Affirmative Action Bill should be approved immediately – Gender Minister appeals

Gender Minister Dakoa Newman passionately urged for the speedy approval of the Affirmative Action Bill during her address in Parliament on Wednesday, June 19.

Newman stressed the urgency of enacting the bill, which aims to bolster the representation and involvement of women in decision-making processes across various sectors.

She highlighted the bill’s importance in promoting gender equality and empowering Ghanaian women.

Newman shed light on the persisting gender disparities in the country, particularly in political and corporate leadership roles. Despite women’s significant contributions to national development, their presence in leadership positions remains disproportionately low.

The Affirmative Action Bill seeks to address this gap by establishing minimum quotas for women’s representation in key sectors, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

The Okaikwei South legislator underscored the broader implications of passing the bill, emphasizing that increased female representation in leadership roles can lead to more comprehensive and effective policies.

She argued that women offer unique perspectives and experiences crucial for addressing issues such as healthcare, education, and social welfare, thus promoting more holistic and responsive governance.

Newman called upon all stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, Civil Society Organizations, and the public, to rally behind the bill’s passage. She urged lawmakers to prioritize the bill in their legislative agenda and recognize its significance for the nation’s development.

Additionally, she appealed to advocacy groups to continue raising awareness about the bill and its potential impact on gender equality in Ghana.

In conclusion, Newman emphasized that the swift passage of the Affirmative Action Bill reflects a commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women in Ghana.

A 29-year-old man named Obed was lynched in Ayigbe town within the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The town’s residents are in shock after finding his body with bricks beside it.

In an interview with Adom News, some residents speculated that the deceased was a thief who was lynched by unknown individuals.

Meanwhile, Kofi Asare, the father of the deceased, has called for justice for his son.

He firmly asserted that his son was not a criminal, despite the rumors circulating.

  • Stop China Mall and China Town from derailing efforts of local manufacturers – GUTA to govt

Stop China Mall and China Town from derailing efforts of local manufacturers – GUTA to govt

The Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) is urging authorities to take decisive action and crack down on foreign involvement in the retail sector.

GUTA highlights that the retail market, once exclusively reserved for Ghanaians, has now become a haven for foreigners, particularly Chinese traders, who flood the market with inexpensive products.

Addressing the Customs, Controls, and Regulations Forum organized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), GUTA President Joseph Obeng expressed concern that foreigners are saturating Ghana’s retail sector with subsidized goods from abroad.

Mr. Obeng emphasized that this trend is gradually squeezing out Ghanaian traders and manufacturers from the market.

“We have China Mall and China Town, which have taken over 40% of the market, and are derailing the efforts of local manufacturers.”

“All they do is to have their subsidized goods being dumped here (in Ghana) and we do not have the courage to clamp on them,” he opined.

He disclosed that the market share of Ghanaian traders continues to decline.

“The local traders’ component is only 20%. The bulk of the goods is brought in by foreign traders.”

He elaborated that the activities of foreign traders, who frequently repatriate their earnings in foreign currencies, contribute to the depreciation of the cedi.

“They don’t bring the correspondent forex for trading, they only go to the black market and change the forex and destroy our economy.”

Over time, regulators have neglected to address the problem of dumping in Ghana’s retail sector. Despite the country’s laws mandating that certain retail enterprises be reserved for Ghanaians, it seems that foreigners are gradually encroaching on such domains.

The Customs, Controls, and Regulations forum, organized by the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, aims to discuss issues impacting businesses and the investor community. It serves as a platform to address investor concerns and shape policy reforms.

  • #HandsOffOurHotels Demo: Not all of us want to leave Ghana – Angry youth activist tell Akufo Addo

#HandsOffOurHotels Demo: Not all of us want to leave Ghana – Angry youth activist tell Akufo Addo

Ghanaian youth activist Bridget Bonnie has angrily indicated that not all young people in Ghana are willing to seek greener pastures outside the country.

She said, there are individuals who are committed to change the status quo and make Ghana a better place to be.

During the #HandsOffOurHotels demonstration in Accra on June 18, 2023 conveyed by the North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Bridget told The Independent Ghana that “Ghana is for us to build!”

The protest however was imperative to oppose the sale of four Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels, (Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and the Trust) to Rock City Hotel Limited, which is owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

This saw a significant number of Ghanaians turn up to express their displeasure towards the move which Bridget bonnie was not exempted.

She stated that Ghanaian leaders should not assume all young people want to travel abroad, as people like her have decided to stay and make Ghana a better place.

” It is sad that we want to sit and watch some group of people take Ghana as if its their personal property, as if its their personal biscuit they can chew at any time without accounting for it. If there is a state hotel that is not even doing well (I mean this ones are even doing well), as a cabinet minister, what you are suppose to do is to invest your knowledge into these hotels. Make sure they work for the state. But you want to buy them out. That is insentitive. So what are you leaving behind for your next generation? Or they think every Ghanaian wants to leave the country? No! Some of us wants to stay and build our country. We can’t do that when they buy off everything….? It can’t be done!

She also cautioned the young people supporting the sale of these hotels to reconsider their stance.

“The young people out there supporting this insanity should think about it. Ghana is for us to build. So would we watch a section of Ghanaians take everything from us?, The youth activist quizzed.

  • Asian companies increase presence as multinational corporations withdraw from Nigeria

Asian companies increase presence as multinational corporations withdraw from Nigeria

Inflation surges, currency depreciation accelerates, insecurity proliferates, and electricity shortages afflict Nigeria, leading US and European multinationals to depart.

However, amidst adversity, Asian firms and local companies perceive opportunities.

Last week, Singapore’s Tolaram acquired control of Guinness Nigeria from the UK’s Diageo.

Turkey’s Hayat Kimya and Nigeria’s Fouani Group have entered the diaper market after Procter & Gamble’s departure. Lagos-based Fidson Healthcare is capitalizing on GSK’s exit by expanding its product range and exporting.

Facing similar challenges as the departing multinationals, these firms succeed due to higher risk tolerance and different strategies.

Tolaram is a prime example. It has localized costs, milled flour, refined palm oil, and explored growing crops domestically, reducing exposure to currency fluctuations and foreign-exchange shortages. Positioned well, it expands while competitors withdraw.

Should Nigeria’s economy improve, these resilient companies will reap the benefits.

“We believe in the power of 230 million people,” said Girish Sharma, an executive director at Tolaram. The “Nigerian situation will correct and when that happens, we will be the biggest beneficiaries.’’

  • Raise more revenue domestically without increasing taxes – Prof Quartey tells govt

Amidst the renewed discourse on achieving a ‘Ghana Beyond Aid,’ Professor Peter Quartey, Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), has urged the government to explore innovative approaches to boost domestic revenue without burdening Ghanaians with higher taxes.

During an appearance on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the economist highlighted the potential benefits of digitizing the tax system, emphasizing that it would enhance revenue efficiency and reduce human discretion in tax collection.

While acknowledging the strides made by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and other institutions in digitizing aspects of the tax system, Prof Quartey stressed the need for further intensification of these efforts and expansion of the tax base to include the informal sector.

“We need to raise more revenue domestically, not by imposing higher taxes but by making the existing tax systems more efficient, and we’ve started that with digitization which GRA and the others are doing and I think we need to deepen that.

“And we need to remove the human interface. There is so much discretion when it comes to raising revenue in the country,” he stated.

Mr. Quartey’s statement follows remarks by Lord Paul Boateng, a Member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, who emphasized during a leadership lecture at the UPSA in Accra the need for Ghana to wean itself off foreign aid.

Lord Boateng asserted that reliance on external aid impedes significant growth in the country.

