Put aside your political affiliations and work or risk dismissal – Agric Minister warns staff

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has cautioned employees within the ministry against engaging in partisan politics that could hinder progress.

Addressing staff from various directorates during his tour of the ministry’s departments and agencies on Monday, January 27, 2025, the minister emphasized the need for teamwork and a focus on national development

“The politics is over. You may belong to whichever party. At the end of the day, we’re talking about Ghana and how to govern our country. So let us hang our political jackets and mobilise all that we have.” He cautioned.

He further warned that “if you’re still in the political mood and you think everything is about politics, then you become an obstacle. And every obstacle must be cleared.

You can’t say because you do not belong to this party, you want to work to sabotage government. I will not entertain that.”

Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has urged staff to collaborate with the government to drive improvements in the country’s agricultural sector.

Accompanied by Chief Director Paul Siameh, the minister has embarked on a nationwide working tour of various departments and agencies under the ministry. The purpose of the tour is to engage with staff and better understand the challenges facing the sector.

His first visit was to the Plant Protection Regulatory Services Directorate in Pokuase, where he emphasized the need to harness the expertise of the Directorate to boost crop production. He expressed his commitment to reducing Ghana’s dependence on imported produce such as onions and tomatoes from neighboring countries.

Currently, Minister Opoku is engaging with personnel from key directorates, including the Statistics Research and Information Directorate (SRID), the Directorate of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES), and the Human Resource Directorate at Ghana House in Accra.

  • Ebi bright drags Tema Central MP to court over seat

Ebi bright drags Tema Central MP to court over seat

NDC parliamentary candidate for Tema Central, Ebi Bright, has filed a petition at the High Court to challenge Charles Forson’s election as the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

In her petition, Bright argues that the results which led to Forson’s declaration as the winner do not accurately reflect the true outcome of the election. She claims that irregularities were present in the results from three specific polling stations.

Bright further contends that the original pink sheets from these three polling stations, which were kept by the Electoral Commission, included the names and signatures of the presiding officers, but the copies provided to the NDC lacked these key details.

Additionally, she asserts that the votes recorded for the candidates on the original pink sheets do not match the total number of valid votes or overall votes tallied.

As a result, Bright is seeking for the court to invalidate the results from these three stations and reverse Forson’s declaration as the MP. She also wants the court to refer to earlier results, which excluded the disputed stations, where she was declared the winner. Alternatively, she is requesting that the court orders a re-run at the three polling stations.

In a related case, on January 4, 2025, an Accra High Court instructed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results from two remaining polling stations in the Tema Central constituency. This ruling followed mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates, urging the EC to fulfill its legal responsibilities.

Justice Forson Agyapong, who presided over the case, cited breaches of legal obligations and natural justice as grounds for the application. He emphasized that the EC is required to perform its duties fairly and in line with the law. In the case of Tema Central, the court found that the EC had unlawfully excluded results from two polling stations, clarifying that only the declaration by the returning officer is legally binding. The EC was thus instructed to complete the collation at its Accra regional office.

Following the court’s order, Charles Forson of the NPP was officially declared the winner of the parliamentary race, securing 18,870 votes to narrowly beat Ebi Bright, who received 18,815 votes. Independent candidate Frederick Aniagyei received 209 votes. The total valid votes cast stood at 37,894, with 144 rejected ballots, bringing the overall total votes to 38,038.

  • Petition filed; urges Mahama to remove EC Chair Jean Mensa

Petition filed; urges Mahama to remove EC Chair Jean Mensa

A petition has been filed requesting President John Mahama to remove the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, along with Deputy EC Chairs Samuel Tetteh and Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and EC member Dr. Peter Appiahene.

The petition which was filed on January 27, argues that these EC officials have violated fundamental human rights under Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution. It also accuses them of incompetence, bias, and actions that have damaged public trust in the Commission’s integrity, violating Articles 23 and 296 of the Constitution.

The petitioner, based in the Volta Region, pointed to the disenfranchisement of voters in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) areas during the 2020 parliamentary elections as a major violation of citizens’ rights. The petition claims that the SALL residents were denied representation in Parliament, which could have affected the balance of power in a hung parliament.

“For over four years, the people of SALL were deprived of their constitutional right to parliamentary representation, leaving them without a voice in the legislative process. Also, at the time of this deliberate exclusion, the parliamentary composition was a hung parliament. The SALL area’s parliamentary vote was pivotal and could have potentially given the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a majority.
By disenfranchising these voters, the EC acted in a manner that suggests partisan bias and an attempt to influence the balance of power in Parliament.”

Further allegations include what the petitioner described as poor management during the 2020 elections, with errors in presidential election results and claims of overt partisanship by certain commissioners.

“The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, in concert with her deputies, has demonstrated gross incompetence in the performance of her duties. Announcing such a critical decision (Exhibit A) on the eve of an election suggests poor management and a failure to anticipate the impact of the Guan District’s
    creation on electoral arrangements.”

The petitioner also referenced past comments and actions by Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Peter Appiahene, accusing them of compromising the EC’s impartiality.

“Dr. Bossman Asare, made numerous social media comments on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter before his appointment, displaying overt bias against the opposition party. These statements have raised questions about his impartiality and suitability for the role.”

The petition urges President Mahama to take action under Article 146 of the Constitution to restore public trust in the electoral process. It is backed by substantial evidence and exhibits to support the claims made. The Presidency has yet to comment on the issue.

Jean Mensa became the EC Chairperson on July 23, 2018, following the removal of her predecessor, Charlotte Osei. Since then, she has overseen two major elections.

This is not the first time Jean Mensa has faced such challenges. In August 2020, she successfully defended herself against a petition filed by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), which was dismissed by former President Akufo-Addo. The dismissal came after it was noted that although Mensa had not declared her assets at the time, she took the necessary steps to do so when the issue was raised.

Additionally, in August 2022, the Fix the Country Movement also submitted a petition to former President Akufo-Addo, concerning the electoral rights of residents in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) areas in the Oti Region.

“6th March demonstration loading” – Oliver Vormawor gives govt 3 months ultimatum to Stop Galamsey

Youth activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has announced plans for a “Stop Galamsey” protest on March 6, 2025.

This follows reports of illegal mining activities in the Tano Anwia forest. Barker-Vormawor expressed his outrage, stating that such actions should not be allowed in Ghana.

Through a series of social media posts, he warned the government that they have three months to put an end to these illegal mining operations.

His post read “Erastus Asare Donkor says as we speak, there are groups still inside the Tano Anwia forest reserve mining illegally and further degrading the forest. This pic was taken this morning!

“It’s been nearly 5months since we were arrested for protesting Galamsey. It seems to me that this existential threat must bring us back to the streets.”

