Ghanaian medical professional who relocated to UK wins national award

Ghanaian nurse making waves in the UK, Ebenezer Akore Yeboah, has been celebrated for his groundbreaking research on reducing carbon emissions within the National Health Service (NHS).

The accolade, bestowed by the UK government, recognizes Yeboah’s dedication to environmental sustainability in healthcare.

Yeboah’s doctoral research, spotlighted by the BBC, delved into strategies to curb the NHS’s carbon footprint.

His study revealed that a significant portion of England’s carbon emissions—around 4%—stemmed from NHS activities.

By addressing issues like single-use plastic waste, efficient waste management, and energy consumption, Yeboah’s work underscored the vital role healthcare professionals play in combating climate change.

At his post in University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, where he serves as an emergency department nurse and a PhD researcher at Coventry University, Yeboah engaged in a global study involving 500 individuals across 56 nations.

His efforts earned recognition from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), culminating in an invitation to an international conference.

Reflecting on his journey, Yeboah expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded in the UK. “It’s been a beautiful journey—the UK is a land of opportunity,” he remarked. “In Ghana, I read about the RCN in textbooks, and now I’m part of it and have won a national award.”

“When people are displaced by situations created by climate change, health professionals are the ones to look after them and when we are doing that we are adding to the carbon footprint,” he is quoted to have said by the BBC.

“It’s been a beautiful journey – the UK is a land of opportunity when I look at how much I’ve been able to achieve in just over two years.”

He added, “In Ghana, I read about the RCN in textbooks and now I’m part of it and have won a national award”.

His work not only highlights the importance of sustainability in healthcare but also advocates for comprehensive training and eco-conscious practices among healthcare providers.

  • Mahama will be vindicated if Akufo-Addo fails to release KPMG report on GRA-SML deal – Martin Kpebu

Mahama will be vindicated if Akufo-Addo fails to release KPMG report on GRA-SML deal – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has raised concerns over President Akufo-Addo‘s delay in releasing the outcome of investigations into the controversial KPMG report on the GRA-SML deal.

Kpebu asserts that the prolonged delay since the report was submitted to Akufo-Addo is problematic and should worry Ghanaians.

In an interview on TV3, Kpebu highlighted that if Akufo-Addo continues to stall on making the report public, it could vindicate former President Mahama.

He pointed out the contrast between Mahama’s transparency in releasing the GIDA corruption report and Akufo-Addo’s reluctance with the KPMG report, suggesting a lack of justification for the delay.

“ Mahama made public the GIDA corruption report whereas Akufo-Addo is refusing to make public the KPMG report on the GRA-SML deal. This shows that Mahama is vindicated,” Martin Kpebu stated.

Early this year in January, the President appointed KPMG to audit the contracts entered into between GRA and SML and subsequently directed the Ministry of Finance and GRA to suspend the performance of the contracts, pending the submission of the audit report, including any payments presently envisaged under their terms.

This came after an exposé by the Fourth Estate that alleged that Ghana is paying millions to SML for no work done.

After months of conducting its audit, KPMG on March 27, submitted its audit report to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Director of Communications at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 27th March 2024, received from KPMG its report on the audit conducted on the transactions between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML).

He said the president is studying the findings of the audit report, and will, in due course, make his decisions known to the Ghanaian people.

In a post on his Facebook page, Mr Arihin said “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Wednesday, 27th March 2024, received from KPMG its report on the audit conducted, at the behest of the President, on the transactions between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML). President Akufo-Addo is studying the findings of the audit report, and will, in due course, make his decisions known to the Ghanaian people.

“It will be recalled that on 2nd January 2024, the President appointed KPMG to audit the contracts entered into between GRA and SML, and subsequently directed the Ministry of Finance and GRA to suspend the performance of the contracts, pending the submission of the audit report, including any payments presently envisaged under their terms.”

  • Power export halted temporarily; domestic power supply needs prioritization – Atta Akyea

Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Energy, Samuel Atta Akyea has assured that Ghana will fulfil all contractual agreements with neighboring countries for power exports.

Despite challenges, he emphasised the government’s commitment to meeting obligations and avoiding breaches of contract.

He made the comments in an exclusive interview with Starr News after a stakeholders meeting in the power sector on April 6, 2024.

“Whatever it is, those who are enjoying electricity like Cote D’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso must come to terms with what is happening is temporary.

