We can’t blame everything on witches – MC Yeboah speaks on Kwadee’s struggles

Media personality MC Yaa Yeboah has weighed in on the ongoing conversation about Ghanaian musician Okomfo Kwadee’s struggles, stating that despite multiple efforts to support him, the artist seems unwilling to change.

Speaking on the issue, she recalled a viral video of Kwadee that resurfaced last year, reigniting concerns about his well-being.

“It’s truly sad to see someone who has contributed so much to the music industry go through such a crisis,” she lamented. “However, when the news broke last year, I made some calls and discovered that he isn’t helping himself. To rehabilitate someone, the person needs the will to say, ‘I don’t want to continue like this.’ This is not the first time we’ve heard about his condition.”

MC Yaa Yeboah further dismissed the notion that Kwadee’s situation is purely spiritual, insisting that personal responsibility plays a role.

“We can’t blame everything on witches. If you let yourself go, that’s when external forces can affect you. If you watch the video carefully, you can see he’s singing every word of his songs, which shows that he’s still mentally sound. From where I sit, he’s content with his current situation.”

She recounted past interventions made on behalf of the musician, including a time when he was taken off the streets and given an opportunity to revive his career. “There was a time when he was taken off the streets and a concert was organized for him, but later, he told journalists that weed wasn’t his problem, and that he would continue smoking. So, I know he doesn’t see the issues we’re concerned about,” she added.

Yeboah also responded to social media claims that the music industry has abandoned Kwadee, arguing that many individuals have tried to help him over the years. “I’ve seen many comments on social media calling for industry figures to help him. Do you know how many interventions have been made for Kwadee? Many people have sacrificed their time and money to ensure he’s in better condition. But if you don’t have the willpower to change, even divine intervention won’t help,” she emphasized.

Her comments have sparked further debate on whether artists and industry players should take responsibility for their well-being or if more structured support systems are needed to help struggling musicians.

Kwadee, known for his groundbreaking contributions to Ghanaian music, has been a subject of concern after his mental condition escalated in recent years.

Recent videos circulating on social media captured him in a distressed state, performing bare-chested on the streets, appearing frail and unkempt.

IMF probes Ghana’s fiscal policies as govt seeks programme extension

International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation is set to commence discussions with the government today, February 10, 2025, focusing on the state of the economy.

The engagements will revolve around the economy and the 2025 Budget, which, according to sources, is expected to be presented in Parliament by March 2025.

During the five-day visit, the team will also evaluate the government’s progress in negotiations with External Commercial Creditors and efforts to address debts within the Energy Sector.

Additionally, the IMF will seek clarity on the government’s approach to managing the country’s energy challenges and explore discussions on the possible privatization of sections of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

    Fourth Review and IMF Visit

JOYBUSINESS sources indicate that this engagement is not part of a formal Review Mission but will primarily focus on the economy and the 2025 Budget.

The IMF is scheduled to conduct Ghana’s fourth programme review later in the year.

This assessment will be based on fiscal data covering the economy up to December 2024.

    2025 Budget and Economic Discussions

As part of its evaluation, the IMF will examine whether the 2025 Budget aligns with its programme for Ghana, particularly regarding revenue generation.

Ghana’s IMF-supported programme is centered on boosting revenue collection and reducing national debt to sustainable levels.

Reports indicate that the IMF team will seek clarity on how the government plans to address revenue shortfalls should Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson proceed with plans to eliminate taxes such as the Betting Tax, Covid-19 Levy, and E-Levy.

Projections suggest that Ghana could lose approximately 10 billion cedis annually if these tax cuts are implemented.

The delegation will also request further details on strategies for economic recovery and their broader impact on the programme.

Programme Extension and Additional IMF Support

Dr. Forson has recently revealed intentions to push for an extension of the IMF programme to secure additional financial support for economic stabilization.

The visit presents an opportunity for both the government and the IMF to conclude discussions on this proposal.

While the IMF remains open to programme adjustments, it insists that any modifications must align with the overall objectives of the agreement.

    Ghana’s IMF Programme

Since Ghana entered into an agreement with the IMF in May 2023, the country has received approximately US$1.9 billion in financial assistance.

Following the completion of the third review, the IMF described Ghana’s programme performance as generally satisfactory, highlighting significant progress in debt restructuring.

“Economic growth in the first half of 2024 exceeded expectations, inflation has continued to decline, and the fiscal and external positions have showed marked improvements”, it added.

Comedian Funny Face has asked Ghanaian youth to use his life as a lesson to trust in the power of the almighty God.

According to him, he has been through all of life’s phases, and if he is still alive today, it is a testament to the steadfastness of the Lord.

Making this known while speaking at a church event dubbed “The Holy Spirit,” Funny Face recounted how he could drive at top speed from Kasoa to Winneba and then to Cape Coast in a bid to crash to death.

“If God has taken me through this, and I tell you that there is God, believe me. If you don’t believe in God, use my story as an example to know that there is God.

“People say there is no God, but I want to tell you there is God. I have been to the psychiatric hospital; I’ve spent days in prison. I have struggled, and I know that with God, we will be successful in our struggles,” he said.

I am no longer married to Rev. Charlotte Oduro – Apostle Solomon Oduro

The General Overseer of the Royal Victory Family Church, Apostle Solomon Oduro, has publicly confirmed the end of his marriage to Rev. Charlotte Oduro.

The couple, widely recognized, especially Rev. Charlotte Oduro, who is known for her media appearances on relationship matters, had reportedly been living apart for the past three years.

Apostle Oduro further appealed for prayers for both himself and his former wife as they navigate this period.

“At this point, Apostle Oduro sincerely urges his loved ones, supporters, and the Christian community to keep both him and Rev. Charlotte Oduro in their prayers. He remains committed to his divine mission and the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” part of the statement read.

Ghana has no record labels – Kwabena Kwabena

Highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has dismissed the existence of record labels in Ghana, insisting that none truly functions as one.

During an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, the musician was asked by host Kwame Dadzie whether he would consider signing with a local label. His response was met with surprise.

“Is there a record label here in Ghana?” he asked rhetorically before bursting into laughter. When notable labels such as Lynx Entertainment, Highly Spiritual, and Rufftown Records were mentioned, Kwabena Kwabena remained unconvinced.

“No, no, no. I’m sorry, there’s no record label in Ghana,” he insisted.

