    5 amphitheaters promised by gov’t are about 70% complete – Okraku-Mantey

Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, has reported that the construction of the five amphitheatres promised by the government is approximately 70 percent complete.

In October 2022, Dr. Mohammed Awal, then Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, announced a plan to build five amphitheatres by the end of 2022, with an additional five slated for 2023.

The goal was to establish performance venues across all 16 regions by 2024.

However, two years later, there are concerns that the projects are still unfinished.

At a Creative Arts forum hosted by 3Entertainment on August 30, 2024, Okraku-Mantey assured attendees that the amphitheatres are nearing completion.

“The amphitheatres are about 70 percent done,” he is reported by 3news.com to have said.

The amphitheatres, part of President Akufo-Addo’s 2020 manifesto for the creative arts sector, began with a sod-cutting ceremony at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Kumasi in April of the previous year.

Plans include similar venues in Tamale, Accra, and Takoradi, each with a capacity of up to 1,000 people.

Despite the progress report, there are ongoing calls for the government to upgrade the National Theatre to a more modern facility.

I refuse to be broke, Why should Gospel musicians be poor? – Brother Sammy quizzes

Ghanaian gospel artist Brother Sammy recently shared his perspective on the debate surrounding whether gospel musicians should charge for their performances.

In an interview with Neat FM on March 29, 2024, he argued that there’s no reason gospel musicians should be financially struggling.

Brother Sammy emphasized that many critics overlook that gospel music is a legitimate source of income for the artists involved.

He firmly stated, “I refuse to be broke! Why should gospel musicians and pastors always be poor?”

He highlighted that while the work is for God, it also involves real labor deserving of compensation.

In response to a fellow gospel artist who only accepts donations rather than charging for shows, Brother Sammy noted that it’s a personal choice but stressed that gospel musicians should be paid for their work.

He recounted a past experience where, after performing at a church in Mankessim, he received no payment.

Instead, he ended up spending the night on a security guard’s chair and had to use his own money to return home, despite the pastor having raised funds using his name.

Brother Sammy underscored that gospel artists should ideally be paid upfront to prevent such issues.

My absence from music in 2023 was due to ‘Juju’ attack – Kweku Darlington

Ghanaian Hiplife artist Kweku Darlington has opened up about his extended hiatus from music throughout 2023.

In an interview with Joy Prime on August 30, 2024, he revealed that he had been battling a severe illness caused by malicious black magic, or ‘juju,’ from people he once considered friends.

Darlington described the ordeal as taking a significant physical and emotional toll, with the effects even visible on his skin, leaving lasting marks.

He explained that the intention behind the attack was to confine him and prevent him from performing and engaging with his fans.

“It was an extremely tough time for me,” Darlington recounted. “People I trusted turned against me, using dark practices to hinder my career. The idea was to keep me indoors, limiting my ability to perform and be active.”

Now, Darlington is recovering and feeling better, ready to resume his musical career after a challenging year.

Work hard to attain success, don’t feel entitled – Nana Awindor tells young women

Nanahemaa Nana Adwoa Awindor, a well-known Ghanaian media personality and former host of “Greetings from Abroad,” has urged young women to earn their achievements rather than expecting them based on gender alone.

Speaking at the 2024 Youth Week celebrations held at the Assemblies of God Cedar Mountain Chapel in Accra, Awindor emphasized that merit should be the basis for earning positions.

She stressed that while affirmative action can create pathways for women, success should come from hard work rather than entitlement.

Awindor pointed out that today’s women have more opportunities to advance if they put in the effort and don’t rely on shortcuts or unfair advantages.

“I have said it over and again, as a woman, you don’t have to wait for a position to be given to you because you are a woman. No, the position has to be given to you because you deserve that space.

“You have worked your way to the space. You didn’t backpass, you didn’t bootlick, and you didn’t slip out, and you didn’t do anything ill. You worked your way to that position,” she said.

Reflecting on the progress of Ghanaian women, Awindor highlighted their achievements in high-profile roles within the judiciary and other sectors.

She expressed optimism about future possibilities, noting that women are now aspiring to even greater positions, including vice-presidential and presidential roles.

