‘Empty tape had nothing against the AG, doctored, spiced’- Akosua Manu on ambulance case

New Patriotic Party‘s(NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Adentan constituency, Akosua Manu voiced her criticism of a leaked tape from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) implicating the Attorney General in the ongoing ambulance purchase trial.

She compared the hype surrounding the tape to that of a new Ghallywood movie.

However, she found the tape lacking in concrete evidence against Godfred Yeboah Dame, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice.

“They hyped the tape with so much noise on countdown and there was no peace in Ghana’s last couple of days. But I didn’t hear Dame’s voice because it wasn’t audible enough. Later there was another file circulating on social media and there was nothing to show the AG did anything wrong.

“Whether they like it or not but the tape was doctored. It was spliced and they can’t deny it,” she stated in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM.

Manu stated in an interview with Peace FM that despite the initial uproar and its impact on Ghana’s peace, the tape failed to provide substantial proof against Dame.

She also raised doubts about its authenticity, suggesting it may have been altered and edited.

The NDC released the audio recording to support allegations of unethical conduct by the Attorney General in the prosecution of Richard Jakpa and two others in the Ambulance procurement case. Nevertheless, the NPP dismissed the tape as fabricated and manipulated by the NDC.

British ambassador to Mexico Jon Benjamin sacked after flaunting gun on embassy staff

The British Ambassador to Mexico was quietly dismissed from his position earlier this year after an incident where he aimed an assault rifle at a local embassy employee, which became public after footage of the incident circulated on social media.

According to the Financial Times, Jon Benjamin was on an official trip to Durango and Sinaloa, known for their strong organized crime presence, when he aimed the rifle at a colleague.

The colleague appeared uncomfortable in the five-second clip.

The firearm likely belonged to the security detail accompanying the diplomat, who was fired shortly after the incident in April.

The video was uploaded by an anonymous account on X, previously known as Twitter, with the account criticizing Benjamin for making light of the situation in a country where drug-related killings are a daily occurrence.

Mexico has experienced over 30,000 homicides annually for the past six years, ranking among the highest homicide rates in Latin America, as organized crime factions battle for control of territory and businesses nationwide.

Benjamin’s ambassador status has been removed from the UK government website. He assumed the role of UK ambassador to Mexico in 2021, after serving in various diplomatic positions across several countries over nearly four decades.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the Guardian but informed the Financial Times that they took appropriate action in response to the incident, utilizing their robust HR processes to address internal issues.

Historically, diplomatic relations between the UK and Mexico, the second-largest economy in Latin America, have been amicable and non-controversial. The two countries have been negotiating a new free trade agreement since 2022.

This upcoming Sunday, Mexican voters are expected to elect Claudia Sheinbaum as their first female president, succeeding her popular predecessor from the same party, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The election campaign has been marred by violence, with over 30 candidates killed and many more withdrawing as organized crime groups attempt to install friendly leaders. On the campaign’s final day, a gunman filmed himself shooting and killing opposition mayoral candidate José Alfredo Cabrera in Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, before being gunned down by bodyguards.

Richard Jakpa’s motion to strike out charges against him is an extension of public theatrics – AG

The Attorney General‘s (AG) office has characterized Richard Jakpa‘s attempt to dismiss charges against him as an additional act of public drama used by the third accused to undermine the prosecution against him.

This stance is outlined in the Attorney General’s affidavit opposing the motion.

Jakpa filed the motion on the basis that the Attorney General had misused his authority in pursuing the case against him.

This connects to Jakpa’s assertions that Godfred Yeboah Dame compelled him to testify against the minority leader, ATO FORSON, the primary accused in this matter, during odd hours.

According to Citi News, the Attorney General’s office refutes all accusations against Godfred Dame in the affidavit.

The Attorney General contends that the prosecution is founded on substantial evidence discovered through thorough investigations.

The office argues that the claims in support of the motion are filled with false allegations designed to create unnecessary doubt about the court’s ability to deliver justice in this case.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s office views this motion as part of the accused individuals’ efforts to discredit the prosecution and sow doubt about the court’s integrity.

Despite facing consistent insults and attacks on his integrity, the Attorney General’s office emphasizes its commitment to maintaining professionalism throughout the proceedings.

