Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, known asPortable, has been granted bail of âŠ2 million by a magistrate court in Ogun State after being charged with assaulting government officials.
Portable was arrested for allegedly leading a group of men to attack three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development during an operation in Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu, Ota. The officials were injured in the incident.
After the attack, Portable went into hiding but was later declared wanted by the police. He eventually turned himself in on February 18, 2025, at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba, before being taken to Ogun State for trial.
In court, Portable was charged with assault, causing harm, and interfering with government work. He pleaded not guilty.
The court granted him bail of âŠ2 million with two sureties. He will remain in custody until he meets the bail conditions.

Government is set to recruit 100 additional staff for various passport centresacross the country to support the implementation of the 24-hour passport application service, which is expected to roll out this year.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made this known during a working visit to some passport centres following his assumption of office.
Speaking to the media on February 19 at the Passport Headquarters in Accra, the Minister announced that provisions for the new staff are being made in the 2025 budget, which is scheduled to be presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on March 11.
âWe are making provision in our budget for 2025 to recruit more staff. We anticipate that we may need about 100 more. That is what our director of passport, based on their analysis, has recommended. When you cut down the waiting time from three, four, five weeks to less than a weekâonce you do a 24-hour shiftâit should be easy to meet those targets,â he stated.
Currently, the Ghana Passport Office is reported to have around 300 staff members. The planned recruitment of 100 more personnel aims to reduce waiting times, expedite passport delivery, and support the governmentâs flagship 24-hour economy initiative as part of its reset agenda.
Mr. Ablakwa urged passport office staff to prepare for extended working hours, including day, night, and dawn shifts, in alignment with the governmentâs 24-hour economy strategy.
âYou have also heard about the major reforms we want to implement. We want the Passport Administration in our country to become a 24-hour operation. This year [2025], you need to get ready. Weâre going to run three shifts. We want to cut down the waiting time for passports,â he emphasized.
The Minister further reiterated that a key objective of the reform is to ensure that applicants receive their passports within a week of application.
âWe believe that within a week, it should be possible to get a Ghanaian passport when you apply for it. The 24-hour economy intervention weâre introducing will address that,â he added.
Additionally, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed plans to introduce chip-embedded passports and integrate passport data with the National Identification Authority (NIA) system to streamline applicant verification.

A Spanish court has found Luis Rubiales, the former president of Spainâs football federation, guilty of sexually assaulting footballer Jenni Hermoso by kissing her without consent after the 2023 Womenâs World Cup final.

A Spanish court has cleared Luis Rubiales of coercion charges related to his attempt to downplay the kiss he gave Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 Women’s World Cup awards ceremony in Sydney.

Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has criticized Communications Minister, Sam George, over the recent shutdown of seven radio stations, describing the move as unconstitutional.
This comes after the minister, in a statement, directed the National Communications Authority (NCA) to close down the stations, citing their operation without valid frequency authorizations and security concerns.
According to the directive, six of the affected stations were operating without valid licenses, while oneâGumah FM in Bawkuâwas shut down due to security reasons.
Reacting to this development in a statement issued on February 19, 2025, the MFWA accused the Communications Ministry of acting unconstitutionally by shutting down the stations without consulting major stakeholders, particularly the independent National Media Commission (NMC).
The MFWA acknowledged that, while security concerns regarding Gumah FM may be valid due to its broadcast content, it is illegitimate for a tribunal made up of partisan political figuresâsuch as the sector minister, the regional minister, the director general of the NCA, and the national security coordinatorâto act as both complainants and decision-makers in the matter.
While recognizing that expert advice may have informed the decision to close the affected stations, the MFWA insists that such intelligence should be submitted to the NMC for review and a final verdict.
âEven if the decision was based on intelligence reports, the facts and evidence must be presented before the NMC, which should be the body to recommend a shutdown if necessary,â the statement emphasized.
As a reminder to the government, the MFWA referenced Section 2(9) of the NCA Act 775, which mandates the NCA to âpay particular attention to the provisions of Chapter 12 of the Constitution.
Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana focuses on the freedom and independence of the media, underscoring the need for a free and responsible press while protecting it from government interference.
In light of these concerns, the MFWA has advised the government to pause, reflect, and consult the NMC before taking any action to sanction a broadcast station, particularly over content-related concerns.
Furthermore, the organization advocates for a broader dialogue leading to legal reforms that would grant the independent National Media Commission the authority to approve broadcast license applications and recommend appropriate sanctions for licensing violations.
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over what he describes as undemocratic actions by the President John Mahama led government
In a strongly worded statement shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, February 20, 2025, Dr. Bawumia criticized the mass dismissal of public servants employed during the previous administration, as well as recent attacks on journalists and former government officials.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had made a personal commitment to refrain from commenting on governance issues to give the new administration the space to settle and implement its policies. However, he now feels compelled to speak out due to recent developments that he believes threaten Ghanaâs democracy.
According to him, the dismissal of individuals who were legally employed under the previous government contradicts the campaign promises of the ruling party, which assured Ghanaians of job creation. He noted that rather than terminating appointments, the government should be focused on creating more employment opportunities.
âIt is ironic that a party which campaigned on the wings of jobs for all Ghanaians is arbitrarily dismissing the same Ghanaians, rendering them jobless, just because a different government employed them,â Dr. Bawumia stated.
He expressed particular concern over the dismissal of directors in public service, stressing that these individuals are professionals and not political figures. He described it as unfortunate that highly qualified individuals are being removed from their positions simply because they are related to or associated with members of the previous government.
Beyond the job dismissals, Dr. Bawumia highlighted increasing attacks on journalists, the use of the military to raid the homes of former government officials, and mob actions against innocent individuals and state institutions. He likened these developments to a military takeover rather than a peaceful democratic transition.