Despite the work of these labels in scouting and nurturing talents like MzVee, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, Kurl Songx, Mr Drew, Ebony, and Wendy Shay, the industry has yet to produce a label capable of catapulting Ghanaian artists to global superstardom.

Ghana’s biggest international award winners, such as Sarkodie (two BET awards), Samini (MOBO award), and Shatta Wale (six IRAWMA trophies), have achieved their success largely as independent artists. Others, like Stonebwoy (Burniton Music Group and Def Jam), Black Sherif (RBA and EMPIRE), King Promise (Legacy Life Entertainment and Sony), and KiDi (Lynx Entertainment and EMPIRE), operate under a mix of local and international management.

Kwabena Kwabena’s remarks have reignited discussions on whether Ghana’s music industry has the structures needed to support artists on a global scale.

  • Brilliant UCC student unable to sit for 5 years due to rare bone disease

Brilliant UCC student unable to sit for 5 years due to rare bone disease

A rare genetic condition has left 19-year-old Enock Eshun, a Level 100 student at the University of Cape Coast, unable to sit for the past five years.

Diagnosed with Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) at the age of two, his condition gradually worsened, forcing him into a permanent standing position.

In an interview with entertainment blogger Zion Felix, Eshun shared how his early reliance on herbal treatment contributed to his condition’s deterioration. Despite the physical challenges, he chose to remain standing rather than rely on a wheelchair, determined to pursue his education.

Recalling a pivotal moment in 2020, he said:

“After the COVID break, they announced that JHS students should return to school. At that time, I was at my aunty’s place in Abra. On my way back home in a rickshaw, we hit a pothole, and I felt pain in my waist. At that point, we didn’t know anything about the illness, so I ignored it. But as time went on, the pain worsened, and I couldn’t sit. My dad started massaging it, but that was a mistake. I realized I couldn’t sit at all.”

Determined not to let his condition confine him to a wheelchair, he made a bold decision:

“With how the illness is, if I fall and break my hand and leave it like that, it would stay like that forever. And I wanted to further my education. I didn’t want to be sitting in a wheelchair. Even walking around like this, look at how people stare at me—then imagine sitting in a wheelchair. So I had to take the risk to stand so that when it is forming, it will block me in standing, not sitting.”

Now solely under his mother’s care following his father’s passing, Eshun struggles with the financial burden of private transportation to and from school. His condition also affects his ability to eat, as his jaw has stiffened, making it difficult to open his mouth.

FOP is a rare genetic disorder that causes muscles and connective tissues to turn into bone, gradually forming a second “skeleton” that severely limits movement. Symptoms include malformed toes, progressive immobility, muscle swelling, difficulty in speaking and eating, breathing challenges, hearing impairment, and spinal curvature. Currently, there is no cure for the condition.

Pastor Chris speaks on gospel artistes who left his church for fame and money

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, the founder of Christ Embassy, has opened up about the departure of some gospel artistes from his church, attributing it to their increasing focus on fame and money rather than winning souls for Christ.

“Why did it happen? The church was turned into a party place, not a place of prayer where God’s word was truly celebrated. They were not soul winners; they led praise in church, and when it was time for prayers, they were gone,” he explained.

The clergyman revealed that while he initially celebrated these artistes, their refusal to align with his renewed focus on spiritual growth forced him to let them go.

“I initially celebrated them, but when I changed my approach, they refused to change with me, so I had to let them go. God was getting my attention, telling me this was not the way. I told them the Lord wanted us to do the right thing. They had become too popular, and because they were making money… do they know what big money is?” he questioned.

He further stated that the allure of financial gain led these artistes to prioritize their careers over their spiritual responsibilities.

“The little money they were making was too attractive to them, so they didn’t want to follow me. So, they made a detour. I hope they all repent. They are not worship leaders,” he emphasized.

Pastor Chris made these remarks while addressing ongoing discussions about the departure of well-known gospel artistes such as Sinach, Frank Edwards, Joe Praize, and Eben from Christ Embassy after achieving widespread success.

George Opesika Agudey’s passion for luxury cars revisited

Back in 2006, renowned broadcaster Bola Ray had the opportunity to tour the lavish 11-bedroom mansion of businessman and politician George Opesika Agudey, who was then the flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

The visit revealed Agudey’s deep passion for luxury cars, with his impressive collection of high-end vehicles proudly on display.

Agudey, known for his love of automobiles, owned over thirty luxury cars, including brands like Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW, as well as several SUVs. Speaking about his preference, he noted that while he once favored American cars, their maintenance challenges in Ghana made him shift focus.

“American cars used to be my favorite, but servicing them in Ghana is a problem, so I will stick to BMW and Mercedes,” he told Bola Ray.

Among his prized possessions was a Porsche Carrera, which he described as a “sweet” and beautiful car. However, he emphasized the importance of choosing vehicles that are easy to maintain in Ghana.

“In this country, you have to be careful about the cars you buy because eventually, you will face the servicing bills. You have to buy cars that can be handled easily,” he explained.

Beyond his enthusiasm for cars, Agudey also expressed deep patriotism, stressing the need for every Ghanaian to contribute to national development.

“However young or old you are, you must think and feel Ghanaian, and you must also understand that it will take the concerted effort of every single Ghanaian to make sure we have a country called Ghana to live in. We are lucky to be in this part of the world where God is giving us everything free of charge,” he remarked.

Abena Moet rants about men’s selfishness in relationships

Media personality Abena Moet has slammed men, accusing them of being selfish and dishonest in relationships. She claimed that no man has ever had the courage to look her in the eye and truthfully admit to loving another woman.

“Men are selfish! Sometimes, I wonder—no man can ever look me in the eye and claim he truly loves another woman! Even the rich ones I dated, how dare you? No man in my entire life has ever been able to look me in the eye and say, ‘I am with this girl!’ How can you even lie? Most of the time, they will lie! But this one, he has lost all sense of respect for you to the extent that he doesn’t even want to lie anymore!” she vented.

Expressing her frustration, she said men easily forget the sacrifices women make for them when they find someone new.

“After all these years, you didn’t think about everything we’ve been through? You didn’t consider how I’ve been there for you? You met someone new, and I caught you.

“And now, you want to tell me you’re in love with her? No man I’ve been with can ever look me in the eye and say, ‘I’m in love with that girl!’ You must be mad!” she fumed.

