the BBC that if the law changed,he would definitely go back to trafficking people. I used to make as much as $6,000 [£4,700] a week, which is more than I can make now.
He said that because the law is very strict, if someone is caught, they could go to jail for a longtime and their vehicles could be taken away.
People are worried that if the law is removed, trafficking gangs might start moving migrants to countries near Niger like Libya or Algeria, and then to Europe again.
Niger is an important part of an African area called the Sahel. The Sahel is a strip of land that goes from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. -

Israel-Hamas war: Mediators seek to prolong ceasefire period
Mediators sought to extend a four-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas after the final exchange between Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
Israel has offered an additional day of pause in fighting for every 10 Israeli hostages released, and Hamas has said it may agree to an extension.
A Palestinian official said another 20 to 40 hostages could be freed. However, the Qatari Ombudsman said Hamas may not have located them or guaranteed their safety.

“Typically what we see throughout these negotiations is that information is only provided at the time of any agreement or when it happens. But it never indicated anything before.
” In a separate interview with the Financial Times, Sheikh Mohammed said efforts to extend the ceasefire depended on Hamas identifying more than 40 women and children hostages, believed to have been taken by “civilians and gangs” group arrest. He explained that when the current ceasefire was negotiated, Hamas told mediators that it had protected only 50 of the more than 90 women and children Israel identified as hostages. On Sunday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the return of the third group of hostages, saying it was “simply soul-stirring.” “In addition, I would say that there is also a model that shows that an additional 10 [hostages] could be released per day.
That is very welcome,” he added. But he emphasized that at the end of the ceasefire, the Israeli army will”try to achieve its goals with all its might: eliminating Hamas, ensuring that Gaza does not return to the way it was and, of course, liberating all our hostages.
” Hamas also said on Sunday that it wanted to extend the pause. A senior Palestinian official familiar with the Doha talks told the BBC that Hamas had informed mediators of its readiness to extend the ceasefire by two to four days as it could secure further releases. 20 to 40 Israeli hostages.
