The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has underscored the importance of a prospective presidential candidate within the party, Kennedy Agyapong.
Addressing the media, Chairman Wontumi emphasized that Kennedy Agyapong’s role within the party is crucial, highlighting his significant value as an asset.
Wontumi believes that the party would experience a substantial setback if they are to lose Mr Agyapong, as his presence serves as a protective shield for the party’s interests.
Additionally, he disclosed that he and Kennedy regularly exchange ideas and provide each other with advice, referring to their relationship as that of brothers.
“Kennedy Agyapong and myself are the popular people, you can like it or not. I told Kennedy he will be second, I spoke to him today. He is my senior brother. Kennedy should have looked for running mates. Kennedy is an asset, I am telling you I mentioned his name before me,” he added.
He made these remarks after the just ended Super Delegates Conference of the party.
The party on Saturday, August, 26, 2023 delegates from the NPP gathered to cast their votes.
The purpose was to narrow down the field of ten presidential aspirants to a final selection of five candidates.
After the votes, the official results revealed a significant victory for vice president, Dr. Bawumia, positioning him favorably ahead of the main primary scheduled for November.
Dr. Bawumia secured a resounding win by amassing 629 votes, securing the top position.
In the same vein, Kennedy Agyapong secured the second position with a total of 132 votes, while Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen acquired 95 votes, placing him third.
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto followed with 36 votes, securing the fourth position.
Both Mr. Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai Nimoh shared the fifth spot with nine votes each.
The remaining results were as follows: Kwabena Agyei Agyepong secured six votes, Joe Ghartey gained four votes, Kwadwo Poku received three votes, and Kofi Konadu Apraku obtained zero votes.
The party is expected to its flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general elections on November 4, 2023.
A video of Kennedy Agyapong, a member of parliament and an aspirant for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sparked mixed reactions on social media.
In the video, Mr Agyapong was seen venting his anger while mentioning President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamamudu Bawumia’s names, for allegedly sacking his polling agent during the party’s primary election in the Central Region.
Agyapong’s harsh words have ignited a debate among netizens about his suitability to run for president in 2024. Some have expressed doubt about his presidential qualities, while others have praised his honesty and popularity.
Those who doubt Agyapong’s presidential credentials have pointed out his tendency to be outspoken and controversial, which they think might not fit the diplomatic role of a president. They wonder whether he can exercise the necessary restraint and respect that a leader should have.
One Twitter user, @__Sharyf, summed up this view in a tweet: “You can say what you want but Kennedy Agyapong is not presidential material.”
On the other hand, those who support Agyapong’s presidential ambition have highlighted his candidness and connection with the masses. They believe that Agyapong’s frankness and courage have earned him the admiration of many Ghanaians who see him as a champion of their interests.
This group suggests that a break from the conventional political culture might be beneficial for the country to bring new ideas and solutions.
I foresee Kennedy Agyapong running as an independent candidate if he doesn't win. 😊🤔 pic.twitter.com/vthzALqm1h
They also argue that Agyapong could run as an independent candidate and win the presidency with his grassroots appeal.
Why Kennedy Agyapong is never a presidential material:
▪️instigated the public against Ahmed Suale which had him killed ▪️threatened to burn down the home of a former president ▪️threaten judges, lawyers, journalists and promised to harm them ▪️should be behind bars by now… pic.twitter.com/gT43MZmW4v
As the conversation goes on, netizens are divided over whether Agyapong’s blunt style and popular base could make him the next president, potentially changing the political landscape of the country.

One of the contenders in the New Patriotic Party’s presidential race, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed the unwavering optimism of amassing the highest number of votes in the ongoing Special Delegates Conference, especially in the Central Region.
Speaking in an interview after casting his vote, he noted that he anticipates the Central Region will give him 80% of votes.
“Central Region is a disciplined region. I don’t expect anything bad to happen to embarrass us and I’m not going to create any confusion here to make sure we are one party.
“I know I’m going to get massive votes from the Central Region. I’m expecting at least 80% of votes in the Central Region. No doubt about it. The Central Region is going to honour me for the hard work and commitment to the region,” he noted.
A total of 956 delegates are set to exercise their franchise in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP),Super Delegates Conference.
Today’s polls form part of the party’s preparations towards its primaries scheduled for November 4, this year.
The exercise is aimed at trimming the number of candidates who aspire to become flagbearers from ten to five.
In spite of the outcome of the elections, Mr Agyapong has pledged to support any candidates who emerges as the winner of the ultimate elections scheduled for November 4.
“We are here to vote and anyone who wins, you know, we all will come together and face the NDC,” he added.
He further commended the leadership of the party and the election committee for the meticulous preparations ahead of the elections.
“So far so good, especially the election committee and the [leadership at the national level]. They have done marvelous, I must admit,” he said.

A group known as “The Grassroots Movement” has announced its endorsement of the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a contender for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position, Kennedy Agyapong.
Representing supporters from diverse political backgrounds, “The Grassroots Movement” gathered in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, on August 22, 2023, to convey their stance through the media.
Their unified message underscored the pressing need for a leader in Ghana who embodies essential qualities such as pragmatism, patriotism, honesty, and discipline. This amalgam of attributes was succinctly referred to as “P. P. H. D” leadership traits.
Kennedy Agyapong has consistently advocated for discipline, urging Ghanaians to reject indiscipline in favor of authentic patriotism and unwavering honesty.
Comprising individuals from various walks of life including market women, hawkers, business leaders, masons, and members of different segments of society, “The Grassroots Movement” unveiled their rallying cry, encapsulated in the phrase “No Ken, No Vote 2024.”
An unnamed leader of the group told the press: “There is no discipline in Ghana, so the reason why I believe we need Kennedy Agyapong is that he is disciplined, and he speaks the truth also.
“For me also, I believe in Kennedy Agyapong because he is not afraid of anything, he is bold in his decisions.
“There is nothing going on in Ghana, so I decided not to vote again but as I realized Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for the presidency, I have changed my mind to support him because he even criticizes his own party people.”
Kennedy Agyapong is set to compete for the flagbearer position alongside nine other aspirants, with prominent figures like former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is planning to reduce the pool of 10 candidates who have successfully passed the vetting process down to five through an initial vote scheduled for August. Following this preliminary selection, the main contest is slated for November 2023. This contest will determine the successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the leader of the party.
A candidate aspiring to be the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has emphasized his commitment to curbing misconduct among government appointees if he secures the presidency in Ghana.
Aiming to set a precedent, Agyapong stated that any minister of state failing to adhere to punctuality norms would not only be dismissed but also publicly shamed to deter similar behavior by other officials.
In an interview on August 22, 2023, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central stressed that he would not entertain apologies from politicians, royalty, or even his own family, underlining the importance of accountability.
Agyapong’s stance also extends to scrutinizing government contracts meticulously during his potential tenure as president.
He cited a need for fairness and transparency, vowing to challenge the current trend of exorbitant profits, asserting that profit margins of 300% would not be tolerated in his administration.
Highlighting his dual roles as a politician and businessman, Agyapong expressed his commitment to prioritizing the interests of Ghana over other considerations, promising a thorough review of contracts that have gained approval under both NDC and NPP leaderships.
In this way, Agyapong aims to usher in an era of disciplined governance and responsible contract management, should he assume the presidency.
“I have said on several occasions that during my tenure as president, if you flout a rule and you are punished, I won’t heed any apology from any politician, king, or even my family, I won’t listen. It is by doing this that people will be deterred, and do the right thing. If a minister reports to duty late, I will sack the person and embarrass him in public by announcing that the minister has been fired due to lateness and ask the deputy minister of that ministry to take over,” he said.
“In business, if you are able to make a profit after taxes between 15-30%, you will survive in business. But in Ghana, an individual can make a profit of 300%, under my leadership as president, it will not work. We are going to scrutinize [contracts]. Ghanaians are fortunate that Kennedy Agyapong is a politician and a businessman, so I will check contracts very well. Under the leadership of both NDC and NPP, I am surprised why lawyers and government officials approve certain contracts. So I am aware of the challenges [facing Ghanaians], when I come into power, I will prioritize Ghana over everything,” he added.
A potential flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced his intention to raise the betting tax to 30% if elected president.
He explained that this is to dissuade young people from straying off course.
In an interview with the media, he expressed concerns about the adverse effects of excessive betting on the youth.
He contended that the prevalence of betting among young individuals could hamper their future prospects and lead them astray.
“I was being interviewed one time by a journalist and he brought in the topic of betting. He argued that the NPP has imposed a tax on betting. I told him that I will even increase it from 10% to 30%.
“I have refrained myself from talking about it because there isn’t much of employment. But if we had created employment, it would reduce the number of people who engage in betting. If a youth gets addicted to betting, he doesn’t have a future. So, when I come, we will create enough employment for the youth,” he said.
Kennedy Agyapong clarified that he has refrained from discussing this matter extensively due to the existing lack of employment opportunities.
However, he stressed that generating more job openings could significantly reduce the number of youths resorting to betting as a source of income.
