Being in Accra has brought more opportunities than Kumasi – Phrimpong

Ghanaian rapper Phrimpong recently discussed the challenges he faced in his music career.

In an interview with Accra-based Hitz FM on June 27, 2024, he explained that relocating from Kumasi to Accra significantly improved his opportunities in the industry.

He acknowledged that while Kumasi has produced successful artists, Accra’s dynamic environment provides better access to the music market and industry professionals.

This proximity has accelerated his progress, making the journey smoother compared to staying in Kumasi.

“The location has also been a challenge, I must admit, being in Kumasi has had, not to say a bigger, a bigger toll on the journey.

“There have been people from Kumasi who have made it big. I know some of my brothers who did it from Kumasi.

“But I think being here (in Accra) also lights up the energy, because I think here a lot of things do go on, you get closer to the market, you get closer to the people who are doing the thing itself. It speeds up the process for you,” he said.

Hajia4Reall to be sentenced today over internet scam

Ghanaian musician and socialite Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Reall, is set to be sentenced today, June 28, 2024, in a US court for internet fraud charges to which she has pleaded guilty.

Her legal team has requested a three-month sentence, emphasizing her role as a single mother and the critical need for her presence in her child’s life.

However, the US Attorney’s Office has argued for the full 37-month term, stating that a reduced sentence would be unfair and insufficient as a deterrent.

Hajia4Reall revealed that she was introduced to internet fraud by the father of her daughter, Loveman Allison, whom she met and fell in love with in 2015 in the United States.

She claimed that Allison involved her in fraudulent activities and has since been an irresponsible father.

Hajia4Reall has been charged with involvement in a $2 million romance scam, including wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and receipt of stolen money.

Reports indicate she was extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States for these charges.

One of her victims allegedly sent her $89,000, which she claimed was to help fund her father’s farm.

The charges carry significant prison terms, including up to 10 years for receipt of stolen money and five years for conspiracy to receive stolen cash.

Mr. Logic dragged to court over alleged fraud

Musician Christopher Nelson also known as Mr. Logic, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court on charges of defrauding an American citizen of $21,000 and GH₵48,000.

Nelson allegedly promised to secure a resident permit for the American but failed to deliver.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretense.

Nelson, represented by a lawyer, was granted bail set at GH₵400,000 with three sureties.

Two of these sureties must be public servants earning a minimum of GH₵2,000 and living within the court’s jurisdiction.

The third surety must provide a title deed as security. Additionally, Nelson is required to surrender his passport to the court and report to the police biweekly.

The presiding judge, Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Basit, instructed the prosecution to file disclosures and witness statements for case management.

Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, leading the prosecution, did not oppose bail but emphasized the need for conditions that ensure Nelson’s compliance with court appearances and police check-ins.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Khori Edward Lewis, is an American citizen living in Pantang, Accra, where Nelson also resides.

In May 2023, during a visit to Ghana, Lewis was introduced to Monica Spence, associated with Mr. Logic’s music management.

Nelson allegedly claimed he could obtain a resident permit for Lewis for a fee. Lewis paid $21,000 and an additional GH₵48,000 for purported government taxes.

Lewis later discovered through his investigations that the transaction was not legitimate, and the amounts demanded were unauthorized.

Upon reporting the matter to the police on May 11, 2024, Nelson was repeatedly invited for questioning but did not respond.

The Ghana Immigration Service confirmed that the actual cost of a resident permit was $1,000 per person, leading to the issuance of a summons for Nelson to appear in court.

  • We deserve a better explanation on alcohol ad ban – Wiyaala tells FDA

We deserve a better explanation on alcohol ad ban – Wiyaala tells FDA

Ghanaian Afro-pop singer and songwriter Wiyaala has called on the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to clarify its guidelines banning alcohol advertisements by celebrities. During an interview on TV3’s The Afternoon Show, she argued that the FDA’s directive is unclear and fails to satisfy the public’s need for explanation.

Wiyaala highlighted the need to distinguish between promotion and influence, pointing out that this ambiguity causes confusion in the FDA’s guidelines. Instead of an outright ban, she suggested that the FDA should establish clear rules and regulations.