“So all contractual obligations will be met very soon and then we don’t have problems. What I understand is when your house is on fire try and put off the fire before going to help your neighbor. I think there is logic in that,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Volta River Authority (VRA) to curtail the export of electricity to other countries in response to the ongoing intermittent power outages, popularly known as ‘dumsor’ in the country.

Ghana exports power to neigbouring countries such as Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso.

The Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, Samuel Atta Akyea, who disclosed this on Accra-based JoyNews’ PM Express show on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, said the directive exhibits the President’s prioritisation of domestic energy requirements over potential profits from exporting electricity.

According to the statement, Gborbu Wulormor Shitsen was interviewed in the presence of his lawyer and the child’s parents to aid ongoing investigations.

The Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has been in discussions with Nungua’s traditional authorities to ensure full cooperation in protecting the child’s best interests.

The government, in fulfilling its constitutional and statutory obligations to safeguard Ghanaian children, has collaborated with multiple ministries and regional authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“In line with the Constitutional and Statutory duty to protect the Ghanaian child, Government through the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Interior and the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has taken the necessary steps to ascertain the facts of the case for necessary actions to be taken”, the statement said.

Officials from MoGCSP have confirmed her well-being and provided necessary support.

The Ministry reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders in the ongoing investigation of the alleged child marriage.

  • GHC1.2 million worth of of palm oil gallons ravaged by fire at Akyem New Tafo

GHC1.2 million worth of of palm oil gallons ravaged by fire at Akyem New Tafo

A devastating fire has swept through the YWCA-31st December Palm Oil production factory in Akyem New Tafo, Ghana, causing extensive damage and economic turmoil.

The inferno, lasting nearly five hours before being extinguished by Ghana National Fire Service personnel, razed the entire structure to the ground.

The blaze consumed approximately 3000 gallons of palm oil, valued at over 1.2 million cedis, along with vital production machinery and tons of related products.

This catastrophe has disrupted the livelihoods of over 100 artisanal female palm producers and labourers, leaving them in dire straits.

Victims like Mary Mensah and Bashabirafatu, who relied on the factory for their families’ support, shared heartbreaking stories of loss and uncertainty about their future.

“My son is in university, this is what I do to take care of him. I was at the funeral when they called me that fire has burnt everything here. I have everything so government should help us we don’t have farms, this is what we do to survive,” Mary Mensah, a palm oil producer, lamented while weeping.

“This is what I do to take care of my three children in Senior High School. I am a widow so I have told my children they have to stop school because I have lost all my investments. I don’t know where I am going to get money to help them so we are pleading to government to urgently help us”.

Lydia Annor Blay, who was in the midst of supplying international markets, recounted the devastation of losing everything in the fire.

“Since the incident happened I have been sick because I lost everything, all my investments have been lost to the fire. I had made the production of about 50 jerricans of a gallon of palm oil for supply to USA all have been burnt. We have widows, and orphans all working here. We went for loans, all have been lost. We appealed to President Akufo-Addo to help us,” Lydia Annor Blay recounted her losses.

Gloria Obeng Peprah, a pregnant labourer, emphasised the urgent need for government assistance to help those affected survive this crisis.

“I am a pregnant woman but I come here to work, at least I get between GHS50 and sometimes GHS100 a day here. Dozens of labourers come here to work and they all get something to survive on so we are appealing to government to help”.

The destruction of the factory not only impacts immediate economic challenges but also threatens the broader palm oil value chain, affecting families across the region.

Established in the 1990s, the YWCA-31st December Palm Oil Production factory served not only the domestic market but also supplied products to Nigeria, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast and with individual customers in Europe.

Its destruction not only presents immediate economic challenges but also threatens to disrupt the broader palm oil value chain, affecting hundreds of families reliant on this source of income.

In response to the crisis, the Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North, Alhaji Umar Bodinga, who visited the scene with his entourage appealed to the Gratis Foundation and other corporate organizations and agencies to aid in rebuilding the factory to restore livelihoods for the affected individuals.

“Unfortunately the assembly does not have money to rebuild the facility and provide the machinery. We can try and put up the structure but we can’t afford the machinery so we will write the various agencies to help us rebuild the factory urgently else the implications are going to be dire.”
In response, local authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive for Abuakwa North, are appealing to organisations and agencies for support in rebuilding the factory and restoring livelihoods.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has conducted assessments, but substantial relief support remains uncertain, underscoring the critical need for government intervention to aid in reconstruction and help affected families recover.

