Mahama claims some NPP members want NDC in power and NPP ousted

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate for 2024, John Dramani Mahama, claims that some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members are secretly hoping for his victory in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

He believes this sentiment stems from their desire to see the NPP reorganize after a defeat.

Speaking to party supporters during his tour of the Upper East region, the former President highlighted that many within the NPP feel that power is concentrated among a select few, making a return to opposition necessary for the party’s renewal.

“There are many of my friends in the NPP who come and tell me, ‘NDC, you have to do well and get our party out of power’.

“These are NPP people because the NPP has been captured by a small group of people. This is not Kufuor’s group of people…This is not Kufuor’s NPP. This is a different NPP.

It has been hijacked by some people and so the democrats and others in NPP actually want the party to lose so that they can go back into opposition so that they can go and reorganize,” he stressed.

The NDC flagbearer also promised to complete all projects abandoned by the Akufo-Addo administration when voted into power on December 7.

According to him, it was important to complete ongoing projects before embarking on any new projects to help save scarce resources.

Addressing the chiefs and queen mothers at the Bawku Naaba’s Palace in the Upper East Region, the former President said it was disheartening to realise that most projects started by the NDC government have been abandoned by NPP.

“I cut sod to start the Tamne irrigation project and we didn’t complete it before we left. We finished phase one; this government continued it slowly but still, it hasn’t been done.

This project will bring about 3000 hectares of land under irrigation so that our young people can do dry season gardening, they can do all-year-round gardening so that they don’t go down South to look for menial jobs.

“So, when we come, we’ll continue the Tamne project because we know it’s going to benefit four districts in this area,” he said.

  • July 1 will be a holiday again – Mahama promises Ghanaians

July 1 will be a holiday again – Mahama promises Ghanaians

The 2024 flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has pledged to reinstate July 1 as a national holiday in Ghana if he wins the upcoming elections.

July 1, marking Ghana’s transition to a Republic in 1960, was an annual celebration until the Akufo-Addo administration altered its status, making it commemorative and replacing it with the August 4 Founders’ Day.

During the second day of his tour in the Upper East Region, Mahama criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to shift the holiday from July 1 to August 4.

He accused the current administration of attempting to “rewrite history” by replacing Republic Day with Founders’ Day, a change he vehemently opposes.

“Apart from destroying the economy, one of the things this government wants to do is to rewrite our history, and we shall not allow them to rewrite our history because the president said he does not accept that one person can be the founder of our nation,” Mahama stated.

“Nobody can come and rewrite our history. Indeed, for those of you who don’t know it, when the Queen finally agreed to give Ghana independence, the UGCC that Nana Akufo-Addo is fighting to be recognized as founders of Ghana wrote a petition. They sent people to England to tell the Queen not to grant independence because we are not ready yet.”

This comes in the wake of President Akufo-Addo’s August 3 address, where he reignited the debate by asserting that Ghana was not founded by a single individual.

Mahama assured that an NDC government would restore July 1 as a holiday to honor Ghana’s republic.

“July 1 is our Republic Day and we also made it our senior citizens day. They have come to take the holiday from July 1 to August 4 which is the day the UGCC was founded.”

“When we come to office, we will rectify those things. July 1 will be a holiday again,” he declared.

You can’t rewrite Ghana’s history – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo amid Nkrumah’s legacy saga

Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized President Akufo-Addo for his recent comments regarding Ghana’s founders.

During his address to the nation on August 3, President Akufo-Addo asserted that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was not the sole founder of Ghana, stating, “I reject completely the notion that Ghana was founded by one man.”

He added, “While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge for ourselves that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations.”

In response, Mr. Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s history is well-established and should be respected. “We all know the history and will follow our history. When we are elected, as president I promise you, we will reset all,” he asserted.

Mahama elaborated, explaining that the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), which included J.B. Danquah among its members, historically opposed Ghana’s independence.

“Apart from destroying the economy, one of the things this government wants to do is to rewrite our history, and we shall not allow them to rewrite our history because the president said he does not accept that one person can be the founder of our nation.”

“Nobody can come and rewrite our history. Indeed, for those of you who don’t know it, when the Queen finally agreed to give Ghana independence, the UGCC that Nana Akufo-Addo is fighting to be recognised as founders of Ghana wrote a petition. They sent people to England to tell the queen not to grant independence because we are not ready yet,” he said.

In 2019, Parliament enacted a law designating August 4 as Founders’ Day to honor all who contributed to Ghana’s path to independence. This law also established September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, specifically recognizing Nkrumah’s significant contributions.

The creation of Founders’ Day has sparked protests from some individuals and groups who argue that Nkrumah’s pivotal leadership deserves singular recognition. They contend that Dr. Nkrumah’s role in founding the country was unparalleled and should be solely acknowledged.

Mahama promises quality Free SHS in next NDC govt

Former President John Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the challenges of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy without abolishing it.

Speaking at a rally in Binduri during the first phase of his 2024 election campaign in the Upper East Region, Mahama emphasized that the policy would be maintained but with improved implementation to enhance education quality.

“Anyone claiming that JM will scrap free SHS is lying. Free SHS is here to stay, but we will enhance its implementation to ensure quality,” Mahama asserted.

The 2024 NDC Flagbearer outlined plans to invest in completing abandoned school projects and expanding existing facilities to provide the necessary infrastructure for the policy. This initiative aims to eliminate the double-track system and increase contact hours for students.

“I assure you, we will invest in and complete all abandoned E-Blocks. We will also expand current school facilities to create more access for Ghanaian children. This will help end the double-track system, so our children do not have to stay home for extended periods,” he said.

Addressing the issue of irregular food supply in secondary schools, Mahama proposed allowing headteachers to procure food locally rather than relying on the national buffer stock. This change aims to ensure quality meals for students and support local economies.

Additionally, Mahama pledged to create job opportunities for the youth if elected. He urged voters to support him and his parliamentary candidates to secure a majority in Parliament, which he said is crucial for economic transformation.

Accompanying the former President were Professor Joshua Alabi, his National Campaign Manager, Zebilla MP Cletus Avoka, Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, Binduri Parliamentary candidate Issifu Mahoud, his spokesperson Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and other party executives.

Mahama supports Bawku Naba’s request for a new region from Upper East region

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has unveiled plans to establish a new region from the Upper East Region if he is elected.

During his visit to the Bawku Naba’s palace, Mahama announced that a proposal has been submitted to the Speaker of Parliament through Bawku’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga.

Mahama argued that forming a new region would address critical issues, including the ongoing security crisis in Bawku and the creation of more job opportunities.

He pointed out that the Bawku area’s land size and population are comparable to or even exceed those of the North East Region, making a compelling case for a new region.

He stressed that the aim of creating new regions and districts is to decentralize governance and enhance security.

“I discussed something with him. Your Member of Parliament, I’m aware he has written a letter to the Speaker requesting that another region should be created out of the Upper East Region to cover the six constituencies in the Bawku area,” Mahama said.

“Bawku Naba raised it with me, and I told him in principle I think it’s a good idea for two reasons. One, for the reason of bringing government closer to the people.”

He continued, “That’s the principal reason for which we create new regions and new districts. And then the second reason is for security. Bawku is a special security zone because of the issues that have been happening here. And so it would be a good proposal to have a region so that it can be a focus to make sure that we deal with the security issues as well as we can.”

Mahama further elaborated, “And so, I don’t think it’s out of place because the criteria are dependent on population, they are dependent on land size, and they are dependent on economic viability.”

  • Akufo-Addo’s Jubilee House is the headquarters of misinformation – Mahama

Akufo-Addo’s Jubilee House is the headquarters of misinformation – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has labeled Jubilee House, the seat of government, as the “headquarters of misinformation.”

He accused the Presidency of fabricating false stories, distorting facts, and spreading these distortions via social media.

Mahama’s remarks came as a response to President Akufo-Addo’s claims that his political adversaries are running a coordinated misinformation campaign against him and the NPP.

At the Ghana Report Summit, which focused on tackling misinformation and disinformation in the forthcoming election, President Akufo-Addo cited the ‘Agyapadie‘ document, alleging it was part of an effort to tarnish his image.

However, speaking to NDC supporters in the Upper East Region, Mahama dismissed these accusations and urged President Akufo-Addo to focus on addressing misinformation emanating from his own office.

“The President condemned misinformation and cited the ‘Agyapadie’ document as an example. However, what the President might not realize is that his office, the Flagstaff House, is the headquarters of misinformation,” Mahama said.

Dr. Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections, who was also present, responded to the President’s allegations. He argued that the opposition is not responsible for any negative campaign against the government and suggested the

President reflect on the ‘Agyapadie’ document. Dr. Boamah questioned the accuracy of the document’s predictions about the President’s actions if they weren’t based on observed behavior.

