EC Commissioner prays for divine intervention against technical hitches in ongoing voter registration exercise

A member of the Electoral Commission (EC), Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng, has turned to prayer in the face of ongoing technical issues during the voter registration exercise.

On May 8, 2024, she visited the Ayawaso West district office of the EC, witnessing firsthand the challenges affecting the registration process.

Gathering with party agents, Rev. Boateng led a heartfelt prayer for the proper functioning of registration machines and connectivity, calling on divine intervention for a smooth registration process.

She emphasized the need for the machines to work consistently throughout the day to ensure everyone has the opportunity to register.

In her prayer, Rev. Ofori Boateng said “we pray for the machines that we are using here, we pray for connectivity, we pray that they will work. We pray that they will work throughout the day so that everybody will have the opportunity to register.”

The initial setbacks on the first day, attributed to power supply and network issues, improved on the second day but later resurfaced, prompting the plea for divine assistance to address the recurring challenges.

Police arrest 3 individuals for causing confusion at Tepa in the Ashanti Region

A scuffle broke out during the limited voter registration at the Tepa Electoral Commission office in the Ashanti Region leading to the arrest of three individuals.

The Ghana Police Service swiftly restored calm, allowing the registration process to resume smoothly.

The suspects Abass Abukari, George Vinor, and Abdul Karim are now assisting in the ongoing police investigation.

The nationwide limited voter registration, initiated by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) ahead of the 2024 general elections, targets first-time voters and those seeking voter cards.

Chairperson Jean Mensa stated the goal is to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters countrywide.

“The registration will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And that gives us the figure of 623,000 that we have put there. That is not to say that we cannot go beyond that. We did mention that in 2023, we projected 700,000 people to visit our registration centers.”

To mitigate challenges like power outages, the EC has equipped all district offices with rented generators, ensuring uninterrupted registration services.

“We are trying hard to make arrangements to ensure that we don’t face challenges because of ‘dumsor.’ What we’ve done is to have all our district offices rent generators so that in the event where there’s ‘dumsor,’ they can kick in. However, should there be the unexpected, we would switch to offline mode, meaning voters will be registered manually, and their details will be stored on a pen drive. This data will be copied in our offices when the power returns, so the registration will not be disrupted.”

The 21-day registration period will run until May 27, 2024.

Public disagreements between EOCO-OSP on Cecilia Dapaah case embarrassing – Ghana Integrity Initiative

Executive Secretary of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Addah has expressed deep concern over the escalating public feud between the country’s two state anti-corruption bodies, the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The dispute arose when COP Maame Yaa Tiwa Addo-Danquah of EOCO announced the return of the Cecilia Dapaah cash case docket to OSP, citing insufficient evidence for further investigation.

This move was met with a swift rebuttal from Samuel Appiah Darko of OSP, highlighting EOCO’s prior return of the same docket.

Addah emphasized the counterproductive nature of airing such disputes in the media, stressing the importance of collaboration and unity in combating corruption.

She urged the agencies to focus on substantive issues like the Cecilia Dapaah case and emphasized the need for lifestyle audits.

“Bringing these issues into the media is not the best way to go. It’s good to work together and collaborate. It is not healthy for the fight against corruption to listen to some of these sentiments going on.

“There are issues around lifestyle audit that we need to pay attention to. What the people of Ghana want is these investigative bodies to be prosecuting corruption and not doing the internal wrangling,’’ the GII boss advised.

Moreover, Addah voiced concerns over funding restrictions hindering Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in their anti-corruption efforts.

“Civil Society want to do more to fight corruption in the country. We are doing a lot. But on another score, because of the restrictions on our funding sometimes you will even want to do more. Sometimes you want to mobilise the citizens on the streets, but you do not have the resources to do so. We do not have the mandate to do investigations so you see, we are not as much as we will wish. We work within limited places because of resources,” she said.

Despite these challenges, she noted the potential for collaboration between CSOs and anti-corruption agencies in the Commonwealth to bolster the fight against corruption across Africa.

The Commonwealth Regional Conference on corruption highlighted shared experiences and lessons, fostering optimism for a more effective anti-corruption campaign moving forward.

‘Of course, I’ll not protect your ‘legacy’ of corruption, misgovernance’ – Mahama fires back at Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has responded to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s recent remarks about his potential impact on the country’s future if elected in the 2024 general elections.

