I didn’t buy GIMPA certificate, I worked hard to earn it – Stonebwoy

Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy has expressed frustration over allegations that his GIMPA (Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration) certificate was obtained through improper means.

In a recent interview with GTV’s Kafui Dey, Stonebwoy addressed the accusations, dismissing them as the result of a “daft mentality.”

He highlighted the stringent measures at GIMPA, including surveillance cameras in exam rooms, which make cheating virtually impossible.

“I want to address these naysayers because sometimes their noise drowns out the truth. There are cameras in the exam halls, which shows how difficult it is to cheat. You have to study; you can’t beat the system,” he said.

Stonebwoy emphasized that success at the institution requires genuine effort and study.

The musician also took aim at those perpetuating these claims, accusing them of undermining his achievements with negativity.

“Ahwenepa nkasa [‘quality beads’ don’t make much noise], but when we stay silent for too long, it allows foolishness to prevail. Claiming GIMPA gifted me the certificate, what poverty-stricken mentality is that? What kind of failure mentality is that?” he asked.

Stonebwoy further elaborated that he had to attend evening classes to accommodate his busy schedule.

“I had to attend evening classes because the morning option didn’t fit my schedule. It’s not easy, there are even cameras in the exam hall, let nobody lie to anyone,” he stated.

He reassured listeners that the rigorous examination environment, including surveillance, ensured the integrity of his academic accomplishments.

Keche Joshua, part of the Ghanaian music duo Keche, has publicly criticized fellow artist King Paluta for his lack of promotion of their collaborative track, “My Father,” which was released in June 2024.

The song has garnered around 42,000 views on YouTube, but according to Joshua, King Paluta has been neglectful in promoting it.

In a passionate video shared on X on August 23, 2024, Joshua accused King Paluta of disrespecting Keche by failing to promote the song, despite actively promoting other artists like Sista Afia, Eno Barony, Tulenkey, and Wendy Shay.

“We did a song with you and you never posted it. I reached out to your team and they said they don’t use his official account to post things. They use the King Paluta Army page rather,” Joshua stated.

Joshua revealed that when he reached out to King Paluta’s team, he was informed that they primarily use the King Paluta Army page for such activities, not the artist’s official account.

Joshua further claimed that after persistent requests, King Paluta only produced a promotional video which he neither shared nor retweeted.

He expressed his disappointment at the perceived disrespect towards Keche, emphasizing their established reputation in the industry.

Joshua criticized the attitude of artists with fewer hits, implying they often show disregard for more prominent acts.

“You got an artiste like Keche and you disrespect us? You made it seem like we were disturbing you so you just did something for us.

“Let nobody come and say there’s no love in the industry because these one-hit artistes are very disrespectful,” he concluded.

‘Rambo Style’ of tax collection from business owners is a thing of the past – GRA

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced significant changes in its approach to revenue collection, moving away from previous aggressive tactics.

In a recent briefing with the Parliamentary Press Corp in Accra, Deputy Commissioner Daniel Adisi emphasized that the GRA is now prioritizing engagement and education in its interactions with the business community.

He highlighted that effective taxation is a technical process that requires clear and continuous communication.

Adisi assured that the GRA is adopting a more customer-focused approach, aiming to work collaboratively with businesses to enhance understanding and compliance with tax regulations.

He stressed the crucial role of taxes in national development and encouraged businesses to recognize their importance.

Now GRA is customer centric. Please carry this message across and let’s grow together. Because without taxes we can’t grow our nation.

“We go out there to collect loans and other things, it is some country’s citizens that have paid their taxes, we also must endeavor to pay. GRA is ready to educate and use channels like this to reach out there for us to know the importance of the taxation we need to pay,” Daniel Adisi stated.

Ablakwa implicates Ofori-Atta, Georgina Wood, others in state land capture allegations

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has released a new list of government officials and politically exposed individuals allegedly acquiring state lands during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Among those named are former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, who are both said to have purchased land in the upscale AU Village/La Wireless area in Accra.