He stressed that instead of blaming the opposition, the President should consider how his actions have seemingly aligned with the negative predictions in the document.

“How come I campaigned to protect the public purse? How come I campaigned to develop Ghana? Yet this document is indicating that I came only for my people and for my clan? If I were the president, I’d be more concerned,” Dr. Boamah stated.

He urged the President to reflect on why people are citing the document as evidence of his administration’s actions. “Instead of the President hastily blaming the opposition party, the President should have a sober reflection about the content of the ‘Agyapadie’ document as people are pushing out there and check how come he has fallen so low to have manifested these things in his government such that today, people who have read a document are saying that ‘ah, that is the evidence’,” he added.

Dr. Boamah also criticized the President for consistently blaming the NDC for various issues, including the country’s economic challenges.

  • I will probe 2023 military brutalities in Garu – Mahama

I will probe 2023 military brutalities in Garu – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has pledged that if he wins the 2024 elections, his administration will investigate the military brutality that occurred in Garu, Upper East Region, in 2023.

On the first day of his Upper East region tour, Mr. Mahama visited the constituencies of Bawku Central, Pusiga, Timpani, and Garu. His key messages included plans for a 24-hour economy, prioritizing peace in Bawku, and addressing other regional concerns.

During his visit to the Garu constituency, Mr. Mahama emphasized the NDC’s commitment to justice and accountability. The October 2023 incident resulted in the death of one person after soldiers responded violently to an attack on National Security operatives by a vigilante group.

Mr. Mahama assured that, if elected, he would ensure justice for the victims of the Garu incident. He presented a monetary donation to the widow of one of the victims.

“There was an incident where some of our people were brutalized and one was killed. He left a wife and children. This evening, I gave a small donation to be given to his wife to look after the children, but when we come into government, we will conduct an inquiry into it so that it doesn’t happen again,” he said.

“We must learn the lessons from what happened so that tomorrow it will not repeat itself. And so when we come, we will do an inquiry. The most important thing for us when we come into office is peace in Bawku,“ he added.

Additionally, Mr. Mahama proposed building dormitory blocks for senior high schools with large catchment areas to help students who struggle with daily commutes.

“Our policy is that for the community day schools that have a big catchment area where the students cannot commute daily, we will build dormitory blocks so that the students can stay in the school,” he said.

He also promised to complete the Eastern Corridor Road to improve access between the Northern and Southern parts of the country.

“If you have to go down south, it is the shortest and fastest way to go to Accra. So I can assure you that when we come, the Eastern Corridor will be one of our priorities. I know the economy is in a mess, but we are going to prioritize so that it is a project that we can achieve in the shortest possible time.”

At the palace of the chief of Pusiga, Mr. Mahama vowed to eliminate secret recruitment practices in state security agencies.

“In Ghana, we have one policeman to almost 1,000 people. So it means that there is space for us to recruit more police officers, and we’re not going to do secret recruitment like these people are doing. They don’t advertise, and before you know it, people are training. They pick their own favorites and are training them, and all the other youth don’t get the opportunity. This time, when we’re going to recruit, we will bring the recruiters here to your region. So you don’t have to travel to Accra or anywhere,” he said.

  • NPP’s DRIP initiative was launched by Mahama in 2016 – Dep. Minority Whip

NPP’s DRIP initiative was launched by Mahama in 2016 – Dep. Minority Whip

The recently launched District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) by President Akufo-Addo has sparked a political controversy, with claims from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the initiative was originally introduced by former President John Mahama in 2016.

Deputy Minority Whip and NDC MP for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim, stated in an interview on Okay FM that the DRIP project was initiated by Mahama, but its progress was hindered by administrative decisions.

“This DRIP project was something that President Mahama launched in July 2016. President Mahama’s problem was that he dissolved the Ministry of Information and combined it with the Ministry of Communication. So, there were a lot of things that he did but were not communicated,” Ibrahim said.

Responding to these claims on X, former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho, criticized the party’s leadership for attempting to attribute the DRIP initiative to Mahama. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the narrative being pushed by some members of the NDC.

In one of his posts, Anyidoho remarked, “Desperation is NOT good ooo!!! Listen to how this JM puppet attempts to steal the DRIP Initiative for his boss but ends up indicting the policy of merging the Information & Communications Ministries. This is a BIG indictment on JM that’s why he must have a DEBATE with DMB.”

He further added, “What is happening to my NDC? This is shocking!!! They are now saying that the DRIP Initiative was started by JM. In one breath, the NPP Govt is doing nothing; in another breath, all the NPP projects are JM’s projects. Soon, they will say JM created the world. Haba!”

President Akufo-Addo officially launched the DRIP at Independence Square on July 31, 2024.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, aims to address the critical issue of deteriorating road conditions across the country’s 275 constituencies, which the National Security Ministry has flagged as a major national security concern.

  • “In the Akufo-Addo/Mahama era” – President mistakenly adds NDC opposition leader to his gov’t

“In the Akufo-Addo/Mahama era” – President mistakenly adds NDC opposition leader to his gov’t

President Akufo-Addo caused a brief stir at the launch of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) on Wednesday when he mistakenly included opposition leader John Mahama in his administration.

The DRIP initiative, primarily funded by the District Assembly Common Fund, aims to repair and improve deplorable roads across the country. During his address to dignitaries at the launch, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the program as evidence of his administration’s dedication to enhancing Ghana’s road infrastructure.

However, his speech took an unexpected turn when he ventured into political comparisons, attempting to illustrate how the NPP administration had outperformed the opposition in terms of kilometers of roads constructed, compared to the previous Mahama era.

In a slip of the tongue, the President mistakenly referred to his administration as the “Akufo-Addo/Mahama… Bawumia era,” quickly realizing his error and adding, “That is unforgivable.”

This gaffe caused a brief uproar among the audience, prompting the President to retract his statement.

Despite the momentary confusion, the event proceeded smoothly, focusing on the importance of the District Road Improvement Programme in enhancing the country’s infrastructure.

  • I will review Ghana’s deal with IMF when I become President – Mahama

I will review Ghana’s deal with IMF when I become President – Mahama

Former President John Mahama plans to renegotiate the terms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout and increase local ownership of future oil and mining projects if he wins the upcoming December election.

Mahama, who served from 2012 to 2016, will challenge the ruling party’s candidate, Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia, and has a strong chance of success due to the current severe economic crisis.

Having previously managed an IMF program during his presidency, Mahama, 65, believes the IMF is open to discussions and renegotiations.

“I’ve been in an IMF programme before when I was president, and I know that the IMF is not averse to sitting and talking and renegotiating issues,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Ghana defaulted on most of its $30 billion external debt in 2022, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine war, and rising global interest rates.

The country secured a $3 billion IMF bailout in May 2023 and restructured its debts, with repayments frozen until 2025. The IMF has already disbursed $1.56 billion, with an additional $360 million expected by December. Mahama plans to seek further IMF funds to aid in resuming debt repayments.

Mahama intends to amend the public finance management law to enforce a debt-to-GDP ceiling of 60-70% to prevent excessive borrowing.

Additionally, he aims to respect existing production contracts without raising taxes, instead focusing on obtaining higher royalties from future projects. “I think we are at the upper range of taxes on profit … But I do think that in some cases the level at which we locked in the royalties is low,” he noted.

He also envisions higher government stakes in future projects through the Minerals Income and Investment Fund, a sovereign wealth facility.

Mahama ascended to the presidency in 2012 following the death of John Evans Atta-Mills and won his own mandate later that year.

He lost the 2016 and 2020 elections to Nana Akufo-Addo, who is stepping down after two terms. Mahama’s tenure saw significant infrastructure investments but faced criticism for power shortages, economic instability, and allegations of political corruption, although he was not personally implicated. Critics argue these issues have persisted or worsened under Akufo-Addo.

Both Mahama and Bawumia hail from northern Ghana, where the NDC has traditionally been strong but where the NPP has gained ground. Abdul-Wakil Neindow, a 30-year-old who lost his construction job in 2017, expressed the frustrations of many Ghanaians at Mahama’s campaign launch: “We the youth are hopeless, we don’t have jobs. How to eat, pay bills and feed our families is very hard.”

Ghana, known for its stable democracy and peaceful power transitions, has never seen a party win more than two consecutive terms.

The last election faced opposition accusations of government influence, which were denied. Mahama has urged his supporters to remain vigilant against vote-rigging by staying awake for 48 hours after voting.

  • You’ll have no choice but to hand over if Ghanaians elect me – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

You’ll have no choice but to hand over if Ghanaians elect me – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has declared that it is not within President Akufo-Addo’s purview to determine his successor following the upcoming general elections.

