We’re not poor people, we can’t be bought with money – Family of deceased 3-year-old to Lil Win

Ghanaian actor LilWin was arrested on Monday in connection with an accident that resulted in the death of a young boy.

The family of the three-year-old victim, who died in an accident involving popular actor Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as LilWin, have asserted that they will not be intimidated in their pursuit of justice.

In an interview on Angel FM, a family member emphasized their determination not to be underestimated, highlighting that the victim’s family is not impoverished.

“He thinks he is dealing with a bunch of poor people… we have taken this matter very seriously. Some comments by his Public Relations Officer (PRO) led a presenter to warn me against being bribed, and I told him that anyone familiar with our family in Kumasi knows we are neither destitute nor hungry.

“The Nyarko Towers where we live is just a modest place we rent in town; we go home on weekends,” said the deceased boy’s uncle.

“So if they think they can bully us, they should think again,” he added.

On Monday, June 3, 2024, LilWin was granted bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties by the Asokore Mampong District Court in Kumasi following his arrest by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Manhyia Divisional Command shortly after his release from the hospital.

The arrest stems from a fatal accident in which the vehicle LilWin was driving collided with another, leading to the death of the three-year-old boy.

The bereaved family has been outspoken in their demand for justice. The police explained that the delay in LilWin’s arrest was due to his medical condition.

The actor is currently under investigation and faces charges of dangerous driving and causing harm through negligence.

Despite the delay due to LilWin’s health, his lawyer, Margaret Adjei-Twum, argued for bail, citing his injuries, which included internal bleeding, and emphasized the necessity of bail for him to continue receiving medical treatment, as reported by citinewsroom.com.

Adjei-Twum assured the court that her client’s prominence in Ghana and his willingness to face legal proceedings eliminated any risk of flight.

The defense also expressed concerns about the police rushing the case to court before LilWin had fully recovered.

The case has been adjourned to June 27, 2024.

    Background

LilWin was reportedly driving at high speed a few weeks ago when he collided with the vehicle carrying little Nana Yaw and his father, Jacob Kofi Ampomah.

Both Nana Yaw and his father were initially taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where the boy succumbed to his injuries.

Dont blame Ghanaian citizens for valuing dual citizenship over education, blame society – Saddick Adams

Renowned sports journalist from Ghana Saddick Adams has urged fellow Ghanaians to remain calm regarding a fellow citizen who recently obtained Dutch citizenship.

This individual, who had been living in the Netherlands for years and recently acquired Dutch citizenship, made a statement equating the value of a Dutch passport to that of a PhD.

While this remark sparked criticism from some Ghanaians, Adams believes that their outrage is unwarranted.

Adams acknowledges that he personally prioritizes education but notes that many Ghanaians place a higher value on dual citizenship.

He points out that even prominent leaders in Ghana often prioritize acquiring citizenship abroad, as evidenced by instances of legislators taking extended breaks to give birth in Western countries for the sake of obtaining passports.

While Adams acknowledges that valuing a passport over academic achievements might seem disrespectful to those with PhDs or pursuing them, he emphasizes that this sentiment reflects a prevailing mindset in Ghana.

He suggests that instead of condemning individuals for such views, it’s important to recognize the broader societal context that influences these perspectives.

Actor Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt has formally requested a Los Angeles court to remove “Pitt” from her name.

Born to Hollywood icons Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Shiloh took this legal step on her 18th birthday, May 27.

Angelina Jolie initiated divorce proceedings from Brad Pitt in September 2016, though their separation’s details remain unresolved, awaiting a settlement.

Simultaneously, they’re embroiled in a legal tussle over Chateau Miraval, a French winery they co-own.

Shiloh, their third-oldest child among six, follows in her siblings’ footsteps regarding name changes.

Earlier, her 15-year-old sister Vivienne altered her surname in a Playbill for a Broadway production.

Similarly, in a 2023 video, their eldest daughter Zahara introduced herself with the surname Jolie upon joining a sorority.

