  • Sammy Gyamfi reveals why he rejected NPP for NDC

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi says he chose the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) because the umbrella family is not discriminatory.

According to him, he never liked the NPP while growing because they loved to undermine and discriminate which is their way of politicking.

He mentioned that while at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) as a fresh student, he tried to weigh both sides of the political divide and realized the New Patriotic Party(NPP) was discriminatory and never allowed for people without “big name” backing the opportunity to excel.

Speaking on Accra-Based Neat Fm monitored by MyNewsGh.com, he indicated that after reading about the NDC and the fact that the party was welcoming made him choose to be a member of that party and has never regretted his decision to join the NDC.

He argued if he was a member of the NPP, he will never have risen as fast as he has because the NPP does not give the opportunity to the youth to explore and display their innate abilities.

  • When Gideon Boako and John Jinapor met head-on with facts and figures on the economy

Saturday’s edition of the Newsfile news analysis programme on Joy FM turned into a battle of ideas, facts and figures between Dr Gideon Boako, an aide to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Mr John Jinapor, an aide to former Vice President and President John Dramani Mahama.

The debate followed last Tuesday’s presentation by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, where he told Ghanaians that the Akufo-Addo administration has kept faith with Ghanaians, with all indications pointing to a Ghana on the rise.

With about 10 months left for the government to end its four-year mandate, the Vice-President said the NPP administration had delivered on 78 per cent of the 388 promises it made during the 2016 electioneering.

There has been some public suggestions that when Dr Bawumia speaks on the economy, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) finds it difficult finding someone of his caliber to respond.

A day after Dr Bawumia’s presention, Mr John Jinapor, a former aide to Mr John Dramani Mahama when he was Vice President and later promoted to the position of Deputy Minister of Power also made a presentation at a dialogue session organised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) where he claimed the NPP administration had performed poorly in the energy sector and was mismanaging resources in that area.

So when Dr Gideon Boako and Mr John Jinapor, currently the Member of Parliament for Yapei/Kasawugu in the Northern Region met on the weekend news analysis programme, it was the public’s expectation of an opportunity to checkmate each other on facts and figures.

Earlier, a member of the NDC and former Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, Mr Bernard Allotey Jacobs had indicated that, the NDC had to be strategic such that when Dr Bawumia speaks on the economy, the party should not just release “mere communicators” to respond but should release people of same “pedigree” to respond.

Saturday’s edition of the Newsfile programme certainly lived up to the bill as a political battle between aides of Vice Presidents.

Some reactions on social media indicated that the show ended with Dr Gideon Boako making mince of John Jinapor but there were those who also disagreed and concluded Mr Jinapor punched holes in the Vice President’s presentation.

John Jinapor who was the former deputy minister in the erstwhile President John Dramani administration according to some social media users bit more than he could chew when he sought to battle the Spokesperson and Economic Advisor for the Vice President on the Newsfile radio and television programme.

To them, Dr Boako’s intellectual discussion was more admirable than that of Jinapor as the two engaged in a battle of facts checking on the economic achievements of the current government compared to the previous administration.

On social media, many were full of admiration for Dr Boako for his intellectual dexterity on economics and governance issues.

After leading the public dialogue to counter the comprehensive presentation by the Vice President a day earlier at the maiden Regional Results Fair in Kumasi, many were those who expected that the former deputy power minister was going to shred the vintage of Dr Bawumia into pieces.

It appeared however that Mr Jinapor failed to tackle the issues raised by the Vice President head-on with facts and figures.

From the general economy to energy and agriculture, the NDC MP resorted to what social media users said were tangential arguments and sought to set his own facts and interrogate them instead of responding directly to evidence presented in Kumasi by Dr Bawumia.

With the young Economist holding him in check and occasionally checkmating, Mr Jinapor at a point seemed frustrated and almost lost his temper and the programme had to take an unplanned break.

There were however those who thought Mr Jinapor was on top of the issues.

Member of Parliament for Sekondi Constituency in the Western Region, Andrew Agyapa Mercer, has thrown the gauntlet down to former President John Dramani Mahama to hold a press conference on the Airbus SE scandal, like he usually does to speak his mind on happenings in the country, “if he is a man”.

Andrew Agyapa Mercer, when asked on Me Man Nti in an interview with Adakabre Frimpong Manso on Neat FM whether it is not a ploy by members of his party [NPP] to reinforce the corruption tag on the NDC flagbearer by harping on the airbus scandal stressed: “he should come and tell us the report on the said scandal from UK was wrong or he is not the G01 as stated in the report like he does to other national issues.”

  • Wendy Shay gives Legon Cities, Olympics fans a Valentines Day to remember [PHOTOS]

What they got at half-time was more than they could have hoped for.

There were screams from the moment Wendy stepped on the pitch and those screams persisted until her epic performance ended.

Her energetic performance at the very least matched the similar shows helmed by Shatta Wale, Kwesi Arthur and Medikal before her.

But the cheers for Wendy were certainly the loudest, as she sang hit song after hit song and particularly when she gyrated around the stadium.

As she danced around the stadium, her progress was followed keenly followed by the excited fans in the stadium and by our photographer at the stadium, Yaw Antwi Owusu.

The match itself is currently tied at 1-1.

  • Abolish death penalty Amnesty International to Akufo-Addo

Amnesty International (AI) has made a strong case to President Akufo-Addo, for the abolishing of the death penalty from the Statute books of the country.

It is the position of Amnesty International Ghana that the country can achieve over ninety-five (95%) of the abolition of the death penalty without a constitutional amendment.

Addressing the President at the Jubilee House when a delegation led by the Director of Amnesty International Ghana, Robert Akoto Amoafo, paid a courtesy call on him, a member of the Delegation and well known Ghanaian lawyer, Martin Kpebu, noted that legal authority for capital punishment in Ghana can be found in six instances in the Statute books of the country.

The 1992 Constitution, specifically, Article 3(3) which states as follows, “Any person who (a) by himself or in concert with others by any violent or other unlawful means, suspends or overthrows or abrogates this Constitution or any part of it, or attempts to do any such act; or (b) aids and abets in any manner any person referred to in paragraph (a) of this clause; commits the offence of high treason and shall, upon conviction, be sentenced to suffer death” is the first instance. The remaining five (5) instances are all in an ordinary Act of Parliament, The Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960, (Act 29) and specifically sections 46, 49, 49A, 180, 194 and 317A, which can easily be amended.

“Our submission is that to the extent that section 46 which is on murder and that is by far overwhelmingly the commonest offence that the death penalty is given today is in an ordinary Act of Parliament, all that we have to do is to Amend section 46 and the other sections of Act 29” Martin Kpebu said.

“Even though we know that for a long time now Ghana does not execute a person on death roll, but your excellency, the conditions, the solitary confinement is practically mental torture. I have been to Nsawam a couple of times and it is not a good sight to behold” Mr Kpebu added.

    Improving prison conditions

Another member of the Delegation, Mr. Samuel Agbotsey, addressing the issue of “improving prison conditions”, indicated that the issue of overcrowding in Ghanaian prisons is a matter of International concern. Amnesty International Mr. Agbotsey said is calling on government to take immediate steps to improve prison conditions in Ghana. He urged government to take steps to actualize its plans regarding building two prison service hospitals in the Southern and Northern sectors of the country as contained in the 2016 manifesto of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    President Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo in response to the arguments of the Amnesty International Ghana delegation noted that the concern about the death penalty in the Statute books of Ghana is a genuine one that must be resolved.

