29-year-old man fatally stabbed inside nightclub Colliseum

An investigation into the murder of a 29-year-old man who was stabbed to death inside a nightclub is now ongoing.

Just after 5 a.m. today, the incident happened at Valesha’s nightclub in Walsall, which is also known as Colliseum locally.

Police suspect there was a fight inside the club.

Following the incident, the victim was taken to the hospital, where he or she passed away at 6 am, according to West Midlands Police.

There have not yet been any arrests.

“The events this morning are devastating and disturbing. A man has regrettably lost his life, and we’ll be providing as much help as we can to his family during this extremely upsetting time,” said Detective Inspector Ade George.

‘Our priority is catching those responsible.

‘While we’ve spoken to a number of people who were inside the club at the time, we still need to hear from anyone who was there and who saw, or may have filmed, what happened.’

A man who was at the club witnessed an argument between at least two people which escalated into violence.

He described scenes of ‘pandemonium’ as people tried to escape the club.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: ‘There was a scuffle or fight in the club. I’ve gone out the front and the guy has got blood on his face. The guy was lying in the doorway.

‘An argument started between a couple of people. The next minute there was a bit of a scuffle. The bouncers were on it. It looked like they were fighting.

‘Lots of people were everywhere, near the cloakroom where the guy was lying on the floor. There was shouting, screaming, crying. I saw blood. Then the paramedics arrived.’

The area around Newport Street remains closed and cordoned off by police this afternoon.

A police spokesperson said: ‘We understand the concerns around recent knife crime in Walsall town centre, and neighbourhood officers will be patrolling the area over the coming days to offer reassurance.’

Police and staff helped clear the club as an investigation into what happened was launched.

An estimated 150 people were inside Colliseum at the time.

Owner Valesha Anderson said: ‘I was upstairs at the time so didn’t see anything. I’m really sad to see what’s happened. I only opened in October.

‘I wanted to make it a fun place where people could have a drink and celebrate with their friends and now this has happened. It’s a shame for it to be ruined.’

The violence comes just weeks after Bailey Atkinson, 20, was killed on High Street in Walsall town centre.

The club is expected to remain closed for the foreseeable future.

  • Alleged killing of 23-year-old man by police causing tension in Wa

Alleged killing of 23-year-old man by police causing tension in Wa

There is chaos in Wa Municipality in the Upper West Region as a result of an alleged killing of a young man in his early 20s by the Police.

Abubakar Shaahid from Dondoli, a suburb in the municipality was reportedly shot and killed by the Police around 8:pm Wednesday, March 8, 2023, on suspicion of being part of a robbery gang terrorising residents.

His family members have however refuted the claims by the Police describing Shaahid as a good boy with no history of criminal act.

Calling for justice for their ward, they have vowed to implore all legitimate means to clear his name from the allegations by the Police anti-robbery taskforce.

According to the spokesperson of the family, Muhammed Tamim, the deceased was on his way to meet a family friend at Tanbileju between 7-8:pm last Wednesday night.

He said on his way there, the friend called to inform the deceased to return home since he had heard gunshots in the suburb. But by that time, according to Tamim, the deceased had already been shot and therefore informed the friend that he was shot by the Police.

Muhammed Tamim said that when they went to the police, the officers said they stopped the deceased on his motorbike but that he immidiately alighted from the motorbike and started running away.

According to him, the police labeled the deceased as a suspect from a robbery gang.

Abubakar Tamim narrated that: “Last night at about 7-8:pm, I had a call from a man at Tanbileju who we call Maalam Umar. He’s our family friend and Shaahid (the deceased) usually visited the man to help him with his work. The man is there (at Tanbileju) but has a room in town so the deceased usually ferries him to town (to pass the night). So he was as usual on his way to go and take the man when he was shot dead by the Police. So how do I get to know he was shot by the Police?”

“The man (Maalam Umar) called to tell me that the deceased was coming to take him but because he, Maalam Umar, was hearing gunshots in the area he called to tell the deceased not to come anymore due to the gunshots, only for the deceased to inform the Maalam that he had already been hit by a bullet. So I tried calling Shaahid, the deceased, but he couldn’t answer the call. So I called the Assembly Member of the area to make enquiries about the issue. He told me he saw some officers at a checkpoint around the area but they denied involvement in the operations but mentioned the anti-robbery taskforce and asked him to go to the CID office. According to their narration, the Police said that they stopped the deceased who was riding a motorbike but that after stopping, he abandoned the bike and started running away. But for me, I said how can you stop a person, he stops and then leaves his motorbike and starts running away? And then you shot his stomach. When somebody is running away from you, is it not his back that you can shoot, but not his stomach?”

According to the spokesperson, the family wants justice for their loved one to clear his name who they say had no criminality record at all as being purported by the Police.

The family wants independent investigations into the case to bring out the truth and allow the law to take its cause.

Attempts to get official response from the police have proven difficult as no officer was prepared to go on record even though they are aware of the case except pledging to journalists to release a statement which is yet to come to the fore over 72hours after the incident occurred.

However, very reliable sources in the service who spoke to GhanaWeb on condition of anonymity confirmed the young man was indeed gunned down by their officers but insisted he was an armed robber.

The body of the deceased has since been buried after it was released to the family on Friday, March 10.

Police share detailed account of how soldier was killed at Ashaiman

The Ghana Police Service has provided details on the circumstances surrounding the death of young trooper Imoro Sherrif on March 4 and the results of their initial investigations, which included the arrest of six suspects who will appear in court on Monday. Read the full police report below.

The Police after a week of sustained intelligence-led operations, have arrested six persons at different dates and various locations within Ashiaman and its environs for their suspected involvement in the murder of Imoro Sherrif, a soldier.

On March 4, Police received information that a male adult had been found lying dead at Ashiaman Taifa in the Greater Accra Region.

A team of Police officers proceeded to the said location and confirmed the incident.

Police immediately commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the victim. The officers cordoned off the scene and called in the specialist Police Crime Scene team to process the scene for forensic analysis.

The Crime Scene Team retrieved a number of items, including a knife with blood stains on it and a backpack. In the backpack, Police found a Samsung tablet, an Apple laptop, a military uniform with the name tag “Imoro”, eight other items of clothing, as well as a Ghana card and a Health Insurance card bearing the name Imoro Sherrif.

Judging from the contents of the backpack, the police suspected the victim could be a soldier, and in line with Police standard operating procedure for handling institution-based victims, the Military was accordingly notified of the incident and some military personnel came to identify the deceased to Police as Imoro Sheriff, a soldier.

The body of the deceased was thereafter conveyed to a hospital for preservation and autopsy.

As part of the investigation, an intelligence-led operation was immediately launched within Ashiaman and other strategic locations of interest to follow up on all relevant leads on the case.

On the same day, consistent with Ghanaian tradition and as part of the investigation process, a team of police officers after identifying the residence of the parents of the deceased, visited them, commiserated with them and assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter.

During the visit, the parents informed the Police that the deceased was stationed at Sunyani but had come to Accra on a course.

Investigations further revealed that on March 3, the deceased had visited a female friend at Ashaiman Newtown at about 10:30 pm and left the place in the middle of the night at about 01:30 am, on March 4.

After almost a week of painstaking intelligence-led operations, on March 9, the police arrested suspects Safianu Musah alias Dayorgu and Ibrahim Abdul Rakib at their hideouts in Ashaiman.

