13th African Games: We were promised GHC500 instead of GHC200 – Frustrated volunteers express fury

A viral video circulating on social media has captured the frustration of numerous youth volunteers who are expressing their dissatisfaction over the inadequate compensation received for their services at the African games.

During an interview on CitiTV addressing this issue, volunteers voiced their discontent with the GHC200 payment they received, which fell short of the promised GHC500.

The aggrieved volunteers have declared their intention to continue protesting until their concerns are addressed and proper compensation is provided.

Many individuals reacting to the situation noted that they could have chosen to stay at home and take on other small jobs but opted to volunteer based on the promised payment.

One volunteer shared their experience of travelling from the Northern Region to fulfil their commitment, only to receive GHC200 in return, highlighting the widespread disappointment among those who dedicated their time and effort to support the event.

“I travelled all the way from Northern Region because of this yet we were only given GHC200, what will GHC200 do, they promised GHC500, we are waiting for our money.”

Chairperson of Volunteers for the 13th African Games, Juliana Addoyoba, has refuted claims that volunteers were promised a specific amount of GHC500 for transportation during the Games.

My cook-a-thon attempt was meant to combat the menace of drug abuse – Chef Faila

Ghanaian Chef Faila Abdul Razak has recently shared profound insights into her Guinness World Record (GWR) attempt for the longest cooking marathon, highlighting its impact beyond the culinary realm.

In a recent interview with Berla Mundi on TV3, Chef Faila emphasised that the cook-a-thon, held in the Northern region, transcended being a mere culinary challenge.

She pointed out that it played a significant role in combating drug abuse in the region.

“Before the cook-a-thon, we were combating drug abuse in the Northern region, which was severe at that time. Despite our efforts to steer the youth away from it, the same drug addicts participated in the Cook-a-thon for 24 hours. They refrained from smoking for extended periods because it was prohibited on the premises,” Chef Faila remarked.

She expressed unwavering belief in the importance of her endeavour, stating that even if she had perished during the marathon, it would have been a sacrifice worth making.

“If anyone asked me that question, I would have said it’s worth it. My people would have forever celebrated me for a noble cause. Haven’t our peers died from terminating illegal pregnancies or succumbed to peer pressure for various illegal activities?” she questioned passionately.

Commencing her record attempt on January 1, 2024, Chef Faila dedicated an astonishing 227 hours to cooking.

Despite the bid being unsuccessful due to rest break violations, she received widespread praise and recognition for her dedication.

As a result of her remarkable efforts, Chef Faila received an invitation from the Ghana Tourism Authority to represent the country at the International Horticultural Expo in Doha, Qatar.

VIDEO: I almost died – AY Poyoo on split with former label

Ghanaian artist AY Poyoo recently opened up about the challenges he faced after his entire music catalogue was removed from online platforms following a dispute with his former management team, Aborga Records.

The “Goat” sensation terminated his contract with Aborga Records due to disagreements over career plans and personal preferences.

This split was officially announced on March 23, 2024.

According to their agreement, Aborga Records maintains rights to all songs produced under the contract and seeks to recoup investments totaling GH₵20,622.

“You tell someone you have the biggest song in Ghana, he asks the title of the song and you have to tell him that the song has been deleted by your former management. It means you and your management are fools.

“Because this is business, we have to have profit in the business till we die, then our children will come and continue. But yeah, it has affected me. I almost died. Seriously, I almost died. But thank God. Because not many artistes have the strength to start all over again from zero like me,” AY Poyoo stated.

In a video, AY Poyoo, whose real name is Emmanuel Yeboah, expressed his struggles and disappointment, stating that the removal of his songs has significantly impacted his career and financial stability.

“As an up-and-coming artist. Look at me. Imagine I’m earning about $2,000, $3,000 a month and suddenly you’re not making anything because all your songs have been deleted from online platforms.

“You have an issue with management and when they’re going, they just delete your entire catalogue. It shouldn’t be like that. It shouldn’t be like this.

“If we have a problem, we have to share a percentage, so that even if you are gone, I have a part in the songs because we worked together to create them. But it wasn’t like that.”

The deletion not only affects his income but also damages his reputation, as he can no longer showcase his work to potential investors or reference his achievements.

AY Poyoo called for a fairer system in the music industry, emphasising the need for equal profit sharing and rights protection for artists, especially when parting ways with management teams.

Despite these setbacks, it was reported in November 2023 that AY Poyoo signed a contract with Nigeria’s TMY Empire, indicating a new chapter in his career as he continues to work on projects and expand his network in Nigeria.

Ghana’s creative industry is to blame for Funny Face’s ordeal – Shatta Wale

Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale has shared his thoughts on comedian Funny Face‘s current challenges, suggesting they point to deeper issues within the creative sector.

In a recent Facebook post, the dancehall artist emphasised that Funny Face’s difficulties go beyond personal relationships.

