  • Coronavirus: A Cameroon student on how he recovered

When Kem Senou Pavel Daryl, a 21-year-old Cameroonian student living in the Chinese city of Jingzhou, contracted the coronavirus he had no intention of leaving China, even if that were possible.
“No matter what happens I don’t want to take the sickness back to Africa,” he said from his university dormitory, where he is now under a 14-day quarantine.

He was suffering from a fever, a dry cough, and flu-like symptoms.

When he became ill he thought of his time as a child in Cameroon when he contracted malaria. He feared the worse.

“When I was going to the hospital for the first time I was thinking about my death and how I thought it was going to happen,” he said.

For 13 days he remained in isolation in a local Chinese hospital. He was treated with antibiotics and drugs typically used to treat HIV patients. After two weeks of care he began to show signs of recovery.

The CT scan showed no trace of the illness. He became the first African person known to be infected with the deadly coronavirus and the first to recover. His medical care was covered by the Chinese state.

Egypt has become the first country in Africa to confirm a case of the coronavirus. Health professionals warn that countries with weaker health systems may struggle to cope with a potential outbreak of the illness, which has led to more than 1,770 deaths and infected more than 72,000 people, mostly in China.

“I don’t want to go home before finishing studying. I think there is no need to return home because all hospital fees were taken care of by the Chinese government,” says Mr Senoua.

    To evacuate or not?

Since late January governments around the world, led by the US, began evacuating their citizens out of Wuhan and neighbouring cities.

But thousands of African students, workers and families, remain in lockdown across the central Hubei province – the outbreak began in the provincial capital Wuhan – and some think their governments should do more to help them.

“We are sons and daughters of Africa but Africa is not willing to come to our rescue when we need it the most,” says Tisiliyani Salima, a medical student at Tongji Medical University and president of the Zambian Wuhan student association.

For close to a month Ms Salima has been living in self-quarantine.

Time has begun to lose meaning for the 24-year old student. She spends her days sleeping and checking updates on Chinese social media apps.

She acts as the liaison between her embassy and the 186 Zambian students living under quarantine in Wuhan. Many worry about food safety, supplies, and lack information in a city that this week has seen an average of 100 deaths a day.

She watched other international classmates evacuated from the city while her countrymen and women were left behind.

“South of the Sahara most African countries have had a similar response,” says one student who agreed to talk under the condition of anonymity.

“Publicly or privately African countries say that China can handle the situation. But the situation is not under control. When you listen to the official response it tells you that the African countries do not want to offend China. We don’t have the bargaining power,” the student says.

China is currently Africa’s largest trading partner and the ties between the two have blossomed in recent years.

In the process China has become home to 80,000 African students, many attracted to the middle kingdom by scholarship programmes. But community leaders say families, young and old are stranded in Hubei province with little aid or assistance from their governments.

“People are saying: ‘Don’t bring us back because Nigeria can’t handle us.’ I feel conflicted but at the end of the day I am also human,” says Angela, a recent graduate from Nigeria, who only gave her first name.

“I would appreciate if they would recognise that there are Nigerians here but we don’t seem to be a priority. We didn’t get any response from our government,” she says.

Last week, for the first time in 22 days in lockdown, dwindling supplies forced Angela to venture out of her apartment to buy some essentials.

“The city is like a ghost town. When I left my complex I didn’t know if I would even be allowed back in. People are checking temperatures outside the gate,” she says in a phone interview from her apartment.

On 30 January the Cameroonian community penned an open letter to the president urging their government to evacuate citizens stuck in the epicentre of the outbreak.

Weeks on Dr Pisso Scott Nseke, a community leader in Wuhan, says Cameroonians are still waiting for a response.

He accepts that the community is not united in the desire to be evacuated but says they are disappointed by the lack of assistance from the government.

As of mid-February, Egypt, Algeria, Mauritius, Morocco and Seychelles had moved their citizens out of Hubei province.

Other nations such as Ghana and Kenya are reportedly considering evacuating.

    ‘We feel abandoned’

Some nations have sent financial support to their citizens.

According to the head of the Ivory Coast student association in Wuhan $490 ($380) was given to the 77 Ivoirians in the city following weeks of discussions with their government. But many are growing increasingly frustrated by their government’s stance.

Ghana has reportedly sent financial assistance to its nationals as well.

“Staying here doesn’t guarantee our safety. We are just in a country that has better medical facilities,” says Ms Salima.

“We feel abandoned. The Chinese clearly were angered by the Americans pulling their people out as they felt it caused panic,” said one student who agreed to talk on the condition of anonymity. “There is a lot of distrust here of the authorities,” he added.

Some are calling for a continent-wide strategy to help African nationals in China.

