‘Dumsor’ vigil is a waste of time; Ghana deserves better – Habiba Sinare

A prominent Ghanaian actress, Habiba Sinare, has voiced her opinion on the ongoing power outages, known as ‘dumsor,’ stating that a protest would be unnecessary.

During a discussion on United Showbiz, she expressed her belief that the government is aware of the challenges and would have acted if they intended to do so.

Sinare emphasized her reluctance to participate in any ‘dumsor’ protest, citing it as a potential waste of time.

She questioned the need for protests, highlighting the country’s struggles that have not gone unnoticed by international media.

“I won’t join any protest. Who said they don’t know we are suffering? What haven’t we done in this country for the International media to pick it up? Where are we? We are still where we are and worse. Ghana is a small country and we shouldn’t go through what we are going through.

“We are better than this. This dumsor thing there is nothing I can say or do about it because I don’t work at the Ministry of Energy. But it seems that it’s like we are not entitled to know more and nobody is entitled to explain anything to us. We deserve better. I prayed for Ghana during Ramadan and I hope we do well,” she said while speaking on Accra-based United Television.

While acknowledging the severity of the ‘dumsor’ situation, Sinare called for improved stability of power in healthcare facilities. She urged the government to prioritise this critical aspect.

As calls for protests grow among influential Ghanaians, Sinare’s perspective adds to the ongoing dialogue regarding the nation’s power crisis.

Court rejects R. Kelly’s appeal, upholds 20-Year sentence for child sex abuse

A Chicago court denied an appeal by the disgraced R&B singer Robert Kelly, known as R Kelly, to overturn his 20-year sentence for a child sex conviction in a ruling on Friday, April 26, 2024.

R Kelly, convicted on three charges of producing child sexual abuse images and three charges of enticing minors for sex, argued that Illinois’ old statute of limitations should have been applied, rather than the current law allowing charges while an accuser is still alive.

The old Illinois statute required prosecuting child sex crime charges within 10 years.

However, the appeals court dismissed this argument, describing it as an attempt by Kelly to evade charges “after employing a complex scheme to keep victims quiet.”

Kelly also contended that charges related to one accuser should have been separate from those involving three other accusers due to video evidence central to the Chicago trial.

Prosecutors asserted that the video depicted Kelly abusing a girl, identified as Jane, who testified for the first time, stating she was 14 when the video was recorded.

Despite Kelly’s arguments, the three-judge panel from the US appeals court pointed out that jurors acquitted him on seven of the 13 counts, “even after viewing those abhorrent tapes.”

Diana Asamoah recounts how an armed robber nearly ended the life of businessman Dr. Kwaku Oteng

Evangelist Diana Asamoah recently disclosed a harrowing incident involving Dr. Kwaku Oteng, where divine intervention averted a potentially fatal encounter with an armed robber.

This revelation came amidst the aftermath of her ‘assistant pastor’s’ arrest for embezzling GH₵4000 from her.

During her show on Angel FM, Asamoah narrated how an armed robber known as ‘Arafat’ had been stealthily stealing from the Angel Group of Companies CEO for a considerable period.

On one fateful day, Arafat’s robbery attempt escalated into a life-threatening situation as he aimed to silence Dr. Oteng permanently.

“Arafat pulled a gun on my brother Dr. Kwaku Oteng and took his money. He went with a gun because he intended to kill Dr. Oteng that very day,” Asamoah recounted, emphasising the gravity of the situation captured by CCTV cameras.

Asamoah, visibly dismayed by her assistant pastor’s betrayal, addressed criticisms regarding the arrest over what some deemed a trifling sum.

“The hands that do not work will not eat… People just want to reap where they did not sow,” she expressed, urging a more conscientious work ethic.

Her staunch defence of taking action against embezzlement resonated: “People are asking why I arrested the pastor for stealing GH₵4000. I would’ve made profits if I had invested that money into my business.”

The episode underscored not only the dangers faced by prominent figures like Dr. Oteng but also the broader ethical debates around accountability and honesty in professional spheres.

“What’s all this very annoying” – Nana Yaa Brefo fumes over incessant ‘dumsor’

Media personality, Nana Yaa Brefo, known for her outspoken nature, has expressed her frustration with the ongoing power cuts, commonly known as dumsor, which have provoked widespread anger among affected Ghanaians.

