  • Gold exports in 2023 surge to $7.60bn, crude oil, cocoa, timber exports decline – BOG

Gold exports in 2023 surge to $7.60bn, crude oil, cocoa, timber exports decline – BOG

Gold exports reached $7.60 billion, marking a 15.0% increase compared to the previous year.

This growth is primarily attributed to a 9.2% rise in export volume and a 5.4% increase in the average realized price.

The surge in export volume was fueled by enhanced gold production, notably from the Newmont Ahafo Mine expansion, resumed operations at Anglogold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, and higher contributions from small-scale miners, as outlined in the 2024 Bank of Ghana Annual Report.

The average realized price for gold in 2023 stood at $1,843.13 per fine ounce.

On the other hand, crude oil exports experienced a significant decline of 39.3% in 2023, with earnings totaling $3.84 billion, down by 29.3% from the $5.43 billion recorded in 2022.

This drop in earnings was influenced by reduced prices and export volumes.

Export volumes decreased by 13.4% year-on-year to 46.9 million barrels, primarily due to decreased production from the Jubilee and TEN fields. The average realized price also fell by 18.4% to $81.78 per barrel.

Cocoa exports saw an 8.4% decline, with total earnings amounting to $2.12 billion in 2023, lower than the earnings in 2022. Cocoa beans exports specifically reached $1.31 billion by the end of December 2023, 1.1% lower than in 2022, mainly due to a 0.2% price drop and a 0.9% decrease in export volumes.

The average price and volume of exports for cocoa beans settled at $2,465.47 per tonne and 533,056.34 tonnes, respectively.

Meanwhile, cocoa products’ average price increased by 7.1% to $3,289.39 per tonne, but volume dropped by 23.8% to 240,896.35 tonnes, resulting in an 18.4% decrease in earnings to $792.40 million.

Timber export receipts declined by 11.7% to $142.55 million by the end of December 2023, mainly due to a 15.5% reduction in volume to 290,306.26 cubic meters.

Nonetheless, the average realized price per cubic meter of timber increased to $491.02 in 2023 from $469.99 in 2022.

Veteran Ghanaian actor Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, has addressed the current economic challenges, emphasizing that these issues are not unique to Ghana.

He pointed out that economic difficulties are prevalent worldwide, including in Europe, Asia, and the United States, where people struggle to make ends meet.

Agya Koo advised those who are unemployed and critical of the economy to seek jobs and accept the salaries they are offered.

In an interview with One Ghana TV, Agya Koo highlighted the need for Ghana to reduce its reliance on imports and focus more on local production.

“Economic comfort is a myth everywhere. In regions like Europe, Asia, and the USA, hardships are evident, with some individuals even lacking proper documentation for employment.

“Instead of excessive imports, we should focus on local production, especially during tough times. It’s important to work and earn an income rather than complain about wages,” he remarked when discussing Ghana’s economic hardships.

Agya Koo’s comments come amidst a wave of protests and online demonstrations by Ghanaians frustrated with the country’s declining economy.

‘Can this Gen Z’s take advise?’- Kanayo O. Kanayo reacts to ‘murder’ of Ghanaian lady, friend

Veteran Nigerian actor and lawyer Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, known as Kanayo O. Kanayo, has responded to the alleged murder of a Ghanaian woman and her Nigerian friend in Abia State, Nigeria.

The victims, Celine Chidinma Ndidum and Ghanaian Afibah Tandoh, were in Aba, the capital of Abia State, to meet with a business partner. They were last seen in April, with reports indicating they were killed by the man they went to visit.

Andrew Amaechi Ochekwo, the alleged kidnapper, was shot and killed by police after attempting to escape while being transported to Abuja.

In a social media video, Kanayo O. Kanayo expressed concern over how easily young people today form friendships and travel to meet people they connect with online.

“With a heavy heart, I address the sad news from Aba. Can you really advise the Gen Z generation on friendships?” he questioned. He highlighted the positive aspects of social media but stressed the dangers of online friendships, recalling a similar case of a woman named Cynthia who vanished after traveling from Abuja to Lagos to meet her boyfriend.

“Now we have Celine and Afibah from Ghana. This is tragic. I don’t know what they call runs or hookups,” he stated, emphasizing that economic struggles cannot justify risking one’s life.

Kanayo, offering his perspective as a father and elder, advised young women to consider the risks of traveling to meet strangers. “Hard work is essential. The truth is bitter, but it must be acknowledged. Young girls doing small businesses deserve appreciation.”

He also warned those who prey on others, stating, “The law will catch up with you.”

Mahama shouldn’t join any presidential debate, he needs no public validation – Bridget Otoo

Ghanaian broadcaster Bridget Otoo has advised National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama against taking part in any presidential debates.

