“Do the needful” – Kwame Mickey offers Team Eternity ‘generous exit’ from lawsuit

Music executive producer Kwame Mickey has offered Team Eternity Ghana a “generously affordable” solution to avoid a potential copyright infringement lawsuit.

In a Facebook Live broadcast on Sunday, June 17, 2024, the music executive accused the gospel group of illegally interpolating elements in their latest hit, “Defe Defe.”

Mickey criticized the frequent unauthorized use of original works by gospel musicians, who often justify their actions by claiming to do God’s work. He lamented that many creators are not receiving the credit and compensation they deserve, leading to exploitation in the industry.

“There’s something I need to address,” Mickey said. “We have veterans in music who see it as their business. We must be careful, or people will work hard and gain nothing. As long as I, Kwame Mickey, am alive, I will tell you what is right. We won’t let people reap where they haven’t sown.”

He condemned the practice of appropriating popular songs in the Gospel industry and denying their rightful ownership. “Every song has a creator,” he asserted.

“I’ve seen a group called Team Eternity. You guys are playing with fire. If you’re in doubt, ask Stonebwoy or Kwaku Darlington. I won’t let you go scot-free. I’ll get an international lawyer to make you respect me,” Mickey warned.

He emphasized that he is not like other musicians who create hits only to later live in poverty because they were denied their rightful earnings. He rejected the notion that it’s all for the advancement of God’s work, pointing out that even pastors collect donations for their ministry and people profit from religious texts.

Despite his strong stance, Mickey mentioned he has been lenient with Team Eternity because it involves God’s work. “I’m offering you a generously affordable solution. Come and do the needful,” he advised, showing a bottle of Christian Brothers brandy as a gesture of goodwill.

Two decades ago, Christ International’s Halleluya Voices released a song with the lyrics: “Me nuanom ee mese m’ongyae me w’ate, na menkɔ da Nyame ase’o. Manhyia Nyame a anka y’ayɛ me defe defe.” Both songs share the same title, “Defe Defe,” and contain similar lyrical content.

Veteran Highlife musician Rex Omar has firmly stated that he would not advise his children to pursue a music career in Ghana, pointing out the numerous challenges and disappointments in the industry.

During an interview with Accra-based 3FM, Omar shared his personal struggles and the systemic obstacles faced by Ghanaian musicians, especially on the global stage.

When asked if he would encourage his children to enter the music industry, he replied decisively, “no.” Despite their musical talents, he has managed to steer them away from a professional music path.

“None of my children are into music. I didn’t impose it on them. I told them the truth. They understand that if you play around with music as a Ghanaian, music will disappoint you,” he stated.

Omar recounted his experiences touring South Africa and other countries, where he observed a lack of support from the Ghanaian government. While other artists were greeted with significant support from their embassies, including branded vehicles, he often found himself without any such backing.

“I realized how exposed I am as an artist. It brought my spirit down,” he shared.

He mentioned an instance where he sought assistance from the Minister of Tourism for a tour, but received minimal aid.

“Today, tomorrow, today, tomorrow, today, tomorrow. He said they could sponsor one person, but even with that, I went on the tour for five months. I came back two months later before I was given something small. And even that something small, with the ups and downs, I nearly left it,” he explained.

Rex Omar believes that the industry has neglected its artists, making it difficult for them to achieve international success without a solid support system.

“Manifest has been reaching out frequently. We are close, but I don’t want to rush into it. If I do it once, I might feel compelled to do it for everyone. So, please, no pressure,” he said with a chuckle.

  • Clamp down on Asian businesses operating in the retail space – GUTA to gov’t

Clamp down on Asian businesses operating in the retail space – GUTA to gov’t

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) has urged authorities to take decisive action against foreigners operating in the country’s retail market.

GUTA argues that this sector, traditionally reserved for Ghanaians, is now dominated by foreign traders, particularly Chinese, who flood the market with inexpensive products.

At the Customs, Controls, and Regulations Forum organized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), GUTA President Joseph Obeng highlighted the issue.

He pointed out that foreign traders, notably those associated with China Mall and China Town, control around 40% of the market, undermining local manufacturers’ efforts.

“We have China Mall and China Town, which have taken over 40% of the market, and are derailing the efforts of local manufacturers.”

“All they do is to have their subsidized goods being dumped here (in Ghana) and we do not have the courage to clamp on them,” he opined.

These foreign entities, according to Obeng, import subsidized goods that are then dumped in Ghana, harming local businesses.

Obeng expressed concern that Ghanaian traders’ market share has dwindled to just 20%, with the majority of goods being imported by foreign traders.