He provided an example from the United States, where a considerable tax is levied on substantial betting winnings. This, he argued, was an effort to deter individuals from depending on unearned money.
“Let me give you this example in the US if you with a bet of about $ 1 billion, you will go home with only $ 600 million, about 40% tax. Because it is free money.
“So, with all the advice I gave to the youth, they took only that part to tell people that I said I will increase tax on bet. Yes! I said it and I stand by it. I will do this it discourages the youth from going astray,” he added.
He continued that “I don’t care, if you will vote for me go ahead if you won’t vote for me too that is fine. But whatever that is the truth is what I will say it.”
The Member of Parliament representing Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has refuted allegations suggesting that he destroyed billboards and artworks belonging to a prospective leader within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong.
These allegations arose from supporters of Kennedy Agyapong, who asserted that Annoh-Dompreh played a role in damaging campaign materials within his own electoral region, as the party’s special delegates congress loomed on the horizon.
However, Annoh-Dompreh vehemently repudiated any involvement in such actions. He emphasized that even though he may not share Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential aspirations, he would never resort to underhanded methods to undermine his campaign.
During a session with the Parliamentary Press Corp, Annoh-Dompreh conveyed his deep admiration for Kennedy Agyapong and underscored his unwavering commitment to refrain from tarnishing his reputation or campaign efforts.
He restated his dedication to fostering a culture of political integrity and equitable competition within the party.
“I don’t know anything about this so-called matter and I feel a lot of pain because this is somebody that I respect, he is not an enemy and I don’t even do this to my opponents in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have their artworks all over Nsawam and how much more will I go about pulling down the artwork of my colleague Member of Parliament.
“This is not the first time they are throwing this allegation at me and I want to tell my colleague that I don’t have anything personal against him.”
He tipped the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be massively endorsed in the upcoming Special Delegates Congress of the NPP.
“If you zero in on what happened in Sunyani in 1998 and all the things that the other contestants have said, there are not going to be any surprises, it will be an emphatic endorsement for the most popular candidate and you know it is the Vice President and he is going to win hands down.”
NPP flagbearer hopeful and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his opinions regarding the purported misappropriation of funds valued at US$1 million, €300,000, and 350,000 Ghana cedis from the former residence of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the ex-Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.
During an interview on TV3 on August 16, 2023, Agyapong highlighted that the money allegedly stolen from the minister could have significant political consequences for the party’s image.
He compared the situation to that of a former Deputy Minister of Communications Victoria Hammah, who according to him was chastised by the public for mentioning her ambition to earn one million dollars.
Agyapong stated that he, personally, was not in a position to advise colleagues who believe that with his blunt nature, he will give them unpalatable advice.
He added “You see, whether we like it or not it is going to affect NPP, I will speak the truth, I’m firm when Victoria Hammah mentioned that if she makes one million dollars, she is going to do ABCD.
“Look at how Ghanaians chastised her, so, the one who just said if I get and the one who has it, so it is a big problem, we cannot run away from it.
“We cannot, I am telling you, that is the truth, whoever is watching or listening …I know there will be backslash but God knows I have spoken the truth,” he added.
Cecilia Dapaah has since July 22 resigned her ministerial position and has been arrested and released on bail by the Special Prosecutor after a search was conducted at her residence.
The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyabeng, and his team further initiated a corruption and corruption-related investigation against Madam Cecilia Dapaah following the alleged theft case.
Further searches at her residence particularly at Abelemkpe discovered additional physical $590, 000 and over GHc2.73 million.
Following from that, the OSP has taken steps by freezing certain bank and investment accounts of the former Minister and is seeking a confirmation order from the High Court in Accra, however, Lawyers of the embattled minister have told the High Court that monies found in the Abelemkpe residence of their client do not mean, she owned them.
In what they described as an “arbitrary exercise of powers,” of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) “based on nothing more than suspicion fuels by misrepresentation of facts and resultant media frenzy,” Madam Cecilia Dapaah’s lawyers said, the application from the OSP should be dismissed.
On the other hand, The OSP has reportedly arrested the husband of Cecilia Dapaah, Daniel Osei Kuffour, in the ongoing investigations.
According to a news report by citinewsroom.com, the arrest of Daniel Osei Kuffour was disclosed during the court hearing on Thursday, August 17, 2023, on the confirmation of the freeze order of Cecilia Dapaah’s bank account and the $590,000 and GHC 2,730,000 found at her house in Abelemkpe.
Dr. Isidore Tuffour, who represented the OSP, told the court that Daapah’s husband had been placed under arrest after the judge presiding over the case asked why she is the only person being investigated.
The lawyer for Cecilia Dapaah, however, indicated that they are not aware of the arrest of their client’s husband.
A military takeover is a situation many in Ghana, including political analysts, are cautioning against.
Such conversation stems from the recent coups witnessed in the West African sub-region, with Niger being the latest country affected.
Last month, a military junta led by Gen Abdourahmane Tchiani seized power from democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who is now accused of treason.
The surge in military takeovers has prompted experts to caution the government to right its wrongs as well as sensitize citizens on the consequences of autocratic governance.
Ghana has recorded a number of military takeovers in the past. It is, however, not immune due to its history.
While Ghana works to find ways to ward off such a situation, New Patriotic Party presidential hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, has shared details of what would happen to the beacon of Africa should it lose its democratic governance practiced for 30 years.
He provided these details during an interview on TV3 on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
According to him, the first line of action by the junta, should a coup happen in Ghana will be the dissolution of Parliament. He submitted that this would be directly followed by the attack of Members of Parliament.
Simultaneously, journalists will be arrested, he said.
“If we make a mistake and we allow coup d’etats all over West Africa, tomorrow it will be me and you. The first thing, two of us, will go to jail before any body. They will dissolve Parliament.
They will arrest journalists. Check all the coups,” he mentioned.
He therefore emphasised the role of the security forces and the need to prevent a coup as it would cost Ghana more to manage a coup situation.
“So the security of this country is important. Prevention is better than cure. Prevention will not cost you as much as you are curing it. The security of this country is very important.”
“The second most important West African country is Ghana,” he added.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Ghana is preparing to send its soldiers to Niger to complement ECOWAS’ measures to return the country to democratic governance.
Mr Agyapong did not outrightly confirm this report, but he noted that “we have obligations as ECOWAS members, and you cannot run away from it.”
Top military leaders from the Economic Community of West African States, (ECOWAS) are expected to hold a two-day meeting in Accra on August 17 and 18, 2023.
The meeting, per reports, is to discuss a possible intervention in Niger, where a junta held a coup last month.
Military takeover in Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea
In Mali, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was ousted from power by a military coalition in August. Subsequently, Mali’s former Defense Minister, Bah Ndaw, assumed the presidency of the new transitional government, with Colonel Assimi Goita appointed as vice president. However, they were both removed from power a year later in May by Colonel Assimi Goita, a 42-year-old.
On September 5, 2021, Guinea experienced a coup d’état as the armed forces captured President Alpha Condé, who had extended his stay in power through a constitutional amendment. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, 43-year-old, was sworn in as transitional leader in October.
In Burkina Faso, President Roch Kabore was ousted from power on January 24, 2022, following a coup led by Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba. However, eight months later, military rule was reestablished, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, 35.
Colonel Assimi Goita
In Burkina Faso, President Roch Kabore was ousted from power on January 24, 2022, following a coup led by Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba. However, eight months later, military rule was reestablished, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency and Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has expressed his support for the deployment of Ghanaian troops to Niger if the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decides on a military intervention.
ECOWAS has urged member states to establish a standby force as a potential solution to the crisis in Niger.
The regional body aims to secure the release of President Mohamed Bazoum from house arrest and reinstate him as the constitutionally-elected head of state.
Scheduled for August 17, ECOWAS’ Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff will meet in Accra to determine the best course of action for restoring constitutional order in Niger.
In an interview with the media, Agyapong, a former member of the ECOWAS Parliament, asserted that a combined West African military effort would act as a deterrent to other states in the sub-region.
“We have an obligation as Ecowas countries and you cannot run away from it,” he said.
He highlighted that ECOWAS member countries have a responsibility to address such situations and prevent coup attempts. Agyapong emphasized that the situation in Niger should be used as an example to discourage future coup d’état attempts, considering the increasing frequency of such incidents in the region.
“should serve as a deterrent because coups d’etat is becoming rampant in Ecowas so we should use Niger to serve as a deterrent and say anybody who tries again, Ecowas will come after them and this is not the first time”.
Recognizing Ghana’s vital contribution to the force, he labeled Ghana as the second most significant country in West Africa and stressed the nation’s importance within ECOWAS.
“In fact, the second most important country in West Africa is Ghana. I’ve been an Ecowas member [of Parliament] before so it is an obligation.”
Agyapong asserted that allowing coups to occur within the sub-region could have serious consequences for political stability, leading to arrests, dissolution of parliaments, and curbs on press freedom.
“If we make a mistake and we allow coups d’etat all over West Africa, tomorrow it will be me and you and the first thing is that the two of us will go to jail first before anybody.