Two other suspects, Samuel Tetteh alias Wiper and Abubakar Sadick alias Birdman were also arrested at their hideouts on March 10.

Two additional suspects, Yussif Mohammed and Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim were arrested on 11th and March 12, respectively.

Further investigation has established that suspects Samuel Tetteh and Abubakar Sadick at about 1:45 am on 4th March 2023 attacked the deceased at Taifa Ashiaman in an attempt to rob him of his phone and a backpack.

The deceased, however, resisted and struggled with the suspects. During the struggle, suspect Samuel Tetteh pulled out a knife and stabbed the deceased in the arm, snatched his phone and bolted leaving the deceased with the knife stuck in his arm.

A postmortem examination was performed on the deceased’s body on March 8, after which the pathologist gave the verbal cause of death as exsanguination and laceration of major vessels of the left arm consistent with the stabbed injury.

Investigations also revealed that suspects Samuel Tetteh and Abubakar Sadick sold the phone which they had robbed from the deceased to suspect Ibrahim Abdul Rakib who later sold it to suspect Safianu Musah.

Suspect Safianu Musah is being evasive as to the whereabouts of the phone and claims to have sold it to suspect Yussif Mohammed and later to suspect Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim.

Both suspects have been arrested and are assisting in the investigation to recover the phone.

On March 12, a team of police officers led by the Tema Regional Police Commander visited the family of the deceased and briefed them on the investigations done so far.

We wish to commend all police officers at all levels of Command, especially the crack police intelligence and investigation teams as well as the Ashiaman District Police Command for their professionalism and meticulous dedication, working around the clock to unravel this case.

We would like to assure the public, especially the family of the deceased, that all the suspects are in Police custody and will be put before the court on Monday, March 13, for justice.

  • Police arrest key suspects in the murder of soldier in Ashaiman

Police arrest key suspects in the murder of soldier in Ashaiman

The Police Administration says it has arrested key suspects in the murder of Sheriff Imoro, a soldier at Ashaiman.

In a release on Friday, the Police noted that the suspects were arrested through a sustained intelligence-led operation.

“The Police after a week of sustained intelligence-led operation have arrested the key suspects involved in the murder of Imoro Sherrif, the soldier who was found dead at Taifa Ashiaman on 4th March, 2023,” the release stated.

It would be recalled that on Saturday, March 4, 2023, a young soldier was murdered at Ashaiman Taifa.

His death however angered the military for which reason in the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, some military personnel invaded Ashaiman and brutalised some residents in a search for the murderers of their colleague.

They also took some of the residents away for interrogation. Most of them have since been released as of Friday.

The MP for the area then condemned the act by the military men.

According to him, although the killing of the soldier was a dastardly act, “we cannot take the laws into our hands whether we are lawmakers or security agencies.”

However, the Ghana Armed Forces says the operation was merely a swoop in a man-hunt for some criminals and not for vengeance.

According to GAF, “the military operation, which was sanctioned by the Military High Command, was NOT to avenge the killing of the soldier but rather to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.”

They added that their “swoop” had led to the arrest of about 184 suspects aged between 21 and 47 years old and they have since handed them over to the military police who will subsequently send them over to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.

In a related development, the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul has described the incident as regrettable.

According to him, in shaping a nation, it is always difficult to ensure that there is absolute peace due to the inevitability of such unfortunate incidents as happened in Ashaiman.

Meanwhile, he has asserted that the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament together with the Ministry of Defense and the Military High Command will pay a visit to the Ashaiman community on Thursday, March 16.

Sixth passenger dropped off prior to Cardiff crash describes his final moments to police

The final moments spent with his five friends before a car accident in Cardiff, Wales, that left three people dead and two others injured have been made public by a sixth passenger.

Last Saturday’s A48(M) collision near the St Mellons region of Cardiff claimed the lives of Eve Smith, Darcy Ross, and Rafel Jeanne, all of whom were 21 years old.

Shane Loughlin, 32, and Sophie Russon, 20 respectively, are currently battling for their life at the University Hospital of Wales in the nation’s capital.

The group of friends had been enjoying a night out at the Mufflet nightclub in Newport when their car crashed into a woodland in the early hours.

Police have been using CCTV and number plate recognition cameras to understand what happened, believing just their car was involved.

But also aboard the white Volkswagen Tiguan was Joel Lia, 27, who was dropped off only hours before the incident.

Police had been reportedly searching for the sixth rider but Joel is now ‘fully cooperating’ with the force, a source has said.

The insider said: ‘He has been cooperating fully with the officers in the case and is understandably very upset by the events of that night.’

Joel left the car at around 2am in nearby Pentwyn, around two miles from the tragedy.

Police understand that he was with Rafel and Shane as they met up with Eve, Darcy and Sophie in the social club.

Police had been searching for a sixth rider aboard the car.

Rafel was a ‘very close friend’ of Joel and had gone out together the night before.

They all then hopped into their Volkswagen and drove around 38 miles to Porthcawl where Shane had a caravan in the Trecco Bay camp.

An alleged noise complaint was registered in the area but police do not believe it ‘played any major part’ in the incident.

Joel asked his friends to give him a lift to his home before they filled up their tank and headed to Newport to drop the three women home.

It would take 46 hours for the five to be discovered in their overturned car.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hoborough of Gwent Police said: ‘This is an extremely sad situation, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of each of the young people involved.

His visit also served as a preliminary handing over preparations and site tour ahead of the official handing over of the police apartments under construction at Kwabenya (Atomic) a suburb of Accra.

At a recently held news conference by the Lands Ministry, Sector Minister, Samuel A. Police detain and transport Greta Thunberg

Police in Norway detained environmental activist Greta Thunberg during a demonstration for indigenous rights.

After her appearance at a march in Germany in January against the construction of a coal mine, the Swedish activist has been photographed being dragged away by police twice in the past two months.

Following today’s protest in Oslo, Greta and the other participants were briefly detained before being released. She was holding a red, blue, yellow, and green Sámi flag.

The demonstrators were calling for the removal of wind turbines from reindeer pastures on land belonging to the Sámi, an indigenous group living in central and northern Norway, Sweden and Finland, as well as parts of Russia.

Supporters say the transition to green energy should not come at the expense of Sámi rights.

In 2021, Norway’s supreme court ruled that two wind farms at Fosen, near Trondheim, violated the indigenous people’s rights under international conventions.

However, the turbines remain in operation 16 months later.

Reindeer herders say the sight and sound of the giant machinery frighten their animals.

In recent days, Greta joined protestors blocking access to some government buildings.

The increased focus on the issue led the energy minister Terje Aasland decided to call off an official visit to the UK.

In an interview with Reuters yesterday, Greta said: ‘Indigenous rights, human rights, must go hand-in-hand with climate protection and climate action.

‘That can’t happen at the expense of some people. Then it is not climate justice.’

The images of the 20-year-old being lifted by police echoed January’s protest at Luetzerath, near Dusseldorf.

Demonstrators gathered at the abandoned German village to try and prevent the expansion of the Garzweiler coal mine by energy company RWE.

2023 Elections: Lawmaker-elect in Kano arrested by Police

The Kano Police command has confirmed the arrest of Sani Madakin Gini, who was elected under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, for unlawful possession of firearms.

The arrest was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kano Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who stated that the lawmaker is under investigation.