“The local traders’ component is only 20%. The bulk of the goods is brought in by foreign traders.”

He also noted that foreign traders often repatriate their earnings, exacerbating the depreciation of the cedi, as they do not bring in the necessary foreign exchange for trading but instead turn to the black market.

“They don’t bring the correspondent forex for trading, they only go to the black market and change the forex and destroy our economy.”

Despite existing laws that mandate certain retail businesses to be operated by Ghanaians, enforcement has been lacking, allowing foreign traders to increasingly encroach on this space.

The forum organized by the GIPC serves as a platform to address issues affecting businesses and investors, aiming to prioritize concerns and inform policy reforms.

‘Liar Ablakwa must not be trusted’ – Bryan Acheampong

Owner of the Rock City Hotel and Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has firmly denied claims by NDC representatives Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Sammy Gyamfi that his hotel is operating at a loss.

Ablakwa and Gyamfi asserted that they had obtained documents indicating the hotel’s financial struggles.

In response, Acheampong called these allegations lies during an interview with journalist Nana Yaa Brefo from Media General.

He criticized Ablakwa and Gyamfi for spreading false information and challenged Ablakwa to publicly produce the supposed document.

“Rock City is not making losses. No one anywhere can say that Rock City is incurring losses. I saw Okudzeto and Sammy Gyamfi in the studio making noise. Okudzeto, wearing a smock, exaggerated that Rock City is making losses and that he has intercepted documents from the GRA.”

“He has not intercepted any documents. Everything he is saying is lies. There is nothing truthful about what Okudzeto said concerning that matter. In the first place, Rock City has informed me, and I have checked with the GRA, that they have not even filed their 2023 taxes yet.”

Acheampong clarified that Rock City has not yet filed its 2023 taxes, which are due at the end of June, making it impossible for any document to exist.

“So, they have not filed yet. Rock City has not even gone to the GRA; they plan to file at the end of the month. So where did he get the document from? What he is saying is fabricated and a lie.

“Rock City has not even filed its 2023 taxes. They are due by the end of June. So where did he get it from? Today, I am daring him,” Mr. Bryan Acheampong said.

Acheampong expressed confidence in the hotel’s profitability and dismissed the claims as entirely fabricated.

To demonstrate his conviction, he offered to gift his Akosombo Intercontinental Hotel to Ablakwa or an orphanage of Ablakwa’s choice if the allegations were proven true.

He urged Ablakwa to substantiate his statements with actual evidence, emphasizing the baseless nature of the accusations.

‘My luxurious hotel is not making any losses’ – Bryan Acheampong tells Ablakwa

Owner of Rock City Hotel and Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong has strongly refuted claims by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu, and Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Director of the NDC, that his luxurious hotel is incurring losses.

Ablakwa and Gyamfi alleged they had intercepted a document indicating the Kwahu-based hotel was not profitable.

However, Acheampong dismissed these allegations as lies in an interview with Media General journalist Nana Yaa Brefo.

He accused Ablakwa and Gyamfi of fabricating the story and challenged them to provide evidence.

Acheampong explained that Rock City has not yet filed its 2023 taxes, with the filing due by the end of June, and therefore, any claim of intercepted documents from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) is baseless.

He expressed confidence in the hotel’s financial health and called the accusations unfounded.

Furthermore, Acheampong declared that if Ablakwa could prove his claims, he would gift his Akosombo Intercontinental Hotel to the NDC MP or any orphanage of Ablakwa’s choice.

He emphasized his challenge, questioning the authenticity of the alleged documents and the credibility of the claims made by the NDC representatives.

In the first place, Rock City has informed me, and I have checked with the GRA, that they have not even filed their 2023 taxes yet.

  • ‘Team Eternity should have sought permission’ – Nana Poku Ashis on ‘Defe Defe’ saga

‘Team Eternity should have sought permission’ – Nana Poku Ashis on ‘Defe Defe’ saga

Amidst the controversy surrounding the popular Ghanaian gospel song ‘Defe Defe,’ a potential lawsuit is looming over the track. Renowned artiste manager Nana Poku Ashis has commented that Team Eternity Ghana made a mistake.

The dispute centers on the alleged unauthorized use of a line from the 2004 song ‘Defe Defe’ by Hallelujah Voices, written by Osuani Afrifa and executively produced by Kwame Mickey for Kaakyire Music Productions. The 2024 song by Team Eternity features the same line in its lyrics.

On June 19, 2024, Nana Poku Ashis shared a video on Facebook comparing both songs and highlighted the ways an artiste could use another’s work legally. He claimed that Team Eternity committed several infringements, including re-recording, copyright infringement, sampling, and lifting. Ashis stressed that permission from the original creators should have been obtained and advised against supporting the unauthorized use of others’ work.