Mahama stressed that the president must transfer power to whoever the people of Ghana choose.

This declaration comes in light of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s strong stance against transferring the presidency to Mahama.

Addressing the Central Regional House of Chiefs on July 30, after introducing his running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama reiterated that Akufo-Addo would have no option but to hand over to him if he emerges victorious in the forthcoming election.

Mahama emphasized his faith in the democratic process and his readiness to lead if elected.

“Please tell [President Akufo-Addo], it is not in his mouth to determine who he will hand over to.”

“He should just promise that when the elections are held, whoever wins he will hand over to. But you can’t say you won’t hand over to John Mahama if the people of Ghana say John Mahama is who they want and they elect me, you will have to hand over to me,” he stated.

Earlier, President Akufo-Addo, while addressing the chiefs and people of Wa, expressed his gratitude for their support during his tenure. He informed the Paramount Chief of the Waala traditional area, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, of his intention to return with the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as his preferred successor.

  • AG Dame sometimes forgets he is the Minister for Justice, behaving like NPP’s lawyer – Mahama

AG Dame sometimes forgets he is the Minister for Justice, behaving like NPP’s lawyer – Mahama

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Godfred Dame, accusing him of acting more like a legal representative for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) than fulfilling his duties impartially.

Mahama emphasized the dual role of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, suggesting that Dame forgets his responsibility to ensure fairness.

“So I think that the A-G is also the Minister of Justice, he forgets that and thinks he is just the A-G. The Minister of Justice is supposed to ensure fairness. Anywhere else in this world, this case would have ended, he would never even have come to court,” he concluded.

In an interview with TV3 on Tuesday, July 30, following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge the accused in the ambulance procurement case, Mahama expressed his concerns about Dame’s credibility.

“I think that this Attorney-General has been discredited enough, anywhere in the world, with the things we have seen, the coaching of witnesses, and discussions with witnesses, this prosecution would have been struck out as malicious prosecution,” he said.

“I believe this prosecution is malicious. He is not as robust and energetic in pursuing other cases. Even as we speak, there is an ambulance case involving this present administration which is hugely larger than what he is prosecuting, and yet he has no interest in that.”

Mahama further accused Dame of being overly enthusiastic in pursuing political opponents.

“He is like a legal representative of the NPP party, over-enthusiastic in pursuing political opponents. I have said that when we come it will be the reverse. We will pursue accountability for the regime that has gone out but at the same time if any of our people are involved in the same things that have happened, we are prosecuting the previous government, and we will prosecute them too.”

The traditional authorities in the Central Region poured libation for John Dramani Mahama and his running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

This ceremonial act took place during Mahama’s introduction of Prof Opoku-Agyemang to the chiefs at the regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, July 30.

During the event, Mahama highlighted Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s impressive qualities and extensive experience, underscoring her significant contributions as the former Minister of Education.

He praised her dedication to public service and her commitment to improving the education sector.

“Prof Naana Jane is a leader who possesses high moral values, she is incorruptible,” Mahama stated. “All through her service to Ghana she remained committed and patriotic, she comes with wisdom, tact, integrity, and decades of experience to the vice presidential office.”

He emphasized that her inclusion as his running mate would enhance the effectiveness of the vice presidency if the NDC wins the upcoming elections.

The introduction aimed to garner support from the regional chiefs and showcase the strength of the NDC’s leadership team. Mahama’s endorsement of Prof Opoku-Agyemang reflects his confidence in her ability to significantly contribute to the party’s goals and the nation’s development.

The chiefs’ act of pouring libation was a symbolic gesture, praying for divine intervention to remove all obstacles in the NDC’s path to reclaim power in 2025.

Ato Forson’s acquittal in ambulance case highlights political persecution – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has praised the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in the ambulance procurement case.

He stated that this outcome strengthens his belief that the trial, led by Attorney General Godfred Dame, was politically motivated.

This follows the acquittal and discharge of the third accused, Richard Jakpa, and Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, who were previously charged with causing financial loss to the state.

Describing it as good news, he explained that “this is a victory for the rule of law and confirms my long-held view that the whole case was political persecution.”

The appeal was filed some time ago after the High Court dismissed a no-case petition.

The former President expressed his pleasant surprise at the verdict, viewing it as evidence that justice still prevails in the country.

“It shows that we still have justice in this country, and we can work to make the judiciary what we want it to be,” Mr Mahama stated in a social media post.

He reiterated his dedication to judicial reforms, promising to appoint an impartial Minister for Justice.

“I pledge to appoint a fair minded Minister for Justice who will work with the legal fraternity and the Judicial Council to carry out reforms to ensure we have a truly independent judiciary we can all be proud of.”

Mahama’s 24-hour economy plan could resolve Ghana’s economic crisis

The Minority in Parliament has declared that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is proposing a 24-hour economy plan to address the economic difficulties caused by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The caucus contends that the Akufo-Addo administration’s irresponsible borrowing has increased Ghana’s debt to over GHC740 billion without yielding significant results.

Eric Opoku, Ranking Member of the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee, highlighted the seriousness of the issue during a recent press conference.

“We have been reckless and irresponsible in the last seven years in our borrowing as a nation. From March 6, 1957, to January 7, 2017, Ghana was 60 years old, and our total debt was GHC120 billion.”

“Now, within the last seven years, we have increased our debt stock to GHC742 billion. This indicates that in the last seven years, we have borrowed GHC622 billion, unprecedented in the history of our country,” Mr. Opoku stated.

He emphasized that the NDC’s 24-hour economy plan is the necessary remedy for the current economic turmoil.

“To get us out of this mess, what we have to do is work hard.”

“We used to work for 8 hours. What we’re saying is that we’re not going to rest for the remaining 16 hours. Let’s make economic use of all these hours,” Mr. Opoku explained.

46 promises of Mahama he didn’t fulfil after winning 2012 elections – Report

Former President John Mahama’s past unfulfilled “lavish campaign promises” have resurfaced following the official launch of his 2024 presidential campaign over the weekend.

Mahama, who served as Vice President from 2009 to 2012 and President from 2012 to 2017, is making another attempt to regain the presidency after losing in 2016 and failing to win in 2020.

Despite the grand promises made during his campaign launch, Mahama’s track record of unfulfilled promises has come under scrutiny.

Abdul Razak Yando, a political scientist, questioned Mahama’s sincerity in an open article copied to Ghanaguardian.com.

Yando highlighted Mahama’s history of making numerous political promises without delivering on them when in office, casting doubt on his current campaign commitments.

“As Mahama has launched his campaign, laced with promises, it is important to interrogate how he fared the last time heade juicy promises to Ghanaians and was given the opportunity to lead the country between 2012 and 2016,” Abdul Razak Yando wrote.

“It is important for questions to be asked of the former President, especially for young voters who have just turned 18 years, to know how the only former President who will be on the ballot in the 2024 elections, performed when they were 12 years, as far as some major promises he made to the country are concerned.”

” Unfortunately, a detailed analysis of former President Mahama’s 2012 Manifesto, revealed that the former President, after being elected as President, did not fulfil many lavish promises,” continued the political analyst.

“As many as 46 big promises made by John Mahama during the 2012 elections were not fulfilled after Ghanaians voted for him as President,” he said in the article, and provided a list of all the 46 failed promises.

EXPOSING 46 ‘CAMPAIGN LIES’ OF JOHN MAHAMA AS PRESIDENT, FOLLOWING THE LAUNCH OF ANOTHER CAMPAIGN

By Abdul Razak Yando (Political Scientist)

Former President John Dramani Mahama will be appearing as Presidential Candidate for the NDC, once again, in December 2024, as Ghana goes to the polls to choose a President.

Mahama, following the completion of late President Mills’ remaining six months as President, as well as his own full term from 2013 to 2017, will be the only former President on the ballot, seeking to be voted for again as President.

What this means is that Mahama, as a former President who has led this country before, has a history and a record as President, as far as campaign promises and delivering those promises are concerned.

Prior to his election in 2012 as President, Mahama made promises and also presented a manifesto to the people of Ghana, titled “advancing the better Ghana agenda,” to woo Ghanaians to vote for him.

Majority of Ghanaians, perhaps, were wooed by the sweet promises of John Mahama in 2012 and voted for him to be Ghana’s 4th President of the 4th Republic from 2012 to 2017.

Last Saturday in Tamale, the former President launched another campaign, seeking to win the votes of Ghanaians to return to the Presidency, after he lost power in 2016 and failed at the polls again in 2020. The campaign launch, unsurprisingly, was full of yet another promises by the former President and his party officials, many of whom served in his erstwhile government.

As Mahama has launched his campaign, laced with promises, it is important to interrogate how he fared the last time he made juicy promises to Ghanaians and was given the opportunity to lead the country between 2012 and 2017.