Adentan-Dodowa Road to be completed by November – Asenso Boakye

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has announced that the long-delayed Adentan-Dodowa Road Project is expected to be completed by November.

During a visit to the site on Thursday, May 30, the Minister acknowledged the difficulties faced by residents and motorists due to the poor condition of the road.

However, he expressed confidence in the new contractor, who has made significant progress since beginning work seven weeks ago.

“They started seven weeks ago and already they’ve done seven kilometres, doing massive excavation works and drainage facilities and I’m very encouraged by the work that they’ve done and I’m very confident that they’ll be able to stick within the schedule and by November, the Motorist will start experiencing the benefits.”

The Minister explained that delays were due to issues with the previous contractor and new developments along the corridor.

He assured that the necessary steps were being taken to ensure the new contractor could start work as soon as possible.

“So we had issues with the contracts and since I’ve been here, I’ve had discussions with my officials and we are going to terminate that contract, we’ll repackage it and the project and give it to our new contractor. But I can assure you that we are going to go through the necessary process to ensure that contractors come to the site as soon as possible.”

Residents, who have been suffering due to the poor state of the road, expressed relief at the Minister’s visit and the announcement of a new contractor.

“The place is very bad, you know some of us use the smaller vehicle and we are suffering. You have to be changing car parts almost every time at a very high price. So it’s very difficult.

“It’s something we’ve been talking about over and over again at the assembly that the government should come to our aid and so we are happy that the Minister himself is here to ascertain the danger of the road so I think we are okay now.”

One resident stated, “The situation is very bad. Many of us with smaller vehicles face frequent and costly repairs. We have repeatedly asked the assembly for help, so we’re happy the Minister is here to see the danger firsthand. We feel reassured now.”

  • “Sorry, I have been advised against granting interviews” – Ama Governor after Call to the Bar

“Sorry, I have been advised against granting interviews” – Ama Governor after Call to the Bar

Twice denied the opportunity to be called to the Bar despite passing her legal education exams in 2022 and 2023, Elorm Ababio, popularly known as Ama Governor, has finally been admitted in 2024.

The controversial Ghanaian YouTuber exuded confidence as she walked majestically on stage to take the bow when her name was called.

The spontaneous applause from the audience suggested that Ama Governor was the most popular among the new lawyers.

After the General Legal Council’s gathering adjourned indefinitely, EIB Network’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, approached the newly inducted lawyer for an interview. Smiling, she declined, saying, “I have been advised against granting interviews.”

Despite a request for a one-word description of the moment, Ama Governor remained firm in her decision. With her new lawyer’s wig on her head and her spectacles nearly slipping to the tip of her nose, she walked with confidence and focus.

On May 31, 2024, Elorm Ababio’s dream came true as she became a lawyer.

Her name is now firmly documented in the noble profession, but as the Chief Justice reminded them, the real work of a lawyer has only just begun.

The day was special not only for Ama Governor but also for the other 181 lawyers called to the Bar. The euphoria and energy during their photo sessions were palpable.

Ama Governor now looks forward to her first client, ready to apply her competence and expertise.

    The Controversy
In November 2022, the General Legal Council set up a committee to investigate Ama Governor following a misconduct complaint. After considering the committee’s report, the Council allowed her to apply to be called to the Bar in October/November 2023, monitoring her activities in the interim.

However, on October 20, 2023, the Council declined her application after reviewing her public conduct, a decision finalized in a meeting on October 17, 2023.

    Court of Public Opinion
The decision sparked an outcry, particularly on social media. Legal professionals, including human rights lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu, expressed shock at the General Legal Council’s decision. The situation ignited discussions among legal experts and the public about the criteria for eligibility to be called to the Bar.

  • Debt transparency significant for IMF’s core mandate

Debt transparency significant for IMF’s core mandate

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has emphasized that debt transparency is not only beneficial for individual countries but also crucial for the IMF’s operations.

The IMF noted that hidden and opaque debt forms hinder its ability to fulfill its core mandate.

For instance, collateralized loans, complex financing methods, and confidentiality agreements complicate the IMF’s efforts to accurately assess a country’s debt and aid in economic recovery.

In a publication titled “Hidden Debt Hurts Economies, Better Disclosure Laws Can Help Ease the Pain,” the IMF highlighted its efforts to promote debt transparency through technical assistance and program engagements. The publication stated, “Well-designed laws make it harder to hide debt. However, there are insufficient such laws, despite their proven benefits.