Ablakwa disclosed these details on Friday, August 23, 2024, via his social media, continuing his parliamentary efforts to expose alleged state capture.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Ablakwa shared documents he claims show the sale of public lands by President Akufo-Addo to his relatives, appointees, and other affiliates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The list also includes Akwasi Aboagye Atuah, Board Chair of SIC; Dr. Janet Ampadu Fofie, Chairperson of the Presidential Emoluments Committee; and Kwabena Mantey Jectey Nyarko, a board member of the Ghana Airport Company Limited.

These individuals are reported to have purchased land on various dates between October 2020 and December 2023.

  • Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers demand retraction and apology from Manasseh over claims in new book

Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers demand retraction and apology from Manasseh over claims in new book

Lawyers for Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, a well-known Ghanaian businessman and the brother of former President John Dramani Mahama, have issued a formal request for investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni to retract and apologize for claims made in his recent book, “The President Ghana Never Got.”

The book alleges that Mr. Mahama was a significant debtor to the former state-owned Merchant Bank, now known as Universal Merchant Bank (UMB).

In their rebuttal, Mr. Mahama’s legal team firmly denies these accusations, stating that he has never been personally indebted to either Merchant Bank or UMB.

They argue that the publication of these claims has damaged Mr. Mahama’s reputation, causing concern among his business associates, family, and friends.

The lawyers clarify that while Engineers & Planners Company Limited (E&P), a company linked to Mr. Mahama, did secure a loan from Merchant Bank, this loan was fully repaid in February 2014.

They stress that E&P is a distinct legal entity from Mr. Mahama and that he was not personally involved in securing or repaying the loan.

The legal team also highlights that despite the loan being fully repaid, UMB’s new management failed to update Credit Bureau Agencies and the Bank of Ghana about the settlement, leading to continued misinformation about the company’s financial standing. This oversight, they argue, has contributed to the false claims made in Awuni’s book.

In 2023, E&P filed a lawsuit against UMB Bank, seeking a declaration that the debt had been settled and that the bank’s contrary publications were inaccurate.

The bank admitted in its defense that the debt had indeed been paid and that it had instructed the Credit Bureau Agencies to correct their records.

Mr. Mahama’s lawyers have given Awuni a seven-day deadline to retract the statements and issue an unconditional apology. If Awuni fails to comply, they plan to take legal action.

The situation has stirred significant public interest, with many eagerly anticipating Awuni’s response.

The outcome could have far-reaching consequences, particularly in the ongoing debate surrounding the sale of Merchant Bank and the involvement of influential individuals in its financial difficulties.

This was later revised by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, who decided to integrate biometric systems, leading to a competitive tender that resulted in Michel Africa Parliament Services winning the contract.

Bagbin noted that the adjournment in July also allowed for attendance at an international parliamentary conference in the U.S.

During the 2024 Youth Week celebrations at the Assemblies of God Cedar Mountain Chapel in Accra, Nanahemaa Nana Adwoa Awindor, a well-known Ghanaian media personality and former host of ‘Greetings from Abroad,’ shared insightful advice on choosing a life partner.

She emphasized the value of humor in relationships, suggesting that a partner who can share laughter and joy with you is crucial.

“I would advise the young ones to marry somebody who can be your friend. Someone who would like to laugh with you, smile with you, cry with you, or joke with you. Very importantly, joke with you!” she emphasized.

Awindor explained that humor helps ease tension in a marriage, noting that in Ghanaian culture, joking about serious matters can diffuse stress and strengthen relationships.

“In Ghana, one thing that has helped us is that we joke about everything, including serious issues. And because we joke about these things, we soften the tension. That should be part of our lives as a family, as a couple,” she added.

She encouraged young people to seek partners who are supportive and willing to grow alongside them, highlighting the importance of mutual accommodation and shared enthusiasm.

“You should look out for somebody who can accommodate you, who is ready to come halfway to meet your needs, to meet your excitement, and who is ready to support you as you grow,” she said.

Money stops nonsense – DJ Slim tells Mensa Otabil over marriage comment

Ghanaian Disc Jockey Kwaku Slim has offered his take on Pastor Mensah Otabil‘s recent advice urging men to marry early, regardless of their financial situation.

Pastor Otabil, the founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), argued that men shouldn’t delay marriage for the sake of financial stability, sharing his personal experience of starting his marriage with minimal resources.

