Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic books a place in the fourth round of Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, overcame an early setback against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin to secure his spot in the tournament’s fourth round.

Initially dropping the first set, Djokovic rallied to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in a challenging match on Centre Court.

Despite a slow start, Djokovic, who boasts 24 Grand Slam titles, gradually found his rhythm, particularly after a break where the roof closure aided his game.

Sporting a knee support from recent surgery, Djokovic broke Popyrin in the fourth game of the second set and continued to dominate, even achieving his 1,000th ace at Wimbledon during the match.

The contest saw both players engage in a brief lighthearted moment when fans celebrated England’s football victory, with Djokovic mimicking a football kick and Popyrin joining in the fun.

Djokovic praised Popyrin’s strong performance, acknowledging his opponent’s powerful serve and forehand.

Next, Djokovic will face Holger Rune, who also secured a hard-fought victory in five sets, setting up an intriguing matchup in the next round.

I’m not a part of Chef Association of Ghana or any other body, I lied – Chef Smith

Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, known as Chef Smith, recently admitted in an interview to fabricating a Guinness World Record certificate.

He confessed to modifying a certificate found online from the Guinness World Records website, inserting his own details into it.

Chef Smith, who claimed long-time inspiration from Guinness World Records, explained his actions by stating, “They have numerous certificates on their website, so I simply chose one and edited it with my own name.”

He also clarified that he is not affiliated with the Ghana Chef Association or any other professional body.

“I’m not a member of the Ghana Chef Association. I do not belong to any organization. Everything is fake and a lie,” Chef Smith admitted.

This revelation follows a statement from Guinness World Records (GWR), which stated they were unaware of Smith’s attempt to break the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

Mr. Agbovi, the General Secretary of the Chefs Association, in an interview with GH One TV, commented on the controversy, saying, “You can call him a chef because he is a professional, but he is not a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.” He also expressed disappointment over the fake certificate and the unauthorized use of their logo.

During a press briefing at La Palm Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024, Chef Smith announced he had set a record for the longest individual cooking marathon, claiming to have cooked continuously for 820 hours. His manager, Benny, supported this claim, citing an alleged confirmation email from Guinness World Records (GWR).

However, GWR promptly clarified that they had no record of any application or attempt by Chef Smith to set a record. Madalyn Biefield, GWR’s Public Relations Manager, stated unequivocally, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold a GWR title, and that certificate is not authentic.”

The incident has sparked public outrage as it became evident that the certificate Chef Smith presented was likely fraudulent.

However, despite Chef Smith’s assertions and claims from his manager of receiving a confirmation email from Guinness World Records (GWR), GWR clarified that they had no record of any such application or attempt from Chef Smith.

This revelation led to public backlash, as it became evident that the certificate was likely not genuine.

Netherlands defeats Turkey to secure a semi-final spot in 2024 Euros

The Netherlands staged a comeback to defeat Turkey and secure a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals against England.

Turkey initially took the lead with Samet Akaydin heading in Arda Guler’s cross, celebrating fervently with the Turkish fans.

However, an own goal by Mert Muldur under pressure from Cody Gakpo helped the Dutch level the score.

The Netherlands, who had struggled in the first half, improved significantly after the break. Stefan de Vrij equalized with a header, and substitute Wout Weghorst’s defensive efforts and offensive presence were pivotal.

Weghorst’s influence was immediate, as he bolstered the Dutch attack and provided crucial defensive support.

Despite Turkey nearly doubling their lead when Guler’s free-kick hit the post, they failed to capitalize on their chances.

As the Netherlands held on, goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made a crucial save, and De Vrij blocked several attempts. Turkey’s substitute Bertug Yildirim was sent off for dissent, adding to their woes.

The match ended with Dutch players celebrating their hard-fought victory, while Turkey reflected on their missed opportunity to advance.
The Netherlands will now face England in Dortmund, with the winner set to play either France or Spain in the final.

He claimed to have cooked for 802 hours and 25 minutes, declaring himself the new record holder at a press conference at La Palm Hotel in Accra on July 2, 2024.

However, Guinness World Records (GWR) quickly refuted his claim, stating that the certificate he presented was fake and that the actual record holder is Alan Fisher from Ireland. Madalyn Bielfield, GWR’s PR Manager, confirmed, “He does not hold the GWR title and that is not our certificate.”

In the wake of the scandal, Chef Smith publicly apologized to Ghanaians, including the former First Lady Lordina Mahama and the president, for his deceitful actions.
Serwaa Amihere did not take this lightly as she called him a scammer.

