16-year-old girl allegedly steals baby during church service in Asante Akyem Agogo

Members of the Church of Pentecost in Asante Akyem Agogo, Ashanti region, were left stunned when a 16-year-old girl reportedly snatched a baby during a church service.

The accused, Emelia Yendulom, allegedly deceived the baby‘s grandmother by claiming the mother needed to breastfeed him.

The incident took place during a naming ceremony at the church on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Emelia vanished with the baby, causing immense distress to the parents.

It was later discovered that she had taken the child to her family’s residence in Agogo Zongo, pretending to be the mother.

Suspicions arose due to Emelia’s history of mental health issues and ongoing treatment at a prayer camp in Ananekrom.

Concerned family members verified the situation with the prayer camp and realized Emelia’s deception. They promptly took her and the baby to the police, resulting in her arrest.

The mother, who had already reported the incident to the police, confirmed the child’s identity.

While the police acknowledge Emelia’s pattern of baby theft, her mental health condition complicates potential legal action.

Currently, both the suspect and the baby’s grandmother are cooperating with the police investigation.

  • 5 things you should never tell a pregnant woman

5 things you should never tell a pregnant woman

Communities are uniting to highlight the importance of treating pregnant women with respect during this critical stage of life, in an effort to foster empathy and compassion for them.

The initiative stems from the recognition that pregnant women often face insensitive comments and actions that can be hurtful. From unwanted belly touches to unsolicited advice, these behaviors can contribute to unnecessary stress and discomfort for expectant mothers.

One of the key messages being emphasised is the importance of consent when it comes to touching a pregnant woman’s belly.

Many cultures consider it taboo or intrusive to touch a pregnant woman’s stomach without permission, highlighting the need for awareness and respect for personal boundaries.

Moreover, the campaign is addressing the harmful practice of commenting on a pregnant woman’s appearance, particularly regarding weight or the absence of a “pregnancy glow.”

Such remarks can be demoralising and add to the physical and emotional challenges that many women experience during pregnancy.

Additionally, the campaign advocates for refraining from sharing negative birth or parenting experiences with expectant mothers.

Instead, the focus is on providing support, encouragement, and reassurance to help alleviate any anxieties they may have about childbirth and motherhood.

Furthermore, the community is raising awareness about the stigma and superstitions associated with asking about due dates. Many cultures view such inquiries as intrusive or even ominous, emphasising the need for sensitivity and mindfulness in conversations with pregnant women.
Overall, the goal of this initiative is to foster a culture of empathy, courtesy, and consideration towards pregnant women, recognizing the unique challenges they face and the importance of providing a supportive and respectful environment during this significant period of their lives.

  • Akufo-Addo yet to release KPMG audit report on GRA/SML deal a month after deadline

Akufo-Addo yet to release KPMG audit report on GRA/SML deal a month after deadline

KPMG was set to unveil its audit findings on the transaction involving the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Ltd. (SML) to President Akufo-Addo today, Friday, February 23.

Originally due on Tuesday, January 16, the deadline was extended to accommodate KPMG’s request, as confirmed by the President’s office.

A statement released on Wednesday, January 24, by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the presidency, specified that “KPMG is to submit its final report no later than Friday, 23rd February 2024.”

The scrutiny surrounding the transaction escalated following an investigative piece by the Fourth Estate in December 2023, implicating SML, the GRA, and the Ministry of Finance.

The report raised concerns about a purported 10-year contract worth $100 million annually awarded by the GRA to SML, hinting at potential irregularities.

In response, SML denied the decade-long contract, asserting that it had secured a 5-year agreement instead.

On December 20, 2023, the GRA issued a statement affirming that they had followed proper procedures in engaging SML’s services.

However, on January 2, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo directed SML to suspend its ongoing revenue assurance operations and ordered an immediate audit of the contract with GRA and the Ministry of Finance, assigning KPMG the responsibility.

In light of these developments, SML expressed optimism that the audit results would bring clarity and accuracy regarding its operations.

It is however more than a month, the President has yet to make the findings public.

  • I offered a land for Fantasy Dome relocation but it wasn’t enough – Okraku-Mantey

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey has addressed the recent demolition of the Fantasy Dome at the Trade Fair site, expressing his concerns and actions taken regarding the matter.

Speaking at the African Music Business Summit on Friday, March 22, 2024, Okraku-Mantey mentioned that he was still gathering information about the demolition incident.