While DJ Slim acknowledges the wisdom in Pastor Otabil’s advice, he contends that money plays an essential role in today’s marriages.

He pointed out that modern wedding ceremonies often require substantial financial investment to meet contemporary expectations.

Slim highlighted that, unlike in the past, where simple living was more common, today’s marriages demand stronger financial support due to the high costs associated with modern life.

In a video shared on his X page on August 22, 2024, DJ Slim emphasized that although Pastor Otabil’s advice is well-intentioned, the realities of today’s world make financial preparedness crucial for the success of a marriage.

He noted that marriage, as an institution, often depends on the financial stability of the man, making it difficult to overlook the importance of money in maintaining a sustainable relationship.

Pastor Otabil’s comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing with his view on prioritizing marriage over financial stability, while others argue that the challenges of modern life make his advice less practical.

But his early life, shaped by his parents, laid the foundation for the man he would become.

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV for the documentary “The Uncle Ebo Whyte Story: A Legacy of Inspiration & Creativity,” Whyte shared reflections on his upbringing, shedding light on the significant influence his parents had on him. Despite his father’s struggles with alcoholism, Whyte cherishes fond memories of both his parents.

“I was his (my father’s) favourite child. I remember him as a bushman who still had the respect of the community.

“When he was under the influence of alcohol, he was never mocked by the community, and we, his children, were never mocked because of the dignity with which he carried himself,” he recalled.

Whyte recalled how, despite his father’s challenges, he was never ridiculed, and neither were his children.

“No matter how much he drank at night, the next morning he would go to work dressed impeccably. He was with the judicial service, and he never missed a day’s work. I don’t know how he did that,” he said.

The community respected his father, a man who, despite his late-night drinking, never missed a day of work at the judicial service and always presented himself impeccably.

Whyte also spoke highly of his mother, describing her as a resourceful and entrepreneurial woman.

After the death of Whyte’s father when he was just 14, his mother took on the responsibility of raising five boys on her own.

“My mother raised us all herself, through her hard work, her resourcefulness, and her firmness,” he recalled.

Ladies should marry after 35 and men 40, but you can have a child before marriage – McBrown

Ghanaian actress and media personality Nana Ama McBrown recently shared her perspective on marriage, advising women to consider tying the knot after the age of 35 for their own well-being.

She believes that waiting until this age allows women to better prepare themselves emotionally and physically, making them more resilient in handling the complexities of marriage.

McBrown also shared her view that if she were a man, she would wait until after 40 to marry, aiming for a more stable and enduring relationship.

In addition, McBrown stressed the importance of parents teaching Biblical principles to their children to prevent premature parenthood.

She noted, “If I were a child again, I would seriously think about marriage. As a woman, I would wait until after 35; as a man, I would consider waiting until after 40. I’ve been lucky to have had respectful partners, but I understand that this might not be the case for everyone. Having a child with someone is acceptable even if marriage doesn’t follow. The Bible acknowledges human imperfection and the need for forgiveness, so it’s crucial to educate children with Biblical values to guide their decisions.”

You don’t want to marry, but you’re sleeping together. You want what’s reserved for marriage without going through the process. Be bold and marry.”

However, Counselor George Lutterodt, speaking on Class 91.3FM’s Class Morning Show, countered this perspective. He argued that a man should be financially secure before entering marriage, stating, “No woman should allow a poor man to marry her. A man who cannot feed himself three times a day or provide adequate shelter is not ready for marriage.” Lutterodt insisted that financial stability is crucial for a man to qualify for marriage.

Counselor Charlotte Oduro also contributed to the discussion on the same show, acknowledging the importance of financial stability.

She emphasized that a man should have a certain level of financial comfort to ensure the well-being of his partner, advising, “At least if you want to marry someone’s daughter, ensure you’re in a comfortable position and capable of taking responsibility, as marriage comes with many demands.”

This debate highlights the ongoing conversation about balancing love and financial readiness in relationships.

Don’t marry if you’re poor – Counselor Lutterodt opposes Otabil’s advice

A recent debate has emerged among marriage experts regarding the role of financial stability in the decision to marry.

