How does changing of names of universities solve increase in graduate unemployment- Mahama quizzed

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has expressed skepticism regarding former President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to rename public universities upon assuming office in 2025.

Anyidoho questioned Mahama’s emphasis on renaming institutions, asserting that the focus should be on job creation and advancing a better Ghana agenda during his potential presidency.

During a discussion on Peace FM, Anyidoho remarked, “How does that solve graduate unemployment? Changing names is normal; the question is, what impact does renaming have, and we are using it as a tool for political mediocrity.”

He continued to emphasize that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should concentrate on persuading the public to garner votes for the party.

Anyidoho expressed frustration at the opposition allowing the ruling party to set the agenda, asserting, “We have sat down as an opposition party, and we are allowing the ruling party to set an agenda. It’s annoying and painful. So, if Bawumia comes and delivers his public address, including this in his submissions, what is he going to do?” Anyidoho quizzed.

John Mahama has declared that if the NDC comes into office in 2025, it will revert the names of public universities.

Mahama accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of merely renaming universities constructed by the NDC, emphasizing that the NPP had not established any new universities while in office.

Mahama asserted that while administration blocks, hostels, and libraries could bear the names of individuals, the core names of public universities should reflect their original purpose.

“And so we will restore the original names, and the names that they have given them, will be given to a significant infrastructure in the Universities.

“We will add other people and name the infrastructure in the Universities after them. But if the University is University for Development Studies, that is its core mandate. It will be called the University for Development Studies,” he stated.

How can you be a driver’s mate? Kwesi Pratt asks Bawumia

Managing Editor of Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr. has condemned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s recent comments comparing his role to a driver’s mate in the New Patriotic administration.

Pratt accused Bawumia of evading responsibility for the current economic challenges and constructing a false narrative to distance himself from the government’s failures.

During a discussion on Peace FM, Pratt expressed his dismay, stating, “Bawumia is not owning up to his truth; he is running away from the economic mess they created. Why assume to be a trotro mate if you were part of the same government. So if the driver messes up don’t align me to his mistakes that’s what he is claiming, that he has his own path.”

He criticised Bawumia’s analogy of being a trotro mate and asserts that it is an attempt to deflect blame from the administration’s mismanagement.

Pratt further exposed what he believes to be a calculated strategy, claiming that Bawumia’s comments are a ploy to craft a falsehood about a new direction if elected into power.

The renowned journalist challenges the Vice President’s sincerity, suggesting that the analogy is a deceptive manoeuvre to reshape his image and agenda.

The critique comes in response to Vice President Bawumia’s compelling address at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, where he outlined his vision for Ghana’s future in the 2024 general elections.

Bawumia had drawn parallels between his current role as Vice-President and that of a driver’s mate, emphasising a transformative vision if he assumes the presidency.

“As Vice-President I am like a driver’s mate. But if, by the Grace of God, you make me President, I will be in the driversseat with constitutionally mandated authority to pursue my vision and my priorities. So, what do I want to do in terms of vision, priorities and policies if you give me the opportunity, by the Grace of God, to become President of the Republic of Ghana?”

I will provide tax amnesty to safeguard businesses and the vulnerable in society – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chosen candidate for the 2024 presidential race, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged a comprehensive tax amnesty for both citizens and businesses as part of a broader plan to revamp the country’s tax system.

The proposed changes aim to enhance tax revenue by expanding the tax base and introducing a more straightforward, transparent, and accountable approach.

During a recent address outlining his vision for the nation, the Vice President, set to lead the NPP in the upcoming election, criticised the existing tax structure, citing its failure since independence.

He emphasised the need for a new regime that is easy to comprehend, comply with, and enforce, minimising discretion and reducing corruption.

To incentivize those outside the current tax net, the candidate plans to implement a citizen and business-friendly digitised flat tax system.

“The current tax regime has been with us since independence and it has failed us. Many people do not pay taxes (including property taxes). Too much discretion results in corruption. We want a regime that is easy to understand, easy to comply with and easy to enforce and that is not subject to so much discretion,” the Vice President said on February 6, during an address about his objective for the country in his quest to become President.

Dr. Bawumia, the Vice President, expressed confidence that these reforms, coupled with appropriate exemption thresholds to protect the economically vulnerable, will encourage compliance and help recover an estimated $24 billion in uncollected taxes.

As a pivotal step towards the digitalization of tax processes, the Vice President pledged to eradicate manual or paper filing by 2025.

“To start the new tax system on a clean slate, my government will provide a tax amnesty (i.e. a complete exemption from the payment of taxes for a specified period and the waiving of interest and penalties) up to a certain year to individuals and businesses for failures to file taxes in previous years so that everyone will start afresh.”

Additionally, to provide a fresh start, a tax amnesty will be granted for a specified period, offering complete exemption from tax payments along with the waiving of interest and penalties for individuals and businesses that failed to file taxes in previous years.

The proposed reforms align with the Vice President’s commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in the country’s financial landscape.

Same script, writer and plot but different ink; we will not be deceived—Sam George blasts Bawumia

The Member of Parliament representing the Ningo-Prampram constituency, Sam George has strongly criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s recent address at the University of Ghana.

