NDC Ashanti Regional Chair given ‘dirty blow’ by police during ‘Enough is Enough’ demo

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Nana Kwasi, has reportedly received a “dirty blow” from the police during the party’s ongoing protest in Kumasi.

Speaking to Joy News he indicated that the assault came after he attempted to enter the premises of the Electoral Commission (EC)’s office to hand over the party’s petition.

“A police officer has given me a dirty blow, I was trying to enter the premises to present the petition but they are refusing me,” he stated.

The NDC’s nationwide demonstration which was expected to be a peaceful one took a violent turn in Kumasi as members clashed with police officers on Tuesday, September 17.

Per Joy News’ report, the EC’s office in the Ashanti Region was broken into by the protestors with some doors being destroyed.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects involved in the chaos has been arrested, the said person tried to trespass the barricade.

The demonstration which is ongoing across all 16 regions, aims to pressure the EC into approving a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register.

The decision follows the party’s discovery of significant anomalies in the register during a recent exhibition exercise.

Addressing the demonstrators in Accra, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson stressed the need for a thorough audit to resolve irregularities in the voters’ register, ensuring the credibility of the upcoming elections.

He further disclosed that the NDC is contemplating recalling Parliament to intensify efforts toward this demand.

The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration is underway, with protesters calling for a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register.

To ensure public safety and maintain order, police officers have taken strategic positions across the country, particularly in Accra’s Kwame Nkrumah Circle, where what appears to be a human barricade has been established.

The Ghana Police Service has issued guidelines for the nationwide protest, emphasizing the importance of adhering to designated routes and timelines.

The police have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining a peaceful environment during the demonstration.

Also, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has issued a stern warning to participants in the party’s nationwide demonstration.

He emphasised that the NDC will not tolerate any disruptive behaviour during the protests.

Stone me at Independence Square if Mahama wins December polls – Pastor

Founder of the Hezekiah Apostolic Prayer Ministry, Apostle Kwabena Owusu Adjei, has predicted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face defeat in the 2024 elections.

According to him, the NDC has spiritually fallen out of favor with God, and as a result, will lose the upcoming election.

During a panel discussion on Top TV, Apostle Adjei emphasized that if his prophecy fails, he would willingly offer himself to be stoned. He boldly stated, “You see, every year when we are going into an election, I write a book and predict whoever would win the election. And whoever I project is the one that wins.”

He also warned that unless the NDC repents and changes its ways, they will continue to lose elections. Furthermore, he urged the party to reconsider its leadership, suggesting that John Dramani Mahama should be replaced if the NDC intends to win future elections.

When asked what would happen if the NDC manages to win, Apostle Adjei remained steadfast in his prediction, saying, “They should stone me. I will volunteer and come and stand at Independence Square for Ghanaians to stone me because it is impossible… I am saying if the NDC is able to enter the Jubilee House to change its name again from Jubilee House, stone me.”

Enough is Enough demo: Violent protestors will not go unchecked – NDC warns

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has issued a firm warning to participants ahead of the party’s nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

He made it clear that any disruptive behavior during the protests will not be tolerated by the NDC.

Speaking to Citi FM on Monday, September 16, Gbande revealed that the party’s internal security team is ready to take swift action against anyone who attempts to cause trouble.

The demonstration, aimed at pressuring the Electoral Commission (EC) to audit the voter register, will be conducted in a lawful manner, according to Gbande.

He emphasized that NDC security personnel are fully prepared to maintain order and swiftly address any disruptions, ensuring the protest proceeds smoothly and peacefully. The party has put measures in place to guarantee a safe and orderly event.

“We will walk as slowly as possible, that will take us to the Electoral Commission peacefully…we also do know that our brothers from the NPP intended to let some people wear our T-shirts to come and pretend as if they were part of the demonstrators and cause trouble so that we would get a bad name.”

“We wouldn’t wait for the police to deal with such an act. We ourselves will detail our security guys to deal with such a threat the way it deserves if it shows its head.”

“Because the NDC and the people of Ghana intend to embark on a very peaceful demonstration. A peaceful, demonstration that will manifest our disgust to enforce the cleanup or an audit of our voter register. if anybody covertly arranges to come and perpetrate illegality in that demonstration, we will deal with that person with any force that we can marshal at that level so that we do not take a bad name home,” he stated.

The Ghana Police Service has released comprehensive guidelines for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration.

The protest which is scheduled to take place today, Tuesday September 17, across all 16 regions, aims to pressure the Electoral Commission into approving a forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register.

The Police have assured the public of their dedication to ensuring peace and order throughout the protest, urging participants to follow the designated routes and timeframes.

Below are the officially approved routes for the demonstration in each region:

  • NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ nationwide demo is today

NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ nationwide demo is today

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will stage a nationwide demonstration today, Tuesday, September 17, 2024, to pressure the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register.

The decision follows the party’s discovery of significant anomalies in the register during a recent exhibition exercise.

“On the 17th of this month [September], the NDC is embarking on a massive nationwide demonstration in all 16 regional capitals, descend on the electoral commission officers, and we in Accra will descend to the headquarters and present further petitions as to why we think that they should conduct themselves in a manner that will guarantee peaceful, free and fair election,” Asiedu Nketiah said.

NDC leaders and supporters will march to regional EC offices, while national executives deliver a formal petition to the EC headquarters in Accra.

After highlighting irregularities, the NDC called for a forensic audit of the register, but the EC declined the request, leading to further dissatisfaction.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC Director of Elections and IT, noted, “They [the EC] have not accepted the independent forensic audit as expected.”

The party now plans what they describe as a “historic” demonstration to hold the EC accountable and secure transparency and fairness ahead of the 2024 elections.

Asiedu Nketiah reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.

  • NDC Demo: Don’t join us if you are violent – Mahama

NDC Demo: Don’t join us if you are violent – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama Dramani, has urged calm and non-violence as the party embarks on nationwide protests today over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) management of voter register discrepancies.

Ahead of the demonstrations, Mahama stressed that the protest is intended to be peaceful, calling on participants to refrain from violence.

“This is a peaceful demonstration. It is not a violent demonstration. It is a peaceful demonstration. And so if you know you cannot be peaceful, don’t come.

“We want only the people of peace to join us,” the NDC flagbearer said, underscoring the party’s commitment to ensuring order throughout the protest.

The NDC’s concerns stem from what they allege are serious flaws in the voter register, discovered during a recent exhibition exercise. Although the party has demanded a forensic audit of the register, the EC has declined to undertake one, prompting the NDC to mobilize protests across the country.

Protesters will march to the EC offices in all 16 regional capitals, while party leaders will present petitions at the EC headquarters and Parliament in Accra.

During his address, Mahama urged protestors to cooperate with the police and avoid any confrontations. “The police are here to protect us; they are our friends. We have no reason to attack them,” he noted, urging demonstrators to go home peacefully after delivering the petitions.

The NDC hopes this demonstration will lead to electoral reforms ahead of the elections, with thousands expected to participate nationwide in defense of what they see as the integrity of the electoral process.

  • Clarify your demands on voters’ register audit – Kweku Baako to NDC

Clarify your demands on voters’ register audit – Kweku Baako to NDC

Veteran journalist and social commentator, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has expressed doubts about the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) call for a forensic audit of the voters’ register just three months ahead of the general elections.