She believes that Mahama’s established political status speaks for itself and does not require validation through debate participation.

Otoo pointed out that Mahama’s main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has a history of abstaining from such debates.

She argued that Mahama should not lower his status by engaging in debates with Bawumia as the election day approaches.

She expressed her opinion on social media, stating, “I hope John Mahama doesn’t join any debate! The driver didn’t want to debate JM but JM should descend into the lying den of the mate! No thank you.”

These comments came after Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, announced the upcoming 2024 Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) presidential debate, scheduled before the general elections.

Cudjoe mentioned that journalists Emefa Apawu and Evans Mensah would play crucial roles in the debate.

As the election draws closer, it remains uncertain whether Mahama will confirm his participation in the upcoming debate.

‘My manager and I are busy making money in Bolga, we’ve no beef’ – Shatta Wale

Dancehall star Shatta Wale recently took to social media to clear up rumors about a heated exchange with his manager during a performance in Bolgatanga.

A viral video captured Shatta Wale in a lively discussion with his manager after security at the Bolgatanga Stadium restricted fans’ access to the stage.

Feeling frustrated, Shatta Wale believed these security measures were putting a damper on the fans’ energy and enjoyment of the concert.

This incident sparked speculation online, with many assuming it was a clash between Shatta Wale and his manager, Sammy Flex.

However, Shatta Wale set the record straight in a Facebook post on June 3, finding amusement in the allegations.

He clarified that there was no conflict between them and even joked about it, saying, “My manager Sammy Flex is trending… They say we are fighting while we are in Bolga bathing with money… Ghana entertainment is filled with village drama on TV and radio.”

Kwasi Aboagye, MC Yaa Yeboah engage in a heated debate over McBrown’s ‘cooking show copycat comment’

Media personalities Kwasi Aboagye and MC Yaa Yeboah have found themselves in a heated debate sparked by earlier comments from Nana Ama McBrown about cooking shows in the country.

The disagreement originated from McBrown’s remarks during a phone interview with Medikal on Onua TV. She addressed what she saw as attempts to imitate the success of her cooking show, ‘McBrown Kitchen’.

McBrown acknowledged the competitive landscape but expressed her faith in divine blessings, saying, “While I support anyone trying to earn their livelihood, those truly blessed by God will always stand out.”

She hinted at others trying to copy her show but stressed that genuine blessings would ultimately prevail.

During a segment on Peace FM’s Entertainment Review show, MC Yeboah criticized McBrown for her comments about other cooking shows airing on different channels. She suggested that the ‘McBrown’s Kitchen’ host shouldn’t claim sole ownership of the genre or criticize others.

MC Yeboah highlighted the long-standing presence of cooking shows on Ghanaian television, citing examples like Gifty Anti’s ‘Asanka Delight’, and felt McBrown’s response during the interview with Medikal was unnecessary.

“Cooking shows have been around in Ghana for a long time. I remember Gifty Anti’s ‘Asanka Delight’ from way back. I think McBrown’s answer during the interview with Medikal was uncalled for because the question didn’t warrant such a response,” she stated.

Kwasi Aboagye, the show’s host, however, disagreed with MC Yeboah, supporting McBrown’s viewpoint.

He defended McBrown’s right to express her opinions, saying such debates were common among hosts and that MC Yeboah might have reacted similarly in McBrown’s position.

“There’s nothing wrong with it. As a host, these discussions are normal. Let’s not pretend otherwise; you might have responded even more strongly,” he argued.

My client was ‘bulldozed’ to the hospital despite his condition – LilWin’s attorney speaks

The attorney representing actor LilWin, Margaret Mary Twum has shared the strategy behind securing bail for her client during his ongoing legal proceedings related to a recent accident.

In the courtroom, Margaret advocated for bail based on LilWin’s health issues and the potential impact of extended detention on his well-being.

The prosecution did not contest the bail request but proposed a condition that LilWin report to the police weekly to aid in the investigation.

However, Judge Buaben Quansah dismissed this condition and instead granted bail at GH¢50,000, requiring two sureties. The next court appearance is set for four weeks later to allow for recovery.

In an interview with TV3, Margaret expressed frustration at LilWin being held by the police during his hospitalization.

“We were compelled to be here despite my client’s condition. However, his statement was taken, and the court acknowledged his health status, leading to the granting of bail,” she explained.

LilWin had been in police custody since June 3, 2024, after leaving Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

He has now been released on bail, with the case scheduled for June 27, 2024.

I was skeptical about settling with my husband, I thought he was a spy – Bridget Otoo

Broadcaster Bridget Otoo recently shared an interesting story from her early days with Dr. Evans Ago Tetteh, shedding light on her initial doubts and eventual change of heart.