“The decision to evacuate is not a question of ‘solidarity’ with China or the lack of it. It is the responsibility of every country to ultimately look after the health of their citizens wherever they are, including in China,” says Hannah Ryder from Development Reimagined, a Beijing-based international development consultancy.

As for Mr Senoua, he says has no plans to return to Cameroon.

“It would be a bad and dangerous idea. The biggest fear I had from the virus was psychological and emotional. Going back home is not an option now.”

  • Children make up more than half of dead in Cameroon village massacre

A massacre in an anglophone region of Cameroon left up to 22 villagers dead including 14 children, the UN said Sunday, with an opposition party blaming the killings on the army.

Armed men carried out the bloodshed on Friday in the village of Ntumbo in the Northwest region, James Nunan, a local official of humanitarian coordination agency OCHA, told AFP.

“Up to 22 civilians were killed, including a pregnant woman and several children,” Nunan said, adding that 14 children — including nine under age five — were among the dead.

Eleven of the children were girls, said Nunan, head of OCHA’s office for the Northwest and Southwest regions, which are home to the West African country’s large English-speaking minority.

Separatists in the regions have been fighting the central government for three years.

The Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon, one of the country’s two main opposition parties, issued a statement saying: “The dictatorial regime (and) the supreme head of the security and defence forces are chiefly responsible for these crimes.”

A key figure in the separatist movement, lawyer Agbor Mballa, in a Facebook post also accused “state defence forces” of carrying out the killings.

An army official contacted by AFP early Sunday denied the allegations, saying simply: “False”. No other official response was immediately available.

The three-year conflict between anglophone forces seeking to break away from French-speaking Cameroon has claimed more than 3,000 lives and forced more than 700,000 people to flee their homes.

Friday’s killings followed elections on February 9 that were marred by violence in the regions blamed both on separatists and security forces.

Armed separatists prevented people from voting, threatening reprisals, while government soldiers were a heavy presence.

Separatists kidnapped more than 100 people and torched property in the run-up to the elections, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Wednesday.

The government has not yet announced the results of the elections or turnout figures.

  • Uncertainty as deadline for South Sudan unity government looms

Rival leaders in war-torn South Sudan face a February 22 deadline to form a long-delayed government of national unity.

But just a few days before the milestone, hopes for a breakthrough dampened after Riek Machar, a former vice president and rebel leader, expressed his dissatisfaction with a peace proposal made by his rival, President Salva Kiir.

Announcing a “painful” compromise, Kiir on Saturday said the world’s youngest country would return to a system of 10 states from 32, a key opposition demand, plus the three “administrative areas” of Pibor, Ruweng and Abyei.

A contentious issue that has lingered for several years, the number of states is one of the main sticking points of a peace agreement that has faltered on several fronts.

While Machar said he appreciated Kiir’s decision to “revert to 10 states”, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the creation of the three administrative areas.

“The issue of the number of states is contentious because they are the political bases of the top politicians in South Sudan,” James Okuk, a lecture of politics at the University of Juba in the South Sudanese capital, told Al Jazeera.

In a statement calling Kiir to reconsider his decision, Machar said the establishment of the three areas “opens up another Pandora’s box” that defeated the purpose of reverting to 10 states.

“The refusal of Dr Riek Machar to accept the attached three administrative areas to the 10 states is a negotiating position from [his] SPLM/A-IO (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition) – it is not rejection of 10 states,” Okuk said.

When it gained independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan had 10 states, as set out in its constitution.

Two years later, the country descended into war when Kiir accused his former deputy, Machar, of plotting a coup. The conflict has so far killed at least 380,000 people and forced millions from their homes, with nearly half the country in dire poverty.

In 2015, a fragile peace deal came under further pressure when Kiir increased the number of states from 10 to 28, and later 32 – before reverting on Saturday to 10 plus the three “administrative areas”.

Of the three areas, the oil-rich Ruweng in the north is thought to be the most contentious and the scene of some of the heaviest fighting during the war.

Oil provides almost all of the government’s revenue, making it one of the world’s most oil-dependent nations.

“During the war, both sides unilaterally formed their own states with new boundaries,” said Alan Boswell, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group.

“The dispute over the configuration of states became a major impasse blocking the peace process from moving towards a unity government,” he added.

“Machar risks alienating the regional power brokers if he appears to be rejecting compromise,” he added.

Under pressure from countries in the region, as well as the United States and United Nations, Kiir and Machar in 2018 signed another peace agreement.

Under the deal, they agreed to form a unity government in May 2019 but failed to meet the deadline amid disputes over territory and security arrangements.