“They will dissolve Parliament, they will arrest journalists, check all the coups. So, the security of this county is very very important and no matter the amount of money prevention is better than cure. Prevention will not cost you as much as you are curing it,” he added.
He emphasized the significance of prioritizing security and prevention measures to avoid costly remedies.
Member of parliament representing Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, claims that Ghanaians frequently mistakenly interpret being straightforward as being arrogant and insulting.
He says he aligns himself with the former trait and rejects accusations that he is being arrogant when he speaks the truth on major issues or on attacks on his person.
In an interview on August 15 on Citi TV, he addressed how his public spat with socialite Afia Schwarzenegger started years ago.
“You mentioned Afia Schwarzenegger, I never knew her until she went on Peace FM to insult me,” Agyapong disclosed adding that his attention had actually been drawn to the insults by a colleague MP “who asked me that ‘what have you done to Afia Schwarzenegger?‘ and I said who is Afia Schwarzenegger?
“Then he retorted, you don’t even know her?” before asking him to go and get the recording of her attack on his person. He defended his subsequent response to Afia stating: “I had to go down to her level for her to feel the pain that every individual that she has insulted also feels.”
The conflict between the Assin Central Member of Parliament and Afia began in 2016, when she challenged him to disclose the source of his wealth after he disparaged the family and former president John Dramani Mahama.
Since then, the two have occasionally gotten into small back-and-forth arguments.
After the Member of Parliament for Assin Central announced his intention to run for his party’s flagbearership position with the hope of becoming Ghana’s president in 2024, Afia Schwarzenegger created a drawing of him and posted it recently.
The actress and comedian Afia Schwarzenegger has, however, denounced this dream, arguing that the MP’s flaws disqualify him from holding the position of highest office in the land.
Assin Central MP and NPP presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, has revealed that he makes $800,000 a month from just rent.
The vociferous MP who was speaking on TV3’ NewDay, stated that he is engaged in numerous business ventures and does not depend on government procurement or contracts to generate income.
“I have a lot of businesses in the country. Even with rent alone, I make over $800,000 a month after withholding taxes. So now that I’m not doing any contract, am I not Kennedy Agyapong?” he said.
Among other things, the Assin Central MP absolved himself from blame in the killing of investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.
He reiterated that he had no hand in the killing of Mr Suale.
“His own deeds caused his death, not me,” he told the host of the show on Thursday, August 16, 2023.
He described him as a bad guy and said Anas used him.
Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has accused the late investigative journalist with Tiger Eye, Ahmed Suale, of attempting to set up Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
According to Mr Agyapong, Ahmed Suale was a key investigator in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye team.
Mr Agyapong claims that Ahmed Suale, unlike Anas, never hid his identity or covered his face during investigations.
In an interview on Citi TV’s Face 2 Face show, the MP noted that but for his “exposé” to disclose the faces behind Tiger Eye’s operations on Net 2 TV, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta would have fallen prey to a set up in Dubai.
Kennedy Agyapong in 2018 revealed Ahmed Suale’s identity on national television in an exposé dubbed “Who watches the watchman”, an action many believe led to his assassination.
The late Ahmed Suale
However, Ken, who has constantly denied such claims, mentioned some of the “dubious” activities Ahmed Suale indulged in that made him a target.
Citing an example of such activity, Mr Agyapong mentioned that the then Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, warned Mr Ofori-Atta after sighting the MP’s exposé.
Mr Ofori-Atta was allegedly on his way to meet a group of people who, unbeknownst to him, were Ahmed Suale himself and his associates.
Upon his arrival in Dubai, the Finance Minister, Mr Ofori-Atta having been forewarned snubbed Ahmed Suale and his team.
“He was the one who set the Finance Minister and those Finance people up with some renowned lawyer. They never saw Anas’ face. So if I say that this the guy, let me tell you the truth today.
When I showed the face of Ahmed Suale, the Finance Minister was on his way to Dubai to meet them. So the Minister of State, Adu Boahen called him and said I’ve seen this on Net2, this is entrapment.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, Ahmed Suale was sloppy in his line of work while alive.
Mr Agyapong explained that unlike his senior colleague Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Ahmed Suale failed to protect his identity.
This, he said made him susceptible to any form of attack by the people he embarrassed.
The Assin Central MP said: “You know Ahmed Suale’s problem, may his soul rest in peace. He made a lot of mistakes.
All the investigations Anas did, Anas never showed up with his face. Ahmed Suale showed his face. So all the people Anas embarrassed in this country, it was Ahmed Suale who set them up.”

A contender for the flagbearer position in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong has expressed his commitment to include individuals in the informal sector within the tax payment framework.
He has outlined this initiative as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at broadening the scope of the country’s tax collection efforts.
During an appearance on Citi TV’s “Face to Face” program, Kennedy Agyapong elaborated that individuals operating in the informal sector, such as artisans, often earn higher monthly incomes than their counterparts in office jobs.
To substantiate his point, he provided an example from his own experience. He mentioned that a mason working at his construction site in Tema earns GH¢150 per day, resulting in a monthly income of around GH¢4,000. Comparatively, a university graduate employed at Oman FM and Kencity Media receives a monthly salary of about GH¢2,700.
Kennedy Agyapong highlighted the disparity where employees of organizations like Oman FM and Kencity Media are subject to taxation, while those involved in artisanal professions such as masonry are not.
To address this discrepancy, Kennedy Agyapong proposed a solution whereby every artisan and worker in Ghana would be required to register, obtaining a license and a unique pin number. This approach would enable their inclusion in the tax system, ultimately contributing to the nation’s revenue generation efforts.
He said, “My policy on taxes is that taxes will be reduced and expanded and what I mean by reduce is that taxes in this country are so high but only a few people are paying taxes.”
“I am a pragmatic person and I have the experience. I am a business person and I am fortunate to have employed educated people, uneducated people, and artisans and I can tell you that artisans make more money than some educated people and this is clear in my construction site in Tema where a mason makes about GH¢150 a day which translates to close to GH¢4000 a month and graduate at Oman and Kencity makes between GH¢2,700 and is taxed in addition but the mason is not taxed,” he added.
The businessman further said, “When I am given the opportunity to become president, every artisan, everybody working in this country will have to register to have a license and a pin number so that we can tax them and when the tax base is expanded, we then reduce taxes.”
Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has accused the late investigative journalist with Tiger Eye, Ahmed Suale, of being sloppy in his line of work while alive.
Engaging host of Citi TV’s Face 2 Face show, Sanda Umaru, Mr Agyapong explained that unlike his senior colleague Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Ahmed Suale failed to protect his identity.
This, he said made him susceptible to any form of attack by the people he embarrassed.
The Assin Central MP said: “You know Ahmed Suale’s problem, may his soul rest in peace. He made a lot of mistakes.

Mr Agyapong accused the late investigative journalist of attemptong to set up Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, but due to his “exposé” on Net 2 TV, the then Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, warned Mr Ofori-Atta.
Upon his arrival at Dubai, he said the Finance Minister snubbed Ahmed Suale.
He actually met them and snubbed them. They didn’t know it was Anas until I showed the face and connected Ahmed Suale to Anas,” he narrated.
Meanwhile, Mr Agyapong says he still stands by his words for Ahmed Suale to be beaten.
He however clarified that that directive was given to his workers who had prompted him that Ahmed Suale was among the individuals he had assisted.
“I showed the video of Ahmed Suale and when they saw it, my workers came to me. They said, don’t you know this guy, you even gave him 1,500 to go and pay his school fees, which I always do for people so I don’t remember.
Then I said to them, you have to be careful. If this guy comes here, beat him up because he is going to set this company up.
No, not that I want to be president and therefore I’ll come and tell you I didn’t say that, no. I said if he comes to my premises, I didn’t say go and beat him outside,” he stated.

The Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has unveiled his visionary agenda, aiming to reshape the mindsets of Ghanaians should he be elected as president.
Speaking to the media, Agyapong shared his strategy, which involves collaborating with musicians from all corners of Ghana to craft an inspiring collection of heroic songs.
These diverse songs, spanning genres like R&B, Highlife, Reggae, and Gospel, are intended to act as catalysts for positive change in the attitudes of the Ghanaian populace.
Agyapong outlined his plan: “I will bring all musicians together to let them come up with heroic songs, and we will organize a concert like ‘we are the world.’ We will all come together to play these songs, and then we will distribute them to the media and schools, fostering patriotism, honesty, and discipline among Ghanaians.”
Agyapong envisions his collaboration with musicians as a powerful means of instilling positive values, aligning with his goal of cultivating a more united and ethically conscious Ghana.
Addressing the deeply ingrained corruption challenges that prompted the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Agyapong stressed the necessity of active Ghanaian involvement as partners in tandem with government initiatives to combat corruption.
He argued that launching an effective fight against corruption requires first changing the mindset of Ghanaians to recognize their stakeholder role in the country’s development.
He emphasized, “We made a mistake by not changing the mindset of Ghanaians. If you want to fight corruption in this country, Ghanaians should be your partners.
You should educate Ghanaians to let them know this has gone wrong, and we have to correct it. If we don’t, it is not good for our country and development.”

