Luis Rubiales trial: Hermoso to appear in court to testify against ex-football federation chief

Jenni Hermoso, a key member of Spain’s World Cup-winning team, is set to testify on Monday in the trial of former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales. The case stems from the infamous kiss that sparked a national “Me Too” movement in Spain.

The 34-year-old striker is the first witness in the proceedings, which will take place at Madrid’s High Court and are expected to last at least nine days.

Rubiales, 47, faces charges of sexual assault and attempting to coerce Hermoso, with the help of three other individuals, into falsely declaring that the kiss was consensual. Rubiales denies the accusations.

The incident occurred after Spain’s victory in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, when Rubiales was seen kissing Hermoso on the lips during the post-match awards ceremony. While Rubiales maintains the gesture was consensual, Hermoso described it as an act of aggression.

The scandal not only overshadowed Spain’s historic World Cup win but also became a turning point in the fight for gender equality in Spanish football. It helped amplify efforts by female players to highlight sexism and push for equal treatment with their male counterparts.

Rubiales has requested his daughters to testify in the case. Alongside him in the dock are former women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda, ex-football federation sporting director Albert Luque, and former RFEF marketing head Ruben Rivera. The group is expected to testify after the court hears from all other witnesses, with a date set for February 12.

Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, though under Spanish law, individuals sentenced to less than two years may avoid jail time by paying compensation, provided they have no prior criminal record.

The fallout from the scandal led to a strike by Hermoso’s teammates and prompted major changes within the federation, including the dismissal of Rubiales’s deputy and the appointment of a female head coach for the women’s national team for the first time.

Let Mbappé do things his own way – Cristiano Ronaldo advises Real Madrid

Cristiano Ronaldo has urged Real Madrid to “take care” of Kylian Mbappé and emphasized that the young forward should “chart his own path” as he strives to establish himself as a legend at the Bernabéu.

Mbappé has already netted 22 goals in his first season with Madrid, despite facing early criticism for his form.

Ronaldo, the club’s all-time top scorer with 451 goals, revealed that Mbappé had always looked up to him as a child. The two had a memorable moment when they took a photo together after Mbappé’s trial at the club as a teenager.

“Look after the lad,” Ronaldo urged, in an extract from an interview with Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, due to be broadcast in full on Monday. “The fans need to look after him. He’s very good. The club have to help to protect him, I have no doubt he’ll bring a lot of joy to Madrid fans.

Cristiano Ronaldo was Kylian Mbappé’s childhood hero growing up

“I love [Mbappé], not just because of his story as a kid, how he loved Cristiano, I was his idol,” Ronaldo said. “I think he’s a top player.”

Ronaldo revealed he now tunes in to watch Real Madrid’s games because his son, Mateo, is a fan of Mbappé.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he feels Mbappé still needs some help in adjusting to his role in the Real Madrid team.

“It’s complicated, because he doesn’t know how to play as a forward in my opinion — or rather, it’s not that he doesn’t know, but it isn’t his position,” Ronaldo said. “If I was at Madrid, I’d show him how to play as a number nine.

“I wasn’t a forward. I got used to it, but I was a winger. People forget that. I was a forward, but not a typical forward. I think [Mbappé] shouldn’t be a typical forward, he should do things his way.”

Mbappé has already won two trophies with Madrid, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and scored as Madrid were humbled 5-2 by Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa last month.

Madrid now face a testing few weeks, playing Leganés in a Copa del Rey quarterfinal before a Madrid Derby with Atlético Madrid on Saturday and then facing Manchester City in their Champions League knockout stage playoff.

  • DR Congo calls on Arsenal, PSG others to end ‘blood-stained’ Visit Rwanda sponsorship deals

DR Congo calls on Arsenal, PSG others to end ‘blood-stained’ Visit Rwanda sponsorship deals

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has urged top European football clubs Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to sever their sponsorship ties with Visit Rwanda, condemning the deals amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.

The call comes as M23 rebels seized control of Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC, and the United Nations refugee agency reports that over 400,000 people have been displaced this year.

UN experts have accused the Rwandan army of effectively controlling M23 operations.

DRC’s Foreign Minister, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, sent letters to the clubs’ executives, questioning the ethics of continuing the sponsorships.

She raised concerns that Visit Rwanda’s funding could be linked to the illegal extraction of minerals from DRC’s occupied territories, with the minerals smuggled across the border to Rwanda for export.

In her letter to Arsenal, Kayikwamba Wagner stated that Rwanda’s responsibility in the ongoing conflict has become undeniable, following a UN report revealing the deployment of 4,000 Rwandan troops in DRC.

“It is time Arsenal ended its blood-stained sponsorship deals with this oppressor nation. If not for your own consciences, then the clubs should do it for the victims of Rwandan aggression,” she wrote.

Arsenal, PSG, Bayern Munich and Visit Rwanda have been contacted for comment.

Why are the Visit Rwanda deals controversial?

The Visit Rwanda campaign has successfully raised the East African country’s profile but Rwanda’s government has been accused of investing in sport to enhance its global image – a strategy labelled by critics as ‘sportswashing’.

A sleeve partnership with Arsenal began in 2018, with the latest sponsorship reported to be worth more than £10m ($12.39 million) per year.

A sponsorship with PSG was agreed the following year, and Bayern Munich signed a five-year football development and tourism promotion partnership with Rwanda in 2023.

Meanwhile, Rwanda President Paul Kagame has announced a bid to stage a Formula 1 race and Kigali is set to be the venue for cycling’s World Road Championships in September.

On Friday the UCI, cycling’s world governing body, said there were no plans to relocate the event away from Rwanda.

The Central Africa director at Human Rights Watch, a campaign group which investigates and reports on cases of abuse around the globe, says these deals and events help hide Rwanda’s “abysmal track record” on human rights.

“Rwanda has major flaws with due process which violate its own internal laws or international standards,” HRW’s Lewis Mudge told BBC Sport Africa last month.

“Increasingly we’re seeing the space for freedom of expression, for some degree of political autonomy, is actually shrinking.”

The Rwandan government has dismissed accusations of sportswashing, with its chief tourism officer Irene Murerwa calling them “a distraction” from the “amazing and outstanding achievements the country has made”.

What is the latest in eastern DR Congo?

Four armed militants wearing camouflage and holding guns sit on the back of a truck as another soldier with a grenade launcher on his shoulder walks past in the foreground.

The UN says at least 700 people have been killed in intense fighting in Goma since Sunday.

UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said 2,800 people have been injured, as M23 rebels – backed by Rwanda – captured the capital of North Kivu province.

The rebels are now reported to be moving south towards Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu.

The conflict in eastern DR Congo dates back to the 1990s but has rapidly escalated in recent weeks.

M23 , which is made up of ethnic Tutsis, say they are fighting for minority rights, while DR Congo’s government says the Rwanda-backed rebels are seeking control of the eastern region’s vast mineral wealth.

Authorities in Kigali have denied direct military involvement in the conflict, insisting its troops are only stationed along the border to protect its territory and civilians.

The incident escalated an already tense situation, which had seen earlier confrontations on the pitch. During the match, a heated brawl erupted between players from Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC.

A video shared by spectator Hussein Adams captured Kotoko goalkeeper Mohammed Camara striking two Nsoatreman players on the sideline.

The conflict worsened when Kotoko captain Justice Blay joined in, clashing with multiple Nsoatreman players. Meanwhile, angry fans hurled objects at the visiting team.

The altercations led to both Camara and Blay receiving red cards, and Kotoko ultimately finished the match with only eight players. They were defeated 1-0.

Vetting chaos: Prof Gyampo urges IGP to arrest MPs involved

Political analyst Professor Ransford Gyampo has called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, to take immediate action and arrest Members of Parliament involved in the recent destruction of state property during a chaotic altercation at the Appointments Committee meeting last Thursday.

