Create your own Godly TV reality show! Stop criticizing BBNaija- Comedian tells Christians

Nigerian comedian Woli Arole has voiced a strong opinion against Christians who frequently criticize the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality TV show.

The latest season, which premiered on July 28, 2024, has faced backlash from some social media users.

In response, Woli Arole used Instagram to challenge those who label the show as “ungodly.” He suggested that rather than criticizing existing shows, the Christian community should focus on producing their own “godly” reality TV programs.

Arole emphasized that if people want to influence how others behave, they should support such projects financially.

He pointed out that there are wealthy Christian individuals who could invest in these initiatives.

This season of BBNaija introduces a new twist with 28 contestants entering the house in pairs, including friends, family members, and romantic partners.

The show will span 13 weeks, with the winner receiving a grand prize of ₦100 million and an SUV.

I want peace – Mzbel explains why she prefers staying single

Mzbel, the acclaimed songstress, has revealed that she has no intention of ever getting married due to the potential public scrutiny that comes with celebrity marriages. In a candid interview with Fiifi Pratt on Kingdom FM, Mzbel discussed her stance on marriage, explaining that despite her experiences in various romantic relationships, she has chosen to forgo marriage entirely.

She elaborated on her decision, saying, “I have been in several relationships and have even received rings from partners, including the one I currently wear, which was given to me by my partner after the birth of our child. However, this ring is not a symbol of a promise but rather a gesture acknowledging our time together and the birth of our child.”

Mzbel expressed her desire to maintain her peace of mind and avoid the pressures that come with a public marriage. She pointed out that many celebrities face intense scrutiny and unwanted opinions about their personal lives once they are married. “Marriage seems to invite public interference, with people feeling entitled to comment on everything from what you wear to how you live your life,” she noted.

She continued, “For me, marriage is about publicly declaring your commitment, which feels unnecessary. If I find someone who truly loves me and wants to be with me, we don’t need a formal ceremony or public announcement. I value my peace and prefer to keep my personal life private, away from public judgment and expectations.”

I was wrong to think Akufo-Addo would surpass Nkrumah’s legacy – KOD

Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) has sparked significant online discussion following his public endorsement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the lead-up to the 2024 election campaign.

Previously a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), KOD has expressed deep disappointment with the party he once esteemed highly.

KOD had high expectations for the NPP, believing they could surpass the achievements of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. In an interview with CitiFM’s Bernard Avle, KOD recalled his optimism after hearing about the NPP’s plans for the creative sector and the orange economy, saying, “I genuinely believed he would perform well… Yes, I supported him.

With strong conviction, I thought if anyone was going to elevate this country beyond the level set by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, it would have been Nana Akufo-Addo.”

However, in a September 2023 interview, KOD announced his switch to supporting the NDC, citing the current government’s unfulfilled promises.

This shift has led to some acquaintances distancing themselves from him, as KOD shared in a Facebook post on July 20.

Despite this, he emphasized his right to make independent choices, including his political views, and expressed frustration at attempts to sway his beliefs.

Barrage of curses, taunts from enraged crowd as Wyllbee’s alleged ‘married lover’ appears in court

A tense and chaotic scene unfolded at the Akropong District Court as Nana Yaa Nyarko, implicated in the death of musician Wyllbee, faced an agitated crowd. Accused of playing a key role in Wyllbee’s death, which occurred at her residence, Nana Yaa appeared in court alongside several alleged accomplices. Bail was denied, and she was escorted to a police van amidst a volatile atmosphere.

The grieving family and supporters of the late musician made their presence felt, with Nana Yaa enduring a barrage of curses and taunts from the enraged crowd. Concealed by clothing that obscured her face, she was led by police into the van while being hooted and booed by the gathered sympathizers. The case has been adjourned to August 11, 2024.

Background details reveal that Wyllbee was killed in Abuakwa-Tanoso, Ashanti Region, while staying overnight at Nana Yaa Nyarko’s residence, a property owned by her husband’s family abroad. Reports indicate that on July 5, 2024, Wyllbee was confronted by residents after being seen urinating in the compound. Claiming he was visiting Nana Yaa, he was met with her denial, allegedly to protect her marriage from her in-laws.