Despite being an accomplished voice actor in Kung Fu Panda 3, Shiloh is the first to officially petition for a name change among the siblings.

The legal request coincides with ongoing developments in Jolie and Pitt’s divorce saga, stemming from incidents dating back to 2016, including allegations of physical and verbal abuse.

‘I was misconstrued’ – James Gardiner dispels fighting depression

Ghanaian actor James Gardiner has spoken out about misunderstandings regarding his mental well-being, particularly dispelling rumors of struggling with depression after a recent Instagram post on his birthday.

He made it clear that his frustration stemmed from the lack of backing for his business ventures by those close to him, which left him dissatisfied and prompted his social media venting.

Gardiner emphasized that expressing discontent online doesn’t necessarily equate to being depressed.

During an interview with Elsie Lamar on GhanaWeb TV at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), he set the record straight.

“I was misunderstood. There’s a distinction between feeling unhappy and being clinically depressed. I was unhappy due to launching a business that didn’t receive the support it needed from people I expected support from. That’s what my post was about.”

He elaborated, “Imagine putting effort into a business that doesn’t pan out; that’s what I meant. People can have their opinions, but I don’t let it affect me. I’ve been in this industry long enough to understand its dynamics.”

This clarification follows Gardiner’s Instagram update on May 16, 2024, where he detailed the challenges his business had faced.

Despite some interpreting this as a sign of depression, Gardiner clarified that his sentiments were rooted in business frustrations, not clinical depression.

“In 2018, I started a car rental company. It was going well until Covid hit, and then the business suffered for about 2 years. I sold the cars and invested in a nightclub in Ghana, hoping for success. But it hasn’t worked out as expected, at least not yet. Not much support from friends and family. The ones who did support really did! I’m working and doing what I love—acting! But I’m just not happy. I feel empty, honestly. Is all of this worth it?” the post read.

I hardly make friends – Jim Iyke

Nollywood star Jim Iyke recently opened up about his challenges in forming lasting friendships.

He explained that he struggles to connect with people who hold onto grudges and prefers relationships with those who focus on the present.

Speaking on Teju Babyface’s “Deep Dive” podcast, Iyke discussed how his continuous personal growth makes it hard for some to keep up.

He mentioned that he values friends who understand his evolving nature and don’t get upset if they don’t hear from him for weeks.

Iyke emphasized that he’s not the type of friend who will be constantly available or remember every occasion.

“We don’t dwell on emotions. We simply don’t have the time for it. That’s why I can’t cultivate friendships with just anyone.

“I require someone who isn’t fixated on my past actions. I’m constantly evolving, and my rate of growth is too rapid for most to keep up with. Who I was yesterday is not who I am today. Not everyone can adapt to that. I need someone who won’t be offended if I don’t contact them for weeks on end.”

He continued, “There was a time I went without contacting a friend for four months, and neither did he reach out to me. It didn’t bother us. But when we do connect, it’s meaningful. I don’t seek a friend who expects my presence every day. It’s simply impractical because I won’t always be available for every occasion.”

“I might miss your child’s birthday or your anniversary. When you face challenges, I might not be the first person you think to reach out to. However, when I sense that you genuinely need me, I’ll move mountains to support you. In essence, you determine the type of friends you want in your life.”

However, he stressed that when he does connect with someone, it’s meaningful, and he will go to great lengths to support them when they need him.

Ultimately, he believes that the kind of friends you have in life is a reflection of your own values and priorities.

LilWin and his management team didn’t apply ‘common sense’ in handling accident saga – Vida Adutwumwaa

Entertainment commentator Vida Adutwumwaa has strongly criticized actor Lil Win and his team’s response to the accident that led to the tragic death of a 3-year-old child.

Adutwumwaa pointed out flaws in the two statements released by LilWin’s management, noting their failure to appropriately address the incident.