Her statements have since sparked conversations online, with some agreeing with her, while others argue that love is unpredictable and that men, just like women, have the right to move on.

A Senior High School (SHS) student has revealed how she and other students had sex in order to raise money.

According to her, they use social media to connect with well-known individuals, such as Members of Parliament (MPs), and, depending on the needs of the customer, they occasionally have sex with one or several persons.

Additionally, the female student revealed that some of these males want to have sex with them during their periods, a practice they refer to as a “rainbow party,” in order to satiate their desires.

“They give you a WhatsApp link on TikTok to join, and afterwards, you pick numbers on the page to engage with people. Sometimes, they send GH¢100 just to buy something and ask you to change your phone if the one you’re using isn’t up to standard. Even though we’re in SHS, we know about threesomes.

“The person would ask you to come with a female friend, which means there would be a threesome. These men are sugar daddies, including top personalities, some of whom are even MPs.

“Sometimes, we also do ‘rainbow parties’ where we go on an outing, and the men have sex with us while we’re menstruating. Some of them even lick the blood. It happens a lot, and we do it,” she narrated in Twi.

Sharing her vision for the wedding, Shugatiti said she prefers an intimate celebration.

I would like to be nominated in the gospel song of the year category – Ras Kuku

Reggae and dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has expressed his desire to be nominated in the Gospel Song of the Year category at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, Ras Kuuku shared that aside from the reggae/dancehall and male vocalist categories, he is also keen on competing in the gospel category.

“Yeah, [I would like to be nominated in] the gospel song of the year [category],” Ras Kuuku stated.

Despite not being a gospel artiste, Ras Kuuku believes his music transcends genres and qualifies for the award. He remains confident that his gospel-themed songs deserve recognition.

However, TGMA currently restricts the ‘Best Gospel Song’ category to only gospel artistes. According to the scheme’s definition, the award goes to “the song adjudged by the Academy, Board, and the General Public as the most popular Christian song, commercially released in the year under review,” with eligibility limited to gospel performers.

Ras Kuuku has released several gospel-inspired songs, including Me Mpaebo, Gyedie featuring MOGMusic, and his latest track Tumi, which features gospel singer Broda Sammy.

He is not wise – Kwame Dzokoto chides Annoh-Dompreh “beating” comment

Ghanaian actor Seth Kwame Dzokoto has joined the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Emeafa Hardcastle, in criticizing the Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, following the MP’s recent remarks urging NPP supporters to defend their party members in confrontations with NDC loyalists.

In a Facebook post on February 7, 2025, Dzokoto condemned Annoh-Dompreh’s statement, stressing that it was inappropriate for someone in his position.

He went further to describe the MP’s actions as “silly” and “unwise.”

“Annoh-Dompreh is not wise as an MP. We are waiting for the ‘don’t be silly’ report from the laboratory to confirm that one,” he commented.

Dzokoto’s remarks align with similar criticism from lawyer Emefa Hardcastle, who also called out the MP over his conduct towards her in parliament weeks

    What Frank Annoh-Dompreh said

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh cautioned that tensions would escalate in Parliament if the NDC blocked the Electoral Commission (EC) from re-collating the December 2024 Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.

He emphasized that obstructing the process would fuel ongoing demonstrations and called on NPP supporters to step in whenever conflicts arise between their members and the NDC.

“If you are a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and you come across a fellow party member fighting with a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), step in and help your fellow party member,” he said.

He also added, “If they (NDC) are not reasonable enough to accept that, based on the collated results, we have won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, the NDC MPs will not know peace in Parliament. We will continue to demonstrate. So, if they do not allow the EC to re-collate, they will not know peace. We are giving the EC one week to declare the results. Why did the NDC burn the pink sheets? Ablekuma North is for the NPP. We are winning,” he declared.

Al Anderson recounts financial struggles of Bob Marley’s Band

Former guitarist for Bob Marley and the Wailers, Al Anderson, has opened up about the financial struggles the band faced under its management, revealing that members were not properly compensated for their work, especially live performances.

Speaking on GhanaWeb’s Talkertainment with David Antwi on February 7, 2025, Anderson disclosed that while Bob Marley received his share of the earnings, the band members were sidelined when it came to financial rewards.

“We were having a lot of problems with management because a lot of money was being made. The record company was making theirs, and all the lawyers were making theirs. Bob was making his portion too. But they kind of took advantage of the band members,” he revealed.

He highlighted how key members, including the Barrett Brothers, Wire Tyrone, himself, and the I-Trees, never saw payments for their contributions to the band’s live albums.

“This means the Barrett Brothers, Wire Tyrone, myself, I-Trees, and nobody in the band got paid for the live albums,” he stated.

The situation, according to Anderson, deteriorated even further after Bob Marley’s passing, as lawyers and accountants exploited the band, treating them as mere workers rather than respected musicians.

“There was a period where we were getting money when Bob was alive. When he passed, the lawyers and accountants went crazy. They lost their minds. They just thought we were a bunch of slaves,” he said.

He accused key industry figures, including Chris Blackwell’s legal and financial team—Marvin Zoltan, David Steinberg, and former manager Don Taylor—of prioritizing profits over the band’s independence.

“And they were going to handle us like plantation owners. Chris Blackwell, that was his lawyer, and his accountants, Marvin Zoltan, David Steinberg, and his manager, Don Taylor, he was a sharp guy, but he was along for the ride. Not to make the group strong enough to be independent as a band. He was all about the money,” he added.

Anderson’s revelations shed light on the long-standing financial disputes within the legendary reggae group, raising questions about how musicians from iconic bands are treated in the industry.

Sista Afia calls out TGMA for ignoring her music

Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has voiced her disappointment over the lack of recognition from the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), revealing that she has not been fully satisfied with her nominations over the years.

According to the “Jeje” hitmaker, despite the song’s massive success, it failed to earn her a TGMA nomination. It was only after releasing “Corner Corner” and “Weather” in 2021 that she finally received some acknowledgment.

“Since then, I haven’t received any nominations, and that has been a great concern to me,” she lamented, expressing her frustration over what she perceives as a lack of appreciation for her contributions to the music industry.

Her remarks have sparked conversations among fans and industry players about the criteria for TGMA nominations and the challenges some artists face in gaining recognition.

Despite the setbacks, Sista Afia remains hopeful for this year’s awards. With her 2024 release, ‘2 Things,’ she is targeting nominations in three categories: ‘Highlife Song of the Year,’ ‘Highlife Artiste of the Year,’ and ‘Collaboration of the Year.’