The Vice President outlined his visions for the nation, particularly if elected president in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Among the notable proposals presented by Dr. Bawumia were the cancellation of the controversial e-levy, the abolition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity, the elimination of emission tax, and the introduction of zipline technology to enhance the healthcare sector.

However, Sam George did not mince words in his response to the Vice President’s address.

He labelled the entire presentation as a “total falsehood” and devoid of merits.

George went further to express his scepticism about the vision presented by Bawumia, suggesting that it was either a product of clear confusion or a deliberate attempt to mislead the Ghanaian people.

Taking to Twitter, Sam George posted his reactions, stating, “Same Script. Same Writer. Same Plot. Different Ink. Bawumia is either clearly confused or deliberately misleading the Ghanaian people. This is not a new chapter. It is simply Act 1, Scene 2 of the horror movie we have been living since 2017. We would respond appropriately!”

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram constituency accused the Vice President of presenting a different chapter but with the same claims and falsehoods.

The exchange highlights the growing political tensions as the 2024 elections draw nearer, with both sides expressing divergent views on the future direction of the country.

The revelation came as she responded to a talk show discussing the challenges faced by single women.

Blessing, a mother of one, emphasised that her decision to marry at an older age wasn’t just a choice but a path of self-discovery, resilience, and a break from societal expectations.

She shared, “After several years of feeling like an outsider in a world that often links a woman’s worth to her marital status, I’ve finally entered a chapter that I crafted on my own terms.”

The actress went on to highlight the pressure and stigma she faced, describing them as unwelcome shadows casting doubts and lonely nights.

Despite these challenges, Blessing found strength in solitude, realising that love is not a race, and marriage is not a trophy for early achievement.

She encouraged others on a similar journey, saying, “Your life, your pace, your story. Embrace it.”

Blessing Obasi and Stan Nze, despite an age gap, exchanged vows on September 11, 2021, in Lagos.

The actress sees her marriage as a celebration of wisdom gained over the years, ready to embark on a shared journey of love, respect, and partnership.

“You know, I had to jump on this conversation because after several years of feeling like an outsider in a world that often equates a woman’s worth with her marital status, I’ve finally stepped into a chapter that I crafted on my own terms.

“Getting married at an older age wasn’t just a choice; it was a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and breaking free from societal norms that tried to dictate my happiness.

“The pressure and stigma were like unwelcome shadows, whispering doubts and casting long, lonely nights. But in those moments of solitude, I found strength. I learned that love isn’t a race, nor is marriage a trophy for early achievement. It’s about finding someone who understands the chapters of your past and wants to write the future ones with you.

“So here I am, not a bride of youthful naivety, but a woman adorned in the wisdom of her years, ready to embark on a shared journey of love, respect, and partnership. And to those still walking their path, remember: your life, your pace, your story. Embrace it.”

McBrown never threatened my son; ignore such false claims – Nana Yaa Brefo

Outspoken media personality, Nana Yaa Brefo, has set the record straight, refuting claims that threats against her son were linked to her dispute with actress Nana Ama McBrown.

Contrary to reports following her TV3 interview, Brefo emphasized that she never explicitly asserted McBrown was the cause of the threats.

In a candid TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb, Nana Yaa Brefo clarified the misunderstanding, asserting that her comments referred to the general challenges faced in Ghana’s political space rather than attributing the threats to her clash with McBrown.

“I want to issue a disclaimer to a publication I’ve seen on social media. The story was about my interview with TV3 where I said after my issue with McBrown on Adom TV I received threats that were targeted at my son. You can listen to the interview again; I never said she was the reason why I had threats towards my son,” Brefo stated.

This clarification follows Brefo’s interview with Naa Ashorkor on TV3, where she was reported to have linked her son’s threats to the fallout with McBrown during her time at Adom TV.

However, she maintains that she was “misunderstood and taken out of context.”

The longstanding feud between Nana Ama McBrown and Nana Yaa Brefo dates back to 2020 when Brefo accused McBrown of disrespect during an interview about the late Actor Benard Nyarko.

The fallout intensified, leading to Brefo’s resignation from Adom TV and an apology from her former employers to McBrown.

The unresolved tensions have continued to be a topic of discussion, with Brefo expressing feelings of betrayal and disrespect during subsequent interviews.

As Nana Yaa Brefo embarks on her new role with Onua TV, the clarification aims to set the record straight regarding the nature of the threats against her son.

Media personality Nana Yaa Brefo has addressed speculations about her relationship with actress Nana Ama McBrown, asserting that they have resolved any past issues and are now good friends working harmoniously within the same media organization, Media General.

In a recent TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb, Nana Yaa Brefo emphasised the amicable nature of her current connection with McBrown, debunking any notions of lingering animosity.

She highlighted moments of camaraderie, including a warm welcome from McBrown on social media and friendly interactions in person.

“If someone contracts me to work, there is no need for me to feel bitter about an individual and plan for revenge, I wouldn’t do that. If I pass a comment, people try to connect it to the issue. I want you to know that we don’t have any bad blood. Even if there are people I want to hate it will not be her [McBrown]. Sometimes bad things happen to benefit us in a way.