To achieve critical transparency, countries and their international partners must advocate for reforms to enhance domestic legal frameworks, benefiting borrowers, legitimate creditors, and the broader system.

Uncovering hidden debts has never been more important.”

The IMF also pointed out that ineffective oversight by legislatures and supreme audit institutions (national government audit bodies), which are vital for accountability, can impede public debt disclosure.

The Fund urged legislative bodies to monitor and scrutinize public debt on behalf of the people and to have staff capable of understanding highly technical reports.

Many legislatures employ committee systems, such as budget and public accounts committees, to allow for specialization among legislators.

In the United States, for example, the Treasury Secretary must send the annual public debt report to the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees, rather than to Congress as a whole.

The IMF also recommended that laws grant supreme audit institutions the authority and necessary powers to monitor and audit government debt and debt operations.

Prosecution of Ato Forson a vicious scheme by NPP- Gyampo

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has characterized the prosecution of Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson in the ongoing ambulance case as a vicious scheme.

Prof. Gyampo warned that such actions by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) “should be worrying to all well-meaning Ghanaians who cherish our cohesion and peace.”

Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ambulance case, claimed in his witness statement that Attorney General Godfred Dame once confided in him that he was under pressure from President Akufo-Addo and former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta to prosecute Ato Forson.

In a Facebook post, Prof. Gyampo stated that if Jakpa’s allegations are proven true, the NPP would be the “worst offenders in decimating public confidence in our court and judicial processes.”

He elaborated, “The vicious scheme to jail Ato Forson at all costs by the NPP, as revealed by Richard Jakpa’s recent court application, should alarm all well-meaning Ghanaians who value our cohesion and peace. According to Jakpa’s testimony, the Attorney-General admitted that his involvement in the prosecution was to obscure the real motives behind the trial, driven by pressure from the President and Ken Ofori-Atta. Jakpa is requesting the court to allow him to testify and be cross-examined on these issues.

“If someone genuinely deserves punishment, so be it. But if Jakpa can substantiate his claims with evidence, the NPP would indeed be the worst offenders in eroding public confidence in our judicial system.”

Prof. Gyampo expressed his disappointment, noting, “It is disheartening that such actions are occurring under a regime we expected to know better.”

Bawumia advocates for reintroduction of road tolls

Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has advocated for a broadened road toll system to fund the development of Ghana’s road infrastructure.

Ghana eliminated road tolls in 2022 to alleviate traffic congestion on major roads. However, during his tour of the Volta Region, Dr. Bawumia proposed reintroducing a comprehensive tolling system to generate necessary revenue for infrastructure development.

In a meeting with the clergy in the Volta Region at the start of his tour, Dr. Bawumia addressed citizen concerns regarding poor road conditions. He acknowledged the Government’s funding shortfall for infrastructure projects and emphasized that innovative solutions like road tolls could bridge the gap.

Dr. Bawumia suggested that the Government’s approach to road funding needs reevaluation, advocating for private sector involvement to supplement toll revenue and provide needed infrastructure.

“Let’s reintroduce a broad-based road toll system,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “The tolling system must return, and I believe it will. It is a fundamental error for the Government to rely solely on the budget for road projects. The Government lacks sufficient funds, and the private sector must be involved.”

He proposed a lease payment option from the private sector to support infrastructure development, similar to their role in advancing the nation’s digital agenda.

Dr. Bawumia also shared his vision for Ghana if elected president, including expanding agriculture, ensuring power sufficiency, and reforming the tax regime. He highlighted the importance of formally recognizing the church’s role in national development and assured it of the necessary support.

Rev. Seth Mawutor, Chairman of the Christian Council in the Volta Region, emphasized the need to maintain national peace during the election period and pledged the Council’s ongoing support.

Accompanying Dr. Bawumia were NPP leaders, including Mr. Stephen Ntim, National Chairman of the NPP, and Mr. Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

During his tour, Dr. Bawumia also met with members of the Muslim community and the Volta Region House of Chiefs, and he plans to engage with the youth at a forum at Ho Technical University before continuing to the Oti Region on Friday.

I would prioritize stabilizing the economy and restoring a stable currency if voted back – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that if re-elected as president, his primary focus would be on stabilizing the economy and restoring a strong currency.