A second deadline was missed in November last year and pushed back by 100 days, prompting the US to recall its ambassador and impose sanctions on senior officials for their role in perpetuating the conflict.

Against the lingering stand-off and a battered economy, South Sudanese said they hoped for a quick resolution.

“The decision by President Salva Kiir to revert to 10 states plus three administrative areas gives assurance that peace is closer,” Dhieu William, a Juba resident, told Al Jazeera.

“The two parties have to show a certain degree of commitment to restore peace and win the hearts and minds of South Sudanese,” William said.

For Okuk, the rival sides “have no other desirable alternative available except to compromise and form the new government without further delays, and then carry on with the pending tasks during the transitional period”.

    Boswell agreed.

“A return to war cannot be an option in South Sudan, especially since the two sides stopped fighting over a year ago,” he said.

“Ultimately, South Sudan’s regional neighbours will need to help broker a path forward between both sides to make sure the peace deal holds.”

  • Andre Ayew calls for patience from Swansea fans

Black Stars captain and vice captain for his club side Andre Ayew has urged fan’s of his club to direct their anger towards the senior players in the team and lay off the junior members.

Following Tuesday’s draw at home to Queens Park Rangers, a section of the club’s fans booed off the team after the final whistle.

Andre Ayew that such criticisms can adversely affect the performance of the youngsters in the squad and so they should cut them some slack and blame the more experienced members of the squad.

“We need the fans to help the boys, to help them build their confidence,” Swansea’s top scorer said.

“The only thing I can say as one of the senior players is that we have a lot of young players in the squad.

“They need to be encouraged and pushed. They are going to make mistakes – some are learning and for some it’s a first season in the Championship – so we need to help them.

“We have a few guys who are 19, 20. We will be there to help them – me, Wayne (Routledge) etc.

“We are the ones who take more responsibility. I think if the fans are angry, they should look at us more than the younger ones.”

  • Pogba belongs to Man Utd, not his agent – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has warned Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola that it is the club who will decide the French World Cup winner’s future.
Pogba’s long-time representative has been at loggerheads with the United hierarchy in recent years and angered the Red Devils once more this week by casting fresh doubt on where Pogba will be next season.

Raiola revealed on Thursday that he has already had discussions with Juventus sporting director Pavel Nedved about a possible return to the Italian champions from where Pogba re-joined United for a £89m ($116 million) fee in the summer of 2016.

And Raiola also made it clear that if United fail to qualify for the Champions League, Pogba will want to move to satisfy his ambitions.

But Solskjaer still sees Pogba — who has 18 months left on his contract — as a key part of his future plans.

“I’ve not spoken to Mino that is for sure. And, no, I haven’t sat down and told Paul to tell Mino what he should say. Paul is our player and not Mino’s.”

Pogba, 27 next month, has made only eight appearances for United in an injury-ravaged season.

He will be missing again when United take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday as he makes his way back from ankle surgery.

But Solskjaer insists Pogba is not dragging out his return and is desperate to help United achieve Champions League football, either via the Premier League or by winning the Europa League.

“As a player the last thing you want to be is injured and not be able to contribute to your team. Paul’s a footballer and he wants to play football,” added Solskjaer.

“As a player, I was injured for a long, long time myself so I know what it is like. It’s a difficult period in your career but it is part and parcel of being a player. You are always running the risk of being injured.

“He knows that he has to work hard now to get back to his best because he has been out for so long. It’s a challenge for him to get back to his best.”

United have been offered a lifeline in their quest to return to the Champions League next season with Manchester City’s potential two-season ban from European competition meaning fifth in the Premier League could be enough to qualify.

Solskjaer’s men are languishing in ninth, but can move to within two points of fifth with a third victory over Chelsea this season.

As well as Pogba, Marcus Rashford will also be absent for another few weeks, placing a heavy burden on deadline-day loan signing Odion Ighalo to score the goals that can haul United up the table.

Ighalo has had a far from ideal start to his United career. The Nigerian joined up with the United squad for the first time on Sunday after a two-week precautionary quarantine following his arrival from Shanghai Shenua.

However, Solskjaer has dangled the carrot of a permanent move to Ighalo’s boyhood club should be impress between now and the end of the season.

“It’s a loan but when you are in the door here and if you impress it gives you a chance,” said Solskjaer. “That is exactly the same for anyone who signs, if it is permanent or a loan.

“If you impress as a player and as a person, if you can help this group improve, of course there is a chance that we will look at extending things.”

The RuffTown artiste and three other persons, according to reports, were on board a Jeep with registration AS 497-16, travelling from Sunyani to Kumasi when a head-on collision with a VIP bus heading towards Sunyani from Kumasi occurred.