Awindor concluded by affirming that affirmative action provides hope and a chance to strive for more significant roles, but it should be based on deserving efforts rather than entitlement.

“So this Affirmative Action gives us the opportunity to hope for more. Not for free, but because we deserve to be there so we can all use it, or we can have opportunities available, and it gives us hope. So we can work towards getting a lot more space than we had before,” she said.

My mother almost aborted me- Esther Smith reveals

Ghanaian gospel artist Esther Smith recently opened up about a deeply personal and emotional chapter of her life during an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM on August 29, 2024.

She revealed that her life nearly ended before it began, as her mother, then a young schoolgirl, had initially planned to terminate her pregnancy.

This difficult decision was influenced by the challenging circumstances surrounding Esther’s conception.

Esther recounted how her grandmother grew suspicious of her mother’s behavior on the day she intended to visit Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for the abortion.

“My mother wanted to abort me,” she said. “On the day, she was going to KATH for the abortion. Her mother suspected something and asked where she was headed and started following her around.”

Following her instincts, the grandmother trailed her daughter and confronted her about her plans. Faced with the truth, Esther’s mother admitted her intentions.

Despite initially not wanting the child, Esther’s father stepped in when he learned of the planned abortion, putting a stop to it.

“Even my father who didn’t even want me, when he realised that my mother wanted to abort me, he stopped her.

“She had taken a lot of drugs to help with the abortion but none of them worked,” she added.

Esther also shared that her mother had resorted to various methods in an attempt to end the pregnancy, but none were successful.

During this time of uncertainty, a pastor prophesied that the unborn child would go on to make a significant impact on the country.

Reflecting on her journey, Esther recognized the divine intervention that ultimately saved her life, allowing her to rise as a celebrated figure in Ghanaian gospel music.

She also reminisced about her early experiences in music, revealing that the first song she ever wrote was titled “Ewurade Wo Din No Hyeren” (LORD, Your Name is Glorious).

At the age of 14, she joined the Methodist Church Choir in Kumasi and later, at 16, became part of the Voices of Faith choir at House of Faith Ministries.

It was during this time that she began to write her own songs, marking the start of her successful career in gospel music.

Their online activity has heightened rumors, with fans noting that they’ve been spotted in matching outfits and at the same locations, as well as seeing ‘faceless’ photos of them together.

This has led to widespread speculation about their relationship status.

Embrace the title of Ghana’s greatest gospel musician – OB tells Esther Smith

Ace broadcaster Osei Bonsu, known as OB, has praised gospel legend Esther Smith as the greatest gospel musician in Ghana’s history.

Speaking on his ‘Ekosiisen’ show on Asempa FM, OB highlighted Smith’s impressive career, noting her nine successful albums over twenty-four years as evidence of her exceptional contributions to gospel music.

OB acknowledged the talents of other renowned gospel artists but firmly believes Smith’s achievements set her apart, warranting recognition as the finest in the genre.

He emphasized her sustained prominence and the impactful nature of her music, stating,”It’s an honour you have to wear because you’ve worked for it. You have nine albums, and almost every song on the albums was a hit, so you deserve the honour, and you have to wear it with pride.

“To be at the top of the industry for over twenty-four years means that you’ve done incredible work and deserve the accolades. You can hold yourself up against any gospel musician in the past and present. There are great musicians, but you’ve been outstanding,” he said.

In response, Esther Smith remained modest, choosing not to engage in the debate over the title.

“This is not the first time someone has told me that, but I don’t really like the comparisons because it can get unhealthy at times. I prefer to keep my silence and allow the songs to perform the magic in people. I’m not a huge fan of the title,” she said.

She expressed that her primary goal is to inspire and lead people to God through her music, rather than focusing on accolades. Smith also acknowledged the contributions of earlier musicians who paved the way for her.

“This isn’t the first time someone has called me the greatest, but I prefer not to engage in such comparisons. I’d rather let my music speak for itself,” she remarked.

The conversation comes as Esther Smith prepares for her Live Concert in Accra, scheduled for August 30, 2024, at the Perez Dome.

The event will feature a lineup of esteemed gospel artists celebrating her legacy and the impact of her work on her audience.

