MC Yaa Yeboah criticizes FDA’s stance on spiritual products

Media personality MC Yaa Yeboah has criticized the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) for its assertion that it does not regulate products making spiritual claims.

According to MC Yaa Yeboah, even if a product makes spiritual claims, it remains a physical product consumed by people, thus requiring certification to ensure safety or, at the very least, harmlessness before consumption.

Following the FDA’s announcement of Fella Makafui’s arrest for selling unlicensed and unregistered products, social media users began calling out other influencers to the FDA, including Yaa Jackson, Hajia Bintu, and others.

Hajia Bintu faced scrutiny for promoting a ‘kayanmata’ product, also known as love potions.

However, the FDA responded that they only regulate physical products and cannot assess the efficacy of spiritual products.

This response prompted MC Yaa Yeboah to vehemently criticize the agency.

Fella Makafui can sue Medikal for breach of confidence and defamation of character – Lawyer advises

Fella Makafui has received advice to take legal action against Medikal for breaching confidentiality and defaming her character, stemming from his decision to divulge her secrets and harm her business.

Controversial Ghanaian lawyer Maurice Ampaw stated that Fella Makafui failed to seek proper legal counsel, which could have prevented Medikal from exposing her secrets.

Ampaw emphasized that secrets shared between married couples are typically protected by confidentiality.

He suggested that Fella should have sought legal assistance as soon as Medikal began exposing her secrets, potentially obtaining an injunction to mitigate her current troubles.

Medikal’s revelations during his emotional outbursts against Fella reportedly led to her arrest by the FDA for selling unlicensed products and an invitation from Nungua traditional leaders to account for land purchases.

Ampaw believes that with adequate legal representation, all these issues could have been prevented.

  • I blocked Davido after he unfollowed me – Medikal

I blocked Davido after he unfollowed me – Medikal

Ghanaian rapper Medikal has stated that he has no regrets about blocking Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido on Instagram.

In early May 2024, a dispute arose between several Ghanaian rappers and Nigerian rapper Dremo, a signee of Davido. The conflict began when Dremo dissed Sarkodie in a song, following Sarkodie’s mention of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy in his track “Brag.”

This prompted responses from many Ghanaian rappers, including Lyrical Joe, Don Itch, and Phrimpong.

In what many perceived as a show of anger, Davido unfollowed several Ghanaian artists, including Medikal and M.anifest, on Instagram. In response, Medikal blocked Davido.

Discussing the incident in a live interview on Starr FM, the “Omo Ada” hitmaker expressed no regrets about his decision. He indicated that while he is open to reconciliation, he values mutual respect and loyalty in his relationships. Medikal also hinted at underlying reasons for the fallout but chose to keep them private.

“He unfollowed me, and I was like, “Ok, cool” so I blocked him. There’s a reason why but I don’t want to talk about it. I have no regrets blocking him.

“It’s calm, maybe one day, the universe will bring us together again. I don’t go around looking for problems. But if someone I show love to shows me the opposite, I just go my own way,” he said.

Despite the tension, Medikal expressed his openness to sharing the stage with Davido in the future, emphasizing that he harbors no hard feelings.

He compared the situation to his recent reconciliation with fellow Ghanaian artist D-Black, highlighting his willingness to resolve conflicts through dialogue.

“I would have no problem (performing on stage with Davido). I don’t keep things within me. Just as D-Black walked in here and we settled things, that’s how I am.

“If something bothers me, I would react, but when we meet and talk, we settle it,” he said.

  • Boat rider involved in Junior Pope’s death had no certification – Investigation reveals

Boat rider involved in Junior Pope’s death had no certification – Investigation reveals

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has released a preliminary report on the tragic boat accident on the Anam River that claimed the life of actor Junior Pope and four others on April 10.

The report, presented by NSIB Director Cpt. Alex Baden on May 24, revealed that the bureau first learned of the incident through social media rather than official channels.

Investigations found that the boat’s driver lacked proper certification. The report further explained that the boat was operating at high speed when it collided with a slower-moving wooden fishing canoe, causing the boat to capsize and eject all passengers into the river.

The sole occupant of the canoe avoided the collision by jumping into the water.

“There was only one person on the wooden fishing canoe. This rowdiness in the boat distracted the driver and he was not looking out as required. The boat was on high speed and the crossing canoe was moving at a much slower speed.

“The only occupant of the canoe, on sighting the fast approaching boat jumped into the river and escaped; The boat collided with the canoe at a high speed which resulted in the boat capsizing and all persons onboard were flung into Anam River.” the director said.

Contradicting the movie producer’s claims, the NSIB reported that only one boat passenger had a life jacket, which they had brought themselves, and this person was among the survivors.

The report also highlighted the absence of a passenger manifest and the lack of timely rescue operations, including the absence of trained divers.

“Only one passenger on the outboard engine fibre boat was wearing a life jacket. The only passenger wearing a life jacket came with it and was not provided by the operator. The passenger wearing the life jacket was one of the survivors. The boat was fitted with an outboard engine. There was no manifest of passengers and persons onboard the boat. Rescue operation was not timely and there were no trained divers around to assist in the operation,” the report added.

The NSIB’s safety recommendations called on the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to ensure the registration of all boats engaged in commercial transport on national inland waterways.

Furthermore, the NSIB emphasized the need for NIWA to implement and enforce robust safety protocols to prevent future tragedies on the waterways.

A tragic accident occurred on the Accra-Apam Highway on Saturday, May 25, 2024, severely affecting all four occupants of a black Toyota Camry. The driver, Nana Obiri Yeboah, suffered the least injuries, while his front-seat passenger succumbed to his injuries.

The back-seat passengers were renowned Ghanaian highlife musicians K.K. Fosu and Bless, famous for their hit song “Chocho Mu Cho.”

In an interview on UTV’s United Showbiz show that evening, Yeboah described the events leading to the head-on collision with a passenger vehicle.

He recounted how, on their way to a wedding in the Central Region, a white Benz 350’s wrongful overtaking forced all cars heading toward Apam Junction to move onto the road’s shoulders to allow the passenger vehicle to pass before they could return to their lanes.

“Like the other cars, we also moved to the shoulder of the road to allow the errant driver to pass, it turned out that he actually crashed into our car, a situation I became aware of when I regained consciousness,” he told MzGee.

“The three passengers had already been sent to the Apam Hospital when I regained consciousness. I asked and was told where they had been sent. I quickly ensured that our key belongings were secured before heading to the hospital.

“I can confirm that KK and Bless suffered broken legs, KK’s own was less damaging than Bless’, the other passenger, an aide to Bless, apparently died on the spot,” he added.

A video shared online by UTV revealed the mangled bonnet of the saloon car involved in the accident. Photos showed the two musicians in hospital beds, highlighting the severity of their injuries.

Nana Obiri Yeboah confirmed that the three survivors have since been transported back to Accra by ambulance and admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) for further treatment.