“I personally don’t want to be a brand ambassador for alcohol because there’s a fine line between influence and promotion. Influence is more of an action on my part, while promoting is more of a choice. FDA should clearly explain their stance rather than just imposing a ban,” Wiyaala stated on Monday, June 24.

    Background

The FDA issued guidelines on February 1, 2016, prohibiting well-known personalities and professionals from participating in alcoholic beverage advertising. The FDA justified the guideline as a measure to prevent minors from being influenced by celebrities to consume alcohol.

The ban aligns with a World Health Organization (WHO) policy and aims to protect children and young people from alcohol addiction.

However, a citizen named Mark Darlington challenged the FDA’s directive, claiming it violated the right against discrimination as guaranteed by Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution. The Supreme Court, in a 5-2 majority decision on June 19, dismissed the case and upheld the FDA’s directive, ruling that it was neither unreasonable nor excessive and did not contravene constitutional provisions.

Interviewing Yaw Sarpong’s ‘ex-wife’ is unprofessional, unnecessary – Omane Acheampong fires Auntie Naa

Ghanaian gospel artist Nicholas Omane Acheampong criticized journalist Auntie Naa for her recent interview with Adwoa Penamang, who claims to be the wife of ailing artist Yaw Sarpong. Acheampong called the interview unprofessional and unnecessary, suggesting that Auntie Naa should have considered the potential harm it could cause to Sarpong and his family.

Speaking on Peace FM with Kwasi Aboagye, Acheampong noted that Auntie Naa’s decision to allow Penamang to make negative comments about Sarpong on air was a mistake. He felt that such sensitive family matters, especially involving an unwell person, should have been handled differently to avoid public dispute and tarnishing Sarpong’s image.

Acheampong emphasized that Auntie Naa should have thought about the repercussions and engaged in a more responsible journalism approach. He believed that if this kind of interview becomes the norm, the formal education in journalism might lose its value. Acheampong also mentioned that since Sarpong’s situation involves personal and marital issues rather than criminal offenses, the interview should have been more cautious and respectful of his reputation.

Adwoa Penamang had revealed during the interview with Auntie Naa on Oyerepa FM about feeling neglected by Sarpong’s family since his illness began. She expressed her concerns over Sarpong’s family choosing Maame Tiwaa over her to care for him, which she found distressing.

In response, Yaw Sarpong clarified that he divorced Penamang 20 years ago and denied any romantic involvement with Maame Tiwaa. Meanwhile, Prophet J.Y. Adu of New Jerusalem Chapel, Kumasi, explained that Sarpong’s illness is considered spiritual, not medical, citing the failure of medical treatments as a reason for seeking spiritual care.

Overall, Acheampong’s critique reflects a concern for responsible journalism and the potential impact of media coverage on individuals and their families, especially in delicate situations like Yaw Sarpong’s illness and personal life.

Ghanaian musician and TV presenter Mzbel has raised concerns regarding Adwoa Penamang, who claims to be the wife of Yaw Sarpong.

Mzbel questioned Penamang’s actions in granting interviews and scrutinizing the usage of funds donated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the veteran gospel artist.

The disputes surrounding the funds given to Yaw Sarpong during his illness are troubling to Mzbel, especially considering his condition.

During a panel discussion on Wontumi TV, Mzbel wondered if Penamang expected the money donated by Bawumia to be handed over to her.

Vice President Bawumia had contributed GH¢100,000 towards assisting Yaw Sarpong during his health struggles.

In an interview with Auntie Naa on Oyerepa FM, Adwoa Penamang disclosed that she had been mistreated and neglected by the family since Yaw Sarpong fell ill.

Penamang mentioned suggesting using some of the family’s money to complete the musician’s housing project, but her advice was ignored.

Despite claiming to be Yaw Sarpong’s wife for forty years, both the family and the musician deny her status as his spouse.

Yaw Sarpong has been battling a stroke, with hopes for a full recovery to continue his ministry.

Ignore my ex-wife’s damning allegations – Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong

Gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has addressed recent allegations made by his ex-wife, Adwoa Pinamang.

