VIDEO: John Cena appears nude on stage to present Oscar award

Actor and professional wrestler John Cena added a touch of humor to the prestigious Oscar event by humorously pretending to bare it all while presenting the award for best costume design.

The WWE wrestler-turned-actor embraced the playful stunt, carrying an oversized winner’s envelope strategically covering his private parts.

The comedic bit was set up by host Jimmy Kimmel, who referenced a streaker at the 1974 Academy Awards.

Cena, however, expressed reservations about the “streaker bit,” emphasising the event’s elegance.

Despite the audience reaction, Cena highlighted the importance of costumes before announcing Holly Waddington as the best costume design winner for “Poor Things.”

To ensure there were no FCC violations, a source revealed that Cena was covered in the groin and butt crack areas, with the envelope securely attached to him.

Kimmel, playing along, later wrapped Cena in a curtain to provide a bit more modesty.

While the cheeky act delighted the audience, it was all in good fun, adding a memorable and unexpected twist to the Oscars telecast.

From the corner of the stage, Cena peeked his head out and told Kimmel he didn’t want to “do the streaker bit anymore.”

“It’s an elegant event. Honestly, you should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea,” Cena complained. “The male body is not a joke!”

Kimmel argued that Cena, who is also a famed WWE wrestler, wrestles in the nude. “Dude, I don’t wrestle naked,” Cena said. “I wrestle in jorts!”

“Jorts are worse than naked!” Kimmel said as the audience laughed.

At this point, Cena – carrying an oversized winner’s envelope over his private parts – walked to the center of the stage as the audience’s jaws dropped to the floor.

“Costumes, they are so important. Maybe the most important thing there is,” he said while presenting the award.

The Academy Awards, commonly and now officially known as the Oscars are awards for artistic and technical merit for the film industry.

They are presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in the United States, in recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

My parents divorced after I made money – ‘Snapchat Queen’ Dulcie Boateng

Popular ‘Queen of Snapchat,’ Dulcie Boateng, recently shared insights into the challenges that contributed to her parents’ divorce, shedding light on her journey from adversity to financial independence.

In an exclusive interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso on The Delay Show aired on March 9, 2024, Dulcie unveiled that her mother’s origin in Aburi and her father’s from Brong Ahafo caused complications in their relationship, ultimately leading to their separation.

While she didn’t delve into specific details, Dulcie attributed her parents’ divorce to the strain caused by this cultural difference.

The pivotal moment came when Dulcie, achieving financial stability in 2017, decided to move her mother out of their Asylum Down residence to Agbogba, both suburbs of Accra.

Subsequently, her mother chose not to return to her husband.

Dulcie shared, “They divorced when I made money because I moved my mother out of the house.”

She explained that her mother regularly checked on her and her younger brother in Agbogba, establishing a new chapter in their lives away from the previous family home.

The influencer recounted the challenging period that triggered her entrepreneurial journey, revealing that it began as a coping mechanism following the death of her sister. “I wanted to do something so that I wouldn’t be bored; just to take my mind off a bit,” she expressed.

Dulcie started selling various items, finding success on Snapchat, particularly with sunglasses, bags, shoes, and tops.

“Poor is being unable to afford basic things that you desire. Riches are happiness in wealth,” Dulcie stated.

“After everything I’ve experienced, the kind of things I like cost money, so, I don’t know if that [happiness without money] is possible right now. [Without money] I don’t think I’ll be as happy as I am now. But I know how to be content…”

How I make my money is none of your business- Dulcie fires back at Delay

The spotlight turned on social media sensation Dulcie Boateng, widely known as the “Snapchat Queen,” as she engaged in a heated exchange with host Deloris Frimpong Manso, popularly known as Delay.

The focal point of the clash was the source of Dulcie’s wealth and the broader implications of probing individuals, especially women, about their financial success.

Delay, known for her candid interviews, raised questions about the authenticity of Dulcie’s wealth, drawing attention to the recent trend of individuals claiming businesses that later face legal issues such as romance scams.

The host expressed concerns that Dulcie might be involved in similar activities and using Snapchat to project a misleading image.

Swiftly responding to the probing questions, Dulcie fired back, challenging Delay on whether she would pose the same inquiries to a man.

“Will you ask a man the same question if he was sitting in front of you?”

Defending her position, Dulcie emphasised that gender should not be a determining factor in such financial inquiries.

Delay countered, citing previous instances where she had questioned men, including Medikal, and urged Dulcie not to play the gender card.

