  • Here’s why some people would ignore Valentine’s day celebration today

As most people gear up to celebrate Valentine’s day, other people are not interested in celebrating the special day.
Valentine’s day is supposed to be a day where you celebrate your loved ones. Well, some just act like its just a normal day. Have you ever thought of the reasons they don’t celebrate the day?

You’re about to find out as you read on.

Some people believe that couples that have spent a long time together should celebrate many other things. They also believe real love should be celebrated beyond exchanging gifts on just one day of the year.

They’ll say, ‘ why do we need a special day to remind ourselves that we love our partners and that we should do something special to celebrate the love they share? Some find this sentiment relative while some do not.

Some other people believe the celebration has put societal pressure on couples to follow a certain way to show love to their significant other. There’s a lot of pressure around the world today, why add the pressure of being the best partner on Valentine’s day.

This doesn’t promote a healthy relationship.

It is believed that it promotes sexuality amongst people. There’s a societal pressure on new and old couples to have sex on the ‘special day’.

Sex shouldn’t be forced on any relationship, it’s not healthy. Spontaneous affections are way more fun than forced ones.

For most organizations, it’s all about marketing rather than celebrating true love. People spend more money getting gifts from brands that promote Valentine’s day through giveaways and contests.

  • Social media changing GH movie industry – Moesha Boduong

Actress Moesha Boduong, says the Ghanaian movie industry has been changed by the advent of social media.

According to her, social media has taken the industry to another level, making it easier for producers and directors to scout for talent and somewhat relegating known faces.

“Social media has come to change the industry; unlike in previous years where producers could handpick actors because there were just a few people in the business, now everyone is on social media and the directors are spoilt for choice.

“The truth is that now some producers look out for people with huge following on social media, they are looking for influencers and all so the game has changed.

“The tables have turned all thanks to social media. I know not everyone is okay with this change and some of them are now complaining about the industry and how it does not pay etc.,” she told Graphic Showbiz in a recent interview.

Moesha also recounted how unpopular she was until social media came. “When I started acting, no one knew me, but when social media came things changed.

“Now I am also on a level where I do not need to introduce myself. So I tell the young girls that ‘even if it is water you cook, put it there on these platforms’. You may not know who is looking for what and what it might bring,” she said.

Moesha Boduong has starred in movies such as Pool Party, Bloodline, Grey Dawn, Rape Case, Amakye and Dede, John and John and Everyday People. However, her very racy photos on Instagram have brought her even more attention.

  • Former Premier League official Bobby Madley to return to refereeing

Ex-Premier League referee Bobby Madley says he has accepted an opportunity to officiate in England again.

Madley was sacked by Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in 2018 after sending a video mocking a disabled person to a friend.

Following discussions with PGMOL, Madley will return as an official at League One and League Two level from the start of next season.

Madley, 34, says he has also agreed to attend an FA discrimination workshop.

He will also work at grassroots level for the remainder of this season before becoming a National List referee.

In a blog post, Madley wrote: “Eighteen months ago I lost my dream job as a professional football referee due my own regrettable, naive and stupid actions.

“I am delighted, however, that I have been given the opportunity to return to referee in the professional game in England.”

He added: “I am not proud of my actions in 2018 and I have learned from this and feel I am a better and stronger person for it.

“PGMOL dealt with what they considered a discriminatory act in the strongest way. There can be no criticism for that and I have never sought to do anything other than respect the decision and to learn from it as a person.

“I can only thank them for having the ability to forgive, recognise that one naive moment does not define a person and offer me a second chance to do what I love to do.”

Madley took charge of 91 top-flight matches between 2013 and 2018 until he was sacked.

Following his dismissal he moved to Norway where he has refereed in the lower leagues.

  • Henderson is player of the year – Robertson

Andy Robertson believes his Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson deserves to be crowned Premier League player of the year.

The pair have been key to a Liverpool side 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League, with the club – who face Norwich on Saturday, live on Sky Sports – on course to win their first top-division championship since 1990.

Left-back Robertson feels Henderson, who is the club captain at Anfield, has provided vital leadership and key contributions during difficult matches for Jurgen Klopp’s runaway league leaders.

The Scotsman also thinks his skipper is finally starting to get the appreciation he feels his skills have long deserved from the wider footballing public.

“For me, I think he’s the leading candidate [for player of the year],” Robertson told Sky Sports News. “At times this season when we’ve struggled Hendo has been the one that has driven us forward.

“He’s the one who has made sure we don’t get slack, or he has chipped in with some really important goals or really important assists.

“Maybe his performances at the start of the season went a little bit under the radar, but as the season has progressed he’s not really had a bad game.

“You really appreciate him when you train with him every day and in this country he’s not been appreciated enough in his character.

“He’s getting the recognition he deserves because he is a fantastic player, a fantastic role model and a fantastic captain. He’s driven us to three points at times this season when we’ve struggled.”

Robertson also spoke about the support he gives to the Fans Supporting Foodbanks charity, something he wishes he did not have to do.