Concurring with Lord Boateng, the Director of ISSER highlighted that enhancing domestic revenue generation could lessen Ghana’s dependence on external funding sources.

Prof. Quartey also emphasized the importance of government reducing its expenditure to aid Ghana’s journey toward financial independence.

He questioned the rationale behind significant expenditure increases in the government’s annual budget statements despite revenue challenges, referencing budget statements from 2022 and 2023.

“We also need to look at our expenditure. I don’t think we are getting value for money for the expenditures, especially for the procurement of goods and services.

“It surprises me that in times of difficulty like this, if you look at the budget statement from 2023, 2022, and even before that we increased expenditure, sometimes, 42%, 30% and you ask yourself, if you are struggling to raise revenue yet your expenditure is still going up, how do you address all the beautiful things you raised in the Ghana Beyond Aid document? We need to go back to the drawing board,” he stated.

  • Focus on value addition and industralization to develop Ghana – GEPA

Focus on value addition and industralization to develop Ghana – GEPA

Stakeholders in Ghana’s and Africa’s export sector are urged to focus their efforts on adding value to their products and services to maximize revenue generation.

Officials from the Ghana Export Promotion Authority emphasize the importance of value-added products over raw materials.

Dr. Martin Akogti, Head of Research at GEPA, highlighted that out of the $3.94 billion generated from Non-Traditional Exports in 2023, $3.35 billion stemmed from the manufacturing sector, constituting 85% of Ghana’s NTEs for that year. The manufacturing sub-sector experienced an average annual growth rate of 14% in Non-Traditional Exports.

“Basically manufacturers are driving the Non- Traditional Exports. The reason is simple – when you add value to a product, the gains are higher than when you export the raw materials,” he expressed.

“If you take cocoa, chocolate alone is about a 120-billion-dollar-industry. In Ghana when we do the export of only the cocoa beans, the gains are small. But when you add value you earn more,” he added.

He cited numerous examples of other product lines, including shea, gold, oils, and more.

According to the Head of Research at GEPA, iron rods, plastic articles, and cocoa derivatives from Ghana are performing exceptionally well in the Sahel and other African countries. This success has been fueled by the operationalization of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS). He emphasized that the ETLS and AfCFTA offer an incredible opportunity for African traders, urging all stakeholders to seize this chance, identify market demands, industrialize, and engage in free trade.

Recognizing this opportunity, the Export Promotion Authority is committed to facilitating financial support for key manufacturers to enhance their production capacities. Dr. Akogti mentioned the Ghana Export-Import Bank (GEXIM) as a major institution that has provided assistance in this regard.

Chris Amponsah Sackey, Head of Public Relations at GEPA, joined Dr. Akogti for the latest episode of the Eye on Port TV program with Solomon Anderson.

Mr. Sackey discussed GEPA’s efforts to boost the contribution of Ghana’s Industrial Arts and Crafts Sector, which only accounted for 2.43% of non-traditional exports in 2023. Despite this, there is optimism for the industry, which is experiencing an average growth rate of 17.85%. Mr. Sackey noted improvements in the performance of ceramics and tiles.

“A lot of factories have been set up who produce tiles and when you go to Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, tiles are doing so well there in exports and that’s what is contributing to the surge in its contribution.”

He mentioned that basket-ware, paintings, textiles, and fabrics produced in Ghana are experiencing growing interest in the international market, and GEPA is committed to providing assistance to further boost their presence.

“Recently we had the Adinkra International Arts and Crafts Show, this is part of the programs being specially designed to ensure that we boost that sector. We had over 200 exhibitors displaying their products in Aburi. It was amazing and we are very optimistic that a lot of business will come out of that because we engaged international buyers who bought some samples and we believe a lot of orders will follow.”

He mentioned that GEPA is facilitating training, capacity building, and capital injection for these craftsmen to enhance their efficiencies.

An exemplary case, he stated, is the Bauxite Beads Production facility in Abompe, located in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.

Another initiative he highlighted was “Sound Out,” an Art Exhibition aimed at promoting artists’ works to enhance their trade both locally and internationally.

“The 1-year old boy who recently got his name in the Guinness Book of Records had his artwork displayed there and it was purchased and that contributed heavily to the successes he has chalked,” he revealed.

This and many more initiatives, he said, are being undertaken by his outfit to boost the potential of the industrial arts and crafts sector.

  • High inflation on food could become more severe – Seth Terkper

High inflation on food could become more severe – Seth Terkper

The Finance Minister during the Mahama administration, Seth Terkper, has disclosed that the current exorbitant food prices in the market could have been even higher if not for the rains.

During an interview on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, Terkper mentioned that the favorable weather conditions the country experienced helped alleviate the severe impact on the food supply.

“The current situation you’re talking about could have been worse if the rains had not been good. Of course, we know that if the rains fail because of heat and all that or drought. Any year the food [supply] has not been good, it has been tough.

“The May season, for instance, it’s always been tough. It’s only that the economy has been robust to support it,” he observed.

Terkper emphasized the importance of not viewing food prices in isolation but considering other crucial factors affecting them, such as the cost of fertilizer.

He elaborated that one strategy to tackle the increasing food prices was to enhance the value of exports, which could be complemented by a robust export support system.

“Exim Bank in our model was to look outward where Cocobod looks outward for farmers, only this time, it is going to look outward for those exporting already but need export finance. Those who are going to be adding value, so you need to get a loan in cedis and you export and then it is aggregated.”

Although data from the Ghana Statistical Service indicates that food inflation is at its lowest point in 13 months, these seemingly positive figures do not accurately portray the challenging economic circumstances.

  • Cedi’s value drops by 21% reaching GHS15.70 per US dollar

Cedi’s value drops by 21% reaching GHS15.70 per US dollar

The Ghana cedi continues to struggle against major trading currencies, losing 3.88% in value to the US dollar in the past week.

The depreciation represents an increase in the cedi’s year-to-date devaluation to 21.20%.

According to a report from myjoyonline.com, the cedi’s depreciation briefly follows the strengthening of the US dollar and heightened local foreign exchange demand.

However, it started the week of June 18, 2024, unchanged, selling at GH¢15.70 to $1 at major forex bureaus.

As part of measures to strengthen the US dollar, the US Federal Reserve signalled a single policy rate cut this year, contrary to market expectations of two cuts.

The move has sent the US dollar back index soaring about 100 basis points week-on-week, causing the cedi to depreciate against it and other major trading currencies.

The local currency also declined by 2.43% against the British Pound and 2.87% to the Euro last week.

Despite its current performance, the Ghana cedi is expected to bounce back stronger as the Government of Ghana and its official creditors have reached an agreement on debt restructuring terms.

This agreement would ensure Ghana receives a disbursement of the next tranche of the IMF bailout, made up of $360 million.

Analysts also believe this will support foreign exchange buffers, improve FX liquidity, and help stabilize the weakening cedi in the near term.

Former BoG Governor joins John Mahama’s 2024 campaign team

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled its National Campaign Team for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The Functional Executive Committee appointed the team, which will lead the party’s presidential and parliamentary campaigns.

Joshua Alabi has been chosen to head the flagbearer’s campaign, spearheading former President John Dramani Mahama’s effort to regain power after his defeat in the 2016 elections.

The team also includes notable members such as former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, and Dr. Mary Awusi.

Dr. Issahaku stepped down as Central Bank Governor a year after his appointment during the John Mahama administration, citing personal reasons effective April 1, 2017.

He was appointed by former President John Mahama, who left office after losing the December 7, 2016 elections.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Issahaku was the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana and previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Export Development and Agriculture Investment Fund.

