NDC is not a viable option, they are very dangerous – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has urged Ghanaians to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections, describing it as a dangerous political party.

He made these remarks while addressing traders at the Kejetia Market, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to Ghana’s development.

Mr Agyapong dismissed claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost its connection with the people of the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold for the party.

He pointed to the enthusiastic reception that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, received during his recent visit to the region as evidence of the party’s sustained popularity.

He warned against supporting the NDC, labeling it as “dangerous” and urged voters to remember the NDC’s past governance.

“As a businessman and politician, I understand both politics and business. I acknowledge the current hardships, but when you vote, remember that the NDC is not a viable option—they are very dangerous. Be cautious,” he warned.

He highlighted the achievements of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, particularly the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has significantly benefited many students.

Mr Agyapong emphasized that even in developed countries, governments do not provide uniforms for students, highlighting the government’s efforts in education.

He urged voters to recognize the progress made under the current administration and to support Dr Bawumia in the upcoming elections.

“Under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, we’ve covered fees under Free SHS and even provided uniforms for your children.

“Even in developed countries, governments don’t buy uniforms for students. So, I urge all of you to recognise that even developed countries are facing economic crises. Don’t be deceived by false promises. Remember the NDC’s past governance. Let’s all support Bawumia,” he said.

Next NDC govt won’t tolerate looters or nation wreckers – Fifi Kwetey

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning to its members against fostering a culture of corruption within the government.

They emphasized that being in power should focus on bringing sustainable development to the people, rather than enriching a select few.

Speaking at the 32nd Anniversary celebration and flag raising ceremony, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary, underscored the need for an NDC government to prioritize selflessness, patriotism, value for money, and accountability to the citizens.

He said: “Cadres may go, cadres may come, but the revolution of good governance, development, probity, accountability and integrity have come to stay and, therefore, the Party must be sacrosanct.

“We must ensure this Party becomes stronger and not have people in government whose thinking is how much money can we make. It must always be Ghana ahead of the Party and Party ahead of individuals,” the former MP said.

Mr. Kwetey, a former two-term Member of Parliament for Ketu South, highlighted the importance of commitment and sacrifice in achieving these goals, drawing from the example of past and present cadres.

He stressed the enduring principles of good governance, development, probity, accountability, and integrity within the party, asserting that the NDC must remain unwavering in its dedication to these ideals.

Chairman of the NDC, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, urged party members to remain focused on winning the 2024 general election.

The NDC was formed in 1992, following a rigorous process of party formation led by Yusufu Ali, involving nationalists and revolutionists across all districts and regions.

Their efforts culminated in the acceptance of an interim certificate from the Electoral Commission on June 10, 1992, at the Art Centre, with the permanent certificate officially granted on July 27, 1992.

  • Your cowardice has been exposed – NDC slams GAF on ‘biased’ remark over call on attack of soldiers

Your cowardice has been exposed – NDC slams GAF on ‘biased’ remark over call on attack of soldiers

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their response to a viral video involving Ernest Frimpong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary hopeful, inciting attacks against soldiers patrolling illegal mining sites.

The controversy erupted after a video surfaced showing Frimpong advising individuals, believed to be illegal miners, to resist military officers. Following the video’s release, a soldier was reportedly attacked, raising concerns about the security and stability of such patrols.

In its response, the GAF issued a statement urging the public to refrain from attacking soldiers. However, the NDC found this response insufficient, expecting a more direct condemnation of Frimpong’s actions. The party’s press release questioned the integrity of the GAF, suggesting that its stance may have been influenced by political affiliations.

“Unless the GAF, once the most disciplined and revered institution in Ghana, has become compromised along political lines, one wonders why Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie (Director General, Public Relations) would conceal the detail of calling out the person(s) in the viral video and warning them directly instead of displaying cowardice by cautioning the general public,” the NDC stated.

The NDC warned that the Armed Forces risk losing public respect and could endanger the nation’s security if such incidents continue unchecked.

The party emphasized the need for the GAF to address threats at their source and report them to relevant authorities, such as the police, to prevent tragedies like the Major Mahama incident.

“Rather than spending time cautioning the general public in your five-paragraph release on information they already know, be bold, confident, courageous, and assertively stern in calling out and cautioning Mr. Ernest Frimpong. He called for the attacks on your men, not the general public,” the NDC added.

The party also urged the GAF to demonstrate its commitment to the rule of law by lodging a formal report with the police if it has not already done so.

With the upcoming elections, the NDC stressed the importance of addressing such red flags to prevent civilian-military confrontations and promote peace and unity.

In response to the controversy, Ernest Frimpong retracted his comments, asserting that they were taken out of context. He admitted to being the person in the video but denied engaging with illegal miners, claiming he was addressing miners within the community.

The GAF, in its statement, reiterated that calls to attack soldiers are unlawful and pose significant risks to security. The release also highlighted that soldiers have the right to self-defense, warning that those who choose to attack military personnel may end up harming themselves.

How can Bawumia fix the economy he helped destroy? – Former NPP General Secretary quizzes

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has dismissed claims that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, is not responsible for the current state of Ghana’s economy.

Ohene Ntow, a prominent member of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, explained that Dr. Bawumia was selected as the vice-presidential candidate in 2007 primarily because President Akufo-Addo highlighted his economic expertise and former President John Agyekum Kufuor advocated for his inclusion, believing he could help improve the economy.

In an interview on Peace FM on Monday, June 6, 2024, Ohene Ntow expressed his concerns, stating that the vice president, once promoted as an economic expert, now avoids discussing the country’s economic issues and focuses instead on digitalization.

“President Akufo-Addo told the NPP and later Ghanaians that ‘I’m pleading with you, let me bring Dr. Bawumia because he is the one who can fix the economy and make it boom’… We (the NPP) refused, saying he was not a member of our party. But President Kufuor said that if we don’t choose Bawumia (as the vice-presidential candidate), we would regret it if the economy fails under our watch, and we accepted him.

“Today, Dr. Bawumia runs away when we talk about the economy. He has taken a small section, digitalization. Digitalization is important, but it is not the whole economy. If you listen to Dr. Bawumia’s own pronouncements during the campaigns for 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections and you compare them to the results, and someone tells me that he (Bawumia) is a new factor, I find it very difficult to accept,” he said in Twi.

He added, “Ghanaians would also say that President Akufo-Addo told us that he is not an economist and was delegating the economy’s running to Bawumia, and we would see wonders. He gave it to him not for one year, not two years, but for the first term of four years, and the second term of four years – 8 years – we saw nothing, and you want another four years?”

NPP has constructed more roads than NDC – Justin Kodua

The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, asserted that President Akufo-Addo‘s administration has tripled the nation’s road infrastructure in his seven and a half years in office.

Underlining the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) inability to match their achievements, Mr Kodua highlighted the NPP’s completion of approximately 12,000 kilometers of roads, a stark contrast to the NDC’s 4,000 kilometers during former President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM’s political show “Dwabrem,” Mr Kodua emphasized the NPP’s dedication to national development through prudent resource management.

In a live interview on Monday, June 10, 2024, Kodua boasts of his government’s unparalleled accomplishments in infrastructure, particularly in the road sector, marking it as unprecedented in Ghana’s history.

Encouraging Ghanaians to recognize the NPP’s achievements, Kodua urges voters to consider retaining the party in power during the 2024 elections.

“NPP under President Akufo-Addo’s regime has constructed about 12,000 kilometres of roads compared to 4,000 kilometres completed by the main opposition NDC, and this shows NPP’s commitment to developing the country.”

“One political party constructed 4,000 kilometres; the NPP now has about 12,000 kilometres. This is three times what our opponent did, and we have achieved this due to the prudent management of the meagre resources we inherited,” he said.

  • NDC commemorates 32nd anniversary

    NDC commemorates 32nd anniversary

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) marked its 32nd anniversary with a flag-raising ceremony at its headquarters in Accra, celebrating its history and reaffirming its commitment to the upcoming December 2024 elections.

The NDC, founded by the Late Jerry John Rawlings, held the event to commemorate its establishment in preparation for the 1992 elections, which saw Rawlings elected as president.

The ceremony was attended by notable party members, including Running mate Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, National Youth Organizer George Opare Addo, National Vice Chairman Professor Joshua Alabi, and MP for Klottey Korle Dr. Zenator Rawlings.