The Kano State Police, through the PPRO, said, “We can confirm that Honourable Sani Madakin Gini has been arrested for unlawful possession of firearms.” “He is currently in our custody and undergoing investigation.”

He added that the police would not relent to ensure that the law is upheld and that everyone, irrespective of their status or position, is held accountable for their actions.

Although some citizens have expressed shock over the incident, others have called on the authorities to ensure justice is served and that anyone found guilty is brought to book.

Recall that Nigerian Tribune reported that a Kano Magistrate Court on Wednesday ordered the House of Representatives Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, to be remanded at Goron-Dutse correctional centre pending his bail application.

  • Thai heroin dealer used plastic surgery to pose as a “Korean man – Police

Thai heroin dealer used plastic surgery to pose as a “Korean man – Police

The refuge of a suspected drug smuggler who had been on the run for months was a condo in the Bangkok suburbs that was the target of a Thai investigative police raid last Thursday.

Jimin Seong, a “excellent looking Korean man,” with wavy hair and nice skin, was described to police as the man.

    But, appearances aren’t always accurate.

Police said in a news release on Friday that the suspect’s real name is Saharat Sawanjaeng.
Thai national and resident of Bangkok, the 25-year-old attempted to remake himself as a “Korean man” by altering his name, haircut, and going through several plastic surgery treatments “until his face had entirely transformed,” according to the announcement.

Before and after photos provided by the police show a dramatically different look, with earlier photos bearing little immediate resemblance to the man pictured afterward.

Sawanjaeng has been wanted since last year for allegedly importing more than 2,500 grams and 290 tablets of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or molly, into Thailand. He is allegedly a major source of the drug spreading in Bangkok and the capital city’s surrounding area, said the release.

However, he had seemingly vanished – until police received rumors of the drugs being traced back to a Korean dealer, prompting their investigation.

After his arrest, Sawanjaeng allegedly confessed to having “worldwide connections,” sourcing drugs from the dark web and making transactions through Bitcoin, said the release.

He spoke “very little Korean,” but wanted to live in South Korea because he was “bored” of life in Thailand, he reportedly told police.

Photos of the raid show Sawanjaeng surrounded by police in the apartment before being led away with his hands restrained. He is being charged with importing and illegally distributing a category 1 drug into Thailand – both offenses carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

His actions “impacted national security and the general public’s safety” by causing the drug to become “widespread in public,” the release added.

Like most of Southeast Asia, Thailand has traditionally had strict laws against drug use and trafficking – but it has taken several steps in relaxing rules in recent years.

One major legal amendment in 2017 changed the maximum punishment for selling drugs from the death penalty to life imprisonment. A more sweeping set of amendments came in 2021 to emphasize prevention and treatment over punishment for small-scale drug users.

Most notably, Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis last year, with cannabis cafes and smoke shops quickly popping up across the country.

Man dies as a car slams through fences and plunges into a river

In Bristol, a car crashed through railings and into a river, killing a guy in his 20s.

At before 1.30 am on Saturday, Avon and Somerset Police were summoned to York Road in the city’s Bedminster neighbourhood.

According to the police, a car carrying three occupants drove through fences and into the River Avon.

One man, according to a spokesman, passed away, while the other two had minor injuries treatment.

‘We responded to an incident in the early hours of this morning, Saturday February 25, after a car went through railings alongside the river at York Road, Bedminster, and entered the water,’ she said.

‘There were three occupants in the car. One of them, a man in his 20s, sadly died. The next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

‘The family will be offered support by a specially trained liaison officer.

‘The two other occupants have received medical attention.’

Roads in the surrounding area were closed while emergency services attended the incident.

The spokeswoman continued: ‘An investigation is ongoing to ascertain how the vehicle came to be in the water.

‘We are making a mandatory referral about this incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).’

The police statement did not specify the reason behind the referral to the IOPC.

Police forces must refer certain incidents to the watchdog, for example where there has been a death or a serious injury following police contact.

In 2018, a man and a woman were rescued after the car they were travelling in crashed through railings on York Road.

And in 2019, a van driver and passenger managed to escape after their vehicle went through the railings

  • Gang “hits the street of UK with” brandishing samurai swords and machetes

Gang “hits the street of UK with” brandishing samurai swords and machetes

A bunch of people carrying machetes and samurai swords surged through a town, leaving the residents in shock.

During a “public order incident” on Regents Street in Reading early this morning, the alarm was sounded.

About 3am, officers were alerted to a group of individuals carrying firearms, according to Thames Valley Police.

Machetes and samurai swords were among the armaments.

After the incident, Reading passed an order allowing further police authority.

Thames Valley Police said there were reports of up to eight people armed with samurai swords and machetes, as well as damage to vehicles.

No injuries have yet been reported.

In response, a Section 60 order has been put in place until 3.20am on Saturday.

The order, which police said is used when there is a risk of violence, allows officers to stop and search people suspected of being involved in violence, without the need to have reasonable grounds.

Inspector Tom Day, based at Reading police station, said: ‘We have put this order in place while we carry out our investigation into this large public order incident.

‘The order will give our officers extra powers to carry out stop and search activity, and has been enacted for the safety of the public.

‘I understand that an order of this nature could cause concern, but while it may sound alarming, enhancing our stop and search powers provides us with another tactic to quickly identify and disrupt those carrying weapons.

‘If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

‘You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual.

‘Officers who are out and about are there to reassure you as well as using their powers under Section 60 so please do stop and speak with them about any concerns that you have.’

We are genuinely concerned about aristocrat and missing man – Police

Police have issued a fresh plea in search of an aristocrat’s daughter and her unborn child.

When their car broke down on the M61 on January 5, Constance Marten, 35, and her partner Mark Gordon, 48, have been living “off the grid.”

After reportedly purchasing camping supplies from an Argos in London, they are supposedly sleeping outside.

After doing his time for beating and raping a lady in her 20s in Florida when he was only 14, Gordon was deported.

A £10,000 reward is currently in place for information that might help find the missing pair and their new-born baby.

Her mother, Virginie de Selliers pledged to stand by Constance and her grandchild earlier this month, telling her: ‘You are not alone in this situation. We will support you in whatever way we can.’

While her father has urged police to investigate a Nigerian cult that he says ‘brainwashed’ her.

The vehicle that Constance Marten, 35, Mark Gordon, 48, and their newborn child were travelling in was found broken down near junction four (Farnworth, Bolton) of the M61 on Thursday, 5 January. Enquiries suggest that Constance had very recently given birth and neither she nor the baby have been assessed by medical professionals. There were subsequent sightings of the couple and the baby over the following days in Harwich and Colchester in Essex.

Police starts investigation into Nicola Bulley’s welfare visit

Investigators from the Independent Office for Police Conduct have started their inquiry.

A welfare check on Nicola Bulley was conducted a few days before she vanished, and now the police watchdog is looking into it.

On January 10, a Lancashire Police officer was summoned to the mother’s residence, which she shared with her husband and two daughters.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct probe is ‘in the early stages’, but will look into the contact that the force had with the mortgage advisor on this day.

A huge search was later launched when Nicola went missing on the morning of January 27.

Following a three-week hunt, her body was found on the banks of the River Wyre on Sunday.

Mid-way through the search, Lancashire Police revealed a welfare check had been made after ‘some significant issues with alcohol which were brought on by Nicola’s ongoing struggles with the menopause’ resurfaced.

