McBrown peed on herself when I took her case to court; she paid 3 billion- Maurice Ampaw

Controversial legal practitioner, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, shared a startling revelation about Ghanaian actress and media personality, Nana Ama Mcbrown.

Ampaw narrated an incident during court proceedings when Mcbrown, while still with Despite Media Group, allegedly experienced a moment of extreme nervousness, leading to an unfortunate incident of urination.

The incident unfolded a few years ago when Afia Schwarzenegger, Nana Ama Mcbrown, and UTV faced legal action for statements made on the United Showbiz show, where Afia claimed to have had a romantic involvement with Chairman Wontumi.

Afia Schwarzenegger was issued an arrest warrant, compelling her to spend 10 days in prison and pay GH¢60,000.

Afia’s legal team, led by Adrian Duke Amaning, appeared at the Tema High Court on December 20, 2022, addressing the court for the first time since Afia was out of the country when the lawsuit was initially filed.

Subsequently, Afia and her legal team approached the court a second time, pledging not to defame Chairman Wontumi’s name on any media platform.

During this intense legal battle, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw claimed that Nana Ama Mcbrown, who was present in court, succumbed to extreme nervousness, resulting in an embarrassing incident.

“Were you in court, look, Nana Ama McBrown urinated on herself, Fada Dickson paid huge sums of money, 3 billion, so no one should underestimate my credibility in court.”

Despite Media Group reportedly had to pay a substantial sum of 3 billion old Ghana Cedis as part of the legal resolution.

  • NHIS ‘useless’ in Ashanti Region – Patients complain

NHIS ‘useless’ in Ashanti Region – Patients complain

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has experienced a significant surge in registrations, with a confirmed 61% increase since 2017, according to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, the rising numbers are now raising questions about the effectiveness of the scheme, particularly in delivering quality healthcare services.

Complaints have emerged regarding NHIS subscribers purchasing medications that should be covered under the scheme.

Reports of underfunding have forced healthcare facilities to charge additional fees, burdening patients who rely on the scheme for financial support.

Beyond the statistics, the true impact of these issues is felt on the ground.

Outside hospital gates in the Ashanti region, a distressed crowd gathers, not just as concerned visitors, but as patients and family members grappling with mounting medical bills.

Gifty Boakye, whose mother is unwell, expressed frustration, describing the NHIS as ‘stale.’

She lamented the current state of the health insurance scheme, emphasizing that quality healthcare is increasingly inaccessible for those without sufficient funds.

“The health insurance scheme has become stale. Now if you don’t have enough money, you won’t receive quality health care.  Why should we suffer like this?” she quizzed.

Reports from various health facilities in the Ashanti region reveal long delays in treatment due to the absence of health insurance cards.

Essential medications are reportedly unavailable due to insufficient coverage, compelling subscribers to purchase drugs that they anticipated would be included in the NHIS.

Subscribers also highlighted instances of undisclosed fees for services supposedly covered by the scheme.

“This small illness. Look at the number of drugs they have prescribed for me. The health insurance is not working. Why will we be buying all sorts of drugs if it’s working?” a subscriber said.

“They took 20 cedis before giving me a bed in the ward here in Kumasi South Hospital and this was without receipt. I don’t even know what the scheme covered,” said another subscriber.

A lack of transparency and clarity regarding coverage has left many questioning the functionality of the NHIS.

As voices of discontent grow, individuals like Kwame Dawu shared his experiences of paying unofficial fees to secure hospital beds and purchasing expensive drugs out of pocket.

“I brought my mother but we have paid a bribe of 100 cedis before getting a bed and I could see people in wheelchairs receiving treatment in their chairs. The health insurance is not working here. I have bought all sorts of drugs for about 2,000 cedis.”

For many, the struggling health insurance scheme is not merely an administrative obstacle but a stark representation of systemic issues within the healthcare system, disproportionately affecting the less privileged.

Among the dissatisfied subscribers is Samuel Tei Wayo, who points out the unnecessary waiting period for the health insurance to take effect, leading to financial strain and delays in receiving essential medical care.

