  • Anti-LGBTQI bill: Put sanctions on MP’s, Speaker of Parliament and leave Ghanaians alone – Kwame Pianim to U.S.

Renowned economist, Mr. Kwame Pianim, has called on the United States and other nations opposed to Ghana’s anti-gay legislation to direct their sanctions specifically towards the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Members of Parliament who supported the bill.

Mr. Pianim emphasized that the bill was not a nationwide referendum and urged against imposing sanctions on the entire country.

Speaking on TV3’s Business Focus with Paa Kwesi Asare, Mr. Pianim suggested, “my appeal to the US  and the other countries who feel very strongly about lgbtq rights as human rights is that they should not use the instrument of sanctioning the whole country, they should put sanctions on the Speaker of Parliament, those who moved the bill and the 275 of the MPs, put sanction on them and leave the Ghana economy alone.

“This is not a referendum that has been passed by the people of Ghana, we are already suffering, so don’t add any sanctions to it, sanction the people who are doing this and if these people make our problems worse, all of us Ghanaians should consider seriously,  this 8th parliament of the fourth republic, the administration none of them should receive their gratia.”

He further warned against detrimental consequences, proposing that if the actions of the lawmakers worsen the country’s problems, none of them should receive their gratia.

“In total, Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing over the next five to six years. For 2024, Ghana will lose US$600 million budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund. This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore up the country’s reserve position,” part of the brief cited by 3news.com reads.

Expressing discontent with the Finance Ministry’s late warning on the bill’s financial implications, Mr. Pianim stated that the caution should have been issued during the bill’s parliamentary discussions.

He criticised the administration’s handling of the situation, stating, “It shows how incompetent our administration is; it is really shambolic.”

The Ministry of Finance had outlined potential financial losses, including a US$3.8 billion reduction in World Bank financing over the next five to six years, following the passing of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Mr. Pianim questioned the ministry’s timing, emphasising the importance of addressing financial implications before the bill’s passage.

Parliament passed the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill on February 28, prompting international concern and the Ministry of Finance’s caution on the potential economic fallout.

  • We’ll not accept attempts to dilute the origins of Tetteh Quarshie – Nii Ayikoi Otoo

We’ll not accept attempts to dilute the origins of Tetteh Quarshie – Nii Ayikoi Otoo

The Ga Dangme Council has rejected attempts to alter the historical origins of Tetteh Quarshie, emphasizing his roots in Osu, Greater Accra Region, not Mampong in the Eastern Region.

During the 67th Independence Day celebration in Koforidua on March 6, President Akufo-Addo credited Tetteh Quarshie as the pioneer behind Ghana’s cocoa introduction, attributing his heritage to Mampong Akuapem.

Disputing this claim, Nii Ayikoi Otoo, the President of the Ga Dangme Council, insists that the President’s account is inaccurate.

Expressing frustration, Nii Ayikoi Otoo stated in an interview with Citi News, “Let us give due where it is appropriate. We have never heard this history before, and we don’t know where they are getting it from. Is it the speech writers? Even if it is the speech writers, then they should check their history and stop what they are doing.”

He further emphasized the importance of accurate historical representation, saying, “If it is deliberate, then they should stop because we have said that even if people don’t want to respect us, cocoa that has become a cash crop for Ghana was brought by a Ga man, and now they are telling us that the man hails from Mampong. We are peeved, and the earlier it is stopped, the better.”

Tetteh Quarshie was an agriculturalist in the British Colony of Gold Coast and the person directly responsible for the introduction of cocoa crops to Gold Coast, which today constitute one of the major export crops of the Ghanaian economy, the country Gold Coast became in 1957.

Quarshie travelled to the island of Fernando Po (now Bioko in Equatorial Guinea) in 1870 and returned in 1876 to Ghana in order to introduce the crop.

He died on Christmas Day 1892.