He shared that he had been assisting Leslie Quaynor, the CEO of Fantasy Entertainment, in finding a new location for his tent before the demolition occurred.

Okraku-Mantey stated, “I am still probing. I am asking the legitimate question, why it went like that? You know that is under the Ministry of Trade. Because Leslie came to me personally that he wanted land to move the Dome.”

He continued, “I gave him a place at the National Museum. Unfortunately, the Dome is way too big that after getting a place to fix it, they will struggle with the car park. That is why he didn’t take our land. So he took some steps to move.”

The Fantasy Dome, with a capacity of 20,000 seats, was demolished on Saturday, March 16, 2024, by the Ghana Trade Fair Company Limited. Dr. Agnes Adu, the CEO of the Trade Fair, explained that the action was taken after numerous notices were given to Leslie Quaynor to vacate the leased premises for a redevelopment project, in accordance with their tenancy agreement.

Dr. Adu stated, “The Fantasy Dome was the lone person holding out and refusing to move and after 15 months of consistently giving notices to the owners of the Fantasy Dome, the owners and the developers we had no choice but to dismantle so that we can continue with the work.”

Leslie Quaynor, in response, mentioned that his lease had ended, and he was in the process of relocating the dome to another venue.

He requested an extension, which was denied by the Trade Fair. He then sought legal measures to prevent the demolition, but the action proceeded.

The demolition of the Fantasy Dome has stirred controversy and raised concerns about its impact on both Leslie Quaynor’s business and the entertainment industry, which relies on such event centers for its growth and development.

Video: Mills paved way for Mahama; anything can happen – Kwesi Ahwoi to Prof. Jane Naana

Celebrations for Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman‘s renomination recently took an unexpected turn at the Ahwoi’s office on Church Street, Labone, sparking debate within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The planned celebration rapidly took a turn for the worse when Kwesi Ahwoi, a prominent member of the NDC and a former interior minister, provoked criticism from the party’s Mahama wing.

The 77-year-old Ahwoi’s remarks, implying a potential repetition of the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ fate with John Dramani Mahama if the NDC wins the presidential election in December 2024, left many guests shocked and led to some leaving prematurely.

During the celebration, Ahwoi proposed a toast to Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, expressing confidence in her potential to become Ghana’s first female Vice President.

However, his subsequent comments advising her to be prepared for the presidency, citing the unexpected turn of events that led to John Mahama assuming the presidency after President Mills’ passing, stirred controversy.

Ahwoi’s statement, captured in a viral video, suggested that unforeseen circumstances could lead to leadership changes within the party, fueling speculation on social media about the health of former President John Mahama, who is gearing up for his fourth presidential contest in December.

“John Mahama was not ready to be president at the time but nature schemed things in such a way that President Mills had to give way to John Mahama. Anything can happen, so Naana, be ever prepared; as your motto says, anything can happen and you can become the President of the Republic of Ghana,” Kwesi Ahwoi said, in a video that has since gone viral.

The Ahwoi family’s historical influence within the NDC, particularly their role in President Rawlings’ selection of Prof Mills as his running mate in 1996, adds weight to Kwesi Ahwoi’s remarks and the ongoing debate within the party regarding its future leadership.

The endorsement of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman’s candidacy by the Ahwoi brothers underscores a strategic move within the NDC, aiming for continuity and stability in leadership.

However, Ahwoi’s comments have ignited discussions about succession planning and the potential dynamics within the party should John Mahama secure victory in the upcoming election.

As the NDC braces for a critical electoral battle in 2024, Ahwoi’s controversial remarks serve as a reminder of the complex dynamics shaping the party’s internal politics and the challenges ahead in navigating its leadership transitions.

Kenya to form prayer strategy team to pray for police officers deployed to Haiti

Kenya’s First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto, has revealed plans for a prayer strategy team to support Kenyan police officers embarking on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

This announcement came during the launch of the ‘Fourth Man’ EP by 1005 Songs & More at Weston Hotel on Saturday.

“We have come together to say we want to form a prayer strategy, and we would like you to join us in praying for this great country of Haiti because we know the Lord can transform Haiti. We have seen what God has done for the nation of Kenya, and we believe God can do the same for nations of the world.

She urged everyone to join in prayer for Haiti, expressing faith in God’s transformative power for nations.

Accra Court orders arrest of private businessman for causing €2.37 million financial loss to the state

The High Court in Accra has taken a decisive step in the ongoing trial involving a private businessman, Richard Jakpa, standing trial with former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Ato Forson.