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer candidate and member of parliament for the Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong, has opened up about his mother’s death.
Speaking in a Face-to-Face interview with Umaru Sanda on Citi TV on August 15, 2023, he disclosed that his decision to plunge into the political arena had been met with mixed reactions within his family.
He explained that while his mother had been against the idea due to worries about the nature of insults frequently associated with the political scene, his father had supported his political ambitions.
“Well, you know, to tell you the truth, my father was in full support, but my mother couldn’t take it because of the insults and all those things,” he said.
According to the representative for Assin Central, his mother passed away soon after Alhaji Collins Dauda, the brother of the former minister of water resources, works, and housing, issued a threat against him.
Kennedy Agyapong recounted, “To break the news to you, my mother died because of threats against me, when honorable Collins Dauda’s brother threatened to kill me.
“I remember my mother died on the 13th of November, on the 10th I visited her and she was pleading with me to stop politics because they said they were going to kill me, she was like ‘Kwame you will kill me, Kwame you will kill me,’ that was Thursday, and then Friday I left for Kumasi.
“… and Sunday afternoon coming back to Accra, I got the bad news that my mother had died because she was saying my heart, my heart, you will kill me, you will kill me.”
Along with nine other candidates, Kennedy Agyapong is running for the position of NPP flagbearer. His main rivals are Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen.
Prior to the primary election in November 2023 to choose a replacement for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as party leader, the NPP will reduce the 10 candidates who made it through the vetting stage to five in a preliminary vote (scheduled for August).
A potential flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Agyapong, has revealed that his mother passed away due to the threats directed at his life. He attributes her death to the intimidation he faced from a politician’s sibling.
Agyapong, the incumbent Member of Parliament representing the Assin Central constituency, explained that his mother couldn’t withstand the verbal abuse and dangers he faced once he ventured into the political arena.
He said that she had pleaded with him to stop politics on several occasions, but he had refused.
“My mother died because of threats on me,” Agyapong said.
“When Hon Collins Dauda’s brother threatened to kill me, my mother couldn’t take it. She died on the 13th of November. During the week she died, I visited her, and she was pleading with me to stop politics, and she said: Kwame you’ll kill me. That was Thursday, on Friday, I left for Kumasi and while returning to Accra on Sunday afternoon, I got the bad news that my mother had died. And I was told she was saying “my heart, my heart and Kwame you will kill me.”
Agyapong said that he is still grieving the loss of his mother, but he is determined to continue fighting for what he believes in.
He said that he will not be intimidated by the threats that have been made against him, and he will continue to speak out against ills in society and seek the welfare of ordinary citizens.
In a poll conducted by GhanaWeb regarding the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) superdelegates congress, netizens have decided on the five individuals they would want to see contest for the flagbearership position.
The poll, held from Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023, attracted participation from over 70,000.The question posed was, “Who would you vote for in the NPP Super Delegates Congress?”
Among the 70,463 respondents, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong secured the lead with 18,475 votes, representing more than 26 percent of the total participants.
Former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, claimed the second spot with 18,143 votes, which accounted for nearly 26 percent of the respondents.
Notably, energy expert Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku achieved a surprising third place, amassing 17,041 votes, equivalent to over 24 percent of the participants.
This outcome surpassed the expectations, especially as he outperformed Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, a major contender in the race.
Vice President Bawumia secured the fourth position, garnering 13,131 votes, which constituted almost 19 percent of the total respondents.
Securing the fifth spot, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong garnered support from 2,042 participants, which accounted for nearly 3 percent of the total respondents, surpassing 70,000.
The remaining contenders in the poll, namely former Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, ex-Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai Nimo, former Minister for Regional Cooperation Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, each received less than 1 percent of the total votes cast.
The NPP presidential primaries, scheduled for August and November 2023, will feature 10 contestants.
The NPP’s superdelegates conference is set to take place on August 26, 2023, aimed at narrowing down the contenders to five. Subsequently, the main primaries will occur on November 4, 2023, to determine the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections.
Administrator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Communicators Directorate, Paul Kwabena Yandoh, has accused flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong of vote-buying in his campaign ahead of the party’s primaries.
The Administrative Manager at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s office noted that the camp of the Assin Central MP are reported to be giving delegates of the party GHS200,000 as well as cars in order to vote for Mr Agyapong.
Paul Kwabena Yandoh made this claim while refuting reports of vote-buying against the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, by Lawyer William Kusi, the head of the communication team for Kennedy Agyapong in the Ashanti Region.
“Why do you people accuse others from the opposing camp of sharing money? Sometimes, when you meet people, they claim that others are giving away two hundred thousand, plus cars. And now the lawyer is also saying that they are sharing GH¢50,000, which makes the ordinary Ghanaian worry that the NPP primaries is all about money. This is not true, do you understand?,” he said.
According to him, he is certain of vote-buying by the Kennedy Agyapong camp, as their candidate had earlier boasted of being affluent and his willingness to use money to persuade delegates.
“And in any case, aren’t you the same people who claim to have money? Kennedy Agyapong and his supporters, aren’t you the ones who boasted about having money? Now that the conqueror, the champion, the lion is here, you are complaining that someone else is using money to gain votes. You always campaigned for people to vote for someone with wealth; you urged them to vote for Kennedy because he has opened steel factories and achieved other accomplishments.
“The vice president is diligently performing his job, so why is it that there have been so many allegations against him?” he quizzed.
The First Vice Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Fred Oware, has somewhat okayed Hon Kennedy Agyapong’s labeling of some top executives of the party as “thieves”.
This latest development comes after the Assin Central MP threatened to retrieve all materials and monies he doled out to help the New Patriotic Party during the 2012 elections. Hon Agyapong, who is known to be a major financier of the party, revealed some days ago that certain top executives of the party, selfishly apportioned materials meant for the entire party to themselves.
Fuming with rage, the NPP MP launched a verbal onslaught on the national executives; particularly Mr. Jake Obetsebi Lamptey (NPP National Chairman) and Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (NPP General Secretary).
This generated an outcry within the party, and many called on the elders to sanction Kennedy Agyapong just like they have done to other senior members.
But in an interview with Peacefm, Mr. Fred Oware posited that to put the matter to rest, it would be advisable for Ken Agyapong to name those he handed the materials to; for the executives to deal with the matter.
“It is highly possible that Ken handed over the materials to certain specific people so he should be bold to name them… else he would push the innocent ones to come out answering questions they know nothing about,” he said.
Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson did not go easy on Kennedy Agyapong in viral leaked audio purported to be the voice of the former.
The audio which is a direct response to one of Kennedy Agyapong’s cohorts gave detail accounts of how the Assin Central MP has been benefitting massively from successive NPP governments.
According to Madam Koomson, there’s need for Kennedy Agyapong tell the world what he has done for the party because the NPP has equally awarded him with massive contracts running into several millions of dollars.
Kennedy Agyapong has been a supplier of electricity poles and meter to the Electricity Company of Ghana since the Kufuor era the audio says.
“Kennedy as you see him has over GHC500 MILLION to collect from COCOBOD. Even Electricity Company of Ghana, he has been supplying them with meters and electric poles since President Kufour time, The party (NPP) has really helped him”
“So I am not part of those Kennedy Agyapong gives help. That is why when he came to Christ for All Mission to brag and I heard about it I called KT Hammond and Afenyo Markin that these are the lies Kennedy has come to Kasoa to peddle so I want to confront him. Thankfully to God, I met him at KT Hammond’s office where I confronted him and told him my mind because I know I don’t have my hand in his mouth,” she said.
Hawa Koomson also mentions an incident in 2012 when Agyapong claimed to be giving out cars, and she chose not to accept the offer because she did not want to be subject to potential insults from him in the future. She further asserts that she is not among those who receive help from Kennedy Agyapong.
The statement was made in response to an attack by a pro-Ken NPP member on the party’s WhatsApp platform in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
Hawa Koomson, who openly supports Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the NPP flagbearer contest, accuses Kennedy Agyapong of not being a true member of the party. She questions his loyalty, citing his threats to abandon the party and move abroad if he is not elected as the flagbearer.
Furthermore, Hawa Koomson alleges that Agyapong has profited from NPP contracts and is now using his financial assistance to the party as a means to push for his election as the flagbearer. These accusations have likely stirred up controversy within the party and may impact the dynamics of the ongoing flagbearer contest.
A leaked audio recording allegedly featuring the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, criticizing Assin Central Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has recently surfaced on a WhatsApp platform.
In the viral voice note shared by One Ghana TV on YouTube, Hawa Koomson can be heard accusing Kennedy Agyapong of being boastful and using the assistance he offers to people as a means to insult them.
She further reveals that she has even turned down help from Kennedy Agyapong, despite his reputation as a businessman and a prominent financier of the NPP, due to his outspoken nature.
“I am not one of those who will receive his help for him to go out and trumpet for the entire world to hear. In 2012 when he said he giving out cars I inquired from Butey and he told me that I had to pay something small which was GHC500 at the time. I told him I won’t pay because the Toyota Corolla I was using was stronger than the Hyundai he was going to give me.