The incident occurred on January 30, during the ministerial vetting, when several MPs became involved in an outburst, damaging microphones and tables after the Majority caucus pushed forward with the vetting process, despite the Minority’s request to delay it by a day.

Speaking in an interview with TV3, Professor Gyampo emphasized that the Majority should not allow the Minority to control the scheduling or dictate the course of parliamentary business.

“I have said that Dampare is on record to have arrested Members of Parliament and government officials for violating traffic rules. And it is not possible for people to destroy public property or state property and for us to sweep it under the carpet.

“So I am saying that we should go to the extent of asking Dampare to arrest those culpable for destroying properties that we used my taxes and your taxes to procure.

“I think that the majority group must be commended for being tolerant, overly tolerant of the minority group. You see, democracy is about majority rule.

That tolerance posturing of the majority group is not licentious for minority tyranny and minority wanting to now dictate as to how things must be done.”

Tullow plans to resume oil drilling in Ghana’s fields in May 2025

Tullow has announced plans to resume drilling in Ghana’s oilfields starting in May 2025, following a successful resolution of its tax dispute with Ghana.

The UK-based oil company stated that the settlement of the Ghana Branch Profits Remittance Tax arbitration has lifted a $320 million contingent liability and reaffirmed the validity of its petroleum agreements.

For 2024, Tullow reported a revenue of $1.5 billion, with an average realized oil price of $80.2 per barrel (pre-hedging). The company’s net debt decreased to $1.45 billion, reflecting a gearing ratio of 1.3 times.

In terms of production, Tullow’s working interest output averaged 61.2 kboepd, including 6.6 kboepd of gas.

Jubilee field contributed 33.9 kbopd (net), while TEN field produced 10.2 kbopd (net).

The company completed five new wells on the Jubilee field in 2024—three producers and two water injectors—finishing the drilling program six months ahead of schedule and with a perfect safety record.

FPSO uptime at both the Jubilee and TEN fields averaged 97% for the year.

Additionally, there was a revision in reserves, including a reduction of 22.4 mmboe due to 2024 production, and an upward revision of TEN reserves following efforts to lower fixed costs, especially concerning FPS operations.

Announce Hajj fees now so that we can prepare accordingly – Concerned Muslims calls on govt

A group of concerned Muslims has urged the government to promptly disclose the fees for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, expressing frustration over the lack of communication.

In a statement, the group, known as Concerned Muslims, criticized the delay, pointing out that other West African nations have already made significant progress in their preparations.

They emphasized that the Hajj Task Force, established by President Mahama, returned from Saudi Arabia two weeks ago after finalizing negotiations with service providers and securing official agreements, yet the government has yet to announce the pilgrimage fees.

The group maintained that it is also “worried about this inaction and unacceptable breakdown in communication by the government.”

“Pilgrimage to Hajj, as is well known, is a sacred exercise, which every Ghanaian Muslim dream to undertake, and it is also a capital-intensive exercise, which requires adequate financial preparation and readiness, to fulfil this life-long dream,” the group said and called on the government to urgently come out with the fees.

The group questioned whether the government’s delay in announcing the fee was due to challenges on their end or if it was related to their election pledge to significantly lower the Hajj fee, which was set at GHȼ75,000 last year.

“If the NDC and President Mahama are caught up in a conundrum and cannot find the subsidy to fulfill the promise, as recent media reports have said, they should be bold enough and tell us the truth, so that we can move forward,” the group added.

Food shortages under Free SHS will be averted – Kwakye Ofosu assures

Acting spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has given assurances that the government will implement effective measures to address the challenges related to feeding under the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

This commitment comes after the government released GHS200 million about two weeks ago to tackle the existing shortfalls.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, January 2, Ofosu criticized the previous administration for poor planning and execution of the policy, which he said resulted in schools reopening without sufficient food supplies.

“Beyond that GHS200 million was released about a week ago or a week and a half ago to address the shortfalls in feeding. Again, because of poor planning and poor implementation of the education policy, we had a situation where schools were going to be opened and yet there was no food available to feed the students,” he stated.

Ofosu pointed out that despite appeals from education stakeholders, especially headmasters, to postpone the reopening of schools, the government declined their request. This decision, he noted, led to schools resuming without adequate food supplies.

“So upon taking office, President Mahama took decisive action and within a few days, he ordered that food be evacuated to the schools. In addition to that, GHS200 million was released to the various schools through the Ghana Education Service to procure food for the students,” Kwakye Ofosu added.

Kwakye Ofosu assured that going forward, adequate measures will be put in place to ensure that there is enough food to feed the students.

“So for now, that has been done and going forward, adequate measures will be put in place to ensure that we have enough food to feed the students,” he noted.

  • We have lost it; conscience and character! – GNAT fumes over Accra Academy machete attack incident

We have lost it; conscience and character! – GNAT fumes over Accra Academy machete attack incident

General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, has voiced serious concerns about the decline in moral values and discipline within Ghanaian schools.

His remarks follow the circulation of a disturbing viral video showing an Accra Academy Senior High School student violently lashing two of his classmates with a cutlass.

The video has sparked national outrage and renewed discussions about the state of discipline and character formation in educational institutions across the country.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, February 2, Musah condemned the growing disregard for moral principles and self-discipline among students, warning that this worrying trend could have far-reaching consequences if not addressed promptly.

“As a nation, character and conscience, we have lost it. We are now training people with knowledge, but for their character and conscience, we have lost it. If care is not taken, we will all be in trouble in the coming years. This is something that policymakers must take a serious look at,” he stated.

Musah linked the decline in discipline to the erosion of authority in schools, highlighting how the influence of headteachers and teachers in upholding order has significantly weakened.

He reminisced about an era when headteachers had the power to enforce strict disciplinary measures, and parents worked closely with schools to address and correct their children’s behavior.

“When I was in elementary school, the headteacher was so empowered that no student could misbehave in the school. Parents could even come into the schools and report their wards to the teachers. Teachers, at the time, were empowered.

“Today, teachers have been disabled. There are instances where when things happen at the school, the children will go and inform their parents, and they will come to the school and beat up the teacher. So, when things happen, the teachers cannot talk because when they do, either the students or the parents will come after you,” he explained.

The Musah emphasized the need for a collective effort to restore discipline and moral values in schools. He called for the empowerment of headteachers and school administrators to enable them to enforce rules and maintain order effectively.

“It looks like nobody cares, and we are saying that it is free for all. The earlier we come together and empower the headteachers and school administrators like it used to be, the better for all of us,” he stated.

  • Afenyo-Markin accuses Ablakwa-led ORAL of espionage

Afenyo-Markin accuses Ablakwa-led ORAL of espionage

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, led by Foreign Affairs Minister-nominee Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, conducted drone surveillance over his private properties.

According to the Effutu MP, he was alerted several times by associates about the suspicious activity but chose not to react, asserting that he has nothing to conceal and that all his assets were acquired legitimately.

Afenyo-Markin made these claims during an appearance on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, February 2, 2025. His allegations come shortly after Ablakwa disclosed details regarding Afenyo-Markin’s properties during his ministerial vetting on Friday, January 31.

“Before his vetting, ask Ablakwa whether we didn’t sit as brothers. I said, ‘Sammy, there were things that you went overboard. I think if you make concessions, we’ll be fine,’” Afenyo-Markin recounted.

Despite their discussion, he claims Ablakwa’s ORAL team continued its surveillance activities.
“Meanwhile, I was aware that these ORAL guys have been flying drones in Winneba over my property. I kept quiet. I managed it. They went to my beachfront property, mounted a drone, and flew it from the community center near the ‘nshorna.’ My boy saw it. I told them to ignore it,” he said.

