50 to 100 corrupt officials must fall like former MASLOC CEO – Bridget Otoo tells next gov’t

Renowned media personality Bridget Otoo has voiced her approval of the recent sentencing of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Attionu to 10 years in prison for causing substantial financial loss to the state.

Otoo believes this stern punishment sets a crucial precedent in the fight against corruption in Ghana.

In her statement, Otoo expressed her expectations for the upcoming government, urging them to emulate this decisive action by incarcerating 50 to 100 government officials involved in financial malpractice.

“Dear next gov’t, I hope you learn from this example and Jail 50 to 100 government officials. Let Ghanaians know just how much this gov’t has stolen!..,” she wrote on X

She emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who misuse public funds, highlighting the impact of such actions on the citizens who entrusted them with power.

The sentencing of Sedina Attionu, along with former COO Daniel Axim, stems from a case initiated in 2019.

The charges against them include embezzlement amounting to GH¢3.19 million, deliberate financial loss to the state of GH¢1.97 million, unauthorised commitments leading to GH¢61.74 million in government obligations, and other financial misconduct totaling GH¢22.15 million.

The court’s decision to proceed with Attionu’s trial in absentia underscores the seriousness of the charges.

This move followed her failure to return from a permitted trip to the United States for medical treatment, prompting legal actions against her sureties, including former GNPC CEO Alex Mould and actor Gavivina Tamakloe.

The case revealed a series of alleged fraudulent transactions involving MASLOC funds, including investments in a microfinance company and subsequent demands for interest payments despite earlier refunds.

Investigations exposed discrepancies and potential misappropriation of funds by Attionu, leading to the legal proceedings resulting in her conviction and sentencing.

Otoo’s endorsement of the judicial outcome reflects a growing public sentiment for stringent measures against corruption in Ghana, urging continuous efforts to uphold transparency and accountability in governance.

Bollywood star Salman Khan’s home targeted in gun attack, two arrested

Police in India have apprehended two members of a criminal gang involved in a shooting incident targeting the residence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

The incident, linked to the notorious Bishnoi gang, stemmed from Khan’s past confrontation with the group over the killing of two antelopes.

The gang, affiliated with a sect that reveres the antelope as sacred, has harboured animosity towards Khan since the 1998 incident in Rajasthan.

The recent attack, where five shots were fired at Khan’s apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra neighbourhood, marked the latest in a series of threats the actor has faced.

The suspects, identified as Vicky Gupta, 24, and Sagar Kumar Palak, 21, were apprehended in Gujarat’s Kutch district following their confession to the crime.

The attack took place early on Sunday morning, but fortunately, Khan and his family were unharmed.

The Bishnoi gang, led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, had previously attempted to harm Khan for the antelope killings.

Bishnoi, currently imprisoned for various crimes including murder, allegedly orchestrated the attack through his brother, Anmol, whose involvement was traced back to Canada via a Facebook post.

Police investigations revealed that the attackers had surveilled Khan’s movements for days, renting a room near his apartment for a month before carrying out the assault.

A coordinated effort involving police from multiple states led to the arrest of the perpetrators.
Gupta and Palak appeared before a Mumbai court, with the city’s crime branch seeking additional time to gather evidence for their prosecution.

They are currently in custody awaiting their next court appearance on 25th April.

  • Police fail to arrest GCABA in SA rapper AKA’s murder case over insufficient evidence

Police fail to arrest GCABA in SA rapper AKA’s murder case over insufficient evidence

A senior police investigator involved in the probe of rapper Kiernan Forbes’ murder, known as AKA, has stated that authorities will not arrest KwaZulu-Natal businessman Mfundo Gcaba at this time.

This decision comes as there is insufficient concrete evidence linking him to the assassination.

The incident, which occurred on February 10 last year, saw AKA, whose real name is Kiernan Forbes, and his close friend Tibz Motsoane shot and killed outside a Durban restaurant.

Gwabeni, identified as a taxi boss and a suspect in the case, is alleged to have received R800,000 to pay the hitmen responsible for the double homicide.

During their investigation, police discovered that Gcaba had transferred the substantial amount into Gwabeni’s account.

“The money and the two calls between him (Gcaba) and Gwabeni are not sufficient to effect an arrest or bring him in for questioning.