Pastor Mensa Otabil, founder of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has sparked discussion with his sermon suggesting that accumulating wealth before marriage is unnecessary.

He shared his own experience of starting his marriage with limited resources and advised against delaying marriage for financial reasons.

“If you’re waiting to be wealthy before you marry, you’re not thinking clearly,” Otabil asserted in a viral sermon clip. “You desire the benefits of marriage without the commitment, and that’s not right. Take the plunge and get married.”

In contrast, Counselor George Lutterodt voiced strong opposition on Class 91.3FM’s Morning Show.

He argued that a man should not marry if he is financially unstable. “A man who cannot sustain himself financially or provide a suitable home is not ready for marriage,” Lutterodt declared. “Financial readiness is crucial for marriage.”

Counselor Charlotte Oduro also contributed to the discussion, noting the importance of financial stability for a comfortable marriage.

“A man should be financially secure to ensure a stable and comfortable life for his partner. It’s essential to be prepared for the responsibilities that marriage entails,” she advised.

This exchange highlights the ongoing debate over whether financial security should be a prerequisite for marriage or if love and commitment can outweigh monetary concerns.

Gospel artist Obaapa Christy recently discussed her past relationship with her ex-husband, Pastor Love, in a widely circulated interview.

She credited him with significantly advancing her career, noting that while neither of them could write songs independently, they collaborated closely to develop and refine their music.

“I would say he played a major role in my career. Like me, he can’t write songs, but he would bring ideas, and together we fine-tuned them to produce the songs we created,” she said.

Obaapa Christy also addressed the nature of her current relationship with Pastor Love, acknowledging that despite not having seen him recently, they maintain a respectful and cordial connection due to their shared responsibilities as parents.

She emphasized that their past and the presence of their children ensure they will continue to be a part of each other’s lives.

“I’ve not seen him for a while, but you can ask him, Everywhere I see him, I greet him. There is no bad blood between us. I have children with him and so we will be in each other’s life. There is a lot that happens in life. People have died because of marriage so…” she said.

Don’t dress in Muslim attire for campaign purposes only – Vim Lady to Samira Bawumia

Prominent media figure Afia Pokua, also known as Vim Lady, has urged Second Lady Samira Bawumia to maintain consistency in her Muslim attire.

Vim Lady observed that Samira donned a hijab during the 2012 and 2016 election campaigns to emphasize her Muslim identity.

However, post-election, Samira was frequently seen without the hijab, which has led to questions about her genuine religious affiliation.

Vim Lady cautioned that this inconsistency could negatively affect Vice President Bawumia’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 elections.

She highlighted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is leveraging this issue as part of their campaign strategy.

“If you choose to project a liberal Islamic image, that’s one thing, but it’s crucial to be consistent with your attire, especially now that your husband is the flagbearer. The NDC is focusing on this point, and it’s not just propaganda; it reflects a real concern,” she said in a Twi video shared by One Ghana TV on YouTube.

This comes amid claims from some NDC members that Samira’s fluctuating use of Muslim attire suggests a possible attempt to downplay her Islamic identity or align more with Christian norms.

James Gardiner has expressed that he doesn’t mind losing followers or fans due to his political views.

He stated that he won’t be pressured into supporting causes he doesn’t believe in just to maintain his fan base.

Gardiner also mentioned that he might openly endorse a political party in the future, without worrying about how others perceive him for it.

“If someone stops being a fan because I don’t share their views, that’s fine. It just means they weren’t meant to be my fan anyway. Everyone is entitled to their own choices, and I can’t satisfy everyone. When the time comes, my stance will be clear,” Gardiner remarked in a report by myjoyonline.com.

The actor emphasized that while his celebrity status might influence some people, those who vote should make independent decisions.

“I might influence others with my choices, but I’m not forcing anyone to vote a certain way. If you’re voting, you should be mature enough to decide for yourself.”

He added, “My choices are my own. If I decide to publicly support a political party, that’s entirely up to me.”

Ghana requires $300m annually to achieve its HIV/AIDS elimination target by 2030 – AIDS Commission

The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, has stated that Ghana requires $300 million annually to achieve its HIV/AIDS elimination target by 2030.

He emphasized that donor funding is unlikely to increase due to the government’s inadequate contribution to the program.