The two have been accused of causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in a deal to purchase 200 ambulances for the country between 2014 and 2016.

Richard Jakpa was notably absent during the recent court session, where he was expected to continue his testimony after dismissing his lawyer and choosing to represent himself.

His absence prompted Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge with additional responsibilities as a High Court judge, to issue the bench warrant for his arrest.

“Unfortunately Jakpa dispensed with his lawyer and is yet to get a new one

“We will err on the side of caution and issue a warrant for the arrest of the accused,” the judge said.

Despite a document purporting to be a medical excuse sent to the court clerk via WhatsApp, the judge noted that it lacked sufficient detail about Jakpa’s condition, leading to the decision to issue the warrant.

The charges against Jakpa and Dr. Forson include willfully causing financial loss to the state, abetment to willfully causing financial loss to the state, contravention of the Public Procurement Act, and intentionally misapplying public property.

The case has been adjourned to Tuesday, March 26, this year, pending Jakpa’s arrest and further proceedings.

According to the Attorney General’s facts accompanying the charge sheet, the scandal traces back to 2009 when then-President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills announced plans to purchase new ambulances to enhance the National Ambulance Service’s operations.

Jakpa, acting as a local representative of Big Sea General Trading Limited based in Dubai, approached the Ministry of Health with a financing proposal from Stanbic Bank for the supply of 200 ambulances to the government.

Parliament approved the financing agreement between the government and Stanbic Bank.

The facts also reveal that approvals were sought and obtained for single-sourcing Big Sea for the ambulance supply.

However, subsequent investigations found that 30 of the ambulances purchased at a cost of €2.37 million did not meet the required specifications and were deemed “not fit for purpose.” This discrepancy has led to the serious legal proceedings now underway.

Wrongful E-Levy charges on some electronic transactions will be rectified – GRA

Reacting to the recent internet connectivity issues leading to wrongful charging of E-Levy on electronic transactions, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has assured the public of corrective measures.

Acknowledging the impact of internet outages on transaction routing to the Electronic Transfer Levy Management and Assurance System (ELMAS), GRA announced steps to address the situation in a press release dated March 22.

The key measures implemented by GRA include:

Temporary Procedures for Delayed Transactions: GRA has established temporary procedures for processing “Offline Transactions” caused by internet outages. These procedures ensure that E-Levy is charged only on applicable transactions, even if there is a delay in real-time routing to ELMAS.

Refunding Wrongful Charges: Recognizing that the outage may have resulted in wrongful E-Levy deductions, GRA is collaborating with Charging Entities to facilitate the reimbursement process for affected transactions. Charging Entities will be responsible for reimbursing customers for any incorrectly applied E-Levy charges once GRA completes its refund procedures.

For further information and clarification, individuals can reach out via email to elevyinfo@qra.gov.qh.

The GRA’s proactive steps aim to ensure a seamless E-Levy collection process and address any issues arising from the recent disruptions in internet connectivity.

    AntiLGBTQ+bill: Akufo-Addo is Ghana’s problem – Dr. Otchere-Ankrah

A governance lecturer at Central University, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah has strongly criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his delay in assenting to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

The bill, initially named the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Act, aims to prohibit LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana and uphold Ghanaian family values and sexual rights.

President Akufo-Addo cited pending Supreme Court cases related to the bill as his reason for not signing it into law.

“I think it will serve little purpose to go, at this stage, into the details of the origin of this proposed law, which is yet to reach my desk. But, suffice it to say, that I have learnt that, today, a challenge has been mounted at the Supreme Court by a concerned citizen to the constitutionality of the proposed legislation.

“In the circumstances, it would be, as well, for all of us to hold our hands, and await the decision of the Court before any action is taken. The operation of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in our country,” a statement dated March 4, 2024 said.

In a statement dated March 4, 2024, he urged everyone to await the court’s decision before taking further action.

“It is the understanding of this Office that both applications have also been duly served on Parliament. Therefore, it would be improper for you to transmit the Bill to the President and equally improper for this Office to receive the Bill until the Supreme Court determines the matters raised in the suits…In the circumstances, you are kindly requested to cease and desist from transmitting the Bill to the President until the matters before the Supreme Court are resolved,” parts of the letter read.

Additionally, the president sent a letter to Parliament requesting them to refrain from transmitting the bill to him due to pending applications for injunctions in the Supreme Court.