“You definitely walking dead” – Fella Makafui ‘threatens’ netizen who insulted her

Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui recently engaged in a heated exchange on Twitter with an individual described as an ‘online bully,’ amidst swirling rumors about her marital status.

The incident unfolded when Fella shared a video on her Twitter page, announcing the premiere of her upcoming movie at the Silver Bird Cinema on May 11, 2024.

In her announcement, Fella encouraged the public to buy tickets and attend the event, which seemed to trigger a negative response from an aggressive Twitter user.

This person, for reasons unknown, resorted to hurling insults at Fella, calling her derogatory names like “Kwasia (stupid) girl.”

Fella didn’t take the abuse lying down and swiftly fired back, calling the individual a “Kwasiaa (stupid) boy” and implying they were “walking dead.”

The incident comes amidst speculation about Fella Makafui’s relationship with rapper Medikal.

On March 30, Medikal clarified that Fella is now the mother of his child, indicating they are co-parenting.

This response came after a social media user referred to Fella as Medikal’s wife.

It’s worth noting that Medikal and Fella have unfollowed each other on Instagram, and Fella has edited her Instagram username, removing the “Mrs. Frimpong” title.

These recent developments have sparked discussions and debates on social media, with some fans expressing surprise at the reported separation, while others speculate about the authenticity of the situation.

Funny Face is not a flight risk; why is he still in prison? – Barker-Vormawor asks

Private legal practitioner Oliver Barker-Vormawor has strongly criticized Ghana’s justice system following the remand of comedian Funny Face into prison.

Barker Vormawor expressed bewilderment at the denial of bail to Funny Face, who remains in detention while awaiting trial.

He argued that individuals with recognizable status, like Funny Face, should be granted bail with the condition to report to the police as required.

Barker Vormawor took to Twitter to voice his concerns, labelling Funny Face’s continued imprisonment as unfair and absurd.

“The fact that Funny Face remains in prison highlights the flaws in our criminal justice system. Denying bail should only occur when there are genuine concerns about the individual’s reliability to attend trial. Funny Face, being a public figure, poses no flight risk and should be granted bail without hesitation,” Barker-Vormawor stated.

He further questioned the rationale behind using bail as a form of punishment, particularly when the person is already undergoing trial.

Barker-Vormawor criticised the seeming lack of empathy and respect for constitutional rights within the judicial system.

    Background

Petroleum consumers in the country witnessed another hike in the prices of products on April 4, 2024.

This came after the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) reversed its decision to suspend the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy (PSRL) on the price build-up of petroleum products.

In a letter dated April 3, 2024, and copied to various stakeholders in the oil marketing and distribution industry, the regulator [NPA] directed them to apply 16 pesewas per litre of Petrol, 14 pesewas per litre of Diesel, and 14 pesewas on every Kg per Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

In the wake of this, the state-owned Oil Marketing Company, GOIL, adjusted its prices of petrol and diesel selling at GH¢14.15 per litre and GH¢14.74 per litre respectively.

The price adjustment, according to GOIL took effect on April 4, 2024.
It is expected that other OMCs in the country will also adjust their prices to align with the directive issued by the NPA.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to introduce Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as its vice presidential running mate, marking a significant step in their campaign strategy.

Following this announcement, sources close to her campaign office reveal that she will kick off her national campaign tour in the Central Region, her home region, on Saturday, 20 April 2024.

Beloved figure in the Archdiocese of Zaragoza, Spain, Father Javier Sánchez tragically passed away from severe burns sustained during the Easter Vigil.

Reports from El Heraldo de Aragón reveal that Father Sánchez valiantly attempted to shield nuns from a sudden blaze sparked by a liturgical candle.

The incident occurred within the confines of the Santa Isabel neighbourhood’s convent, where Father Sánchez, aged 60, served as a parish priest at St. Gregory Church.

“The priest tried to protect the nuns of the convent when embers lit up in the basin that was used [for the fire] and that ultimately caused his death. ECG is becoming ungovernable; why the delay in a load-shedding timetable – ACEP Boss

Executive Director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye has expressed concerns about the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its resistance to regulation.

This comes in light of a letter sent by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

According to Boakye, GRIDCo’s letter serves to highlight ECG’s failure to adhere to directives, particularly regarding load-shedding management timetables issued by the National System Control Center (NSCC).

Speaking on 3FM’s mid-day news with Beatrice Adu, Boakye emphasised that this issue is not new among industry stakeholders.