Meanwhile, GhanaWeb reports that the driver of the errant Benz has reported to the Apam Police and is assisting with the investigation.

‘I felt cheated’ – Lyrical Joe on losing rapper of the year award at 2023 Ghana Music Awards

Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has expressed his disappointment over losing the ‘Rapper of the Year’ award at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards.

In an interview with TV3 on May 24, 2024, he stated that his songs, which earned him nominations in the category, met and surpassed the criteria required by the academy.

“I felt cheated because my project that got nominated for the category was exactly what they said they wanted.

“I was the only person with a full ten-minute rap song, different delivery with a full ten-minute quality video, everything that they were looking for, it had it,” he said.

He added that the effort he invested in creating a 10-minute rap song with an accompanying music video should have been sufficient to secure the win.

“Because nowadays nobody wants to rap for more than 3 minutes, so for me to go that mile to constantly wow people for 10 minutes, I deserved it.

“So anytime any song from my 5th August album is nominated and it doesn’t win, I feel cheated,” he said.

Lyrical Joe was nominated for the ‘Best Rap Performance’ category at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards along Sarkodie, Strongman, Medikal but lost out to Amerado.

This year, at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Lyrical Joe is in the category once again, hoping to secure the award above other rappers like Sarkodie, Amerado and Medikal.

Legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw has issued a warning that he will pursue legal action against celebrity couple Medikal and Fella Makafui if they continue to publicize their marital issues.

In an interview on Onua TV, Ampaw expressed his concern about the couple’s influence on the youth, emphasizing that personal matters should be kept private to safeguard their young followers.

“If they release any arsenal about their marriage, I’ll take them to court. For these two, I’ll change the dynamics.

“They are two mature adults who chose to get married and they keep releasing information that defiles our children. These matters are supposed to be confidential, away from our young children who are not married yet. They can’t be allowed to be exposed to such content.” he said.

Ampaw also criticized Fella Makafui’s response to Medikal’s previous disclosures.

He asserted that she should have promptly taken legal action against him for violating confidentiality.

Ampaw highlighted the absence of legal counsel in Fella’s camp and advised filing a lawsuit along with an injunction to stop further public discussion of their marriage.

“Fella’s management and team lack legal advice. The best course of action would have been to drag him to court and sue him for breach of confidence as soon as Medikal started talking,” Ampaw advised.

Recognizing that obstacles exist in every relationship, Ampaw counseled the couple to continue cautiously while they decide what to do next.

FDA allegedly not permitted to vet spiritual product – Report

In the aftermath of public inquiries about ‘kayamata,’ a substance marketed for its alleged ability to attract men, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) clarified its stance on regulating products making spiritual claims.

This clarification came in response to concerns raised by individuals regarding the FDA’s jurisdiction over kayamata products, particularly after social media influencer Hajia Bintu’s endorsement of the product.

This development comes amid reports that Fella Makafui was detained on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, for involvement in unlawful activities related to the sale of unlicensed medicines.

In an official response on their X account, the FDA stated, “Per the law, the FDA is not mandated to oversee products that make spiritual claims.”

For educational purposes, Kayan Mata is a concoction traditionally prepared as an appetizer or sweetener to enhance a woman’s allure for her husband.

The term “Kayan Mata” originates from the Hausa language, with “Kaya” referring to property, things, or stuff, and “Mata” meaning women. Thus, it translates to “women’s properties” or “women’s things.”

Typically, Kayan Mata products include waist beads, earrings, necklaces, perfumes, soaps, and more.

These products are believed to have the ability to captivate men and fulfill the woman’s desires. Some women have shared testimonials about the effectiveness of these products.

“So I always create the songs with what I am going through so it depends on the mood I am in. When I am sad you might hear it in my song and when I am happy, making money or broke, you will hear it in my song,” Medikal narrated.

He described his decade-long journey in the Ghanaian music industry as a successful one, marked by significant achievements.

“It’s been beautiful despite the ups and downs, here and there. I will rate my experience in the music industry at ten over ten because I see it as all that I have been through is the reason I am here now.

“I am better than I was ten years ago. So I will rate it ten over ten no matter what we have gone through ten years ago. Five years ago I wasn’t in a position to make certain things happen,” he stated.

The rapper from Ghana went on to say that helping those around him has always been his desire.

“Right now, I have accumulated a lot of things that I can boast about. I can say that I can make this or that happen. I can change the lives of other people. That is what I have always wanted,” he added.

Fella Makafui, Medikal individually honour Nungua Stool invitation

Actress Fella Makafui attended a session before the Nungua Stool on May 24, 2024, in response to summons issued earlier in the week to herself and her estranged musician husband, Samuel Adu Frimpong, known as Medikal.

The couple received separate summons from the Office of the Gborbu Wulomo-Shitse, representing the Gadangme State, concerning their land documents, which had recently surfaced on social media.

In photos circulated online, Fella was accompanied by fellow actress Habiba Sinare and other aides during the meeting.

Journalist Caleb Nii Boye shared details of the encounter in a Facebook post, stating, “It was a fruitful meeting. Fella Makafui attended but didn’t bring the land documents. Medikal couldn’t attend but called to inform the chiefs.”

“They have been asked to come back on Tuesday with the land documents,” he captioned the post accompanied by a photo of Fella and the Nungua chiefs.

Nii Boye updated his earlier assertion that Medikal did not attend the meeting by posting information about the musician’s subsequent Friday meeting with the chiefs.

“Aftermath of the Medikal meeting with Nungua Traditional council. Medikal didn’t come to the meeting with the documents requested for, so he has been asked to return on Tuesday 11am with the said document,” he stated.

Amidst their divorce proceedings, Fella Makafui and Medikal, once celebrated as one of Ghana’s most glamorous couples, are facing a tumultuous separation while still residing together and co-parenting their daughter, Island Frimpong.

Their shared living arrangement has led to further conflicts, with Medikal reportedly asking Fella to remove her cousin from their residence.

In response, Fella has requested the intervention of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate Medikal, escalating their ongoing disputes.

Additionally, the ownership of their home has become a contentious issue. Medikal claims sole financial responsibility for the property but contends that he included Fella’s name for the benefit of their daughter.

Fella disputes this, citing her contributions during their marriage and vows to present her case in court.

With conflicting accounts, authorities have deemed it necessary to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

  • Calls for parliament to probe EOCO’s handling of Cecilia Dapaah’s case pointless – Amidu to Domelevo, others

Calls for parliament to probe EOCO’s handling of Cecilia Dapaah’s case pointless – Amidu to Domelevo, others

Martin Amidu has criticized former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo, lawyer Martin Kpebu, and other prominent Ghanaians for petitioning Parliament to conduct a bipartisan probe into the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) handling of the investigation of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, calling their efforts futile.

The petitioning group, which includes security analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa, academic Professor Ransford Gyampo, and over 100 other Ghanaians, argued that EOCO had grounds to investigate the former Minister for money laundering but failed to pursue the case.