“The creative arts sector must confront the destructive cycle fueled by depression and frustration. It’s essential to tackle the root causes. Funny Face’s situation isn’t solely about his marital issues.

“This reflects broader issues within our creative community. Let’s acknowledge the flaws in our systems and address them head-on. It’s time to raise our voices and bring about positive change! My heartfelt apologies to my brother Funny Face, may God guide you through this,”  Shatta Wale stated on Facebook.

Funny Face was detained in police custody following a car accident where he reportedly hit five pedestrians while driving around 8 PM on Sunday, March 24, 2023, at Kasoa, Kakraba Junction, according to social media reports.

In an update, Funny Face, driving his Hyundai Atos at the time, was arrested by the police after the incident.

Funny Face’s license should have been seized long ago considering his mental state – Blakk Rasta

Reggae artist Blakk Rasta has voiced concerns over comedian Funny Face‘s continued possession of his driver’s license despite his well-known battle with mental health issues.

Blakk Rasta questioned why authorities allowed Funny Face to retain his driving privileges, suggesting that the nation had failed in ensuring his full recovery before granting such permissions.

In an interview on the “Urban Blend” show on 3FM, Blakk Rasta expressed disappointment in how mental health is handled in Ghana.

He highlighted the disparity in treatment, suggesting that if the accident involved government officials, the response would have been different.

Blakk Rasta placed blame on the state for permitting Funny Face to drive under the circumstances.

“Our nation has failed the citizenry again. We do not take mental health seriously and it hurts me. Funny Face will walk free anywhere he goes. Once it is proven that he was suffering from a certain kind of mental sickness, my brother, what should we have done?” Blakk Rasta questioned, emphasising the need for stricter measures in such cases.

He further criticised the lack of action taken regarding Funny Face’s driver’s licence following his mental health struggles.

Blakk Rasta suggested that the first step should have been to revoke his licence and ensure proper psychiatric care.

“Funny Face had been to a psychiatric hospital a couple of times. Did they recommend that his driver’s licence should be taken away? We have failed the little children involved in the accident. We have failed Funny Face himself,” Blakk Rasta lamented.

The incident in question occurred on Sunday, 24th March 2023, when Funny Face reportedly hit five pedestrians with his Hyundai Atos at Kasoa, Kakraba Junction.

While there were no fatalities, the victims sustained significant injuries.

The criticism from Blakk Rasta adds to the ongoing debate about mental health awareness and support systems in Ghana.

The concern is not just about Funny Face’s situation but also about broader issues surrounding mental health care and public safety.

Speaking in an interview with Zion Felix, Mr. Logic highlighted the substantial nature of his daily spending, attributing it to the demands of his profession and his active engagement in the entertainment industry.

I intend to unveil fresh songs alongside an EP in the upcoming months – Mr. Drew

During the recent Pulse Chat Session at this year’s African Music Business Dialogue, Afrobeat sensation Mr Drew provided a sneak peek into his upcoming musical endeavors.

The dialogue, centred around ‘Why Content Creators are the New Taste Makers in Music Marketing,’ occurred on Friday, March 22, 2024.

Mr Drew, brimming with excitement, shared his plans to unveil fresh tracks and an EP in the coming months, setting the stage for eager anticipation among his fans.

“I’ve got an EP coming in May. I’ve got a single coming in a few weeks, in about three weeks, so watch out; it is going to be lovely,” he revealed during the discussion.

Speaking on the dialogue’s theme, Mr. Drew emphasised the crucial role of content creators in expanding the reach and impact of music.

He highlighted their talent for interpreting songs in unique ways, adding layers of meaning that may elude the artist’s original vision.

“Content creators have a way of reinterpreting our songs or our music in a way that the artiste couldn’t.

“You have them interpret the songs in a way that somebody will fall in love with it. Or we have someone who will break down the songs in a certain way and look at it, then people begin to and be like, oh that is why he said this at this point, or he sang this part the way he sang it.”

Mr Drew also stressed the importance of a clear vision and strategic planning for musicians, advising them to understand the desired trajectory for their songs and the target audience they aim to engage even before distribution begins.

“Even before you start distributing, you should have a plan, how big you want your song to be, the kind of people you want to reach,” he advised.

As excitement mounts for Mr Drew’s upcoming releases, fans and music enthusiasts eagerly await the arrival of his latest musical creations, poised to captivate audiences worldwide.

The discussion at the African Music Business Dialogue also featured insights from other notable speakers such as Endurance Grand and Official Starter, with moderation by Gideon Nicholas Day. You’re ungrateful Criss Waddle; it’s over between us – Showboy

The ongoing turmoil within the AMG Business camp shows no signs of peace, with Showboy launching a scathing attack on his once-close friend Criss Waddle.

Deported entertainer Showboy, also known as Sam Safo, has long been recognized as a trusted ally of Criss Waddle.