“Also, because I know Kennedy Agyapong will turn around to insult you in the future whenever he helps you and knowing that I didn’t want to be insulted in the future, I did not go for the car.
The statement by Hawa Koomson was in response to what she said was an attack by a pro-Ken NPP member on the party’s WhatsApp platform in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture who has openly declared her support for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the NPP flagbearer contest also accused Kennedy Agyapong of not being a true member of the party.
“I am not part of those Kennedy Agyapong takes care of and if Ken Agyapong is a true NPP member he would not threaten to abandon the party to go and live abroad if he is not voted for.
“As a true member will you follow someone with such a mindset; someone who says he won’t work for the party if he loses a contest. Would he expect anyone to come and work for him if he wins?” she questioned.
Hawa Koomson goes on to allege that Kennedy Agyapong has made money from the NPP through contracts but is now is now insisting that he is elected flagbearer because of his assistance to the party.

Prior to the explanation, he noted that the significance does not have any direct relationship with the associated aspirants and that “all candidates must work towards winning”.
Number 1 – This signifies creation or the beginning. According to Rev, Dr Tuffuor, this is a number that represents God Almighty. “It also depicts unity,” he added.
He recounted a revelation he had in 2020 where the NPP leadership and government officials had met at the Jubilee House to look at ways to combat corruption.
During discussions, he noted that all but one remained. According to him, the said individual who stayed put forms part of the 10 individuals contesting for the flagbearership position. He withheld the identity of the said individual.
Number 2 – This represents “Witness”. It can also stand for division or separation.
“The Bible says how can two walk together unless they agree,” he said.
Number 3 – The God-head. This, he said shows the trinity of God Almighty – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. For him, it symbolizes “divine completeness”. It also signifies obedience, imitate and likeness.
Number 4 – This number he said signifies Creation. It also stands for the four seasons as well as kingdom, with respect to power or dominance.
Number 5 – This signifies Grace. It also represents atonement, service. Individuals within this region, he says serve.
Number 9 – The number represents fruitfulness. This is an individual who he says will have a massive impact on the country.
Number 10 – This shows law and order. According to him, such an individual is law abiding and ensures all respect the law. This is also a number that represents trial, test and responsibility.
After the explanation, Rev. Dr Adom Tuffuor reiterated that each candidate must justify his inclusion as the numbers does not automatically have an effect on one’s life.
An aspiring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament (MP) representing Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has assured the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Jibril, that he intends to silence his critics by establishing factories in the region.
During an interview with the media on July 24, 2023, he emphasized that Saeed Jibril’s background as a former classroom teacher is different from the realm of politics, and he will overlook the insults directed at him.
Notably, after Kennedy Agyapong’s visit to Damongo, the Savannah Regional Minister urged NPP delegates across the region to vote for a candidate who differs from John Dramani to lead the party in the 2024 elections and avoid supporting radicals who engage in a spree of insults.
Saeed Muhazu Jibril criticized the campaign tactics employed by Kennedy Agyapong and the former NPP general secretary, Kwabena Agyapong, for their disrespectful remarks targeting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which he believed would harm the NPP.
Speaking with the media on July 19, 2023, Saeed Jibril stressed that all campaigns should focus on the party’s achievements, rather than speaking against the very party they seek to lead. He regarded those resorting to insults as unpatriotic and unfit to lead the party.
In response to the comments made by the Savannah Regional Minister, Kennedy Agyapong, during his interview on Wa-based Home Radio, stated that speaking the truth often makes one a target, and he has endured insults while conveying his message.
Kennedy Agyapong expressed his frustration, noting that he refrains from responding to insults for a while, but when he eventually does, it becomes an issue for the party. He considered this treatment unfair.
Furthermore, Kennedy Agyapong shared that despite receiving insults, he chooses to ignore them and provided examples of his achievements. He mentioned plans to construct factories in Savannah to showcase his endeavors.
He also highlighted his significant contributions, such as building the largest cold store facility in Africa, amounting to thirty-one thousand tonnes, all accomplished without any loans or debts to banks.
Kennedy Agyapong emphasized that his accomplishments were beyond the scope of classroom work, urging others to appreciate his efforts and contributions.
On Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted a balloting process to determine the order of its flagbearer hopefuls for the forthcoming special delegates conference on August 26.
Kennedy Agyapong was allocated the first slot, while Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen secured the second slot.
Furthermore, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s representatives selected the 10th position for their candidate during the balloting.
Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) and a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his frustration with the attacks from some party officials leading up to the flagbearership election.
He has made it clear that if these attacks continue and he loses the election, he will not actively participate in the party’s campaign for the 2024 General Election. Instead, he intends to relocate to America to enjoy his life.
During an interview with Home Radio, Agyapong firmly stated, “I’m telling you, if they continue the way they are going, big no.
If they go the way they are going, when I lose, I will go back to America. You say you can win, win without Ken Agyapong. Let Adomako Baafi and all those guys go and do the campaign. You think I’m a fool to spend my money for these young guys to insult me? If they stop, fine. If they don’t, then count me out.”
Despite his strong stance on the attacks and his decision not to campaign if they persist, Agyapong maintains that he is prepared to lead the NPP into the 2024 General Election. However, he also makes it clear that losing the flagbearer election wouldn’t be seen as a major setback for him.
Agyapong is confident that if elected, he possesses pragmatic solutions to address the numerous challenges faced by Ghanaians. Among the ten aspirants vying for the NPP’s flagbearer position, he is considered one of the three leading contenders ahead of the upcoming polls.
An old video featuring presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has surfaced, where he is seen showering praises on the brilliance of Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Kennedy Agyapong, who is vying for the NPP flagbearer position along with nine other aspirants for the upcoming elections, had predominantly centered his campaign on criticizing the Vice President.
However, last week, after indirectly criticizing Dr. Bawumia for the recent depreciation of the Cedi, an old video resurfaced, displaying Kennedy Agyapong absolving Dr. Bawumia of blame.
As the Assin North MP intensifies his campaign, another throwback video has emerged, where he lauds the performance of Vice Presidents in the 4th Republic.
In the video, Kennedy Agyapong discusses the effectiveness of Vice Presidents under various regimes and highlights Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional brilliance and capabilities.
He attributes this effectiveness to both Dr. Bawumia’s natural abilities and the leadership style of President Akufo-Addo, which has allowed him to shine.
“I want Ghanaians to understand that it is not every President that allows their Vice Presidents to shine. It is Akufo-Addo’s style of government managing the country that has allowed the Vice President,” said Kennedy Agyepong in 2021.
He added: “But Dr Bawumia himself is naturally good. If he was like Mahama, he would have been ineffective.”
In the 2021 video, Kennedy Agyapong emphasizes that not all Presidents give their Vice Presidents the opportunity to excel, but President Akufo-Addo’s management style has allowed Dr. Bawumia to showcase his brilliance.
He further contrasts Dr. Bawumia’s competence with that of former Vice President Mahama, suggesting that the latter might have been less effective in a similar role.
These videos showcasing Kennedy Agyapong praising Vice President Bawumia and acknowledging his competence stand in stark contrast to his recent campaign messages, which have been critical of the Vice President.
Assin Central Member of Parliament and presidential hopeful of the NPP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has addressed the controversy surrounding his strategic comment on the government’s management of the cedi, clarifying that it was not targeted at Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.
In an interview on Home Radio, Mr Agyapong explained that his remarks were directed towards a specific Member of Parliament, rather than the Vice President.
He asserted that his intention was not to attack Vice President Bawumia, but to criticize another parliamentarian who had questioned the government’s strategic approach.
“The truth hurts…so you are the victim, and I am educating you, and you think I’m hitting back? You see, they are not being fair. I did not hit the Vice President but I hit one MP because he said, ‘We don’t want somebody who will come and say that I have done this and that for the party and Ghana, but we want a strategist,” Agyapong quoted.
Mr Agyapong then pointed out an incident in Parliament where the said MP had claimed that Ghana would not approach the International Monetary Fund (IMF), only to have the country seek IMF assistance later. This led Agyapong to question the MP’s claims of being a strategist, criticizing what he described as “diabolic ways”.
Press disappointment
The Assin Central lawmaker also expressed his disappointment with the media, accusing them of sensationalising news and not providing the full context of his statements.
He emphasised that his remarks were made in an attempt to advise against divisive campaigning within the party and to promote unity among its members.
Mr Agyapong further opened up about his experiences with politics and the challenges he faced, stating, “The people that I have helped, made them who they are today, they are the ones that are against me. I bought cars, gave them money, campaigned for them to win their seats, but now, they’re my number one enemies. But I just look at them, and I say Lord, forgive them because of their stomach”.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a hopeful for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position, Kennedy Agyapong has reaffirmed his belief that pragmatic leadership outweighs language proficiency in politics.
While campaigning in the northern parts of the country and addressing delegates on Twitter, he emphasized that effective leadership can create job opportunities and improve people’s financial well-being.
Agyapong stressed that politics should not be solely about English proficiency but rather the ability to develop the country and uplift its citizens.
Agyapong is considered a frontrunner in the NPP presidential primaries, competing with Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia and former trade minister Alan Kyerematen.