“She congratulated me nicely and welcomed me on social media to the family. The last time I saw her she spotted me first, stopped her car and told me to buy something for her and we all laughed and left. I don’t care about your mindset but don’t insinuate that I have bitterness in me,” she said in a TikTok live session monitored by GhanaWeb.

This development comes as Nana Yaa Brefo joined Media General’s Onua TV, where McBrown is currently employed.

The rift between the two media personalities dates back to 2020, stemming from an interview about actor Benard Nyarko’s death.

The situation escalated, leading to Nana Yaa Brefo’s resignation and public apologies from her employer to McBrown.

Now, with both individuals seemingly on good terms, the publicised discord appears to be a thing of the past as they collaborate professionally within the same media group.

I will provide incentives to farmers to boost production if voted to power – Alan Kyerematen

Independent Presidential aspirant, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has laid out a comprehensive vision to uplift farmers in the agricultural sector, pledging transformative measures if successful in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Mr Kyerematen has committed to providing crucial incentives for farmers, aiming to facilitate easier access to financing and consequently boost overall agricultural production.

Addressing the issue of produce wastage at farm gates due to transportation challenges, he has promised to implement measures to reduce transportation and logistics costs significantly.

The leader of the Movement for Change has also assured the public of his dedication to enhancing irrigation systems, vowing to introduce a novel financing scheme to elevate both agricultural production and productivity.

During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Mr Kyerematen emphasised the importance of affordable agricultural financing, asserting, “To reduce distribution and transport costs, you have to provide incentives to improve the distribution and marketing regime. Agricultural production, number 1, is access to affordable agricultural financing.”

The former Trade Minister further stressed the need for a distinct financing approach, highlighting that a lending rate exceeding 9% would be unsustainable for agricultural productivity.

Over 500,000 hectares of cocoa farms destroyed by swollen shoot disease – COCOBOD

The Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has raised alarm over the severe impact of the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Disease (CSSVD), disclosing that more than 500,000 hectares of cocoa farms in Ghana have succumbed to the disease.

This revelation poses a significant threat to the country’s cocoa production.

During a panel discussion at a World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) partnership meeting in Amsterdam, Mr. Aidoo acknowledged the gravity of the challenge.

However, he offered assurances that comprehensive measures have been implemented to tackle the CSSVD issue and prevent further devastation.

In addition to CSSVD, Mr Aidoo emphasised the adverse effects of illegal mining and climate change on cocoa production in Ghana.

The unregulated mining industry is causing deforestation, soil degradation, and water pollution, negatively impacting cocoa tree growth.

Climate change, with rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and prolonged droughts, is further compromising cocoa tree health and reducing output.

To combat the CSSVD challenge, COCOBOD initiated the Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme in 2018.

This program aims to halt the spread of the disease, restore unproductive farms, and enhance the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.

Activities under the rehabilitation program include identifying diseased farms, cutting down affected trees, replanting with disease-resistant cocoa varieties, compensating affected farmers, and promoting good agricultural practices.

Mr Aidoo underscored the significance of ensuring sustainable incomes for cocoa farmers, citing initiatives like the Living Income Differential (LID) and recent substantial increases in Ghana’s Producer Price for cocoa farmers as crucial steps forward.

Despite these efforts, Mr. Aidoo stressed the necessity for a collective commitment across the industry to prioritize the sustainable incomes of cocoa farmers, backed by concrete actions to ensure their realization.

The Director General of Conseil du Café Cacao, Mr. Yves Brahima Koné, echoed concerns about the significant threat CSSVD poses to West African cocoa production.

Taylor Swift takes legal action against student tracking her private jet flights

Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Jack Sweeney, a 21-year-old student who publicly tracks the private jet movements of celebrities.

Swift’s lawyers argue that Sweeney’s activities amount to “stalking,” posing an imminent threat to her safety and wellbeing.

The cease-and-desist letter, sent in December, emphasizes the life-or-death nature of the situation for Swift, citing her past experiences with stalkers.

The letter contends that sharing the location of her private jet provides criminals with a “roadmap to carry out their plans.”

Sweeney, a University of Central Florida student, asserts that he has no intention of causing harm and believes in transparency and public information.

He received the threatening letter after media scrutiny of Swift’s carbon footprint, particularly her high private jet CO2 emissions in 2022, topping the list of celebrities.

In response to the legal action, Sweeney asserted to the BBC, “nowhere do I intend for harm,” and revealed that he started tracking Swift’s flights after heightened media attention on her environmental impact.

Swift’s spokesperson attributed the timing of recent stalking incidents to Sweeney’s posts, which detailed the exact whereabouts and timing of the artist.

The singer’s upcoming travel plans, including attending her boyfriend’s NFL Super Bowl performance in Las Vegas, have further fueled public interest.

It’s important to note that Sweeney’s posts focus solely on flight details and do not disclose information about the individuals on board or their subsequent activities.

    Ghana?

We have done many good things and I will be seeking to build on them,” Bawumia stated.