In a statement copied to GhanaWeb, former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu stated that EOCO’s decision to close the case against Dapaah cannot be overturned, as it was directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Amidu explained that Parliament lacks the authority to investigate the Attorney General’s responsibilities, emphasizing that the investigatory and prosecutorial discretion of the Attorney General is not subject to judicial review.

Amidu’s statement, dated May 23, 2024, reads in part, “The petitioners to Parliament, most of whom are known activists and spokespersons for Kissi Agyebeng and the NDC, know that it is trite learning that the investigatory and prosecutorial discretion of the Attorney-General is not subject to review by the courts of law. The EOCO is subject to the authority and directions of the Attorney-General under Act 804.

“The Executive Director of the EOCO cannot, therefore, refuse to comply with the advice of the Attorney General or the Director of Public Prosecutions. Certainly, Parliament has no power to investigate the exercise of investigatory and prosecutorial discretion by the Attorney-General under the entrenched Article 88 of the 1992 Constitution.”

Mr Amidu, a former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, suggested that Parliament’s involvement in this matter would only serve political interests if the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Minority Caucus choose to exploit it.

Therefore, Amidu concluded that the petition to Parliament, inspired by Kissi Agyebeng, to investigate EOCO’s failure to pursue non-existent money laundering allegations against Cecilia Dapaah is futile, unless the NDC Speaker of Parliament uses it for political gain.

He also criticized Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng for violating several provisions of the 1992 Constitution during his investigation of the former minister.

    About Cecilia Dapaah’s Case:

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) closed its case against the former minister and her husband, Daniel Osei Kufuor, who were accused of corruption and corruption-related offences after two of their house helps allegedly stole $1 million and €300,000 in cash, along with other valuable items from their residence in Abelemkpe.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, concluded that his office lacked the authority to prosecute or take further action against the former minister and referred the case to EOCO.

The referral was based on the suspicion that the large sums of money found at Cecilia Dapaah’s properties and bank accounts could be the proceeds of a money laundering and structuring scheme.

However, EOCO returned the dockets on the case following advice by the Office of the Attorney General that “The OSP’s referral to EOCO for investigations into money laundering is without basis.”

Attorney General Godfred Dame also said that there was no evidence of corruption or procurement breaches against the former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources and her husband.

Multiple fatalities and injuries recorded in accident on Accra-Kumasi Highway

A tragic road accident involving a red Scania Marcopolo bus with registration number GW 9090-18 has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries on the Accra to Kumasi highway.

The collision occurred early Friday morning around 4:00 am at Atwemamena, a community between Bunso and Akyem Asafo in the Eastern Region.

The bus, traveling from Kumasi towards Accra, collided with a truck heading in the opposite direction.

Eyewitnesses described the accident as severe, noting that “several passengers, including the bus driver and mate, lost their lives. I have seen a decapitated leg in the mangled front of the bus. Victims have been transported to Suhum Government Hospital for emergency care.”

This tragic event is part of a disturbing trend in Ghana, where road crashes remain alarmingly frequent.

In the first quarter of this year alone, 4,503 road accidents were recorded, resulting in 829 deaths and 4,955 injuries.

The Orthopaedic Association of Ghana (OAG) has called on the government to implement comprehensive trauma care systems and enforce stringent road safety measures.

During its 4th Annual General and Scientific Conference at Kwahu on May 16, the OAG emphasized the need for timely and effective treatment for trauma patients, strict enforcement of road traffic laws, promotion of helmet and seat belt use, and improvements in road infrastructure to enhance safety for all road users.

  • “You are a wounded snake whose head needs to be decoupled from OSP” – Martin Amidu tells Kissi Agyebeng

“You are a wounded snake whose head needs to be decoupled from OSP” – Martin Amidu tells Kissi Agyebeng

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has broken his silence for the first time since petitioning President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the removal of his successor, Kissi Agyebeng.

In a statement sent to the media, Amidu criticized Agyebeng and those defending the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s investigation of former Minister for Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah, who has been accused of money laundering by the office.

He asserted his unwavering commitment to defending the Constitution of Ghana.

Describing Agyebeng as an ‘inexperienced and incompetent neophyte’ and citing multiple alleged violations of the constitution by the Special Prosecutor, Amidu stated that he could no longer continue in his role.

“My personal right to defend the 1992 Constitution and the due process of law guaranteed under it cannot be subjected to intimidation by any media house or any group of fellow citizens.

“Kissi Agyebeng is a wounded snake whose head needs to be decoupled from the OSP before the OSP infests the body politic with the very poisonous corruption the OSP was established to prevent and investigate, thereby destroying the 1992 Constitution,” part of the statement by Amidu, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, which is dated May 23, 2024, reads.

He added, “Those who nominated Kissi Agyebeng can continue to protect him, but I will not stop defending the basic ethics and principles of law enforcement and the 1992 Constitution, which I have done throughout my adult life as a citizen of Ghana.”

    Background:

President Akufo-Addo has forwarded a petition to remove Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor to the Chief Justice.

The petition, dated April 30, 2024, was submitted by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu and sent to Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on May 6, 2024.

Amidu cited procurement irregularities in acquiring vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and alleged misconduct involving judges and the administration of justice.

Additional accusations included violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions, breaches of the right to information, and inappropriate staff appointments.

Following Article 146 of the Constitution, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is assessing whether there is sufficient initial evidence to form a committee for Agyebeng’s potential impeachment.

She has requested that the Special Prosecutor respond to the issues raised in the petition.

  • NPA CEO reverses position on SML service, prepares to award contract to another company

NPA CEO reverses position on SML service, prepares to award contract to another company

Several months following the National Petroleum Authority’s (NPA) CEO, Dr. Mustapha Abdul Hamid, voicing significant concerns regarding a revenue contract’s possible duplicity between the revenue assurance company, Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), there seems to have been an abrupt change in direction.

Initially, the NPA CEO expressed reservations about potential role duplication when certain members of the NPA management discovered that SML Ghana had been tasked with automatic tank gauging, a function already performed by the GRA.

“Potentially, we consider it (the SML deal) duplicitous,” the NPA CEO said of the company created in February 2017 to boost the Revenue deal a year or two later.

Regarding the necessity of a company like SML Ghana in the petroleum revenue tracking system, the NPA CEO stated that the system is already robust and does not require the involvement of SML Ghana.

“The NPA has a system that tracks the lifting and transportation of fuel products from the depots to the tanks of the oil marketing companies. With that system, the NPA can tell the volumes of petroleum products in all the fuel stations across Ghana at any given time,” he revealed.

However, a letter dated May 20, 2024, and signed by Dr. Mustapha Abdul Hamid, inviting stakeholders for an engagement on May 23, 2024, contradicts his previous position and raises doubts about his credibility.