Ghana needs leaders like Dormaahene not like the others – Rev Obofour

Founder and leader of Anointed Palace Chapel (APC), Reverend Kwaku Agyei Antwi, popularly known as Rev. Obofour, has applauded Dormaa Chief, Nana Agyemang Badu II, for his dedication to maintaining cleanliness in the Dormaa Traditional Area.

Videos showcasing Nana Agyemang Badu II actively leading community clean-up initiatives, including gutter desilting and weed clearance, have garnered widespread praise.

Reverend Obofour joins the chorus of admiration, commending the chief for his hands-on approach to ensuring the cleanliness of the region.

Highlighting the unusual yet commendable commitment of the Dormaahene, Reverend Obofour emphasises the chief’s unique blend of roles as a high court judge and community leader.

“There is a chief in Ghana; he is a judge and is also a chief. Anytime you see him, he is clearing out gutters with his people. A whole high court judge and a whole chief still come down to the level of the people to sweep gutters.

“I am talking about Nana Dormaahene, I’m not afraid of anybody. That man, who is a high court judge, still has time to wear a simple shirt and clean gutters with his people, why not the other leaders we have now?,” Rev. Obofour stated.

He draws attention to Nana Dormaahene’s humility in donning a simple shirt to engage in gutter cleaning alongside his people.

Expressing concern about the prevailing trend of electing leaders who exploit the nation’s resources, Rev. Obofour issues a warning about the potential consequences.

He urged Ghanaians to reconsider their voting choices, advocating for leaders who actively contribute to the betterment of society.

In a touching reflection, Rev. Obofour forewarns that the day may come when the nation yearns for leaders like Dormaahene, only to realise they are no longer present.

“We don’t vote for good people; rather, we vote for people who don’t do anything but sit around and milk the country. A day will come when we will pray for leaders like Dormaahene, but by then, they will all be gone.”

  • Nigerian government forces out world’s largest crypto broker; blames it for depreciation in national currency – Bright Simons

Nigerian government forces out world’s largest crypto broker; blames it for depreciation in national currency – Bright Simons

The Vice President of IMANI in charge of research at the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simons, has disclosed the Nigerian government’s action of forcing out the world’s largest crypto broker, Binance, due to the country’s depreciation of the national currency.

According to the Nigerian government, Binance manipulated foreign exchange rates through currency speculation and rate-fixing, which have seen the naira lose nearly 70% of its value in recent months.

Two Binance executives were arrested in Nigeria earlier in the week.

The Nigerian government says it has demanded almost $10bn (£8bn) in compensation from the cryptocurrency firm, Binance.

Nigeria is Africa’s biggest economy and also one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency markets.

On Tuesday, Nigeria’s central bank governor Olayemi Cardoso said Binance Nigeria had moved $26bn worth of untraceable funds.

Binance is understood to be one of the most popular cryptocurrency platforms in the country.

To the frustration of Nigerian users, Binance and several other cryptocurrency firms have been suspended in the country in recent weeks including Coinbase, Kraken, Forextime, OctaFX, Crypto and FXTM in an attempt to halt the slide of the naira.

As well as the collapse of the naira, the government also says cryptocurrency is used for money-laundering and funding terror.

The “anonymity and privacy inherent in the cryptocurrency system are what draw individuals, particularly those with illicit intentions, towards its use,” said a recent report by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.

Central bank governor Mr Cardoso said on Tuesday that “illicit flows” had been spotted on some cryptocurrency platforms in Nigeria. No specific firms were named as culprits.

In another measure intended to curb foreign-currency trading, Nigeria has closed thousands of bureaux de change.

Nigeria’s central bank has been under pressure to stabilize the national currency, the naira, which currently exchanges at 1,595 naira to US$1, compared to about 460 a year ago.

The collapse of the naira has worsened the cost-of-living crisis. High food and commodity prices – including fuel and transport – have led to protests in recent weeks.

The Banda Constituency MP asserts that despite the bill being passed by parliament, President Akufo-Addo’s reluctance to give it his approval has resulted in a tense political climate, affecting those associated with the legislation.