It is important for questions to be asked of the former President, especially for young voters who have just turned 18 years and are eligible to vote, to know how the only former President who will be on the ballot in the 2024 elections, performed when they were 12 years, as far as some major promises he made to the country are concerned.

To intensely interrogate John Mahama’s history on making promises and fulfilling same or otherwise, is essential in taking what he is promising now seriously or not.

Unfortunately, a detailed analysis of former President Mahama’s 2012 Manifesto, revealed that the former President, after being elected as President, did not fulfil many lavish promises he made to the people of Ghana in many sectors.

As many as 46 major promises made by John Mahama during the 2012 elections were not fulfilled after Ghanaians voted for him as President.

Below are the 46 unfulfilled promises by John Mahama as President of Ghana. You may call them lies or deception by Mahama, but the fact is that he made these lavish promises, but he failed to fulfill or achieve them as President.

Interestingly, as President, Mahama had 4 years, or 1460 days to fulfill these promises, but he could not, until he heavily lost the 2016 election.

Here they are, the promises, as contained in the 2012 NDC Manifesto, which is publicly available for scrutiny.

Frante accident victims get 75-horsepower agricultural tractor from Mahama

Former President John Mahama has donated a 75-horsepower agricultural tractor to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were involved in a tragic accident in Frante, within the Ejura Sekyeredumase municipality.

Alhaji Mohammed Limuna Muniru, the former Agriculture Minister under the NDC administration, handed over the tractor to the Chief of Frante on behalf of Mahama. The donation is intended to aid the farming activities and income generation for the accident victims, with additional support promised for their recovery and rehabilitation.

The road accident on November 21, 2020, claimed several lives and left many severely injured as NDC supporters were heading to a rally in Ejura. Survivors, including the Branch Chairman, suffered life-altering injuries, with some undergoing limb amputations.

Yakubu Adam, a survivor who lost his right arm in the accident, recounted the harrowing experience but expressed gratitude for the NDC’s ongoing support. “It was terrible, but it is better now than before. The NDC party has been supportive over the years and we are grateful,” Yakubu said.

Another survivor, Rashida Forkor, reflected on her challenging journey over the past four years, highlighting the consistent support from the party, including financial aid from former President Mahama and continuous assistance from the local MP.

“Former President Mahama provided financial support when he visited, and our MP has always helped us whenever we needed him,” she said.

Akua Alhassan, who also suffered severe injuries, including the loss of her teeth and a fractured right hand, expressed her appreciation for the party’s unwavering support. She noted that the party’s loyalty has been a significant source of comfort and relief.

The tractor donation brings hope and relief to the survivors and the families of the deceased, helping to alleviate some of the physical and financial burdens they face, and aiding in their journey towards regaining independence and normalcy.

Alhaji Mohammed Limuna Muniru explained that the donation embodies a philosophy of empowerment, providing the accident survivors with a sustainable means of livelihood rather than just temporary relief.

Mohammed Braimah Bawa, the Member of Parliament for Ejura Sekyeredumase, expressed optimism that the tractor would have a positive impact on the victims’ lives, bringing tangible benefits and improvements to their well-being.

The Chief of Frante, Nana Owusu Sekyere Bobo III, praised former President Mahama for his generous donation and encouraged him to continue his benevolent support, acknowledging the significant impact the tractor would have on the lives of the accident victims and their families.

Video: How doctors demonstrated against Mahama in 2015 over 11 months unpaid salaries

Nine years ago, armed police officers surrounded the offices of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) to prevent a group of Ghanaian junior doctors from protesting the non-payment of their salaries for 11 months.

The junior doctors asserted that they were merely at the CAGD to submit the necessary documents for salary processing.

DSP Freeman Kumashie, Greater Accra Regional Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, labeled the gathering as unlawful and indicated that the police were poised to charge the group’s leaders with unlawful assembly.

However, Dr. Nana Kissi Ataffuah, the group’s spokesperson, criticized the police’s actions, insisting that the gathering was not a protest.

“We are not demonstrating or acting violently. We are angry but not violent. We just want to present our documents to get paid. We are tired and hungry,” he told local radio station Peace FM.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) declared its support for the junior doctors nationwide. GMA President Dr. Kwabena Adusei Poku questioned the government’s expectations of unpaid doctors and highlighted that the doctors had completed all necessary requirements, including biometric registration, yet remained unpaid.

Dr. Adusei Poku lamented that the government only acted after the doctors went on strike.

Then-Finance Minister Seth Terkper, addressing the issue on local media, promised that the doctors would receive their 11 months’ salary arrears within two weeks. He attributed the delay to the existing remuneration system but assured that steps were being taken to resolve the problem.

Mr Terkper explained that automating all public sector paper applications, such as those for leave, transfer, payment, and employment, was underway. He detailed that the current system required 30 months for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to enter the young doctors’ personal data into the government’s payroll system, due to the manual process involved.

“The process begins at the district level, moves to the regional level, and finally to the national level before it interfaces with the payroll, causing the delay,” Terkper explained.

The doctors, however, were unconvinced by the explanation and assurance, deeming the proposed two-week period too long.

This issue has resurfaced after pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist @Gen_Buhari raised concerns about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) being a viable alternative to the current government.

The pro-NPP page asserts that the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, cannot lead the country again.

During the launch, party supporters heard from various speakers about the NDC’s plans to tackle the country’s pressing issues and chart a clear path for the future.

Media personality Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) has voiced his belief that John Mahama’s 24-hour economy plan will create decent jobs for Ghanaian youth across various sectors.

Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign launch in Tamale, Northern Region, KOD endorsed Mahama, praising his leadership, vision, and commitment to the country’s young people.

He underscored the urgent necessity for a change in government to tackle the nation’s issues.

Recalling Mahama’s political journey, he added, “before the turn of the last millennium, we saw him in 1996, serving his people in Bole Bamboi, I endorse President Mahama because he embodies the leadership and vision our country needs at this crucial time in our history,

KOD also lauded Mahama’s focus on youth and job creation, emphasizing his comprehensive economic strategies.

He encouraged young people to engage actively in the electoral process, highlighting their crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.

“I am confident that the John Mahama 24-hour economy will create decent jobs for the youth in all sectors, including the creative arts and hospitality industries. Even exciting is his promise to train one million Ghanaian youth and invest three million in ICT to create 300,000 more jobs,” he added.

KOD concluded by addressing the youth directly, “Is this the life you want? Reach out to your friends, everyone above 18, and turn out in numbers on December 7th to vote. Your participation is key to elevating this country to the next level.”

Ghana’s youth don’t have four years to waste – Mahama tells Bawumia

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has strongly criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for seeking to extend the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 8-year governance.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to spend another four years under the New Patriotic Party’s government through Dr. Bawumia’s unproven leadership.

Mahama emphasized the need for experienced and effective leadership to generate opportunities and spur national development.

He condemned Dr. Bawumia’s involvement in the current administration, which he accused of economic mismanagement. According to Mahama, the economic hardships Ghanaians are experiencing stem from poor leadership and decision-making by the current government.

The former President asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s track record does not justify giving him a chance to lead the country. He called on the electorate to evaluate the candidates’ past performances and make a well-informed decision for the nation’s benefit.

“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he declared.

Mahama emphasized that the youth are seeking experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting his own leadership would be more beneficial for the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change direction on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.

“On December 7, Ghana must change course, we cannot solve the crisis in which we are with the same people who caused the problem. Several years ago, somebody [President Akufo-Addo] came and said try me, the result is what we’re seeing today. Today, another person [Dr Bawumia] has come and he’s also saying try me.

“And he’s saying the same things the one who has put us in this ditch said eight years ago. And what they are saying is that if they don’t deliver after four years, change me.”

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has sharply criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid for the presidency in the 2024 general elections.

During the launch of the NDC’s campaign on Saturday, July 27, in Tamale, Mahama argued that Ghana’s youth cannot afford to risk another four years on Dr. Bawumia’s untested leadership.

Mahama highlighted the need for experienced and effective leadership to create opportunities and drive national development.

He criticized Dr. Bawumia for his role in the current administration, which he blamed for mismanaging the economy. Mahama attributed the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians to poor leadership and decision-making under the current government.

The former President argued that Dr. Bawumia’s performance thus far does not merit an opportunity to lead the country.

He urged voters to scrutinize the track records of the candidates and make an informed decision that would benefit the nation.

Mahama stressed that the youth are demanding experienced leadership to create real opportunities for them, suggesting that his own leadership would better serve the country’s future. He urged Ghanaians to change course on December 7 and avoid repeating past mistakes.

“The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand,” he stated.

