22 policies Mahama outlined for the arts and tourism sector

In the course of a meeting with stakeholders in the creative arts sector on June 7, 2024, Mr. John Dramani Mahama detailed a range of policies aimed at reviving the industry if he wins the upcoming 2024 election.

The National Democratic Congress flagbearer highlighted the immense potential of the creative industry to generate employment for Ghanaians.

Acknowledging the untapped talents of many young individuals, he stressed the importance of creating opportunities for them to showcase their abilities and make significant contributions to the sector.

In anticipation of their manifesto launch, Mr. Mahama provided a preview of the strategies his administration plans to implement to elevate the creative arts sector.

Let’s take a look at them below:

Budgetary allocation for the creative arts.

  • Free Naa Koryoo now for the sake of justice, Ghana’s stability – Mahama tells IGP

Free Naa Koryoo now for the sake of justice, Ghana’s stability – Mahama tells IGP

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has urged the Ghana Police Service to promptly release Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region.

Mr. Mahama conveyed this appeal in a Facebook post on the evening of Friday, June 7, 2024.

“I urge the IGP to urgently reconsider his actions and release Naa Koryoo immediately for the sake of justice and the stability of our nation.”

The detention of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was initially brought to light by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that the police have not provided any reason for her arrest and subsequent detention. In a social media post, he characterized the situation as an effort to silence the NDC.

Sammy Gyamfi explained, “Her offence is simply that a weapon (gun) was found in her car. The said weapon is registered in her name. All the necessary registration documents have been submitted to the Police.

“Unlike, Hawa Koomson who in 2020 actually fired a gun at a registration center, Naa Koryoo has not fired any gun or weapon. Yet, the …Police service is hell-bent on detaining her.”

He urged all party faithful to throng the Cantonments Police Station in Accra where Naa Koryoo Okunor has been detained.

The following public commentary on the arrest came from Mr John Mahama, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and former president, who said: “There is no justification for the decision by the Inspector General of Police George Dampare, on the orders of the National Security Advisor, Albert Kan Dapaah, to detain a Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in Police custody.”

“This action, taken on the instructions of the National Security Secretariat, will needlessly raise the political temperature in the country and spark avoidable tension. The Police Service and the IGP must not allow themselves to be used to hang the peace and stability of our nation months before crucial national elections. I call on the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the people of Ghana to recognise that justice is not just a moral imperative but a crucial prerequisite for maintaining peace and stability in a nation.”

“We cannot allow the police service to be used to stifle opposition and intimidate innocent Ghanaians and political opponents in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Clearly, the intention to detain her after she had already been granted bail is an attempt to intimidate the NDC Parliamentary candidate in her quest to unseat the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.”

“It is high time the police fulfilled their duty to serve and protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations. #JusticeForNaaKoryoo. #FreeNaaKoryooNow.”

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced that three individuals were arrested at Ofaakor for possessing a firearm without lawful authority.

The suspects, including Ms. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah, were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. During the arrest, a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized from the vehicle.

In an interview on Wednesday, June 5, Ms. Okunor clarified that she was invited by the police rather than formally arrested. She stressed that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and explained that she obtained it for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson.

Ms. Okunor claimed that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations, where the MP allegedly attacked her and even fired gunshots.

“I have never been arrested. Yes, I was invited to the police station. I was not arrested. I was there because I had to go there.

“My driver was arrested, and my security guard was arrested because a licensed gun was found in my car…It was far away from the registration centre,” she said.

Prior to the arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise. This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson, who was subsequently hospitalized. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains unclear whether the subsequent arrest of the NDC Parliamentary Candidate is connected to the stabbing incident or solely pertains to the firearm possession charge.

  • Election 2024: New poll shows Mahama take lead in poll conducted in 4 NPP Accra strongholds

Election 2024: New poll shows Mahama take lead in poll conducted in 4 NPP Accra strongholds

An opinion poll conducted by Global Info Analytics across four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region reveals that John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, currently holds the majority of votes.

These constituencies—Okaikwei Central, Okaikwei South, Anyaa Sowutuom, and Trobu—have historically been strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), evidenced by their voting patterns in previous elections.

However, the poll results, released on May 31, 2024, indicate a significant shift just six months before the general election. In constituencies where the NPP secured an average of 62% of the vote in the 2020 election, the leading opposition candidate, John Mahama, now leads with 40.5%.

“The current vice president and flag bearer of the governing NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is on 36%, Nana Kwame Bediako, the New Force with 1.8%, Alan Kyeremanten, Movement for Change with 1.7%. 10.4% of voters say they will not vote and 9.4% are undecided,” the poll revealed.

In the parliamentary election, Patrick Yaw Boamah leads in Okaikwei Central with 50.5%, Baba Sadiq, 36%, 6.9% of voters do not intend to vote while 7.6% are undecided. Hon. Patrick Boamah won the seat in the 2020 election with nearly 19% margin.

According to Global InfoAnalytics, in Okaikwei South, the incumbent member of parliament’s chances of retaining her seat is hanging by the thread as poll shows the race is tied with Dakoa Newman leading with 40.4%, followed closely by Ernest Adomako, 38.5%. 10.6% are undecided and 10.5% will not vote. In the 2020 election, the incumbent won her race with nearly 22% margin.

“In the Anyaa Sowutuom, Elder Emmanuel Tobin leads the race with 41.8% followed by Emmanuel A. Allotey, NDC, 31.9%, Grace Ashley, Movement for Change, 2.7%, undecided, 10.1% and I will not vote, 13.5%. Hon. Dickson Adomako Kissi, the outgoing member of parliament, won the seat in the 2020 elections with nearly 30% margin,” Global Info Analytics indicated.

The Poll’s outcome shows that in the Trobu constituency, where Gloria Owusu, the NPP parliamentary candidate who ousted Hon. Moses Anim, leads with 44.8%, Dr John Kofi Halm with 36.7%, others, 0.5%, undecided, 5.8% and I will not vote, 12.2%. Hon. Moses Anim won the 2020 elections with nearly 28% margin.

“Analysis of the poll shows that in all the four BLUE constituencies, there is strong evidence from the data to suggest “skirt and blouse voting” tactical voting as all NPP candidates outperform their presidential candidate,” Mussa Dankwa’s outfit revealed.

Regarding voter inducement through projects during the election period, the poll reveals that only 28% of voters would support the government if they initiate projects just before the elections.

In contrast, 64% would not be swayed to vote for the ruling party, and 5% remain indifferent.

Similarly, on the question of whether the One-Student-One-Tablet policy might influence voters in the December election, only 31% indicated it would affect their vote in favor of the government.

Meanwhile, 64% said it would not influence their decision, and 5% were indifferent.

  • Mahama promises to legalise “Okada” business when voted into power

Mahama promises to legalise “Okada” business when voted into power

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his pledge to legalize the operations of commercial motorbike riders, commonly known as “Okada,” if elected in the 2024 general elections.

The NDC’s initiative to formalize the “Okada” business was halted following their defeat in the 2020 general elections.

Addressing motorbike riders in Ashaiman on Friday, May 31, 2024, Mr. Mahama emphasized that the party has incorporated the legalization of Okada activities into their 2024 manifesto.

He criticized the current government for failing to honor its commitment to replace motorbikes with cars.

“We have in our manifesto that we will legalise “Okada”, but we lost the elections and so that promise was not fulfilled. Our opponents objected to it claiming okada activities if operationalised will cause accidents.

“They instead promised to take your motorbikes and replace them with cars. Is that not what you were promised? Have you received the cars? It turned 419, we all know that this government is only good at telling lies.

“I stand at Ashaiman here, I know in all the 16 regions you have all your associations. There wouldn’t have been space if all okada riders were invited to Ashaiman, there would have been congestion.

I would like to tell those of you present to inform all your unions in the regions that from Ashaiman, I want to declare that we have in our 2024 manifesto, that we will legalise okada business when we win the 2024 general elections.

“Know that the door of your freedom will be opened on January 7, 2025, when they swear me in as President.”

He also expressed concern over the country’s unemployment rate since he left office in 2016.