Alongside them, seven other aspirants have been approved to contest in the preliminary election, which will eventually narrow down the number of candidates to five before the main election in November this year.
Political analyst Kweku Adu-Gyamfi says he is taken aback by the fact that Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has expressed interest in becoming Ghana’s president despite his worrying track record.
According to Mr Adu-Gyamfi, this has only become possible owing to the bad running of the economy by President Akufo-Addo.
In an interview on Original TV on July 19, 2023, the political analyst argued that should it not have been bad reputation of the current government, certain individuals would not have dared to vie for the highest position of the land.
He described the Assin Central MP as one of the “bad characters” in the country.
“Akufo-Addo has made the presidency cheap and when anybody wakes up s/he wants to become president. He (Akufo-Addo) came to deceive us; to get hold of the presidency so that he would enrich himself, his family, his wife, his concubines and all that.
“This guy (Akufo-Addo) has messed up the country, he has messed our economy. He has messed up the reputation of this country and no nobody is talking. So, governance has become so cheap that a person like Kennedy Agyapong, such a character, is also coming for us to vote for him to become president.
“… is not for the fact that Ghana is now cheap, why should we allow somebody like Kennedy Agyapong to even mount a podium to say he wants to be president of this country. Who has Kennedy Agyapong not insulted in this country… it is the NPP that has been so cheap, China made NPP. That is why they have elements like Kennedy Agyapong wanting to be a flagbearer of such a disgraceful political party,” he said.
All 10 flagbearer hopefuls of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been cleared to contest in the upcoming primaries slated for November 4, 2023.
They are former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku an energy expert, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The others are Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former Offinso North MP, former Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Attorney General Joe Ghartey and Francis Addai-Nimoh, former MP for Asante Mampong.
The General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong disclosed this in a press release issued on Wednesday, July 12.
MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has received criticism for his recent comments targeting Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia concerning Ghana’s economic challenges.
Agyapong is among nine contenders vying for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership.
Bawumia, considered the primary frontrunner, enjoys widespread support from numerous MPs who have been accompanying him on campaign trails nationwide.
Four pro-Bawumia MPs responded to Kennedy Agyapong’s criticism, deeming it baseless and unjustified, as the economic challenges were a result of external factors.
Currently, Ghana is under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, aiming to secure US$3 billion over three years. The initial tranche of US$600 million was disbursed earlier this year, with more tranches scheduled for release.
1. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, MP for Sekondi
Egyapa-Mercer emphasized that any assessment of the Vice President’s performance should begin from 2017 and 2018 until the present.
He firmly stated that the economic downturn was influenced by global factors beyond the Vice President’s control, absolving him of responsibility for the country’s economic challenges.
“Dr Bawumia was superintending over an economy that was growing 7 percent on average in 2017, 2018, and 2019 and so in 2020 what happened? They recognize the issues that have taken us to where we are that are not attributed to Bawumia, that is not to say that he is reneging on his duties.
“He did not bring covid and if you think covid did not have an impact on the economy, that is your beef. He stands tall and he is the one to help us break the 8,” the Deputy Energy Minister said.
2. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, MP for Takoradi
Darko-Mensah firmly asserted that the economic downturn was primarily caused by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He pointed out that this fact has been confirmed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is currently providing financial assistance to Ghana through a bailout program.
“..we were all in the country when COVID broke. Were you the one who manufactured COVID? Even the IMF who are giving us a bailout said we (NPP) did not create the problem, as our economic challenges are as a result of COVID,” he stressed.
In addition, Darko-Mensah highlighted take-or-pay energy-sector contracts signed during the previous government’s tenure as a significant contributor to the economic challenges.
He questioned the connection between these contracts and the decision made by Dr. Bawumia, himself, or Ken Ofori-Atta to seek assistance from the IMF. Darko-Mensah implied that these contracts were separate issues from the necessity of seeking IMF support.
Amankwa-Manu, from the Atwima-Kwanwoma Constituency, stated that all NPP MPs, including Kennedy Agyapong, who voted in favor of various revenue measures to secure the bailout deal, cannot now criticize Bawumia for the economic situation as he is not an MP.
In response to Kennedy Agyapong’s critique of Bawumia’s economic management, Amankwa-Manu posed a rhetorical question in an interview with Oyerepa TV: “If you were against our IMF approach, wouldn’t you have voted against it?” He implied that Agyapong, having supported the IMF approach, cannot now shift blame onto Bawumia.
“But if you were part of the decision and you claim that because of an internal election (NPP flagbearership race), now that we have voted and agreed on the issue, it is now that some people want to walk back their steps? Are we in Parliament with Bawumia?” he quizzed.
“I don’t belong to that school of thought, what is not good for me, I will strictly state so from the onset. He cannot absolve himself now having voted for the E-Levy, an IMF conditionality. He has no moral right to absolve himself having gone with the team to agree on the issue,” he added.
Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has criticized Kennedy Agyapong, his fellow lawmaker from the Assin Central constituency, who is also vying for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position.
The minister accuses Agyapong of displaying greed and unfairly targeting both the government and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also a contender in the NPP race.
During an interview on Takoradi-based Radio 360 on Monday (July 17), Darko-Mensah defended Bawumia against Agyapong’s harsh criticisms. Agyapong had recently blamed Bawumia for the economic challenges faced by Ghana.
Darko-Mensah asserted that the economic downturn was primarily a result of the impact of COVID-19, a fact acknowledged by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is currently providing financial assistance to Ghana.
“..we were all in the country when COVID broke. Were you the one who manufactured COVID? Even the IMF who are giving us a bailout said we (NPP) did not create the problem, as our economic challenges are as a result of COVID,” he stressed.
Additionally, Darko-Mensah pointed out that the economic challenges were further compounded by the take-or-pay energy-sector contracts signed during the previous government’s tenure. He questioned the relevance of these contracts to the responsibilities of Dr. Bawumia, himself, or Ken Ofori-Atta in leading the country into an IMF program.
Regarding Kennedy Agyapong, Darko-Mensah highlighted that the MP has been a significant beneficiary of government contracts throughout the years. He suggested that Agyapong should consider returning those contracts and rejecting any new ones due to the current economic constraints faced by the country.
“Ghana is a member of the IMF and they have given us some assistance during COVID. Since Ghana went to the IMF the cedi is stabilising …what intrigues me however is, between you and I, we all know one of the biggest government contractors is the man you are talking about (Kennedy Agyapong).
“When things were bad and he was benefitting, that was right, but now that he wants to be a presidential candidate, he has forgotten about all those benefits he derived and wants us to forget about all that?
“Then he should reverse (sic) all those contracts he earned and hand it to others and say because Ghana is now back to the IMF, I will not take any government contract again. If he continues like that then technically you want to act like a greedy person who wants to benefit both ways.
“If he wants to find someone to blame for Ghana going to IMF, why won’t he also along the lines of equity say that he will not take any of the contracts he is taking during this IMF period? He is just misleading people and it needs to be straightened,” the minister added.
Former Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Adomako Baafi, has voiced his criticism of Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a potential NPP flagbearer. Baafi believes that Agyapong’s recent onslaught against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also vying for the NPP flagbearer position, is rooted in envy and animosity.
During an interview with Wontumi TV on July 17, 2023, Baafi highlighted that Kennedy Agyapong’s change in attitude towards Dr. Bawumia is a result of his personal desire for power. Baafi recalled instances where Agyapong had previously praised the Vice President as an exceptional individual. However, due to Agyapong’s own ambitions, he has shifted his stance and resorted to making derogatory remarks about Dr. Bawumia.
“Everyone should go to GhanaWeb and see what Kennedy Agyapong was saying about Dr. Bawumia before, that he is the best person, but because you’re contesting with him and based on greed, you are saying all these things, I won’t waste my time on you. But the most important thing is that Bawumia is human, so no matter what, he might have some fault.”
He added “…since 2007 when Bawumia joined the party, I was with my brother Kennedy Agyapong at that time, so I am very careful to speak against him but the point is that when Bawumia set 175 questions for Amissah Arthur I was sitting with him in his station and he was saying Bawumia as intelligent but today he is not right?
“When we went to the Supreme Court and Bawumia was defending (the election petition) he was like; ‘what! this man is intelligent’ but now because of power, you are downgrading him, if you will remember when we were bringing Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong was the only person who spoke against it so he is revisiting his hatred against him.”
Kennedy Agyapong has voiced his criticism of the current administration, specifically targeting the handling of the Ghanaian economy, which is currently operating under an IMF-supported program.
Agyapong expressed concerns about the depreciation of the local currency against the dollar and its significant impact on businesses and livelihoods.
While addressing party delegates in Kintampo, Bono East region, Agyapong recounted his personal experience, stating that he had possessed $40 million in cedi equivalent in March 2022, but by August of the same year, its value had declined to about $16 million due to the depreciation of the cedi.
Although Agyapong did not mention Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia by name, it was evident that his criticisms were directed towards the Head of the Economic Management Team of the government.