  • Government cannot fix SA’s economy on its own – Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has admitted that government will not be able to fix South Africa’s economic woes on its own.

This comes as the country faces possible downgrades due to low economic growth, a growing debt burden and upward revision of the fiscal deficit.

In November last year, ratings agency Moody’s maintained its investment-grade rating on South Africa, but changed the country’s sovereign credit rating outlook from stable to negative.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday evening in Parliament, Ramaphosa said the country needed to be frank and admit that the government could not solve the country’s economic challenges alone.

“Even if we were to marshal every single resource at our disposal, and engage on a huge expenditure of public funds, we would not alone be able to guarantee employment to the millions of people who are out of work,” he said.

Ramaphosa said that, through the Jobs Summit, the government had brought labour, business and communities together to find solutions to the unemployment crisis. He added that all stakeholders would continue to meet at the beginning of every month to remove blockages and drive interventions that would save and create jobs.

    Procurement of emergency power

Addressing Eskom, he said government would start the procurement of emergency power from projects that could deliver electricity into the grid within three to 12 months from approval. He added that municipalities would be able to procure their own power from independent power producers, to much applause from the DA MPs.

Last year, the DA in the City of Cape Town went to the courts to seek permission to buy electricity directly from independent power producers (IPPs), due to the ongoing blackouts in the country.

Acting Mayor Ian Neilson told News24 earlier that the City was seeking permission from the judge president of the Gauteng High Court for an expedited hearing on its energy case, asking the Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) to allow it to buy energy from the IPPs.

Ramaphosa also promised to modernise the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (Prasa) rail network by investing R1.4bn in the central line in the Western Cape and the Mabopane line in Pretoria.

He skimmed through intervention measures for the beleaguered South African Airways (SAA) which was placed under business rescue, only saying that the business rescue practitioners were expected to unveil their plans for restructuring the airline in the next few weeks.

On education, he said government would build nine TVET college campuses in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape and a new science and technology university in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Another great leap for the Department of Education would be the introduction of two new subjects, coding and robotics, he said. These two subjects would be introduced to 200 primary schools, becoming fully implemented in 2022.

  • Rakitic keen to play with Ronaldo but declares Messi best of all time

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic admits he would like to play with Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as doubts remain over his future at Camp Nou.

Rakitic was heavily linked to Serie A duo Juventus and Inter before the transfer window closed, while Premier League giants Manchester United were also reportedly interested.

It came as Rakitic was reportedly offered to Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain as part of a deal to prise Neymar back to Camp Nou at the start of the season.

Rakitic continues to be linked with Italian champions Juve and when asked if he would like to play alongside five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, the 31-year-old told Bleacher Report Football he’s very much open to the prospect.

“Of course I would. He is also one of the greatest players in history,” Rakitic replied. “You enjoy watching him play and he’s doing well at Juventus.”

Rakitic is currently team-mates with Barca captain and six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, who he declared is the greatest of all time.

“It’s amazing to play with him – he’s special. There have been great players in every era, but I’m sure he’s been the best in the last 15 years,” Rakitic said.

“In my opinion, I think he’s the best of all time. Being with him for six years has been incredible.”

Rakitic previously vented his frustration with how head coach Ernesto Valverde and his staff were treated upon their sacking in January, admitting he considered leaving Barcelona.

“It’s a part of football,” Rakitic said. “You have to understand that and be ready [to potentially leave] in January.

“You have to be happy, you have to think about your family, and if I play for Barcelona I am happy.”

The Croatia star was also asked to weigh in on the future of Neymar and admitted he’d welcome the Brazilian back to Camp Nou with open arms.

“First of all I would like to have Neymar in my team for sure, he needs to decide what’s best for him as he’s my big friend,” he said.

“I want to see him happy and for sure when he is happy he is one of the best players in the world.”

  • Harmattan: Be extra careful when driving Road Safety Authority

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has called on drivers to be extra careful while driving especially during this harmattan period.

The NRSA noted that the harmattan season often creates visibility challenges for motorists especially at dawn and after sunset and, therefore, driving in these conditions is considered “hazardous to road users and requires a lot of tact and good judgment.”

    To this end, the Authority has cautioned that drivers adapt their driving to the changing weather condition by observing the following;

    1. Use low beam headlights

    2. Leave a reasonable distance between you and other vehicles

    3. Exercise patience

    4. Keep your windows and mirrors clean

    5. Avoid high speeds

    6. Avoid unnecessary overtaking and

    7. Carry your Double-Function Advance warning triangles and place them at a distance of not less than 45meters, where necessary.

Pedestrian road users who exercise by walking and jogging have also been advised to wear reflective clothing to improve their visibility in order to reduce their risk of being knocked down.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has said the recent harmattan being experienced across the country will continue till Sunday, 16 February 2020.

In a statement, the agency said the atmosphere will remain dry and hazy with a drastic reduction in visibility of not less than 1 km to a little above 3 km.

  • ‘Ighalo isolation part of Manchester United plan’

Odion Ighalo’s confinement from Manchester United’s training ground is just precautionary and has always been the plan, says Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper.