This denial fueled suspicion and accusations of theft, leading to Wyllbee’s lynching. During the incident, his phone was destroyed with a stone. Unverified reports suggest Wyllbee attempted to break into Nana Yaa’s room with a stone, prompting intervention by neighbors and the ensuing tragedy. The stone used to break the door was recovered and is being used as evidence. Contrary to the deceased’s mother’s claims, Wyllbee’s belongings were found elsewhere on the property, not near Nana Yaa’s residence.

Blame Akufo-Addo, Bawumia for “coins and GHC1” Offertory – Prophet Kumchacha

Prophet Nicholas Osei, also known as Prophet Kumchacha, the founder and leader of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, has attributed the low offerings in his church to the economic policies of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a viral video shared on the EDHUB page, Prophet Kumchacha voiced his frustration with the small amounts his congregation has been able to contribute.

Expressing his disappointment, he remarked, “Today is July 28, 2024, and we were not able to collect any significant offerings. Most contributions were in coins and 1 Ghana cedi notes. With these small amounts, it is challenging to sustain and grow the church.”

However, Prophet Kumchacha also showed understanding towards his congregation, acknowledging the economic hardships they face.

He placed the blame on the government for the current state of the economy, which he believes makes it difficult for church members to give more.

“I don’t blame you too much. I blame Nana Addo and Bawumia. The offering bowl contains mostly coins and only a few notes. The poor economic situation under this administration has left everyone struggling,” he told his congregation.

“Phone me or forget 2024 elections” – Zimbabwean prophet to John Mahama

British-Zimbabwean Prophet Uebert Angel has recently updated his prophecy concerning the 2024 Ghanaian elections, specifically regarding John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Prophet Angel had previously declared that Mahama was divinely chosen to lead Ghana starting in 2025.

However, he stipulated that Mahama must fulfill three conditions to achieve this, including personally calling the prophet.

Three months after this initial prophecy, Prophet Uebert Angel announced that Mahama has met two out of the three required conditions but has yet to make the crucial phone call himself.

During a recent sermon, Angel emphasized that Mahama has only ten days left to make the call, failing which his prospects for returning to power could be jeopardized.

According to Prophet Angel, although someone from Mahama’s team did reach out to him, it is imperative that Mahama himself make the call.

He noted that spiritual protocols are in place and that he cannot be swayed by intermediaries or material incentives.

Angel reiterated that if Mahama does not contact him directly, he will miss out on the prophecy’s fulfillment.

Meanwhile, John Mahama and the NDC officially launched their campaign for the 2024 elections on July 27, 2024, in Tamale.

During the event, Mahama committed to transparency and vowed to prosecute officials from the current administration if elected.

Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), a prominent media personality, has reaffirmed his support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama. This public endorsement, delivered at the 2024 election campaign launch, took many by surprise given KOD’s previous alignment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a candid interview with Bernard Avle of Citi FM, KOD explained that his backing for the NDC is deeply influenced by his personal history. He attributed his political leanings to the values instilled in him by his family and upbringing. “My support for the NDC is a reflection of my background, shaped by my parents and the environment I grew up in,” KOD shared.

At the NDC’s campaign event in Tamale, KOD was an active advocate for Mahama, urging voters to consider the change the party promises. He praised Mahama’s leadership journey and called on Ghanaians to support the needed transformation for the country, stating, “We need the change we’ve been yearning for.”

This shift in allegiance is notable, especially since KOD had previously been a supporter of the NPP. In a September 2023 interview, he had expressed disappointment with the current government’s unmet promises, which prompted his political pivot.

KOD’s new stance has led to some friction, as revealed in a Facebook post from July 20. He acknowledged that his change in political allegiance has led to estrangement from some of his acquaintances but reiterated his right to make his own choices. KOD expressed frustration with attempts to sway his political views, underscoring his commitment to his personal convictions.

Following his public endorsement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, during the 2024 election campaign launch, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) has reaffirmed his support for the party.

KOD’s endorsement came as a surprise to many, given his previous alignment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, he has explained that his support for the NDC is deeply rooted in his personal history and family background.

In a recent interview with Bernard Avle on Citi FM, KOD revealed that his affinity for the NDC stems from his upbringing and family influences. “My support for the NDC is a reflection of my background and the values instilled in me by my family,” he said.