Dr. Issahaku assumed leadership of the Bank of Ghana during a period of increasing inflation, a weakening cedi, and a banking sector crisis.

  • Cedi will remain worst-performing currency without political reform – Financial analyst warns

Cedi will remain worst-performing currency without political reform – Financial analyst warns

Financial analyst Prince Obiri Yeboah commented on Ghana’s position as the fourth worst-performing currency among the top 150 currencies globally, stating that it comes as no surprise.

The economist and banker cautioned that Ghana’s currency is likely to remain one of the worst-performing due to ongoing deceitful political practices.

He noted that in Ghana, every monetary transaction is conducted in US dollars, leading to the depreciation of the local currency.

Mr. Yeboah highlighted that even our national budgets are denominated in dollars.

He expressed concern over the practice of paying workers, including athletes, in US dollars.

Recent data from Bloomberg shows that the Cedi depreciated by 0.2% to 14.9335 per dollar by the close of trading in Accra on Monday, June 10, 2024.

Since the start of the year, the local currency has lost 20% of its value against the US dollar.

The Cedi’s recent poor performance is attributed to increased demand for US dollars to purchase petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and other imported goods.

Commenting on this, the economist said, “It is not surprising that Ghana’s currency has been ranked as the fourth worst performing currency globally. We will continue to be counted among the worst-performing currencies in the world because we always engage in the politics of deceit. This is a country where we use dollar-dollar quotations for designing our budget.”

“This is a country where our international hotels quote their charges in dollars. This is a country where people who work, i.e., the Black Stars, are paid in dollars. When the politicians are talking about this, they make it look as if we import so much from abroad, which is why our currency keeps depreciating. I have said this and will reiterate that if we continue to make these narrow arguments, we will continue to struggle.”

He explained that globally, over 70% of countries experience deficits in their trade balances.

“What this means is that when you evaluate the imports and exports of countries, the balance of trade is in deficit, including China, which is a major exporting country. Yet they have managed their affairs so that their local currency will not depreciate against other currencies.

He informed host Kwabena Agyapong that, as of 2022, the United States was the leading importing country, followed by France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and China in that order.

“In Africa, South Africa, Egypt, and Ivory Coast, all of them import more goods than Ghana. But what do we see about their currencies? I believe that we have failed to deal with the fundamental problems since the days of Adam, and so our currency will still be counted among the worst-performing currencies.

“We are not doing things right, and we are always trying to engage in the blame game and make excuses. As long as we continue to continue in that line, we shouldn’t expect anything different, and the cedi will continue to perform badly along with the competitors.”

#HandsOffOurHotels Demo: Go to your hometown an sell properties, leave Ga lands alone – Protestor tells Akufo Addo

Miriam, the NDC Branch Communicator at Anyaa Sowutuom, has asked Nana Addo Danquah to sell properties in his hometown, Akyem, instead of tampering with state assets.

According to her, the Ashantis and Akyems are fond of taking what belongs to the Ga people, but the Gas will not permit that this time.

She told The Independent Ghana that if Akufo-Addo is itching to sell properties, then his hometown is where he ought to consider.

“I want us to tell Akufo Addo that he should go to Akyem his hometown, there are properties there, he should go and sell them rather and not Ghana’s assets. I said Akufo Addo should go and sell properties in his hometown and leave Ga lands alone. This year the GAs have become very serious and we will not allow the Akyems and Ashantes to take Ga lands. Accra is not for Akufo Addo. The land is meant for the GAs and so we will not leave it for Akufo Addo”the protester sternly expressed.

Our leadership thinks about themselves and not the people they serve – Fifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, asserts that Ghana has reached a stage marked solely by governmental insensitivity.

He attributes this situation to the rampant corruption and greed dominating the country.

“What we have in place now is simply leadership that thinks about itself and thinks very little about the people,” he said during the “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration on Tuesday, June 18.

Mr. Kwetey emphasized the importance of the protest in uniting people against various wrongdoings, including the government’s insensitivity, greed, and selfishness.

When questioned whether his party would maintain its current position if the NDC were elected into power, Mr. Kwetey firmly asserted that wrongdoing must always be acknowledged as such.

He asserted that the nation ought to be in a condition where devoted citizens steadfastly champion what is just.

“It’s really a shame that the NPP would say all that they have said, get into power and do the very opposite.

“I can tell you within my own party, it is very loud and clear that we simply don’t want a situation where we’re comparing ourselves with the NPP. We need to rise up to do what is right for the country,” the NDC General Secretary said.

He underscored the imperative for government officials to put an end to the self-serving behavior and greed they exhibit.

“The country must be number one, and that is what we are fighting for. To reach that state where you can no longer hide under a political party to do what’s wrong, hoping your political party will protect you, is simply unacceptable,” Mr Kwetey said.

  • NDC could be defeated in Northern Region – Koku Anyidoho ahead of 2024 Election

NDC could be defeated in Northern Region – Koku Anyidoho ahead of 2024 Election

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has expressed pessimism for victory for the party in the Northern region, traditionally a stronghold, in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general election.

During an interview session on Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Mr. Anyidoho attributed the potential decline to three main factors.

Firstly, he mentioned the discontent among the Dagombas over the removal of Haruna Iddrisu as Minority Leader, suggesting they might vote against the NDC.

Secondly, he noted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointing Northerners to key government positions, such as Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam as Finance Minister, could garner votes for the NPP in the north.

“If you combine the three Northern regions, North East, Northern Region, Savannah, the North East Region has 6 seats; NPP has 4, we have 2. Northern proper (Region) has 18, NPP has 9, and NDC has 9. Savannah has 7, we have 4, they have 3. When you add them all up, NPP has one more seat than NDC, something unprecedented. And this was when Bawumia was just a running mate.

“Now that he is the flagbearer, the dynamics have shifted. This is North East where he has already made an impact. In the Northern Region itself, something has changed. What happened? NDC mishandled the transition of power in the minority, making it appear as if Haruna was disgracefully removed.”

He continued, “Haruna is Dagomba, right? And he is part of the 9-9. Shortly after his removal as Minority Leader, Nana Addo, in his reshuffle this year, appointed almost all the Dagomba NPP MPs to ministerial positions, including the Finance Minister.

NPP will soon release 300 state-owned companies sold to persons now criticizing sale of SSNIT-owned hotels – Deputy Info. Minister

The Deputy Minister for Information has announced that the NPP will soon release a list of 300 state-owned companies sold to individuals who are now criticizing the sale of SSNIT-owned hotel shares to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Sylvester Tetteh made this announcement while condemning the June 18, 2024 ‘Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration’ led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, which protested the sale of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust shares. He stated that the list would be published in the coming weeks.

Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Good Morning Ghana, the deputy minister asserted that the demonstration and the concerns over the hotel sales are being used by Ablakwa and the NDC to score political points.

“For me, I think that where we are today, yes it is true that we must speak up, we must stand up for matters that we are not happy about, but due process must also be followed. So, I think that hitting the street to find political gain and political advantage of it is not the right approach.

“We, in the subsequent weeks, will begin to update Ghanaians on how 300 companies ended up with some individuals, and today they are pontificating more righteously than the Pope himself. Stay tuned,” he said.

He said that some of the people who are not talking about the sale of the SSNIT hotels and accusing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of state capture were quiet when properties of the state were being sold to bigwigs of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) when they were in power.

He began his statement by sharing a brief of state-owned properties sold to NDC members, including properties of the Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNTC) and the Ambassador Hotel.

“But the people who have suddenly found their voices against the sale of state assets, I believe that they should have questioned how GNTC Bakeries at La, GNTC Bakeries at Kumasi, GNTC Bakeries at Takoradi, GNTC Supermarket Dansoman, GNTC Supermarket Kanda, GNTC Supermarket at Ringway were sold.