Addressing attendees, National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the party’s focus on winning the upcoming elections rather than on festivities. He highlighted the challenges faced by the party, describing their opponent as formidable, especially when considering the collaborators working against them.

Reflecting on the NDC’s history, Mr. Nketiah acknowledged that while the party hasn’t achieved all its goals, it has not failed in its 32 years of existence. He cautioned against undoing the progress made, warning of efforts to destabilize the country’s foundation.

Mr. Nketiah also raised concerns about the militarization of the electoral process, citing instances where military personnel have intimidated citizens during voter transfers, calling for voices of conscience to speak out against such injustices.

General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey urged party members to prioritize genuine love for the party over loyalty to individuals, emphasizing that loyalty to the party should come first. He warned against aligning too closely with specific individuals, as this could lead to struggles when those individuals are no longer present.

The NDC’s anniversary celebration was a reminder of its commitment to its founding principles and its determination to secure victory in the upcoming elections.

  • NDC MPs accuse Justice Asare-Botwe of frustrating Ato Forson in ambulance trial

NDC MPs accuse Justice Asare-Botwe of frustrating Ato Forson in ambulance trial

The Minority in Parliament has declared their intention to boycott parliamentary proceedings whenever their leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is required to attend court sessions for the ongoing ambulance trial.

This decision was made in response to the High Court judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, denying a request from Dr. Ato Forson’s lawyers for a leave of absence to attend important parliamentary business on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, when the House resumes its third meeting of the fourth session.

In a press release issued by the NDC MPs and signed by Chief Whip Governs Agbodza, they expressed their dissatisfaction with the judge’s rejection of an earlier request by Parliament for Dr. Ato Forson to participate in a crucial Parliamentary Service Board meeting and other legislative activities.

The statement highlighted that the Minority Leader is expected to deliver a resumption address, engage with the press, and carry out other significant duties as part of his legislative mandate, which he will be unable to fulfill due to the court proceedings.

The Minority argues that their decision aims to counter what they perceive as an attempt by the trial judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, to hinder Dr. Ato Forson’s ability to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities as an elected Member of Parliament and the Leader of the Minority Caucus.

“The NDC Minority Caucus has taken notice of this worrying trend that shows an attempt by the trial judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, to prevent the Minority Leader from performing his constitutional duties as an elected Member of Parliament and the Leader of the Minority Caucus.”

“In the light of the above, and the continuous persecution of the Minority Leader, the NDC Minority will continue to solidarise and stand by its Leader anytime he is due to appear in court.”

“The NDC Minority Caucus further reserves the right to apply all other tools available to us in our approach to business on the floor,” an excerpt of the statement said.

  • Why didn’t you hold any event to celebrate our 32nd birthday – Anyidoho asks NDC leadership

Why didn’t you hold any event to celebrate our 32nd birthday – Anyidoho asks NDC leadership

Former Deputy General Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has accused the party of not holding any event to commemorate its 32nd anniversary.

According to him, the opposition party also failed to observe the 45th anniversary of the June 4th Revolution, a significant event in Ghana’s history.

According to him, the ethos of the June 4 coup forms the foundation of the NDC, and anyone who claims to be a member of the party must commit to observing June 4 and abiding by its principles.

As such he chided the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, holding him responsible for the party’s alleged failure.

“So, the NDC did not hold any Event yesterday to mark our 32nd birthday? They ignored June 4, days ago & they have ignored this one too. The “Regime Change” media houses shd get it into their heads that if JM continues to disrespect the soul of the NDC he will suffer for it,” he wrote in a post on X.

Meanwhile, flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has stated that the next NDC government will build a Ghana united in purpose, stable in governance, and developed in opportunity for all.

In his message for the NDC’s 32nd anniversary on June 10, the former President assured the rank and file of the party of his commitment to the NDC’s powerful campaign message of “Building the Ghana we want together.”

According to him, the message is not just a slogan but a call to action that echoes the party’s motto.

“Our party’s motto, ‘Unity, Stability, and Development’, is not just a slogan but a guiding principle for our daily work. It reminds us that only by coming together as one nation can we achieve the stability and development that we all aspire to.

“As we prepare for the December elections, I am reminded of our powerful campaign message: Building the Ghana we want together. This message is not just a slogan but a call to action that echoes our party’s motto. It underscores the crucial role of unity in propelling our country forward, the necessity of stability in our political and economic landscape, and our unwavering commitment to development for all our citizens.

“Our supporters are the backbone of the NDC, and I want to assure you that we remain steadfast in our commitment to these principles. Together, we will build a Ghana that is united in purpose, stable in governance, and developed in opportunity for all. Your unwavering support fuels our determination to work tirelessly towards these goals and create a brighter future for every Ghanaian.”

Include remote areas in voter registration mop-up exercise – Mahama to EC

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the upcoming mop-up voter registration exercise beyond district offices to include hard-to-reach areas.

The EC plans to conduct this mop-up exercise from August 1-3, 2024.

Mahama believes that expanding the registration locations will allow eligible Ghanaians, who have turned 18 or older, to register during the mop-up exercise, thus preventing voter suppression.

He expressed these views during an interaction with Ghanaians dubbed ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

“If this young lady or gentleman manages to secure two guarantors, pays for the transportation of the guarantors to accompany them to a registration centre and due to network failure and postponements, this young person is unable to register via the guarantor system, what is the likelihood that he or she can return another day to register with two guarantors?

“That leads to voter suppression. I will continue to urge the EC to prevent voter suppression by extending the mop-up exercise beyond its district offices to include all hard-to-reach areas.

“This will enable Ghanaians who have turned 18 or more to register from the 1st to the 3rd of August,” he said.

He also reassured his supporters that any obstacles to voting would not hinder his ultimate victory in the polls, which would be a victory for all Ghanaians.

“However, let me assure you that no matter the challenges or artificial mountains and obstacles they erect in your paths to prevent you from exercising your franchise, my victory in the polls shall be your victory. It shall be a victory for all the suffering Ghanaians,” he stated.

  • Mussa Dankwah will definitely lie about NDC MPs thrashing his anemic electoral survey – Anyidoho

Mussa Dankwah will definitely lie about NDC MPs thrashing his anemic electoral survey – Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, who earlier stated that Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, was once expelled from a meeting of NDC MPs in the Volta Region for disseminating inaccurate election surveys, has reiterated his stance.

Anyidoho remarked that Mr. Dankwah does not belong to the group of individuals who should influence Mahama regarding election results, although the current situation suggests otherwise.

Mr. Anyidoho recounted an incident where NDC MPs removed Mr. Dankwah from a meeting in the Volta Region due to a false survey.

“About 3 months ago NDC MPs attended a retreat in Ho. Mussa Dankwah was invited. We are hearing rumours that you are roaming with a certain survey. Can you show it to us? The long and short of it is that, when he was done, the MPs told him that, “Masa, we are the ones on the grounds. You are telling us that we will win 180 and more seats in parliament. When did you wakeup from sleep, that you say NDC will win 185 seats in parliament in this election?” That’s how we even heard that Musa Danquah was sacked from the meeting at Volta Serene Hotel”, Mr Anyidoho said.

In a recent development, Mr Dankwah dismissed these claims. He noted that despite being present at an NDC meeting, his survey on elections was not rubbished as being suggested.

Mr Anyidoho insists the Global InfoAnalytics director cannot be trusted on what should be expected at the end of an election.

  • Your intimidation against Naa Koryoo has won us Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat – Mahama to NPP

Your intimidation against Naa Koryoo has won us Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat – Mahama to NPP

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has asserted that the police have inadvertently bolstered the candidacy of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the Awutu Senya East parliamentary race.

Mahama suggested that if the intention behind her arrest and detention was to intimidate and dissuade her, it has had the opposite effect.

Mahama condemned what he perceives as inequality and selective justice under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. He highlighted the case of Hawa Koomson, the current Awutu Senya East MP, who faced no repercussions after firing a weapon at a voter registration center. In contrast, Naa Koryoo was detained merely for a clerical error on her firearm license.

“The inequality and selective justice of this government are gullying, otherwise, how could Hawa Koomson, who fired a weapon at a registration centre and boasted about it, walk away free and a parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East is detained partly because the very police that issued her with a firearm’s license misspelt her name?” the former president said in a live broadcast on Sunday, June 9.