“So you admit you are a scammer. You are a scammer because how can you do this,” Serwaa Amihere stated.

Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as Kwame A Plus, has criticized the Ghanaian media for their lack of thoroughness in reporting on Chef Smith’s supposed Guinness World Record attempt.

Speaking during a panel discussion on UTV, A Plus expressed his disappointment at the media’s failure to adhere to basic journalistic standards.

The independent parliamentary candidate for Gomoa Central emphasized the importance of the media apologizing for disseminating incorrect information. He questioned why journalists did not verify the legitimacy of Chef Smith’s claim before reporting on it, pointing out that even when objections were raised by figures like Bongo Ideas, they were dismissed by the media.

“When I asked Nana Boroo, he said the guy claimed to have received a call from Guinness World Record. The Ghanaian media does no research, no investigation. How can the whole media allow this guy to dribble them? All those media houses have to apologize to Ghanaians,” A Plus asserted.

This critique follows Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Chef Smith, publicly apologizing for misleading the public. In an emotional video circulating on social media, Chef Smith, accompanied by two distressed women, expressed deep remorse for his actions.

“I have committed a great sin, and I don’t even deserve to live anymore, but please forgive me and my entire family. I have sinned against the entire nation,” he confessed in Twi. Chef Smith admitted that although he applied to break the record for the longest cooking marathon, he did not receive approval from Guinness World Record but proceeded with the attempt regardless.

“I registered, but I wasn’t approved. I just wanted an opportunity to show the world the talent God has given me. I wanted the opportunity to show the world my passion for cooking and gain fame. I am sorry,” he tearfully admitted.

In his apology, Chef Smith specifically mentioned the president, the vice president, former president Mahama and his wife, as well as Nana Boroo.

Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, popularly known as Chef Smith, was detained by the Ghana Police Service shortly after announcing his new Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon.

The arrest took place just before a scheduled press conference.

Benny, Chef Smith’s manager, reported that a group, including musician Nana Boroo, approached the team claiming to have been part of the initial support group for Chef Smith’s cooking marathon.

“We were about to start our press conference at La Palm Royal Beach when a group, led by Nana Boroo, approached us,” Benny explained on Hitz FM. “

They claimed to have supported Chef Smith during his Cook-a-thon. Initially, we agreed to discuss the matter at the reception, but they later insisted on speaking with Chef Smith privately in their car, which we did not agree to.”

This disagreement escalated, leading to the involvement of the police and Chef Smith’s subsequent detention.

Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, Okudzeto Ablakwa, has once again accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of involvement in capturing state properties. In a tweet, he alleged that lands belonging to Ghana Prisons are under threat of state capture by individuals associated with the Vice Presidency.

In a video addressing concerns about these claims, Ablakwa queried Interior Minister Henry Quartey about his knowledge of ongoing actions. Minister Quartey, however, denied any official notice of demolitions and defended the integrity of the individuals involved, noting their reputable standing and separation of private business from political roles.

Minister Quartey explained that redevelopment plans for Ghana Prisons Service barracks aim to alleviate severe living conditions endured by junior officers and their families. He stated that proposals for redevelopment have been under consideration for over 20 years and that a recent proposal was endorsed by both the prison officers and council service.

Responding to allegations, Ablakwa questioned the motives behind the redevelopment and potential benefits to developers involved. He cited conflicting statements from government bodies regarding land allocation and urged alignment between ministries to protect Ghana Prisons’ property rights.

He specifically pointed to Professor Kweku Appiah Adu, a senior advisor to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, alleging his involvement in actions against the prison service’s interests, including alleged demolitions and land encroachments. Ablakwa pressed for clarity on government actions to resolve the matter and safeguard state-owned lands.

Sophia Momodu lists reasons Davido shouldn’t have custody of Imade

In the ongoing custody battle between Davido and his first baby mama, Sophia Momodu, Momodu has responded to Davido’s lawsuit seeking joint custody of their daughter, Imade.

The proceedings took place at Justice Bashua’s family court in Yaba, Lagos State on July 5, 2024.

Davido, in his suit filed on April 17, 2024, accused Momodu of obstructing his access to Imade despite fulfilling his parental duties, such as paying school fees and providing financial support. He claimed Momodu’s demands were designed to prevent him from seeing his daughter.

In response, Momodu alleged that Davido had neglected Imade for the past two years, failing to meet his financial responsibilities. Her legal team, led by Anthony SAN, presented six arguments to the court against granting Davido custody:

Davido’s controversial lifestyle attracts negative media attention, potentially exposing Imade to trauma.
Davido’s frequent travel as an artist and the presence of unsavory individuals in his environment may negatively influence Imade.