A report in the Daily Mirror on Wednesday evening claimed Ighalo, who joined United in a Deadline Day move from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, was banned from the club’s AON Training Complex in Carrington amid fears over spreading the coronavirus.

The 30-year-old has not tested positive for the virus and, as part of the government’s precautionary procedures, has been put on a two-week incubation period ending this weekend – and coinciding with United’s return to the UK from their warm-weather training camp in Marbella, which Ighalo had missed over similar concerns.

The Nigeria striker has been training in Manchester’s Taekwondo Centre on the Etihad Campus and will be part of United’s travelling party when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday Night Football, live on Sky Sports.

“I think there’s been a lot of hysteria quite naturally surrounding the coronavirus, but what Manchester United have done is precautionary, and certainly from their point of view it far exceeds the government guidelines on treating somebody or working with somebody that’s come from China,” Cooper told Sky Sports News.

“When Ighalo was signed on Deadline Day he arrived from China but not from the Wuhan province, a lot of people coming from China were done by the same stipulation that they might come from the Wuhan province, and of course he’s on a 14-day incubation period.

“Manchester United quite naturally felt it was right and wise for him to train away from Carrington. There are a lot of reasons for that, clearly there’s a risk of infection, apparently very minor, and it’s an elite training base.

“You wouldn’t want that to happen because thereby you’d have another 14-day incubation problem and Manchester United wouldn’t be able to play football games.

“There’s also the matter, of course, that United are out in Spain at the moment on their winter break training camp with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. What’s been happening is Odion Ighalo has been working in Manchester city centre with a personal trainer, in contact of course with the training staff that Solskjaer has with him in Spain.

“They’ve just been going through that with the expressed intention of getting him fit for the game against Chelsea, which I think he’ll be a part of. I don’t think he’ll be in Solskjaer’s starting 11, but I think he might well be on the bench, somebody that Ole could use on Monday evening at Stamford Bridge as substitute.

“There’s a fear that he hasn’t been integrated in terms of the personnel but I think they have worked on his fitness and this is all precautionary, he’s stayed away from the training ground, and once the two-week incubation period is over – which of course coincides with this weekend and the return of Manchester United from Spain – then he’ll be able to integrate with the team, go down to London and be part of that first-team squad.

“Manchester United certainly think that they have far exceeded the government on this, but they are working sensibly and practicably in this situation where of course you’re looking at a league training centre and you don’t want any risk of infection. Odion Ighalo has been doing his fitness work in Manchester on his own and that has been the plan all along.”

  • Col Gershon Akpa could be freed in coup case

A senior state attorney, Hilda Graig, in a case between the state and 10 persons, who have been accused of planning to destabilize the country, has hinted of freeing one of the accused, Colonel Gershon Akpa.

Presenting her affidavit in opposition for a bail application for seven of the accused persons, Hilda Graig said evidence gathered so far does not implicate Colonel Gershon Akpa and the Attorney General has subsequently been advised.

In her argument, she told the court the bail of indictment for nine of the accused persons is ready and the committal process would be initiated in the next sitting for trial to commence.

She argued for the court to refuse the seven accused persons’ bail on the basis that they will interfere with evidence and considering the nature of the case, they will not avail themselves to stand trial.

She refuted the claim of the lawyer of the applicants that no evidence has been presented against the accused persons, adding that they have all been shown the evidence and are aware of what is going to be used against them.

Lawyer for the applicants Victor Kojoga Adawudu, in his application for bail, argued that the accused persons are of the conviction that they are innocent and are ready to prove that to the court so they will not run away from trial.

He told the court in their earlier bail application that the prosecution be asked to furnish the accused persons with the summary of the evidence, failure to do so his side will repeat process.

In her ruling, Justice Ruby Quayson considering the arguments from both sides, refused the applicants bail indicating that it is likely they will not stand trial and also the fact that prosecution will commence trial on Thursday, February 20.

This is the third time the accused persons have been denied bail.

  • Akua Donkor in court over fraud

Madam Akua Donkor, a former presidential aspirant of the Ghana Freedom Party, accused of fraudulently selling a family property, was on Thursday granted bail in the sum of GHC12,000.00 by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Court.

Madam Donkor, also a farmer, allegedly sold a 33-acre parcel of land, belonging to her family, at the cost of GH?10,500.00 to one Faustina Yeboah, the complainant in the case, but refused to pay back the money when complainant found out the property does not belong to her.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge and would make her next appearance before the Court presided over by Miss Mary Nsenkyire on March 10, 2020.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Timothy Amoako, told the Court that the complainant is a trader, living in Kumasi.

He said during the year 2009, complainant and her younger brother, one Kwabena Appiah Nuamah, who lives in the United Kingdom, approached Madam Donkor at Ajuratia near Kumasi and negotiated with her for the purchase of the said parcel of land to be used for farming purposes.

Madam Donkor subsequently apportioned 33 acres of land to the complainant and her brother and an amount GHC10,500.00 was paid to her.