He added, “If the government was seeking to break the spirit of Naa Koryoo with that politically organised arrest, they have rather handed over the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat to the young woman, who by all standards towers over and above the incumbent.”

I will establish a paid TV channel to support promote creative arts events – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to establish a dedicated paid television channel exclusively for creative arts events.

This commitment came during his engagement with talents from the Ghanaian creative industry in Accra, where discussions centered on the substantial potential of the creative arts sector in generating millions of employment opportunities for the youth.

“We can unlock countless opportunities for our talented young people.” That is why according to him, if elected President in the December 7 polls, he and his government will be committed to renewing support for the creative arts in the country again and fostering an environment where artists can thrive.

“As part of our plans for the creative arts industry, we intend to set up a paid television channel specifically for creative arts events. We want to provide a platform for our talented artists to showcase their work and reach a wider audience, “he promised.

Recognizing the pivotal role of a vibrant creative industry in unleashing opportunities for talented young individuals, the former President emphasized the importance of placing the sector on a solid foundation.

He affirmed that, if elected President in the December 7 polls, his administration would prioritize revitalizing support for the creative arts and nurturing an environment conducive for artists to flourish.

As part of his vision for the creative arts industry, Mahama outlined plans to establish a paid television channel dedicated to showcasing creative arts events. This initiative aims to provide a platform for talented artists to exhibit their work and connect with a broader audience.

Furthermore, Mahama disclosed a comprehensive agenda comprising over 20 policy proposals for arts and tourism. These include initiatives such as refurbishing Centers of Arts and Culture, promoting Ghanaian films at international film festivals, and offering tax incentives to creative artists registered with Tax Identification Numbers (TIN).

Expressing confidence in the transformative potential of the right policies, investments, and support, Mahama asserted that elevating the creative arts industry would empower youth to pursue their passions while contributing significantly to the nation’s economic development.

Whitney Boakye questions the absence of NDC at #dumsormuststop vigil

Entertainment pundit Whitney Boakye has voiced puzzlement over the opposition party’s nonattendance at the #dumsormuststop vigil.

On June 9, 2024, actress Yvonne Nelson led Ghanaians in a vigil to underscore the pressing demand for the government to tackle the nation’s power supply issues.

Despite the participation of a handful of celebrities and certain prominent figures from the opposition National Democratic Congress, the lack of NDC MPs at the event was noticeable.

This marked a distinct departure from the 2015 vigil, where the NPP Minority had significant representation.

Speaking on the development, Boakye remarked, “They frequently raise the issue of Dumsor in Parliament, so I’m surprised they didn’t seize this opportunity to amplify their message. The reality of power outages is undeniable.”

Reflecting on the impact of Dumsor on the entertainment industry, she added,

“Event organizers now find themselves compelled to factor generator costs into their budgets due to uncertainty over power supply. It’s become a matter of knowing the prices and making the necessary arrangements. Unfortunately, there seems to be a tendency to adapt rather than address the underlying challenges.”

Police to forward Naa Koryoo’s docket to AG for advice

The Ghana Police Service has announced that the case file regarding the arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, is being sent to the Office of the Attorney-General for review and guidance.

According to a statement from the Service, Naa Koryoo was cautioned for “the offence of transfer of firearms without authority” and granted bail along with three others.

Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, following an invitation, which infuriated NDC supporters who subsequently gathered at the station to demand her release.

The police statement noted that she was arrested for possessing a firearm and for the stabbing of the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, in the early hours of Sunday, June 2, 2024.

Usman Haruna was also arrested in connection with the stabbing and has been remanded into police custody, scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Following Naa Koryoo’s release on June 8, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, warned at a press conference that such arrests would not be tolerated in the future.

Cedi will stabilize, don’t rush in buying dollars – Afenyo-Markin to business community

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has advised the Ghanaian business community against hastily converting their cedis to US dollars.

Addressing the media in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin labeled negative remarks about Ghana’s economy as “unreasonable.”

“If a politician who does not understand business comes out just for politics, the market will respond. It is a result of, I wouldn’t say reckless, but unreasonable comments that seem to be affecting the business environment,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He recounted how the dollar rose to GH¢15.5 in 2022, but through the efforts of the then Minister of Finance, it fell to as low as GH¢8.00.

He urged the Ghanaian business community to ignore the pessimism being spread and expressed confidence that the Cedi’s situation will improve.

“I would have to urge businessmen not to change their cedis into dollars because the rate will be coming down. When it happened in 2022, a lot of people lost money because they were responding to the pessimism of the NDC at that time, believing that the Ghanaian economy was collapsing and there was no future for the economy, and rushed to change their dollars at the rate of 14 and 15 Ghana cedis.

“When the dollar rate dropped to 8 Ghana cedis, here we were; they had lost huge sums of money. So, I would encourage Ghanaian businessmen individually not to rush to respond to the pessimism. They should be optimistic,” the MP advised.

He further added that investing in Treasury bills is a better option than buying US dollars, as the government is working diligently to lower the cedi-to-dollar rate.

Hawa Koomson, Police are scared because Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory – Pablo

The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, George Opare Addo, has voiced his strong belief in the electoral success of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the forthcoming parliamentary race for the Awutu Senya East constituency in the Central Region.

Mr Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo claims that Hawa Koomson is apprehensive about losing the election, which has led to various manipulative tactics, including the unjust arrest of the NDC candidate.

In a post on X on Saturday, June 8, he said, “Every tactic used against Naa Koryoo only confirms her growing strength. She’s the leader Kasoa needs, and we’ll ensure she triumphs. Hawa Koomson and the police are scared because they know Naa Koryoo is on the path to victory. Let’s rally behind Naa and push forward to December.”

    Hawa Koomson, Fisheries Minister

George Opare Addo’s remarks came after the release of Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress’ Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, from police custody on Saturday.

Madam Okunor was initially detained on Sunday, June 2, 2024, and questioned, followed by another arrest and detention on Friday, June 7. Her arrest sparked outrage from the NDC, with flagbearer John Dramani Mahama condemning the action and calling for her immediate release to maintain national stability.

In response, Sammy Gyamfi, the party’s National Communications Officer, called on party members to assemble at the Cantonments Police Station in protest. Demonstrators, clad in the party’s colors and chanting slogans in support of Okunor, voiced their displeasure at what they perceived to be an unjust and politically motivated detention.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor

Madam Okunor was released on Saturday, but the police have yet to provide an explanation for her arrest. Mr. Addo remains adamant that no political maneuvers will sway the strong support for Naa Koryoo.

“Hawa Koomson’s political games cannot change the will of the people. We are all in for Naa Koryoo. Hawa Koomson thinks she can distract from her failures by targeting Naa Koryoo. The people know better and stand stronger with Naa.”

“Hawa Koomson has nothing to offer but failed tactics. Naa Koryoo carries the hope and support of the people, stronger than ever,” he said.

Mr. Addo also urged the national security and the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to maintain impartiality and resist political pressures. He called on them to uphold justice fairly and without bias.

“If you cannot uphold justice and resist political pressure from Nana Addo and Bawumia, you are unfit for your role IGP. We demand action, not compliance,” he said.

Today marks the dawn of our victory – Naa Koryoo says after her release from detention

Following her release from detention, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, conveyed her arrest as a symbol of triumph.

Addressing a spirited crowd at the NDC headquarters in Accra on June 8, she proclaimed, “This is the beginning of our victory. We will deliver the seat,” she said to an enthusiastic crowd of party faithful at the NDC’s headquarters in Accra.

Expressing profound gratitude to the party members for their unwavering support during her incarceration, Naa Koryoo remarked “I am grateful to you all”.

The recent events harken back to the arrest of Phyllis Naa Koryo Okunor, along with Mustapha Mohammed and Abdul Aziz Musah, the previous week.

The trio was apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV saloon car with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission (EC) Office at Ofaakor. They were discovered in possession of a firearm associated with a stabbing incident involving Ato Koomson, the son of the current MP and Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

The incident reportedly occurred near the EC Office at Ofaakor in the Central Region. The police retrieved a pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition from the vehicle, as outlined in their statement.

Naa Koryoo, however, clarified that the firearm in question is lawfully registered and justified her possession, “I have every right to protect myself because the happenings at Kasoa necessitate that I do so”.