He pledged to implement an urgent economic recovery plan and fiscal consolidation strategy, starting with a national economic dialogue within the first hundred days of his tenure.

Addressing the 8th CEOs Summit in Accra on May 27, 2024, Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reiterated, “Our top priority will be stabilizing the economy and bolstering the currency. We will swiftly implement an economic recovery and fiscal consolidation plan after conducting a national economic dialogue within a hundred days of taking office.”

Mahama also expressed concern over the persistent challenges facing the Ghanaian Cedi, criticizing the government’s inaction in mitigating the currency’s rapid depreciation against major trading currencies, notably the Dollar.

He highlighted grim economic indicators such as a spike in unemployment to 14.7% from 8.5% in 2017, record-high inflation surpassing 25%, and soaring interest rates ranging from 30% to 50%.

Additionally, he pointed out the significant devaluation of the Cedi, which has exceeded 15 Ghana Cedis to the US dollar.

Despite these challenges, Mahama accused the government of neglecting critical measures to cut expenditures, opting instead to prioritize comfort spending over transformative infrastructure investments essential for national progress.

The 8th CEO Summit, themed “Reigniting Business and Economic Growth: Charting A Path Forward; Economic Diversification and Artificial Intelligence Transformation. A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue and High Impact Learning,” provided a platform for discussions on revitalizing the economy and leveraging technology for growth.

Tax exemptions during Mahama’s tenure unconstitutional, illegal, and immoral – Majority Leader

The parliament’s majority has raised doubts about the reasons behind the opposition from the minority regarding tax waiver requests for 42 companies under the 1D1F policy.

These waivers, totaling $350 million, have been pending in parliament for years due to strong opposition from the NDC minority.

The NDC MPs, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, argue that granting such exemptions is not feasible given the country’s economic crisis, which has led the government to seek IMF assistance.

However, during a media address in parliament, majority leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin pointed out exemptions granted during the Mahama administration, when Dr. Forson served as deputy finance minister.

The Effutu MP highlighted the over $800 million waiver given to Meridian Port Services (MPS) in 2016 by the Mahama-led administration, citing numerous other waivers granted by former President Mahama without parliamentary approval.

He criticized what he called the “outrageous tax giveaway,” emphasizing that for every $1 invested by MPS, the government gave them 55 cents in tax waivers.

Specifically, MPS was exempted from corporate income tax for ten years, with reduced corporate tax of 15% for an additional five years after that.

They were also exempt from taxes on dividends to shareholders for 20 years, along with concessions on Value Added Taxes, NHIL, customs duties, and withholding taxes.

The majority leader further mentioned beneficiaries of unconstitutional tax waivers, including Dzata Cement, and criticized the designation of some companies as strategic investors by GIPC, leading to tax waivers without parliamentary approval, which he deemed unconstitutional, illegal, and unethical.

President Mahama singlehandedly sat in his office and approved tax waivers in 2015 for the so-called strategic investors. Conspicuous on the list of beneficiaries were:

Haruna Iddrisu, others should be in jail by now if gov’t wanted to prosecute NDC MP’s – Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin has refuted claims and suggestions that the Akufo-Addo administration is targeting Minority Leader Cassiel Ato-Forson for his criticisms against the government.

During an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse show on Friday, May 31, 2024, the Effutu legislator debunked allegations that the Minority Leader is being persecuted due to his consistent criticisms of the government, stating that such claims are entirely unfounded.

“It is unfounded to suggest that individuals are being prosecuted solely because of their criticism of the government.

Haruna Iddrisu was highly critical of the government, yet he was not subjected to government prosecution regarding the double salary issue,” he clarified.

“If the government intended to prosecute opposition MPs for criticizing them, then figures like Haruna Iddrisu, Armah Kofi Buah, Mahama Ayariga, and others would have faced legal action over the double salary issue,” he added.

The Majority Leader highlighted that the double salary issue was a straightforward matter that could have led to the imprisonment of many NDC MPs, but President Akufo-Addo chose to resolve it by having them reimburse the funds instead of facing trial.

He explained that the President opted not to send a significant number of political figures to court for fear of tarnishing Parliament’s image and causing public discontent towards the political class.

Therefore, the decision was made to allow MPs who received double salaries to repay them.