“The police want to establish a motive and on whose instructions Gwabeni was acting. We believe there are more powerful people involved here,” the police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Gwabeni, in turn, reportedly paid over R133,000 to each of the other suspects involved in carrying out the hit.

Despite these findings, a police officer familiar with the details of the Forbes murder case explained that connecting Gcaba directly to the murders remains challenging.

The officer emphasised that the money transfer and phone calls between Gcaba and Gwabeni are not sufficient grounds for arrest or questioning.

The police source, speaking anonymously, hinted at the involvement of more powerful individuals and the need to establish motives and instructions behind Gwabeni’s actions.

When questioned about Gcaba’s status despite being mentioned in court, KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations into the matter.

Asanteman’s plush, magnificent ‘Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall’

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked a historic milestone on Monday, April 15, 2024, by unveiling the grand Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Jubilee Hall, a spectacular addition to the Ashanti Kingdom.

The newly commissioned hall, as detailed on manhyiapalace.org, boasts a blend of traditional and ultramodern architecture, featuring a 400-capacity cocktail lounge, offices, a 2000-capacity fully air-conditioned and acoustically designed hall, approximately 60 washrooms, a spacious parking lot, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Additionally, it includes a 150-capacity car park and expansive compound.

The interior showcases intricate traditional designs, including a three-dimensional representation of the Golden Stool on the walls, depictions of a talking drum player, and various Adinkra symbols.

During the commissioning ceremony, Juabenhene Nana Otu Siriboe II highlighted the hall’s multifunctional purpose, mentioning that it would host private Asanteman meetings, cultural performances, symposiums, and various events, serving as a hub for community gatherings and celebrations.

“The construction of the building was done inconspicuously. His Majesty informed me about it when I was elected to chair the 25th Anniversary Planning Committee and brought me here to see it. I later met the members of the committee to jaw-jaw to request that it be named after him. This will be a remarkable legacy to his name forever. This is one of the many things His Majesty has done and the next generations will come to meet the building with his name and the fact that it is taking place during his Silver Jubilee,” he said.

The Juabenhene also emphasized that the hall was named after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to immortalize his legacy for generations to come, noting that the construction was discreetly undertaken, with the Asantehene personally funding the project instead of relying on sub-chiefs’ contributions.

“This remarkable legacy will forever bear His Majesty’s name, showcasing his dedication and vision for the Ashanti Kingdom,” remarked Nana Otu Siriboe II.

Ghanaian actor Kwaku Manu has emphasized the critical importance of choosing the right life partner, cautioning individuals to be discerning in their selection process.

In a recent TikTok live session, Manu stressed that marriage, being a divine institution for procreation, demands careful consideration in partner choice.

Manu highlighted the potential risks of marrying individuals with incompatible attitudes or dishonest character traits, noting that such unions could lead to personal downfall and even affect business ventures.

He urged people to prioritise honesty and compatibility in their partners to ensure a successful and fulfilling marriage.

“Marriage is a significant commitment, and marrying the wrong person can have severe consequences. Dishonesty, in particular, can be more detrimental than other issues,” Manu advised, urging vigilance in partner selection to avoid future complications.

“Marriage is one of the most expensive things in the world because it is God’s wish and command. Some people say things are thriving for them after marriage but if you marry a satanic person, it can lead to your downfall. There are instances where the woman is honest but the man might be a liar.

“When the woman finds out later, it could jeopardize the relationship. A dishonest woman is more dangerous than one who engages in extra-marital affairs. One of the things I detest in life is lies, such people should be feared,” he advised.

“Award is a mere illusion, it’s just plastic“ – R2Bees perspective on award schemes

Renowned music duo R2Bees, composed of Omar Sterling (Paedae) and Mugeez, recently spoke out about their perspective on awards and why they prioritise impact over accolades.

Paedae emphasised their stance, focusing on impacting lives through their music rather than chasing awards.

He shared how their past struggles, including basic necessities like food, shaped their outlook.

Despite their current success with lucrative opportunities from live shows, streaming, and endorsements, they remain indifferent to awards, considering them as mere illusions that don’t reflect true talent and hard work.