The Prosecution said Madam Donkor then prepared an indenture on the purchased land and handed it over to the complainant and her brother.

Mr Amoako said the complainant and her father, one Kofi Appiah Nuamah, a witness in the case cleared a portion of the land and cultivated crops such as cocoa, plantains, cassava and maize.

Prosecution said, barely a year after, some people who claimed to be relatives of the accused started harassing the complainant and her father any time they go to worked on the land.

He said the relatives ordered the complainant to clear off from the land and since that parcel of land was their family property and Madam Donkor did not have any right to sell it.

The Prosecution said the complainant reported to Madam Donkor, who told her to ignore her relatives and continue working on the land.

Chief Inspector Amoako said, at a certain stage, the harassment and threatening from the relatives heightened so Akua Donkor reported their conduct to the Kumasi Central Police Station and some of her (relatives), were arrested.

He said the Police forwarded the case to Court but the relatives were advised to resort to civil action which they did, and a verdict was pronounced against the accused.

The Prosecution said Madam Donkor, after the court action, promised to refund the amount involved to the complainants but later refused to do so and resorted to playing hide and seek with complainant.

He said the complainant then lodged a complaint to the police and Madam Donkor was arrested.

The Prosecution said after police investigations, the accused was charged with the offence and brought before the Court.

This became necessary after the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) banned both advertisement and Live Presenter Mention (LPM) of alcoholic beverages, and also Ghanaian celebs from endorsing alcohol.

The FDA argued that the ban was imposed to protect kids from getting addicted to alcohol at a tender age.

In the video herein, one could see Ini Edo, Jim Iyke, Igwe 2 Pac and Victor AD happily enjoying the drink whiles saying good things about the product.

  • Lawrence Ray: US student’s dad charged for sex trafficking

A man accused of abusing his daughter’s university roommates has been arrested in the US and charged with extortion, sex trafficking and forced labour.

Prosecutors say Lawrence “Larry” Ray extorted some $1m (£771,000) from students at New York’s Sarah Lawrence College, abusing them “emotionally, physically, and sexually”.

The charges were prompted by a story in New York magazine, which detailed the alleged workings of Mr Ray’s “cult”.

Mr Ray, 60, has denied the allegations.

He was arrested on Tuesday in the state of New Jersey.

“For the better part of the last decade, we allege there was no limit to the abuse Ray’s victims received, and there is no way of knowing the amount of damage he may have caused them in the years to come,” said FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney.

    What are the accusations?

According to New York magazine, the abuse started when Mr Ray showed up at his daughter’s university in 2010, after being released from prison, where he had been serving time on charges related to a custody dispute.

The publication said his daughter described him to friends as a “truth-teller” who had been unjustly imprisoned. A former FBI informant, Mr Ray had been a close associate of former New York police chief Bernard Kerik. The pair fell out and Mr Ray cooperated with authorities in a high-profile corruption case against Kerik.

Mr Ray moved into his daughter’s dormitory, where prosecutors say he presented himself as a father-figure and began conducting “therapy” sessions.

During the sessions, he allegedly learned intimate details about the students’ private lives and mental health struggles. He alienated several of them from their parents, persuading some to move into a Manhattan apartment and convincing them that they were “broken” and needed his help.

After gaining their trust, prosecutors say Mr Ray subjected his victims to interrogation sessions in which he falsely accused them of harming him by attempting to poison him or damage his property. He allegedly demanded confessions, using tactics including sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation and physical violence.

On one occasion, after accusing a male victim of damaging his property, Mr Ray brandished a knife and threatened to dismember the victim with it, forcing a false confession, the indictment says.

He is accused of using the false confessions to extort money, which the victims attempted to pay by draining their parents’ savings and opening credit lines, among other means. Authorities say he collected more than $500,000 from one woman after forcing her into prostitution, while several were forced to perform unpaid labour.

In total, he is accused of extorting about $1m from at least five victims.

Authorities say he laundered the proceeds of his crimes through an internet domain business.

Manhattan US Attorney Geoffrey Berman said: “College is supposed to be a time of self-discovery and new-found independence. But as alleged, Lawrence Ray exploited that vulnerable time in his victims’ lives through a course of conduct that shocks the conscience”.

Mr Ray has denied the charges, claiming they are the result of a conspiracy against him.

In a statement reported by US media, Sarah Lawrence College described the charges as “serious, wide-ranging, disturbing, and upsetting”.

It said it launched an internal investigation after the New York magazine story was published, which it said “did not substantiate those specific claims”.

  • Coronavirus: Will someone develop a vaccine?

While the world worries about the spread of the deadly coronavirus, now known as Covid-19, one would expect the major pharmaceutical firms to make millions, even billions, by rushing to develop a vaccine.

But in reality, this is not the case. While the global vaccine market is expected to grow to $60bn (£46bn) this year, big profits are not guaranteed.

”Successfully developing a preventive vaccine or treatment for a public health crisis is difficult. It typically takes a lot of time and money,” says US-based Brad Loncar, a biotechnology investor and chief executive of Loncar Investments.

