No fuel or DSTV allowances for govt officials if I become president – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has announced his intention to eliminate certain allowances for government officials, directors, and the political class if re-elected in the December 7 polls.

Specifically, he plans to end the payment of fuel, DSTV, utility bills, and other benefits currently provided to these individuals.

Mahama explained that this move is aimed at saving the country money and that high-profile officials should pay their utility bills like every other citizen.

He stated,”We will discontinue the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV, etc., as conditions of service for top government officials, directors, and the political class. We believe that people should be responsible for paying their own electricity and water bills, just as every other Ghanaian does.”

“Unless you are using a government vehicle or are on a government assignment, you should purchase your own fuel if you are using your personal car. We are going to put an end to that”.

Furthermore, he emphasized that unless officials are using a government vehicle or on a government assignment, they should purchase their own fuel if using personal cars. “We are going to put an end to that,” he stressed.

Mahama made these remarks during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly.

Effutu: NDC concerned of potential manipulation after EC’s abrupt transfer

Effutu constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed serious concerns over the sudden transfer of Emelia Ama Akotiah, the Electoral Commissioner (EC) for the area, just days before the conclusion of the limited voter registration exercise.

During a press conference, James Kofi Annan, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate in Effutu, raised suspicions of potential manipulation associated with this unexpected transfer.

He emphasized that while Akotiah’s past performance as Electoral Commissioner had been marred by allegations of voter manipulation during the 2020 elections, her recent efforts were focused on addressing these issues.

“Why will you transfer an officer at such an ungodly hour when you know that there is an ongoing registration exercise and there is an impending transfer to be done?”

Mr. Annan quizzed, implying that the transfer might be a strategic decision to disrupt fair processes ahead of the upcoming December 7 polls.

Mr. Annan emphasized that the timing of the transfer is highly suspicious and could potentially compromise the integrity of the electoral process in the constituency.

He suggested that Emelia Akotiah’s proactive measures to rectify past irregularities and prevent future ones might have prompted her abrupt transfer.

The Effutu branch of the NDC is urging transparency and accountability from the Electoral Commission regarding this decision.

They are demanding clear explanations for Akotiah’s transfer and insisting that the registration and upcoming electoral procedures remain free from any form of manipulation or bias.

  • “I want to end it once and for all” – Ablakwa on bill banning politicians from buying state assets

“I want to end it once and for all” – Ablakwa on bill banning politicians from buying state assets

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced his intention to lead a team of lawyers in drafting a private member’s bill aimed at addressing the issue of Ghanaian politicians engaging in the sale or purchase of state assets.

Ablakwa asserts that this longstanding practice, which persists under the Akufo-Addo regime, must come to an end.

Taking proactive measures, Mr. Ablakwa has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate and halt the sale of hotels such as Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, and Ridge Royal Hotel to the Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, May 27, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that respected Ghanaian legal luminary Professor Kwaku Azar has responded positively to his request to lead the team of lawyers that he’s putting together to have a private member’s bill “on this matter of politicians participating in the sale or purchase of state assets.”

“I want to end it once and for all, because this has opened a can of worms and it will appear that it started gradually in very small forms, an now it has taken a dimension that is not in the national interest and people are taking advantage of.

“Some politicians are taking advantage of grey areas and loopholes.

Matters that appear amorphous and ambiguous are not settled and so they are just engaging in naked conflict of interest so I want us to have a law that expressly bans serving politicians in executive positions from participating in the sale and purchase of state assets.

“And I want to thank Professor Kwaku Azar for leading the team. So in the coming days, we will be finalising our works and then we will share with the public what we have done.

I know that the right honourable speaker who is forward-looking and he is a reformist will support in this regard.”

The former Deputy Education Minister also hinted at an impending demonstration he would be leading against the proposed sale of SSNIT hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited owned by the Agric Minister.

According to him, despite the expressed opposition to the deal, the processes are still ongoing between SSNIT and the potential buyer.

He said he has already notified the police about the protest scheduled for June 18th.

  • Voltarians won’t vote for NDC because they don’t want to pay school fees – Woman claims

The National Democratic Congress may not see Voltarians turn up to vote for the party during the 2024 general elections, and this is based on recent unconfirmed reports.

A woman believed to hail from the Volta Region alleges that the NDC is no longer in good standing with the people of the the Volta Region.

She asserts that Voltarians are more inclined to vote for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to the infrastructural development undertaken by the government.

In a video on social media, the lady mentioned of the benefits Voltarians have derived due to the Free Senior High School Policy initiated in 2017.

She also accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of bussing some Togolese nationals to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

The lady alleged that the NDC is doing so after residents in the Volta region decided not to participate in the ongoing exercise.

The claim cannot be independently confirmed by The Independent Ghana.

The video comes after the Jasikan Municipal Police Command arrested two alleged Togolese after they attempted to register in the ongoing voter registration exercises.

The suspects were arrested on Sunday, 19 May 2024 around 4pm.

The suspects were allegedly brought into the country by executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to partake in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

NDC accuses NPP of busing foreigners to register in Hohoe

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Hohoe constituency of the Volta Region has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of transporting individuals from Togo to take part in the ongoing limited voter registration.

The NDC claims that the NPP has been using buses and pickups to bring large numbers of people to register in preparation for the upcoming December 7 general elections.

In an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, NDC’s Hohoe constituency secretary, Prosper Kumi said, “There were buses and pickups that were bringing people from a community in Togo to Wli Todzi on the Ghana side to be registered. Per estimates, we had 155 people and 199 registered on the first and second days respectively.”

“Some are being bused to the Hohoe registration centre. These people were not able to respond to basic questions like their date of birth and their house numbers and they were speaking French and cannot speak the local language,” the constituency secretary further alleged.

Harry Abedenego, the first vice chairman for the NPP in Hohoe, has denied the allegations, describing them as unfounded and strange.

He stated that the NDC is merely raising these concerns out of fear that the people of Wli Todzi will vote to re-elect John Peter Amewu and support the NPP in the upcoming elections.

“It is very strange that the NDC will today accuse the NPP of bringing foreigners to register. The community they are talking about is a Ghanaian town so what is the crime about them registering for the voter ID card?

“It is not true that we are bringing in Togolese to register. Peter Amewu’s mother is from Wli Todzi and you can remember that he [Peter Amewu] was often accused of being a Togolese and so the people are afraid that the people of the town will vote for Amewu and the NPP and that is what they are afraid of.”

  • Richard Ahiagbah must be arrested for voting in 2020 polls without Voter ID – NDC tells police

Richard Ahiagbah must be arrested for voting in 2020 polls without Voter ID – NDC tells police

The Volta Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on the Ghana Police Service to take action against Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly violating the country’s electoral laws.

This call stems from an incident during the 2020 general elections, where Mr. Ahiagbah, despite acknowledging that his name was not found in the voter register for the Ketu South constituency, was permitted to cast his ballot.

The NDC’s demand for action comes in the wake of the recent arrest of Hopeson Adorye, a prominent member of the Movement for Change, on charges related to claims of detonating dynamite in the Volta Region during the 2016 general elections.

In an interview with Accra-based TV3 on Friday, May 24, the Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, James Gunu, emphasized that, similar to Hopeson Adorye, Richard Ahiagbah should be arrested for alleged involvement in electoral fraud.

“Richard Ahiagbah, a stalwart of the NPP confessed that though he was not a registered voter in 2020, he voted. That is another confession and that is criminal just as the throwing of dynamites. Now Hopeson has been arrested and granted bail, but we cannot leave the other person who has confessed because we cannot live in a selective justice system.”

“If Hopseson Adorye is guilty, Richard Ahiagbah is equally guilty of electoral fraud and I expect the Ghana Police Service to pick him up and investigate him because he personally confessed this,” he stated.

He stressed the importance of thorough investigations into all allegations to ensure electoral justice, asserting that law enforcement should not only apprehend individuals but also conduct comprehensive inquiries into the matter.

  • NDC is not our enemy – EC

NDC is not our enemy – EC

The Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has emphasized that the EC does not harbor any animosity towards the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He noted that the NDC, being a key stakeholder in Ghana’s elections, frequently raises concerns when it perceives issues in electoral processes and procedures.

In an interview on JoyNews Pulse on May 24, Dr. Quaicoe explained that once the EC addresses these concerns, the NDC moves past them and continues to engage constructively.

He highlighted that such interactions are typical for political parties and should not be seen as personal attacks on individuals within the EC.

“I want to put on record that the Electoral Commission and the NDC, we are not enemies. When you come and meet some of them, we all attended the same schools and we are nice….