He added that “These are people who are more likely than not operating with some of the over 2000 licenses issued by the former Regime.

“These licenses must be revoked! Our approach to irresponsible mining cannot include allowing people to do ‘legally’ the exact things they did ‘illegally.’ #StopGalamsey Demonstration now on 6th March. Notice served!”

The youth activist, who is also a legal practitioner, also stated that “President Dey Revoke Previous Appointments. All that is good. So why is he not also revoking the 2000 mining licenses Mampam gave his cronies.

“We cannot allow people to do legally the exact things they did illegally, under cover of shoddy licenses. The President has 3 months ultimatum exactly! 6th March Demonstration Loading.”

Antique Lemonade Arts foundation officially launches legacy blog website, Ghananipa

The Antique Lemonade Arts foundation on January 27, 2025 has officially launched a legacy blog website, Ghananipa.

The site is aimed at preserving the legacy of Ghanaian individuals (legends) whose contributions have shaped and left a lasting impact on their societies, families and communities.

While delivering the opening address at the launch which took place at Dyna Space inside The Signature Apartments at East-Legon, the Chair of the Antique Lemonade Arts Foundation, Franka-Maria Andoh, shared how the idea for the legacy platform was born.

She explained that it all started in April 2023 during one of their events, where both seasoned and upcoming creatives came together to share ideas.

Franka-Maria Andoh answers questions about the Ghananipa legacy blog

Through these interactions, they realized that information about some creative pioneers was scarce, and in some cases, there was little to no online presence about them.

Consequently, “We thought it was not right that it took such effort to find information on someone who had contributed greatly to the arts in Ghana during his lifetime. This I must say was the genesis of the Ghananipa project” Maria Andoh revealed.

Franka-Maria Andoh , the Chair of the Antique Lemonade Arts Foundation and other contributors pose for some pictures during the launch

About Ghananipa and the way forward

The Ghananipa platform provides in-depth profiles and a user-friendly archive that lets visitors explore and discover  the inspiring journeys of Ghana’s cultural icons, overlooked contributors, and several other influential thinkers.

The site will tell the stories of these heroes through pictures,  articles, interviews, and more.

It would not only focus on common and popular figures such as Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Asamoah Gyan, the likes of Theodosia-Okah among others but will be open to contributions from ordinary people who wish to tell their stories or stories of friends and relatives who are  still in their various capacities using their gifts to make a difference and changing lives.

“The unique thing about Ghananipa is that our focus is not necessarily on the well-known and popular Ghanaian, we are interested, probably even more so, in documenting regular folk who made and are still making a difference in their communities and families.

Ever since we embarked on this project, brochures kept popping up”.
Ghananipa provides the public with an opportunity to highlight the heroic contributions of individuals in society.

“It is a fluid project, and we are open to comments, corrections, additions and most importantly contributions” Franka-Maria Andoh stressed.

A big hole, there is no future for the local league – Sulley Muntari’s verdict on GPL

Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has criticized the Ghana Premier League, calling it “a mess.”

Muntari, who played for Liberty Professionals in 2000 before moving abroad, returned to Ghana to end his successful career with Hearts of Oak in the second half of the 2021/22 season.

The 40-year-old helped Hearts win the President’s Cup and the MTN FA Cup but chose not to renew his contract.

The former Inter and AC Milan star described the local league as being in “a big hole” with “no future.”

“Hearts fans and the president were amazing,” He said in an interview with 3Sports.

“The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league.

“I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody.”

The current Premier League in Ghana has no main sponsor or official broadcaster.

Sulley Muntari previously played for English clubs Portsmouth and Sunderland.

The 2010 Champions League winner represented Ghana from 2002 to 2014 and played an important role in the team’s qualification for the World Cup in 2006 (Germany), 2010 (South Africa), and 2014 (Brazil).

In an interview with JD Football, Kudus, who previously played for Nordsjaelland, said Kamaldeen has everything needed to be a top winger.

“I will say Kamaldeen Sulemana from Southampton. I just think that he has all the qualities that a winger needs. He is fast, skilful, can score, and he is very productive. Yeah, I will go for him,” he said.

  • Kanye West reclaims title as wealthiest rapper, surpassing JAY-Z

Kanye West reclaims title as wealthiest rapper, surpassing JAY-Z

Kanye West has reportedly reclaimed the title of the richest rapper, surpassing JAY-Z with an impressive net worth of $2.77 billion.

This comes from Eton Venture Services, a business valuation firm, which credits West’s financial comeback to his music assets and full ownership of the Yeezy brand.

On Thursday, 23 January, the music and fashion icon shared the news via an Instagram post, writing, “LAA LA LA LA,” in what appeared to be a celebratory jab at his critics.

If the reported numbers are correct, Kanye West’s net worth has surpassed JAY-Z’s, who is currently valued at $2.5 billion according to Forbes. The two, who once worked together on the popular Watch the Throne album, are the only rappers to reach the billion-dollar milestone.

Earlier reports that Dr. Dre and Diddy had also become billionaires have since been disproven.

Kanye’s return to billionaire status follows a challenging period. In 2022, his wealth dropped significantly after Adidas ended their profitable partnership with him due to his controversial antisemitic remarks.

Before the split, Forbes had estimated the partnership added $1.5 billion to his fortune, which was then around $2 billion. Afterward, his net worth fell to an estimated $400 million.

West later opened up about the financial strain he endured following the partnership’s collapse. Speaking to TMZ in 2024, he admitted, “I’m gonna be honest with y’all: I was two months from going bankrupt, really… And we survived. We survived through the cancellation.”

Despite facing challenges, Kanye kept ownership of the Yeezy brand and now runs it independently. The brand’s recent success, including making millions in sales from a single clothing release, has been key to his financial recovery.

Meanwhile, 50 Cent is aiming for billionaire status. The rapper and businessman claimed last year that he is close to becoming a billionaire, thanks to his successful media and spirits ventures.

The split between Kanye and Adidas was costly for the German company, which estimated a loss of about $246 million in 2022 due to the separation. However, it allowed Kanye to fully take charge of Yeezy, which has since shown strong growth and profitability.

  • Diddy files $50 million defamation lawsuit against Courtney Burgess, others

Diddy files $50 million defamation lawsuit against Courtney Burgess, others

Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs has filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against music manager Courtney Burgess, her lawyer Ariel Mitchell, and Nexstar Media Inc., the parent company of NewsNation.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, claims that Burgess made false accusations against Combs, which Mitchell supported and NewsNation reported.

In late 2024, after testifying before a grand jury, Burgess appeared on NewsNation and stated that she had almost a dozen flash drives containing explicit videos allegedly linked to Combs. She claimed the videos showed male and female celebrities, as well as minors, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Mitchell supported her client’s accusations during interviews, claiming that one of the men in the footage is “more high-profile” than Combs. “I can verify that it exists — that it’s real and that the other person in the video is very visible,” she stated.