He clarified that their marriage ended 20 years ago when Pinamang left him and their children.

In a radio interview, Pinamang accused Sarpong’s family of preventing her from caring for him during his illness and claimed that Tiwaa, a female vocalist, had taken Sarpong from her with the family’s help.

Despite their long separation, Pinamang insists they are still married, arguing that they have never officially divorced and she should be considered his legitimate wife.

However, Yaw Sarpong stated that their marriage was never legally formalized and thus did not require a legal divorce. He explained that the union only involved traditional rites, including the presentation of a Bible, soft drinks, and a ring.

Sarpong recounted that Pinamang abandoned him and their children and moved to Kumasi during a time when he was seriously ill.

He noted that they have not communicated in the past two decades, making her recent attempts to reconnect unexpected.

He suspects her renewed interest may be linked to the GH¢100,000 gift he recently received from Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Despite these issues, Sarpong emphasized that he has moved on with his life but intends to resolve any outstanding matters with his ex-wife amicably.

Record label OFM requests YouTube to pull down Team Eternity’s ‘Defe Defe’ over copyright infringement

Music record label OFM Computer World, has lodged a complaint with YouTube, urging the platform to remove Team Eternity Ghana‘s popular track “Defe Defe” due to alleged copyright violations.

The label claimed that the song reused segments from the copyrighted song “Defe Defe” by Hallelujah Voices without authorization.

In a letter addressed to YouTube, OFM Computer World requested that the song’s visibility be altered to prevent access pending potential legal actions.

They emphasized the need for YouTube to privatize the video until the copyright issues are resolved in court.

Furthermore, the letter accused Team Eternity of frequently sampling songs from other artists without obtaining proper permissions.

This copyright dispute arose following a Facebook post by Kwame Mickey, the executive producer of Hallelujah Voices’ “Defe Defe,” where he alleged that Team Eternity Ghana had infringed on their copyright by incorporating the “defe defe” line in their new hit song.

While some argue that the structural elements and melodies of the two songs differ, Kwame Mickey contends that the lyrical content similarities warrant legal action. The original “Defe Defe” song was written by Osuani Afrifa and executively produced by Kwame Mickey for Kaakyire Music Productions, released in 2004.

This copyright dispute has sparked widespread debate, with some asserting that Team Eternity’s “Defe Defe” is distinct from Hallelujah Voices’ song, while others argue that identical lyrical lines constitute copyright infringement.

Obtain permission before televising movies – NFA to TV channels

The National Film Authority (NFA) has issued a directive requiring television channels to obtain permission before broadcasting any films.

This mandate follows numerous complaints from global film distributors about unauthorized broadcasts by Ghanaian terrestrial channels and media houses, which infringe on the copyright holders’ exclusive rights.

Under section 3(e)(iv) of the Development and Classification of Film Act 2016 (Act 935), the NFA is responsible for enforcing compliance with copyright laws within the Ghanaian film industry.

The NFA emphasized that airing films without authorization from the copyright owners constitutes copyright infringement, attracting both civil and criminal liabilities.

Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, the Executive Secretary of the NFA, advised all terrestrial channel owners and media houses to review the films they currently broadcast.

They must verify that they have obtained the necessary permissions from the copyright holders.

If any films are found to be broadcast without proper authorization, channels must immediately cease airing them until the required permissions are secured.

The NFA is tasked with regulating and developing the Ghanaian film industry, ensuring proper distribution, exhibition, and marketing of films, as mandated by the Development and Classification of Film Act 935.

He clarified that his role was to counsel, not to compel.

This comes after Great Ampong publicly sought Daddy Lumba’s forgiveness, aiming to mend their relationship.

The apology sparked varied public reactions, with some speculating that Archbishop Adonteng had pressured Great Ampong into the gesture.

Amerado is a good singer, he should stop rapping – Obibini

Ghanaian rapper Obibini has reignited his rivalry with fellow artist Amerado, sarcastically commending him for shifting his focus to singing.

Obibini, who previously exchanged diss tracks with Amerado, remarked that he is pleased Amerado has recognized that rap isn’t his forte.