“The ones I have been given for free are not expensive, but the expensive ones are the ones we have to buy. The waiting period for health insurance to take effect is long and unnecessary.”

As the NHIS faces criticism on multiple fronts, the surge in registrations appears to be overshadowed by the pressing need for reforms to address the reported shortcomings and ensure that the healthcare system meets the needs of all citizens.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reassured the public and stakeholders that it will reveal the electoral calendar for 2024 by the close of February, maintaining the original December 7 date for the general elections despite earlier discussions for a change.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the EC for not prioritizing the release of the electoral calendar, labelling their focus on other matters as “unproductive endeavors.”

Addressing the concerns, Deputy Chair of the Commission, Dr. Bossman Asare, assured during an appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday, February 21, that the EC will soon announce the electoral calendar for 2024.

Canadian Visa Centre laments overcrowding due to applicants coming with pastors, friends

The Canadian Visa Application Centre in Abelemkpe is grappling with a surge in crowds outside its premises, a situation largely attributed to applicants arriving with family, friends, and even pastors.

The centre, which frequently witnesses long queues and individuals waiting outdoors, often exposed to the sun, is working to address concerns raised about the overcrowding issue.

Kojo Wilmot, the National Officer of the International Organization for Migration (IOM)-Canadian Visa Application Center, addressed the challenges during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Thursday, February 22.

Despite acknowledging the complaints and recognizing the need for improvement, Wilmot emphasized the center’s continuous efforts to enhance its services.

He explained that overcrowding occurs for two main reasons.

Firstly, individuals who have made a booking and secured a date often arrive with an entourage.

The security personnel, however, only permit the person who made the booking to enter for the biometric process, leading to overcrowding outside.

Secondly, some applicants show up early for their appointments, and if their allotted time has not arrived, they are required to wait, contributing to the congestion.

Wilmot advised against unnecessary entourages, asserting, “We advise that there is no need to come to the centre with a pastor to help you submit your application or undertake the biometric because, at the end of the day, we have no say in the decision that is taken.”

The center remains committed to addressing these issues and improving the overall experience for visa applicants.

I sing in Twi, Ga to boost my music career – D-Black

Renowned rapper Desmond Kwesi Blackmore, known by his stage name D-Black, shared insights into his early career tactics, highlighting strategic collaborations as the key to his mainstream breakthrough.

Speaking on his show ‘Uncut,’ D-Black disclosed that aligning with artists boasting substantial followings and singing in local dialects was instrumental in dispelling misconceptions about his nationality and amplifying his music’s appeal.

The ‘Vera’ hit-maker emphasized the importance of choosing collaborators who not only resonated with the masses but also incorporated languages like Twi.

By breaking the language barrier, D-Black effectively connected with a broader audience, addressing perceptions that his English-language raps might suggest otherwise.

D-Black reflected on the music landscape of that time, noting the limited commercial presence of Hip-hop in Ghana.

“It (Hiphop) didn’t exist commercially, people were doing it but the songs were not huge…My strategy was to always do a Hip-hop song with an artiste who was singing in a local dialect. So I will do a song with Kwabena Kwabena so that his fans or the rest of Ghana will listen to it. Just doing those collaborations I think is what broke me into the commercial scene,” D-Black said.

He strategically chose artists, such as Kwabena Kwabena, with whom he collaborated on Hip-hop tracks infused with local dialects.

“As soon as it happened for me Ghana Music Awards created Hip Hop Song of the Year because there was nowhere to fit me in. You couldn’t fit me in hiplife, so as soon as that category came I won that and it continued,” D-Black added.

This approach, as D-Black asserted, played a pivotal role in propelling him into the commercial scene, garnering more listeners and followers along the way.

Beyonce becomes first black woman to debut on top spot of Billboard country chart

The reigning queen of R&B and pop, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, known popularly as Beyonce, surprised her fans with her latest musical venture into country, as her track “Texas Hold ‘Em” became the first by a black woman to debut at the number one spot on the Billboard country chart.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Asian Network, Dr. Matthew Knowles, Beyoncé’s father, reveals the roots of this unexpected shift.