He questioned the specific issues the NDC had identified with the register that would justify such an audit.

Mr Baako argued that clarity on the audit’s details would help shed light on the NDC’s demand. Without this, he believes their stance might come across as overly simplistic and intellectually far-fetched.

Additionally, Mr Baako raised concerns about how effective any recommendations from the audit could be, given the short time left before the 2024 elections.

He wrote, “Specificity! What is the scope and coverage of the independent forensic audit being demanded by the NDC? Have they made public the full complement of the specifics of their case for that demand? The issue of whether or not an audit,  forensic or otherwise, is needed now cannot be reduced to an academic or intellectual exercise. That’s an exercise in oversimplification and absurd intellectualism, which amuses me!

We’re dealing with realpolitik and statecraft.

Does it make sense to embark on a certain FORENSIC AUDIT by an entity 3 months before an election?

He added that, in practical terms, it’s worth considering whether undertaking such a forensic audit so close to an election makes sense.

2024 polls: Politics of ideas and not insults, be decent with your language – Bawumia to Mahama

NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with former President John Mahama, criticizing his recent statements as inappropriate.

Dr. Bawumia was responding to remarks in which Mahama accused some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and religious leaders of hypocrisy for not criticizing the current NPP administration.

While campaigning in the Amasaman constituency on Monday, Dr. Bawumia stressed that such comments were unbecoming of a former president, calling for a more respectful tone in political discussions.

“You all know that the December polls are between myself and former President Mahama, but we all know, and he also knows, that he will fail, so he gets peeved at the least thing.

I have heard that today he insulted pastors, chiefs, imams, and CSOs, saying they are all hypocrites. Have you heard this before?”

“Is that how a former president should speak?… Recently too, he insulted the EC and said that the NPP government is foolish. Have you heard this before?

“Is that how a former president should speak? We must have some standards of decency in the language we speak as politicians. This election is about ideas, not insults,” he stated.

NPP, NDC supporters clash during DRIP equipment launch at Gomoa West

On Monday morning, September 16, 2024 a heated confrontation erupted between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region.

The clash centered around the commissioning of machinery for the District Road Infrastructure Project (DRIP).

The conflict ignited when NDC supporters raised objections to the display of images featuring Bismark Basie Nkum, the NPP’s Gomoa West parliamentary candidate, on the DRIP machinery.

Their dissatisfaction quickly escalated, almost leading to physical violence between the two factions.

Baisie Nkum who is also the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa West, accused Member of Parliament Richard Gyan Mensah of brandishing a pistol and making threats against local NPP leaders.

A viral video on social media captures the tense moment, showing the DCE’s allegations of the MP’s aggressive behavior toward NPP supporters during the altercation.

Court grants bail to 3 NDC members who destroyed NPP’s posters at Awutu Senya

A court in Awutu Breku, Central Region, has granted bail to three National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who were previously remanded for allegedly tearing down posters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya West, Eugene Arhin.

The suspects, including Cassius Otoo Larbi, the NDC’s Communications Officer for Awutu Senya West, were granted self-recognizance bail by Her Ladyship Naomi Konto after their court appearance on Monday, September 16, 2024.

According to a report from Jacob Kubi of Despite Media, tensions rose when police insisted the suspects produce their Ghana Cards, drawing a crowd of NDC supporters to the court premises and resulting in a brief standoff.

After their release, the three were scheduled to return to court on September 24, 2024.

The suspects had been accused of removing the NPP candidate’s posters from earthmoving equipment provided through the government’s District Road Improvement Project (DRIP) and threatening an eyewitness who captured the incident on video.

Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, MP for Awutu Senya East and the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency, labeled the charges as insignificant, noting that her posters had also been vandalized. However, District Chief Executive Moses Arhinful Acquah emphasized that the issue was not just about the posters but also the threats directed at the eyewitness.

  • Soldiers would have overthrown NDC if it were corrupt like NPP – Mahama

Soldiers would have overthrown NDC if it were corrupt like NPP – Mahama

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama, has criticized what he describes as rampant hypocrisy in Ghanaian society regarding the scrutiny of the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

During a campaign event in the Okaikwei North Constituency within the Greater Accra Region, Mahama voiced his concerns about the double standards that he believes are evident in the public’s reaction to governmental corruption.

He pointed out that the extent of corruption witnessed under President Akufo-Addo’s government would have prompted a military coup if it had occurred under an NDC administration.

“I am saying this; if this level of corruption and bribery were happening under an NDC government, by now soldiers would have overthrown our government.

“I tell you, the corruption and thievery happening under the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government, if it were to happen under an NDC government, the government would be overthrown,” he added.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has taken aim at what he perceives as societal hypocrisy regarding the current government’s conduct.

Addressing NDC supporters in the Okaikwei North Constituency, Mahama lamented that many previously outspoken critics have gone silent under the Akufo-Addo administration but will likely reappear once the NDC is back in power.

“We always point out the hypocrisy of our society, and while I am confident that the NDC will win the upcoming election, you wait until we assume power, you will see all those who lost their voices during the NPP era suddenly regain their voices,” he stated.

Mahama expressed his frustration with the lack of vocal opposition from Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other critical voices, arguing that their silence has allowed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to engage in misgovernance.

He suggested that these voices, currently muted, will become active again once the NDC assumes leadership.

  • We won’t back off from NDC’s strongholds – NPP

We won’t back off from NDC’s strongholds – NPP

The former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong, has highlighted the party’s recent strides in traditionally challenging regions as the December 7 general election approaches.

During an appearance on Peace FM, as reported by GhanaWeb, Mr Agyepong praised the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for making significant inroads in areas previously dominated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to Mr Agyepong, Bawumia’s appeal across various ethnic and religious groups has bolstered the party’s presence in regions where the NPP has historically struggled.

“I am confident that areas that were previously no-go zones, today, we are making headway. I’m not saying we are going to take them over, but at least we are challenging them on their own turf. Places like Bono East, which have historically been difficult for the NPP, we will battle it out with them.
“If Bawumia can secure about 40% of votes in NDC strongholds and add that to what we usually get in our favored regions, he will be in a very good position to win the election. I believe Bawumia will secure 53% of the votes,” Agyepong stated.

Agyepong, who previously served as Communications Director under President J.A. Kufuor, also lauded Bawumia for dispelling longstanding NDC criticisms.

He noted that the NDC had previously painted the NPP as an Ashanti-dominated party lacking respect for others, particularly targeting Zongo communities with historical grievances from the Aliens Compliance Order era.

“Our colleagues in the NDC have, since the 1992 elections, consistently spread the narrative that the NPP, which is Ashanti-dominated, doesn’t respect others. It’s even worse when they go to the Zongos because they remind people of the Aliens Compliance Order, falsely claiming that if the NPP comes to power, they will once again be driven out of Ghana, as happened during Dr. Busia’s era. So, the elderly among them who remember the hardship they went through naturally gravitated toward the NDC. This narrative has persisted, although it has diminished somewhat. It remains embedded and is not easy to overcome.

“That is why former President Mahama said we should wait and see if Bawumia would be elected as the leader of our party. The NDC said Bawumia would be used and discarded, and that the NPP would never allow a northerner to lead the party. Eventually, 61% voted for him, which is the highest any first-time presidential aspirant has ever garnered. Dr. Bawumia is a well-liked figure across the board, and party members speak highly of him. The way he has connected with people has endeared him to many,” Agyepong emphasized.