“It is very clear that they have infringed on the rights of the legend. They should have just sought permission from the legend; respect is due where it must go. Let us not encourage such acts; just a phone call would have solved all these issues. Artistes must ensure they get proper clearance and obtain permission from the original creators before using their work. Give credit: Acknowledge the original creator,” he posted.

    Background

Kwame Mickey, the executive producer for Hallelujah Voices, claims that Team Eternity Ghana has unlawfully used the ‘Defe Defe’ phrase in their new song. While some argue that the expression ‘Defe Defe’ cannot be exclusively owned by Hallelujah Voices, others note the lyrical similarities between the two songs. Hallelujah Voices’ version includes the line “Manhyia Nyame a anka ɔbonsam ayɛ me defe defe,” whereas Team Eternity’s version goes “Manhyia Nyame a anka y’ayɛ me defe defe.”

This controversy has sparked discussions on copyright laws and the importance of obtaining permission before using elements from others’ work in new creations.

IMANI Ghana uncovers ‘shady’ deal between ECG and Genser Energy

Honorary vice president of IMANI Ghana, Bright Simons, says his uniform has uncovered what appears to be another instance of preferential treatment and questionable deals in Ghana‘s energy sector.

The focus of scrutiny is Genser Energy, a private power producer that has allegedly secured advantageous agreements with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at the expense of fair market practices.

At the heart of the issue is the pricing disparity between what large mines in Ghana typically pay for high-voltage power and the rates at which Genser Energy is obtaining electricity from ECG.

While mines are accustomed to paying approximately 28 cents per kilowatt-hour (KWh), Genser has reportedly negotiated a deal to acquire power at a significantly reduced rate of 8.2 cents per KWh.

The concern deepens as it is revealed that Genser Energy benefits from heavily subsidized gas prices, courtesy of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

Despite market rates suggesting gas should be priced at around $7.5, Genser is allegedly receiving gas at less than $3, allowing them to generate electricity at a fraction of the expected cost.

This advantageous pricing structure raises questions about fair competition and market integrity, particularly when gas supplies are under strain.

The fear is that such deals could lead to power shortages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ as resources are diverted to fulfill Genser’s contracts instead of meeting the broader energy demands of the country.

IMANI Ghana and ACEP have long been vocal about the need for transparency and accountability in Ghana’s energy sector.

They argue that these sweetheart deals not only undermine fair business practices but also contribute to financial instability within the sector.

When power producers struggle to be paid and fuel procurement becomes challenging, the repercussions are felt nationwide, impacting both businesses and citizens alike.

The situation has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged preferential treatment extended to Genser Energy and similar entities.

Additionally, there are growing demands for reforms to ensure that such practices are curbed, and the energy sector operates on principles of fairness, sustainability, and accountability.

As Ghana navigates its energy challenges, the spotlight remains firmly on addressing these systemic issues to secure a reliable and equitable energy future for all.

Why Kwame Mickey might take Team Eternity to court

Team Eternity Ghana is facing a potential legal trouble over accusations of using a portion of Hallelujah Voice’s song “Defe Defe” in their latest track.

In a Facebook post, Kwame Mickey, the executive producer of Hallelujah Voice’s “Defe Defe,” alleges copyright infringement by Team Eternity Ghana for incorporating the “defe defe” phrase into their new hit.

He challenges the similarities between the two songs and urges the other party to address the issue.

The matter has sparked debates on social media.

Some argue that “Defe Defe” isn’t a unique expression coined by Hallelujah Voices, thus negating their claim. Others, however, note the resemblance in the lyrics.

Hallelujah Voices sings “manhyia Nyame a anka ɔbonsam ayɛ me defe defe,” while Team Eternity Ghana’s version is “manhyia Nyame a anka y’ayɛ me defe defe.”

The term “defe defe” in Twi describes the intensity of an unpleasant situation, with synonyms like “pasa pasa” and “basa basa.”

Though the rhythmic and melodic structures of the two lines differ, Kwame Mickey argues for the similarity in their lyrical content.

“Defe Defe” by Hallelujah Voices was written by Osuani Afrifa and executive produced by Kwame Mickey for Kaakyire Music Productions, released in 2004.

Team Eternity Ghana, currently holding the top spot on Apple Music Top 100: Ghana with their song “Defe Defe,” is yet to respond to the allegations.

Their song, part of the ‘Testimony’ album, reached the No. 1 position on May 7, 2024, shortly after the album’s release on May 1, 2024. It has since garnered over 2 million views on YouTube.