“Normally, they will come and make the allegations and we will come and refute them. Once we refute them, it ends the case. I believe some of them maybe, they don’t understand how  the system works, that is why they will make those allegations but we are not enemies with them,” he said.

For weeks, the NDC and the EC have been engaged in intense exchanges over the NDC’s allegations of the theft of several Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) devices from the Commission’s offices.

Initially, the EC denied these allegations but later admitted, albeit reluctantly, that some equipment was indeed missing.

Despite this, the Commission assured the public that the incident would not impact the upcoming polls in any way.

  • Gov’t is selling Labadi Beach Hotel, others to loot and share – Yayra Koku

Gov’t is selling Labadi Beach Hotel, others to loot and share – Yayra Koku

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yayra Koku, is wondering why the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) is working on selling one of its hotels, Labadi Beach Hotel, to Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

According to Mr Koku, such a move is questionable when Labadi Beach Hotel is able to pay GHC25 million as dividend to its sole shareholder.

He believes that SSNIT’s plan to sell the facility and three others more is one of the many mechanisms by the government to loot and share among themselves.

“How can a company that is able to pay GHc25m as dividend to its sole shareholder be described as not doing well? This is a CREATE, LOOT & SHARE for Bryan Acheampong and NPP,” he wrote in a post on X.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has been petitioned by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to investigate allegations surrounding the sale of four hotels: Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel.

Rock City Hotel is in negotiation with SSNIT to buy a 60% stake in each of the four hotels.

Mr. Ablakwa’s petition to CHRAJ calls for an investigation into several allegations, including conflict of interest, abuse of power, lack of due process, procurement breaches, cronyism, and graft.

But both SSNIT and Mr Bryan Acheampong say nothing untoward has taken place since Rock City Hotel submitted the best and strongest technical and financial proposal amongst those received by SSNIT.

    Labadi Beach Hotel

In 2023, Ghana’s premier five-Star hotel, Labadi Beach Hotel, declared GH¢25 million in dividends for 2022 to its sole shareholder, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

The financial windfall comes on the heels of the GH¢10 million in dividends declared by the hotel to SSNIT in February this year for the 2022 financial year.

At an event in Accra where the company’s latest profits were announced, the Managing Director of the hotel, David Eduaful, said “as we honour our obligation of declaring dividends to the shareholder today, it is important to acknowledge the overwhelming support and patronage of our valued customers who continue to make us number one”.

Mr Eduaful attributed the “historic payout to the unwavering support from the Board of Directors, the hard work of the management and entire staff, and recently implemented cost-cutting and waste-minimisation measures”.

The cedi is becoming weak like ‘kontomire’ – Ayawaso West Wuogon NDC Chair

The Chairman of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bismark Aborbi-Ayitey, has likened the fast-paced depreciation of the Ghana Cedi to ‘kontomire’ — the leaf of the cocoyam plant.

Mr Aborbi-Ayitey attributes the Cedi’s depreciation against major foreign currencies to rampant corruption and gross mismanagement by the government.

“All these monies that you are paying to foreign companies are in dollars, and if no tangible benefits are derived, the cedi will automatically depreciate, leaving it to become as weak as kontomire,” he said.

He highlighted numerous instances of financial misconduct that he believes have significantly weakened the nation’s currency.

“Our money is being mismanaged,” he asserted. “Eleven million dollars were paid for the construction of the Pwalugu Dam, yet we haven’t seen anything resembling that project.”

He also highlighted other questionable financial decisions, alleging, “$2 million and $2.5 million were paid to a South African company and a Portuguese company respectively for the construction of a sky train and the reconstruction of the Accra-Tema Motorway. None of these projects have materialized.”

Mr Aborbi-Ayitey emphasized that these corrupt practices place substantial pressure on the cedi, leading to its devaluation.

Sack team producing errors in voter registration figures – NDC tells EC

Dr. Rashid Tanko, Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the opposition NDC has called for the dismissal of the team responsible for generating and publishing infographics of data in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

This comes after the Electoral Commission (EC) announced a change in the team.

According to the Commission, this change aims to prevent the dissemination of erroneous figures.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, stated that rigorous mechanisms have been implemented to avoid future errors.

“The Commission apologises for the error,” he added.

However, Dr. Rashid Tanko expressed dissatisfaction with the assurances provided by the Commission. He argued that individuals found complicit should be dismissed rather than reassigned.

“It is not enough for us. Heads should roll at the Electoral Commission. Changing the team is not enough. It is not the answer. What is the quality assurance going on at the Electoral Commission that led them to churn out those fake figures?

“The one who presided over all that should step aside. That is what a serious country should be built on, not just asking that people should be changed. What is the meaning of that?”

Meanwhile, the EC reports that the Volta region has recorded the highest number of challenged cases, while the Ashanti region leads in overall registered voters.

  • Hollow threats! – NDC replies Henry Quartey over name reveal in secret recruitment claims

Hollow threats! – NDC replies Henry Quartey over name reveal in secret recruitment claims

Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson has called on Interior Minister Henry Quartey to publicly release the names of opposition MPs accused of engaging in protocol recruitment for security services.

During a May 21, 2024, interview on Neat FM, Quartey threatened to reveal the names of National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs allegedly involved in such practices.

This came after Forson claimed that each New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP had been given 30 slots for security service recruitments.

In a statement dated May 21, 2024, and posted on his social media handles, Forson described the minister’s position as “alarming and baseless.”

“His insinuation that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have participated in improper recruitment practices without providing any evidence is a clear attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand,” the statement read in part.

It added that Quartey’s views were “a hollow threat intended to intimidate and silence legitimate criticism from the Minority Caucus,” but that the Minority won’t be cowed.

“I challenge the Interior Minister to name the individuals he claims were brought forward by NDC MPs for recruitment. Let us move away from rhetoric and towards accountability.

“If the Minister cannot provide these names, then his statements must be seen for what they are: an attempt to distract from the substantive concerns we have raised,” Ato Forson stressed.

He added that the Minority will move for a probe into recruitment since President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo came into office in 2017.

Statement: Ato Forson replies Henry Quartey:

I find the recent statements by the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, both alarming and baseless. His insinuation that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have participated in improper recruitment practices without providing any evidence is a clear attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand.

The Minister’s remarks, made during an interview with Neat FM on May 21, 2024, and reproduced in the article below, come off as a hollow threat intended to intimidate and silence legitimate criticism from the Minority Caucus.

Our concern has been and remains the transparency and fairness in the recruitment process into our country’s security services. Specifically, we highlighted credible information suggesting that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is manipulating recruitment processes to favor its parliamentary candidates with 30 slots each. This allegation is serious and deserves a substantive response, not deflection.

I challenge the Interior Minister to name the individuals he claims were brought forward by NDC MPs for recruitment. Let us move away from rhetoric and towards accountability. If the Minister cannot provide these names, then his statements must be seen for what they are: an attempt to distract from the substantive concerns we have raised.

Mr. Minister, I can assure you that we will bring a motion to Parliament to demand an enquiry into the recruitment into security services since 2017.

The integrity of our security services and the trust of the Ghanaian people in our institutions depend on our collective commitment to transparency and justice.

  • Dare us and you will be exposed – Henry Quartey to NDC over secret recruitment

Dare us and you will be exposed – Henry Quartey to NDC over secret recruitment

Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, has threatened to disclose the names of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament who have facilitated the recruitment of individuals into the country’s security services.

This threat came as the minister responded to allegations by the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and other members of the Minority Caucus, who claimed that the government has allocated 30 recruitment slots in the country’s security services to parliamentary candidates of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While commending the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government’s efforts in recruiting for the country’s security services, Quartey suggested that NDC MPs had also been involved in recommending people for recruitment.

He added that if he is challenged, he would reveal the names provided by the NDC for recruitment. “When the NPP came into power, the total number of personnel at the Ghana Immigration Service was 6,000, but today, because of President Akufo-Addo, they are over 14,000. About 12,000 have been added to the Ghana Police Service.

“When you gaze into the eyes of the dead, you would see a ghost; I’m going to leave it here, I won’t go down that lane. But if they dare us, we will mention their names and the people they brought over the years, but we will leave that for now,” he said in an interview with Neat FM on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

The Interior Minister emphatically denied the claim by NDC MPs that a secret recruitment process is underway, with NPP parliamentary candidates each receiving 30 slots.

He clarified that while recruitment is planned for this year, it has not yet commenced. Additionally, there will be no sale of application forms, as the government aims to address the backlog from previous recruitment cycles.