“The unemployment rate was 8.5% when I left office in 2016, now it’s 14.7% Under Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s government.

If you were not engaged in okada business, the over 1.7 million something engaged in okada, would have been part of the unemployed, if your business was abolished, the unemployment rate would have jumped higher to 25%.

“In East Africa, they have legalised it and they are working nicely. We can also legalise it, and regulate it in safety and security. When we assume power, we will legalise it. We have riding instructors, so the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) will go to the regions to train you on how to ride safely,” he assured.

He encouraged motorbike riders to adhere to the regulations that would be enforced under the upcoming NDC administration.

“I’m pleading with you when we legalise it, you have to follow the rules, the passenger is also paramount. We will also assist those who don’t have a license to get a license.”

  • Mahama plans to create a new administrative city outside congested Accra to improve govt services

Mahama plans to create a new administrative city outside congested Accra to improve govt services

NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled proposals for the creation of a new administrative center beyond the confines of the Greater Accra Region.

This endeavor seeks to elevate the quality of government services and alleviate the significant traffic congestion gripping the nation’s capital.

During a session with the European Union Ambassador and the EU Chamber of Commerce on May 28, 2024, Mr. Mahama stressed the critical importance of this undertaking, highlighting the adverse effects of Accra’s overcrowding on both commercial expansion and governmental efficacy.

The proposed new city is envisaged as a strategic, enduring remedy to these issues.

“We will commence a feasibility study with a plan to construct a new city. Accra is gridlocked, and the time has arrived for us to relocate certain parts of the government services from Accra,” Mr. Mahama stated.

He emphasised that while Accra will remain the capital, the plan involves transferring some government functions to the new city.

“Accra will remain the capital, but we will transfer a portion of it elsewhere. There is already available land on the Accra Plains and opposite the bank of the Volta Lake,” he explained.

Mr. Mahama emphasized the ambitious scale of the project, estimating a 20-year timeframe for its completion.

This extended duration demonstrates a thorough and future-oriented strategy aimed at ensuring the new city fulfills its intended objectives.

“Moreover, we are establishing a port terminal in Mpakadan to transport cargo to the northern part of the country,” Mr. Mahama added, illustrating the broader infrastructural improvements accompanying the new city initiative.

  • Mahama has not said he will stablise the cedi in 100 days – Bawa Mogtari

Mahama has not said he will stablise the cedi in 100 days – Bawa Mogtari

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly refuted claims that he pledged to stabilize the faltering local currency within 100 days of taking office.

Contrary to reports that Mr. Mahama made such a promise at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit, a statement released on Wednesday, May 29, and signed by Joyce Bawah Mogtari, his Special Aide and Spokesperson, clarified Mr. Mahama’s actual intentions.

She stated that Mr. Mahama plans to initiate an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue, which will be held within the first hundred days of his tenure.

“Mr Mahama, with a deep understanding of the economic challenges confronting the country today, did not promise to stabilise the Ghana Cedi within 100 days. Instead, he laid out a comprehensive plan in his remarks at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit to address the challenges, demonstrating his grasp of the situation.

In his own words, Mahama stated, “Our number one priority will be stabilising the economy and restoring a stable currency. We will launch an urgent economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan following a national economic dialogue to be held within one hundred days of assumption of office.”

During a press engagement on Friday, May 24, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam identified three main factors contributing to the cedi’s decline.

He attributed the cedi’s depreciation to the appreciation of the US dollar on the international market, seasonal demand for foreign exchange, and the recent payment of contractors totaling over GHC40 billion.

As of May 2024, the Ghanaian cedi has depreciated by 14.2%, according to Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam. Despite this depreciation, Dr. Amin emphasized the currency’s relative strength.

Mahama ‘vows’ to cancel free utility bills, fuel, DSTV others for govt officials if voted into power

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to end the provision of free fuel and other perks to government officials if he wins the presidency in the upcoming December polls.

During a discussion with the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Mahama detailed his administration’s cost-saving measures, which include reducing incentives for government officials.

He emphasized that only government vehicles used strictly for official duties would receive state-funded fuel.

“We will discontinue the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV as conditions of service for top government officials, directors and the political class.

We believe that people should take up paying their own electricity bills and water like every other Ghanaian does.”

“Unless you are using a government vehicle on government assignment you should buy your own fuel if you are using your own car. And so we are going to discontinue them.

Our budget will be to support small businesses and use tax as incentives for job creation,” he said.

Mr. Mahama also revealed plans to introduce tax incentives for registered Ghanaian businesses. Additionally, he outlined a strategy to transition the country from cash payments to electronic payments, such as Mobile Money, in both the public and private sectors by 2028.

“We want to phase out cash as a form of all payments by 2028, and so for any payment that you have to do for any service that has to do with the public sector and some to do with the private sector, by 2028, we will no longer receive cash.”

“So in the hospital and other places, you would have to use your mobile money to pay. Only electronic forms of payments.”

  • Bawumia’s text message at CEO Summit causes Mahama to lose his composure

Bawumia’s text message at CEO Summit causes Mahama to lose his composure

It was a captivating scene on Monday, May 27, 2024, at the 8th Ghana CEOs Summit in Accra, Ghana, as significant developments unfolded during the event.

The organizers had arranged for the two main presidential contenders for the 2024 elections, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, to deliver speeches.

Due to his official trip to Canada and the USA, Vice President Bawumia could not attend in person but opted to participate via Zoom, acknowledging the importance of the event.

Unaware that Vice President Bawumia was monitoring his presentation, former President Mahama began his speech with vigor, believing he was the sole speaker.

In a surprising turn of events, the host, Jerry Adjorlolo, read a text message from the Vice President, stating that he had listened to former President Mahama and was ready to respond.

The message sent by Vice President Bawumia read:

“Jerry, please let the moderator know I have been listening from the beginning, and I’ve heard the entire submission of my brother, former President Mahama. I am poised and ready to respond to him boot for boot and ask that he sits and listens to my submission like I have done for him.”

Mr Mahama’s mood immediately switched, and he started to fumble over what was not immediately known.

Please don’t leave Ghana – Mahama begs multinational companies

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has appealed to multinational companies not to exit the Ghanaian market.

The economic environment in Ghana, spanning 2022 to date, has compelled many multinational companies to relocate all or part of their business to other countries.

The latest to quit its operations in Ghana is the food delivery giant in Africa, Glovo. The Spanish firm announced that it will be exiting the Ghanaian market on May 10, 2024, citing profitability challenges and a reassessment of investment priorities.

Speaking at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit in Accra, the NDC flagbearer indicated that their departure will obviously impact negatively on job creation, tax revenue to the state and ultimately economic growth

“Amid all the companies leaving, our public debts have hit a staggering 658.6 billion cedis. But we cannot despair over the poor quality of governance that has served us in the last seven and a half years.

I use this opportunity to appeal to you captains of the industry to tarry a bit more. Please don’t leave our country. There is a saying that the darkest hour is before the dawn,” he said.

He also promised to create a conducive environment for companies to run their businesses should the NDC win the 2024 polls

“The beauty of our democracy is that it affords us the opportunity to change our current trajectory. You can be rest assured that the new NDC ad.

  • I am proposing real projects, not Guinea fowl projects – Bawumia jabs Mahama

I am proposing real projects, not Guinea fowl projects – Bawumia jabs Mahama

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took a swipe at former President John Dramani Mahama during the 8th Ghana CEO Summit, highlighting the Akufo-Addo administration’s significant achievements in advancing the country’s development agenda.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the current government’s developmental projects are tangible and easily verifiable, contrasting them with what he termed the “guinea fowl” projects of Mr. Mahama’s tenure.

Speaking at the summit on Monday, May 27, Dr. Bawumia underscored that the projects under the Akufo-Addo administration are real and trackable by the public. He argued that this transparency and accountability demonstrate the government’s commitment to genuine development efforts.

Participating in the summit via Zoom from Canada, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the government’s dedication to sustainable development. He noted that the strides made under the Akufo-Addo administration are not only visible but also have a lasting impact on the country’s infrastructure and economic growth. According to Bawumia, these accomplishments lay a solid foundation for future progress.