In his complaint, Combs refutes these claims, alleging that Burgess “falsely asserted he possessed videos of [Combs] engaged in the sexual assault of celebrities and minors.”

The lawsuit claims that Burgess repeatedly shared these accusations with various media outlets, including NewsNation, which, according to the complaint, irresponsibly presented the false claims as if they were true.

It also accuses Mitchell of either knowingly spreading false information or being careless by not checking whether her client’s claims were true.

“Because no such tapes exist, and because Mitchell never saw any video depicting [Combs] sexually abusing anyone, her statements were either blatant falsehoods or the result of a reckless disregard for the truth,” the filing read.

According to the lawsuit, the actions of Burgess, Mitchell, and NewsNation have caused “profound reputational and economic harm” to Combs, as well as prejudiced his ability to receive a fair trial.

Hajia4Reall’s lawyers request passport to facilitate self-deportation

Lawyers for Ghanaian influencer Mona Faiz Montrage, who is currently in prison, have asked the US government to return her passport.

In a letter to Judge J. Paul Oetken, her legal team requested the passport to help with her return to Ghana.

“We represent Ms. Mona Montrage in this case and, with the government’s consent, we respectfully ask for the release of her passport, which was handed over to Pretrial Services when she was arrested,” part of the letter stated.

The request follows a court ruling that says her passport should be given back after she completes her sentence. According to the plan, US Marshals will take her from prison to the airport, where she will board a direct flight to Ghana without stopping in any US city.

Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia4Reall, was charged with six crimes for her role in romance scams and money laundering.

She was sent from the UK to the US for being involved in a $2 million scam that targeted older, single Americans. The 30-year-old musician and businesswoman first appeared in a federal court in Manhattan on May 15, 2022.

Court records showed that Hajia4Reall managed five foreign bank accounts, receiving money from over forty victims. She used fake business names across three banks in the Bronx, New York.

She admitted to conspiring to receive stolen money, which was one of seven charges, including attempted fraud and money laundering. Her guilty plea could result in up to five years in prison.

Instead of repaying the stolen money, the court allowed her to give up properties worth $2,164,758.41 as part of her punishment.

Man City no longer scares teams like we used to – Pep on team’s current form

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes that teams are now more confident in facing his side compared to before, which could put their Champions League hopes at risk if he doesn’t find a solution.

Guardiola, whose team will play Chelsea at home on Saturday, did not directly say that City had completely lost their ‘fear factor.’

However, as he reflected on their difficult season, he pointed out that opponents are no longer as intimidated as they used to be and are now pressing City more aggressively.

Manchester City are currently in fifth place in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by 12 points. Towards the end of 2024, they struggled, winning just one of their last 13 matches.

After their recent loss to Paris St-Germain, City now need to defeat Club Brugge on Wednesday to secure a spot in the Champions League play-offs.

“Everyone came to the Etihad and stayed back,” he said. “The first team I saw man-marking was Neil Warnock at Cardiff. Now everyone does it. Everyone comes here, it doesn’t matter, man to man.

“They just jump to Ederson or Stefan [Ortega]. You have to adapt, do it better with the ball, otherwise you are not qualifying for the Champions League.”

Pep Guardiola Photo Courtesy: Man City

Even though City have £123 million worth of new players ready for their Premier League match against Chelsea, Guardiola doesn’t think that will fix all their problems.

He brushed aside claims that running statistics show how well a team is performing. Instead, he believes the real issue is that his team hasn’t been using the ball effectively.

Speed is important but against PSG we ran more than them,” he said. “Our problem is with the ball. This season it is what we have missed.

Desire Doue in action against Man City Photo Courtesy: AP

“If you have the ball and don’t pass properly to your mate, everything is so difficult.”

When City won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend of the season, few would have predicted by the time the return meeting came around that Chelsea would be higher in the table and Guardiola’s team would be just a point in front of Bournemouth.

Liberian footballer Amara Kamara passes away while traveling to Ghana for medical care

Liberian footballer Amara Kamara has sadly passed away while on his way to Ghana for surgery following an injury he sustained during a Division One League match.

Kamara and his family were travelling to Ghana for medical treatment after he was diagnosed of a spinal cord injury.

However, upon reaching Ivory Coast, the 17-year-old died, leaving Liberia football in a state of mourning.

“It is with immense sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved player, Amara Kamara, who tragically departed from us in Ivory Coast while being transported to Ghana for advanced medical care,” a statement from the club’s secretary George Elliot read.

“Kamara was not just a player but a family member, a role model, and an embodiment of the Blackman Warriors spirit. His dedication to the club and his love for the game inspired us all. His loss leaves a void that will never be filled. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, teammates, friends, and the entire Blackman Warrior community.”

The teen sensation, who plays for Blackman Warriors FC collapsed moments after scoring in their 3-3 draw against Bea Mountains on January 8, 2025.

He was rushed to two hospitals before later sent to the St Joseph’s Hospital, where he was diagnosed of the spinal cord problem which needed surgery.

However, the hospitals in Liberia were not equipped to perform the procedure, leading to a decision to transport him to Ghana for treatment.

The club and his family tried to arrange a flight for his travel to Ghana but that failed and were forced to travel via an ambulance.

“Our club’s CEO requested a transfer to the Catholic Hospital for more specialized care after Kamara’s diagnosis at JFK. We hired Dr. Alvin N. Doe, who cut short his vacation abroad to attend to Kamara,” Nelson Meanyeah, the club president disclosed.

“When Dr. Doe arrived and assessed the situation, he determined that Liberia lacked the necessary equipment for the surgery. He recommended transferring Kamara to Ghana, where the required medical attention could be provided.”

“We were told that only Asky Airlines had an airbed mattress for disabled passengers,” Meanyeah added.

“Despite filling out the necessary forms, we faced delays and were eventually told that no space was available on the flight.”

‘It will go with me to my grave’ – Muntaka vows to keep secret NPP MP who joined NDC to elect Bagbin

Interior Minister-designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has promised never to reveal the identity of the NPP MP who voted with the NDC MPs to elect Bagbin as Speaker for the 8th Parliament.

The Asawase MP stated that the identity of the NPP MP would remain a secret for as long as he lives.

When asked about it by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on Friday, Muntaka firmly stated that no one, including the security agencies, would ever discover who the MP was that went against the Majority Caucus of the 8th Parliament.

When Afenyo-Markin challenged the lawmaker to say he has information about the MP, Muntaka replied: “You don’t know, it’s not true. You can only guess, you can’t say you know.”