At the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale, KOD actively promoted John Mahama, urging Ghanaians to consider the change they have been seeking. “We need that change that we’ve been yearning for,” he asserted.

The shift in KOD’s political allegiance has sparked some controversy. In a September 2023 interview, KOD announced his switch from the NPP to the NDC, citing dissatisfaction with the current government’s unfulfilled promises.

This transition has led to a distancing by some of his acquaintances, as noted in his Facebook post from July 20. Despite this, KOD has stated that he respects others’ right to their views and stands firm in his own political decisions.

‘You’re not my type’- Efia Odo bluntly rejects Kwaku Manu’s proposal on live TV

During a recent episode of UTV’s United Showbiz, actor Kwaku Manu humorously suggested that he might consider marrying both Efia Odo and Sista Afia. This playful comment led to a direct response from Efia Odo.

Efia Odo wasted no time in clarifying that she has no romantic interest in Kwaku Manu, firmly stating, “I don’t want to be with you or marry you. You’re simply not my type and don’t meet my standards.”

Her candidness surprised the other panelists, prompting Kwaku Manu to ask if that meant she wasn’t open to marriage at all. Efia Odo clarified, “I’m specifically saying I won’t marry you emphasis on you because you’re not my type.”

She went on to outline her ideal partner, saying, “I want someone who is responsible. I believe Kwaku Manu is already married and has children, which is not what I’m looking for. I’m interested in a wealthy man with generational wealth.”

Kwaku Manu responded by mentioning, “I have four kids.”

Host MzGee was taken aback by Efia Odo’s remarks and sought more details. Efia Odo explained, “I’ve been in relationships with men who lacked financial stability before. I supported them, but they still left me.”

When asked about the likelihood of finding a partner who meets all her criteria, Efia Odo confidently asserted, “I’m determined to find someone who fits these qualities because I know my worth and the value I offer.”

Ablakwa implicates Akufo-Addo’s Nigerian son-in-law in ‘shady’ ambulance spare parts deal

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has raised fresh allegations regarding the procurement of ambulances by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

Ablakwa claims that the contracts were awarded to companies with direct ties to the first family. In his latest exposé, he asserts that out of the eight companies involved, six were established between April and September 2017, coinciding with Akufo-Addo’s first year as President.

Ablakwa specifically highlighted Elok Consult and Services Limited, a company incorporated on July 25, 2017. According to him, its directors include Stephen Okoro, purportedly Akufo-Addo’s son-in-law, and Solomon Okereke. Ablakwa suggests that Stephen Okoro is also a business associate of the President’s daughter, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo.

The companies implicated by Ablakwa are Elok Consult and Services Limited, BEFT Engineering Works Limited, Bluemix Company Limited, Prestige Era Company Limited, RDC Company Limited, Luxury World Auto Group Limited, and Quality Suppliers and Builders Company Limited.

He noted that none of these companies have a background in importing ambulances.

Additionally, Ablakwa questioned the financial details of the procurement process. He cited an Auditor-General’s Performance Audit, which stated that the government purchased 307 Mercedes Benz ambulances for $54.3 million.

He argued that at a unit price of $80,000 per ambulance, the total should have been $24.56 million, suggesting an overpayment of nearly $30 million. Even accounting for a 10% insurance premium, which he claims was not paid, the cost would still be grossly inflated by over $27 million.

Ablakwa concluded that the $54.3 million spent could have bought 678 ambulances instead of 307, indicating what he calls a “most criminal” inflation of costs.

Magistrates, judges, police system are all silent over state capture, pathetic – KKD fumes

Ghanaian broadcaster Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, widely known as KKD, has criticized the judiciary and police for their perceived inaction amidst what he terms as state plunder by the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on Joy News on July 29, 2024, KKD refuted allegations that the controversial ‘Agyapadie’ document, which supposedly details a strategic plan to control the Ghanaian economy, is fictitious.

“We have prosecutors, magistrates, judges, and a police system, yet we observe the implementation of the Agyapadie document’s contents while they do nothing, merely twiddling their thumbs, scratching themselves, and laughing.

“The plunder of the state is undeniable. Ignoring it is an act of sabotage against the nation.

“I initially dismissed the document as nonsense, but after observing events over three and a half years, I now see it as the plunderers’ blueprint,” myjoyonline.com quoted him during the interview.