“How the Kumasi Catering Rest House was sold, how the Ambassador Hotel was sold, and the beneficiaries of all these properties over a period of time and how ownership has changed over a period of time. And some of them who are still within the NDC are still holding on to these properties,” he said.

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has extended its welfare policy with the State Insurance Company for the third consecutive year.

During the agreement signing ceremony for the scheme, President Bessa Simons urged members to enroll in the MUSIGA SIC-Life Insurance program to access its benefits.

Highlighting that this marks the third year of the Life Insurance scheme for MUSIGA members, Simons emphasized the numerous beneficiaries across the country over this period, underscoring the importance of membership subscription.

“Accidents and emergencies are unannounced and they confront us when we least expect hence the need to be protected against such unfortunate occurrences,” Bessa Simons noted.

“On his part, the MUSIGA General Secretary, S.K Agyemang expressed his excitement at the signing of the contract. He noted that the scheme is a buffer against unforseen challenges and also encouraged all musicians to sign up to the scheme,” he said.

Under this program, families of deceased MUSIGA members who are enrolled in the scheme will receive GHC 5,000.00 in addition to other benefits such as support for permanent disability, child welfare, and parental assistance, among other provisions.

Andrew Adu-Asante from SIC-Life’s Corporate Group Business department commended MUSIGA for implementing such a beneficial initiative for its members.

7 things #HandsOffOurHotel protestors are demanding from Akufo-Addo

North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has successfully petitioned President Akufo-Addo over the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

On Tuesday, June 18, representatives of the President received the petition on behalf of Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.

Reading out the petition, Mr Ablakwa asked the president to halt the sale of the hotels as it was not in the interest of the country.

He also called on the president to ensure state assets deemed profitable are never sold.

The North Tongu MP additionally demanded that Akufo Addo should not sell workers’ properties without the permission and consent of workers, prevent Ministers from buying state assets, prevent the Blay family from any further illegal encroachment and get off Labadi Hotel’s beachfront.

He also wants the President to ensure state assets are not deliberately run down so that politicians will successfully sell them to themselves and prevent Bryan Acheampong and all politicians and politically exposed persons from buying state assets.

Meanwhile, several individuals who partook in today’s protest have been hospitalised.

The protest, organized by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, saw tensions escalate when police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Ablakwa confirmed that some of the injured protesters have been transported to a health facility for treatment.

According to him, some protestors collapsed after being pepper sprayed without provocation. He was not able to indicate the exact hospitals they were sent to.

He however noted that he will engage his team and visit the victims at the health centres they have been admitted to
The demonstration aimed to halt the sale of four SSNIT hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company owned by Bryan Acheampong.

In a fervent address, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his determination to prevent the sale. “It has become the whole of Ghana versus the few lootocrats who are determined to continue with their state capture, and I am clear in my mind that they will have no choice but to listen,” he said.

“Even if you don’t listen and you try to sell this hotel, how are they going to have access to the hotel? How? Because we will block that access.

These are our assets, and we are saying you haven’t consulted us.”

He further emphasized, “Rest assured, we are confident these hotels will not be sold.”

  • Meet blacklisted Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo who won two Oscars

Meet blacklisted Hollywood writer Dalton Trumbo who won two Oscars

On June 22, 1950, the infamous Red Channels pamphlet was released, implicating some of Hollywood’s biggest stars as communists.

Amidst the “Red Scare” that ensued, Dalton Trumbo, who later penned scripts for Roman Holiday and Spartacus, faced allegations of disseminating subversive ideas through his films and was imprisoned. He recounted his ordeals to the BBC in 1960.

During a BBC interview with screenwriter Dalton Trumbo by his Hollywood swimming pool in 1960, he had recently authored scripts for two major films of the year. Despite his soaring success, interviewer Robert Robinson detected a “certain reticence” in him, surmising that he harbored “no desire to resurrect old conflicts.” It was unsurprising that he felt somewhat bruised.

Trumbo had endured 13 years of imprisonment, Hollywood blacklisting, and clandestine work under pseudonyms, all due to the US anti-communist crusade. His only offense was refusing to disclose his communist affiliations to a US government committee in 1947, asserting his legal right under the First Amendment to hold any political beliefs he chose.

Of course, Trumbo had been a member of the Communist Party but that wasn’t the point, and in any case, he was far from a stereotypical “Red”. He later told the BBC: “I never felt the slightest guilt about making what I earned – the pictures were making millions. If I got a small part, fine, I enjoyed it. The idea of guilt, I’m not puritanical, would have startled me.”

Born in 1905, Trumbo’s writing career took off in the 1930s and by the end of the decade, he was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid screenwriters. In that era, Hollywood was isolated from the worst of the Great Depression thanks to its popular and lucrative escapism in a troubled world, but a strong social conscience was stirring among some in the entertainment industry.

Trumbo later told the BBC in 1973: “People joined the Communist Party because it was doing things that they felt should be done. It was opposing the rise of fascism all through Europe. It was helping those who were refugees.”

    Subversion through cinema

Established in 1938, the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC), later infamous for its scrutiny of the film industry, aimed to investigate “subversive” tendencies, particularly communist affiliations.

However, the landscape shifted with the outbreak of World War Two, leading to unexpected alliances. Adolf Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 transformed Stalin’s communist Russia into a US ally.

During the war, Hollywood contributed to the war effort by producing a few pro-Soviet films, such as the 1943 curiosity Mission to Moscow. Director Michael Curtiz, who had previously won an Oscar for Best Director for Casablanca, helmed this production.

Following the war’s conclusion, the alliance between the US and the Soviet Union dissolved, giving rise to a new era of Cold War apprehension. This climate of fear regarding the perceived threat of communism provided fertile ground for HUAC to extend its influence.

In 1947, Trumbo was one of 10 Hollywood writers and directors put on the stand during its hearings on alleged communist propaganda in the movie business. One question was repeatedly asked of them: “Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?”

In response, Trumbo said: “I believe I have the right to be confronted with any evidence which supports this question. I should like to see what you have.” His answer did not go down well. All of the “Hollywood 10” refused to testify and were found guilty of contempt of Congress.

As Trumbo recalled to the BBC’s Robert Robinson in 1960, the studio heads convened a meeting at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel where they announced the decision to blacklist the 10 men. He said: “They made this announcement that 10 persons who had refused to divulge before the committee their political affiliation would no longer be employed in the Hollywood motion picture industry, as they call it. I hate to call it an industry.”

While HUAC was the high-profile face of the anti-communist investigations, other Hollywood suspects were targeted more insidiously by a pamphlet called Red Channels, published in 1950. Among those implicated were actors Edward G Robinson and Orson Welles, writers Arthur Miller and Dashiell Hammett, musicians Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland and performers Lena Horne and Burl Ives.
Subtitled “the report of communist influence in radio and television”, inclusion on the list was enough to damage or even finish a career. The repercussions for Trumbo were even more severe.

In the same month that Red Channels was published, Trumbo went to prison for his conviction, or as he told the BBC with heavy irony, “I was given excellent board and lodging at the Federal Correctional Institution in Ashland, Kentucky for a year.”

    Hitting rock bottom

Upon his release from jail, Trumbo’s name and reputation had been wiped out by the blacklist. Unable to find work in California, he moved with his family to Mexico City. He said: “I remained there two years. I was not happy. I also went spectacularly broke. And I returned and we have lived here ever since.”

No longer able to write scripts using his own name, he had to turn to the black market to beat the blacklist. “I had methods of circumventing it so that I was never entirely out of work,” he admitted to the BBC.