“Everybody in this country has done everything humanly possible to know including the security agencies I believe, to know which of the NPP MPs supported us to elect Mr Speaker.

“I work with people and I have vowed that not even my wife will know this; I will die with it and I meant it,” he said on January 24, 2025.

Muntaka made this statement after Afenyo-Markin questioned him about his commitment to keeping certain security matters confidential if he is confirmed as the Interior Minister.

In the 8th Parliament, both the Majority and Minority caucuses had 136 MPs each, which made it challenging to elect a Speaker. However, during the voting, the NDC managed to secure 137 votes, allowing their candidate, Alban Bagbin, to become Speaker. This indicated that one NPP MP, who was part of the Majority at the time, voted with the NDC to elect Bagbin.

The identity of that NPP MP has remained a mystery, and Muntaka, who was the Chief Whip at the time, has vowed to keep it a secret for the rest of his life.

CEO of Ghana Music Awards-USA to run in next NDC primaries for Ho Central

CEO of Ghana Music Awards-USA, also known as Don D, Dennis Boafo, has revealed plans to run for the 2028 NDC parliamentary primaries for Ho Central.

Don D has made a name for himself in the music industry by successfully organizing five awards events in the United States, supporting Ghanaian music in the diaspora.

In an exclusive interview with Tony Best on Akoma Mmre on Akoma FM, he shared his belief that he can help improve Ghana’s creative industry by entering politics. He emphasized that his decision to run is not motivated by financial gain, noting that the salary of a Ghanaian parliamentarian is minimal.

“My goal in politics isn’t about the perks, but about using the parliamentary platform to make Ghana’s music and creative arts more appealing,” he said.

If Dennis Boafo goes ahead with his plans, he will face strong competition from the current MP, Edem Kofi Kpotosu

“I am doing well as a person, I am running GMA USA, and I’m doing well. People may be quick to say I’m going into politics because of money. How much is the salary of a parliamentarian in Ghana? Its peanut.

“My decision to venture into politics has nothing to do with the perceived entitlement that comes with it. I aim to leverage on platform of parliament and make Ghana’s music and creative arts at large attractive,” he said.

Should Dennis Boafo carry on with his aspiration, he will draw a fierce contest with incumbent MP, Edem Kofi Kpotosu.

Kwabena Kwabena criticizes NPP for how they have treated him

Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has shared his disappointment with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying they have not treated him fairly over the years.

He explained that despite composing and producing a song for the party, they have not shown him much appreciation.

Kwabena Kwabena also claimed that the NPP continues to use the song without his permission for different activities, making it seem like he still supports them.

He further accused the party of changing parts of the song to fit their political message without asking for his approval.

“I don’t like to talk about certain things. The NPP has taken me for a ride for a very long time. They did that again; without my consent, they took the music, they didn’t even contact me, and they went to the studio themselves and cut it to suit their purpose without my consent,” he stated in an interview with OKAY FM.

He added, “When they were done, they didn’t tell me anything, and so people still think I’m NPP because of what they do.”

Kwabena Kwabena, a well-known supporter and campaigner for the NPP, has criticized the party for what he sees as poor governance during their time in power.

He also spoke about the challenges he faced working with political parties, especially when it came to creating campaign songs.

In a 2024 interview, his manager, Nana Poku Ashis, revealed that after Kwabena Kwabena composed a campaign song for the NPP in 2016, some people collected money on his behalf without his knowledge or permission.

Ashis explained that Kwabena Kwabena thought he had made the song for free, but NPP officials wrongly believed they had paid him.

He further stated that some of the singer’s friends, who were also NPP members, took the money, claiming it was meant for Kwabena Kwabena.

VAR to be implemented in Ghana next season – GFA’s Alex Kortey confirms

The Referee Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotey, has announced that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be introduced in the Ghana Premier League next season.

According to Kotey, referees will undergo a three-month training program to help them understand how to use the technology before it is officially put into use.

He added that FIFA’s plan is to roll out the VAR system at the start of the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season.

“We want to start next season somewhere in August or September. We have two or three months to train.

That is the plan from FIFA. We can do it in less than three months if our people can catch it fast,” he said.

Reports suggest that Alex Kotey and FIFA-certified VAR referee Daniel Laryea will be in charge of training the referees.

In addition, the league’s official broadcaster will also receive special training from FIFA experts to get ready for the introduction of VAR in the 2025/26 season.

  • Arteta confirms Arsenal “actively seeking” to sign a striker

Arteta confirms Arsenal “actively seeking” to sign a striker

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that the club is “actively looking” to sign a striker in the January transfer window who can “make an impact” on the team.

The Gunners have struggled with a shortage of attacking players after Bukayo Saka suffered a long-term hamstring injury and striker Gabriel Jesus was ruled out with an ACL injury.

Arsenal is aiming to win the Premier League for the third consecutive season, but injuries to key players and inconsistent performances have left them six points behind Liverpool, who also have a game in hand.

In addition to their league struggles, Arsenal were eliminated from the FA Cup by Manchester United and are currently trailing Newcastle 2-0 after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. In both matches, Arsenal missed several clear chances to score.

“My opinion is clear that we lost two very very important players, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. So we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the frontline, it’s clear,” Arteta said.

“It is clear that in the period that we lost them, ideally we need some help. We were short already and now we are even shorter. The team still copes with that.”

However, he said he would only do “what is right for the club” and is “actively looking” to “get the right player”.

“Any player, no,” he added. “[It has to be] someone that makes us better and has an impact in the team.”

Arsenal have been linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and also Wolves forward Matheus Cunha but Arteta, who did not comment on either player in his pre-match news conference said it’s not a certainty that Arsenal will be able to complete a deal for a forward.

“It doesn’t just depend on Arsenal, on Mikel or our will. It depends on the market and a lot of different factors.” Arteta added.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said after the win over north London rivals Tottenham that he would not be “surprised” if Arsenal do try to sign a striker in this window, but Arteta said his players haven’t said to him that they feel like they need someone to come in.

“We have all been there, we all look at each other.” Arteta said.

“We have very, very short numbers for many, many weeks and they recognise the situation, we all do.”

However, the Arsenal boss did say that he does sometimes speak to his players about potential signings, especially if they have played together before, to get an insight into their characters.

“That’s getting us away from the computer and what the data is saying and it is real,” said the Spaniard.

“I have seen it, I sense it. A player can score a lot of goals, great. How does this player react when he hasn’t scored for six or seven games?

“This is what I am interested in. Watch an interview with a player who hasn’t scored for six games, and then what kind of goals does he score?

“Against which teams in which context? Is it first half or second half? Is it only with his right foot, only headers, only in open spaces? Does he like the physical contact of this league?

“There are a lot of things. So when you have a player that has spent a lot of days with him, that is really valuable information to have.”