Meanwhile, National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, has filed a lawsuit against the government of Ghana over the mass dismissal of public sector employees.
He argues that the directive issued by the Chief of Staff on February 10, 2025, to annul all appointments and recruitments made after December 7, 2024, is unconstitutional2. He claims that the Chief of Staff lacks the authority to issue such a directive and that it violates Article 191(b) of the 1992 Constitution, which protects public service employees from dismissal without just cause.

Defending the Akufo-Addo administrationâs record,Mr. Ahiagbahexpressed confidence that history will judge the government favourably.

Former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has taken issue with President John Mahama for removing public servants appointed by the previous government.
In a statement, he called on the President to prioritize job creation instead of laying off workers, saying the decision goes against democratic values and campaign promises.
âThe least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,â he said.
He further described the dismissals as ironic and unjust, arguing that even non-political public servants were being targeted for their perceived affiliations.
âIn some of the cases, the only reason for dismissal was that the persons whose livelihoods have been destroyed are known to or related to politicians, as if to suggest that they cannot live independent professional lives, however qualified they are,â he stated.
Dr. Bawumia also raised concerns about what he described as a deteriorating security situation in the country, citing attacks on journalists, military raids on former government officialsâ homes, and violent mob actions against state institutions.
âThis is rather reminiscent of a military takeover and not a peaceful democratic transition,â he bemoaned.
As tensions rise over the mass dismissals, Dr. Bawumia has urged the President to reconsider the decision and lead in a way that benefits all Ghanaians. He stressed that the nation should not return to old political mistakes.
âThere is no reset by repeating or escalating what may have happened in the past,â he stressed.
Calling for the protection of state institutions and constitutional order, he declared, âGhana can do better. Ghana must do better.â
Meanwhile, New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye has filed a lawsuit challenging the dismissals.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, after U.S. and Russian officials held talks in Saudi Arabia, Trump strongly suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was responsible for Russiaâs invasion.
He also brushed aside concerns about Ukraine not being included in discussions aimed at ending the war.

In an opinion poll carried out by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in December, 52 percent of respondents said they trusted Zelenskyy, down 12 percentage points from February.

FormerGFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi says he has no plans to return to football administration, even after his ban is lifted, because of the difficult experience he went through.
FIFA initially banned him for life from all football activities after journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas released an investigative documentary in June 2018.
The documentary exposed alleged corruption in Ghanaian football and showed Nyantakyi accepting $65,000 from an undercover reporter pretending to be a businessman.
Nyantakyi later appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which reduced his ban to 15 years. This sparked rumors that he wanted to return to football administration.
However, in an interview with Kessben TV, the former CAF Vice President said that while he still loves football, he has no interest in coming back.
âAlthough I still have a passion for football, I am not interested in becoming FA President again or taking up any other administrative role. The fear of going through a similar ordeal will always be there,â he stated.
He further explained that even if the ban had not been imposed, his experience after the documentary completely deterred him from considering a return. He described the situation as an attempt on his life.
âHonestly, even if I hadnât been banned, I wouldnât have returned. That experience showed me that they had the power to harm me because it felt like they wanted to kill me. Not many people can survive such an ordeal,â he added.