To change this, Dr. Atuahene highlighted the need for the government to significantly boost its contribution to the funding.

He stressed that without this increase, it would take over 50 years to achieve the set targets.

“The analysis clearly shows that from now until 2030, donor funding is unlikely to rise. This points to the need for the government to significantly increase its contribution to the program. We will require almost $300 million annually for the AIDS program to achieve its target. Otherwise, if the current situation persists, it will take us more than 50 years to reach those targets,” Dr. Atuahene stated in an engagement with the media on August 22, 2024.

Additionally, the UNAIDS Country Director, Hector Sucilla Perez, encouraged the government to mobilize domestic resources to fund the program.

“We need to reflect on the fact that Ghana still heavily depends on donor support. While we are happy to partner in changing this narrative, we appeal to all multisectoral partners to continue exploring innovative ways to mobilize sustainable domestic funding resources,” he suggested.

The Commission expended over $126 million in 2022, representing a 1% decrease of $127million in the previous year 2021.
Donor funds accounted for 43% of this figure with government providing the remaining $51million.
The Private sector also donated $20million.

Treatment, care, and support accounted for the largest share of the expenditure while development and research received the least of funds.

The National AIDS Spending Assessment (NASA), is a comprehensive and systematic resource tracking method that describes the financial flow, actual disbursement and expenditures for HIV/AIDS in Ghana.

As of 2023, Ghana has 334,095 people living with HIV/AIDS. The figure includes 17,550 children under the age of 15.

Highlife artist Nana Kwaku Okyere Duah, popularly known as Tic, has voiced his anger over the misuse of public funds by government officials.

He highlighted a shift in perception within African society, where it was once believed that thieves were mostly the uneducated and unemployed.

However, he argues that this is no longer the case.

Tic emphasized that today, it is often well-educated individuals in government roles who are manipulating budgets and forging documents to siphon public funds, which in turn devastates the nation.

Thieves, corrupt politicians in fine clothing – Kumchacha on $3m African Games saga

Nicholas Osei, known as Kumchacha, the founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministries, has strongly criticized the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its handling of $3 million related to the 13th All African Games in Ghana.

He condemned the ministry’s lack of transparency and accountability, labeling the officials involved as “thieves.”

Kumchacha voiced his frustration over the ministry’s inability to justify the expenditure, especially the $3 million reportedly allocated for broadcasting.

He called for divine intervention to combat corruption, linking the mismanagement of state funds to issues like youth suffering, poor road conditions, and inadequate street lighting.

In a video posted by Trends GH TV, Kumchacha, speaking in Twi, questioned how such a large sum could be spent on broadcasting without clear explanations.

He emphasized that religious leaders should not shy away from addressing corruption, despite criticism that they should focus solely on spiritual matters.

“How can the sports ministry spend over $3 million on broadcasting issues, and we are struggling to find out how it was spent? It is high time God deals with such corrupt people.

“Our leaders always look fresh and nice, yet they are criminals and thieves causing us pain through corruption. When a pastor talks about corruption, some people say focus on the Bible, but we need to speak out about the rot.”

This controversy erupted when the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, claimed before the Public Accounts Committee that $3 million had been paid to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

However, GBC’s Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan, contradicted this, stating the broadcaster received only $105,000.

In response, the ministry issued a statement on August 21, 2024, clarifying that the broadcast rights deal with GBC was worth $3.6 million.

They asserted that $2.5 million was paid to GBC in two installments, with an additional $1 million directed to a third party at GBC’s request.

    Background:

The controversy began when the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, claimed that his ministry paid over $3 million to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) during his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee.

However, Professor Amin Alhassan, Director-General of GBC, denied receiving this amount, stating that the state broadcaster only earned $105,000 from the African Games.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports released a statement on August 21, 2024, detailing the African Games broadcast rights deal with GBC, which amounted to $3.6 million.

According to the ministry, $2.5 million was paid to GBC in two installments, and $1 million was paid to a third party upon GBC’s instructions.

“From the total amount, $2.5 million was paid directly to GBC in two tranches: $1 million and $1.5 million on March 13, 2024, and May 22, 2024, respectively.