Free SHS Policy is Akufo-Addo’s most significant policy to date – Serwaa Amihere

Ghanaian media personality Serwaa Amihere recently praised the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, calling it President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s “most significant legacy.”

On August 29, 2024, Amihere took to X to share her views on the policy’s impact, noting that her role as the anchor of GHONE TV’s “Voters’ Connect” has allowed her to gauge strong public support for the initiative.

Amihere pointed out that her conversations with a diverse range of Ghanaians, including market vendors and commercial drivers, suggest that many are inclined to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections, largely due to the Free SHS program.

Despite acknowledging the policy’s implementation challenges, she emphasized its positive effects on many Ghanaian families.

Her comments sparked varied responses online.

Some praised the government for the initiative, while others highlighted the difficulties the policy has faced.

Launched in September 2017, the Free SHS program aims to eliminate financial barriers to secondary education in Ghana.

By covering all fees sanctioned by the Ghana Education Service (GES), including tuition and textbooks, the policy ensures that every student admitted to a public Senior High School through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) can receive a free education.

This approach is intended to ease the financial burden on families and broaden access to education across the country.

Ridge Condos All-Black Party: Straight from the pit of hell – Prophet Oduro reacts

Prophet Kofi Oduro, General Overseer of Alabaster Ministry International, has strongly condemned the recent Ridge Condos All-Black Party, which has stirred controversy on social media due to its provocative nature.

The event, marked by revealing outfits worn by female attendees and the presence of notable businessmen, has been met with significant criticism.

Prophet Oduro, who has been closely following the developments, expressed deep disapproval, labeling the event as “straight from the pit of hell.”

He likened Ghana to the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, warning that the country could face divine judgment if it continues on this path.

“Recently in Kumasi, there was an All-Black nightclub party. Women were virtually naked! Ghana, you’re Sodom and Gomorrah, until you repent, judgment is on your head. From the top to the down,” he fumed while delivering a sermon.

During a recent sermon, he also questioned the Ghana Police Service’s awareness of the event, noting that this was the second occurrence of such a party.

“I want to ask the Ghana police service whether they saw the All-Black party because this is the second time,” he asked.

Prophet Oduro further criticized the rise of strip clubs in Accra, expressing concern about the spread of promiscuity among both the young and old.

He pointed to the disturbing trend of prominent figures, including MPs and chiefs, engaging in inappropriate relationships with much younger women, whom he referred to as “girls fit to be their grandchildren.”

He described the situation as evidence of moral decay, comparing it to Babylon, and called for urgent repentance.

“Now we have nightclubs that host naked people. There are full-striper nightclubs in the city. The police can’t go there. They strip a woman naked on a stripper table. Babylon!

“If this nation is not Babylonia, you will not have prominent people like MPs, chiefs, and so on, chasing small girls. A girl that is fit to be a grandchild, and this girl is calling a grey-headed man baby. Babylon!,” he stated.

Ghana to produce, refine and sell crude oil – Petroleum Hub CEO

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Charles Owusu, has announced that Ghana is gearing up to not only produce but also refine and sell crude oil as part of a broader strategy to boost the country’s economy.

Speaking at a media engagement on August 29, Mr. Owusu highlighted that while Ghana has traditionally been involved in crude oil production, the country now aims to expand its capabilities.

“You know Ghana, we produce crude oil but we don’t refine so this is going to build the midstream. We have the midstream, upstream and downstream so this is going to answer the question within the midstream. Ghana would become a vertically integrated oil and gas country meaning we are able to explore and produce and we are able to refine and then we sell.”

Mr. Owusu also emphasized that this effort aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, positioning Ghana to become a key player in the export market.

“This feeds into our export strategy within the ECOWAS market and the broader continent. With the African Continental Free Trade Area, Ghana is poised to drive export-led growth by adding value to our resources.”

The Petroleum Hub Development Corporation is committed to adding value to Ghana’s resources and making the country’s market more export-driven, contributing to the overall objectives of AfCFTA, which include increasing socioeconomic development, reducing poverty, and enhancing Africa’s competitiveness in the global economy.

The AfCFTA, established in 2018, is the largest free trade area globally by the number of member states, with 43 parties and 11 signatories.