She argued that LilWin’s delayed condolences and lack of clear commitment to resolving the matter showed a lack of tact and sensitivity in handling such a delicate situation.

“This issue would not have escalated, but it seems common sense did not prevail, which is why all these issues have arisen. His management team released an initial statement responding to criticisms.

“At a time when a family had lost a child, they should have addressed the child’s death and consoled the bereaved family.

She continued, “Secondly, LilWin released another statement where he prioritized the postponement of his movie premiere in Sunyani in the headline and mentioned the boy’s death in the third paragraph. LilWin did not demonstrate any sensibility in the statements he released.”

In related developments, LilWin was taken into police custody on June 3, 2024, after being discharged from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital following the accident.

The accident occurred on May 25, 2024, near Grace Baptist Church in Amakom, Kumasi, where LilWin’s car collided with another vehicle, resulting in injuries and the tragic death of a young child.

If Lil Win is found guilty, he must be punished – Ola Michaels on death of 3-year-old boy

Media figure Ola Michael has urged the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to ensure fairness in their investigation of the accident involving actor Kwadwo Nkansah, also known as LilWin, which tragically led to the death of three-year-old Tawiah Ampomah.

Michael adviseD the public to refrain from making premature judgments and to await the police’s findings after their thorough investigation.

He emphasizes that despite LilWin’s status as a well-known actor, justice should be served without bias if he is found responsible for the accident.

“Listening to the deceased’s father, he said his son was thrown to the front seat when the crash happened. We all know that if the child was not using a seat belt while sitting at the back, this would occur… I think we should be measured in our criticisms and exercise patience for the police to investigate the case and identify who caused it.

“However, if they find out that it’s LilWin’s fault, the law should deal with him appropriately, there should not be any favoritism. Regardless of his personality. The same way the law should deal with the deceased boy’s father if he is found culpable,” he told MzGee during the United Showbiz programme aired on UTV.

Speaking on the United Showbiz program on UTV, Michael pointed out the importance of patience in letting the authorities determine the cause of the accident and hold accountable whoever is at fault, including LilWin if proven guilty.

BOG remains policy solvent in conducting operations despite loss recorded in 2023

Despite incurring a loss of 10.5 billion cedis in 2023, the Bank of Ghana (BOG) asserts its continued policy solvency to cover monetary policy operation costs.

This loss, although substantial, marks a marked improvement from the 60.8 billion cedis loss in 2022, as detailed in the Bank of Ghana’s Annual Report and Financial Statement released on May 31, 2024.

The Bank of Ghana’s 2023 Annual Statement highlights a total income of GH¢8.8 billion against total monetary operation costs of GH¢8.4 billion, maintaining a positive policy solvency factor of GH¢0.4 billion.

“The impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme on the balance sheet of the Bank of Ghana was discussed extensively and a broad consensus was reached amongst the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Ghana and the IMF on early recapitalisation of the Bank of Ghana” it added in its financial statement.

The board of the Bank of Ghana noted that it expects the steadfast implementation of these policy steps alongside fiscal rectitude, and continued maintenance of a tight monetary policy stance to turn this around.

It also argued that it “will provide enough basis for continued operational policy efficiency and the existence of the Bank of Ghana for the foreseeable future.”

This is comparable to the GH¢4.27 billion policy solvency factor of 2022.

The bank’s board emphasizes continuity in efficient operations despite the loss and projects stabilization in the exchange rate with decreasing inflation.

Notably, it plans to address major expenditure areas and pursue policies to stabilize inflation expectations and exchange rates.

To achieve recovery and strengthen its financial position, the Bank of Ghana plans to avoid financing the government’s budget and optimize its investment portfolio and operating costs. Additionally, plans are underway to recapitalize the bank in line with IMF agreements.

Financially, 2023 saw reduced operating expenses at GH₵19.2 billion compared to GH₵66.9 billion in 2022, contributing to an improved outlook despite the recorded loss.