He added: “Some people abuse the platform they are given, but Bawumia has spent his 16 years as running mate and Vice President very well. He has helped people from both the Zongos and Christian communities. So, that major weapon the NDC once had — we have now disarmed them of a significant portion of their campaign propaganda. Now, we have a ‘Zongo boy’ as our flagbearer.”

  • NDC to begin stakeholder engagement to combat galamsey

NDC to begin stakeholder engagement to combat galamsey

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled plans to collaborate with a range of stakeholders in its fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, as part of its commitment to protecting Ghana’s environment.

In a statement released on Sunday, September 15, Alhassan Suhuyini, the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, detailed the party’s intention to work with traditional leaders, local communities, environmental organizations, and industry experts to implement sustainable solutions from the party’s 2024 manifesto aimed at curbing the galamsey issue.

The NDC believes that a cooperative approach is crucial for effectively addressing illegal mining and mitigating its severe impact on the country’s natural resources.

The party stressed that combating galamsey requires a multi-faceted strategy, including enhanced enforcement, promotion of responsible mining practices, and the provision of alternative livelihoods for those involved in illegal mining.

The NDC recognized the major challenges posed by galamsey, such as water pollution, deforestation, and the destruction of farmlands, which continue to threaten both the environment and the well-being of many Ghanaians.

Through stakeholder engagement, the party aims to cultivate a shared sense of responsibility in addressing the crisis.

The NDC also raised concerns about the lack of transparency and accountability in the government’s current efforts to tackle galamsey.

They emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies to operate free from political interference in their fight against illegal mining.

The party believes that involving stakeholders will help restore public trust and ensure accountability for all parties involved in either perpetuating or combating the galamsey menace.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s environment for future generations and believes that a broad, inclusive approach is essential for eradicating illegal mining activities permanently.

The party pledged to continue advocating for stronger policies and community-based initiatives that promote sustainable environmental practices while addressing the socio-economic factors driving illegal mining.

“Moreover, we assure all concerned Ghanaians of the NDC and President Mahama’s future government commitment to engage constructively with civil society organizations and labour unions to implement comprehensive policies, as crafted in our manifesto, that will address both the economic realities that drive illegal mining and the urgent need for environmental protection.”

“We acknowledge more than ever how essential it is for all stakeholders to work together to find sustainable solutions that preserve our natural resources for future generations.”

  • Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Upcoming protest is about electoral issues, not personal matters – Mahama to EC

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has defended the party’s decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC), citing concerns about the voters’ register.

The NDC has voiced apprehensions regarding potential discrepancies in the register, warning that inaccuracies could jeopardize the credibility of the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking during a community engagement as part of the second phase of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mahama urged Ghanaians to back the NDC’s push for a credible and transparent voters’ register, emphasizing that this would ensure a fair electoral process.

Mahama clarified the party’s stance, saying, “And I just want to make a point that our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC. Our issue with the Electoral Commission is that we want peace during and after the election.

“So when we raise issues about the electoral process, it is because we want the EC to sit up and do its job so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process.

He further elaborated, “And the only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it. And that is why on the 17th of this month, that is next Tuesday, we are doing a demonstration at the EC office. And that demonstration is not only NDC, it is all Ghanaians who are willing to join the demonstration so that we go and tell EC to sit up and do its work properly so that we have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of that demonstration.”

Mahama also announced an upcoming demonstration, saying, “On the 17th of this month, next Tuesday, we will demonstrate at the EC office.

This protest isn’t just for the NDC—it’s for all Ghanaians who want to join. Our aim is to demand that the EC steps up and does its job properly, ensuring a peaceful election. That’s the sole purpose of the demonstration.”

Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has presented seven Mitsubishi pickup trucks to the party’s Regional Communication Officers.

This donation, made on behalf of the party’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, is intended to acknowledge the efforts of the officers and improve their ability to advance the party’s agenda.

The trucks will be allocated to the regions of Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Bono, Bono East, Western, and Greater Accra.

In a post on social media, Gyamfi expressed his hope that this contribution would inspire the officers to effectively promote the party’s policies and help secure a significant win in the upcoming December 7 elections.

He also mentioned that a previous donation of four Mitsubishi pickups to the Savannah, Ashanti, Eastern, and Volta regions is already proving beneficial.

In addition, over 140 motorcycles have been distributed to Constituency Communication Officers nationwide.

  • You didn’t show interest in 2016 voter register with photos of plants, animals – EC jabs NDC

You didn’t show interest in 2016 voter register with photos of plants, animals – EC jabs NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has responded to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following the party’s calls for an independent forensic audit into the 2024 voters’ register.

The EC expressed surprise at the NDC’s recent interest in the register, citing the lack of similar concerns during the 2016 election period.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on Thursday, August 12, Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Samuel Tettey, pointed out that the 2016 voters’ register included images of plants and animals representing voters, yet the NDC did not call for an audit at that time.

“Perhaps this is the first time the NDC has taken interest in the register. Otherwise, one would have expected them to call for such an audit of the 2016 register, which contained photos of plants and animals representing voters,” Mr. Tettey stated.

The Electoral Commission rejected claims that the voters’ register had ever undergone an independent audit in the past. Mr. Tettey emphasized, “It is important to note that, contrary to what is being alluded, since 1992, the voters register has never been audited.”

Regarding the NDC’s request for a forensic audit of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register, Mr. Tettey maintained that the Voters’ Register Exhibition Exercise conducted by the Commission is sufficient to identify and address any discrepancies. He explained that the Exhibition Exercise, which has been a part of the electoral process since 1992, ensures that errors are rectified in line with the legal framework outlined in the Constitutional Instrument on the Registration of Voters (C.I. 91, as amended by C.I. 126).

“The Voter Register Exhibition Exercise itself serves as an audit, allowing for the correction of discrepancies identified through our established procedures,” Mr. Tettey noted, stressing that this process is effective and well-established.

The NDC had raised five specific concerns about the Provisional Voters Register during a meeting on September 6, 2024, calling for both a forensic audit and a re-exhibition of the Register. However, the Electoral Commission has responded by asserting that their current methods are sufficient to address any issues, and any discrepancies flagged during the Exhibition are being dealt with promptly.

Mr. Tettey added, “The process we have in place is tried and tested. Our focus is on resolving issues through established channels rather than introducing unnecessary external audits.” He encouraged the NDC to collaborate by providing specific information on the discrepancies they have identified to facilitate a proper review.

While the NDC continues to push for further scrutiny of the 2024 voters’ register, the Electoral Commission remains firm in its position that the current procedures, including the Exhibition Exercise, are robust enough to ensure an accurate and transparent register for the upcoming elections.

A 12-classroom block for your votes – Ken Agyapong tells Kintampo North residents

The Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has struck a deal with the people of Kintampo North in the Bono East Region ahead of the December polls.

Addressing the residents on Thursday, September 12, Agyapong pledged to construct a 12-classroom block if they vote in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He noted that, despite the residents’ repeated support for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party failed to provide significant assistance.

Agyapong emphasized that it is now time for the residents to back the ruling party to secure impactful development projects for the area.

He criticized the NDC for neglecting the constituency, claiming that this neglect has led to the sidelining of individuals from the area for important positions.