    What Ato Forson said:

Minority Leader alleged during a news conference that all parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been allocated 30 slots each to select party loyalists and supporters to fill positions within the security services, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Army.

Dr. Forson urged President Akufo-Addo and the government to halt what he described as undemocratic behaviour. He emphasised the need for transparency and fairness in the recruitment processes within the security sector.

“Notwithstanding the fact that the Minority raised serious concerns about the criteria adopted by the NPP government to recruit personnel into the security services, it has persisted in taking additional steps in the last few days that we have seen.

“The NDC Minority can authoritatively state that not long ago, the NPP government again illegally and fraudulently gave out 30 slots to all NPP parliamentary candidates across the country for recruitment into the security services,” he alleged.

He suggested that the move was part of attempts to manipulate the upcoming election; adding that NDC MPs are committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and preventing any actions that could undermine the country’s democracy.

Watch Henry Quartey’s remarks in the below:

  • Name persons NDC MPs brought for recruitment into security agencies

Name persons NDC MPs brought for recruitment into security agencies
- Ato Forson dares Henry Quartey

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has denied claims that members of his caucus submitted names for recruitment into various security agencies.

Dr. Forson refuted the allegations made by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, describing them as baseless and deceitful.

He asserted that the minister’s claims are an attempt to counter his own revelations about the government’s clandestine and illegal recruitment into the security services ahead of the December elections.

According to Dr. Forson, the Ayawaso Central MP is trying to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand.

He has therefore challenged his parliamentary colleague to name the NDC MPs who allegedly submitted names for recruitment, as well as the names of those individuals.

“I find the recent statements by the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, both alarming and baseless. His insinuation that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have participated in improper recruitment practices without providing any evidence is a clear attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand.”

I challenge the Interior Minister to name the individuals he claims were brought forward by NDC MPs for recruitment. Let us move away from rhetoric and towards accountability. If the Minister cannot provide these names, then his statements must be seen for what they are: an attempt to distract from the substantive concerns we have raised,” he stated.

During a news conference on Monday, May 20, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson alleged that all NPP parliamentary candidates have been allocated 30 slots each to select NPP loyalists and supporters for positions within the security services, including the police and army.

Dr. Forson urged President Akufo-Addo and the government to halt what he described as undemocratic behavior. He emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in the recruitment processes within the security sector.

In response to these allegations, Mr. Quartey addressed the matter during an interview, dismissing the Minority’s claims as baseless and regrettable.

“It is rather unfortunate that MPs and of course a leader, Minority Leader and a former deputy minister of Interior could actually spew this falsehood into the public. MPs currently are about 137…it cannot be possible, it is not and it cannot be possible. I am rather disappointed in this approach…Yes, we are recruiting but it is not a secret recruitment. We haven’t even started. The agencies are going to send the eligibility criteria. I am sure by this week they will do that.”

“What we are saying rather is that look in the last couple of years people have gone to buy forms. And for some reasons, they could not gain admission into the security and intelligence agencies. So we thought it wise that we don’t have to advertise anymore for people to continuously pay monies because you have a certain number of people that per the clearance you have to recruit.”

“But I want to say on authority and I want to say again on authority that giving 30 slots to MPs is false. It is not true. It has never happened before and I am surprised that they want to go on this tangent,” he stated.

Vote for me to revamp TOR – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised to rejuvenate the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) should he win the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Mahama outlined plans for a collaborative effort between the private and public sectors to revive the nation’s struggling oil refinery.

During a meeting with stakeholders in the petroleum downstream sector in Accra, Mahama emphasized that TOR would receive dedicated attention under his forthcoming administration.

Acknowledging the inefficiencies associated with state-owned enterprises, Mahama expressed openness to private partnerships to reactivate and manage the refinery.

He stressed the importance of transparency in inviting private participation or partnerships.

“We need to look again at how we can bring the refinery back in place. But I do think that the problems we have with running that refinery is because it is a state-owned enterprise.

“And we all know the inefficiencies that go with state-owned enterprises. And so we are open to private partnership in terms of bringing that refinery back into operation and running it, but we think that whatever private partnership or private participation is invited, it must come through a transparent process.”

Your efforts to destroy me will not prevail – Bryan Acheampong to Ablakwa

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has addressed allegations made by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu, concerning attempts to purchase four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

During an interview with Joy FM on Tuesday, the Abetifi MP cautioned Ablakwa against efforts to tarnish his and Rock City Hotel’s reputations.

Ablakwa has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the sale of the four SSNIT-owned hotels to Dr. Acheampong.

He also calls for CHRAJ to halt and probe the transaction, arguing that the sale of SSNIT’s shares in the hotels lacked due process and violated procurement procedures.

Dr. Acheampong expressed his disappointment with Ablakwa’s actions, dismissing the allegations as baseless and a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation.

“You are just adding things together and trying to destroy me and trying to destroy Rock City. It is most unfair, it is ‘un-Ghanaian’ and you should stop it,” he said.

He urged the North Tongu MP to differentiate between him and his businesses and to ask genuine questions if necessary.

“If you have issues with a corporate entity, ask questions. I will never stop you and nobody will stop you from asking questions but in the tangent that you [Okudzeto Ablakwa] are going, it has nothing to do with that.

“I am a politician and I can be okay with it… but note that you are not speaking the truth and CHRAJ will confirm all this to you.”

NDC warns NIA against aiding illegal registration of voters in Pusiga

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong warning to the National Identification Authority (NIA) regarding the registration of illegal voters in Pusiga during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

The party asserts that such actions are against the country’s best interests and has promised to vehemently oppose any such attempts.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, expressed these concerns in a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 21.

He questioned the timing and location of the NIA’s current registration activities, particularly targeting border areas during the limited voter registration period.

In his post, Dr. Boamah challenged the rationale behind the NIA’s decision to register individuals at the borders concurrently with the voter registration exercise. He suggested that this move could be politically motivated and aimed at unfairly influencing the voter rolls.

“Stop this National Identification Authority’s last-minute manoeuvre to aid illegal voter registration in Pusiga. The National Identification Authority (NIA), headed by Bawumia’s bosom friend Ken Attafuah, has strangely chosen this voter registration period to embark on a special pilot program to issue Ghanacards to ‘Ghanaians living along the borders of Ghana and Burkina Faso in Pusiga’.”

The former Communications Minister called on the NIA to uphold fairness and impartiality in its operations as a state agency.

He emphasized that the NIA should not show favoritism toward any political party, ensuring that its activities do not compromise the integrity of the voter registration process.

NDC planning to hide ‘missing BVRs’ in our premises – NPP claims

The National Organizer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), has exposed an alleged scheme by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to implicate the NPP in the controversy surrounding missing Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits and Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

Nana B, citing credible sources, claims the NDC plans to plant some of the missing devices, which they allegedly possess, at various NPP offices across the country.

He asserts that the opposition party intends to invite selected media houses to these locations to capture footage of the missing devices purportedly found in NPP offices.

Nana B further disclosed that some NDC members had prior knowledge of the BVR kit theft and planned to steal components from 25 other BVRs. These components could be reassembled for voter registration.

The controversy began in April when the Electoral Commission (EC) handed over individuals suspected of stealing five laptops, part of the BVR kits, to the police. This followed allegations by the NDC about the missing kits.

The NDC Minority in Parliament first announced the missing kits on March 19, 2024, calling for urgent police action and expressing concerns about the upcoming December election.

On March 20, 2024, the EC clarified that it was five laptops, not the Biometric Verification Devices, that were stolen.

Despite this clarification, the NDC called on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to investigate the unaccounted-for BVR components to ensure fair December polls.

NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah claimed the stolen BVR kits could be used to illegally register voters for the December 7 general elections.

However, the EC assured Ghanaians that the missing laptops alone could not be used for voter registration or verification.

Nana B asserts that the NDC’s insistence on the stolen kits being used to tamper with elections is part of a scheme to hide the kits in NPP offices and accuse the EC of colluding with the governing party to rig the elections.

He likened this strategy to a 2008 incident in the Akwatia Constituency where NDC members allegedly planted stolen ballot boxes at an NPP executive’s house and then called for his arrest.

Given this situation, Nana B urges all NPP Constituency Executives, Regional Executives, and party stakeholders to remain vigilant around party offices to prevent potential intrusions by the NDC.

These unfolding events highlight the heightened tensions and accusations between the two major political parties as the December elections approach.