Critics blasted them for releasing personal details, warning it may encourage victim blaming.

Tyre Nichols killing: Ex-US police officers plead not guilty

In Memphis, a 29-year-old black motorist was beaten to death, and five former officers are accused of second-degree murder.

Tyre Nichols was killed after a violent traffic stop in Memphis, which sparked protests and renewed calls for an end to police violence. In his death, five former US police officers have entered not guilty pleas.

On Friday, before a judge in Shelby County Criminal Court, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III, and Justin Smith made their first court appearances with their attorneys.

In relation to the videotaped arrest of Nichols on January 7, the former officers entered not guilty pleas to charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.

The footage shows the officers beating the 29-year-old father and FedEx worker for three minutes in an assault that the Nichols family’s legal team likened to the 1991 police beating of Los Angeles motorist Rodney King, which was also videotaped.

“I am numb, just numb as I can be right now,” Nichols’s mother, RowVaughn Wells, said on Friday as she walked into the courtroom dressed in black.

After the court hearing, Wells dismissed the officers’ not-guilty plea, saying that it was expected.

“I’m going to leave it up to the district attorney’s office to get them prosecuted… and then they’ll find them guilty,” Wells told reporters outside the courtroom. “So, them saying they’re not guilty, that’s a preliminary thing. Everybody’s going to say that.”

She pledged to attend every session in court going forward.

“I want each and every one of those police officers to be able to look me in the face. They haven’t done that yet. They couldn’t even do that today. They didn’t even have the courage to look at me in my face after what they did to my son,” Wells said.

Nichols, who died in hospital three days after the traffic stop, attempted to converse with police as they shouted orders and threatened him with violence during the ordeal.

“You guys are really doing a lot right now. I’m just trying to go home,” he said at one point as he sat on the street and officers stood over him.

“Stop! I’m not doing anything,” Nichols said, just before breaking free and running.

When police caught up to him, he was beaten while being restrained, clubbed with a baton and kicked while on the ground. He cried out for his mother several times.

The five officers, all of whom are Black, have been fired from the police force, and the special unit they were members of has been disbanded. They were all released on bond as they await trial. Their next hearing has been scheduled for May 1.

“Be patient. Work with your attorneys,” Judge James Jones Jr said to the officers during Friday’s court appearance. “There may be some high emotions in this case.”

Nichols’s case has recalled the 2020 killing of George Floyd, who died when a police officer knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His death set off mass protests worldwide that demanded an end to racism and police brutality.

Memphis police said Nichols had been suspected of reckless driving, but no verified evidence of a traffic violation has emerged in public documents or in video footage.

The city’s police chief, Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, has said she has seen no evidence justifying the stop or the officers’ response. Davis also previously said the video footage of the fatal incident depicted “acts that defy humanity”.

One white officer who was also involved in the initial traffic stop has been fired while an additional officer who has not been identified has been suspended.

The Memphis case has stood out for the speed in which the officers were fired and charged.

On Friday, civil rights attorney Ben Crump – who is representing Nichols’ family – warned against “any unnecessary delays” in prosecuting the former officers. “It’s important that we move swiftly towards justice,” He told reporters.

COVID-19 expenditure to be probed in parliament February 15

According to the opposition leader in the legislature, the house’s investigation into COVID-19 expenditure is scheduled to begin on February 15, 2023.

According to Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the COVID-19 probe will be made public.

This was revealed by Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson when the leadership from both sides of the house met the press today, Wednesday, 8 February 2023, to outline some activities of the first meeting of the third session of parliament which began on Tuesday, 7 February 2023.

In March 2022, the minority had been pushing for a probe into COVID-19 expenditure.

It follows the viral circulation of an audiotape on social media in which a voice believed to be that of the Northern Regional Vice-Chairperson of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ms Felicia Tetteh, is heard talking about how COVID funds were disbursed to the leadership of the party and some candidates.

The then Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu told journalists at a press conference on Tuesday, 31 May 2022 that their persistent calls for a probe have been vindicated by the leaked audiotape.

The Tamale South MP said it “makes our call for an investigation of the highly anomalous COVID expenditures to be probed.”

He said the expenditure must be “probed by parliament or by the Auditor-General, or, President Akufo-Addo, [if he] has any respect for the tenets and values of accountability and transparency, [must] authorise a public enquiry into how the over GHS19 billion was disbursed and utilised.”

“We now understand how a motion to probe COVID by an institution, which should be the most fundamental institution and guardian of the public purse, Parliament, will dismiss the motion even at birth, by actors of the New Patriotic Party political administration.”

“He challenged the police that he is also in possession of a gun which escalated the tension and resulted in many warning shots released in the skies. As the police broke into the room, they saw the man dead lying beside his gun. We are still investigating the matter to know the actual root of the incident,” Mr Ntiri said.

Police say the matter is under investigation and will be receiving persons who are willing to help out with information on the said incident.

W/R: Police arrest 4 suspects over robbery and murder at Wassa Agona

Police have arrested four persons who allegedly attacked a filling station and murdered a security guard in the early hours of Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Wassa Agona in the Western Region.

The suspects, Francis Ebuka, Wisdom Justway, Samuel Chibuzor and Kingsly Okechuku alias Kofi Kingsly in the course of the robbery also subjected the fuel attendants to severe beatings.

They made away with an unspecified amount of money together with the filling station’s CCTV Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and mobile phones belonging to the victims.

Upon receiving information concerning the robbery attack, police patrol teams within the catchment area mobilized and proceeded to the scene and in the course of the operation arrested suspect Francis Ebuka, Wisdom Justway and Samuel Chibuzor who were fleeing the robbery scene on a motorbike.

A search conducted on them led to the recovery of a black hood, a handbag containing two mobile phones and an amount of Twenty Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Two Cedis (GH₵20,722.00).

The Police team further pursued the fourth suspect, Kingsly Okechuku to a hotel near Bogoso where an amount of Forty-Four Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Two Cedis (GH₵ 44,852.00), suspected to be part of their booty, was retrieved from him.

Tyre Nichols not seen to resist in police beating video

Five former Memphis police officers have been charged with murder following a traffic stop, and video of the incident shows them punching and kicking a driver for several minutes as he cries out for his mother.

Tyre Nichols, 29, is beaten by police in the videos from his arrest on January 7; there are no indications that he was resisting.

US Vice President Joe Biden described the “horrific” video as “deeply painful.”

Attorneys for Mr. Nichols’ family compared the assault to the 1991 beating by Los Angeles police of motorist Rodney King.

Peaceful protests took place in Memphis on Friday night after the video was released, with some demonstrators blocking a major highway in the city, while small-scale demonstrations were held elsewhere in the country.

Many protesters held banners demanding justice for Mr Nichols and an end to “police terror”.

This article contains descriptions of violence that some people may find distressing

Police initially said Mr Nichols had been stopped on suspicion of reckless driving, which has not been substantiated. He died in hospital three days later, on 10 January.

Mr Nichols was black, as are all five officers charged in the case.

Memphis Police Department released four graphic videos of the traffic stop and its violent aftermath on Friday, totalling more than an hour of footage.

    Mr Nichols taking a selfie
Image caption,Mr Nichols died three days after an encounter with police at a traffic stop

The first clip shows officers pulling Mr Nichols out of his vehicle and shouting at him to get on the ground.

