SMEs to receive GHS8.2bn support from government – Stephen Amoah discloses

The government has allocated GH¢8.2 billion to bolster Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) through the Growth and Opportunity Initiative for Small and Medium Enterprises project.

Dr. Stephen Amoah, Deputy Minister for Finance, announced that the initiative will be spearheaded by key agencies, including the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), Ghana EXIM Bank, Development Bank Ghana (DBG), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The GEA will be allocated GH¢200 million to assist high-growth SMEs with small-scale grants and loans at highly subsidized rates for up to two years.

Ghana EXIM Bank will receive GH¢500 million to provide SMEs with subsidized financial support for capital and operational costs, as well as capacity-building services.

Development Bank Ghana will contribute approximately GH¢1.2 billion to support SMEs via participating financial institutions.

At a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Kumasi, Dr. Amoah highlighted that the initiative, led by the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industry, aims to alleviate financial barriers for small-scale businesses and enhance their access to necessary funding.

He emphasized the importance of overcoming obstacles to SME growth and creating a supportive environment through partnerships and diverse financial resources.

Given that SMEs represent about 90 percent of businesses and contribute roughly 70 percent to the national GDP, Dr. Amoah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating SME expansion.

He encouraged journalists to help publicize the SMEs Growth and Opportunity programme, urging eligible businesses to apply for the non-partisan initiative.

Attendees at the meeting, who received guidance on the application process and eligibility criteria, expressed their gratitude for the initiative and its potential to empower their enterprises.

Rapid exchange rate dips business confidence -BoG report

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has disclosed in its latest Monetary Policy Report that confidence surveys conducted in June 2024 showed a slight weakening in consumer and business sentiments.

The central bank noted that exchange rate fluctuations in May 2024 were a significant challenge for businesses, impacting their operations.

“The Business Confidence Index dipped to 88.8 from 92.6 in the same comparative period as businesses expressed concern about the cost implications of the rapid exchange rate depreciation observed in May 2024”, it said.

Similarly, the report showed that Consumer Confidence Index declined to 81.2 in June 2024, from 87.7 in April 2024, on account of high food prices and some uncertainties about future economic conditions.

“These findings were broadly in line with observed trends in Ghana’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which fell below the 50.0 benchmark to 49.7 in June 2024, from 51.6 in the previous month”, the BoG explained in the report.

    Industrial Consumption of Electricity

The report also indicated a slight decrease in industrial electricity consumption, falling by 1.2 percent to 295.71 gigawatts in May 2024, compared to 299.23 gigawatts in the same month of 2023.

Overall, industrial electricity usage for the first five months of 2024 dropped by 7.0 percent to 1,399.80 gigawatts, down from 1,505.47 gigawatts in the equivalent period last year.

    Manufacturing Activities

The report states that manufacturing sector activities, as measured by trends in direct tax collections and private sector contributions to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Pension Scheme (Tier-1), showed improvement in May 2024.

Additionally, total direct taxes rose by 43.7 percent year-on-year to GH¢4.11 billion in May 2024, up from GH¢2.86 billion in May 2023.

“Cumulatively, total direct taxes collected for the first five months of 2024 went up by 31.6 percent to GH¢22.19 billion, compared to ¢16.86 billion recorded in the first five months of 2023”.

Regarding the contributions from different sub-tax categories, income tax (both PAYE and self-employed) represented 48.8 percent, corporate tax made up 38.4 percent, and “other tax sources” contributed 12.8 percent.

Additionally, private sector workers’ contributions to the SSNIT Pension Scheme (Tier-1) rose by 39.6 percent year-on-year, reaching GH¢470.92 million in May 2024, compared to GH¢337.23 million in May 2023.

For the first five months of 2024, the cumulative contributions increased by 28.8 percent to GH¢1.97 billion, up from GH¢1.53 billion in the same period of 2023.

    Construction Sector

The report showed that activities in the construction sub-sector, proxied by the volume of cement sales, increased by 10.6 percent (year-on-year) to 235,050.55 tonnes in May 2024, up from 212,584.38 tonnes recorded a year ago.

On a month-on-month basis, total cement sales increased by 13.2 percent in May 2024 compared with the 207,691.74 tonnes recorded in April 2024.

“However, for the first five months of 2024, sales declined marginally by 2.3 percent to 1,132,654.32 tonnes, from 1,158,854.69 tonnes for the same period of 2023. The relative improvement in total cement sales, year-on-year, was due to an uptick in construction activities during the review period”.

BoG report shows slight dip in advertised jobs

The latest Monetary Policy Report from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) reveals a slight decline in the number of advertised jobs for June 2024. A total of 2,968 job advertisements were recorded, compared to 2,993 in the same period in 2023.

The report indicates that the volume of job adverts in selected print and online media, which partially reflects labor demand in the economy, remained largely consistent with the previous year’s figures for June 2024.

However, the report also noted that for the first half of 2024, the total number of advertised jobs increased by 2.4% to 17,278, up from 16,866 in the corresponding period of 2023.

The Monetary Policy Report provides an overview of the economic and financial assessments considered by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) during its 119th meeting in July 2024, prior to making policy decisions.

  • Lame-duck Akufo-Addo must address nation on imminent crises due to galamsey – Minority

Lame-duck Akufo-Addo must address nation on imminent crises due to galamsey – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to promptly address the nation regarding the current condition of Ghana’s environment.

This call for action arises from increasing concerns over the swift deterioration of the country’s natural resources, such as forests, water bodies, and land, which the Minority feels demands immediate attention and intervention from the highest level of government.

Addressing the media, on Tuesday, September 3, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee, Alhassan Suhuyini, expressed alarm over the government’s perceived inaction in tackling environmental challenges such as illegal mining, deforestation, and pollution.

“We wish to therefore to call on our lame duck president who checked out long ago and the clueless vice president, who is only focused on merely winning an election to show its possible without a clue as to what to with it, to at least dismiss the ministers responsible for Science and Environment and MLNR to signal their disappointment and the indignation of the people.”

“Anything short of that will mean our suspicions that galamsay is a regime sponsored and supported rape of the state is true. We also demand a statement from the president on the state of our environment immediately. It’s critical to our survival as a nation,” he stated.

He reprimanded the administration for its ineffective enforcement of environmental regulations, which has resulted in the ongoing destruction of essential ecosystems vital for the country’s sustainable development.

The Tamale North MP stressed that the persistent environmental damage poses a serious risk to the health and well-being of Ghanaians.

He called on the President to present specific plans to tackle these problems, including strategies for ecosystem restoration and stricter implementation of environmental laws.