In his address, the Vice President outlined various projects undertaken by the current administration, including improvements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

He stressed that these projects have been executed with precision and are benefiting many communities across Ghana.

“There were no vehicles for some of the projects we have done. We have done over 200 projects in the area of zongo development across all the zongos in the country. You look at our investment in technical and vocational education, over six billion Ghana Cedis in the last 7 years.”

“The highest investment in TVET by any government in the fourth republic, and we’ve made technical and vocational education also free in that context. You see in terms of our development authority, there are 1,609 projects completed. And under the Northern Development Authority, it has also completed over 304 projects so far and so we are not talking about Guinea fowl projects but real projects,” he said.

  • “Very wicked man” – Anyidoho chides Mahama over former stance on trainee allowance

“Very wicked man” – Anyidoho chides Mahama over former stance on trainee allowance

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has mounted another attack against the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama.

In his recent posts on X, Mr Anyidoho took a trip down memory lane and chastised Mr. Mahama on his stance on payment of trainee allowance 8 years ago.

In 2016, Mahama said he remained resolute in his government’s decision to scrap the teacher trainee allowance, noting that he prefers losing the December 7 elections to restoring the allowance.

Speaking at a forum at the University of Cape Coast, the then President, who was seeking a second term in office, said: “For purposes of partisan politics, you have your political opponent come and say when we come back, we will restore trainee allowances to colleges of education. For me, it is better to lose the election on principle than to win it on falsehood.”

In 2014, the government scrapped the age-old teacher trainee allowance and replaced it with student loans for teacher trainees to ensure parity, since other tertiary students were on the students loan scheme.

The teacher trainees, not happy with the government’s decision, resorted to demonstrations to force the government to back down.

But in 2020, former President John Mahama, who is still staging a comeback to the Jubilee House, promised to continue the payment of allowances to trainee teachers and nurses if he wins the December 2020 presidential polls.

“You know that it was a very critical issue in the run-up to the 2016 elections. What I had said was we were going to migrate the health trainees and educational trainees to the student loan scheme. Now what I have said going up to the 2020 elections is that we are going to let the status quo remain. It means that we are going to continue paying trainee allowances, but we will improve the student loan and adapt it so that it serves the same purpose as the allowances,” he promised.

Irrespective of Mr Mahama’s changed perspective, Mr Anyidoho has described him as a “very wicked man”.

His recent comment has not been taken lightly by the grassroots supporters of the NDC.

Presently, trainee allowances are being paid to teachers and nurses despite challenges with prompt payment.

  • How Mahama plans to address flooding in Ghana

How Mahama plans to address flooding in Ghana

Recent heavy rains in Ghana have once again underscored the urgent need for effective flood prevention and management strategies in the country.

Despite efforts such as the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development project (GARID), which aimed to bolster the resilience of the national capital, the issue persists.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 election, has articulated his plans to tackle this pressing challenge if elected to lead the nation once again.

In a recent Facebook post, Mahama expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to adequately manage and prevent floods, particularly in light of the recent loss of life and extensive property damage caused by the heavy downpours.

He lamented the lack of a comprehensive flood prevention and management plan, highlighting the inadequacy of existing interventions despite substantial financial investments.

Mahama emphasized the importance of prioritizing the protection of citizens’ lives and properties, declaring that “the current administration has failed in this regard.”

He pledged unwavering commitment to finding engineering solutions to persistent flooding issues and implementing effective prevention and management strategies.

Key components of Mahama’s proposed plan include investing in sustainable drainage systems, clearing structures in waterways, improving waste management practices, and implementing proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.

He stressed the need for real change and real solutions to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Ghanaians, calling for unity and collective action in achieving this goal.

Meanwhile, Parliament has approved a $150 million loan from the World Bank for the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which aims to mitigate flooding issues in the capital.

You’ve spent $200m to check flooding but there is nothing to show – Mahama slams gov’t

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the government’s flood prevention and management efforts following recent heavy downpours in Accra and other parts of the country.

In a Facebook post, the former President expressed disappointment that despite significant investments in flood mitigation, many areas still suffer from severe flooding even with minimal rainfall.

“Considering the huge sums of money allegedly spent by this government on draining the Odaw and other flood prevention interventions, the present situation is distressing. According to the government, $200 million was spent on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID).

“While the impact of that huge amount and its intervention have yet to be felt, parliament was recently recalled to approve another $150 million for the same GARID.

Mahama stressed the importance of prioritizing the protection of citizens’ lives and properties, stating that “The current administration has failed in this regard.”

Recent rainstorms have continuously brought to light Ghana’s failure to set up efficient drainage systems to avert flooding.

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development project (GARID) is the first in a series of projects designed to build the resilience of the national capital with the intial phase covering a five-year period (2020-2025).

The goal of the project is to improve flood risk and solid waste management in the Odaw River basin of the Greater Accra region and improve access to basic infrastructure and services in the targeted communities within the Odaw River Basin.

Former President John Mahama visited the Iranian Embassy in Accra on Friday, May 24, to sign the book of condolence for the late President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically died in a helicopter crash.

During his visit, the former president conveyed his heartfelt condolences and stood in solidarity with the people of Iran during this difficult period of mourning.

Ghana and Iran share a longstanding and robust relationship, and Mr. Mahama worked diligently to enhance these ties during his presidency. His visit to Iran in 2014 aimed to bolster economic cooperation and trade between the two nations.

At the embassy, Mahama reiterated Ghana’s commitment to strengthening relations with Iran and expressed optimism for continued cooperation upon his anticipated return to office in 2025.

Mr. Mahama extended his deepest sympathies to the people of Iran and the late president’s family, offering his support during their time of grief.

Corruption was swiftly handled under Mahama’s administration – Joyce Bawa

Special Aide to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has commended the former president for his swift handling of corruption during his administration.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari stated that John Mahama was significantly ahead in the fight against corruption, given the country’s efforts in this area.

In an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, May 21, she noted that despite the criticisms directed at Mr. Mahama, anti-corruption advocates have widely praised the transparency with which he addressed corruption issues during his tenure.

“I have not doubted him – I remember in some cases where the Attorney General was asked to report on a matter to generate a report, Mr Mahama handled corruption very swiftly.

“He allowed himself to be investigated by CHRAJ at the time and we were all witnesses to this matter. Did you ever recall Mr Mahama tried to hide any report that came from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, no,” Mrs Mogtari said.

She contrasted this with the current administration, arguing that despite the Akufo-Addo-led government passing the Right to Information Act and the Special Prosecutor’s Act as part of its anti-corruption measures, there have been persistent concerns about corruption.

The Special Aide to Mr. Mahama asserted that the current government has frustrated the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, who is now facing impeachment proceedings based on a petition from his predecessor.

“Mr Mahama has indicated that his administration was not perfect and also admitted that the criticisms that were directed at his administration were unfair,” she added.

You must ensure things are done right ahead of 2024 polls – Mahama tells Clergy

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the church, as the moral compass of society, to address concerns related to the 2024 electoral process.

He highlighted specific issues surrounding the Ejusu by-election and the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

During a meeting with the Christian Ecumenical Council on Monday, Mr. Mahama stressed the importance of the church advocating for neutrality and ensuring a free and fair election.

He emphasized the church’s critical role in upholding democratic principles and promoting justice within the electoral framework.

“This is a president who is appointing politically exposed people into positions of trust where they are supposed to be neutral and non-partisan, and so people who have been communicators for the party, people who have been IT backstops for the party, today are Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. How do you expect them to be neutral and fair in what is happening?”he quizzed.

“People who were patrons of TESCON on campus are today Commissioners of the Electoral Commission. But we want to wake up the conscience of the nation that the right thing must be done so that the outcome can actually be the will of the people.”

“So going up to the election, we will continue to play our part. We will raise the red flags anytime we think things are not going very well. And we believe that the church community should also keep an eye and be vigilant in terms of making sure that the right thing is done.”

Mr. Mahama called on the church to speak out against practices that compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

He reiterated his allegation that President Akufo-Addo is appointing politically exposed individuals to positions where neutrality and non-partisanship are crucial, arguing that these appointments undermine confidence as the elections approach.