0% message, 100% Key Soap Concert Party – Koku Anyidoho reacts to Mahama’s video

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has likened a recent campaign address by the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama’s to the entire episode to a scene from the popular Ghanaian entertainment show “Key Soap Concert Party”.

Taking to the X platform, Mr Anyidoho stated that Mahama is fit for a comedian rather than a politician.

According to him, Ghanaian comedians like Nkomode, Waterproof, Ice Kenkey & co would be very proud of him for creating such humor in his campaign address.

He framed Mahama’s narration as a comedic performance rather than a serious political address.

However, Mr Anyidoho has indicated that chipping in an incident that past happened in the past was uncalled for.
“0% message: 100% Key Soap Concert Party. Nkomode, Waterproof, Ice Kenkey & co would be very proud of him,” he wrote.

Mr Anyidoho’s comment comes after Mahama shared an account of the incident that took place during the ballot counting process after the election regarding the selection of Speaker of Parliament for the 8th Parliament in 2021.

According to Mahama, ”drama unfolded as the commissioner began counting the ballots. She started with those marked for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). When it became evident that the NPP’s votes were insufficient, the party realized they had lost.

“As the commissioner moved on to counting the NDC’s ballots, the process took longer due to the large number of votes. It was during this extended counting period that an NPP MP, in a desperate move, reached into Alban Bagbin’s ballot box, grabbed some ballots, and began tearing them apart with his teeth.

“This outrageous act prompted immediate retaliation from the NDC MPs, who attacked and slapped him until he spat out the papers. Despite their efforts, the MP had already swallowed about three of the ballots”.

The State’s funds come nowhere close to what NPP has – NDC

The Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Gunu, has levied accusations against the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging their accumulation of wealth and self-enrichment.

According to Mr Gunu, the NPP’s financial status surpasses that of the state, rendering discussions on state funding for political parties irrelevant.

Addressing the media launch of the NDC’s fundraising code in Ho on Friday, May 17, Gunu urged the NDC to adopt strategic and innovative approaches to generate resources from its members and other supportive Ghanaians keen on seeing the party secure victory in the upcoming elections.

Gunu expressed, “Today, has anyone of you heard about the NPP talk about state funding for political parties in Ghana? No. because they are damn richer than even the state so they will not go there to talk about state funding of political parties.

“Now it is for us as a political party in opposition determined to win power to be more strategic, and innovative and come out with initiatives that can rake in resources from among our members and well-meaning Ghanains that want to see the NDC win power.”

With preparations underway for the 2024 general elections scheduled for December 7, the NDC is gearing up for the electoral contest.

  • NDC rejects offline voter registration

    NDC rejects offline voter registration

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) proposal to switch to offline voter registration if the current online system continues to face challenges.

Instead, the NDC has urged the Commission to promptly fix and restore data connectivity at all registration centers to ensure continuous registration, timely data verification, and enhanced transparency.

The registration exercise, which began on May 7, 2024, and is expected to conclude on May 27, has encountered numerous issues, including poor internet connectivity and malfunctioning biometric machines.

In response to these challenges, the Commission instructed its officers to switch to offline registration if necessary.

However, at a news conference in Accra on Thursday (May 16), NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey voiced strong opposition to the offline registration mode, labeling it as deficient.

He argued that offline registration could undermine the integrity of the electoral process, expose the system to exploitation, and introduce errors that could skew the outcome.

“This approach lacks real-time oversight, making it difficult to verify data promptly and transparently, thereby opening the door to potential biases and manipulations—particularly in targeted districts and regions to the disadvantage of the NDC. These actions compromise transparency and trust,” Kwetey stated.

He acknowledged that technical challenges are an inevitable aspect of any large-scale logistical operation, but emphasized that registering voters offline is not the ideal solution.

He urged the EC to promptly address the systemic issues to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the electoral process.

“We demand that the EC be proactive in implementing robust preventive measures rather than resorting to offline registration,” the General Secretary emphasized.

Kwetey also raised concerns about incorrect figures released by the Commission during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

For example, he noted that on May 11, 2024, the Party alerted the Commission to anomalies in figures published on its website and social media handles. Although the EC acknowledged the issue on May 12 and made corrections, Kwetey claimed the “corrected” figures still contained errors.

In the Oti Region, for instance, he alleged that the Day Two figure of 578 was “erroneously” swapped with the Day Three figure of 1,515. If these figures were aligned correctly, the Day Two national total would be 18,330, not 19,267, and Day Three’s total would be 49,553, not 48,616, as stated by the Commission.

“Similarly, the Day Three figure for Bono East in their corrected data is 771. However, this is incorrect. Bono East recorded 2,252 per our provisional data. This discrepancy will affect the total registered voters of 5,118 for Bono East for the four days as stated by the EC,” he added.

“This situation exemplifies what we term ‘transpositional rigging,’ where figures are shuffled between categories without affecting the overall total,” he explained.

He urged the EC to promptly rectify the inaccuracies in the data released on May 12, 2024, noting that such discrepancies could raise suspicions among parties.

“We expect a thorough review and correction of all figures to prevent further errors and uphold the integrity of our electoral process,” he stressed.

He assured Ghanaians that the NDC remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding all votes, promising that every ballot cast on December 7 would be accounted for.

Kwetey reiterated calls for an independent investigation into the missing biometric verification kits to eliminate any mistrust among stakeholders.

Special Prosecutor is being hunted because of Akufo-Addo’s corrupt nature – NDC

A prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Osei Akoto, has rebuked President Akufo-Addo over a petition seeking the removal of Kissi Agyebeng from his role as the Special Prosecutor.

Akoto believes that despite the petition reportedly submitted by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu, President Akufo-Addo is also implicated in the move to dismiss Agyebeng from his position.

He contends that the president aims to replace Agyebeng with someone more aligned with his agenda, ensuring compliance with directives to avoid future prosecutions.

In a statement on his social media page, he expressed, “I think the burgeoning removal of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng is a grand scheme by President Akufo-Addo and the Akyem Mafia to remove the man from office and fix a partisan apparatchik who will not prosecute them when Bawumia finally loses miserably,”

These remarks came after a JoyNews report revealed that President Akufo-Addo has forwarded a petition for Kissi Agyebeng’s removal as Special Prosecutor to the Chief Justice.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was delivered to the president by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu and subsequently transmitted to Justice Gertrude Torkonoo on May 6, 2024.

Allegations cited in Amidu’s petition include procurement irregularities in the acquisition of vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and alleged misconduct involving judges and the justice system.

Further accusations encompass violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and inappropriate staff appointments to the office.

Under Article 146 of the Constitution, the Chief Justice is currently evaluating whether there is adequate preliminary evidence to warrant the establishment of a committee to investigate Agyebeng’s potential impeachment.

“I think the burgeoning removal of the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng is a grand scheme by President Akufo-Addo and the Akyem Mafia to remove the man from office and fix a partisan apparatchik who will not prosecute them when Bawumia finally loses miserably,” he wrote on his X page.

A dollar would have hit GHS25 if NDC were in power – NPP

The Communication Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has claimed that Ghanaians would be purchasing a dollar at GH₵25 if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were in power.

This assertion follows the consistent rise of the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, which is currently above GH₵14 per US dollar. Several financial analysts have projected that the cedi will reach between GH₵16 and GH₵18 to the dollar.

Banking Consultant Dr. Richmond Atuahene, speaking on GHOne TV, mentioned that while Bloomberg and others predict the cedi will hit GH₵16 by the end of the year, he believes it will go even higher, suggesting Ghanaians should prepare to trade at GH₵18 to the dollar.

However, in an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Aboagye defended the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s handling of the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, considering the various challenges they have faced.

“I am very sure that if in August 2014 the dollar was going that fast, if the same managers were here, we would be buying the dollar at GH₵25. Can you tell me what happened in 2014 for the cedi to move from 1.2 to 3.9 cedis to the dollar?

“When you are running an organization, you run it with conditions, and the conditions will determine where you are moving your organization. In Ghana today, given the challenges we face in the global economy, if these managers were in charge between 2020 and now, we would be buying dollars at GH₵25 or GH₵30. Because in 2014, we had no reason to have the dollar where it was,” Mr. Aboagye stated.

He continued: “I can tell you what COVID-19 has done to us; I can tell you what the Ukraine-Russia war has done to us. I can tell you what the challenges in Asia have done to us. Can you tell me what was happening in 2014? Mention just one thing.”

Exercise caution, certain mistakes are beyond repair – Lecturer tells EC

A governance lecturer at Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) to exercise caution in their operations, particularly regarding errors in computation and collation of data.