“However, the persons who were in a position to gamble for my services, that is to gamble that my relationship with the picture would not be revealed to the picture’s ultimate damage, were doing less expensive pictures and hence I earned much less money.”

He had to pen scripts under various pseudonyms or employ other writers to front his work. While some of these screenplays were for B-movies without the prestige of his pre-blacklist projects, they also encompassed the 1953 masterpiece Roman Holiday, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

In 1957, masquerading as Robert Rich, Trumbo clinched the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The Brave One, a poignant tale of a boy and his pet bull.

Trumbo would later tell the BBC: “A number of claimants came forth, saying they were Robert Rich, or that the story really had been stolen from them. It was a very serious problem to admit that I had done it, and I certainly was going to say nothing because you cooperate with your man. And I must say, confidence in that period was beautifully kept… We had a mutual interest, which was economic.”

The absurdity of the situation exposed cracks in the Hollywood blacklist, and Trumbo could manoeuvre himself back into the mainstream movie business. First, he was hired openly by producer Otto Preminger to write the screen adaptation for Exodus, Leon Uris’s best-selling 1958 novel about the creation of the state of Israel. Next, Hollywood star Kirk Douglas picked him to write the screenplay for Spartacus, directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Both films were released in 1960, and by the time Trumbo was interviewed by the BBC, he was confident that the blacklist had been effectively smashed. By the time of Trumbo’s death in 1976, times had changed and he was fully vindicated.

A year earlier, while in poor health, he finally received his Oscar for The Brave One. In 1993, 40 years after the release of Roman Holiday, Trumbo was posthumously awarded an Oscar for his screenplay for that film. Trumbo himself was the subject of a Hollywood biopic in 2015. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was Oscar-nominated for his wry portrayal of the writer.

Towards the end of his life, Trumbo acknowledged that in some ways he had been more fortunate than some other people caught up in the “Red Scare”. “It was a matter of total disaster for others – financial, matrimonial, for some of their children,” he said. “And, you know, the success of a few should not temper the frightful quality of what went on. It was terrible.”

He praised his co-stars, Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez and called them “more than old friends”.

“You are soulmates, and I’m looking forward to watching each other change for the rest of our lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, Angelina Jolie secured her first Tony Award for producing The Outsiders, which won Best Musical and garnered three additional awards out of 12 nominations.

The 49-year-old actress was accompanied on stage by her 15-year-old daughter, Vivienne.

In her acceptance speech, director Danya Taymor acknowledged Jolie among the “great women who have lifted me up.”

The production later clinched the prestigious Best Musical award, prompting Jolie to return to the stage.

The play, based on S.E. Hinton’s book, explores the conflict between two rival gangs of white Americans separated by socioeconomic status.

It triumphed over musical rival Hell’s Kitchen, a semi-autobiographical account of Alicia Keys, which received 13 nominations and won two awards.

One of Hell’s Kitchen’s wins was for theater veteran Kecia Lewis, who took home the award for Featured Actress.

In an emotional on-stage speech, Lewis said: “40 years ago yesterday I walked into the Imperial Theatre to begin my Broadway career at 18 years old.

“I have had so many amazing experiences and some heartbreaking ones, too. I took a short break from showbusiness and raised a son as a single parent while trying to build a career.

“This moment is the one I dreamed for most of those 40 years, so I say to everyone who can hear my voice – don’t give up.”

Keys and Jay-Z surprised the audience by joining the musical cast to perform their 2009 hit “Empire State of Mind” in a tribute to New York.

Stereophonic, which made history with 13 nominations, won five awards, including Best Play.

In his acceptance speech, playwright David Adjmi highlighted the challenges of building a career in the arts and emphasized the need for increased funding.

The play centers on a fictional rock band from the 1970s as they work on producing an album.

Elsewhere, Hollywood star Jeremy Strong won his first Tony Award for Lead Actor in a Play for An Enemy of the People.

The 45-year-old, known for his role as Kendall in Succession, praised Henrik Ibsen’s cautionary environmental play, calling it “a cry from the heart” with “difficult truths that are staring us down right now.”

Strong’s character is a doctor who stands firm against being silenced after discovering contamination in public baths.

Another first-time winner was Sarah Paulson, who took home the award for Best Actress in a Lead Role, surpassing Rachel McAdams and Jessica Lange.

Paulson received the award for her performance in the revival of the darkly comic drama Appropriate, which depicts a dysfunctional family squabbling over their recently deceased father’s inheritance.

The 49-year-old Ratched actress is now halfway to achieving EGOT status, having previously won an Emmy in 2016 for her role in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

During the in-memoriam segment, US star Nicole Scherzinger, who recently won at the Olivier Awards for her role in Sunset Boulevard, delivered a moving performance.

Twinsdntbeg photographers describe high-profile nude photoshoots as part of art

The renowned photography duo, Twinsdntbeg, has sparked debate in the artistic community with their provocative yet captivating views on nudity in art.

In a recent interview with Lily Mohammed, they shared their experiences photographing high-profile women in nude photoshoots, focusing on the artistic significance rather than mere exposure.

“People often rush to judgment when they hear ‘nude photoshoot,’ but for us, nudity is art,” one of the twins explained. “We’ve had very high-profile clients who appreciate this perspective. They see it as an expression of art and beauty, not as something vulgar.”

The photographers elaborated on the challenges they initially faced. “When we started, convincing clients about our artistic vision was tough. Now, many high-profile ladies come to us, eager for a nude shoot that tells a story through our lens.”

They stressed that their work aims to capture the essence of their subjects, not just their physical appearance.

“The way we photograph a nude model is meant to evoke the same emotions you feel when looking at classical art in museums. Our goal is to make viewers see beyond the nudity to the story being told through light, shadow, and composition.”

Addressing concerns about the thin line between art and pornography, Twinsdntbeg were clear.

“There’s a significant difference between what we do and what some might consider explicit. Our work is about creating meaningful, thought-provoking images. The lighting, angles, and overall concept play crucial roles in ensuring the final image is art, not exposure.”

They pointed out that true artistry in nude photography involves professionalism and a deep understanding of the subject. “You can do naked shoots, but they must have a purpose. It’s not just about showing someone’s body; it’s about making a statement, telling a story through the image.”

The photographers concluded by reiterating their belief in the power of photography. “Photography is about storytelling. Each shot, especially in nude art, should highlight and convey a deeper narrative. That is the essence of our work.”

Twinsdntbeg’s approach remains steadfast in challenging societal norms, promoting a perspective on nudity that honors the human form as an artistic canvas rather than a source of controversy.

Recognizing King Paluta’s focus on the business side of music, Don Little warned that associating with political figures could lead to premature affiliation with a specific political party.

He said: “If I am asked to choose between the two, I’ll go for a Dutch passport because what will I be doing with a PhD? What’s even in that PhD, and I want to know what that PhD involves and entails.”

“We want money because when I wake up in the morning and give thanks and praise to God, the next thing is about money and money.

“Apart from money, that’s all, and there’s nothing that I think about again because when you have money, you can even prolong your life in this world.

“We need money, so don’t let anyone tell us that a good name is better than riches, but a good name and riches are both okay.”

Ras Kuuku also provided an example, stating that holders of a Dutch passport can extend their lives during illness because they have sufficient funds to afford treatment, which in turn prolongs their lives.

“Imagine two people having kidney problems, and they both go to the hospital and are given two weeks to find money, but one is unable to get the money. Don’t you know the one who got the money for treatment has bought life to extend his stay on earth?”

This call to action was made during a crucial meeting with representatives from the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC).