KKD’s comments follow a declaration by the Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, who labeled the ‘Agyapadie’ document as a fabricated attempt to damage the reputation of the Ofori Panin household and the Akyem people.

The Okyenhene’s remarks came after the document, which purportedly outlines a plan for Akyem dominance in various sectors of the Ghanaian economy, gained renewed attention in both traditional and social media.

  • Madina/Adentan: Pedestrians ignore footbridges despite daily knockdowns, arrests

Madina/Adentan: Pedestrians ignore footbridges despite daily knockdowns, arrests

Pedestrian safety continues to be a significant issue on the Madina-Adenta highway in Accra, with many choosing not to use the newly installed footbridges. These bridges were erected in response to deadly accidents, including the tragic death of a West African Senior High School student in 2018, which led to widespread protests.

Despite the completion of the footbridges, a substantial number of pedestrians still prefer to cross the road at unauthorized points, often risking their lives. The preference for using the speedways and other shortcuts persists, with many citing the inconvenience of the footbridges as their main reason. Some pedestrians express frustration over the perceived delay caused by the footbridges, with complaints about slow walkers and the physical effort required to use them.

The situation is further complicated by concerns over accessibility. For some individuals, particularly those with physical ailments such as arthritis or high blood pressure, the stairs and height of the footbridges pose significant challenges.

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Assembly has attempted to enforce the use of these footbridges through fines and arrests, but these measures have not been fully effective. The Municipal Chief Executive, Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, highlighted the dual responsibility of both authorities and citizens in addressing this issue. She noted the substantial expenditure on enforcement personnel, which underscores the ongoing struggle to change pedestrian behavior.

Civil Engineer Joseph Oddei points out that the design of the footbridges may contribute to their underuse. He suggests that factors such as lack of traffic lights and space constraints at certain junctions should have been better addressed in the design process to make the bridges more user-friendly.

Additionally, the footbridges are increasingly being used as makeshift market spaces, which further discourages their use for pedestrian crossing. This situation has exacerbated the problem, with frequent accidents still occurring, particularly at busy intersections like Madina Zongo Junction.

The assembly is actively working on introducing stricter by-laws to enforce the use of footbridges and improve pedestrian safety. While some pedestrians acknowledge the safety benefits of using the footbridges, a concerted effort is needed to address the design flaws and enforcement challenges to ensure that these structures fulfill their intended purpose.

  • Your mismanagement claims against us unsubstantiated, false – SSNIT to Sophia Akuffo

Your mismanagement claims against us unsubstantiated, false – SSNIT to Sophia Akuffo

The Management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has refuted former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo’s recent claims about the mishandling of its hotel properties. In an interview with TV3’s Alfred Ocansey on July 25, Akuffo accused SSNIT management of deliberately devaluing the hotels to facilitate insider deals.

Akuffo alleged that SSNIT’s actions mirrored a broader trend in the public sector, where properties are neglected to reduce their value before being sold off through sweetheart deals. SSNIT responded to these accusations on July 29, calling them “false” and damaging to the Trust’s reputation.

SSNIT countered that rather than neglecting the hotels, it had taken several measures to improve their performance. These included restructuring ownership, introducing private hotel management, and providing financial support for maintenance and capital expenses. Despite these efforts, SSNIT stated that the hotels had continued to underperform, with persistent losses and insufficient returns, leading to the termination of their planned sale.

In its statement, SSNIT emphasized that the allegations of intentional mismanagement were unfounded and detrimental to public trust. The Trust reiterated its commitment to managing its assets responsibly to ensure the long-term viability of the pension scheme.

The controversy surrounding the sale of SSNIT’s shares in the hotels had already led to public outcry and protests. The planned sale of a 60% stake in the hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, faced significant opposition from various stakeholders and labor unions. This opposition led to a suspension of the sale process by the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) for further review.

On July 12, SSNIT announced the termination of the sale, which had been under consideration since 2018. The NPRA had previously confirmed that SSNIT had complied with the necessary procedures, but this did not prevent widespread backlash and subsequent actions by labor unions, including a nationwide strike.

As of now, SSNIT remains focused on managing its assets effectively and addressing any genuine concerns raised by stakeholders.

In a recent Twitter post, Simmons discussed how Zaconut, a startup company, is struggling to launch its high-tech coconut carts in Ghana.

