Why my marriage crashed after one year – Yvonne Jegede reveals

Nollywood actress Yvonne Jegede revealed she left her marriage to Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole because she was contributing more financially than he was.

The couple married in February 2018 but separated shortly after the birth of their son in 2019.

In a podcast teaser, Yvonne expressed regret over choosing love instead of financial stability and mentioned that her ex-husband’s sensitivity to jokes due to their age difference also contributed to their divorce.

“He [my ex-husband] is eight years older than me. But the moment we got married, if I tell am say, ‘You dey crease, ‘ he would say I’m disrespecting him. I would if it was the same person I got married to.

“But that wasn’t the main reason I left the marriage. Let me just say the fact, I was bringing more of the money. I’m taking care of my son like nobody exist around me. It’s not easy. I would have gone for money instead of love.”

“When it was time to put his name, I said that as long as I carried all the burden, emotionally, financially and otherwise, I would put my surname with his surname.

“So I put a compound name, Jegede-Fawole. I told him I would remove Fawole if he didn’t accept that he was his child.

When he came and took a picture with the baby, the bloggers finally left me alone because he had accepted that it was his child,” she added.

Since that day, she said, Abounce has never returned to their house.

“He has never called. His son turned one; no call, no text message to say happy birthday. I’m not even asking him to contact me. We no dey the same path again, but your gift dey my hand.

“I even dropped a message for his family members because I dreaded this moment when my child would wake up one day and say where my daddy is. And we got to that stage. I was shaken,”

Despite the separation, she acknowledged his kind heart and noted that their issues weren’t severe enough to warrant a divorce but still led to one.

Abounce has had no contact with their son since their split.

I suffered stigmatization following a fake drug video implicating me – Hanks Anuku

Veteran Nollywood actor Hanks Anuku has shared a touching account of his struggles with abandonment and stigmatization following a misconstrued viral video. The video, which showed Anuku wandering the streets in tattered clothing, led many to mistakenly believe that the actor was experiencing a mental breakdown.

In a recent conversation, Anuku revealed that the footage, taken while he was preparing for a movie role where he portrayed a madman, caused significant damage to his life. False rumors about his mental state and alleged drug use spread rapidly, despite his efforts to clarify the situation.

Anuku criticized those who filmed him without understanding the context, accusing them of irresponsibly spreading false rumors that tarnished his reputation. He shared the devastating impact these rumors had on his personal life, explaining that his family, including his twin brother and wife, believed the damaging allegations of drug addiction, leaving him feeling isolated and hopeless.

Adding to his challenges, Anuku recounted how the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) stigmatized him, and how his colleagues in the film industry ceased communication with him and stopped offering him roles. Despite these obstacles, Anuku emphasized that his resilience and unshakable faith in God helped him endure this difficult period.

He is now gradually recovering, finding solace and slowly regaining his footing in both his personal and professional life. Reflecting on the incident, Anuku explained, “I was trying to get myself into character for a role that I was going to play; a madman, someone who isn’t in his correct senses or frame of mind. I had to go naturally and visited the environment to see how it’d play.”

Commenting on the viral video’s impact, he added, “The video circulating about me is not what it seems. The videos have really affected my life. I lost all my friends, lost all my film roles, and lost money. Nothing happened to me. I am perfectly alright.”

  • Diddy’s honorary degree revoked by Howard University

Diddy’s honorary degree revoked by Howard University

Howard University’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted on Friday to revoke the honorary degree awarded to Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2014, declaring he is “no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”

The university also announced it would return Combs’ $1 million donation and terminate a $1 million pledge agreement from the Sean Combs Foundation, according to a statement from the Board.

“Mr. Combs’ behavior, as captured in a recently released video, is fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs, rendering him unworthy of the institution’s highest honor,” the statement said.

The decision followed the release of a 2016 surveillance video by CNN showing Combs physically assaulting his former girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles.

The Washington, DC-based historically Black university also announced it would disband its scholarship program named after Combs.

“The University is unwavering in its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence,” the board added, linking to its “Interpersonal Violence Prevention” webpage in the statement.