He noted that despite the forces that may be supporting the MP, “the day of accountability is near.”

The police have not issued any public statements regarding the arrest.

The initial disclosure of Okunor’s detention came from the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi. Gyamfi highlighted that the police provided no explanation for her arrest and detention, characterizing it as an attempt to silence the NDC.

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of three individuals, including Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, for possessing a firearm without lawful authority. They were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV near the Electoral Commission Office at Ofaakor. A pump-action gun with four rounds of ammunition was seized during the arrest.

She maintained that the firearm found in her car was legally licensed and was obtained for self-protection against the incumbent NPP MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. Okunor alleged that the police had failed to protect her during previous altercations with the MP, where she was attacked and gunshots were fired.

Before Okunor’s arrest related to firearm possession, a clash between NDC and NPP supporters occurred at the EC’s office in Ofaakor during the ongoing votes transfer exercise. This altercation resulted in the stabbing of Ato Koomson, the son of the incumbent MP and Minister for Fisheries, Hawa Koomson. The suspect involved in the stabbing has also been arrested and detained.

It remains uncertain whether Okunor’s subsequent arrest is linked to the stabbing incident or solely related to the firearm possession charge.

You arrest Naa Koryoo for wielding a registered gun but leave Hawa Koomson who fired a gun – Sammy Gyamfi slams Police

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the Ghana Police Service for allegedly detaining the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

“Unlike, Hawa Koomson who in 2020 actually fired a gun at a registration center, Naa Koryoo has not fired any gun or weapon. Yet, the …Police service is hellbent on detaining her.”

NDC executives in Amenfi Central suspended for misconduct

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended several executives in the Amenfi Central Constituency over alleged anti-party activities.

The suspended officials include the constituency chairman, the organiser, and both the main and deputy women’s organisers.

These executives took legal action against the party and its parliamentary candidate for the area, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, accusing her of forging party cards.

Consequently, Joana Gyan Cudjoe has been injuncted for forgery and for presenting herself as the parliamentary candidate-elect for the NDC in the constituency.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, announced that the suspension will last for six months and has been referred to the party’s national disciplinary committee for further review.

“If anybody has a problem with the process that elected her as a parliamentary candidate in that constituency, why did the person wait and we have gone through all the processes, finished the elections swore her in as the parliamentary candidate, trained her and prepared her for the final election then you are in court to say that you have a problem with the processes that elected her as a parliamentary candidate.

This is clearly anti-party conduct; a calculated attempt to hold the party’s interest to ransom. But the party will respect the ruling of the court. We are looking further and any other person whose conduct will also constitute misconduct under the constitution will follow suit until we clean that constituency and prepare it for the 2024 elections,” he stated.

Revealed: Why TV3 management took Bridget Otoo off air

Ghanaian broadcaster, Bridget Otoo has opened up about the circumstances that led Media General, TV3 to take her off air in 2016.

Speaking on The KSM Show, she revealed that her outspoken views and criticisms, particularly regarding the IEA debate, were the main reasons for her removal.

According to her, organizers of the IEA debate at that time wrote a complaint to the board of directors at TV3 regarding her criticisms. They suggested she had undue influence over her colleagues.

“Unfortunately, while I was working, even at TV3, for instance, I think my opinion on the IEA debate, and I said it was not useful, I didn’t think that it made any impact on our elections. I remember there was then the person was not a professor, it was a doctor then, the current Jean Mensa who was with IEA, you know, her people wrote this stinker to the board of TV3 at the time that I seemed to have a certain influence over the presenters that I work with. You know, I said no,” she stated.

She added that the backlash from her IEA debate comments prompted the then CEO of TV3 to intervene and asked her to be nice to the “nice to these NPP people”.

“The CEO at the time called me and said, ‘Look, be nice to these NPP people.’ I got the impression that they were all pro-NPP, and it’s fine; we all have our biases. But I said, ‘Look, I’m going to say what I feel I want to say. Nobody pays me.’

Brigdet Otoo stated that she defended her stance, saying, “If I’m presented with someone and they cannot hold their argument or hold them to account, it’s not because I am putting a gun to anybody’s head. If you think my arguments are so solid that they convince you, then I am just doing a good job at articulating why I think it is not prudent.”

She stated that the conversation with her boss didn’t go well and that was when “they took me off air”.

Reflecting on the experience, Bridget Otoo noted a recurring pattern at the station, stating that, “I think they’ve tried that now even with Johnny Hughes and a few others. When they think you are going a certain way and they don’t like it, they take you off air. They literally halt your career.”

According to her, leaving TV3 made her appreciate social media more because it gave her control over her own narrative.

She added that people follow her for her views and thoughts, not just because she was on television. That’s why, even today, she values her presence on social media more than being on TV.

“Those experiences made me love social media more because then I had control over my own narrative. People follow me because of my views and thoughts, not because I sat on television. That’s why even to this day I value my presence on social media more than being on television.”

“After we had launched our election campaign, they had done billboards and everything. TV3 went to the extent of removing my face from all the billboards just to prove a point that they didn’t align with my views,” she narrated.

The High Court in Sekondi, situated in the Western region, has granted an injunction against Joana Cudjoe Gyan, preventing her from representing herself as the elected parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Amenfi Central constituency.

This injunction comes in response to allegations of forging her voter’s ID and NDC party card.

Presided over by Justice G. K. Gyan-Kontoh, the court order also prohibits the NDC, the second defendant, from acknowledging or engaging with Joana Cudjoe Gyan as the legitimate NDC parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency.

Additionally, the injunction stipulates that the applicants must submit an undertaking to compensate the respondent for damages if it is later determined that the applicants are not entitled to the injunction.

The five applicants—Gyedu Frimpong, Akubilla Daniel, Wnock Ntiamoh, Isaac Twum, and Doris Aidoo—have filed a lawsuit against Joana Cudjoe, the NDC, and the Electoral Commission as respondents.

The court’s order states: “It is hereby ordered that, until the final determination of the matter, the affected parties are restrained as follows:

The second and third defendants/respondents, their agents, and officers are prohibited from recognizing, dealing with, or granting any rights or privileges to the first defendant/respondent as the duly elected NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency,” the court declared.

“It is further ordered that the applicants shall file an undertaking to pay damages by way of compensation to the respondent if it turns out that the applicants are, in fact, not entitled to the injunction as required,” the court mandated.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has alleged that her opponent, Hawa Koomson, pulled a gun at her on four separate occasions.

During an interview on Point Blank on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Okunor stated that these incidents occurred during the 2019 and 2020 elections.

Despite lodging several complaints with the police, she claimed that no concrete action has been taken against the current MP for the constituency Hawa Koomson.

She added that in order to protect herself from potential danger, she purchased a gun for self-defense against Hawa Koomson.

“There is the need for me to do that because I can best protect myself and not any other person against Hawa Koomson.”

“When we go back into the 2019-2020 elections, Hawa Koomson pulled a gun on me on four different occasions. No arrest was done, no interrogations, no investigations, nothing. The case just died. And since the police haven’t provided any form of protection for me,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, along with two others, Mustapha Mohammed and Abdul Aziz Musah, were  apprehended by the Police at Ofaakor near Kasoa in the Central Region.

The arrests were made on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm following a violent altercation at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa.

Minority’s fake claims slowing down Ghana’s economic growth – Majority

The Majority in Parliament has accused the Minority caucus of undermining the economy by driving away investors through continuous misinformation.

The Minority has raised concerns about the government’s alleged violations of the Public Financial Management Act, claiming the government did not obtain Parliamentary approval for the contract to dualize the Kasoa-Winneba section of the Accra-Cape Coast highway.

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, questioned the government’s funding source for the project.

However, the Majority dismissed these accusations as misleading. Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, stating, “The contract in question must be an international transaction. That is where our colleagues should pay attention. It does not mean that every contract with a multi-year value should come to parliament. So they should stop misleading the public. They should stop peddling falsehoods. Every government engages the private sector. The object of that is to create space for economic growth.”

“So if you recklessly scare off the businessmen and where you know that what you are putting out is not true what you are trying to do is to sabotage the economy.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also urged the business community to avoid hoarding dollars, assuring that the government is working to stabilize the cedi.

“So I would want to encourage them that we know it’s an election year but let’s argue on facts. Let’s put out the facts,” he stated.