In a statement on his X platform, Mahama retorted, “I won’t protect your ‘legacy’ of corruption, misgovernance, arrogance, ineptitude, a bankrupt economy, increased unemployment, and driving more of our people into poverty.”

Akufo-Addo, during a mini rally in Doboro, Greater Accra, had urged Ghanaians to reject Mahama in the upcoming elections, citing a lack of confidence in Mahama’s ability to lead the country forward.

Encouraging citizens to register for the Limited Voter registration exercise, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of voting, stating, “Your vote is your power.”

He further endorsed Dr. Bamwua, expressing confidence in his ability to continue the progress made during his administration, saying, “I have worked with him for the past seven and a half years, and I know he can continue the good work.”

During his appearance on the Daybreak Hitz show on May 8, 2024, Byno recounted the heartbreaking story of being abandoned by his father at birth and losing his mother just three months later.

“I didn’t know my father growing up. According to what my grandmom told me, when I was born, the man came to the hospital, saw me, and said, ‘We don’t have this thing in my family.’ So he ran away. My mom, out of pain and disappointment, died when I was just three months old,” he shared.

Raised by his grandmother, Byno faced serious health challenges and societal discrimination due to his condition.

“My grandmom took responsibility for me. At the time, I was a sickly child. I got so sick that you could see the food traveling down my stomach when I was eating. That’s how sick I was,” he revealed.

Despite these hardships, Byno’s life took a turn when his headmaster introduced him to music at the age of five, igniting a passion that would define his future.

His journey culminated in victory on TV3’s Mentor, capturing the hearts of fans across Ghana and showcasing his undeniable talent to the world.

  • SHS student jailed 15 years for stealing rice and stew, mobile phone worth GHC700

SHS student jailed 15 years for stealing rice and stew, mobile phone worth GHC700

An 18-year-old student from Adanwomase Senior High School has received a 15-year prison sentence with hard labor from the Circuit Court at Old Tafo in the Ashanti Region.

Gabriel Osei Kwame was found guilty of robbing Matilda Boatema, a teacher at Gyaman Pensan Senior High School.

Gabriel admitted to the robbery charge under section 149 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act (Act 29) of 1960.

The incident took place on March 4, 2024, around 7:30 am when Gabriel attacked Matilda near her home in Adanwomase.

He stole her Infinix Hot 9 smartphone worth 700 cedis, 570 cedis in cash, along with some food items and documents.

Matilda reported the robbery promptly to Asonomaso police, who acted swiftly.

While her bag was found nearby in a bush, the phone and cash were missing.

Following investigations, Gabriel was arrested on March 25 after Matilda identified him in Adanwomase.

Initially, Gabriel denied involvement but later confessed to the police, admitting to robbing Matilda and revealing that he sold the stolen phone for 250 cedis at Adum PZ.

Despite efforts, the phone was not recovered.

During the court proceedings, State prosecutor Inspector Alfred Aruk presented evidence from the investigation.

Gabriel’s confession and the recovered items were crucial evidence against him.

The judge, His Honour Festus Nukunu, handed down the sentence, considering the severity of the crime and its impact on the victim.

Gabriel’s actions resulted in legal repercussions and inflicted distress and financial loss on Matilda Boatema.

However, in response to discussions around the judgment, Judge Festus Nukunu clarified his sentencing.

In a letter to the Executive Director of Crime Check Foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, he explained that his judgment was not based on stolen food items like rice and stew.

Instead, he cited two legal factors as the basis for the sentence: the use of a weapon (jack knife) by the student to intimidate the victim, which carries a potential jail term of 5 years, and the value of the stolen items (phone and money), which also merits a jail sentence.

Judge Festus Nukunu emphasized that his decision was rooted in legal facts, particularly highlighting the distinction between robbery and theft as separate offenses under the law.

It would take 2 years for any Ghanaian artist to fill up 02 Arena – Alordia

CEO of Ghana Music Awards UK, Nii Ofori Tackie, popularly known as Alordia recently forecasted that it will take approximately two years for a Ghanaian artist to achieve a sell-out performance at the prestigious O2 Arena in the United Kingdom.

This projection follows the resounding success of the Indigo O2 concert headlined by Ghanaian rapper Medikal on May 3, 2024.

The event, which boasted a stellar lineup including Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Bisa Kdei, sold out to enthusiastic fans.