Just days ago, Criss Waddle publicly criticised Showboy in a self-recorded video, accusing him of causing rifts within the camp.

The root of the conflict appears to be Criss Waddle’s decision to prioritise his former protege Medikal over his longtime companion Showboy, a move that has left Showboy feeling betrayed and resentful.

Showboy has declared his intention to sever all ties with Criss Waddle, citing a lack of appreciation for his loyalty and efforts.

He revealed that he had gone to great lengths to assist Criss Waddle, including using his connections to help Waddle evade legal trouble with the FBI and facilitating his return to Ghana.

This latest development underscores the deepening rift within the AMG Business circle and raises questions about the future of the once-united camp.

I became a music producer due to my inability to afford studio sessions – King Paluta

Renowned musician Thomas Adjei Wireko known popularly as King Paluta has opened up about his decision to delve into music production alongside his rap career, citing financial difficulties as the driving force behind his choice.

The rapper, born Thomas Adjei Wireko, revealed on Tuesday, March 26, that early in his music journey, he faced financial challenges that prevented him from affording studio sessions. This led him to learn music production to bypass the need for costly studio time.

“Being a studio rat, you will learn. What got me into the production side is that back then, we did not have money to pay for studio sessions.

“So it occurred to us to also download the software and start learning with the recording and later we improved on it before we realized we were producing professionally,” he said on TV3’s New Day.

King Paluta expressed his determination to establish himself as a musician, even using his school fees to fund studio sessions. Reflecting on his past, he mentioned missing the opportunity to nurture his drawing talent due to focusing on business studies during secondary school.

“Sometimes, I sit down and ask myself why did I even go to school because I studied business but I have another talent which is drawing,” he shared. Despite these reflections, he believes his dedication to music has paid off, with his songs gaining significant recognition and views.

  • ECG will snub PURC and not present ‘dumsor’ timetable – Edward Bawa

ECG will snub PURC and not present ‘dumsor’ timetable – Edward Bawa

The Mines and Energy Committee member of Parliament, Edward Bawa, has expressed skepticism regarding the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) complying with the directives issued by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The PURC has set a deadline of March 27 for the ECG to publish a load management timetable and fulfil other demands.

One of the directives required the ECG to settle all power producers under the waterfall cash mechanism by March 25, a deadline that has already passed.

Additionally, the PURC has mandated the ECG to submit a comprehensive report on tariff revenue allocation, regulatory audit data, and operational matters by April 2, 2024.

Edward Bawa criticised the ECG’s management for disrespecting Parliament and the Ghanaian public, highlighting the ECG’s refusal to appear before the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament.

“ECG refused to appear before the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament. Just in line with how this government operates, ECG had the arrogance to look in the face of Parliament and refused to come.

“As a Minority, we have made our case… that was on Tuesday and on Wednesday, the House went on break. But some of us have said that when we come back to Parliament, we are going to cite ECG for contempt. You cannot look in the faces of the people’s representatives and say ‘to hell with you’.

“For Mahama to do what he is doing, it is because he is backed by very powerful people and unless we accept that there is a problem, we cannot address it. We have a very irresponsible government who has also appointed a very indisciplined, and to some extent a disrespectful management led by the board chairman Keli Gadzekpo and the Chief Executive Officer Dubik Mahama, who simply cannot care about the consumer as long as everyday they get whatever they want in life,” Edward Bawa stated.

He indicated the intention to pursue a contempt citation against the ECG upon Parliament’s return, emphasising the need for accountability and responsibility from the ECG’s leadership.

On the other hand, Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh opposed the release of a load-shedding timetable, describing it as wishing harm upon the country.

“Let those who want the timetable bring it. I don’t know of any timetable because the ECG has said it is not necessary. Why would someone just wish evil for the country?” he asked.

This stance drew condemnation from some Ghanaians who called into a radio show, expressing frustration over erratic power supply and the lack of a clear timetable for planning purposes.

Despite backlash, the Energy Ministry clarified that the Minister’s comments were misinterpreted, while social media users expressed outrage over the Minister’s suggestion for consumers to create their own load shedding timetable.

Love is a scam; prioritize money, health  – Victoria Hamah

Prominent women’s rights advocate and former Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms. Victoria Hamah,  has stirred controversy with her recent assertion that love is a deceptive notion.

In a Facebook post, she expressed her unorthodox perspective, emphasizing that health and financial stability are paramount in life.

The headline “Former Deputy Minister Labels Love a Scam, Advocates for Health and Wealth” encapsulates her provocative statement and the ensuing online discussions it sparked.

Despite the exact trigger for her post remaining ambiguous, Ms. Hamah’s declaration has ignited debates about the nature of love and its place in personal priorities.

This viewpoint represents a departure from her earlier stance in January, where she cautioned against the “superwoman” ideal that she argued could undermine femininity.