  • Report on unapproved leased lands in Northern Region – Minority to Lands Minister

Report on unapproved leased lands in Northern Region – Minority to Lands Minister

Minority in Parliament has urged the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to promptly release the list of lands in the Northern Region that have been leased without proper authorization.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs argue that disclosing this information is essential for reclaiming the lands and identifying those behind the unauthorized leases.

At a press conference on Tuesday, September 3, Alhassan Suhuyini, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Lands and Natural Resources Committee, criticized the government for its tendency to withhold information from the public.

He stressed the need for transparency in handling such issues, especially when it concerns public lands.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the press, thanks to our collective activism against dubious allocations of state lands to private individuals, the government has since forced a retreat and announced that the Northern Regional Lands Commission has been directed to reverse a number of leases over public lands granted to private developers without the prior approval of the President of the Republic.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, it will be most irresponsible on the part of the Minister and President if the officials involved in the criminal allocation of the said leases of government land, without the prior approval of neither the president nor minister, are not sanctioned.”

Mr. Suhuyini urged the government to publicly disclose the list of government lands that have been leased without proper authorization, so that Ghanaians can evaluate the situation independently.

He contended that public oversight is crucial for ensuring accountability and curbing further unauthorized land transactions.

Alongside the release of the list, the NDC MPs have demanded that any staff members of the Lands Commission implicated in these illegal activities face penalties.

Mr. Suhuyini emphasized the need for stringent disciplinary measures to discourage others from participating in similar misconduct.

“We therefore demand the swift dismissal and criminal investigation of the officials involved in allocating the said leases without the approval of the President. We also request the Minister in the interest of transparency and good governance to publish the full report of the three-member committee the ministry set up to investigate the transfer of the public lands in the Northern Region,” he stated.

  • Girls fell in love with me because I used to sing RnB songs – Akesse Brempong

Girls fell in love with me because I used to sing RnB songs – Akesse Brempong

Ghanaian gospel musician Phil Evans Akesse Brempong recently shared insights into his life before embarking on his journey as a gospel artist.

During an engagement with Irene Adubea Aning on the Career Trail TV program, Akesse Brempong revealed that during his senior high school years, he used to charm girls by singing RnB songs.

He reminisced about owning a book filled with lyrics from Westlife and other popular RnB tracks, which he would learn and sing to impress the girls.

“I started singing for the girls in SHS and they fell for it. To get to be friends with the girls, I will use the music, singing a lot of RnB songs. There used to be a small book which contained all the Westlife songs including RnB songs. So you buy the cassette, you buy the book and you go and sing for the girls. It was a thing,’ he narrated.

He highlighted that this was his way of life until he entered university, where he realized that becoming a gospel musician was his true calling.

    A young Akesse Brempong

He noted that his transformation began when he was asked to lead the choir after attending a church meeting with a friend.

“Gideon dragged me to one of their meetings one day. The music director was teaching a song and he was fumbling with it. So he went to tell the music director that, the guy sitting there, the first-year guy is really good. He can teach this song. The guy called me up to help him teach it. I taught the song in 15 minutes. He was like, wow, this guy is good,” he recalled.

In the aftermath of this incident, he stated that he had the opportunity to direct the PENSA choir and other gospel programs at the university.

“I started directing the PENSA choir, right from the first day I went to rehearsal until I left KNUST. I was also part of the recording team for the gospel explosion and the lead vocal for the gospel explosion. I was involved in the mass choir as well,” he further submitted.

After graduating from university, he felt that gospel music was a divine calling from God and fully embraced it.

  • Are galamseyers more powerful than us? – Opanyin Agyekum quizzes govt

Are galamseyers more powerful than us? – Opanyin Agyekum quizzes govt

Professor Kofi Agyekum, widely known as “Opanyin Agyekum,” is baffled by the government’s inability to eradicate illegal mining (galamsey) once and for all.

Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Opanyin Agyekum, voiced his frustration with the authorities for their inability to put a stop to illegal mining.

He questioned why the country is not entrusting the fight against galamsey to the Security Services, specifically mentioning the Military.

“Do the galamseyers outnumber us or are they stronger than us? Do they have more weapons that when you go to cease them from operating, they can overcome us?”, the Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana questioned.

To him, “the government has relaxed her efforts”, however he calls on the authorities to do the needful to discourage the illegality.

Galamsey has been wreaking havoc on the country’s water bodies and environment for years, with minimal action taken to address this scourge.

This illegal activity remains one of the nation’s most difficult challenges, as reports suggest that traditional leaders, government officials, and locals in various galamsey communities, along with other influential figures, are directly involved.

The Ghana Water Company Ltd. has been significantly impacted, warning that “about Sixty percent (60%) of the catchment capacity is silted as a result of illegal mining (galamsey) compromising the quality of raw water. We are currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU instead of 2000 NTU designed for adequate treatment.”

  • 10 NPP scandals that will be probed when NDC comes to power

10 NPP scandals that will be probed when NDC comes to power

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that if they secure victory in the December 7, 2024 elections, they will launch investigations into numerous scandals that have occurred during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration over the past seven years.

These scandals include incidents of election violence and the mismanagement of public funds.

Here are ten scandals the NDC promises to investigate should they win power in 2024:

    1. The killing of eight persons during the 2020 elections

Former President John Dramani Mahama has promised to institute investigations into the killing of eight persons during the 2020 elections.

Mahama has assured the families of all who lost their lives during the tragic incident not to despair. Eight people lost their lives from gunshots allegedly fired by military personnel during the elections.

“Insha Allah, when we come into office, we will investigate the killings, bring the perpetrators to face the law, and pay the appropriate compensations,” Mahama was quoted as saying during his campaign at Techiman North.

    2. Commission of inquiry on state lands

Mahama has committed to establishing a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the alleged misappropriation of state lands, particularly focusing on expropriated Ga-Dangbe lands.

This commission aims to uncover the truth and resolve public land management issues.

    3. Ambulance spare parts

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that the NDC will investigate a scandal involving over $34.9 million authorized by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for purchasing spare parts for ambulances when the party wins power in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

The cost per ambulance exceeded the value of new ambulances, raising questions about financial mismanagement.

    4. Appearance fee

Ablakwa has also assured that the next NDC administration will conduct a full-scale corruption probe following revelations in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ documentary, “Galamsey Economy,” in which Minister of State Charles Adu Boahen allegedly solicited a $200,000 token for Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s support as appearance fee.

    5. Sky train

The Minority in Parliament is also targeting a victory in the 2024 elections to demand answers regarding a $2 million investment for a Sky Train project in Accra.

The Auditor-General’s report indicated that feasibility studies had not been undertaken, yet the payment was made.

    6. COVID-19 management and expenditures

The NDC plans to investigate Ghana’s management and expenditures related to COVID-19, including the procurement processes and allocation of funds.