The NDC flagbearer urged the church to actively participate in discussions and actions that would foster a transparent and trustworthy electoral process.

He concluded by emphasizing the need for the church to remain vigilant and vocal about electoral issues, ensuring that the democratic process is protected for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Allow me to be president, you have been one before – Bawumia tells Mahama

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on his main rival, John Dramani Mahama, to exhibit patience and allow him the opportunity to also serve as President.

During a visit to the Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV’s palace on Sunday, May 19, Dr. Bawumia stressed that while Mr. Mahama has already had a term as President, he has yet to serve in that capacity.

He urged Mr. Mahama to exercise restraint and permit him to take his turn.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that according to the constitution, Mr. Mahama is eligible for only one term, whereas he has the potential to serve for two terms if elected.

“[My main opponent and I] are both your children. We are both from the north and he has been president before but I haven’t been president before, so I have told him (John Mahama) that he is my senior brother, and he should have patience for me so I can also become president of this country.”

“I will be able to be president for 8 years, and he can only be president for four years, so if the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for 8-years rather than four years,” he said.

Despite actively campaigning, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his focus on addressing issues important to Ghanaians rather than resorting to insults or personal attacks against his opponents.

He reiterated his commitment to informing the electorate about his proposed plans and programmes for the country if elected President, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric aimed at undermining his opponents.

Ahead of the 2024 elections, presidential aspirants in Ghana are ramping up their campaigns in a bid to garner more support from voters.

In addition to traditional campaign tactics such as engaging in conversations and rallying supporters with slogans, some aspirants have taken to the dance floor to showcase their dancing skills.

Notably, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP, former President John Mahama representing the NDC, and Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, have all been seen displaying their dancing prowess during campaign events.

While this approach to campaigning has drawn mixed reactions from Ghanaians, with some expressing disapproval, others have found it acceptable and even entertaining.

The sight of presidential aspirants busting moves on the dance floor adds a unique and lively element to the election season, showcasing a different side to the candidates as they vie for the highest office in the country.

  • We will investigate opaque gold for oil programme and expose benefiting actors when I become president – Mahama

We will investigate opaque gold for oil programme and expose benefiting actors when I become president – Mahama

Opposition flagbearer John Dramani has pledged to investigate the government’s gold-for-oil policy should he secure the presidency, citing concerns over transparency.

Mr Mahama asserts that the arrangement lacks clarity and necessitates a comprehensive inquiry.

Introduced by the government in 2021, the gold-for-oil deal aimed to address the depreciation of the cedi and the surge in fuel prices.

Addressing the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, the leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress emphasised revisiting the deal.

He stated, “We will investigate the opaque gold for oil programme and expose the actors benefiting from this so-called barter agreement. Reports reaching me suggest that a new debt burden is being created because Ghana has not been able to keep up with its delivery of gold under the programme.”

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia introduced the policy in 2022 as part of efforts to counteract Ghana’s diminishing foreign currency reserves and the increasing demand for dollars by oil importers, both of which contribute to the depreciation of the Cedi and rising living costs.

Through the G4O program, Ghana seeks to obtain competitively priced oil through gold trading, with the goal of easing pressure on the Cedi, stabilizing fuel prices, and addressing balance of payment challenges.

As of March 2023, Ghana had acquired over 60,000 ounces of gold, valued at more than $97 million, from local mines. However, the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) aims to procure at least 160,000 ounces of gold, valued at approximately $300 million monthly, to fulfill around half of the country’s monthly oil demand.

  • NDC are promoters of galamsey, Mahama cannot solve it with AI – Richard Ahiagbah

NDC are promoters of galamsey, Mahama cannot solve it with AI – Richard Ahiagbah

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has dismissed John Dramani Mahama’s promise to use Artificial Intelligence to combat illegal mining if elected president as mere political rhetoric.

Mr Ahiagbah stated on his X handle that it would be impossible to effectively tackle galamsey with Mahama as president, accusing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of supporting illegal mining activities.

“The NDC are promoters of galamsey. Therefore, H.E Mahama’s promise to use AI-powered plan to combat galamsey is a vote-seeking gimmick. Galamsey is an existential problem that requires inputs from all strata of society to combat. Resolving the galamsey menace is impossible with H.E John Mahama and the NDC because they are promoters and beneficiaries of galamsey.”

During an address at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, John Dramani Mahama stated that his government would utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track excavators, and geofence all concessions.

This approach aims to coordinate and monitor activities within the small-scale mining sector to reduce environmental destruction.

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), referenced several instances to support his assertion that fighting galamsey under a Mahama administration would be ineffective.

He cited a 2020 video of Kwaku Boahen, then Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC, promising a “golden age of galamsey” to voters in mining communities, as well as Mahama’s promise to free galamsey convicts in 2020 at a campaign event in Mpohor.

Mahama vows on collaborative effort to rehabilitate lands destroyed by ‘Galamsey’

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the December 2024 elections, John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized the dire consequences of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” activities.

Should he win the presidential elections on December 7, Mahama proposes the establishment of a national joint action team on mining and forestry to tackle this issue.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Mahama expressed deep concern over the extensive damage caused by illegal mining.

He stressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts and decisive actions to address the challenges posed by this activity.

Mahama highlighted severe environmental degradation resulting from galamsey, emphasizing Ghana’s urgent need for intervention. Despite widespread devastation, only a few benefit, prompting Mahama to call for collective efforts to address this inequality and safeguard the nation’s natural resources.

Mahama pledged to formulate a new vision for the mining sector focused on reclaiming degraded lands, restoring environmental integrity, and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits. He underscored the importance of reclaiming damaged lands and harnessing Ghana’s natural environment for sustainable development.

To address the issue, Mahama proposed establishing a National Joint Action Team on Mining and Forestry, comprising the Forestry Commission, private sector, and small-scale mining (SSM) operators. This collaboration aims to rehabilitate impacted forests and create jobs in affected mining communities.

Mahama also announced plans to launch an #Atree4life initiative in mining communities, encouraging tree planting among the youth to mitigate environmental destruction caused by illegal mining activities.

“A Galamsey Rehabilitation Initiative will work to convert impacted lands into commercial crop production zones, such as palm, shea nut, cocoa and rubber plantations. This will be funded through special fees from the Minerals Commission, contributions by the SSM Association, and interested plantation companies.”

“I will launch a #Atree4life project through which re-afforestation by young people in mining areas will become an economically engaging activity. They will supervise the growth of these economically viable tree crops.” he added.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to investigate the government’s gold-for-oil policy if elected president.

Mahama argues that the arrangement lacks transparency and therefore requires thorough scrutiny.

The government introduced the gold-for-oil deal in 2021 to mitigate the depreciation of the cedi and the increase in fuel prices.

Addressing attendees at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Mahama emphasized that the deal will be reevaluated under his administration.

“We will investigate the opaque gold for oil programme and expose the actors benefiting from this so-called barter agreement. Reports reaching me suggest that a new debt burden is being created because Ghana has not been able to keep up with its delivery of gold under the programme.”

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia introduced the Gold for Oil (G4O) policy in 2022 to address Ghana’s declining foreign currency reserves and the high demand for dollars by oil importers, which had contributed to the weakening of the Cedi and increased living costs.

The G4O program aims to secure competitively priced oil by selling gold, thereby alleviating pressure on the Cedi, reducing soaring fuel prices, and addressing balance of payment issues.

By March 2023, the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) had purchased over 60,000 ounces of gold worth more than $97 million from local mines.

However, the PMMC’s target is to purchase at least 160,000 ounces of gold valued at around $300 million per month. This amount could cover about 50% of the country’s monthly oil demand.

Mahama promises to bring onboard traditional leaders in granting of mining licenses

The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to involve traditional leaders in the crucial process of granting mining licenses in Ghana if he wins the upcoming December elections.

He emphasized that incorporating traditional leaders into the licensing process is vital to addressing the destructive impact of illegal mining activities, known as galamsey.

Mahama highlighted the significant role traditional leaders play in their communities, stating that their insights and involvement are essential in effectively tackling the galamsey menace.