Howard University’s announcement comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the former Bad Boy Records music mogul. Combs has faced eight lawsuits since November, when Ventura accused him in a now-settled claim of years of abuse during their relationship and of raping her in 2018, as previously reported by CNN.

Subsequent lawsuits have accused Combs of sexual misconduct and other illegal activities. While he has not responded to all the allegations, he has denied many of the claims from the civil suits.

The US Department of Homeland Security’s investigative arm has launched a federal probe into Combs, including allegations of sex trafficking. Investigators searched his Los Angeles and Miami homes on March 25 as part of the investigation. No federal criminal charges have been filed against Combs.

The surveillance video published by CNN may potentially serve as evidence in the federal investigation.

Investigators are preparing to bring Combs’ accusers before a federal grand jury in New York, sources familiar with the probe told CNN.

Additional allegations of money laundering and illegal drugs are also under federal investigation, CNN has learned.

Recently, Combs sold a majority stake in the media company and television network Revolt, which he founded in 2013, the company announced.

Poor turnout at dumsor vigil disappointing, Ghanaians must do better – Nana Romeo

Radio show host Nana Romeo has voiced his frustration over the lack of support for the #DumsorMustStop vigil organized by Yvonne Nelson and her team.

He criticized Ghanaians for their silence on the ongoing power outages, suggesting that loyalty to their preferred political parties has hindered their willingness to express discontent.

“We lack honesty in this country. It’s undeniable that power outages affect us all. Nine years ago, people protested against the government, and now, similar challenges have resurfaced. Yet, there’s a reluctance to support the vigil, and it’s disheartening. The poor attendance at Yvonne Nelson’s vigil reflects this hypocrisy,” Nana Romeo stated.

He continued, “This should have been a united effort to draw the government’s attention to the suffering of the people. However, the lack of turnout indicates a broader issue in our society. If we don’t hold our leaders accountable, we’ll continue to suffer.”

Yvonne Nelson led Ghanaians in a vigil on June 8, 2024, to highlight the country’s power crisis. However, unlike previous events she led, this vigil saw low attendance, reflecting a concerning apathy among the populace.

In an upcoming interview with Delay on TV3, Akwaboah spoke publicly about the issue for the first time. He explained that certain circumstances, beyond his control, influenced his decisions.

“In life, we set timelines and expect certain things to happen, but they don’t always go as planned. We still move on. As a man, I wasn’t happy about having children with two different women and then marrying another. But situations arose that I can’t fully explain now,” he told Delay.

When asked if his past relationships could have been maintained, Akwaboah admitted that a more peaceful environment might have led to different outcomes. “Perhaps, if those relationships had been more peaceful, I would have remained in them,” he said.

Regarding the question of breaking the virginity of two women and then marrying a virgin, Akwaboah clarified, “They were not virgins when I met them. As for my wife, I didn’t choose her because she was a virgin; I didn’t even know until I told her I wanted to be with her.”

2024 TGMA: I wish attention for AOTY wasn’t focused on me and King Promise only – Stonebwoy

Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy, who recently won the Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award at the 25th TGMA, has shared his thoughts on the debate between himself and King Promise that emerged prior to the event. In an interview with TV3, his first since winning the award, Stonebwoy mentioned that he was unaware of the social media debate until about a week before the event.

The nine-time Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year expressed a desire for the attention given to him and King Promise to have been distributed more evenly among all nominees in the category. He noted that focusing solely on two artists out of six created an impression that the other nominees had not made significant efforts during the year under review.

“One thing I felt was like I wish the attention would be spread out across all the nominees because it was not only a Stonebwoy and King Promise thing. I felt that if the attention was extended to the other five or six nominees, then it will now become a thing of fact. Limiting it to two artistes almost always takes away the fact that all nominees have worked and not just the two,” Stonebwoy said to Berla Mundi on Friday, June 7.

Stonebwoy believes that fans should not determine the top two contenders for the Artiste of the Year award. He explained, “The fans are only supposed to propel, propagate, project the works of the artiste under the year of review and then vote. That is what I think they determine.”

He emphasized that only the criteria of the Ghana Music Awards should determine the top two artists. According to him, the actions of fans can lead to “a little bit of resentment and unhealthy competition” between the artists.