    7. Agyapa Royalties deal

The controversial Agyapa Royalties deal, which involved monetizing Ghana’s gold royalties, will be scrutinized for potential conflicts of interest and lack of transparency.

    8. PDS scandal

John Mahama intends to fully investigate the PDS scandal, which resulted in a $190 million loss due to alleged fraudulent activities in the power distribution agreement.

    9. African games expenditure

Chairman of the Sports Committee of Parliament, Kobena Mensah Wisdom Woyome, has vowed to ensure accountability regarding the government’s expenditure on the 13th Africa Games, including a $3 million payment to GBC and $15 million spent on feeding athletes.

    10. Illegal sole-sourced contracts

The NDC will investigate illegal sole-sourced contracts awarded under the Akufo-Addo administration, aiming to uncover any instances of corruption and favouritism.

  • Africa’s largest oil refinery poised to begin petrol production

Africa’s largest oil refinery poised to begin petrol production

Africa’s largest oil refinery is nearing a major milestone with its imminent production of substantial volumes of gasoline, a development that could reshape the global fuel market.

The new Dangote refinery, located near Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial center, is on the verge of producing significant quantities of gasoline. According to sources familiar with the situation, the facility will have the capacity to process 650,000 barrels of oil per day at full operation, with over half of this amount converted into gasoline.

This advancement is expected to be a significant boost for Nigeria, where the state oil company—Nigeria’s primary fuel importer—has been struggling with disruptions in gasoline supply due to debt and rising costs.

Dangote’s gasoline production will influence billions of dollars in fuel trade both regionally and internationally. Last year, Nigeria imported nearly 250,000 barrels of gasoline daily, primarily from Europe, according to data from analytics firm Vortexa Ltd.

A crucial component in the refinery’s gasoline output is a unit known as a reformer, which produces blendstock for the fuel. This unit has started operating, and gasoline production is anticipated to commence by the end of the week, according to one source. Another source confirmed that gasoline would be available this week.

At peak capacity, the refinery is expected to produce around 330,000 barrels of gasoline per day, as noted by Randy Hurburun, a senior refinery analyst at Energy Aspects Ltd. This would account for over 1% of global gasoline demand, which stands at approximately 27 million barrels daily.

However, achieving these production levels will take time. Energy Aspects forecasts the refinery will produce about 90,000 barrels per day in the fourth quarter, with output increasing to nearly 250,000 barrels daily in the latter half of next year. A critical factor in expanding production further is the installation of a residue fluid catalytic cracker.

The refinery has been gradually increasing its output after years of delays. Aliko Dangote, the plant’s owner, indicated in July that the facility was targeting a start date for gasoline production in August.

Armed criminals injure 2, steal gold after raiding Northern Ashanti mines

The Konongo Odumase Concession of Northern Ashanti Mines Co. Ltd. has been violently raided by heavily armed criminals, resulting in two individuals suffering serious injuries and gold ore valued at millions of dollars being stolen.

The attack took place on Monday, September 2, 2024, at the company’s mining site in Konongo Odumase, located in the Asante Akim Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The assailants, armed with firearms, machetes, clubs, bows, and arrows, inflicted severe damage on the company’s assets, including three vehicles and various mining equipment.

In a press statement, the company expressed profound concern over the ongoing violence by armed illegal miners, noting that this incident is part of a disturbing pattern of repeated assaults.

The statement also revealed that Northern Ashanti Mines has been working with local security agencies, including the Municipal Security Council, to tackle these persistent threats, but with little success.

“Management of the mine has held several meetings with the Municipal Security Council headed by the MCE for Asante Akyim Central; the latest of which concerned another attack that the mine suffered less than three months ago,” the statement read.

“Northern Ashanti Mines finds these recurrent attacks inimical to the quest of government to promote a sustainable legal and properly regulated mining industry where investors are offered a favorable environment to contribute to the growth of the nation,” it emphasized.

The management has pinpointed two major figures in illegal mining who are suspected of orchestrating these attacks and has urgently appealed to government ministries and traditional authorities for immediate action to restore security and safeguard their operations.

The mine’s management has reiterated its dedication to upholding corporate responsibility and working closely with state agencies to ensure the safety of their employees and the integrity of their mining activities.

    Find full Statement Below:

Armed Attack on Northern Ashanti Mines Concession leaves two badly injured, with gold-ore worth millions looted.

Management of Northern Ashanti Mines Co. Ltd. a duly registered and licensed mining company at Konongo Odumase, in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region has noted with deep concern the incessant attacks of armed illegal miners; on its concession.

On Monday 2nd September, 2024; these bracing bandits invaded our concession for the umpteenth time wielding stones, machetes, clubs, cajoles, fire arms, bows and arrows and other offensive objects.

This horrific raid which occurred amidst the firing of live ammunition resulted in two of our staff sustaining life threatening gunshot wounds; destruction of three vehicles; damage to our buildings and key installations and the looting of ore amounting to several millions of dollars.

Management of the mine has held several meetings with the Municipal Security Council headed by the MCE for Asante Akyim Central; the latest of which concerned another attack that the mine suffered less than three months ago.

Northern Ashanti Mines finds these recurrent attacks inimical to the quest of government to promote a sustainable legal and properly regulated mining industry where investors are offered a favorable environment to contribute to the growth of the nation.

We are fully aware of the threats of terrorism in the sub region and the tendency of such radical elements to hide behind community thugs to raid mines to finance their onslaught and cause further instability in an already volatile region where Ghana faces significant threat.

It is also crucial to note that allowing such disturbing clashes to happen within an electioneering year where the peace, security and stability of the nation is a prime concern; can have dire consequences especially for miscreants looking for the slight flickers of tension to exploit.

Intelligence picked up by management suggests that two notorious illegal mining kingpins in the community are behind the provision of arms and the mobilization of these thugs to continue reigning terror on the concessions of Northern Ashanti Mines.

The mine has demonstrated utmost corporate responsiveness to all our stakeholders and finds it unfortunate that such impunity festers without comprehensive responses from the state to protect the mutual interests of our mines.

A cursory trend analysis shows an increasing risk of armed confrontations which we fear could overwhelm security services and pose further threats to the precious lives of our staff and the continuous operations of the mine.

We are calling on our respected Traditional Authority, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources; the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Defense; the Ashanti Regional Minister, and all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies clothed with the mandate to offer us adequate guarantees and security; to promptly come to the aid of Northern Ashanti Mines.

As a company that has not reneged on our taxes, royalties, and other obligations to the community and the state, Management is willing and ready to cooperate with all agencies and stakeholders to restore lasting peace and order in Konongo Odumase as we guard jealously our obligations to Ghana, the lives of our staff and the property of the mines.

  • Declare a state of emergency over polluted water bodies – Eco-Conscious Citizens

Declare a state of emergency over polluted water bodies – Eco-Conscious Citizens

The Coordinator for Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwah, has urged Ghana to declare a state of emergency in response to height of pollution of water resources.