Another amount of $1 million was paid to third parties upon the instructions of GBC, in accordance with the contract,” the statement explained.

Floodgates of violence will open if peace pact is not signed – Exec. Director, IDEG

Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Emmanuel Akwetey has underscored the critical importance of all political parties signing a peace pact as the country approaches the 2024 elections.

The discussion around the peace pact has intensified due to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s reluctance to endorse it.

The NDC cited several reasons for their stance, including the need for the implementation of previous election recommendations, the prosecution of those involved in election-related violence and fraud, a public commitment from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to respect the election results, clarification on the status of missing Electoral Commission equipment, and securing signatures from top officials on the peace agreement.

The NDC argued that these measures are essential for ensuring a fair and peaceful electoral process.

In a media engagement on August 22, Akwetey acknowledged the validity of NDC’s concerns but stressed that the failure to address these issues before the 2024 elections could have detrimental consequences for the country.

He emphasized the urgency for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to address these concerns promptly, even if it means seeking resolution through the courts.

“The peace pact is crucial for a peaceful and stable election period. While the NDC has raised valid points, it is imperative that the NPP addresses these issues swiftly. Whether through legal means or other avenues, it is vital to resolve these matters to prevent the floodgates of violence from opening,” Akwetey stated.

He also noted that while the NPP might have valid points regarding past elections when the NDC was in power, it is essential to focus on resolving the current issues at hand.

Akwetey’s call to action highlights the need for a collaborative effort to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process in the upcoming elections.

Ghanaian actress Christiana Awuni has publicly criticized Portia Asare for blaming the decline of the Kumawood film industry on spiritual sabotage or ‘juju.’

Awuni contends that while personal disputes might sometimes involve such practices, they are not a major factor in the industry’s downturn.

Awuni is concerned that Portia’s statements could further harm Kumawood’s fragile reputation, potentially alienating audiences and worsening the industry’s struggles.

In a video shared on Instagram by MariGyata, Awuni, speaking in Twi, suggested that Portia’s tendency to keep to herself might have shaped her views.

“Portia prefers to stay away from others, so I’m unsure what has led her to make such claims. Her attitude seems to contribute to the very issues she’s talking about,” Awuni said.

She contrasted Portia’s behavior with other actresses like Nana Ama McBrown and Vivian Jill, who she described as more approachable and supportive.

Awuni warned that spreading such negative sentiments could have serious repercussions for Kumawood’s future.

My past bad actions won’t affect my daughter – Medikal

During a recent appearance on the Rants, Bants, and Confessions podcast, rapper Medikal opened up about his thoughts on how his actions might impact his daughter in the future.

When asked about his concerns regarding his daughter potentially stumbling upon his past behavior and feeling embarrassed, Medikal stated that while he would never intentionally put his child in harm’s way, it’s inevitable that she will one day become aware of his past actions.

“I’m good, Island is good and obviously I am a very sane person. I know what I am doing and I am controlling myself. I won’t do anything that will endanger my child. Or even put her mother in a bad situation.”

The discussion comes in the aftermath of his divorce from actress Fella Makafui, during which Medikal made some derogatory comments that sparked widespread controversy on social media.

More recently, rumors have surfaced linking him to singer Eazzy, with some suggesting this relationship may have contributed to his breakup with Fella.

During the podcast, Efia Odo questioned Medikal on whether he’s mindful of the impact his actions might have on his daughter as she grows older, especially given that his words and deeds could affect her perception of him.

She pointed out that being a parent requires a different level of consideration and asked how he’s adjusting his behavior now that his daughter, Island, is involved.

Medikal responded confidently, assuring that both he and Island are doing well. He emphasized that he is a responsible and rational person, and he is mindful of his actions to ensure they don’t harm his daughter or put her mother in a difficult position.

“I’m good, Island is good and obviously I am a very sane person. I know what I am doing and I am controlling myself. I won’t do anything that will endanger my child. Or even put her mother in a bad situation.”

However, Efia Odo pressed further, expressing concern that Island might one day come across things Medikal has said about her mother, which could be troubling for her.

Medikal dismissed these concerns, remarking that it’s normal for children to learn about their parents’ pasts, comparing it to the children of adult film stars.