These carts are designed to provide customers with fresh coconut water in a hygienic and convenient manner.

Despite the innovative approach, Zaconut faces significant competition from traditional methods.

Currently, customers can easily access fresh coconut water from vendors who use a cutlass to open coconuts on the spot.

This established method is deeply ingrained in local culture, making it difficult for Zaconut’s modern solution to gain traction.

Another witness added, “We were here just a few minutes ago, and suddenly a crowd gathered. When we approached, we saw a lady between the pillars of the overhead. People were puzzled as to how she got there. Some even speculated she might be a witch. We called the police, but they were unsure how to help, so we contacted the fire service, who then rescued her.”

Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One of the GNFS, Daniel Appiah, explained, “We were on duty when two civilians informed us about a lady stuck at the overpass. One civilian directed us to a space we could use to reach her. We quickly moved our fire engine to the spot and rescued her. After the rescue, she was handed over to the National Ambulance, who checked her vitals and took her to the hospital.”

He also noted that materials such as books, pen drives, and mobile phone cases were found at the scene, suggesting she might not have been alone in residing there.

Portia Ofori, an Advanced CMT at the Circle Ambulance Station, shared that Alima revealed she was living at the overpass with a man and had been discharged from the hospital. Ofori recounted, “Initially, she wasn’t able to speak, and it seemed she was not speaking Twi. We took her to Ridge Hospital, where she still couldn’t talk. I realized she was hungry and promised her food if she answered three questions. She then admitted a man had sent her there and had been sleeping with her. We got her food, and she said she wasn’t sick. We brought her back, gave her some money, and asked her to leave.”

Belinda, the CEO of Chez Amis and a well-known Snapchat personality, has addressed the speculation surrounding her curvaceous figure.

She firmly denies claims that her ample buttocks are the result of plastic surgery.

Belinda explained that her naturally full figure has always been a part of her.

While she hasn’t had surgery specifically for her buttocks, she has undergone other cosmetic procedures.

She underwent liposuction 360, a technique that removes fat from the back and abdomen, and also had breast reduction surgery to alleviate back pain caused by excess breast tissue.

She shared, “People who know me can attest that I’ve always had a sizable rear end.

The liposuction was to address fat in my back and stomach, and the breast reduction was necessary due to discomfort from having too much breast tissue.

Now, my breasts are small enough that I don’t need to wear a bra, which was my goal for comfort.”

Belinda mentioned that her procedures were carried out in Ghana by a well-regarded surgeon in Kumasi, and she praised the results.

“It’s been three years since the surgeries, and my Ghanaian doctor did an outstanding job,” she said.

In a recent comment on her growing influence, Delay remarked, “I think you’re now the ones who control Accra.” To which Belinda responded, “I see it as my time to shine, but like all things, this too shall pass, and someone else will eventually take the lead.”

Bawumia lies everywhere, even on the pulpit, he has no limits -X user

An X user named Listowell Mensah has strongly criticized Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The critique centers around a past video in which Dr. Bawumia promised to address the challenges faced by taxi drivers due to the rise of ride-hailing services like Uber.

In the video, Dr. Bawumia, speaking from a pulpit, assured that measures would be implemented to support taxi drivers who were struggling as a result of decreasing business from these services.

He pledged that a solution would be forthcoming within months.

However, according to the X user, no significant action has been taken since that promise was made.

Listowell Mensah used this video as evidence to accuse Dr. Bawumia of failing to deliver on his promises and being dishonest, even in a public and prominent setting.

2024 Elections: I’d love for Mahama’s return – Sweet Adjeley

US-based Ghanaian chef Sweet Adjeley expressed her desire to see former President John Mahama return to the Jubilee House, citing road infrastructure as her primary reason. During an appearance on the Class Morning Show on Class 91.3 FM, Prince Benjamin (PB) asked Sweet Adjeley who she wanted to see win the upcoming Ghanaian elections in December.

While she had previously chosen Kamala Harris for the US, describing Trump’s tenure as frightening for her family, her preference for Ghana was clear.

“Geez!” Sweet Adjeley exclaimed, recognizing the gravity of the question. “I’d love that [President Mahama returns],” she finally said, criticizing President Nana Akufo-Addo’s handling of road maintenance since taking office in 2016.