“They want the Minister to take direct responsibility and call all the others to order. That is essentially what they have done.
He added “This gives a feeling that ECG is becoming ungovernable in our space. They are supposed to be regulated by the regulator and also to see GRIDCo indicate, there are L.Is or provisions that actually state that when they inform the ECG to protect the infrastructure they should act accordingly. So why they have refused to actually act to save the grid, it can only be guessed which is not good for the maintenance of the infrastructure that we have spent so much money on,” Ben Boakye stated.

Boakye further pointed out the significance of the Minister taking direct responsibility to ensure compliance within the sector, as outlined in regulations and provisions meant to safeguard infrastructure.

He warned against ECG’s seeming disregard for such protocols, which could jeopardize the maintenance of crucial infrastructure that has already incurred substantial investment.

While acknowledging the need for adjustments, Gyampo questions the significant magnitude of the increase.

The decision to raise fees is part of broader efforts to boost revenue and streamline administrative processes.

However, Gyampo argues that the recent hike, with fees soaring by over 500 percent, could disproportionately affect ordinary citizens, especially those from low-income backgrounds.

Speaking on TV3, Gyampo emphasised the importance of balancing revenue generation with ensuring accessibility to essential documents like passports for all citizens.

He suggested that while some increase is acceptable, a 400 percent hike, as seen in the recent revisions, may be excessive.

“I favor some increment and I believe that the good people of Ghana will appreciate that things have gone up, so we should adjust a little. We were expecting some adjustment, but the 400 percent was too much.”

Effective April 1, 2024, the revised fees include a substantial surge.

For instance, the fee for a standard 32-page passport has risen from GHC100 to GHC500, while expedited services now come with fees of GHC700 and GHC800 for the 32-page and 48-page options, respectively.

The minority faction in Parliament has also voiced discontent, indicating plans to revisit the fee adjustments once the House reconvenes from recess.

  • We’re in trouble if rich folks are classified as needy – Domelevo on scholarship bonanza

We’re in trouble if rich folks are classified as needy – Domelevo on scholarship bonanza

Former Auditor-General, Dominic Yao Domelevo, has raised serious concerns about the mismanagement of scholarships in Ghana.

He criticised the system for labelling financially well-off individuals as needy, thus allowing them to benefit from scholarships intended for economically disadvantaged students.

Domelevo highlighted the troubling trend of people exploiting scholarships meant for gifted but underprivileged students.

He expressed surprise at the Scholarship Secretariat’s inaction despite these abuses being brought to light through audits.

“So I thought maybe they didn’t know, so at least since the audit has revealed some of these things, it was very easy to say look, let’s see what is expected of us, the law says this.”

During an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Domelevo pointed out that even though audits revealed these issues, no corrective measures have been taken.

He emphasised the danger of allowing affluent individuals to classify themselves as needy, undermining the purpose of scholarship funds.

“If we have a society in which the highest-paid class can classify themselves as needy, then we are in trouble.”

One of Domelevo’s examples involved a debate where someone argued that a minister earning a substantial monthly salary should qualify as needy for a scholarship.

“So if you are taking between GH₵25,000 to GH₵30,000 a month and you are needy and so it is you who is supposed to benefit from this fund, then I find it unfortunate,” the former Auditor-General stressed.

Domelevo criticised such notions, highlighting that many teachers and public servants earn significantly less.

His concerns were echoed by the recent publication ‘Scholarship Bonanza,’ which exposed beneficiaries close to government officials, including the children of prominent figures.

The public outcry has urged the Scholarship Secretariat to prioritise transparency, but the Registrar maintains that no wrongdoing has occurred.

  • Ghana could lose power export market if Akufo-Addo’s directive to curtail power continues – Nana Amoasi VII

Ghana could lose power export market if Akufo-Addo’s directive to curtail power continues – Nana Amoasi VII

Executive Director for the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII has warned of potential consequences as Ghana grapples with an energy crisis and President Akufo-Addo’s directive to limit power exports.

President Akufo-Addo recently directed the Volta River Authority (VRA) to prioritise domestic power needs over exports, a move aimed at mitigating the ongoing energy challenges.

Samuel Atta Akyea, Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, revealed this during an interview with JoyNews.

Atta Akyea stated that the President’s decision reflects a focus on national priorities over international profit generation.

However, industry experts doubt the effectiveness of this strategy without addressing underlying capacity deficits.

Nana Amoasi VII emphasised the continued shortfall in generation capacity, indicating that merely halting exports wouldn’t resolve the crisis.

“We were expecting that if we halt the export, it will solve the issue. No, we still have a deficit of 400 megawatts thereabout, so load shedding will continue,” said Nana Amoasi VII.