The Electoral Commission has faced significant criticism for inaccurately tabulating the number of registrants on Days 2 and 3 of the ongoing limited registration exercise.

However, the EC has issued an apology for these errors, stating,“The Electoral Commission has corrected errors in the previously released daily voter registration numbers. The inaccuracies were in the cumulative totals for days two and three, though the regional numbers were correct. The Upper East’s day three’s total was mistakenly repeated for day four. These have been amended”.

During a panel discussion on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo,” Dr. Otchere-Ankrah expressed his dismay at the recurring errors made by the EC.

He emphasized that while making mistakes is human, it is crucial for the Commission to conduct thorough work to avoid errors that could lead to conflict.

“Some of the errors you commit are unpardonable…Though you are humans and can make mistakes but there are some mistakes that you do which cannot be understood. You have to be extremely careful!”, the lecturer advised.

Bawumia is going around joking, dancing and not campaigning – Dep. NDC National Youth Organiser

Deputy National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Osman Ayariga, has strongly criticized the campaign efforts of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), labeling them as a “comedy show.”

Mr Ayariga expressed his disdain for what he perceives as Bawumia’s lack of seriousness towards the country and its electorate, suggesting that the NPP candidate does not deserve further attention in the political arena.

“Bawumia’ campaign is not a campaign. it is a comedy show because the vice president is roaming about joking and once he is done joking, he starts dancing. When he made the promise to the churches, he came back to say he was joking.”

“A whole Vice President can say he is joking on a campaign platform in a comedy show. It is not a campaign. he is not serious,” he said.

The criticism follows recent remarks made by Dr. Bawumia regarding incentivizing churches rather than imposing taxes on them. Dr. Bawumia clarified that his statement was made in jest and had been misconstrued.

During a meeting with clergy members in the North East Region as part of his nationwide tour, the Vice President explained that his comments may have been misunderstood.

Despite Dr. Bawumia’s attempts to clarify his remarks, Ayariga remained steadfast in his criticism, asserting that the NPP candidate is unfit for the presidency.

According to Mr Ayariga, Dr. Bawumia’s promises are perceived as mere jokes, further solidifying his belief that Bawumia should not be considered a viable candidate for the highest office in the country.

I am very comfortable, confident in getting close to Christians – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia underscored the significance of peaceful coexistence among Ghanaians of diverse faiths and religions to foster national unity.

As the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia expressed his confidence and ease in engaging with Christians, citing the teachings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed as guiding principles.

“I don’t think that being a true Muslim means that you cannot get close to Christians. Nor do I see how being a true Christian means you cannot get close to Muslims,” he said.

“Prophet Mohammed instructed Muslims to get closer to Christians among all the religions and faiths of this world. That is what the Prophet Mohammed said, and so I am very comfortable and confident in getting close to Christians.

“My brothers and sisters are Christians, and I cannot say that I will not get close to them,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted Prophet Mohammed’s teachings, encouraging Muslims to build connections with Christians. He emphasized his comfort and confidence in building relationships with Christians, as many of his acquaintances belong to that faith.

Addressing clergy members in the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia stressed the ongoing need to promote peaceful coexistence among various religious groups in Ghana.

He noted that such harmony is essential in thwarting the infiltration and activities of jihadists, who exploit discord among followers of different faiths.

“There are many people who are uncomfortable with us Muslims getting closer to Christians, and that is how jihadists and extremists benefit. We are a peaceful country, and we always get closer, so let us keep it that way,” he urged.

Despite your defeats in 2008, 2012, Mahama handed over to you – NDC to Akufo-Addo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially responded to President Akufo-Addo’s recent remarks regarding his reluctance to hand over power to former president John Dramani Mahama, whom he defeated twice.

Akufo-Addo reiterated this stance on two occasions in the past few weeks, first during an event in the northern region and later in Doboro, Greater Accra Region.

In a statement issued on May 16, 2024, NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey reminded Akufo-Addo of the peaceful transfer of power he experienced from Mahama after losing two elections himself.

“In an unprecedented declaration, we have a sitting President who, despite being the beneficiary of a peaceful transfer of power, now declares his unwillingness to hand over power to someone he previously defeated. This raises concerns about the integrity of our democratic principles.

“President Akufo-Addo, basking in the fleeting glory of the power he literally begged Ghanaians for, seems to have forgotten that he, too, was defeated in the 2008 and 2012 elections, yet power was graciously transferred to him in 2017,@ Kwetey said during a press briefing.

“’Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.’ This revelation speaks volumes about his intentions and the potential peril to our nation’s stability. What the NPP, unfortunately fails to understand is that the NDC stands prepared and vigilant, ready to ensure free and transparent elections, even at the risk of our own lives,” he stressed.

Kwetey emphasized that Akufo-Addo’s comments reveal his intentions and pose a potential threat to the nation’s stability. He reiterated the NDC’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, even at personal risk.

The press conference, initially intended to address issues related to the Electoral Commission and the ongoing Limited Voters Registration Exercise, also highlighted the challenges faced during the process.

Akufo-Addo, who lost his first presidential bid in 2008 and again in 2012, eventually assumed office after winning the 2016 elections.

Mahama, on the other hand, lost his reelection bid in 2016 and 2020.

He is the NDC’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as his main opponent.

I will sack any appointee who engages in illegal mining – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that he will require any of his appointees involved in mining activities to resign if he is elected president in the upcoming December elections.

The former President emphasized that his appointees will need to focus solely on their primary responsibilities of national development.

During his speech at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Mahama affirmed that none of his appointees would participate in illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Mahama also committed to establishing a sustainable mining scheme in all mining communities, which would be distinct from the current community mining scheme.

This new initiative would deeply involve traditional leadership in the licensing process to ensure proper regulation of mining activities, should he be elected president.

“It will differ in all forms from the existing community mining scheme, which has undeniably become a conduit for enriching party chairmen, DCEs and other politically connected individuals.

“Indeed, in my government, if you are a minister, a DCE or an official and you undertake mining activity, I will ask you to resign and go and do the mining. You either choose to be a public official or choose to be a businessperson running a mine.”

Think twice before voting for Mahama, he has nothing to offer – Bawumia

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has urged Ghanaians to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagebearer, John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December 7 polls.

Addressing clergy members in the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of not electing John Dramani Mahama, citing concerns over his potential single-term presidency and subsequent lack of accountability.

Expressing his commitment to an 8-year term, Dr. Bawumia outlined his dedication to fulfilling promises within the initial four years to earn another term, contrasting this with what he perceives as Mahama’s likelihood to disappear from public view after a single term.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks underscore his belief that voters will receive greater accountability from him compared to his opponent, John Dramani Mahama.

“For me, because I am looking for an 8-year term, I have to work very hard in the first four years so that when I come back, you will say, oh yes, you did what you said you were going to do. We will give you another four years.

“But for my main opponent [John Dramani Mahama], when you give him four years, that is it. He doesn’t have to come back again. You won’t see him again, especially after he takes his honeymoon, you will not see him after four years.

“So you will get more accountability from me than from him.”

EC is miscalculating registration figures just to rig December polls – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) and its chairperson, Jean Mensa, of consistently providing inaccurate figures in crucial electoral processes.

The NDC expressed disappointment that the EC seemingly failed to learn from the errors of the 2020 Presidential election results, which required multiple corrections after the declaration.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Kwetey, addressed the media on Thursday, May 16, 2024, suggesting that the EC might be testing a rigging strategy by intentionally misrepresenting registration figures.

The NDC also criticized the EC for only addressing specific discrepancies raised by them instead of conducting a comprehensive review of all figures.

“The EC might be testing the waters with their rigging strategy by deliberately misrepresenting and miscalculating registration figures. Our prompt detection and exposure of these egregious errors should serve as a clear warning to the EC about the vigilance of the NDC,” he said.

“We are fully prepared to safeguard the sanctity of the upcoming elections. We expect the EC to now firmly renounce any intention, if it exists, to collude with the failed NPP government to rig the election.

“Any such attempts will be decisively thwarted,” read part of Fifi Kwetey’s address to the media.

“Initially, we pointed out only a fraction of the errors for the EC to reassess their data. Intriguingly, they corrected only those specific discrepancies we highlighted, without conducting a thorough review of all figures.

“It will astonish you to learn that even their revised figures are still riddled with errors and need further corrections,” he added.

Richard Ahiagbah accuses NDC of promoting, benefiting from galamsey

Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of supporting illegal mining activities.

He made the allegation when he dismissed John Dramani Mahama’s promise to use Artificial Intelligence to combat illegal mining if elected president as mere political rhetoric.