Michael Addo, the Constituency Secretary of the Awutu Senya East New Patriotic Party (NPP), received a call in the early hours of Sunday, June 2, regarding this dispute.

Ato Koomson, having arrived at the scene before Michael Addo, alerted him about the escalating tension.

Ato mentioned that he had information suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) planned to disrupt the proceedings.

Despite efforts to calm the situation, Ato Koomson was reportedly stabbed by an individual believed to be affiliated with the NDC.

Michael Addo emphasized their commitment to pursuing justice regardless of the parties involved, urging the police to expedite action in resolving the matter.

Although the police didn’t disclose the identities of those arrested, reports indicate that they are NDC members.

King Adawu, an NPP member who also sustained minor injuries, recounted that the alleged NDC member pulled out a knife during the altercation, resulting in Ato Koomson’s injury to the chest and a minor cut to King Adawu’s hand as he attempted to intervene.

  • Key notes of Artiste of the Year Stonebwoy’s victory speech

Key notes of Artiste of the Year Stonebwoy’s victory speech

Upon being crowned ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the 25th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), Stonebwoy delivered a heartfelt victory speech, sharing long-held sentiments.

Here are five noteworthy points from his address:

    Dedication to his mother:
Stonebwoy credited his success to his late mother, calling her his ‘lucky charm’ whose blessings have guided him.

He expressed profound gratitude to her for the blessings he has received and admitted being overwhelmed with emotion, struggling to articulate his feelings.

“Thanks to the most high God and my mother wherever you are resting in peace, thank you for showering your blessings upon your son. I wrote a very long speech but I am short for words,” he said.

Firm belief in winning three times:
Contrary to popular belief, Stonebwoy asserted that he had won the ‘Artiste of the Year’ award not twice, but three times, including in 2019.

He urged Charterhouse to acknowledge his 2019 victory, emphasizing his consistency and hard work over the years.

“I have been very consistent and I have been working very hard throughout the years. Ever since I won the Ghana Music Awards in 2015, I won it again in 2019, but we all see what happened. So I just want to plead with Charterhouse that as honourable as they are, they should make sure that they announce the winner which I am confident that it was me,” he stated.

Stonebwoy’s comments come five years after an infamous onstage altercation with Shatta Wale during the 2019 VGMAs, which led to both artists being stripped of their awards and issued indefinite bans.

At the 2019 event, Stonebwoy won ‘Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year’ and ‘Best Collaboration of the Year,’ while Shatta Wale secured ‘Highlife Song of the Year’ for ‘My Level’ and ‘Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year’ for ‘Gringo.’

Following the incident, Charterhouse did not announce a winner for the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category, leaving the late Ebony Reigns, the previous year’s recipient, as the reigning ‘Artiste of the Year.’

    Addressing unwarranted criticism:
Stonebwoy spoke about the unwarranted hate he has faced as he progressed in his career, attributing it to envy and spite from detractors.

He acknowledged that increased success brings increased scrutiny and negativity but remained undeterred by these challenges.

“We all saw it in the news. A lot of things were going on in the news because of how hard I work. No matter what you do, the higher you go, the more your haters,” he remarked.

Recognition of his fanbase and team:
Stonebwoy expressed gratitude to his fanbase, BHIM Nation, for their unwavering support.

He thanked everyone from Ashaiman to the global stage, highlighting the unity and strength of BHIM Nation.

He also thanked his team members for their dedication and contribution to his success.

“I couldn’t have done it without BHIM Nation. Thank you to everyone, from Ashaiman, Volta region to the world. BHIM Nation to the world. To all my team members I say thank you,” he stated.

    Tribute to his wife:
Stonebwoy honored his wife, acknowledging her as his pillar of strength and confidante. He expressed his gratitude and invoked blessings upon her for her unwavering support.

In his victory speech, Stonebwoy not only celebrated his triumph but also emphasized the importance of family, fans, and perseverance in the face of challenges.

“I want to acknowledge my wife (draws her close into his arms). She is my friend, my companion, and everything. God bless you.”