Kofi Okyere Darko, widely known as KOD, has officially thrown his support behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on July 27, the Ghanaian broadcaster and fashion designer described Mahama as the revitalizing change Ghanaians have been eagerly awaiting.

“Today, I stand in front of you as Ghanaians with the strong conviction that we need that change that we have been yearning for, and that is why I stand today to endorse His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the next President of the Republic of Ghana,” he declared.

KOD praised Mahama as a visionary leader capable of propelling Ghana to new heights. He highlighted Mahama’s policies as commendable and reflective of the solutions needed to address the country’s issues.

He also urged the youth to rally behind Mahama, citing the widespread discontent and burden felt across the nation.

In September 2023, KOD announced his intention to vote for the NDC in the upcoming 2024 general election. Previously a supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he had actively campaigned for the party in 2007 and 2015.

However, he expressed disappointment in the NPP’s failure to fulfill their promises, leading to his shift in support to Mahama and the NDC.

NDC will protect your votes, we won’t sleep for 48 hours – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, has urged party members to stay vigilant and ensure that every ballot is counted by the Electoral Commission (EC) during the 2024 general elections.

He said this at the launch of the National Democratic Congress campaign in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, 2024.

Mahama emphasized the necessity for supporters to safeguard the ballot boxes throughout Election Day.

Addressing the gathering, Mahama stressed the significance of overseeing every step of the electoral process to prevent any attempts of rigging that might favor the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He assured Ghanaians that a massive turnout in his favor would be matched by the party’s commitment to securing their votes.

Highlighting the measures the NDC has put in place, Mahama expressed confidence that the party is well-prepared to ensure the genuine will of the people is reflected in the election results. He urged NDC supporters to actively protect each vote to guarantee a fair election.

“Prepare yourselves; we’re not going to rest for 48 hours until every single ballot is counted. We will protect every single vote,” Mahama declared. He also noted, “Despite our past issues with the Electoral Commission, we are ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

In addition to Mahama’s call to action, the NDC campaign launch featured several key figures within the party.

The event showcased a united front, with speeches from party executives and endorsements from prominent NDC members.

The launch also outlined the party’s strategic plans and policy proposals aimed at addressing Ghana’s current challenges, including economic recovery, job creation, and social welfare improvements.

According to the party, the venue of the launch of the manifesto next month will be the Central Region.

At the event with saw about thousands of supporters, the flagbearer of the NDC, former President John Mahama, berated the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for worsening the plight of Ghanaians and doing close to nothing to develop the economy.

He described the incumbent administration led by President Akufo-Addo as “useless” and further chided the president for being dishonest with the Ghanaian populace.

Mr Mahama therefore entreated electorates to give the NDC another chance to rectify the wrongs made by the NPP government.

He admitted that his previous government was not perfect, but assured that he, together with his “capable men and women”, will learn from their mistakes and salvage the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has entreated President Akufo-Addo to ensure the country’s next polls is peaceful, fair and transparent.

Mahama said Free SHS priority was not his priority – Bawumia

Vice President and the 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) program in Ghana, particularly in the northern regions, would not have been realized if former President John Mahama had remained in office.

Speaking at a rally in Jirapa during his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the transformative effect the Free SHS initiative has had on many families in the north since its launch in 2017.

He criticized former President Mahama for opposing the program despite his experience and suggested that Mahama’s lack of support showed a disconnect from the needs of the people.

Dr. Bawumia challenged Mahama’s record on social interventions, stating, “Former President Mahama said if he had the money, he wouldn’t use it for free SHS education. He said it was not a priority but we have brought it and the people of the north and Ghanaians are benefiting.”

He highlighted the significant increase in senior high school enrollment from 800,000 to 1.4 million over seven years, underscoring the demand for the Free SHS program.

“We knew, and I knew that where we had the poorest people in the north, we needed Free SHS education and we brought free SHS to the north and Ghana and our children are attending in their numbers. The total enrollment for senior high school has increased from 800,000 to 1.4 million in 7 years. It tells you that our people were dying for free SHS education.”

“Today, the five northern regions have the highest enrollment into senior high school education. But this is what John Mahama said we should not do. He said if he had the money, he would not do it,” he added.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia criticized the Savannah Development Authority (SADA) established under Mahama’s administration, accusing it of being ineffective.

“Mahama set up SADA and claimed to invest millions, but there are no tangible results. I’ve challenged him to present any successful SADA project, but none have been shown.”

In contrast, Dr. Bawumia defended his record as Vice President, claiming that he has spearheaded numerous policies and development projects that have visibly improved conditions in the north and across Ghana.

Bukom Banku ‘betrays’ Mahama, endorses Alan

Ghanaian boxer Braimah Kamoko, widely known as Bukom Banku, has recently endorsed Alan Kyeremanten, leader of the Movement for Change party and an Independent Presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections.

The endorsement came during a high-profile event where Bukom Banku was seen engaging in a mock boxing match with Alan Kyeremanten, affectionately known as Alan Cash.

In a light-hearted yet symbolic bout, Alan Cash managed to knock out Bukom Banku, adding an unexpected flair to the occasion.

Following their playful encounter, Bukom Banku took the stage to deliver a brief speech in which he praised Alan Kyeremanten’s vision for Ghana.

The endorsement has taken many by surprise, especially given Bukom Banku’s earlier public support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Mahama.

Earlier this year, a viral video featured Bukom Banku urging Ghanaian voters to back John Mahama.

The boxer’s sudden change in endorsement has sparked widespread speculation and curiosity about his motivations and the factors influencing his political stance.

Video: The moment a Rev. introduces Mahama as NPP flagbearer

The 12th-anniversary wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service for the late former President John Evans Atta Mills witnessed a hilarious moment when a reverend pastor misidentified former President Mahama.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, who was seated with the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and his running mate of former Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang was being introduced to the audience when the unexpected happened.

The man of God failed to capture the party the statesman belonged to and introduced Mahama as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Before completing his sentence, he received chants from the audience, which prompted him to correct his error. He apologised to Mahama with a bow and urged the audience not to confuse him.

Anyidoho is playing a ‘buffoonery’ due to his hatred for Mahama – Vanderpuye

Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has voiced his disappointment over the disruption that occurred during the memorial service for the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at Asomdwee Park on Wednesday, July 24.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Vanderpuye described the incident as “unwarranted” and expressed his dismay at the confusion that arose after former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, exceeded his allotted speaking time. This delay affected the subsequent event organized by the NDC and the JEA Mills Memorial Heritage.

Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie, the sister of the late President, condemned Anyidoho’s actions, stating that he would face consequences for his behavior.

Vanderpuye placed the blame on the government for allowing the incident to happen and criticized Anyidoho’s conduct, attributing it to arrogance and animosity towards NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

“You see, you and I all agree, even though in Ghana, we value the extended family system. There’s always the immediate family or the nuclear family. So as to dispute about whose family or who has the right to somebody, it cannot be questioned because the first point of call is the immediate or the nuclear family before you go to the extended family,” Vanderpuye explained.

He continued, “So what happened was uncalled-for, unwarranted and unexpected, but I will put it all at the doorstep of the government which is allowing this ‘buffoon’ of a guy called Anyidoho… the way he’s behaving, he’s playing a ‘buffoonery’.”

Vanderpuye further criticized Anyidoho’s lack of humility, stating, “His arrogance and ego, he doesn’t have the humility that is supposed to be exhibited by anybody who worked under President Mills. All he’s doing is nothing, it’s about his hatred for President Mahama, it is nothing else.”

He claimed that Anyidoho’s actions were intended to disrupt the event and undermine the presence of President Mahama and the NDC’s national executives. “All that he tried was to do something to disrupt the programme he knew President Mahama and the NDC, the national executives were going to be present,” Vanderpuye asserted.

This incident has sparked significant controversy, highlighting the tensions within the NDC and the broader political landscape in Ghana.

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, attended the 12th anniversary wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service for the late Prof. Atta Mills at Asomdwee Park in Accra.

The event provided an opportunity for Ghanaians from various walks of life to honor and reflect on Prof. Mills’ legacy.

Notable attendees included Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, and Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC Chairman, underscoring the importance of the ceremony.

A video from UTV captured Mahama arriving in a sleek black Toyota convoy, accompanied by a dispatch rider and security personnel. He was seen mingling with fellow NDC officials and other guests.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was spotted engaged in lively conversations with senior party members and Kofi Sam Atta Mills, the late President’s son.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, dressed in a black political suit, received a warm welcome from the crowd.

An experienced driver can’t debate a driver’s mate – Ato Forson tells Bawumia

The Minority in Parliament has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, over his recent challenge to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, for a debate ahead of the December elections.

