Chiefs play a crucial role in the fight against child marriage – U/E CNC Director

The Upper East Regional Director of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), Collins Ahmed-Edwards emphasized the crucial role Chiefs must play in combating child marriage within their communities.

Speaking at educational events in the Bongo District, Ahmed-Edwards highlighted the influential authority chiefs hold and their ability to mobilize communities against teenage pregnancy and child marriage.

“There is no doubt that as chiefs you have a pivotal role to play in the crusade towards ending child marriage which had shuttered the dreams of many teenage girls in societies. It is therefore important for parents to protect them to prevent them from getting pregnant,” Collins Ahmed-Edwards stated.

During the initiative, organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the CNC, Ahmed-Edwards addressed various communities, including Zorkor-Kudurogu, Naamo, Bongo Feo, and Bongo Beo.

The events featured drama performances by the Upper East Movie Makers Association, illustrating the detrimental effects of child marriage and advocating for the support of girls’ aspirations.

Ahmed-Edwards stressed the need for chiefs to adapt to the evolving culture by discarding norms that perpetuate child marriage.

He expressed concern about the health risks teenage girls face during pregnancy and emphasised the importance of protecting them to prevent early marriages.

“As a society, we must prevent such needless deaths by preventing teenage girls from getting pregnant which often forces them into early marriage”.

Naba Amaletinga, Chief of Soboko, who chaired the event, urged the government to allocate funds to the CNC for widespread education on child marriage.

Commending the CNC and UNICEF for their efforts, he called on parents to take the issue seriously to safeguard the future of teenage girls.

“Ghost names” are non-existent on gov’t payroll – Controller and Accountant General

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning Bosompem in a significant breakthrough  has declared the successful elimination of ghost names from the country’s payroll database.

This achievement is attributed to the implementation of a comprehensive digital solution that integrates the Government of Ghana (GOG) National Mechanized Payroll Database with the National Identification Authority (NIA) database.

The innovative system incorporates a real-time biometric validation and verification process, decentralised to various verification centres nationwide under the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD).

This decentralisation ensures enhanced accessibility and convenience for the verification process.

Bosompem issued a stern warning that, effective March 2024, any public sector worker without a Ghana Card risks losing their salary.

This announcement was made during the 2024 Controller and Accountant General’s Department Annual Conference in Kumasi.

During his address, Bosompem emphasised, “The payroll database has been an active database all these years. What it means is that we’ve gone through a process of putting interventions in place to ensure the payroll database is credible, and there would not be any instance where we’ll find an unauthorised person existing on the payroll and benefiting from the government’s resources.”

Responding to questions from journalists, Bosompem confidently asserted, “…There are no ghost names [on government’s payroll] recently…”

Nigerian stars who missed out on winning the 2024 Grammys in all 10 categories

The star-studded Grammy award ceremony held in Los Angeles on February 5, 2024 saw Nigerian music sensations Burna Boy and Davido leading their contingent with 4 and 3 nominations respectively.

In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria’s Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide contributed to a total of 10 nominations, but the country faced disappointment as none of its artists secured wins in the 4 nominated categories.

Tyla emerged victorious in the maiden African Music Performance category.

Despite missing out on major awards, the night had moments of glory for the Nigerian music scene, with Davido and Burna Boy graciously accepting defeats in the Global Album and Global Music Performance categories. Burna Boy also lost the Best Melodic Rap Performance to Lil Durk’s ‘All My Life.’

The highlight for the African continent came when Burna Boy took the stage, delivering a stellar performance of some of his chart-topping hits, showcasing the vibrancy and talent of Nigerian artists on the international stage.

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus emerged as big winners, each clinching four gramophones, with Swift making history by securing her fourth Album of the Year award.

In a significant milestone, Monét became the first female R&B artist since Alicia Keys in 2002 to win Best New Artist.

  • I am no longer a sympathizer of the NPP – Wutah Kobby

I am no longer a sympathizer of the NPP – Wutah Kobby

One member of the now-defunct music group Wutah, Wutah Kobby has disclosed that he is no longer a sympathizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dismissing any party loyalty, he disclosed that endorsing a political party is purely a business strategy employed by musicians to capitalise on the election hype.

Kobby emphasised that such decisions are critical for musicians, as they can either positively or negatively impact their careers.