Amaarae pulls out of TGMA’s performance last minute, blames Charterhouse

Ghanian musician Amaarae blamed Telecel Ghana Music Award (TGMA) organizers CHARTERHOUSE for lacking professionalism.

She shared that she arrived in Ghana from Spain on May 31 after a 12-hour flight, ready to rehearse with her fellow performers for what is considered Ghana’s biggest entertainment night.

However, she was deeply disappointed because, despite a prior agreement with the TGMA producers, her team’s technical requests were unmet, and rehearsals were “3 hours behind schedule (I didn’t get a rehearsal last night).”

The following day, the morning of the event, Amaarae reported that the TGMA’s production manager was unresponsive to calls from her team regarding the missed rehearsals and the needed equipment.

Expressing her frustration, she revealed that she had longed to perform at the Ghana Music Awards for three years. “Only for my team to be completely ignored and frustrated by their production manager,” she lamented, leading her to cancel her performance, even though the TGMA’s CEO and her management worked hard to make it happen.

Despite the setback, the international music star affirmed her unwavering love for Ghana, stating that flying in a 10-member crew was “an investment in quality” to deliver the best show possible, akin to her international performances. Unfortunately, this would not be possible due to the circumstances.

Amaarae thanked her hardworking team and noted that while the situation was frustrating, it would not ruin her Saturday night, as she planned to go out and could be spotted in a club.

  • Revenue requirement for second quarter projected at GHC6.81 billion – PURC

Revenue requirement for second quarter projected at GHC6.81 billion – PURC

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has estimated that the revenue needed for the second quarter will be GH₵6.81 billion.

This projection signifies a GH₵1.14 billion increase compared to the revenue required in the first quarter, which was GHS5.67 billion.

In response to this, the PURC has announced a tariff increase for Electricity and Water, effective from July 1 to September 30, 2024.

Specifically, there will be a 3.45% increase in electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers (0-30kWh) and a 5.84% increase for all other residential consumers.

Dr. Ishmael Ackah, the Executive Secretary of the PURC, stated in a signed statement dated May 31 that the Commission aims to recover GHS5.90 billion out of the GHS6.81 billion required for the second quarter.

“Revenue Requirement for the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) Total revenue requirement for the first quarter of 2024, amounted to GH₵5.67 billion. In the second quarter, the revenue requirement is projected to be GH₵6.81 billion. This will result in an increase of GH₵1.14B over the first quarter revenue requirement. The Commission, however, decided to recover GH₵5.90 billion of the GH₵6.81 billion required for the second quarter.

“This decision was taken by the Commission taking into consideration the revenue collection performance of the sector since continuous increases in tariffs have not yielded the corresponding increase in revenue collection by the utilities to cover sector expenditure. In addition, the Commission considered the negative effect of passing on the entire revenue required in one tranche on customers. Thus, the difference of GH₵906.21 million, will be recovered in subsequent quarters.”

The decision to recover only a portion of the required revenue was made considering the sector’s revenue collection performance, as continuous tariff increases haven’t resulted in proportional revenue collection by the utilities.

Moreover, passing on the entire revenue requirement in one go would adversely impact customers. The remaining GH₵906.21 million will be recovered in subsequent quarters.

Additionally, PURC mentioned that the revenue requirement for the second quarter of 2024 for the Urban Water Supply Industry (UWSI) is GH₵670.18 million, with an additional GH₵34.33 million needing recovery.

“Revenue Requirement for the Urban Water Supply Industry (UWSI). Total revenue requirement for the water sector for the first quarter of 2024, amounted to GH₵635.86 million. Revenue requirement for the second quarter of 2024 amounted to GHS670.18 million. An additional GH₵34.33 million needs to be recovered in the second quarter of 2024. The water tariff has been adjusted upwards by 5.16%,” PURC said.

This adjustment includes a 5.16% increase in water tariffs.