Momodu advocates for child therapy to bridge the gap caused by Davido’s absence in Imade’s life.

Due to Davido’s career demands and marital status, Momodu questions his ability to provide consistent care.

Momodu expresses concern about Imade’s upbringing in Davido’s household, referencing a past unfortunate incident involving Davido’s son.

Momodu’s stance emphasizes her role in Imade’s upbringing and argues against Davido’s suitability for joint custody based on these grounds.

Momodu’s lawyers filed a counter affidavit alleging that Davido’s home is unsafe for Imade, referencing the tragic death of Davido’s son, Ifeanyi, in 2022.

They argue that Davido’s controversial lifestyle and the circumstances of his son’s death make him unfit for custody.

In response, Davido expressed bitterness at Momodu for bringing up his son’s death in the custody case, stating that it continues to haunt him.

He announced his intention to forego seeking custody of Imade, emphasizing that she will eventually grow up and understand his efforts on her behalf.

Davido clarified that he initially sought joint custody, but he feels misunderstood due to his celebrity status. He concluded by wishing blessings upon others and expressing hope that they never face a similar situation.

Kwasi Appiah’s Sudan side will have an advantage over Black Stars in AFCON qualifiers -Laryea Kingston

Former Ghanaian midfielder Laryea Kingston believes that coach Kwasi Appiah holds a significant advantage ahead of Sudan’s clash with Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Following the recent draw placing Ghana in Group F alongside Sudan, Angola, and Niger, discussions have intensified due to the pairing of current Ghana coach Otto Addo and former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah, now managing Sudan.

Appiah, who led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup and the 2019 AFCON, is seen by Kingston as having an edge due to his deep understanding of Ghanaian football mentality and strategies.

“Kwasi Appiah being Ghanaian gives him a unique insight into our approach to games,” Kingston remarked to 3Sports after the draw. “He understands many positives about Ghanaians and our mindset, making it challenging for us. His familiarity with us could give him an advantage over Otto, who may not be as well-versed with the Sudanese players.”

Kingston’s observations are reinforced by Appiah’s success with Sudan in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Sudan currently leads Group B with 10 points from four matches.

“If I were in Kwasi Appiah’s position now, this would be a game I’d eagerly anticipate,” Kingston continued. “There’s much I would need to demonstrate and prove about my abilities to lead. It promises to be one of the standout matches during Otto’s tenure with the Black Stars.”

The AFCON qualifiers are scheduled from September to November 2024, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the finals in Morocco, slated for December 2025 to January 2026.

France triumphed over Portugal in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after a tense match in Hamburg.

Theo Hernandez clinched the victory with his decisive penalty, following Joao Felix’s miss that hit the outside of the post, marking the only error in the shootout.

The French players immediately rushed to celebrate with their fans, while a disheartened Portugal team, who had previously won a shootout against Slovenia, acknowledged their supporters with applause. This match marked the end of an era for Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who had announced that this would be his final European Championship.

The much-anticipated duel between 39-year-old Ronaldo and France’s Kylian Mbappe did not live up to expectations as neither player made a significant impact.

Ronaldo successfully converted his penalty, while Mbappe, who was wearing a mask due to a broken nose, had to be substituted in extra time after sustaining a blow to the face, preventing him from participating in the shootout.

The match itself was closely contested with few clear opportunities.

Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha were both thwarted by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan, and France’s Randal Kolo Muani saw his shot deflected narrowly wide by Ruben Dias. Eduardo Camavinga also missed a golden chance, sending his shot wide from close range.

During extra time, Ronaldo had a prime opportunity to score but sent Francisco Conceicao’s cutback over the bar, leaving fans in disbelief. Portugal’s luck finally ran out as they faced their second shootout in consecutive games.

France now advances to face Spain in the semi-finals in Munich, with the match scheduled for Tuesday at 20:00 BST.

Xlimkid jabs Asaaka Boys in new track ‘Clowns in a Circus’

Ghanaian musician Kwame Boakye, known as Xlimkid, has generated significant online buzz with the release of his new single, “Clowns in a Circus.”

This track comes on the heels of his recent collaboration, “Glory in Pain,” with O’Kenneth of Asakaa.

Since the collaboration, tensions have escalated between Xlimkid and the Asakaa boys, resulting in a heated online feud marked by pointed exchanges.