Agyapong highlighted the improvements since the NPP came to power, noting that Kintampo now boasts a Director General of Immigration and the Controller General from the Region.

“Do you know something, we have voted and voted but you don’t vote for NPP. For all the 32 years you have been voting you have just Deputy Minister in your constituency. Let me tell you something under Akuko-Addo government the Director General Immigration was picked from Kintampo. Controller General is also from Kintampo. If you vote for NPP, I will personally build a 12-unit classroom block for you,” he added.

  • NDC demands forensic audit of ‘incompetent’ EC’s voter register

NDC demands forensic audit of ‘incompetent’ EC’s voter register

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has ramped up its demand for an independent forensic audit of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), alleging that the commission has tampered with the voters’ register in anticipation of the December 7, 2024 elections.

In a statement issued by Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections and IT, the NDC has claimed significant irregularities in the EC’s procedures and is calling for urgent measures to safeguard the integrity of the forthcoming elections.

The NDC’s statement, released on September 13, 2024, asserts that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aiding an “incompetent and criminally crooked” Electoral Commission, characterizing the EC headquarters as “a crime scene waiting to be exorcised after the December elections.”

The party took issue with the EC for not releasing data from a hard drive that the NDC had provided for a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

The NDC has raised concerns about the EC’s decision to retain the hard drive for a week following their most recent meeting.

“Why is the EC not returning our hard drive which has been in their custody for the past week after our encounter with them last week Friday. An encounter which they blocked the media from covering?,” the statement read.

The NDC has outlined three primary demands from their recent discussion with the EC, which they claim have yet to be addressed:

    • Conduct an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register.
    • Submit the findings from the forensic audit.
    • Re-exhibit the register after the audit.

The NDC argues that the EC’s reluctance to meet these demands erodes trust and hampers collaboration between the parties.

Additionally, the NDC has pointed out numerous errors in the voters’ register, including the unlawful inclusion of 243,540 previous transfers with the 2024 transfers, unclear voter transfer records, and missing voter information.

To address these issues, the NDC has planned a public demonstration called the “Enough Is Enough” rally on Tuesday, September 17, to call for increased transparency and accountability from the EC.

The party has reiterated its call for a forensic audit to uncover the extent of alleged manipulation and ensure the credibility of the electoral process.

They have outlined several critical questions they believe a forensic audit should answer: The scale of illegal voter transfers and the systemic flaws that permitted them, the accuracy and timeliness of the provisional voters’ register, the potential effects of the identified errors on election fairness, how past mistakes compare and what lessons can be learned to avoid future issues and a timeline for resolving these problems to ensure the register’s credibility.

The NDC’s statement underscores the necessity of a forensic audit as an essential step to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process, urging the EC to stop justifying what they term as “avoidable errors.”

As the December 2024 elections approach, the NDC’s demands and allegations have raised concerns about the electoral process’s integrity. Their insistence on an independent forensic audit underscores the growing tension between political actors and the Electoral Commission, which must address these issues to preserve public confidence in the election’s fairness.

The NDC remains resolute that without a transparent and accountable electoral process, the legitimacy of the upcoming elections may be compromised.

  • Protesting won’t make voter register credible – EC tells NDC

Protesting won’t make voter register credible – EC tells NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has addressed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) concerns over the 2024 Voters Register, clarifying that protests will not help resolve the issue.

In response to the NDC’s claims, the EC has requested the party to present specific data on the discrepancies it has raised, but so far, no data has been provided.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Commissioner of Operations, emphasized the need for the NDC to bring their concerns forward for a formal investigation rather than resort to demonstrations.

The EC assured the NDC during prior engagements that any issues would be thoroughly investigated within a week, provided the necessary data is submitted. Without this information, however, progress is stalled.

The EC urged dialogue and encouraged former President John Mahama to advise his party to engage with the Commission. It reaffirmed its commitment to addressing any inconsistencies and delivering a credible voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections.

Additionally, the EC reassured the public and political stakeholders of its dedication to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections, and requested trust as it works to correct any discrepancies in the register before December 2024.

“The Commission strongly believes that the surest way to attaining a credible and robust Register is not through demonstrations. There is simply nothing to demonstrate about. This is because the Commission has repeatedly requested the data on discrepancies from the NDC to no avail. We are of the view that, the stance taken by the NDC will not produce a credible register.

“The Commission is of the view that the best place to resolve the issues they have identified is the discussion table. We urge them to submit details of the discrepancies they have identified to enable the Commission investigate the issues and demonstrate to them that the concerns they have, have been resolved. As indicated earlier the EC assured the NDC during the meeting that it would conduct a thorough investigation and report on the issues they had detected within a week. Why are they refusing to submit the data to enable the EC to investigate and provide a report?

“The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is the discussion table, not on the streets. Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted. We call on the former President, His Excellency

“John Mahama, an eminent and respected statesman of the Republic, to encourage and bring his party to the table as that is the best place to address issues and ascertain the truth regarding the Voters Register
We are confident that the former President will heed to our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the discussion table. On our part, we assure the NDC of a transparent process that would demonstrate to them that all their concerns have been resolved.

“The Commission wishes to state that, almost all the discrepancies identified have to date been corrected. As in 2020, the Commission is committed to providing the country and all Political Parties with a robust and credible Voters Register that will guarantee free, fair, transparent and credible General Election in December 2024. We urge the public to trust the EC to do this again and again.”

NDC official, 2 others remanded for removing NPP’s posters in Awutu Senya West

The Awutu Bereku District Court has remanded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Officer for the Awutu Senya West constituency, Cassius Otoo Larbi, along with two others, into police custody.

The court’s decision, presided over by Her Ladyship Naomi Konto, follows accusations that the trio threatened to harm an eyewitness who confronted them for removing posters of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Eugene Kofi Bentum Arhin.

The posters were allegedly removed from equipment used in the District Road Improvement Project. The suspects have been remanded for five days and are set to reappear in court on Monday, September 16, 2024.

Awutu Senya West MP Gizella Tetteh Agbotui voiced concerns that her posters had also been torn down, dismissing the court case as “petty.”

However, District Chief Executive Moses Arhinful Acquah emphasized that the case centered on the threat made against the eyewitness, not just the removal of posters.

Acquah further referenced a prior incident where Larbi and others allegedly disrupted Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s speech at the Awubia Festival by playing loud music, which attracted the attention of national security operatives.

Help us engage NDC in meaningful talks – EC to Mahama

The Electoral Commission (EC) has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to encourage the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to engage in discussions to address the alleged discrepancies in the provisional voters register.

During a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, September 12, 2024, Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, made a direct appeal to the former President.

He emphasized that dialogue, rather than protests, is the most effective approach to ensuring the credibility of the 2024 Voters Register.

“The EC believes that the best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is at the discussion table, not on the streets. Taking to the streets will not ensure a credible register. It will only cause tensions and suspicions which are unwarranted.

“We call on the former President, His Excellency John Mahama, an eminent and respected statesman of the Republic, to encourage and bring his party to the table as that is the best place to address issues and ascertain the truth regarding the Voters Register.

“We are confident that the former President will heed our calls and do everything in his power to bring his party to the discussion table. On our part, we assure the NDC of a transparent process that would demonstrate to them that all their concerns have been resolved.”