He shared that as a young child, Beyoncé spent summers in Alabama with her grandparents, who had a deep love for country music.

Dr. Knowles believed these early experiences planted the seeds for her current foray into the country genre.

Managing Beyoncé until 2011, Dr. Knowles expressed his belief that Beyoncé’s childhood memories might have played a significant role in this musical evolution.

“When Beyoncé was a little baby, and I’m talking two-three years old, she would go down and spend the summer with my parents,” Dr Knowles says.

“And her grandfather – my father – loved country music, and he used to sing to her. At an early age, she heard this music.

“And when you’re two, three years old, subconsciously music stays in your head,” Dr. Matthew Knowles stated.

He sees an opportunity for the global icon to introduce a “totally new audience” to the country music scene.

Beyoncé’s recently announced album, the second part of her Renaissance project, features the track “16 Carriages,” which swiftly secured the ninth spot on the Billboard country charts.

The anticipation is high for the full album, set to release next month, marking Beyoncé’s first complete venture into country music.

While some may find this surprising, Dr. Knowles points out that Beyoncé has dabbled in the country genre before, citing the song “Daddy Lessons” from her 2016 album “Lemonade.”

Despite its country sound, the Recording Academy rejected its submission for the country category at the Grammys.

Addressing criticisms of representation in the country music genre, Dr. Knowles believed Beyoncé’s bold move could spark positive change and attract a diverse fan base.

He encouraged the industry to view this as an opportunity to embrace new audiences rather than a challenge.

“The country music industry should really look at that as a plus not a minus, that she’s bringing a completely new audience.”

Dr. Knowles, also a businessman and lecturer, expressed his optimism about the music industry’s progress in diversity.

To further support emerging talents, he has launched a scholarship at the London College of Contemporary Music in his name.

The inaugural recipient, Polish composer and singer Anna Prasek (anMari), praised the scholarship for inspiring her to push boundaries and explore new creative avenues.

In conclusion, Dr. Knowles emphasized the importance of uniqueness in the world of music, encouraging aspiring artists to be disciplined, patient, passionate, and hardworking, echoing the advice he gave his own daughters, Beyoncé and Solange.

Always carry cash to a date  – Eddie Nartey advises women

Ghanaian actor and film director, Eddie Nartey, is making waves by sharing empowering advice for women when it comes to dating.

Encouraging a mindset of self-reliance and preparedness, Nartey challenged societal expectations surrounding relationships.

Taking to his Instagram page, Nartey delivered a straightforward message to women, urging them to be ready for unforeseen circumstances when invited on a date.

“Ladies, if a guy invites you on a date, please prepare. Carry some cash with you because you may not know what will happen. And even when you go, be mindful of what you eat,” he emphasised.

Nartey’s call for women to carry cash goes against the grain of traditional gender roles that often dictate financial dynamics in relationships.

He questioned the norm by asking women to be financially prepared, fostering a sense of self-sufficiency rather than dependency.

In a society where expectations are influenced by traditional gender roles, Nartey’s advice advocates for a more balanced approach to dating and shared responsibilities.

By challenging the stereotype that men should always be the ones to cover expenses, Nartey is contributing to a shift in mindset that promotes equality between partners.

The NSS is faced with increasing controversy amid reports of delays in the disbursement of allowances, a concern addressed by Executive Director Osei Assibey Antwi during a Public Accounts Committee session.

Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Osei Assibey Antwi, has attributed the recent delays in the disbursement of National Service personnel allowances to challenges within the personnel submission process.

This revelation was made during a session of the Public Accounts Committee sitting in Parliament.

Antwi clarified that the delay primarily originated from the personnel’s delay in submitting appointment letters and navigating the intricate validation process.

He detailed the multi-step process, starting with personnel submitting information, followed by district-level processing before entry into the system for printing.

