Focus, track remittances to save you from begging and borrowing – Dr Atuahene to Mahama’s govt

Banking consultant, Dr. Richmond Atuahene, has advised the incoming administration to monitor the foreign remittance sector closely to prevent the need for borrowing $3 billion from the World Bank or seeking aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He further emphasized that the President should gather skilled professionals to come up with effective plans to address the country’s large debts, particularly those owed to contractors.

“He must appoint people who understand microeconomic issues to help him; that will be a significant advantage.

The next step will be financing the debts, specifically the 31 million contractors’ debts and energy-related debts,” Dr. Atuahene explained.

“His Excellency must form a team like the one in place in 2010. They need a credible arrears repayment plan so that, maybe within three or four years, the debts will be cleared, and not a new one will be created.

If this is done, the challenge becomes surmountable. With the right brains and technical people, they can achieve a lot in four years if they are allowed to help,” he stated on GHOne TV.

He continued, “Even remittances alone will surpass the IMF loan. If we are able to track them properly, we will not need to beg for US$3 billion.”

Dr. Richmond Atuahene also recommended that upon taking office, Mr. John Dramani Mahama should create a dedicated unit within the Central Bank to monitor and manage remittances.

He pointed out that while Ghana receives significant foreign remittances, only a small portion flows through the banking system, making it harder to track and manage these funds efficiently.

“The first thing I want to advise the incoming President is to strengthen the remittance system or even create a new unit at the Central Bank, as Bangladesh does, where 95% of remittances go through the banking system.

In Ghana, we only track about 50%, so the other 50% doesn’t enter the banking system.”

“In 2023, the World Bank reported US$4.7 billion in remittances, but we only tracked US$2.8 billion, so US$1.9 billion is unaccounted for. Previously, we tracked only half of the US$4.2 billion remitted. But if we implement a strong system, we will be able to track more,” Dr. Atuahene added.

“Once we are able to track remittances properly, it will help manage the economy, stabilize the cedi, and reduce inflation.”

Elon Musk now called ‘Kekius Maximus’; changes his name on X

World’s richest person, Elon Musk, has caused a stir by changing his name on the social media platform X to “Kekius Maximus” and updating his profile picture to an image of Pepe the Frog, a meme often associated with far-right groups.

He did not provide an explanation for the change, which has sparked widespread curiosity.

This move has had an immediate effect on the cryptocurrency world, with the value of a memecoin— a digital currency inspired by memes—that shares the same name as Musk’s new identity, seeing a sharp increase in value.

Musk has previously influenced cryptocurrency prices through his posts, though it’s unclear if he was involved with this particular memecoin.

“Kekius” appears to be a Latinisation of “kek”, a word roughly equivalent to “laugh out loud” popularised by gamers but now often associated with the alt right.

“Kek” is also the name of the ancient Egyptian god of darkness, who is sometimes depicted with the head of a frog.

Many people associate “Maximus” with the name of Russell Crowe’s famous character in the movie Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Musk’s new profile picture shows Pepe the Frog dressed in Roman military attire, holding what seems to be a gaming console, adding an interesting and playful twist to the meme’s typical representation.

Elon Musk suggests cybertruck blowing up near Trump hotel an act of terrorism

A Tesla Cybertruck caught fire and exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday, resulting in the death of the driver and injuring seven others with minor wounds.

The explosion occurred near the hotel’s glass doors, causing panic as the electric vehicle suddenly burst into flames.

The driver, who was the only person in the truck at the time, tragically lost their life in the blast.

Video footage captured the shocking moment when the stainless steel Tesla Cybertruck, parked at the valet area, suddenly erupted in flames.

The fire was followed by several smaller explosions, resembling fireworks. The blast severely damaged the truck and triggered alarms across the area.

    Musk suggests terror link

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, quickly responded to the explosion, speculating that it may have been a targeted attack. He drew a connection to a similar incident in New Orleans where a Ford F-150 had been rigged with explosives.

Musk noted that both vehicles were rented through the Turo car-sharing service, suggesting there might be a link between these two events.

Elon Musk clarified in his social media posts that the Tesla Cybertruck was not the cause of the explosion near the Trump International Hotel.

He stated that the vehicle’s telemetry showed everything was functioning normally at the time of the incident, eliminating any mechanical failure as a reason.

Instead, Musk suggested that the explosion might have been caused by fireworks or a bomb placed in the truck’s bed.

The incident has sparked debates about safety and the broader implications for high-profile locations like the Trump Hotel.

Tesla fans have rallied behind Musk’s assertion that the Cybertruck was not the cause of the explosion, but the event has raised questions about the risks associated with using shared vehicles for malicious purposes.

As the investigation continues, the bizarre and unsettling nature of this explosion has left many wondering about the motives behind it and whether it signals a troubling new trend.