In a conversation with Amansan Krakye, as reported by MyNewsGh.com, Obibini stated, “I don’t dwell on these things much, but during an interview about rap consistency, I mentioned that Amerado has found his true calling in singing. I’m genuinely happy for him and encourage him to continue.”

Obibini continued, “It’s great that he’s realized singing is his strength. He should leave the rap to me and concentrate on his singing career. That’s all I was conveying about being a consistent rapper, just giving Amerado some credit, despite how others are interpreting it.”

Despite the ongoing rivalry, Amerado has achieved significant success. He won the Best Rap Performance at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards and followed up with the Best Highlife Song in 2024 for his track ‘Kwaku Ananse.’

Current condition of Ghanaians woeful – Obibini

Former President John Dramani Mahama recently commented that the Dutch Passport or PhD debate is primarily driven by the current economic crisis, a sentiment echoed by rapper Obibini.

He explained on Cape Coast-based Property FM that the severe economic hardships under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo make many Ghanaians feel less proud of remaining in their country.

Obibini emphasized that due to the dire economic conditions, people are inclined to prefer a Dutch passport over a Ghanaian PhD, as the challenging situation is undeniable.

He pointed out that in other countries, labor is respected, fair wages are paid, and people can see tangible results from their efforts within a year.

While acknowledging that some Ghanaians are thriving despite the economic difficulties and may not feel the need to emigrate, Obibini noted that others see working abroad as a more viable option to achieve financial stability and build a better future back in Ghana.

He concluded by recognizing that blessings come in various forms, and different people find success through different paths.

“I’m not going to lie to you about the current conditions of Ghanaians, which are very woeful and pathetic, making most people not feel proud of staying in our country.

“But rather, we want somebody’s country because when you go there, they respect your labour, they don’t cheat you, and you’re paid according to the number of hours that you work,” he observed.

“So in about 12 months, you have something solid you can look at and say that you’ve not wasted the year, but per our economic woes, it’ll depend because others are making it big here as well.

He added, “The person making it here might not need a Dutch passport, but someone else needs it to work abroad to build properties here in Ghana. God blesses people in so many ways.”

With a self proclaimed PhD to his credit, Dr. UN asserted that Sarkodie, as a Twi artist, stands in a different league.

In terms of global recognition, Dr. UN questioned Sarkodie’s potential to secure a Grammy Award, attributing this skepticism to Sarkodie’s preference for Twi rap.

Dr. UN suggested that the limited reach of Twi rap compared to English rap could hinder Sarkodie’s Grammy aspirations.

“Sarkodie can never win a Grammy Award because he is a Twi rapper. If he switches then yes he can,” Dr. UN stated.

To improve his chances, Dr. UN advised Sarkodie to transition to English rap, suggesting that only then could he be considered for a Grammy.

Nigerian singer, Davido has filed a lawsuit seeking joint custody of his daughter, Imade, against Sophia Momodu, the mother of his first child. Filed at the Lagos State High Court on April 17, 2024, the suit (tagged LD/1587PMC/2024) lists Mr. David Adedeji Adeleke (Davido) as the applicant and Ms. Sophia Momodu as the respondent.

According to Punch Newspapers, Davido is requesting “unfettered and unrestricted access” to Imade. In his motion, supported by lawyers Dr. Olaniyi Arije, Okey Barrah, and others, Davido detailed the financial provisions he has made for his daughter. He emphasized his consistent payment of Imade’s school fees to ensure she receives a quality education without any interruptions.

Davido also mentioned purchasing an apartment in a secured condominium community in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos, specifically for Sophia and Imade. However, Sophia allegedly refused this arrangement and insisted that Davido continue to pay N5,000,000 annually for a rented residence instead.

In terms of transportation, Davido stated that he provided a Range Rover SUV for Sophia and Imade’s use, but when Sophia claimed it was not in good condition, she failed to inform him directly. To address this, Davido provided an additional vehicle, a Highlander SUV, and also gave Sophia N5.8 million for the Range Rover’s repair. Thus, she had two vehicles at her disposal.