Further affirming this trend, the subsequent sold-out Legends Night concert featuring Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, alongside Shatta Wale and Medikal, highlighted the growing prominence of Ghanaian music on the global stage.

During an interview on Joy Prime on May 7, Alordia emphasized the need for sustained promotion over the next one to two years to build a dedicated Ghanaian audience for such high-profile shows.

He noted that while Ghanaian artists attract moderate attendance, Nigerian counterparts often draw larger crowds due to their broader appeal across African and Caribbean audiences.

Alordia outlined the necessity for Ghanaian artists to expand their reach internationally, citing the example of Nigerian musicians who attract fans from diverse backgrounds familiar with their music.

He emphasized the importance of penetrating foreign markets to fill venues like the O2 Arena with enthusiastic supporters.

“We can do the O2 Arena, but we need another one and a half to two more years to do it. The reason is that Ghanaians come out for shows, but they don’t come out that much.

“When Nigerian artistes are doing their shows, we get fans from other African countries like South Africa, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana, and Zimbabwe, all going to support them because their music cuts across those countries. They know the songs. So as soon as they hear Wizkid is coming, they know Wizkid’s songs, so, they will go,” he said.

In essence, Alordia’s vision entails bridging cultural boundaries and leveraging global interest in African music to propel Ghanaian artists towards achieving monumental success on an international scale.

“Like if you are going to post that you asked me out. So? And? Okay. And why? To me, the whole thing is more comedy than anything else.

Kendrick Lamar face off with Drake

A new saga unfolds in the realm of hip-hop as three titans of the genre Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and J Cole engage in a heated exchange of diss tracks, showcasing their lyrical prowess and competitive spirit.

The feud, which started innocently enough with a compliment on their respective careers, quickly escalated into a war of words, reminiscent of past iconic diss tracks like 2Pac’s Hit ‘Em Up and Jay-Z’s Takeover.

Each rapper brought their unique style to the battlefield:

Drake, the Canadian artist known for his blend of rap and R&B, boasts a string of commercial hits like Hotline Bling and One Dance.

Kendrick Lamar, hailed as one of the best lyricists of his generation, is known for tackling weighty topics in his music, earning him critical acclaim and a Pulitzer Prize.

J Cole, mentored by Jay-Z, has carved his own path with introspective songs, garnering widespread popularity and respect.
The feud traces back to a compliment by J Cole in a collaboration with Drake, where they dubbed themselves the “big three” of modern hip-hop.

This seemingly innocent remark lit the fuse for a series of diss tracks and retaliatory verses.

The escalation reached a peak with Kendrick Lamar’s explosive verse in a track by Metro Boomin’ and Future, where he dismantled the notion of a “big three” and asserted his dominance in the game.

Drake and J Cole fired back with their own tracks, each attempting to outdo the other in lyrical jabs and braggadocio.

However, J Cole later regretted his response, acknowledging that it was a misstep driven by the pressure to defend his reputation.

The feud took personal turns as accusations and insults were hurled, including allegations of plastic surgery, parenting skills, and hidden family secrets.

Kanye West even joined in with a diss track aimed at Drake’s record deal and lyrical abilities.

As the feud continues to dominate headlines and music charts, some observers question whether the intense rivalry is overshadowing the artists’ talents and contributions to the genre.

Akufo-Addo has no respect for anybody; dumsor is getting out of hand – Rev Abraham Lamptey

Apostle Abraham Lamptey, the founder and leader of Believers House of Worship International, has voiced his disapproval of Ghana’s ongoing power crisis in a recent sermon to his congregation.

The respected religious figure criticized the government’s handling of the situation, accusing them of disrespect towards the people.

During his address over the weekend, Apostle Lamptey pointedly questioned the silence of those who had previously criticized former President John Dramani Mahama for similar power challenges but had turned a blind eye to the current outages under President Akufo-Addo-Addo‘s administration.

Expressing concern over the politicization of crucial issues, he emphasized the seriousness of the power crisis and urged the government to provide a clear timetable for addressing it.

He lamented the lack of transparency from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) regarding the reasons behind the outages.