Agyapong highlighted the increase in the exchange rate from 4 cedis to 1 dollar during the time of assuming power to the current rate of 12 cedis per dollar, questioning Bawumia’s claims of being a strategist.
On July 12, 2023, the NPP approved all ten candidates, including Kennedy Agyapong, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, to contest the flagbearer position.
These candidates will go through a super delegates congress to narrow down the number to five before the party’s main congress on November 4, 2023. Other contenders in the race include Joe Ghartey, Kwadwo Poku, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who have all thrown their hats into the ring.
A presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has boasted about being the only person in Ghana to have challenged the renowned investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Speaking to members of the NPP at the Berekum East Constituency in the Bono Region, Ken Agyapong claimed that he saved the party from the clutches of Anas.
He alleged that Anas had recorded some NPP leaders in Dubai and was planning to use the footage to blackmail them and prevent them from seeking a second term in 2020.
He added that Anas had put a lot of Ghanaians, including politicians, civil servants and security officials, into hiding with his exposés, but he (Ken) had silenced him.
“When Anas recorded NPP leaders in Dubai, February 8, 2018, (4:30 pm Dubai time) and he was bragging that he (Anas) had the NPP in his hands like an egg and that he would not allow the party to go for a second term.
“He (Anas) silenced judges, soldiers, police officers, officers of the GFA (Ghana Football Association), every Ghanaian was afraid. I’m the only man in this country who challenged Anas. Today, I have silenced him.
Ken Agyapong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, said that Ghanaians trust him because of his handling of Anas, among other things.
He urged the NPP supporters to choose him as their flagbearer for the 2024 elections.
“If I had not challenged Anas, he would have gotten so much power that at some point, he would be determining when people should go to sleep. It took only Kennedy Agyapong to challenge Anas. And so, Ghanaians believe in me,” he said.
So far, ten people in the NPP have filed nominations to contest in the yet-to-be-held presidential primaries.
Candidates include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; a former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen; Kwadwo Poku, an energy expert; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey; a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto; a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; a former MP for Offinso North, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku; and a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko.
Defamation suit
The Accra High Court recently dismissed a GH¢25 million defamation suit against Ken Agyapong brought by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The investigative journalist sued the MP in 2018 for allegedly making false and defamatory statements about him after he released his investigative piece #Number 12, which exposed some rot in Ghana football.
The court presided over by Justice Eric Baah ruled that although the words spoken by the MP were factual and capable of defamation, Anas could not prove them.
The court also described Anas as an “investigative terrorist” who uses blackmail to extort money from his opponents and people he does not like.
The MP has hailed the ruling as a victory for straight talk over investigative terrorism, while Anas has expressed grave misgivings about it and described it as a travesty of justice.
Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has defended his decision to describe members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in unprintable words over some actions they take.
In 2015, Mr Agyapong went ballistic after discovering a leaked tape where former Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo, was making comparisons to the achievements of the Akyem and the Asantes. Per reports, the audio was leaked by an NPP member to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Eight years later, Mr Agyapong says he still stands by his comments.
“They are saying I have said that NPP members are foolish. Let me explain what happened. Honourable Osafo-Maafo met members of the party at Koforidua and he was talking to them about the history of the NPP, particularly the role the Akyem people played in the establishment of the party.
“During his remarks, he at a point stated that the people of Akyem played a more important role than the Ashantis. They recorded him and sent the audio to NDC radio stations and newspapers and the following day the issue blew up.
“I went on a programme on Adom FM and the tape was played. After hearing it, I said NPP members are foolish and that I don’t know why I belong to the party. What was the mindset of those who recorded Osafo-Maafo and gave it to NDC radio stations?,” he asked.
Mr Agyapong made the reiteration while speaking to members of the NPP at the Berekum East Constituency in the Bono Region this week as part of his campaign to become the party’s flagbearer.
According to him, should a similar instance occur, he would not restrain himself from making such comments.
Flagbarer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has invoked curses on individuals in the party whom he claims have stabbed him in the back.
During a recent campaign event in the Berekum constituency, Kennedy Agyapong claimed that some individuals in the party he had hoped to receive their support in his pursuit for the flagbearership position have turned their back him, offering their assistance to other contenders.
Describing them as “ungrateful human beings”, he said their ingratitude will one day catch up with them.
“Very very ungrateful human beings because when you look at the young boys a certain candidate has deployed and the things they go saying about me; they are people I’ve helped too. People I’ve helped in this world. I campaigned for some and bought pickups for some to become ministers, I even lobbied positions for some of them but today they are saying I should never mention that I’ve helped them. But as God lives, everybody will get their reward,” he stated.
Mr Kennedy Agyapong further revealed a situation of ingratitude meted out to a party faithful who financially assisted the NPP, but had been abandoned by the very individuals she assisted and has been left for ruins.
“There is an ex-police officer in Berekum here whose wife operates a cold store at Tema. It was the woman who paid duty for the clearance of 80 pickup cars… But do you know something, if you if you don’t vote well in the NPP, today is her turn but tomorrow may be your turn.”
“The woman after all the money she spent on NPP has had her business collapse under an NPP government. There is one minister who has to go and beg the woman; he thinks he has seen everything in this life. A young minister from Ashanti Region and I am not saying this to disgrace the woman but whenever the woman mentions his name, she goes on to say ‘Ken let me visit the loo and come.’ I swear to God. You can hear her pain for all the financing she did for the party and how NPP has repaid her; very ungrateful human beings,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, approved all ten candidates who filed to contest the flagbearership race.
They are former Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Kwadwo Poku an energy expert, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko, former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
The others are Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, a former Offinso North MP, former Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Attorney General Joe Ghartey and Francis Addai-Nimoh, former MP for Asante Mampong.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has slammed the party for letting down one of its major donors, Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh.
He said that Ms Asomah-Hinneh, the owner of Labianca Company, a cold store business in Tema, had generously supported the NPP with funds and vehicles, but was rewarded with neglect and sabotage that led to the collapse of her company.
Speaking to NPP delegates in Berekum as part of his campaign tour, Mr Agyapong revealed that Ms Asomah-Hinneh was so traumatised by the party’s ingratitude that she could not bear to hear the name of a certain minister from the Ashanti Region.
“She paid duty for 80 pick up cars that we used for our campaign… But today, her business is gone under an NPP government. There is one minister who owes her an apology; he thinks he has it all.
“A young minister from Ashanti Region who makes her so sick that whenever she mentions his name, she says ‘Ken, let me visit the loo and come.’
“I swear to God. You can feel her pain for all the sacrifices she made for the party and how NPP has repaid her; very ungrateful human beings,” he said.
Mr Agyapong also accused some members of the party and the government who are loyal to a specific candidate of being unfair to him as well.
He urged the delegates to vote wisely and not to fall for empty promises or they would also suffer in the future.
The NPP on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, cleared all ten aspirants who filed to contest the flagbearership race.
The ten, including Mr Agyapong, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, will face a super delegates congress where the number will be reduced to five before the party’s main congress on November 4, 2023.
A prospective flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has charged the ruling party with treating one of its major donors, Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh, unfairly.
Kennedy Agyapong asserts that Miss Asomah-Hinneh’s Labianca Company did not fail as a result of some party members’ lack of gratitude, but rather as a result of the agony and serious anguish that they caused her.
“There is an ex-police officer in Berekum whose wife operates a cold store at Tema. It was the woman who paid duty for the clearance of 80 pick up cars… But do you know something… today it is her turn, but tomorrow it may be your turn,” Kennedy Agyapong told NPP delegates in Berekum during a campaign stop.
He pointed out that Miss Asomah-Hinneh has endured so much suffering that she reacts with amazement when a certain minister from the Ashanti Region is mentioned.
“A young minister from Ashanti Region and I am not saying this to disgrace the woman but whenever the woman mentions his name, she goes on to say ‘Ken, let me visit the loo and come.’
“I swear to God. You can hear her pain for all the financing she did for the party and how NPP has repaid her; very ungrateful human beings,” he stated.
Kennedy Agyapong proceeded to accuse certain party members and government officials aligned with a specific candidate of demonstrating the same ingratitude towards him.
As a result, he cautioned the delegates to exercise caution when casting their votes, as they could also face similar mistreatment in the future.
On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the New Patriotic Party granted approval to all ten candidates who submitted their candidacy for the flagbearership race.
These ten candidates, including Kennedy Agyapong, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, will go through a super delegates congress, where the number will be reduced to five, prior to the party’s main congress scheduled for November 4, 2023.
A captivating video has recently surfaced on social media, showcasing a moment between Kennedy Agyapong, a prominent Member of Parliament (MP) and a hopeful New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, and Sarah Adwoa Safo, the respected MP for Dome Kwabenya. The intriguing one-minute-thirty-second clip, shared by Oyerapa TV/FM, has captivated users and triggered a flurry of discussions online.
In the video, the distinguished Kennedy Agyapong, who also serves as the MP for Assin Central, is seen approaching Adwoa Safo as she gracefully enters the parliamentary chamber for her official duties. A sense of anticipation fills the air as Kennedy Agyapong discreetly hands a pristine white envelope to Adwoa Safo, initiating an intriguing exchange.