Beyond her music career, Sista Afia emphasized the importance of artistes giving back to society.

According to her, musicians have a moral obligation to use their influence for the greater good, whether by donating resources to schools, supporting vulnerable individuals, or driving social initiatives.

“As musicians, we can contribute when we come together as a group to help society in many ways. We can print books for students who lack study materials, support disabled children, or assist anyone in need.

“We shouldn’t just stay at home writing songs; we need to actively create positive change in society. Even the little we can do means a lot,” she stated.

He stressed that this will enable the ministers to assist their substantive counterparts in executing government duties effectively.

On February 7, 2025, during a ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Mahama shared that four more deputy ministers will soon be nominated to complete his promised team of 60 ministers.

Notable among them were Kwabena Mintah-Akandoh as Health Minister, Sam George as Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Kofi Adams as Sports Minister, and Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed as Minister for Environment and Science. “The hallmark of this government will be modesty. I expect the best from all of you. You must use your resources wisely to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people,” he stressed.

Additionally, President Mahama issued a directive for strict controls on government appointees’ travel. “I have asked the Chief of Staff to ban all non-essential travels. Any travel must be cleared with the Chief of Staff. Such trips, if approved, must be done in modesty, no first class,” he declared.

Rawlings Foundation demands apology, retraction from NPP MP over disrespectful remarks

The J.J. Rawlings Foundation is demanding that Parliament investigate offensive comments made by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament against the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle.

In a formal petition, the Foundation is calling for the offending MP to acknowledge responsibility and retract the defamatory and inflammatory remarks.

The Foundation expressed its disbelief over the “unprintable” words uttered on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, January 4, 2025. These comments, according to the Foundation, were not only an attack on the Rawlings family but also an indictment on Parliament and the entire nation. They are calling for urgent action from Parliament to address the matter.

“The toxic and untruthful comments exposed a desire by a select few members of Parliament to provoke a toxic atmosphere within the political environment,” the Foundation stated.

They further emphasized that President Rawlings, as the first President of the Fourth Republic, played a crucial role in nurturing Ghana’s political dispensation and deserved respect.

The Foundation also criticized the treatment of Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who has been an effective MP since 2017.

They condemned the disrespectful and misogynistic behavior displayed by the colleague MP, which they believe undermines the position of women in politics.

In conclusion, the Foundation, which represents millions of Ghanaians, has called for the offending MP to take full responsibility for his actions, retract the comments, and issue an apology, asserting that the remarks were “despicable, unconscionable, and disgraceful.”

The Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin
    Speaker
    Parliament of Ghana
    Accra

    February 4, 2025

    Dear Right Honourable Speaker,

PETITION TO INVESTIGATE UNSAVOURY COMMENTS ON FORMER PRESIDENT RAWLINGS AND HONOURABLE ZANETOR AGYEMAN-RAWLINGS

The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has learnt with absolute disbelief the unprintable words uttered by a New Patriotic Party member of parliament against the late former President of the Republic, Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday January 4, 2025.

Mr. Speaker, the toxic and untruthful comments were not only an indictment on Parliament but on the entire country. It exposed a desire by a select few members of Parliament to hide under the guise of the August House to provoke a toxic atmosphere within the political environment.

President Rawlings was the first President of the Fourth Republic and was instrumental in nurturing the current political dispensation which is the longest and most successful in our country’s history. His exceptional sacrifice, selfless leadership and unrelenting commitment to rebuilding our political and socio-economic fabric was evident from his first emergence onto Ghana’s political scene on May 15th 1979, and throughout his chairmanship of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), into the 4th Republic as Ghana’s First President of the Fourth Republic.

He took difficult decisions that Ghana required to uplift her out of political and economic turmoil. He took a tough stance on right and wrong at a time when Ghana had lost her societal moral fibre. He was indeed ‘Ghana’s Strong Man’ which allowed others the luxury to be weak on unpopular and tough decisions.

Internationally President Rawlings is admired and recognized for his commitment to a participatory leadership approach and his anti-corruption credentials. It is totally dishonest for anyone to attempt to reduce his legacy in one misguided moment of flippancy.

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has been an effective, efficient and reliable MP since 2017. More so holding on to her seat as an opposition member of parliament and winning three times in a row is no small feat. For a colleague MP to crudely shut her down during Parliamentary proceedings exposes his misogyny and bias against women, but more so, it is a matter of gross abuse and disrespect that cannot be ignored, Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, it is disheartening and disturbing when the House that is expected to protect the image and reputation of past leaders of this country who worked hard to maintain and protect institutions like Parliament, receive abuse and offensive behaviour as occurred on Tuesday January 4, 2025.

As an institution formally established to record, protect and highlight the enduring legacy of former President Jerry John Rawlings, we on behalf of millions of Ghanaians formally petition the Parliament of Ghana to investigate the matter and compel the offending member of Parliament to acknowledge responsibility and retract the defamatory remark which was inflammatory, despicable, unconscionable and disgraceful.

Your urgent action on the matter will be appreciated.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings
    (Executive Director)

President John Mahama has confirmed that the last group of deputy ministers will be appointed in the coming days, finalizing his ministerial team as pledged.

At a swearing-in ceremony for newly approved ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 7, 2025, he emphasized that 13 deputy ministers had already been nominated earlier in the week after consultations with relevant sector ministers.

These nominees are now awaiting approval from Parliament.

“In the coming days, I will nominate the last four deputy ministers, bringing the total number of ministers to 60, as I assured the people of Ghana,” he stated.

The President assured Ghanaians that he is focused on running a smart and effective government. He explained that cutting down the number of ministers is important, but what really matters is having the right plans, fresh ideas, and dedicated efforts to get things done efficiently.

“An efficient government will not build itself. It requires intentional effort and dedication. I, therefore, expect nothing but the very best from all of you,” he told the newly sworn-in ministers.

Ghana’s Roads Authority Act put on hold amid stakeholder concerns

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has decided to pause the implementation of the National Roads Authority Act 2024 (Act 1118) so they can engage with stakeholders further.

In a statement released on February 7, 2025, the Ministry explained that this decision came after hearing concerns from important groups involved.

The Act, which was passed by Parliament in July 2024, was meant to improve how Ghana manages its roads by combining the Ghana Highway Authority, the Department of Urban Roads, and the Department of Feeder Roads into one group for better coordination.