In a video shared on her Instagram page and viewed by GhanaWeb, Yaa Brefo criticized the lack of decisive action from both the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in resolving the power crisis.

She demanded a clear schedule for power outages to enable people to plan their daily activities and alleviate the resulting frustrations.

She exclaimed, “What nonsense is this? My lights just went off. They cut it for two hours, then restored it briefly. I had to endure the heat outside at midnight. They keep giving us flimsy excuses. The government should provide a timetable so we know when it will go off.”

Yaa Brefo’s comments echo the concerns raised by numerous individuals, including politicians, regarding the unstable power supply in various areas.

Despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s assertion during the recent State of the Nation’s Address (SONA) that his administration has avoided dumsor for seven years, the government and ECG have refrained from issuing a load-shedding timetable, attributing the irregular power supply to ongoing maintenance works.

Ghanaians love political parties more than the country’s welfare- Kofi Kinaata

Acclaimed music star known for hits like “Confessions,”  Kofi Kinaata recently spoke out about Ghana’s deepening political divisions.

In a candid interview, he highlighted how Ghanaians‘ unwavering loyalty to political parties is harming the nation’s progress.

Kinaata lamented the pervasive mindset where citizens prioritise their allegiance to parties over the country’s well-being.

He expressed frustration, noting that this mindset stifles discussions on critical issues, as people fear backlash and political labelling.

“In our country, politicians have made promises, but we see little change. Personally, I’ve lost hope,” Kinaata remarked in an interview with Graphic Online.

He elaborated on the challenges posed by intense partisan loyalties, stating, “People’s strong affiliations to parties hinder meaningful conversations.

Criticise party A, and their supporters attack you. Speak against party B, and you face similar backlash. It’s a chaotic situation.”

“Over the years, we have been sweet-talked to by politicians in this country, but nothing happens, and there is no change. For me, I’ve given up,” Graphic Online quoted him as saying.

“The people are making things difficult, so we cannot address issues because someone thinks he is for party A, so whatever you’re saying goes against party A, so don’t say. He is for party B, so he will still stand for his party even if he’s dying. People tend to love their party more than the country, so everything is in a mess.”

Kinaata’s comments shed light on the concerning trend where political allegiance eclipses national interests, impeding constructive dialogue and problem-solving.

Despite receiving invitations to join politics, including offers from the Movement for Change, Kofi Kinaata clarified that he has no plans to enter the political arena.

  • I call my music Afrofusion not Afrobeats – Davido

I call my music Afrofusion not Afrobeats – Davido

Nigerian music icon Davido has clarified that his music style should be categorized as Afrofusion, distancing himself from the widely-used term Afrobeat.

Afrobeat, famously pioneered by Fela Kuti, has become a blanket term for African music in general, regardless of the specific genre or style.

Davido expressed frustration at this labelling trend, noting that artists across various musical spectrums often get classified under Afrobeats, whether they lean towards R&B akin to SZA or Summer Walker, or rap styles reminiscent of Drake.

Many African musicians share this sentiment, feeling confined by the overarching categorization of Afrobeats regardless of their unique musical expressions.

Notably, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy had previously criticised this classification.

Speaking on the Business Untitled Podcast, Davido emphasised the global acceptance of African music, especially by the UK and later the US, which initially termed it Afrobeats.

Despite the convenience of having a genre label, Davido stressed that his music, which he terms Afrofusion, encapsulates a blend of influences that extend beyond a singular genre.

“The first place that accepted African music outside Africa was the UK before America later joined. The UK termed African music Afrobeats. I don’t get offended when we’ve been categorised as Afrobeats. I mean, we need a genre.

“It could be R&B or Afropop. I call my music Afrofusion but I’m not big on ‘O put Afrofusion on my song.’ I know how long it took for African music to become mainstream,” Davido stated.
His stance reflects a broader conversation within the African music industry about the need for nuanced genre distinctions to better represent the diverse musical landscape.

  • Why theatre space is not widely patronized in Ghana- George Quaye explains

Why theatre space is not widely patronized in Ghana- George Quaye explains

Renowned Ghanaian playwright and ImageBureau CEO, George Quaye, has shed light on why theatre in Ghana struggles with low patronage, attributing it to a historical perception of theatre as a free commodity.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Quaye highlighted that many Ghanaians have grown accustomed to consuming theatre without paying, a mindset rooted in the past when theatre productions were often offered at no cost.