“The solution that you are proposing is an ingenious one. To the extent that five out of six offences can, in fact, be dealt with by statutory enactments is something that the Attorney General and Minister for the Interior and other security agencies in the country will put their heads around the idea and bring some suggestions to us in cabinet for a decision” President Akufo-Addo stated.

The President further signaled to the delegation that all the other issues they tabled such as the Advancing of Non-Custodial Sentencing in Ghana, Improvement of prison conditions, and the ratification of some three international protocols; the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aimed at the abolition of the death penalty, the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), and Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, will all be addressed and dealt with appropriately.

    Amnesty International

Amnesty International is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. They campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.

They are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. They investigate and expose the facts, whenever and wherever abuses happen as well as lobby governments, and other powerful groups such as companies to make sure they keep their promises and respect international law.

  • Kotoko to lock horns with Ashgold

Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold will be locked up in a fierce Ghana Premier League (GPL) regional derby at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium tomorrow.

It is a top 10th week fixture that will define their fate in the bid grab any of the top three positions on the league table.

Both teams have been exciting to watch this season, recording encouraging results to keep their dreams alive.

It will be a big game for the Porcupine Warriors though considering their struggles with clubs at the top half of the table.

But the most important thing is that they are able to overcome the struggles to emerge eventual winners; the games against Liberty Professionals and Hearts of Oak are clear examples.

Against the Miners, Kotoko will have things extremely tough especially in the absence of their vociferous fans currently serving a Disciplinary Committee ban arising out of an attack on match officials.

However, their resolution to gun for the title will spur them against Ashgold who were full of promise when they played Hearts of Oak in Accra.

Like a typical academy squad, the Miners will want to have more of the ball and attack the Porcupine Warriors who are also playing well by creating very few chances.

Kotoko are favourites to win considering the danger Emmanuel Gyamfi, Justice Blay, Patrick Yeboah and wield but at their defensive best, Ashgold can hold their own and come out with a draw.

Bechem United will make a trip to the capital when they play as guests of Accra Hearts of Oak in another dicey game for the Phobians at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The visiting team appear to have improved on their away form and that could make the Phobians sit on the edges of their seat just as it happened to Berekum Chelsea on their opening day fixture.

Hearts, though, have been not been so brilliant but have been good going forward but have been let down by their inability to take their chances.

Against WAFA, Aduana Stars and Ashgold recently, they created several match-winning opportunities which were wasted by Joseph Esso and Barnie Afriyie.

Bechem may not provide a stiffer opposition like any of the aforementioned the stadium for which reason Hearts will be expected to have a great day but to avoid a shock.

WAFA and Dreams FC will battle it out at the Sogakope pitch in what the host are expected to capitalized on the advantage that comes with the astro pitch to win.

Many of the visiting teams are usually not comfortable playing there and determine their fate before the start but having drawn with Hearts and Kotoko and lost to Liberty Professionals there, it means visiting teams have found a way to face the academy lads amd that is what Dreams FC must look out for.

The Akoon park will be full of fireworks when home team, Medeama SC engage Elmina Shark just as Liberty Professionals aould be expected to be at their very best to earn a point against Aduana Stars at the Dansoman Carl Reindorf Park.

Dwarfs will have it tough at home when they play Karela at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium with Inter Allies hoping to cause an upset by beating Berekum Chelsea at Berekum.

Techiman Eleven Wonders will welcome King Faisal to Techiman in what could be a second successive win for the host.

  • Thomas Partey scores in Atletico Madrid draw with Valencia

Thomas Partey registered his second La Liga goal of the season as Atletico Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Valencia.

Los Rojiblancos were 1-0 victors over Granada in their last outing and coming up against Los Che was going to be difficult.

Marcos Llorente gave the away team the lead in the 15th minute until Gabriel Paulista equalised five minutes to the break.

One more goal was going to come before the half-time whistle and it came via Partey who made a run from midfield, skipping past a couple of challenges before firing in a fierce shot from the edge of the 18-yard area which left Valencia goalie Jaume Domenech with no chance.

Central African Republic midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia made it 2-2 in the 59th minute.

Partey put in a solid performance for Atleti, with five shots, 70 touches (the most in the Atletico squad) and 36 accurate passes (80%).

The 26-year old Ghana international also successfully attempted all four dribbles, won eight of 10 ground duels and made two tackles and three interceptions.

Diego Simeone’s men remains in fourth place, but are under threat from Sevilla and Real Sociedad who could leapfrog them should they see off Espanyol and Eibar respectively on Sunday.

Aleti next turn their attention to the Champions League Round of 16 where they tackle reigning champions Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano next Tuesday.

  • ‘NPP are problem solvers in opposition but in government they become the problem’ Jinapor jabs

Member of Parliament for Yapei/Kusawgu and former Deputy Power Minister, John Jinapor has once again punched holes in Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s presentation; insisting that it is deceptive.

Jinapor who was the former Deputy Minister for Power under the erstwhile Mahama administration recently led a press conference reacting to the ruling government’s maiden Townhall meeting and Results fair led by Dr Bawumia.

“It is important and I like it that Dr Bawumia decided to do some comparisons, we welcome that comparisons. Indeed, we want them to bring that on because we hold a superior record head-to-head, pound-for-pound, eyeball-to-eyeball when it comes to NPP and NDC,” he said.

Reiterating similar comments on Friday’s edition of Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, Jinapor indicated that “If we take what he said one after the other, there is complete and total deception”.

According to him, “when NPP is in opposition, they have all the answers and when they come into government, they become the problem.”

  • Manchester City’s two-year European ban explained

Manchester City have been banned from UEFA club competitions for the next two seasons after being found to have committed “serious breaches” of financial regulations.

The reigning Premier League champions, who have also been fined £24.9m, intend to appeal against the sanctions to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

City have been found to have overstated sponsorship revenue and break-even information in accounts submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016. UEFA acted on the decision of the independent Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) following a hearing held last month.

UEFA opened an investigation into City following a series of new allegations about the club in the media, led by German magazine Der Spiegel.

In the absence of a successful appeal, City will be unable to play in Europe in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Yes. City have been drawn against 13-time European champions Real Madrid in the last-16 of this season’s competition. The first leg of that tie will be played on February 26 at the Bernabeu, with the return match scheduled for March 10 in Manchester.

May, 2014 – City were handed a £49m fine by UEFA – £32m of which was suspended – for failing UEFA Financial Fair Play rules and were restricted to a 21-man Champions League squad for the 2014-15 season.

November, 2018 – German magazine Der Spiegel, citing documents and emails provided by the whistle-blowing platform Football Leaks, published a series of articles which accused City of trying to get around European football’s FFP rules. City had repeatedly described Der Spiegel’s reports as the product of a “clear and organised” attempt to tarnish their reputation.

March 7, 2019 – UEFA announced it had launched a formal investigation into alleged breaches of FFP rules by City following a series of fresh allegations in the media. City said in a statement: “Manchester City welcomes the opening of a formal UEFA investigation as an opportunity to bring to an end the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails. The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club’s published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record.”

March 8 – The Premier League confirmed it was investigating City over alleged FFP breaches.