He stressed that his allegiance lies with his career and the financial well-being of himself and his family, making him open to endorsing any political party that approaches him, whether it be the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or NPP.

Addressing his past association with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kobby clarified that it was a historical connection that no longer holds sway.

He emphasised that his current stance is solely grounded in the business aspect of making music and securing his livelihood.

“In endorsing a political party, it’s purely the business aspect of doing music. I work to make a living, so when a political party contacts me for endorsement, it doesn’t matter which party it is. It’s got nothing to do with party affiliation, and back in the day, I had political party affiliation, but right now, I don’t belong to any political organisation,” he affirmed.

As the 2024 election season looms, Ghanaian musicians are donning their party colours, turning the political landscape into a lucrative stage for their performances.

Recognized as the “cocoa season” for musicians, election years provide a unique opportunity for artists to showcase their talents on political platforms, albeit with significant financial risks as they command high fees for their services.

Late Dr. Grace Boadu has a daughter – Brother reveals

The brother of the owner of Grace Gift Herbal Hospital, the late Dr. Grace Boadu, identified as Emmanuel, has confirmed the existence of her daughter, who lives in Belgium.

He refuted false claims circulating on social media regarding the circumstances leading to her death.

Emmanuel, who serves as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Grace Gift Herbal Hospital, emphasised that being from the same hometown as the deceased doesn’t automatically confer family status.

He urged the public to disregard unauthorised individuals presenting themselves as family members and reassured that the family would address the public officially.

Furthermore, he disclosed that Dr. Grace Boadu’s mother and daughter, currently in Belgium, are expected to arrive in Ghana soon to initiate the necessary funeral arrangements.

Emmanuel encouraged the public to await an official statement from the family, cautioning against believing unverified sources spreading misinformation.

“The fact that you are from the same hometown as the deceased does not make you her family member. All these claims are not true. The family has not sat down to officially address the public. Don’t pay heed to anyone parading themselves as Dr. Grace’s uncle, sister, brother, and so on

“My mother, Doc’s mother, is in Belgium and not America as people are saying. She and Doc’s daughter are in Belgium. The family will hold a press conference to address the rumours on social media,” he said in an interview on Angel FM.

Ghanaian youth unexplained airport check sparks outcry and allegations of racial profiling

A viral video circulating on social media sheds light on a troubling incident at an airport where a Ghanaian youth, preparing to board a flight in the next 30 minutes, was unexpectedly subjected to a rigorous security check without apparent justification.

  • You won’t win 2024 elections by attacking LGBTQ community – Sister Derby tells Mahama

You won’t win 2024 elections by attacking LGBTQ community – Sister Derby tells Mahama

Ghanaian singer and LGBTQ advocate, Sister Derby, has called out politicians for their “dishonest” and “insensitive” stance on LGBTQ rights.

In a recent social media post, she criticized politicians, including former president John Mahama, for using religion and culture to appeal to anti-LGBTQ sentiments while avoiding offence to queer acquaintances and business partners.

“Our politicians always choose their words carefully because they all have acquaintances and business partners who are queer so they would never say they are against LGBTQ people but they would rather say carefully that they are against marriage between persons of the same sex,” Sister Derby stated.

Sister Derby emphasized that politicians are sidestepping the crucial issues faced by the LGBTQ community in Ghana, such as discrimination, violence, and the denial of basic human rights.

She argued that politicians carefully choose their words to maintain a delicate balance, opting to express opposition to same-sex marriage rather than addressing the broader challenges confronting LGBTQ individuals.

Asserting that LGBTQ individuals in Ghana are not demanding marriage, which is not legally recognized in many countries, Sister Derby urged politicians to focus on respecting the basic human rights and dignity of the LGBTQ community.

“LGBTQ persons in Ghana NEVER asked for marriage. They only ask for basic human rights and to be left in peace.

“Politicians ride on the wave of homophobia and transphobia to get the masses who are brainwashed with religion to vote for them.”

She called on politicians to refrain from exploiting homophobia and transphobia to secure votes, emphasising that religion should not be weaponized against the rights of LGBTQ people.

Sister Derby, a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights in Ghana, has actively engaged in campaigns and music projects to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of queer individuals.

Despite facing backlash and threats for her stance, she remains defiant and outspoken in her commitment to promoting LGBTQ rights in the country.