Ms. Hamah, known for her role as the founder of the Progressive Organization for Women Advancement (POWA), has long been a leading voice in advocating for women’s empowerment and challenging societal norms that restrict women’s opportunities.

Pragya drivers in the Ahafo Region expressed concern over a notable drop in sales following the ongoing teacher strike.

Drivers in Goaso highlight the significant impact of transporting school children during peak hours on their income.

The President of the National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, and the Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Jacob Anaba, on Monday, March 25, took on the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) over the ongoing nationwide strike by public school teachers.

While appearing as guests on JoyNews’ PM Express, the two reps from the two major teacher unions expressed their dissatisfaction with comments made by Mr Ben Arthur which they considered to be an attack on them for embarking on an industrial action.

On March 20, the three teacher unions namely, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) declared a strike due to unsatisfactory conditions of service.

According to the unions, the government had failed to renew its collective agreement, among other concerns, following its expiration in 2023.

They argued that since all efforts to get the government to the negotiation table have proven futile, laying down their tools was their last resort.

However, the strike has led to a sharp decrease in sales as parents and children are absent from the roads.

Drivers urged the government to address the strike issues promptly for teachers to resume classes, which they believe will boost sales and enhance their livelihoods.

Addressing reporters on Monday following his triumph in the recent elections, Faye, a newcomer to the political scene, expressed gratitude to the Senegalese populace for their support.

Faye is on track to assume the presidency after his primary rival conceded defeat, commending President Macky Sall and fellow candidates for upholding Senegal’s democratic values by acknowledging his win well before the official results were announced.

“In choosing me, the Senegalese people have opted for a departure from the past,” Faye declared during his inaugural public appearance post-election. “I pledge to lead with humility and transparency.”

Provisional results indicate Faye secured approximately 53.7% of the vote, with Amadou Ba, representing the current ruling coalition, garnering 36.2%, as reported by the electoral commission based on 90% of polling stations’ tallies in the initial round of voting.

Ba and Sall extended congratulations to Faye, who celebrated his 44th birthday on Monday, hailing the electoral outcome as a triumph for Senegal, whose reputation as one of West Africa’s most stable democracies faced a challenge when Sall postponed the elections.

“The Senegalese people have reaffirmed the robustness of our democracy… I wish him (Faye) success in leading our nation,” Ba remarked.

A smooth transition of power in Senegal would signify a significant boost for democracy in West Africa, a region that has witnessed eight military coups since 2020.

  • I suffered a miscarriage in 2015 while acting as a pregnant woman – Anne Hathaway

I suffered a miscarriage in 2015 while acting as a pregnant woman – Anne Hathaway

American actress Anne Hathaway, known for her roles in films like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Les Misérables,” recently opened up about a deeply personal experience she faced while acting on stage.

In 2015, during a six-week run of the one-woman show “Grounded,” where she portrayed a pregnant pilot, Hathaway suffered a miscarriage.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the 41-year-old actress revealed that her first pregnancy didn’t progress as expected, coinciding with her role in the play where she had to simulate giving birth every night.

Despite the challenges, she kept up appearances during the performances but confided in her friends backstage about her real struggles.

“It was too much to keep it in,” Hathaway expressed, reflecting on the emotional turmoil she faced during that period.

The experience led her to realise the prevalence of miscarriages and the often silent suffering that accompanies them.

Following the miscarriage, Hathaway and her husband, Adam Shulman, welcomed their first son, Jonathan, in March 2016.

“It’s not for a movie,” she wrote, alongside a photo of her baby bump. “All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”

However, the journey to expand their family wasn’t straightforward.

In July 2019, Hathaway announced her second pregnancy on Instagram, using the opportunity to shed light on her fertility challenges and offer support to others going through similar struggles.

In her interview, she emphasised the importance of sharing such experiences openly to combat feelings of isolation and shame.

“Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant,” she said, “it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone.”

Hathaway’s candidness resonated with many women, as she received heartfelt responses and shared moments of empathy with those who approached her.

“I thought, where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated? That’s where we take on damage. So I decided that I was going to talk about it.”

Now a mother of two, Hathaway encourages others to acknowledge the complexities of fertility journeys and to offer genuine support to those experiencing difficulties.

“When it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it, where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone, I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful,’” she said.

“‘I see you and I’ve been you.’”

Her story serves as a reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the power of shared experiences in fostering understanding and compassion.

  • Gospel music losing its spirituality; Empress Gifty, Piesie Esther are now carnal – Lenny Akpadie

Gospel music losing its spirituality; Empress Gifty, Piesie Esther are now carnal – Lenny Akpadie

Gospel musician Apostle Lenny Akpadie voiced his concerns about the direction of the gospel music industry, highlighting a trend towards sensuality and a loss of originality.

According to Akpadie, certain gospel musicians in Ghana are prioritizing self-promotion over the core message of spreading the gospel.