Julian Nagelsmann signs contract extension with Germany until Euro 2028

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has signed a contract extension that will keep him in his post until the 2028 European Championship tournament, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Friday.

Nagelsmann, who took over in September 2023, led the Germans to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 on home soil.

His initial contract ran until the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

A former Bayern Munich coach, Nagelsmann was Germany’s second youngest coach ever when he took over at the age of 36.

“When I came to the DFB in September 2023, I could not have imagined being a national coach beyond the home Euro,” Nagelsmann said in a statement.

“This great feedback that we all receive every day, shows us that our journey together is on the right path. We want to win titles together,” he said.

  • Kofi Adams calls for parliamentary probe into Ghana’s spending on 2023 African Games

Kofi Adams calls for parliamentary probe into Ghana’s spending on 2023 African Games

Minister-Designate for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has promised that Parliament will carefully review the money spent on hosting the 2023 African Games in Ghana.

Ghana hosted the 13th edition of the African Games in 2024, but the amount of money the government spent caused a lot of debate.

The former Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, faced criticism from the public over the reported $245 million used for the event.

This included $195 million for building facilities, $15 million for feeding athletes during the 15-day event, and $48 million for other operational expenses.

The Local Organising Committee defended the spending, saying it was necessary to make the event successful.

Speaking to the media at the Accra Sports Stadium, Kofi Adams assured that the investigation would be done properly to ensure transparency and accountability.

“I remember in Parliament, issues were raised about it. The only unfortunate thing is that we couldn’t take the report of the committee that looked into areas of sports before the 8th Parliament was dissolved.

“But the 9th Parliament is back, and we can see what we can do about that report—whether it will be retabled or the issues will be referred to the committee again for review and resubmission for consideration.

“So, we are not ruling out anything. But let’s go through the processes first, and then we’ll see what they look into and what will come out of it,” Adams said.

Kofi Adams stated that the investigation will reveal important details about the spending.

He is currently waiting for Parliament to approve his nomination after his vetting. Once confirmed, he will take on the role and work to promote transparency in the country’s sports management.

Zambia officially announces Nora Häuptle as Copper Queens head coach

Football Association of Zambia has officially named Nora Häuptle as the new head coach of the Copper Queens after she parted ways with Ghana’s Black Queens.

The announcement was made on Friday at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel, where the Swiss coach signed a three-year deal to take charge of Zambia’s women’s national team. She takes over from Bruce Mwape, the former coach.

Nora decided not to extend her contract with Ghana after completing her two-year term, which led to her exit.

Nora Häuptle’s main goal now is to prepare Zambia for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place in July.

Her first task is to get the team ready by planning a series of friendly matches to help them improve.

Interestingly, Zambia had previously knocked out Häuptle’s former team, Ghana’s Black Queens, in the qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games after a two-legged match.

After Häuptle left, the Ghana Football Association appointed Kim Lars Bjorkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens.

“I would go for him” – Michael Essien’s response to comparison with Partey

Ghanaian football legend Michael Essien has made a surprising statement, saying that if he had to choose, he would pick Thomas Partey over himself at their best playing years.

Essien, who played for Ghana in the 2006 and 2014 World Cups held in Germany and Brazil, is considered one of the country’s greatest footballers.

During his career, he achieved major success with Chelsea, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Essien praised Partey’s outstanding skills and admitted that he would prefer the Arsenal midfielder over himself in his prime.

“Between myself and Thomas Partey in our primes, I don’t think I would pick myself. I would go for Partey. He is a fantastic midfielder, you know,” Essien stated.

“I will never put myself ahead of Thomas Partey. It is two different generations, so I will put Partey ahead. He is that guy I love and I speak to him now and then,” he added.

Thomas Partey started his professional football journey with Atlético Madrid in 2015 and soon established himself as one of the top defensive midfielders of his time. During his spell at the club, he won major trophies, including La Liga, the UEFA Europa League, and the UEFA Super Cup.

His outstanding performances earned him a €50 million transfer to Arsenal in 2020.

Since joining the English club, the 31-year-old has been an important part of the team, playing over 100 Premier League matches and helping them win the FA Community Shield.

  • CAF disqualifies Congo from 2024 CHAN over player eligibility issue

CAF disqualifies Congo from 2024 CHAN over player eligibility issue

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly banned Congo from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be held in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda this August.

While CAF has not made an official announcement yet, reports indicate that Congo was disqualified because they used an ineligible player during their qualifying matches against Equatorial Guinea.

The issue revolves around Mankou Nguembete Japhet Eloi, who is said to have played for Leones Vegetarianos, a club in Equatorial Guinea.

This goes against CHAN rules, which state that only players from local clubs in their own country can take part in the tournament.

Additionally, Congo is also accused of failing to submit the required national licenses, which are essential for participating in the competition.

Equatorial Guinea, which was originally knocked out by Congo, has now been brought back into the tournament. They will join Group D, where they will compete against the current champions, Senegal, along with Sudan and Nigeria.

Besides being disqualified, Congo’s football association has also been fined $10,000 by CAF. They have been given 60 days to pay the fine.

  • Otto Addo has lost the dressing room completely – Saddick Adams explains how

Otto Addo has lost the dressing room completely – Saddick Adams explains how

Black Stars coach Otto Addo is said to have had disagreements with some key players in the team over strict rules he has introduced, according to top sports journalist Saddick Adams.

Saddick Adams explained that Otto Addo’s efforts to bring discipline to the team may have upset some players who are not happy with his new regulations.

The journalist, also known as Sports Obama, revealed that rules like mandatory breakfast, fines for lateness, and publicly scolding players are some of the measures Otto Addo has put in place, which have not been well received by the team.

Additionally, some players feel that playing for the national team affects their club performance, as they struggle to regain their form after national duties.

“Otto Addo has lost the dressing room. One player told me that Otto Addo introduced some quite unpopular things among the playing body.

“He has introduced compulsory breakfast, which is a norm at the club level. He also instituted fines for lateness. One player told me that they were late for a meeting and he scolded them in front of the players.

“Otto Addo has lost all the key players except for just two. He has lost most of them. Due to some of the issues he took during the qualifiers, he lost some of the players.

“The real issue is that some of the players believe that it takes them about five games to recover their form whenever they come to play for the country. There is a toxic environment in the team,” he said this on the ABN Sports segment.

Saddick Adams’ comments come as it has been confirmed that Otto Addo will continue as the head coach of the Black Stars.

Dr. Randy Abbey, chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, has stated that the GFA will keep Otto Addo as head coach but will replace the assistant coaches.

“We think the GFA has made its decision already,” Abbey told Original FM.