Whereas the occupants of the bus escaped unhurt, only the driver of the Jeep whose names was given as Chartey Oko Pinehad, survived the accident.

Ebony, who was billed to travel to Belgium for a show, and later embark on an European tour, was in Sunyani to visit her mother who had returned from the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile Pokuaa is set to release two songs Wope Hwe and Somebody Dey on March 6.

  • Christian Coleman comes close to breaking 60m world record

American sprinter Christian Coleman came close to breaking his own world record after winning the 60m at the USATF Indoor Championships in New Mexico.

Despite stumbling out of the blocks, Coleman, 23, clocked 6.37 seconds to beat Marvin Bracy and Brandon Carnes.

Coleman equalled the second-fastest time in history behind his own record of 6.34 seconds, set in 2018.

“I felt pretty good,” the 100m world champion said.

“I thought I had a shot at the record.”

Coleman, who is favourite to win 100m gold at this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo, added: “I think I could have executed my start a lot better.

“But we haven’t done a lot of speed work, so this gives me a lot of confidence going into the outdoor season.”

  • ‘United by Emotion’: Tokyo 2020 unveils Games motto

Tokyo 2020 organisers on Monday rolled out the motto for this year’s Olympics, “United by Emotion”, which they said reflected the “universal values” and “unifying power of sport”.

“Crowds of spectators who do not know each other prior to the Games will come together and learn that there is more that unites them than divides them,” Tokyo 2020 said as it unveiled the motto.

The official Olympic motto is “Citius, Altius, Fortius” or “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, but each host city chooses its own motto to accompany that edition of the Games.

London’s motto in 2012 was “Inspire a Generation”, whereas Athens in 2004 went for “Welcome Home” — a nod to the birthplace of the Games in Olympia.

Less well-received was Sochi, which plumped for “Hot. Cool. Yours”, sparking derision in some quarters.

Tokyo said the motto would be beamed onto the Skytree tower in the Japanese capital to raise awareness as it will be seen for miles around.

The opening ceremony will be on July 24 and organisers have stressed there is no discussion about changing this date despite the coronavirus crisis hitting global transport.

Tokyo 2020 roll-outs have not always been smooth. In September 2015, the Games logo was ditched after accusations of plagiarism.

Designer Olivier Debie said the design was stolen from his logo for a Belgian theatre and threatened court action before officials withdrew the emblem, saying it “no longer has public support”.

  • Stop water pollution, pay bills to get constant water supply GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has reiterated its call on the public to desist from polluting water bodies in the country and pay their bills to get constant flow of water supply to their homes and offices.

According to the Director of Media and Public Relations of GWCL, Stanley Martey, it costs the company huge sum of monies to treat polluted waters for consumption which affects effective service delivery and leads to increment in tariffs.

“Our river bodies are been polluted, who are polluting the river bodies, it is we the citizens. Now pollution of river bodies has an impact on the volumes of water that we extract for treatment, for consumption and so, if you pollute, the result is, we are unable to produce enough. It affects you the public or the consumer so our expectation is that we do our things right, let us stop polluting our river bodies so that we can have very good water extract and treat it for the people. Now if you pollute it, apart from that, the volumes will drain, it also makes cost of production very expensive which could eventually affect our tariffs” Mr Martey stated.

Mr. Martey, said this in Ho, at a year Performance Improvement Programme (PIP) contract signing between the GWCL and the State Interest and Government Authority (SIGA), formerly State Enterprise Commission.

He advised customers of the GWCL to pay their bills regularly and desist from illegal connections since such activities do not auger well for the growth of the company.

“If you also do not pay your bills regularly and promptly the way you should, it will also affect us because we need money to invest back into the system. So, if the little that we have to use in investing into the system so that we could treat you well or we could serve our customers well, and the money is not coming how are we going to serve you? So, the consumer also has a role to play by paying his bill’s promptly and regularly,” he stated.

Mr Martey further stressed that “you have another role by refusing to involve yourself in malpractices against the company, like illegal connections, bypasses and indiscriminate use of water. If you are paying for water it doesn’t also mean you should just use it unnecessarily because if you do that, it affects the pressure in the line and it affects the next consumer.”

The Managing Director of the Company, Mr. Clifford A. Braimah took the participants through presentation on Performance Improvement plans including good working attitudes towards customers, how to identify flaws and solve it.

  • Govt must account for all 900 seized excavators NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked the government to account for all excavators and ammunition seized during the Stop Galamsey Campaign.

According to the Communications Director of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, the government had seized 900 excavators during the campaign.

He cited figures in the 2020 budget presented in Parliament to support his claim.