Ambulance trial: No one is above the law, even Trump has been found guilty – Kabila fumes

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, along with Dr. Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa, are currently facing charges at the Accra High Court. They are accused of causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the State in relation to the procurement of 200 ambulances.

This transaction, initiated in 2009 under the late former President John Evans Atta Mills, resulted in the purchase of only 30 ambulances for €2.37 million.

The deal was managed by then-Deputy Finance Minister Ato Forson and Jakpa, who represented the Dubai-based Big Sea General Trading Limited.

During the court proceedings before Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Jakpa claimed that the Attorney-General had approached him at the private residence of Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi. Jakpa accused the Attorney-General of asking him to fabricate evidence against Ato Forson.

In response, the NDC held a press conference where they played a leaked audio recording, purportedly of a conversation between Jakpa and the Attorney-General.

The NDC argued that the audio discredited Mr. Godfred Dame, the Attorney-General, and called for his resignation based on these revelations.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Peace FM, Kabila stated that just as former US President Donald Trump faced legal consequences, so should any individual, regardless of their position or status.

“The principle of equality before the law is paramount in ensuring justice and accountability. Just as former US President Donald Trump faced legal consequences, so too should any individual, regardless of their position or status. In parliament, while the Majority Leader holds a prominent role, it does not exempt any member, including the Minority Leader, from legal scrutiny if warranted.

Regarding the accusations against the Attorney General, Godfred Dame, it is essential to uphold the rule of law by allowing due process to take its course. This entails presenting the allegations in court, affording the accused the opportunity to defend themselves, and ensuring a fair trial where all sides of the story can be heard and evaluated,” he added.

  • Asiedu Nketiah and I are not fighting each other – Ofosu-Ampofo

The former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has emphasized his strong bond with the current National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

Despite losing his position to Asiedu Nketiah in the party’s internal elections in 2022, Ofosu-Ampofo highlighted their amicable relationship in a recent interview.

Speaking on ChannelOne TV (formerly Citi TV), Ofosu-Ampofo said “I don’t have any problem. I arrived from the US, and I have called all the leading members of the party. I have called the National Chairman, I called the General Secretary [Fifi Fiavi], and we spoke. When I was in the US, he [Asiedu Nketiah] came with the Speaker for a conference, and they called to check up on me. And so, we don’t have any problem at all. I don’t have any problem at all.”

Ofosu-Ampofo affirmed his dedication to backing the new NDC leadership, aiming to secure their triumph in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

“The NDC is focused on winning the 2024 elections. I told the journalists when I arrived at the airport that my coming was to support the efforts of the party. The new executives are doing very well, they are pushing the frontiers of the party,” he said.

He added, “The flagbearer [Mahama] is all over the place, he’s working. The atmosphere is ripe for an NDC victory. And I believe that all that I can do now is to come and support the good work that is already ongoing.”

Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo refuted allegations of conspiring against the party with the National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, dismissing any notion of such intentions.

“I didn’t hear, but if you heard, it’s not true. I have observed him from afar and I think that he’s doing a very great job. The fact that they say he’s my boy, I have mentored a lot of people in the party. There are people at the national executives who passed through my hands. I don’t want to mention names.

“Across the country, I think that I have mentored a lot of people. It is most disingenuous by anybody, by any stretch of the imagination, to suggest the least that the current Youth Organiser will be doing anything to undermine the party,” he pointed out.

Ofosu-Ampofo also underscored his enduring bond with former President John Mahama.

“Oh yes, [former] President Mahama and I have come a long way.

“We entered parliament the same day and were sworn in the same day as MPs… As a former chairman of the party, he would attest that if there was anybody who showed loyalty, commitment, and dedication to his course, maybe it would be second to none.

“If you ask him, he will tell you that I was there 24/7 for him and have worked with him till now. I owe him a lot of gratitude. I communicate with him regularly,” he clarified.

Atubiga claims that the monetization of Ghana’s elections has created a serious problem, making it nearly impossible to combat corruption. He pointed out the problematic practice of political party delegates demanding money from individuals seeking to run for office.

He argued that because this issue has received so little attention, it has become commonplace for prospective lawmakers, presidential candidates, and party officials to provide large sums of money to delegates in order to secure votes. This practice has extended to national elections, creating an environment ripe for corruption.

Atubiga explained that when voters demand significant financial contributions from candidates, those politicians often enter office with the intent to recoup their expenses, thereby prioritizing personal gain over national development.

He highlighted that the commercialization of both national and internal elections has led to more serious issues on all fronts, asserting that Ghanaians themselves have sown the seeds of corruption by demanding money and other valuables before casting their votes.

“these politicians do not have the means to fund their political offices, and so when the Ghanaian voters demand money from them before voting for them, they steal from the state coffers when they get into office to recoup what they spent on their campaigns.

“You have planted the seed of corruption in them, and so when they get power or are elected into office, they will steal from your state.”

Mahama won 2020 elections – Ofosu Ampofo insists

The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has maintained that John Dramani Mahama emerged as the rightful victor in the 2020 general elections.

Despite the official outcome and the Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mr. Ampofo remains steadfast in his belief that Mahama won the election.

During an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on ChannelOne TV, Mr. Ofosu Ampofo reiterated his unwavering confidence in Mahama’s victory.

“I am still convinced that President Mahama did not lose the 2020 elections. Had everything proceeded as it should have, we would be the governing party,” he affirmed.

Although the Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging the election results on March 4, 2021, citing a lack of merit, Ofosu Ampofo contends that the NPP’s victory was marred by irregularities.

Mr. Ampofo highlighted irregularities during the electoral process, particularly incidents in Ablekuma Central, where he alleges that NDC supporters encountered intimidation and violence from state security forces.

He attributed the significant vote tally for the NDC to the vigilance of their supporters, who remained steadfast despite adversities.

“In Ablekuma Central, for example, amidst the turmoil during the vote declaration, our people in Accra held their ground. Despite some sustaining bullet wounds and one fatality, they remained resolute in doing the right thing. Our victory in Ablekuma Central is a testament to their vigilance. Without it, we wouldn’t have achieved such numbers,” he recounted.

“These are the kinds of situations that are out of your hands. When state security, which is meant to be neutral, starts taking sides and brutalizing citizens, it poses a serious challenge to the integrity of the electoral process,” he concluded.

Coconut craze: Bawumia’s refreshing campaign strategy echoes Akufo-Addo’s Kalyppo fame

Former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has weighed in on a viral photo of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The photo shows Bawumia enjoying coconut water during a campaign stop.

Anyidoho, who has praised Bawumia’s campaign style, shared the picture on his X page. He compared the Vice President’s coconut moment to then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s viral Kalyppo picture from the 2016 presidential campaign.

“It was once Kalyppo; now it is coconut water. A man must quench his campaign thirst one way or the other. It’s not easy,” Anyidoho remarked.

In 2016, Akufo-Addo’s popularity surged after a picture of him sipping a box of Kalyppo fruit juice went viral. The picture sparked a trend where NPP members and supporters created their own versions of the image with Kalyppo.

  • EC rescinds its decision to ban political party agents from observing voter transfer exercise

EC rescinds its decision to ban political party agents from observing voter transfer exercise

Electoral Commission (EC) has rescinded its previous order barring agents of political parties from witnessing the voter transfer exercise.

Party agent access to transfer centres was banned in the first memo, which was sent to district officials on June 2. The document cited violent instances as justification for the prohibition.

Political parties and civil society organisations swiftly condemned the action, calling it a betrayal of democratic ideals and a possible reason for disparities in vote distribution.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, expressed his worries on Facebook, claiming that the EC’s directive was evidence of cooperation with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the upcoming general elections on December 7.

But in an unexpected change of events, the EC overturned the contentious judgement in a press statement on June 4.

The Electoral Commission’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, said the decision to reverse was made after careful deliberation and evaluation of the many issues brought out.

“Following internal discussions and in consideration of the concerns of some stakeholders, the Commission has decided to revert to its decision made at IPAC.

“The Commission has directed its Officers at the Districts to allow Agents of Political Parties to observe the Transfer of Votes Exercise with effect from tomorrow Wednesday, 5th June, 2024,” portions of the release said.

We have the list of voters NPP wants to move to specific constituencies – NDC

The Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to illegally transfer voters to specific constituencies during the ongoing voter transfer exercise.

