I look forward to African actors earning royalties for their work – Rita Dominic

Renowned Nigerian actress, Rita Dominic, emphasized the importance of royalties for African actors in a recent interview with Joy FM’s Lexis Bill.

Speaking on the Personality Profile show at the Accra-based radio station, Rita highlighted the need for actors to receive residuals, commonly known as royalties, to secure their financial well-being, especially in their later years.

In the interview, Rita acknowledged the hard work of filmmakers in various fields but stressed that residuals are crucial for improving the lives of actors.

“It will be nice for actors in Africa to have their royalties so that way people are not struggling when they get older, which has been the challenge in the industry for some old actors. They have been struggling financially and that shouldn’t be so. These are people who have done major films, been involved in major films and all that and then all of a sudden when they are old, they are struggling financially. Meanwhile, their films are still being played on YouTube, on all these platforms and they are even getting royalties or getting monies from them,” Rita Dominic stated.

She expressed concern over the financial struggles faced by some veteran actors in their old age, despite their significant contributions to major films that continue to generate revenue on platforms like YouTube.

The absence of proper systems for obtaining residuals from audiovisual content in most African film industries is a recurring issue.

Rita draws attention to the challenges faced by actors in Nigeria and Ghana, where the actors’ guilds advocate for additional wages from every form of licensing, including television airings and streaming.

During the conversation with Lexis Bill, Rita also emphasised the importance of financial planning and investment for actors.

“Maybe some of us need to invest more, do more financial planning, and understand that the work will not always keep coming,” she further noted.

She encouraged her colleagues to manage their finances wisely, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry.

“It is expensive as well, having to support the brand or the celebrity status which is why you have to know how to spend our money.

I do not [feel pressured]. I am not one of those. I definitely don’t feel pressured. Some do, which is why they feel the need to do other things to keep up their appearance.”

Addressing the pressure some actors feel to maintain a lavish lifestyle, Rita asserts her commitment to living within her means.

While recognizing the expenses associated with celebrity status, she suggested that actors should be prudent in their spending.

Rita Dominic, a prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry, shared her insights at the Women of Valour Summit in Ghana, organised by media personality Nana Aba Anamoah.

The summit featured other influential women, including Ghanaian film producer Shirley Frimpong-Manso and South African broadcaster and actress Bonang Matheba.

  • If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

If the driver has no experience; what difference will the driver’s mate make – Mahama to Bawumia

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, passionately emphasized the crucial importance of experience over inexperience in the upcoming presidential election.

Drawing a vivid metaphor, Mahama responded to the recent remarks made by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, comparing his role to that of a driver and a driver’s mate.

While delivering a speech on February 7, Dr. Bawumia positioned himself as a driver’s mate seeking promotion to the driver’s seat, urging Ghanaians to vote for him in the upcoming election.

However, Mahama was quick to question this proposition, asserting that if the current driver has failed to navigate the road properly and adhere to traffic regulations, promoting the mate might not yield better results.

Mahama, a former president, urged the public to consider his experience as a former driver, emphasising that the nation cannot afford to hand over the metaphorical “vehicle” to an inadequately trained driver’s mate. He stated, “If the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?”

“And so on 7th December, the driver is going and if the driver hasn’t driven properly these seven years. We are not going to hand over the car to the driver’s mate. If even the driver couldn’t drive well, how much less the driver’s mate?

“We all know what we’ve gone through these past seven and half years. The opportunity has come for us to rescue our nation from the incompetence and inept clueless administration of Nana Akufo-Addo and his driver’s mate”.

John Mahama advised that his experience as a former driver should be preferred over that of a poorly-trained driver’s mate.

“So I leave you with one final question. If you have a car and the driver didn’t drive well and you are taking your car, will you give it to your former experienced driver or the careless driver’s mate? I will give it to the former experienced driver”, John Mahama stated.

During the two-day tour of the Upper West Region, Mahama engaged with the public, allowing them to voice their concerns and opinions.

He reiterated his commitment to measured promises, particularly regarding the calls for enhanced remuneration by public sector workers.

As the election date approaches, the debate between experience and change continues, with Mahama positioning himself as the experienced hand that Ghana needs to navigate the challenges ahead.

The electorate eagerly awaits the unfolding political developments in the lead-up to the crucial decision on December 7th.

This revelation comes just two years after her former best friend forever (BFF), Nana Tornado, accused Afia’s twin son, James Heerdegen, of being gay.

Nana Tornado, not holding back, labelled Afia Schwarzenegger an irresponsible mother, blaming her for what he perceived as the destruction of her children, particularly pointing fingers at James’ alleged homosexuality.

In a stark warning, Nana Tornado threatened to expose all of Afia’s secrets if she did not halt her campaign against him.