It aims to eliminate tariffs on most goods and services over a period of 5, 10, or 13 years, depending on the country’s level of development.

The agreement seeks to create a single, liberalized market, reduce barriers to capital and labor, develop regional infrastructure, and establish a continental customs union, all with the goal of making Africa a more competitive player in the global market.

NDC identifies names of 50,000 dead people in EC’s voter register

Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of the current voter register.

During a media interview on August 29, 2024, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah asserted that the NDC has discovered the names of 50,000 deceased individuals still present on the voter register.

He emphasized that the NDC is committed to exposing any irregularities within the voter register, urging due diligence to prevent any illicit activities.

“We have identified approximately 50,000 dead people in the voter register. We will thoroughly investigate and expose all irregularities in the register,” Dr. Otokunor stated.

In addition, he revealed that around 2,000 voter names have been transferred out of the constituency of the Minority Leader of Parliament, Hon. Ato Forson, with a similar number being transferred into the constituency.

“It was discovered in his constituency that about 2,000 people have been transferred out, and approximately 2,000 to 3,000 have been transferred in. Thanks to Hon. Ato Forson’s vigilance, he said, ‘Doc, I keep my records, so I have my previous transfers.’ Some of these previous transfers are reflected in the current ones.

“How can this be accepted in a democracy when we are just months away from an election? There are also cases where people’s polling stations have been changed. If the Electoral Commission had provided the register on time, we could have identified and exposed these changes. We requested the voter register in July, and we are only now receiving it, which is unacceptable,” Dr. Otokunor added.

This comes as the Electoral Commission (EC) released the provisional voter register as part of a one-week public exhibition starting from August 20 to 27, 2024. The purpose of this provisional register is to allow all aspiring candidates and political parties to scrutinize the register and, if necessary, challenge the eligibility of questionable voters.

At a press conference held at the EC headquarters, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, addressed concerns about the timing of the register’s release.

He clarified that, according to Regulation 22 of CI 31, as amended by CI 126, the commission is required to provide the provisional register to political parties within three months following the end of the registration period.

Dr. Asare explained that the limited registration concluded on May 29, 2024, with a mop-up registration wrapping up on August 3, 2024.

Meanwhile, the NDC has requested a meeting with EC to iron out the issues.

“You must earn at least 3 incomes to survive in Ghana. Everything is increasing, and there’s nothing we can do about it.

“Forget our leaders, their main objective is to lie and prey on our hopes. Find a way to survive!.”

She urged people to adapt and find ways to survive amidst rising costs and ineffective governance.

Ghana is underdeveloped because Ghanaians spend more time sleeping than working – Mr Beautiful

Clement Bonney, known in the film industry as Mr. Beautiful, recently commented on Ghana’s development challenges.

He suggested that the country’s underdevelopment is partly due to Ghanaians spending more time sleeping than working.

In an interview with Amansan Krakye, he noted, “Having spent time abroad, I observed that people there sleep less and work more. In Ghana, the opposite is true—people sleep more than they work. Additionally, abroad, the system is designed to keep people productive, whereas here, it seems people have more control over the system.”

Bonney also criticized the 24-hour economy concept promoted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), questioning how the country can advance when people’s sleeping hours exceed their working hours.

“In other countries, most activities and events happen in the evening or on holidays because people are busy working throughout the day,” he said. “We spend a lot of time in church and then wonder why we’re struggling economically. If we want to see progress, we need to balance our sleep and work hours better.”

We already have digitization, but I want to experience Mahama’s 24-hour economy — Ras Kuuku

Ghanaian musician Ras Kuuku recently weighed in on the debate between Vice President Bawumia’s digitalization efforts and former President John Dramani Mahama’s proposal for a 24-hour economy.

Speaking on Onua TV, Ras Kuuku expressed a strong interest in seeing Mahama’s 24-hour economy concept come to fruition, as it represents a new experience for him compared to the already ongoing digitalization process.

He noted that while digitalisation is well underway in Ghana, the 24-hour economy is a novel idea that he is eager to witness firsthand.

Ras Kuuku emphasized that his interest in the 24-hour economy is independent of political bias, stating,”For digitalisation, we have already been experiencing it. Ghana is gradually being digitized. But we haven’t seen the 24-hour economy before,” Ras Kuuku stated.