He expressed worry that the focus on appearance and attire is overshadowing the spiritual message intended in gospel music, leading to a decline in its original purpose.

During the interview, he remarked, “Your attention is on the dress the ladies are wearing more than the message. You’re looking at how they move themselves and it’s so attractive that you lose the message. We are getting less and less of spiritualized sheep doing gospel music and introducing the world.”

The “Most High God” singer also gave examples to support his argument, citing instances where gospel musicians appeared to be more focused on promoting their personal brand rather than God’s work.

“Gifty came here last week,” Akpadie mentioned, referencing a specific incident on Joy Prime. “She was talking about her brand and promoting herself. That’s carnality! There’s an extent to which you promote your work because what you are looking for, God is looking for it for you more than yourself.”

Overall, Akpadie’s comments reflect a broader concern within the gospel music community about maintaining the spiritual essence and authenticity of the genre amidst increasing commercialization and focus on personal image.

  • Ghana is not losing cargo to neighboring countries – GPHA refutes claims

Ghana is not losing cargo to neighboring countries – GPHA refutes claims

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Michael Luguji, has issued a challenge to the business community regarding their assertions that Ghana is losing cargo to ports in neighboring Lome and Abidjan.

In an interview with Joy Business, Luguji urged businesses to provide concrete data supporting these claims.

Contrary to reports from some business associations alleging significant cargo losses at the Tema Port, Luguji emphasised that Ghana remains the preferred port for transit purposes in the sub-region.

He addressed these concerns during a visit by the Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, to the port.

Luguji disputed the claims of cargo diversion and highlighted specific factors influencing businesses’ decisions, such as the direct rail system from Lome Port to Diamond Cement’s factory in Aflao for clinker imports.

“Our research indicates that there are no improvements in cargo movement in Lome Port but it is the import of clinker which is done by Diamond Cement into their factory at Aflao. You know they have a direct rail system from the port into their factory which makes it easier due to their location.

“If you want Diamond Cement to use Tema Port, then it means they have to transport the clinker with trucks through our roads which doesn’t make economic sense”, he explained.

“This is the situation but does not mean that Ghana has lost any business to the neighboring counterpart. We have always asked the business associations to provide relevant data to show that Business A has been importing through Ghana but as a result of the charges or high prices, they have considered using the Lome Port,” Michael Luguji stated.

He explained that utilising Tema Port for such imports would necessitate truck transportation, which is less economically viable.

The Director General stressed the need for data-backed evidence from business associations to substantiate claims of cargo shifts to neighbouring ports.

He also noted the differences in tax regimes between Ghana and its neighbours, emphasising the importance of legal compliance in import processes.

Overall, Luguji’s statements underscored Ghana’s strategic position and continued relevance as a preferred transit hub, urging stakeholders to present factual data in discussions about cargo movement and port operations.

This decision comes after Funny Face appeared before the court facing charges of drunk driving and careless driving.

The incident leading to Funny Face’s arrest occurred on Sunday evening when he allegedly rammed his vehicle into a group of people at Kasoa Kakraba, resulting in injuries to five individuals.

The crash prompted swift police action, leading to Funny Face’s apprehension and subsequent legal proceedings.

During the court hearing, the prosecution argued that Funny Face’s reckless actions endangered the lives of innocent bystanders and warranted a thorough investigation.

The comedian’s legal team, however, pleaded for leniency, citing his status as a public figure and expressing remorse on behalf of their client.

American rapper Diddy’s home raided by US Homeland Security in connection with sex trafficking allegations

Federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security recently conducted raids on two residences owned by renowned hip-hop artist Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The targeted properties were located in Los Angeles and Miami.

The investigation, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents based in New York, is linked to a lawsuit filed against Combs last year by a former girlfriend, accusing him of involvement in sex trafficking.

While details of the investigation were not disclosed by HSI, the agency has the authority to probe various illegal activities, including sex trafficking, money laundering, and contraband trafficking.

The lawsuit against Combs, filed in federal court in Manhattan by R&B vocalist Cassandra Ventura, alleged physical abuse, sexual slavery, and rape during their decade-long professional and romantic relationship.

The legal action cited violations of federal, New York state, and California laws related to sex and human trafficking.

Following Ventura’s lawsuit, Combs and Ventura settled the case privately, with Combs maintaining his innocence and denouncing the accusations as attempts to extort money.

The legal actions against Combs have opened the door to additional lawsuits alleging sexual assault and rape, including a recent civil complaint accusing him of participating in the gang rape of a teenager two decades ago.

The raids on Combs’s properties in Los Angeles and Miami were covered by local media, with footage showing law enforcement officers carrying out searches and detaining individuals.

The investigations and outcomes of the raids are currently ongoing.

  • Ghana cedi will remain relatively stable against the US dollar going forward – Governor

Ghana cedi will remain relatively stable against the US dollar going forward – Governor

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG), Dr. Ernest Addison expressed optimism regarding the stability of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar in the near future.