The release of “Clowns in a Circus” has further fueled the dispute, with Xlimkid targeting the Asakaa boys and their protégés in his lyrics.

Insiders suggest that the conflict stems from contractual and financial disagreements.

In the song, Xlimkid provocatively asks, “Mese jack mommere me me krataa no. Krataa naa wosi saa ada no wode b3ba aa Besi ne yi woowaawaa ho,” implying concerns about alleged deceptive practices by the Asakaa boys involving paperwork.

These accusations hint at underlying issues within the Kumasi music community. For a deeper understanding of the ongoing conflict, listen to Xlimkid’s “Clowns in a Circus.”

  • ‘Call me, help me, call my mom’ – WAEC reveals new exam malpractice scheme

‘Call me, help me, call my mom’ – WAEC reveals new exam malpractice scheme

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has identified a concerning new trend in examination malpractice, where candidates are attempting to influence their results by concealing money and contact numbers within their answer booklets.

According to WAEC’s Head of Corporate Affairs, John Kapi, instances have been reported where candidates write phrases like “help me,” “call me,” or “just call my mom,” alongside GHC50 or more, hoping to appeal to examiners.

The incidence of such malpractice has shown a troubling increase from 2% in 2021 to 10% in 2023, prompting calls for a review of existing sanctions by WAEC’s Head of Legal Affairs, Rev. Victor Brew.

Brew emphasized the need for more substantial penalties to deter future infractions, noting that current fines of GHC1,200 to GHC3,000 may not be sufficient.

To combat these illegal activities, WAEC has enlisted support from the Ghana Education Service, GNAT, Ghana Police Service, National Security, National Intelligence Bureau, and external monitoring agents to oversee examinations rigorously.

So far, WAEC has reported 19 cases of malpractice, with 4 resulting in convictions and investigations ongoing for the rest.

Looking ahead, the BECE exams are set to commence on July 8, expecting participation from 569,095 students, underscoring the need for stringent measures to maintain exam integrity.

”The current penalty points in the law translates into a fine of between GHC1,200 to GHC3,000, which is not deterrent enough. If we can have a change in it to an amount that is hefty, then we can make some head way and deter others,” he added.

4 BECE candidates fined GHC3,000 for exam malpractice – WAEC

Four candidates who took the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have been prosecuted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) for engaging in exam malpractice. Among them, 4 have been convicted and fined between GHC1,200 and GHC3,000. Investigations are ongoing for 13 other cases, while prosecution is underway for 2 cases.

Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC’s Head of Legal, emphasized the importance of protecting exam integrity and called for stricter penalties to deter future offenses.

He highlighted concerns over a new trend where candidates insert money and contact numbers into answer booklets to influence results.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, confirmed this emerging issue and expressed worries about an increase in exam malpractice from 2% in 2021 to 10% in 2023.

The contact numbers come with the inscriptions, call me, help me, call my mom, to appeal to the examiners.

Mr Kapi said “The Council is recording a high number of cases where candidates write telephone numbers or the phrase “help me”, “call me”, “just call my mom” in their answer booklets and add GHC50 or more to it.

To monitor this year’s BECE, WAEC has enlisted support from Ghana Education Service, GNAT, Ghana Police Service, National Security, National Intelligence Bureau, and external monitoring agents.

The exam is scheduled from July 8 to July 15, with 569,095 students expected to participate.

Head of Legal at the Council, Rev. Victor Brew said this is part of efforts to protect the integrity of the examinations.

“We have done some prosecutions with 4 candidates convicted and fined. We believe this should let the public know that we are very concerned about the cases of examination malpractice, and we will act on all,” he warned.

”The current penalty points in the law translates into a fine of between GHC1,200 to GHC3,000, which is not deterrent enough. If we can have a change in it to an amount that is hefty, then we can make some head way and deter others,” he added.

A recent study by the West African Examination Council revealed a worrying trend of rising examination malpractice in the country.

The period between 2021 and 2023, showed a significant increase in the percentage of candidates involved in examination malpractice from 2% in 2021 to 10% in 2023.

All locked up Global Fund donated medications cleared – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed receipt of all medications cleared from the Global Fund containers previously held at the port.

Dr. Patrick Kumah-Aboagye, Director General of the Service, announced that these medications are now being distributed to areas facing shortages.

The Country Coordinating Mechanism for the Global Fund in Ghana recently verified that almost all commodities stuck at the port have been released, as assured by the Minister of Health.

Dr. Kumah-Aboagye stated that the GHS has already received and distributed the medications to affected areas using an electronic delivery system that provides real-time updates on supply situations.