He added, “It is something I want to see, so I would like for him (Mahama) to come and implement it so I can witness it.”

As Ghana gears up for the general elections on December 7, 2024, the race will see former President John Dramani Mahama, running as the NDC flagbearer, facing off against Vice President Bawumia of the NPP, New Force Movement leader Nana Kwame Bediako, and Movement for Change leader Alan Kyerematen.

Only ‘broke’ men see polygamy as a waste of money – Mr. Beautiful

Ghanaian comedian and actor Clement Bonney, widely known as ‘Mr. Beautiful,’ recently shared his views on polygamy during an interview with Cape Coast’s Property FM.

The Kumawood actor asserted that polygamy isn’t inherently negative and suggested that only those who are financially struggling view it as a waste of resources.

According to Mr. Beautiful, wealthier individuals are more likely to see the appeal in having multiple wives, while those with limited financial means might dismiss the practice as foolish.

He remarked that the frustration some express towards polygamy often stems from financial hardship, implying that with wealth, one would appreciate the joys of having more than one spouse.

“In this world, if you don’t have money and people are talking about having multiple wives, you would see it as a nonsense issue.

“When you are broke or poor and they’re discussing people who have married about two or three wives you would get angry and say it’s stupid,” he stated.

He continued, “Because you don’t have money that’s why you are angry and raining all manner of insults but if you were rich you’d see that having multiple wives is so sweet.”

Ghanaian comedian and actor Clement Bonney, widely known as ‘Mr. Beautiful’, shared his thoughts on polygamy in an interview with Property FM in Cape Coast.

The Kumawood star argued that the perception of polygamy as a negative practice is often tied to financial status, suggesting that only those with limited means view it as a waste of money.

Mr. Beautiful emphasized that wealthier individuals tend to appreciate the benefits of having multiple wives, while those struggling financially might dismiss the idea as foolish or unnecessary.

He stated that, “If you don’t have money, discussions about polygamy may seem irrelevant or even anger you, but if you were wealthy, you’d understand how enjoyable it can be.”

  • “You were a stepping stone” – Ola Michael to Kwaku Manu over ex-wife’s marriage

“You were a stepping stone” – Ola Michael to Kwaku Manu over ex-wife’s marriage

Ola Michael, a media personality, has suggested that actor Kwaku Manu‘s divorce from Naa Okailey Nyarko might have stemmed from her desire for a partner with higher social status and refinement.

According to Michael, she had always aspired to be with a “white man” and viewed Kwaku Manu as a stepping stone in her life.

Michael recounted an incident where Kwaku Manu sponsored a birthday trip abroad for his wife, after which she never returned.

This, he claims, led to the deterioration of their relationship, which was further strained by the long distance until their marriage eventually failed.

Michael also mentioned that Kwaku Manu was deeply affected upon hearing about his ex-wife’s remarriage.

“What happened was that when Kwaku Manu’s wife was celebrating her birthday, he flew the entire family abroad, and she never came back. She saw Kwaku Manu as a means to an end; she wanted to marry a white man and never returned from the States. Their relationship deteriorated, the long-distance relationship worsened until the marriage failed,” Michael said during his show on Neat FM.

Reflecting on their marriage, Michael highlighted the differences in their social standing and education.

“When Kwaku Manu met his wife, she was learned and he wasn’t. He saw the lady could help him. She was even managing the schools he built,” he stated.

He noted that Kwaku Manu’s wife played a significant role in managing the schools he established, suggesting that she had a more refined background compared to the actor.

However, Kwaku Manu has denied being heartbroken and maintains that he and his ex-wife still have a healthy relationship.

    Background:

After divorcing Kwaku Manu over three years ago, Naa Okailey Nyarko recently remarried, this time to a White man.

Naa Okailey and Kwaku Manu’s divorce was publicly confirmed by the latter in a 2022 interview with Kobby Kyei.

While the actor did not disclose the reasons behind their separation, he noted that despite their efforts to maintain the marriage, they ultimately decided to part ways.

Manu also highlighted that there is no universal solution for a successful marriage, as each relationship is unique.

