A future gov’t led by me will intensify the fight against corruption – Alan

Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen has outlined ambitious plans for Ghana’s future, emphasizing a robust anti-corruption strategy and economic revitalization.

He proposed replacing the Office of the Special Prosecutor with an independent Anti-corruption Overlord, consolidating fragmented anti-corruption laws under one comprehensive document.

Kyerematen’s manifesto, the Great Transformational Plan (GTP), promises to prioritize the needs of vulnerable groups, including better support for persons living with disabilities.

He criticized District Assemblies for not releasing sufficient Common Fund allocations to these groups.

Additionally, he aims to significantly reduce Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio from 62.7% to 5%, signaling his vision for economic recovery and national development.

He said, “It is very important that we review the existing programmes. Governments will say we have programmes for persons living with disabilities but how far has this programmes helped them?” He asked.

“Currently, the Special Prosecutor derives its powers from the Attorney-General which is not helping to support the powers of the Special Prosecutor, so we are proposing that authorities assigned to the Overlord is not linked to the Attorney-General and so we are creating a whole new institution for dealing with corruption which is different from what we have now,” Alan Kyerematen added.

I’ll relocate to Nigeria if I receive a profitable alcohol endorsement deal – Mzbel

Ghanaian musician Mzbel has expressed her readiness to relocate to Nigeria if offered a lucrative endorsement deal from an alcoholic beverage brand.

This decision follows the Ghanaian Supreme Court’s recent affirmation of the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) regulations, which prohibit celebrities from endorsing alcoholic products.

Mzbel criticized these regulations as restrictive, arguing they hinder celebrities’ ability to secure profitable endorsements that could significantly contribute to their income.

In an interview with Onua FM, Mzbel voiced her frustration, stating, “If I land a profitable deal to shoot an advertisement, perhaps I’ll have to move to Nigeria for a year or so. I’m not sure if the government will prevent celebrities from shooting such ads abroad. If that happens, we will have to resist.”

She emphasized the potential financial gain from endorsements with alcohol brands, noting, “If I secure a deal with an alcoholic brand overseas, I will take the money, do the endorsement, and promote it on my social media platforms. Alcohol advertisements are quite lucrative, so it’s puzzling why we are not allowed to benefit from them.”

The Supreme Court upheld the FDA’s guidelines, initially implemented in 2016, which prohibit celebrities and professionals from appearing in alcohol ads.

The decision came after Mark Darlington Osae, manager of Reggie N Bollie, challenged the directive in court, arguing it was unconstitutional and discriminatory.

Despite the legal challenge, the court ruled on June 19, 2024, in favor of the FDA, affirming the guidelines as constitutional.

Flashback: You’ll pay recapitalization fee soon; BoG has collapsed- Ato Forson to Ghanaians

In August 2023, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson accused government of planning to impose a Bank of Ghana (BoG) recapitalization levy on Ghanaians.

He alleged that this levy is intended to shore up the central bank, which he claims is on the brink of collapse due to mismanagement.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded the immediate resignation of BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies, holding them responsible for the reported GH¢60 billion losses in 2022.

Speaking to journalists on August 8, 2023, Dr. Ato Forson criticized what he described as the unfortunate mismanagement at the Bank of Ghana.

He pointed to international offers from the IMF to assist in developing a recapitalization plan for the central bank, citing Ghana’s Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policy (MEFP).

He warned that Ghanaians could soon face a new tax specifically for the purpose of recapitalizing the BoG.

Dr. Ato Forson also criticized the BoG’s decision to spend $250 million (GHC2.8 billion) on constructing a new headquarters while the institution struggles financially.

He labeled this expenditure as insensitive amid the country’s economic challenges.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, has justified the quest to recapitalize the central bank.

The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana will sign the MoU to ensure that the Central Bank can continue with its mandate of managing monetary policy and ensuring price stability.

The recapitalization plan will look at the capital required, the timeline for recapitalization and more importantly, the sources of funding.