May 16 – UEFA’s club financial control body chief investigator referred City’s case to UEFA’s adjudicatory chamber following the conclusion of his investigation.

June 6 – City asked the Court of Arbitration for Sport to throw out the FFP case brought against them by UEFA.

Nov 15 – City failed in their bid to get UEFA investigation kicked out.

Feb 14, 2020 – City were banned from UEFA club competitions for the next two seasons and fined £24.9m after being found to have “committed serious breaches of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations”. City announced they would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

What is Financial Fair Play (FFP)?

FFP was introduced by UEFA as an attempt to prevent clubs falling into serious financial difficulty by overspending. Clubs are expected to operate within their means and meet break-even targets, while dealings have to be transparent.

    What are the rules?

Regulations, which must be adhered to by all clubs participating in UEFA competitions, were drawn up in 2009 and introduced at the start of the 2011/12 season. Clubs must balance their books over the course of three years. Income needs to be generated by the club, including for example matchday takings, TV revenue, advertising, sponsorship, player sales and prize money.

What are the punishments for breaking the rules?

There are a variety of sanctions available for non-compliance. These range from warnings and reprimands, to disqualification from a competition, exclusion from future competitions and being stripped of a title. Fines, points deductions and restrictions on the registration of players are also possible.

How could a European ban affect the club?

City have been Champions League regulars for the past decade. An absence of European football would result in a major loss of revenue. Additionally, big-name transfer targets may be deterred and choose rival clubs, while current City players desperate for European glory could question their futures.

Who would benefit from City’s European expulsion?

At the moment, Sheffield United. With City on course for a top-four Premier League finish, UEFA regulations dictate their Champions League place being passed to the team which finishes fifth, a spot currently occupied by the Blades. Tottenham, Manchester United, Everton and Wolves are the main contenders just behind Chris Wilder’s side.

  • Provide us a district hospital Chiefs of Bosome Freho to Akufo-Addo

The Chiefs and Elders of Bosome Freho District in the Ashanti Region have made a passionate appeal to the President to build a district hospital for their Traditional Area to augment the efforts of the two clinics built for Bosome Freho by the Busia government as far back as 1970.

The Chiefs and elders of Bosome Freho made the appeal at the Jubilee House when they paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo on the 14th of February 2020 led by the District Chief Executive of Bosome Freho, Yaw Danso.

Former Member of Parliament for the Bosome Freho Constituency, Gabriel Yaw Amoah, addressing the President on behalf of the Delegation noted that health care is a major challenge in Bosome Freho due to the lack of a modern health facility apart from the two clinics that were built in the District during the Busia administration.

The Bosome Freho delegation further requested that government through the Ministry of Education should give urgent consideration to building a new Senior High School in their traditional area. He indicated that the Constituency currently has only one Secondary school which is not able to meet the educational needs of the entire community.

“We plead with you Mr. President to do everything possible to provide us with one secondary school,” Mr. Amoah said.

President Akufo-Addo in his response to the requests by the Chiefs and Elders of Bosome Freho noted that their concerns bother on issues that are very dear to his heart particularly on the issue of education.

“I get surprised when people criticize former Prime Minister Busia. In just two years and four months in office, he built clinics in virtually every town in the country and yet people talk so bitterly about him. I think my administration must do everything possible to build on his legacy in Bosome Freho” President Akufo-Addo stated.

On the issue of availability of secondary education in Bosome Freho and its environs, President Akufo-Addo said he is very much taken aback that only one secondary school serves the entire area.

“I am surprised that a place like Bosome Freho has only one secondary school. We have to deal with it immediately,” President Akufo-Addo said.

    Bosome Freho district

The Bosome Freho District is one of the twenty-seven (27) Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Its capital is Asiwa. The District is among the new Districts and Municipalities that were created in 2008 by the then President, John Kufuor. The District has only one Senior High School, Bosome Senior High Technical School, a District Magistrate Court at Asiwa, the Asiwa Health Centre and a Police Station. According to the 2010 Population Census of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), the population of Bosome Freho stood at 60,397.

  • Feasibility studies on proposed Sky-Train project completed – GRDA

Chief Executive of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) says the feasibility studies on the proposed sky-train project for Ghana has been completed and is under review.

According to Richard Dombo, government after the review will sign a contract to begin the implementation of the project.

“The sky trains are on an elevator platform rather than underground. They will be running on platforms over the city of Accra. It will be a community train and not an intercity-one. At the moment, the feasibility studies have been completed and it is being studied and reviewed before the contract is signed,” he explained on Eyewitness News on February 13.

Earlier in 2019, Railway Minister, Joe Ghartey signed a US$2.3bn concession with a South African group, Africa Investment (Ai) SkyTrain Consortium, for the construction of the Accra Sky Train Project.

The Minister indicated that the project will ease the increasing road traffic congestion in Accra and boost economic activities in the capital city.

    About the SkyTrain project

SkyTrain systems are pre-fabricated using precision moulded, pre-stressed reinforced concrete components that are capable of being installed at a very rapid rate, meaning that there is minimal disruption and congestion in the urban area that is undergoing installation and commissioning.

The proposed SkyTrain initiative in Accra provides for the development of five routes, four of which are comprised of radial routes that originate at the proposed SkyTrain Terminal, at the heart of Accra, at a newly developed Kwame Nkrumah circle, and one route that provides and intra-city commuter loop distribution service, also emanating from Circle.

The project envisages a total track length across all routes of 194 kilometres.

  • Sex robots may cause psychological damage

US researchers have warned that the availability of sex robots with artificial intelligence (AI) poses a growing psychological and moral threat to individuals and society.

They say the technology is escaping oversight because agencies are too embarrassed to investigate it.

The scientists want action to prevent the unregulated use of such robots.

Dr Christine Hendren of Duke University told BBC News that “the stakes were high”.

“Some robots are programmed to protest, to create a rape scenario,” she said.

“Some are designed to look like children. One developer of these in Japan is a self-confessed paedophile, who says that this device is a prophylactic against him ever hurting a real child.

“But does that normalise and give people a chance to practise these behaviours that should be treated by just stamping them out?”

Dr Hendren was speaking here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

A number of sex robots are advertised online. A US-based firm, Realrobitix, has posted a video marketing its Harmony robot for between $8,000 and $10,000.

It is a life-sized doll which can blink and move its eyes and neck, and also its lips as it talks.

Speaking with a Scottish accent, the mannequin says, “if you play your cards right you will have some pleasure and fun coming your way”.

And the firm’s founder and CEO, Matt McMullen explains that Harmony has AI that enables “her” to develop a relationship with the owner.

“She is going to remember things about you, your likes, your dislikes and your experiences,” says Mr McMullen.

Kathleen Richardson, who is a professor of the Ethics and Culture of Robots and AI at De Montfort University in Leicester, wants this kind of marketing outlawed.

“These companies are saying, ‘you don’t have a friendship? You don’t have a life partner? Don’t worry we can create a robot girlfriend for you’.

“A relationship with a girlfriend is based on intimacy, attachment and reciprocity. These are things that can’t be replicated by machines,” she said.

Prof Richardson advises a pressure group that has been set up to monitor the emergence of these products. The campaign against sex robots is working with policy experts to draw up legislation aimed at banning claims that companion robots can be a substitute for human relationships.

“Are we going to move into a future where we keep normalising the idea of women as sex objects?” she told BBC News.