He acknowledged the evolving dynamics of today’s youth, drawing a contrast to the time when strict adherence to submission deadlines was the norm during national service.

“The youth of today are not like us. Contrary to our time when submissions were due by the 15th of each month, it’s surprising that as of now, in February, a large number of service personnel have not submitted their appointment letters.”

Reflecting on his journey from anonymity to acclaim, Fameye shared that a Ghana Music Awards trophy now holds more importance to him than a Grammy or BET award.

In the conversation with Nana Romeo on February 21, 2024, Fameye explained that his perspective had evolved over time.

While his song “Destiny” once emphasised the prestige of Grammy and BET awards, he now places greater value on national recognition, particularly from the Ghana Music Awards.

“This is where I was born and raised. This is where I work, and this is where when I perform in my native language, my fans are excited. The support that has made me who I am came from this country. And it is when you have massive support from your home country that you can rise to those desired heights,” Fameye stated.

Fameye expressed gratitude for the support he received from his home country and recalled the inspiration he drew from witnessing Highlife and Hiplife legends receive Ghana Music Awards.

He emphasized the role of local support in shaping his success and highlighted how prestigious national awards contribute to a positive impression when international organisations like the Recording Academy (Grammys) visit Ghana.

While Fameye clarified that he is not opposed to winning a Grammy or BET award, he underscored his newfound appreciation for the Ghana Music Awards.

He suggested that continuous recognition at the local level would bring joy to his fans and contribute to their pride and support.

“If I get a Grammy or BET, I’d be glad but from now onwards, I’m saying Ghana Music Awards is heavier than the Grammys. So if I continuously win Ghana Music Awards and I move on to a Grammy and BET, my fans will be delighted.

“Ultimately, these awards, embolden and arm your fans to defend your honour when someone belittles your talent or effort,” he added. “It makes them proud of us, and proud to associate with us.”

Acknowledging that awards strengthen the connection between artists and their fans, Fameye concluded by expressing contentment with his career.

Regardless of the possibility of winning a Grammy, he emphasised that winning at the Ghana Music Awards is what matters most to him.

  • Youth unemployment increased by 14.6% in 2023 – Ghana Statistical Service

Ghana witnessed a notable 14.6% surge in youth unemployment, according to the Ghana Statistical Service.

The overall unemployment rate for the period reached 14.7%, marking a 1.1% increase from the 2022 figure.

Gender disparities became evident as female unemployment consistently outpaced male unemployment, leading to a widening gender gap compared to the previous year.

This discrepancy was particularly notable due to a significant rise in female unemployment between Q4 2022 and Q1 2023, as highlighted in the 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey Third Quarter Labour Statistics Report.

The report also revealed a progressive widening of the unemployment gap between urban and rural areas throughout the initial three quarters of 2023.

In the second and third quarters, urban unemployment rates were nearly double those in rural areas.

Regionally, only Eastern, Bono East, Oti, and Upper West reported unemployment rates below the national average across all quarters, while Greater Accra and the Ashanti region consistently experienced rates surpassing the national average.

The high unemployment in Ghana is attributed to a misalignment between education and the skills demanded by the labor market.

Renowned radio broadcaster, Nana Romeo,  shared a thought-provoking perspective, suggesting that approximately 50% of women maintain backup plans in case their current relationships falter.

The controversy stems from Shatta Wale’s past dismissal of the media’s significance in his career, prompting Nana Romeo to question the artist’s shift in approach.

In a recent interview on Asempa FM, Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex, engaged in a media tour to promote the “Konekt” album, leading Nana Romeo to criticise the artiste’s change in stance.

Nana Romeo recalled Shatta Wale’s previous remarks, where he claimed not to need the media for his musical success.

“Shatta Wale once said he does not need the media because they have not helped him. If that is the case, then why is his manager embarking on a media tour to market his project?

“Shatta has insulted the media on several occasions so why is he using the same media to sell his project [promotion of his Konekt album]? It baffles me,” Nana Romeo stated.