“One of the impacts of illegal mining, including galamsey, has been the destruction of forests and cocoa farms. We will protect the destruction of cocoa farms for mining and effectively ban the issuance of entry permits into forests. Mining in water bodies will be outrightly prohibited.”

“Recognising the invaluable role of traditional leaders in our society and as a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and respect for all stakeholders, I intend to have traditional leaders included in the crucial process of granting mining licences in their communities,” he said.

He underscored the need to leverage their knowledge of local issues and authority to ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly and sustainably, with proper consideration for environmental and community welfare.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, the former president expressed deep concern about the detrimental effects of illegal mining on various sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

Mahama pledged to take decisive actions, including banning mining in water bodies and imposing restrictions on permit issuance for activities within forested areas, to curb the adverse impacts of galamsey.

24-hour economy will create well-paying jobs, fix broken economy – NDC’s Joyce Bawah

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed that Mr. Mahama is profoundly dedicated to the well-being of Ghanaians.

A key focus of Mahama’s campaign is to address the “broken Ghanaian economy” and create well-paying jobs for the many unemployed youths.

Madam Mogtari conveyed that Mr. Mahama has a clear plan to tackle these economic challenges and stimulate job growth through the 24-hour economy policy.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday, May 15, Madam Mogtari also mentioned that the former President aims to enhance the living standards of every citizen, not just a select few.

“Be assured that the visionary and experienced leader, John Mahama, cares about Ghana!”

“He will fix the broken economy, create more well-paying jobs through his 24-HOUR ECONOMY initiative, improve the living standards of each citizen, not a few cronies and restore hope,” she posted on X.

She stressed that his efforts will bring widespread improvement and restore hope across the nation.

The former Deputy Transport Minister reiterated that Ghana belongs to all its citizens, not just those closely associated with the current government.

She underscored Mr. Mahama’s commitment to inclusive governance and equitable development.

She stressed that if elected in the upcoming election, Mr. Mahama would use all legal means to restore Ghana to its former prosperity.

Madam Mogtari expressed Mr. Mahama’s readiness to work tirelessly to enhance the nation for the welfare of all citizens.

  • Ghana was in a much better shape during Mahama’s administration – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Ghana was in a much better shape during Mahama’s administration – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, an aide to ex-President John Dramani Mahama, has lauded the achievements of the former President during his tenure.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s Face to Face, Kwakye Ofosu highlighted the significant infrastructural developments made under Mahama’s leadership compared to the current administration’s seven-year term.

When comparing Mahama‘s administration to Akufo-Addo‘s tenure, Kwakye Ofosu argued that conditions were notably better under the former President than what Ghanaians are currently experiencing.

He maintained that former President Mahama outperformed the NPP government in every performance metric.

“Our debt was manageable, we were not bankrupt as an economy, and other indices showed that things were not as bad as we have now. As of 2016, when he [Mahama] was leaving office, the country was in much better shape.

“If you look at all sectors of the economy, he has made massive investments to ensure that Ghanaian children have access to education. If you look at health, people still credit him [Mahama] for how we were able to survive COVID-19. But for the investments that he made in the expansive health infrastructure, there was no way we were going to weather the storm, so far as COVID-19 was concerned.

“We have had perennial power difficulty which lasted for decades, we had experienced power outages in the 80s, it happened in the 90s, early 200s under former President J.A Kufour. He took a bold step to ensure that he put in the investments to curtail that difficulty. And made it impossible for generation capacity to be a reason why we would go into power outages.

“Look at the communication sector, water, ICT space. By the time [former] President Mahama left office, 76% of Ghanaians had access to potable water, and that figure has dipped. Because this government has failed to replicate that kind of investment. In almost every sector of our national lives, things were much better than we have today.”

He pointed out that Mr. Mahama acted promptly in dismissing his appointees accused of corruption, while President Akufo-Addo consistently shields his corrupt appointees.

“His [Mahama’s] worst performance in the corruption perception index is better than the best performance of this government. If you look at his proactivity, the zeal at which he went after the people who were alleged to be corrupt under him. You remember the stalwart of NDC, Abuga Pele’s case, in many ways, he was a friend to former President Mahama, but he didn’t hesitate to put him out before the court when allegations of graft were made against him.

“You saw the swiftness in which he acted in Victora Hammah’s case… he immediately fired her, that has not been the case of this current government. President Akufo-Addo has been all too willing to shield corruption appointees.

“He made it impossible for the anti-corruption bodies to do meaningful work, because he prejudices the outcome of an investigation, and he has flatly refused to punish persons who are known to have engaged in corruption. So, there’s no basis for comparison between the NPP and anything former president Mahama did while in office. Former President Mahama on every important indicator completely outperformed the NPP government.”

He’s cooling off in London whiles Bawumia works the ground – Anyidoho jabs Mahama

Former Deputy General for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has chided the party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, over his alleged absence in the country as the country readies for the 2024 general elections.

He claims that the former President Mahama is in London to “cool off” as his main rival, the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, continues to campaign strongly ahead of the polls.

“Exactly a year today, the NDC allowed a Flagbearer to emerge via means that were not too illuminating when Dr. Duffuor was muscled out of the race. A year on, there is still no serious work being done to convince voters as he cools off in London and ceding the ground to DMB,” he wrote in a post on X.

It is unknown whether Mr Mahama is currently in the country or not.

NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has intensified his community engagement by conducting a house-to-house campaign during his tour of the North East Region.

Since the beginning of his regional tour, Dr. Bawumia has engaged with various groups, including market women, taxi drivers, and people from all walks of life on the streets, making his campaign impactful.

In his latest move to connect with voters, Dr. Bawumia conducted a house-to-house campaign in the North East Region. Despite early morning rains, residents of Walewale gave him a warm reception, and he proceeded to walk through the rain on the main street to begin his engagements.

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has dispelled claims that her boss was not invited by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s private and public functions as part of his 25th anniversary celebration.

An earlier post attributed to Joyce Bawah alleged that John Mahama was not invited to any of the ceremonies taking place as part of the Asante Chief’s celebrations.

But according to Madam Bawah, that news is false as “Both gentlemen enjoy a warm brotherly relationship and let me state without doubt that John Mahama does not require any kind of invitation to participate in any activities be they public or private activities involving Nana Otomfuo Osei Tutu.”

In a post on X, she added that “We have a free pass to Manhyia ignore the fake news from ‘Mr. No Ideas’ and his boys and girls,” while stressing that “the relationship between my Boss, Former President John Dramani Mahama and Nana Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu is a matter of public record.”

She urged those making false claims to desist from that as retribution would be their end should they fail to forfeit such actions.

“Lest I forget: To all those sharing fake news: crime has no expiry date. There are digital footprints that are permanent. You will be dealt with as you continue to peddle these maliciously fake stories. Take note.”

Former Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Bright Oduro (rtd), has noted that the Police will need to recruit 25,000 personnel to effectively manage the proposed 24-hour economy in Ghana.

The idea for the 24-hour economy has been put forward by former President John Dramani Mahama, who sees it as a potential solution to various challenges in the country, including the issue of unemployment, which has become increasingly concerning.

Mr. Oduro emphasized the importance of enhancing the Police force’s staff strength to accommodate the demands of such a policy if it is implemented.

“It will require massive recruitment effort that will potentially bring the police population ratio which is now about one policeman to 800 citizens to 1 to 500 citizens or even better. An additional massive recruitment of 25,000 will be needed to top up the present police strength of about 42,000 and to make up the UN minimum ratio of 1 to 500,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to oppose the candidacy of the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December elections.

He believes that electing the former President would reverse the progress made during his administration and put the nation’s development at risk.

Speaking to supporters at a mini rally in Doboro in the Greater Accra region after visiting the premises of Blue Skies Limited, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his support for Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia as the preferred presidential candidate.

“This is our election year and the limited registration has started. Anybody who hasn’t registered and is eligible should go and register. This is because your right to vote is your power.

“Also, when the time is up for the voting, our job is simple. The person I defeated and my work since I took over, seems not to please him, I cannot hand over power to such a person. He will destroy whatever we have done when he comes.”