“There is typically little money in it for companies that do successfully develop something, not the billions that some investors mistakenly expect.”

The global vaccines industry is dominated by big players such as Pfizer, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Sanofi, and Johnson & Johnson.

Worldwide sales of vaccines totalled $54bn last year, and have almost doubled since 2014, according to data analysts Statista. Driving this growth is the increase of infectious diseases like influenza, swine flu, hepatitis and Ebola.

“One would think that the industry has the reserves to jump at this challenge. But none of the four top vaccine companies has shown significant interest,” says Dr Ellen ‘t Hoen, director at medicines law and policy at University Medical Center Groningen in Amsterdam.

Outside of the big firms, there are a handful of smaller pharma companies pushing to find a vaccine for the deadly Covid-19 outbreak, which has already claimed more than 1,000 lives.

Gilead, a US biotech business that makes anti-HIV drugs, has announced it will trial its drug Remdesivir. Meanwhile Kaletra, a combination of two anti-HIV drugs from pharma group AbbVie is being trialled on patients in China. Both trials are based on existing medicines.

“A large company like Gilead or AbbVie will be able to use an existing medicine against this as a therapeutic treatment, but it’s unlikely to be much of a needle mover from a stock market perspective for a large company like that,” adds Mr Loncar.

For Covid-19, charitable donations are being used to spark pharma companies into action to find a vaccine. One of the leading players is a not-for-profit organisation called the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

CEPI co-founders include the governments of Norway and India, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust. CEPI is supporting vaccine development programmes by Inovio Pharmaceuticals and Moderna.

Among the big pharma companies, GSK has agreed to make its technology available to the CEPI to help it create a medicine against Covid-19.

Vaccines often require lengthy testing on thousands of people before they are allowed to be sold. But in 2002 and 2003, the Sars outbreak came and went before a vaccine could be produced. In fact, there is still no protective vaccine for Sars available.

Regarding Ebola, the first vaccine was produced by Merck, and successfully deployed in Guinea, west Africa, in 2015. At the time it was an unlicensed drug, yet it was rolled out in the country for “compassionate use” after the authorisation of the Guinean government. Merck’s vaccine was not given regulatory approval in the US until last year.

Another Ebola vaccine by Johnson & Johnson was made available from 2019 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ronald Klain served as the US Ebola response coordinator in 2014-15. “I don’t work for the companies, I’m not like a drug company fan,” Mr Klain told a panel last week hosted by not-for-profit think-tank Aspen Institute, “but there’s no question that a lot of them lost a lot of money trying to produce an Ebola vaccine.”

A key reason why vaccines often have to wait years before they are given regulatory approval is the potential for side effects. These can also happen even when a drug has been approved.

During the 2009-10 swine flu pandemic, six million people were given the Pandemrix vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline. However, it was subsequently withdrawn from sale after it was discovered to cause narcolepsy in some people. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes people to fall asleep numerous times a day.

Also speaking at last week’s Aspen Institute event, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said no major pharmaceutical company has come forward to say it would manufacture a vaccine for Covid-19. He called it “very difficult and very frustrating”.

“Companies that have the skill to be able to do it are not going to just sit around and have a warm facility, ready to go for when you need it,” Dr Fauci said.

Dr Fauci added that it would be at least one year before a Covid-19 vaccine would be available. That timeline assumes a large pharma manufacturer steps up to help make the product. The World Health Organization (WHO) hopes a vaccine will be ready within 18 months.

Pharma companies have responded to previous public health crises by developing vaccines, only to have those crises fade, and to be left with significant research and development costs. “When we were doing this with Ebola, it was a major vaccine company that got burned who’s now pulling out of that,” says Dr Fauci. “It is going to be a challenge to be able to get a major company to do that.”

Mr Loncar sums up the mentality of the big pharma firms when he said “most companies and investors are not in these things for the long haul”.

  • Cabinet reshuffle: Julian Smith and Andrea Leadsom out

Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith and Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom are the first casualties as Boris Johnson begins a cabinet reshuffle.

Mr Smith was the first senior minister to be sacked – he was in his cabinet role for 204 days.

Esther McVey is also out as housing minister as the prime minister re-jigs his top team.

Most of the cabinet were appointed when Mr Johnson became prime minister in July.

Arlene Foster, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, paid tribute to Mr Smith following his sacking, saying his dedication to the role had been “incredible”.

She tweeted: “Spoke with JulianSmithUK a short time ago to thank him for his help in getting devolution restored. We may not have always agreed (we did sometimes) but his dedication to the role was incredible. Best wishes to him and his family. Always welcome in Fermanagh.”

The prime minister left his cabinet largely untouched following his party’s decisive election victory in December, pending what sources suggested at the time would be a more significant overhaul after the UK left the EU on 31 January.

A Downing Street source told the BBC the PM would “reward those MPs who have worked hard to deliver on this government’s priorities to level up the whole country and deliver the change people voted for last year”.

Senior figures such as Chancellor Sajid Javid, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and Home Secretary Priti Patel are not expected to be moved, but others are considered more vulnerable.

