VIDEO: Watch Japanese politician’s emotional reply to how he used public funds

A 47-year-old provincial politician from Japan, Ryutaro Nonomura, has captured the internet’s attention after an emotional press conference where he tearfully tried to explain his extravagant use of public funds.

Nonomura, elected to the assembly in Hyogo, western Japan in 2011, is under suspicion for misusing 3 million yen (17,000) of official allowances, primarily on 195 trips to four locations in one year, including 106 visits to the same hot spring resort, all without proper documentation.

The footage of Nonomura’s press conference, where he wailed, banged his fists, and sobbed while giving unclear excuses, has been widely circulated on television chat shows.

During the three-hour event in Kobe, he expressed his passion for societal change through his role as an assembly member, repeatedly asking, “Don’t you understand?”

Social media users reacted strongly, with some questioning his suitability as a member of society, let alone an assembly member.

One Twitter user asked, “Is he alright as a member of society, let alone a member of an assembly?” while another compared his behaviour to that of a crying elementary school student.

Nonomura’s emotional outburst has garnered significant online attention, with one YouTube video of the incident reaching over 600,000 views by Wednesday afternoon.

Highlighting her careful selection process for a life partner, Rita proudly revealed that at the age of 22, she found her perfect match in Tony Edochie.

Police set free musicians arrested for insulting Ugandan Prez at wedding anniversary

Police have confirmed the release of eight members of the Crane Performers Group, who were previously apprehended on April 6 for allegedly disrupting President Yoweri Museveni’s speech at the wedding anniversary of former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

The event, celebrating Mr. Mbabazi’s 50th marriage anniversary to Jacqueline Mbabazi, took place at Kampala Serena Hotel on April 6.

Mr. Luke Owoyesigire, Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), verified the detainees’ released during a media briefing on April 8.

He stated that they were freed on the same day they were detained by the Special Forces Command (SFC).

Further inquiries were deferred to SFC spokesperson Maj Jimmy Omara, who indicated a lack of detailed information regarding the incident.

The alleged disruption occurred as President Museveni addressed the guests, with the Crane Performers reportedly criticising him in Runyankole for speaking excessively.

This action was perceived as disrespectful and caused surprise among the audience.

Security personnel, including Lt Tonny Komakech of the SFC, identified the Crane Performers as responsible for the disruption, leading to their arrest.

Among those apprehended were the group’s director, Gordon Kayovu, along with Edward Tugume, David Muvunyi, Walter Oleng, Simon Bebwa, Paul Ruduli, and Tonny Okello.

The detainees were facing charges under the Penal Code Act of 2024, particularly for allegedly insulting the President, a charge that carries a possible penalty of life imprisonment as per the law.

He not only highlighted the sound issues but also advocated for fair treatment regarding sound quality for all artists, stressing the need for an equal playing field to ensure optimal performances.

“Hold on, there are too many sound issues. It is messing up my whole performance, I am seriously not feeling this sh*t at all,” he remarked.

KMA begins Asafo market demolition; redevelopment into modern market

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has initiated the demolition of the unstable main storey-building in Asafo Market, aiming to prevent potential disasters.

This effort is part of a broader strategic plan by KMA, involving various developmental projects across the Metropolis.

The Assembly has already relocated all tenants for a six-month period to facilitate the construction of new market shops.

Upon completion, the project is expected to mitigate fire risks within the market, as emphasised by KMA Chief Executive Samuel Pyne.

The redevelopment, divided into three phases for minimal disruption, will transform the market with over 3,000 modern shops, dining areas, bulk breaking facilities, and enhanced infrastructure including a fire station and administrative offices.

Mayor Samuel Pyne highlighted the focus on modernization and safety, ensuring robust fire detection and combating systems are integrated.

“Our focus is to modernize the market to create a serene trading environment for the trader to trade in peace and tranquility by providing them appropriate security including protection against fire. It is going to be a modern market; the structures will not be wooden. We are also making sure the contractor will expedite action on-site to meet the terms and agreement in the contract we have signed. We are also going to monitor the work from day one to the end to ensure our expectations are met on the project because I personally don’t want the traders to stay home for a longer period.”