He called on Mahama, describing him as a “respected statesman,” to persuade his party to join the talks, where concerns over the register can be properly addressed.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has emphasized the importance of former President John Mahama bringing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the discussion table, noting the party’s failure to provide evidence of alleged discrepancies in the Provisional Voters Register.

According to the EC, during a meeting on September 6, 2024, the NDC promised to share details of these discrepancies but has since failed to do so despite multiple requests.

The EC highlighted that five concerns were raised by the NDC in the meeting, but the party subsequently informed the public that the EC had rejected its request for a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

In response, the NDC announced plans for a nationwide demonstration on September 17, citing the EC’s refusal to conduct the audit. However, during a press conference on Thursday, Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations, clarified that the EC had requested the NDC to provide evidence of the alleged discrepancies, but no such documentation was shared despite multiple follow-ups.

Tettey also refuted allegations from the NDC that the EC had added 50,000 ghost names to the register, dismissing these claims as unfounded.

“We have also noted comments from the NDC alluding to ghost names in the register. We are aware that there may be dead persons on the register because several persons die each year. One of the key purposes of the Exhibition Exercise is to allow relatives of the dead to initiate the process of expunging their names from the Register. The NDC indicated at the meeting that it had identified some 50,000 persons who were dead on the Register.

“The Commission once again requested the details of the 50,000 dead persons and assured the NDC that it would work with the District Assembly and Birth and Death Registry to expunge the names from the Register. As with the data on the discrepancies identified by the NDC, we are yet to receive the list of the dead.”

The EC assured the public of its dedication to delivering a robust and credible voters’ register for the upcoming elections.

  • Arrest Pius Hadzide for role in Australian visa scandal – Basintale

Arrest Pius Hadzide for role in Australian visa scandal – Basintale

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Pius Enam Hadzide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, following his recent admission of facilitating the travel of Ghanaians to Australia during the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Mr Hadzide’s remarks made during his current parliamentary campaign, have sparked renewed controversy. His seeming admission is viewed by the NDC as evidence of impropriety, especially given the context of the Australian visa scandal that led to the arrest of 60 Ghanaians posing as journalists in Australia in 2018.

The scandal, which saw Mr Hadzide temporarily suspended from his role as Deputy Sports Minister, has resurfaced following his public acknowledgment of involvement in the travel arrangements.

In his campaign, Hadzide drew upon his time in the sports ministry to highlight his ability to create opportunities for young people, promising to facilitate travel to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if elected to parliament.

“Nananom, do you know something? If you’re from Ghana and flying to Australia, it’s an 18-hour flight, and people went [to Australia] through me,” Hadzide told his supporters in a campaign video that has since gone viral. He added, “The next World Cup, which will be played next year, will be in America. It will take just seven hours to get there. If you want your children to go to America to work and bring money to this community, vote for me. No matter where you are from in this constituency, I will facilitate your travel if I become your MP.”

This promise, aimed at showcasing his ability to provide international opportunities for his constituents, has been met with criticism, particularly from the NDC. Malik Basintale, the Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, strongly condemned Hadzide’s admission, calling for immediate legal action against him.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, September 12, Basintale stated, “We know that this declaration may be a mission impossible because Pius Enam Hadzide is not just learning from himself. He is learning from his boss, the chief mother serpent of corruption, President Akufo-Addo, and his Vice President Dr Bawumia. We are calling for the immediate dismissal of Pius Enam Hadzide as the CEO for the National Youth Authority.”

He continued, “He has openly admitted that he was guilty in the Australian Visa Scandal and must be arrested and prosecuted without delay.”

    The Australian Visa Scandal

The 2018 Australian visa scandal unfolded during the 21st Commonwealth Games, where 60 Ghanaians, posing as journalists, were arrested in Australia for attempting to enter the country under false pretenses. In response, President Nana Akufo-Addo suspended Hadzide as Deputy Sports Minister pending investigations by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

A statement from the presidency at the time explained, “This decision has been taken following preliminary investigations into the circumstances that led to the arrest of 60 Ghanaians, who had allegedly attempted to enter Australia by false pretenses in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games.”

By July 2018, Hadzide was exonerated of any involvement in the visa fraud and reinstated to office by President Akufo-Addo. The president declared during an NPP delegates’ conference in Koforidua, “On the Australian visa scandal, which has exonerated the suspended Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports from any complicity, I will lift his suspension on Monday and return him to office.”

While Hadzide’s role was previously cleared, his recent acknowledgment of facilitating travel to Australia has reignited public debate. The NDC views his comments as an admission of guilt, accusing him of misusing state resources for personal gain and urging authorities to take swift action.

Cancer fight gets boost as Nana Jane makes GHC50k donation to GNAT

On Wednesday, September 12, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, generously donated GHC50,000 to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Cancer Foundation.

The donation is part of an ongoing effort by the Foundation to secure funds for cancer treatment for teachers and their families.

The GNAT Cancer Foundation has raised concerns about the increasing number of cancer cases among teachers and their relatives, compounded by the high cost of treatment that many cannot afford. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s donation aims to address this urgent need and support those affected.

During the donation event at the Foundation’s offices in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang presented a banker’s draft and commended GNAT for its initiative in providing aid to its members battling cancer.

She emphasized the financial burden of cancer treatment and expressed her hope that her contribution will help raise awareness and encourage further support for the Foundation’s cause.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, as an advocate for education, stressed the importance of supporting teachers and their families in their fight against cancer and urged others to contribute to this vital cause.

“I want to appeal to the public that a fund like this has been set up. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, and I am also appealing to all the unions to come on board. Regardless of how you grow up to become, regardless of the profession you follow, you would have gone through school, and I will urge all to show empathy to support this initiative”, she appealed.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, expressed optimism that the GNAT Cancer Foundation’s fund will expand into a national resource, offering support to individuals across various professions.

She encouraged the Foundation’s leadership to focus on increasing awareness about preventive care as part of their initiatives.

In response, Mr. Christian Yaw Adinkra, chairman of the GNAT Cancer Foundation’s fundraising committee, praised Prof. Opoku-Agyemang for her generous contribution and called on others to follow her lead.

Additionally, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Member of Parliament for Adentan, also contributed personally during the same event.

  • NDC to embark on ‘historic’ demo on Sep. 17 over anomalies in voter register

NDC to embark on ‘historic’ demo on Sep. 17 over anomalies in voter register

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to hold a nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024, to protest the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of discrepancies in the voter register.

This decision comes after the party identified significant anomalies in the voter register during the recent exhibition exercise.

NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah revealed the party’s plans after submitting the presidential nomination forms on behalf of John Mahama, stating that the protest will take place across all 16 regional capitals.

NDC leaders and supporters will march to the EC’s regional offices, while the national executives will present a formal petition at the EC’s headquarters in Accra.

The NDC has expressed concerns about irregularities they identified in the voter register, which they believe could disenfranchise voters. Some of the key issues raised include:

    • Missing Names: The party found that the names of registered voters were missing from the list, potentially denying them their right to vote.
    • Misplaced on Lists: Qualified voters were wrongly placed on either the Exception List or the Multiple List, which could result in them being unable to vote on election day.
    • Disqualified Individuals: Despite being disqualified for multiple registrations or challenges, certain individuals were still included in the Main Provisional Voters Register (PVR).
    • Unauthorized Transfers: Some voters were transferred between polling stations without their knowledge, and old transfers that should have been resolved continued to appear.
    • Polling Station Changes: Voters were moved to different polling stations without their consent, creating confusion and potentially suppressing votes.