Four women who say they were sexually abused by social media influencer Andrew Tate have asked the US not to get involved in his case in Romania.
The women are worried because they heard that US officials asked Romania to ease travel restrictions on Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, who have both UK and US nationality. Their lawyer, Matthew Jury, told the BBC that they are confused about why the Trump administration is interfering, but Romania says it is not being pressured by the US.
Tate, 38, and his brother were arrested in Romania three years ago and are facing trial for rape, trafficking minors, and money laundering, which they deny.
In the UK, the brothers are also wanted by police for rape and human trafficking, which they also deny. Their extradition to the UK will be handled after the Romania case is over.
Tate’s representatives had no comment on the new development. The Financial Times reported that US officials mentioned the case to the Romanian government last week, and Trumpâs envoy Richard Grenell followed up over the weekend. A source said the US asked for the brothers’ passports to be returned so they could travel while waiting for their trial.

Premier League club, Bechem United, has offered a GHC100,000 reward for information about the suspect who killed Asante Kotoko fan Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as “Nana Pooley.”
Pooley was stabbed during a Matchday 19 game between Nsoatreman FC and Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.
On Monday, Asante Kotokoâs Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, named a man called Brimah as the suspect. Brimah is currently on the run, and the Ghana Police Service is searching for him.

Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has supported the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths, saying it follows the constitution.
During a press conference on Wednesday, February 19 at the Jubilee House, Ofosu Kwakye explained, âThe laws governing that entity clearly specify who should make the appointment. It states that it is the president, and the president has acted in line with the 1992 constitution.â
He further noted, âSection 236 of the constitution stipulates that, in appointing a person as the registrar, the president must consider the relevant academic qualifications, experience, and knowledge of that person in civil service administration. The registrar shall hold office on the terms and conditions specified in the letter of appointment.â
Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has asked its members to get ready for a nationwide strike starting on Thursday, February 20, 2025. They are protesting because the government did not cancel the appointment and give the job to a civil servant, instead of what they call a politically exposed person.
CLOGSAG had earlier warned of a strike after President John Mahama appointed Mr. Adom Botchway to the position.
In response, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye asked CLOGSAG members to stay calm, explaining that the law says the president is responsible for making such appointments.
He added, âMr Adom Botchway possesses all the necessary experience to take on the role of registrar. CLOGSAG has not questioned his competence for the position; they only claim that he is politically exposed. However, I have just read the law to you, and there is no stipulation that the position must be occupied by a civil servant.â
Mr Ofosu Kwakye continued, âMr Adom Botchway is a highly experienced public servant who previously served as a district chief executive under President John Atta Mills’ administration. He has many years of public service experience and the required academic qualifications to hold this position.â
He emphasised that the government respects CLOGSAGâs views and seeks further dialogue but reiterated that there is no constitutional provision stating that the position must be filled by a civil servant rather than a politically exposed individual.
GFA President Kurt Okraku has told match commissioners that they will lose their jobs if they do not do their work well.
He spoke at a training session for match officials on Tuesday, highlighting the need to improve safety and security in Ghanaâs top football league.
His warning came after the sad death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, also called Pooley, who was stabbed during the teamâs Week 19 match against Nsoatreman FC in Nsoatre.
After this incident, the Ghana Premier League was stopped while the GFA discussed with all 18 clubs how to prevent future violence.
âWeâll be very, very fair in assessing your work. Be honest,â Okraku said during the engagement.
âThose who fall below the line, unfortunately, will leave us. When you hear the discourse in the public space, you would admit that all is not well. And if we have the opportunity to fix what is not right, this is the most opportune time.â
The suspect in Pooleyâs death, known as Brimah, is still on the run. Consequently, A former manager of Asante Kotoko, is offering GHÂą10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the person who killed Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley.
Serebour Boateng announced on Facebook that the reward will be given to anyone whose information helps catch the main suspect in the murder case.
Asante Kotokoâsfirst team will return to training today, but the club has stated that they will not play any official matches until justice is done for their late supporter.
About Pooley’s death
Francis Yaw Frimpong, affectionately known as Nana Pooley, was a passionate supporter of Asante Kotoko. Tragically, he was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, following a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nana Koramansah II Park.
The incident occurred after an on-field altercation among players escalated into the stands, leading to a violent confrontation. Pooley was caught in the chaos and suffered a fatal stab wound to the heart. The autopsy report revealed that the weapon used was about 7.5 cm long, and the cut to his heart was approximately 1.6 cm deep, causing catastrophic internal bleeding.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with the incident, including former Sunyani West MP Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who is also the owner of Nsoatreman FC. The football community has been deeply affected by Pooley’s death, and there have been calls for justice and an end to hooliganism in Ghanaian football.