  • World Bank grants $250m to support Ghana’s financial sector

World Bank grants $250m to support Ghana’s financial sector

The World Bank has sanctioned a $250 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) for the five-year Ghana Financial Stability Project.

This initiative will bolster Ghana’s Financial Sector Strengthening Strategy (FSSS) by enhancing financial stability through the recapitalization of viable banks and Specialized Deposit-taking Institutions (SDIs) affected by Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP).

The financial system is vital to the Ghanaian economy, offering essential services to households, businesses, and the government, and facilitating economic growth.

To mitigate the severe impacts of the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) on financial institutions, the government established the Ghana Financial Sector Stability Fund (GFSF) to provide solvency support to banks, pension funds, insurance companies, fund managers, and collective investment schemes.

“This project will enhance Ghana’s financial stability by providing solvency support to banks and SDIs impacted by the DDEP through the GFSF,” said Robert R. Taliercio, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. “By directly supporting banks and SDIs, the project will benefit Ghana’s financial sector and the economy, ensuring depositors and other financial consumers have access to savings, payments, and other core financial services from adequately capitalized banks and SDIs.”

The Ghana Financial Stability Project is expected to immediately assist eligible undercapitalized but viable banks and SDIs and will be available to other banks and SDIs that may require support in the future due to potential new losses, thus providing a safety net against unexpected financial setbacks.

“The World Bank Group’s support aims to mitigate short-term shocks and improve prospects for long-term sustainable development and resilience against future challenges. The project promotes financial stability, crucial for protecting individuals and preserving jobs,” said Carlos Leonardo Vicente, Senior Financial Specialist and Team Lead.

The project complements the World Bank’s Development Program Financing series and the IMF-Extended Credit Facility, which support reforms to enhance the macroeconomic environment, enabling financial institutions to operate profitably and generate internal capital.

It also aligns with other World Bank-funded projects aimed at economic recovery and job creation in Ghana, such as the Ghana Development Financing Project, which supported the establishment of the Development Bank of Ghana and provides long-term financing to small and medium enterprises and small corporates.

Announce 2019 Artiste of the Year – Stonebwoy tells TGMA

Celebrated Ghanaian artist Livingstone Etse Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy, made a powerful plea for recognition during his acceptance speech at the 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

Upon receiving his latest honor, Stonebwoy reflected on his journey and addressed past controversies.

“I have been very consistent, and I have been very hardworking throughout the years,” Stonebwoy remarked. “Ever since I won the Ghana Music Artist of the Year in 2015, I won it again in 2019, but we all see what happened.”

His comments referred to the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, now the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, where an altercation with fellow artist Shatta Wale disrupted the ceremony, resulting in the Artist of the Year award being withheld.

Stonebwoy appealed to Charterhouse, the award organizers, saying, “I just want to plead with Charterhouse, as honorable as they are, to make sure that they announce the winner, which I’m confident was Stonebwoy for 2019.”

The 2019 incident, which escalated on stage, generated significant media coverage and industry discussions. Both artists have since moved on, with Stonebwoy focusing on his music and career growth.

At the 25th TGMA, Stonebwoy was recognized as the TGMA Artist of the Year. His speech highlighted his personal achievements and underscored the need for resolution and clarity regarding past awards.

As the Ghana Music Awards continue to evolve, Stonebwoy’s call for fairness and acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in celebrating artistic excellence.

FDA expresses concern over increasing trend of shisha usage among SHS students in Ashanti Region

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has raised concerns about the rising trend of shisha use among senior high school students in the Ashanti Region.

The authority has also noted an increase in the abuse of other drugs, which poses a significant threat to the future of these young individuals.

Smoking shisha, which involves inhaling flavored tobacco through a water pipe, contains nicotine and can lead to addiction.

Public health organizations, including the World Health Organization, warn that shisha smoking can be as harmful as cigarette smoking.

To combat this trend, the FDA, in collaboration with the KIDA Network, has intensified efforts to educate senior high school students about the dangers and consequences of drug abuse.