I still stand by the statement no genuine pastor exist in the country – Rev. Obofour to critics

Rev. Kwaku Agyei Antwi, known as Rev. Obofour, has reaffirmed his belief that there are no genuinely perfect men of God in Ghana.

He emphasized that Jesus Christ alone is the true path to God, and no pastor should claim to be flawless or saintly.

According to him, such claims imply dishonesty and mislead followers. Rev. Obofour criticized pastors who assert their genuineness, arguing that perfection is not attainable according to biblical teachings.

He cautioned critics to consider their words carefully, suggesting that trust should be placed in God rather than imperfect human leaders.

His statements have sparked debate among other religious figures in Ghana, including criticism from figures like Kumchacha, who argue that such remarks undermine the reputation of pastors in the country.

“If any man of God declares himself to be genuine, I would call him a foolish man. Such a person is deceitful. They have been misleading people for too long. While I respect pastors, claiming genuineness implies dishonesty.

“Being genuine would mean being perfect, but Jesus said He is the way to the Father. So, who else can claim that? We all rely on God’s grace. Be cautious when discussing this matter. Listen to me carefully, or it will be regarded as foolishness,” he expressed in Twi in a video posted by Zionfelix on Instagram.

Ignore Sarkodie’s wife’s comments on Tema Port sale – Sammy Gyamfi

National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has publicly criticized Tracy Owusu Addo, wife of rapper Sarkodie, over her comments on the ownership of the Tema Port.

Gyamfi dismissed claims that former President John Dramani Mahama sold the Tema Port to a foreign entity.

He clarified that the arrangement was a Build Operate Transfer (B.O.T) agreement.

This agreement allowed a company to finance the port’s expansion and development, manage it for 15 years, and then transfer full control back to the government.

Gyamfi emphasized that this strategy was adopted to save government funds for other developmental projects, which would help alleviate citizens’ hardships.

“I recently heard Sarkodie’s wife displaying ignorance about why Mahama would sell Tema Port. However, Build Operate and Transfer (B.O.T) is not equivalent to selling a port. It’s a financial strategy for government projects that avoids upfront expenditure. The company in question was initially granted a 20-year concession by Kufuor’s administration in 2004.

“With this backdrop, Mahama negotiated for them to use their finances to enhance the port, and by 2030, after 15 years, the state will regain ownership. Currently, the state still retains a percentage. It’s important to clarify this due to the misinformation circulating,” he explained in Twi during an interview with Adom TV.

This clarification came in response to Tracy Owusu Addo’s comments on the impounded Global Fund donation of essential health supplies at the Tema Port. Her statements, intended as an informal explanation, quickly gained a political dimension.

Tracy’s commentary suggested that the government holds only a 15% stake in the Tema Port, with a French billionaire controlling the facility.

She linked a 2021 Africa Confidential report titled: “SPECIAL REPORT: How Vincent Bollor won control of Ghana’s biggest port,” which further fueled the debate.

Reactions to her post were mixed, with some supporting and others criticizing her perspective.

In 2021, U.S. authorities arrested several Ghanaians linked to the gang, including Farouk Appiedu, Fred Asante, Celvin Freeman, Lord Aning, Sadick Edusei Kissi, and Faisal Ali.

These arrests took place across different states in the USA at different times.

The arrests of Freeman and Ali occurred in New Jersey on February 17, 2021, and they were subsequently presented in a Manhattan federal court.

Asante and Aning were apprehended the same day in Virginia and appeared before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Alexandria.

Appiedu was detained on October 18, 2020, in Queens, New York, while Kissi was previously arrested in Fargo, North Dakota, on February 5, 2020.

Cement manufacturers snub KT Hammond over price regulation meeting

Five cement manufacturers declined to attend a meeting scheduled with Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, on July 1. The meeting was intended to discuss a proposed Legislative Instrument (LI) aimed at regulating cement prices. Dangote, Supacem, Ghacem, Diamond Cement, and CIMAF cited the necessity for closed-door discussions.