At the recent Ghana Music Awards, Stonebwoy received 13 nominations and won six awards, including Reggae Dancehall Artiste and Artiste of the Year.

My ‘Artist of the Year’ win proves Baba Sadiq’s comments don’t hold water – Stonebwoy

Ghanaian musician Stonebwoy, winner of the Artiste of the Year (AOTY) award at the 25th TGMA, has responded to Baba Sadiq’s support for King Promise winning the same award.

Baba Sadiq, a notable figure in the entertainment industry, had publicly backed King Promise for the AOTY award prior to the event.

In his first official interview after winning the award, Stonebwoy dismissed Baba Sadiq’s opinion that King Promise deserved the AOTY award. He suggested that the results proved otherwise.

“I was not disappointed [about him choosing King Promise]. Eventually, I think the results have taught him that his opinion does not hold any weight in reality,” Stonebwoy said in an interview with Berla Mundi on TV3, on Friday, June 7.

Stonebwoy received 13 nominations at the recent Ghana Music Awards, taking home 6 awards, including Reggae Dancehall Artiste and Artiste of the Year.

Addressing the social media debate about the AOTY award between himself and King Promise, Stonebwoy mentioned he was unaware of the discussion until a week before the event.

The nine-time Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year expressed a desire for the same level of attention to be given to all nominees in the category, not just him and King Promise.

“I felt that the attention should be spread across all nominees because it was not just a Stonebwoy and King Promise thing. Limiting it to two artists undermines the efforts of the other nominees,” he stated to Berla Mundi.

Stonebwoy believes that fans should not determine the top two contenders for the Artiste of the Year.

Why I stopped using Facebook – Beverly Afaglo reveals

Actress Beverly Afaglo has shared her reasons for abandoning Facebook, revealing the overwhelming negativity and insults she encountered on the platform.

In an interview on Adom TV’s Okukuseku with Emelia Brobbey, Beverly recounted becoming the target of cyberbullying after a GoFundMe campaign was created to help her rebuild her life following a devastating house fire.

She described the harrowing night when she lost everything, explaining that the police had prevented her from entering the house to salvage any belongings for safety reasons.

“I could not sleep because I was traumatized,” she recalled, adding that the only items she had were the t-shirt and leggings she was wearing.

Despite the tragedy, she expressed relief that her children were safe and they spent the night at her sister’s house.

In the aftermath, fellow actress Yvonne Nelson suggested starting a GoFundMe campaign to help Beverly rebuild. Although she initially relied on her supportive family, Beverly realized that rebuilding would be difficult and agreed to Yvonne’s idea.

However, the campaign led to unexpected backlash, as Beverly received numerous insults and attacks, particularly on Facebook.

“People insulted me on Instagram and other apps, but Facebook was the worst. I didn’t know where the attacks were coming from because imagine I had lost everything and I was still being targeted,” she noted.

The negativity became so intense that she decided to stop using the platform entirely.

To preserve her peace of mind, Beverly has not returned to Facebook since the incident in August 2021.

Drug reaction possible cause of Mohbad’s death – Autopsy reports

An autopsy conducted on the late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, professionally known as MohBad, at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has provided insights into his potential cause of death.

The report, obtained by TheCable on Thursday, suggests a possible drug reaction, though the exact cause remains uncertain based on the limited post-mortem and toxicology findings.

Samples of MohBad’s gastric content, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney, and lung were collected for a thorough toxicology examination.

The results revealed the presence of diphenhydramine, an antihistamine used to treat allergies, stomach ailments, cold symptoms, and anxiety, in his system. However, the concentration detected was not considered fatal.

The anatomical and pathological examination noted an injury on MohBad’s right forearm, and his body was found to be moderately to severely decomposed upon exhumation. The report suggests the possibility of a fatal anaphylactic shock or drug reaction, despite inconclusive post-mortem and toxicology results. Anaphylactic shock is a severe allergic reaction with potentially life-threatening implications.

The report highlights, “The body neither had an autopsy nor was embalmed prior to interment on the second day. Following the Order for Exhumation, the body was exhumed on 21/09/2023, eight days after the burial.”