According to him, the alleged drone surveillance was not limited to Winneba but also targeted his residence in Abelenkpe and other properties.

“In Abelenkpe, you’ll be there in the morning and you’ll see drones flying. The policemen have seen it. They told me, but I said ignore it. Sometimes, early in the morning, we see drones behind the rail line, and I know they are spying on my house. What business do drones have at the Minority Leader’s residence?” he questioned.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin further refuted claims that his lands in Winneba are state-owned, describing it as a misrepresentation.
“The gentleman brought a search report and created the impression that my lands in Winneba are state lands. With the greatest respect [they are not],” he asserted.

Kwabena Kwabena hurt my when he rescheduled his Val’s concert in 2024 – Akwaboah

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Akwaboah has responded to remarks by fellow musician Kwabena Kwabena about the origins of Valentine’s Day concerts in Ghana.

During an interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, Akwaboah reacted to Kwabena Kwabena’s claim that he was the first to introduce Valentine’s Day concerts in the country.

Kwabena Kwabena had earlier stated in an interview that he was the pioneer of these events in Ghana.

“On the 14th of February 2014, that was the first time I did a Valentine’s concert,” Kwabena said.

Akwaboah expressed surprise at Kwabena Kwabena’s claim, revealing that he had always performed at Kwabena Kwabena’s concert on February 12th, only to see Kwabena Kwabena announce a Valentine’s Day concert on February 14th in 2024.

“Yeah, I was kinda surprised though. I know his concert is always on the 12th of February, and so what we do is, on the 12th, I perform for him, and on the 14th, he comes to my show. And I think 4-5 days before, the team actually called me for a performance for him, and I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll come,’ and all of a sudden, I see him post about the 14th,” he told DJ Slim.

When asked about the reason behind the cancellation of his 2024 Shades of Love concert, Akwaboah Jr. explained: “There were two reasons… one was gigs outside the country, and two, I was looking for a bigger venue, and I got the Grand Arena… that was where it was happening. So, from Kwabena’s own, I was looking for another big one (venue). And I felt like playing outside the country.”

Asked if he was hurt by what Kwabena Kwabena did, he responded in the affirmative.

“In as much as I was hurt, I didn’t have a problem with him because I am not the only one that can do a show on that day,” he said.

Talking about his current relationship with Kwabena Kwabena, Akwaboah stated, “It’s been cool. I mean, we met at Royal Senchi, we talked about it, I asked whether they’re doing it this year and he said yes, and I was like okay, cool.”

Meanwhile, Akwaboah’s Shades of Love Concert 2025 is set to happen at La Palm on February 14th, with regular tickets selling for 300 GHS, VIP for 500 GHS, and VVIP for 750 GHS. For reservations and more, call 0246466770.

Man who killed soldier at Kasoa over land to appear in court on February 11

An Accra High Court has scheduled February 11, 2025, to hear the case of Nana Berima, also known as Ben Lord, who allegedly shot and killed soldier Lance Corporal Michael Danso at Kasoa Millennium City years ago.

During the court session on Tuesday, Ben Lord’s lawyer informed the judge that they had filed a formal bail application for his release.

Two other individuals, Nana Ababio and Kofi Ano Gyekye, also known as Fiifi, are also on trial for their alleged roles in a land dispute that led to the soldier’s death.

However, two other suspects, Oteng and Salisu, are currently on the run.

Ababio and Gyekye have been charged with conspiracy, while Ababio faces an additional charge of murder.

Ababio remains in police custody, while Gyekye has been granted bail set at GH₵1 million with two sureties, who must prove they can meet the amount.

As part of his bail conditions, Gyekye was required to submit his passport to the court registry.

The incident happened on April 30, 2024, around 4:00 PM, when Lance Corporal Michael Danso and two fellow soldiers, Lance Corporals Abdul Omar Raham and Ametus Matthew, drove to the Millennium City Police Station in a Rav4 to report a case.

Unfortunately, this visit resulted in the tragic death of Danso.

  • IFE to offer €650k-€10m co-financing grants for job-creating projects

IFE to offer €650k-€10m co-financing grants for job-creating projects

The Facility Investing for Employment (IFE) has launched a new round of funding opportunities in Ghana, offering substantial co-financing grants ranging from €650,000 to €10 million for investment projects that create sustainable jobs.

An initiative of the German government, IFE is managed by KfW Development Bank under the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The program is well-known for providing co-financing grants to businesses and organizations focused on job creation across Africa.

The launch event, held in Accra, marked the beginning of the Call for Proposals, which is open to individuals, companies, and organizations. The application window will remain open until April 15, 2025.

Karim Gad, the Country Manager for IFE in Ghana, explained that the funding program has four categories, each with varying co-financing ratios. Non-profit projects with no revenue can receive up to 90% funding, while revenue-generating non-profit projects can access up to 75% funding.

For-profit projects that create jobs for third parties can receive up to 35% funding, and for-profit projects that create jobs within the company can access up to 25% funding.

The program is not limited to Ghana and also covers Morocco, Rwanda, and Senegal. To apply, applicants must be legally registered entities with at least three years of operation. They can apply individually or as part of a consortium.

Social protection is a core element of the IFE initiative. Roland Steinmann, IFE’s Head of Social Protection, emphasized that projects combining job creation with social protection measures stand a better chance of success.

The program offers additional funding for projects that go beyond basic social protection requirements, such as health insurance, unemployment benefits, accident insurance, and infrastructure improvements like kindergartens, healthcare facilities, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Adwoa Kwarteng Larbi, IFE’s Ghana Country Focal Point, highlighted the importance of carefully reviewing the application guidelines. She noted that successful projects would need to balance job creation with improving worker welfare.

The application process is in two stages. The first stage requires submitting an online concept note via SmartME by April 15, 2025, at 17:00 CEST. Submissions made by February 28, 2025, will be prioritized.

Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit detailed project proposals, and site visits may be conducted as part of the due diligence process.

For a project to be considered, it must meet two main criteria: it should demonstrate the potential to create jobs and there must be a clear need for the IFE grant to implement the project.

I assure you, your work will not be in vain – Mahama to Constitution Review Committee

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged his full support for constitutional reforms, assuring the newly formed Constitution Review Committee that their efforts will lead to real change.

He emphasized that this initiative would not be another abandoned reform attempt but a crucial step toward improving governance in Ghana.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the committee members on Thursday, January 30, President Mahama urged them to thoroughly review past recommendations, identify key areas for change, and create a clear plan for effective constitutional amendments.

He stressed the importance of turning this process into concrete action rather than letting it become another unfinished reform effort in Ghana’s history.

“Understand the weight of responsibility that comes with this task, and I assure you that your work will not be in vain.

This will not be an exercise in futility. We are determined to see this process through and have every confidence in your ability to deliver results that will serve both present and future generations of Ghanaians,” President Mahama declared.

The committee members comprise the following: Prof. H Kwasi Prempeh – Chairman; Justice Sophia Adinyirah – Member; Prof. Kwame Karikari – Member; Mrs Charlotte Osei – Member; Dr Godwin Djokoto – Member; Ibrahim Tanko Amidu – Member; Dr Esi Ansah – Member; Dr Rainer Akumperigeya – Secretary.

President Mahama expressed confidence in the committee, stating that members were chosen for their integrity, expertise, and dedication to Ghana’s development, not political affiliations.

He also encouraged them to actively engage with the public, ensuring that the revised constitution truly represents the values, aspirations, and expectations of all Ghanaians..

‘Hye me bo’ is my longest project so far; took me a year to record

Ghanaian singer Akwaboah has opened up about the lengthy process of creating his hit song, Hye Me Bo. He shared that it took him more than a year to finish the track, making it his longest project to date.