The withdrawal of Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, a prominent figure within the parliament, adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the anti-LGBTQ+ bill and raises questions about the extent of political maneuvering and influence on such contentious issues within the Ghanaian political landscape.

  • Anti LGBTQ+ bill: Succumbing to external pressure undermines Ghana’s independence – National Chief Imam’s Spokesperson

Anti LGBTQ+ bill: Succumbing to external pressure undermines Ghana’s independence – National Chief Imam’s Spokesperson

The Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, voiced concerns about external influences impacting critical national decisions, particularly in the wake of the recent passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill in Parliament.

Sheikh Shaibu asserted that succumbing to such external pressure would compromise the very essence of Ghana’s independence, coincidentally marking its 67th year on March 6.

Sheikh Shaibu, highlighting the widespread objection to LGBTQ+ activities among Ghanaians, emphasised the collective rejection of these practices as a nation grounded in strength, might, and deep spirituality.

He questioned the authenticity of Ghana’s independence, expressing concern that external forces challenge the nation’s autonomy in decision-making.

“In my view, it makes complete nonsense of our independence. Ghana will be marking its 67th year of independence on the 6th of March as a nation. 67 years!”

The United States’ warning of dire economic implications following the enactment of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill added a layer of complexity to the situation.

Sheikh Shaibu, however, stood firm, underlining the religious foundation of the country as evident in the constitution, national anthem, and pledge—all referencing the Almighty God.

“And majority of the people in our country see these gay and lesbian activities as something opprobrious that we must all reject with all the strength and the might and the spirit as a nation that has a deep sense of God.”

As Ghana grapples with the divisive Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, Sheikh Shaibu urged citizens to reflect on the implications of external pressure on decision-making.

“Now it is not even about our concerns, feelings, and beliefs as citizens of this country, but because of a certain pressure from outside which didn’t begin today is trying to influence us. This shows that as a nation we are not truly independent as we claim and it must be a worry for every citizen in this country.”

He stressed that true independence should empower Ghana to shape its destiny without undue influence from external sources.

The Finance Ministry’s call for the President to engage stakeholders, including faith-based organisations, and its suggestion to involve conservative countries like Arab nations and China, further underscored the geopolitical implications of the bill.

Meanwhile, human rights groups in Ghana have threatened legal action, with two lawsuits already before the Supreme Court, prompting President Akufo-Addo to await the court’s decision before taking action on the bill.

The unfolding events raise critical questions about Ghana’s independence and its ability to navigate internal issues without succumbing to external pressures.

Akufo-Addo approved E-levy amid a lawsuit yet claims he is unable to do same for anti LGBTQ+ bill – Sam George

The controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has become the spotlight of a brewing conflict between its lead sponsor, Sam George, and President Akufo-Addo.

George alleges that the President is using a pending legal challenge as a shield to avoid assenting to the contentious legislation.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on March 5, George pointed to the President’s past actions, highlighting instances such as the Electronic Transaction Levy, where Akufo-Addo proceeded despite legal challenges.

The Prampram lawmaker argued that if the President genuinely supported the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, he would have assented to it, court action notwithstanding.

“The President is being the puppet master here with a few other players here. The President is trying to find an excuse not to sign, but again you want to find out if the President is being principled or not,” George asserted.

Furthermore, George revealed his plan to suggest to co-sponsors to reintroduce the bill to Parliament if President Akufo-Addo declines to sign.

He emphasised the possibility of putting it to a 2/3rd majority vote in such a scenario.

President Akufo-Addo reassured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to upholding human rights, emphasising the ongoing legal challenge as the reason for the delay in action.

He made these remarks during a diplomatic engagement on March 4, addressing concerns surrounding the bill.

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, on March 5, journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky filed a lawsuit against Parliament at the Supreme Court, seeking an order to restrain the President from assenting to the bill.

The lawsuit also aims to prevent the Speaker of Parliament and the Clerk from presenting the bill to the President.