“Autopsy revealed moderate to marked decomposition of organs. Apart from the superficial injury on the right forearm, no significant gross finding could be attributed to death.”

“Samples were taken for toxicology to determine if there was any anaphylactic reaction, substances of abuse, overdosage, or common household poisoning. Toxicology revealed positive findings of Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine; however, this concentration was not in a fatal or lethal range. The other analytics were unremarkable.”

“In determining fatal anaphylactic shock, blood sample needs to be taken as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this was prevented or made impossible by the burial of the deceased on the second day. In light of the foregoing, the cause of death could not be ascertained. However, the possibility of a fatal anaphylactic shock (drug reaction) could be considered in view of the absence of any significant post-mortem and toxicology findings.”

MohBad passed away at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, under mysterious circumstances and was buried the following day.

Radio presenter Nana Romeo recently discussed King Promise’s loss in the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) 2024.

He highlighted that King Promise’s limited presence on traditional media platforms was a significant factor in diminishing his visibility and popularity, thus impacting his chances of winning the award.

During an episode of the E-Forum show with Abrantepa on GhanaWeb TV, Nana Romeo stressed the importance of artists engaging with traditional media to enhance their exposure and potential for accolades.

He pointed out King Promise’s lack of a new album release and fewer collaborations as additional factors contributing to his loss.

Nana Romeo contrasted this with Stonebwoy’s win, attributing it to his proactive engagement with the media, impactful performances, and collaborations throughout the year.

He emphasized that maintaining a strong presence in traditional media is essential for artists, citing Kofi Kinaata’s strategic use of interviews to boost his chances of winning awards.

While acknowledging King Promise’s talent, Nana Romeo highlighted the necessity for artists to actively participate in traditional media outlets to maximize their visibility and opportunities for recognition.

It’s rather unfortunate Gyakie failed to secure an award at TGMA’s – Ras Kuuku

At the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), reggae artiste Ras Kuuku expressed his surprise and disappointment over Gyakie’s omission from the Female Vocal Performance category, despite her notable achievements over the past year.

Speaking on the Daybreak Hitz show with DJ Slim on June 5, Ras Kuuku emphasized Gyakie’s significant contributions to the music industry, especially highlighting her collaboration with UK rapper JBEE.

He believed Gyakie deserved recognition for her outstanding vocal performance.

However, Gyakie was not among the nominees for the Female Vocal Performance award.

The category featured talented artists such as Niiella, Titi Owusu, Adina, Abiana, Lordina The Soprano, and Queendalyn Yurglee, who ultimately won the award.

The TGMA defines this award as recognizing the solo female artist who delivers the most outstanding vocal performance on a musical piece released within the year under consideration.

The event, held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, was a grand celebration of Ghanaian musical talent.

Stonebwoy emerged as the biggest winner of the night, taking home six awards, including the coveted Artiste of the Year. King Promise also had a successful evening, winning three awards, including Afropop Song of the Year and Most Popular Song of the Year.

Despite the competitive nature of the awards, Ras Kuuku’s comments highlight the subjective nature of musical recognition and the ongoing discussions about deserving artists and overlooked talents in the industry.

Rawlings’ soldiers lashed my 60-year-old father 24 times- Oboy Siki

Renowned Kumawood actor Oboy Siki recounted the ordeal faced by his father, Amana, during the tenure of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Amana, a teacher and owner of 12 vehicles, often overloaded his vehicles due to a good relationship with a local police officer.

However, when Rawlings took office, he implemented strict regulations against vehicle overloading.

Oboy Siki explained that his father’s refusal to comply with this new rule led to his arrest and punishment of 24 lashes for violating the regulation.

“My father, Amana, was both a teacher and a driver with 12 cars. He informed friendly police officers about his vehicle’s tendency to overload, which they initially ignored. However, Jerry Rawlings implemented a strict rule against overloading vehicles.

“My dad’s car, which had a capacity for 33 passengers, would sometimes carry 70. His continuous overloading eventually resulted in his arrest. At the police station, the commander decided that the punishment for his violation was 12 lashes, plus an additional lash for each extra passenger. As a result, he received 24 lashes. He was around 60 years old at the time. His popularity in the area made the incident quite surprising,” Oboy Siki shared in a video posted by Express GH TV on their YouTube channel.