Mr Ahiagbah stated on his X handle that it would be impossible to effectively tackle galamsey with Mahama as president.

“The NDC are promoters of galamsey. Therefore, H.E Mahama’s promise to use AI-powered plan to combat galamsey is a vote-seeking gimmick. Galamsey is an existential problem that requires inputs from all strata of society to combat. Resolving the galamsey menace is impossible with H.E John Mahama and the NDC because they are promoters and beneficiaries of galamsey.”

During an address at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, John Dramani Mahama stated that his government would utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI) to locate all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, track excavators, and geofence all concessions.

This approach aims to coordinate and monitor activities within the small-scale mining sector to reduce environmental destruction.

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), referenced several instances to support his assertion that fighting galamsey under a Mahama administration would be ineffective.

He cited a 2020 video of Kwaku Boahen, then Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC, promising a “golden age of galamsey” to voters in mining communities, as well as Mahama’s promise to free galamsey convicts in 2020 at a campaign event in Mpohor.

We will hand over peacefully should NDC beat us in 2024 elections – Henry Quartey

Minister for Interior-designate, Henry Quartey, has reaffirmed the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to democratic principles in the event of electoral defeat amidst growing concerns from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the peaceful transition of power.

The opposition’s worries were sparked by recent comments made by President Akufo-Addo, which raised doubts about the incumbent government’s readiness to peacefully transfer power if they do not succeed in the December 7 elections.

National Chairman of the NDC, Asiedu Nketia, expressed these concerns during a press conference, urging the NPP to prioritize a smooth transition for the nation’s stability.

In response, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey addressed the media in Accra on Wednesday, May 15, reassuring the public of the NPP’s unwavering dedication to ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

He stressed that regardless of the election outcome, the NPP is committed to upholding democratic norms and facilitating a peaceful transfer of power, in accordance with Ghana’s democratic principles.

“As a politician, as a political party, it is our hope, it is our wish, it is our belief that by the grace of God, the good people of this country, the good work that we have done in infrastructure and in other interventions, they will give us another mandate,” he said.

He also noted that the NPP is working assiduously to secure another term.

“Perish the thought, and I say again, perish the thought, If they decide to give their mandate to somebody, we will handover peacefully and walk away, go to the drawing board and come back Insha Allah. But I know that the grace of God abounds and so we shall break the 8,” he said.

I will employ AI to eradicate galamsey when you vote for me – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the battle against illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey, if he emerges victorious in the 2024 election.

Addressing attendees at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small-scale Mining at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani on May 15, 2024, Mahama outlined his strategy of harnessing cutting-edge technology to confront one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental dilemmas.

He stressed that, if elected in the forthcoming general elections, his administration would deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect and monitor all small-scale mining and galamsey activities.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, Mahama stated, “We will introduce and encourage technological innovation to improve capacity for coordinated monitoring of the small-scale mining sector and reduce environmental impact”.

Mahama advocated for the establishment of a dedicated fund aimed at providing a reservoir of mining equipment.
This fund, he asserted, would bolster sustainable mining practices, ensuring that mining communities operate with minimal environmental harm.

Furthermore, he elaborated on the incorporation of AI technologies to pinpoint all small-scale mining and galamsey operations, monitor excavators, and establish geofences around concessions to prevent unauthorized mining, particularly in sensitive areas such as water bodies.

The children are not your cheerleaders – NDC rants over students involvement in Bawumia campaign

Main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticised the use of students to welcome Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the North East Region, denouncing it as exploitative.

In a statement, the NDC condemned the exploitation of valuable learning time for political purposes, asserting that such actions should be condemned by all educators in the country.

Dr. Bawumia, who is also the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), embarked on a campaign tour in the North East Region on Monday.

Upon his arrival in Walewale, he was greeted by supporters, including senior high school students dressed in their school uniforms.

However, the NDC argued that involving schoolchildren during school hours was inappropriate, as Dr. Bawumia’s visit was political rather than official.

The NDC’s Walewale Constituency Communications Officer accused the NPP of pressuring headteachers to assemble students along the streets of Walewale to welcome their flagbearer.

“It is deeply concerning that headteachers are coerced into diverting students from their classrooms to serve as cheerleaders for political campaigns. Parents entrust their children to schools with the expectation that they will receive quality education, not be used as political pawns,” he said.

He urged the leadership to join in condemning the use of students as political party cheerleaders, noting that “schools are meant to be sanctuaries of learning, not platforms for political theatrics.”

The NDC Communication Officer added that “it is unjustifiable to sacrifice the educational development of students for the political agenda of the Vice President, H.E. Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.”

Political neophytes – Koku Anyidoho slams people calling Bawumia “a joke”

Former Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has criticized certain party members for undermining the campaign strategies of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Anyidoho pointed out parallels between this situation and the skepticism faced by the NPP during the candidacy of professor John Fiifi Atta-Mills in 2008, suggesting a recurring pattern in Ghana’s political history.

In a post on the X platform, Mr Anyidoho, renowned for his political insight, emphasized the effectiveness of Bawumia’s campaign methods.

“When I hear political neophytes in NDC saying Bawumia is “joking” with this type of very effective campaign, it reminds of how the NPP sneered at Candidate Atta-Mills when we did this in 2008 and won. Tables have turned & history has a very interesting way of repeating itself,” he wrote.

He expressed disappointment at some NDC members, particularly those inexperienced in politics, for downplaying the importance of Bawumia’s efforts.

Mr Anyidoho urged fellow NDC members not to underestimate Bawumia’s initiatives, highlighting the potential consequences of dismissing them as insignificant.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Vice President of Ghana and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, commenced a tour of the Bono Region.

During his visit to Sunyani and Fiapre, Dr. Bawumia engaged with a variety of constituents, including youth, traders, taxi drivers, and shop owners.

He expressed contentment with the productive interactions and conveyed appreciation for the warm reception he received.

Dr. Bawumia also shared his vision for Ghana beyond 2024, welcoming suggestions and proposals from constituents and emphasizing his dedication to fulfilling their aspirations.

‘Forced’ to eat fufu without soup – Asiedu Nketia on commissioning of uncompleted Kumasi Airport

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised concerns about the recent commissioning of the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi by President Akufo-Addo.

Despite the elaborate ceremony, Nketia expressed confusion over the decision to inaugurate a project that is still under construction.

He emphasised the imprudence of opening a facility that is not yet fully operational and suggested that President Akufo-Addo should have waited until the airport was completed before declaring it open to the public.

“If it had been completed, aeroplanes would have landed there. It’s like making fufu without soup and asking us to eat,” he said in an Instagram video posted by Nana Yaa Brefo, host of the Yen Nsempa Morning show on Onua FM.

“There are bulldozers working everywhere, and you’re telling me it’s finished,” he exclaimed, questioning the legitimacy of the commissioning ceremony.

According to the NDC Chairman, the premature commissioning of the airport reflects a political agenda aimed at garnering favour rather than addressing the practical needs of the people.

“I’ve already mentioned that the president’s judgement should be examined,” Nketia remarked pointedly.

On May 10, 2024, the Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially opened.
The airport’s interior is meticulously arranged into various operational areas, with many staircase walls crafted from glass to provide a visually appealing ambiance.

Welcoming visitors at the entrance is the sign “Nante Yie,” symbolising a “safe journey.”

This airport is expected to elevate the international profile of the Ashanti Region and contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the local community.

  • Collins Dauda granted bail after arrest for Kukuom voter registration violence

Collins Dauda granted bail after arrest for Kukuom voter registration violence

Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Collins Dauda, has been granted bail after being arrested for his alleged involvement in disturbances at a registration center on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

According to a police statement over the weekend, the NDC MP was detained in connection with a recent disturbance during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one person was injured and hospitalized.

Confirming the bail to Citi News, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, said the legislator was granted bail immediately and maintained that Collins Dauda did not commit any crime.

“He [Collins Dauda] was immediately granted bail. And so he is currently on bail. And the police say that they are conducting their investigation, so he will hear from them. At no point was the Honorable Collins Dauda present at the scene.

“He was not there [at the scene] because he was busy in his constituency monitoring the registration process. So it came to us as a surprise when the police issued that statement, creating the impression as though Collins Dauda had committed a crime when they knew that he was not even at the scene when the said incident happened.”

Sammy Gyamfi further condemned the arrest and urged the police to focus their efforts on apprehending the true perpetrators of the disturbance.