He added “I am pleading with you to vote for the person I have worked with for the past seven and half years. I have faith in him and I know that he will come and continue the work I have begun as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

The Electoral Commission has commenced a nationwide limited registration exercise for individuals who have turned eighteen. The exercise started today, May 7, and is scheduled to conclude on May 20.

However, there have been reports of technical challenges in several locations, hindering the smooth registration of eligible Ghanaian citizens.

Investigation into alleged acts of corruption against Cecilia Dapaah will be reopened under my tenure – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of the alleged corruption case involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

Two house helps employed by Mrs. Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, faced charges in the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing money and items worth millions of cedis from the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, Accra.

The accused individuals, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing, including US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis. The alleged thefts occurred between July and October 2022.

In response to the matter and the Special Prosecutor’s referral to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for a money laundering investigation, the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice advised against initiating money laundering investigations into the former Sanitation Minister’s dealings.

The Attorney General’s office stressed the need to prove that financial gains were obtained from criminal proceeds arising from unlawful activity to pursue money laundering investigations.

Regarding these developments, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress for the 2024 election, expressed his disapproval. In a post on X on Thursday, May 2, he stated that his government would reopen investigations into the “alleged acts of corruption and graft” in the former Sanitation Minister’s case.

Additionally, the Executive Director of Ghana Integrity Initiatives (GII), Mary Awelana Addah, criticized EOCO for not conducting a more thorough investigation into the case. She suggested that EOCO could have continued its investigation independently before seeking advice from the Attorney General’s Office for prosecution.

Your insistence that chiefs stand up to greet you is very distressing – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo for his recent conduct during an interaction with a chief in the Oti Region, labeling it as unbecoming of a president and disrespectful to traditional leaders.

A video that circulated on social media last week sparked widespread condemnation of President Akufo-Addo‘s actions. The footage shows the President’s attendance at the funeral ceremony of the late Alhaji Rashid Bawa, which took place on Saturday, April 20, in Kadjebi, Oti Region.

During the event, President Akufo-Addo expressed dissatisfaction with the chiefs for being seated when he arrived. He, along with his ‘bodyguards’, insisted that the chiefs stand up before he would shake hands with them, delaying his greeting until they were standing.

John Mahama denounced President Akufo-Addo’s behavior, warning that failure to rebuke such actions could encourage further disrespect towards traditional leaders during the remainder of the President’s term.

He called on all Ghanaians to remain vigilant and hold their leaders accountable for upholding values of respect and dignity, particularly in their interactions with traditional authorities.

“The almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy. As the clock ticks towards the end of his mandate, the President’s attitude and utterances give much cause for concern.”

“His recent insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

John Mahama also launched a sharp criticism against President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of trying to subvert Ghana’s constitution and manipulate the political environment to favor his preferred successor.

Mahama’s remarks were prompted by a statement from Akufo-Addo in which the President stated his reluctance to hand over power to an opponent he had previously defeated.

Come debate me on credibility and policies – Bawumia dares Mahama

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a challenge to former President John Mahama for a two-person debate ahead of the December 7, 2024, general election.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the Communications Director for the Bawumia campaign team, emphasized in a statement that such a debate would allow Ghanaians to choose their next leader after President Akufo-Addo.

Aboagye highlighted that the debate would center on the achievements of both candidates and their proposed solutions to address the current economic challenges facing the country.

He further noted that the debate would help voters differentiate between the two candidates, particularly regarding their governance track records and approaches to addressing national issues.

“The big issue for 2024 comes down to the two personalities. Which of the two main candidates will Ghanaians want as their next leader after 2024? The one who was given his chance and blew it through his incompetence or the one who has shown what he can do even as a Vice President and is now asking to also be given the opportunity to show what he can do as President? We are daring the main opposition Party to come to a debate on the two personalities.”

“Dr. Bawumia’s Campaign invites the Ghanaian voter to focus on the credibility and weight of the policies of each of the two foremost presidential candidates – Bawumia and Mahama. In the next few months, the Bawumia campaign will humbly but decisively address all major issues facing our nation and how, with the current positive turnaround, he intends to consolidate the gains and tackle the outstanding issues head-on if given the mandate in December,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Dr. Bawumia is scheduled to kick off his political campaign today, Monday, April 29, in preparation for the December general elections. Beginning in the Eastern Region, the campaign will cover all 16 regions over the next month.

During his tour, Dr. Bawumia plans to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, clergy, youth groups, traders, drivers, farmers, students, and business owners.

The campaign will focus on engaging citizens from various sectors of society, with visits to marketplaces aimed at interacting with both traders and consumers.

God makes rulers, the best legacy you can leave is to exit peacefully – Mahama tells Akufo-Addo

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized to President Akufo-Addo that determining his successor is not within the President’s authority as he prepares to leave office.

Speaking at a ceremony in Damongo, in the Savannah Region, where he laid the foundation stone for a new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace, Mahama reminded the outgoing President that overseeing a peaceful and credible election is the most significant legacy he owes to the people of Ghana.

The project, featuring Malian architectural designs, includes a palace, a residence, and a meeting area, and is being financed by Mahama himself.

Although President Akufo-Addo was present at the ceremony, he had departed before Mahama made these comments directed at him.

“I wish to urge our president; this was my message to Nana Akufo-Addo, unfortunately he has left, and he has left only our member of the council of state on the high table.

“I wish to urge our President that the best legacy he can leave this country, is to superintend over a peaceful, transparent and credible election.”

‘I wish to remind him, that it is God who makes rulers and he can never ever be the one to choose his successor. It is God who will choose his successor “he stated to thunderous cheers from the crowd.

Former President John Dramani Mahama reiterated Ghana’s role as a beacon of democracy in Africa and emphasized the incumbent President’s responsibility to uphold this reputation. He condemned the violent incidents during the 2020 elections, where eight Ghanaians reportedly lost their lives due to alleged shootings by security personnel.

Mahama expressed surprise at the lack of a thorough investigation into the matter, the punishment of the perpetrators, and adequate compensation for the victims’ families. He pledged that if the NDC regains power after the 2024 election, the families of the victims would receive proper compensation.

The new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace project, which features Architect Atibila as the consultant and Grandeza Construction Company Limited as the builders, is scheduled for completion in October 2024.

Bawumia is contesting Mahama, not you – Miracles Aboagye tells Prof. Naana Jane

Director of Communications for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has emphasized that the real competition for Dr. Bawumia is the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, not his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Despite efforts by some to draw comparisons between the NPP flagbearer and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Aboagye clarified in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News that the upcoming December polls will feature Mr. Mahama and Dr. Bawumia on the ballot paper, not Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

“Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is in a contest with John Mahama They are the two people who are going to be on the ballot paper and these are people we have seen before. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s competition, his contest is the former president,” he stated.

Mr. Aboagye also mentioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on track to announce its flagbearer’s running mate. He disclosed that Dr. Bawumia has a clear candidate in mind for the position.

Despite concerns about delays and their potential impact, Mr. Aboagye reassured the public that the party is within its timeline and could announce the running mate at any moment.

“We are very much within the timeline. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago and so we still have time. If you recall his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So for us in the NPP we are very much within our timelines.

“It can be tomorrow it can be next week it can be next month it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be and when he is ready he is going to announce that,” he stated.

You couldn’t stop some of your appointees from stealing from market women – Nana B jabs Mahama

The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, has criticized the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President, John Dramani Mahama, alleging rampant corruption during his administration.

Speaking on Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ programme, Nana B highlighted that the corruption witnessed during Mahama’s presidency had severe consequences, particularly for market women who suffered losses due to fire outbreaks.

“Stealing during your term knew no bounds as some of your corrupt appointees even stole from market women with impunity,” he remarked.

Nana B emphasized the seriousness required for the presidency, suggesting that Mahama’s track record indicates that allowing him to lead Ghana again would result in further damage.

He cited the recent case of embezzlement involving the former CEO of MASLOC, who was sentenced to jail by the court, as an example of corruption during Mahama’s tenure.