‘‘The containers, a significant proportion like the Minister said has been cleared, and all those shortages, we are working to ensure they are delivered. We have an electronic delivery system that gives us real time situation of all our suppliers.

“So based on that, we put in when the requests come. We also have trucks that take medications to the facilities and deliver them as and when they come. So, we are rapidly deploying to make sure that any shortage is averted and where there are shortages and impending shortages, we are correcting them,” he disclosed.

He emphasized their efforts to swiftly address any existing or potential shortages.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Okoe Boye confirmed that essential medications, including those for TB and malaria, have been cleared from over 260 containers, with only a few new containers containing mosquito nets yet to be processed.

He assured that these remaining items would also be cleared promptly.

Dr. Boye highlighted improvements in the coordination between the Ministry and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to prevent similar delays in the future, ensuring smoother clearance processes for essential health commodities like those for managing HIV/TB and malaria in the country.

‘‘The media worked with us to ensure some of the medicines, including TB/MALARIA and mosquito nets were cleared from the port and I am happy that after we all voiced out and made a passionate appeal.

“As I speak, we have over 260 containers cleared. So all the TB and Malaria medicines are out. But it appears that there are some nets that after clearing all the goods, we have just been informed at the Ministry that new discoveries have been made of more mosquito nets,” he explained.

He assured that the remainder would also be cleared accordingly.

“So, this morning, the GRA informs me that they have put in a system to gazette them and get those ones too out of the port. I think what I want to mention which is very important is that the processes between the Ministry and the GRA have been streamlined, so that in the future we will not have this occurring again,” he stated.

  • Africa has gained giant strides in FinTech development and regulation

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, emphasized Africa’s significant progress in FinTech development and regulation, particularly in mobile money technology. He highlighted the potential of interoperable mobile money systems for establishing comprehensive cross-border payment capabilities in the short to medium term.

To achieve this, Dr. Addison stressed the need for harmonized regulatory frameworks, consistent technical standards, and robust infrastructure. He advocated for strong public-private partnerships involving mobile network operators, financial institutions, FinTechs, and regulators to tackle technical challenges and ensure compliance.

Addressing the symposium on retail payment interoperability, Dr. Addison underscored the importance of policy coordination, governance, customer education, trust-building, scalability, and inclusivity. He noted that while foundational elements like regulatory sandboxes and progressive frameworks exist in some African countries, enhanced collaboration among stakeholders is essential for success.

Dr. Addison expressed optimism that fostering a collaborative ecosystem will leverage Africa’s FinTech advancements to fully realize the benefits of interoperable mobile money systems, promoting financial inclusion and economic growth continent-wide. He encouraged other central banks to join efforts in advancing cross-border payment interoperability initiatives.

“Policy coordination and governance are also essential for smooth operation and compliance in a multi-country environment. By implementing these strategies, African countries can facilitate efficient cross-border transactions and promote financial inclusion to stimulate economic growth.

“On a more positive note, the foundational elements necessary to implement this idea of cross-border payment interoperability are partly in place in some African countries. These include regulatory sandbox programmes, progressive regulatory frameworks, and a dynamic FinTech sector, eager for growth opportunities. However, what may be lacking is
collaboration among stakeholders,” Dr Addison said during the Africa Prosperity Network (APN) 2024 symposium on retail payment interoperability, in Accra on Friday, July 5.

He further stated that effective collaboration between regulators, financial institutions, mobile money operators, FinTech innovators, and other stakeholders is crucial to address technical challenges, ensure regulatory compliance, build trust, and drive the scalability and sustainability of cross-border mobile money and other interoperability initiatives.

By fostering a collaborative ecosystem, Africa can harness its FinTech advancements to unleash the full potential of interoperable mobile money systems, benefiting both individuals and countries across the continent.

“On this note, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the organisers of this symposium for their dedication towards the launch of this initiative. Your commitment to foster collaboration and innovation in this crucial area is commendable.

“Permit me to also add that the initiative to scale up cross border payment interoperability aligns with the broader financial sector digitisation and inclusion agenda of the Bank of Ghana. It is therefore our hope that other central banks on the continent will join in and contribute to its realisation,” Dr Addison said.

It’s foolishness to think smoking marijuana will improve your voice- Nana Fynn

Renowned Ghanaian musician Nana Fynn, also known as 2Lock, recently addressed misconceptions about vocal improvement in an interview on Accra FM on July 7, 2024.

He emphasized that the belief that smoking marijuana can enhance one’s singing ability is unfounded and dismissed it as “foolishness.”