The letter reads in part: “The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) wishes to invite you to participate in a presentation by Fields Limited, which seeks to provide an End-to-End Primary Supply Assurance and Management System for the Petroleum Downstream Industry.”

The technology aims to provide a tailored solution to meet the needs of all stakeholders in terms of ensuring the visibility of supplies of petroleum products in the country, including stock monitoring and management, as well as addressing risks associated with the supply, trading, and financing of petroleum products.

The presentation is scheduled as follows:

    Date: Thursday, May 23, 2024

    Time: 11 am

    Venue: NPA Head Office, Dzorwulu

Questions have been raised as to why there is a sudden change in position when the CEO had earlier raised concerns about the duplicity of the project, among others.

What has happened to the robust system of the NPA, and was it the case that the NPA was not in a position to track all petroleum products as he claimed earlier?

Who is HFIElD, and what is their experience? And who is the person behind the company, as well as their experience?

What is the need for a new service provider at a time when the GRA already has an end-to-end revenue assurance system?

  • Unforgivable lies that ruins marriages

    Unforgivable lies that ruins marriages

It’s false to claim that marriage is a walk in the park.

While the journey can be rewarding—akin to the tales of fairy tale princesses and princes—there are three egregious falsehoods that can wreak havoc on marriages:

Your true love will fulfill you
Sound familiar? It should. It is just one of the big marriage-destroying lies promoted by advertising, movies, and fake love stories. Other lies perpetuated include the idea your partner is there to make you happy and will always comfort you when you’re sad and heal you when you’re hurt.

Sadly, the more you need love, the more hurt you’ve been, and the more unfulfilled you are, the more you buy into the lie that it is your partner’s job to keep you happy. This lie can kill your marriage. Of course, many more lies can creep into a marriage and cause damage.

The lies we tell ourselves, the lies we tell because of shame, and the lies that hide basic betrayals that make rebuilding trust feel impossible.

Your partner’s job is to keep you happy
The best marriages are created by two people who can truly know themselves and each other. Remember fairy tales?

Happy endings come after the beautiful princess has endured cruelty, falsity, and hard work. She has remained strong in her goodness, bravery, and desire for love.

The prince has worked to overcome obstacles as well. Relationship experts have come up with different theories and therapies that tell us humans are pretty good at falling in love with people who bring up hidden hurts. Of course, not on purpose.

Sayings like “You can’t heal what you can’t feel” suggest that we unconsciously choose someone who will evoke past pain. And, just as your partner unintentionally uncovers your hidden wounds, you’re going to uncover theirs.

Love is perfect, and you’ll always feel “in love”
Have you ever been with someone nice to everyone else and fallen in love with you, too? What happens if they hurt you? You try to tell them you’re hurt, and they say you’re accusing them of doing something wrong.

Being nice is how they’ve gotten on in the world, how they’ve succeeded — everyone else thinks they’re great — and here you are, telling them they are not good enough. You protest that’s not what you’re telling them, and they get angry.

You get more hurt, and angry because they’re not listening, and if you’re not careful, what started as a pinprick becomes a volcano. But we’ve lied to and convinced ourselves our love should be perfect, so this comes as a total shock.

Here’s how can you fight our culture’s basic love lies:

Know that no emotions are bad
In any full life, you will feel them all. Become capable of feeling without blaming. This is crucial to building and experiencing good relationships.

Being angry doesn’t mean that someone has wronged you. You’ll have a better chance of getting to the bottom of things if you can stand your anger long enough to calm down and know what happened.

Become capable of feeling without acting
Feeling desire and excitement about someone other than your spouse doesn’t mean you have to be physically intimate with them. You may decide to, but you’ll be better off if you hold the charge and excitement enough to decide if it’s worth the betrayal.

And make no mistake, this is a betrayal no matter how open your relationship is. Feelings are like the weather — there’s a whole spectrum of them, and some are hard to take. Becoming more capable of knowing and handling the spectrum sets you up for attracting a good mate and building strong love.

Remember that lies to ourselves destroy marriages
Sarah, a beautiful 22-year-old, fell in love with Peter’s adoration of her. She tried to ignore that she didn’t feel as much for him, and the attention she got from men helped her avoid facing her insecurities. She never admitted how much she craved that attention.

Three years into their marriage, she had an affair. They patched things up, but six months later, she repeated the mistake. After a third fling, they divorced, which is where they were headed before they even reached the altar.

Gage was ashamed of having been a drug addict. By the time he met Li, he only smoked occasionally. He said he couldn’t tell Li because she was against using substances of any kind, even medication, to alter moods.

If Gage was really over smoking pot, he probably would have told Li about it in one of the many conversations they had about their pasts. When he started smoking again under stress, and when I found out, she insisted that he’d never been who she thought he was, and he insisted that she was trying to control him.

Reportedly Johnny Cash’s marriage to June Carter survived an infidelity with her sister. A betrayal that big is likely to be outed. Once it’s known, it can erode a couple’s belief in their specialness to each other and destroy any boundary of safety they’ve built.

Sadly, few of us learn how to ride out our strong feelings. Often that’s our job in our adult love relationships. How will you bring truth, honesty, and bravery into your marriage?

        1. You deserve a 5-year ban from voting – Sammy Gyamfi tells Ahiagbah

You deserve a 5-year ban from voting – Sammy Gyamfi tells Ahiagbah

National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has criticized Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communication for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that he should have faced prosecution for his participation in the 2020 general election.

Gyamfi alleged that Ahiagbah committed a crime by voting in the 2020 election despite his name not being on the voters’ register, and furthermore, he publicly admitted to this offense. He emphasized that electoral laws in the country explicitly prohibit individuals from voting if their names are not listed on the voters’ register.

“This is a very serious matter. It doesn’t only border on the commission of a crime; it borders on a confession by Richard Ahiagbah that he has committed a crime… Voter registration in Ghana is governed by law. You cannot engage in registration and voting per your own whims and caprices.

“He himself has confessed to voting in the 2020 elections, both the presidential and parliamentary, when his name was not on the voters’ register. He said that he turned up at the polling station to vote on 7th December 2020, but his name was not on the register. In Ghana, you can’t vote in any public elections unless your name is on the voters’ register,” the NDC national communications officer said during a panel discussion on the Good Morning Ghana programme on Thursday, May 23, 2024.

He added, “If you check regulation 32 of CI 127, this is what it says: ‘(1) A polling assistant may, before delivering a ballot paper to a person who is to vote at the election, require that person to produce a voter identification card in order to establish that the person is the registered voter whose name and voter identification number and particulars appear in the register. (2) In the absence of a voter identification card, the polling assistant shall identify the name and particulars of the voter as recorded in the Names Reference List… If your name is not on the register, then it means there is no remedy for you; it means your card cannot be authenticated. It is useless. You are not entitled to vote.’”

Sammy Gyamfi said that the law states that Ahiagbah should have been imprisoned and/or fined and banned from voting for five years after serving his sentence.