“A typical example of crass corruption is the current one that has seen the former CEO of MASLOC being jailed by the court for her involvement in embezzlement activities,” he added.

An Accra High Court sentenced former MASLOC CEO Sedina Christine Tamakloe Attionu, in absentia, to ten years in prison with hard labor on April 16, 2024.

Former MASLOC Head of Operations Daniel Axim was also sentenced to five years in prison.

They were found guilty on 78 counts related to causing financial loss to the state, theft, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and contravening public procurement laws. An arrest warrant has been issued for Attionu.

Our returning officers are not NPP members – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted former President John Mahama’s allegations that it employed New Patriotic Party members as returning and deputy returning officers for the 2024 election in December.

The EC stated that the recruitment process for these roles was not only public but also conducted openly, fairly, and transparently.

According to a press statement, the Commission published a vacancy announcement in the Daily Graphic on February 5, 2024, and received a total of 20,561 applications.

“An in-house Committee was established to shortlist suitable applicants to be interviewed. For the information of the general public, all successful applicants at the interview have no less than 8 years of working experience with the Commission as Temporal Election Officials.”

“The allegation by former President Mahama that Ministers and DCEs were asked “to write the names of party apparatchiks and present them so that they would be appointed as the returning officers” IS NOT TRUE. The Commission rejects this unfounded allegation coming from the former President,” the statement read.

Following former President John Mahama’s interview at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he accused the government of politicizing the Electoral Commission, the EC has called on all stakeholders to communicate and disseminate information accurately and responsibly in this election year.

“As a Commission, we reaffirm our commitment to spearheading transparent, credible, and fair elections – upholding the highest standards of integrity as we commit to protecting the sanctity of Ghana’s electoral process.”

EC denies Mahama’s allegations of appointing NPP members as returning officers

Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted allegations made by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, regarding the appointment of Returning Officers for the 2024 polls.

During a recent interview at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Mr. Mahama accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of appointing its members to the EC and expressed concerns about the EC’s impartiality in the upcoming elections.

He alleged that the election management body had requested MPs and DCEs to disclose the names of NPP members during the recruitment of Returning Officers and their deputies.

However, Fred Tetteh, the Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, rebuffed these claims in a statement dated April 25. He criticized Mahama for condemning a practice he had employed during his term.

The EC clarified that the recruitment process for Returning Officers and their Deputies was conducted fairly and transparently, countering Mahama’s assertions.

“Per the attached public announcement, the Commission invited ALL interested Ghanaians to apply for the positions of Returning Officers and Deputy Returning Officers. The allegation by former President Mahama that Ministers and DCEs were asked ‘to write the names of party apparatchiks and present them so that they would be appointed as the returning officers’ IS NOT TRUE.

“The Commission rejects this unfounded allegation coming from the former President. I took Mahama out of office, he cannot be my successor – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his decision not to hand over the presidency to his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama.

During an address to the chiefs and people of Wa, President Akufo-Addo expressed appreciation for their support throughout his tenure.

He informed the paramount chief of the Waala traditional area, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, that he intends to return to the area with the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as his successor.

Emphasizing his stance, President Akufo-Addo stated that he would not pass on power to John Dramani Mahama, whom he defeated and ousted from office in 2016.

“Before the election is held, I am going to come here and pay my proper goodbye to you and thank you for the cooperation that I received from you when I was president. God willing, when I come, I will come with the man who is going to be my successor. Wa Naa, you know that the man I removed from the seat, I cannot have him as my successor and as a traditional ruler, you understand what I am saying.“

However, the President pledged his commitment to ensuring peace before, during, and after the December polls.

“Our country is known as the pacesetter for democratic government across the entire continent of Africa. I want to assure you that this year we are going to maintain that reputation. But I need your support and cooperation.

“I want us to work together to make sure that the peace and stability of our country is maintained all through the electioneering period and after”.

The durbar was part of the president’s one-day working visit to the Upper West region, where he commissioned a 15 MW solar power plant at Kaleo, and it served as an opportunity for him to pay homage to the chiefs.

The event, held at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra, also featured the running mate delivering her acceptance speech following her nomination.

During her address, which lasted for hours, the running mate expressed gratitude to Mr. Mahama for choosing her for the second time running.

Her speech, described by many as a significant improvement in her political communication compared to four years ago, saw Prof. Opoku-Agyemang delivering direct criticism at the government on various issues, including corruption, the economy, and governance.

Her address has elicited varied reactions on social media, with members and sympathizers of the NDC praising her performance. In contrast, members of the governing New Patriotic Party have sought to downplay the overall impact of her address and her candidature.

  • I don’t blame you, this is not your field – Peter Amewu jabs Mahama over train accident comment

I don’t blame you, this is not your field – Peter Amewu jabs Mahama over train accident comment

The Railways Development Minister, John Peter Amewu, has expressed displeasure with former President John Mahama over comments he made regarding the controversial accident involving Ghana’s new train.

The incident occurred during a test run when the train collided with a truck parked on a section of the rail line at Abortia in the Volta Region.

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, who took to social media platform X to comment on the accident, said, “How can you conduct a test run on a new railway line without a track inspection? How long had the vehicle been on the track before the test run? If I were President, I’ll be asking some serious questions,” John Mahama’s post stated.

Responding to Mr Mahama on Joy News PM Express on Monday, April 22, the Railways Development Minister said, “I totally disagree with his excellency John Dramani Mahama. I don’t blame him, this is not his field. These guys who did this test run are experts. These are 16 engineers who were brought from Poland. This is the 304th test they’ve conducted worldwide this year, I was told. And so I don’t know where his excellency John Mahama is coming from with this understanding that no inspection had been done.”

The Member of Parliament for Hohoe further explained that the inspection and test run were conducted by the Polish because it was part of the contract.

“As I clearly explained, they put in a system for inspection. Earlier on in the morning, they went around the whole line to see that there was no obstacle. 30 minutes before the takeoff of this DMU, the rail track, and the maintenance track were put ahead. So what is he [John Mahama] saying? I don’t think he understood the question he was asking.”

He added that there is no radar system to monitor the track except for the manual system of checking to see if the line was safe before the train moved – something that was done.

“So, this manual system that his excellency is talking about was conducted, so I don’t know what he’s talking about. The inspection was conducted on the same day. The engineers informed us that the rail track was 30 minutes ahead of the train. So when the incident happened, where did the rail track come from? It came from kilometre 97 back to the scene, kilometre 76 or so to do the recovery because they were ahead about the 30-minute difference. It is just a coincidence or an accident that I cannot explain,” he noted.

He stated that Mr. Mahama could have sought clarity about his standing in Ghanaian politics before joining the bandwagon of uninformed commentary on the incident.

“Did he [John Mahama] try to find out whether the inspection was done as a former president? He knows me well, he could just find out from me and they will tell him the truth. He has not established that fact and then he comes out with this kind of statement. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, this is below the belt. I am sorry, I give you all the respect but I expect you to find out first. You’re not even an engineer. These are 16 qualified engineers brought from Poland.”

He explained that, according to the contract, Ghana had not assumed full ownership of the train at the time of the test run, even though the country had full ownership and responsibility for the state of the tracks.

He said the cost of repairs would not be borne by Ghana. “There was no transfer of ownership. Which means the supplier was still responsible for the train. We’ll get ownership when the government has made the full payment which we haven’t done yet. So Ghana is not going to bear the cost of repairing the train involved in the accident during the test ride.”

“The inspection and test run were not conducted by the Ghana government.”

Asked whether he suspected sabotage as some have suggested, Mr Amewu said he was not in the position to justify that.

“What I can say is that the motive of just parking along the rail is very uncultured and cannot be accepted in any modern civilization.

On how long the vehicle had been on the track before the test run as Mr Mahama had questioned, Mr Amewu said that was extremely difficult to determine under the circumstances.

The truck driver, Abel Dzidotor, has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to three of the four charges against him, including inconsiderate driving and causing unlawful damage.

Additionally, the police have arrested four more individuals for their alleged involvement in the accident.

You have no right to call Mahama incompetent – Former UTAG President drags NPP over ‘dumsor’

Former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofori Marfo, has criticized the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing them as “incompetent.”