In a press conference held in Accra on Monday, June 3, 2024, Dr. Omane Boamah claimed to have intercepted a list detailing the number of voters the NPP intends to transfer to targeted constituencies.

He stated that the same source who provided this list also informed him about the theft of some Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) equipment.

Additionally, shortly before he received the list, the EC instructed its district office officials to prevent party agents from observing the voter transfer process.

“We will not withdraw our agents from the transfer centres. Look, we have authority, specific constituencies and a specific number of votes that the NPP wants to transfer to those constituencies. We got that document less than 15 minutes after the EC statement about political parties withdrawing their agents also started circulating.

“You may want to ask, where did I get my information about the stolen biometric equipment at the headquarters of the EC from? I will not disclose the source, but I’m the very person who got the information about the stolen biometric equipment at the headquarters of the EC under CCTV surveillance which they have admitted to,” he said.

The NDC elections director added, “I trust the source because the source proved to be credible when the source provided the information about the stolen biometric equipment.”

He further emphasized that all election stakeholders must be dedicated to ensuring transparency in all processes leading up to the December 7, 2024, polls for a free and fair election.

“The point we are making is that gerrymandering is something that unscrupulous political parties pursue during the transfer of votes. We do not want any political party to engage in gerrymandering,” he noted.

He questioned the EC’s decision to have political party agents withdraw from voter transfer centers.

    Background:

The EC instructed its regional directors to prevent political parties from observing the ongoing voter transfer exercise.

This directive followed reports of violence at several centers conducting voter transfers, including the Kasoa EC office.

At that location, for example, the son of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was reportedly stabbed during a confrontation with members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday, June 2, 2024, regarding the transfer of voters to the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

In a letter to its regional directors, shared by Oyerepa TV, the EC instructed its district officers not to permit political party agents to observe the voter transfer exercise.

“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to the violent clashes occurring at some of the District Offices as a result of the transfer of votes exercise.

“Regional Directors are to inform District Officers not to allow agents of political parties to observe the transfer of votes exercise with effect from tomorrow, Monday, June 3, 2024,” parts of the letter, dated Sunday, June 2, 2024, read.

The Commission mentioned that monitoring the transfer exercise was unnecessary because political parties would receive the list of transferred voters upon request.

“Pursuant to Regulation 22 (8) of C.I. 127, Returning Officers are required to give copies of the transferred voters’ list to political parties and candidates upon request. District Officers should ensure that they strictly adhere to this requirement,” the statement added.

NPP knows and admits it will lose 2024 presidential elections – Mahama

The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing for defeat in the upcoming December elections.

According to Mahama, the NPP has internally acknowledged this inevitable outcome and is now turning to gerrymandering to try to salvage its position.

In a press statement released on Monday, June 3, 2024, Mahama criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for its recent directive that bars political parties from monitoring the ongoing transfer of votes.

He emphasized that this decision violates a prior agreement made with political parties during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting the previous week.

“The NPP knows and internally admits that it will lose the 2024 presidential elections. We also know that, as a last resort, it seeks to deploy gerrymandering during this voter transfer period to improve its chances in the parliamentary elections in the erroneous belief that it may rely on that to affect its presidential votes,” the NDC flagbearer said.

The NDC flagbearer accused the EC of aiding the NPP in its alleged attempts to manipulate the electoral process.

He insisted that the Commission’s actions indicate an intent to help the NPP secure victory in the 2024 general elections.

Despite these tactics, Mahama expressed confidence that the NPP would not succeed in retaining power.

  • ARTICLE: Unpacking Ato Forson’s alleged criminal act in the ambulance case and the desperate attempts by NDC to shield him

ARTICLE: Unpacking Ato Forson’s alleged criminal act in the ambulance case and the desperate attempts by NDC to shield him

Contrary to what the NDC has strenuously tried to make Ghanaians believe in respect of the ongoing criminal trial of Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa, the emerging facts of the case show clearly that the two accused persons shortchanged Ghana in the botched ambulance transaction, occasioning a huge financial loss to the state.

First of all, documentary evidence tendered in court shows that Big Sea, the Dubai-based company that was engaged by the NDC government to supply the 200 ambulances and which had Jakpa as its local agent, was unknown to parliamentary approval processes.

In other words, the specific transaction entered with Big Sea, which was engineered by the accused persons, had no parliamentary approval as required by Article 181(5) of the constitution, therefore making the transaction unlawful and of no effect.

Beyond that, the Attorney General had presented to the court a letter written by the then minister of health under the NDC administration, Sherry Aryittey, instructing Big Sea not to supply the ambulances because there was no valid contract regarding the transaction, and also informing them that the Ministry of Health did not have funds to establish the letters of credit (LCs) for purposes of paying for the transaction.

Despite this, Ato Forson, as deputy minister of finance, authorised payment for the ambulances without any basis and directed the amount to be charged to the Ministry of Health’s account.

The vehicles that were supplied by Big Sea pursuant to Ato Forson’s directives were fundamentally defective and not fit to be used as ambulances. The vans were so ordinary and defective that they could not even be used as trotros.

The defective nature of the vans was confirmed by a letter written by the then minister of health, Alex Segbefia, and other assessments by the National Ambulance Service (NAS). It was on this basis that the vans were never used even by the John Mahama administration, because they were just not fit for use as ambulances.

That is the cardinal sin committed by Ato Forson and his conspirators, including Richard Jakpa, against the Republic.

It is this daylight stealing of the taxpayers’ money that the current learned Attorney General, Godfred Dame, is bent on fighting through this prosecution. Fortunately, the AG, as ruled by the court, has been able to establish a solid case against all the accused persons.

The accused persons have tried on many occasions to plead with the AG to discontinue the prosecution. The AG had to contend with pressure from every angle, including the former president John Mahama, who specifically maintained the discontinuation of the ambulance trial as a condition to get the co-operation of NDC MPs.

Having been unsuccessful in getting the AG to drop the charges against them, the accused persons then resorted to using these malicious orchestrations targeted at destroying the enviable reputation of the AG. Richard Jakpa is thus being used as a hired mercenary to exploit the relationship between the AG and his own cousin Justice Yonny Kulendi to get the accused persons to escape accountability.

However, the AG remains focused on the delivery of his work for the good people of Ghana, and he shall succeed, Insha Allah.

Any efforts to rig 2024 election will be thwarted by NDC – Mahama

At the funeral of the late former Minister of Information, John Tia Akologo, in Duusi, Talensi District of the Upper East Region, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has restated his commitment to ensuring peaceful elections in December.

Mahama highlighted the NDC’s track record of winning elections conducted under peaceful conditions and cautioned against any attempts to manipulate or rig the upcoming elections.

He urged the clergy to advocate not only for peace but also for justice, which he deemed crucial for maintaining a peaceful electoral process, stressing the importance of fairness and transparency.

Mahama asserted that any violence during the electoral process would not come from the NDC and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to peaceful and democratic means of contesting elections, urging supporters to uphold democratic principles.

As the December elections approach, Mahama pledged to prioritize peace and justice, reflecting the NDC’s dedication to fostering a democratic and stable political environment in Ghana.

“We expect that the elections will be peaceful because we know we’re going to win. If there’s going to be violence, it will not come from us, the NDC.”

“But I will crave our Reverend Fathers when you preach about peace, also preach about justice because when there’s no justice, there is no peace.”

“We are for peace, but we will resist any attempts to rig this election. I assure Reverend Father that we will play our part to have a free, fair and transparent election. And we believe that God will rescue our country from the crisis we find ourselves in,” he stated.

Watch vote transfer closely; ignore EC’s gerrymandering order – NDC to its agents

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive, urging its agents to ignore the EC’s instruction not to permit political party representatives to monitor the ongoing voter transfer exercise.

The NDC argued that this directive could potentially lead to gerrymandering through illegal voter transfers, thereby compromising the integrity of the electoral process.

The EC recently issued a directive to its Regional Directors, instructing them to inform District Directors that political party agents will not be allowed to observe the ongoing vote transfer.

This directive is set to take effect on Monday, June 3.

In a memo, the EC explained that this decision was made in response to several clashes that have occurred at its district offices, with the aim of maintaining order and security during the process.