Despite the manufacturers’ absence, Minister K.T. Hammond reiterated his intention to proceed with laying the LI before parliament on July 2. He clarified that recent speculation about opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was unfounded, emphasizing ongoing consultations with stakeholders in the industry. The Minister emphasized the importance of transparency in pricing and noted previous efforts to engage manufacturers on this issue.

“This was not supposed to be a press conference. It was supposed to be a meeting with the cement manufacturers. You will recall that in the last few days, I didn’t quite lay a document, but I have given an indication of my intention to lay an LI, which will relate to the pricing of cement in the country.

“I am not sure, but I suspect that in my absence, the majority leader may have sent it out. I haven’t been able to ascertain what exactly happened, but somehow it has gone all over the country that we are trying to lay an LI…I am going to do it; we didn’t do it on this occasion.

“The story out there is that the NDC prevented us; that is not true. But an instance of the statement I am making is that since that kind of attempt, I am still struggling with the words to use. I just gave a copy to my leader, the majority leader, concerning what I had in mind. But since that time, there have been so many complaints that I hadn’t consulted with the stakeholders before trying to lay the LI as they claim. I have refuted that on the various platforms because we didn’t consult.

“Consultation with these players has continuously been taking place. On a specific occasion, when I inaugurated a committee that was going to be responsible for this price regulation, I charged the manufacturers and their respective associations to be mindful of pricing cement in the country. We’ve asked them to publish the expatriate prices for us to have an idea into how much they are going to sell a bag of cement,” he stated.

Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku delivered a scathing critique of the current administration’s financial management, highlighting Ghana’s unprecedented $3 billion IMF aid recommendation under President Akufo-Addo as indicative of severe economic strain.

He contrasted this with historical data, noting that Ghana had never previously required more than $1.5 billion in IMF assistance, even during past administrations including John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

Opoku attributed Ghana’s financial woes to its recent engagement in a debt exchange program, which he argued signals significant financial distress on the global stage.

He cautioned that Ghana’s acknowledgment of this situation through the program suggests a dire economic predicament.

In response to the crisis, Opoku proposed innovative policies to revitalize the economy.

He specifically advocated for the NDC’s proposed 24-hour economy, which entails extending working hours through a shift system to ensure continuous productivity.

Opoku emphasized that such measures, focused on hard work and extended operational hours, are essential for stabilizing Ghana’s economy and generating employment opportunities.

“But for President Akufo-Addo, when we went to the IMF, upon looking at our financial statement, they said we needed $3 billion. Ghana’s finances are ill.

“Ghana is in so much debt. If we do not find a way out of this, we will be in so much trouble as a country.

“Before a country admits to a Debt Exchange Program, it means we have accepted that we are broke and there is no way of coming out of it. The mere fact that Ghana has admitted to this means we are telling the whole world that we are broke and helpless.

“What policy can be introduced to help us come out of this debt and increase our revenue and jobs? That is the 24-hour economy, the Ghanaian Economy will never sleep, there will be continuous productivity” Opoku said on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa morniing show on July 1.

‘Never in our history has Ghana gone to IMF for $3billion’ – NDC MP criticizes NPP borrowing

Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku sharply criticized the current administration’s financial management, pointing to a record-high IMF aid recommendation as evidence of Ghana’s severe economic challenges under President Akufo-Addo.

He highlighted that from 1966 to 2016, including John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, Ghana received a total of $2.5 billion in IMF assistance, noting that never before had the country required as much as $1.5 billion until now.

Opoku linked Ghana’s financial difficulties to its participation in a debt exchange program, which he argued signals deep financial distress globally.

He warned that without effective measures, Ghana faces significant economic jeopardy.

“But for President Akufo-Addo, when we went to the IMF, upon looking at our financial statement, they said we needed $3 billion. Ghana’s finances are ill.” he said on Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa morniing show on July 1.