Regulatory Officer Prince Osei Owusu has called for stronger cooperation between the Ghana Education Service and the FDA to tackle the issue.

“Students are abusing drugs, especially with the introduction of shisha. This is a modern way of introducing cigarettes into the system, targeting the youth. Many of them don’t realize that shisha is also a form of tobacco.

“I believe that with this information, students will be enlightened and will understand that shisha is a form of tobacco. Based on the schools we’ve visited, I can say that its use is increasing.”

“I think the Ghana Education Service should collaborate with the FDA so we can have access to more schools, as this is where the youth are concentrated.”

Students who have been educated about the risks of drug abuse have committed to avoiding all forms of it.

Diya Williams, Group Coordinator for the KIDA Network, emphasized the need for more awareness about the consequences of drug abuse and addiction.

“We aim to raise more awareness because we believe the current message isn’t loud enough. We’ve added our voices to educate not just the youth but the general public on the risks of drug abuse and addiction.”

NPP does not belong to Akyem people – Founding father

Founding father of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Attah Boamah in New Jersey, has called for a new leadership within the national party.

He expressed that the NPP requires new leaders due to widespread dissatisfaction with the current administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Boamah criticized Akufo-Addo for failing to uphold the principles of discipline and accountability that he had promised.

Speaking at the NPP USA’s 30th anniversary event, attended by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Boamah stated, “What our forefathers did is what we are supposed to continue with. The party right now needs good leadership.”

“Nana Addo has failed the NPP. Why? He came in and swore to us that he would use discipline and accountability,” he added.

Boamah also issued a warning to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other party officials, including former senior minister Osafo-Maafo, reminding them that the NPP is not the property of any single ethnic group.

“He (Akufo-Addo) failed. Look at what is going on in Ghana right now. The party doesn’t belong to the Akyem people. How many Akyem people in Ghana have registered to vote?

“This is a warning to the Vice President and the party officials, Osafo-Maafo, and the rest of them; they all need to sit back,” he said.

  • Ghanaians to pay more utility tariffs effective July 1

Ghanaians to pay more utility tariffs effective July 1

Starting July 1, 2024, household and industrial consumers will see an increase in utility tariffs for electricity and water, following the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) second-quarter review under the Quarterly Tariff Review Mechanism.

The PURC has announced a 3.45% increase in electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers (0-30kWh).

Other residential electricity consumers (31 kWh and above), as well as non-residential users, will face a 5.84% increase.

Industrial electricity consumers will experience a 4.92% increase, effective from the same date.

Water tariffs will also rise by 5.16% across all customer classes for the period under review, according to PURC’s quarterly update.

These changes will be in effect from July 1, 2024, to September 30, 2024, as per the second-quarter tariff announcement.

“These reviews are undertaken to maintain the real value of the tariffs, thereby keeping the utility service providers financially viable to enable them to deliver their services to consumers,” stated the Commission.

The decision to raise electricity and water tariffs was influenced by key uncontrollable factors, including the exchange rate between the US Dollar and the Ghana Cedi, domestic inflation, the electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, particularly natural gas.

The Commission also took into account the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians before determining the new tariffs.

During the review period, there was no change in the generation mix between hydro and thermal power. However, the weighted average cost of gas (WACOG) rose by 5.23%, from USD 7.6426/MMBtu to USD 8.0422/MMBtu.

The Cedi depreciated against the Dollar by 20.80%, moving from GHS 12.1349 in the first quarter to GHS 14.6584 in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, inflation eased slightly from 28.27% in the first quarter to 24.38% in the second quarter of 2024.

In the first-quarter review, there was no change in electricity tariffs for lifeline consumers, and an average reduction of 6.56% for those consuming 301kWh and above. Consumers using more than 301kWh saw an average reduction of 4.98%.

The water tariff for the first quarter of 2024 remained at 0.34%, unchanged from the fourth quarter of 2023.