Fynn explained that vocal performance is influenced by a physiological connection between the ear and throat. While some individuals may naturally possess good voices, proper training is essential for developing singing skills.

He emphasized that confidence plays a crucial role in singing, suggesting that those who turn to substances like marijuana might be seeking confidence rather than genuine vocal enhancement.

Addressing other vocal myths, Fynn noted that bananas can help clear mucus from the throat, which can benefit singers. However, he cautioned against using the voice immediately after consuming cold water, as it can negatively affect vocal quality.

Nana Fynn, known for his debut album ‘Ankwansema’ in 2000 and subsequent successes in the music industry, also engages in gospel music, operates a studio and barbering salon, and enjoys hobbies such as football, snooker, and reading historical and religious texts.

  • NPA worried over rising cost of LPG

NPA worried over rising cost of LPG

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is concerned about the increasing cost of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and its impact on discouraging the use of fuel wood, especially in rural areas. Over the past few years, the price of LPG has risen significantly, from 5.81 cedis per kilogram in January 2020 to as high as 240 cedis currently for a 14.5-kilogram cylinder.

The LPG Marketers Association attributes this price hike to several factors, including rising world crude prices, a $80 per metric ton tax to support the government’s cylinder re-circulation model, and the NPA’s failure to reduce the premium for bulk distribution companies by $70.

This situation has raised concerns among consumers and experts, particularly since LPG, once subsidized to promote affordability, now carries multiple taxes and levies following subsidy removal.

Grace Zateh, a food vendor in Koforidua, highlighted that high LPG costs and other factors discourage her from using LPG. She mentioned, “The price of LPG is very high, so economically, it’s better for me to use charcoal. Also, some foods taste better when cooked on a coal pot, so customers prefer it. But if LPG prices come down with the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), we may switch gradually.”

Addressing these concerns at the launch of the Consumer Week celebration in Koforidua, NPA CEO Mustapha Abdul-Hamid expressed worry over the rising LPG prices. He assured efforts are underway to make LPG more affordable, aiming for 50% of Ghanaian households to use LPG for cooking by 2030.

Abdul-Hamid emphasized the importance of reducing LPG prices to discourage reliance on fuel wood, particularly in rural areas where it remains a readily available option.

Regarding the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM), Abdul-Hamid outlined efforts to accelerate LPG distribution through supervised bottling plants and licensed cylinder exchange points. He described the CRM as pivotal for job creation, enabling various entrepreneurship opportunities, even for recent graduates.

Deputy Energy Minister Collins Adomako-Mensah reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding clean energy use, including the distribution of 28,000 LPG stoves and accessories across 13 districts. Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong emphasized the flexibility of the CRM to enhance access to LPG without requiring consumers to purchase cylinders outright.

Acheampong called for continued investment to promote LPG usage awareness and accessibility, acknowledging the CRM’s role in bringing LPG closer to communities through cost-effective cylinder exchange points.

However, questions soon arose about the authenticity of the certificate.

Journalist Derek Edem Kojo investigated the claim and contacted Guinness World Records, where PR Manager Madalyn Bielfield confirmed that the certificate presented by Chef Smith was indeed fake.

Acknowledge our significant economic and social contributions – Used Clothing Dealers Association

The Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association (GUCDA) is urging Ghanaians to acknowledge the significant economic and social contributions of the nation’s thriving second-hand clothing industry, locally known as “obroni wawu.”

This call was made during a live LinkedIn session hosted by Channel One’s Umaru Sanda Amadu and Brands, Communication, and Marketing Professional, Jannice Tagoe.

The discussion centred on the social and environmental benefits of the second-hand clothing industry.

GUCDA representatives highlighted that millions of Ghanaians depend on the affordable clothing provided by this market, which fulfils a basic need and drives significant economic activity. Women play a crucial role in this sector, making up a substantial portion of the workforce.

Addressing misconceptions that the second-hand trade is solely waste disposal, GUCDA’s General Secretary, Edward Antobrah Benkley, clarified that less than 5% of imported clothing is waste.

“GUCDA actively collaborates with stakeholders, including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to ensure the safety of Ghanaians and the environment.

“GUCDA’s industry report, authored by Stephen Odonkor, Metropolitan Research Education Bureau, and E-volution International, and independent reports by GIZ confirm that waste levels are minimal, around just 2%, in contrast to the misleading images circulated. Such narratives could lead to harmful regulations threatening millions of livelihoods,” he stated.

Mr. Benkley emphasised GUCDA’s commitment to quality.