“It’s normal, even pornstars have kids. It’s nothing.”

He also briefly touched on how he and Fella Makafui are managing co-parenting, explaining that their daughter spends time with both of them, ensuring that her needs are met despite the separation.

Cabinet approves policy to cater for children with exceptional abilities

Ghana‘s Cabinet has approved the launch of a Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programme, aimed at providing advanced and tailored education for children with exceptional abilities.

The GATE initiative is designed to support learners who demonstrate extraordinary potential in areas such as high intelligence, creative thinking, the arts, leadership, athletics, and mechanical skills, requiring specialized educational provisions to nurture their talents.

Despite the importance of GATE in global education systems, it has not yet been introduced in Ghana, either in public or private sectors.

The country’s current Education Strategic Plan (2018-2030) also overlooks GATE as a critical strategy for fostering socio-economic transformation, potentially sidelining high-ability children who could become future innovators and leaders.

Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who proposed the GATE programme, emphasized the necessity of challenging gifted children beyond the standard curriculum to fully develop their capabilities.

He argued that by doing so, Ghana could accelerate its economic development and reduce inequality, following the successful examples of other countries that implemented similar programmes in the 1960s and 1970s.

The GATE programme will begin with the introduction of career pathways and new course offerings in both Sciences and Arts, starting at the junior high school level and continuing through senior high school.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service, with their special education expertise, will be responsible for the implementation of GATE.

To ensure efficiency and avoid confusion, the proposal recommends supporting GES and TVET in administering the programme rather than creating a separate agency.

This approach will also ensure effective use of public funds. GATE initiatives will be especially beneficial to disadvantaged communities, including those in rural and Zongo areas, by addressing opportunity gaps through targeted identification, assessment, and programming.

Initially, the programme will establish new schools at the junior and senior high school levels exclusively for GATE students.
Later, qualified students will be integrated into GATE programmes within their current schools, ensuring that all participants receive the same enriching experiences.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) will be responsible for developing the GATE curriculum, setting guidelines for student selection, and ensuring opportunities for underrepresented groups, as well as for the training and selection of GATE teachers.

Stop defaming Kumawood industry with your juju claims – Christiana Awuni tells Portia Asare

Ghanaian actress Christiana Awuni has publicly criticized her colleague Portia Asare for attributing the decline of the Kumawood movie industry to spiritual sabotage, or ‘juju.’

Awuni argued that while personal conflicts might involve such practices, they are not significant enough to explain the industry’s downturn.

Awuni expressed concern that Portia’s claims could further damage Kumawood’s already fragile reputation, potentially driving audiences away and exacerbating the industry’s struggles.

In a video shared on Instagram by MariGyata, Awuni, speaking in Twi, suggested that Portia’s tendency to distance herself from others may have influenced her perspective.

“Portia doesn’t like associating with people, so I don’t know what she has seen that influenced her to make that comment.

She is the one who wants to collapse the business with the minor state that we are now managing.

“No matter what, someone will hate you, so if you dislike people, what do you want them to do to you? Even when you greet her, the way she responds is different, unlike McBrown, Vivian Jill, and others who are lovely.”

She added that by making such statements, Portia risks harming the very industry they are trying to sustain.

Awuni contrasted Portia’s behavior with other actresses like Nana Ama McBrown and Vivian Jill, who she described as more approachable and warm.

She cautioned that publicizing such negative opinions could have dire consequences for Kumawood’s future.

“People are asking why Kumawood is dead. It is because of hatred! People are using spiritual means to sabotage their colleagues instead of loving and supporting each other,” Portia said.

Portia Asare’s comments, made during an interview with Ahodwo TV, pointed to internal conflicts and spiritual sabotage as key factors in Kumawood’s decline.

She argued that jealousy and a lack of unity among industry members have damaged the quality and production of Kumawood films.

Her remarks, however, have sparked criticism from other Kumawood actors and actresses, who disagree with her assessment.

Guru fights disqualification from UGSRC election

Ghanaian musician Maradona Yeboah Adjei, known as Guru, is challenging his disqualification from the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections through legal action.