“They don’t respect anybody. Akufo-Addo has no respect for anybody. ECG is not telling us what is wrong. Nobody is talking. The Akan chiefs, we heard you during the era of former President Mahama. Have you lost your voice now? Those prophets who prophesied about the victory of the NPP, was this part of your prophecies? What is happening to Ghana? Nobody respects anybody to say that today, the dumsor will affect residents in Mamaprobi and the next one will affect Odorkor residents.
What is wrong with us? We deserve to be treated and seen as human beings, not sheep or goats,” Rev Lamptey stated.

Apostle Lamptey also criticized the government’s campaign promises, suggesting that they were made out of desperation rather than genuine wisdom.

He expressed disappointment in Ghanaian professionals seeking opportunities abroad, citing a lack of effective leadership as the root cause.

In a passionate plea, he urged Ghanaians, especially his church members, not to succumb to political manipulation and to speak out against injustices on social media.

He called for a return to accountability and effective governance, highlighting the need for leaders to respect and listen to the concerns of the people.

Addressing Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh directly, Apostle Lamptey called for a more empathetic and informative approach in addressing the nation about the power crisis.

He cautioned against the growing disconnect between those in power and the citizens, urging for humility and genuine dialogue to resolve pressing issues.

Prominent trader in Dome market known as Nana Addo Maame voiced her discontent with the Nana Akufo-Addo government, citing severe economic challenges.

In a recent interview with Happy FM, she highlighted how transporting cooking oil from Togo to Ghana has become prohibitively expensive under the current administration, with tariffs soaring from 12 cedis per gallon to a staggering 200 cedis.

This drastic change has led her to shift her political allegiance, formerly a staunch supporter of the NPP.

“Things have become extremely hard in Akufo-Addo’s government. I used to purchase gallons of oil from Togo to Ghana with a duty of 12 cedis per gallon but now under Akufo-Addo, I pay 200 cedis per gallon and moreover my 500 gallons of cooking oil has been seized at the boarder. Low turnout in limited voters registration exercise concerning, only 10 registered in Adaklu constituency- Agbodza

The Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Governs Agbodza, expressed concern as only ten individuals managed to register since the start of the limited voter registration on May 7.

“In the whole of the Adaklu constituency, only 10 people have been registered since morning on day 1. The EC must be sensitive to Ghanaians,” the Adaklu lawmaker told TV3’s Komla Klutse.

This slow turnout was attributed to the shutdown of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) IT system.

Agbodza urged the EC to prioritize sensitivity and facilitate more registrations onto the electoral roll.
The registration, targeting those who turned 18 since the last exercise, kicked off on May 7 and will run until May 27.

The EC plans to establish permanent centers at district offices and utilize mobile teams for harder-to-reach areas.

“Permanent centres will be set up at the District offices while mobile teams would be used to register eligible applicants in the difficult to access Electoral Areas. The list of registration centres will be provided to the Political Parties no later than twenty-one (21) days to the Registration exercise,” the EC noted.

Political parties will receive a list of registration centers twenty-one days before the exercise.

A collaboration intended for positive publicity has turned sour for McDan Group as Ghanaians express outrage towards the company’s CEO, Daniel Mckorley, following a partnership with Ghanaian vlogger Wode Maya.

Wode Maya’s documentary and interview on the success of Electrochem Ghana Limited, featuring Mckorley, triggered a wave of criticism from viewers on Facebook and YouTube.

MyNewsGh.com refrained from publishing most comments, citing editorial policy restrictions.

Additionally, controversies surround the leasing of Terminal One as a private jet terminal to McDan amid concerns of drug smuggling, as raised by officials from the Narcotics Control Commission.

McDan also has salt mining operations at the lagoon.

While Mckorley has garnered awards and recognition in Ghana’s business sector, this recent collaboration with Wode Maya has sparked intense public scrutiny and criticism, overshadowing his entrepreneurial achievements.

He highlighted a pervasive sense of betrayal among educators since 2009, citing unkept promises and a lack of concrete government support.

“Since 2009, teachers have been deceived, any time you go ask for something they say we are many, and there is a deliberate policy by government that teachers must be at the center. Where is the evidence?

“For the past eight years, the only allowance teachers have benefited is GH¢100, even that is professional development allowance, what about the teachers’ welfare? Teachers are in deprived areas and they are suffering.

“What will make the teachers to stop the agitations is that they must be given what they deserve,” Mr Tanko said.

Mr. Tanko emphasized that the key to quelling these protests lies in addressing teachers’ rightful demands and providing them with the support they deserve.