The Ministry assured the public that they remain dedicated to making the road sector more efficient while addressing the concerns raised.

“The decision to suspend the implementation of the NRA Act is a result of the Government’s commitment to addressing major concerns raised by key stakeholders. The Ministry reassures the public of its commitment to streamlining operations and enhancing coordination in the road sector,” the statement read.

  • Withheld 2024 WASSCE results to be released by February 28 – WAEC

Withheld 2024 WASSCE results to be released by February 28 – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council WAEC has confirmed that all withheld results from the 2024 WASSCE will be released by February 28, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on February 7, the council stated that its investigations into suspected malpractice and irregularities are almost complete.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, assured that the probe would be finalized in time for the results to be published as scheduled.

“The Council has continued its hearing for the affected candidates and has been releasing results as appropriate. The Council wishes to assure all stakeholders that all cases of malpractice will be finalized, and results released by February 28,” Mr. Kapi stated.

The promise to release the results comes after a legal fight and threats from the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to hold protests over the delay.

Although the exams were generally successful, WAEC found several cases of cheating, including copying answers, hiding cheat sheets, sneaking in phones, and working together in the exam hall.

Acknowledging the legal situation, Mr. Kapi said the rise in cheating cases was concerning and called on everyone involved to help prevent it in order to protect the exam’s reputation.

WAEC has held back over 10,500 results due to suspected cheating.

In response to the growing frustration from parents and candidates, lawyer Martin Kpebu took legal action on behalf of those affected.

On January 30, 2025, the High Court in Accra ordered WAEC to release the results immediately.

The court ruled that WAEC’s decision to withhold the results without clear reasons was unjustified, as the reasons given were ambiguous, citing both “alleged examination malpractice” and “alleged irregularities.”

Justice Ali Baba Abature, who presided over the case, emphasized that invigilators reported no malpractices or irregularities during the examination.

  • Ghana’s Hajj quota increased by 1,000 pilgrims

Ghana’s Hajj quota increased by 1,000 pilgrims

Saudi Arabia has increased Ghana’s Hajj pilgrimage quota from 4,000 to 5,000.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Ghana Hajj Task Force Chairman, Alhaji Collins Dauda, revealed that the task force leveraged the recent Hajj conference in Saudi Arabia to negotiate better terms with service providers for Ghanaian pilgrims.

The chairman disclosed that this year’s Hajj fare has been set at GH¢62,000, equivalent to $4,130, based on an exchange rate of GH¢15 per dollar.

He pointed out that this marks a 17.3% decrease from last year’s GH¢75,000 fare.

According to Alhaji Dauda, the reduction aligns with the President’s directive to make the Hajj pilgrimage, a key pillar of Islam, more affordable for Ghanaian Muslims.

He also emphasized that the move was in line with a campaign promise made by NDC presidential candidate John Mahama ahead of the 2024 elections.

“Through strategic negotiations and teamwork, the task force has successfully achieved a significant reduction in the 2025 Hajj fare,” he stated.

“This represents a considerable cut of about $2,000,” he added.

Alhaji Dauda further disclosed that the previous administration left behind an outstanding debt of $5.41 million, prompting the government to launch an investigation.

The debt covers $446,933 owed to catering service providers, $4,429,260 in flight costs, and approximately $533,333 allocated for education and training services.

Seth Ibrahim Ayi, the Public Relations Officer of the Hajj Agents Association, welcomed the reduction in fares, expressing optimism that it would encourage greater participation in the pilgrimage.

Each year, millions of Muslims worldwide journey to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj, a religious obligation observed in the sacred month of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar.

Pilgrims undertake a series of rituals, each carrying deep spiritual significance and purpose.

Miss Côte d’Ivoire 2025 ditches artificial hair enhancements

An African beauty pageant is breaking tradition to make this year’s competition stand out.

Miss Côte d’Ivoire 2025 has introduced a new rule banning contestants from wearing weaves, wigs, or hair extensions during the preselection stages. Instead, participants must showcase their natural hair—whether long, short, braided, or shaved.

In addition to the hair policy, the pageant has slightly lowered the minimum height requirement from 1.68 meters to 1.67 meters and increased the age limit from 25 to 28 years.

The organizers say the move is aimed at promoting natural African beauty and encouraging women to embrace their authentic selves rather than relying on artificial enhancements.

Victor Yapobi, president of the organizing committee, cited past Miss Universe contestants who confidently wore short natural hair, proving that beauty is not limited to a particular standard.

The decision was also influenced by Marlene Kouassi, the 2022 Miss Côte d’Ivoire winner, who competed with short hair. The initiative seeks to inspire self-acceptance and confidence among contestants.

The crowning of the Miss Cote d’Ivoire 2025 will take place on June 26, 2025.

        2. Nacee is a producer, not a gospel artiste – Ras Kuuku

Nacee is a producer, not a gospel artiste – Ras Kuuku

Ghanaian reggae artiste Ras Kuuku has challenged Nacee’s classification as a gospel musician, arguing that his body of work extends beyond the gospel genre.

Speaking with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, Ras Kuuku criticized the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Board for restricting gospel award categories to only gospel musicians. He questioned whether Nacee truly fits that label.

“Nacee is not a gospel musician; Nacee is a producer,” he asserted.

DJ Slim, however, pointed out Nacee’s extensive gospel catalog, but Ras Kuuku countered with examples of his secular compositions, including Kwen Kwen, a campaign song for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He also cited tracks like Boys Boys, Dondo, and Paddy Paddy as evidence of Nacee’s versatility beyond gospel music.

The TGMA defines the ‘Best Gospel Song’ category as the most popular Christian song of the year, exclusively awarded to gospel artistes based on public excitement and support.

Meanwhile, Ras Kuuku claims his track Me Mpaebo ranks among the biggest gospel songs of the past decade.

His remarks suggest that Nacee’s involvement in secular music has created a divided perception of his musical identity among fans.

        3. Ras Kuuku hails ‘Ye Tali Mu’ as his most impactful collaboration

Ras Kuuku hails ‘Ye Tali Mu’ as his most impactful collaboration

Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has named Ye Tali Mu as his all-time favorite collaboration, describing it as the biggest dancehall song in Ghana.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, Ras Kuuku highlighted the song’s significance, particularly its influence on his career.