He attributed this confidence to the robust reserves accumulated by the Bank of Ghana and the implementation of fresh monetary measures along with stringent enforcement of foreign exchange regulations.

Dr. Addison emphasised that the Bank of Ghana’s reserves had surpassed $6.0 billion, marking a significant improvement in the factors that previously exerted pressure on the cedi.

“This is based some strong reserves that the Bank of Ghana has built over the past months to support the cedi, some fresh monetary measures being implemented, and strict enforcement of the foreign exchange regulations.

“We are now reporting reserves of more than $6.0 billion, and therefore the underlying factors that caused those pressures in the past have improved greatly”,  Dr. Addison disclosed.

He highlighted increased remittance inflows as well, which are expected to bolster the currency’s performance in the upcoming months.

“We believe that all these developments should give the market some assurance that the cedi’s outlook will remain favourable”.

Addressing concerns about recent challenges faced by the cedi, especially in the first quarter of 2024, Dr. Addison acknowledged a depreciation of about 6.8% against the US dollar.

“These were compounded by delays and uncertainties associated with the second tranche of the cocoa loan inflow and World Bank’s disbursement of budget support”, the Governor added.

However, he noted that measures taken by the central bank throughout 2023 and recent months were beginning to show positive responses.

Despite pressures stemming from the strength of the US dollar in global markets and payments to sectors like energy and corporate, Dr. Addison pointed out mitigating factors such as remittance inflows, mining company contributions, and the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

“Inflows from the World Bank, the tight monetary policy stance, and a weaker US dollar from potential policy rate cuts in the USA are expected to support the relative stability of the Ghana cedi”, he pointed out.

He also mentioned expectations of support from inflows, a tight monetary policy stance, and potential US policy rate cuts affecting the US dollar’s strength.

Dr. Addison discussed the revised cash reserve ratio and emphasized the central bank’s commitment to strict enforcement of foreign exchange regulations as measures to uphold the cedi’s performance in the upcoming weeks.

  • My new tax reforms are carefully thought through to help growth of indigenous businesses – Bawumia

My new tax reforms are carefully thought through to help growth of indigenous businesses – Bawumia

The Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,  engaged in a fruitful dialogue with the Council of Indigenous Business Association of Ghana (CIBA), emphasising the careful design of his new tax reforms to bolster business growth, particularly for indigenous enterprises.

In his ongoing efforts to underscore his policies following a significant policy address last month, Dr. Bawumia interacted extensively with CIBA members, the largest informal business group in the nation, on Monday, March 25, in Accra.

Central to the discussion were Dr. Bawumia’s proposed tax reforms, including a tax amnesty slated for introduction in 2025 under a potential Bawumia administration, alongside a streamlined flat tax rate.

These measures, he explained, are intended to simplify tax processes for businesses, promoting their competitiveness and facilitating self-calculation and filing.

“The new tax reforms I have outlined, including the flat tax rate will make the tax system transparent and easy to calculate. For instance, if your tax is based on a simple percentage of your profit, you can easily calculate what you have to pay yourself and file your own tax. You don’t have to wait for any tax official to come to you and find the process difficult to understand.

“If the tax rate is flat, it will be more transparent, simple and easy to understand. This is what many businesses need to help them and also to make it very competitive for them. Many businesses and individuals continue to complain about the tax system, including the harassment they face. It is because the process is not transparent and you feel overburdened. We want to correct this and help your businesses grow,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He further elaborated on plans to stabilise import duties’ exchange rates and implement flat import duties on containers, ensuring predictability and fairness while safeguarding Ghana’s competitive edge in trade vis-à-vis neighbouring countries like Togo.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his commitment to abolishing the e-levy tax, underscoring its potential to further energise businesses and advance the country’s transition towards a cashless economy.

The interactive session with CIBA, representing a diverse range of sectors including garages, bars, beauty services, electronics, tailoring, and more, showcased Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to engaging stakeholders and crafting policies tailored to enhance the growth and competitiveness of indigenous businesses in Ghana.

A viral video circulating on social media has ignited debate over the lack of employment opportunities in the country, as showcased by the frustration of a user identified as X.

The video captures the X user expressing dismay at the scarcity of jobs and highlights a group of youth known as the ‘Buzstopboys,’ who have taken it upon themselves to clean up Accra’s city spaces through grassroots efforts.

  • Anti-LGBTQ+ bill: It’s personal for Sam George; total abuse of power – Pappy Kojo

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill: It’s personal for Sam George; total abuse of power – Pappy Kojo

Ghanaian rapper Pappy Kojo has stepped into the controversy surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, criticizing Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-PramPram Sam George for abuse of power.

In a recent interview, Pappy Kojo expressed strong sentiments against the bill, shedding light on its potential repercussions and raising concerns about human rights violations.