She highlighted that Ghanaians are not doing enough to address the widespread contamination of water bodies caused by illegal mining activities.

Mrs. Serwah also emphasized that even clear-looking water might contain toxic chemicals. Concurrently, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) in the Central Region has reported significant water supply issues in Cape Coast, Elmina, and nearby areas.

These problems are mainly due to a lack of raw water at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, exacerbated by pollution from illegal mining, which has drastically reduced the amount of water available from the Pra River for treatment.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM show, Mrs. Serwah stated, “You still have the mercury and cyanide. They are colourless, so you are sort of deceived when you see clear water. At least when it’s brown, you can notice, but when it is clear, you are deceived into thinking that it is safe, when it might not be; it might be quite dangerous.

“So, I think the time has come for Ghanaians to march to the Flagstaff House and say we need to declare a state of emergency or call a general strike. Until a state of emergency is declared, the army should go and police these areas, make arrests, and prosecute offenders. Until we begin to take the matter seriously, nothing should proceed.”

Mrs. Serwah emphasized that citizens are being lethally affected by pollution, while those in positions of authority are not taking sufficient measures.

She also highlighted the bravery of journalists who have risked their lives to report on these problems and underscored the urgent need for immediate intervention.

“We need to all march to Flagstaff House and say we are not going to sit or stand idle while we are being poisoned.”

They are likely to lead Ghana into destruction due to democracy – Nyaho-Tamakloe to EC

A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed deep concern over the conduct of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking at an anti-corruption event at the GNAT Hall in Accra on Monday, September 2, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe warned that the EC’s actions could undermine Ghana’s democratic integrity and potentially lead the country into destruction.

“I am saying at the moment, the greatest threat to our democracy is the Electoral Commission,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe declared. “If we are not careful, they will lead this country into ruin, mark my words.”

Addressing the audience, he cautioned that the EC’s conduct poses a severe risk to national stability. Drawing on his personal experiences, he added, “I’ve witnessed coup d’etats in this country, and I have been part of them. I spent almost five years in prison, and I know the gravity of what I’m talking about.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s concerns are fueled by recent developments he views as mismanaged by the EC. He highlighted issues such as alleged unauthorized transfers of voters between constituencies, which he believes were conducted without proper consent and could disrupt the electoral process.

“How can transfers be made from one constituency to another without the necessary approvals? These are facts,” he questioned.

This criticism comes at a time when the EC is facing increased scrutiny from various stakeholders, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the country gears up for the 2024 general elections.

  • Defence Minister has no authority to deploy military along Ghana’s borders – Col Aboagye

Defence Minister has no authority to deploy military along Ghana’s borders – Col Aboagye

A security expert and former officer of the Ghana Armed Forces, Retired Colonel Festus Aboagye, has expressed strong objections to the recent deployment of military personnel to combat smuggling along Ghana’s border areas.

He argued that the Minister of Defence lacks the authority to order such a deployment without following the proper constitutional procedures.

Speaking during an interview on the “505” news analysis program on Accra-based Class 91.3 FM, hosted by Valentina Affriyie on Friday, August 30, 2024, Col. Aboagye raised concerns over the government’s decision to involve the military in border security.

He pointed out that internal security matters, such as combating smuggling, are the constitutional responsibility of the police, not the military.

“It is not within the authority of the Minister of Defence to deploy the armed forces arbitrarily. We must follow due process in line with democratic governance,” he added.

He further argued that the Minister does not have the authority to announce the deployment of the army over the radio.

He went on to explain that, over the years, the military’s involvement in combating cocoa smuggling and illegal mining (galamsey) has been problematic. More often than not, he claimed, the military ended up assisting the smugglers rather than stopping them.

We will not move until you give us a place to relocate – Roadside traders at circle to govt

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) launched an operation to clear traders and individuals who have occupied bus stops and pavements around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, popularly known as Circle.

This effort, which began on Monday, June 3, 2024, mirrors a similar exercise conducted in 2017, prior to the construction of the €74 million interchange. At that time, traders were also removed by the AMA to ensure the area remained accessible for pedestrians.

However, keeping the roads clear continues to be a challenge, as the evicted traders have returned to the streets.

To understand the traders’ concerns and explore possible solutions to the congestion, The Independent Ghana engaged those affected by the AMA’s directive.

These roadside traders emphasized that relocating from their current locations would significantly hinder their ability to earn a living, as their goods and services are in high demand within the area.

They also pointed out that the government has not provided an alternative space where they can continue their trading and service activities.

“If you are sacking us, you should give us an alternative. You cannot send us away like animals. If you want us to leave the streets because you care for us, you should direct us to a place you have available. Until then, efforts to sack us will not work,” Mr. Alhassan, who sells phone accessories by the roadside, passionately expressed.

A phone vendor, Madam Janet, explained, “The taskforce agents were sacking us, but it will not work. Not all of us can do government work, so what we do by the roadside helps us. As it stands now, if your phone gets missing and you need a new one, you will come to me. So even if they sack us, when they go, we will return.”

“I have five children, and this is the only place I have settled to take care of them. Some are in the university. Some of them have graduated, while others are in secondary school writing their exams. So, if the government can do something about it, they should work on it.”

Despite the government’s efforts to alleviate street congestion, the issue persists. Finding a compromise, ensuring strict enforcement by security agencies, or providing a designated market space for these traders may be the most effective solutions moving forward.

Plea bargaining not shield from accountability- Dame tells Cambridge Economic Crime Summit

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has asserted that plea bargaining should not be used as a tool to shield individuals from accountability.

He made this statement during his keynote address at the 41st Cambridge Economic Crime Conference, held at Jesus College, Cambridge University, from September 1st to 8th, 2024.

“Prosecutors are “motivated by the sole objective of recovering supposed proceeds of crime in a situation where the accused persons plainly refuse to admit responsibility for the commission of those crimes, is an unwanted paradox inimical to the rationale for the existence of criminal laws,” he told a distinguished audience that included Attorneys-General, senior judicial officers, heads of police and criminal investigative bodies, and other key figures in the fight against economic crime.

Mr. Dame called for enhanced global cooperation to combat the growing threat of cross-border financial crimes.

He emphasized that the ultimate goal of prosecuting such crimes is to trace and recover the assets obtained through illicit activities.

The A-G further highlighted the need for international collaboration, particularly in tracing assets that often cross multiple jurisdictions.

He pointed out the complexities unique to different regions, such as Africa, where initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) present both opportunities and challenges in the fight against financial crime.