“I’ve always said Ye Tali Mu is the biggest dancehall song to come out of Ghana. When it comes to dancehall, Ghana or outside Ghana, it is one of the songs that projected reggae and dancehall in Ghana,” he stated.

The track, which features Shatta Wale, stands out as a defining moment in his music journey, he added.

When asked about Eyeball, his collaboration with Samini, Ras Kuuku acknowledged the song’s appeal but maintained that Ye Tali Mu had a much greater impact on his career.

“But the impact that Ye Tali Mu had on my music journey, my Eyeball song cannot compare, not even 2%,” he noted.

Beyond dancehall, Ras Kuuku has also worked with gospel artists like MOGMusic and Broda Sammy, as well as Kwesi Amewuga, the late Ebony, Kofi Kinaata, and Stonebwoy.

Lil Smart in police custody for defamation, cyberstalking charges

Former Marlian Music signee, Lil Smart, has been taken into police custody over allegations of making false claims against his former boss, Naira Marley.

Authorities have charged him with criminal defamation, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and disseminating false information.

His arrest stems from a series of accusations he posted on Instagram in December 2024, where he alleged that Naira Marley and fellow artist Zinoleesky had attempted to kidnap him.

In the now-viral post, Lil Smart claimed that if anything happened to him, Naira Marley should be held accountable. He further accused the musician of bribing police officers in Lagos, engaging in credit card fraud, and stealing $300 from him.

However, in an official statement released on Thursday, February 6, police authorities confirmed that Lil Smart later admitted in writing that his claims were fabricated and lacked any supporting evidence.

The arrest followed a petition from Naira Marley’s legal team, prompting an investigation by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Unit. Officers detained Lil Smart on January 28, 2025, at his residence in Megamound Estate, Ajah, Lagos, where they reportedly retrieved evidence related to the case.

Law enforcement officials have cautioned against making false allegations, stressing that such actions could have far-reaching consequences, including eroding public trust in the justice system.

Lil Smart’s accusations had previously sparked intense debate online, with some social media users sympathizing with him while others demanded proof of his claims against Naira Marley and Zinoleesky.

Mahama apponts Raymond Archer as acting Deputy EOCO boss

President John Mahama has named Raymond Archer, a former investigative journalist and intelligence expert, as the acting Deputy Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The appointment aligns with the President’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative, which seeks to reclaim state assets obtained through corrupt means.

Bringing decades of experience in intelligence and investigations, Archer is expected to play a key role in strengthening EOCO’s operations against financial crimes.

For years, he has been deeply involved in anti-corruption efforts. Since 2019, he has led the Opponent’s Research Group (ORG), a covert investigative team focused on exposing financial irregularities and organized crime.

His connection with EOCO dates back 14 years when he worked as a lead United Nations consultant in drafting the Economic and Organised Crime Act (2010, Act 804), which formally established the institution. His return in a leadership capacity is anticipated to enhance its investigative reach.

With a career spanning over 15 years in national security, intelligence, and risk consulting, Archer has worked extensively across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

        8. Politics won’t take me away from arts – Dumelo

Politics won’t take me away from arts – Dumelo

Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has reaffirmed his dedication to the creative arts industry, emphasizing that his political career will not diminish his passion for the sector.

Speaking at the launch of Celestine Donkor’s 11th Celestial Praiz concert on February 6, 2025, Dumelo expressed appreciation for the gospel musician’s work and promised to always support her.

“Despite the fact that I am an MP now and in the Agric Ministry, I will not forget where I came from, which is the arts sector. I will always be an arts person. I will always be a creative person, and if we don’t develop our own, who else will do it for us?” he stated.

Dumelo’s remarks come at a time when many Ghanaian creatives have expressed concerns about the level of government support for the industry. His words have been met with optimism, especially among those advocating for more investment in local talent, film production, and creative entrepreneurship.

Having built a successful career in acting before transitioning into politics, Dumelo remains a respected voice within the arts community. Many believe his dual roles in governance and entertainment position him well to champion policies that benefit the sector.

His commitment to the industry aligns with ongoing calls for the government to prioritize the creative economy, which has the potential to generate employment and boost Ghana’s cultural identity on the global stage.

Over the past few years, Dumelo has been actively involved in agriculture and has encouraged the youth to take the sector seriously.

He currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

As stakeholders continue to push for reforms and greater financial backing, Dumelo’s pledge signals hope for a future where the arts and governance work hand in hand to foster growth in the sector.

        9. Your life will end badly – Ogidi Brown to Fameye

Your life will end badly – Ogidi Brown to Fameye

Ogidi Brown has placed a curse on Fameye, predicting that his music career will decline just like that of a certain artist who has recently been the focus of social media debates.

According to him, Fameye repaid his goodwill with betrayal despite receiving nothing but kindness, and as a result, his downfall will be disastrous.

His remarks came after Fameye’s interview with Delay on February 2, 2025.

In a video shared on social media on February 7, 2025, an enraged Ogidi Brown declared, “Fameye, I know you will end badly, and you’ll be shocked because you’ll end up like a musician who’s currently in the news for all the wrong reasons. And if you ever mention my name again, God will punish you.”

He further stated, “We shall see. You will reap what you’ve sown…”

Though Ogidi Brown did not disclose which artist he was referring to, many online users have flooded his comment section, speculating different names.

Meanwhile, some netizens have criticized Ogidi Brown for his outburst, arguing that nothing Fameye said in his interview with Delay warranted such harsh words.

During his appearance on The Delay Show on February 2, 2025, Fameye revealed that he and Ogidi Brown had resolved their differences at Antoa after being summoned by an elder.

“Before the issue between Ogidi and me, there were signs, but we didn’t notice. But we’ve settled it at Antoa. I wasn’t in Ghana at that time, so some of my family members represented me there. Later, when I got back, I went there. Everything came down to me giving him money, and I even paid more than the $50,000,” Fameye explained.

In 2021, Ogidi Brown went live on Facebook, accusing Fameye of owing him $50,000 and demanding repayment within two weeks.

Following Fameye’s departure from his record label, Ogidi Brown intensified his grievances, resorting to curses.

He insisted that the Nothing I Get hitmaker had refused to settle the $50,000 debt, which was part of their exit agreement.

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to get the Anomabu Fisheries College in the Central Region up and running after presenting his government’s first budget in March.