“Ghana is in so much debt. If we do not find a way out of this, we will be in so much trouble as a country,” Opoku warned.

He further stated “Before a country admits to a Debt Exchange Program, it means we have accepted that we are broke and there is no way of coming out of it. The mere fact that Ghana has admitted to this means we are telling the whole world that we are broke and helpless,” he said.

Proposing solutions, Opoku advocated for the NDC’s proposed 24-hour economy, suggesting extended working hours to boost productivity and job creation as crucial steps to stabilize Ghana’s economy.

“What policy can be introduced to help us come out of this debt and increase our revenue and jobs? That is the 24-hour economy, the Ghanaian Economy will never sleep, there will be continuous productivity” Opoku emphasized.

LilWin was not present at church service after tragic accident, it’s false news – Prophet Adom Kyei

Prophet Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah, the head pastor of Believers Worship Center, expressed confusion and dismay over the criticism directed at him following actor LilWin’s recent accident, which tragically resulted in the death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

The pastor clarified that LilWin did not visit his church to give thanks to God after the accident, contrary to claims suggesting he was there to participate in a church service.

“It’s baffling that some have called for my arrest over this matter,” the prophet stated during a sermon to his congregation in Twi. “If a church member faces an accident now, they say come and arrest Kyei Cudjoe. It’s become that bad.”

Prophet Adom Kyei-Duah also highlighted the severity of LilWin’s condition after the accident, noting that the actor was coughing up blood at his movie premiere.

He attributed LilWin’s recovery to divine intervention, sharing that the actor removed his neck brace after receiving prayers from the church.

Meanwhile, LilWin was recently granted bail by the Asokore Mampong District Court after being arrested on charges of dangerous driving and causing harm through negligence.

The case has been adjourned to July 29, 2024, pending advice from the Attorney General’s office.
Despite the legal proceedings, a video circulating online showed LilWin recording a song with singer Kwaku Flick from his hospital bed, sparking further public attention and scrutiny.

This is how some Ghanaian celebrities reacted to Hajia4Reall’s sentencing

Ghanaian celebrities have expressed a range of reactions following the recent conviction of Hajia4Reall.

On June 29, 2024, she was sentenced to a year and a day in jail after a lengthy legal process with the US government that began in 2022.

In response, many celebrities took to social media and other platforms to share their perspectives.

Some criticized her actions and agreed with the sentence, while others expressed empathy and support.

There is also a view among some that her punishment was justified, citing concerns that her portrayal of a lavish lifestyle on social media misled young women into unrealistic expectations of success.

    Background:

Hajia4Reall, also known as Mona Faiz Montrage, was extradited from the UK to the US on charges related to a $2 million romance scam targeting older, single Americans. The 30-year-old musician and businesswoman appeared in Manhattan federal court on May 15, 2022.

Details revealed that she maintained five foreign bank accounts to receive funds from over forty victims through fictitious business entities in Bronx banks, New York. Initially pleading guilty to conspiracy to receive stolen money, she faced seven charges, including attempted wire fraud, money laundering, and other felonies.

As part of her conviction, she surrendered properties valued at $2,164,758.41 to compensate for the stolen funds linked to the conspiracy charge.

Be worried about your partner’s source of income – Nana Romeo on Hajia4Reall’s saga

Musician, Hajia4Reall, also known as Mona Faiz Montrage, recently completed a one-year sentence in the United States related to a romance scam, with allegations involving her ex-partner, Luvman Allison, known as ‘Luvman Allison’.

During a segment on UTV’s United Showbiz with MzGee, Nana Romeo, a radio presenter, expressed concerns over Hajia4Reall’s tarnished reputation and advised women to carefully consider the sources of their partners’ financial activities.

Nana Romeo highlighted that the stigma from such incidents could have long-lasting effects and emphasized the importance of conducting due diligence in relationships.