Expressing his preference for variety in brand partnerships, Comedian Waris asserted, “I will never post three content from one company in a week.”

Additionally, he revealed that while various social media platforms offer lucrative opportunities, Instagram tends to pay less compared to others.

Comedian Waris shared that his highest earnings from Facebook exceeded $9,000 (GH¢112,529.25), emphasising the platform’s financial viability for content creators.

He attributed the success of Nigerian comedians to effective monetization strategies, enabling them to make significant investments in assets like houses and cars.

The comedian lamented the lack of a PayPal head office in Ghana for convenient money withdrawal and stressed the need for a structured approach to content creation management.

Failed COCOBOD CEO must resign – Tamale Central MP demands

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed has taken aim at the Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod), Joseph Boahen Aidoo, accusing him of failing to bring about substantial improvements to the cocoa sector during his tenure.

Muhammed expressed disappointment, asserting that Aidoo has fallen short in effectively addressing the significant challenges plaguing cocoa overproduction.

In an exclusive interview on Citi TV, Muhammed called for the resignation of the Chief Executive, citing perceived indifference and a lack of tangible progress since Aidoo assumed office.

During the interview, Muhammed highlighted the persistent nature of the issues, drawing parallels between Aidoo’s current administration and his past role.

Muhammed criticised Aidoo’s approach, asserting, “When you appear before a Public Account Committee, you are supposed to be telling us the solutions you have provided in solving some of the problems. What the CEO of the Cocoa Board did was lament throughout, telling us the problems Cocoa Board is facing. My question is simple: you were appointed to provide solutions to problems. What measures are you putting in place to overcome them? If there was a problem last year and you were brought in to resolve it and couldn’t, don’t you think it’s fair to call for your resignation?”

The organisation in 2021 faced a GH¢2 billion loss which it attributed to the significant decline in the international market price of cocoa.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Accra, Mr Aidoo highlighted the challenges posed by the sharp drop of over 30% in cocoa prices on the global market in recent years.

He emphasized that this decline, coupled with increased production, contributed to the substantial loss incurred by COCOBOD.

“Chairman we are on the path of a turnaround. COCOBOD’s financial situation is dictated by the international market Price, that’s the world cocoa price, and we all know that from 2017 to the date in question, the price of cocoa in the world market has collapsed by 30%. And in 2020 that is also when we had our highest production.

“So when prices collapsed at the time when we had increased yield. That is the direct cost and inventory go up whereas the revenue generated goes down.

“That is what explains the huge deficit for the particular year. Essentially yes we had record production, the prices at the international market did not favour us,” he stated.

Rashida Black Beauty allegedly pregnant for Prophet Prince

Ghanaian social media influencer Rashidatu Mohammad, known popularly as Rashida Black Beauty, has recently claimed that she is expecting a child fathered by Prophet Prince Elisha Osei Kofi, the founder of Grace Family International Church.

This revelation comes after Rashida previously accused the religious leader of coercing her into a sexual relationship while purportedly supporting her dream of becoming a fashion designer.

Supported by leaked chats and screenshots, Rashida detailed the alleged events, asserting that what was initially intended as a business meeting between them turned into a series of sexual encounters at a guest house in Achimota.

One of the moderators of their group discussion on TikTok asked, “So what are the pastor’s plans now that he has slept with Rashida?”

Rashida responded, “I am currently pregnant. That’s what is currently on the ground.”

The response triggered another question from the moderator, “Then we have to let the pastor know so he can take responsibility for that child?”

But Rashida, who seems uninterested in keeping the baby said, “Who is going to birth that child?”

When asked about the pastor’s responsibility, she expressed disinterest in keeping the baby, raising questions about the future of the child.

As of now, Prophet Prince Elisha Osei Kofi has not issued a response to Rashida’s series of allegations.

The man, seeking to cause harm to his wife Felicia and her family, reportedly consulted fetish priest Nana Akorley based on a recommendation from a friend.

The alleged plans included causing the death of his wife, injuring his brother-in-law, and inducing amnesia in his stepson, who resides in Canada.