“So we condemn what the police did and we are calling on them to focus on arresting the real perpetrators of that chaos, of those criminal actions. The NPP hoodlums and bandits were led by a known NPP bandit called Anointing.

“He is a notorious guy in the area, everybody knows him, the police know him, they know where he lives. They should focus on arresting and prosecuting those hoodlums who went to the voting centre to harass, intimidate, and brutalise innocent citizens.”

Mahama eradicated schools under trees before leaving office – Apaak

Member of Parliament for Builsa South , Dr. Clement Apaak, has highlighted the alarming reality of over 5,000 schools currently operating under trees in Ghana.

He criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for allowing this situation to persist, contrasting it with the efforts of the previous Mahama administration, which he claimed had nearly eradicated schools under trees.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues, Dr. Apaak underscored another pressing issue: the shortage of furniture in basic schools, affecting approximately 1 million pupils who are forced to study while seated on the floor.

He emphasized that Former President John Dramani Mahama, his party’s flagbearer, would prioritize addressing this furniture deficit to improve the learning environment in basic schools.

“What that means is that about one million of our wards go to school every day and they have to sit on the floor or sit on blocks to study. That clearly cannot be acceptable.”

  • We won’t let you protect NPP thugs who attack our members during voter registration exercise – NDC tells Police

We won’t let you protect NPP thugs who attack our members during voter registration exercise – NDC tells Police

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the Ghana Police Service against shielding members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who are caught disrupting public peace during the ongoing voter registration exercise.

This comes after the arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, for his alleged involvement in a violent scene at the Kukuom voter registration centre, an action the NDC has condemned.

According to the NDC, Mr Duada was busy monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency.

The party noted that the violence was orchestrated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and that NDC members were forced to defend themselves against attacks on their members.

It therefore cautioned the Police against failing to uphold fairness and justice as they carry out their mandate.

“We wish to remind the Ghana Police Service of their responsibility to protect all stakeholders in the ongoing voter registration exercise. The Ghana Police must display professionalism and impartiality in maintaining law and order, and be fair to all actors in the political space.

“We cannot accept a situation where the Police choose to watch on and take little action against NPP thugs who unleash unprovoked violence on NDC supporters in broad daylight.”

The NDC also noted that it is “concerned by the widespread violent incidents across the country in which NDC supporters have been at the receiving end of unprovoked brutalities, intimidation and harassments from the ruling New Patriotic Party, as happened in Adugyama in the Ahafo-ano South East Constituency in the Ashanti region, few days ago.”

“Even though we in the NDC will never initiate any such attacks, let it be known, that our supporters reserve the right to defend themselves against any violence or attacks,” the party added in a statement.

    1. Collins Dauda never incited chaos during voter registration at Kukuom – NDC

Collins Dauda never incited chaos during voter registration at Kukuom – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has responded to the arrest of Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda, concerning disturbances during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise in Kukuom.

Despite the Ghana Police Service’s announcement of his involvement, the NDC asserts that Dauda committed no crime.

They condemned his arrest and questioned the police’s professionalism in handling the matter.

“The NDC condemns in no uncertain terms the unprofessional haste of the Ghana Police Service to publish the so-called arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, and create the impression all over the media as though he has committed a crime. For emphasis, Hon. Collins Dauda has committed no crime. The allegation by the Police that he was involved in some disturbances at the ongoing voter registration in Kukuom is palpably false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves”.

“We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration center on Saturday, 11th May, 2024. Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his Constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency,” a statement signed by its National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi noted.

According to the NDC, the chaos was caused by New Patriotic Party (NPP)-affiliated thugs who blocked the registration center, preventing NDC supporters from registering and engaging in violence.

They claim Dauda was not present during the incident, as he was monitoring registration elsewhere in his constituency.

The NDC further accuses the police of bias and urges them to uphold impartiality and protect all stakeholders in the registration process.

In a detailed statement, the NDC provides a timeline of events, alleging attacks on their supporters by NPP thugs and highlighting instances of police inaction.

They emphasize their commitment to peace and adherence to the law while condemning violence and advocating for fair treatment from law enforcement. The statement is signed by Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC.

Below is the full NDC statement

NDC RESPONDS TO ARREST OF THE MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR ASUTIFI SOUTH, HON. COLLINS DAUDA IN CONNECTION WITH ONGOING VOTER REGISTRATION EXERCISE.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken note of a statement by the Ghana Police Service, that it has arrested the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda for his alleged involvement in some disturbances at a Voter Registration Center at Kukuom in the Asunafo South constituency in the Ahafo Region.

      Having had the benefit of the facts surrounding the said incident, the party wishes to respond as follows;

      1. On or about 10:00am on Saturday, 11th May, 2024, a group of thugs belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party numbering about 40, besieged the Asunafo South Constituency registration center at Kukuom.
      2. Wearing face masks and dressed in what looked like military apparel, these NPP thugs unleashed violence on the registration center. They attacked and chased away perceived first-time NDC voters numbering about 150, who were in a queue waiting to be registered.
      3. These hooded NPP thugs who were led by one “Anointing”, threatened the accredited NDC agent, Police Officers and other observers, insisting that they will not allow the first-time voters to be registered. The attacks persisted from 10:00am until 3:00pm on that fateful day.
      4. At about 3:00pm, the Police at Kukuom called for reinforcement from the Regional Police Command at Goaso. This did not however deter the NPP bandits, who continued to engage in heated verbal exchanges with the Police at the scene, insisting that they will not allow the perceived supporters of the NDC to register.
      5. In the midst of the pandemonium, one Daniel Arthur, a known NDC member and the Assembly Member for the Denyase Electoral Area: Abu, the NDC Coordinator for Asarekrom Electoral Area as well as the NDC’s registration agent at the center, were severely brutalized by the NPP thugs.
      6. Upon hearing about the ongoing chaos, some NDC supporters, rushed to the scene to ascertain the situation for themselves and offer some support to the NDC supporters who were under attack. Upon seeing the NDC supporters, some of the NPP thugs bolted. Calm was restored at the center for sometime, allowing some of the harassed supporters of the NDC to register.
      7. In a sudden turn of events, one of the NPP thugs drove across and blocked the road when the Asutifi South NDC supporters were leaving the center. He then pulled a gun and began to shoot indiscriminately at the NDC supporters in their vehicle. At this point, the NDC supporters in exercise of their right to self-defence, shot back to deter the thugs. No one sustained gunshot injuries.
      8. This fact was corroborated by the Police in their investigative report read to Hon. Collins Dauda, MP for Asutifi South, in the presence of Hon. Eric Opoku, MP for Asunafo South, at a meeting on the morning of Sunday, 12th May, 2024.
      9. We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration center on Saturday, 11th May, 2024. Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his Constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency.
      10. Several NDC supporters who were hospitalised after being brutalized by the NPP thugs, have since lodged official complaints with the Kukuom Police.
      11. The NDC condemns in no uncertain terms the unprofessional haste of the Ghana Police Service to publish the so-called arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, and create the impression all over the media as though he has committed a crime. For emphasis, Hon. Collins Dauda has committed no crime. The allegation by the Police that he was involved in some disturbances at the ongoing voter registration in Kukuom is palpably false and must be treated with the contempt it deserves.
      12. The National Democratic Congress reiterates our commitment to peace in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise. We are a law-abiding political party committed to respecting the laws of the country. Our Parliamentary Candidates, agents and supporters throughout the country have so far comported themselves in the ongoing exercise, even in the face of extreme provocation and in some cases, violent attacks.
      13. We are however concerned by the widespread violent incidents across the country in which NDC supporters have been at the receiving end of unprovoked brutalities, intimidation and harassments from the ruling New Patriotic Party, as happened in Adugyama in the Ahafo-ano South East Constituency in the Ashanti region, few days ago.
      14. We wish to remind the Ghana Police Service of their responsibility to protect all stakeholders in the ongoing voter registration exercise. The Ghana Police must display professionalism and impartiality in maintaining law and order, and be fair to all actors in the political space.
      15. We cannot accept a situation where the Police choose to watch on and take little action against NPP thugs who unleash unprovoked violence on NDC supporters in broad daylight.
      16. Even though we in the NDC will never initiate any such attacks, let it be known, that our supporters reserve the right to defend themselves against any violence or attacks.

Upon seeing the NDC supporters, some of the NPP thugs bolted. Calm was restored at the center for sometime, allowing some of the harassed supporters of the NDC to

He then pulled a gun and began to shoot indiscriminately at the NDC supporters in their vehicle. At this point, the NDC supporters in exercise of their right to self-defence, shot back to deter the thugs. No one sustained gunshot injuries.