The interview took a turn as Delay highlighted instances in Ghana where individuals falsely claimed ownership of assets for attention, referencing Akuapem Poloo’s admission of fabricating car ownership for social media views.

“This is what is happening in Ghana,” Delay stated. “Akuapem Poloo came here and said she had bought the car, but she later admitted it was for views. I am not bullying you,” she added.

Despite the escalating tension, Dulcie stood her ground, expressing scepticism about the motives behind questioning women about their sources of income.

“I don’t think you are [bullying], to know where women get their money from.”

The conversation also touched on Dulcie’s past experiences, notably her time at Achimota school, where she faced pressure.

Delay suggested that Dulcie might be subjecting other girls to similar pressures, to which Dulcie responded by affirming her ability to turn pressure into positive outcomes.

In a surprising revelation, the Snapchat Queen disclosed that she had financed the construction of her four-bedroom house solely through earnings amassed from her activities on Snapchat, vehemently asserting the legitimacy of her wealth.
The intense exchange on The Delay Show has since sparked widespread discussions on social media, with opinions divided on the appropriateness of probing individuals, especially women, about the sources of their wealth.

The clash between Delay and the Snapchat Queen has become a focal point for a broader conversation about societal expectations and financial scrutiny.

AntiLGBTQ+ bill: We are focusing on trivial issues; corruption is more concerning – Okyeame Kwame

Renowned rapper Kwame Nsiah-Apau known popularly as Okyeame Kwame has voiced his concerns about the misplaced priorities of Ghanaian and African politicians, emphasizing the need to redirect their focus from LGBTQ issues to combating corruption.

According to the ‘Ye Ko’ hitmaker, corruption has entrenched itself as an unofficial citizen in every African country and addressing this pervasive problem should take precedence for the continent’s development.

In his statement, Okyeame Kwame stressed that Ghana could achieve essential progress and self-sufficiency if all efforts were consolidated in the fight against corruption.

Professor Gadzekpo in trouble with Nzemas: giving 7-day ultimatum to appear before leaders over gay comments

Professor Gadzekpo in trouble with Nzema’s ; giving 7-day ultimatum to appear before leaders over gay comments

The Board Chair of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Audrey Gadzekpo has been summoned by six paramountcy’s of Nzema-Land.

This is in regard to claims she made asserting that  alleged homosexual practices are common in Ga and Nzema cultures.

Six paramountcy’s of Nzema-Land have called for her to address the matter directly on their territory.

According to a report by 3news.com, the chiefs organised a joint press conference expressing their displeasure with the professor’s comments.

During an appearance on Joy Newsfile on March 2, 2024, Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo suggested that some Ghanaian cultures, including Ga and Nzema, have historical ties to homosexual practices.

“The whole argument Mr Sam George advances, and it seems very logical that if you go into our history, because Kojo Besia is a coinage, it doesn’t mean that we practise it. Look, I have heard people who were against the bill but have admitted that when you look into some of our cultural practices, there are homosexual practices. It didn’t come from the West.

“Which one? Well, I was in training, and somebody told us that when you look in… there are practices in Ga culture, there are practices in Nzema culture, for example, that sociologists have documented,” Professor Audrey Gadzekpo stated.

In response, Chief of Lower Axim Area, Awulae Ati Brukusu III, representing the outraged paramount chiefs, condemned the comments as misleading and causing chaos in Nzema-Land.

Chief Awulae Ati Brukusu III asserted,“In fact, she just made a misleading statement that has created a lot of chaos and panic in the Nzema land. And people have been calling and asking… a whole paramount chief; what is all this embarrassment? As if she was joking but she was actually saying something to me. Some of the youth can easily say to us that if it’s a culture within our system then if you practice, it is not any sin that is against the traditional norms of the Nzema area.

“… Of course, it is totally no and it is not correct and it has never happened and it’ll not happen. Even the generation coming, it’ll not happen. Our ancestors never did that. I have been on my stool for the past 36 years and I have never even heard of such an issue,” he said.

He emphasised that the professor’s remarks were not only false but also disrespectful to the traditions and values of the Nzema people.

The chiefs have given Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo a seven-day ultimatum to meet with them in the Western Region and apologise for her statements.

Chief Awulae Ati Brukusu III asserted that her apology should extend to all stool holders in the region, considering the gravity of the insult perceived by the Nzema community.

“Come and meet us in the Western Region… As a matter of fact, if we have to go into the olden days, then she has to pacify each stool holder because it’s a big insult. She doesn’t respect us; she doesn’t care about us. At least, she should know who we are, what we are and how we are and not just be on TV publicly just because you are doing it for your own sake.”