“The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Right now, the focus is on the World Cup qualifiers. We will be ensuring that we reverse the poor trend of results that led to the team’s failure to qualify for AFCON. We need to change course and put the Black Stars back on the winning path,” he earlier said.

  • We will head to ECOWAS Court after March if Ahmed Suale’s murder case isn’t resolved –  GJA

We will head to ECOWAS Court after March if Ahmed Suale’s murder case isn’t resolved –  GJA

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has announced its intention to take the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

This decision stems from prolonged delays in the investigation, arrests, and prosecution of those responsible for the crime.

In a speech delivered by the Association’s President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, on January 22, during a news conference at the Ghana International Press Centre, the GJA addressed critical media issues that require urgent redress in 2025.

Mr Dwumfuor revealed the Association’s plans to seek redress in international courts “given the fast-eroding trust and confidence in the Police regarding the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of suspects involved in the murder of Ahmed Suale.”

Dwumfuor criticized the Ghana Police Service for its “lackadaisical investigations” into the murder, which occurred almost six years ago. Ahmed Suale was killed near his family home in Madina, a suburb of Accra, on January 16, 2019.

The GJA has given the Police up to March 2025 to provide the public with concrete updates on the investigation. The Association also urged the President and Attorney General to take a keen interest in the case.

“You may recall the shocking disclosure made by the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in February 2024, that his office had not received from the Police any docket fit for prosecution or action on the murder of Ahmed Suale.

First, we are giving the Ghana Police Service up to the end of March 2025 to come out with something concrete on the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of suspects in the murder case. We urge the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate, and the President to take a keen interest in this case,” Dwumfuor stated.

Threatening to seek redress in the ECOWAS Court is one of several steps the GJA is taking to find justice for Ahmed Suale. Among its initiatives, the Association plans to hold press conferences at the end of February and March 2025 to update the public on the case.

The GJA also intends to brief international partners, including diplomatic missions, the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). According to Dwumfuor, these partners have expressed significant interest in the case and are prepared to escalate the matter internationally if necessary. Notably, the FAJ’s recent meeting in Rwanda prominently discussed Ahmed Suale’s murder.

Meanwhile, various institutions and individuals have expressed concerns about the delay in solving the case. The most recent voice is that of the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus.

He announced that he had provided information about the suspected killers to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and threatened to publicly reveal the suspect’s name if the Police fail to update the public soon.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was a key member of Tiger Eye PI, an undercover investigative journalism team led by Anas Aremeyaw Anas. He was tragically murdered on January 16, 2019, near his residence in Madina, Accra, by unknown gunmen.

His killing followed the release of the investigative piece titled “Number 12,” which exposed corruption in Ghanaian football. This investigation had significant repercussions, including the resignation of the Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, and the suspension of several referees and officials.

Invest in cannabis cultivation to generate $1bn annually  – Chamber of Cannabis Industry to govt

The Chamber of Cannabis Industry has urged the government to invest in the cannabis sector, highlighting its lucrative potential to generate substantial revenue. This call for investment aligns with the government’s reset agenda and aims to diversify Ghana’s cash crops, ultimately supporting the nation’s economy.

Speaking at the launch of the Chamber of Cannabis Training Centre and Sky Bridge Pharmaceuticals in Accra on January 21, Dr. Mark Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber, emphasized that Ghana boasts one of the best climates globally for cultivating cannabis. He revealed that the global cannabis market, valued at $50 billion, offers Ghana an opportunity to generate up to $1 billion annually.

“One can make no less than $10,000 from just one hectare of cannabis. This is a $50 billion industry. If Ghana is able to generate at least $1 billion annually from cannabis, you can imagine what that could do for our country. Cannabis has the potential to reset Ghana’s economy,” he said.

Dr. Darko also encouraged the government to explore cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes, following the approval of the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023, which permits industrial cannabis cultivation. He pointed out that medicinal cannabis is vital for the sector’s growth, citing its benefits in managing chronic pain, treating epilepsy, and addressing other health conditions.

“The United States recorded over $11 billion in medicinal cannabis revenue in 2021, and that figure is set to more than double by 2025. Europe, projected to become the largest medicinal cannabis market in the world, is expected to reach $45 billion within the next five years,” he said.

In addition to this, Dr. Darko highlighted the role of the Chamber’s Training Centre, supported by Sky Bridge Pharmaceuticals, in equipping farmers and processors with sustainable cultivation and processing techniques for cannabis and hemp. The Centre will also encourage research and innovation to create products for global markets while promoting ethical practices.

Dr. Samuel Twumasi, Group CEO of Sky Bridge Group, elaborated on their investment in the cannabis sector, aiming to produce high-quality, cannabis-based medicines that meet international standards. He urged the government to expedite the approval of fees and charges for cannabis cultivation licenses to foster further investment in the sector.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana, is a herbal medicine derived from Cannabis plants. It is used to treat a variety of symptoms and conditions, including cancer, chronic pain, and mental disorders.

According to Allied Market Research, the global cannabis market was valued at $25.7 billion in 2021 and is expected to grow to $148.9 billion by 2031.

Gov’t supports Kantamanto Market fire victims with GH₵1m

The government has donated GHS1 million to help victims of the fire that destroyed the Kantamanto Market in Accra on January 2, 2025.

This donation fulfills a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama when leaders of the Kantamanto Traders Association, made up of 13 groups, met him after he took office.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah handed over the money on behalf of the President and assured the traders that the government is committed to rebuilding the market into a modern facility that will improve business and safety.

He also sympathized with the traders for their losses and called for cooperation in redesigning the market to improve security and emergency access.

Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, thanked the government for its support on behalf of the affected traders.

He described the extent of the damage, saying that more than half of the market was destroyed, along with large amounts of money and goods worth millions of dollars.

He also revealed that the association secured a $100 million loan from Access Bank to rebuild the market but urged the government to help resolve land disputes that could delay the project.

The event was attended by Deputy Chiefs of Staff Stanislav Dogbe and Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, the President’s Legal Advisor Marietta Brew Oppong, and other government officials.

The fire on January 2 destroyed over 7,000 shops and left nearly 30,000 traders struggling financially.

Kyle Walker set to move to AC Milan on a loan deal from Man City – Sources

Kyle Walker is set to leave Manchester City and join AC Milan after both clubs reached an agreement, according to ESPN sources.

The 34-year-old England defender will move to Milan on loan until the end of the season. The deal includes an option for Milan to sign him permanently in the summer, but they are not required to do so. Walker is currently under contract with City until 2026.

He is expected to arrive in Milan on Thursday to finalize the transfer.

Walker’s move means Milan will no longer pursue Marcus Rashford. The Italian club was interested in signing him, but Serie A rules on non-EU players have made the deal impossible.

Walker has not played for City since their 4-1 victory over West Ham on January 4.