However, legal experts, including Associate Professor Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua from the Ghana Law School, have labelled certain portions of the lawsuit as premature.

Appiagyei-Atua noted that arguing against the bill on the grounds of constitutional violations may weaken the case.
As the legal battle unfolds, the fate of the Human Sexual Rights Bill remains uncertain, with political and legal figures locked in a contentious struggle over its future.

Ghana has no freedom until the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is cancelled- Sister Derby on Independence Day

On Ghana’s Independence Day, singer and activist Sister Deborah, took a bold stance on social media advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ community in the country.

In a passionate post on X, the artist underscored that true freedom for all Ghanaians is unattainable unless the queer community is granted the same liberties.

Sister Deborah’s advocacy extended to challenging the country’s motto of “Freedom and Justice,” urging for the removal of the notion of ‘freedom’ to be all-encompassing.

She emphasised the need for inclusivity and equality for every individual, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Deploying hashtags such as #QueerGhanaianLivesMatter and #KillTheBill, Sister Deborah voiced her strong opposition to the controversial anti-LGBTQ Bill recently passed by Ghana’s Parliament.

The proposed legislation, currently awaiting presidential assent, seeks to criminalize LGBTQ activities and impose sanctions on those involved in promoting, advocating, or funding such activities.

Sister Deborah’s vocal support for the LGBTQ community adds a prominent voice to the ongoing debate surrounding the bill, sparking conversations about the importance of embracing diversity and ensuring equal rights for all citizens in the West African nation.

The Minister designate for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Seyram Alhassan,  on Tuesday got emotional and broke down in tears before the Appointment Committee of Parliament.

This was when she was asked questions about the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary by-election disturbances.

She told the committee that she was no where near the incident and could not be held responsible for the violence at the Bawaleshie polling station.

“I was in pain (apparently referring to the death of her husband which led to the by-election) and couldn’t have been involved in any violence,” she said.

Her answer to the question asked by the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, was truncated briefly as the chairman of the committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, tried to calm her down.

Kenkey and fish, bread and rice make it to the floor of parliament

Member of Parliament for the Kpando constituency, Della Adjoa Sowah, sheds light on the growing economic challenges facing Ghanaians, backed by tangible examples of daily food items.

Drawing a stark comparison between the Mahama and Akufo-Addo administrations, she highlighted the alarming surge in food prices under the current government.

Presenting samples of essential foods such as kenkey, bread, and a 50kg bag of rice, Sowah points out significant disparities in costs during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) era versus the New Patriotic Party (NPP) era.

According to her, the price hike is staggering, with a ball of kenkey skyrocketing from 1 Ghana cedi in the Mahama era to 5 Ghana cedis under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

“A ball of Kenkey in the Mahama era was C1GH compared to Akufo-Addo’s C5GH, a loaf of bread C2GH compared to Akufo-Addo’s C20GH,” stated Della Adjoa Sowah, emphasizing the harsh impact on the daily lives of Ghanaians.

Expressing concern for the future, she asserts that the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government has let down the citizens, predicting further economic decline if the party retains power.

Sowah’s revelations in Parliament spotlight the pressing need for economic reforms to alleviate the burden on Ghanaians and ensure a prosperous future.

George highlights the legal battle Speaker Alban Kinsford Bagbin is facing against Amanda Odoi, who sued him for carrying out his duties.

According to Sam George, Speaker Bagbin is incurring substantial legal costs while defending himself in the ongoing court battle initiated by Amanda Odoi.

“Professor Takyiwaa Manuh was caught on record saying President Akufo-Addo sponsored them to court to challenge the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. President Akufo-Addo told them at Ghana Center for Democratic Development(CDD) , that he is against the bill and advised them and challenged them to go to court,” stated Sam George.

Akufo-Addo wants NPP to lose 2024 elections – Historian explains

A highly regarded historian has come forward with explosive claims that President Akufo-Addo is orchestrating a plot aimed at ensuring the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fails to regain political power in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The historian alleges that the president is intentionally steering the country towards economic decline to pave the way for his grand plot.