  • Tema Port: 18 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2023 – Director General GPHA

Tema Port: 18 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2023 – Director General GPHA

The Tema Port successfully managed 18 million tonnes of cargo, while the Takoradi Port handled eight million tonnes in 2023.

This remarkable performance came as a boost in the latter half of the year after a slow start.

Mr. Michael Achagwe Luguje, the Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority (GPHA), disclosed during a media forum that the total cargo traffic through Ghana’s ports in 2023 was merely one million tonnes shy of the 2022 figures.

Notably, the Takoradi Port outperformed its previous year’s performance.

Attributing the improved second-half performance to collaborative initiatives with external stakeholders and broader economic factors, Mr. Luguje highlighted the GPHA’s efforts.

These initiatives included introducing a scheme to stabilise exchange rates on transit goods at three-month intervals, mitigating increased costs due to fluctuating rates.

In early 2023, the GPHA engaged stakeholders in Ghana and shipping lines to identify factors contributing to the decline in import figures.

The findings were presented to Ghana’s economic management team, and Mr. Luguje expressed confidence in the implementation of measures to reduce the rising cost of doing business in the country’s seaports.

Addressing misconceptions about port charges, Mr. Luguje clarified that GPHA’s charges constituted only 10 percent of the total clearance cost.

“A good chunk of it comes from duties and statutory taxes; the government’s attention has been drawn to it, and they are looking at it to see what can be done to reduce it,” Mr. Luguje stated.

He emphasized that duties, statutory taxes, shipping lines, and freight forwarders also played significant roles in determining costs. The government, he assured, was actively examining ways to alleviate this burden.

“Apart from that, other operators like shipping lines and freight forwarders also contribute to it.”

Mr. Luguje reminded the business community that the efficiency of port systems and infrastructure directly influenced the cost of doing business in the logistics sector.

As a result, the GPHA is dedicated to enhancing port efficiency, aspiring to establish Ghana as the preferred hub in the sub-region.

Emphasising that the future of global mining lies in Africa, he reaffirmed the continent’s commitment to the Africa Mining Vision, aiming for optimal and sustainable mineral resource exploitation for the benefit of its people.

Expressing concern over Africa’s underdevelopment despite its rich resources, Minister Jinapor cited the 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index report, revealing that nearly half of the world’s 1.1 billion poor people reside in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Regrettably, over the years, the exploitation of these resources has not optimally benefited the African peoples. According to the 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index report, nearly half of the world’s 1.1 billion poor people live in sub saharan Africa and using the international monetary funds GDP per capita income 25 out of the 30 poorest countries in the world are in Africa, including countries with large reserves of natural resources,” Samuel Abu Jinapor stated.

He made this statement during Toronto’s Canada-Africa Chamber of Business-hosted 25th annual Africa Mining Breakfast and 22nd annual Investing in Africa Mining Seminar on March 5, 2024.

He urged a more equitable distribution of mining benefits, emphasising the need for Africa to break free from poverty.

Highlighting the potential of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) headquartered in Accra, Ghana, Minister Jinapor outlined a massive market of over 1.2 billion people for trade and investment.

Additionally, he underscored Africa’s crucial role in the global transition to green energy, leveraging its abundant mineral resources.

Expressing optimism, Minister Jinapor hoped that the seminar would foster stronger ties between Africa and Canada, encouraging increased collaboration with Ghana and other African nations in the flourishing mining sector.

The world will come to an end due to LGBTQ+ activities – Ola Michael

Renowned entertainment pundit, Ola Michael, has voiced concerns over potential repercussions should the anti-LGBTQ+ bill be passed, emphasizing the importance of Ghana safeguarding its human rights.

In a recent discussion addressing the parliamentary approval of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, Ola Michael underscored the need for Ghana to remain steadfast in protecting fundamental human rights.

Drawing on biblical references, he argued that same-sex relationships are biblically unacceptable, pointing to instances in the Bible, such as Sodom and Gomorrah, to reinforce his stance.

Expressing a dire prediction, Ola Michael asserted, “The world will come to an end if the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is passed. President Akufo-Addo must prioritize passing the bill to prevent a recurrence of what transpired in the Bible, particularly in Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Akufo-Addo cannot assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill – Kwame A-plus

Renowned musician Mr. Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-plus, has voiced skepticism over Ghana‘s ability to pass the anti-LGBTQ+ bill recently approved by parliament.

A-plus contends that President Akufo-Addo is unlikely to assent to the bill, citing Ghana’s reliance on foreign aid as a significant impediment to true independence.