Walker has not played for City since informing the club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, that he wanted to leave during the January transfer window. As a result, manager Pep Guardiola left him out of the squad.

His departure leaves Guardiola with limited options at right-back. Rico Lewis is available for the position, and midfielder Matheus Nunes has also filled in when needed.

This month, City signed two young defenders—20-year-old Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and 19-year-old Vitor Reis from Palmeiras—to strengthen their squad.

Walker, who served as City’s captain, leaves the club after winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League, having joined from Tottenham in 2017.

Raphinha, Vinícius Júnior ecstatic about Neymar’s return to Santos

Raphinha and Vinícius Júnior are excited about Neymar’s possible return to Brazil, as the Al Hilal star considers rejoining his former club Santos in January.

According to ESPN, Neymar wants to end his contract with the Saudi Pro League team and move back to Santos.

The Brazilian forward, who is also being pursued by several MLS clubs, will become a free agent in July.

Asked about Neymar’s future, fellow Brazil international and Barcelona star Raphinha told TNT Sports Brasil, as reported on Globoesporte: “I think him returning to compete at a high level, and in my opinion the Brazilian [league] is at a high level, will be good not only for him, but for everyone.”

Vinícius said he believes Santos would be the right place for Neymar to rediscover his best form.

“For Brazil it is important to have a player like Ney [Neymar], even more so at Santos, which is his home, where he played so many games,” the Real Madrid forward said on Wednesday.

Neymar, 32, has not played since sustaining a hamstring injury in November in his second game back after being sidelined for a year following a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee.

He has not been guaranteed any regular playing time as has not been registered to play in the Saudi Pro League for the second half of the season.

Al Hilal coach Jorge Jesus recently said that Neymar “can no longer play at the level we are used to.”

“I think a player like him can never stand still, not be active,” Raphinha said.
“What is happening at his club may be hindering him from returning to his best physically.”

Since joining Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023 for a record €90 million ($98.6m), Neymar has scored just one goal in seven matches.

The former Barcelona star, who holds the record as Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, was not included in the Saudi Pro League squad for the first half of the season but has played in the Asian Champions League.

“Ney [Neymar] is our idol and we hope he can return to play as soon as possible,” Vinícius said.

“May he be able to calmly take the best decision for him and his family.”

Real Madrid breaks records with over €1 billion in revenue – Deloitte

Real Madrid is the first football club to earn more than €1 billion ($1.04 billion) in a year, according to a report by Deloitte on Thursday.

The report, which looks at the 2023-24 season, shows that the Spanish and European champions made €1.045 billion in revenue, putting them at the top of the list.

Manchester City is in second place with €838 million, followed by Paris Saint-Germain with €806 million, Manchester United with €771 million, and Bayern Munich with €765 million.

English Premier League clubs dominate the top 10, with Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea also making the list.

The 20 clubs included in the study collectively received €11.2 billion, which is up 6% on 2022-23, Deloitte said.

In the 2023-24 season, Real Madrid achieved major successes, winning the Champions League after defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley and securing La Liga with a 10-point lead over second-place Barcelona.

Their total revenue of €1 billion came from €248 million in matchday income, €316 million from broadcasting rights, and €482 million in commercial earnings.

The ongoing improvements to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium contributed to a significant increase in matchday revenue, which doubled compared to the previous year.

Madrid’s €248 million from matchdays is the highest of any club, with Paris Saint-Germain coming in second at €170 million.

Their commercial revenue also grew by 19%, surpassing all other clubs.

Deloitte reported that the revenue gap between the top two clubs, Real Madrid and Manchester City, is now a record €208 million, making it the largest difference ever seen in the study.

  • What defines you as a man is how well you take care of your woman – Kwabena Kwabena

What defines you as a man is how well you take care of your woman – Kwabena Kwabena

Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has shared his views on true masculinity, saying that a real man should take responsibility for his partner.

Speaking openly with Roselyn Felli on Joy Prime’s Changes show, he said that every man should aim to be accountable to their spouse, as it is an important part of being a man.

“The process by which a woman was created shows that a woman must be comfortable, and every man knows that. Men who don’t know about that are the ones disgracing us.

Every man should know that he must be responsible for his woman. If you don’t know this basic thing, then you’re not a man,” he said.

The “Aso” hitmaker also challenged the notion of a male-dominated society, stressing that without women, the world would be devoid of meaning.

Kwabena Kwabena urged men to treat women with respect, stressing that being irresponsible is wrong and should not be encouraged.

He also advised women to show more understanding towards men, as many go through tough times without sharing their struggles.

According to him, being a real man is not about controlling others but about facing life’s difficulties with strength and determination.

“I want to be a man always. So I see battles as they must come for me to fight them, and as a man, I need to fight my battles, and that’s what makes me a man,” he stated.

In December 2024, Kwabena Kwabena revealed his plans to mark 20 years in the music industry.

The celebration will begin with his annual Valentine’s Day event on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

Provide them with alternative sources of livelihood – Opare Addo on addressing youth in galamsey

Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, says finding other ways for people in mining areas to earn a living is the best way to stop illegal mining, also known as “galamsey.”

Speaking to Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Opare Addo, also called Pablo, said people need to change how they think about mining and use better methods that won’t harm the environment.

He explained that many people turn to illegal mining because of poverty. To solve this problem, he suggests creating new job opportunities that can help people earn money in legal ways.

Opare Addo believes that if these programs are put in place, communities can stop illegal mining and focus on better ways to develop while protecting the environment.

“There is a Ghana we all want. I want a Ghana where illegal mining is not a part of but we do mining in a manner which is sustainable and won’t degrade the environment in any way. I believe that is also the vision of John Dramani Mahama.

“For young people who want to go into mining, we have to reset their minds. There is an old way that they have done things and they must re-engage them to change them from the old way they have done things.

“We are going to work together with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to look at sustainable ways of mining. I have maintained that wherever there is gold and there is poverty, people will find a way of getting under the ground to find the gold.

“We must eradicate poverty from the areas we find ourselves and if we have been able to do that effectively, by giving them alternative livelihood we may bring an end to illegal mining,” he said.

Man United boss Ruben Amorim explains worst in history comments

Ruben Amorim has admitted he regrets saying that his Manchester United squad might be the worst in the club’s history. He explained that his comments were meant to criticize himself, not his players.

He made the statement after their 3-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday but later clarified it during a press conference on Wednesday.

However, the 39-year-old also admitted that it would be unrealistic to ignore the serious challenges he faces, with his team losing seven out of the 15 games he has managed so far.

“First of all, I want to talk about that,” Amorim began after being asked about his suggestion that this is the worst United team in history.

“I was talking more about myself than the players. I also said in the same response that I was not helping my players. If you look around every time I speak and every time you push about the players are not good enough, I never put the spot on my players.