Addressing a press conference on the banks of River Pra at Twifo Praso in the Central region, Mr. Gyamfi challenged the government to make a public presentation on the state of the items.

“The NDC demands that the Akufo Addo government as a matter of urgency should fully account for all items seized as listed in paragraphs 801 of the 2020 budget statement presented to the House of Parliament.”

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press if you check paragraph 801, it says government at the time had seized 900 excavators, not 500. 500 caterpillars are missing but we were told 900 had been seized at paragraph 801 of the budget statement. Also, it is indicated there that a total of 2,079 weapons and ammunition have been seized from illegal miners and 4,045 other mining equipment confiscated from illegal miners have also been seized. We are demanding that the government holds a public exhibition of these seized excavators.”

    Missing excavators and arrest

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng. disclosed recently that most of the excavators that were seized from illegal miners had vanished.

He subsequently petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the suspended First Vice Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party, Horace Ekow Ewusi over his alleged involvement in the missing earth-moving equipment.

Ekow Ewusi was contracted by the government to cart excavators and other vehicles and pieces of equipment seized by Operation Vanguard to designated areas for safekeeping.

So far, six persons arrested over the disappearance of the missing equipment have been granted bail.

The six, including Ekow Ewusi, have been cautioned with the offence of stealing and abetment to stealing.

It will be recalled that at the peak of the fight against illegal mining between 2017 and 2018, about 500 earth-moving machines were seized by the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry.

The then sector Minister, John Peter Amewu who sanctioned the seizure directed them to be parked at the premises of the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

  • US Hails Senegal as ‘Anchor of Democracy’ in West Africa

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Senegal, where he will hold talks with President Macky Sall focused on strengthening security ties and promoting deeper economic cooperation.

The U.S. officially recognized Senegal as an independent state in 1960, and the two countries have forged a close relationship over the past six decades of diplomatic ties. Senior State Department officials have praised Senegal as a role model for democratic institutions, stability and tolerance in West Africa.

“We see Senegal as an anchor of democracy and linchpin of security for West Africa,” said Pompeo. The U.S. regards Senegal as a critical ally in U.S. efforts to advance peace and security in West Africa and worldwide.

Washington has obligated more than $106 million in security assistance to support Senegal’s security institutions since 2014. The U.S., via the Departments of State and Defense, helps train and equip the Senegalese military and police to counter the evolving threats of regional terrorism and cross-border violence that spills over from the Sahel region.

The Defense Department is conducting a global force review and has indicated there likely will be a reduction, but not a complete withdrawal, of U.S. forces from Africa. Ahead of Pompeo’s visit, Sall said a drawdown of American troops from Africa would be a mistake, and it would be “misunderstood” by African leaders.

The United States is the largest bilateral health donor in Senegal, with approximately $60 million in bilateral health funding in 2019 to support maternal and child health, nutrition, and efforts to combat malaria and HIV/AIDS.

‘The West is Winning,’ Pompeo Tells China, Russia The US secretary of state responded to criticism of US policies

After leaving Senegal late Monday, Pompeo will travel to Luanda, Angola, and then Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He also will visit Saudi Arabia and Oman before returning to Washington after his nine-day trip.

In Luanda, he will meet with President Joao Lourenco and Foreign Minister Manuel Augusto to reaffirm U.S. support for Angola’s anti-corruption and democratization efforts.

In Addis Ababa, Pompeo will meet with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Sahle-Work Zewde to discuss joint efforts to promote regional security and to support Ethiopia’s political and economic reform agenda. Additionally, he will meet with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and give a speech.

The chief U.S. diplomat began his trip at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, where he met with a number of foreign leaders, including Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani. A senior State Department official told reporters a reduction in violence deal has been reached with the Taliban, although the terror group needs to show it can deliver on throttling back the suicide bombings and rocket attacks.

  • Youre not happy NPP government is performing – Nana B clashes with Pratt over 1D1F

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Youth Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B on Friday’s edition of Peace FM’s morning show ‘kokrokoo’ programme, decided to list ten factories under the One District One Factory (1D1F) programme.

The mention of the $20million Integrated Compost and Recycling Plant Limited by Waste Management Expert, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, however, brought an altercation in the studio as the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr debunked the assertion that the plant was constructed under the ‘One District One Factory’ programme.

Kwesi Pratt insisted that he was at the commissioning of the plant and that nothing of a ‘One District One Factory’ programme collaboration was mentioned.

“The statement they made at the inauguration I still have it,” Mr. Pratt said.

Henry Nana Boakye in reaction criticised Kwesi Pratt for always not being satisfied with anything the ruling NPP government does.

“You are not happy I am mentioning this but it is not my fault, you are not happy, I know . . . I know you are not happy the government is performing . . . you are not excited one bit,” he intimated, a statement the renowned journalist described as ‘unfair’.