“If someone has a problem with a relationship in their actual lives you deal with that with other people, not by normalising the idea that you can have a robot in your life and it can be as good as a person.”

He belongs to another woman so please it had better be worth it. Don’t go and collect chocolate and flowers as gifts from a married man oh.

  • Unprotected sex alarming among girls in Tano North Municipality

Unprotected sex is contributing to a surge in teenage pregnancy in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

Reports showed that more girls in the Municipality, some as low as nine years, could not complete their basic education because of unwanted pregnancies.

    In 2019, the Municipality recorded 306 pregnancies mostly between 13 and 17 years, 326 in 2016, 404 in 2017 and 437 in 2018.

Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, raised the concern when she interacted with more than 1,000 students and pupils at a forum on Adolescent Sexual Health Rights held at Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Ahafo Region.

The Ministry with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organised the forum to sensitise the participants on child right interventions, laws, conventions and protocols.

Mrs Prempeh who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North, indicated that adolescent girls were particularly vulnerable in harmful practices and sexual and gender-based violence of all forms.

She appealed to parents to collaborate with traditional authorities and teachers to monitor movements of girls in the area to help in the drastic reduction, if not total prevention of the teenage pregnancy menace.

Education on sexual reproductive health care services must also be intensified in public schools for girls to understand and control their sexual behaviours, Mrs Prempehs said.

Between 2000 and 2013, about 177,841 cases including rape, defilement, incest and compulsory marriages were reported to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police service, the MP stated.

In addition, she said about 32 per cent of women and girls between 15 and 24 years thought that wife beating could be justified due to socio-cultural norms and stereotypes.

Mrs Prempeh expressed regret that Ghana was among 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East where Female Genital Mutilation was still prevalence despite efforts being made to put an end to the practice.

Among other visions, Mr. Faisal Bawa, Programme Assistant at the UNFPA said the UN agency worked to ensure zero maternal deaths in the country.

He underscored the need to empower girls to be able to stand for their sexual and other human rights to enable them to become responsible women.

By so doing, their lives would be devoid of any form of abuse, exploitation and harmful practices that impeded their growth and development, he added.

Mr. George Yaw Ankamah, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Director of the Department of Children, indicated that cases of child labour had reduced because many children had been enrolled in schools.

He observed that the school feeding programme had been a contributor to increased enrolment in primary schools in the three Regions and called on the government to strengthen the programme.

Mr. Ankamah reminded parents it was an offence to use their children for exploitative work, saying culprits would be prosecuted.

  • Indebted road contractor secures court order to seize Highway Authority cars

A contractor has begun confiscating the vehicles belonging to the Ghana Highway Authority for auction after a court order.

The authority is indebted to a contractor who is known only as Big Aidoo.

The contractor who is also indebted to Best Point Savings and Loans proceeded to court to demand payment from the state to settle the financial firm.

Citi News checks indicate that the contractor has attributed his inability to pay his debts to the failure or the Authority to pay him for work done.

Information on the amount owed the contractor is not readily available.

When Citi News visited the offices of the authority in Accra on Friday, February 14, 2020, over 10 of Ghana Highway Authority vehicles were seen being towed away to an undisclosed location.

It was a heated atmosphere at around 1:00 pm when work was disrupted by the seizures.

The vehicles seized included an office bus which conveys workers of the company from their destinations to the offices on a daily basis.

Some Nissan pickups and four-wheel-drive vehicles used by officials of the institution were also seized.

Most of the cars were towed because the authority insisted it had no keys to the vehicles.

Some workers of the Authority, who had their items in some of the cars, were given the chance to clear them before the cars were taken away.

Sources say the contractor was engaged by the Ghana Highway Authority to construct roads several years ago.

The seized vehicles are to be auctioned in the coming days to recover the money owed the financial firm.

Though the government claims it has so far paid over GHS5 billion as outstanding arrears to road contractors since 2017, a number of them continue to complain that they have not been paid.

  • The Chocolate in Korea called Ghana

Ghana-branded chocolates are produced with ingredients including cacao beans from Ghana in West Africa and milk, bringing forth a thick and soft taste. Since the brand was launched in 1975, it has led the local chocolate market.

Chocolate first appeared in Korea in the late Joseon period (1392 1910).

There is a story that Westerners who visited Korea gave chocolate as a present to members of the royal household. Then, during the Korean War (1950 1953), U.S. soldiers brought chocolate to Korea as part of their rations and a small number of people started to become aware of the chocolate.

In March 1975, Lotte Confectionary introduced Ghana Chocolate Milk and Ghana Chocolate Cacao. The chocolate bars were, of course, named after the origin of their main ingredient: Ghana.

Ghana chocolates stirred quite a sensation when they were released. The product boasted great taste, flavour and quality that could match any imports and impressed local consumers. From the beginning, the company adopted a “micro-grinding technique” by which all the ingredients were ground down to tiny particles.

The chocolate tasted soft and tender when it first touched the tip of one´s tongue. A lot of cacao butter was used to strengthen the genuine chocolaty soft taste. Cacao butter, a type of fat from the bean, melts at a slightly lower temperature than that of the human body. So, the chocolate melts instantly when put in the mouth.

Ghana brand chocolate bars are famous for their ads and commercials that strongly appealed to consumers. Its TV commercials and ads in the 1980s featured the popular line, “Even solitude feels sweet when with Ghana,” which captured the hearts of many emotional teenagers. The TV commercials enjoyed huge popularity as if they were romantic films.

In September 1996, Lotte adopted a “Better Taste & Color Treatment” (BCT) methodology which was then being used in Europe, and further improved the quality of its Ghana chocolate bars.

Lotte now offers Ghana Milk, Ghana Mild and Ghana Premium, which is dark chocolate with strong cacao flavours. In addition, the company also sells Ghana Black, which has a darker, thicker taste, again with a strong cacao flavour, and Mini Ghana Mild in single bite-sized packages.

  • Streatham attacker named as Sudesh Amman

A man shot dead by police after he stabbed people in south London had been released from prison in January.

Sudesh Amman, 20, was released around a week ago after serving half of his sentence of three years and four months for terror offences.

He was under active police surveillance at the time of the attack on Streatham High Road, which police believe to be an Islamist-related terrorist incident.

Three people were injured but none are in a life-threatening condition.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the government would announce further plans for “fundamental changes to the system for dealing with those convicted of terrorism offences” on Monday.

He said the government had moved quickly to introduce measures strengthening its response to terrorism, including longer prison sentences and more money for police, following the attack at Fishmongers Hall, near London Bridge, in November.

At the time of Amman’s release there were concerns about the danger he might pose to the public but there were no legal mechanisms to keep him in prison, BBC political correspondent Chris Mason said.

Given November’s attack also involved a convicted terrorist released mid-way through his sentence, our correspondent said there is “a desperate desire” within government to be seen to be acting quickly.

Gunshots were heard on Streatham High Road just after 14:00 GMT on Sunday.

Reports suggest Amman entered a shop and started stabbing people. It appears he then left the shop and stabbed a woman.

Witnesses reported hearing three gunshots and seeing a man lying on the ground outside a Boots pharmacy, as armed police approached and shouted at those nearby to move back.

The Met Police said armed officers – who were part of a “proactive counter-terrorism operation” and were following the suspect on foot – were in “immediate attendance”.

The man had a hoax device strapped to his body, police said.