He urged Ghanaians to dismiss claims that individuals are being prosecuted over ambulance matters due to their consistent criticisms of the Akufo-Addo administration.

Reports indicated that approximately 48 Members of Parliament who served as ministers under the previous NDC administration were alleged to have received double salaries.

This led to an investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, citing their actions as contrary to Section 124 (1) of the Criminal and Other Offence Act 1960 (Act 29) as amended in 2012, Act 849, which pertains to the offense of stealing.

Some of the NDC MPs named in the double salary issue included Alban Bagbin, Haruna Iddrisu, E.T. Mensah, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah, Eric Opoku, Inusah Fuseini, Mahama Ayariga, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, Alhassan Azong, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, among others.

Why I stayed single for 12 years after divorcing my wife – Segun Arinze

Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze has shared why he remained single for 12 years following the end of his first marriage.

The 58-year-old actor first married actress Anne Njemanze in 1996, but their union ended in 1997.

After a 12-year hiatus from matrimony, Arinze married Julie in 2008, and the couple now has three children together.

Speaking on the WithChude podcast, Segun Arinze explained that he was unsure about finding the right person after his divorce from Njemanze.

The filmmaker recounted being involved in numerous relationships until 2007 when he “cried to God” for a wife. He initially avoided discussing his failed marriage because “people do not share everything.”

“I stayed out of marriage after the first one collapsed. I stayed out of marriage for about 12 years before I remarried in 2008. It wasn’t that I gave up on marriage; I was just really confused about finding the right person,” he said.

“I got into many crazy relationships. I’ve seen it all—good, crazy, and bad. In 2007, I cried to God and said, ‘Father Lord, I have had enough. Can you just give me a wife?’ I remember crying out for help.

“Then, at a wedding, I saw this beautiful woman. I asked my PA to get her number, but he was too scared. Julius Agwu and I were the MCs at the event, which was Don Chi’s wedding. Julius Agwu announced, ‘My brother is looking for a wife.’ I approached her, got her contact information, and invited her to dinner. That’s how it all started. The rest is history.

“We’ve been married for sixteen years now and have three lovely kids. She is a lawyer and also my legal adviser.

“When my first marriage ended in 1997, I kept quiet and said nothing. I let it go. To this day, I haven’t spoken about it and don’t want to. I don’t want to discuss it. It happened. Difficulties will always arise. Everyone has a closet.”

Socialite Efia Odo has shared her view that filling a stadium shouldn’t be the sole criterion for determining the Artiste of the Year.

As discussions heat up on social media about who will win the coveted title at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards, music enthusiasts are divided.

While all the nominees are highly deserving, online attention focuses on King Promise and Stonebwoy, who have gained international recognition with their music.

She uses the example of Fancy Gadam, who has filled the Tamale Sports Stadium numerous times without winning the title.

In a tweet, she stated, “I think it’s cuz Shatta and Sark have won it twice so that means he too wants it twice (I’ve not mentioned names). The old man should just leave it for the kids cuz it’s evident that numbers don’t lie. If you like let’s compare King Promise’s numbers to others. Simon Cowell concluded with a prophetic note, stating, “I think what is happening behind me (the excitement from the audience), is more important than what I say. When you got it, you got it. I had a feeling last night about who’s gonna win this show this year.”

12,000 challenged cases during voter registration exercise being probed by EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has launched inquiries into approximately 12,000 challenge cases logged during the recently concluded limited voter registration drive.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, stated that the committee’s task is to determine the eligibility of these individuals for inclusion on the electoral roll.

As per the provisional figures provided by Dr. Quaicoe, the Commission has surpassed its goal of registering 623,000 first-time voters, reaching a total of 747,715 by the end of the 22nd day.

In an interview on JoyNews, Dr. Quaicoe mentioned, “Our target was 623,000, so we’ve surpassed that by approximately 100,000.”

When asked about the Commission’s reaction to exceeding its target, he emphasized that the focus is on the quality of the registrations rather than just meeting numbers.

He further explained, “Political parties are raising concerns about the registration of minors and foreigners, indicating that there’s a need to clean up the register.”

Regarding the challenge cases, Dr. Quaicoe noted, “We currently have around 12,000 cases… they were challenged during registration due to doubts about their age, citizenship, or residency in claimed districts.”