During his Thank You tour in Anomabu on Thursday, February 6, Mahama shared that he has asked the Fisheries Minister, Emelia Arthur, to work with the Finance Minister to secure funds for the project in the upcoming budget.

The college was started by the NDC government in 2011 but was left unfinished after Mahama left office. The college is meant to train 300 students in sustainable fishing and fish farming. The facility includes classrooms, the principal’s house, fish ponds, boreholes, and a water pumping station.

President Mahama and Veep, touring the location of abandoned Anomabu Fisheries College

President John Dramani Mahama assured that only a few things are left to complete the Anomabu Fisheries College.

He explained that the remaining work mainly involves adding furniture, teaching materials, and doing roadworks on the campus to make the college fully operational.

“This is why we have committed to completing all abandoned projects, regardless of which government started them,” Mahama stated. “We will secure funds for the completion, and once phase one is done, we will move to phase two.”

Following the President’s instruction to the Fisheries and Finance Ministers, the project will be given top priority in the upcoming budget to ensure it is completed in the next few months.

        12. UCC SRC provides financial aid to 28 students for 2024/2025 academic year

UCC SRC provides financial aid to 28 students for 2024/2025 academic year

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), led by Abraham Norman Nortey, has once again affirmed its dedication to student welfare by providing financial assistance to 28 students for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Thanks to the SRC’s Life Insurance Policy, these students will have their tuition fees and allowances completely covered, easing the financial strain that could otherwise impede their academic progress.

Under Norman’s leadership, the SRC has continuously shown its commitment to ensuring that no student is left behind because of financial difficulties. By covering the costs of education for these students, the SRC not only offers relief to those struggling financially but also creates an environment that encourages academic success.

Addressing the initiative, SRC President Abraham Norman Nortey reiterated the council’s dedication to prioritizing students’ well-being and academic achievement. He explained that the financial assistance program was specifically designed to help students facing economic challenges continue their studies without worrying about financial burdens.

“Your academic success is our priority, and we remain committed to supporting you every step of the way,” Mr. Norman Nortey assured the students.

The 28 students who received this support expressed their sincere appreciation to the SRC for stepping in at a crucial time. Several of them were at risk of having to defer their studies due to financial hardship, but this assistance has given them renewed motivation to pursue academic excellence.

One beneficiary, a second-year student from the Faculty of Education, shared how the initiative had alleviated a huge financial burden on her family. “I was about to defer my studies because my parents couldn’t afford my fees. This intervention is a lifesaver, and I’m so thankful to the SRC for this incredible support,” she said.

Another student from the College of Humanities and Legal Studies emphasized how the financial assistance would allow him to focus solely on his academics, free from the stress of financial worries.

The SRC Life Insurance Policy remains a cornerstone of the council’s efforts to improve student welfare. The SRC has promised to continue advocating for and implementing initiatives that tackle the challenges students face.

In addition to financial support, the Norman-led SRC has launched several initiatives aimed at enhancing student well-being, such as academic support programs, mental health awareness campaigns, and advocacy for improved student services across the university.

While the SRC has taken significant steps to help students, it has also called on other stakeholders, including the university administration, alumni, and corporate organizations, to join forces with them in sustaining these initiatives. The aim is to provide assistance to even more students struggling with financial difficulties, ensuring they can successfully complete their education.

As the academic year unfolds, the Norman-led SRC continues to set a high standard for student leadership, showing a strong commitment to ensuring that every UCC student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their financial situation.

This initiative is a powerful example of the SRC’s steadfast dedication to empowering students and promoting academic excellence.

        13. Boakye Agyarko lists concerns fueling calls for rebranding

Boakye Agyarko lists concerns fueling calls for rebranding

A former flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Minister of Energy, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has called for the urgent rebranding of the party, emphasizing that it has lost its core values and is heading in the wrong direction.

In a statement seen by the media, Agyarko argued that the party’s identity and sense of direction have been compromised, leading to the call for reforms.

“The urgent call for the NPP to be rebranded is a tacit admission that we have deviated from our core values, mores, beliefs, and ideals, and have lost our sense of direction and identity,” Agyarko stated. “The manifestations of this loss are what is driving this call for reforms and rebranding. The desire to rebrand is a tacit recognition that our current brand is tarnished, and we are unhappy with the current state of affairs.”

Agyarko further expressed his concern that the ideological brilliance of the party had been “bleached,” leading fewer people to support it. He stressed that the NPP is a legacy, rooted in the struggles and sacrifices of past generations, and must return to its foundational values.

In his statement, Agyarko emphasized the importance of the NPP returning to its core principles, warning that without them, the party would be engaging in ineffective actions. He quoted John Hannaford, stating that “our values are fundamental truths. They are central to who we are. They point us in the right direction. We must ensure they remain our compass through changing times.”

The former flagbearer hopeful highlighted the necessity of using lessons from the party’s past to shape its future, saying, “We do not intend to merely sigh from the past. That would be reactionary. We should use these teachings and lessons of our past to more intensely celebrate the present and reshape the future.”

Agyarko outlined 11 key values that he believes the NPP has abandoned, resulting in a loss of its true identity. These include respect for and defense of the rule of law, commitment to building a free and democratic system of government where all citizens can contribute to the nation’s welfare, ensuring freedom from dictatorship and oppression, protection of fundamental rights and individual freedoms, with every individual deserving respect and dignity.

He also emphasized security of private property and economic rights, echoing Thomas Paine’s assertion that “no one ought to be deprived of it except in cases of evident public necessity.” Agyarko stressed the importance of decentralizing power from the central government to local levels for more effective policy implementation, promoting an efficient market economy and individual enterprise while ensuring safety nets to protect the poor and vulnerable.

Other values he mentioned included strengthening democratic institutions to sustain good governance, recognizing the role of religious, cultural, and civil society institutions in national development, including religious organizations and the institution of chieftaincy. Agyarko also underscored the need for a fair distribution of national resources to prevent monopolization and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.

He called for ensuring access to equal education, healthcare, and employment for all Ghanaians, and creating an enabling environment for private enterprise to thrive, allowing both citizens and foreign investors to invest without fear of bureaucratic restrictions, fostering wealth creation and prosperity for the people.

Agyarko’s call for a return to these core values aims to restore the NPP’s true identity and credibility, hoping to realign the party with the principles that once made it a powerful force in Ghana’s political landscape.