The bill, officially known as the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, has sparked widespread debate and condemnation both locally and internationally.

Its provisions include criminalising LGBTQ+ advocacy and activities, with penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment.

Pappy Kojo, known for his outspoken views on social issues, didn’t hold back in his criticism.

He called the bill a “total abuse of power” and emphasised the personal nature of the issue for Sam George, who has been one of the bill’s staunchest advocates.

Kojo suggested that personal motivations might be clouding the judgement of those pushing for the bill, leading to what he perceives as a violation of basic human rights.

Reacting to Sam George spearheading the bill , Pappy Kojo stated, “I also think it’s just personal to Sam George. If you’re in power, you can pretty much do whatever you want. So I think that’s what he’s doing.”

His remarks echoed the sentiments of many activists and organizations that have condemned the bill as discriminatory and regressive.

Sam George, the MP at the centre of Pappy Kojo’s criticism, has been a vocal proponent of the bill, arguing that it is necessary to uphold Ghanaian cultural values and protect the family unit.

Touching on broader implications, Pappy Kojo emphasised the need to shield children from exposure to intimate matters, regardless of sexual orientation.

He stressed, “Intimate matters shouldn’t be exposed to kids. Whether heterosexual or homosexual, they shouldn’t be exposed to kids.”

However, critics like Kojo argue that such legislation infringes on individual freedoms and perpetuates discrimination and prejudice.
The debate over the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill continues to divide opinion in Ghana, with proponents citing traditional values and moral concerns while opponents emphasise human rights and inclusivity.

Pappy Kojo’s intervention adds a prominent voice to the discourse, drawing attention to the personal and ethical dimensions of the contentious legislation.

Ghanaian rapper Jason Gaisie known popularly as Pappy Kojo has taken a firm stance against the proposed anti-LGBT+ Bill awaiting presidential assent, emphasizing the importance of protecting human rights.

In a recent episode of the “If More, Let’s Divide” podcast, he criticised the idea of imprisoning individuals based on their sexual orientation, calling it a violation of basic human rights.

Expressing his disagreement with the Bill, Pappy Kojo stated, “I feel like it’s a reach for someone to be in jail for, like, three years just for being who they are. I think it’s mad. LGBT is just straight human rights. Putting people in jail for their sexual preference, for three to five years, is mad.”

He also raised concerns about personal biases influencing support for the Bill, particularly mentioning known proponent Sam George.

Pappy Kojo remarked, “I also think it’s just personal to Sam George. If you’re in power, you can pretty much do whatever you want. So I think that’s what he’s doing.”

Highlighting the broader implications, Pappy Kojo stressed the need to shield children from exposure to intimate matters, regardless of sexual orientation.

Lydia Forson mocks Dormaahene’s decision to forfeit his salary in support for antiLGBTQ+bill

A recent viral video has captured Dormaahene’s bold assertion that he would relinquish his salary if President Akufo-Addo approves the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

This declaration has sparked widespread debate and attention on social media platforms.

The bill in question has been a subject of heated controversy following Parliament’s decision to pass it, awaiting the President’s approval.

However, President Akufo-Addo has delayed assenting to the bill, citing ongoing legal challenges against Parliament’s decision.

President Akufo-Addo emphasised that the approval process should be halted until the Supreme Court delivers a verdict on the matter.

This move has further intensified discussions and reactions across the nation.

Dormaahene, also known as Osagyefo ƆseadeƐyƆ Dr Agyemang Badu, serves as both a High Court Judge and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.

During the Sumaman Akwantukɛse Festival at Suma Ahenkuro over the weekend, he expressed his readiness to sacrifice his judicial salary in solidarity with Ghana’s stance on the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

“I am prepared to forfeit my salary should President Akufo-Addo pass the anti-LGBTQ+ bill. Ghana can thrive independently,” Dormaahene declared.

In response to Dormaahene’s statement, a popular Ghanaian actress Lydia Foron reacted with a laughing emoji, highlighting the diverse range of opinions surrounding this contentious issue.

Teacher unions strike: Impact of strike hits vendors ; sales on the low

Three teacher unions representing pre-tertiary level educators in Ghana are resolute in their industrial action, planning to convene with the National Labour Commission to advocate for their demands.

This decision follows the abrupt cancellation of a scheduled meeting with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, further escalating the standoff and intensifying the crisis within the education sector.

The repercussions of the strike are reverberating across schools nationwide.

While some teachers have reported for duty at institutions like the Presbyterian Cluster of Schools in Osu, Osu Girls Basic School, and St Peters Catholic Basic School Osu, classrooms at Nima Cluster of Schools remain shuttered, emblematic of the ongoing struggle between educators and authorities.

In the midst of this turmoil, vendors in Osu area schools are experiencing a downturn, with reports of reduced sales exacerbating the challenges faced by an already strained education system.