During an interview on Hitz FM, Akwaboah explained that songwriting usually comes easily to him, depending on his mood. However, crafting love songs takes more time and care to make sure they connect with real emotions.

While most of his popular songs are recorded within two to three months, he shared that Hye Me Bo was different. It required him to dive deep into his feelings, ensuring the song truly captured what was in his heart.

“It’s not just a song,” Akwaboah explained. “It took getting deep into my emotions. It comes with a vibe, and then you start writing depending on how you feel. You really need to talk to yourself to get it done.”

He acknowledged that his need for perfection caused delays in the process. Whenever the lyrics didn’t feel right, he would pause and come back later to make sure every line was just right.

In the end, the song turned out to be exactly what he wanted—a true reflection of his feelings and fears, while celebrating the beauty of love. It touches on his fear of love, shaped by seeing his father’s painful experiences. But after experiencing love for himself, he found its sweetness and promised to create lasting memories of it.

  • Aston Villa rejects Arsenal’s approach for Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa rejects Arsenal’s approach for Ollie Watkins

Aston Villa has turned down an offer from Arsenal for England striker Ollie Watkins.

According to sources who spoke to BBC Sport, Arsenal inquired about the 29-year-old on Monday. Reports of a £60 million bid from the Gunners surfaced just hours before Aston Villa’s Champions League match against Celtic at Villa Park on Wednesday night.

Watkins played in the game, scored a goal, but also missed a strange penalty after slipping in the second half.

Villa has made it clear they have no plans to sell Watkins, especially amid ongoing speculation that fellow striker Jhon Duran could move to Saudi Arabia.

Sources also revealed that Villa is unhappy with the timing of Arsenal’s approach, as it came just before an important Champions League match and only a week before the January transfer deadline.

It remains uncertain whether Arsenal will make another bid before the transfer window closes on Monday at 11:00 PM GMT.

So far this season, Watkins has scored 11 goals in 32 games and recently netted the equalizer in Villa’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Since joining Villa from Brentford for £28 million in 2020, he has scored 80 goals in 200 appearances.

Arsenal is in search of a new striker before the transfer window closes, as Gabriel Jesus is sidelined with a serious knee injury sustained during their FA Cup loss to Manchester United.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday that the Gunners “need some help” in attack this season.

He said the club were “actively looking” to sign a striker who was able to “make an impact” after losing both Bukayo Saka and Jesus to long-term injuries.

“So we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the frontline, it’s clear,” Arteta said.

Arsenal is competing for the Premier League title for the third straight season but currently trails Liverpool by six points. Liverpool also has one game in hand.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have been linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as they continue their search for a new attacker.

  • Number 12: Court of Appeal rules that Anas Aremeyaw Anas to testify without mask

Number 12: Court of Appeal rules that Anas Aremeyaw Anas to testify without mask

The Court of Appeal has ruled that investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas must testify in public without his trademark mask in the ongoing trial of Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The decision, made on Thursday, January 30, 2025, was reached unanimously by a panel of three judges—Justices Anthony Oppong, Ackaah Boafo, and Aboagye Tandoh. They stated that Anas could not give evidence while hiding his face.

Justice Ackaah Boafo, who delivered the ruling, explained that an accused person’s right to a fair trial is more important than the state’s arguments for witness protection.

The court stressed that Nyantakyi has the right to see and challenge the person testifying against him.

The Court of Appeal also criticized the High Court for reconsidering the state’s request to allow Anas to testify in disguise. It ruled that the High Court should have followed an earlier Supreme Court decision on the same issue instead of revisiting the matter.

“The doctrine of stare decisis binds lower courts to the decisions of higher courts, and as such, the High Court erred in revisiting an issue already settled by the Supreme Court,” the ruling stated.

This ruling means that Anas, who is famous for his undercover investigations, must appear in court without his signature hood when testifying against former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi is on trial over allegations of corruption that were revealed in Anas’ 2018 Number 12 documentary, which exposed misconduct in Ghanaian football.

Medeama SC appoints Ibrahim Tanko as their new head coach

Medeama SC has appointed Ibrahim Tanko as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Tanko takes over from Bosnian coach Nebojsa Kapor, who left the club by mutual agreement in December 2024.

In the interim, Evans Adotey managed the team, but he will now move into a new role as the club’s technical director.

Before joining Medeama, Tanko was the technical director of Accra Lions.

The former Borussia Dortmund player has a rich coaching background, having worked in Japan’s J-League and Germany’s Bundesliga.

He has also been an assistant coach for both Cameroon’s national team and Ghana’s Black Stars.

His first game in charge will be against Legon Cities in a Matchday 19 fixture at the TnA Stadium.

Medeama SC is currently in 7th place in the Ghana Premier League with 26 points.

Man Utd’s Amorim says he wouldn’t have Rashford in his squad if he doesn’t change

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says Marcus Rashford “must change” before he can play for the team again.

The 27-year-old forward has not played for United in seven weeks. In December, he stated that he was “ready for a new challenge.”

Once again, Rashford was not included in the squad for Thursday’s Europa League match against FCSB in Bucharest.

“Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with him – but he has to change,” Amorim said on Wednesday.

“If he changes, we are more than welcome [to include him] – and we need it. But in this moment we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Rashford, if he wants it really bad.

“You (the media) want to make it personal, I have nothing against Marcus, but I have to make the same rules for everybody.

“We need goals, we need [players who can go] one against one, we need threat in the final third.”

Rashford trained with Manchester United at Carrington on Wednesday morning but was left out of the 21-man squad for the Europa League match.

His exclusion comes amid growing speculation that he could leave Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on Monday.

After United’s 1-0 victory over Fulham on Sunday, head coach Ruben Amorim made it clear that he would rather pick his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than play someone who does not meet his expectations.

Rashford, who came through United’s youth academy, made his senior debut in 2016. He has since scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for the club.

“The situation is the same for every player. I will not put [in] any player that doesn’t give the maximum,” added Amorim.

“When I feel it is the right moment, I will put in any player to play. We are a better team with Rashford, that is clear, but until the right moment I will not change my mind.”

Lands Minister-designate, 3 others approved despite Minority’s earlier opposition to Armah-Kofi Buah

Parliament has confirmed Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, alongside three other nominees.

The other approved nominees are Tiah Ibrahim, designated for the North East Region; Frank Amoakohene, for the Ashanti Region; and Akamugri Atanga Donatus, for the Upper East Region.

Despite initial resistance from the Minority, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Armah-Kofi Buah’s approval went ahead.

The Minority Leader raised concerns based on an NPP directive regarding the nominee’s conduct, which he insisted needed to be addressed.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that these issues should be resolved before full support could be extended by the Minority.

The source of the opposition was Armah-Kofi Buah’s refusal to retract or apologize for comments he made regarding former President Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2025.

During his vetting session, Armah-Kofi Buah explained that his comments, although controversial, were not meant to offend the former President, but rather reflected the political climate at the time.

Despite acknowledging the sensitivity of his words, he stood by his statements without offering an apology or retraction.

Midwife expresses concern about increasing alcoholism behaviour among pregnant women

Midwife overseeing the Antenatal and Postnatal clinics at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, Susana Twumwaa, has raised alarm about the increasing cases of alcohol and substance abuse among pregnant women and young girls.

She emphasized the dangers these harmful behaviors pose not only to the health and development of the mothers but also to the unborn babies. Twumwaa urged women to refrain from self-medication, warning that such practices could have serious consequences.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, during a visit to the hospital, she further urged expectant mothers to make regular visits to antenatal clinics. Such visits, she noted, are crucial in preventing issues like macerated stillbirths.

She also stressed the importance of giving birth in healthcare facilities, as this allows healthcare professionals to manage potential complications during labor effectively.