The BBC’s Daniel Sandford said the events appeared to unfold after witnesses saw an unmarked police car pull in front of another car near Streatham Common, forcing it to stop.

He said this could be linked to the subsequent stabbings and police shooting and it was possible somebody was stopped, before being followed by undercover officers.

London Ambulance Service said it treated the three people for injuries at the scene and all were taken to hospital.

A man in his 40s was initially considered to be in a life-threatening condition but this is no longer the case.

A woman in her 50s whose injuries were not life-threatening has been discharged from hospital.

Another woman in her 20s continues to receive hospital treatment for minor injuries, believed to have been caused by glass following shots from the police.

Police said they were “confident that this is an isolated incident which has been contained”.

Officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command are now leading an investigation into the incident.

Streatham High Road remains closed and a cordon is in place, with enhanced police patrols in the area.

  • PIACs current structure too weak to prosecute Deputy Energy Minister

A Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has described the current structure of the Public Interest Accountability Committee (PIAC) as weak.

Dr. Amin said PIAC has been unable to enforce recommendations of its own findings.

This description is in reaction to comments by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggesting that establishment of the committee was part of the efforts of the erstwhile NDC government to ensure increased accountability in the petroleum sector.

At a press briefing held on Friday, Dr. Amin said government is considering a Bill to widen roles of PIAC beyond presenting annual and semi-annual reports.

“They [the NDC] created PIAC, but a weak PIAC. As a committee, it did not have teeth to bite as they were merely required to produce semi-annual and annual reports whose adverse findings cannot be enforced. PIAC cannot summon officials. PIAC cannot prosecute. That is the PIAC we are gaining credit for. The NPP government is currently holding consultations with stakeholders on a new Bill which is going to empower PIAC to enforce its findings,” he said.

    PIAC and its recent findings

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee is an independent statutory body mandated to promote transparency and accountability in the management of petroleum revenues in Ghana.

However, its most recent report was about education; the Free Senior High School policy implemented by the NPP government.

PIAC in its 2018 and 2019 monitoring report noted that about GHS680 million was allocated for the programme in 2019, as against GHS 415 million in 2018.

Observations made by the Committee suggest that some key issues are hampering the effective implementation of the policy as well as affecting the quality education being provided at the second cycle level.

The report observed that though the policy directly resulted in improved enrolment and feeding of students, supply of textbooks, uniforms and jerseys, and the early reporting of students to school; a lack of, or inadequate infrastructure, an over-burdened critical teaching staff, a dumping of poor-grade students particularly in deprived schools, as well as delays in releasing funding, were threats to the Free SHS program.

  • Coronavirus: Beijing orders 14-day quarantine for returnees

Beijing has ordered everyone returning to the city to go into quarantine for 14 days or risk punishment in the latest attempt to contain the deadly new coronavirus, state media report.

Residents were told to “self-quarantine or go to designated venues to quarantine” after returning to the Chinese capital from holidays.

The measure came as Egypt confirmed the first coronavirus case in Africa.

Over 1,500 people have died from the virus, which originated in Wuhan city.

The notice on Friday from Beijing’s virus prevention working group was issued as residents returned from spending the Lunar New Year in other parts of China.

The holiday was extended this year to help contain the outbreak.

More than 20 million people live in Beijing.

China’s national health commission on Saturday reported 143 new deaths, bringing the toll to 1,523. All but four of the latest victims were in hard-hit Hubei province.

A further 2,641 people have been newly confirmed as infected, bringing the national total to 66,492.

Outside mainland China, there have been more than 500 cases in 24 countries, and three deaths: one each in Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan.

A World Health Organization (WHO)-led mission to China will start its outbreak investigation work this weekend, focusing on how the virus – officially named Covid-19 – is spreading and its severity, director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

The mission, including international experts, will also look at how and when more than 1,700 health workers contracted the virus.

The team consists of 12 international members and their 12 Chinese counterparts.

“Particular attention will be paid to understanding transmission of the virus, the severity of disease and the impact of ongoing response measures,” said Dr Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies programme.

    Africa sees its first case

Egypt’s health ministry on Friday confirmed the first case of the coronavirus in Africa.

The ministry described the person as a foreigner but did not disclose the nationality.

It said it had notified the WHO, and the patient had been placed in isolation in a hospital.

Experts had earlier warned that it may not be long before the first case was confirmed in Africa, given its increasingly close ties to China.

Chinese health workers die in the outbreak

Chinese officials say six health workers have died.

Zeng Yixin, vice minister of China’s National Health Commission, said 1,102 medical workers had been infected in Wuhan and another 400 in other parts of Hubei province.

“The duties of medical workers at the front are indeed extremely heavy; their working and resting circumstances are limited, the psychological pressures are great, and the risk of infection is high,” Mr Zeng said, as quoted by Reuters news agency.

Local authorities have struggled to provide protective equipment such as respiratory masks, goggles and protective suits in hospitals in the area.

On 7 February, the plight of medical workers was highlighted by the death of Li Wenliang, a doctor at Wuhan Central Hospital who had tried to issue the first warning about the virus on 30 December.

He had sent out a warning to fellow medics but police told him to stop “making false comments”.

A wave of anger and grief flooded Chinese social media site Weibo when news of Dr Li’s death broke.

    What are the other developments?

    – In the UK, health officials contacted hundreds of people who attended a conference in London, after it emerged that one of them was diagnosed with coronavirus

    – China said it would stagger the return of children to school – several provinces have closed schools until the end of February

    – In Vietnam, which borders China, thousands of people in villages near the capital, Hanoi, have been put under quarantine after several cases were discovered. Vietnam has now confirmed at least 16 cases

    – The Red Cross has called for sanctions relief for North Korea, which would allow the aid agency to transfer funds to buy equipment. Testing kits and protective clothing are urgently needed to prepare for a possible outbreak, it says

  • Spate of violence leaves at least 30 dead in Mali

At least 30 people, including nine soldiers, have been killed in three separate incidents in Mali.

Twenty-one were killed when gunmen attacked a village in central Mali, burning houses, crops and livestock.

A group of eight soldiers also died in an ambush, while another was killed during an attack on a military camp in the Gao region.

Mali has been blighted by instability since 2012 when an Islamist rebellion broke out in the north.

The village of Ogossagou, where one of Friday’s attacks took place, is mostly home to Fulanis, a largely-Muslim ethnic group who traditionally work as herders.

Other ethnic groups in Mali – including the Dogon community – accuse the Fulani of being linked to jihadi groups operating across the Sahel region.

These accusations have fuelled a spate of inter-ethnic violence in recent years.

Last March, 160 people were killed another attack at Ogossagou, which authorities blamed it on a Dogon militia.

The attack led to several protests over perceived inaction by the government, and Mali’s prime minster at the time, Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga, later resigned.

No one has claimed responsibility for the latest incident, but village chief Aly Ousmane Barry told local media that the gunmen struck several hours after government troops had withdrawn from the area.

In a separate incident, Malian security forces said on Twitter that they had sustained “material damage” during an ambush in the village of Bintia, which killed eight soldiers.

A ninth soldier was killed in another attack at a camp in Mondoro, which is regularly targeted by militants.

Media captionWhat is behind Mali’s massacres?

Since 2012, Malian forces managed to regain control large swathes of territory taken by militants with assistance help from France, which has 4,500 troops deployed in the region. The UN has 13,000 peacekeeping troops in Mali.