The steadfastness of the teacher unions adds to the complexity, as Isaac Baah, the Head of Compensation and Benefits for the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), asserts that they will not succumb to any pressure to end the strike.

  • Akufo-Addo’s delay in assenting to Anti-LGBTQ+ bill not justified – Catholic Bishops

Akufo-Addo’s delay in assenting to Anti-LGBTQ+ bill not justified – Catholic Bishops

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to work together in ensuring the implementation of the people’s will regarding the contentious Human Sexual Rights and Ghana Family Values Bill, commonly known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Currently, a deadlock exists over the transmission of the Bill from Parliament to the Presidency.

The President halted the transmission of the anti-gay bill, while the Speaker of Parliament suspended the approval of new ministerial nominees citing a court case.

This impasse has left many Ghanaians disheartened, questioning why two branches of the government cannot collaborate to protect the country’s values and cultural systems.

In a recent media interview, Reverend Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, stressed the importance of both the Executive and Legislature collaborating in the public interest. He noted that the Bill enjoys majority support among Ghanaians and urged President Akufo-Addo to respect the decision of the people as expressed by their representatives in Parliament.

“We’re surprised that at this time the President has not signed it yet. People can go and make their cases anywhere, anytime, but as to whether the President should listen to Supreme Court orders or individual presentations before he assents or not, we don’t know if the law provides for that,” Reverend Gyamfi stated.

“When this law has come from the people and it has been passed by Parliament, I do not find any basis for the President to stand against it and say he will not assent to the Bill,” he added.

“We call on them to follow what the law and Constitution provide because they are causing concern for all of us. This situation is unprecedented, which is why we are unsure if there’s a provision for it. If there’s no provision, why should the President delay?” Reverend Gyamfi questioned further.

  • I’ll uphold a higher level of accountability to Ghanaians than Mahama – Bawumia

I’ll uphold a higher level of accountability to Ghanaians than Mahama – Bawumia

The ruling New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to uphold a superior level of accountability to the Ghanaian people compared to his main opponent, John Mahama.

Dr. Bawumia argued that Mr. Mahama would not be as accountable since he would not seek re-election, whereas he, as a first-time presidential candidate, expressed his dedication to being more accountable if elected, citing the opportunity to seek re-election and face the electorate again.

“Apart from my proven track record as vice-president, hard work, credibility and vision for the future of Ghana, another reason I should be voted for is that I will be more accountable to the people of Ghana than John Mahama.

“As president, I will be more accountable because I will have another opportunity to seek the people’s mandate after 2024. Mahama has just one term and will not come back to Ghanaians to seek re-elections so he will not be accountable,” Dr Bawumia said.

He further emphasised his commitment to accountability by highlighting that as president, he would have another chance to seek the people’s mandate after 2024, unlike Mahama who only has one term.

Dr. Bawumia stressed the significance of electing a leader with credibility and a proven record in addressing challenges and fighting corruption, asserting his candidacy as a problem solver and a staunch advocate against corruption based on his policies as Vice President.

“Ghana needs problem solvers, generational thinkers and people with innovative ideas.

“I am a problem solver and a generational thinker with innovative ideas. I have a solid track record as vice-president to prove it,” he added.

  • I met Chioma at a time when I was ‘broke’ – Davido

I met Chioma at a time when I was ‘broke’ – Davido

Nigerian music star David Adedeji Adeleke known popularly as Davido has revealed insights into his relationship with his wife, Chioma Avril Rowland, sharing that they met during a period when he wasn’t financially stable.

Unlike the common narrative of struggling to find authentic love amidst fame, Davido considers himself fortunate to have connected with Chioma before his rise to prominence.

Reflecting on his early days, Davido expressed the significance of meeting Chioma during a time of financial challenge.

He believes that encountering her before achieving fame was crucial, as it allowed their relationship to blossom without the complications of wealth and status.

Davido highlighted the difficulty he might have faced in considering marriage later on, suspecting that women might be drawn to him solely for his success.

He emphasised the joy of having a close circle of friends who knew him before his fame, contrasting it with the notion of forming relationships with new acquaintances after becoming successful.

“I have a friend, anytime I am on the phone with my wife, he would say he has everything in the world, but a wife is what he is missing. I met my wife before I had money, but I was telling myself if I didn’t meet her before then and now I am single, and I meet a girl, it wouldn’t be the same. I would feel the lady is talking to me because I am Davido and I have money.

“My success is when I see people around who were there when I had nothing and they see me now, that’s the feeling, not like when you blow up and start hanging out with a new set of people. You need to keep the people that were there with you since grinding,” Davido stated.

According to Davido, the genuine support and companionship of those who witnessed his journey from the beginning hold greater value than superficial connections based on wealth.

Chioma, corroborating their story, mentioned that they first crossed paths while they were both in school.

Their introduction came through a mutual friend who was dating one of Davido’s acquaintances, marking the beginning of their enduring relationship.