“I didn’t do anything!” he says. Officers demand that he lie down flat.

“Get on the [expletive] ground!” one officer shouts, as another is heard saying: “Tase him!”

An officer shouts: “Put your hands behind your back before I break your [expletive].”

“You guys are really doing a lot right now,” Mr Nichols says to the officers. “I’m just trying to go home.”

Within seconds one of the officers fires a Taser at Mr Nichols, who leaps up and manages to run away.

A separate video, from a CCTV camera mounted on a utility pole, shows officers beating Mr Nichols after catching up with him in a residential area.

Two officers are seen holding Mr Nichols down while others take turns kicking and punching him and striking him with an expandable baton.

They drag him across the ground and prop him up against a squad car. More than 20 minutes elapse until an ambulance is seen arriving.

The third and fourth videos show police body camera footage of the beating, with Mr Nichols being held down, pepper-sprayed and assaulted as he repeatedly shouts: “Mom!”

The videos also show officers milling about recounting details of the incident as Mr Nichols lies slumped against the car.

Some of them claim Mr Nichols “swung” at them or reached for their guns, though neither allegation is clear from the released video.

Officers can also be heard saying that nothing was found in his car.

Mr Nichols’ mother, RowVaughn Wells, has said her son was only about 230ft (70m) from home when Memphis police officers “murdered him”.

Representatives of the family have described Mr Nichols as the father of a four-year-old son and a keen skateboarder who had recently enrolled in a photography class. He worked for the FedEx parcel delivery firm.

One of the lawyers, Antonio Romanucci, said: “This young man, by definition of the law in this state, was terrorised.”

The five officers – Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr, Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith – were fired last week.

They were taken into custody on Thursday and each faces charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

Four of the five posted bail and were released from custody by Friday morning, according to jail records.

Lawyers for Mr Martin and Mr Mills have said their clients will plead not guilty.

Memphis Police Director Cerelyn Davis described the five officers’ actions as “heinous, reckless and inhumane”.

With protests anticipated, she told US media that local officials had decided to release the video on Friday evening so that schoolchildren and commuters would have time to get home.

Dozens of protesters shut down a road bridge in the Memphis area on Friday night, while small-scale demonstrations were held in other US cities, including New York and Washington DC.

The protests around the country were largely peaceful, which Mr Nichols’ family had called for, saying they didn’t “want any type of disturbance”.

One protester at the Memphis rally, 21-year-old Kyrion, told the BBC he had dreamed as a child of joining the city’s police force, but now that dream was shattered.”It’s just wicked, the system is forever going to be wicked,” he said. “Which is why I’m out here today, as of right now I can’t count on [police] to protect me.

“How do I know the man is not going to put his knee into my neck, or hold me down and beat me into a pulp?”

After the videos were released, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said two of its deputies had also been relieved from duty pending an investigation into their conduct.

Japanese government hunts for person who faxed bomb threats to schools

Police in Japan are looking for the person who sent bomb and death threats to numerous schools, forcing hurried closures.

This week, the threats were faxed to colleges and high schools from a Tokyo-registered number.

Police say they have not discovered any explosives in school buildings, and there have been no reports of attacks on students or staff to date.

In Japan, which is renowned for having a low crime rate, bomb threats are uncommon.

The first wave of messages began on Monday, reaching schools and universities across the country. In one prefecture, Saitama, more than 170 schools received bomb threats, according to officials.

Local media reported that one message claimed that over 330 bombs had been set up, while another read: “I planted a major bomb.”

Some reports said the messages demanded ransoms ranging from 300,000 yen (£1,870; $2,320) to 3 million yen.

On Tuesday, messages threatening to kill students and teachers with homemade weapons were sent from the same number to high schools in various prefectures including Osaka, as well as Saitama and Ibaraki near Tokyo.

The threats saw many schools in Japan shutting down as a precaution, though most had re-opened by Thursday.

Fax machines are still commonly used in Japan.

Police start an investigation into the son’s and mother’s strange deaths

The Gomoa East District’s Millennium City Police Command has started an inquiry into the events that led to the deaths of a mother and son at Green Estate, a neighborhood of Nyame N’Adom.

The woman, who was between the ages of 48 and 50, and her son, Alexander Ofori, who is 28 years old, were discovered dead in their three-bedroom apartment last Saturday, January 7, after neighbors complained to the authorities about a foul odor coming from the home.

When the police arrived, they discovered that the two had passed away many days prior to their finding. Their bodies were nearly decayed.

Since then, the victims’ bodies have been placed at the mortuary.

A local who spoke with the media claimed that she last saw the mother, who ran a tavern in the neighborhood with her son, early on the morning of Tuesday, January 3.

James Amuah, the chairman of the Gomoa Nyame N’Adom Residents’ Group, told the media that the woman’s relative had alerted the association that she could not be reached despite several phone calls. She went back to the house that evening (January 6), but it was locked up, so she was unable to find her.

Police, Immigration refute claims of blame game over arrested terrorists

Allegations that the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Immigration Service were at odds over the whereabouts of roughly 48 accused terrorists have been rejected.

The publication was untrue and should be ignored, according to a statement jointly released and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, and Chief Superintendent of Immigration Micheal Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs.

“The attention of the Police Service and Immigration Service has been drawn to a publication by the Ghanaian Times Newspaper – on the front page and page 12 – of Thursday, January 5, 2023, which story has also since been carried by other media houses alleging that there is a blame game between the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service over the whereabouts of some 48 alleged terrorists.”

It said that unlike what the Ghanaian Times Newspaper had “falsely claimed,” no alleged terrorists had been detained by the Police or Immigration, and there was undoubtedly no blame-shifting between the two state security services.

In two separate operations at Ekyem, Achiase, and Akokoamong near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region in September 2022, the Police and Immigration detained 48 foreign people for engaging in illicit Network Marketing (QNET), according to the statement, per reports from the Ghana News Agency.

It stated that between September 26 and September 29, 2022, all 48 individuals were returned to their various home nations after being profiled in accordance with the two institutions’ established operating protocols.

The statement advised the general public, in particular the media, to use caution when referring to “terrorists” and to refrain from doing so in a way that would incite unnecessary fear and panic in a peaceful country.

However, the statement stated that the two state security organizations would continue to cooperate and work together in order to fulfill their separate mandates for Ghana’s benefit.

  • The police warn against doomsday predictions before watch night

The police have reminded religious groups and leaders to be measured in the communication of end-of-year prophecies that could spark panic and controversy in Ghana.

With the public interest in mind ahead of December 31 watch night services which are often used by men of God to deliver prophecies, the police warned that religious freedom is still subject to Ghana’s laws.

Police in a statement commended the various religious groups for their cooperation over the period.

It further entreated the general public, especially faith-based groups to ensure continuous compliance with the law as it relates to the communication of prophecies.

“Let us continue to remember that whereas we have the right to practise our faith in religion, freedom of worship and speech, this right must not be exercised in violation of the rights of others and the public interest.”

An example of such prophecies was in December 2018, when the head pastor of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah incurred the wrath of some Muslims aftea prophecy that the Chief Imam could die in 2019.

The Odorkor branch of his church was vandalised as a result of the prophecy.

A man believed to be a thief has reportedly been electrocuted to death in Fadama, a suburb of the Okaikoi South District of the Greater Accra Region.

A viral video shared by Okay FM showed the lifeless body of a man mysteriously hanging over the roof of a container shop.