After these irregularities were flagged, the NDC requested a forensic audit of the voter register to address their concerns. However, the EC denied the request, prompting further dissatisfaction. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, stated, “They [the EC] have not accepted the independent forensic audit expectedly.”

The party is now moving forward with what they describe as a “historic” demonstration to hold the EC accountable and to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process ahead of the 2024 elections.

Asiedu Nketiah emphasized that the NDC remains committed to ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in a manner that guarantees peaceful, free, and fair elections.

Video: You don’t need the goal more than I do – Kudus clashes with Appiah Stadium at airport

Black Stars midfielder Mohammed Kudus found himself in an uncomfortable situation after being repeatedly criticised by Frank Kwaku Appiah, also known as Appiah Stadium, a well-known supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The West Ham United player eventually responded to the accusations, as Appiah Stadium continuously blamed him for not delivering his best performances for the national team.

The incident occurred at Prempeh I International Airport while Kudus and the Black Stars squad were preparing for their flight to Morocco for their upcoming match against Niger.

Initially, Kudus was happily interacting with airport staff, taking photos with them, when Appiah Stadium began his harsh commentary, questioning why Kudus couldn’t replicate his stellar club form with the Black Stars.

Although Kudus tried to ignore the criticisms at first, focusing on the fans, the relentless negative comments from Appiah Stadium eventually provoked him to respond.

Airport staff and some Ghanaians who were present urged Appiah Stadium to stop harassing the footballer, but Appiah Stadium would have none of that.

Kudus eventually left the scene to join his teammates and coaches, who flew out to Morocco on Saturday, September 7, 2024.

The Black Stars will, on Monday, September 9, take on Niger in their second game of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

  • NDC bemoans EC’s delay in accepting proposal for forensic audit of voter register

NDC bemoans EC’s delay in accepting proposal for forensic audit of voter register

Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, says the Electoral Commission (EC) has not agreed to its demands to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register.

According to him, the EC appears unwilling to open its books to scrutiny by anyone, and they are therefore not surprised by the Commission’s stance.

Speaking to the press after the Inter-Party Advisory Committee on September 6, he said “They have not accepted the independent forensic audit expectedly.”

“It is not all doctors who readily refer, it is not all workers who readily refer when issues are above them, some of them wait until bridges collapse.

Some of them wait until patients are on the verge of dying before they push them. We would have loved that the Electoral Commission accepted this.”

Mr. Boamah stated that conducting a forensic audit would restore public confidence in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) ability to oversee transparent and credible elections.

On September 10, the Minority in Parliament expressed concerns about the voter register exhibition, claiming it had been manipulated.

They argued that the voter register contains numerous inconsistencies and issues, which the EC has already acknowledged.

As such, they cannot vouch for the integrity of the voter register, reiterating the stance of the opposition NDC for a forensic audit of the register.

NDC calls for arrest of Napo over murder allegations against party

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the arrest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s running mate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, following his remarks accusing the NDC of involvement in the killing of pastors and spiritualists.

Speaking at a campaign rally, NAPO alleged that the NDC, while in power, was responsible for the deaths of religious figures and the destruction of mosques.

“They are the only people who kill pastors. They killed two pastors in Ghana. One of the pastors killed was Prophet Asare, and the other was Brother Amoako. They killed them in broad daylight. That was not even all; they killed a spiritualist, Nana Drobo, the one who invented the HIV drug. They killed him and left him in the bush. I’m not telling lies,” NAPO claimed.

He went on to add, “They are the ones who also demolish mosques. If you live in a Zongo and you vote for the NDC, when they come to power, they will destroy your mosques.”

These comments have sparked outrage within the NDC, prompting the party to call for NAPO’s arrest. Augustus Nana Akwesi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, in an interview with Neat FM on September 3, 2024, demanded that the police investigate these serious allegations.

“NAPO should have been picked up by the national security because if you can say on a campaign platform that the NDC killed pastors and spiritualists, and the national security is still in this country… So, if someone goes ahead and says the same thing, would the person be arrested?” Nana Akwesi questioned.

He further expressed frustration at the lack of action by authorities, stating, “In Accra, someone demolished the Big Six statue and NAPO has also accused the NDC of killing spiritualists, pastors, and others but the national security is not saying anything. We are just waiting for someone else to say something similar for us to see if there would be any form of arrest.”

Nana Akwesi emphasized that while the NDC desires peace, they would not tolerate being intimidated by such accusations. “Indeed, we want peace, but we won’t sit down and be intimidated because if the other half goes scot-free, we won’t allow that. Imagine if what he said was said by an NDC member, the person would have been arrested by now,” he added.

As tensions rise over NAPO’s comments, the NDC is calling for swift action by law enforcement to address the allegations and ensure fairness in political discourse.

Our meeting with you will be aired live and colored – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has insisted to livestream its forthcoming meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the 2024 provisional voters register, despite the EC’s refusal to allow the broadcast.

The NDC first requested a meeting with the EC on August 27 to discuss alleged inconsistencies in the voter register.

On September 5, they followed up with a request to have the meeting, scheduled for September 6, streamed live. The EC, however, declined this request.

The NDC’s Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, took to Facebook to confirm that party representatives will ensure the meeting is streamed live to promote transparency.

Dr. Boamah also issued a warning to the EC against any attempts to manipulate the election in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating such actions would be unacceptable. He further criticized the NPP for its “LOUD SILENCE” regarding the reported issues with the provisional voters register.

Below is Dr. Omane Boamah’s full post

This deliberate refusal flies in the face of Transparency: Transparency is cardinal to the attainment of Free, Fair and Peaceful elections.

The EC can not escape public scrutiny and forensic audit of the voters register!

Meanwhile, we’ve all observed the LOUD SILENCE of the ruling NPP notwithstanding all these anomalies.

This comes in response to social media reports suggesting that Basintale had been declared wanted by the authorities.

In a statement released on Thursday, the police firmly stated, “We wish to categorically state that the claim is false.”

Election 2024: Mahama promises to establish tractor stations in all farming communities

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to establish tractor stations in farming communities across Ghana if elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.

According to Mahama, these tractor stations will provide farmers with easier access to mechanized farming equipment and other vital resources, alleviating the challenges they face in acquiring necessary tools to enhance their agricultural activities.

He made this commitment during a campaign stop at Kwame Danso, located in the Sene West District of the Bono East Region, where he addressed a crowd of supporters and local farmers as part of his 2024 campaign tour.

“When the NDC comes to power, all farming communities will receive their share of tractor stations.

Sene West will have its own centre, equipped with 10 tractors, and everything you need to make farming easier will be available for you to access.

“Farmers will need to form cooperatives and register their names, after which their farmlands will be measured to determine what each has.

Once registered, you can go to the tractor stations and receive the assistance you need.”

EC rejects NDC’s request for live broadcast of voter register findings

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has declined the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) request for a live broadcast of its upcoming meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC) to discuss findings from the Provisional Voters Register (PVR).

The Commission explained that the discrepancies including missing names, misplaced voters, and duplicate images, which have been sighted by both parties are not new, hence there is no need for a broadcast.