However, the NDC strongly contests this directive, urging its agents nationwide to reject and disregard the EC’s directive.

“Political party agents play an important role in promoting transparency, and deepening confidence in our electoral system, so the actions of the EC must enhance the important role of political party agents, and not seek to diminish it.”

“In our view, an insistence on this directive by the Electoral Commission can only be in furtherance of the suspected devious and sinister agenda of the Commission to manipulate the processes leading to the 2024 elections.”

“The National Democratic Congress therefore hereby calls on all its agents across the country to defy and disregard this outrageous directive by the Electoral Commission.”

“All structures of the party, particularly Regional and Constituency Secretariats, are hereby directed to deploy NDC agents to all district offices of the EC to closely monitor the ongoing voter transfer exercise,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Vote transfer: Ignore the EC’s absurd directive – NDC tells party agents

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has instructed all its representatives nationwide to defy and ignore the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive to its district officers to prevent the presence of party agents during the ongoing vote transfer process.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, strongly criticized the EC’s instruction, labeling it as “appalling and unacceptable,” suggesting it is designed to facilitate unfair manipulation of voter transfers.

In a statement released on June 3, the NDC’s General Secretary accused the EC of collaborating with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to undermine the transparency of the process, urging party agents to disregard the directive.

The EC, in a memo issued to its district officers on Sunday, June 2, cited instances of violent clashes at some transfer centers as the reason for prohibiting political party agents from attending.

“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to the violent clashes occurring at some of the District Offices as a result of the Transfer of Votes Exercise.

“Regional Directors are to inform District Officers not to allow Agents of Political Parties to observe the Transfer of Votes Exercise with effect from tomorrow, Monday, June 3, 2024.”

Fifi Kwetey said the insistence on the directive is “in furtherance of the suspected devious and sinister agenda of the Commission to manipulate the processes leading to the 2024 elections” and therefore called for its outright defiance.

“The National Democratic Congress therefore hereby calls on all its agents across the country to defy and disregard this outrageous directive by the Electoral Commission.

NDC member reportedly stabs Hawa Koomson’s son, party calls for impartial investigation

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region is demanding a thorough, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the violent incident that occurred at the Electoral Commission’s office in Kasoa on Sunday morning.

This call follows the arrest of the NDC’s constituency organiser, Daniel Techie Mensah, and its Parliamentary Candidate after a confrontation led to the stabbing of Ato Koomson, son of the NPP MP for Awutu Senya East and Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Ato Koomson is currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital for a stab wound to his chest.

In a statement issued by the Constituency Communication Officer, Stephen Delali Sowoekpor, the NDC expressed concern over what they describe as selective arrests, raising questions about the police’s impartiality in handling the incident. The NDC highlighted a “historical context of attacks on NDC supporters allegedly orchestrated by Hawa Koomson.”

    Full Statement from the NDC:

The NDC Communication Bureau of the Awutu Senya East Constituency expresses its profound concern and condemnation over the violent incident that occurred in the early hours of this morning.

This unfortunate event stands as yet another instance of aggression and lawlessness perpetuated by elements associated with the NPP, under the apparent sponsorship and direction of Hawa Koomson.

On the previous day, an agreement was reached between the police and the two main political parties in the Awutu Senya East Constituency to prevent the busing in of people to queue for vote transfers.

Despite this agreement, at approximately 2:00 AM today, the NPP blatantly violated this accord by busing in about 50 thugs to the centre. This unlawful act led to an immediate confrontation with both the police and members of the NDC present at the scene.

The situation escalated further when Ato Koomson, son of Hawa Koomson, arrived with additional individuals who violently attacked the NDC members.

The NDC members, outnumbered and outmatched, faced severe beatings. As a result, two of our members fainted, and one, identified as Asmah, suffered significant injuries, bleeding profusely. This tragic turn of events underscores the need for immediate intervention and justice.

We are closely monitoring the police’s actions regarding this incident, especially considering the historical context of attacks on NDC supporters allegedly orchestrated by Hawa Koomson.

We have noted with concern the police’s decision to take Daniel Techie Mensah, the NDC Constituency Organiser, to the Police Headquarters in Accra. This action appears selective and raises questions about the impartiality of the police’s response.

In light of these events, we call for the following:

    1. An Immediate and Impartial Investigation: The police must conduct a thorough, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the incident, ensuring that all perpetrators are held accountable, regardless of political affiliation.
    2. Protection of All Citizens: The police must ensure the safety and protection of all citizens, particularly members of the NDC, who have been repeatedly targeted and victimized.
    3. Adherence to Agreements: We urge all parties, including law enforcement, to respect and adhere to agreements made to maintain peace and order during electoral processes.

We stand firm in our commitment to justice and the protection of our members. The NDC will continue to advocate for the rights and safety of all individuals in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

    Signed,

    Comrade Stephen Delali Sowoekpor
    Constituency Communication Officer
NDC Communication Bureau, Awutu Senya East Constituency

    Police Actions and Political Tensions

The police have arrested the main suspect and are conducting investigations into the matter. This incident has intensified political tensions in the area, with both parties calling for peace and order during the voter registration process. The authorities are being urged to ensure that justice is served impartially and that such incidents do not recur.

  • Ofosu-Ampofo to begin defence in leaked tape case on June 20

Former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, is set to begin his defence on June 20, 2024, in the case where he stands accused, along with another individual, of allegedly inciting violence in a leaked audio recording.

The decision came after the court, presided over by Justice Samuel Asiedu, a Supreme Court Justice acting as an additional High Court judge, granted Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo an extension.

Originally scheduled to begin his defence on May 30, Ofosu-Ampofo was granted more time.

During the court session, Ofosu-Ampofo’s counsel, Tony Lithur, informed the court that his client had suffered a leg injury due to a long flight, which affected his ability to meet and prepare for the hearing on May 30.

“I have spoken to him and his doctors say because it is just a swell, within a week or two he could walk with a stick to court. I crave my Lord’s indulgence to give us two weeks to open our defence,” Counsel submitted.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atokora Obuobisa, agreed to the request for more time since she had seen the doctor’s report indicating that Mr Ofosu-Ampofo would not be able to walk.

The case has been adjourned to June 20 this year.

    Not guilty

Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, along with the former Deputy National Communication Officer of the NDC, is facing trial over a leaked audio recording in which Ofosu-Ampofo allegedly incited violence against the leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Peace Council (NPC).

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit assault against a public officer. Additionally, Ofosu-Ampofo has pleaded not guilty to two separate counts of assault against a public officer.

    Prosecution’s facts

According to the prosecution’s account, following the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election incident on January 31, 2019, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo met with several NDC communicators on February 3, 2019.

The prosecution detailed that during this meeting, Ofosu Ampofo and Kwaku Boahen outlined a plan involving criminal activities, including acts of violence against the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, and the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante.

An audio recording of this meeting was leaked, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service into the comments made on the tape.

Furthermore, the prosecution noted that on February 27, 2019, Boahen confirmed in a radio interview his participation in the meeting and stated that the leaked audio accurately represented the discussions from February 3, 2019.

Tax exemptions during Mahama’s tenure unconstitutional, illegal, and immoral – Majority Leader

The parliament’s majority has raised doubts about the reasons behind the opposition from the minority regarding tax waiver requests for 42 companies under the 1D1F policy.

These waivers, totaling $350 million, have been pending in parliament for years due to strong opposition from the NDC minority.

The NDC MPs, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, argue that granting such exemptions is not feasible given the country’s economic crisis, which has led the government to seek IMF assistance.

However, during a media address in parliament, majority leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin pointed out exemptions granted during the Mahama administration, when Dr. Forson served as deputy finance minister.

The Effutu MP highlighted the over $800 million waiver given to Meridian Port Services (MPS) in 2016 by the Mahama-led administration, citing numerous other waivers granted by former President Mahama without parliamentary approval.

He criticized what he called the “outrageous tax giveaway,” emphasizing that for every $1 invested by MPS, the government gave them 55 cents in tax waivers.

Specifically, MPS was exempted from corporate income tax for ten years, with reduced corporate tax of 15% for an additional five years after that.

They were also exempt from taxes on dividends to shareholders for 20 years, along with concessions on Value Added Taxes, NHIL, customs duties, and withholding taxes.