According to Kwesi Pratt it is not fair for Nana B to be talking to him like that.

“This is most unfair . . . how can you talk like that, how can you talk like that, it is not fair to be talking to me like that my friend . . . it’s not correct . . . you’re sitting on radio and doing this,” Mr. Pratt fumed.

However, host Kwami Sefa Kayi stated that Zoomlion actually registered the plant under the ‘One District One Factory’ initiative as to tap into the incentives that come with it.

  • DVLA strikes Gold

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has made a windfall from its new vehicle plate management system.

The authority had recorded over 60% increase in the number of DV plates distributed between January 2 and February 7, 2020, five weeks after adding security features in the form of holographic stickers into the DV plate administration, a source at the DVLA told the media.

The DV plate is normally given to owners of new and unregistered vehicles who are in the process of repairing their vehicles or preparing them for sale to third parties. Until the introduction of these security upgrades, however, the process was largely insecure and prone to counterfeiting and theft.

The security upgrades on the DV Trade plates included optical security features such as micro-text and laser readable hidden images, creating difficult-to-counterfeit labels that also allowed for critical information such as serial numbers to be read with the naked eye, the media was told.

From January to December last year the DVLA generated less than GH¢4.0 million from the sale of 15,544 DV plates.

Management suspected that there were weaknesses and massive leakages in the current DV plate administration and decided to introduce extra security features together with robust management software for the distribution of the DV trade plates, the source said.

Between January 2 and February 7, 2020 of the upgrade, five weeks, the authority has distributed about 25,000 DV plates, pointing to expected revenue of over GH¢6.0 million representing an increase of over 60% over total plates distributed between January and December, 2019.

This massive improvement, according to the authority, is a justification to continuous investments in innovation. The DVLA has encouraged the general public to desist from patronizing services from unauthorized persons and purchase their DV licenses and other driver and vehicle related services directly from the authority or its registered representatives to avoid falling victim to criminal activities. In addition, all DV plates issued by the authority are verifiable. Clients who are in doubt of the DV plates in their possession may visit the nearest DVLA office for authentication the source advised.

According to the authority, motor vehicle license plates and for that matter DV plates are critical elements in ensuring vehicle registration security hence the need to innovate.

“They are essentially the identity card of a vehicle and it is important to ensure the authenticity of these plates and to protect them against counterfeiting and theft something which was rampant until the innovation which has stopped the malpractice,” it stated.

The feat the DVLA explained to DAILY GUIDE “is the outcome of a technology using laser-burn information such as serial numbers, into self-destructive chromium-based hologram stickers.

In a related development, the Licence Plate Manufacturers Association has commended the leadership of the DVLA for sustaining the collaborative relationship between the two organizations.

The association recalled how it had given thought to the improvement of the administration of the DP Plate.

With the application of the enhanced technology the association would have cause to celebrate with the DVLA the chalked feat since after all, for them, it is dream come true.

Berekum Chelsea captain Ali Braimah Foster is on the verge of heading for the exit gates at the Golden City Park in Berekum due to lack of playing time, according to Sunyani-based Nimdi3 FM.
Braimah recently returned from injury but has not been able to beat competition from midfielder Emmanuel Owusu who has taken over the position in the Chelsea team.

The player, who is originally on the books of GloLamp Academy, has had a standoff with the hierarchy of the club and matters reached a melt down when he opted out of the squad that defeated Kotoko in January.

Chelsea will not block his desire to leave the club when he puts in his request to move and Nimdi3 FM have reported that he has opted to make a switch to Accra-based Inter Allies.

  • Medeama midfielder Rashid Nortey makes full recovery and could face Elmina Sharks

Medeama SC coach Samuel Boadu could unleash midfielder Rashid Nortey against Elmina Sharks after his return from injury, according to Sunyani-based Nimdi3 FM.

Nortey, 24, has been absent from the team since the start of the season due to a knee injury.

The workaholic midfielder underwent a surgery to repair a knee injury he suffered before the start of the season.

The return of the midfielder means Samuel Boadu will have shuffle his cards in the middle to accommodate Nortey who is regarded as one of the most talented players by the club.

Nortey operates from the right side of midfield and Boadu believes his return will fortify his options in midfield.

Boadu is expected to gradually release the midfielder into games and could come off the bench as a second-half substitute against Sharks.

  • Coronavirus detection: Upper East region placed on high alert

The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Winfred Ofosu has stated that an effective surveillance system is being put in place in the Region to help detect suspected cases of the Coronavirus otherwise known as COVID-19.