Team Eternity Ghana might face legal trouble for allegedly using a part of Hallelujah Voice’s song “Defe Defe” in their new hit.

Kwame Mickey, the executive producer of Hallelujah Voices’ “Defe Defe,” took to Twitter to accuse Team Eternity Ghana of copyright infringement.

He claimed that the group used the ‘defe defe’ phrase from his song in their latest release as well as portions of the lyrics.

In his post, Mickey wrote, “Who is that Defe Defe singer? If I start right now them go say I am ‘mansonia’. What is the difference between the two songs? Somebody tell her to report and do the needful. That’s all.”

This accusation has sparked debate on social media. Some argue that ‘Defe Defe’ is a common expression in Twi and cannot be claimed by Hallelujah Voices. Others, however, point out similarities in the lyrics. Hallelujah Voices’ song includes the line “manhyia Nyame a anka ɔbonsam ayɛ me defe defe,” while Team Eternity’s song features “manhyia Nyame a anka y’ayɛ me defe defe.”

In Twi, ‘defe defe’ is an adverb describing the severity of an unpleasant situation, with synonyms like ‘pasa pasa’ and ‘basa basa.’

Despite structural differences in rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases, Kwame Mickey is focusing on the lyrical similarities.

Ghana is yet to fully tap into its tourism potential – GTA CEO

The CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwasi Agyemang, highlighted that Ghana has yet to fully exploit its tourism potential.

While acknowledging the significant progress made, he emphasized the substantial opportunities for further growth.

Agyemang mentioned that international arrivals, which reached around 1.1 million by the end of 2019, saw a decline in 2020 due to COVID-19.

However, by 2023, the industry had not only recovered but exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

He also noted the remarkable increase in domestic tourism.

In 2017, approximately 500,000 Ghanaians engaged in local tourism, a number that surged to 1.4 million by 2023, reflecting a substantial rise in local tourist activity.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, Agyemang highlighted the sector’s growth in cruise tourism, stating that there was a time when a cruise ship might dock at Ghana’s ports, Tema or Takoradi, only once every two years. In contrast, nearly 10,000 cruise passengers arrived in 2023 alone.

These statistics, he noted, demonstrate the positive impact of the GTA’s efforts in marketing, licensing, and regulation. Yet, Agyemang believes that much more can be done to fully realize Ghana’s tourism potential.

He pointed out the interconnected nature of tourism with other sectors such as road infrastructure and sanitation. “People are beginning to understand that the impact on tourism cannot be isolated from health, sanitation, or road conditions,” he said.

Refusing a breathalyser test, he claimed to have had only one martini and was following friends home.

Released without bail after being charged, Timberlake is set for a virtual court appearance on 26 July.

His lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., vows to vigorously defend him.

As a former NSYNC member and a renowned artist, Timberlake has acknowledged past struggles with excessive drinking.

New York law stipulates penalties for DUI charges, potentially including jail time, fines, and a suspended license.

Timberlake’s upcoming performances in Chicago and New York’s Madison Square Garden are now in question.

Married to actor Jessica Biel, he’s also recognized for his roles in movies like The Social Network and Friends With Benefits.

  • Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ becomes the most-streamed Afrobeats song in the US

Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ becomes the most-streamed Afrobeats song in the US

Rema‘s “Calm Down” continues to rewrite music history, securing its place as the most-streamed Afrobeats song in the US. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the 24-year-old Nigerian star.

Chart Data, a music monitoring platform, recently announced that “Calm Down” has become the first Afrobeats song ever to surpass one billion on-demand streams in the US, solidifying its status as the “most successful African song of all time,” as previously described by Chart Data last year.

Billboard magazine’s music analysts attribute the song’s success to its melancholic slow jam and subtle hypnotic allure. Its captivating nature embeds itself in listeners’ minds, compelling them to revisit it repeatedly.

Originally released in February 2022 as a single from Rema’s debut album “Rave and Roses,” the track gained further traction when Rema collaborated with US singer Selena Gomez for a remix, which achieved the billion-plays milestone on Spotify.

This remix also made history by becoming the first African song to spend a year on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, reaching number three and setting a record for the highest-charting song led by an Afrobeats artist.

The remix’s music video, boasting nearly 894 million views on YouTube, stands as the most-watched by a Nigerian artist, catapulting Rema into the upper echelons of prominent Afrobeats artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

Embracing his unique style, Rema has coined the term “Afrorave” to describe his distinctive blend within the Afrobeats genre.

  • “We want an independent post-mortem and toxicology” – Family rejects Mohbad’s autopsy result

“We want an independent post-mortem and toxicology” – Family rejects Mohbad’s autopsy result

The family of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, has rejected the autopsy findings and is calling for an independent post-mortem and toxicology examination.