The respected historian asserts that President Akufo-Addo is amassing wealth for his family and close associates with a clear agenda, to position them for a triumphant return to power in the 2028 elections.

According to the historian, the president’s ultimate goal is to solidify his family’s dominance in Ghana’s political landscape.

“President Akufo-Addo has intentionally led the country’s economy into a downfall. He is amassing wealth for himself and his family, aiming to attain political power in 2028 with a representative from his own kin. His vision is to ensure his family’s enduring influence in Ghana’s political history,” the historian revealed.

Akufo-Addo wants every Ghanaian to be extremely poor so his family can rule forever – Respected Historian reveals

A highly regarded historian has accused President Akufo-Addo of intentionally steering Ghana’s economy into hardship, asserting that the leader’s actions are driven by a self-serving agenda that prioritizes the prosperity of his family at the expense of ordinary Ghanaians.

The respected historian, who has long been an influential voice in the nation’s socio-political discourse, made the bold claims during a recent public forum.

According to him, President Akufo-Addo lacks compassion for the struggles faced by the everyday Ghanaian, accusing him of deliberately engineering economic challenges for personal gain.

The historian went on to suggest that the president’s motives extend beyond mere economic mismanagement, alleging a calculated plot to ensure perpetual power within his family lineage.

“Akufo-Addo is engaged in a scheme to enrich his family and secure their dominance in the political landscape, even if it means compromising the well-being of ordinary citizens,” the historian asserted.

These accusations come at a time when the nation is grappling with economic challenges, with citizens facing rising inflation, unemployment, and other hardships.

The historian’s words have ignited a heated debate within political circles and among the general public, prompting calls for transparency and accountability from the Akufo-Addo administration.

  • Anti LGBTQ+ bill: Akufo-Addo is being constitutionally reckless; he is taking Ghanaians for granted – Dafeamekpor

Anti LGBTQ+ bill: Akufo-Addo is being constitutionally reckless; he is taking Ghanaians for granted – Dafeamekpor

A brewing constitutional dispute is unfolding as Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, co-sponsor of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, accuses President Akufo-Addo of recklessness in dealing with the legislation’s assent process.

The Member of Parliament from the South Dayi constituency contends that the President is circumventing constitutional obligations, sparking concerns about the rule of law.

“I think the President is being constitutionally reckless in the sense that, there’s a presumption of regularity of the performance of the President until a court pronounces otherwise. That is why even when the president’s election into office is challenged, all the actions that he would undertake are presumed to be regular and constitutional until he’s removed by a court of law, which is the Supreme Court,” Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor stated.

Despite the bill’s parliamentary approval, President Akufo-Addo, in a recent diplomatic engagement, assured the international community of Ghana’s commitment to human rights.

He explained that the bill is facing legal challenges in the Supreme Court, and until a resolution is reached, no government action will be taken.

Dafeamekpor argues that the President is deviating from constitutional norms, insisting that Akufo-Addo should either propose amendments or outright rejection, as allowed by the constitution.

“Where you have a strong disposition to not assenting to a bill, it is not your business under law to keep it. Perhaps, your reservation about the bill is in respect of some provisions or the entire bill; just say so to Parliament.

“Now, if parliament finally remits this bill to the office of the President, he’s going to detain it until maybe two or three years when the Supreme Court makes a determination in the matter. Parliament will not be able to proceed as determined under Article 106 which says where the President remits in terms of the bill back to parliament with explanatory amendments and all that, parliament is mandated to refer that back to a committee to consider, return to the house and then it will be considered and approved by a two-thirds majority, and when that is done, it is remitted to the office of the President for his assent without hesitation.”

He alleges that the President might intentionally delay the bill’s passage using what he deems as flimsy excuses.

In response to these accusations, Dafeamekpor points to previous instances where the President withheld bills beyond the constitutionally mandated 14-day period.