In his address, Dr. Otokunor outlined the challenges currently facing the nation’s economy, underscoring that without significant reforms, sustainable development would remain elusive.

“The survival and growth of our nation hinge on a comprehensive restructuring of our economic frameworks,” he stated.

“It is imperative that we adopt new strategies that are resilient and inclusive to navigate the complexities of the modern economic landscape.”

Dr. Otokunor further highlighted the proactive steps taken by ex-president John Dramani Mahama, who established a committee known as the NDC LAB.

This committee, comprising seasoned technocrats, is tasked with conducting in-depth analysis of the economy.

The NDC LAB’s mandate is to provide actionable insights and innovative solutions to the economic issues plaguing the country.

How can cedi depreciation affect fufu – Allotey Jacobs fumes over price hikes

Former NDC Central Regional Chairman, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, is criticizing the tendency to blame the depreciation of the Ghanaian currency, the cedi, against the dollar for all economic issues.

He has observed that some vendors of fufu, porridge, rice, and other basic foods who have reduced their portions are attributing it to the dollar’s value lately.

Based on this observation, Mr. Allotey is asserting that Ghanaians are overly leveraging the dollar crisis to charge exorbitant prices for food and services.

“What I am saying is that if I go to buy fufu today and notice the portion has reduced, you can’t tell me it’s because of the dollar,” Allotey Jacobs said.

Adding that “we need to tell Ghanaians that this mentality will not help us in any way.”

Afenyo-Markin sparks anger among minority MPs in parliament

A fierce debate ensued in Parliament regarding the Free SHS policy following Majority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin’s request for clarification from Ranking Member for Education Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe.

The dispute arose when Afenyo-Markin cited media reports indicating that Nortsu-Kotoe, MP for Akatsi North, opposed the introduction of a Free SHS bill that had not yet been presented to Parliament.

“I would like to address a matter of public importance raised by the Member of Parliament and Ranking Member on Education for Akatsi North, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe. He allegedly stated that he is kicking against the bill being introduced. I believe this is a forum where he can clarify his stance so we can properly understand his views because media reports can sometimes misquote or misrepresent,” said Afenyo-Markin.

However, as Afenyo-Markin spoke, the Deputy Minority Leader approached Nortsu-Kotoe for a discussion.

In response, Minority Chief Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza asserted that Afenyo-Markin was acting improperly.

“The Majority Leader is completely out of order. He based his comments on a media report, which is not before this House. Our standing orders allow us to ask questions directly to colleagues. If you want to know his thoughts on Free SHS, file a question, and he will answer you,” Agbodza said.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that his intention was not to pose a question but to seek clarification, citing the House rules in support as it pertains to a matter of national importance.

Minority Chief Whip Agbodza reiterated that there was currently no Free SHS bill before Parliament.

He underscored that the Minority would take a position if such a bill were introduced.

Agbodza also clarified that the Minority Leader had affirmed that the Minority did not oppose Free SHS.

The Speaker of Parliament intervened, noting that the leadership had previously agreed to limit time spent in the chamber and had scheduled a meeting.

However, another MP insisted on discussing the matter, deeming it significant.

Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh endorsed Afenyo-Markin‘s request, seeing no issue with the Majority Leader’s inquiry.

At this juncture, approximately five Minority MPs rose to their feet, further escalating tension in the House.

A visibly upset Murtala Mohammed, MP for Tamale Central, expressed his frustration, highlighting the absence of members from the Majority side.

“The challenges confronting us would not have happened, and I can quote what you have said, ‘that the NDC is to scrap the Free SHS’. My point has to do with the unseriousness on the team he leads. There are only seven Majority MPs present; yesterday they were just five. Now you think that it is important for us to discuss this matter. You are a leader of government business; what should be of concern to you is to ensure your members are in the House. I came here at 8 am, your members are still not here at 5:50 pm. They are following your presidential candidate, dancing Azonto, and saying, ‘Give me the steer’,” he said.

During the ongoing debate, the MP for Ho West expressed concerns about the quorum, noting that only 10 MPs from the Majority and 30 from the Minority were present in the House.

The Speaker called for the bell to be rung, warning that if the House did not achieve quorum, it would be adjourned.

This action was supported by Dominic Ayine, who referenced procedural rules to address the quorum matter.

Subsequently, the discussion in the House shifted to issues involving Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and the third witness in the ongoing ambulance case at an Accra High Court, Richard Jakpa.

“Are you a good Muslim when a Christian believes in the Quran more than you? – Frafra chief to Muslims

The President of the Ashanti Regional Council of Chiefs for the Frafra community in the Ashanti region, Alhaji Musah Akambonga, has expressed his concerns, stating that it would be disheartening if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were to become president solely due to Christian support.

He emphasized the importance of Muslim endorsement for Dr. Bawumia, highlighting his hope to actively campaign for the Vice President.

Characterizing him as honest and competent, the Frafra chief emphasized the necessity of someone like Dr. Bawumia to lead the nation towards better prospects.

“Are you a good Muslim when a Christian believes in the Quran more than you?

“Don’t disgrace us by sitting aloof while Christians alone make Oheneba Bawumia a president on the 7th of December, 2024. It will be a disgrace if investigations reveal that Christians alone made him president on the 7th of December.”

He urged them to unite and support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid.

Alhaji Akambonga made this plea to a group of Muslims at the Kumasi Central Mosque during a campaign stop.

The visit, part of the flagbearer’s three-day tour of the Ashanti region, drew a crowd of Muslims who warmly received him as he outlined his vision for Ghana’s future.

Inhumanity! – Ablakwa reacts to alleged abandoning of patient in the bush

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is demanding the immediate summoning of the board and management of the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, along with the Ministry of Health, to respond to allegations that a patient was abandoned in a bush, leading to her death.

The woman was reportedly left in a bush at Gomoa Ojobi in the Central Region.

According to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the incident represents “the height of inhumanity, and Parliament should take an interest.”

The media reported on Wednesday, June 12, that a woman with casts on both legs, wrapped in a cloth, and with a wheelchair beside her, had been found abandoned in a bush.

Eyewitnesses in the community claim that the woman was left there by an ambulance from the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 14, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa condemned the act and called for all stakeholders involved to be urgently summoned to address the issue.

“It has been reported that doctors and nurses at the Winneba Government just threw out a patient who had an accident because they couldn’t locate her family.

“They just took her in an ambulance and went and dumped her in the bush and she died after three days.”

The MP specifically demanded that “we must summon the Health Minister, the Ghana Health Service, and the board and management of the Winneba Government Hospital.”

Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, mentioned that he has already requested a full report from the hospital regarding the incident.

Earlier today, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) announced that it has begun investigations into the matter.

The Service’s Director-General, Patrick Kuma-Aboagye said investigations have commenced to “establish the authenticity or otherwise of the story in line with the existing practices in the public service to enable it to take appropriate action(s).”

The Majority Leader argues that Parliament should permit the Ghana Health Service to finalize its investigation into the issue.

Addressing the issue, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin voiced concern over the repeated occurrences of such incidents in the country and urged the Ghana Health Service to expedite its investigation.

NDC members allegedly attacked by NPP thugs in Sehwi Wiawso Constituency

Allegedly, New Patriotic Party (NPP) thugs have reportedly attacked some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Sehwi Wiawso Constituency of the Western North Region.

Reports indicate that some individuals were assaulted on the main street of Sehwi Boako within the constituency, while others faced attacks in their residences.

Speaking to Adom News, certain victims claimed that the thugs were led by a recognized NPP member within the community. Allegedly, this party member instructed the thugs to target the victims’ locations for the assaults.

They alleged that the assailants damaged items in their rooms, such as television sets and other possessions.