The store the man was hanging over was closed which left many of the onlookers amazed at how he managed to get to the top of the container.

The man, who appeared to be only in boxer shorts, was having an item in his hand.

Some of the people around could be heard saying that the man was a thief who was trying to rob the store.

Others were also heard crying. It is not clear whether they are related to the alleged thief.

The residents did not go close to the alleged thief, probably waiting on the Ghana Police Service to come for his mortal remains.

The police have, however, not commented on the incident.

  • Police introduce Operation PAILES to check insecure loading of vehicles

As part of the overall strategy to prevent accidents, especially during this festive season and beyond, the Police have introduced an initiative to check the insecure loading of vehicles across the country.

The initiative, dubbed Operation PAILES (POLICE ANTI-INSECURE LOADING ENFORCEMENT STRATEGY ) is aimed at ensuring that cargo carting trucks do not take goods beyond their legally permitted limits, a practice that has become one of the major causes of accidents in the country.

According to the Police, following a piloting of the strategy in the Eastern Region over the past three months leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of over 50 insecurely loaded trucks (pictures attached), the implementation of the strategy is being rolled out across the country.

“As part of the implementation of the strategy, the Police are engaging relevant stakeholders such as the cargo association, charcoal, and timber drivers unions across the country to educate and caution them on the dangers associated with insecure loading and the need to adhere to the required legal loading limits,” a statement issued by the Police said.

“We would like to take this opportunity to urge the public to support us in our efforts to ensure strict compliance with the Anti-Insecure Loading Enforcement Strategy to make our roads safe and secure during this Christmas season and beyond,” it added.

  • 40-year-old man kills wife at Ofoase Kokoben; police arrest him, retrieve wife’s body from bush

The Bekwai Police have arrested a 40-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife.

Stephen Appiah, the suspect, was said to have hit the head of the wife, Afua Abrefi, multiple times against a wall, leading to her death instantly on Monday.

He then wrapped the body and dumped it in a bush after the act.

However, family members and friends became suspicious about the conspicuous disappearance of Abrefi and alerted the police, who arrested Appiah yesterday.

The suspect, when arrested, confessed to the killing of the wife and led the police to where he had dumped the body and it was retrieved.

The body has since been deposited at the mortuary after the necessary inventories were taken.

It was not known what really pushed the suspect to commit the act.

A police source at Bekwai, which confirmed the incident, said investigations had started.

According to the source, the incident took place at Ofoase Kokoben in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

At the time of filing this report, the police were preparing to put the suspect before the court.

In another tragic incident, a 22-year-old unemployed man, Godknows Tamakloe, has been remanded in police custody for allegedly aiding the murder of one David Korbla Klutsey, also aged 22 at Agbozume in the Ketu South of the Volta Region.

Godknows, a resident of Agbozume, on October 20, 2022, allegedly aided his stepbrother, a suspect, Remember Tamakloe (now at large), to stab the victim during a scuffle over GH¢30.

David later died on October 23 while receiving treatment at a hospital.

Police Chief Inspector Esperance Agbo, prosecuting, told the Agbozume Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Mr Issah Iddrisu, that Remember sold a mobile phone to Klutsey at a price which Klutsey had made part-payment, leaving a balance of GH¢30.00.

He said Remember and Godknows went to Klutsey for the money and a fight ensued between them during which Klutsey slapped Godknows, who fell to the ground.

Chief Inspector Agbo said God knows, managed to grab Klutsey from behind and Remember stabbed him.

Prosecutor said Remember managed to escape from the scene but Godknows was arrested and sent to the police station, while the victim was rushed to the hospital, where he died after a few days.

Godknows, who was initially arraigned on October 23, 2022, is expected to make his fourth court appearance on December 20.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Sacred Heart Hospital morgue, Abor, pending autopsy.

  • Man gets arrested after calling police 2,000 times in 9 days to harass and insult them

An elderly Japanese man was recently arrested after calling a police precinct 2,060 times in nine days to yell at the staff there and call them “tax thieves” and “big stupid a-holes”.

Between September 30th and October 8th, the 67-year-old man from Saitama Prefecture called the Prefectural Police Headquarters a total of 2060 times to yell at the staff there and tell them that they should all be fired. That’s an average of one call for every six minutes and a total talk time of around 27 hours over the nine-day interval. Eventually, police raided the man’s house and arrested him on the ground of obstructing police business. He admitted to the charges and said: “I knew the police would come for me someday”.

An investigation into this bizarre case is ongoing, but because the 67-year-old Japanese man, whose name has not been revealed, doesn’t seem too eager to collaborate with police, we may never know what possessed him to call the precinct more than 2,000 times in nine days.

Interestingly, according to the man’s phone records, he had been calling the police for years but had only recently ramped up his operation, for some mysterious reason.

Although interfering with police business and taking up resources that may be needed to save lives are serious issues, many people online declared themselves in awe of the man’s consistency and dedication to his bizarre mission.

  • Driver sentenced to prison for bribing a police officer with GHC 5

Bribing police officers to get away with committing traffic violations has become a routine, if not justifiable, among many commercial drivers.

A taxi driver, David Ayensu who worked at Tudu in Accra was part of the unlucky few that got hooked by the law after bribing a police officer with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service with Five Ghana cedis to atone for his offence.

According to Ayensu, the MTTD officer caught him driving with an expired driver’s licence but he bribed the uniformed man with a paltry amount of Five Ghana cedis in a bid to evade the consequences of his action.

“My renewed licence was seized by another police officer so I was using an old one. I knew I had erred so when the officer took the expired licence, I quickly took out Ghc 5 and filed it in an AMA operational card and handed it to him,” he recounted.

Ayensu said the patriotic police officer returned both licences to him without taking the money. He said the officer went ahead to discharge him.

He told crimecheckghana.org that while he was trying to escape from other patrol men who hooted at him to stop, he flouted traffic light rules and crossed when it had turned ‘yellow’.

The taxi driver said he ignored the police officer because he claimed the cop would have let him go if he knew he attempted to give his colleague a bribe.

“The other officer chased me with a motorbike but I refused to stop even when some pedestrians prompted me. I crossed the yellow light at a point where the officer caught up with me,” he said.

The young man said the passenger aboard his vehicle confronted the police officer when he was asked to get off the car for another one.

“The driver gave your colleague Ghc 5 so why are you following him?,” the passenger asked the police officer.

Ayensu said a brawl ensued between the passenger and the officer but he claimed he did not get involved but his car key scathed the peace officer.

“Other policemen came around and accosted me to their office after the passenger had gone,” he indicated.

Ayensu said at the police station, he was subjected to torture and was sent to court the following day.

The young driver said he was charged with careless and inconsiderate driving, which he admitted in court.

“I was fined One Thousand Eight Hundred Ghana cedis but I could not pay. I was jailed for two years at the Ankaful Main Prison,” he narrated.

Crime Check Foundation (CCF) visited the prison and met Ayensu who narrated his story to the team.

The Chief Executive Officer of Agyare Real Estate Limited, Stephen Agyare Jr. supported CCF’s Petty Offenders project to pay Ayensu’s fine for his release.

Crime Check Foundation has facilitated the release of many convicts who committed minor crimes through its fine-paying module. This is aimed at helping to decongest the prisons among others.