Pragya” drivers, who operate motorized tricycles, are a common sight on roads in Ghana. These vehicles, also known as “Yellow Yellow” or “Mahama Camboo,” are popular for their affordability and convenience, especially in areas where larger vehicles can’t easily

However, their presence on the roads has sparked significant debate. On one hand, they provide essential transportation and job opportunities for many young people.

On the other hand, they are often criticized for contributing to road accidents due to reckless driving and non-compliance with traffic regulations.

Many of these tricycles are unregistered, and some drivers are underage or unlicensed, which exacerbates the problem.

The situation is complex, as these vehicles are both a blessing and a curse.

Numerous shops destroyed as fire gut Zongo lane near Rawlings Park

Fire has erupted at Zongo Lane near Rawlings Park in Makola, Accra, causing damage to several shops and likely leaving traders devastated.

According to the Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service, Alex Nartey, the fire began as a small blaze but quickly intensified due to the inaccessibility of the area and the presence of highly flammable materials stored in many shops.

“The fire that started little has quickly spread as a result of inaccessibility and highly flammable materials found in the affected shops,” Nartey explained.

Firefighters arrived on the scene promptly and undertook a rigorous effort to control the flames. Despite their intense work, the fire caused considerable destruction before it was brought under control.

As the smoke began to dissipate, it became clear that the fire had caused severe damage. Numerous shops were left in ruins, with valuable items such as clothing, electronics, and other goods completely destroyed.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service. Authorities are currently working to determine how the blaze started and to assess the full impact on the affected businesses.

In October 2022, 200 makeshift structures at the Makola Shopping Mall in Accra were destroyed by fire on Friday night.

It took personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) close to four hours to extinguish the inferno with the assistance of reinforcements.

Nana Kwame Bediako promises to create 8m jobs in 10-years

Leader of the political movement The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has announced a bold strategy to harness the economic potential across all regions in Ghana, with a goal of creating 8 million jobs over the next decade.

Mr. Bediako also known as cheddar underscored his dedication to revitalizing the industrial capabilities of regions that have long been overlooked.

He made this declaration during the launch of his campaign for the 2024 elections on Sunday, September 1.

Mr. Bediako detailed that his plan aims to leverage the unique industrial strengths of each of Ghana’s 16 regions, paying special attention to those that have been inactive.

“It’s supposed to bring back the 15 dormant regions that we have left for so long, and we haven’t done anything,” he stated.

He disclosed findings from thorough research conducted by his team, which uncovered significant mineral and agricultural resources in these regions..

“Tonight, I would like to unveil all the potential minerals, arable lands, and all that we have discovered through the research within the 15 regions to Ghanaians. We start by making sure we invest in all these 16 regions, that is industrial plants to be able to refine all our minerals, and then the processing plants, to be able to process all our agro plants,” Cheddar explained.

According to his research, Ghana’s potential mineral resources—including gold, iron ore, gas, bauxite, lithium, and diamonds—along with its agricultural lands, amount to an estimated $2.5 trillion. Cheddar projects that by fully harnessing these resources, Ghana could achieve an economic output of $4.7 trillion within the next decade.

In addition to boosting the economy, Cheddar’s plan aims to create significant employment opportunities. “We will also create 8 million jobs in a decade,” he promised, outlining a vision of widespread economic development and job creation across the country.

“Our research on attribution reserve shows that gold, iron ore, gas bauxite and lithium and diamond and the potential of agro-processing and all the arable lands on the country amounts to $2.5 trillion…We are determined to bring out every region’s wealth…Ghana will have an economic output of 4.7trillion…We will also create 8 million jobs in a decade.”

Mr. Bediako’s campaign is focused on the idea that every region in Ghana holds untapped resources that could significantly boost national prosperity.

Don’t temper with evidence on sexual violence, report immediately – Gender officer

The Gender Department of the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has advised that the public not to interfere with evidence on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases.

The Volta Regional Gender Officer, Thywill Kpe emphasized that these cases are criminal offenses and should be promptly reported to the police for the prosecution of those responsible with realistic evidence.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Cape Coast, she emphasized the need to promptly report such crimes to protect victims and maintain crucial evidence.

“Violence maims, destroys, and kills, so if something like that happens, report immediately to the police and don’t tamper with the evidence,” she emphasized.

“We all have a stake in preventing SGBV and ensuring that offenders are prosecuted. Let’s all do our part for the good of Ghana,” she added.

Mr Kpe recommended that individuals who experience sexual or physical abuse should, with the assistance of family or friends, seek medical attention immediately to prevent potential consequences such as sexually transmitted infections or unintended pregnancy.

“Usually, we tend to blame and isolate victims of rape and defilement and call them bad children; it is very wrong to do that. Nobody has the right to abuse anyone under any circumstance.

“In such harrowing moments, seek psychological help for them; they need counseling and not blame and insult,” she added.

To reduce the prevalence of SGBV, the gender officer called for the elimination or reform of harmful religious and cultural practices that negatively impact women and girls.

“We need to enact by-laws in our communities to address such cases and increase advocacy to end it. And while at that, we have to empower our women and girls to be more assertive,” she said.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians acquiring offshore education to share their knowledge and acquired expertise to impact Ghana country’s growth.

The president has noticed that several Ghanaians who travel to study abroad are reluctant about returning home to contribute to the nation’s progress

However those who did, chose to be held up in their zone.

President Akufo-Addo issued the call during the 10th-anniversary networking and fundraising dinner of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Society of Ghana (OXCAM), held at the Africa Regent Hotel in Accra.

He highlighted that nation-building is a collective responsibility that requires the efforts of both the government and its citizens.

The President encouraged corporate organizations, individuals, and alumni associations like the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Ghana to work together in advancing national development.

He urged Ghanaians who had studied at Oxford, Cambridge, and other UK institutions and returned home to use their knowledge and skills to address the nation’s challenges.

“Many times when people school abroad, they are reluctant to return to Ghana to help in nation building but these citizens saw the need to return home and also network to contribute to national development,” he said about the OXCAM.

President Akufo-Addo, as an alumnus of Oxford University, highlighted that his administration has prioritized education as a key driver of Ghana’s development.

He underscored the important contributions alumni networks, like the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Ghana, can make to the nation.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who serves as the patron of OXCAM, encouraged members to leverage their expertise to bring about positive change in Ghana and Africa.

He stressed the importance of applying the knowledge gained from these prestigious institutions for the betterment of humanity, asserting that a focus on human welfare would lead to a more peaceful world.

  • Akufo-Addo gives green light for negotiations on Saglemi Housing Project

Akufo-Addo gives green light for negotiations on Saglemi Housing Project

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given the green light for a framework to negotiate with the successful bidder(s) involved in resolving the Saglemi Housing Project.

This approval came following a request from the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

According to the new framework, the value of the work already completed at Saglemi will be recognized as the government’s equity in the project. The cost required to finish the remaining construction will represent the equity of the chosen partner in a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that will be set up to complete the project.