Mr Johnson is expected to make changes at junior ministerial level – namely parliamentary under-secretaries of state – that could see a 50/50 gender balance in a push to promote female talent.

There is also a plan to make at least 60% of parliamentary private secretaries women by the summer – compared with just 18% at the moment.

  • Bryan Acheampong’s reshuffle is just a move to rig the elections – Asiedu Nketia

General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said that the transfer of Former National Security Minister, Bryan Acheampong to the Interior Ministry is just a move to rig the upcoming elections come December 2020.

According to him, his reshuffle has given him the legitimate authority to deploy vigilante forces they have trained in the police service during the elections.

These actions he says justify their notion that Akufo-Addo is not ready to ensure that the upcoming elections is free and fair.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanaweb, the General Secretary said, “I believe that it is a cork in the whole orchestration to rig the elections because this is somebody who deployed task force to create mayhem at a by-election for which reason a commission was established, a commission came to declare that action unlawful and they recommended that the group should be disbanded, he himself should be punished and so on. One of the reasons of the recommendation is that the National Security had no role to play in election security.”

He added that Akufo-Addo has disregarded that Emile Short Commission which made recommendations about punishments for his role in the Ayawaso West Wougon by-election Mayhem.

“So now what Akufo-Addo has done is to tell the Emile Short Commission to go to hell to tell anybody who is worried about vigilantism and so on to go to hell and through this action is going to legitimize of Bryan Acheampong and give him the legitimate authority now to deploy the task force they have trained and embedded in the police service to now go and be deployed for elections security and you know what it means. If you have vigilante of one party that is contesting election being the one that are going to be deployed in the uniforms of Ghana Police service to go and take charge of election security it tells you that the president is not minded to go into any fair elections.” He said

Nana Akufo-Addo has reassigned two ministers according to a statement from the presidency signed by Eugene Arhin.

The first is Bryan Acheampong who is the Minister of State at the Ministry of National Security. He has been reassigned and is now the Minister of State at the Ministry of Interior.

Henry Quartey, current Deputy Minister for Interior is now the Deputy Minister at the Ministry of National Security.

Reasons for their reassignment were not provided. Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has assured that he will do his best to maintain the democratic credentials of the country and work to promote free and fair elections in the 2020 polls.

  • Cannabis oil products could be off the shelves in a year

Oils, snacks and drinks containing the cannabis extract cannabidiol (CBD) will be “taken off the shelves” next year if they do not gain regulatory approval.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said products had to be registered by March 2021 or they would be pulled.

Despite rising sales of CBD goods, not one product has been approved in the UK yet, raising safety concerns.

The FSA has also issued new advice on CBD use, saying it should not be used alongside other medication.

Cannabidiol is derived from cannabis but does not have any psychoactive properties. It is sold in some pharmacies and health food shops as a supplement and used to treat conditions such as pain or insomnia.

However, the FSA only began regulating the market in January last year and some argue it has dragged its feet.

Trials have found CBD products on sale that contain unlisted and potentially hazardous ingredients, or illegal levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Many may contain little or none of the extract itself, contrary to their marketing claims and despite their high prices.

The FSA said producers had been slow to submit their products for approval, forcing it to impose the deadline.

“The CBD industry must provide more information about the safety and contents of these products to the regulator by March 2021, or the products will be taken off the shelves,” boss Emily Miles said.

  • Labour calls for clarity over claims businessman paid for PM’s £15,000 holiday

Labour has called on Boris Johnson to clarify who paid for his Caribbean holiday over the New Year.

According to the MPs’ register of interests, the accommodation – which cost £15,000 – was covered by David Ross, the co-founder of Carphone Warehouse.

But a spokesman for Mr Ross has told the Daily Mail he did not pay for the stay and only helped to arrange it.

Downing Street said the trip had been properly registered.

The register also shows earnings Mr Johnson received last year before becoming PM, including more than £327,000 for seven speaking engagements, one of which was a three-hour speech where he was paid £122,899.74.

The prime minister took the holiday to St Vincent and the Grenadines with girlfriend Carrie Symonds between Boxing Day 2019 and 5 January 2020.

Labour’s shadow minister for the cabinet office, Jon Trickett, said Mr Johnson “must come clean” about the holiday accommodation, adding that if he does not, Parliament’s standards watchdog “should step in”.

“The public deserves to know who is paying for their prime minister’s jaunts,” Mr Trickett added.

The entry in Mr Johnson’s register of interests says Mr Ross donated accommodation “for a private holiday for my partner and me, value £15,000”.

But a spokesman of Mr Ross told the Daily Mail: “Boris wanted some help to find somewhere in Mustique, David called the company who run all the villas and somebody had dropped out.

“So Boris got the use of a villa that was worth £15,000, but David Ross did not pay any monies whatsoever for this.”

Mr Ross was one of Mr Johnson’s aides in City Hall and was appointed to the Olympics organising committee.

But he resigned from the roles, and his company, over a share scandal in 2008.