Ms Twumwaa said pregnant women and girls also needed to know “obstetric history,” saying that would enable them to go through labour without difficulties and complications.

Ms. Stella Kwei Anin, a midwife on duty, advised expectant mothers to avoid engaging in strenuous activities that could increase the risk of miscarriage and other health issues.

She emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention at healthcare facilities if they notice any unusual changes in their body, urging them to prioritize their well-being and that of their babies.

Govt to end Pwalugu Dam contract – Agric Minister

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the government plans to cancel the contract for the construction of the Pwalugu Dam.

He shared this decision during an interview with the press after completing a three-day visit to various departments and agencies within the ministry.

In 2019, the government had awarded a $993 million contract for the construction of the Pwalugu multipurpose dam in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The project, which was intended to feature a hydro-solar hybrid system generating 60 MW of hydropower and 50 MW of solar power, aimed to manage water from the Gagre River, alleviate flooding in the north, and improve irrigation.

However, despite the planned completion date of 2024, the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA) reported that $12 million had been spent on mobilization and site development, but no construction has yet begun.

Speaking on what the government intends to do with the project, Agric Minister Eric Opoku said, “What we will do is to terminate that contract immediately.

We’ll terminate the Pwalugu contract, look for a contractor, seek funding, and then immediately ensure execution of the contract.”

    Potential Judgment Debt

When asked about the possibility of a judgment debt resulting from the cancellation of the contract, the Minister assured that the government would conduct thorough due diligence throughout the process to avoid any legal or financial repercussions.

“Anyway, before we terminate, we’ll refer it to the Attorney General’s department for his advice. But we are prepared to ensure that the Pwalugu project is executed.

And I can assure you that it is going to be John Mahama’s signature project in the North,” he assured.

Go to if you want to know the real state of Ghana’s economy – Oppong Nkrumah tells gov’t

Former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has argued that Ghanaians don’t require a National Economic Dialogue (NED) to understand the country’s economic situation.

He pointed out that comprehensive economic data is already accessible through the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

In this context, he suggested that former President John Mahama could directly consult the GSS for any relevant economic information. Oppong Nkrumah made these remarks during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

“We do not need a National Economic Dialogue to determine the true state of the Ghanaian economy. That data is already available at the Ghana Statistical Service, Bank of Ghana, IMF, and other multiple sources depending on what you are looking for,” he stated.

Mr. Nkrumah’s remarks come in response to the recent establishment of a seven-member NED Planning Committee by President Mahama, as part of his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians.

The committee, led by economist Ishmael Yamson, aims to tackle the nation’s urgent economic issues and lay out a roadmap for long-term development.

It is tasked with organizing a forum to facilitate policy discussions and consensus-building on strategies that will help position Ghana as a resilient, inclusive, and high-growth economy.

The committee is expected to submit its findings within a month. However, Mr. Nkrumah expressed concerns, stating that the initiative may give the impression that the government is attempting to backtrack on its previous commitments.

You don’t demand respect, it’s earned – Speaker Bagbin urges Appointments Cttee to uphold rules

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged the Appointments Committee to conduct public hearings with professionalism and strict adherence to established protocols, stressing that respect is earned, not demanded.

Addressing Parliament on January 28, Mr. Bagbin raised concerns about the committee’s conduct and called for greater decorum in its proceedings.

He said;“…Even members themselves don’t take them [Appointments Committee] seriously. I think we need to. But before we ask for our pound of flesh, respect is earned.”

He reminded the committee of the structured guidelines governing their work and urged them to uphold the integrity of the process.

“Please, Appointments Committee, we have crafted rules of how the Appointments Committee should conduct the business of public hearing.

That is the term used—public hearing of nominees of the President. I’m not too sure there’s a reference to those rules in what I am witnessing myself.”

The Appointments Committee has faced intense public scrutiny over the past two weeks for its handling of President John Mahama’s ministerial nominee vetting process.

Critics have accused the Chairman of failing to maintain order, allowing frequent disruptions, and compromising the efficiency of the hearings.

Speaker Alban Bagbin disclosed that he had received multiple complaints from both local and international observers regarding the committee’s conduct.

He used the opportunity to caution members, saying, “This is an opportunity for me to draw your attention to it, that please, respect is earned. How we behave or misbehave will determine how the people behave towards us or misbehave towards us.”

Ambulance Trial: Attorney General drops case against Ato Forson and Jakpa

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has officially withdrawn an appeal filed by his predecessor, Godfred Yeboah Dame, challenging a Court of Appeal ruling that acquitted Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa of charges related to financial loss to the state.

In a Notice of Abandonment of Appeal dated January 23, 2025, Dr. Ayine indicated that the state would no longer pursue the case.

“Please take notice that the Republic, having previously served notice of appeal against the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal on July 30, 2024, hereby gives notice that it does not intend to prosecute the appeal further and abandons all proceedings related to this matter from the date of this notice,” he stated.

On July 30, 2024, the Court of Appeal ruled in favor of an appeal filed by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the former Deputy Minister of Finance and then Minority Leader, challenging an earlier decision by the Financial and Economic Court.

The appeal stemmed from a March 2023 ruling by the High Court, which had ordered Dr. Forson to present his defense after the Attorney General’s office established a prima facie case against him in the €2.37 million ambulance procurement case.

Also facing trial were Seth Anemana, a former Chief Director at the Ministry of Health, and businessman Richard Jakpa. The court had directed all three to open their defenses against allegations of willfully causing financial loss to the state over the procurement of ambulances that were deemed unfit for use.

FIFA’s Financial Governance workshop for member associations in Accra kicks off

On Wednesday, January 29, FIFA launched a three-day Financial Governance workshop for its member associations, aimed at strengthening financial management within football. The workshop focuses on enhancing accountability, transparency, and the efficient use of resources in football organizations.

The opening session took place at the Accra Marriott Hotel in Accra, marking the start of this important initiative.

Christoph Suppiger, FIFA’s Head of Financial Governance, expressed confidence that by the end of the workshop, the participating member associations would be equipped to address and prevent financial challenges within their organizations.

“At the end of the training, the member associations should be entitled to learn a lot about different topics such as how to prevent conflict of interest, measures to put in place in order to select different providers…,” he said.

“We have elaborated a financial governance guide which contains a lot of materials for member associations to learn and then to implement in their relative member associations.”

The decision to hold the Financial Governance workshop in Ghana is the first of its kind with the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, lauding the idea.

“We are happy about the opportunity to host the FIFA Financial Governance workshop in Accra,” he mentioned.
“That said, it shows that FIFA is in sync with us and they believe we can host because in choosing the host, they take the opportunity to look at the way you have been managing your FA.

“If we were not managing the FA well FIFA would not have given us this opportunity. W are excited have this workshop here in Accra and to have our colleague coming over.”

The event is opened to English speaking member associations on the African continent

It was tough, not everyone agreed – GFA’s Henry Asante Twum on keeping Otto Addo

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars was not an easy one.

Despite facing intense criticism for the team’s underwhelming performances, particularly the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Addo’s position was debated among the GFA Executive Council members.

However, after careful consideration, the council ultimately opted to keep the 49-year-old in charge. Speaking on Sporty FM, Asante Twum admitted that the decision was a tough one, with many members uncertain about Addo’s future.

“It was a very tensed atmosphere where the Council members espoused their feelings and their positions on the future of the technical team. Not all of them said yes. It was very very difficult,” he said.

“I sat there for hours and still, it got to the point where there was a stalemate so the meeting had to be adjourned and for them to reconvene again so it was tough.

“It was not just a straightforward decision that after hearing from him or listening to him, we want to say yes or we are all saying yes to his continuous stay in office or otherwise. It was very tough. The end product is that he will stay based on the council’s stay. But the factors that led to the decision was very very tough.”