Profits from the sale of the houses will be divided between the government and the private partner based on their respective shares in the SPV.

The Saglemi Housing Project, which was initially planned to deliver 5,000 affordable housing units, received around $200 million in government funding. However, only 1,506 units were partially finished, and the project was put on hold due to the absence of crucial infrastructure like water, electricity, and sanitation facilities.

Anestimation done by the Ghana Institute of Surveyors indicates that an additional $100 million would be required to complete the unfinished units—funds that the government could not allocate.

Due to this, the Cabinet authorized the pursuit of private-sector funding and expertise, leading to the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) in April 2024.

Government appointed Deloitte Ghana as the Transaction Advisor to assess bids submitted by Afro-Arab Properties Ltd, Quarm-LMI Consortium, Dredge Masters-Titanium, Broll Ghana Ltd, and Masiltin Group on July 8, 2024 to ensure a transparent process,

Deloitte Ghana is expected to present the selected bidder(s) to the Ministry of Works and Housing by mid-September. Following this, negotiations will commence to finalize the terms for creating a Joint Venture.

The Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established through this partnership will be tasked with completing and managing the 1,506 housing units.

With the President’s approval of the negotiation framework, discussions will move forward once the evaluation process is finalized and the preferred bidder(s) are announced.

Several men are dying because they’re married to just one woman – Nana Poku Ashis claims

Renowned artiste manager Nana Poku Ashis has remarked that many men are struggling significantly because they are confined to monogamous marriages.

He explained that these men find themselves in challenging situations where remarrying could offer them some peace of mind. However, they have restricted themselves to just one partner, which is affecting their well-being and peace.

Mr Ashis recounted during a conversation on United Showbiz, a story about a friend contemplating marrying a younger woman to invigorate his unhappy marriage.

Ashis elaborated that although his friend believes this younger woman could bring more excitement to his life, he is hesitant due to concerns about societal judgment and potential backlash from his current wife, including fears of severe consequences such as losing his property or even facing violence.

“A lot of men are unhappy in their single marriages, but due to cultural norms and societal expectations, they remain in these unsatisfactory relationships. They are lying to themselves and killing themselves, knowing very well that the single marriage is not working for them. Even their wives are aware of this,” Ashis said.

“I have a friend who wants to marry a younger woman to improve his marital life. He is concerned about being judged and fears that his wife might even kill him or take his property if he pursues this,” he added.

He referred to biblical advice that suggests if someone can handle multiple marriages, they should consider doing so.

“Even the Bible says that if you can afford more than one marriage, opt for it,” he stated.

Ashis thus urged men to seek their own happiness and fulfill their desires, provided they are able to handle the responsibilities that come with a polygamous relationship.

“If you can handle it, don’t let anyone deter you from marrying more than one wife,” he advised.

Buy flowers for Lydia Alhassan and shake hands with her – Blakk Rasta advises Dumelo

Blakk Rasta, a Ghanaian journalist, has asserted that John Dumelo’s recent apology to Lydia Alhassan on social media for his offensive comments inadequate.

He emphasized that to genuinely make amends and improve his chances of winning the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in the upcoming elections, Dumelo should meet with Alhassan in person to apologize.

Blakk Rasta also pointed out the importance of a face-to-face meeting, suggesting that it would be beneficial for Dumelo to record the encounter and share it online.

“If you want to win this election, please go to Lydia Seyram Alhassan. Somebody tell John, to go to her and apologise one-on-one. Whether on tape or outside tape. If you’re able to get it on tape, it’s a bigger plus,” he stated on his show.

Blakk Rasta also suggested a few considerate actions for Dumelo to think about during his visit.

“Shake her hands, take a bouquet of flowers and some of the fruits from your farm to her. I said fruits from your farm! Whether she eats it or not, as long as it is accepted, it is done. Your apology is beautiful but it is just in the air. Meet her one-on-one and apologise,” he added.

    Background:

Tensions intensified when John Dumelo, during a TV3 program, made remarks connecting his political rival, Lydia Alhassan, to her late husband’s death.

Dumelo’s comments were a reaction to chants from local constituents and what he saw as personal attacks from Alhassan’s supporters related to the infamous V8 incident.

Amid the heated exchange, Dumelo implied that Alhassan should face questions about her husband’s death.

His remarks, meant as a rebuttal, have since ignited widespread criticism on social media.

    Apology

After a thorough reflection on the impact of his words, John Dumelo issued an unqualified apology on social media.

In a statement shared online, he retracted his comments and expressed regret for any offense caused to Madam Lydia Alhassan, his constituents, and others affected by his remarks.

He finds the situation particularly uncomfortable, as he was instrumental in advocating for the inclusion of the studio proposal in the NPP’s 2020 manifesto.

“So if you watch in 2017, 2016 it was not in the manifesto. It appeared in 2020. if you could go and pick some of my audios in my days at hitz FM, the industry fought against it. It is explicit, it is public knowledge, it was all over. I can quote some of them like Apietus, some were “for”, some were against. But the “against” were higher than the for. And so for those of us who have seen some of our bug men go to prison because of causing financial laws to the state, we decided to play it safe by not taking the risk.

During the launch of the NPP’s 2020 manifesto in the Central Region, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, announced that during its second term in office, it will build recording studios in Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Western Regions.

“We see the creative arts as a major growth pole, it has so much talent, the problem is access to studio. As a result, we will set up large recording studios in Accra, Tema, Takoradi and Kumasi, for recording artistes to rent,” he said.

Speaking to the media, the deputy minister cited Gospel musician Nacee, who has expressed in interviews that he no longer sees the need for additional recording studios, given the success of numerous private facilities already in operation.

“They rejected it. You can quote me anywhere anytime. They rejected and said we should share the money amongst them because they already have studios that were doing well. You can quote me again. Nacee, few weeks ago was on hit FM, he went to peace fm again and Nacee said that at the time he supported, but he feels that now, we don’t need it. Yes Nacee said it a few weeks ago”

However if the industry expresses renewed interest in having the studios built then we will proceed.

“The bottom line is that if the industry shows interest that they’ve change their minds that we should build, why not? We will go for it.”

In the 2020 manifesto of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), they promised to build three recording music studios when re-elected into power again.

The three recording music studios were planed to be situated at Kumasi, Accra, Tema and Takoradi.

However, this has remained an unfulfilled promise because creative players are no more in support of the idea.

Find a woman prettier than your ex-wife and flaunt her – Oboy Siki advises Kweku Manu

Actor Kwaku Manu has been advised to improve his public image and heal from his breakup by dating a woman who is more attractive than his ex-wife.

Following the widespread news of his ex-wife, Naa Okailey Nyarko, remarrying and showcasing her new husband online, reactions on social media have been mixed.