During a recent interview, A-plus emphasised that Ghana’s dependence on financial assistance from first-world countries compromises its autonomy.

He argued that until Ghana develops robust domestic policies, the West will continue to exert influence and dominance over the nation.

“Akufo-Addo cannot assent to the bill due to Ghana’s dependence on foreign aid. Without financial support from the international community, Ghana struggles to achieve true independence,” asserted A-plus.

The musician’s remarks underscore a broader concern about the impact of external influences on Ghana’s legislative decisions.

A-plus maintained that the Western culture would persist in shaping Ghana’s policies unless the country takes decisive steps towards self-sufficiency.

In conclusion, A-plus delivered a stark prediction, asserting, “Whether Ghana likes it or not, the anti-LGBTQ+ bill would not be passed. We are bound to accept Western culture as long as we remain dependent on foreign aid.”

As discussions surrounding the bill intensify, A-plus’s perspective adds a unique dimension to the discourse, highlighting the complex interplay between national autonomy and international support.

If you’re fortunate enough to leave Ghana; don’t return – Captain Planet advises Ghanaians

Formerly of the renowned 4×4 musical group, Sylvanus Dodji Jeoffrey known popularly as Captain Planet has delivered a stark warning to Ghanaians fortunate enough to have relocated abroad, urging them not to consider returning amidst the current state of affairs in the country.

Emphasizing the perceived self-serving priorities of Ghana’s leaders, Captain Planet asserts that the relentless pursuit of personal wealth by those in power does not bode well for the well-being of the citizens.

Captain Planet voiced his concerns, asserting that individuals who invest their time and resources in the hope of a prosperous future for the nation may find their efforts futile due to the selfish nature of the country’s leaders.

He goes on to advise against blind patriotism, asserting that the leaders are primarily focused on acquiring properties for their families, neglecting the welfare of the populace.

“If you’re fortunate enough to leave this country, please don’t come back. These leaders are only acquiring properties for their families and they don’t give a sh*t about you. Don’t die for this country in the name of being patriotic. Your future is not secured here. BE WISE,”

Captain Planet expressed this in a message shared on X and sighted by GhanaWeb.

As economic challenges continue to afflict Ghana, some aggrieved citizens express frustration, attributing the hardships to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta. Captain Planet’s candid warning adds to the growing discourse on the nation’s economic struggles and the concerns of its diaspora.

Acknowledge the existence of ‘dumsor’; release a well-defined load-shedding timetable -Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, John Mahama, is urging the government to confront the escalating power outages, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor,’ by unveiling a transparent and well-defined load-shedding timetable.

Recent electrical disruptions across the country have prompted Mahama’s call for openness and accountability.

Addressing the issue during his “Building the Ghana We Want” Tour in the Upper West region, Mahama emphasised that Ghanaians are well aware of the ongoing load shedding but lack a clear schedule.

Drawing upon his experience as a former president, Mahama noted that he kept the public informed during his tenure about challenges and the corresponding measures taken to address them.

Expressing concern, Mahama stated, “When I was president, if things were not going well, I told the people of Ghana that things are not going well and this is what we are trying to do about it. I think my honesty was one of my major problems because I didn’t think I should fool my people.”

He highlighted the current administration’s lack of transparency in addressing the power issues, asserting that a failure to provide a detailed timetable for load shedding leaves the public in the dark about when to expect outages.

The seasoned politician explained, “Today, every day you sleep and the lights go off, and we know that they are shedding load. They have a problem with generation. Some generation assets are down. They have a problem with paying for gas. They have a problem with paying for fuel, so every day they are shedding between 280 and 480 megawatts of power, but they will not give us a timetable and say you will be off today, this one will be off tomorrow because that is what Ghanaians know as dumsor.”

Mahama’s plea underscores the need for a clear strategy to manage the ongoing power challenges and provide citizens with essential information about the timing and duration of outages, effectively addressing the nation’s concerns surrounding ‘dumsor.’

KATH introduces ‘revolutionary’ stroke treatment ; indicates treatment cost of GH₵15,000

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has witnessed a staggering increase in stroke cases, with admissions surging from 200 to over a thousand annually over the past four decades.

The prevalent cardiovascular disease has prompted the introduction of a groundbreaking time-bound treatment, active stroke thrombolysis, aimed at dissolving clots obstructing blood flow to the brain.

The newly implemented thrombolysis services administer drugs and medication to dissolve blood clots during an acute ischemic stroke, offering a revolutionary approach to stroke treatment.