Adwoa Safo, taken aback by the unexpected gesture, delicately taps Kennedy Agyapong and engages in a brief conversation with him. With grace and poise, she carefully places the envelope inside her bag, leaving onlookers wondering about its contents.
Social media has been ablaze with discussions surrounding this enigmatic exchange, with speculations swirling about the envelope’s significance. Observers have noted the envelope’s seemingly substantial size, leading to conjecture that it may have contained a significant sum of money.
Yet, the true purpose behind Kennedy Agyapong’s gesture and the contents concealed within the envelope remain shrouded in mystery, allowing room for elegant speculation and contemplation.
In light of Kennedy Agyapongand Adwoa Safo’s known connection, as they share the joy of parenthood with at least two children, some have pondered whether the envelope might have contained financial support for their beloved offspring. However, it is important to note that these assumptions remain unconfirmed.
The video has undoubtedly captivated the attention of discerning individuals, drawing them into an intriguing web of curiosity and speculation. As the whispers and theories continue to circulate, only time will reveal the true nature of this intriguing gesture between two esteemed Members of Parliament.
Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, have set an example of graceful and respectful politics through a recent display of camaraderie.
These two influential and controversial figures, known for their opposing views, set aside their differences and demonstrated the power of unity.
They were captured in a video circulating on social media, eagerly approaching each other to exchange in an enthusiastic handshake and embrace, while onlookers cheered them on, clearly amazed by the rare occurrence.
Both individuals are currently in the Central Region to observe and support their respective parties during the Assin North by-election.
The Assin North by-election holds significant political importance, driven by the legal complexities surrounding the constituency’s 2020 general election and the subsequent nullification of James Gyakye Quayson‘s parliamentary seat. The Supreme Court ruling cited Mr. Quayson’s dual citizenship of Ghana and Canada at the time of his election as a violation of the Constitution. As a result, this by-election serves as a crucial chapter in the ongoing political narrative.
The main contenders for the seat in this consequential by-election are Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Charles Opoku, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The outcome of this election will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of Assin North’s political representation.
The embrace between General Mosquito and Kennedy Agyapong transcends party lines and serves as a reminder that even in the face of political differences, harmony, and respect can prevail. It is a moment that highlights the potential for collaboration and dialogue, fostering a more inclusive and unified political landscape in Ghana.
Presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong has objected the notion that the country’s economy will thrive due to the availability of Gold.
In a post cited on social media by the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), he mentioned that about 32 products can be derived from Cassava and a number of items he considers more relevant for the country’s turn around rather than Gold,
According to him, Cassava, sugarcane, Palm oil are among other major resources the country can invest in to rack income to improve upon current economic woes
This, he said, “Unfortunately, we believe that Gold is the ultimate I think otherwise, I personally believe that Cassava is more important than Gold, Cassava is a necessity and Gold is a luxury, Sugarcane is a necessity and Gold is a luxury, Palm is a necessity and Gold is a luxury. There are over 32 products that can be made from Cassava alone.”
His viewpoint was earlier in the day mentioned during his filing of nomination for the NPP flagbearer position on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, before proceeding to make a social media post to reiterate, signifying how important this message is to his campaign.
He makes the 7th aspirant to file his nomination for the flagbearer slot of the party.
He was accompanied by scores of supporters despite the heavy downpour, scores of supporters followed the Assin Central MP to the party’s headquarters in Accra.
He was accompanied by a number of close allies and teeming supporters who thronged the NPP headquarters in Accra for the event.
One of the notable faces captured at the venue was former Ghana Football Association boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.
In his bid to become the flagbearer of theNew Patriotic Party (NPP) and potentially the President of Ghana, Kennedy Agyapong has pledged to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards corruption and any activities related to corruption.
That, he said, would ensure accountability from public office holders and deliver the desired development for Ghanaians.
“I believe in accountability. If God gives me the nod, he (pointing at his Campaign Manager) will be the Chief of Staff. Listen to me very carefully, one strike and he is out. Ghana first, he comes second,” he said.
“If he does anything against this country, I will fire him. That is the only way we can move this country forward. So, can you imagine if I have fired my Chief of Staff. The rest would sit up because even if the Chief of Staff has been fired, what about me the director, what about me the manager? It trickles down and we become discipline.”
Mr Agyapong made the remarks after filing his nomination forms to contest the flagbearership of the NPP, inAccra.
The MP also mentioned creation of job opportunities for the teeming youth if elected as flagbearer of the Party and ultimately, the president as his priority.
He said Ghana had abundant natural resource such as arable land which supported agriculture.
“I have visited about 180 constituencies and have come to realise that we as politicians have done a disservice to the nation. With the arable lands, seas, rivers that God has given to us, we are endowed with so many minerals, a lot of opportunities in this country. But, everywhere you go, especially Volta Region, the resources are untapped. And I want Ghanaians to give the opportunity and challenge me that, I will make sure I turn the fortune of this country around, he said.
“I don’t believe in theory. I am a pragmatic person, I believe in practical things. What I saw in Volta Region, what I saw in Afram Plains area and Northern Region, believe me that we can change this country.”
Mr Agyapong stressed that Ghana’s inflation and interest rate woes where attributable to the country’s inability to produce and export more to earn .
He said, going forward, Ghana must pursue rigorous agro-processing policies to add more value to its raw materials to boost its foreign exchange earning.
“I don’t believe in theory. Your inflation will be stable only when you have been able to stabilize prices, interest rate will be stable only when we stabilize our prices here and especially when our export exceeds import and we have excess of the foreign currency, that is when we can stabilize this country.
“It is not only book. Let’s get down to work,” he added.
He called for a change in the mindset of Ghanaians which made them feel inferior to citizens of other countries, stressing that, the time had come for them to be patriotic and put the country first.
He also urged delegates and Ghanaians at large, to “have faith in me that there is a new dawn that is going to change this country.”
The NPP opened nomination for its presidential primary May 26, 2023.
The one-month long exercise is expected to close on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
The Party has scheduled August 26 for its Special Elections as well as November 4, for the National Conference to elect a flagbearer for the 2024 general election.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party, identified himself as the most significant private employer of people from Ghana’s Volta Region.
As a Member of Parliament for Assin Central and a successful businessman, Agyapong asserted that the only person who could possibly surpass him in this regard is Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of the Asogli Traditional Area.
“I am yet to find out who is making that propaganda, but I will give Togbe Afede the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he is the only person who has employed more Voltarians than me. However, I am still verifying this because, out of the 7,158 workers I employ, 827 are from the Volta Region,” he stated during his campaign stop in the Hohoe Constituency.
Kennedy Agyapong addressed allegations of being anti-Ewe, the predominant tribe in the Volta Region.
While speaking to the delegates in Hohoe, the flagbearer hopeful dismissed the accusations and emphasized his strong connections to the people of the Volta Region.
“I want to inform you today, amidst the ongoing propaganda thatKennedy Agyapong doesn’t like Ewes. If you don’t know, let me tell you. My wife is from Adidome, and I am glad the minister is here. In fact, before I speak, please clap for me. Do you know why I am asking you to clap for me? I have given you four beautiful, intelligent daughters, and they have all attended the best universities in the world,” he confidently stated.
Former communications director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)Yaw Adomako Baafi, has responded toKennedy Agyapong, one of the party’s flagbearer hopefuls, after Agyapong claimed that Baafi had been deceiving the public by stating that the government has not done anything for him.
Baafi countered by asserting that nobody in the NPP has benefited more from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government than Ken Agyapong himself. However, Agyapong persistently attempts to undermine the government despite his own personal gains.
During an interview on Wontumi TV on June 14, 2023, which was monitored by GhanaWeb, Baafi revealed that Agyapong and his family members have been appointed to positions within the current government. Nevertheless, Agyapong continues to criticize and undermine its efforts.
“He said I have been given a Pajero… but what has he been given. He is the board Chairman of Ghana Gas. His wife is the Board Chairman of the Ghana Maritime Authority. If you come to parliament, he is the head of the Select Committee on Defence and Interior and he supervises all the military and police contracts.
“If you come to COCOBOD, he (Ken) has been given a lot of contracts there. He also has contracts at the Ministry of Energy, same at the Ministry of Education including TVET contracts.
“So, if I got a Pajero and you say I’m complaining, why are you also criticising the governance of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia despite all you have gotten from the government?” he said in Twi.
Background:
Ken Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin, accused Adomako Baafi of lying about not receiving support from the NPP after he helped the party win the 2016 elections.
“You were telling polling station executives that you have not received anything; meanwhile, you were one of the first people Akufo-Addo gave a brand new Pajero to when he won,” he added.
He also accused the former NPP communication director of deliberately lying to the party folk just to gain support for the candidate he is supporting in the NPP flagbearer race.
He said that he bought a car for the former NPP national executive and even gave him money to go to the hospital when he was sick, but today he is spreading lies because of politics.
“You Adomako Baafi… before the (2016) election, I gave you a Honda pickup. When he was sick, I gave him money to go to the hospital, and today he is supporting a candidate and he is going around peddling lies,” he said.