“So I understand I give you that headline and I am frustrated sometimes. Sometimes I should not say it in those terms, but it is what it is and that’s it.

“Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration in the moment. But the good thing is I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room five minutes before. The response was quite normal because I’m really blunt with my players.”

After losing to Brighton, Amorim changed his usual routine by talking to his players right away in the dressing room instead of waiting until the next day for a team meeting.

Reports suggest that the former Sporting CP coach was so upset that he even broke a TV.

“I’m a young guy and sometimes I make a mistake,” Amorim said. “And that’s why I don’t [usually] talk after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake and then I get more nervous and go to the [news] conference really nervous and say things I shouldn’t say, that’s it. Sometimes I’m a young guy and I make mistakes.

Govt to give commission payments to GPL players – NDC manifesto spokesperson on sports

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a new plan to improve sports in Ghana by offering government-paid commissions to players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL).

Dr. Fred Awaah, the party’s spokesperson on Sports, shared this promise during an interview with Sporty FM.

He explained that this policy is an important part of the NDC’s plans to develop sports in the country.

“We are committed, as a government, to paying commissions to Ghana Premier League players. This is not free money; it’s an investment that we expect to have a ripple effect on others,” he stated.

Additionally, Dr. Awaah highlighted the party’s ambitious plan to support the country’s elite athletes through educational opportunities.

“The NDC government will offer scholarships to athletes to attend top universities worldwide, where they can be nurtured into Olympic-level competitors,” he added.

This plan supports President Mahama’s promise to improve sports in Ghana with a new National Sports Policy.

If put into action, these policies could greatly help in developing sports in the country.

“GFA is keeping Otto Addo” – Dr. Randy Abbey confirms

GFA Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey has confirmed that Otto Addo will continue as the Black Stars head coach, despite the team failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana performed poorly under Addo, earning just three points from six matches with three losses and three draws—one of their worst AFCON qualifying campaigns.

Many fans have called for Addo to be sacked, especially since he was reappointed in March 2024 on a long-term contract.

However, in an interview with Original FM, Dr. Abbey, who is also the Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, stated that the GFA has no plans to remove the 49-year-old coach.

“I think the GFA has taken the decision already,” Dr Abbey stated.

He further disclosed plans to overhaul the team’s backroom staff to provide Addo with the necessary support for success.

Despite the AFCON disappointment, Addo has revived Ghana’s World Cup hopes with crucial victories against Mali and the Central African Republic in the ongoing qualifiers.

The GFA remains confident that with the right support system, he can steer the team back to success.

“The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers that start in March, and to ensure that the poor trend of results that led to non-qualification for AFCON is reversed to put the Black Stars back on the winning path,” Dr Abbey emphasized.

Ghana will play against Chad and Madagascar in March for the 5th and 6th rounds of the World Cup qualifiers.

This is Otto Addo’s second time as head coach of the Black Stars. He first led the team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After Ghana’s poor performance at the AFCON in Ivory Coast, he was reappointed in early 2024.

  • I had no choice – Mikel Arteta explains Partey’s position in Aston Villa clash

I had no choice – Mikel Arteta explains Partey’s position in Aston Villa clash

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta has defended his decision to use Thomas Partey as a right-back during their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

The Ghana international was deployed in that role against Unai Emery’s side last weekend. While Partey faced some criticism for his performance, Arteta explained the tactical reasoning behind the change.

“I had no choice. I didn’t have another right full-back,” he said.

“Who plays when Jurrien [Timber] isn’t available or his load is too high? I didn’t have another right-sided centre-back [against Aston Villa],” he added.

Arsenal seemed set for two wins in a row after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz gave them a 2-0 lead.

But Aston Villa responded, with Youri Tielemans scoring first and Ollie Watkins taking advantage of Partey’s defensive mistake to level the game against goalkeeper David Raya.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who earlier defeated Brentford 2-0 and still have a game in hand.

Arsenal will try to get back to winning ways when they face Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League tonight, followed by a Premier League match against Wolves this weekend.

Brentford’s Yoane Wissa to make court appearance over acid, kidnapping case with woman

Brentford striker Yoane Wissa is set to appear in a French court this week as a witness in a case against a woman accused of attacking him with acid.

The trial, which started in Lorient on Tuesday, will last four days, with Wissa attending for two of them.

The suspect, identified as Laetitia P., is accused of throwing acid on Wissa’s face and trying to kidnap his baby daughter in 2021.

She is facing charges of attempted murder and kidnapping, which could lead to a 30-year prison sentence if found guilty.

Laetitia P. is also accused of attacking another woman in Vannes the next day and taking her baby.

The 28-year-old footballer needed urgent facial surgery after the attack, and doctors initially feared he might lose his sight.

The incident took place just a month before Wissa’s transfer to Brentford. His lawyer, Karim Morand-Lahouazi, stated, “Yoane continues to experience the lasting effects of this traumatic attack and attempted kidnapping.”

Wissa’s football career continues to attract attention, with ongoing transfer rumors. Nottingham Forest recently made a £22 million offer for him, but Brentford turned it down.

Even with questions about his future, Wissa recently made history at Brentford by becoming the club’s top scorer in the Premier League after scoring in their 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

  • He doesn’t seem too competent for the position – Dan Kwaku Yeboah on Kofi Adams’ nomination

He doesn’t seem too competent for the position – Dan Kwaku Yeboah on Kofi Adams’ nomination

Sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah has said he does not see Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, as someone with deep knowledge of sports.

He explained that he has known Adams since their university days when Adams was a teacher at Adisadel College and an active member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, Kwaku Yeboah pointed out that Adams is mainly known for his political career, not for his involvement in sports.

Speaking on Peace FM, he admitted that Adams’ nomination for the role took him by surprise.

“While I was working at ATL Radio, he [Kofi Adams] was also teaching chemistry at Adisadel College, while working for the NDC. He was a spokesperson for President Rawlings before rising to become an MP.

“However, I cannot vouch for his knowledge and expertise in sports, even though he is a competent person in what he does,” he said in Twi.

The Peace FM journalist noted that he expected former MP for Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, to get the nod to run the sports ministry due to his experience as a sports broadcaster and administrator.

“In all honesty, my expectation was Nii Lante Vanderpuye, because he has done it before as an accomplished sports broadcaster. Since we don’t have the power to appoint, we only share our opinions.

We wish Adams the best,” he added.

President John Dramani Mahama has chosen Kofi Adams as the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation.

A statement issued on January 21, 2024, confirmed that Adams will be in charge of sports and recreational activities if approved.

His appointment will be finalized after he goes through a vetting process by the Parliamentary Appointment Committee and is deemed fit for the position.