Meanwhile, Mr Dauda has been detained in connection with a recent disruption during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one individual was injured and hospitalized.

The NDC has condemned the Ghana Police Service’s arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, stating that it lacks merit.

2024 elections: I will not choose a co-driver over a humble mate – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has recently shared his viewpoint favoring leadership traits such as humility and patience over impulsiveness.

He conveyed this through a vivid analogy involving a scenario of a driver’s mate aspiring to assume the driver’s role.

In a Twitter post, Anyidoho articulated his perspective, highlighting the preference for a modest mate willing to wait for their turn to drive, as opposed to an arrogant one who considers themselves superior to the driver.

“I prefer a humble mate who admits he wants to wait for his time to drive, to an arrogant mate who says he is a co-driver and believed he was more important than the driver…” Anyidoho stated in his tweet.

“The man who prides himself in being a co-driver, so he considered himself to be better than his boss and not a humble mate, took over and messed up all the driving formula. Damn!” he wrote.

This metaphorical narrative suggests a caution against overeagerness and the consequences of disregarding hierarchy and experience.

Mr Anyidoho’s analogy is interpreted by political observers as a commentary on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former President John Dramani Mahama, representing the eager mate and the presumptuous co-driver, respectively, in the context of the 2024 elections.

Despite his affiliation with the NDC, Anyidoho has openly thrown his support behind Bawumia’s candidacy, emphasizing the importance of humility and respect for leadership succession.

Arresting Collins Dauda was unnecessary, he was not close to the scene – NDC tells Police

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service’s arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, calling it unjustified.

Mr Dauda has been detained in connection with a recent disturbance during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one person was injured and hospitalized.

Preliminary police investigations implicated Mr Dauda in the unrest that occurred during the registration process on Saturday, May 11.

However, in a press release issued on Monday, May 13, and signed by the NDC’s Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, the party vehemently denied the allegations against Mr. Dauda.

The NDC claims that the violence was orchestrated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and that NDC members were forced to defend themselves against attacks on their members.

The NDC is demanding the immediate release of Collins Dauda and is urging law enforcement to apprehend the actual perpetrators responsible for the disturbances.

“We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration centre on Saturday, 11th May 2024.”

“Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Commissioning of Kumasi Airport is similar to serving fufu devoid of soup – Asiedu Nketiah tells govt

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to commission the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi while it is still under construction.

He questioned the wisdom of inaugurating a project that is not yet finished, suggesting that waiting for its completion would have been more prudent than rushing for political gain.

In a video shared by Nana Yaa Brefo on Instagram, Asiedu Nketiah expressed his disbelief, stating, “If it had been completed, aeroplanes would have landed there. It’s like making fufu without soup and asking us to eat. I’ve already mentioned that the president’s judgment should be examined.”There are bulldozers working everywhere, and you’re telling me it’s finished,” he stated.

He emphasized the need to examine the president’s judgment, pointing out ongoing construction activities at the site.

Regarding the commissioning of the airport, the splendid Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi was officially opened on May 10, 2024.

TV3 and GTV Ghana showcased the airport’s interior through a video, highlighting the newly installed facilities available for public use.

The interior design features strategically organized operational sections, with glass walls on staircases to enhance visual aesthetics. Visitors are greeted with the welcoming sign “Nante Yie,” meaning “safe journey,” at the entrance.

The airport is expected to elevate the Ashanti Region’s international profile and contribute to the local economy’s prosperity.

The launch event was attended by various stakeholders and government agencies, marking the facility’s official commencement of public operations.

During his address, President Akufo-Addo expressed his satisfaction with the project’s completion and addressed skeptics who doubted its realization.

We will deliver our mandate, trust us – EC tells NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have faith in its dedication and capability to fulfill its responsibilities effectively.

The NDC has expressed concerns regarding the EC’s operations, particularly regarding the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, reports of missing laptops, and the request for serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi TV on Saturday, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services at the EC, sought to reassure the NDC and the public.

He stated, “…They should trust us. As we have been doing, we will continue to do it and when 2024 is done whatever the results will be, you will agree that we have done a good job.”

He responded to the NDC’s concerns regarding the transparency and integrity of the electoral process, including the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

“…I want them to relax. They should train their agents very well. They should follow the registration and pick all the data with respect to the start of day record and end of day record. We are doing it for 21 days.

“So, if you put all your end of day records for 21 days it should give you the total number of people who were registered during this exercise,” he added.

          6. EC’s missing BVRs could be a ploy for illegal registration – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has voiced concerns regarding the disappearance of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits from the Electoral Commission (EC), suggesting potential misuse for illegal voter registration in the upcoming December 7 elections.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC’s National Chairman, expressed suspicions about the stolen kits possibly being utilized for unauthorized voter registration.

He questioned how hardware could be stolen under CCTV surveillance and raised concerns about the potential theft of activation codes.

“That remains our suspicion…If hardware can be stolen under CCTV surveillance, why not the activation code?” he asked.

“to resist the EC’s clandestine attempts aimed at diminishing transparency in the voter registration exercise.”

“Let me emphasize that our agents must activate the party’s super hi-tech application systems to transmit all serial numbers of BVR kits in their districts and electoral areas to the National Elections and IT Directorate of the party, with or without the approval of the EC” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Accra, Mr. Nketia instructed party registration agents nationwide to resist any covert actions by the EC aimed at undermining transparency in the voter registration process.

He emphasized the activation of the party’s advanced application systems to transmit all BVR kit serial numbers to the party’s Elections and IT Directorate, regardless of EC approval.

Faced with the looming threat of a compromised voter register, the party directed its agents to record the serial numbers of all deployed BVR kits during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

This measure aimed to trace and identify registration data origins and track authorized EC officials operating BVR kits to prevent clandestine registration attempts.

Mr. Nketia highlighted the party’s determination to safeguard the 2024 elections by documenting each BVR kit’s serial numbers.

He underscored instructions for agents to record replacement BVR kit serial numbers and usage details in case of malfunction during registration.

Expressing surprise at the EC’s opposition to their preventive measures, Mr. Nketia questioned the motive behind denying NDC registration agents the recording of BVR kit serial numbers. He urged transparency, suggesting that if the EC had nothing to conceal, political parties should be permitted to record BVR kit serial numbers during the limited voter registration exercise.

Mr. Nketia pointed out the routine recording of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) serial numbers on election day and questioned the rationale behind prohibiting BVR kit serial number recording.

EC is like other institutions, it is not immune to challenges – NPP to NDC

A member of the National Communication Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Saaka Salia, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of habitually criticizing the Electoral Commission (EC) over minor matters.

Mr. Salia emphasized that the EC, like any institution, faces challenges and is not immune to them.

He referenced the ongoing limited voter registration exercise, where the NDC instructed its party agents to document the serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

In response, the EC declined the NDC’s request, citing security concerns.

The NDC Chairman, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, instructed party agents to record the serial numbers of replaced BVR kits during registration.

“Our agents also have our firm instructions that if BVR kits malfunction and are replaced during registration, they should duly record the serial numbers of the new BVR kits and the date and time of use,”he added.

However, Saaka Salia, speaking on TV3’s New Day, defended the EC, suggesting that the NDC’s criticisms aim to discredit the Commission intentionally.

Regarding technical challenges, the EC directed its District Officers to switch to offline mode to expedite the registration process. They assured stakeholders that if there’s a backlog of voters, the registration period will be extended beyond the May 27 deadline.

Salia acknowledged the EC’s efforts to address challenges and improve the registration process, attributing some issues to factors beyond the Commission’s control, such as internet connectivity problems. He criticized the NDC for consistently attacking the EC, even over trivial matters.

Police arrest Mpohor NDC constituency secretary, another for allegedly registering minors

Police in the Western Region have arrested Bernard Afful, the Mpohor Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Rojer Miller, the proprietor of Voice of Christ Preparatory School, for allegedly registering minors in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Afful, aged 59, and Miller, 33, were arrested for aiding and abetting in the registration of some students of the Voice of Christ Preparatory School suspected to be minors.

According to reports, the police received intelligence that the proprietor had registered his son, Gildolf Andoh, aged 16, and four others in the ongoing registration.

The police conducted a search at the school and found five voter ID cards with names; Gildolf Andoh, Christabel Obeng Damoah, Christiana Assan, Spendilove Nana Boah, and Edward Ntiakoh.

Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to acting as guarantors for the five students. The two were detained to assist in investigations and have since been arraigned before court for prosecution.