Expressing his disappointment on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah criticized the president, asserting that he is currently a problem for Ghana.

He acknowledged the president’s past contributions but emphasized his discontent with the current situation, calling it a concerning issue for the nation.

“President Akufo-Addo has done some things for Ghana but at this point, he is the problem…I’m not comfortable with his actions as President…I respect him as president, but at this point, he is our problem,” he fumed.

Atik Mohammed advised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take action despite a delay in assent due to a Supreme Court challenge.

The bill, aimed at curbing homosexual practices with penalties of six months to five years imprisonment for offenders, is awaiting the President’s assent to become law.

However, President Akufo-Addo has cited an ongoing legal challenge in the Supreme Court as the reason for postponing his assent.

The President emphasized the need to await the court’s decision before making any further move, asserting, “The operation of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in our country.”

Additionally, the Office of the President has written to Parliament, advising them not to transmit the bill for assent until the Supreme Court addresses the pending legal matters.

The letter highlighted two applications for an order of interlocutory injunction filed in the Supreme Court, urging Parliament to refrain from transmitting the bill until the court reaches a final determination.

Atik Mohammed reacted to the President’s lack of action by asserting that the President must take a proactive stance, or else the New Patriotic Party’s prospects in the upcoming 2024 elections will be jeopardised.

“Akufo-Addo should take passing of the antiLDBTQ+ bill seriously or the chances of the NPP winning the 2024 elections will be impossible, he must pass the bill inorder not to have any repercussions,” Atik Mohammed stated.

Atik Mohammed’s caution comes amidst a complex legal landscape surrounding the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, underscoring the ongoing debate and legal challenges surrounding the legislation.

Akufo-Addo’s family set the pace for homosexuality practice in Ghana- Malik Basintale alleges

The Deputy Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has made a controversial claim suggesting that the Akufo-Addo family played a role in introducing homosexuality to Ghana.

Basintale stated that Paul Danquah, who is said to be Akufo-Addo’s cousin and the son of the esteemed J.B. Danquah was internationally known for his homosexuality.

According to Basintale, Danquah was married to a British man named Peter Pollock, and the couple openly displayed their queer lifestyle around the world.

Basintale argued that this is evidence of the Addo-Danquah family not only introducing homosexuality to Africa but also influencing its global presence.

“In the whole world, Nana Addo’s family began the homosexuality trend. There is an individual called Paul Danquah he is a part of Akufo Addo’s family, the first to be identified as gay, he married a guy called Peter Pollock and was suspended from UK as a result of their open relationship to Australia, you can research to find out ,” Malik Basintale stated.

Paul Danquah, born Joseph Paul Walcott (25 May 1925 – 13 August 2015), was a British film actor, known particularly for his role in the film ‘A Taste of Honey’ (1961), adapted from the 1958 play of the same name written by Shelagh Delaney.

He later became a barrister and a bank consultant.

His father was the Ghanaian statesman J. B. Danquah.

  • Ghana’s public debt reached GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) at the end of 2023 – BOG

Ghana’s public debt reached GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) at the end of 2023 – BOG

The Bank of Ghana‘s (BOG) March 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data has revealed that Ghana‘s public debt has soared to GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) by the end of 2024.

This marks an increase of GH¢42.7 billion from September 2023 to December 2023, following a previous decline of ¢14.2 billion between June 2023 and September 2023, when it stood at ¢567.3 billion ($51.0 billion).

The current debt level accounts for 72.5% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), indicating that Ghana’s debt situation remains challenging despite the completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.

The rise in debt is attributed to a GH¢19.1 billion increase in domestic debt and a GH¢23.6 billion increase in external debt, primarily due to the depreciation of the cedi.

According to the Central Bank’s data, the external component of the total public debt was $30.1 billion (¢350.3 billion) in December 2023, representing 41.6% of GDP.

Meanwhile, domestic debt stood at ¢259.7 billion, accounting for about 30.1% of GDP.

The report, however, lacks information on the financial sector resolution debt and other liabilities like the energy sector debt.

Despite these challenges, the government’s fiscal operations remained on target, with the deficit-to-GDP ratio standing at 3.3% in December 2023, down from 8.3% in December 2022.

Additionally, there was a surplus of 0.4% of GDP in the primary balance in December 2023.

Ghana had suspended interest payments on loans to external creditors in December 2022 amid economic difficulties and is currently in negotiations with bondholders after reaching a deal with bilateral creditors in January 2024.