Amidst the escalating controversy, James’ alleged gay partner stepped forward to deny the rumors circulating about their relationship.

However, the plot thickened when Afia Schwarzenegger, in her latest video, subtly admitted that one of her sons was indeed gay, adding fuel to the already blazing fire.

Dapaah’s stolen money: Patience Botwe, 5 others to remain in prison custody until March 15

An 18-year-old hairdresser, and seven others, including Sarah Agyei, have been remanded into prison custody by the High Court in Accra.

The charges stem from their alleged involvement in stealing substantial sums of money, including 300,000 euros, and other valuable properties, from the residence of former sanitation minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

Despite being granted bail with stringent conditions, the accused persons failed to meet the requirements, leading to their transfer from police custody to prison custody.

The decision was made by the Court after State Prosecutors, led by Senior State Attorney Akosua Agyepomaa Agyemang, sought the change in custody.

While defence lawyers, headed by Nana Addo Asirifi, opposed the move to allow the accused to fulfil their bail conditions, the Court maintained that once their bail bonds are certified, they can be released.

Notably, the Court made an exception for Sarah Agyei, who is reportedly breastfeeding a nine-month-old baby, allowing her to remain in police cells.

The court proceedings, which were expected to include a Case Management Conference on March 8, faced a setback as some defence lawyers claimed they had not been served with the latest processes filed by the Prosecution on February 2.

The accused, including Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, aged 18 and 30 respectively, along with Benjamin Sowah, Malik Dauda, Christiana Achab, Job Pomary, and Yahaya Sumaila, have pleaded not guilty to 31 counts, ranging from conspiracy to steal, stealing, dishonestly receiving, and money laundering.
The case took a turn on November 8 when a new charge sheet was filed at the High Court, increasing the counts to 31, including charges of conspiracy, stealing, dishonestly receiving, and money laundering.

The accused persons have been facing legal proceedings since July 6, 2023, and the court has set the next hearing for March 15.

State Prosecutors have also filed an application to restrict the accused from disposing of properties in their custody.

  • Public Officers will swear to a water deity to prove allegiance to the nation – CPP flagbearer hopeful

Public Officers will swear to a water deity to prove allegiance to the nation – CPP flagbearer hopeful

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) flagbearer hopeful, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma, has unveiled a bold initiative to combat corruption by reintroducing a traditional water oath for all public officers.

Advocating for a departure from the current practice of swearing on religious texts, Kumankuma aims to institute a sacred and binding pledge that will hold officials accountable for their service to the nation.

Explaining her vision, Kumankuma emphasizes that the existing system, relying on oaths taken on the Bible and the Quran, lacks the deterrent effect needed to curb corruption and ensure transparency in public offices.

The proposed water oath of allegiance, deeply rooted in Ghana’s ancestral traditions, is intended to instill values of honesty, integrity, and accountability among public servants.

“If elected as Ghana’s president, I will extend this oath to every public officer, from customs officers and teachers to doctors and professionals. It is a commitment to serve our nation selflessly and prevent the rampant corruption that plagues our society today,” stated Kumankuma.

Highlighting the historical effectiveness of the water oath, Kumankuma reminisced about a time when Ghanaian communities thrived on trust, honesty, and a genuine commitment to communal well-being. She believes that reconnecting with these traditional values can pave the way for a more accountable and responsible governance.

“Our ancestors were not evil people; they lived by these values, and it worked. Today, we see a disconnect between our words and actions. Corruption has seeped into our governance, hindering our country’s progress,” she added.

Kumankuma’s proposal has ignited a debate on the role of tradition in modern governance, with supporters praising the initiative as a unique approach to tackle deep-rooted issues of corruption and misconduct in public service.

As the CPP flagbearer, she aims to restore a sense of integrity and responsibility, echoing the values that, according to her, once defined the nation.

We need about US$250m more to complete the National Cathedral – Rev. Kusi Boateng

The Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project, disclosed the anticipated funding requirement for the completion of the facility, which has encountered obstacles due to financial challenges, as reported by the project secretariat.

During an interview on Onua FM on March 7, 2024, Kusi Boateng emphasized the importance of recognizing the national benefits upon completion, urging the faithful to contribute towards the estimated amount of US$200 million to US$250 million needed to finish the National Cathedral.

“If we could raise an amount of US$200 million to US$250 million, the National Cathedral will be completed. Let’s look at the advantages the Cathedral will bring to Ghana and its financial benefits. As a nation, God has blessed us, we need to come together and thank Him,” Rev. Kusi Boateng stated.

He highlighted the project’s comparative cost effectiveness and superior facilities compared to a similar endeavour in the United States.

“Washington Museum in construction cost US$600 million but after the completion of the Cathedral, Ghana shall have a Bible museum of Africa that will in terms of space, content and technology be higher than the American Museum that cost them US$600 million.