          Background:

Richard Ahiagbah confirmed claims that, despite possessing a legal voter identification card that was granted to him upon completing his voter registration in 2020, his name was not on the register when he went to cast his ballot in an interview with Accra-based Neat FM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

“I voted in the 2020 election. You have to ask officials of the EC why I was able to vote even though my name was not on the register.

“Because I have a voter’s ID card which bears my name. I got it in 2020 when we were asked to register for a new voters’ register. I have the card, and it has the polling station number where I have always been voting,” he said in the Twi dialect.

He added, “I went to queue to vote on 7th December 2020, and when it got to my turn, the officials said my name was not on the register. So, I asked why my details were not on the register and showed them my documents.”

The NPP communications director added that the EC official on election day agreed that he should be allowed to vote, but he does not know why they allowed him to vote even though his name was not on the voters’ register.

In an interview with Accra-based Neat FM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Richard Ahiagbah affirmed that despite possessing a valid voter identification card issued to him after completing his registration in 2020, his name was absent from the voter register when he attempted to cast his vote.

We have enough forex to supply – Finance Minister

Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has provided assurance to Ghanaians regarding the availability of an adequate supply of foreign exchange in the market to sustain the progress made in improving the performance of the local currency, the Cedi.

He emphasized that the Bank of Ghana has significantly bolstered reserves to enhance the stability of the Cedi against major trading currencies.

During a press briefing held on May 24, 2024, to update the public on the economy, the finance minister disclosed that Ghana is set to receive a total disbursement of US$2.3 billion by the end of the year.

These disbursements are part of the IMF bailout package, World Bank loan facility, and other related funding from donor partners.

“We, therefore, expect total disbursements of at least US$2.32 billion before the end of the year to add to the significant foreign exchange reserves already built up by the BoG,” the minister said.

Dr. Amin Adam advises Ghanaians against hastily purchasing foreign exchange from the market. He asserts that speculative activities surrounding the performance of the Cedi often lead to its depreciation.

“We wish to assure Ghanaians that there is enough foreign exchange. Hence, there is no need to rush and buy forex,” the finance minister said.

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian Cedi has experienced one of its worst declines in decades. At major forex bureaus in the capital Accra, the local currency is trading at GH¢15.00 as of May 24, 2024.

International news portal, Bloomberg, has predicted that the value of the Cedi will depreciate further by the end of the year.

        3. Finance Minister highlights fiscal achievements under IMF programme

Finance Minister highlights fiscal achievements under IMF programme

Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has outlined the government’s successful attainment of several key fiscal targets within the framework of the International Monetary Fund-supported program.

These achievements encompass significant milestones such as zero Central Bank borrowing, maintaining a ceiling of GH¢4.3 billion for the primary deficit on a commitment basis, ensuring zero accumulation of external debt payments, and adhering to a non-concessional borrowing limit of $66.2 million in present value terms.

Moreover, by the conclusion of December 2023, the government had met its indicative targets, including securing a minimum of GH¢114.19 billion for non-oil public revenue and allocating at least GH¢4.07 billion for social spending.

Addressing reporters at the Monthly Press Briefing, Dr. Amin Adam emphasized that ongoing assessments were being conducted regarding the indicative target of maintaining a ceiling of zero net change in the stock of payables of the central government and payables to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

These assessments are slated to be finalized ahead of the IMF Executive Board meeting for the 2nd Review.

Furthermore, Dr. Adam highlighted the implementation of structural reforms as part of the IMF-supported program’s second review. These reforms encompass the expansion of the GIFMIS infrastructure to include over 280 IGF-reliant institutions and the publication of the final report of the first quarterly audit of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s single account on the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission’s website.

“The positive results of the first and second reviews of the implementation of the IMF-supported Programme testify that we are achieving the Programme’s objective of restoring macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability, building resilience through the implementation of strong and wide-ranging structural reforms, and laying the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth, while protecting the poor and vulnerable. We are now seeing signs of macroeconomic stability and economic recovery”, he added.

Growth turned out to be more resilient and robust in 2023 than initially programmed as Gross Domestic Product grew by 2.9% compared to the original projection of 1.5% and the revised projection of 2.3%.

Headline inflation also declined by 31 percentage points from 54.1% at the end of 2022 to 23.2% at the end of Dec 2023 before inching up slightly to 25.8% in March 2024 due largely to base effect.

        4. Ghanaian goods are now competitive worldwide – GEPA

Ghanaian goods are now competitive worldwide – GEPA

Principal Export Development Officer at the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Catherine Gordor, highlighted that Ghanaian-made products have gained competitiveness and are in demand on the international market.

She attributed this to enhancements in the quality and packaging of local products to meet global standards.

Gordor shared these insights during an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the 3rd Made-in-Ghana Bazaar organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.

She noted that although local products face a challenge of insufficient supply to meet international demand, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority has initiated various strategies to address this shortfall.

These efforts include promoting youth participation in agriculture and providing seedlings to farmers to boost yield. Gordor emphasized the numerous opportunities available for youth engagement in the agricultural value chain and export sector, encouraging them to capitalize on these prospects.

Dorothy Amoah, Head of Marketing at the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), underscored the role of stringent standardization and certification enforced by the GSA in enhancing the quality and packaging of local products. She emphasized that adherence to these standards facilitates the exportability of products and ensures access to international markets.

Exhibitors and vendors at the Bazaar shared positive feedback, noting an increasing appreciation for made-in-Ghana products among the public.

Mabel Quarshie, Director of Aquatic Food Limited, observed improved patronage for local products, attributing it to growing awareness of their quality.

However, she identified limited access to credit and inclusive finance as a significant challenge for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the country, calling for enhanced access to finance and increased investment in SMEs and startups.

Emmanuel Tetteh Coffie, Sales Manager of Spring Agro Industries Limited, echoed concerns about high-interest rates on credit facilities for SMEs, noting their impact on access to finance.

Mohammed Princess Falina, CEO of Princess Fashion Design, highlighted the importance of improving packaging and quality standards for SMEs to meet international requirements and thrive in the market.

        5. Cedi is still fairly robust – Finance Minister

Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has reassured the public about the cedi’s resilience despite recent depreciation trends.

During the Ministry’s monthly economic update, he emphasized that the cedi has demonstrated significant stability in 2024.

“The Cedi’s stability has continued into 2024 with a cumulative depreciation of 14.2% [from January] as of May 20, compared to 20.7% recorded in the same period in 2023.

“People may see the cedi depreciating fast recently, but if you compare the rate of depreciation this year which has been 14.2% from January to May to that of the same period last year, this year’s rate is better.

“So on that comparative note, we are safe to conclude that the cedi is still strong. It is very strong,” he said on Friday.

The value of Ghana’s currency has drastically decreased recently. Local currency was trading between GH₵14.50 and GH₵15 to the dollar as of May 16.