When the team reconvenes in March for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Addo will be determined to silence his critics and demonstrate his capability.

“He demands a lot” – Kudus opens up on how working with Graham Potter is like

Mohammed Kudus has revealed that West Ham’s new manager, Graham Potter, has set high expectations after just three weeks at the helm.

Potter, who replaced Julen Lopetegui following a series of disappointing results, signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the club on January 9.

West Ham played out a 1-1 draw in their last encounter against Aston Villa.
“He demands a lot,” Kudus told SkySports.
“He’s only been here a short period of time but we can feel the energy as players.

“For me, it was the same with the old manager, they expect a lot, and the challenging part is replicating what he wants me to do in his system. I know we don’t have time, but this stuff does take time.

“The fans expect points straight away and we have to get wins, but settling into a new way of playing takes time.”
Despite his arrival, West Ham continue to struggle, managing just one win in their last four matches.

The Hammers travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their next Premier League encounter.

The one-week memorial for Teddy Osei, a founding member of the iconic Ghanaian music group Osibisa, will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at his family home in Chirapatre, Kumasi.

This traditional Ghanaian observance will honor the late saxophonist’s life, bringing together his family, close friends, and admirers from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Teddy Osei, renowned for his groundbreaking fusion of Afrobeat, rock, and jazz, played a pivotal role in Osibisa’s rise to international fame in the 1970s.

He passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at the age of 88.

Originally from Kumasi, Osei developed a passion for music early on and began playing the saxophone while attempting to form a band with his college friends in Sekondi.

His first group, “The Comets,” gained local success, recording with Philips West Africa and performing for radio programs.

In 1962, Teddy Osei moved to London to pursue further studies in music, with financial support from the Ghanaian government.

However, following political instability in Ghana, his government grant was revoked in 1966. Undeterred by this challenge, Osei continued to follow his musical passion, joining forces with talented musicians like Sol Amarfio and his brother Mac Tontoh to create Osibisa in 1969.

Osibisa’s groundbreaking sound and electrifying stage presence quickly gained global attention, solidifying their place as one of the most influential African bands of their time.

Kuami Eugene has hit back at his former Lynx Entertainment labelmates, DopeNation, following their recent remarks about his exit from the label.

This come after a recent comment from the twins on X (formerlly Twitter) social media about Kuami Eugene’s departure from Lynx Entertainment, where they cheekily referred to the so-called “Lynx curse,” suggesting that artists who leave the label struggle to maintain their careers.

This was in response to comments Kuami Eugene made in an interview, where he expressed relief after DopeNation’s exit.

Kuami Eugene responded by dismissing their remarks, calling them clout-chasing antics and suggesting that DopeNation was seeking attention to promote another “gym song.”

He emphasized that he would be focusing on releasing a high-quality song for his birthday, tailored for quality music listeners.

He questioned their relevance in the music scene, labeling their songs as nothing more than workout anthems.

He assured fans that once the song is out, he would address the ongoing drama and engage with DopeNation if that’s what they are after.

The ongoing back-and-forth has divided fans, with some backing Kuami Eugene while others are calling for a resolution between the two artists.

All eyes are now on his upcoming release and how the feud might evolve.

Journalist and entrepreneur Afua Asantewaa has reacted to the surprising news of 2Face Idibia and Annie Macaulay Idibia’s alleged divorce.

Their separation has stirred widespread discussions, given their history of ups and downs and public displays of affection.

Afua shared her shock, noting that many of 2Face’s timeless love songs were believed to have been inspired by Annie.

“2Face’s divorce comes as a shock to me because he penned so many love songs, and I always thought they were dedicated to Annie. Looking at their love and friendship journey, it’s hard to imagine this happening,” she said.

She also suggested that the challenges within their marriage may not be one-sided, contrary to the hot takes on social media blaming 2Face for what they describe as manipulation and insensitivity.

“Men go through a lot in marriage too. Maybe 2Face isn’t the type to speak about everything Annie does to him, but she often reacts to what he does, and it’s sad to see. For all we know, both of them have issues we aren’t privy to, and when the full story comes out, it might not be clear who’s at fault.”

Interestingly, she noted that the couple’s history of breaking up and reconciling leaves room for hope.
However, she agreed that irreconcilable differences is a strong ground for a split.

She concluded by urging fans to approach the situation with understanding and avoid making harsh judgments.

Ghana has been absent from the U-17 World Cup since 2017 and failed to qualify for the last U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, despite winning the competition in 2021. However, the team has secured a place in next year’s edition.

He explained that legislative proposals not completed during a president’s term are usually considered void once that administration ends.

Addressing concerns over the status of the bill, he stated, “No, there has been no change in our stance. The question now is whether we can simply sign and pass it into law. Would it be recognised as proper legislation, or might the process be challenged on the grounds that its validity expired with the previous Parliament?”

Former President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the bill be reintroduced as a government-sponsored bill rather than a Private Member’s Bill to allow for broader stakeholder consultations.

The Anti-Gay Bill, passed by Parliament in February 2024, criminalises LGBTQ acts and imposes penalties on those who engage in or promote such activities.

However, following its passage, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in a letter to the Clerk of Parliament, advised against transmitting the bill for presidential assent until ongoing legal challenges were resolved at the time.

The Supreme Court dismissed these legal challenges in December 2024, clearing the way for further legislative action on the controversial bill.

  • Apologise and let’s settle this amicably – Haruna Iddrisu to Emeafa Hardcastle after Annoh-Dompreh clash

Apologise and let’s settle this amicably – Haruna Iddrisu to Emeafa Hardcastle after Annoh-Dompreh clash

Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the Acting CEO of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, to issue a public apology and retract comments allegedly made against the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

The incident reportedly occurred during a short break in the vetting process for Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister-Designate for Defence. During this recess, a verbal exchange is said to have taken place between Hardcastle and the Minority Chief Whip.

As Frank Annoh-Dompreh was walking out of the room, Hardcastle allegedly made remarks including, “You are threatening me that you are taking me on because who are you? What do you mean by taking me on? You are a micro-minority. Doesn’t Afenyo-Markin himself use that phrase? I don’t have time for that. You think you can bully me here?”

In response, Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed his intention to confront Emeafa Hardcastle, highlighting concerns about the nature of their exchange and its possible consequences.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu criticized Hardcastle’s comments, describing them as harmful to Annoh-Dompreh’s reputation as an elected Member of Parliament.

He called for a public apology from Hardcastle, urging the Minority Chief Whip not to escalate the situation further.

“The justified request made by the Minority Whip regarding conduct infers damaging his reputation as an elected member of Parliament. Mr. Speaker, as I listened to him, we can only appeal to him that we share what the Hon. MP of Damongo said – that this house must stand united and unanimous in condemning the conduct and demanding an apology for it, but to persuade our colleague not to pursue it further, wanting this matter resolved at the Privileges Committee,” he stated.

Iddrisu emphasized that addressing the issue in Parliament would demonstrate to the public and non-MPs that the legislature has disciplinary authority, as outlined in Article 122 of the 1992 Constitution.

Comfort Doyoe, Leader of the Women’s Caucus in Parliament and First Deputy Majority Whip, also shared her views on the matter. She urged the Minority Chief Whip to withdraw his request to the Speaker to refer the case to the Privileges Committee, promising to handle the issue personally.

“Mr Speaker, as a leader of the women’s caucus in this Parliament, I will plead with the Chief Whip to leave the case to me. I am going to meet with the lady in question and advise her on how to handle issues. This is a case between a woman and a man.

“Mr Speaker, the woman has apologised already, so I am pleading with the Chief Whip to leave the matter to the women and me, as the head of the Women’s Caucus, to advise her on how to address issues when she is in our premises and Parliament,” she stated.