“Award is a mere illusion, it’s just a plastic. When you win an award, it’s pride and in life anything that magnifies your ego will kill you. So no need putting your hope and life in praises and recognition, it will kill you,” Paedae stated.

He highlighted the dangers of ego inflation and how putting too much emphasis on awards can be detrimental.

“We live in an abundant world and we are killing ourselves with competition. For you to win an award, it means someone has to lose, why can’t we all win together? Putting too much emphasis on awards is where our industry has got it all wrong,” he stated.

Paedae continued saying, “award scheme is not even an event that celebrates artistes because most of them will go home sad. Everybody has worked so hard, for you to be nominated it means you’ve done so well, so why didn’t people and the board like it to vote you as winner.”

Paedae also revealed that many of their awards are kept with friends who collected them on their behalf, further questioning the purpose of award schemes in celebrating talent.

The duo’s perspective challenges the industry’s focus on competition and highlights the importance of meaningful impact over accolades that may not necessarily represent true success.

Highlife is still relevant; not dead – Lucky Mensah

Renowned Ghanaian highlife maestro, Lucky Mensah, has recently emphasized the everlasting importance of the highlife genre during an insightful interview on Connect 97.1 FM’s mid-morning show with host Nana Yaw Gyebi.

The “Aduu sum) akwadu” hit maker passionately asserted his belief in highlife’s enduring value, rebuffing claims that the genre has diminished in significance.

Mensah expressed no regrets about choosing highlife music as his path, firmly stating, “Highlife has not lost its value as far as Ghana music is concerned; highlife can never die, and I don’t regret choosing the highlife genre.”

Mensah’s sentiment resonates widely within Ghana’s music landscape, evident in his hit songs like “I miss you” and “Old school.”

He acknowledged the ongoing debate about highlife’s relevance but pointed out its resurgence, citing platforms like TikTok as catalysts for renewed popularity.

However, Mensah didn’t shy away from addressing contemporary challenges, including alterations in rhythm and a lack of lyrical depth among newer artists.

He urged the new generation to learn from highlife veterans like Ampadu, Oheneba Kisi, Kofi B, and Ofori Amposah, emphasising the importance of preserving highlife’s essence while embracing innovation.

“The new crop of artists are changing the rythm of highlife and they lack lyrical content which is worrying. If you listen to the likes of Ampadu, Oheneba Kisi, Kofi B and Ofori Amposah etc and compare it to recent highlife you will understand what I’m saying. They have to learn from the veterans,” he explained.

Mensah’s unwavering confidence in highlife’s resilience serves as both a tribute to its enduring legacy and a clarion call for future artists to uphold its traditions while pushing creative boundaries.

  • Any president who tries to fight corruption in Ghana will die in 2 weeks – Okyeame Kwame

Any president who tries to fight corruption in Ghana will die in 2 weeks – Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame is advocating for a fundamental change in mindset as the key to tackling the nation’s challenges.

In his view, entrenched corruption within the political landscape has hindered significant progress, making it imperative to focus on shaping the mindset of the next generation.

Speaking candidly, Okyeame Kwame expressed doubts about the current political climate’s ability to effect substantial reforms, citing pervasive corruption and potential threats to those who challenge the status quo.

He asserted that neither the NDC nor the NPP can offer the solutions Ghana needs, emphasising that change must start within families.

“The issue we face is a mindset problem,” Okyeame Kwame stated, highlighting the inability of a corrupt system to rectify itself and the risks associated with challenging it. “It’s not about money; it’s about morality.”

“NDC/NPP cannot help Ghana; family is what can help Ghana. The problem affecting us as a people is a problem of the mind. The corrupt system cannot fix itself; it makes a lot of people rich and happy. If a president wants to come and fight corruption in the country right now, he will be dead in 2 weeks. It’s not about pay; it’s not about money; it’s about morality,” he asserted.

Attributing corruption to the prevailing mindset, Okyeame Kwame proposed instilling incorruptibility in youth early on as the most effective strategy.

He underscored the responsibility of every Ghanaian in shaping the nation’s future, urging parents to raise children with values that oppose corruption.

“Politicians reflect society; if they are corrupt, it reflects on us,” Okyeame Kwame remarked, stressing the importance of training children to reject corrupt practices.