Mohbad died on September 12 at 27, in circumstances that raised questions, prompting the police to conduct an autopsy on September 21 to determine the cause of death.

In a virtual press conference led by Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, and their legal team, they expressed dissatisfaction with the inconclusive nature of the autopsy results.

They specifically raised concerns about where and how the autopsy and toxicology tests were conducted, noting conflicting reports.

The family stressed the importance of having a reputable and internationally recognized forensic laboratory re-examine the toxicology samples to ensure adherence to the highest forensic science standards.

They called for transparency, collaboration with international experts, and prompt action from relevant authorities, including the Inspector General of Nigeria Police, to uncover the truth and bring justice to Mohbad’s memory.

Furthermore, they urged the coroner’s court to expedite a hearing on their request for an independent autopsy and toxicology test, highlighting its critical role in delivering justice and revealing the actual circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death. Despite challenges like body decomposition, they emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth.

They remarked: “We, the legal representatives of the Aloba family, express our profound dissatisfaction and disappointment with the recent announcement regarding the toxicology test results of the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (Mohbad), which have been declared inconclusive by the pathologist.

“This outcome is entirely unacceptable to us and the Aloba family and raises serious concerns about the integrity and thoroughness of the investigation by the police and the medical team into the untimely death of their beloved son, brother, and friend. The Aloba family and the world demand to know where the toxicology test was carried out as this has impugned the integrity.”

“No politician has ever fed me, nobody can boldly claim so” – Kwaku Manu

Ghanaian actor Kwaku Manu recently addressed allegations suggesting he’s been benefiting from politicians, particularly during John Dramani Mahama’s presidency.

He clarified that while there was indeed an initiative to provide cars to financially struggling celebrities, he personally didn’t accept one as he already owned a vehicle at the time.

He expressed confusion over the backlash faced by celebrities for disclosing their political affiliations, questioning the rationale behind such reactions.

Manu explained that Mahama’s initiative aimed to assist struggling celebrities by offering them cars with the expectation of repayment as a loan over time.

Despite attending the event where cars were distributed, Manu declined the offer, suggesting others who needed it more should benefit.

He emphasized that no politician has ever provided for him directly, refuting claims of benefiting from political ties.

These statements from Manu align with Actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu’s encouragement for actors to support Mahama in the upcoming 2024 general elections, referencing his past gestures of support during his presidency. However, Manu’s advocacy for Mahama has stirred criticism from some sectors of the public.

“Why would you be angry if someone is affiliated with NPP or NDC? Are you wiser than everyone? Mahama realized that some celebrities were not living in good conditions, so he put measures in place to gift cars so that they could pay for them as loans over time.

“I went to see the cars with others who were struggling at that time. I told them to give it to others because I had a vehicle that was dear to me. I was driving at that time. No politician has ever fed me. Nobody can boldly claim so. So when I speak, I know what I am talking about,” he stated in a video shared by Express GH TV on their YouTube channel.

Manu highlighted that politicians have never financially supported him directly, emphasizing his independence in expressing his views.

This response came after fellow actress Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu urged actors to support Mahama in the upcoming elections, citing his past efforts.

Manu echoed her sentiments and advocated for Mahama’s support during a meeting with the NDC flagbearer, which has garnered mixed reactions from the public.

“Why would you be angry if someone is affiliated with NPP or NDC? Are you wiser than everyone? Mahama realized that some celebrities were not living in good conditions, so he put measures in place to gift cars so that they could pay for them as loans over time.

I thought my previous relationship would be eternal, but it was a fantasy – Camidoh

Ghanaian Afrobeats star Camidoh recently shared the story behind his latest song “NLF” (Nothing Lasts Forever), inspired by a personal heartbreak.

In an interview on Hitz FM on June 18, 2024, he reflected on his past relationship, acknowledging that he had been overly confident and convinced it would last indefinitely.

“Basically, we fell out, but I held onto the idea that it would last forever. I became too sure of myself. I was living in a fantasy world,” he admitted.

The ‘Sugarcane’ singer explained that this experience was a wake-up call, teaching him that relationships can end for various reasons and that sometimes separation is unavoidable.

“I felt like God gave me a reality check. I had to accept that things might not work out. If we don’t break up due to a misunderstanding, we could still end up apart at some point. When you understand the inevitability of death, you realize that even though I’m with this person, anything can happen, and one of us may lose the other,” he reflected.

Camidoh shared that this realization has better prepared him for future relationships. “If I marry someone in the future and it doesn’t work out, I won’t be as devastated as I was,” he concluded.