  • Interior Ministry declares curfew in Nkwanta Township

Interior Ministry declares curfew in Nkwanta Township

Ministry of the Interior has announced a curfew in Nkwanta Township, Oti Region, starting Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The curfew will run daily from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM and was introduced following advice from the Oti Regional Security Council to address security concerns.

A statement signed by the Ministry’s Chief Director, Doreen P. Annan, urged residents to remain calm and resolve disputes through appropriate channels.

The government also reminded the public of the ongoing ban on the possession of weapons, including arms and ammunition, within Nkwanta and nearby areas. Anyone caught violating this ban will face arrest and prosecution.

The curfew aims to protect lives and property while creating a peaceful environment for resolving conflicts.

The government reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.

The curfew follows renewed violence in Nkwanta, which began on January 16, resulting in three deaths and several injuries.

Fear has gripped the area as clashes have continued, with sporadic gunfire reported. Videos obtained by Citi News show gunshots and widespread property damage.

The conflict is believed to be tribal, involving the Challa and Adele on one side and the Achodes on the other.

The violence has displaced about 200 residents, forcing them to flee to nearby towns such as Pampawie, Ahamansu, and areas within the Kadjebi District, which has become a refuge for many.

Tamale: Gun battle between two youth groups injure 3

Three people were injured during a clash between two youth groups over a disputed piece of land in the Northern Region’s business district.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital confirmed that some individuals arrived on Tuesday morning with gunshot wounds.

Tensions began escalating on Monday night when one group claimed ownership of the land, removing barriers and materials from the site.

On Tuesday morning, the opposing group confronted them, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

The land’s ownership remains uncertain, but reports indicate it may be tied to influential members of the New Patriotic Party in the region.

An eyewitness told JoyNews that the clashes started the previous night.

“It was about 8 pm last night when some group came and said the land was for Samba so they are ceasing it. But someone told them it belonged to their brother. But instead of them moving away, they destroyed the cordon. We left, not knowing they slept in the market watching over the land,” the eyewitness recounted.

“This morning, another group came and said they will not allow them on the land, because it belongs to their brother leading to the clash,” he added.

He stated that two people sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, while a third person was accidentally run over by a vehicle.

“When it happened, they started shooting. Two people were hit by bullets, and the third guy was hiding behind a vehicle when it accidentally ran over him,” the eyewitness said.

The matter has since been reported to the Northern Regional Police for further investigation.

  • Diageo sells 80.4% shareholding in Guinness Ghana Breweries to Castel Group

Diageo sells 80.4% shareholding in Guinness Ghana Breweries to Castel Group

Diageo plc has announced the sale of its 80.4% stake in Guinness Ghana Breweries plc to Castel Group, further strengthening its partnership with Castel in Africa. The move aligns with Diageo’s strategy to build a flexible, asset-light beer operating model that promotes efficiency and profitability.

Despite the sale, Diageo will retain ownership of the Guinness brand and other Diageo brands currently produced by Guinness Ghana. These will now be licensed to Guinness Ghana under a long-term licensing and royalty agreement. Diageo, in collaboration with Castel, will continue to drive the brand and marketing strategy for Guinness in Ghana to ensure sustained growth and development.

Castel Group, which has extensive experience in West and Central Africa and is already a partner to Diageo in 11 other African markets, will take over operations of Guinness Ghana. All existing Diageo brands produced by Guinness Ghana, including Guinness, Malta, Orijin, Smirnoff Ice, Alvaro, and mainstream spirits, will continue to be produced under the new licensing arrangement.

This transaction follows a series of strategic moves by Diageo to refine its operations in Africa. In September 2024, the company sold its stake in Guinness Nigeria plc to Tolaram to boost growth in Nigeria. Prior to that, in October 2023, Diageo established a dedicated spirits company to enhance its premium spirits business in West Africa. Additionally, in July 2022, Diageo sold Guinness Cameroon to Castel.

Commenting on the sale, Dayalan Nayager, President of Diageo Africa and Chief Commercial Officer, said:
“Guinness Ghana is performing strongly powered by a fantastic team of people. Through this transaction, I look forward to the Guinness brand continuing to thrive and delivering further growth. I am excited to extend our partnership with Castel, a long-term partner in the region with a proven track record.”

Castel’s CEO, Gregory Clerc, expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating: “This acquisition exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit that drives Castel and marks a new milestone in our growth ambition. It reflects our ability to go where we are least expected, exploring new horizons on a continent full of opportunities. With this 22nd African country, we reaffirm our dynamism, our boldness, and our confidence in Africa’s potential.”

Guinness Ghana will remain listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange following the completion of the transaction, which is expected by the end of the year, pending regulatory approval.

  • This is the Barcelona return plan for Messi – David Beckham details

This is the Barcelona return plan for Messi – David Beckham details

David Beckham has revealed Lionel Messi’s Barcelona return plan, with Inter Miami resigned to losing the Argentine superstar at some stage.

The MLS outfit, who allowed Messi to go chasing the American dream in 2023, have their talismanic captain tied to a contract through 2025.

That deal includes the option for a 12-month extension that would take in the next World Cup finals, with Herons co-owner Jorge Mas having said of talks there: “Leo and I will sit down to discuss the future. I fully expect that when our new stadium opens in 2026, Leo Messi will be our number 10.”

Messi has, however, never hidden the fact that he intends to retrace steps to Barcelona once his record-setting career comes to a close. Beckham concedes that Florida will be bidding farewell to the Argentine GOAT, with the Manchester United legend saying at the Economic Forum in Davos:

“I would like Messi to live in Miami when he retires, but Leo told me that he only thinks about living near the Camp Nou. There is no player who loves Barcelona as much as he does. You can see the Barca crest on his leg and even on his water bottle.”

Messi still considers Catalunya to be home and wants to return to that part of the world with wife Antonela and their three sons once retirement is reached. He does, however, still have plenty to achieve in the United States prior to that.

Beckham added on working with Messi and Inter Miami’s ambitious plans: “I have always believed in potential. You know, the United States is a powerful country, one of the biggest countries with the best opportunities and you believe in that.

When I moved to the United States, I knew it was a land of opportunity. I knew I wanted to live in the United States at some point and create a business like the one we have done. Now I sit in my chair, in Miami, in that stadium and Leo walks onto the field and I think ‘I’m very proud of that’.”

Inter Miami are currently in pre-season action, as they line up against opponents from across the Americas, and Messi – who savoured MVP honours in MLS last season – is determined to add to his medal collection over the coming months.

Police arrest Belgian footballer Nainggolan in cocaine trafficking raid

Radja Nainggolan, the 36-year-old Belgian footballer, has been taken into custody in connection with a cocaine trafficking investigation.

He was among several individuals arrested by Belgian authorities on Monday morning following multiple raids across the nation.

“The investigation concerns alleged facts of importation of cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium,” the Brussels prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

No additional details have been provided to the public.

This arrest comes just six days after Radja Nainggolan returned from retirement to join Lokeren, a club in Belgium’s second division.

On his debut, he scored and helped his team secure a 1-1 draw at home against K. Lierse.

Born in Antwerp, Nainggolan spent most of his career playing in Italy, where he represented Roma and Inter Milan.

He also earned 30 caps for the Belgium national team between 2009 and 2018.

  • Man City warned to ready for heavy point reduction if found guilty in FFFP case

Man City warned to ready for heavy point reduction if found guilty in FFFP case

Manchester City has been warned that they could face a 40-point deduction in their Financial Fair Play (FFP) case, though relegation from the Premier League is not expected.

The club is currently facing over 115 charges related to alleged financial mismanagement. A hearing has already taken place, but a decision is still pending.