Dr. Fred Stephen Sarfo, Consultant Neurologist at KATH, emphasised that this innovative treatment seeks to dissolve clots, restoring blood flow to the brain and potentially curing the stroke.

“This is revolutionary and will change the stroke treatment landscape,” Dr. Sarfo declared.

He highlighted the potential for this treatment to significantly reduce paralysis and disability, contrasting it with past limitations in stroke care.

“This one almost cures the stroke so the person doesn’t have to deal with paralysis and disability.

“The approximate cost is about GH₵15,000 for treatment to be given and highly standardized and subsided at the Komfo Anokye,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai-Mensah, CEO of KATH, underscored the hospital‘s commitment to optimizing tertiary healthcare through innovation and research, urging stakeholders and the general public to act swiftly in admitting stroke patients for this specialized service.

“In line with the hospital’s new strategy to optimise the delivery of tertiary healthcare through innovation and research, the management has supported the KATH Multidisciplinary Stroke Thrombolysis Team to commence the delivery of this special service to save stroke patients brought in time to this hospital from suffering the worst possible impact of the disease.

“I will, therefore, enjoin all stakeholders, especially the peripheral hospitals and, indeed, members of the general public, to act with speed in getting stroke patients quickly admitted at KATH for this service,” he said

The Deputy Regional Director of Clinic Care, Ghana Health Service, Rita Larsen-Reindolf, expressed support for the initiative, emphasising the need for awareness and public education to address the increasing prevalence of strokes.

She pledged the readiness of the health service to champion this challenge and collaborate with KATH in advancing stroke care.

“For the immediate terms, awareness and public education are what we can capitalize on,” she added.

Amnesty International’s Country Director, Genevieve Partington, has called on the Ghanaian President to promptly approve the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, aiming to shield unjustly accused women from inhumane treatment.

Partington emphasised the importance of sending a resounding message that witchcraft accusations have no place in a modern, progressive society.

Speaking at a Tamale forum commemorating International Women’s Day, she urged collective support to stand in solidarity with vulnerable women who have endured unjust persecution.

Organised by Songtaba in collaboration with Vibrant Village Foundation, Amnesty International, Coalition Against Witchcraft Accusation, ActionAid, and OXFAM, the event focused on discussing witchcraft accusations and the fate of the Anti-Witchcraft Bill.

The private member’s bill has already secured parliamentary approval, but the President’s assent is awaited to formalise it into law.

Ms. Partington urged the public to rally behind the cause, emphasising the need to protect women who have suffered under false accusations.

Hajia Lamnatu Adam, Executive Director of Songtaba, highlighted positive strides in reintegrating alleged witches into their communities.

She noted the efforts of the Regional Reintegration Committee, which has successfully reintegrated about 220 women accused of witchcraft, closing two alleged witches’ camps and leaving four operational.

“Collectively, at the Regional Reintegration Committee, we have reintegrated about 220 women accused of witchcraft, who lived in the camps and now back home. We have also jointly disbanded or closed two of the alleged witches’ camps leaving four.”

Addressing the broader coalition of organisations advocating for the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, Chief Sintaro Sakoya Naa condemned the harmful practice of ostracising women based on unfounded accusations.
As part of the forum, the Coalition of CSOs Against Witchcraft Accusations sent an open letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging comprehensive measures to facilitate the affected women’s reintegration into society.

The coalition emphasised the need for support in areas such as healthcare, education, economic opportunities, and psychological assistance.

The Ghanaian village where phone calls are a luxury: How Abuorso residents wait once every 3 days to get network signal

A secluded farming community of Abuorso, Eastern Region, 1,500 residents face persistent challenges due to irregular mobile network coverage, forcing them to gather under a specific tree in a bamboo shed to make essential calls.

Situated 25 kilometres from Begoro, the community experiences distress as vital services and economic activities heavily rely on mobile communication, leaving them isolated from the outside world.

The makeshift communication hub, a bamboo shed under the tree, becomes a focal point where residents eagerly await network signals to make crucial calls.

Privacy concerns arise as calls must be put on loudspeakers to avoid losing the signal if the phone is moved.

The network outage not only inconveniences the residents but significantly impacts critical services such as healthcare delivery, requiring costly transportation to access the call centre due to the lack of connectivity.

Furthermore, the absence of reliable mobile coverage has emboldened armed robbers, terrorising commuters on the Abuorso to Dedeso road for over a decade.

Residents, like driver Opanyin Kwaku Kyere, attribute the increased criminal activity to the ongoing network issues and plead for urgent government intervention: “We are pleading to the government to help us get a network to enable us to communicate with our friends and family. We feel disconnected from the rest of the country.”