During an episode of the KSM Show, Otoo reminisced about their introduction in 2018 through their mutual friend Fati. Initially hesitant, she quickly formed an opinion of Dr. Ago based on his WhatsApp profile picture.

“Fati mentioned that her friend was interested after seeing my photo on her WhatsApp status,” Otoo recalled.

Upon seeing Dr. Ago’s profile picture, Otoo hesitated, feeling uninterested. “His WhatsApp DP showed a muscular guy with a shoulder tattoo, clearly enjoying himself. My first thought was, ‘No, not my type.’”

Despite Dr. Ago’s messages over the years, Otoo kept her distance until they finally met in September 2020, partly due to their proximity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their first meeting changed Otoo’s perception significantly. “He was well-educated, articulate, and seemed to have it all,” she admitted, reflecting on her initial misjudgment.

After their meeting, Otoo, still cautious, had Dr. Ago investigated by a friend with connections to British intelligence.

Her inquiries went beyond his character, touching on his political ties, given her support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and concerns about political motives due to Dr. Ago’s connections to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Despite no negative findings from the investigation, Otoo remained wary about their relationship until she was fully convinced of Dr. Ago’s sincerity.

She clarified that her actions were driven by a desire to safeguard her image and personal interests. Their journey culminated in marriage in August 2022, marking a significant milestone in their lives.

Would you treat your child the same way you did the 3-year-old – Blakk Rasta fires LilWin

Media figure Blakk Rasta criticized Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as LilWin, for attending a film premiere after a tragic accident that claimed the life of 3-year-old Tawiah Ampomah and left others seriously injured.

Blakk Rasta expressed disappointment in LilWin’s priorities, suggesting he should have prioritized the situation over the movie premiere.

Blakk Rasta condemned LilWin’s actions, alleging that LilWin showed little concern for the child’s death and failed to handle the situation with the gravity it deserved.

He questioned LilWin’s decision to attend a church service afterward, seemingly indifferent to the tragedy.

Blakk Rasta emphasized that LilWin would have likely acted differently if the victim had been his own child, implying a lack of empathy and responsibility on LilWin’s part.

“LilWin departed from the hospital and proceeded to his film premiere. Did he ascertain whether the boy was alive or not? According to the report, just a few hours after reaching the hospital, the boy passed away. Had it been LilWin’s child, I believe he would have postponed the premiere, or at the very least, he wouldn’t have attended.

“He showed no concern for the three-year-old. Subsequently, he attended church to give thanks for his own life. What about the boy’s life? Was he aware that the boy had passed when he went to church? Indeed, he was. Had it been LilWin’s child, would he have acted so carelessly and indifferent? I am disappointed,” he fumed.

LilWin was detained on June 3, 2024, after his release from the hospital and later granted bail, with a court hearing scheduled for June 27, 2024.

If found guilty, Lil Win could face 5 years in prison – Martin Kpebu on accident case

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has provided an in-depth analysis of the charges brought against actor LilWin by the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

The police have charged the Kumawood actor with dangerous driving and negligently causing harm in an accident that resulted in the tragic death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

Kpebu explained that if found guilty, LilWin could face imprisonment or a fine. He noted that, based on past cases, it is more common for offenders to receive fines rather than prison sentences.

“In terms of penalties, imprisonment is possible, but fines are typically imposed. However, in particularly severe cases, imprisonment can occur, and it can be up to five years,” Kpebu stated during an interview with Joy FM.

The lawyer suggested that, considering the loss of life, jail terms should be seriously considered as a punishment for road accidents.

“We don’t often charge them with manslaughter. So, is it reckless, dangerous driving, etc.? Yes. Over the past decade, more than 2000 people have died annually in road accidents. Yet, we don’t see drivers being imprisoned for years.”

LilWin was taken into police custody on Monday, June 3, 2024, following his discharge from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He has since been granted bail worth GH¢50,000, with the case adjourned to June 27, 2024.

500,000 businesses to be delisted for non-compliance – Registrar of Companies

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) plans to delist over 500,000 public and private businesses by the end of June 2024 due to non-compliance with filing requirements.

This delisting will affect more than 8,000 companies limited by shares and over 500,000 business names that have failed to file their annual returns, necessary to maintain good standing.

Despite receiving numerous notices and reminders through various awareness programs and publications over the past two years, these businesses have not complied.

Initially, the ORC set a deadline for the end of 2023, but it was extended to provide additional time for public education and compliance.

According to a press release by the Registrar of Companies, Jemima Mamaa Oware, in Accra on June 3, 2024, companies struck off the register will be prohibited from conducting business under their company name for twelve years, as stipulated by Section 289 (5) of the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992).