Quaye emphasised the need to elevate this mindset, urging stakeholders to collaborate rather than compete.

“I’ve been asked many times why I share many people’s plays even when I’m running my plays. Why? Because we cannot compete. We need to collaborate.

“We cannot compete because we haven’t gotten to where the musicians have gotten to. Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy can compete. Sarkodie and Samini can compete. King Promise and KiDi, Kuami Eugene, they can all compete. They can because, globally, they have gotten recognition,” he said.

He drew parallels with the music industry’s global recognition, pointing out that while musicians like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy can command high ticket prices, theatre productions struggle to achieve the same level of patronage.

To foster growth, Quaye advocated for a collective effort to change people’s perceptions about theatre’s value, stressing that it’s an art form deserving of financial support and recognition.

There is a community in Ghana that still appreciates hip-pop music – E.L

Ghanaian music sensation Elom Adablah, known as E.L., shared his positive outlook on the rap scene in Ghana, emphasising that despite current trends, there’s a promising future for the genre.

In a candid conversation with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, E.L. acknowledged the shifting preferences in music consumption.

He noted that while some listeners may overlook the depth of rap lyrics today, there’s still a significant audience that values the art form.

“The attention span of today’s market is short, and people lean towards songs that offer immediate enjoyment,” he remarked, highlighting the prevailing desire for catchy tunes and danceable rhythms.

E.L. delved into regional disparities within the rap industry, contrasting the thriving rap narratives in South Africa with the challenges faced in West Africa.

He attributed this contrast to differing consumer preferences and industry structures.

Reflecting on his own journey, E.L. revealed how his initial focus on rap evolved as he adapted to market demands.

“I entered as a rapper during the mixtape era, but as I observed the landscape, I transitioned to singing, recognizing the appeal and success of hit songs in that realm,” he explained.

Addressing global promotion of rap music from Ghana, E.L. acknowledged a niche audience but highlighted the need for broader recognition to propel the genre forward.

“As compared to Ghana, I don’t think real consumers of hip-pop will subscribe deeply to any rap coming from Ghana, it is just a few of us.

“There is a community in Ghana that appreciates hip-pop music, but I don’t think you will see them coming out to do much because it is not a big deal and does not have a foothold here in Ghana,” he said.

Despite challenges, E.L.’s optimism underscores a belief in the enduring significance of rap music within Ghana’s vibrant music scene.

2Pac’s team threatens to drag Drake to court over use of late rapper’s AI-generated voice

The estate of Tupac Shakur has taken legal action against Drake for using an AI-generated version of Tupac’s voice in his song “Taylor Made Freestyle.”

According to court documents obtained by Complex, Drake has been served with a cease-and-desist letter by litigator Howard King, giving him 24 hours to remove the track or face legal consequences.

In the letter, the estate expresses disappointment over the unauthorised use of Tupac’s voice, labelling it a violation of Tupac’s publicity and legal rights, as well as an abuse of his legacy.

“The Estate is deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorised use of Tupac’s voice and personality,” the cease-and-desist letter allegedly reads.

“Not only is the record a flagrant violation of Tupac’s publicity and the estate’s legal rights, it is also a blatant abuse of the legacy of one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time. The Estate would never have given its approval for this use.”

The estate also criticises the use of Tupac’s voice to target Kendrick Lamar, a friend of the estate, in the song.

“The unauthorised, equally dismaying use of Tupac’s voice against Kendrick Lamar, a good friend to the Estate who has given nothing but respect to Tupac and his legacy publicly and privately, compounds the insult,” the letter continues.

Furthermore, the estate argues that the song has caused economic and reputational harm by misleading listeners into thinking Tupac endorses the lyrics.

Drake has been asked to provide details on how the AI-generated voice was created and the individuals or company responsible for its creation.

“If you do not comply, our client has authorized this firm to pursue all of its legal remedies including, but not limited to, an action for violation of … the estate’s copyright, publicity and personality rights and the resulting damages, injunctive relief, and punitive damages and attorneys’ fees,” the letter concludes.

As of now, Drake still has the song available on his Instagram but has not released it on streaming platforms.

The estate is open to informal negotiations if Drake meets their demands; otherwise, they are prepared to pursue legal remedies.

The song also features an AI-generated voice of Snoop Dogg, although Snoop has not announced plans for legal action and has reacted casually to the situation on social media.