In light of the Sustainable Development Goal nine, emphasising increased access to information and communications technology, Abuorso residents are urging the government to address connectivity challenges swiftly, putting an end to their communication struggles and enabling them to lead connected lives.

Cancel your planned strike ; retract notice of action – NIA to Public Service Workers Union

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has implored the Public Service Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider its proposed strike, slated to commence on March 25, 2024.

The Union had officially declared its intention to initiate an indefinite strike starting March 25, contingent upon the inclusion of proposed allowances in their March 2024 payslip and the approval and implementation of their Scheme of Service (SOS) by the same date.

“Failure to meet these requests on or before the stated date would be met with an industrial strike action. All union members nationwide: at the Head Office, Regional Offices, Premium Offices, and District Offices will lay down our tools until our concerns are addressed fully,” the Union declared.

Additionally, the Union demanded the regulation of the Draft Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) by the specified deadline.

In response, the NIA, through a statement released on March 8, contended that the planned strike lacks factual, evidentiary, or legal foundation.

“Your intended action will only cause undue hardship to the public, particularly prospective consumers of NIA’s registration service across the country; it will cause needless maximum harm to the Republic of Ghana and inflict avoidable reputable damage on NIA and the Government of Ghana, in addition to spelling major revenue losses for the country,” the NIA warned.

The NIA cautioned that the intended action could inflict undue hardship on the public, especially those seeking the NIA’s registration services, and could harm the reputation of both the NIA and the Government of Ghana.

The management stressed the potential for significant revenue losses for the country.

Expressing optimism for a collaborative resolution, the NIA urged the Union to exercise good faith, sound judgement, and moderation in addressing the matter during these challenging times.

“Management also looks forward to your calling off your planned industrial action as we work together harmoniously, speedily and sincerely to improve the conditions of service of NIA within the bounds of law and public policy,” the NIA concluded.

The NIA concluded its statement by expressing hope for the Union to call off the planned industrial action, emphasizing a commitment to working together within the bounds of law and public policy to enhance the conditions of service at the NIA.

Eating ‘Koobi’ peacefully is better than eating sardine with a slap – Otchere Ankrah to U.S. Ambassador

Lecturer at Central University College, Dr. Otchere Ankrah, emphasized the importance of national sovereignty, advising U.S. Ambassador Virginia Palmer to abstain from involvement in Ghana’s domestic policies.

Dr. Ankrah asserts that Ghana, as an independent nation, is fully capable of deciding its own course on matters such as anti-LGBTQ+ issues and other national policies.

The lecturer expressed concern over external powers consistently meddling in Ghana’s affairs, urging a hands-off approach and emphasising the nation’s right to self-determination.

“Every issue the U.S wants to dictate for us, our anti-LGBTQ+ issues has nothing to do with them, the car we want to drive they decide for us, they decide how to spend our money they should mind their own issues,” Dr. Otchere Ankrah to the U.S. Ambassador.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has expressed her dismay after Parliament approved a bill aimed at promoting human sexual rights and family values, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBT bill.

“I am saddened because some of the smartest, most creative, most decent people I know are LGBT. The bill Parliament passed takes away not only their basic human rights but those of all Ghanaians because it undermines their constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press. It will be bad for public order and public health. If enacted, it will also hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy.” #USAmbPalmer,” the tweet said.

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill: Germany, other nations are contemplating demanding debt repayments – Freddie Blay

Former national chairman of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay exposed growing concerns that Germany and other nations are contemplating demanding debt repayments if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo signs the controversial anti-LGBT+ bill into law.

Blay disclosed that this potential move is seen as a protest against the bill, which critics argue is discriminatory and violates human rights principles.

Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa TV on March 8, 2024, Blay emphasised the country’s dependence on international financial assistance and highlighted Germany’s explicit warning that imposing such a bill could trigger demands for loan repayments.

“The reality is that we depend on international bodies for financial assistance, we go and borrow money from them and we pay …Germany I am aware of…says if we impose such bill, we will demand our payment on loans and no compromise on that and many other countries have said similar, IMF itself has made it clear on some of the conditions,” Freddie Blay stated.

The Ministry of Finance has issued a stern warning to President Akufo-Addo, cautioning him against assenting to the anti-LGBT+ bill.

A 5-page document released by the ministry reveals the substantial financial repercussions, with Ghana risking the loss of $3.8 billion in World Bank financing.

The document outlines potential losses for 2024, estimating a staggering $600 million in budget support and an additional $250 million earmarked for the Financial Stability Fund.