“The Commission does not accept the proposal of a live broadcast of this meeting. Our team is ready to meet with your team on the agreed time,” the EC’s statement read in part.

The meeting, scheduled for today, September 6, 2024, aims to address NDC’s findings from the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) ahead of the December 7 general elections.

NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, in a letter to the EC, emphasized that broadcasting the session would ensure transparency.

The request follows concerns about missing names in the register, which the NDC claims undermines the integrity of the electoral process.

The party highlighted these issues after analysing discrepancies between the PVR and the registers exhibited at polling stations.

The NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, has been critical of the EC’s reliability, calling for an external audit and a public apology. He accused the EC of presenting a “bloated” register, warning that it could affect the election’s credibility.

The EC has acknowledged errors in the register, particularly in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency, attributing the mistake to the unintentional inclusion of voter transfer lists from previous years.

The NDC, however, has accused the EC of inflating the register in collaboration with the ruling NPP, alleging that over 3,000 voters had been improperly added.

NDC demands live broadcast of voter register engagement with EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for a live broadcast of its forthcoming meeting with the Electoral Commission (EC) .

The upcoming engagement which is slated for today Friday, 6th September 2024 will address findings from the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) ahead of the December 7 general elections.

In a formal letter to the EC, the NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey emphasized that televising the session would ensure full transparency.

The request follows concerns raised over the omission of names in the voters register, with many questioning the integrity of the process.

On August 27, the NDC formally requested the meeting after uncovering major discrepancies during the voter exhibition period.

The party’s analysis of the PVR, compared with registers exhibited at polling stations, revealed irregularities that have alarmed various stakeholders.

These concerns were highlighted throughout the exhibition period from August 20 to 27, during which the NDC and other groups called attention to the issues with the register.

“I bring you greetings from the NDC Party Headquarters, Accra and trust that this letter finds you well. In connection with the upcoming meeting with your team slated for Friday, 6th September 2024, we request for a live broadcast of our presentation of observations found in the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) to your team. This, we believe, will give true meaning to transparency as found in your motto,” portions of the statement read.

The NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, had criticized the EC’s reliability and called for an external audit, reiterating the demand for a public apology.

Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer also demanded that the EC publicly apologize to Ghanaians, accusing it of issuing a “bloated” voter register.

According to him, the inaccuracies could jeopardize the upcoming elections’ integrity and disenfranchise eligible voters.

At a press conference in Accra on Monday, the EC admitted to the error, acknowledging the inflated register in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency.

The Commission attributed the issue to the unintentional inclusion of voter transfer lists from 2020 and 2023.

Previously, the NDC alleged that the EC, in collusion with the ruling NPP, had inflated the register by over 3,000 voters.

NPP, NDC members clash at Bommoden over DRIP initiative, 1 injured

An intense clash between supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) erupted in the town of Bommoden, located in the Krachi West district of the Oti Region, on September 2, 2024.

The confrontation was sparked by a dispute over who should lead the deployment of DRIP (District Road Improvement Programme) machines intended to enhance road connections to the Krachi West District Assembly.

The altercation left one person injured, who was subsequently admitted to Dr. Bawuah Clinic in Kete Krachi for treatment.

The DRIP initiative, officially launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo on July 31, 2024, at Independence Square, aims to tackle the pressing issue of deteriorating road conditions across Ghana’s 275 constituencies. The program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, is a critical step toward making unpaved roads motorable and reducing bureaucratic delays in road maintenance. The National Security Ministry has underscored the deteriorating road conditions as a significant national security concern.

In the wake of the DRIP launch, tensions have risen as political factions vie for control over the deployment of the road improvement machinery. The scuffle in Bommoden is a direct result of these tensions, highlighting the fierce competition between NPP and NDC supporters in the region.

Adding to the controversy, the Minority in Parliament, consisting of NDC Members of Parliament, has submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request to the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF). The request, signed by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, seeks comprehensive details about the equipment allocated for DRIP, including the specifications, payment schedule, total payments made so far, and the overall cost of the program.

In the letter, the NDC MPs stated, “Pursuant to section 18 of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), I write on the instructions of Honourable Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament, to request for the following information.”

The letter further specified, “The cost at which each unit of the equipment meant for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) launched on Wednesday 31st July, 2024 has been procured.”

Mahama blames drought in Northern Region to the NPP govt

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has attributed the country’s recent lack of rainfall to the poor governance of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite the government’s efforts to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the drought, Mahama sympathized with farmers who are experiencing significant losses due to the dry conditions.

He also noted that the drought has contributed to rising food prices, further straining the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

Mahama made these remarks during a visit to the Babatokuma Market in Kintampo North as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Bono East Region, where he engaged with traders and listened to their concerns.

“We know that when you’re running a country, the most important thing is that the people can afford food. Today, food is very expensive.

The rains have not been coming this year because of the NPP government, which has damaged many of our crops.

“This is why the next NDC government will introduce the Farmers Service Sector in each district and give them ten tractors each,” Mr. Mahama pledged.

In response to an impending food crisis, the government has implemented measures to alleviate the situation.

Last week, the Ministry of Agriculture introduced a ban on the export of certain food products, including maize, soybeans, and other grains, in an effort to stabilise domestic supply and prevent shortages.

EC owes Ghanaians an apology for voter register errors – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded that the Electoral Commission (EC) publicly apologize to Ghanaians, accusing it of issuing a “bloated” voter register.

The NDC believes the inaccuracies could jeopardize the upcoming elections’ integrity and disenfranchise eligible voters.

At a press conference in Accra on Monday, the EC admitted to the error, acknowledging the inflated register in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency. The Commission attributed the issue to an unintentional inclusion of voter transfer lists from 2020 and 2023.

Previously, the NDC had alleged that the EC, in collusion with the ruling NPP, inflated the register by over 3,000 voters.

In response, Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC, explained the error.

Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, criticized the EC’s reliability and called for an external audit, while reiterating the demand for a public apology.

  • Final voter register will be credible after amending errors – EC

Final voter register will be credible after amending errors – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public that the final voters’ register for the 2024 elections will be both robust and credible, following the correction of errors identified during the recent exhibition exercise.

Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, provided this assurance during a press briefing on Monday, September 2.

Dr. Asare explained that the provisional voter register, which was prepared for the exhibition and shared with political parties, included a “transfers voters list” and an “absent voters list” for each polling station.

The transfers list comprises voters who have been transferred out of a particular polling station, while the absent voters list includes those who have transferred their votes and those participating in special voting.

However, during the preparation for the 2024 exhibition, a technical issue caused the inclusion of all transfers made since 2020, leading to a higher-than-expected number of absent and transferred voters. Dr. Asare emphasized that the EC has now corrected this anomaly and will distribute the amended transfer and absent voters lists to the political parties.

This clarification from the EC comes in response to allegations from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency of the Central Region.

The NDC accused the EC of unlawfully inflating the voters’ register in collaboration with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to Galahad Alex Andoh, the NDC’s Communications Officer in the constituency, over 3,000 names were allegedly added to the voters’ register without authorization.

Mr Andoh further stated that the NDC would resist any attempts by the EC to manipulate the upcoming elections and would take necessary actions to prevent electoral fraud. The EC, however, has stood by the integrity of the voter register, reiterating its commitment to delivering a credible and accurate final list.