        14. Our strength to overcome any challenge lies in our diversity – Mahama to Ghanaians

Our strength to overcome any challenge lies in our diversity – Mahama to Ghanaians

President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the power of national unity, emphasizing that Ghana’s strength in tackling challenges comes from its diverse people.

During a ‘Thank You’ tour in the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, he reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring equitable development across all regions.

Addressing traditional leaders, residents, and party supporters, President Mahama credited the collective efforts of Ghanaians for the success of their campaign and called for a renewed spirit of togetherness.

“I wish to emphasise that I’m a president for all Ghanaians, and I’m committed to fostering unity and inclusivity and ensuring that no region, no community, or no person is left behind,” he stated.

He urged citizens to look beyond past divisions and collaborate for national progress, stressing that Ghana’s true strength lies in its ability to embrace diversity.

“Our strength lies in our diversity, and together, we will overcome any challenges on our path to progress,” he said.

Mahama also acknowledged the Central Region’s pivotal role in Ghana’s history, economy, and education. He assured its people that his administration would ensure they benefit fairly from national development.

“As President, I also identify as a son of this region and commit to honouring and recognising its importance, whether in education, infrastructure, health care, or economic empowerment. We will work together to elevate the lives of all those who call this region home, and I can assure you, the people of the Central Region, you will get your fair share of the national cake,” he affirmed.

Annoh-Dompreh warns EC to declare Afriyieh winner in Ablekuma North or face unrest

Member of Parliament for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to step in and defend their fellow party members whenever they face confrontations with members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking passionately during a video shared by GHOne TV on Facebook on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Annoh-Dompreh urged party members to show solidarity and defend the NPP’s interests at all costs.

“If you are a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and you come across a fellow party member fighting with a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), step in and help your fellow party member,” he stated, calling for unity and a show of strength within the party.

The Minority Chief Whip went on to address the ongoing dispute surrounding the December 2024 Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

He issued a one-week ultimatum for the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare Akua Afriyieh, the NPP candidate, as the winner of the election. He firmly rejected any calls for a re-run, alleging that the NDC had destroyed vital electoral documents, including pink sheets, in an attempt to undermine the election results.

“If the NDC is not reasonable enough to accept that, based on the collated results, we have won the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, the NDC MPs will not know peace in Parliament,” he warned.

“We will continue to demonstrate. If they do not allow the EC to re-collate, they will not know peace. We are giving the EC one week to declare the results. Why did the NDC burn the pink sheets? Ablekuma North is for the NPP. We are winning,” Annoh-Dompreh concluded.

His remarks highlight the growing tensions surrounding the Ablekuma North election, with the NPP determined to assert its victory and ready to confront the NDC on any perceived electoral wrongdoings.

Tensions are still high in Ablekuma North as both NPP’s Akua Afriyieh and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubyn have put up billboards claiming victory, even though the Electoral Commission (EC) has not yet announced the final results.

The re-collation of the election results has been delayed because of constant disputes and chaos, creating a lot of uncertainty. As of now, Ablekuma North is the only constituency from the December 7 election without a declared winner.

The EC has yet to set new dates for when the results will be re-collated and finalized.

        16. Trade flow restored as Ghana Customs clears 1,000 containers in 10 days

Trade flow restored as Ghana Customs clears 1,000 containers in 10 days

Ghana’s trade sector is seeing renewed efficiency after the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) successfully cleared 1,000 containers at the Tema Port within ten days, reducing the backlog from 4,600 to 3,600.

According to the Acting Head of the Ghana Customs Laboratory, Samuel Akrofi, the congestion, which began in July 2024 due to scanner breakdowns, had severely hampered cargo processing, slowing trade and increasing port congestion.

“The breakdown of scanning equipment led to delays in processing cargo. By December, the number of containers at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) had risen to 4,600. The situation was getting out of hand,” Akrofi explained on the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) Eye on Port programme.

Efforts to fix the scanners, including flying in experts, did not yield immediate results, prompting Customs to introduce new clearance measures in January 2025. The revised strategy involved transferring uncleared containers to internal container depots (ICDs), where they underwent manual inspection instead of scanning.

“We needed to clear the backlog without compromising security, so we transferred the containers to depots like the Golden Jubilee Terminal for further checks,” Akrofi noted, emphasizing that rigorous manual inspections ensured compliance.

Beyond clearing the backlog, Customs is working to enhance efficiency in cargo processing through the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS), a digital platform aimed at reducing paperwork, strengthening risk management, and improving inter-agency collaboration.

Additionally, Customs has shifted to a supply chain-based monitoring system rather than focusing solely on border checks. This approach, aided by technology, allows for real-time shipment tracking and risk profiling, ensuring trusted traders experience faster clearance while high-risk shipments undergo stricter scrutiny.

Akrofi further revealed that Customs is leveraging data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to improve compliance monitoring.

“Most shipments are compliant, but a few pose security risks. Our job is to identify and intercept those without disrupting the overall clearance process,” he stated.

With these improvements, Ghana’s trade sector is expected to operate more smoothly, boosting business confidence and government revenue collection.

        17. Mahama to engage contractor, Finance Ministry to complete €48m stalled market project in Takoradi

Mahama to engage contractor, Finance Ministry to complete €48m stalled market project in Takoradi

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to completing the stalled Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project, assuring residents that his government will take immediate steps to revive construction.

During a visit to the project site as part of his thank-you tour in the Western Region following the 2024 elections, Mahama emphasized that discussions would be held with the contractor and the Finance Ministry to set new timelines for resuming work.

“We are here to inspect and assess the status of the project. We will return to Accra and on Friday, we will meet the contractor and Minister of Finance to discuss how to complete the Takoradi Market Circle Redevelopment project,” Mahama stated.

He further assured traders and residents that soon, engineers and workers would be back on-site to see the project through to completion.

The redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle, initiated in 2020 under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a cost of €48 million, was expected to be completed in 2023 but has since stalled. The first phase of the project, undertaken by the Italian construction firm Messrs Contracta Costruzioni Italia SLR, remains unfinished.

Once completed, the modern market facility will feature 2,408 stores, 33 restaurants and food courts, bulk-breaking areas, a visitors’ car park, a police and fire station, and a post office. Additional amenities will include a clinic, administrative offices, a daycare center, banking spaces, a waste separation dock, and changing rooms for staff.

Mahama’s pledge to restart the project offers renewed hope to traders and residents eager to see the Takoradi Market Circle transformed into a thriving commercial hub.