Numerous currency analysts have projected that the major trade currencies will continue to gain ground on the cedi.

Minister Amin Adam remained optimistic about the cedi’s future performance.

He expects improvements as the country advances with debt restructuring, fiscal consolidation, and efforts to enhance reserves.

“We expect the cedi to improve into the medium term as we complete the debt restructuring, make progress on fiscal consolidation, and improve on our reserves,” he explained.

The Minister also attributed the recent pressure to the strengthening of the US dollar against major global currencies, including Ghana’s cedi.

“The recent pressure on the cedi are largely a result of the strengthening of the US dollar against major trading currencies across the world, including Ghana’s cedi. Therefore, we expect that as the US currency moderates in its strength, the effects will be felt in our currency.”

        6. Smoking, ritual killings in films, music videos, and skits banned by Nigerian govt

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) have made an announcement on Tuesday May 21, 2024, that it would henceforth restrict the depiction of smoking, ritual killings and money rituals in movies, music videos and skits.

NFVCB’s Executive Director, Shaibu Husseini, disclosed this in Enugu at a National Stakeholder Engagement on the “#Smoke-Free Nollywood” campaign, which was organised in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).

This action became crucial for the industry after the nation was confronted with a cinematic “crisis necessitating decisive and daring measures” from parents, guardians, and stakeholders.

Consequently, following numerous discussions, the NFVCB, in partnership with CAPPA, opted to establish Subsidiary Regulations to tackle smoking in films, as this aspect was not clearly outlined in the existing Law.

Thus, the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, under Section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004, has approved the “Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Product, Nicotine Product Promotion, Glamorization, Display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits” Regulations 2024.

Adding that, the approved copy has been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Justice for Gazette.

        7. Land owners selling their lands over increasing cost of building materials

Land owners selling their lands over increasing cost of building materials

Increasing costs of building materials are forcing some aspiring homeowners in the Ashanti region to reconsider their property investments.

Over the past few weeks, cement prices have surged significantly, jumping from an average of 82 cedis to a minimum of 88 cedis.

Cement manufacturers attribute this price hike to the weakening cedi, inflation, and import tariffs.

The sudden increase in prices has left many prospective homeowners feeling frustrated, prompting them to voice their concerns on Luv FM.

Patrick, a distressed caller, revealed that despite purchasing a plot of land in 2019, he has yet to develop it.

He fears that he may not be able to afford construction costs and may ultimately need to sell the land.

“I have done virtually nothing because anytime I plan doing something, I go to the market and ask for the prices of building materials then come and plan but the next time I go because of inflation the prices have gone up,” he narrated.

After the steep rise in prices, Dennis, who was previously involved in the cement business since 2002, has transitioned into construction.

“It wasn’t a bad business at least you could manage it and take care of your family and other things, but as time went on things started changing,” he decried.

Trades Minister K.T. Hammond previously called for cement manufacturers to revert the increased prices of building materials. However, this proposal faced strong opposition from the manufacturers, who warned of potential industry collapse.

Experts point out that the steep increase in the cost of building materials is primarily linked to the price of Clinker, a key ingredient in cement production.

Reportedly, cement manufacturing firms in Ghana procure Clinker from North America and certain regions of Mexico, further driving up the cost of cement.

“If your supplier increases the cost of clinker and your currency is depreciating as it is right now, they have no choice but to just increase the price of it,” said Daniel, a former worker of a cement manufacturing firm.

In the meantime, certain cement companies in the country are embarking on a project to decrease the clinker content in cement and incorporate more clay, with the aim of lowering the price of cement.

This initiative is scheduled to commence in 2025.

        8. Govt receives MoU from bilateral creditors for debt restructuring

Govt receives MoU from bilateral creditors for debt restructuring

Ghana’s bilateral creditors have transmitted a conclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the country’s debt restructuring to the government.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, JOYBUSINESS has learned about this development in the debt restructuring discussions with the bilateral creditors.

It is understood that the document was dispatched to the government on May 23, 2024, via the Official Creditor Committee.

Each of the 22 member countries of the Official Creditor Committee has individually consented to the proposed terms for restructuring Ghana’s debt.

What is next for Government of Ghana?

The government is anticipated to review the MoU and finalize the agreement with the creditors.

However, the agreement might face delays if the government raises objections to certain provisions.

Impact on Ghana’s programme with IMF and Board in June

This advancement could significantly assist the IMF board in approving Ghana’s review within the program. This would lead to the release of approximately $360 million to the country by the end of June 2024.

In April 2024, Abebe Aemro Selassie, the Director of the African Department at the IMF, disclosed that the organization has obtained the necessary financing assurances from bilateral creditors. This will facilitate the completion of Ghana’s second review.

“To be clear, they have provided financing assurances though, and that remains in effect. And so, we are not envisaging that it will be an issue for our ability to conclude the next review and provide the disbursement that is pending”, Selassie said.

          Background

In January 2024, Ghana reached a “tentative agreement” with bilateral creditors as part of the G20 Common Framework debt treatment.

This enabled the country to successfully conclude the first review within the IMF program.

Furthermore, Ghana obtained $600 million along with an additional $300 million from the World Bank through the Development Policy Operation Financing.

This paved the way for the government to move on and work out the MoU between Ghana and its Official Creditor Committee on the terms for restructuring a 5-billion dollar debt.

Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam in April in Washington DC on the sidelines of the IMF Spring Meetings revealed that the bilateral creditors through the Official Creditor Committee have shared the draft document on Ghana’s debt restructuring with members for consideration.

“The Official Creditor Committee has shared the draft document with their members and as soon as they share the document with us and we are okay with that, then we have an agreement.”

IMF MD on Ghana’s deal with Bilateral Creditors

The Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, during a visit to Ghana later this year, revealed that the country was close to signing an MoU with the bilateral creditors on the restructuring of the debt.

“Ghana is in a good place now, because it has advanced negotiations with the bilateral creditors on restructuring of debts”.

“There are very tangible progress towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Bilateral creditors”, she added.

        9. Licensing expenses posing major threat to renewable energy businesses – Study

Licensing expenses posing major threat to renewable energy businesses – Study

Although various forms of licensing exist within the sector, the survey primarily identified issues among companies holding installation and maintenance licenses.

The survey findings were revealed at a Renewable Energy Licensing Forum in Accra, which convened regulatory bodies such as the Energy Commission and regulated companies to “validate findings from the survey and see how these two entities can solve some of the challenges they face”.

“Some of the key issues that emerged are around the delays in licencing approvals; also, some spoke about licencing costs and licencing fees. We had issues around local content requirements,” elaborated Dr. Charles Gyamfi Ofori, a consultant to the study.

As per the survey findings, difficulties with the country’s renewable energy (RE) licensing system have led to repercussions on the licensing status of several RE businesses. More than 40 percent of these companies are reportedly operating without licenses.