Additionally, plans for a new police station near the market aim to bolster security and promote commerce without compromising safety.

“Currently we are almost getting international funding from our partners to have a beautiful police station around the same area to cater for the security needs of the people. We have all these in mind to make the place a standard marketplace to promote commerce without any security threat.”
Relocated traders expressed support for the project, urging KMA to expedite construction to avoid prolonged disruptions to business activities.

Their cooperation reflects a shared interest in addressing safety and promoting a vibrant trading environment.

“We are not complaining much about the project and its effect on us because of the fruitful discussions we already had with the management of KMA. The project will serve our collective interest by addressing flooding and fire threats in the market. Our call to KMA is that they should expedite action on-site to meet the six-month deadline for the completion of the project’’.

BOG considers handing Gold for Oil implementation policy to commercial banks

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is contemplating a shift in strategy by potentially entrusting commercial banks with the implementation of the Gold for Oil Policy.

This move comes as the Central Bank reevaluates its role, aiming to prioritize core functions such as monetary policy and price stability maintenance.

Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Central Bank, emphasized the strategic value of the Gold for Oil Policy in bolstering the country’s reserves.

“It is a programme that we recommend to continue because it helped us in the period of crisis. We only want to make sure that this is done by a commercial bank so that we can have time to focus on our operations as a central bank. So this is the discussion that we are holding going forward but the ability to be able to exchange our natural resource directly for oil when oil prices get out of hand, we think that it is a very innovative programme.”

He reiterated the long-term benefits of the initiative, asserting its positive contribution to Ghana’s economic stability and development.

“So it is really about the central bank spreading itself too thin by trying to add gold for oil also into our business but we are fully focused on buying gold to build our reserves”, the Governor said to the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament, Dr. Addison articulated the rationale behind the potential transition.

He stressed the importance of streamlining the central bank’s focus while ensuring the continuity of a program that proved valuable during crises.

Despite acknowledging the limitations, Dr. Addison reaffirmed the Central Bank’s support for the government’s Gold4Oil policy, citing its instrumental role during economic challenges.

“This is an intervention which was very critical in the heat of the crisis, yes the foreign exchange market is functioning better than it was in 2022. Oil prices have come down much better than they were in 2022. The situation is much better now than it was in 2022 when the Gold4Oil policy was introduced.

“However, we think that it’s still an important programme for the government to have that option and to be able to empower commercial banks to undertake their activities. Should market sentiments change, which do every day, we don’t know what will happen tomorrow. And we will wake up and if we find ourselves in a situation where the prices are driving the pumps to where they were again. The government has an option to fall on. It’s a very innovative instrument.”

He highlighted the program’s effectiveness in managing oil price fluctuations and hinted at potential enhancements to Ghana’s gold reserves.

“There is going to be a big jump in gold holdings for Ghana,” he assured.

The envisaged handover to commercial banks signifies a strategic realignment aimed at optimizing operational efficiency within the banking sector while maintaining a robust economic safeguard for Ghana’s energy needs.

Gov’t pays Ghanaian cocoa farmers $47 more than Ivory Coast farmers – COCOBOD

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Fiifi Boafo has praised the achievements of the Akufo-Addo government in the cocoa sector despite facing criticism from the minority in Parliament.

Speaking on The Point of View on Citi TV, Boafo defended the government against accusations of shortchanging cocoa farmers, highlighting a 58% increase in the producer price for cocoa.

He pointed out that Ghanaian cocoa farmers have consistently received higher payments than their Ivorian counterparts over the past seven years, except for 2023.

“The difference between how much Ghana is paying cocoa farmers, and the Ivorians are paying cocoa farmers, we’re paying $47 more to our Ghanaian farmers compared to Ivorian farmers. And the people who told us to replicate what the Ivorians have done, now say that what we have done is wrong and we are cheating the cocoa farmers. If I’m asked to do something someone is doing and I do the same, do you accuse me of doing the wrong thing, no.

“Last year [2023] due to the exchange rate, the Ivorians’ price got better than Ghana’s. But the government in the last 7 years, with the exception of last year [2023] has paid better price to cocoa farmers as compared to the Ivorian counterparts, “  Fiifi Boafo stated.