Moreover, certain victims recounted being assaulted with machetes and pump-action guns.

Reports suggest that one of the NDC members had spoken out against the President of the Sehwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyire Kwasi Bumagamah, who happens to be the father of the NPP parliamentary candidate for Sehwi Wiawso.

The occurrence has been reported to the police for thorough investigation and potentially to apprehend the suspects.

42-year-old traditional healer arrested for suspected ritual killing of 11-year-old

Police in Kiboga District, central Uganda, have arrested a 42-year-old traditional healer following the discovery of an 11-year-old pupil who was found dead after leaving her home to sell boiled maize at night.

On Thursday, police reported that parts of Oliver Namanda’s body, a pupil at Fairway Nursery School and resident of Buzibwera cell in Kiboga District, were found by a boy sent to gather grass for animals on land owned by Sekandi in Kirurumba cell.

“Preliminary findings indicate that on June 10, 2024, at about 10 pm, the victim left home to Kiboga town vending boiled fresh maize dressed up in a yellow T-shirt and black skirt and from then did not return home. The case was reported to police on June 11 and search efforts immediately started.”

“On June 12, 2024, at around 11:30 am body parts of Namanda were seen by a young boy who had gone to collect some grass for animals in kibanja (piece of land) of Mr Sekandi in Kirurumba cell and informed the parents. We were later informed about the incident by LC1 of the area and immediately our task team led by DPC Kiboga responded to the scene of crime,” said Wamala region police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala.

Police said internal organs such as the lungs and heart, among others, were found missing from the girl’s body.

“The abdomen was cut off from the legs and taken away. However, the two legs were all abandoned at the crime scene. The body parts have been recovered and taken to Kiboga Hospital mortuary pending postmortem. Exhibits including a knicker, and black skirt suspected to be for the deceased have been recovered,” she said.

A police canine led detectives to a shrine in Kirurumba cell owned by Madinah Nakyeyune. She was arrested and is currently detained at Kiboga Police Station as investigations continue.

“Search efforts are on to recover missing body parts. Our task teams are doing all it takes to have more suspects arrested and brought to justice. We urge parents to be cautious about their children’s safety in and outside the home,” Ms Kawala said.

This incident follows just two months after the beheading of two young siblings in the same district in a suspected ritual sacrifice.

Five-year-old Easter Nakasumba and her two-year-old sister, Sylvia Nantongo, went missing on April 3, 2024, after their parents, who had taken them to their farm, asked them to return home for lunch.

Their mutilated bodies were later found near a brick-laying site.

    Peeved market women slam Akufo-Addo

Ghanaian market women who are irritated by the economic hardship have slammed president Akufo-Addo.

The market women portrayed that they are upset with some policies like the introduction of e-levy and the excessive borrowing of money that has not reflected in the country’s development.

In a video spotted by TIGpost, the women were seen passionately voicing their concerns and rating Akufo-Addo’s performance as president over the past four years as zero.

“As for Akufo-Addo, he has ruined the NPP because we had no idea he was going to be such a dishonest leader.”

“Nana Addo, in particular, is deceitful. He lied his way into power. Everything he said about John Mahama was untrue. We didn’t experience this level of hardship in the past, even when we were paying school fees. Now, he says we shouldn’t pay school fees, but he has also reduced school meals to just waakye and groundnut soup.”

“Out of nowhere, he introduced the e-levy. He has been borrowing money since the days of Yaa Asantewaa, but it isn’t being used for anything productive in the country. Children are sent home from school while mothers are in the market struggling to make a living.”

“How much was petrol before he became president? Wasn’t it 14.00? He promised a reduction when he became president. Is it fair for a grown man like him to lie to us? He isn’t considering the future, only thinking about today. What is the meaning of this?, the market women “cried out”

Digitalization vital for economic growth – ECOWAS representative

ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Baba Gana Waki, has emphasized the vital role of digitalization in the economic advancement of member states.

He noted that in an era where digitalization is pivotal to economic growth, young people worldwide are utilizing information and communication technology (ICT) to address unemployment.

During an interview amid a 10-day intensive program aimed at equipping over 200 Ghanaian youth with essential digital skills, Mr. Waki highlighted that no economy can prosper in the contemporary era without embracing digital technologies.

This initiative, running from 3rd to 14th June, aims to empower hundreds of young individuals, equipping them with the necessary tools to thrive in the swiftly evolving digital economy.

It represents a significant effort to tackle the escalating rates of youth unemployment in the country.

As part of ECOWAS’s broader regional development strategy, the program concentrates on vital areas such as coding, software, mobile and web development (front and back-end) during the first week, followed by cable TV development in the subsequent week.

Its objective is to bridge the skills gap and prepare participants for opportunities in the global digital marketplace.

Mr. Waki emphasized that the future of the sub-region lies in the hands of its young people.

He highlighted that youth unemployment poses an existential threat to national and regional security, given that about 65 percent of the population in the sub-region consists of youth.

“Because of the over reliance on government and White-collar jobs, the youth are unable to get employment in government circles. The best way for them to escape this cycle is to be able to train in ICT to acquire digital skills and create their own jobs,” he added.

Mr. Wakil emphasized that without harnessing and nurturing the potential of youth, the economies of Ghana and other sub-regional nations would struggle to compete effectively on the global stage.

He highlighted that the younger generation needs to adopt digital transformation, possessing digital skills, access, and assets to actively contribute to shaping the future of the sub-region.

The ECOWAS Resident Representative noted that with the evolution of traditional job markets and the emergence of new opportunities, integrating digital skills has become imperative for economic sustainability and personal career growth.

He reiterated that the ECOWAS Commission has fully embraced ICT, establishing a new department on Innovation and Digitalization to align the sub-region with global standards and foster competitiveness with developed nations.

Mr. Wakil mentioned that ECOWAS has implemented a Regional Action Plan on Digitalization to drive digital technology adoption across all levels, aligning member states’ efforts to accelerate growth, boost productivity, and create employment opportunities in the sub-region.

  • BoG defends revocation of GN Bank’s license

BoG defends revocation of GN Bank’s license

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has defended its decision to revoke GN Bank’s license in 2019, pointing to major regulatory violations.

In a detailed statement, the Central Bank clarified that the now-defunct bank failed to adhere to essential financial regulations and banking standards, jeopardizing its operational stability.

Referring to an August 2019 statement, BoG highlighted that GN Bank did not meet capital adequacy, liquidity, governance, and risk management requirements.

“GN Bank consistently failed to meet the minimum capital requirements, raising concerns about its ability to absorb losses and protect depositors. It also struggled with liquidity management, which affected its capacity to meet withdrawal demands from customers.

“There were also deficiencies in GN Bank’s governance structure and risk management practices, which contributed to operational inefficiencies and heightened risk exposure,” the statement read in parts.

As a result, BoG’s license revocation was deemed essential to protect the financial system and safeguard depositors.

This development follows a few weeks after the founder, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, took steps to reclaim the bank’s license to revive operations across Ghana.

Read the full statement below: Licence revocation of GN Savings and Loans Limited

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) on August 16, 2019 revoked the licences of twenty-three (23) insolvent savings and loans companies and finance house companies. These actions were taken pursuant to Section 123 (1) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), which requires the BoG to revoke the licence of a Bank or Specialised Deposit-Taking Institution (SDI) where the BoG determines that the institution is insolvent. The BoG also appointed a Receiver for the specified institutions in line with section 123 (2) of Act 930.

The Bank of Ghana explained that the revocation of the licences of the institutions had become necessary because they were insolvent even after a reasonable period within which it had engaged with them in the hope that they would be recapitalised by their shareholders to return them to solvency. The BoG gave reasons for the revocation of the licence of each of the institutions mentioned on the list. Below are the reasons for the revocation of the licence of GN Savings and Loans Company.