She highlighted the worsening road conditions in Ghana, using her own experience as an example.

Traveling from Labone to her home in Nungua Barrier, a journey that once took 20 minutes, now exceeds an hour due to prolonged road repairs. “Growing up in Ghana, our roads have never been this bad,” she lamented.

Sweet Adjeley emphasized that her opinion was not influenced by any personal connection or financial incentives from Mahama. “I don’t know him. He doesn’t give me money. None of the people gives me money,” she clarified.

The celebrity chef, who resides in New Jersey and is also a medical officer, noted the anxiety she now feels while driving on Ghanaian roads. “I get anxiety when I am on the road, and it wasn’t like that for me before,” she added.

Ghana’s upcoming elections on December 7 will see voters choosing a president, vice president, and parliamentary representatives.

Jobs are more important than a credit scoring system – Kwaku Manu to Bawumia

Ace Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has raised concerns about the timing of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer’s proposal to implement a credit rating system in Ghana.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz program, Manu acknowledged the potential benefits of such a system but emphasized that the country faces more urgent issues.

Manu argued that improving employment and wages should take precedence.

He pointed out that without jobs, Ghanaians cannot build the positive credit histories needed to benefit from a credit system.

“Jobs are more important than a credit scoring system because if you are unemployed, you can’t generate positive credit ratings to borrow things. Elsewhere, for you to get a credit card, you must be gainfully employed. Your wealth status determines the limit of your credit rating,” he said.

Manu also highlighted the disparity between employed and unemployed individuals in Ghana, noting that more graduates are without jobs than with them.

He added that the high cost of living puts many people in debt, urging the government to address these issues for the overall benefit of the populace.
“Among many benefits, the operation of a credit scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars and mobile phones, and obtain loans at lower interest rates,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

Dr. Bawumia, who is campaigning to become Ghana’s president, has made the credit scoring system a key promise.

In a Facebook post, he outlined the country’s progress, including the issuance of the Ghana Card, database integration, and enhanced financial inclusion through mobile money interoperability.

Dr. Bawumia argued that these advancements pave the way for a credit scoring system, which would help Ghanaians purchase essentials and secure loans at lower interest rates.

June 2024: Crude oil prices remain stable – Ernest Addison

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, reported mixed trends for Ghana’s major export commodities on the international market. Cocoa price futures showed a recovery, increasing by 1.1 percent in June 2024 to reach US$9,022.6 per tonne, after a 19.2 percent decline in May 2024.

Crude oil prices remained stable, averaging US$83.01 per barrel in June 2024. Conversely, spot gold prices saw a slight drop of 1.1 percent, averaging US$2,325.34 per fine ounce in June 2024.

The country’s trade balance saw an improvement in the first half of the year, primarily due to higher exports compared to imports.

Dr. Addison announced a trade surplus of US$1.81 billion for this period, up from US$1.60 billion in the first half of 2023. Exports rose by US$1.01 billion to US$9.23 billion, while imports increased by US$884.5 million to US$7.42 billion.

Dr. Addison also highlighted the banking sector’s recovery from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme’s impact. As of the end of June 2024, total banking sector assets had grown by 33.3 percent to GH¢323.1 billion, compared to a 21.2 percent growth at the end of June 2023. Indicators of profitability, liquidity, and efficiency showed improvement as well.

“The trade surplus improved to US$1.81 billion in the first half of the year, compared to the surplus of US$1.60 billion recorded in the corresponding period of 2023. Total exports increased by US$1.01 billion to US$9.23 billion, while imports rose by US$884.5 million to US$7.42 billion,” Dr Addison said at the 119th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Friday, July 26.

The Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), adjusted for reliefs, remained at 14.3 percent from June 2023 to June 2024. Without reliefs, the CAR was reported at 10.6 percent in June 2024, up from 7.4 percent in June 2023.

Despite these gains, Dr. Addison noted that elevated credit risk remains a challenge for the sector’s recovery. The Nonperforming Loans (NPL) ratio increased to 24.1 percent in June 2024 from 18.7 percent in June 2023.

Dr. Addison emphasized that sustained profitability, adherence to recapitalization plans, and strict credit underwriting standards are crucial for the banking sector to achieve full recovery and resilience.