  • China Covid: Police clamp down after days of protests

China’s protests against Covid restrictions which erupted over the weekend appear to have died down, as authorities begin clamping down.

A heavy police presence has been reported in several cities, and some gatherings were quelled or failed to materialise.

Reports have emerged of people being questioned and their phones searched.

But overseas Chinese have continued protesting, in at least a dozen cities across the world.

Last weekend’s demonstrations had grown after a fire in a high-rise block in Urumqi, western China, killed 10 people on Thursday.

It is widely believed residents could not escape the blaze because of Covid restrictions, but local authorities have disputed this.

As a result, thousands took to the streets for days, demanding an end to Covid lockdowns – with some even making rare calls for President Xi Jinping to stand down.

But on Monday, planned protests in Beijing did not happen after officers surrounded the assembly point. In Shanghai, large barriers were erected along the main protest route and police made several arrests.

On Tuesday morning, police could be seen in both cities patrolling areas where some groups on the Telegram social media app had suggested people should gather again.

A small protest in the southern city of Hangzhou on Monday night was also quickly stopped with people swiftly arrested, according to social media footage verified by the BBC.

But in Hong Kong, dozens of protesters gathered in the centre of the city and at the campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in a show of solidarity with demonstrators in mainland China.

Many also gathered outside Chinese embassies in major cities around the world like London, Paris and Tokyo, and universities in the US and Europe.

One expert suggested that local protests were not likely to die down any time soon, saying they were likely to “ebb and flow” because people were “not being called out to the streets in a controlled fashion… they move between social media and the street”.

But Drew Thompson, a visiting senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore, added that it was also important to note that Chinese police had “tremendous capacity…[and] the ability of China to control these protests going forward… is quite high”.

Police officers block Wulumuqi street, named for Urumqi in Mandarin, in Shanghai on November 27, 2022, in the area where protests against China's zero-Covid policy took place the night before following a deadly fire in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang region.Image source, Getty Images
Image caption, Police officers blocked Wulumuqi street in Shanghai on Sunday to stop protests against China’s zero-Covid policy

Reports also claim that police were stopping people and searching their hones to check if they had virtual private networks (VPN) set up, as well as apps like Telegram and Twitter which are banned in China.

One woman told news agency AFP that she and five of her friends who attended a protest in Beijing had received phone calls from police, demanding information about their whereabouts.

In one case, a police officer visited her friend’s home after they failed to answer their phone, and asked whether they had visited the protest site, stressing that it was an “illegal assembly”.

It is unclear how police might have discovered the identities of those in attendance.

Police have also detained journalists covering the protests in recent days. News agency Reuters said one of its journalists was briefly detained on Sunday before being released.

BBC journalist Ed Lawrence was also held for several hours while covering a protest in Shanghai on the same night. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his detention was “shocking and unacceptable”, adding that Britain would raise concerns with China about its response to the protests.

Censorship has gone into overdrive on Chinese social media platforms since the weekend’s protests, to stop people seeing and discussing them.

Tens of millions of posts have been filtered from search results, while media are muting their coverage of Covid in favour of upbeat stories about the World Cup and China’s space achievements.

It’s a vastly different scene on Western social media platforms, which some Chinese people have taken to to share information including advice for protesters to avoid arrest.

One account on Instagram – a platform which is blocked in China and accessible only through a VPN – published a “safety guide for friends in Shanghai and across the country” and included tips like wearing dark coloured clothing for anonymity and bringing along goggles and water in the event that tear gas is fired.

The Chinese government has not acknowledged the protests or responded in any formal way.

    Presentational grey line

    Dilemma for Xi’s government

    Tessa Wong, BBC News, Singapore

Could the government listen to the protesters, and unwind zero Covid?

To do that now – while minimising deaths and infections – would be difficult, due to the country’s low vaccination rates among the elderly, a lack of highly effective domestic vaccines, and the government’s continued refusal to follow the rest of the world in using foreign vaccines.

“There’s a dilemma for the government,” Oxford University professor of modern Chinese history Rana Mitter told the BBC – do they import foreign vaccines “which may look embarrassing in nationalistic terms or do they try to hold the line by keeping the borders closed without any end date for this policy?”

China recently appeared to test the waters by loosening measures slightly, where they reduced some quarantine periods and stopped recording secondary contacts.

But, as seen in other countries such as Singapore and Australia which transitioned from zero Covid to living with the virus, any relaxation of measures would inevitably result in a jump in infections and deaths.

This is an outcome which Chinese authorities still appear unwilling to accept.

China remains the only major economy with a strict zero-Covid policy, with local authorities clamping down on even small outbreaks with mass testing, quarantines and snap lockdowns.

While China developed its own Covid vaccines, they are not as good as the mRNA technology – such as the Pfizer and Moderna shots – used elsewhere.

Two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine gives 90% protection against severe disease or death vs 70% with China’s Sinovac.

The vaccines have also not been given to enough people. Far too few of the elderly – who are most likely to die from Covid – have been immunised.

There is also very little “natural immunity” from people surviving infections as a consequence of stopping the virus in its tracks.

It means new variants spread far more quickly than the virus that emerged three years ago and there is a constant risk of it being imported from countries that are letting the virus spread.

  • Protesters respond to police with sarcasm

In Beijing, protesters have reacted to police demands in a different way.

They’ve acquiesced to a request for them to stop chanting “no more lockdowns” – and instead have taken to sarcastically demanding that they “want more lockdowns” and “Covid tests”.

An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to Joseph Ofosu, a 47-year-old, in the sum of GH¢150,000.00 with three sureties, two to be in the jurisdiction and to be justified.

The accused person was charged with fraudulent transaction of land, contrary to section 277(2)(a) of the Land Act 2020, (ACT 1036).

The court presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah adjourned the matter to December 7, 2022.

The court also asked the prosecution to file and serve all disclosures and witness statements on the accused person.

Inspector Cyrus E. Conduah told the court that the complainant in the case was Isabelle Odartey-Wellington, a businesswoman, while Mr Ofosu was an estate agent.

It said Madam Odartey-Wellington, who was looking for a piece of land to buy in December 2021, came into contact with Ofosu and he offered the woman two plots of land for sale at Pantang at the price of GH¢360,000.00.

The prosecution said Ofosu told Madam Odartey-Wellington, he was authorized to sell the land by the Afutu Brempong Family.

It said Madam Odartey-Wellington went ahead to make enquires about the said family and got to know that the land in the area belonged to them and decided to make a part-payment of GH¢194,500.00 to Ofosu.

The prosecution said Madam Odartey-Wellington went on the land to start her development but was driven away from the land by another claimant, who told her the Afutu Brempong family had sold the land to him some years back.

It said Madam Odartey-Wellington called Ofosu and informed him about her encounter and he started avoiding her phone calls.

  • Police and protesters in Tunisia clash over migrants missing since September

Tunisian police used tear gas on hundreds of demonstrators on Friday as they clashed when protesters tried to reach the southern island of Djerba where the 18th Francophonie summit is due to take place.

The crowds were trying to establish the fate of Tunisian migrants who have been missing for nearly two months.

A makeshift boat carrying 18 Tunisian migrants en route to the Italian coast disappeared during the night of 20-21 September after leaving Zarzis in the south-east. Only eight bodies have since been found since.

Police units were deployed at the entrance to Djerba, an island in southern Tunisia, to prevent the protesters, who came in dozens of cars and motorbikes, from entering.