Despite these efforts, Davido contends that Sophia continues to make unreasonable demands, which he describes as attempts to “frustrate him.” He also mentioned his financial contributions toward the rent of Sophia’s current residence with their daughter, stating that his attempts to support Imade’s overall well-being have been met with continuous and excessive demands from Sophia.

A director refused to speak to me for 6 years for messing up her stage play – Adjetey Anang

Renowned actor Adjetey Annan recently shared a significant misstep from his career during his speech at the EMY Africa Expo on “Inspiring Greatness” on June 14, 2024. This anecdote underscored the critical role of professionalism and preparedness in the entertainment industry.

Early in his career, Annan made a crucial error during a production. He arrived late, just 30 minutes before the play began, instead of the hours in advance he was instructed to. Exhausted, Annan went backstage to rest and unintentionally fell asleep.

When the play started, Annan’s absence became glaringly apparent during his cue. A crew member found him fast asleep and jolted him awake. Disoriented, Annan rushed to the stage only to realize he had forgotten his lines. His scene partner had to whisper the lines to him twice before he could proceed.

The performance suffered due to Annan’s blunder, and the director, Doris, was visibly furious. After the play ended, she bypassed Annan entirely during the congratulatory gathering, signaling a significant strain in their professional relationship. This incident left a lasting impact, with Doris refusing to speak to Annan for six years.

Reflecting on this experience, Annan expressed deep regret for disappointing both himself and the audience. His struggle on stage and Doris’s subsequent silence served as a stark lesson in the importance of dedication and punctuality in his craft.

It wasn’t until six years later, during a chance encounter at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, that Doris spoke to him again. Her simple but encouraging remark, “Young man, you are doing well, keep it up,” seemed to indicate a reconciliation, putting the past behind them.

Annan’s story serves as a reminder of the significance of learning from mistakes and continually striving for excellence despite setbacks in the entertainment industry.

‘You’re a gov’t-sponsored damage control specialist’ – A Plus fires Kwami Sefa Kayi

Entertainment personality and politician Kwame Obeng Asare, popularly known as A Plus, recently took issue with broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi over comments made regarding Alan Kyerematen, the leader of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC).

The exchange started when Sefa Kayi questioned where Alan would select his ministers from, should he win the presidency, given the limited support base of his party.

A leaked document allegedly issued during the John Dramani Mahama administration by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has surfaced on social media.

This document has been shared by a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho.

He accuses former President Mahama of capturing state property under his name before leaving office.

Koku Anyidoho, who has been critical of the NDC since leaving the party, shared these documents on social media.

The accuracy of these documents is uncertain, but they have triggered varied reactions.

Presently, the Akufo-Addo-led government has been accused of selling state assets to its members.

This comes amidst North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa accusing Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong of violating the constitution and abusing his power as a state official.

He believes that state officials must not be allowed to purchase any state asset.

This accusation comes after it was revealed that Mr Acheampong’s business, Rock City Hotel, is in the process of purchasing a 60% stake in four hotels owned by SSNIT.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, this constitutes unethical conduct and a breach of Articles 78(3) and 98(2) of the 1992 Consitution which ensures that MPs and Ministers “don’t abuse their office, take advantage of their office, and the influence they wield, to engage in business for private gain” to avoid conflict of interest.

During an interview with Starr FM in Accra, Hammer outlined his reservations, pointing to Mantey’s consistent prioritization of personal gain over communal interests.

“I never backed Mark’s appointment, and I made my stance known on social media,” Hammer affirmed.

“We have a longstanding history, and my stance on certain matters is quite clear.”

Hammer highlighted Mantey’s lack of substantial contributions to the industry, despite acknowledging his business acumen.

He stressed that public office necessitates a dedication to serving the greater good, a quality he believes Mantey lacks.

“Public service requires putting the community’s needs first and foremost, a principle Mark hasn’t consistently adhered to,” Hammer explained.

Drawing a comparison, Hammer lauded Ibrahim Ohene Gyan’s approach at OM Studios, where individuals are nurtured and guided to reach their full potential.