Fisherman on the run after impregnating 14-year-old girl

A 54-year-old fisherman is believed to have defiled and impregnated a 14-year-old girl in the Eikwe-Krisan neighborhood in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The police in the district have therefore launched a manhunt for the suspect whose name was given as Ndede Kojo, and hails from Axim in the Nzema East Municipality.

The father of the victim, Kwaku Annor, who confirmed the story, said, “We gave the fisherman a room in our house to enable him work since he is from a different community.”

“We travelled for a funeral and left our child in the care of a sibling and he decided to take advantage of the situation. Our daughter also could not tell us about the incident until her school’s headmistress later came to inform us about the pregnancy,” he revealed.

He said an official complaint has since been lodged with the police, who have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

The Ellembelle District Social Welfare Officer, Jonas Kabutey said the victim had been pregnant for five months, but because of her diminutive stature, her parents could not detect the pregnancy.

He said the suspect had threatened the victim not to reveal the sexual abuse to anyone, and that was why she could not inform the parents.

He revealed that the victim has been affected psychologically, and therefore unable to perform well in school.

He disclosed that his outfit was working on relocating the victim from the community to avoid stigmatisation.

He, therefore, pleaded with parents in the area to desist from settling such issues at home, whenever they occur, adding, “They should rather report them to the personnel of the law enforcement agency.”

Abuorso: A community in the Eastern Region where mobile signal appears once every 3 days

Residents of Abuorso, a secluded farming community in the Eastern Region, grapple with the challenges of irregular mobile network coverage, resorting to gathering under a specific tree to make essential calls.

The 1,500 inhabitants, situated 25 kilometers from Begoro, face distress as crucial services and economic activities rely heavily on mobile communication, leaving them disconnected from the outside world.

The makeshift gathering spot, a bamboo shed under the tree, serves as the community’s communication hub, where residents eagerly wait for network signals to make calls.

A teacher who met at the spot with other colleagues awaiting network signal described the situation, asserting, “This bamboo shed under this tree is where we gather to await network signal. We put the phones on these tables as soon as we see a network signal then we quickly make calls. The network sometimes comes after three days “.

Privacy concerns arise as calls must be put on loudspeakers to avoid losing the signal if the phone is moved, further complicating their communication efforts.

Beyond inconvenience, the network outage significantly impacts critical services such as healthcare delivery.

The in-charge of the Abourso CHPs compound highlights the challenges faced, emphasising the need for costly transportation to access the call center due to the lack of connectivity.

“The major challenge we are having is network issues. If you want to make a call, you have to pick Okada in and out of Ghc10 before you can move to the call center.”

The absence of reliable mobile coverage has also emboldened a gang of armed robbers, terrorizing commuters on the Abuorso to Dedeso road for over a decade.

Residents, like driver Opanyin Kwaku Kyere, attribute the increased criminal activity to the ongoing network issues, pleading for urgent government intervention.

“We are pleading to the government to help us get a network to enable us to communicate with our friends and family. We feel disconnected from the rest of the country.”

Residents are now urging the government to step in and address the connectivity challenges, emphasising their plea to “help us get a network to enable us to communicate with our friends and family.”

With the Sustainable Development Goal nine emphasising increased access to information and communications technology, the Abuorso community hopes for the government’s swift action to extend rural telephony infrastructure and end their communication struggles.

  • Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong disapproval of the allocation of $450 million for the National Cathedral project.

During a gathering with religious leaders in Wa as part of the “Building Ghana Tour,” Mahama criticised the prioritisation of the cathedral over pressing challenges in the education sector.

Mahama questioned the use of public funds for the cathedral, emphasising that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s personal commitment to God should be funded by individuals who share the project’s vision.

“The President said that he made a pledge to God that if he won the election he would build a Cathedral for him. So it is his personal pledge and if he wants to build it, he must gather people who support that conviction to build that and we were told that public funds were not going to be used for the Cathedral,” former president John Dramani Mahama stated.

He highlighted the contradiction between the government’s promise not to use public funds for the cathedral and the revelation that public taxes were being utilised.

“But eventually, we found that the Minister of Finance was releasing public taxes. We can’t use public funds including the funds of people of other denominations to build a Cathedral for Christians alone”, he added.

“So far, 58 million dollars of public funds have been spent just to dig a deep hole and you have to ask yourself is it justified in this day and age when children don’t have desks in schools when children do not have textbooks?”

The former President, appalled by the $58 million spent on digging a hole for the cathedral, pointed out the lack of desks and textbooks in schools.