Ghana needs $5bn to end flooding menace – Hydrological Authority

Dr. John Kissi, the CEO of the Ghana Hydrological Authority, informed Parliament that an estimated $5 billion is required to effectively address Ghana’s persistent flooding issues.

He emphasized that without this substantial financial investment, many regions in the country will continue to suffer from devastating floods, which frequently result in significant property damage and loss of life.

While speaking to the Assurances Committee of Parliament on August 28, Dr. Kissi outlined that the proposed funds would be allocated towards comprehensive flood risk management strategies nationwide, aimed at reducing the impact of flooding and protecting vulnerable communities.

“The works that we have done looking at the flood risk challenges across the country, we estimate that we need about 5 billion dollars to address comprehensively the flood risk challenge that we have,” he said.

He also highlighted that despite receiving about 92 million cedis in 2023 under the national flood control program, the amount was inadequate to meet the country’s flood mitigation needs.

In related news, the Ministry of Works & Housing recently disclosed that only 2% of Accra’s flooding issues have been resolved, underscoring the need for a more substantial and sustained effort to combat the problem.

“I will advise the youth not to rush into marriage. It is a very delicate moment in one’s life, and one must be circumspect,” he added.

In a recent sermon that has gone viral, Pastor Otabil passionately argued that it is misguided to believe that one must be financially well-off before getting married.

He shared a personal anecdote, revealing that he wasn’t rich when he married his wife and that he even had to paint a bench white to use as furniture in their home.

Ghanaian comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, known as DKB, recently shared how his attempt to meet President Nana Akufo-Addo never materialized.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Cosmopolitan Mix, DKB expressed disappointment, attributing the failure to those supposed to facilitate the meeting.

Despite this setback, DKB proudly considers himself the only comedian to have performed before every President of Ghana.

He is now actively supporting John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, in the upcoming December 7, 2024 election.

“It was very pleasant and shocking to me when John Mahama repeated two of my jokes on stage. I couldn’t sleep till morning. He’s captured my heart and right now I’m a presidential comedian,” DKB told aKorfa.

At the launch of the NDC’s Youth Manifesto on August 12, 2024, held at the Bukom Boxing Arena, DKB was thrilled when Mahama repeated two of his jokes during his speech.

This gesture deeply impressed DKB, prompting him to pledge his support for Mahama’s campaign. He emphasized that while he does not harbor animosity towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he feels honored and motivated to help Mahama in his presidential bid.

“It was one huge endorsement in my whole career and I have been through a lot in this country so if a President is talking about your joke and how he loves your joke, the only thing you can also do is to help him become President and realise his dream. Promoting music in Ghana is more difficult now compared to the past – Flowking Stone

Ghanaian musician Flowking Stone, whose real name is Kwaku Nsia Boama, has highlighted the increased challenges of promoting music in Ghana today compared to the past.

In a recent interview on 3FM Drive with Giovani Caleb, Flowking Stone discussed how the dynamics of music promotion have shifted significantly over the years.

Previously, music producers handled the financial aspects of promotion, including paying for radio slots and DJs.

However, with the decline in CD sales due to the rise of the internet and the subsequent shift of producers into the booming Kumawood film industry, artists were left to promote their own music.

This change meant that artists had to shoulder all promotional costs themselves, a situation that has been particularly tough for those without substantial financial resources.

Flowking Stone noted that while record labels have emerged more recently, the situation hasn’t improved much.

He mentioned that the rise of digital platforms like Facebook and TikTok has only increased the costs, with additional expenses for ads and tips for DJs and media personnel.

Despite the opportunities that platforms like TikTok offer, they also come with high costs, making it challenging for artists without significant financial backing.

Currently, Flowking Stone is promoting his ‘Decision’ album, released last year in the UK, which features collaborations with King Paluta, Mr Drew, Morphty, and others.

Nightclubs run 24 hours – Mahama on 24-hour economy

Former President John Dramani Mahama has for the umpteenth time defended the National Democratic Congress’ 24-hour economy policy that seeks to revitalise the Ghanaian economy.

Speaking at the University of Education Winneba on August 24, Mahama emphasized the feasibility of his economic policy which the ruling party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, believes is not a novel policy as some sectors of the economy already run a 24-hour shift.