Boafo refuted claims of exploitation, stating that Ghanaian cocoa farmers receive $47 more than those in Cote d’Ivoire, challenging accusations of cheating farmers.

“The premium levels are different I admit, but in Côte D’Ivoire, there’s nothing like cooling down periods for cocoa farmers. There’s nothing like a subsidised fertiliser given to cocoa farmers. All interventions COCOBOD is giving to farmers in Ghana, the Ivorian counterparts are not enjoying same.”

“We’re treating more of our farms affected, you can say today that the numbers are not looking good, but it’s as a result of an action taken to ensure going into the future, we are in a better position to produce cocoa,” he said.

Regarding lower production levels in Ghana compared to Cote d’Ivoire, Boafo attributed this to factors like infested farms, swollen shoot disease, and adverse weather conditions.

He emphasised the government’s actions for long-term sustainability in cocoa production.

Boafo also addressed allegations of cocoa smuggling, clarifying that the major smuggling point is at the Togo border, not the Ivory Coast.

Popular Ghanaian dance sensation Afronitaaa, also known as Danita Akosua Adomaah Yeboah, has announced that she is currently not pursuing any romantic relationships.

During a live interview on Hitz FM on April 8, Afronitaaa emphasized her dedication to achieving specific life goals, stating that her primary focus is on personal priorities.

She clarified that she intends to reconsider dating only after accomplishing her objectives.

“At the moment, my priorities take precedence. I have numerous aspirations to pursue, and I want to establish myself before diving into romantic commitments,” she explained.

When asked about potential suitors, she jokingly remarked, “I’ll bounce you like a tennis ball,” drawing laughter from the audience.

Afronitaaa acknowledged that she doesn’t receive many advances from men, attributing it to the assumption that she might reject them.

“It’s not necessarily negative, but I believe people hesitate to approach me because they fear rejection. Boys tend to think that way,” she remarked.

Despite this perception, she clarified that she maintains close friendships with males.

“I have many male friends. I don’t give off an intimidating vibe,” she added.

Sharing amusing encounters, Afronitaaa recounted various instances of being approached by men, including an elderly gentleman expressing interest in her.

I’ll not honor a gov’t that can’t get its priorities right – John Dumelo to NPP

Renowned Ghanaian actor, politician, and farmer John Dumelo has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its handling of educational priorities.

In a recent interview on Bola Ray’s Starr Chat, Dumelo condemned the government’s emphasis on distributing laptops and tablets, dismissing it as unworthy of praise.

Dumelo argued that the country faces more pressing challenges in education that demand immediate attention.

He highlighted the stark realities of students lacking basic necessities like shelter and food, making the laptop and tablet distribution initiative appear trivial in comparison.

“The educational sector is grappling with far more urgent issues than distributing laptops and tablets. Students are struggling to find a place to sleep and enough to eat, yet the government is fixated on these gadgets,” Dumelo remarked.

Expressing disappointment, Dumelo asserted that the government’s actions merit no commendation or recognition. “I refuse to salute the government for such superficial gestures. Students deserve substantial improvements,” he emphasised.

Dumelo’s critique underscores the need for a reevaluation of priorities within the education sector, urging authorities to address fundamental challenges rather than focusing on superficial initiatives.

Agyapa Deal scandal, Cecilia Dapaah, others forgotten ; NPP/Bawumia gov’t encouraged by silence of Ghanaians – X user

An X user has raised concerns about the apparent collective amnesia surrounding various scandals linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the administration of Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the X user identified Ghana Mu Nsemsem, Ghanaians have not expressed enough outrage over these issues.

Among the scandals highlighted by Ghana Mu Nsemsem are the controversial Agyapa Deal, the SSNIT $72 million procurement and software installation, and the Cecilia Dapaah scandal involving large sums of money found in her home.

Despite these controversies, there has been a lack of accountability, with no individuals facing jail time for their alleged involvement.

The persistent silence on these matters, as noted by Ghana Mu Nsemsem, has only emboldened corruption within the NPP government.