“Despite improvements in the banking sector’s performance, elevated credit risk poses a threat to the sector’s recovery process,” he noted.

“The consistent rebound in profits, adherence to recapitalisation plans, and enforcement of strict credit underwriting standards will help ensure that banks remain on the path to full recovery and resilience,” Dr Adison said.

Tomato farmers in Kwahu Hwehwe lament low purchasing prices offered by market women

A video circulating on social media captures the farmers of Kwahu Hwehwe lamenting the low purchasing prices offered by market women.

According to the farmers, a significant portion of their tomato harvest is being bought at very low prices despite the large quantities available.

The farmers lament that, irrespective of their pricing demands, they are at a disadvantage because they do not possess any power.

One farmer, granting an interview, lamented that failing to adhere to the market women’s demands leaves their produce to waste.

He is, therefore, calling on the government to come to their aid to address the issue.

“We are at a disadvantage. We harvest a lot of produce for little money. We don’t know what is happening. When we refuse to sell to them at such low prices, our harvest goes to waste. We are pleading with the government to come to our aid,” the farmer stated.

This is how Mahama used Kennedy Agyapong’s words to ‘lash’ Bawumia at NDC’s campaign launch

To emphasize the critical nature of Ghana‘s current economic challenges and his capability to resolve them, National Democratic Congress flagbearer John Dramani Mahama referenced statements from prominent officials of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

During the launch of the NDC’s campaign on July 27, 2024, Mahama cited remarks by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, to illustrate the nation’s dire situation and argue for his leadership in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections.

Mahama highlighted Kennedy Agyapong’s viral statement from an interview with KSM, saying, “A member of the New Patriotic Party, a friend, and a former colleague MP, said, ‘It’s not Ghana that needs change, it’s change that needs Ghana.’

That is Honourable Kennedy Agyapong.” He connected this to the Afrobarometer survey, where over 80% of Ghanaians felt the country was heading in the wrong direction, underscoring the necessity for change on December 7.

Additionally, Mahama recalled President Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign promise, suggesting that electing Akufo-Addo was a mistake that shouldn’t be repeated with Bawumia, who is campaigning with a similar ‘try me’ message.

He warned against wasting another four years under the same leadership, emphasizing that the youth cannot afford further delays in progress.

Mahama asserted his readiness to guide the country onto the right path, arguing that the next four years are pivotal.

He expressed confidence in his ability to reset Ghana’s trajectory, drawing on his experience and expertise.

“Several years ago, somebody came and said ‘Try me,’ and the result is what we are seeing today. Now, another person is repeating the same message. The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste,” Mahama concluded.

E-levy must be removed with or without the reintroduction of road tolls – Professor Asuming

Professor Patrick Asuming from the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) has called for the removal of the e-levy, describing it as a detrimental tax.

He expressed skepticism about the government’s intention to reintroduce road tolls, noting that similar promises in the past have not been fulfilled.

Speaking on TV3’s “The Key Points” on July 27, Professor Asuming stated, “The e-levy is a bad tax that should be removed with or without the road tolls. I am very suspicious that these road tolls will be back. In 2023, they stated they were going to reintroduce some tolls that were removed, but we didn’t hear anything about it. Now you are saying this. I am not sure there is a real intention to bring back the road tolls. It was a bad idea to remove the road tolls.”

The government ceased road toll collections in 2021 following the introduction of the e-levy, which was intended to replace the tolls.

However, the e-levy has not met expectations, prompting the government to reconsider road tolls. The Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, announced that Cabinet has approved a framework to reintroduce tolls by 2025.

This announcement was made during the mid-year budget review in Parliament on July 23.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, also emphasized the need to bring back road tolls to fund infrastructure projects.

In June, he noted that the government lacks sufficient funding for infrastructure and suggested that road tolls could provide a necessary revenue stream.

He remarked, “Let us go back to a system of broad-based road tolls. The tolling system has to come back, and I think it will come back. It is a fundamental mistake of the government to place all road projects on the budget. The government doesn’t have enough money and the private sector has to be brought in.”

In summary, the government is considering the reintroduction of road tolls in 2025 due to the underperformance of the e-levy, despite past unfulfilled promises and ongoing doubts about their commitment to this plan.