“The politician was put in power by you and me; they are a representation of us, so if they are corrupt, it shows that you are corrupt. I agree that politicians are causing problems, but as you fight the politicians, train your child not to think like a politician. My vision is that we train our children to be incorruptible so that they will grow up and do away with this corrupt system. That is the only way I think Ghana would develop. Let us focus on training the young ones now,” he emphasised.

He envisioned a future where morally upright youth lead Ghana towards development by dismantling the corrupt system.
Regarding current politicians, Okyeame Kwame adopted a pragmatic view, focusing on the inevitability of change over time.

He advocated for cultivating selflessness in children to ensure a more positive and transparent future for Ghana.

  • I prefer to remain neutral – Okyeame Kwame on rejecting offer to join Bawumia’s manifesto committee

I prefer to remain neutral – Okyeame Kwame on rejecting offer to join Bawumia’s manifesto committee

Ghanaian Hiplife icon Okyeame Kwame has shed light on his decision to turn down a position on the Manifesto Committee for Creative Arts under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The committee, chaired by Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of the National Film Authority, included diverse members from the creative arts sector, among them Okyeame Kwame and actor Prince David Osei.

Okyeame Kwame explained his choice in an interview with YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon, revealing that although initially considering the offer, he opted to remain apolitical due to contractual obligations.

“Somebody called me and said that they wanted me to be part of the team. I said okay at first. Even my children were excited. It felt good.

“But then I remembered the contracts that I signed with various organizations and in those contracts, I was supposed to remain ‘apolitical’ or ‘neutral’.

“So I called this person and said that I would not officially be joining the team, I could only put my ideas forward. I remember telling that person twice. The person didn’t say anything,” Okyeame Kwame disclosed.

Despite communicating his decision to contribute ideas unofficially, his name still appeared on the committee list, prompting him to clarify his stance through a formal letter.

“That is why I had to write a letter to say that I had not agreed to do this on my terms as a non-partisan participant,” he said.

The artist expressed frustration with Ghana’s political landscape, contrasting it with the more relaxed approach in the United States, where artists openly align with political parties without facing significant repercussions.

“Does our democracy allow that? In the US, artists can openly support a political party but still get patronised.

“In Ghana, it’s different here. You can’t support a political party and move on normally. There is no such thing as political neutrality in Ghana,” he said.

Okyeame Kwame highlighted the challenge of maintaining political neutrality in Ghanaian society, emphasising the complexities faced by creatives in navigating political affiliations.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is gearing up to take legal measures against customers who remain in arrears by the end of May 2024, with plans to publicly disclose names and outstanding amounts in national newspapers.

The Public Relations Manager at GWCL, Stanley Martey, emphasized the necessity of stricter actions due to the significant impact of customer indebtedness on the company’s operations.

Currently facing accumulated debts amounting to approximately 1.2 billion cedis over a decade, GWCL aims to sustain and enhance its services by collaborating with customers on feasible payment solutions.

“We need to take more harsher steps. We are giving customers who are indebted to us up to the middle of May to settle their bills. If they fail to do that, then we will name and shame, ” Stanley Martey stated.

Martey emphasised the importance of water bill revenues for infrastructure maintenance, service continuity, and expansion projects.

“Accumulated debts hinder the company’s ability to sustain its operations efficiently, maintaining existing systems, infrastructure, uninterrupted services, and undertaking expansion projects to provide essential water services to the unserved and underserved communities.

“The revenue generated from water bills is crucial for sustaining and improving the water infrastructure and our services across the country. The company aims to collaborate with customers to find feasible solutions, including implementing flexible payment arrangements for those with substantial debts and obvious challenges.

ECG’s attribution of power outages (dumsor) to transformer faults false – PURC

The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has revealed discrepancies in the Electricity Company of Ghana‘s (ECG) attribution of power outages to transformer faults during peak hours.

Following an extensive analysis of data provided by ECG, PURC found that only 3 out of 647 outage incidents from January to March 2024 were due to transformer overload.

The analysis, encompassing 715 transformer details, indicated that 31 were under 70% load, 595 were between 70-100%, and 89 were overloaded beyond 100%.

Contrary to ECG’s claims, the majority of outages during peak hours were attributed to load management operations by GRIDCo and other unrelated faults.