Some believe Mrs Nyarko is intentionally trying to provoke Kwaku Manu, while others empathize with him, recognizing that her online display of affection with her new partner adds to his distress.

In response, Kumawood actor Oboy Siki has suggested a strategy for Kwaku Manu to both move on and subtly address his ex-wife’s actions.

Oboy Siki has recommended that Kwaku Manu find a new, more beautiful partner and highlight their relationship on social media.

Oboy Siki stated, “Kwaku should find a woman who is prettier than his ex-wife and flaunt her on social media. Ghanaians love to talk, and since all eyes are on Kwaku, he should make a choice that will outshine his ex-wife’s public display of affection with her new white husband. This way, she will see that he has moved on to something better.”

He continued, “Kwaku should make sure to show off his new partner everywhere online. This will make his ex-wife aware of his new situation. If he doesn’t find someone prettier than Okailey, he will be embarrassed on social media.”

When asked about the possibility that Kwaku Manu has already found someone, Oboy Siki responded, “Kwaku isn’t known for being smooth with women. He is not a sweet talker and cannot woo a woman. It is challenging for him, so I don’t believe he currently has anyone.”

In the meantime, Kwaku Manu has refuted allegations of being heartbroken.

In a video posted on his YouTube channel, he stressed that he and his ex-wife continue to have a good relationship.

  • Brazil bans ‘X’ from operating due to the spread of misinformation

Brazil bans ‘X’ from operating due to the spread of misinformation

Brazil has prohibited the platform X, previously known as Twitter, from operating within its borders.

The ban was imposed because X failed to meet a deadline set by the Brazilian Supreme Court to appoint a new legal representative in the country.

Alexandre de Moraes directed the “immediate and total suspension” of the social media platform until it adheres to all court mandates and settles any outstanding fines.

The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation.

Reacting to the decision, X owner Elon Musk said: “Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and an unelected pseudo-judge in Brazil is destroying it for political purposes.”

The social media platform is reportedly used by about 10% of Brazil’s 200 million residents.

By Saturday morning, some users had reported that they were unable to access the platform.

Earlier this month, the company closed its office in Brazil, citing threats of arrest against its representative if she did not follow what it called “censorship” orders, which the company deemed unlawful under Brazilian law.

Justice Moraes had decreed that X accounts involved in spreading disinformation, including many supporters of former right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro, must be blocked while under investigation.

He also stated that the company’s legal representatives would be held responsible if any accounts were reactivated.

X has faced threats of fines for not complying with this directive, with both the company and Mr. Musk accusing the judge of having a left-wing bias.

This situation adds to a series of conflicts involving the tech billionaire, who has had disputes with the EU over X’s regulation and recently engaged in a public disagreement with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The head of Brazil’s telecommunications agency, responsible for suspending the platform, stated he is “proceeding with the compliance” to enforce the ban, according to Reuters.

Justice Moraes has set a five-day deadline for companies like Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores and block its use on iOS and Android devices.

He also warned that individuals or businesses using methods like VPNs to access the platform could face fines of R$50,000 (£6,700).

According to the judge’s ruling, the ban will remain in place until X appoints a new legal representative in Brazil and pays the fines for breaching Brazilian law.

In a previous update from one of its official accounts, X stated that it would not meet these demands.

“Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents,” the post said.

“The fundamental issue at stake here is that Judge de Moraes demands we break Brazil’s own laws. We simply won’t do that.”

Meanwhile, the bank accounts of Mr Musk’s satellite internet firm Starlink have been frozen in Brazil following an earlier order by the country’s Supreme Court.

Starlink responded with a post on X which said the “order is based on an unfounded determination that Starlink should be responsible for the fines levied – unconstitutionally – against X.”

Justice Moraes gained prominence after his decisions to restrict social media platforms in the country.

He is also investigating Mr Bolsonaro and his supporters for their roles in an alleged attempted coup on 8 January last year.

X is not the first social media company to come under pressure from authorities in Brazil.

Last year, Telegram was temporarily banned over its failure to cooperate with requests to block certain profiles.

Meta’s messaging service Whatsapp also faced temporary bans in 2015 and 2016 for refusing to comply with police requests for user data.

I did a butt lift surgery because my stomach was a little too big – BBNaija star

BBNaija star Mercy Eke has revealed that she did a butt lift surgery because her stomach was a little too big even though she had a beautiful slim body.

According to her, she endured significant physical and emotional distress during the process.

However, in a recent interview on the Love is a Game show, Eke shared that societal expectations also led her to choose the procedure, but she considers the outcome was ultimately worthwhile.

“To be very truthful, at first, it was because of the trend. I did my body in 2018. I think at the time it was just the trend, maybe peer pressure; everyone was doing it. I had a beautiful, slim body, but my stomach was a little too big. I was scared. I didn’t tell my mum because I didn’t want anybody to discourage me, so it was me and two of my other friends. We just planned it, we paid, we did it together at the same time.” Mercy disclosed.

She characterized the recovery period after the surgery as especially challenging, highlighting that the required post-operative massages were intensely painful.

“After the surgery, you get to have your body massaged, that’s the painful part. You can’t sleep on your butt for 14 days. You have to lay on your stomach. It was painful. You cry for three days, but it’s worth it” she said.

Responding to speculation about additional procedures, Eke clarified that, apart from the butt lift and a few minor nose fillers, she has not had any other body enhancements.

She also stressed the need for better education on cosmetic procedures, noting that many people have misconceptions about what liposuction actually involves.

“My butt is the softest thing you will ever touch because it’s just fat; it’s like water,” she added.

NDC to introduce weighing systems for farmers, traders to promote fair trade

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to introduce a weights and measurements system to promote fairness for both consumers and sellers in Ghana.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party’s Chairman, stated that this measure aims to ensure consumers get precise quantities of goods, while farmers and sellers receive equitable payment.

During a visit to Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, he noted that similar systems are successfully used in neighboring countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, where they help prevent fraud between farmers and traders.

If former President Mahama is elected in 2025, the plan includes providing weighing scales to markets nationwide to ensure accurate measurements and fair market prices.

Nketia clarified that this initiative is not about controlling prices but about ensuring fair trade practices.

Since Monday, Mr. Asiedu Nketia has been actively campaigning for the NDC in the Eastern region.

Two Police Constables held in custody for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court has placed two off-duty Police constables in custody after they allegedly assaulted an Okada rider and stole GH¢3,700.

General Lance Corporals Philmon Agbevem and Peter Kwame Badagbor, who are both assigned to the Accra Central District Police Command, face charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and robbery.

The accused allegedly compelled the victim to transfer funds from his mobile phone to another phone registered under the name Hope Alorvordzi.