Among the 28 surveyed companies, 12 of them, comprising 43 percent, were found to be operating without a valid license. Conversely, 9 companies (32 percent) possessed an active license, while 7 companies (25 percent) had licenses that had expired.

In addressing the licencing challenges and achieving the country’s target and goals for decarbonisation, he urged government to streamline RE companies as well as their operations, stressing the need for a “a good licencing regime that it is not inimical to businesses”.

Furthermore, he emphasized that due to the critical nature of energy as a resource, it is imperative to uphold proper standards regardless of a company’s size or the type of energy it offers.

“Energy is a very sensitive resource and we need to ensure that the standards are being followed; so, whether renewable or non-renewable, they need to get the requisite licencing; and it should be done. Whether it’s a one-person business or a two-person business,” he explained.

“I think the first thing is to create a market for businesses to thrive and operate,” he suggested as one of the means to improving renewable energy integration in the country, adding that competition exists in a well-regulated business space and can also drive a lot of important reforms in the renewables space.

Dr. Ofori reiterated that the implementation of the net metering code has the potential to promote wider adoption of renewable energy. This billing mechanism encourages electricity consumers to augment their electricity purchases with grid-connected renewable energy self-generation.

Despite challenges in the sector, he praised the Commission for its efforts in digitalizing the process and its intentions to introduce more computerized processes into the system, adding that “there is still a lot more room for improvement to ensure some of the delays are majorly curtailed”.

The forum convened representatives from solar companies and regulatory bodies, offering a platform for industry stakeholders to discuss the survey findings, exchange best practices, and explore strategies to enhance the licensing process and advance renewable energy development.

        10. Third Made-In-Ghana Bazaar launched in Accra by Trade Minister

Third Made-In-Ghana Bazaar launched in Accra by Trade Minister

On Thursday, Mr. Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Minister of Trade and Industry, inaugurated the Third Made-In-Ghana Bazaar in Accra, urging the public to support locally manufactured goods.

The three-day event, on the theme: “Promoting Made-In-Ghana Goods and Services for Economic Prosperity,” is being organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Additional supporting entities include the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Association of Ghana Industries.

“I encourage each of you to patronise these Made-in-Ghana products and services, not just out of functionality and price but also with a sense of pride and patriotism,” Mr Hammond said.

“By supporting your local businesses and artisans, you are not only satisfying your needs, but you are also investing in the local economy and strengthening as well as preserving our productive sectors for future generations.”

“Every purchase made here today helps to sustain livelihoods and promote productivity and sustainability in our communities,” the Trade Minister added.

The Made-In-Ghana Bazaar seeks to promote Ghanaian products internationally, using the network of Ghana’s Diplomatic Missions.

The Bazaar, a key initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was introduced in 2018 after the government opted to reinstate the Economic, Trade, and Investment Bureau of the Ministry in 2017, in line with its economic and industrial transformation objectives.

The Bazaar convenes over 150 exhibitors showcasing a diverse array of Ghana’s signature products, both locally and internationally renowned.

Featured items at the Bazaar encompass traditional crafts, artisanal creations, and technologically advanced manufactured goods.

Mr. Hammond emphasized that since 2017, the government, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s leadership, has collaborated closely with the private sector to enhance industrial production and broaden market reach, particularly in industries associated with processing local raw materials.

He said that had been aggressively pursued within the context of a comprehensive Industrial Transformation Agenda, which prioritised import substitution and export diversification as its twin objectives; saying: “Our value addition agenda is reaping impressive results”.

According to the 2023 Annual Statistics Report on Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) released by the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Manufactured and Semi-Processed products accounted for 85.01 percent of the NTEs portfolio in 2023. Meanwhile, the Agricultural and Industrial Art and Craft (Handicrafts) sub-sectors contributed 12.57 percent and 2.43 percent, respectively.

He emphasized that the consistent predominance of manufactured and semi-processed products in the NTEs highlights the significant advantages resulting from the Government’s emphasis on enhancing value addition and industrialization efforts.

He highlighted that among these initiatives, the One District One Factory (1D1F) program stands out as a prime example of the Government’s ability to spur private sector investment, thereby expanding manufacturing and employment opportunities across numerous districts in Ghana.

Mr. Hammond reported that there are currently 321 1D1F Projects in various stages of implementation, with 169 operational factories. These factories collectively employ 169,870 individuals, generating both direct and indirect employment, while also contributing to import substitution and export expansion.

He emphasized that this represents a substantial push to introduce a wide range of Made-in-Ghana products into both domestic and international markets.

He also noted significant progress in attracting foreign and domestic investment partnerships in emerging strategic sectors, such as the Automotive Industry.

“Currently, 11 major global vehicle brands are assembled in Ghana, that is they proudly carry the Made in Ghana label. They include Volkswagen, Toyota, Suzuki, Nissan, Peugeot, Foton, Hyundai, Changan, KIA, Ashok Leyland and Honda,” Mr Hammond.

He said those initiatives were strategic because they placed Ghana in a better position to be competitive domestically as well as in the regional market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).

Madam Mavis Nkansah Boadu, a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in charge of Finance and Administration, said the goal of the bazaar was to facilitate the penetration of Ghanaian products and services into foreign markets through the network of Ghana’s Missions abroad and Diplomatic Missions accredited to Ghana.

That would invariably support the growth of Ghana’s Small and Medium-size Enterprises (SMEs) and provide them with the needed impetus to expand their reach into markets including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

        11. Income inequality deepens as the poor bear heavier tax load than the wealthy – Expert

Income inequality deepens as the poor bear heavier tax load than the wealthy – Expert

Economist and finance expert, Professor Godfred Bokpin, highlights that low and middle-income earners in Ghana bear a heavier tax burden compared to the wealthy.

He argues that these tax policies exacerbate the country’s inherent inequality, widening the gap between the poor and the rich.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Prof. Bokpin expressed concern over the government’s focus on consumption-based taxes, which disproportionately affect low-income individuals, contributing to increased inequality in the nation.

“The way the government taxes the citizens is very important for narrowing inequality. Unfortunately, Ghana has chosen a path that worsens inequality because of the consumption-based taxes that we are focusing on. Such taxes affect the poor and marginalized more than they do the rich,” he said.

He highlighted that taxes based on consumption, particularly those applied to petroleum products, the electronic levy (E-levy), and VAT hikes, disproportionately affect low-income individuals.

According to Oxfam International, the wealthiest ten percent of Ghanaians currently consume 32 percent of the nation’s total output, while the poorest ten percent consume just two percent.

Prof. Bokpin recommended that the government transition from consumption-based taxes to income taxes, targeting the country’s ultra-rich and high-income earners.

He proposed that this strategy could yield $500 million in tax revenue for the government.

“If we can look at our tax regime and ensure that those who have extra income are able to contribute more, it can help us generate more income for the country. If we had made some progress in taxing high-net-worth individuals, we would be able to raise $500 million from the super-rich. This country has many super-rich people. We might assume that times are hard, but all is well with the super-rich in the country. Focusing on taxing them can do a lot for us as a country,” he said.