Stupid economy! – Franklin Cudjoe reacts to cement price increment

IMANI Africa president Franklin Cudjoe has expressed concern over the escalating cost of materials, specifically highlighting the price of a bag of cement.

In a June 6 post on his X handle, he referred to recent reports indicating that a bag of cement had reached 108 Ghana cedis.

“A bag of cement is now GHS108! The economy is still stupid. Sad thing is the government has no clue about what to do,” he lamented, criticizing the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government for its perceived lack of direction amid these price increases.

Cudjoe also mentioned the rising cost of tomatoes in a related post.

The increase in cement prices has become a hot topic after manufacturers dismissed the trade minister’s advice against raising prices.

A recent GBC Ghana report detailed the price surge, noting that prices from dealers had seen a sharp increase from the previous week, causing confusion among buyers.

In May 2024, cement was priced between GH¢85 and GH¢90 depending on the brand and type, but as of June 4, 2024, prices had jumped to around GH¢110, according to dealers in Pokuase.

One dealer reported that Dzata cement (42R) is now GH¢108, Cimaf (42R) is GH¢107, with its 32R variant priced at GH¢87. Ghacem is leading the market with its 42R variant at GH¢110.

Further checks indicated that Diamond cement is sold at GH¢75 and GH¢85, while Dangote cement is priced between GH¢92 and GH¢94.

Less than a month ago, Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond called for the immediate reversal of the recent cement price hikes to alleviate pressure on Ghanaians. However, it seems his advice has been ignored, or the Minister may not have addressed the root causes of the price increases.

We focus on the mind not the body when we become men – Kidi tells women

Ghanaian musician Dennis Nana Dwamena, popularly known as Kidi, has highlighted a profound shift in perspective that occurs as men mature.

Kidi asserts that as men grow older, they move beyond superficial “specs” in women, focusing instead on the substance of their character and intellect.

He emphasizes that fixating solely on a woman’s appearance can be perilous, particularly when considering a lifelong partnership.

In a widely circulated video, he articulates, “As you mature, your preferences change. What truly matters is a woman’s heart and mind. While physical attractiveness is important, it pales in comparison to the depth of her character.”

Kidi underscores the significance of choosing a life partner based on qualities that endure beyond surface beauty. He cautions against prioritizing physical attributes over emotional and intellectual compatibility, stressing the importance of seeking a partner with whom one can envision a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

I’ll sue Charterhouse, DJ Black for the unauthorized use of my song “Fa No Fom” – DJ Azonto

Ghanaian musician DJ Azonto has announced plans to take legal action against DJ Black and Charterhouse for the unauthorized use of his song “Fa No Fom” during the recent Ghana Music Awards.

DJ Azonto claims that neither Charterhouse nor DJ Black sought his permission or credited him before playing his song at the awards gala.

He argues that this unauthorized use violates copyright laws and disrespects his intellectual property rights.

As a result, DJ Azonto feels compelled to seek legal redress to protect his interests and prevent such actions from occurring in the future.

In an interview, he revealed that his decision to sue Charterhouse was influenced by the fact that he was not invited to perform or participate on stage at the event.

This, he believes, deprived him of rightful publicity, recognition, and the opportunity to perform on one of Ghana’s biggest musical stages.

DJ Azonto emphasized the importance of respecting the hard work and creativity of artists and remains committed to upholding these principles.

Despite the controversy, he made a notable appearance on the red carpet, capturing attention with his striking nursing garb.

I narrowly escaped death enroute to see my children in Kumasi – Funny Face

Comedian Funny Face continues to face challenges with Vanessa, the mother of his children, who has been reluctant to allow him access to their daughters or even communicate with them via phone.

Vanessa and their three daughters, including twins, live in Kumasi, while Funny Face resides in Accra.

The conflict between them intensified in 2020 when Vanessa moved out of their shared home and relocated to Kumasi with the children.