“Importers adhere to strict standards, and collaboration with the Ghana Customs Service ensures compliance. Beyond affordability, we foster a circular economy.

“By reusing existing garments, we reduce the demand for resource-intensive new clothing, benefiting the environment,” he added.

Marlvin Owusu, an Executive Member of GUCDA, emphasised that the industry is committed to protecting the economy, preserving the environment, and promoting sustainability for the benefit of future generations.

Established over four decades ago, GUCDA has been a steadfast advocate for the positive impacts of the second-hand clothing industry, which fuels economic growth, empowers countless individuals, and employs approximately 2.5 million Ghanaians.

The Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association calls for continued support of this vital industry.

The second-hand clothing trade demonstrably uplifts countless Ghanaians, drives economic growth, and fosters a more sustainable future.

Ghana’s Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, emphasized that the ‘Ghana Standards Authority Pricing of Cement Regulation 2024’ will not be withdrawn despite recent developments.

Earlier, Kobina Tahir Hammond, Minister of Trade and Industry, introduced a Legislative Instrument (LI) aimed at addressing rising cement prices.

However, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin reportedly advised Minister Hammond to withdraw the LI due to concerns that its provisions might face legal challenges related to price control under existing legislation.

In response, Afenyo-Markin, speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps, clarified that the concerns of the Minority and other stakeholders had been addressed during prior deliberations.

He highlighted that all amendments proposed by the Minority had been incorporated into the revised LI before its submission.

He questioned the Minority’s subsequent objections, emphasizing that their input had been integrated into the legislation in good faith.

“Now true to his word, Hon. K.T Hammond incorporated every single amendment proposed by the Subsidiary Legislation into the new LI before same was laid.”

“The LI, which was previously brought to Parliament was changed. Every amendment which was proposed by the Minority was factored into the new LI: so, the question is: why must the Minority come the next day to attack government?”

Guinness World Records (GWR) contender, Atinga Nsobila Joel recently addressed rumors about his submission for the “Longest barbecue marathon” record. In a Facebook post, he shared a screenshot of an email from Guinness World Records (GWR), confirming that his evidence had been received and was under assessment.

Atinga assured his fans and followers to disregard any claims that he had not submitted the necessary evidence. He stated, “Hello Ghanaians, this shows that myself and my team have successfully submitted evidence to @GWR so kindly disregard any claims that we have not submitted any evidence.”

The email from GWR acknowledged the receipt of his submission and detailed the next steps in the verification process. A Records Manager will thoroughly evaluate his documentation. Upon successful verification, Atinga expects to receive an official confirmation and a Record Holder Certificate. If additional information is required or if the attempt does not meet approval criteria, GWR will continue to communicate with Atinga via email.

Atinga’s response comes amid public scrutiny over recent GWR attempts by Ghanaians, particularly following the controversy surrounding Chef Smith’s unverified claim of holding the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

As the CEO of God’s Time Kebab, Atinga embarked on his record attempt by grilling 10,000 sticks of kebab over 90 hours. The event, held from April 11 to April 14, 2024, during Eid-ul-Fitr, aimed to surpass the current 80-hour record held by Jan Greeff (USA & South Africa).

Ghana needs a distinct music sound to enhance its global identity – Gyankroma Akufo-Addo

Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo has stressed the urgent need for Ghana to establish a distinct musical identity to enhance its global recognition. Acknowledging Ghana’s historical contribution as pioneers of Highlife music, she noted the absence of a singular, recognizable genre that defines Ghanaian music on the international stage.

During a stakeholder engagement with music industry leaders, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo remarked, “When we mention Ghana music, the question often arises, ‘What is Ghana music?’ While we support a diverse range of styles, it’s crucial for our producers and musicians to create a unique sound that originates from Ghana. Whether it’s Highlife or Hiplife, the goal is to establish a universally acknowledged musical identity.”

She highlighted the challenge of pinpointing a distinct Ghanaian sound in global music, emphasizing that this should not be the case. “Our music industry needs to reach a point where audiences worldwide can readily identify Ghana’s musical signature,” she asserted.

Gyankroma clarified that the initiative is not about limiting musicians to specific genres but about fostering a cohesive and recognizable music identity.

In a related effort, Ghana launched the PlayGhana initiative in December 2023 to revive the presence of Ghanaian music on local airwaves amidst a declining trend.