His criticism came amid a debate over the issue of ‘dumsor,’ a local term for irregular power supply.

Prof. Marfo’s remarks were prompted by recent comments from NPP representatives who labeled their opponents in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, as incompetent.

However, he argued that such accusations lacked credibility coming from a party that, in his view, had exhibited similar shortcomings.

“A few days ago, I heard their spokesperson say, incompetent Mahama. It sounds so bitter to me because they have exhibited the same incompetence…a pot shouldn’t tell charcoal that it’s black…when it comes to this particular issue (incompetence), they (the NPP) have no grounds to call Mahama that because they have failed,” oyerepaonline.com quoted him to have said in an interview on April 18, 2024.

Discussing the issue of erratic power supply, Prof. Marfo claimed that the NPP had not adequately tackled the problem during their time in office.

He noted that during the NDC’s administration under Mahama, efforts were made to alleviate the electricity crisis, and some NPP members acknowledged improvements in power supply.

“We were in a certain trouble; we wanted our redemption, and mind you, even at the time that they came to power, if they want to be truthful to themselves, John Mahama has fixed the ‘dumsor’ problem. In fact, some of them testified,” he added.

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged that a future NDC government will prioritize resolving issues surrounding the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

This commitment comes amid concerns about the policy’s execution and funding.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives from various teacher unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Mr. Mahama outlined plans to strengthen the education sector.

He announced his intention to convene a stakeholder forum on education within his first 100 days in office to gather feedback on how to enhance and provide quality education.

“Within the first 100 days of me becoming president, we will hold a stakeholder dialogue on education. It will have as part of its focus the implementational bottlenecks of the Free SHS, but it is also going to deal with how we can improve financing and teaching and learning at the basic school level and so at that stakeholder’s engagement, NAGRAT, GNAT, parents, students, educational experts, everybody is going to be there and we are going to have a discussion on access, on equity, on affordability, and on financing our educational system.”

I will be a better President, I have learnt my lessons – Mahama tells Ghanaians

Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has stated that his experience both in and out of office as President would strengthen his leadership abilities if re-elected.

Addressing his Building Ghana Tour in Kambatiak, Mr. Mahama highlighted his accomplishments during his presidency and acknowledged the valuable insights gained during his time out of office.

“I have been president before, and I had the experience. There is no school where you go and pay school fees, enroll, and say, I want to learn how to be president.

“You have to learn on the job. Luckily for me, I got the experience of working with a very good, honest, and one of the best presidents we have had in Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.

“As president, we did some things well; we built a lot of infrastructure. We provided health facilities in many districts and regions. We provided educational facilities,” he stated.

The former president revealed that during his and Professor Mills’ eight-year tenure, their government eradicated over 3,000 schools under trees and established more than 400 CHPS compounds.

Looking back on his presidency, Mr. Mahama acknowledged that there are certain issues he would have approached differently if given the chance.

“Not everybody gets that opportunity that you become president; you go out of office and you get the opportunity to come back again, and so I know that in the four years coming, I will be a much better president than even when I was president.

“One, because of the experience that I have had as president before, and two, because I had the opportunity to reflect on my period of time as president,” he said.

Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama wins maiden Sam Gilliam Award

Renowned Ghanaian sculptor, textile, and installation artist Ibrahim Mahama has secured the prestigious inaugural Sam Gilliam Award, established last year by the Dia Art Foundation and the Sam Gilliam Foundation to honor the late artist’s enduring legacy.

Mahama’s accolade includes a $75,000 prize along with a spotlight in Dia’s public program scheduled for autumn this year.

The award ceremony will become an annual tradition running until 2033.

Expressing his gratitude, Mahama stated, “Gilliam’s influential work, introduced to me during my studies by mentor Kąrî’kạchä Seid’ou, has remained a profound source of inspiration.

“I was first introduced to Gilliam’s important work as a student by my mentor Kąrî’kạchä Seid’ou, and it has been greatly influential on me ever since,” Mahama said in a statement. “The most important aspect of any community is to share their many gifts, even if they are born out of precarity, for within that point do we expand freedom for all life forms.”

Community sharing of diverse talents, even amidst challenges, is pivotal to expanding freedom for all.”

A jury comprising five distinguished individuals, including Annie Gawlak, Gilliam’s widow and president of his foundation; Courtney J. Martin, director of the Yale Center for British Art; Emiliano Valdés, chief curator of the Medellín Museum of Modern Art; Zoé Whitley, director of Chisenhale Gallery; and Jordan Carter, a curator at Dia, selected Mahama.

“Mahama champions collaboration in his work and, just like he gives renewed purpose to the materials he collects and recycles into artworks, he revitalises his communities, turning castoff structures into institutions for convening, learning, artmaking and collective growth,” Jessica Morgan, Dia’s director, said in a statement. “This award honours both sides of his sophisticated practice.”

His selection was notably based on the ambitious and community-centric nature of his projects, often involving collaborations with numerous artisans in Ghana.

Jessica Morgan, Dia’s director, lauded Mahama’s ethos of collaboration and revitalization of communities through art, remarking, “Mahama’s practice breathes new life into discarded materials, revitalising communities and spaces for collective growth.”

Mahama’s artistic repertoire, characterised by salvaged materials, encompasses a wide spectrum from vibrant fabric-based wall pieces to expansive installations addressing themes of colonialism and industry.

His public projects, including wrapping buildings’ façades with textiles crafted alongside Ghanaian craftspeople, highlight his commitment to communal engagement.

An upcoming commission involves wrapping London’s Barbican Centre in his signature textile art.

Having participated in major international exhibitions such as Desert X AlUla, the Sharjah Biennial, Bienal de São Paulo, the Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Ghanaian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Mahama’s artistry has garnered global recognition.

Represented by White Cube, his recent solo exhibition at the gallery’s Hong Kong space in 2022 showcased his multifaceted talent and profound artistic vision.

Akufo-Addo rebranding Mahama’s AMERI power plant to recommission on April 17 – Jinapor alleges

Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Abdulai Jinapor, has stated that the NDC will not tolerate any attempts by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to rename projects commissioned under former President John Dramani Mahama.

The Yapei-Kusawgu MP’s comments come in response to reports that the government is planning to commission the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP), which is believed to be six units of the 10-unit Ameri power plants procured during the Mahama administration between 2013 and 2015.

According to the Yapei-Kusawgu lawmaker, the government, having failed to achieve anything meaningful in the Energy sector, has “done the unthinkable by rebranding the Ameri plant procured under the able leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama under a new name called Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant (K1TPP).”

“All in a desperate attempt to deceive Ghanaians,” he stated.

Mr. Jinapor further explained, “The Ameri Power Plants, made up of 10 units, each with a total capacity of 250 megawatts, is a modular and versatile plant allowing for flexibility to generate power even with limited gas supply.”

“The only thing the Akufo-Addo administration has done is to relocate the units to Kumasi in Ashanti, and as if this is not enough, they have gone a step further by deciding to recommission the same plants 17th April 2024, interestingly, this same plant was commissioned under President Mahama.”

“This attempt to appropriate achievements of President Mahama and present them as that of this non-performing government will no longer be countenanced,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the government is yet to comment on the development.

Ghana is democratically poorer because of Akufo-Addo, Bawumia – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has criticized the Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for allegedly failing to uphold Ghana’s democratic principles in the 4th Republic.

The NDC flagbearer expressed concern, stating that the current administration has not taken sufficient measures to strengthen the country’s democratic foundations.

In a tweet posted on X on Monday, April 15, Mr. Mahama accused the government of prioritizing political expediency over other concerns, which he believes has had detrimental effects on the nation.

He lamented that Ghana has suffered as a result of these alleged actions by the government.

“The Nana Akufo Addo and Bawumia-led administration has crossed many red lines in our democratic practice.

“Their deliberate acts of putting political convenience ahead of democratic consolidation have left Ghana’s 4th Republic the poorer for it,” he posted.

The former President reiterated his stance that significant efforts are required to reverse the current trend and ensure the protection and advancement of Ghana’s democratic values.