The economist encouraged the government to seek policies that encourage high-income individuals to pay more taxes.”

        12. Young entrepreneurs urged to pursue sustainable business opportunities

Young entrepreneurs urged to pursue sustainable business opportunities

Entrepreneur Klenam Gakpetor Tsisah has offered advice to young entrepreneurs, urging them to develop business ventures with the potential to withstand the challenges of time.

According to her, this is the only way for these businesses to flourish and deliver the desired benefits.

Mrs. Tsisah shared this advice during a Women’s Empowerment and Leadership program organized by the Science Laboratory Department and the Technical University Science Laboratory Association of Technologists and Technicians (TUSLAT) at the Accra Technical University on Wednesday.

The aim of the event was to empower youth, especially women, to pursue entrepreneurship and create more job opportunities to combat the country’s increasing unemployment rate.

Mrs. Tsisah, the Founder of Klensen Designs, emphasized that many businesses in the country collapsed within a few years of establishment because they were not equipped to withstand the challenges of the business environment.

Furthermore, she noted that such businesses often focused on addressing immediate challenges, rendering them unsustainable once the initial problem was resolved.

“We are fixated on raising businesses that are enough to keep our families going instead of ventures that would keep the world going,” she said.

Mrs. Tsisah encouraged the kids to pursue entrepreneurship, pointing out that businesspeople controlled both Ghana and the modern world.

“Every entrepreneur knows that the biggest opportunities are in solving people and societal problems. There are many problems in this school –somebody needs an ice cream, somebody needs a laptop, somebody needs a shoe.”

“Every need is an opportunity, begin to look for them and begin to provide solutions to them and you are on your way to becoming a great entrepreneur,” she advised.

She added that “we must not forsake humble beginnings. Know that Apple Computers started from the garage, for all you know, all you have to do for your big dream to catch somebody’s attention to want to help you is the small things you have been ignoring to do.”

In order to ensure they accomplished their goals, she also counseled women, especially young ladies, to rise beyond cultural constraints and preconceptions that attempted to prevent them from realizing their full potential.

She pointed out that a lack of dedication had prevented many women from succeeding in the business sector, and she stressed that perseverance and consistency were essential for success.

“We turn to be wishy-washy, we change our plans at every turn, but to achieve much you must have a vision or dream, concentrate on it and work on it until it becomes a reality,” she stressed.

A lecturer, Mrs. Caroline Brown, emphasized that the path of entrepreneurship is challenging, requiring “unwavering commitment and unrelenting spirit” to achieve success.

She encouraged students to harness Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) skills to create ventures that address global challenges.

During the event, three female students were honored for their work in developing biodegradable materials suitable for packaging, aimed at reducing reliance on plastic bags.

Dr. Phylis Otu, Head of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, highlighted that the development of these biodegradables aligns with the school’s efforts to combat plastic waste in the country.

She stressed the enduring environmental impact of plastic waste, particularly polythene bags, and emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly alternatives and proper waste management practices to mitigate these consequences.

Dr. Otu also called upon industry stakeholders to collaborate with the school to scale up initiatives aimed at addressing the nation’s plastic waste challenge.

Professor Alice Mensah, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, urged students to persevere relentlessly in pursuing their entrepreneurial ambitions.

        13. University of Ghana to commercialize plastic-to-fuel conversion project

University of Ghana to commercialize plastic-to-fuel conversion project

With the aim of combating plastic waste, contributing to sustainable energy solutions, and ensuring affordable fuel, the University of Ghana (UG) is set to commercialize its plastic-to-fuel conversion project.

Professor David Dodoo-Arhin, Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST), revealed that the decision to scale up the project followed successful proof of concept trials involving vehicle testing with fuel derived from plastic waste.

He made this announcement during the university’s 7th industry-academia interaction series and exhibition, themed ‘sustainable energy transitions and climate change: the role of partnership’.

“We will be moving into large-scale production. We have successfully proven the concept, and it worked. So, we intend to scale it up and look forward to welcoming potential partners,” he stated.

The research project began in 2018 through a partnership between the School of Engineering Sciences and IAST at the University of Ghana, with assistance from the French embassy.

While there are various methods for recycling plastics, the approach employed in this endeavor is known as valorization. Its objective is to assign value to plastics while gradually reducing their presence in the environment.

On the particular plastics utilised in the conversion process, he said: “We are looking at single-use plastics including polyethylene bags, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, among others”.

He mentioned that his organization has completed installations of the locally constructed reactor or processor for plastics-to-fuel in Osu Alata.

Additionally, they plan to conduct a training program in June to educate approximately 50 youths in the community on the processes of washing, cleaning, and segregating plastics.

“By mid-June, we will start the training project. The training is to empower the youth, especially those who are not employed. They will get into the value chain of collecting the plastics.

“We will train them on how to wash the plastics, how to clean them and segregation, then take them through the process of conversion which is a little bit technical. But currently, we intend to train about 50 community members on this project,” he added.

Furthermore, he elaborated that the objective of the plastic project in Osu is to intercept plastics destined for the ocean and to encourage fishermen to view plastics as a valuable resource for fuel production.

Dr. Dodoo-Arhin described the project as a “game changer” and expressed confidence in the fuel’s affordability advantage, saying: “Looking at what we have done, it’s going to be a little cheaper if we go the way we are running”.

Nana Osei-Bonsu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Private Enterprise Federation, expressed concern over the adverse effects of high electricity costs on businesses during his presentation.

Tanker drivers paid GHS700 salary on table top excluding SSNIT contributions – Report

The Tanker Drivers Association of Ghana has voiced strong discontentment regarding their working conditions.

They revealed that their members receive a modest monthly salary of GH¢700, without any provisions made for their Social Security and National Insurance Trust payments.

According to the Association’s Chairman, Clement Ampadu, this issue has led to strikes.

He elaborated that many drivers still receive their pay in cash, while others are paid via Mobile Money.

Mr. Ampadu underscored the neglected welfare of tanker drivers, prompting the Association to address these concerns.

He noted that while transport owners have failed to address the drivers’ welfare, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has imposed a 3.5 percent levy on the fuel volume transported by each tanker to support drivers.

However, he argued that these funds are diverted to transport owners instead of benefiting the drivers.

He suggested that if these funds were directly deposited into drivers’ bank accounts, their monthly earnings could exceed GH¢ 2,000, significantly improving their financial situation.

In response, the Association’s leadership met with President Akufo-Addo to address the NPA’s practices.

The President instructed the NPA to ensure the funds are allocated to the drivers.

Mr. Ampadu stressed that these funds were intended to support drivers due to their vital role in the petroleum sector but have been misused by transport owners.

Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue, transport owners have been reluctant to release the funds to the drivers.

Mr. Ampadu conveyed these concerns during an interview on Accra-based Neat FM on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