“Ibrahim’s mentorship extends beyond professional growth; he invests in people’s personal lives, fostering a sense of community and development, I suppoerted Abraham Ohene Djan to be Deputy Tourism Minister over Mark Okraku Mantey,” Hammer stated.

In summary, Hammer questioned Mantey’s track record of community-focused achievements and emphasized the importance of genuine public service.

“I didn’t support Mark’s appointment, and I was vocal about it on social media,” Hammer stated. “Our history goes back a long way, and it’s clear what I find unacceptable.”

Hammer argued that Mantey has not made significant contributions to the industry.

While he respects Mantey’s business skills, Hammer emphasized that public office requires a commitment to the collective good, something he believes Mantey lacks.

“Public office demands setting aside personal desires to serve a greater cause. Mark has consistently focused on his own interests,” Hammer remarked.

He contrasted this with the approach of Ibrahim Ohene Gyan, who has nurtured and developed many individuals at OM Studios.

“Ibrahim has supported everyone who has been part of his team, helping them grow and even organizing significant personal events like weddings. His mentorship transforms people from basic roles into skilled professionals,” Hammer explained.

In conclusion, Hammer criticized Mantey for not having visible, community-focused achievements. He stressed that public service is about making a positive impact on the community. “Mark is not a bad person, but his actions have always been more about self-interest than serving the public,” Hammer concluded.

Music producer and sound engineer Hammer has expressed his disapproval of Mark Okraku Mantey’s appointment as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts. During an interview with Starr FM in Accra, Hammer explained that his objection stems from Mantey’s history of prioritizing personal gain over communal benefit.

“I was never in favor of Mark’s appointment, and I made my stance clear on social media,” Hammer revealed. “We have a long history, and it’s well-known what I can’t stand or tolerate.”

Hammer pointed out that Mantey’s long-term behavior has shown a lack of significant contributions. While acknowledging Mantey’s business skills, he noted that public office demands a focus on the greater good rather than individual interests. “Public service requires putting aside personal ambitions for a larger cause, and Mark has consistently acted in self-interest throughout his career,” Hammer noted.

He compared Mantey’s approach to that of Ibrahim Ohene Gyan, who has been instrumental in the growth and development of many individuals through OM Studios.

“Ibrahim has supported everyone who has worked with him, even organizing their personal milestones like weddings. He helps people grow from basic roles into skilled positions,” Hammer explained.

In summary, Hammer criticized Mantey’s lack of visible, communal achievements, emphasizing that true public service is defined by one’s contributions to the community. “Mark is not a bad person, but his actions have always been self-serving, not community-oriented,” Hammer concluded.

Music producer and sound engineer Hammer has voiced his opposition to Mark Okraku Mantey’s appointment as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts, citing Mantey’s tendency to prioritize personal interests over the collective good.

In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM, Hammer explained his reasons for not supporting Mantey’s role in public office.

“I never supported Mark’s appointment, and everyone knows it,” Hammer stated. “I was very vocal on social media, and I clashed with him. We know each other well, and it’s clear what I can’t stand or tolerate.”

Hammer emphasized that actions over time reveal true character, and he believes Mantey has not demonstrated anything noteworthy throughout his career.

Although he acknowledges Mantey’s business acumen and admits to being a fan up to a certain point, he stressed the difference between private interests and public service.

“Public office is about setting aside your personal needs or desires and championing a cause. Throughout his career, Mark Okraku Mantey has been self-centered,” he asserted.

Hammer contrasted Mantey’s approach with that of Ibrahim Ohene Gyan, highlighting Gyan’s dedication to supporting and developing others through OM Studios.

“Over the years, the way he has managed OM Studios, he has supported everyone who passed through; he even organized their weddings for them. Dancers have become editors under his mentorship. It’s about self-development for everyone,” Hammer said.

Regarding Mantey’s accomplishments, Hammer remarked, “How do we know what Ibrahim has done? Because it’s visible to everyone. What you do in private is unseen, but your public deeds define you. Mark is not an evil or bad person, but he doesn’t prioritize the collective interest.”