GN SAVINGS AND LOANS LTD. (Statement of August 16, 2019)

GN Savings and Loans Company Limited was originally incorporated as First National Savings and Loans (FNSL) Company Limited and licensed as a Savings and Loans Company on 8th May 2006. It was subsequently issued with a universal banking license by the Bank of Ghana on 4th September 2014 and was renamed GN Bank Limited.

On 4th January 2019, the Bank of Ghana approved a request to reclassify GN Bank from a universal bank to a Savings and Loans company following its inability to meet new required minimum paid-up capital of GH¢ 400 million by 31st December 2018. The reclassification was to among other things enable the institution to downsize its operations and also inject additional capital to resolve the acute liquidity challenges it was confronted with. The Bank of Ghana subsequently appointed an Advisor to GN to assist in the reclassification process.

In spite of the above, the institution has been unable to resolve its liquidity crisis and has also not been able to meet the majority of the conditions the Bank of Ghana imposed on the institution following its reclassification as a savings and loans company. The financial condition of the institution has also deteriorated since the reclassification with both negative capital adequacy ratio and negative net worth.

The Bank of Ghana has reached the conclusion that GN is currently insolvent under section 123 (4) of the Banks and SDIs Act, 2016 (Act 930), being in breach of its key prudential regulatory requirements. Its Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) is currently -61%, in breach of the minimum required of 13%.

It is also facing a severe liquidity crisis with numerous complaints received by the Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Ghana from aggrieved customers who have been unable to access their deposits with the institution for the last several months. What is more, it has consistently failed to meet the minimum cash reserve requirement of 10% of its total deposits, since the end of the first quarter of 2019.

GN’s shareholders have failed to restore the bank to the required regulatory capital and liquidity levels in spite of long-standing promises that new capital was expected from foreign investors. While GN has indicated that government owes it a total amount of GH¢942.98 million of which GH¢102.73 million represented Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs), the Bank of Ghana’s assessment is that IPCs totaling GH¢30.33 million only have been confirmed by the Ministry of Finance as at 6th August 2019 as owed to contractors that may be indebted to affiliates of GN.

The Bank of Ghana’s supervisory assessment showed that even when the total outstanding IPCs amount of GH¢30.33 million was considered, it still did not address GN’s capital deficit of -GH¢683.66 million. It must be noted that GN’s insolvency problems are largely attributable to overdraft and other facilities it extended to its related parties who are other companies in the Groupe Ndoum network of businesses, under circumstances that violated relevant prudential norms.

Of particular interest are the funds totalling GH¢761.55 million that GN Bank as it then was, placed with its sister companies Ghana Growth Fund (Gold Coast Advisors) and Gold Coast Fund Management Limited (now Blackshield Capital Management), both licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Some of these funds were used by the two related parties to pay their customers whose investments with them had matured, while some were also used to fund road and other contractors, who claim to have worked on Government projects.

It is important to note that the IPCs claimed by GN are not supported by transactions that were entered into directly by GN and such contractors or Government and its entities. They reflect transactions entered into by Ghana Growth Fund or Gold Coast Fund Management with these contractors using funds taken from GN under circumstances that violated prudential norms. The failure of the two related parties to pay back these funds to GN affected GN’s capital position, leading eventually to its insolvency and acute liquidity challenges.

In addition to GN’s insolvency and liquidity challenges, the Bank of Ghana has found other key regulatory violations such as the following:

-The institution’s adjusted Net worth of negative GH¢30.70 million as at end May 2019 indicates that its paid up capital is impaired in violation of Section 28(1) Act 930.

-The institution’s adjusted capital adequacy ratio of negative 61.20% as at end May 2019 is in violation of Section 29(2) of Act 930.

-Contrary to section 64 (2) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930), the institution’s exposure to its related party has consistently been above the regulatory limit of 25% of net own funds (NOF). Exposures to other affiliates companies were mainly payments made by the bank on behalf of such affiliates.

-The structure of GN’s balance sheet clearly shows that the bank mobilizes deposits for its related companies. The inability of these related companies to honour their obligation to GN has resulted in serious liquidity challenges and contributed to their insolvency as all related party exposures are non-performing. The institution’s high non-performing loans (NPL) was mainly attributed to these related party exposures, which were never paid, thereby putting the deposits of its customer at risk.

-A recent Bank of Ghana investigation conducted at GN revealed that a significant amount (USD62,255,516.93, GBP718,528.59 and EUR4,200) of depositors’ funds held with GN had been transferred to International Business Solutions (another company owned by Groupe Nduom and which is based in the U.S.A) without any documentation to support such transfers in breach of section 19 of the Foreign Exchange Act 2006, Act 723, Section IV of Bank of Ghana Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2007/4, and subsequent Bank of Ghana Notices issued in August 2014 prohibiting such practices.

Dr Kwakye explains why Ghana’s economy needs an independent, competent fiscal council

Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, stressed the importance of establishing an independent fiscal advisory council in Ghana, free from government interference.

He defined a fiscal council (FC) as an independent body, typically established by governments to evaluate fiscal policy.

Dr. Kwakye emphasized that fiscal councils could significantly contribute to good fiscal policy if they are structured to guarantee their independence.

“This is very critical, and that’s why we are saying that the fiscal advisory council established by the president is not a true fiscal council because it is under the president and is not an independent body,” he told journalists at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

He added, “To be an effective agency of fiscal restraint, the FC should be able to exercise an independent watchdog role over the executive’s formulation and implementation of fiscal policy. FC independence is especially important for Ghana and other developing countries where institutional checks and balances over policy tend to be weak.”

However, Dr. Kwakye highlighted that while Parliament is tasked with overseeing proper fiscal policy, it is not particularly effective in fulfilling this responsibility. Consequently, he emphasized the necessity of another entity to aid in executing this mandate.

The IEA director proposed that the fiscal council (FC) should be appointed through a competitive recruitment process involving Parliament and the Public Services Commission.

He cited three countries from which Ghana can draw lessons, especially regarding effective functionalities. These countries include the US Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the UK Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), and the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council (FPC).

He outlined, “They engage mostly in economic and fiscal forecasting, evaluation of fiscal performance against targets, evaluation of fiscal risks, assessment of the consistency of fiscal policy with long-term fiscal and debt sustainability and sustainable growth, and publication of briefing materials to inform the public about their work.”

Church pastor from Winners Chapel in Nigeria receives life sentence for defiling minor

A pastor with Winners Chapel Church in Omuo-Ekiti, Enoch Gbinyiam, has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment on Thursday, June 13, 2024 by an Ado-Ekiti High Court for defiling a minor in his church.

Mr Gbinyiam was dragged before the court on a one-count charge levelled against him.

The State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Julius Ajiba, told the court that the pastor raped the daughter of a member of the church during her visit to the vicarage.

According to Ajiba, the victim usually visits the vicarage to assist the pastor’s wife with house chores, teach and help his young children in their school assignments.

He said the pastor sedated a bottle of fanta and offered her to drink. The minor took the Fanta and slept off, only to wake up and found out that she was bleeding profusely from her private part.

Aliba also told the court that the police was alerted and the pastor has been arrested as well as charged to court.

Meanwhile the offence contravened section 2 of the Gender Based Violence (Prohibition) Law, 2019.

The pastor, who spoke through his counsel, Adeyinka Opaleke, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. He called one witness and tendered an evidence in defence of himself.

Justice O.I.O Ogunyemi ruled that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and then convicted the defendant and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a Correctional Centre.