He added, “The adjudication process has begun, and we anticipate completion by next week. Interestingly, the political parties themselves, being part of the process, have the authority to vote on disqualifications.”

Meanwhile, the EC has garnered support from political parties to propose legislation in Parliament, establishing the Ghana Card as the sole document for verifying citizenship during voter registration.

This move aims to address issues like underage registration and foreign nationals attempting to register, a stance notably favored by the NPP.

Only individuals suffering from unconscious incompetence would blame depreciating cedi on NPP gov’t – Dr. Stephen Amoah

Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Stephen Amoah has responded to critics attributing the current cedi depreciation to President Akufo-Addo’s government.

During a media interaction on May 29, the Nhyiaeso MP emphasized that cedi depreciation has historically affected various governments and is not unique to the present administration.

As a former MASLOC boss, Dr. Amoah pointed out that the import-driven nature of the economy is a significant factor contributing to cedi depreciation.

He criticized those who attribute the issue solely to the current government, suggesting that this perspective shows a lack of awareness or intellectual dishonesty.

“Unless one is suffering from unconscious incompetence or displaying intellectual dishonesty that would say that cedi depreciation is NPP government” noting that the problem is a “ritual” one.

“It’s an issue that needs nationalistic attention. So far as we keep on being imported-driven economy, we’ll be having problems with cedi because we import almost everything.

“But Insha-Allah, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, next year if he comes, we are going to design a long term framework to deal with the cedi,” he stated.

He referred to the problem as a recurring one, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach.

Dr. Amoah hinted at a long-term strategy under Dr. Bawumia’s potential presidency to address cedi depreciation.

He stressed the importance of a nationalistic approach and highlighted the dependency on imports as a core challenge.

He expressed optimism that under Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership, a strategic framework would be developed to tackle the issue effectively.

NPP agents prevented me from engaging first time voters – Dumelo on scuffle video

National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo has spoken about a video circulating online showing an encounter between himself and New Patriotic Party (NPP) agents at the Legon Campus voter registration center.

The incident took place while Dumelo was visiting the center to thank first-time voters, generating considerable public interest.

Dumelo clarified that his purpose at the center was to express gratitude and take photos with those registering for the upcoming election.

During this interaction, NPP agents approached him, claiming his actions were unauthorized but failed to provide a valid reason.

Dumelo expressed concern over what he perceived as the agents’ inflated sense of authority due to their government positions, leading them to try and prevent his engagement with new voters.

He recounted an incident where an NPP agent objected to a student taking a photo with him, escalating tensions.

Dumelo stressed that his presence wasn’t politically motivated but aimed at acknowledging and appreciating new voters.

He criticized the NPP agents’ actions as obstructive to meaningful voter engagement, contrasting it with the current NPP MP, Lydia Alhassan, who engages with voters in similar settings.

I became a houseowner at age 17 – Abedi Pele

Legendary Ghanaian footballer Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’ has revealed that he became a homeowner at the young age of 17.

Abedi, the father of the Ayew brothers Andre and Jordan, enjoyed a successful football career spanning over two decades.

He began his career at Real Tamale United (RTU) in Ghana, before his talent took him to Qatari side Al Sadd, where he spent a year before moving to FC Zurich.

Now 59 years old, Abedi later played for clubs including Olympique Marseille, Lille, Lyon, Torino, 1860 Munich, and Al Ain before retiring from professional football.

Abedi disclosed that he earned around $10,000 when he joined Al Sadd as a teenager following the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Libya. He used part of this money to build his first house in Alajo, Accra, becoming a homeowner at just 17.

“We went to Libya in 1982 and then returned home. At the age of 17 or 17-and-a-half, I turned professional. My first professional country was Qatar, where I played for about two years and won every trophy,” Abedi told Bola Ray in an interview.

“I earned $10,000 at the time, which was a substantial amount 20 to 22 years ago. RTU had a signing-on fee of $50,000 to $60,000. Although I didn’t receive a signing bonus, I had my salaries and bonuses.

“When I came back to Ghana, I built a small house at Alajo near the railway line. So, by the age of 17 or 18, I had built my first house.”

Abedi was a national treasure in the 1980s and 1990s, part of the team that won Ghana’s last AFCON trophy in 1982. He was also named African Footballer of the Year three times and won the UEFA Champions League with Olympique Marseille.