Since then, Funny Face claims he hasn’t been able to see his children, leading to a series of public outbursts and incidents, some resulting in his arrest and treatment at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

Despite calls for him to visit his children in Kumasi, Funny Face has been hesitant, citing a traumatic event.
He recalls a near-fatal car accident on August 28, 2021, while traveling to Kumasi to see his children.
The accident occurred near Bonsuom junction, shortly after Linda Dor, leaving his car beyond repair and almost costing him his life.
Vanessa, he noted, denied knowledge of his planned visit, underscoring the communication issues between them.

To those suggesting he should make the trip by car or flight, Funny Face responded emphatically, recounting his harrowing experience.
“Shut up! Shut up! Was I not on my way to Kumasi with the Porsche Cayenne and I had a major serious accident that nearly ended my life? The car got damaged beyond repair. Vanessa was asked whether she was aware I was coming to Kumasi, and she denied it! 28 August 2021, I had a serious accident at Bonsuom junction, just after Linda Dor,” he stated.

In a message directed at Vanessa, Funny Face emphasized that his primary concern is seeing his children, not rekindling a relationship with her.

“Vanessa, I know you don’t love me and I don’t want love from you. You know it. It’s the children that matter. I just want to see my children,” he added.

  • Why Stonebwoy graced the TGMA stage with his back facing the crowd

Why Stonebwoy graced the TGMA stage with his back facing the crowd

When Stonebwoy took the stage at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) his deliberate entrance with his back to the audience transcended mere theatrics, embodying profound cultural significance rooted in Anlo heritage.

This striking stage act is steeped in historical resonance within the Anlo culture, harking back to a pivotal event in their history. Historically, when the Ewe people bravely escaped the oppressive rule of King Agorkorli in Notse, they walked backward to evade detection, ensuring their enemies couldn’t trace their footsteps.

This remarkable demonstration of resilience and liberation mirrors Stonebwoy’s own journey and triumphs, as he has overcome obstacles to claim his place in the music industry. In a symbolic nod to this ancestral tale, Stonebwoy’s backward walk onstage served to confuse his enemies, echoing the tactics employed by his forebears in their quest for freedom.

Before his performance, he was ceremoniously ushered onto the stage by an elder of the Ewe community, who bestowed traditional appellations upon him in the Ewe language. Though perhaps perplexing to some, these proverbs conveyed profound messages of honor and respect, emphasizing the importance of humility and wisdom.

The proverbs spoken during Stonebwoy’s performance carried deep wisdom: “It is the chicken that is always closer to the hen that enjoys the fattest part of their feast.” This signifies the importance of proximity to greatness and the rewards that come with it. The second proverb, “It is true that a child who knows how to wash his or her hands dines with elders,” underscores the value of wisdom and humility. It speaks to the notion that those who demonstrate maturity and respect are welcomed into esteemed circles, regardless of their age or status.

Accompanied by his anthem “Manodzi,” symbolizing reign and ascendancy, Stonebwoy’s stage setup featured a regal lion backdrop and the waving of the BHIM flag by a dancer, embodying strength and sovereignty.

Crafted by Elizabeth Efua Sutherland, the great-granddaughter of Efua Sutherland, Stonebwoy’s performance was hailed as one of the highlights of the night, captivating audiences with its cultural richness and artistic excellence.

Through his world-class performance, Stonebwoy not only entertained but also celebrated the enduring spirit and heritage of the Ewe people, leaving an indelible mark on all who witnessed his electrifying tribute.

  • Why this ‘indigenous twerk dance’ is termed ‘Borborbor’

Why this ‘indigenous twerk dance’ is termed ‘Borborbor’

A little bit of hip swaying, waist gyrating, and involuntary butt movements—that’s the essence of the ‘Borborbor’ dance, a captivating blend of rhythm and motion. Not a dance for those with stiff hips or ‘waist problems,’ Borborbor demands strong, flexible waists, stamina, and well-developed gluteal muscles. Essentially, those adept at Borborbor can effortlessly transition to twerking.

Originating from the Ewe communities in Ghana’s central and northern Volta Region, Borborbor has drawn comparisons to modern twerking. Once known as ‘Akpese,’ this dance was originally confined to the ‘Ewedome’ belt, including areas like Kpando, Hohoe, and Ho, before spreading to Ewe-speaking communities in Togo and Benin.