Furthermore, PURC noted that out of 4142 total outages in ECG’s operational areas during the same period, 165 were planned outages, representing 3.98% of the total.

However, only 40 of these planned outages were supported by public notices, while 125 lacked notices altogether.

Additionally, 38 out of the 40 notices failed to comply with the required three-day statutory notice, as per Regulation 39 of L.I. 2413.

Consequently, PURC has imposed a fine of Five Million, Eight Hundred and Sixty-Eight Thousand Ghana Cedis on ECG board members for their failure to adhere to statutory notice requirements during planned outages, which occurred 163 times this year.

    See statement below:

“The Commission requested data on ECG transformers to validate public statements made by ECG attributing system-wide outages in the distribution network to transformer overloads.

“Analysis of the data submitted showed that out of 715 transformer details submitted, 31 were loaded less than 70%, 595 were loaded between 70-100% and 89 were loaded above 100%.

“The data submitted by ECG was further compared to the total outage data provided by ECG for the period January to March 18, 2024. The Commission established that 647outage incidents occurred between 7 pm and 11 pm.

“Of these 647 outage incidents, only3 were planned outages relating to transformers. The analyses showed that the majority ofthe outages between 7 pm to 11 pm were as a result of load management operations by GRIDCo and faults unrelated to overloaded transformers.

“ECG’s attribution of the outages between 7 pm and 11 pm to transformer overload was therefore not factually accurate.”

A well-known master of ceremony (MC) and entertainment pundit based in Kumasi,  Portfolio has raised concerns about the apparent decline in music concert bookings for Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie.

In a recent social media post on Monday, April 15, Portfolio pointed out that despite Sarkodie’s stature as a BET award-winning artist, he hasn’t been seen performing at many shows apart from those he organizes himself.

The award ceremony will become an annual tradition running until 2033.

Expressing his gratitude, Mahama stated, “Gilliam’s influential work, introduced to me during my studies by mentor Kąrî’kạchä Seid’ou, has remained a profound source of inspiration.

“I was first introduced to Gilliam’s important work as a student by my mentor Kąrî’kạchä Seid’ou, and it has been greatly influential on me ever since,” Mahama said in a statement. “The most important aspect of any community is to share their many gifts, even if they are born out of precarity, for within that point do we expand freedom for all life forms.”

Community sharing of diverse talents, even amidst challenges, is pivotal to expanding freedom for all.”

A jury comprising five distinguished individuals, including Annie Gawlak, Gilliam’s widow and president of his foundation; Courtney J. • Having your partner as your manager is the best – Celestine Donkor

Having your partner as your manager is the best – Celestine Donkor

Renowned gospel artist from Ghana, Celestine Donkor recently shared her belief that having a partner as a manager, especially for female artists, is highly beneficial.

In an interview with TV3, she expressed how having her husband as her manager has been incredibly advantageous for her career.

Donkor reflected on their journey, starting from the beginning and growing together in the music industry.

She emphasised that having her husband as her manager has been “the best thing” for her.

“I think, from my experience, it’s the best thing to ever happen to a female artiste. It’s the best thing that can happen to you. My husband and I started from scratch, he was a businessman who was into imports and exports and then he came into music [doing it on a full-time basis].”

They began when he transitioned from a background in imports and exports to managing her music full-time.

Working together has not only strengthened their bond but has also brought joy to their travels and performances, both locally and internationally.

“We can go like a month back to back on the road. Which husband will be staying at home for you? It will be really difficult if you are not on the field with your husband. It’s all part of the fun. It’s even better because we travel together. So we get to enjoy the other things.”

Donkor highlighted the flexibility of being able to travel extensively without her husband having to stay at home.

However, she advised that for such a partnership to succeed, there must be a shared interest in music between the couple.

“You need to find out if your partner is, first of all, interested in doing it. If your partner is interested, even if that interest is just 10 or 20 per cent, I think you are good to go. You just need to consult, get information on what the job really entails, and then learn on the job.”

She suggested assessing the partner’s level of interest and willingness to learn about the industry to ensure a harmonious collaboration.

Overall, Donkor’s experience underscores the potential benefits of having a partner as a manager in the music industry, particularly for female artists.