Ghanaian investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, has expressed pessimism about the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) proposal to create a conducive environment for a 24-hour economy.

Manasseh Azure says he does not buy into the idea since the policy cannot operate without an efficient economy. According to him, the current productivity level does not compel companies to go beyond the 8-hour shift to hire more individuals since there is less demand for their goods or services.

In response to these concerns, Mr Mahama pointed out that certain sectors in Ghana are viable to benefit from the 24-hour economy policy that will be voluntary, citing entertainment venues such as discotheques and nightclubs as examples.

Mahama encouraged his party supporters to disregard critics and back his policy as a means of revitalizing the economy.

A 24-hour economy refers to an economic system where businesses, services, and activities operate continuously throughout the day and night, without interruption.

In such an economy, various sectors, including retail, transportation, entertainment, hospitality, and public services, remain open and accessible around the clock, catering to the needs of consumers at any time.

Mahama has stressed that the 24-hour economy policy is a game-changer.

Kofi Ofori, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ablekuma North, has highlighted recent developments in his constituency, specifically the opening of a KFC outlet and the construction of new fuel filling stations, as markers of progress.

In an interview on Atinka TV’s “Ablekuma North in Focus” program on August 22, 2024, Ofori discussed how these projects align with his administration’s broader plan to improve infrastructure and attract investors.

Ofori emphasized that the arrival of a KFC and the new filling stations are clear indicators of the area’s advancement.

He pointed out that not every part of Accra features such amenities, making their presence in Ablekuma North particularly notable.

“We previously lacked these amenities,” Ofori stated.

“However, with our ongoing development efforts, investors have started to take an interest in our area. The construction of these facilities reflects our progress and the improvements in local infrastructure, such as the newly upgraded roads.”

He added that, in the past, the establishment of a filling station might not have been viable due to poor road conditions, but with recent upgrades, such investments have become feasible and are contributing to the constituency’s development.

Previously, while still in custody, Nana Yaa had missed a court session due to security concerns as a large, angry crowd had gathered outside the courthouse.

As the primary suspect in a high-profile murder case, she has faced severe public hostility, including verbal abuse, attempts to chase her, and physical attacks from the mob surrounding the courthouse.

    Background

Reports indicated that Wyllbee was killed in Abuakwa-Tanoso, Ashanti Region, while staying overnight at Nana Yaa Nyarko’s residence, a property reportedly owned by her ‘abroad-based’ husband’s family, who were unaware of Wyllbee’s presence.

According to initial accounts, on July 5, 2024, Wyllbee was seen urinating in the compound and was confronted by residents who suspected him of theft.

Wyllbee allegedly claimed he was visiting Nana Yaa, but she purportedly denied knowing him, to protect her marriage from her in-laws.

This denial led to suspicion and accusations of theft among the neighbors, culminating in Wyllbee being lynched. Reports also mention that Wyllbee’s phone was destroyed with a stone during the incident.

‘Year of Return’ initiative isn’t promoting Ghanaian music as expected – Bisa Kdei

Bisa Kdei, a prominent Ghanaian Highlife musician, has expressed frustration over the insufficient promotion of Highlife music in Ghana.

During an interview with Onua TV, he highlighted a concern that the ongoing Year of Return initiative isn’t being leveraged effectively, as local audiences seem to favor foreign genres like Amapiano and Afrobeats over traditional Highlife.

Kdei questioned the cultural message being conveyed to visitors, asking, “When people come to Ghana, what are we showcasing Highlife or Afrobeats?” He argued that the heavy rotation of foreign music in clubs is overshadowing Ghanaian sounds, thus diminishing the impact of Highlife.

He also pointed out that this lack of promotion is impacting the ability of Ghanaian artists to succeed internationally.

“When tourists and diasporans come and hear only Afrobeats, that’s what they take with them. We aren’t doing enough to promote our own culture, and that affects our international appeal,” Kdei noted.

Kdei recounted a specific incident where he challenged a DJ for exclusively playing Nigerian music at a club.

Despite these challenges, he remains dedicated to championing Highlife music, stating, “I’ve chosen Highlife as my career path, and I will continue to fight for it. Being vocal about these issues is crucial to me.”