Due to the many entry points that exist in the Region, he noted that it was imperative to ensure that all the entry points are put under very strict surveillance system.

The Upper East Region which is located in the north-eastern corner of the country is bordered to the north by Burkina Faso, the east by the Republic of Togo, the west by Sissala in the Upper West Region and the south by West Mamprusi in the North East Region. The total land area is about 8,842 square kilometers.

Dr Ofosu was speaking at a media briefing at Bolgatanga to announce plans and strategies of the GHS to vaccinate children to protect them from the Type 2 Polio Virus.

The region will vaccinate children between the ages of one year nine months and four years with Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) from Wednesday, February, 19 to Tuesday, February 25, 2020.

He further explained that considering the debilitating effects of the COVID-19, it was important for him to talk about the disease to allay the fears of the public particularly residents of the Region.

The director also stressed that all the health facilities in the Region have been placed on high alert to identify people suspected to have been infected with the disease.

    Vaccination

A total of ninety-six thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine children in the Upper East Region are to be vaccinated to protect them against the Type 2 Polio Virus. It is estimated that over two million children in Ghana have not been protected against the Type two Polio Virus hence they are vulnerable to infection.

    Rationale

Dr Ofosu indicated that the rationale for the selection of that particular age group was because when Ghana switched from Trivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (tOPV) to Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) in April 2016, the IPV should have been introduced immediately after the switch in 2016.

He however noted that due to Global shortage of the IPV vaccines, it was introduced almost two years later in June, 2018. Therefore he said children who were born between April 2016 when the switch took place and June 2018, when the IPV was introduced had no protection against the Type two Polio Virus.

The director intimated that a total of 142 teams made up of health workers and volunteers will be at outreach points, schools, markets, and other vantage points to provide the polio vaccination.

“All eligible children will be given 0.5mls Inactivated Polio Vaccine by intramuscular injection on the right deltoid (shoulder); caregivers with eligible children are hereby entreated to make sure their children are vaccinated within the stipulated period. ”Dr Ofosu further stressed.

He said the IPV has been part of “our routine vaccination programme for more than a year now and is usually given to children at 14 weeks of age”.

He assured caregivers and the general public that “all our vaccines are safe and has over the years reduced vaccine preventable diseases and deaths in the Upper East Region and the country as a whole”.

  • Nana B clashes with Kwesi Pratt over 1D1F

According to Kwesi Pratt Jnr it is not fair for Nana B to be talking to him like that.

  • Television presenter Caroline Flack, dies at 40

Former Love Island host Caroline Flack has been found dead in her London flat, her family have confirmed.

A lawyer for the family said the star had taken her own life.

She stood down from the dating show after she was charged with assaulting her partner in December and was due to stand trial next month.

As well as presenting ITV’s Love Island she had co-hosted The X Factor and won Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

The family said in a statement: “We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today, the 15th of February.

“We would ask that the press respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time and we would ask they make no attempt to contact us and/or photograph us.”

Confirming Saturday night’s Love Island episode will not be broadcast, an ITV spokeswoman said: “Everybody at Love Island and ITV is shocked and saddened by this desperately sad news.

“Caroline was a much loved member of the Love Island team and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.”

Channel 4 announced their TV series called The Surjury, featuring Flack as the host, will no longer air.

Laura Whitmore, who took over presenting Love Island following Flack’s arrest, posted a picture of the pair on Twitter and wrote: “I’m trying to find the words but I can’t.”

From children’s TV to Chicago on stage

Many fans grew up with Flack since her breakthrough co-hosting Saturday morning show TMi with Sam and Mark on CBBC in 2007.

From there, she went on to front Gladiators on Sky One, ITV2’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! spin-off and The Xtra Factor, before moving to The X Factor itself with Olly Murs in 2015.

She cemented her popular appeal when she won Strictly Come Dancing in 2014 with partner Pasha Kovalev.

She is credited with making Love Island one of the biggest shows on British TV and was the one to pick up the award when it won the Bafta for best reality show in 2018.

The same year, Flack made her West End stage debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago and even appeared on the celebrity version of The Great British Bake Off.

    Assault charge

At the time of her death, she had been replaced by Whitmore for the winter series of Love Island.

Flack was charged with assaulting her boyfriend with a lamp after police were called to her home in December.

She pleaded not guilty in court later the same month and was released on bail on the condition she did not contact Burton.

Her solicitor made an application to have these bail conditions lifted, arguing that they remained a couple and wanted to spend Christmas together.

In a statement, her management company criticised the Crown Prosecution Service for pressing ahead with what it called her “show trial”, even after her boyfriend said he did not support it.

Francis Ridley, of Money Talent Management, said: “In recent months Caroline had been under huge pressure because of an ongoing case and potential trial which has been well reported.