But thousands of lives have been lost as Mali struggles to contain the violence, which has spread to neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Combating militants in the Sahel region is seen as important for maintaining security further afield, including Europe.

France’s Foreign Minister, Florence Parly, travelled to Washington last month in the hopes of persuading American to continue its logistical backing – drones, intelligence and transport – which she said was crucial to the French operation.

  • Local industries urged to register under GEPA

Local industries have been advised to register their operations under the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) to competitively market their products to meet the demands of the international market.

Ms Afua Asabea Asare, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GEPA, who gave the advice, said local industries that registered with the Authority benefited from value for money services such as training courses, certification, quality product packaging amongst others to meet demands of the international market.

She emphasised that “Many local industries think that they are just paying GH¢200.00 for registration every year and that ends it, but registering with GEPA, we provide you with a lot of support and training even more than the registration fee.”

Ms Asare was speaking in an interview with journalists in Tamale after visiting and interacting with some local industry players including; producers and exporters as part of her working tour to the Northern Region on Thursday.

The visit was to assess the level of improvement in terms of operations of the various local industries as well as understand their challenges and identify possible support that could be provided to boost their operations.

Some of the local industries visited included; Maltiti A. Enterprise, dealers in shea butter production, AMAATI Company Limited and B-Diet, both agribusinesses.

Ms Asare said GEPA had identified some agro-products,and would study and improve on to help promote them on the international market.

She said local industries had greater potentials and played key roles in government’s effort at improving on the country’s economy, and encouraged them to register under GEPA to help achieve the goal.

Hajia Abukari Rabiatu, CEO of Maltiti A. Enterprise said there were improvement in the patronage of shea products as the company now sold the product to buyers in the United States of America, Australia among others.

She said the lack of inputs such as milling machine, was affecting the industry in terms of large quantity production to meet increased demand.

She, therefore, appealed to government to support the local industries in the region with inputs to help facilitate the processing of their products.

  • GSA and NIC hold sensitisation forum on cargo Insurance draft protocol

The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has held a sensitisation forum for insurance companies and brokers.

It was to elicit their views on a draft protocol for the placement of Cargo Insurance locally.

The forum forms part of stakeholder engagements to finalise the Cargo Insurance placement protocol for implementation.

The Chief Executive of the GSA, Ms Benonita Bismarck, underscored the importance of implementing the protocol for shippers in Ghana.

She noted that the implementation of the protocol would ensure that shippers in the country have a stake in selecting their preferred insurance companies for doing business with.

The protocol would also contribute to improving doing business through relatively low premiums, prompt payment of claims, among others.

The Head of Freight and Logistics Department of the GSA, Mr Fred Asiedu-Dartey, who deputized for the GSA’s CEO, assured the stakeholders of the Authority’s commitment to ensure that cargo insurance was procured locally.

The Deputy Commissioner of the NIC, Mr Michael Kofi Andoh, took participants through the draft protocol detailing the legal framework and benefits to insurers, shippers and the economy.

He appealed to the insurance industry to make sure that shippers get value for money when they place insurance for their import or export cargo.

The forum provided opportunity for further inputs from key stakeholders like the insurance companies and insurance brokers.

Mrs Gertrude Ohene-Asienim, the Chairperson of the Institute of Chartered Ship-brokers (West Africa) and a Technical Partner for the Project, explained the rationale for insurance companies to build the necessary capacity, both financial and technical to ensure quality marine insurance products for the benefit of shippers.

  • Sudan to hand over Omar al-Bashir to ICC to face war crimes charges

Sudan’s former president Omar al-Bashir will be handed over to the International Criminal Court to face war crimes charges, it was announced Tuesday.

Bashir, who was ousted in April 2019 after months of nationwide protests, faces five counts of crimes against humanity and two counts of war crimes at the ICC in The Hague. The crimes were allegedly committed during Sudan’s military campaign in Darfur between 2003 and 2008.

A member of Sudan’s ruling sovereign council said Tuesday that all Sudanese wanted by the ICC would appear before it. A senior government source confirmed to CNN that Bashir was among them.

The move is part of a proposed agreement between the Sudanese government and Darfur’s rebel movement, according to the source, who asked not to be named for security reasons. No timeline has been set.

ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah told CNN: “We are aware and following the news in relation to Mr. al-Bashir. We have no official confirmation on our side at this moment.”

In a video statement, a member of Sudan’s ruling sovereign council, Mohammed al-Ta’ashy, said: “We cannot achieve justice unless we heal wounds with justice.”

The ICC issued two arrest warrants for Bashir, first in March 2009 and then in July 2010. It now considers him to be “at large.”

Bashir, who ruled Sudan for three decades, was the first sitting president to be wanted by the ICC, and the first person to be charged by the ICC for the crime of genocide, according to the court’s website.

Last December, he was sentenced to two years in a correctional facility after being found guilty of corruption and illegitimate possession of foreign currency.

Sudan had previously said it would not extradite Bashir.

  • Coronavirus: No change in outbreak despite China spike, WHO says

Coronavirus cases are not rising dramatically outside China despite a spike in Hubei province, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

The only exception was on a cruise liner docked in Japan, where 44 new cases were reported, bringing the total there to 218.

There was also no major shift in the coronavirus’s pattern of mortality or severity, according to the WHO.

The latest figures show 121 new deaths in China, bringing the total to 1,380.

The total infections jumped by 5,090 to 55,748 cases on 13 February, the National Health Commission said on Friday.

The latest figures from Hubei recorded 116 deaths and 4,823 new cases. That is a smaller increase than the previous day when there was a spike with 240 new deaths and nearly 15,000 new cases.

However, most of this was down to Hubei using a broader definition to diagnose people, said Mike Ryan, head of WHO’s health emergencies programme.

“This does not represent a significant change in the trajectory of the outbreak,” he said.

Outside China there had been two deaths and 447 cases in 24 countries, he said.

On Thursday Japan announced its first coronavirus death – a woman in her 80s who lived in Kanagawa, south-west of Tokyo.

The woman’s diagnosis was confirmed after her death and she had no obvious link to China’s Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, Japanese media reported.

On Thursday, the US state department said it was “deeply concerned” about the possible effect of an outbreak in North Korea, which has so far not reported any cases.

The US would facilitate assistance from US and international aid organisations to the country, the department said.

What is happening on the Diamond Princess?

The vessel is in quarantine in Yokohama. Not all the 3,700 people on board have been tested yet.

People with the virus are taken to hospitals on land to be treated, while those on board are largely confined to their cabins.

However, on Thursday Japan said it would allow those aged 80 or over who have tested negative for the coronavirus to disembark.

Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said they could be allowed off the ship as early as Friday but would have to stay in accommodation provided by the government, the Japan Times reported.

Meanwhile, another cruise ship – the MS Westerdam – carrying more than 2,000 people docked in Cambodia after being turned away by ports in Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Thailand despite having no sick patients on board.

    What’s behind the Hubei spike?

Until Wednesday’s increases, the number of people with the virus in Hubei was stabilising.

The new cases and deaths in the province have pushed the national death toll above 1,350 with almost 60,000 infections in total.

White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said there had been “surprise” in the US at the new cases.

“We’re a little disappointed in the lack of transparency coming from the Chinese, these numbers are jumping around,” he said.