Business names will lose their exclusive rights and become part of the public domain upon deregistration, in line with Section 59(A) of the Registration of Business Names 1962 (Act 151).

The release also noted that a company’s name can only be restored to the register following a court order, provided there is sufficient cause for such action, as outlined in Section 289 (7) of the Companies Act 992.

The ORC has stressed the importance of filing annual returns to ensure compliance and transparency within the business community. Failure to comply jeopardizes the legal standing of entities and undermines public trust.

Defaulting companies and businesses are urged to file their Annual Returns and Renewals as directed by the Registrar of Companies before the validation process concludes on June 30, 2024.

The ORC encourages all stakeholders to comply in order to maintain the integrity of the business environment and foster trust among investors, consumers, and the public.

Defaulting companies should visit the ORC’s website to check the list of entities slated for removal from the register.

CODEO calls on Peace Council to intervene in voter transfer dispute

The National Coordinator of the Coalition for Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Albert Arhin, has called on the National Peace Council to intervene in the disputes surrounding the transfer of votes, particularly the tension between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Electoral Commission (EC).

Arhin expressed concerns that if the issue is not resolved, it could hinder the smooth transfer of votes.

“It has never happened in any transfer of votes that you send people there as observers, that is the first time and look at what has happened my personal view is that the way this thing is going either the peace council can come in and talk to both parties so that peace can prevail if we forget about it and let this continue we are not going to have a smooth transfer of votes.”

His comments follow the NDC’s refusal to withdraw its agents from EC offices during the ongoing voter transfer exercise, despite the EC’s directive to do so.

During an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Monday, the NDC maintained its stance, instructing its agents to disregard the EC’s directive.

The NDC also alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was moving voters from different constituencies to increase their votes in certain areas.

Speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 on June 3, Arhin said that the EC’s decision to allow party agents to monitor the process was unprecedented and that the EC’s assurances of transparency were not backed by law.

He emphasized that the EC’s magnanimity in granting this wish was surprising, given that it was not supported by any legal framework.

“As for the assurance, they [EC] said it again and again. They gave assurance that there’s nothing untoward they would do and that they are going to be as transparent as ever. They even emphasized the fact that this is not even in the law they have allowed them to go and it shows the extent to which they can be magnanimous in granting this wish.

“I was surprised when I got there because it has never happened in any transfer of votes that you send people there as observers…it’s the first time and look at what has happened.

  • We don’t celebrate our icons enough, only celebrating ‘foolish people’ – Fritz Baffour

We don’t celebrate our icons enough, only celebrating ‘foolish people’ – Fritz Baffour

Renowned Ghanaian actor, journalist, and former Information Minister Fritz Baffour has stated that Ghanaians tend to focus on celebrating unaccomplished individuals rather than those who have made significant contributions to the country’s culture and heritage.

In an interview with Citi TV at a press event held on May 31, ahead of the James Barnor 95 Festival on June 6, Fritz Baffour expressed his disappointment that Ghanaians do not adequately recognize and celebrate their icons.

He believes that the nation’s focus on politics and material possessions often overshadows the achievements of individuals who have highlighted Ghana’s culture to the world.

“Ghanaians we have not celebrated our icons enough. We turn out to be more concerned about politics and other mundane matters than celebrating the good that we have…This is a great country…When you talk about Ghana you talk about the people…we talk about what we have, culture, our traditions that is Ghana, so when we have people who are highlighting that very powerful part of us, we have to celebrate them”.

“But we don’t…we celebrate fools, foolish people…people who have not achieved anything, we celebrate people who are like fireflies. Instead, people who shine the light all their lives like this man who is 95 years old and is still talking and encouraging people to do the right are not celebrated”.

Baffour emphasized that Ghanaians should celebrate those who have made significant contributions to the country’s cultural heritage, such as James Barnor, a Ghanaian photographer who was the first to collaborate with The Daily Graphic.

Barnor will be honored at the James Barnor 95 Festival in Accra on June 6, which aims to celebrate cultural heritage and artistic innovation.

The former member of Parliament for Ablekuma South also advised that Ghanaians need a sense of direction to be proud of their identity and to learn to tolerate and work together.

He attributed the country’s divisions to politics and emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating those who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s culture and heritage.

“There is so much separation in the country and I blame Politics for that…we must learn to tolerate each other and learn to work with each other”.

Born in Ghana in 1929, James Barnor opened his renowned Ever Young studio in Accra, where he captured the nation’s moment of independence.

The James Barnor 95 Festival is a celebration of his life and work, as well as a tribute to his enduring legacy in Ghanaian arts and culture.