He argued that redirecting the funds toward education, given the government’s substantial expenses on consultancy services for the cathedral, would be a more judicious use of resources.

Mahama concluded, “For five years, we have not provided our basic schools with textbooks even though we have come out with a new curriculum because we say there is no money, and you say we should use 450 million dollars to build a Cathedral, even God will be angry with us.”

“I do not eulogize dead people who were not good when they were alive!” – Blakk Rasta

Outspoken media personality and musician Abubakar Ahmed, popularly known as Blakk Rasta, has taken a bold stance, urging Ghanaians to refrain from eulogizing the late Deputy Finance Minister, John Kumah.

According to Blakk Rasta, the late Deputy Finance Minister, does not deserve any positive attributes due to his alleged role in causing economic hardship during President Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

Blakk Rasta firmly asserts that John Kumah, who recently passed away, served as a tool of destruction for ordinary Ghanaians, contributing to their suffering under the administration.

Despite the potential discomfort for the late minister’s family, Blakk Rasta emphasised that the deeds of John Kumah cannot be overlooked, citing his impact on the financial difficulties faced by the people.

In support of his argument, Blakk Rasta points to a post by President Akufo-Addo eulogizing the late John Kumah, using it as further evidence to strengthen his message.

“I do not eulogize dead people who were not good people when they were alive. He is undeserving of praise, as he, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo, caused enough hardship. I am sorry to the family, but he caused financial hardship to Ghanaians,” Blakk Rasta stated firmly.

  • GPGC contract termination makes no sense – Kwabena Donkor on $140m Judgement Debt

GPGC contract termination makes no sense – Kwabena Donkor on $140m Judgement Debt

Former Power Minister during the John Mahama administration, Dr. Kwabena Donkor has criticized the government’s decision to terminate the Ghana Power Generating Company (GPGC) contract, resulting in a $140 million judgement debt.

Dr. Donkor asserts that the termination “made no sense commercially and legally” at the time.

The Pru East MP is calling for a parliamentary investigation into the role of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and other current government officials who made the decision, insisting that the reasons provided for termination are untenable.

“It was very avoidable as I have always said. Let me quickly say this. This was the cheapest of all the emergency power plants in terms of cost. It was also the shortest because it was for four years. There was no requirement for the government of Ghana to put down a guarantee, and then again the total capacity charge made of capital recovery, fixed ONM, and non-fuel variable ONM came to 4 cents per kilowatt hour. It was the cheapest at the time of all the emergency power plants we brought in, and so it couldn’t have been on the basis of cost,” Dr Kwabena Donkor stated on PM Express.

The dispute arises from Trafigura, the majority owner of GPGC, securing an arbitral tribunal award in January 2021.

The tribunal found that Ghana unlawfully terminated a contract for the installation and operation of two power plants, leading to the substantial judgement debt.

“Every contract, at least power contracts, contain conditions for termination. My worry at the time and I raised the alarm, was that the letter signed by the then Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, stated that Trafigura or the Ghana Power Generating Company [GPGC] which was the subsidiary we had signed the contract with, had not obtained all the necessary Energy Commission permits.

“In the Power Purchase Agreement, one of the obligations of the government of Ghana was to assist the contractor obtain all relevant government of Ghana permits. And so if we turn around to use that as the basis for termination it creates a problem for all of us.”

The Ghana High Commission building in the UK and other properties are now at risk of being auctioned to cover the $140 million debt owed to Singaporean firm Trafigura.

The Finance Ministry claims steps have been taken to liquidate the debt, but Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Papa Owusu Ankomah, attributed the default to the government’s financial constraints.

The termination of the GPGC contract in 2017 was justified by the government on the grounds of high tariffs and alleged illegality.

However, Dr. Kwabena Donkor argued that the GPGC had the cheapest and shortest life span among the power purchase agreements signed in 2016.

Furthermore, Dr. Donkor contends that the government’s claim that GPGC failed to obtain necessary permits is flawed, as the Power Purchase Agreement obligated the government to assist in obtaining relevant permits.

He emphasised the importance of due process in contract termination, stating that the government failed to follow the appropriate procedures.

Dr. Donkor concluded by highlighting missed opportunities for negotiation and suggested that the termination could have been avoided with better management.

“I believe the Ghanaian state should ask the people who took the decision to terminate to tell us why they terminated. I believe that is the route to use if we have to improve our governance. Those who were responsible would have to tell us why they took that decision because commercially, and legally it doesn’t make sense.”

He called for accountability and transparency, urging Parliament to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the controversial contract termination.