Why is it called the indigenous twerk dance? Similar to twerking, Borborbor involves rhythmic leg bending and straightening, accentuating the buttocks with each movement. The knees bend in time with the music, the hips sway, and the ‘booty’ wiggles effortlessly. Like twerking, the focus is primarily on the lower body, with minimal upper body involvement, allowing for sexually suggestive gestures. However, this sensuality sometimes clashes with Borborbor’s traditional contexts, especially since it is often performed to gospel music, even in church settings.

A Chief’s Stance Against the ‘Twerk-Like’ Borborbor Dance

Performing sexually suggestive moves at formal events contradicts the dance’s intended purpose, leading to disapproval. During a 2022 durbar at Anfoega Akukome, the Paramount Chief of Anfoega Traditional Area, Togbe Tepreh Hodo IV, halted what he deemed a profane Borborbor performance. His public reprimand underscored the community’s rejection of indecency in the dance, garnering widespread support from attendees.

Beyond the Controversy: Health Benefits of the Borborbor Dance

Despite occasional controversies, Borborbor is a conduit for cultural celebration and physical well-being. Engaging in this lively dance offers numerous health benefits:

Weight Loss: Borborbor can be an effective way to burn calories and lose weight, helping maintain a healthy weight and prevent obesity.

Cardiovascular Exercise: This high-energy dance provides a good cardiovascular workout, improving heart health and reducing the risk of heart disease.

Stress Relief: Dancing can be a fun and enjoyable way to relieve stress and improve mental health. Borborbor’s energetic and joyful nature makes it especially beneficial for stress relief.
Improved Balance and Coordination: The dance requires coordination and balance, which can improve over time with practice.

Socialization: Often performed in groups, Borborbor provides opportunities for socialization and connection, beneficial for mental well-being and overall happiness.

The Borborbor Sound and Its Origins

Accompanied by rhythmic drumming, vocal harmonies, and trumpet melodies, Borborbor originated in the village of Wusuta along Volta Lake in the 1940s. Francis Nuatro, a respected ex-police officer from Kpando, is credited with creating Borborbor by blending traditional ‘Konkoma’ rhythms with various musical genres. This innovation birthed a musical legacy characterized by castanets, rattles, and drums, evolving to incorporate rhymes and highlife elements. Today, Borborbor performances grace occasions such as funerals, festivals, weddings, and church ceremonies, uniting communities in celebration of their cultural heritage.

  • Fuel price hikes caused by adjustment in UPPF margin – COPEC

Fuel price hikes caused by adjustment in UPPF margin – COPEC

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) has expressed disappointment with the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for raising the Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF) margin.

This decision has resulted in a domino effect on fuel prices at gas stations, adding to the burden on the public.

The NPA issued a circular instructing industry players to raise the UPPF margin by GH₵0.05 per liter of fuel in the Price Build Up for petroleum products starting from June 1, 2024.

As a result, petrol and diesel prices climbed to GH₵14.84 per liter at some service stations on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, reacted to this development, stating that consumers are already struggling with high fuel prices due to currency depreciation.

He criticized the decision to increase the margin, emphasizing that it adds to the financial pressure on consumers when prices should ideally be reduced.

“These things simply continue to add onto the pressure that fuel prices continue to face in the country. It is quite unfortunate that we continue to add on at a time that we should be thinking of reducing prices for our people. Prices simply would end up going up because we have done an increase in some of the margins just a few days ago, not good enough”, he said.

Amoah also highlighted that global crude oil prices have significantly dropped recently, suggesting that fuel prices should have decreased accordingly.

He argued against passing on costs to consumers, mentioning that the UPPF margin has doubled from around 45 pesewas per liter to 90 pesewas per liter, eroding potential consumer benefits.

“Indeed fuel prices should have declined in the last window and this window. The cedi’s performance has been largely blamed for the prices still being where they are and very high. UPPF used to be around 45 pesewas a litre but unfortunately we’ve had to increase it and increase it. Currently we’ve also adjusted it to now 90 pesewas a litre”, he lamented.

Some oil marketing companies have already raised prices at the pumps, with Shell selling petrol and diesel at GH₵14.84 per liter.