The Trump administration was also disappointed that China had not accepted a US offer to send experts to help China respond to the outbreak, Mr Kudlow said.

China sacked two top officials in Hubei province hours after the new figures were revealed.

Mr Ryan, from the WHO, said the spike reflected a change in the way cases were diagnosed.

“Most of these cases relate to a period going back over days and weeks and are retrospectively reported as cases since sometimes back to the beginning of the outbreak itself,” he said.

Only Hubei province – which accounts for more than 80% of overall Chinese infections – is using the new definition to diagnose new cases.

The final members of a WHO team were expected to arrive in China over the weekend to investigate the epicentre of the outbreak, Mr Ryan said.

  • Only 34% of Nigerians use condoms during sex

Only 34% of adult Nigerians surveyed in a national poll use condoms during sex.

According to the survey carried out by NOIPolls, the results show that only 28% of the general population that uses condoms do so consistently.

This is despite the fact that most of those surveyed said it was easy for them to purchase a condom if needed.

Chike Nwangwu, NOIPolls CEO, told the BBC that religion and a partner’s refusal were the most common reasons given by respondents for not using condoms.

“With regards to perception and attitude on condom, 63% of Nigerians stated that the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear the word condom is sexual pleasure, while 45% disclosed that they instantly think of promiscuity when they see someone with a condom,” he said.

The survey including the following graphics to illustrate some of its findings:

The data was drawn from 1,000 adults in a country of some 200 million people.

The survey was conducted in partnership with Nigeria’s Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and the National Agency for the Control of Aids (Naca) to mark International Condom Day on 13 February.

  • USS Cole bombing: Sudan agrees to compensate families

Sudan has agreed to compensate the families of 17 US sailors who died when their ship, the USS Cole, was bombed by al-Qaeda at a port in Yemen in 2000.

This is a key condition set by the US for Sudan to be removed from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The US ruled Sudan was responsible for the attack as the two suicide bombers involved were trained in the country.

Removal from the US blacklist would allow sanctions to be lifted, a major objective of Sudan’s new government.

High inflation and shortages of fuel and foreign currency helped trigger the protests which led to the downfall last April of the long-serving President Omar al-Bashir.

It is not clear how much Khartoum has agreed to pay to the families, but the Reuters news agency quotes a source close to the deal as saying it is $30m (£23m).

    Why now?

Sudan’s new rulers are desperate to end the country’s economic isolation and gain access to the dollar-based international financial system to attract loans and investment.

The compensation is one of several steps taken recently to appease Sudan’s critics.

At least 40 people were wounded in the attack in 2000

The transitional government has agreed that Mr Bashir should be handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face genocide and war crimes charges allegedly committed in the country’s Darfur region.

Earlier in the month, Sudan’s top general Abdel-Fattah Burhan met Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Uganda in an apparent effort to normalise relations after decades of enmity.

The country’s information minister told the Associated Press that figures for the USS Cole compensation could not be revealed as negotiations were ongoing to reach a similar settlement with families of those killed in the 1998 al-Qaeda bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

More than 200 people were killed in those attacks.

Why was Sudan put in the US blacklist?

Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden lived in Sudan for five years in the 1990s as a guest of Mr Bashir’s government. Sudan was added to the US terrorism list in 1993.

The families of those killed in the USS Cole say Sudan gave al-Qaeda and Bin Laden financial and technical support. They say this allowed the group to establish training bases, run businesses and even use Sudanese diplomatic passports to carry explosives.

People queuing for fuel in Khartoum, Sudan
Sudan is suffering from acute shortages including fuel and people queue at station for hours

But Sudan has always insisted this was not the case, and a justice ministry statement has reiterated this point.

“The government of Sudan would like to point out that the settlement agreement explicitly affirmed that the government was not responsible for this incident or any terrorist act,” the state-run Suna agency quoted the statement as saying.

“It entered into this settlement out of [its] determination to settle the historical allegations of terrorism left over by the former regime, and only for the purpose of fulfilling the conditions set by the US administration to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism in order to normalise relations with the US and the rest of the world.”

What happened to the USS Cole?

On 12 October 2000 two Yemeni suicide bombers in a rubber dinghy packed with up to 225kg (500lb) of high explosives rammed the US destroyer, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the warship.

Seventeen crew were killed and at least 40 people were wounded in the attack on the ship as it was refuelling in the port of Aden.

Last year, Jamal al-Badawi, a militant linked to the attack, was killed in a US air strike on Yemen.

The attack’s alleged planner, Saudi-born Abd al-Nashiri, is being held in US custody at Guantanamo Bay.

Last year, the US Supreme Court overturned, on procedural grounds, a 2012 ruling ordering Sudan to pay more than $300m to the victims’ families.

  • Karachi groom chased from wedding after first wife turns up

A groom has been chased from his own wedding by an angry crowd – after his first wife arrived to let his new bride know he was already married to not one, but two other women.

Asif Rafiq Siddiqi, described as a bearded, hefty man in his mid-30s, was pushed and slapped by the crowd, his shirt torn and his pants ripped in the violence that followed the revelation.

The groom, who ended up cowering under a bus, was saved by unknown people.

    Polygamy is legal in Pakistan.

However, while a man can have as many as four wives, he must get the consent of his previous wives before he marries again.

It appears that Mr Siddiqi failed to fulfil this critical step, and the first his new wife and her family knew of his previous marriages was when an enraged woman marched into the banqueting hall in the coastal city of Karachi, where celebrations were taking place.

“What’s the matter sister?” one of the bride’s relatives is heard asking on a video of the event.

The woman, Madiha Siddiqi, wasted no time in getting to the point.

“He is my husband, and he is the father of this child. He told me he was going to Hyderabad for three days,” she alleged. She was with a little boy she said was their son.

The wedding was interrupted by a woman claiming to be the first of his three wives

The family then tried to usher her into a side room, which gave her the opportunity to point out more of the people she claims are her relatives.

“That is my mother-in-law and that is my jethani [sister-in-law], who said her mother had been sick for three days and was on IV drips,” Mrs Siddqi continued, before confronting the newlywed bride directly.

“Didn’t you know that he was my husband? He didn’t even think about this innocent child.”

However, it did not stop there: Ms Siddiqi said she had married the groom in 2016, after meeting him at Karachi’s Federal Urdu University, where Mr Siddiqi is understood to work.

Then she revealed he had secretly married his second wife, named as Zehra Ashraf, a teacher at Jinnah Women’s University in Karachi, in 2018. The first Mrs Siddiqi knew of that marriage was a text message from her husband’s new wife.

Mrs Siddiqi said Mr Siddiqi initially denied that wife’s existence, but later admitted he had wed for a second time.

It was Ms Ashraf who also informed Mrs Siddiqi of the latest wedding, sending her in a rage to the celebrations.

It is not clear what exactly happened next. However, police called to the scene told BBC that relatives of the bride pounced on Asif, tore up his clothes and beat him black and blue.

Officers rescued Mr Siddiqi, taking him a nearby police station – but the bride’s relatives followed and waited for him to emerge.

They pounced the moment Mr Siddiqi reappeared – sending him scuttling under a bus. In a video of the scene, voices can be heard threatening him to “come out or we’ll put the bus on fire”.

Scared, he shouts back, “one minute, one minute”, as he prepares to crawl out. As he moves, some people intervene to prevent further violence.