He warns that such delays could impede the legislative process, leaving Parliament unable to proceed without a clear position from the President.

“What are you going to act on? Because there’s no memo from the President saying that I have refused assent or not. So he’s holding everybody to ransom and that’s not the rule of law. And you can’t have an executive President acting this way” he fumed.

The situation has taken a legal turn, with journalist cum lawyer Richard Dela Sky filing a lawsuit against Parliament at the Supreme Court.

The lawsuit seeks to restrain President Akufo-Addo from assenting to the bill and prevent the Speaker of Parliament and the Clerk from presenting the legislation for approval. This adds to an existing lawsuit against the anti-LGBTQ bill, further complicating the legal landscape.

As the constitutional clash intensifies, the country awaits the Supreme Court’s decisions on these legal challenges, leaving the fate of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill hanging in the balance.

The anthem is currently undergoing review by the NDC before its official release.

Akufo-Addo bows to foreign pressure as he refuses to sign Anti-gay bill

President Akufo-Addo has reassured the diplomatic community that the anti-LGBTQI bill, recently passed by Parliament, will not compromise the country’s strong human rights track record.

The President stated that no such regression in human rights will be considered or allowed.

In a message to the diplomatic community on Monday, March 4, President Akufo-Addo clarified that the bill has not yet reached his desk for approval.

He acknowledged concerns raised by the international community and friends of Ghana but emphasized that no backsliding on human rights principles would occur.

President Akufo-Addo urged patience, mentioning that a concerned citizen has challenged the constitutionality of the proposed legislation at the Supreme Court.

He emphasized the importance of awaiting the court’s decision before taking any action.

“I am aware that last week’s bi-partisan passage by Parliament of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on a Private Member’s motion, has raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana that she may be turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, longstanding record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law. I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned.

“I think it will serve little purpose to go, at this stage, into the details of the origin of this proposed law, which is yet to reach my desk. But, suffice it to say, that I have learnt that, today, a challenge has been mounted at the Supreme Court by a concerned citizen to the constitutionality of the proposed legislation.

“In the circumstances, it would be, as well, for all of us to hold our hands, and await the decision of the Court before any action is taken. The operation of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in our country,” President Akufo-Addo said.

Parliament passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill on February 28, commonly known as the anti-gay Bill, sparking various reactions, including concerns from the diplomatic community.

The Ministry of Finance, in a brief on March 4, highlighted dire implications of assenting to the bill.

Addressing his colleagues in parliament, Sam George emphatically asserted, “My friends will not blackmail me with money, so if we are being told today in the president’s statement that he is giving the friends of Ghana assurance that he is not going to hasten to the ill that this sovereign government has passed, preventing the will of the Ghanaian people.”

President Akufo-Addo responded to concerns raised by international allies regarding the passage of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Speaking at a diplomatic event, he reassured these countries that Ghana remains dedicated to upholding human rights, despite the recent legislative development.

The President acknowledged the anxieties within the diplomatic community and among friends of Ghana but affirmed that the country’s reputation for respecting human rights and adhering to the rule of law will not be compromised.

He clarified that the Bill is currently under scrutiny in the Supreme Court, and until a verdict is reached, his government will not enforce any provisions of the private Member’s bill.

In a circular shared by the Director of Communications at the office of the President, Eugene Arhin, President Akufo-Addo asserted, “l am aware that last week’s bi-partisan passage by Parliament of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on a Private Member’s motion, has raised considerable anxieties in certain quarters of the diplomatic community and amongst some friends of Ghana that she may be turning her back on her, hitherto, enviable, long standing record on human rights observance and attachment to the rule of law. I want to assure you that no such back-sliding will be contemplated or occasioned.”

The President’s commitment to maintaining Ghana’s reputation for human rights observance and adherence to the rule of law, coupled with the ongoing legal scrutiny of the bill, sets the stage for a potentially contentious debate on the intersection of national values and international expectations.