GOIL, on the other hand, is selling petrol at GH₵14.60 (up from GH₵14.55) and diesel at GH₵14.75 (up from GH₵14.70), attributing the adjustment to the increased UPPF margin.

Without the margin increase, prices would have remained unchanged according to industry insiders.

Joynews’ market survey data reveals a stark reality as a sack of onions, once priced at GHC600, is now fetching GHC1,050.

The inflation rate is skyrocketing, pushing up the costs of essential goods and services.

For instance, a single tomato is now being sold at GHC5 each, causing concern among Ghanaians who are grappling with the depreciating value of the cedi.

Pepper prices have surged by over 200% in less than a year, with a paint container size now costing GH¢180 compared to an average of GH¢65 previously.

The supply shortage is a major factor driving these price hikes, leading to pepper sacks being priced above GH¢3,000, according to JoyNews’ market research data.

    I received a bad reception at 2024 TGMA’s – Olivetheboy

Ghanaian singer Olivetheboy has expressed his dissatisfaction with how artists and patrons were treated upon entering the venue for the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Speaking to Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo, he described the entry process as chaotic. “The entry was crowded as artists approached, and some of the people who were supposed to receive us were talking rudely,” the Bu Vision Music star lamented.

He emphasized that his experience was not unique, echoing the frustrations of “even the people who were coming to see the event.”

“They need to speak to us nicely,” he insisted. “That’s the only thing I didn’t like.”

The singer-songwriter also mentioned that his Best Afrobeats Song of the Year award for the megahit ‘Goodsin’ was taken backstage. “I don’t know when they’ll return it unless I ask,” he said. “They had us take pictures, and then they collected the plaque.”

He concluded by noting that this was his first-ever award in his music career.

Organized by Charterhouse, the Telecel Ghana Music Awards took place from Saturday, June 1, to Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Accra International Conference Centre’s (AICC) Grand Arena.

  • Until we prioritize our creative economy, we will continue to lag behind – Rex Omar

Until we prioritize our creative economy, we will continue to lag behind – Rex Omar

Veteran Ghanaian Highlife artist Rex Omar has passionately appealed for Ghana to strategically invest in its cultural and creative industries.

In a post on his Facebook page, Omar proposed that Ghana could greatly benefit from a platform similar to “Britain’s Got Talent” to showcase its own creative talents. He highlighted the immense potential of the nation’s youth, such as Afronitaaa and Abigail, emphasizing the need for intentional support to harness their potential.

“These and many more young talented individuals are the reasons why Ghana must be INTENTIONAL about investing in our cultural/creative industries. It’s one of our low-hanging fruits,” he stated.

Rex Omar further elaborated on why the duo did not secure the top spot in the 17th edition of “Britain’s Got Talent.” He noted that the show is designed to showcase and promote local British talent globally, and therefore, foreign acts do not receive as much prominence as British acts.

He stressed that until Ghana prioritizes its creative economy—including sectors such as music, fashion, film, design, and performing arts—the country will continue to lag behind in what he describes as “cultural warfare.”

“Please understand that the show is called ‘BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT!’ The platform was created to unearth and promote BRITISH talents to the globe, not Ghanaian talents! Until Ghana wakes up and pays attention to its CREATIVE ECONOMY, which encompasses music, fashion, film, design, publishing, architecture, crafts, visual arts, TV and radio, advertising, literature, computer games, and the performing arts, we’ll continue to lag behind. It is called cultural warfare; I rest my case,” he concluded.

Afronitaaa, whose real name is Danita Yeboah, and her protégé, seven-year-old Abigail Adjiri, successfully represented Ghana in the 17th season of the ITV competition, clinching 3rd place and making the country proud.

Although they didn’t win the top prize, their performances throughout the competition impressed the judges and earned Ghana global recognition. They were celebrated on the “Britain’s Got Talent” Instagram account, and their success has brought international attention to Ghanaian dance and culture. Abigail, a seven-year-old deaf dancer, had previously won Talented Kidz Season 14.

Social media has been abuzz with congratulatory messages for their significant accomplishments. Notable personalities, including those from Wesley Girls’ Senior High School, the University of Ghana, and former President John Dramani Mahama, have sent congratulatory messages to the duo.