BBC tried to contact Mr Siddiqi and his latest bride’s relatives for comments, but they were not available.

Rao Nazim, head of Taimuriha police station, told the BBC no formal complaint had been registered as yet.

“It is a family matter, and the complainants need to go the family court to settle their issues,” he said.

  • Parents lose court appeal over baby’s treatment

Doctors can stop providing medical treatment for a brain dead baby, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

The three appeal judges analysed evidence on four-month-old Midrar Ali after a High Court judge concluded that treatment could be withdrawn.

Midrar’s father said the ruling was “terrible”, after arguing their son had been showing “signs of life”.

But doctors at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester said Midrar should be allowed a “kind and dignified death”.

Mrs Justice Lieven, who analysed evidence at a trial in the Family Division of the High Court in Manchester last month, had concluded that Midrar was brain-stem dead.

Midrar’s parents, Karwan Ali, 35, and Shokhan Namiq, 28, who live in Manchester, had asked appeal judges to overturn this ruling.

They said he was still growing and that doctors could not be sure that he will not improve, which meant more tests should be carried out.

Karwan Ali and Shokhan Namiq had asked appeal judges to overturn the High Court ruling

But appeal judges Sir Andrew McFarlane, Lord Justice Patten and Lady Justice King dismissed their challenge, saying stopping the treatment was in Midrar’s best interest.

They concluded that Midrar’s parents did not have an arguable case, and declared that their son died at 20:01 GMT on October 1, when he would have been 14 days old.

Sir Andrew said evidence showed that “awfully” Midrar no longer has a “brain that is recognisable as such”.

“There is no basis for contemplating that any further tests would result in a different outcome,” he said.

Midrar was starved of oxygen when the umbilical cord came out ahead of his birth on 18 September, causing complications.

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs St Mary’s Hospital, has previously said that Midrar has always been on a ventilator and has never breathed independently.

Midrar Ali’s parents Karwan Ali and Shokhan Namiq wanted his treatment to continue

It said his organs were deteriorating and continuing to treat Midrar was “undignified”.

Lawyers representing the hospital’s trust said three tests had confirmed brain stem death.

Speaking after the latest legal ruling, Mr Ali said: “I’m just reading what the appeal judges have said, then we’ll discuss it with our lawyers.

“He’s still growing. They can’t be 100% sure he is dead. He’s still growing. His eyes move. I’ve seen them move.”

The family’s solicitor, David Foster, said Midrar’s parents were considering an appeal and would like the court to “give weight to experts from outside the UK”.

The next step would be to take the case to the Supreme Court.

“They believe the law in this area should be reviewed and do not consider Midrar’s condition is necessarily irreversible,” Mr Foster.

  • One in four African children live in conflict zones – Report

About 170 million children live in conflict zones across Africa – equivalent to one in every four African children – the highest absolute number of any region in the world, according to a report by Save the Children, a non-governmental organisation.

The report, released Thursday, noted that while fewer children are living in conflict-affected areas, those who do run the highest risk of falling victim to serious violence since records began.

“Successive generations of children across the continent have grown up knowing nothing other than conflict, including in the three West and Central Africa countries who are included in the list of the top ten worst conflict-affected countries to be a child – the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, and Nigeria,” it stated.

According to available data, in conflict situations, girls were far more likely to be raped or fall victim to other forms of sexual abuse than boys – 87 per cent of all verified cases involved girls, while 1.5 per cent of the sexual violence targeted boys. In 11 per cent of the cases the sex of the victim was not recorded.

The report quoted an eight-year-old victim of sexual abuse from the DRC narrating her experience.

“It was a Thursday night, while I was playing with my friends, a group of four men emerged from the mountains,” the child, from the region of North Kivu, said.

“One of them kidnapped me and drove into the field, and there he forced me to sleep with him. After doing what he wanted, he left. I was left alone in the field. I felt very bad. I couldn’t stand myself anymore. A gentleman who was passing by found me and brought me home.”

According to the report, over 10,200 schools are closed across Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, the DRC and Chad, depriving over two million children of an education.

“Children have nothing to do with the causes of armed conflicts, yet we are the ones most affected by it – exposed to hunger and disease, displaced, tortured, killed, sexually abused, deprived of education, trafficked, separated from parents, recruited as child soldiers,” the report quoted Purity, 14, a girls’ rights advocate from Nigeria, as saying.

“When will children’s suffering end? Leaders should understand that if we are not heard today, we cannot speak tomorrow.”

Vishna Shah, Regional Head of Advocacy, Campaign for West and Central Africa at Save the Children, said in times of crisis, children are more vulnerable to marriage as families turn to coping mechanism to survive.

“These young girls who are forced into marriage are instantly robbed of their childhood, many have to drop out of the education system and are locked into a lifestyle where they have limited decision making power and mobility,” she said.

“Data also showed that 90 per cent of births to adolescent girls occur within a child marriage and in conflict situations.

“Girls often have limited opportunities to avoid unwanted pregnancies, and also have inadequate access to essential services such as antenatal care and assisted childbirth. More needs to be done to urgently protect girls from early marriage- this means increased investment in programmes and increased data to better understand the reality of the situation.

“It is time for world leaders to fully play their role as protectors of children and future generations by putting in place policies and practices for the best interest of children first.”

As of 2019, 101 states had endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, committing to keeping schools safe during conflicts. Fourteen of the states are in West and Central Africa, including the DRC, Mali, Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The report said more needs to be done to support children in recovering from conflict, and suggested that the proportion of humanitarian funding aimed at the protection of children must increase from 0.5 to 4 per cent.

“In DRC, for now just $3 is available per child in humanitarian child protection funding,” stated the report.

“The funding will be both for mainstream and targeted programmes on gender equality, the empowerment of girls and sexual violence in humanitarian settings as well as education in emergencies.”

  • Kenyan men ‘escape’ to Valentine’s Day conference

What started out as a joke on social media in Kenya about one of the ways men could avoid their partners on Valentine’s Day, has become a reality.

The suggestion that men tell their other halves that they are attending a Men’s Conference – has become a reality.

This year an actual Men’s Conference is being held at a five-star hotel in the capital, Nairobi.

In a clip shared by a local broadcaster, participants discuss different topics, including leadership in households and mentoring of young men.

A panel of male speakers have been exchanging religious and cultural views on relationships

However, the conference has been criticised for allowing women in the audience.

“The #MensConference that is being televised on Citizen is a Joke. How are women allowed in a men’s only function. This is just evident enough that some ‘elites’ want to hijack the event and make profits from it. Without Mzee Kibor, Issa scam.#MensConference2020,” tweeted Bravin.

“We are informed of some mediocre parody of the #MensConference2020 happening on Citizen TV. Kindly boycott, avoid, ignore and block, it has been pushed by feminine agenda. Be informed the #MenConference2020 is a private thing with top notch secrecy,” Kushnah wrote.

  • Ethiopia delays election over rainy season fears

Ethiopia’s electoral board has postponed the highly anticipated general election by nearly two weeks to 29 August.
Voting day had been set for 16 August, which was met with criticism as it coincided with the height of the rainy season in country where many people live in rural areas.

Announcing the revised timetable, the chair of the electoral board, Birtukan Mideksa – a former judge who was once a political prisoner – said that the end of August generally saw relatively less heavy rain.

Voter registration is due to begin in April and political parties can commence their campaigns late in May.