“The stigma will haunt her for the rest of her life,” said Nana Romeo. “Already, people say all manner of things even when you’re living your normal life; how much more when you’ve been caught and convicted? That is my worry. I’m worried about whether or not she can still be bubbly and live her life.”

He specifically cautioned women against being solely focused on financial benefits from their partners without understanding the origins of the funds.

“She mentioned her baby daddy as having introduced her to this. I want to advise women that if a man spends on you so much, be concerned about the source of his money. Some women are unperturbed about that; all they care about is you’ve given them money. But you should know the source of the money in order to be safe.

“Sometimes, just investigate because you may not be told about the source. Let this guide you; Hajia is out there, we don’t know about the baby daddy, so, don’t just be focused on the money. Be concerned about the source as well so you can save your life.”

According to court documents submitted by Hajia4Reall’s lawyers, Luvman Allison allegedly used her accounts to receive funds from unknown sources, exploiting her trust under the guise of a genuine relationship.

The documents detailed how Luvman Allison, while on probation in the US, persuaded Hajia4Reall to allow funds to be deposited into her accounts and transferred on his behalf, citing legal restrictions on his own financial activities.

Despite realizing the illicit nature of these transactions, Hajia4Reall continued due to concerns for her safety and that of her daughter.

The situation has sparked discussions about financial transparency in relationships and the potential consequences of unchecked trust in partnerships.

Embattled Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah LilWin was able to remove his neck brace and move his neck freely after receiving prayers from Prophet Adom Kyei, founder and leader of Believers Worship Centre.

In a viral video on GhanaWeb, the actor, along with his team, stood before the congregation during a service when the Prophet specifically called upon him. The Prophet laid his hands on LilWin, proclaiming, “Receive life. You are free, now take it off,” and continued, “You are free in the mighty name of Jesus. Let everything be fine with you, God be with you and let’s meet when we close.”

Following the Prophet’s instructions, LilWin removed the neck brace he had been wearing since his discharge from the hospital after a fatal accident that tragically resulted in the death of a child.

LilWin was arrested on Monday, June 3, 2024, for his involvement in the accident, which led to the death of a three-year-old boy.

The Asokore Mampong District Court granted him a GH¢50,000 bail with two sureties. He faces charges of dangerous driving and negligently causing harm. During the last court session on June 27, the case was adjourned to July 29, 2024, after the prosecution officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Emelia Owusu Ansah, informed the court that the docket had been sent to the AG’s department for review and advice.

This recent video follows another where LilWin was seen recording a song with singer Kwaku Flick while lying in a hospital bed.

The actor has faced significant criticism for his handling of the accident’s aftermath.

  • Business registration is not a lifetime commitment – ORC

Business registration is not a lifetime commitment – ORC

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has stressed that business registration is not permanent and requires periodic renewal.

Registrar of Companies Jemima Mamaa Oware, in a meeting with market associations in Greater Accra, highlighted the lack of awareness among traders about the need to re-register their businesses and submit annual returns.

In an effort to address this, the ORC is actively educating stakeholders on renewal requirements.

Madame Oware revealed that many traders were unaware of their obligations to renew their registrations and file financial statements.

She assured that ORC inspectors would assist traders with renewal issues to ensure compliance.

Madame Oware outlined the simple renewal process, including mobile renewals via *222# and payments through Ghana.gov to prevent fraud.

She emphasized that the ORC does not use mobile money accounts and warned against unauthorized payments, advising traders to make payments at the onsite bank or through Ghana.gov.

She also addressed the possibility of extending renewal deadlines, mentioning that the ORC is considering amnesty requests from market associations based on participation rates.

However, she noted that any extensions would depend on business owners’ responsiveness, with penalties increasing after July 1, 2024.

From June 30, 2024, businesses that fail to renew will incur monthly penalties starting at GH¢1,000.

The renewal fee for a business name is GH¢60, and for a company, it is GH¢90.

The ORC’s initiative aims to streamline the renewal process and ensure compliance, particularly within the informal sector.