Ali Kenis is a fisherman from Zarzis and says he is determined to keep the protests going: “We will launch civil disobedience, and close all entry and exit points to Zarzis, and all public and private establishments, so we can isolate the city,” he says.

Families and relatives of the missing migrants, supported by the inhabitants and fishermen of Zarzis, organised several demonstrations gathering thousands of people to push the authorities to intensify the search for those still missing.

A general strike was held in the city on 18 October to demand an investigation into the sinking of the boat and the hasty burial of some of the bodies in a private cemetery (“Jardin d’Afrique”), usually reserved for sub-Saharan migrants.

  • 8 illegal currency traders granted bail

Eight people have been granted GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties each by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly engaging in illegal currency trade on the ‘black market’.

One of the sureties must be justified by land documents or any property equivalent to GH¢100,000.

The accused were also ordered to report to the police twice a month.

They have been charged with engaging in the business of dealing in foreign exchange without licence.

    They all pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Mrs. Adelaide Abui-Keddey set December 12 for the next hearing.

Arguing for bail, counsel for the accused, Victor Kojogah Adawudu, told the court that his clients were engaged in decent work such as trading, security work, and commercial dispatch ‘Okada‘ riding at Tudu.

He added that it was unfortunate that the accused were at the wrong place when the police conducted a swoop to arrest people engaged in illegal currency trade at the location.

He added that his clients had a fixed place of abode, posed no flight risk, and had family and friends ready to stand in as sureties.

In opposition, Chief Inspector Isaac Babayi expressed concern that granting the accused bail may interfere with their investigations as they were on the hunt for other culprits, whose accused may tip off when released.

He added that the accused also posed a flight risk and pointed to defense counsel’s submission that one of the accused Barkisu Yakubu was travelling to Nigeria for business when she was nabbed.

The facts led by Chief Insp Babayi were that the accused were Mohammed Ali, Barkisu Yakubu, Shaibu Suleman Issah, and Baryl Ali.

The others were Bashiru Saadu, Saadu Hamidu, Mumudu Shamsudeen and Karim Yahaya.

Chief Insp. Babayi said on November 10, 2022, a team of police personnel in collaboration with officials of the Bank of Ghana embarked on an intelligence-led operation to clamp down on illegal activities of forex trade business in Ghana.

That operation, he said, led them to Tudu in Accra where they arrested the accused who was transacting the business of exchanging currencies.

He added that investigations later disclosed that the accused were engaged in foreign exchange business without a license.

Chief Insp. Babayi told the court that a search conducted on the accused revealed thousands of Ghana Cedis and other foreign currencies on some of them.

He said others succeeded in passing monies on to their accomplices who fled with it.

“These monies were retrieved from the accused as indicated against their names; Mohammed Ali GH¢2,300 and $87 USD, Barikisu Yakubu

    GH¢10,010 and ₦6,002 Naira, Shaibu Suleman Issah GH¢3,850 and CFA65, 000, Baryi Ali GH¢ 848, CFA 80,000 and USD $70.

“Bashiru Saadu GH¢ 52.00 and ₦25 Naira, Saadu Hamidu GH¢ 361 and Karim Yahaya GH¢42,” he told the court.

  • GOP leader called police on 9-year-old spraying lanternflies to save trees

Gordon Lawshe, the co-chairman and treasurer of the Caldwell Republican Party, called the police on a 9-year-old girl who was spraying lanternflies to save trees in her neighborhood. In the wake of the incident, Bobbi Wilson’s mother, Monique Joseph, said that race played a factor in the October 22 call their neighbor made to the police, The Progress reported.

One of the trees Bobbi was trying to save was planted by her grandmother. Joseph opened up about the incident during a mayor and council meeting on November 1.

“The morning of October 22, our neighbor called the police, identified himself and reported, ‘There’s a little black woman walking, spraying stuff on the sidewalks and trees. I don’t know what the hell she is doing, it scares me though,’ and included that she was wearing a hoodie,” Joseph said at the event.

“It is sickening and scary to hear my neighbor use triggering words that have resulted in the deaths of too many Black and Brown children and adults at the hands of police. ‘Black,’ ‘hooded’ and ‘I’m scared’ – those are trigger words.”

The recording of the conversation between Lawshe and the police was obtained by Joseph. And though she said the officer who responded to the scene handled the situation well, she said the incident has negatively impacted her daughter.

“Based on everything that has transpired, I am concerned and outraged. I want this to be a teachable moment for our town on racial bias, diversity, equity and inclusion and how we together can ensure going forward little black and brown children in this town can feel safe in this community,” said Joseph.

“This is a very personal matter for my family. This is not political and I am not here for a party. I am here for my 9-year-old, my 13-year-old and myself.”

Joseph and Lawshe have been neighbors for over seven years. “Racism, intentional or not, is racism,” Joseph said. The mayor of Caldwell, John Kelley, said he was “troubled” by the incident, adding that he was “so sorry” Joseph’s daughter “had to experience that and thank you for sharing.”

“This is not something that is a part of Caldwell, it’s just not. It saddens me and I’m glad you shared this with us and with the public,” he added.

Joseph attended the meeting with her two daughters. Her 13-year-old daughter, Hayden, also addressed the attendees at the meeting. “She was not only doing something amazing for our environment, she was doing something that made her feel like a hero,” said Hayden. “I can confidently assure you that Bobbi will not forget this.”

Joseph also said Lawshe refused to have a dialogue with her after she asked Caldwell police to arrange for them to meet at the police station, The Progress reported. She also said they’re yet to talk to each other.

“I just wanted to have a conversation with him as a neighbor, as Bobbi’s mom and as the woman who lives across the street from him,” Joseph said. “He needs to understand what he did. Whether he is aware of it or not, he needs to understand the hurt it has caused.”

Following the incident, the West Caldwell Police Department invited Joseph and Bobbi to the station for a tour. They also spoke on matters pertaining to race relations.

“They wanted her to know they heard about what had happened and she has no reason to be afraid and to know what they do as a police department,” Joseph said. “They also do really good things. They are a service of help, not just to stop the bad guys. It was a really good experience and it was impactful.”

  • Man arrested on DUI charges in Arizona was driving with an Owl in his car

Police in Arizona found quite the surprise after pulling over a man on DUI charges this week.

CBS 11 reports the Payson Police Department discovered a live owl riding shotgun in a car being driven by a man suspected of DUI charges. According to police, the driver claimed he illegally bought the owl for $100 from a person at a gas station. The gas station attendant told him they’d found the owl on the side of the road.

“Wildlife should remain wild,” the department said on Facebook. “It is illegal to possess, transport, buy, or sell wildlife unless expressly permitted by Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS 17-309).”

“The Payson Police Department would also like to take this opportunity to encourage the public not to use methamphetamine or you too may find yourself illegally purchasing a wild owl, for $100, in the middle of the night, from strangers, at a local gas station,” the department added.

The unidentified man was charged with aggravated DUI, possession of methamphetamine, and possession/transport/purchase of wildlife.

Meanwhile, the owl is currently under the care of Arizona Game and Fish, which is treating the animal for minor injuries.

“We think she got knocked around or jostled somehow in that tumultuous night she had,” said Liberty Wildlife’s Wildlife Biologist, Laura Hackett. “The officer handled it like a pro, so he has a good story to take home to his family.”