The two officers, represented by their lawyer, Andy Vortia, have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

They are scheduled to appear before the court, presided over by Evelyn Asamoah, on September 10, 2024.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kofi Anane, under the guidance of ASP Emmanuel Haligah, informed the court that the complainant, Emmanuel Amertodor, is an Okada rider residing in Adenta.

On July 21, 2024, the two off-duty officers, riding a motorcycle with registration number GP 8145, intercepted the complainant based on a tip-off that he and his passenger had stolen a purse containing a mobile phone and other personal belongings from a woman near the National Theatre and were en route to the Thomas Sankara roundabout.

The prosecution stated that the accused, dressed in uniform and armed with a rifle, pursued the motorcyclists and intercepted them at the Christ the King traffic light, near the Jubilee House.

During the attempted arrest, the rider managed to escape, but the passenger, who is the complainant, was apprehended.

The prosecution further revealed that the two officers brutally beat the complainant, handcuffed him, and forcibly transferred GH¢3,700 from his mobile phone to a number registered under the name Hope Alovordzi, along with taking GH¢120 in cash from him.

The complainant reported the incident to the Police at Cantonments for initial investigations, which were later transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further probe.

The accused were arrested on August 8, 2024, and during questioning, they admitted to arresting the complainant on July 21, 2024, but denied stealing the amount mentioned in the charges.

Twins drown in abandoned galamsey pit near Twifo-Praso

A tragic incident claimed the lives of two-and-a-half-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, on Thursday when they fell into an abandoned galamsey pit filled with water.

The devastating event took place in Morkwaa, a farming community near Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region, marking the eighth death in the district this year due to uncovered galamsey pits, according to residents.

George Sam, the Assembly member for Morkwa Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He explained that the twins’ mother, who was unwell, had fallen asleep while her children played outside.

When she awoke and found them missing, she searched the house, only to discover their lifeless bodies in a neglected galamsey pit nearby.

Police have begun investigating the incident, and the twins’ bodies have been taken to the Twifo-Praso Government Hospital morgue for preservation.

Distressed residents voiced their concerns over the numerous exposed galamsey pits in the community and urged the Assembly to reclaim the land to prevent further tragedies.

L.I in the offing by Finance Ministry to enhance property rate collection

The Ministry of Finance has established a team tasked with drafting a Legislative Instrument (LI) to facilitate the enforcement of the Local Governance Act 936, aimed at enhancing property rate collection nationwide.

Once enacted, the LI will tackle current obstacles that impede the creation of an efficient property rate collection system.

“You would recall that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) was tasked to assist Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to implement a Unified Common Platform (UCP) for property rates administration, enhancement, and collection accountability.”

“Following the challenges encountered, the initiative had to be halted by the government to allow both the GRA and the MMDAs to streamline their processes for implementation,” said Mr George Winful, Director for the Revenue Policy Division, Ministry of Finance.

He was speaking at the maiden National Tax Conference held on the theme, “Improving progressive Property Taxation and Tax Compliance: The Key to Increased Domestic Revenue Mobilisation in Ghana.”

The event, funded by the Hewlett Foundation, was organized by Oxfam.

Mr. Mohammed Anwar Sadat Adam, Oxfam’s Programmes and Policy Influence Lead, highlighted that progressive taxation is a key approach to addressing inequality and injustice, which exacerbate poverty.

He mentioned that Oxfam, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has launched initiatives focused on capacity building, fostering stronger partnerships between citizens and local authorities, and creating social platforms to raise awareness of tax obligations and discuss strategies for revenue generation.

“We also worked with the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition at the national level together with other coalition members to generate evidence that contributes to the availability of data on tax administration efficiency, corporate tax behaviour towards fair taxation through the Fair Tax Monitor and the Ghana Responsible Tax Index,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner of the Policy and Programmes Department at the GRA, Mr. Dominic Naab, emphasized the organization’s dedication to improving the tax system’s efficiency and boosting compliance through strong enforcement, comprehensive education, and partnerships with key stakeholders.

He affirmed the GRA’s willingness to work closely with all parties to ensure that progressive taxation serves as a catalyst for growth, empowerment, and sustainable development.

“We owe it to our communities and future generations. It is through tax compliance that we can build schools, better education, and infrastructure needed to drive economic growth and social inclusion,” he said.

OXFAM also introduced the Fair Tax Monitor, a tool for comparing tax policies and practices across various countries, along with the Ghana Responsible Tax Index (GRTI) report, which evaluates and contrasts the responsible tax practices of multinational and large companies in Ghana.

  • Minority accuses govt of using military to scare voters amid grain export ban

Minority accuses govt of using military to scare voters amid grain export ban

The Minority in Parliament has criticized the government for allegedly using military forces to scare voters under the pretext of enforcing a newly imposed ban on grain exports, due to a severe drought affecting northern Ghana.

Government imposed an immediate ban on grain exports to safeguard domestic food supplies on August 26, 2024,

Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul confirmed that military forces have been stationed at the borders to implement this restriction.

However, the Minority has raised concerns, alleging that the military presence might be a covert attempt to suppress voter turnout.

At a press conference in Accra on August 30, 2024, James Agalga, Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee, criticized the absence of a clear timeline for the military’s deployment.

“If they have no ulterior motives, then they ought to have given us timelines,” Mr. Agalga argued.

He continued that: “The fact that there are no timelines gives us reason to suspect that they only used the crisis, related to the drought up north and the potential for us to have some food security challenges, to deploy the military to intimidate voters.”

Mr. Agalga also referenced the military’s role in the 2020 elections to support his argument.

“Otherwise, there should be timelines. We further backed our assertions with what happened in the roundup of the 2020 elections…So our suspicions are justifiable,” he added.

  • Govt will pursue external funding to support 2024/2025 Cocoa Season – Finance Minister

Govt will pursue external funding to support 2024/2025 Cocoa Season – Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has refuted recent claims made by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) about financing the 2024/2025 cocoa season independently.

Dr. Adam stated that contrary to COCOBOD’s reports, the government plans to seek external funding to back the sector.

In the monthly economic briefing held in Accra on Thursday, August 29, 2024, Dr. Adam explained that the government will rely on syndicated loans and other financial resources rather than shifting to self-financing, as previously suggested by COCOBOD.

“I want to take this opportunity to clarify that as part of measures to improve the financial viability of COCOBOD, the government for the 2024/2025 crop season will be sourcing funds through the syndication process and other alternative sources,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.

COCOBOD had earlier revealed plans to self-finance the upcoming cocoa season, starting in September 2024, with the aim of saving approximately US$150 million.

The board’s Chief Executive Officer, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, had championed this shift as a cost-saving measure.

Dr. Amin Adam’s comments suggest a continued reliance on external funding to support Ghana’s pivotal cocoa sector.