“Agyapa Deal scandal, SSNIT $72million on the procurement & installation of a software for their operations. Upon all these scandals, nobody has been jailed. Cecilia Dapaah scandal has also been forgotten. Our silence on these scandals have emboldened this NPP/Bawumia gov’t,” X user stated.

The recent case of cash found in Cecilia Dapaah’s home had initially sparked public outcry and calls for her resignation, yet the broader issue of corruption within the government persists largely unaddressed.

As questions continue to arise about the origins of such significant amounts of money and the lack of consequences for those implicated in corruption scandals, the public debate around accountability and governance in Ghana remains fervent.

Mahama shared laptops after eliminating 2,000 schools under trees; what has Akufo-Addo done –  Sammy Gyamfi asks Anyidoho

National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi compared the achievements of John Dramani Mahama’s administration in the educational sector to those of Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Gyamfi emphasised that while Mahama’s government focused on crucial educational needs like providing laptops, textbooks, and eliminating schools under trees, the current administration’s priorities are misplaced.

He criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for distributing tablets while essential resources like capitation grants, textbooks, and chairs remain lacking, pointing out disparities in education access and quality.

Gyamfi’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate over educational policies and resource allocation in Ghana.

He urged Koku Anyidoho to stop spreading falsehoods and have a retentive memory of Mahama’s accomplishments.

“Somebody should tell @KokuAnyidoho that, at the time, the NDC/Mahama government was providing laptops for students, we were not owing six(6) terms of capitation grant; we had provided basic education students all their core textbooks and we had eliminated more than 2000 schools under trees. We had provided basic school children with free uniforms and sandals. Also, we did not have more than two (2) million children in school without chairs and desks.

At a time when the incumbent NPP government has failed to provide text books to basic school children almost 5 years after the introduction of a new curriculum, government cannot expect praises for the provision of tablets to students at an inflated unit cost of GHS3,200,” Sammy Gyamfi stated in a tweet.

NPP’s provision of tablets to students deserves no praises amidst lack of textbooks, desks – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has strongly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he considers a misplaced priority in distributing tablets to students.

According to Gyamfi, the NPP does not deserve praise for this initiative, citing several unresolved issues that he believes should take precedence.

Gyamfi highlighted concerns such as the lack of textbooks, delays in capitation grants, and the existence of schools under trees as more urgent matters requiring government attention.

He compared the NPP’s tablet distribution, which he claimed comes at an inflated unit cost of GHS3,200, to the NDC’s efforts during their tenure, including providing laptops for students without accumulating arrears in capitation grants, ensuring access to core textbooks, and eliminating thousands of schools under trees.

In a tweet, Gyamfi directed a message to Koku Anyidoho, stating that nearly five years after the introduction of a new curriculum, the NPP government has failed to supply textbooks to basic school children.

He concluded by asserting that the government cannot expect accolades for distributing tablets at such a high cost while fundamental educational needs remain unaddressed.

“Somebody should tell @KokuAnyidoho that, at the time, the NDC/Mahama government was providing laptops for students, we were not owing six(6) terms of capitation grant; we had provided basic education students all their core textbooks and we had eliminated more than 2000 schools under trees.

“NPP government has failed to provide text books to basic school children almost 5 years after the introduction of a new curriculum, government cannot expect praises for the provision of tablets to students at an inflated unit cost of GHS3,200,” Sammy Gyamfi stated in a tweet.

Deputy NSS executive director Gifty Oware’s husband allegedly appointed to GFA board

A storm of accusations has erupted on social media as Twitter user Kojo Dynamic levels serious allegations against Deputy NSS executive director Gifty Oware.

The accusations centre on claims that Oware utilised her influence to secure a job for her husband, Peter Mensah, at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) executive committee, allegedly leveraging her political connections for personal gain.

This controversy comes hot on the heels of public scrutiny surrounding Oware’s alleged involvement in a corruption scandal related to scholarship funds.

The scandal, brought to light by media agency Fourth Estate, implicates Oware-Mensah among several affluent individuals benefiting from scholarships meant for financially disadvantaged but academically gifted Ghanaians.