It emerged Mr Ross had used millions of pounds worth of Carphone Warehouse shares as collateral against personal loans without informing the company’s other directors – a potential breach of City rules at the time.

Mr Ross has been a long-standing donor to the Conservative Party, pledging £250,000 in the last election campaign.

A Downing Street spokesperson said: “All transparency requirements have been followed, as set out in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests”.

Mr Johnson faced criticism over his holiday for not returning sooner, after the US killing of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani raised tensions in the Middle East.

It is the first trip abroad that Mr Johnson has declared since going to Saudi Arabia in September 2018.

Only one other MP has declared a free holiday in the last year.

Mr Johnson also declared payments he had received prior to becoming prime minister, including book royalties and hundreds of thousands of pounds for speaking engagements.

In the first six months of 2019, Mr Johnson earned more than £327,000 for the seven speaking engagements, which lasted a total of 17.5 hours.

He was also paid £22,916.66 a month for his column in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, which was published weekly.

  • US investigates Harvard and Yale over foreign funding

The US has launched investigations into Harvard and Yale universities over suspicions they received undisclosed funds from foreign countries, including Saudi Arabia and China.

The US Department of Education said the elite schools did not fully report hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign gifts and contracts.

Harvard and Yale told the BBC they were preparing responses for the government.

It comes amid a clamp down on foreign funding to academic institutions.

Under US law, universities are required to report all gifts and contracts from foreign sources that exceed $250,000 (£193,000).

Since July, the Department of Education said it had uncovered some $6.6bn in previously unreported gifts from countries including Qatar, China, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It said this figure could be “significantly underestimated”.

Officials have previously described foreign spending on US universities as a “black hole” and warned that such money can come with strings attached.

“This is about transparency. If colleges and universities are accepting foreign money and gifts, their students, donors, and taxpayers deserve to know how much and from whom,” said US Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

“Unfortunately, the more we dig, the more we find that too many are underreporting or not reporting at all,” she said.

What are Harvard and Yale accused of?

The Department of Education said Yale University had chosen not to report any foreign funding over the last four years, and is suspected of failing to disclose at least $375m in foreign gifts and contracts.

The agency said it was also concerned that Harvard lacked “appropriate institutional controls over foreign money” and had failed to fully report foreign gifts and contracts.

Earlier this month, the chairman of Harvard’s chemistry department and two Chinese researchers were charged with making false statements about ties to the Chinese government.

In letters to the Ivy League universities, the Department of Education called on them to supply the names and addresses of foreign sources involved in contracts and gifts, as well as the activities supported by the funding since August 2013.

Harvard was asked to disclose records involving the governments of China, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iran, as well as companies including Chinese technology giant Huawei.

Officials called on Yale to disclose similar information about foreign contributions.

Yale did not comment on the allegation that it had failed to report $375m in foreign gifts and contracts, but told the BBC it was preparing a response to the government’s letter. Harvard said it was also preparing a response.

  • Govt to pay MPs Common Fund after Minority threatens to boycott State of the Nation Address

The Finance Ministry says they are in the process of paying MPs share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.

Deputy Minister for Finance Abena Osei Asare said all arrears for the third quarter of the Common Fund have been paid and the Ministry is in the process of paying MPs their share of the fund.

The Minority yesterday threatened to boycott next week’s State of the Nation Address over the nonpayment of MP’s share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.

The Minority also gave the government 48 hours to release the MP’s share of the Common Fund for the third quarter of 2019.

According to them, failure to do this will warrant a total boycott of the State of the Nation Address by the President next week Thursday.

MP for Bodi Constituency, Sampson Ahi speaking after a Minority Caucus meeting said the action by government is deliberate.

He added that these are the funds that the MPs used to work effectively at their various constituencies.

“We have realised that the government has taken decision to deprive Members of Parliament of working effectively in our various constituencies, we are saying this because close to two months ago the government released the Common Fund to the district assemblies as we speak we don’t know when they are going to release the MP’s share for the fund. We see to it to be a deliberate attempt on the part of government to deprive us, being election year the time that they will release the monies we will get resources to work and that is why they have taken that decision to deprive us of our resources to work, we are giving them up to Friday if we don’t hear anything realistic we will consider boycotting the State of the Nation Address…..’

But responding to the demand of the Minority, Abena Osei Asare said they are in the process of paying the MPs their share of the Common Fund.

“…..and then the MPs also get their portion, as i speak to you and you can find out from the district assemblies, the third quarter funds have been paid to them and we are working to also get MPs their share of the Common Fund, as far as I know, it’s the district assemblies fund and there is a component for the MPs…….so we are in the process of issuing that of the MPs too.

  • GUTA to trade in UK after Coronavirus scare halts Ghana-China trade

The Leadership of the Greater Accra branch of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) says it has finalised discussions with the British High Commission Department of International Trade to ensure members have easy access to goods for the Ghanaian market.

A statement signed by the Regional Secretary, Nana Opoku to that effect said, this is due to the inability of their members to trade from China, a situation that has resulted in a shortage of some products.