“If you look in-depth into the data, you realise that although US$300 million is money but compared to the US$600 million, we’ve done well,” he stressed.

Kusi Boateng addressed concerns raised by MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, dismissing allegations of illegalities and corruption associated with the project.

Ablakwa has been an outspoken advocate for accountability in the use of public resources for the cathedral, citing issues of corporate governance breaches, financial impropriety, and identity fraud within the Board of Trustees.

“I was getting divorced”; not sponsorship – Mimi on Golden Movie Awards absence

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Golden Movie Awards, Mimi Andani has come clean about fabricating the initial reason for the awards scheme’s hiatus, revealing a startling truth in a recent interview.

Initially, in April 2023, Andani had cited a lack of support from corporate Ghana as the primary cause for putting the awards on hold.

However, in an upcoming interview with Joy Prime’s Celeb Biz, she disclosed that she deliberately misled the public due to personal reasons.

Contrary to her earlier statement about struggling to secure sponsorships, Andani now admits, “For the sponsorship reason I gave first, the truth is, it wasn’t the sponsorship. It was that I was getting divorced, and so I have to give a nice reason once I go through my divorce.”

In this unexpected turn of events, she explained that a disagreement between founders, especially given the complications of partnering with a spouse, was the actual catalyst for halting the prestigious awards ceremony.

Despite the candid revelation, Andani remains optimistic about the future of the Golden Movie Awards, emphasising that sponsorship was not going to be a challenge, given the brand’s established reputation.

She expressed hope that the awards will soon make a comeback after this unexpected hiatus.

  • Mahama is a candidate for treason; Akufo-Addo has given him a presidential pardon – Chairman Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama would currently be behind bars if it weren’t for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s commitment to maintaining peace.

In an interview on Wontumi FM, Chairman Wontumi alleged that Mahama is accountable for various acts of corruption during his tenure, including the AirBus scandal.

He emphasised that President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to prosecute Mahama is driven by a desire for national harmony.

“… John Mahama, if not for the fact that Akufo-Addo has ruled Ghana for there to be peace, you should be in jail by now. If not for the fact that Akufo-Addo wants peace to prevail, just as we see former presidents being locked up in countries like Pakistan, the same thing should have happened here,” Chairman Wontumi stated in Twi.

He further added, “If you look at the Air Bus scandal, the Ameri deal, and the other corruption scandals, John Mahama should have been jailed. You (Mahama) are a candidate for treason. It is Akufo-Addo who has given him a presidential pardon, that is why he is walking around freely.”

It is noteworthy that former President John Dramani Mahama has not been implicated in any investigations related to the Air Bus scandal, both domestically and internationally, during the eight years of the Akufo-Addo government.

    About the Airbus scandal:

The Airbus scandal involved allegations that the European aircraft manufacturer paid bribes in Ghana during the sale of three military aircraft.

Former President John Dramani Mahama was implicated, with the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, alleging that he was the “Government Official One” mentioned in the scandal. Mahama denied the allegations and challenged Amidu to prosecute him if he could provide evidence.

I have been struggling to find the appropriate words to describe how I feel right now, because I know how you would have reacted if I were in your position. It is a mixed feeling of disbelief and shock. And this unfortunate news takes me back to some few months ago.

I remember how you stood by my side and ensured that I survived at the time that I was helplessly dying. Little did I know that I was going to survive only for me to be confronted with this devastating news of your passing months later.

I have lost a loyal friend and faithful brother whose loss is simply irreplaceable, not only to me, but to the region as well.

Rest well, my brother. We will surely meet in heaven one day.

“Beware of besties” – Lady shares betrayal story of best friend who planned her burial, steals boyfriend

A video making the rounds identifies a young woman who shared her harrowing story of betrayal and deceit after a traumatic accident left her bedridden.

Shockingly, she revealed that her supposed best friend, whom she believed had her best interests at heart, was secretly plotting her demise.

The victim exposed the unsettling revelation that her best friend had already arranged a wake keeping in her name while she was still in the process of recovering from the accident-induced coma.

The woman alleges that the friend she trusted was, in reality, scheming to prepare for her funeral rather than supporting her recovery.

Expressing her dismay, the victim disclosed, “My best friend already prepared a wake keeping for me. I thought she wished me well, but she was actually preparing for my burial after my accident. She married my husband and took away everything from me. Beware of best friends,” she advised, issuing a cautionary message to others.

While withholding her best friend’s identity, the victim further asserts that this individual not only orchestrated the wake keeping but also went on to marry her husband, leaving her with almost nothing.

The shocking tale serves as a stark reminder of the potential betrayal that can lurk behind seemingly genuine friendships.