The UGSRC Electoral Commission disqualified him on August 16, 2024, due to his non-residency status, citing it as a violation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24), which mandates that a candidate’s entire ticket is void if one member is ineligible.

In response, Guru has petitioned the UGSRC Judicial Board, seeking an interim injunction to postpone the elections set for August 26, 2024.

His petition questions the fairness and constitutionality of barring non-resident students from contesting SRC elections, emphasizing that SRC decisions impact all students.

“TAKE NOTICE that Council for and on behalf of the Plaintiff /Applicant herein praying for an order for interim injunction to restrain the Defendant/Respondent, their agents, servants, and any persons whatsoever authorized by them from going ahead to proceed with the election pending the final determination of this suit,” part of his petition said.

Guru argues that the Electoral Commission’s decision overstepped its authority, as the Judicial Board is responsible for interpreting constitutional provisions.

He is asking the Judicial Board to declare him eligible to run for UGSRC President and to halt the elections until his case is resolved.

  • Resolving dispute between Asanko Gold and Tontokrom residents a priority – Dep Lands Minister

Resolving dispute between Asanko Gold and Tontokrom residents a priority – Dep Lands Minister

Hon. George Mireku Duker, the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources responsible for Mines, has re-echoed government’s commitment to resolving the dispute between the chiefs and people of Tontokrom in the Amansie South District and Asanko Gold Ghana.

He stated that it will be one of the legacies of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government in the mining sector.

The stand-off between the community and the company over the exploitation of gold resources in the area is well documented, with one person losing his life this year following clashes between irate youth of the community and security personnel on duty at the company.

Following a series of meetings held at the Ministry, Hon. Mireku Duker, on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, embarked on a working visit to the area to have face-to-face interactions with the company and community leaders as part of efforts to bring finality to the protracted matter impeding the success of the company and development in the township.

Hon. Duker first made a stop ovver at the office of Asanko Gold Ghana Company, where he acquainted himself with the issues from the company’s perspective and proposed some steps the company must take to improve their relationship with the community.

The Deputy Minister re-emphasized the need for a harmonious relationship between the company and the community, stating that unity is the principal ingredient for mutual success for both the company and the community.

Responding to a request by the company for an immediate resolution of the deadlock, He stated that the government, through the Ministry, has been engaging the community to allow the company to operate without conflict and will continue to activate the necessary dialogue and security measures to bring finality to the matter.

He stated that while the community has a responsibility to allow the company to operate in a violence-free environment conducive to their success, it is also imperative that the company is transparent, engaging, and accountable to the communities.

He appealed to the company to take steps to build trust with the community by being open and accountable to them and executing life-changing CSR projects in the area.

“It’s very critical and important for companies and the communities around these mining companies to co-exist because you cannot, in any way, operate in isolation. It is, therefore, very important to wear kid gloves to have a win-win situation. Just recently, as the VP of Asanko alluded to, Goldfields built a $60 million stadium for the people of Tarkwa because of the cordial relationship between them and the community”.

They’ve also constructed about a 30-kilometer stretch of road for their mine. In terms of corporate social responsibilities, I will say they are doing their best. How do they do this? And how have they been able to sit with the people? I think we should synergize and learn from each other, irrespective of what we have, in terms of strategy in dealing with communities.

“So once the media is here, I will also use their medium to appeal to the communities to find a way of peacefully sitting down with the various mining companies. There must be that understanding that you are not just here to take our gold away as they perceive you.

“So it’s not a matter of just mining and taking the gold as being speculated out there. The perception is that the companies just take the gold and leave, and that is not true. They pay their royalties. All the tax components are paid. And we also commit them to do corporate social responsibilities. And if we give them that peace of mind, they will be able to do these projects to support their communities,” he said.

Dr. Charles Amoah, Executive Vice President of Asanko Gold Ghana, commended the Deputy Minister for the assurance and indicated the willingness of the company to dialogue with the community elders to settle the matter.

He also thanked him for promising to work on the company’s request to have the Bank of Ghana grant them special dispensation for the importation of some equipment that will aid their operations.

Hon. Duker later visited Tontokrom where he engaged the chiefs and elders at a durbar in the town.

He stated that the Ministry will give strong consideration to the request for a Community Mining Scheme by the residents.