The Majority caucus on Wednesday, July 24, supported the call for Mr. Mahama to accept Dr. Bawumia’s debate invitation, arguing that such a debate would provide Ghanaians with a chance to compare the two parties and assess who is better suited to manage the economy.

However, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, dismissed the idea, asserting that a “driver’s mate” [referring to Bawumia] was not qualified to debate an experienced driver [Mahama].

He suggested that the Vice President should first debate the caucus’ spokespersons on the economy and budget before considering a debate with the former president.

Dr. Ato Forson emphasized that Dr. Bawumia lacks the experience to match Mr. Mahama, making a debate unnecessary at this time. According to him, the disparity in experience between the two politicians is too significant to justify a direct debate.

“Mr. Speaker, monkeys they say play by sizes. Mr. Speaker, how can a driver’s mate debate an experienced driver? Mr. Speaker, in this house, the spokesperson for the minority on the issues of finance is Honourable Adongo. The spokesperson for the minority for the issues of the economy is Honourable Kwaku Ricketts Hagan and the spokesperson for the budget for the minority is Honourable Ampem Darko.”

“Mr. Speaker, we all know that the Chairman of the Economic Management Team is the Vice President, so the Vice President can only debate Honourable Adongo. He should debate Honourable Adongo or debate Honourable Ricketts Hagan.”

“A driver’s mate cannot debate an experienced driver. Mr. Speaker that is the fact. So, we throw the challenge, he should debate Honourable Adongo first, Honourable Ampem second, Honourable Ricketts Hagan third before he considers debating former president John Mahama,” he insisted.

  • Is John Mahama seriously sick?

    Is John Mahama seriously sick?

The Comrades Coalition, a prominent faction within Ghanaian political circles, has sparked a heated debate by requesting former President John Dramani Mahama to step down from his political ambitions.

In a provocative letter addressed to Mahama, the group expressed concerns about his health and suitability for leadership.

The letter, penned by the coalition’s executive chair, NewTown Abeiku Hagan, draws a parallel between Mahama’s situation and recent events involving U.S. President Joe Biden.

The coalition argues that Mahama’s health has been a topic of growing concern and suggests that he may not be in optimal condition to govern the country effectively.

“It is no secret that your health has been a topic of concern, and it is evident that you are not in the best physical condition to lead our nation. Just as Joe Biden made the selfless decision to prioritize the well-being of his country over his personal ambitions, I urge you to consider doing the same,” the letter states.

The group advocates for Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate, to take over the leadership role. They assert that Opoku Agyemang possesses the skills and capability needed to guide the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to success, implying that her leadership would be beneficial for the party.

The request has ignited significant debate within Ghana’s political sphere, especially among NDC supporters. The comparison to Joe Biden’s circumstances and the emphasis on Opoku Agyemang’s qualifications add layers to the discussion about leadership and succession within the party.

Mahama’s health and political future are now under scrutiny, with this move prompting discussions about the potential impact on the NDC and Ghanaian politics at large.

The statesman is yet to react to these concerns.

A faction known as the Comrades Coalition has made a contentious request for former president John Dramani Mahama to step down from his political aspirations.

In a letter penned by the group’s executive chair, NewTown Abeiku Hagan, they compare Mahama’s situation to recent occurrences in the United States involving Joe Biden.

The coalition expresses worries about Mahama’s health, arguing that he is not in peak physical condition to govern the country.

“It is no secret that your health has been a topic of concern, and it is evident that you are not in the best physical condition to lead our nation. Just as Joe Biden made the selfless decision to prioritize the well-being of his country over his personal ambitions, l urge you to consider doing the same,” a part of the statement indicated.

They suggest that Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate, is fully capable of steering the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to success.

The letter appeals to Mahama’s leadership qualities and humility, urging him to place the party’s success above his personal ambitions. This request for Mahama to step down has probably sparked debate within Ghana’s political sphere, especially among NDC supporters.

The comparison to Joe Biden’s scenario and the focus on Opoku Agyemang’s qualifications add complexity to the ongoing discourse on leadership and succession in Ghanaian politics.

You snatched the steering wheel and crushed the bus – Anyidoho tells Mahama

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has accused the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, of mismanaging the economy during his presidency from 2012 to 2016.

In a post on the X platform on July 20, Mr. Anyidoho figuratively alleged that Mr. Mahama “snatched” the authority to lead from the late Professor Atta Mills, whom he referred to as the “driver.” Using a metaphor, he likened the Ghanaian economy to a ‘Yutong bus,’ claiming that the former president “killed passengers,” implying harm to citizens, leading to his defeat in the 2016 general elections.

“Your license revoked by the people,” he wrote, suggesting that Mahama was removed from office by the electorate.

Mr. Anyidoho also criticized John Mahama for failing to accept the challenge from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to debate the economy. He argued that such a debate would help enlighten the populace on their respective agendas for the country’s development.

According to Mr. Anyidoho, Mr. Mahama is not prepared or fit to govern the country should he be given a second term. “A mate says he is ready for a driving test with you for the people to determine who is fit to drive the bus – you aren’t ready for a test. No way!”

Gov’t lands were sold under Kufuor, Mills, Mahama administrations; I have prove – Samuel Jinapor

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor claims to have evidence to prove that the sale of government lands occurred under previous administrations, including those of Presidents Kufuor, Mills, and Mahama.

Mr Jinapor made this revelation while addressing concerns over recent land transactions and the current administration’s handling of the issue.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on July 20, 2024, Jinapor emphasized that the problem of state land sales is not unique to the Akufo-Addo government.

He stated, “I have a litany of land sales in Cantonments, Ridge, Roman Ridge, Airport, and Labone, which were sold under President Mahama’s administration, as well as under Presidents Kufuor, Mills, and Rawlings.”

He argued that focusing on which administration sold what land only serves to distract from addressing the systemic issues that have plagued successive governments.

Mr Jinapor criticized the practice of politicizing the sale of state lands, stressing that such debates do not contribute to finding effective solutions.

“We lose the benefit of the discussion if we situate it in a narrow, self-serving political context,” he said. “If we get into a cycle of finger-pointing, we’ll lose the essence of this discussion.”

His comments are a response to ongoing criticisms, particularly from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has accused the current administration of engaging in state capture through land sales.

Mr Jinapor refuted these claims, highlighting that the Akufo-Addo government is actively working to resolve the issue rather than exacerbate it.

NDC, NPP will find it difficult garnering 52% of total votes cast – Anyaa-Sowutuom MP

Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has voiced his skepticism regarding any individual or political party achieving over 52% of the vote in the upcoming general elections.

This comes in response to Fitch Solutions’ forecast, which suggests a victory for John Mahama and the NDC in the December 2024 general elections.

Fitch Solutions, an international research and data firm, in its mid-year review for Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted that the prevailing economic conditions are likely to play a significant role in shaping voters’ decisions on December 7.

Mike Kruiniger, an Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, stated, “We believe that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead, with the most recent survey showing 54% of respondents favouring the NDC.”

During an appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV, Dr. Adomako expressed his doubts about the accuracy of Fitch Solutions’ prediction.

    Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi

“I am a bit weary about their results because I am rather of the opinion that December 7 for any strong party, be it the NDC or the NPP, to go beyond 52% will not be easy. That is my opinion, especially because of the trends worldwide.”

He continued, “Looking at the trend of voters and their sophistication at this point, for anybody to pronounce a 54% win puts me in doubt. I think that even if people might change the government because of the trend in this country where after two terms Ghanaians naturally would rather prefer to have a change in governance, it gives the opposition party some edge for doing nothing because of the nature of Ghanaians and our voters.”

Dr. Adomako further noted, “Moving above 51% will surprise me because, admittedly, the likes of Cheddar and the likes of the movement for change will grab some of the votes from either party. That is why I am questioning.”

He concluded by emphasizing that the NPP would not disregard the reviews. “For the NPP, I must say that we will not take the reviews for granted. The appropriate thing for us to do is to keep at what we are doing and to demonstrate how the digital economy is still above the economy.”

You’ve not shown us the decency or respect – Mahama’s team chides IEA over presidential debate

The Mahama 2024 Campaign has issued a sharp rebuke to the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana following its recent announcement of a presidential debate ahead of the December elections.

In a statement, the campaign criticized the IEA for failing to engage or inform the National Democratic Congress (NDC) before making the announcement. The NDC, one of Ghana’s major political parties, was taken by surprise by the IEA’s plans.

The campaign’s spokesperson, Joyce Mogtari, emphasized in a press release that the Constitution does not grant the IEA any authority to organize election-related activities.

“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives,” Mogtari stated.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign, in its Friday release, accused the IEA of lacking the decency and respect to inform the NDC of its debate plans, which they believe raises questions about the institute’s intentions.

Furthermore, the campaign alleged that the IEA is “acting as a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seeks to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the ruling party.”