Swiss Super League club FC Basel has signed Ghanaian defender Daniel Theophilus Asiedu fromBerekum Chelsea.
The 20-year-old has agreed to a one-year contract, with an option to extend for three more years.
Asiedu, who plays as a centre-back, has previously represented Ghana at the U17 (Black Starlets) and U20 (Black Satellites) levels.

A former manager of Asante Kotoko, is offering GHÂą10,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the person who killed Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley.
Serebour Boateng announced on Facebook that the reward will be given to anyone whose information helps catch the main suspect in the murder case.
âAs a former management member of Kotoko, I am offering GHÂą10,000 to anyone who will assist in arresting the killer of Nana Pooley,â he posted on Facebook on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
His promise follows a revelation by Asante Kotokoâs lawyer, Sarfo Duku, that the Ghana Police Service has identified the killer.
Speaking to reporters after a court appearance, Duku disclosed that police documents and statements from suspects all point to a man named Braimah as the individual who fatally stabbed Pooley.
However, he remains at large.
âOne person is still at large. Heâs called Braimah, and according to the police, based on their findings, he is the one who actually stabbed the deceased,â Duku stated.
âIn fact, according to the police, Iâm speaking based on their official report, which is now a public document, all the accused persons have admitted that it was Braimah, who is currently on the run, that stabbed Pooley to death.â
On Sunday, February 16, 2025, Asante Kotoko organized a one-week memorial event for their late supporter.
Francis Yaw Frimpong, affectionately known as Nana Pooley, was a passionate supporter of Asante Kotoko. Tragically, he was fatally stabbed on February 2, 2025, following a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nana Koramansah II Park.
The incident occurred after an on-field altercation among players escalated into the stands, leading to a violent confrontation. Pooley was caught in the chaos and suffered a fatal stab wound to the heart. The autopsy report revealed that the weapon used was about 7.5 cm long, and the cut to his heart was approximately 1.6 cm deep, causing catastrophic internal bleeding.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects in connection with the incident, including former Sunyani West MP Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, who is also the owner of Nsoatreman FC. The football community has been deeply affected by Pooley’s death, and there have been calls for justice and an end to hooliganism in Ghanaian football.
Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has promised that the betting tax will be scrapped during the 2025 budget announcement.

President John Mahama has instructed the Ministry of Finance to pay all outstanding Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP)coupons and set aside funds for future payments using the Sinking Fund.
Following this directive, the Ministry of Finance released GHâ”6.081 billion in cash to DDEP bondholders on Monday, February 17. In addition, GHâ”3.46 billion was credited to bondholdersâ securities accounts as part of a Payment-In-Kind (PIK) arrangement, following the terms of the DDEP agreement.
To improve debt management, the government also deposited GHâ”9.7 billion into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account, also known as the Sinking Fund. This money will help cover the next five DDEP coupon payments scheduled for July and August 2025.
President Mahama assured Ghanaians that his administration remains committed to meeting all DDEP obligations and rebuilding trust in the economy.
He added that the 2025 Budget Statement will introduce new steps to promote responsible financial management, prioritize key expenses, and improve transparency in government spending.
Despite the economic difficulties inherited from the previous government, the administration is working to stabilize the cedi, reduce inflation, and create jobs.
Through careful financial planning, Mahamaâs government aims to restore economic stability and ensure that public funds are used efficiently.

The Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) is an initiative by the Government of Ghana aimed at restructuring the country’s domestic debt to ensure long-term macroeconomic stability.
The DDEP concluded successfully with the issuance and settlement of new bonds, which have now been listed to serve as the new benchmark securities for the fixed income market. Coupon and principal payments on the old bonds resumed on March 13, 2023. S&P Global Ratings acknowledged the completion of the DDEP by upgrading Ghana’s local currency sovereign credit ratings from selective default (SD) to ‘CCC+/C’. The program saw a high participation rate, with the majority of eligible bonds being tendered. The government is now focusing on engaging with external creditors to ensure overall debt sustainability.
An investigation by The Fourth Estate has revealed serious irregularities in the National Service Authority (NSA) payroll, including the name of a 72-year-old Kenyan, Kwame Donkor, who was wrongly listed as a beneficiary.
The investigation found that Donkor was added to the payroll without an official ID card, which is unusual. Instead, a photo was used. However, when The Fourth Estate ran a reverse image search, they discovered that the photo actually belonged to Emmanuel Mutio, a Human Resource Manager at a private IT company in Kenya.
Another shocking finding was that the same name appeared on the payroll 226 times as a registered beneficiary.
The Fourth Estate initially uncovered the issue in November 2024, but the NSA obtained a court order preventing them from publishing the findings. After the court later lifted the injunction, the report was finally released. The investigation examined payroll records from 2017 to 2023, as well as the 2024 national service year.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Kwaku Krobea Asante, Manager of the Independent Journalism Project under the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), described the findings as alarming.
He noted that the payroll included names of people over 80 or 90 years old, along with fake index numbers, raising concerns about widespread fraud.
“Ghost names in the sense that what the NSA tells us as the number of personnel is different from what they have in their data. This data, we believe, eventually makes its way into the payroll and gets paid. Now, the government has confirmed this.”
“Beyond that, we see how they do thisâhow they pack the payroll with ghost names, which is what the story is trying to expose. How they use over-age individuals, some as old as 80 or 90 years, to falsify records. How they create fake index numbers in the name of universities to justify these names.”
“Funny names keep appearingâa single name could be repeated 226 times. Such a person supposedly completed the same university, studied the same program, in the same year, and was deployed multiple times. A lot of oddities in the data suggest that these entries were deliberately manipulated.”
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the presidentâs spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, a recent headcount of national service personnel revealed possible ghost names.
This verification process was done at the request of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as part of efforts to clear outstanding allowances dating back to August 2024.
After completing the headcount, the Finance Ministry released GHS 226,019,224 to pay 98,145 verified national service personnel.
“This figure is 81,885 less than the 180,030 names presented by the previous management of the Authority for allowance payment in 2024,” the ministerâs statement said.

Neymar’s father and agent, Neymar da Silva Santos Sr., revealed that Neymar wants to stay at Santos after this summer.
The Brazilian star returned to his childhood club on January 31, signing a contract that runs until June, after mutually ending his deal with Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia.
Due to injuries, Neymar only played seven matches for Al Hilal since his âŹ90 million ($94 million) transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023.
“Our project is not just for five months, it is a contract that we are considering renewing,” Neymar Sr. told TNT Brasil. “We didn’t come here to compete for five months, it was to give Santos the opportunity to restructure itself, to find partners for the club to rebuild itself.”

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick,has urged his players to show respect to referees and avoid arguing with them. His comments come after Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham was sent off for confronting the referee during their 1-1 draw against Osasuna.
The referee, Jose Luis Munuera Montero, said that Bellingham said “f* you,” which led to his immediate dismissal. However, Bellingham insisted that he actually said “f* off” and that it was directed at himself out of frustration, not the referee.
After the match, Bellingham insisted he did not insult the referee and called the situation a misunderstanding. The following day, he apologized on social media for putting his team in a difficult situation.
He wrote: “Enough said about the misunderstanding, just wanted to apologize again for leaving my teammates in such a tough position and thank the fans for their support and understanding. See you at home on Wednesday.”
Speaking ahead of Barcelonaâs home game against Rayo Vallecano on Monday, Flick emphasized that he had reminded his players to stay calm and avoid conflicts with match officials.

However, he was given the green light to return to competitive football on Wednesday when the French Football Federation (FFF) cleared him to play after a medical commission met to assess his condition.
The Algeria international scored the opener in the 80th minute — four minutes after coming off the bench — and ran to the Lille bench to celebrate his first Ligue 1 goal for his hometown club with teammates and coaching staff.