Yam Traders at Kokomba market lament sharp increases in prices

Yam traders at the Kokomba market are deeply concerned about the recent sharp increase in yam prices, which they say is straining their livelihoods.

They have called on the government to take action to address the issue.

The market is typically bustling, with young men unloading yams from trucks arriving from the north, and young women carrying purchased yams for traders and consumers.

Despite the well-organized display of yams sorted by size and type, the traders are noticeably disheartened.

Jabil Yookum, a yam trader with 20 years of experience, noted that prices have skyrocketed. She explained that a bag of yams, which cost GHC1,000 in 2023, now sells for GHC3,000. “A hundred pieces of yam now cost between GHC3,000 and GHC4,000,” she said. “The prices have really gone up this year.”

Traders attribute the price hike to various factors. Some blame changing weather patterns, while others point to rising petroleum prices, which have increased transportation costs.

Madam Jane, another trader, lamented that her daily sales have plummeted as customers buy yams less frequently due to the higher prices.

Similarly, Rosina Amponsah, who buys yams to sell as fried yam, expressed concern that she might have to stop her business due to the soaring costs.

Despite these challenges, there is still a sense of hope among the traders and consumers at the Kokomba yam market.

They are optimistic that the onset of rains and a potential reduction in fuel prices could help alleviate the current situation.

Video: ‘Floccinaucinihilipilification’ – Dr. Stephen Amoah stuns colleagues MPs with new word

The Deputy Minister of Finance, Stephen Amoah, amused Members of Parliament and the Speaker of Parliament with his use of the word ‘Floccinaucinihilipilification’ during a session.

While discussing a report on the Songor Salt Mining project by Electrochem Ghana Limited, Amoah cautioned MPs against politicizing the report and inciting the youth, describing such actions as ‘Floccinaucinihilipilification’ (meaning a worthless exercise).

This term prompted laughter among the MPs and a request from the Speaker for its definition, which Amoah provided.

Expressing sympathy for the people of Ada, Amoah emphasized that they should not be incited against the government.

He also mentioned that companies licensed to mine in the area should be required to improve the welfare of the Ada community by creating job opportunities.

2024 Elections: I’m pleading with pastors to stop giving prophecies – Ayariga cautions

All People’s Congress flagbearer, Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has urged religious leaders to refrain from making predictions about the upcoming presidential election.

Speaking on JoyNews Upfront, Ayariga highlighted the potential for chaos if such prophecies fail to materialize.

He pointed out that many Ghanaians hold their religious leaders in high regard, and prophecies about election outcomes could significantly influence voters.

Ayariga stressed the importance of a peaceful election process, free from religious interference, and urged pastors, imams, chiefs, and other leaders to avoid making election-related predictions.

Ayariga stated, “In this crucial election of 2024, I’m pleading with pastors to stop predicting who will become the next president of Ghana. If a prophecy about a candidate doesn’t come true, it could lead to unrest. People might claim the results have been manipulated. We need a peaceful election without such interference. Let every Ghanaian vote and let the political leaders campaign. The true will of the people will prevail, without the influence of prophecies.”

This is my first time meeting this man, I like you – Young man ‘converts’ after meeting Bawumia

A young man was overwhelmed with emotion when he had the chance to hug Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a door-to-door campaign in the Upper West Region.

Dr. Bawumia, who had been touring the region for a week, stopped to interact with the young man and others present.

Seeing the young man’s eagerness for a handshake, Dr. Bawumia offered him a warm hug instead, making the moment even more special.

The vice president also posed for photos with the young man, who wanted to capture the memory.

The young man, initially planning to vote for another candidate, confessed that this encounter converted him to believe in the NPP’s “It Is Possible” campaign for the 2024 election.

He expressed his newfound admiration, saying, “This is my first time meeting this man, and I like you. It is possible. Today, I will sleep like I’m in Heaven. I was negative, but now it has become positive.”

During his campaign stop in Jirapa, Dr. Bawumia addressed comments made by John Mahama, who claimed the NPP would not choose a Northerner as their flagbearer.

Dr. Bawumia countered this, stating that despite skepticism, he became the NPP’s leader by God’s grace.

He highlighted that Mahama had previously said the NPP should elect Bawumia if they wanted Northern votes.

Now, with his leadership, Dr. Bawumia urged the North to support him in the upcoming election.