He cautioned that prolonged measures could jeopardise Ghana’s electricity export market.

“The negative ramification is that if the proposed solution is extended, we may end up losing the export market.”

In response, SONABEL, Burkina Faso’s power distributor, seeks dialogue with Ghanaian officials to tackle mutual power supply concerns.

Ghana faces immediate challenges due to its government’s curtailment decision, impacting both domestic and international stakeholders.

  • GPRTU to discuss transport fare hikes on April 10

GPRTU to discuss transport fare hikes on April 10

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is scheduled to convene on Wednesday, April 10, to deliberate on potential adjustments to transport fares.

This decision comes in the wake of the Western regional branch’s announcement of a 30-percent fare hike, effective Monday, April 8, citing mounting expenses in fuel, spare parts, and DVLA documentation fees that are squeezing their profit margins.

Mr. David Agboado, president of the Concerned Drivers Association, expressed frustration with the escalating costs, particularly due to the reintroduction of the price stabilisation and recovery levy impacting fuel prices.

In an interview with Alfred Ocansey on Ghana Tonight, Mr. Agboado criticised the transport ministry for its perceived inaction, stating, “The ministry is not up and doing.”

Highlighting the pressing need for fare adjustments, Mr. Agboado indicated that the drivers’ association had been urging for fare increases over the past three months.

“Our business is going down…I’m sure after Wednesday’s meeting we will not have a meeting for the passengers, because we have traded for loss for a long time, and this time around we are going to increase our transport fares. We will not even wait to meet the [transport] ministry because the ministry is not up and doing.”

He stressed the urgency of the situation, mentioning that they are considering a fare hike between 20 to 30 percent to offset rising operational expenses.

The impending meeting aims to address these challenges and formulate a strategy to ensure the sustainability of the transport sector amidst economic pressures.

  • Invest in businesses; your relevance has a limit – Beverly Afaglo’s advice to creatives

Actress Beverly Afaglo is encouraging fellow creatives in the industry to diversify their income streams by investing in businesses.

She emphasized that this step is crucial to ensure financial stability during periods of reduced acting opportunities.

Afaglo points out that with an increasing number of individuals entering the Showbiz sector, actors may not receive daily calls for work.

However, by venturing into business endeavors, they can secure an ongoing source of income.

She elaborates, citing examples from Hollywood where celebrities like 50 Cent and Jay Z have become successful business owners alongside their entertainment careers.

“My advice to them is to invest in business because after the fame and everything, people still look up to you for many things and  that’s why you have to tap into this.

“In Hollywood, we have the likes of 50 Cent, Jay Z being owners of companies. 50 Cents has water, Jay Z has different businesses. You need to invest into something and definitely because they love you, they will be able to be part of you and it works like this because at the end of the day, it will get to a point where you won’t be called everyday. Younger ones are coming, there might not be roles for you, how you look, how you act, but when you have invested into something, then it’s definitely going to help,” Beverly Afaglo stated.

Afaglo emphasises the importance of tapping into entrepreneurship, as it not only provides financial security but also maintains one’s relevance beyond the spotlight.

In line with her advice, Beverly Afaglo has recently launched the Traffic Shawarma franchise.

She expressed confidence in her brand, believing that her loyal audience will support her ventures due to their trust in her credibility.

“I believe people trust my brand and anything I put out there till now, people know that whatever I bring into the system is legit and so far they are happy.”

Afaglo’s message underscores the necessity for industry players to look beyond immediate fame and invest in sustainable income-generating activities for long-term financial well-being.

He pointed out that social media has empowered artists to directly connect with their audience, bypassing traditional gatekeepers and creating a more democratic space for artistic expression.

“Social media has completely changed the game for myself and many artists. It has allowed us to reach a global audience without relying solely on mainstream media or record labels. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become essential tools for promoting our music and engaging with fans instantly.

“Now all of a sudden you can just get into the industry by just posting a cover or a song of yourself singing randomly on your bed and next thing is it is getting millions of views and everybody wants to work with you and connect with you,” Joeboy shared.

He also discussed the flip side of social media, highlighting how it can sometimes create a misleading image or “facade” that people might mistake for reality.

“I can take a picture in front of a jet right now, I won’t say a word, and the next thing bloggers will say Joeboy has bought a jet, and people who do not know me privately will believe it, and if do not see anything they will take it as fact.”

In response, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment, citing his research in Estonia on their successful flat rate tax system.