The statement further asked interested members to contact the Greater Accra office to receive help with the necessary documentation to enable them to travel to the United Kingdom to purchase the goods.

  • Kobe Bryant’s widow ‘refusing to accept’ deaths of husband, daughter

Kobe Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, says her “brain refuses to accept” the deaths of her husband and their daughter, Gianna.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Bryant, 41, and 13-year-old ‘Gigi’ were among nine people to die in a helicopter crash in California in January.

Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, played for the Lakers throughout his career and is considered one of the greatest players in the game’s history.

“I’ve been reluctant to put my feelings into words,” said Vanessa Bryant.

Writing on Instagram, Vanessa – who had three other daughters with Bryant – added: “My brain refuses to accept that both Kobe and Gigi are gone. I can’t process both at the same time. It’s like I’m trying to process Kobe being gone but my body refuses to accept my Gigi will never come back to me. It feels wrong.

“Why should I be able to wake up another day when my baby girl isn’t being able to have that opportunity?! I’m so mad. She had so much life to live.

“Then I realize I need to be strong and be here for my three daughters. Mad I’m not with Kobe and Gigi but thankful I’m here with Natalia, Bianka and Capri.”

Vanessa previously announced a “celebration of life” for Bryant and Gianna will take place at the Staples Center, the home of the LA Lakers, on 24 February.

Last week, Gianna’s school retired her number two basketball jersey in a special ceremony.

“I know what I’m feeling is normal,” added Vanessa. “It’s part of the grieving process. I just wanted to share in case there’s anyone out there that’s experienced a loss like this.

“God I wish they were here and this nightmare would be over. Praying for all of the victims of this horrible tragedy. Please continue to pray for all.”

  • Emmanuel Clottey backs new Great Olympics coach to turn things around

Great Olympics skipper Emmanuel Clottey has backed interim coach Seth Hoffman to turn things around after head coach Prince Kwoffie left the club following a poor start to the 2019/20 season.

Coach Kwoffie parted ways with the club after their 1-0 defeat to WAFA on match day seven, leaving Seth Hoffman to lead the team.

The interim coach has been in charge of only two matches, winning one and losing the other.

He guided the team to beat struggling King Faisal 4-3 and suffered a home defeat to Eleven Wonders.

“I think Hoffman is a very good coach and he will help us. I get this feeling when I look at his training sessions and I believe he will help us,” said Clottey.

“He has had to take over as head coach and so, we will need time to understand his way of playing the game but we cannot take all the time to do that.

“We are comfortable with him and we know what he can do and so, we need to take our training sessions seriously and we will see how things go.”

  • Legon Cities coach Goran Barjaktarevic not under pressure despite poor run of results

Legon Cities FC coach Goran Barkjaktarevic says he doesn’t feel any pressure despite the poor run of results in the on-going Ghana Premier League.

Cities are currently 15th on the league table after nine round of matches played so far with 10 points, just a place and one point above the relegation zone.

They’ve won two, drawn four and lost three games in the process.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, coach Barjaktarevic says he doesn’t feel any pressure despite sack rumours.

“How many fans do we have?,” he quizzed after he was told fans are dissatisfied of their performance. “I mean we are a new club and I’m not sure we have that kind of fan bases who can judge something like that.

“I think those people who are talking are prepared by some kind of people and I as a coach, my expertise is judged by the best people in Germany.

“Those people who think they can judge me as not qualified for this, I have read from social media that I ma coming here to get the possibility to make my A license and this expert that wrote this that I made my A license in 2000, and I made my professional licence in 2005 so I didn’t come here to make my A license or make profit. I came to work football,” he reacted angrily.

“I mean all these people, I am an open person, all these people can come to me if they have questions and I can guarantee you it’s not from our fans.

“Someone prepare them say things like that. I am responsible to my board.

“I don’t feel any pressure, I am like a fish in the water. This business for me is like a fish in the water. What pressure.”

  • Lagos-bound flights divert to Accra over poor visibility caused by harmattan

A number of international flights heading to the Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos, Nigeria, have been diverted to the Kotoka International Airport over poor visibility caused by harmattan.

In an interview with Citi Business News, Edward Baah, Director, Air Traffic Services at Kotoka, said since the night of February 11, 2020, a number of Lagos-bound flights have sought refuge at Kotoka pending clarity in the weather condition which is said to be poor particularly in the Benin airspace heading to Lagos.

He mentioned that more than five flights including two belonging to Emirates, one from Rwandair, British Airways and Qatar Airlines, have all had to stop over in Accra.

The diversion has led to unusual long passenger queues at Kotoka International Airports leading to health inspection and immigration services.

“The size of aircraft that are diverting are wide-bodied that can carry about 400 passengers, so obviously they will create a lot of pressure at the immigration and the arrival hall,” Mr. Baah sated.

According to him, the respective airlines have made arrangements to accommodate their passengers until visibility improves.

Mr. Baah said they expect more flights to make a detour to Accra, but he cautioned that there is a limit to how much flights Accra can accommodate and that when the limit is reached, other diverted flights would have to seek refuge elsewhere.