The majority leader further mentioned beneficiaries of unconstitutional tax waivers, including Dzata Cement, and criticized the designation of some companies as strategic investors by GIPC, leading to tax waivers without parliamentary approval, which he deemed unconstitutional, illegal, and unethical.

President Mahama singlehandedly sat in his office and approved tax waivers in 2015 for the so-called strategic investors. Conspicuous on the list of beneficiaries were:

    Ecobank

    Garden City Mall

    Ghacem Ltd

    Vincien Sugar Refinery Ghana Ltd

    Boston Investments LTD

Bawumia’s Volta campaign tour needless – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and his bid for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

They described his recent visit to the Volta Region as a “waste of time and resources.”

According to the NDC, Dr. Bawumia’s visit was viewed as a farewell tour, signaling his imminent departure from the political arena. James Gunu, the NDC Volta Regional Secretary, reiterated this sentiment in a statement released on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Gunu stated, “We are also not surprised that Dr. Bawumia miserably lost the NPP’s flagbearer contest to Ken Agyepong in the Volta Region. Voltarians, whether NDC or NPP, naturally prefer honest, truthful, and trustworthy people.”

Highlighting the disparity between Dr. Bawumia’s reception and the overwhelming support former President John Dramani Mahama received from Voltarians during the NDC presidential primaries, Gunu attributed this to the perceived neglect of the Volta Region by the Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led government.

Furthermore, the NDC demanded the payment of $126 million cedi equivalent, which they allege is owed to Volta Region constituencies as part of the “One Million Dollar Per Constituency” promise made over the past seven years.

Gunu also criticized the government’s failure to fulfill its promise of building model schools in all Zongo communities, labeling it “a big deception.”

  • Okaikoi South NDC parliamentary candidate accuses NPP of blocking his bid to fix Avenor roads

Okaikoi South NDC parliamentary candidate accuses NPP of blocking his bid to fix Avenor roads

Parliamentary candidate representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Okaikoi South, Ernest Adomako,  has accused members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency of blocking his efforts to single handedly fix  the deteriorating roads in the Avenor area.

Adomako, in a phone-in interview with an Accra based radio station expressed his frustration at the ongoing challenges he faces in trying to address the poor road conditions.

According to him, “this is the second time I have tried to tackle the poor road conditions in this area, which has proved futile,” he stated.

Mr. Adomako contends that the resistance from the NPP members in the constituency is driven by their apprehension of embarrassment and potential loss of credibility. This is particularly significant as the incumbent MP of Avenor and its surroundings currently represents the NPP.

“I believe the NPP knows they will be discredited if they allow an individual like me, under the ticket of the NDC, to successfully repair the roads,” Adomako said on May 30,2024.

He further emphasised the absence of support from the local Assembly, despite numerous notifications and requests for collaboration.

“We have informed the Assembly on several occasions and continue to do so, but they have not availed themselves to help the course and give us the go-ahead,” he noted.

His disgruntlement and frustration not only stem from just the prohibition of fixing the Avenor road but also fixing the Bubuashie-Atiko road, which was his first attempt.

However, despite the financial intensity involved in fixing the roads, he contends his commitment and readiness to do so anyway.

“It is a financially intensive initiative, so money will go into this. This is the second time I have tried fixing the road and being hindered. The first one is around the Bubuashie-Atiko stretch leading to the Darkuman post office Kokompe. The road there is appalling, and in the same vein, I was instructed to halt the project.”

We, the NDC, refuse to idly sit back and watch our roads deteriorate. We took the initiative to fix it. The construction is not an easy fix where you say you will pour sand, and that is it. It is so depleted and deteriorated. Just sand will not fix it. It is a busy road. The government should not even wait for an individual to do this” he added.

He emphasised the broader implications of poor infrastructure on the nation’s image and business environment saying, “this is why nobody takes Ghana seriously; nobody respects us nor regards us. Ghanaian businesses are struggling, so why should our roads be bad to top all that?

If we complain, then the people in authority insult us. And worst of all, if an individual avails himself to do the work that needs to be done, they refuse to have you do it.”

NDC hasn’t provided the court with audio accusing AG because it is doctored – Adom-Otchere

Host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere has reacted to the recent developments in the ambulance case involving Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the state, being represented by Attorney General Godfred Dame.

Dr. Ato Forson, a former Deputy Finance Minister, is facing trial for his alleged involvement in the procurement of faulty ambulances for Ghana. This case has sparked public conversations, with some individuals calling for the Attorney General’s resignation.

The Attorney General has insisted that the 3rd accused, Richard Jakpa, had sent letters requesting a plea bargain, which had not been accepted.

However, the NDC countered these claims by playing a tape during a press conference on Tuesday, May 28. The NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, stated that Jakpa never requested a plea bargain.

Reacting to this, Mr Adom-Otchere noted that the audio being circulated by the NDC is doctored. According to him, due to this reason, the opposition party has failed to tender in the document in court as evidence.

He noted that Mr Jakpa’s voice is so audible in the audio because a voiceover has been included in the said audio.

“Jakpa did a voiceover which has been added that is why his voice is very loud. That is why the tape has taken that long. From last Thursday Sammy Gyamfi said they had it, it is today (Tuesday) that they bringing it. They didn’t tender it in court. They know that the tape will not stand the test of court because in court, there are forensics and when they tender it, the forensic experts will come.”

“If the NDC that this tape will help their Ato Forson case in court, they should tender it,” he added.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that the alleged audio tape involving Attorney General Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case, released by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been tampered with.

At a press conference on Tuesday, May 28, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) described the tape as distorted and manipulated, claiming it was “cut and pieced together” by the NDC to create a misleading impression.

Accra is grid-locked, vote for me to make it a new city – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, former president, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to kickstart a feasibility study for a new city outside Accra to tackle the mounting congestion in the capital.

This initiative aims to establish a fresh hub of growth, sparking numerous job opportunities during construction and beyond.

While Accra will retain its status as the capital, Mahama proposes to ease congestion by relocating select government ministries, departments, agencies, and financial institutions to the new city.

The envisioned future city, spanning Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta regions, would likely be positioned near the Volta Lake.

It is envisioned as a sustainable, digital metropolis with tourist attractions, industrial parks, and financial services, envisioned as a bustling 24-hour hub.

“We will commence a feasibility study with a plan to construct a new city. Accra is grid-locked, and the time has arrived for us to relocate certain parts of the government services from Accra. Accra will remain the capital, but we will transfer a portion of it elsewhere.”

There is already available land on the Accra Plains and the opposite bank of the Volta Lake. Moreover, we are establishing a port terminal in Mpakadan to transport cargo to the northern part of the country.”

“There is abundant land in that area, allowing us to relocate some ministries, agencies, and departments out of the city and alleviate congestion,” he said.

The former President said, “Accra has expanded to its limits, and if we are not cautious, managing it as a sustainable city will become difficult. Thus, we will initiate the planning, design, and feasibility process. I anticipate that this project may take around 20 years to complete, but we need to take the first steps. Subsequent generations can then continue where we left off.”

Mahama emphasized that much of the investment for this venture will come from private sector partnerships.

These declarations were made during an interaction with the European Union Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

You can’t intimidate me, I have a share in your power – Hopeson Adorye tells govt

A former Deputy National Security Coordinator, Hopeson Adorye, has criticized the presidency, accusing individuals in Jubilee House of using intimidation tactics against him.

He voiced his frustration over what he perceives as unfair treatment by the administration he helped bring to power.

Mr Adorye highlighted his contributions to the current administration’s success and asserted his right to a share of the power held by Jubilee House.

“For me to do party work and employ a strategy for you to win power. I am saying it here today, all those in the Jubilee House, nobody can use the power to intimidate me. I have a percentage in the power,” Adorye proclaimed on a panel discussion on Onua TV on May 29, 2024.

He added “You have cut me off from benefiting from the monetary aspect, no problem. But for the power to defend yourself in town, there is no way for someone to intimidate me.”

Mr Adorye, who was expelled from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) months ago, admitted during a radio interview that during the 2016 elections, he and others used dynamites in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) strongholds to intimidate voters.

This revelation has led to his arrest and pending trial.

He was released on 20,000 Ghana cedis bail by a Circuit Court on May 23 over charges of publication of false news.

This followed his overnight detention at the Ministries Police Station after being invited to the CID headquarters of the Ghana Police Service earlier in the week.