Specifically, reports indicate that Oware-Mensah secured a government scholarship worth GBP18,450 to pursue an MSc in Development Policy and Politics at the University of Birmingham in 2020, allegedly obtained three years into her tenure at the Secretariat.

When pressed for comment, Oware-Mensah initially denied knowledge of the scholarship, promising to follow up but subsequently becoming unreachable.

Her decision to deactivate certain social media accounts has also fueled speculation regarding potential backlash following The Fourth Estate’s expose.

In addition to her role at the NSS, Oware-Mensah is known for owning Berry Ladies FC, a team competing in Ghana’s women’s premier league.

Meanwhile, concerns from the 2023/24 NSS personnel regarding outstanding allowance arrears add further pressure on the government to address these issues promptly.

  • I rejected $50,000 offer to compose a reggae song for a political party – Shasha Marley

I rejected $50,000 offer to compose a reggae song for a political party – Shasha Marley

Ghanaian reggae musician Shasha Marley has made headlines after revealing that he turned down a lucrative offer of $50,000 from a political party in Ghana.

The offer, which came with the condition of composing a campaign song for a political party, was presented to him earlier this year.

Speaking about the experience, Shasha Marley shared that he was initially excited about the opportunity when an old friend contacted him about the deal.

The prospect of a significant financial gain kept him awake at night as he contemplated the offer.

The following day, he met with his friend to discuss the details of the proposal.

However, despite the allure of the substantial sum, Shasha Marley ultimately decided to reject the offer.

The turning point came when he consulted with his wife, who advised him against getting involved in politics due to its complexities and potential controversies.

“You will be surprised and amazed to know that this year [2024], I rejected a $50,000 offer from a political party to do a reggae song for them…

“I had a call from a very old friend of mine who is not a politician, saying he has a big deal for me. I could not sleep that night. The following day, we met and he explained to me…

“When I returned home and briefed my wife, she advised me against it due to the politics involved, and eventually I agreed and rejected the offer, ” Shasha told Abeiku Santana on the Atuu show aired on UTV.

The musician’s decision sheds light on the intricate relationship between the music industry and political parties during election periods in Ghana.

It’s common for political parties to enlist musicians to create campaign songs aimed at resonating with the public and garnering support.

In Ghana’s political landscape, notable musicians like Diana Asamoah and Daddy Lumba have composed campaign songs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while Jewel Ackah famously did the same for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

These songs play a significant role in shaping public perception and influencing voter sentiment.

Shasha Marley’s rejection of the offer underscores the ethical considerations and personal convictions that artists navigate when engaging with political entities.

While the financial incentives may be substantial, many artists, like Shasha Marley, prioritise maintaining independence and steering clear of potential controversies that may arise from political affiliations.

Overall, Shasha Marley’s stance reflects the nuanced decisions artists often face in balancing their artistic integrity with external opportunities, especially in the realm of politics where allegiances can be polarising.

“Bola Ray should sack Serwaa Amihere or else we won’t give him peace”- Popular TikToker

A TikTok influencer has demanded accountability regarding the leaked romantic video allegedly featuring Serwaa Amihere and businessman Henry Fritz.

The influencer, whose identity remains undisclosed, emphasised that the situation would have unfolded differently had it involved other public figures like Abena Korkor or Shatta Wale.

Expressing concern over potential bias, the TikToker mentioned that GHOne TV under Bola Ray’s leadership might have sensationalised the matter if different personalities were implicated.

Calling for decisive action, the TikTok personality urged EIB Network’s Bola Ray to consider dismissing Serwaa Amihere to protect the media house’s reputation.

Additionally, they urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to impose sanctions such as a ban on Serwaa Amihere.

The TikTok influencer highlighted a perceived double standard, suggesting that the involved media personalities might have reacted more vocally had the leaked video featured individuals other than their colleague.

“Bola Ray and his group Nana Aba and Serwaa Amihere would have blown the matter out of proportion if there was a leaked video involving Abena Korkor  and Shatta Wale; however since the issue is involving one of their own, they are mysteriously silent. Bola Ray should do the needful by issuing a sack for Serwaa Amihere and NCA should place a ban on her,” the Popular Tiktoker stated.