Highlighting Mr. Mahama’s commitment to addressing the needs and concerns of the Ghanaian people, the statement mentioned that his campaign conversations have targeted a wide range of audiences.

The campaign accused the IEA of using the NDC’s name to promote its activities, describing this as a blatant attempt to misrepresent the party.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign concluded by assuring Ghanaians of the NDC’s dedication to meaningful and respectful engagement with the public, ensuring that all voices are heard and their needs addressed.

Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dared former President Mahama to a debate on the economy.

The NDC has however criticised the Vice President of prioritising a presidential debate over ensuring the recovery of the economy.

Anyidoho ‘attacks’ Mahama for campaigning to UG students

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has criticised the flagbearer of the party, John Mahama, for his recent nostalgic visit to his old room at the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, which created a wave of excitement among the students.

Accompanied by John Dumelo, the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the 2024 elections, and other party executives, Mahama’s visit was part of a working tour of the constituency.

Revisiting Room A32, where he once resided as an undergraduate history student, Mahama’s return to Vandal City—the nickname for Commonwealth Hall—was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Reacting to this, Mr Anyidoho who has for sometime mounted scathing critiques against the NDC alleged that Mr Mahama is imitating the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) despite reportedly condemning his engagement with students in schools.

“Did JM not insult Bawumia – calling him a “concert man” for visiting schools & interacting with students? what is JM doing singing/dancing with students? He is back from Russia with no ideas – no option but to copy Bawumia. Bawumia has become the pace setter,” he wrote in a post on X.

It must be clarified that in a statement, the NDC Walewale Constituency Communications Officer, Mashood Issifu Mahama, accused the NPP of coercing headteachers to line up the students on the streets of Walewale to welcome its flagbearer.

“It is deeply concerning that headteachers are coerced into diverting students from their classrooms to serve as cheerleaders for political campaigns. Parents entrust their children to schools with the expectation that they will receive quality education, not be used as political pawns,” he said.

There are no reports that corroborate Mr Anyidoho’s claim that Mr Mahama condemned the Vice President for engaging students.

The atmosphere was charged as students chanted campaign songs in support of the former president.

Videos circulating on social media captured Mahama’s joy as he engaged with the students, joining them in a lively ‘jama’ session, showcasing a strong connection with his alma mater.

Ensure GN Bank’s license is reinstated if you win 2024 elections – Nduom to Mahama

The management of Groupe Nduom has formally petitioned the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to reinstate GN Bank’s licence if he wins the December 7 elections.

GN Bank’s licence was revoked by the Bank of Ghana in August 2019.

In a meeting with the former president in Accra on Friday, July 19, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Global President of Groupe Nduom, voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of the bank’s 300 branches nationwide.

He emphasized the importance of restoring the bank to support job creation and economic stability.

“We believe that if this administration doesn’t give us our licence before they leave and start paying the money before they leave, we believe that the next one, will understand the situation and give the licence back. So we are continuing with the hope and preparing and working our plans with the hope that, at some point, we will get the licence back and we’ll bring the jobs back. Because it is the jobs, that we are also looking for,” Dr. Nduom stated.

He further argued that the closure of such a large financial entity is detrimental to the country’s economic interests.

“So we feel that collapsing a 300-branch financial entity is inimical to the economic interest of the country. So whether it even belongs to us or belongs to someone else, it is something that needs to be there,” he added.

In response, the NDC’s flagbearer criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its decision to revoke the licences of several indigenous financial institutions during the 2019 banking sector cleanup.

Mahama described the action as hasty and unfair, highlighting the negative impact on local capital in the financial sector.

“I do think that government was hasty in what it did. If you look at the criteria that was used, I mean, it didn’t fit. It was, it was not a one-size-fits-all. I mean, it was just like different rules for different folks and so, yes, as you said, a lot of these banks had also financed government suppliers and contractors and the government owed them and they owed the banks. But how would they recover that money if you don’t pay the contractors to pay them? And so I do think that it was hasty, and it’s affected indigenous capital in the financial and banking sector. And we have pledged that we would work to restore, you know, the capital of indigenous businesses in the financial sector,” Mahama stated.

Mahama also revealed plans to initiate an independent review of the banking sector cleanup process.

“So we are advocating an independent review of the processes that went into the banking sector clean up and where we believe these were unjustifiable, look at the restoration of the licences of these banks,” he concluded.

NDC will win 2024 elections with 54% of total votes cast – Fitch Solutions

Fitch Solutions, a renowned research and data firm based in London, has forecasted that Ghana’s opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to win the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7.

According to the firm’s latest survey findings, 54% of respondents favor the NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, over the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, highlighted economic factors as pivotal in shaping voter preferences.

He emphasized that issues such as economic management and job creation will heavily influence voters’ decisions during the elections, potentially placing the ruling NPP at a disadvantage due to recent economic challenges.

“We believe that the opposition NDC has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling NPP. Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead with the most recent survey showing 54% of respondents favoring the NDC,” stated Mr. Kruiniger during the Mid-Year Review for Sub Saharan Africa.

Regarding the potential policy direction under an NDC government, Mr. Kruiniger indicated continuity with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme initiated during the current administration led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

“In terms of what a government change will mean for the economy, we think that policy direction under a likely NDC government will not largely change. The NDC will most likely stick to Ghana’s IMF programme, particularly as the party has shown commitment in the past to international agreements and obligations,” he explained.

Fitch Solutions’ assessment suggests that despite a potential change in government, Ghana’s economic policies are likely to remain stable, ensuring continuity and consistency in economic management.

Randy Abbey schools Dep. Sanitation Minister who accused Mahama of buying state lands

Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, faced a stern rebuke during the Good Morning Ghana programme on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, when he made claims about former President John Dramani Mahama acquiring state properties, including lands, during his tenure.

Chinnia, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala East, alleged that Mahama and his appointees had purchased state assets while in office.

“The state assets John Dramani Mahama sold are more than this government. Even the bungalow he lived in as Vice President, when he was leaving, he wrote for that bungalow to be given to him. He bought state lands,” Chinnia asserted.

This claim prompted the programme’s host, Dr. Randy Abbey, to challenge Chinnia for evidence. “Who bought state lands?” Dr. Abbey inquired.

Chinnia responded, “Officials of the NDC. They bought a lot of it, including former President Mahama.”

When Dr. Abbey pressed further for proof, Chinnia mentioned, “Did President Mahama not write a letter for the state to hand over his official residence to him?”

Dr. Abbey accused the deputy minister of misleading the public, clarifying that Mahama had requested the residence as his official accommodation, a right entitled to him, and not for purchase.

“Please hold on. Please hold on. Please hold on. On the issue of that official residence, we all know the facts. Why are we twisting it? Please, let us respect our audience. You can’t sit on this programme and make a statement to the effect that the former President bought state lands and not prove it. Which land, which state land did he buy? Just tell us,” Dr. Abbey demanded.

Chinnia, unable to provide concrete evidence, maintained his stance, stating, “I would get it (the evidence) to you. He bought state lands. He offered to buy his official residence.”

Dr. Abbey reiterated, “He (Mahama) never, ever bought state lands. He never wrote to buy his state bungalow. It didn’t happen.”

After a prolonged exchange, Chinnia conceded that he did not have immediate proof that Mahama bought state lands but insisted that the former president had expressed interest in purchasing his official residence.

NPP MP fumbles on live TV after being asked to prove Mahama bought state lands

During a recent appearance on the Good Morning Ghana program, Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources and NPP Member of Parliament for Sissala East, Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, found himself in hot water after making unsubstantiated claims about former President John Dramani Mahama acquiring state properties, including lands, during his tenure.

Chinnia alleged that Mahama and his administration had purchased state assets, including the former vice president’s official residence, upon leaving office.

However, when pressed by the host, Dr. Randy Abbey, to provide evidence to support his claims, Chinnia struggled to substantiate his assertions.

The exchange grew heated as Dr. Abbey challenged Chinnia to produce any evidence of Mahama buying state lands.

“You can’t sit on this program and make a statement to the effect that the former President bought state lands and not prove it. Which land, which state land did he buy? Just tell us,” Dr. Abbey demanded.

In response, Chinnia could not provide specific details or evidence but maintained that Mahama had shown interest in purchasing his official residence.

Dr. Abbey swiftly corrected him, stating categorically that Mahama had never bought state lands and clarified that the former president had simply requested his official residence as entitled accommodation.

As the discussion unfolded, Chinnia attempted to backtrack, stating that Mahama had only expressed intentions to buy state lands rather than completing any purchases.

However, Dr. Abbey continued to challenge Chinnia on the accuracy of his claims, emphasizing the importance of factual accuracy in public statements.