The EC released the provisional voter register to political parties on August 19, following demands for timely access for review. Since then, the NDC has raised concerns about discrepancies in the document, including missing names and incorrect placements of qualified voters. The party has requested an emergency meeting with the EC to address these issues.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, has also urged the EC to rectify any inaccuracies in the voter register to avoid confusion during the elections. The EC has responded by affirming that all necessary corrections will be made, ensuring that the final voter register reflects the true will of the electorate.

NPP’s Vincent Odotei to run independent

A former MP for the La Dade Kotopon Constituency, Vincent Sowah Odotei, has announced his decision to run as an independent candidate for the upcoming elections.

Known as Obama, Mr Odotei previously served as Deputy Minister of Communication and represented La from 2017 to 2020 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) banner.

He has stated that he has unfinished business in the Constituency that he intends to complete.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Odotei confirmed his plans and mentioned that he would soon share his vision for the Constituency. He explained that his return aims to complete the development projects he started during his previous term and to advocate for the interests of La’s residents in the ninth Parliament.

    Background

After losing the NPP primaries for the La seat in the 2020 General Election, Mr Odotei faced calls for his expulsion from the party by some NPP supporters in the Constituency. They accused him of allegedly collaborating with the NDC Parliamentary Candidate to secure a win for the NDC in the 2020 elections.

Although Odotei denied these accusations and expressed his willingness to be investigated by the party, he eventually parted ways with the NPP and ran as an independent candidate in 2020.

As the 2024 election approaches, Odotei will face tough competition from the incumbent NDC MP, Rita Odoley Sowah, and Joseph Addo, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s driver, who won the NPP primary in April.

I never called Mahama a drunkard – Atta Akyea

Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta Akyea, has clarified that his recent comments were solely intended to highlight the credentials of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, not to label NDC flagbearer John Mahama as a drunkard.

This statement comes after accusations surfaced that he referred to Mahama as an alcoholic during a mini-rally on August 27, 2024. Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Nana Tuffour Boateng, Atta Akyea addressed the issue and clarified his remarks.

“I wanted to say that when we are having a crisis as a nation and it is economic in nature then God has helped us [because] we have a Moses who is an expert in economics. So Ghana is going to have for the first time an economist as a president to solve the economic problems that we are complaining about.”

“He is not only an economist. He is a very decent man…I also respect his discipline he is not only an economist but he doesn’t drink alcohol. This is all that I said,” he explained.

I promise to address unresolved investor debts if elected – Mahama

The NDC’s Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to tackle unresolved financial obligations to investors should he assume power.

Acknowledging the damage caused to investor confidence by these unfulfilled commitments, Mahama assured that his administration would uphold the sanctity of contracts.

At the Foreign Direct Investment series held in Accra, Mahama highlighted his vision for advancing Ghana’s economy through transformative policies.

“A new NDC government shall respect the sanctity of contracts, and I am sure many of you are waiting to hear this, properly executed [contracts] that deliver value to the people of Ghana and to the investor.

“Several investors have complained about the lack of commitment on the part of the government to honour outstanding financial commitments in respect of goods and services that have been provided.

“I have taken notice of this important issue and I want to assure all those in that situation currently that we will take an inventory of all that and our government shall urgently work to resolve all these payment issues through a system that will be transparent and timely, just as happened when I was president.”

NDC to introduce weighing systems for farmers, traders to promote fair trade

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to introduce a weights and measurements system to promote fairness for both consumers and sellers in Ghana.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party’s Chairman, stated that this measure aims to ensure consumers get precise quantities of goods, while farmers and sellers receive equitable payment.

During a visit to Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, he noted that similar systems are successfully used in neighboring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, where they help prevent fraud between farmers and traders.

If former President Mahama is elected in 2025, the plan includes providing weighing scales to markets nationwide to ensure accurate measurements and fair market prices.

Nketia clarified that this initiative is not about controlling prices but about ensuring fair trade practices.

Since Monday, Mr. Asiedu Nketia has been actively campaigning for the NDC in the Eastern region.

  • Atta Akyea won’t apologize for calling Mahama a “drunkard” – NPP to NDC

Atta Akyea won’t apologize for calling Mahama a “drunkard” – NPP to NDC

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rallied behind Samuel Atta Akyea, the MP for Abuakwa South, after his contentious comments about former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Akyea had labeled Mahama a “drunkard,” sparking demands for an apology from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a statement released on August 30, 2024, the NPP Youth Wing, led by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, made it clear that they will not issue an apology.

The statement condemned the NDC for what it sees as hypocrisy, pointing out that NDC officials such as General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey and National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah had previously made disparaging remarks about NPP members without facing similar backlash.

The NPP Youth Wing noted that the term “drunkard” was first used against Mahama by Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a notable NDC figure, during the party’s presidential primaries.

They argued that Duffour’s comments about Mahama’s alleged drinking problem have never been retracted, which they believe justifies Atta Akyea’s comments.

The Youth Wing affirmed its commitment to defending their presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, from NDC attacks and warned of a “fire for fire” response. They called for a more respectful and fair political dialogue.

Bawumia is a blessing, we can’t lose him – Ocquaye to Ghanaians

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof Aaron Mike Oquaye, has urged Ghanaians to recognize and embrace the unique contributions of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will bring on board should he assumes presidency.

He emphasized that not supporting Dr. Bawumia would be akin to rejecting a blessing.

Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s impact in Ghana’s political history, particularly his pivotal role in the 2012 election petition, Oquaye Snr. highlighted how this case brought significant attention to the importance of pink sheets in the electoral process.

“When there were controversies about election matters and we had gathered a lot of information, Frank Davies and others had toiled. But how to put it together into an accepted formula for court, that work was done by Dr. Bawumia. Today, he has one more name called ‘Mr. Pink Sheet’.

“All matters regarding how we use pink sheets to address the controversies of elections, that was the man who stood in court. You and I were not there, but you could see the star in him. I say it is a gift. If you do not take advantage of such a gift, then you do not want the good things in life. You hate the blessings of God,” he said.

  • Delete all names registered secretly in voters’ register – NDC tells Ajumako Enyan Essiam EC

Delete all names registered secretly in voters’ register – NDC tells Ajumako Enyan Essiam EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency of the Central Region, to delete names of 3,017 non-resident it had secretly added to the constituency’s voter list.

During a press briefing, Prof. Jonathan Annan, Chairman of the NDC in Ajumako Enyan Essiam, pointed out that there were inconsistencies between the voter data provided by the EC and the NDC’s records.

He claimed that 3,868 voters originally from Ajumako Enyan Essiam had been relocated to another constituency, and that 829 names were missing from the voter list.

Prof. Annan accused the EC, with support from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), of trying to influence the upcoming elections in the constituency.

“The NDC in Ajumako Enyan Essiam is demanding that the Electoral Commission immediately delete all names registered secretly in the voters’ register,” he stated.

The NDC has issued a five-day deadline for the EC to remove the so-called “foreign names” from the voter list or face protests.

In media interviews, some NDC members voiced their resolve to oppose any efforts by the EC and the NPP to sway the election results.

They pledged to defend the integrity of the voting process and warned those allegedly responsible for the secret transfers to correct the issue or face repercussions.

“We are focused on winning the upcoming December General Elections with Ato Forson and John Dramani Mahama,” they added.