It is believed that City could receive penalties such as points deductions, transfer bans, or other sanctions, but their recent activity in the transfer market, including offering star striker Erling Haaland a new 10-year contract, suggests they won’t be relegated to the EFL anytime soon.

That is an opinion shared by Dr Rob Wilson, an economics professor at Sheffield Hallam University, with a leading expert in football finance telling Slingo of the long-running saga in Manchester: “I don’t expect them to get relegated. I think there’ll be a hefty points deduction, which I was guessing was going to be around 50, but that was when they were right at the top of the Premier League.

I think somewhere between 20 and 40 would probably be where they end up landing and probably a transfer embargo in the summer, which might explain why the January activity has been like it is.

“I expect them to get penalised but it’ll be a win for Man City and it’ll be a win for the Premier League because it’ll be the biggest points deduction they’ve ever had but it won’t be enough to really destabilise the football club.”

Dr Wilson added: “A transfer embargo I think is almost a guarantee because they have to provide some level of sporting sanction which then would explain why they’ve suddenly gone into the market and are signing potentially four players.. Well definitely bringing three in I think, aren’t they, potentially four so, yeah.

“The trend that the Premier League has gone with is to do it within the same season. That’s why we had that big foray with Everton, because they had two points deductions in the same season based on the two different PSR accounting periods.”

Manchester City, known for their historic title wins, are currently in fourth place in the Premier League. If they were to face a 40-point deduction, they would be left with only one point for the season and would fall to the bottom of the table, 16 points away from safety, with almost half of the season still remaining.

It was uncomfortable – Kyle Walker speaks on conversation with Pep before loan transfer

Kyle Walker has shared details of his conversation with Pep Guardiola before leaving Manchester City, admitting that it was a difficult talk.

Walker, who moved to AC Milan on loan during the January transfer window, explained that Guardiola had previously mentioned Walker’s request to leave the club in order to finish his career abroad. The full-back has now opened up about the challenging conversation that took place between him and the manager.

He told a press conference: “When I spoke with Pep, it wasn’t a very comfortable conversation – mainly because of the respect we have for each other. What he’s won at Manchester City, I’ve won it too. I like to think he knows what I bring to a dressing room, the atmosphere I create.

City was my family – from the cooks to the cleaners, the kit men and physios. I like to think I was liked and helped everyone blend in.

But things weren’t going well there and I wasn’t playing enough football. Hopefully I can play a bit more here.”

Walker is now hoping to add more titles to his collection at San Siro and says he would love to lift the European Cup with the Rossoneri. He added: “Obviously I spoke with Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), he explained lots of different things to me, he told me about the great things we’re trying to achieve here.

We talked about the Super Cup, which was a good start. It’s not perfect in terms of the league, but there’s still a chance in the Champions League. I hope to contribute with my experience and leadership and to help Milan return to where it wants to be. Winning the Champions League would be a dream come true: I have experienced it in a great final with City.”

Walker has taken the No. 32 shirt at Milan, in honour of David Beckham, and has already been spotted watching his new side alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He is expected to debut next month after all the paperwork relating to his transfer has been completed.

  • Chelsea loan Renato Veiga to Juventus; Danilo bids farewell to the club

Chelsea loan Renato Veiga to Juventus; Danilo bids farewell to the club

Juventus has announced the signing of Portugal defender Renato Veiga on loan from Chelsea until the end of the current season.

The 21-year-old joins the Serie A club after a tough start at Chelsea, where he only made one Premier League appearance this season.

Veiga had joined Chelsea from FC Basel in July for €14 million on a seven-year contract. He made his debut for the Portuguese national team in October 2023 and has since played in two additional international matches.

At Juventus, Veiga hopes to get more playing time, especially with the club struggling with defensive injuries.

Bremer and Juan Cabal are sidelined with ACL injuries, and Danilo, who had been part of the squad, left the club on Monday after reaching a mutual agreement. Juventus is currently fifth in Serie A, just two points behind Lazio, but significantly behind leaders Napoli.

“Dear Bianconeri, I don’t know where to start. I knew this day would come sooner or later, but one is never ready to say goodbye. I’ve spent five and a half years here, and for me, it became my life,” Danilo said on social media.

“It’s never easy to separate from a true love, from a place that has given me so much, from a shirt that’s brought so many great feelings, from a club whose values align those that I’ve shared throughout my career.”

The former Porto and Real Madrid player joined Juventus from Manchester City in 2019.

  • Neymar and Al Hilal part ways as move to Santos looms

Neymar and Al Hilal part ways as move to Santos looms

Al Hilal announced on Monday that they had reached a mutual agreement with Neymar to terminate his contract, paving the way for his return to his former club, Santos, in Brazil.

The Saudi Pro League club shared the news on social media, wishing Neymar success in his next chapter. According to ESPN, the Brazilian star is expected to sign a six-month deal with Santos, with an option to extend for another year.

Reports suggest the announcement and unveiling could take place later this week, either Thursday or Friday.

To make his move back to Santos possible, Neymar has agreed to forgo a large part of his remaining salary with Al Hilal. He is reportedly giving up between $25 million and $30 million of the $65 million he was due under his contract, which was originally set to run until next summer.

Neymar, now 32, had a challenging stint at Al Hilal. After his $97.6 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, his time in Saudi Arabia was marred by injuries.

Shortly after joining, he tore his ACL while playing for Brazil, and though he returned in October, a hamstring injury further limited his contributions. Earlier this month, Al Hilal’s manager, Jorge Jesus, confirmed that Neymar was free to explore other options.

With his move to Santos, Neymar is set to return to the club where he began his career, ready to restart in a familiar environment.

Neymar played seven matches for Al Hilal, scoring once in an AFC Champions League game. Despite struggles in Saudi Arabia, he remains a football icon, known for his success at Barcelona (2013-2017) with Messi and Suárez, winning multiple trophies, including a Champions League.

At PSG, he added five Ligue 1 titles and other domestic honors.

He began his career at Santos in 2009, helping them win the 2011 Copa Libertadores and recently earning promotion to Brazil’s top league in 2024. Internationally, Neymar is Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances and won Olympic gold in 2016.

Accra Sports Stadium Presidential entrance filled with trash, exposed electric cables others – Sources

Presidential entrance of the Accra Sports Stadium has turned into a dumping ground, just weeks ahead of Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad at home, but the facility, which hosted Ghana’s last competitive match, is in poor condition.

A visit by JoySports revealed that while the pitch is in good shape for games, other key areas of the stadium are far from presentable for officials, guests, and fans.

The pathway leading to the Presidential entrance is cluttered with discarded items such as broken fridges, faulty machines, damaged plastic chairs, tables, and other trash.

The situation worsens with the facility’s utilities. The water supply system is in a poor state, and the electricity room is no better. The room has no functioning lights, exposed wires are scattered around, and there’s even a small hole dug inside.

A room near the scoreboard is filled with dirt and has holes believed to be caused by rats. The overall structure of the stadium is also in poor shape, with visible cracks that suggest it is becoming weaker.

The condition of the washrooms is appalling, with a strong, unpleasant smell making them almost unusable.

Offices, including the Head of the Technical Department’s workspace, are in terrible shape. They have no electricity, broken ceilings, and cracked tiles.

The Ghana Project Monitoring Group (GPMG), an organization focused on highlighting neglected and faulty projects across the country, has expressed interest in working with the Sports Ministry to address the stadium’s poor maintenance and hygiene issues.

“Our motive is to draw the attention of the authorities and government that there’s something wrong here and what can we do,” member of GPMG Ernest Banama told JoySports.

“Not only drawing the attention, we use our own hands to start something and wait for the government to assist us.”

The Accra Sports Stadium, known as the Nation’s Wembley, underwent a massive facelift worth GH¢12.5 million for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2018.