“The Crown Prosecution Service pursued this when they knew not only how very vulnerable Caroline was but also that the alleged victim did not support the prosecution and had disputed the CPS version of events.

“The CPS should look at themselves today and how they pursued a show trial that was not only without merit but not in the public interest. And ultimately resulted in significant distress to Caroline.”

In response, the CPS said its “deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Caroline Flack”.

“Given the tragic circumstances, we will not comment on the specifics of this case at this stage,” a spokesperson added.

    TV host with popular appeal

As the Love Island host for four years, the winner of 2014’s Strictly Come Dancing and presenter of hit shows like The X Factor, Flack was one of the most in-demand and well-loved personalities on British TV.

Her bubbly charm and popular appeal made her an ideal choice when Love Island was relaunched in 2015, and she helped make it one of the biggest shows on British TV.

Her profile made her a fixture in the tabloids, and her relationships – including with One Direction star Harry Styles and rumours about Prince Harry – put her on the front pages.

But her career was in the balance after her arrest on suspicion of assault in December, leading her to be replaced on Love Island by Laura Whitmore.

  • Barca gain narrow win over Getefe

Barcelona went level on points with La Liga leaders Real Madrid after grinding out a narrow win over Getafe.

Allan Nyom appeared to put third-placed Getafe ahead but his goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for a foul on Samuel Umtiti.

Antoine Griezmann clipped Barca ahead from Lionel Messi’s excellent first-time pass and Sergi Roberto scored their second from Junior Firpo’s cross.

But Angel Rodriguez’s volley set up a tense finale.

The 32-year-old, who Barcelona are considering signing in an emergency deal, guided home an expert finish from 18 yards out from Jaime Mata’s cross. That was his eighth goal as a substitute this season.

Getafe almost rescued a point but Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s excellent save denied Angel a second.

Under La Liga rules, if a player is out for more than five months, then clubs can apply to sign one player from another La Liga club.

With Ousmane Dembele ruled out for up to six months – and Luis Suarez also sidelined – Barca are looking at several options, including Angel, who has a £7.5m buyout clause.

Messi has now failed to score in four consecutive La Liga appearances for the first time since October 2013 to January 2014 – although he had set up Barca’s previous six league goals before Roberto’s strike.

Real Madrid can re-establish their three-point lead on Sunday when they host Celta Vigo (20:00 GMT

  • Klopp shocked by Man City’s Champions League ban

The German coach was taken back by the news that his side’s rivals will be absent from Europe for the next two seasons.

Jurgen Klopp says he was shocked by the news of Manchester City’s two-year suspension from the Champions League and says he sympathises with coach Pep Guardiola.

City were suspended and fined £25 million ($33m) for breaching Financial Fair Play rules, though the club will appeal against UEFA’s decision.

City said they were “disappointed but not surprised” by the punishment, but Friday’s announcement that Liverpool boss Klopp in shock.

“It was a shock. Complete wow,” Klopp said when asked for his reaction.

“The only thing I can say is about football. What they have done on the football pitch is exceptional. The rest, I don’t know. You believe the people you work with, that’s how it is.

“I really feel for them, Pep and the players, but that is how it is. They can appeal so we will see what happens then. It is obviously serious. But the football they played was exceptional and will always be exceptional.”

While their rivals will be absent from Europe’s premier competition next season, Klopp’s team confirmed their place with a 1-0 win over Norwich on Saturday.

Sadio Mane’s goal just 12 minutes before the end of the clash at Carrow Road stretched their winning streak to 17 top-flight games and their advantage at the top of the table to 25 points.

Klopp was not entirely satisfied with his side’s performance as they gave away too much space against the hosts.

“It was a difficult game for different reasons. The wind, the organisation of the opponent and the way we played first half made it tricky for us,” he told Sky Sports.

“The distance between the line was too big, too early with the long ball, no second player around to collect the second ball. It was not exactly like we wanted to do.

The counter press was not there because we didn’t push up enough, so football. We still had nice situations, good set pieces but not really much more.

“Fabinho coming on was very important for the organisation. Saido was fresh and he helped us to win the game, which was outstanding. I have to watch the goal back but I’m pretty sure it was a fantastic finish.

“I could tell in all the players faces that they weren’t nervous, they were enjoying it, and if one team was going to score it was going to be us. We protected against the counter attack well too. It’s really all about these wonderful football players.

“The gap is so insane, I don’t really understand it. I’m not smart enough. I’ve not had that before. It’s outstanding, it’s so difficult. I go back into the changing room and we chat about the things and then I’m like oh, but congratulations. We won the game, another three points.”