“In trying to find a solution to this, I went to Estonia, one of the most business-friendly countries in the world, to study their tax system and I discovered that the key for them is the flat rate tax system they have, which is clear, transparent and with a very high compliant rate.”

“This is what I want to introduce in Ghana, to make Ghana a business-friendly country and one of the most business-friendly nations in the world.”

He outlined a series of policy proposals aimed at reducing the complexity and cost of doing business in Ghana, including VAT reviews and measures to align port charges and import duties for greater stability.

“My major goal is to make Ghana one of the most business-friendly economies in the world.

“My government will be a business-centered government. I want, thus, to move quite a number of government expenditure to the private sector. When this happens, government’s expenditure will reduce and the private sector will also thrive,” Dr. Bawumia told the GUTA members.

The engagement with GUTA forms part of Dr. Bawumia’s broader initiative to engage stakeholders across sectors, showcasing his vision for a transformed economic landscape and garnering valuable feedback to refine his policies.

He emphasised the crucial need to prioritise the mental well-being of potential officeholders, citing the significant impact their decisions can have on the nation.

In an interview on Asaase Radio, Prof. Agyeman-Duah voiced his reservations regarding the ambitious campaign promises made by candidates vying for higher office ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to a directive dated April 3, 2024, distributed among stakeholders in the oil marketing and distribution sector, the NPA has mandated additional charges: 16 pesewas per litre for Petrol, 14 pesewas per litre for Diesel, and 14 pesewas for every kilogramme of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Consequently, GOIL, a state-owned Oil Marketing Company, has adjusted its prices accordingly, setting petrol and diesel at GH¢14.15 per litre and GH¢14.74 per litre, effective April 4, 2024.

This recent surge in fuel prices marks the most significant increase since February 2023, when a litre of fuel sold for GH¢15.40 and GH¢15.50 for diesel.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, is anticipating a twofold surge in fuel prices during April’s upcoming petroleum pricing window.

During an interview on Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Nana Amoasi VII criticized the suspension, asserting that it was not thoroughly deliberated before being implemented.

He noted that the levy had failed to achieve its intended purpose of stabilizing fuel prices, citing historical instances where prices soared to GH¢18 per litre in 2022.

Nana Amoasi VII warned of an impending fuel price surge, indicating that prices could rise to approximately GH¢14.05 per litre, potentially resulting in a double increase.

“The suspension of the levy was not well-thought through because it was clear in the statement that it was intended to relieve consumers of intending price hikes which are necessitated by happenings on the world market and also our own forex market. Then the OMCs increase fuel prices in response to the domestic foreign market and the international fuel market.

“Unfortunately, a day or two, the NPA comes to say we are reversing the suspension of that levy which is meant to cushion consumers and this time around, the NPA fails to give the reasons for the suspension.

“We have not seen any impact of this levy on fuel prices over the years because it has not been able to stabilise prices and prices shot up as high as GH¢18 per litre somewhere in 2022 and we are seeing the same thing now.”

“What is going to happen is that fuel is going to increase again. Few have done it already and others are yet to do it and prices will roughly rise GH¢14.05 and so fuel prices will soon see a double increase,” Nana Amoasi VII added.

  • Gov’t borrowed GHC19.90 billion through treasury bills in March 2024

The government in March 2024 borrowed GH¢19.90 billion through treasury bills, marking a 17% decrease from February’s borrowing.

A portion of these funds, GH¢14.47 billion, was allocated to refinancing maturing debts.

One notable trend was the continual decline in yields.

The 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day yields closed at 26% (128 basis points lower), 28.5% (-125 basis points), and 29.1% (-120 basis points) respectively, indicating a sustained downward trajectory.

Analysts anticipate a sluggish reduction in yields for April due to slower disinflation and a recent Cash Reserve Ratio increase for banks with loan-deposit ratios below 55%.

Investor demand for T-bills fell below the treasury’s target last week, prompting the government to accept all bids, resulting in a raised amount of GH¢2.35 billion against a GH¢4.16 billion target.

This decision impacted target and maturity coverage ratios, reflecting levels last observed in April 2022.

Despite these shifts, yields continued their descent with a 25 basis points drop across all tenors.

The 91-day and 182-day yields settled at 25.75% and 28.25% respectively, while the 364-day closed at 28.85%.

Looking ahead, the government plans to raise GH¢2.81 billion this week through 91 to 364-day bills to fulfill GH¢2.58 billion in refinancing obligations.