President Akufo-Addo has declared that his government has constructed more roads than the combined efforts of the Mills/Mahama administration.

The announcement was made during the sod-cutting ceremony for the dualisation of the Anwiankwanta-Ahenema Kokoben Road on July 15, 2024.

Addressing a gathering of local officials, residents, and stakeholders, President Akufo-Addo detailed the extensive improvements made to the nation’s road network since 2017.

He cited a total of 12,830 kilometres of roads completed under his leadership. This figure starkly contrasts with the 4,636 kilometres of roads completed during the Mills/Mahama era from 2009 to 2016.

The President enumerated various types of roadworks undertaken by his administration, which include asphalt overlays, new constructions, graveling/re-graveling, reconstructions, partial reconstructions, rehabilitations, resealing, surfacing, and the construction of 35 crucial bridges. Additionally, six interchanges have been added, with 10 more currently in progress.

“This development is unparalleled in the history of Ghana, reflecting a level of commitment and efficiency in addressing our infrastructure needs that have not been seen before,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He emphasised the positive impact these developments have on connectivity, economic activities, and the overall quality of life for Ghanaians.

Despite these significant achievements, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the ongoing demand for more roads, attributing it to the substantial road deficit inherited by his administration. He urged future governments to continue the momentum and build upon the foundations laid by his administration.

“The progress made sets a high standard and serves as a blueprint for what can be achieved with dedication and strategic planning. Successive governments must ensure sustained investment in infrastructure to address the road deficit and meet the evolving needs of our rapidly growing population,” the President remarked.

In the Ashanti Region alone, 2,079 kilometres of roads have been completed, he said, including major upgrades and enhancements. President Akufo-Addo highlighted specific projects such as the construction of the Suame Interchange and the upgrading of local roads in Kumasi, which have significantly improved connectivity and transportation in the region.

The President detailed the various types of roadworks undertaken in the Ashanti Region, which include asphalt overlays, new constructions, graveling/re-graveling, reconstructions, rehabilitations, and the construction of two bridges at Susanso-Anloga and Kokoso-Bohyen.

A third bridge on the Nwabi River at Atafoa is substantially completed, further enhancing connectivity in the region.

Specific road projects completed in the Ashanti Region include the upgrading of 100 kilometres of local roads in Kumasi, the upgrading of the Lake Road into a dual carriageway from the Coca Cola Bottling Plant to Dompoase, and the upgrading of 56 kilometres of selected feeder roads in Nyinahin and surrounding areas. These projects have significantly improved transportation and connectivity for residents and businesses alike.

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted ongoing projects, such as the construction of the Suame Interchange, which is the first four-tier interchange in the Ashanti Region.

The project is progressing steadily, with the three overpasses on the Offinso Road at Anomagye, Magazine Road, and Abusuakuruwa already forty percent complete. Works on the main interchange have also started with the relocation of utilities around the area, and the project is expected to be completed in 2025.

In his concluding remarks, President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of continued investment in road infrastructure to address the country’s road deficit and meet the population’s evolving needs. He urged future governments to maintain the momentum and build on the foundations laid by his administration.

“The progress made sets a high standard and serves as a blueprint for what can be achieved with dedication and strategic planning. Successive governments must ensure sustained investment in infrastructure to address the road deficit and meet the evolving needs of our rapidly growing population,” the President remarked.

As the ceremony concluded, President Akufo-Addo expressed his gratitude to the people of the Ashanti Region for their support and patience.

He assured them of the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering on its promises and improving the region’s infrastructure.

  • I won’t be part of a Mahama gov’t that steals state assets – Ablakwa declares

I won’t be part of a Mahama gov’t that steals state assets – Ablakwa declares

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has firmly stated his stance against any future government under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that engages in state capture.

Speaking on Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, on Monday, July 15, 2024, Ablakwa emphasized that he would resign from any administration that indulges in practices detrimental to the nation’s assets.

The outspoken lawmaker highlighted his commitment to integrity and accountability in public office, asserting, “I will not just speak, but I will resign from the government. I won’t be part of it. That we come to power and these things that we are condemning, we come and do the same things, I won’t be part of such a government. I’ll just be in Parliament and I’ll be paid for it.”

Ablakwa further underscored that his livelihood does not depend on holding a ministerial position, stating there are numerous avenues outside government where he can thrive.

His comments come amidst recent controversies surrounding attempts to sell a 60% stake of SSNIT in four hotels, which he has actively opposed.

“I don’t have to be a Minister before I can eat. There are so many things I can do. There are so many people who are not in government who are doing well,” Ablakwa added.

Echoing sentiments expressed by NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, Ablakwa welcomed Mahama’s commitment to prevent his appointees from acquiring state assets.

He cited Mahama’s recent pledge during a media engagement where he vowed that no member of his administration would engage in such practices.

“I was happy when former President Mahama clearly said at his press conference that he won’t allow any member of his government to buy state assets,” Ablakwa affirmed. He expressed optimism that the proposed Protection of Public Assets Bill, aimed at prohibiting public officials from acquiring state properties, would be enacted before the commencement of any future NDC government.

Mahama, addressing concerns of political ethics and transparency, reiterated his commitment to ethical governance practices during his media engagement. He emphasized that under his leadership, all appointees would adhere strictly to a code of conduct prohibiting the purchase of state assets.

“We will cut out waste, we will eliminate opulence, and we will introduce a code of conduct for public appointees, especially political appointees, regarding how they behave in terms of their modesty and humility,” Mahama stated.

In response to ongoing concerns about political ethics and transparency, Mr Ablakwa has announced plans to lead a team of lawyers in drafting a private member’s bill addressing the issue of politicians buying and selling state assets.

He emphasized the need to curb practices that have persisted across administrations, including under the current Akufo-Addo regime.

  • Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

Nkrumah, Mahama beat Napo’s Akufo-Addo in poll to determine Ghana’s best president

In a recent poll conducted by GhanaWeb, Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has emerged as the most popular president in the country’s history.

The poll, conducted from Thursday, July 11, 2024, to Sunday, July 14, 2024, drew participation from approximately 17,000 readers of GhanaWeb.

The poll was prompted by remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (popularly known as NAPO), the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who asserted that the current President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has outperformed all past presidents, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Out of the respondents, over 60%—representing more than 10,000 participants—voted Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as the best president in Ghana’s history.

His legacy as the country’s founding father and his role in leading Ghana to independence clearly resonated with the majority of voters.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the current flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured the second position in the poll with over 14% of respondents (2,421 participants) recognizing him as the second best president.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who NAPO suggested had surpassed Nkrumah in achievements, placed third in the poll with 1,964 participants, amounting to nearly 12% of respondents endorsing him as the third best president.

Former presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings followed in the fourth and fifth positions respectively, with Kufuor garnering over 8% of the vote and Rawlings receiving nearly 3%.

The late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, who served as president from 2009 until his untimely death in 2012, ranked sixth in the poll with nearly 2% of respondents affirming his legacy.

Dr. Hilla Limann, who served briefly as president from 1979 to 1981, rounded out the poll in seventh place, receiving less than 1% of the votes.

The results underscore a strong sentiment among participants for Nkrumah’s pivotal role in Ghana’s history, despite differing views expressed by some political figures regarding contemporary achievements.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area have called on Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh to make his way to Nzema and apologise for the comparison between the late Nkrumah and Akufo-Addo after his recent apology communicated in a statement.

IEA prepares for 2024 presidential debate

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced the organization of a debate among some of the political parties intending to contest in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This debate, according to the IEA, is essential for voters to critically assess both presidential and vice-presidential candidates, thereby enabling informed decision-making.

The call for debates comes amidst ongoing disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the necessity of holding such debates.

Professor Alexander Bilson Darku, a senior fellow at the IEA, emphasized the importance of these debates in an interview with Citi News. He revealed that preliminary engagements have already commenced with various political parties to ensure a debate is held before the December 7 elections.

“Let me make this very clear from the beginning. The need for debate is the right of the people. The people of Ghana ought to know what their presidential candidate, and for that matter, the party they represent, have in stock for them,” Professor Darku stated. He added, “We are at a very early stage now, talking to them [the political parties]. We have our timetable, and very soon, it will be known to the public as to the programme that the IEA has outlined to make this all-important presidential debate come on.”

Professor Darku assured that the debates would be scheduled at a time beneficial for both the participating parties and the nation. He refrained from delving into specific details but affirmed that the timing would be advantageous.

Additionally, Professor Darku mentioned that the selection of participating parties and candidates would follow the Afrobarometer criteria.

“It has established a threshold, and we will use that threshold to invite the parties that meet the threshold to participate in the debate. This might be four or five parties, and their presidential candidates and vice-presidential candidates will be invited to participate in the debate.”