‘Dramatics’ – MC Yaa Yeboah chides LilWin for ‘miraculous healing’ after tragic accident

Entertainment critic MC Yaa Yeboah has strongly condemned actor Kwadwo Nkansah, known as LilWin, following a tragic accident that resulted in the death of a 3-year-old boy named Tawiah Ampomah.

Yaa Yeboah criticized LilWin for recording a song while hospitalized after the accident, deeming it inappropriate given the circumstances.

She also condemned LilWin’s visit to Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah’s church, where he claimed to have received miraculous healing through prayers. Expressing her outrage during an interview on Neat FM, Yaa Yeboah highlighted LilWin’s release on bail despite the severity of the accident.

“He visits the church, gets prayed for, and suddenly claims he’s healed, which is just theatrics. This applies to both the song and the so-called miracle. LilWin, who should be remorseful for causing a death due to reckless driving with an unregistered vehicle, instead celebrates his ‘healing.’ This is unacceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated in our society,” she stated in Twi.

Her comments followed a video that surfaced online showing LilWin and artist Kweku Flick singing a song expressing gratitude for surviving the accident. LilWin has publicly stated that he experienced healing following prayers by Prophet Adom Kyei at the church and has voiced frustrations over the criticism he has faced from the Ghanaian public.

Currently, LilWin is awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General regarding the next steps in his legal proceedings.

Hajia4Real has learned her lesson, others should learn from this – A Plus on romance scam

Entertainment pundit Kwame Obeng Asare, known as A Plus, has expressed satisfaction with the one-year-and-one-day prison sentence given to socialite Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Reall, for her involvement in a romance scam. Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on June 29, 2024, A Plus said that this punishment should serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar fraudulent activities.

A Plus emphasized that the sentence is meant to awaken people to the consequences of their actions, rather than to be a source of joy. He advised those involved in romance scams to cease their illegal activities to avoid similar repercussions.

“We shouldn’t take pleasure in another’s misfortune. I’m not overjoyed about the prison term,” he told host MzGee. “We’ve all committed acts for which we could have been imprisoned if caught. This punishment is intended to awaken people to reality rather than cater to their desires.”

A Plus expressed confidence that Hajia4Reall has learned her lesson and hoped that others involved in scams would take note. He stressed that anyone caught in such activities would inevitably face imprisonment.

Hajia4Reall was sentenced in the U.S. for her role in a scam that generated over $2 million. She was arrested in the UK in November 2022 and extradited to the U.S. in May 2023. Although she faced a possible five-year term after her guilty plea in February 2024, the judge showed leniency, considering her good behavior.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on June 29, 2024, A Plus emphasized that the punishment should act as a warning to others involved in romance scams aimed at illicitly amassing wealth. He advised those engaged in such practices to abandon them to avoid facing similar consequences.

“They say we shouldn’t take pleasure in another’s misfortune. I’m not actually overjoyed about the prison term,” he told show host MzGee. “We’ve all committed acts for which we could have been imprisoned if caught. I’m happy with the punishment because it’s intended to awaken people to reality rather than cater to their desires.”

A Plus expressed confidence that Hajia4Reall has learned her lesson and hoped that others involved in similar activities would take heed. He stressed that labeling her as a bad person is irrelevant and that anyone caught in such scams would inevitably face imprisonment.

Hajia4Reall was sentenced to one year and one day in a U.S. prison for her role in a romance scam that generated over $2 million. She was apprehended in the UK in November 2022 and extradited to the U.S. in May 2023. Although she faced a possible five-year term after her guilty plea in February 2024, the judge showed leniency, partly accounting for “good time” in her sentencing.

GIPC CEO justifies decision to scrap capital requirements for foreign businesses

Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC),Yofi Grant has defended the recent decision to eliminate the capital requirements for foreign businesses under Section 28 of the GIPC Act.

Previously, foreign individuals entering joint ventures in Ghana were mandated to invest a minimum of $200,000, while those entering the retail sector needed $1 million.

Speaking at the second Ghana EU Business Forum in Accra, Grant emphasized that this change aims to enhance competitiveness and attract more investors to Ghana.

He clarified, “There was a misunderstanding because the required capital remains with the company, not deposited anywhere. Our research shows nearly every foreign investor ultimately brings more than $500,000.”

Grant highlighted concerns about the psychological barrier the requirement posed, especially for SMEs in joint ventures. He noted, “In a 50-50 joint venture, if the foreign partner contributes $200,000, the local investor is expected to match. Unfortunately, many SMEs lack sufficient capital.”

However, some local trading associations have criticized the revision, claiming it favors foreign, particularly Asian, entities and disadvantages Ghanaian traders.