For now, authorities are keeping tight-lipped, promising updates as they unfold.

The Western Region reported two more fatalities, bringing its total deaths to five. Notably, some victims were brought to healthcare facilities already deceased. Following these developments, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has begun mortality audits to examine the causes of death and improve response efforts.

Additionally, the number of districts with confirmed cholera cases has grown from 44 to 46, reflecting the outbreak’s spread as of December 24, 2024. The GHS is intensifying efforts to curb the outbreak, including public health education and sanitation measures.

New cholera cases have been reported in Agona East in the Central Region and La Nkwantanang Madina in the Greater Accra Region.

In response, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has activated multi-sectoral rapid response teams at the national, regional, and district levels. These teams are working to prevent further spread and offer crucial support to the affected communities.

While the number of hospitalizations has decreased from 64 to 46, the Western Region still has the highest number of patients, with 37 people hospitalized. The Greater Accra Region has three hospitalized cases, and the Central Region reports six.

The GHS continues to monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to control the outbreak.

Efforts to trace contacts have been effective, with 9,667 individuals identified, of which 8,667 have completed the required five-day follow-up period.

The second phase of the Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign took place from December 15 to 18, 2024, in areas of the Western Region most affected by the outbreak.

Districts such as Sekondi-Takoradi, Effia Kwesimintsim, Shama, and Ahanta West were covered, and a mop-up operation was carried out on December 19.

The campaign successfully vaccinated 596,205 people, achieving an impressive 92.9% of the target population.

To help prevent further outbreaks, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has also stepped up testing of food vendors and water sources in the affected districts.

Video: See how Stonebwoy’s ex manager showed up in Jamaica to support Shatta Wale

Former manager of dancehall artist Stonebwoy, Blakk Cedi, has been spotted in Jamaica offering his support to Shatta Wale ahead of his performance at Vybz Kartel’s much-anticipated Freedom Street concert.

Videos of Blakk Cedi meeting with Shatta Wale have been circulating online, sparking excitement and discussions among fans. Many see this gesture as a significant show of support for Shatta Wale, who is the only Ghanaian artist invited to perform at the event.

The move has been widely praised as a unifying moment within Ghana’s music industry.

The development comes shortly after Stonebwoy’s controversial remarks, where he downplayed Shatta Wale’s participation in the Freedom Street concert.

In a recent interview, Stonebwoy hinted that Shatta Wale’s role at the Freedom Street concert was limited to being a curtain-raiser, dismissing it as a move to align with international artists for personal gain.

However, his former manager Blakk Cedi’s presence in Jamaica seems to contradict this narrative.

The Freedom Street concert is a major milestone in Jamaican music, returning after a long break due to Vybz Kartel’s incarceration.

Now free, the event’s founder has made a grand comeback, curating a diverse lineup featuring artists from Africa and the Caribbean to mark this historic occasion.

‘We are not accountable to Ghanaians’ – GFA ExCo member Nana Oduro Sarfo

Member of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Executive Council, Nana Sarfo Oduro, has clarified that the GFA is not accountable to fans or the general public.

Instead, he explained that the association’s operations are structured to answer only to football clubs and other stakeholders within the organization.

His remarks came in response to growing demands from Ghanaians for reforms in the GFA, particularly amid concerns over the current state of Ghanaian football.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, Sarfo detailed the association’s governance model, emphasizing that the GFA’s mandate is primarily focused on its member clubs and affiliates, not the wider public.

“The Ghana Football Association is accountable to the football people. It is an organisation. We are accountable to each and every football club. The association is made up of individual clubs. We are not accountable to supporters or Ghanaians,” he said.

Over the years, the GFA has faced intense criticism for the poor state of football in Ghana.

The country’s recent failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has further fueled frustration among football fans, many of whom are calling for reforms within the association.

In a heartfelt social media post on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Samini shared his pride and admiration. Samini’s post praising Shatta Wale has stirred varied reactions online.

Some social media users have criticized Samini for congratulating Shatta Wale, given the ongoing feud between Shatta and Stonebwoy, who was mentored by Samini. They argue that the timing of the praise is questionable, as the rivalry between the two dancehall stars has recently resurfaced.

On the other hand, many have lauded Samini for setting aside past differences and recognizing Shatta Wale’s achievements. They commend him for being mature and showing support for another artist’s success, despite their history of conflicts.

Meanwhile, reactions to Shatta Wale’s performance at the Kingston concert have also been divided. Fans of the Shatta Movement believe he delivered a strong performance, highlighting his stage presence and composure. However, some critics feel he could have done more to elevate the show.

The mixed responses underscore the passionate and diverse opinions within the dancehall community.

Video: Death of a veep, prayers for Oprah Winfrey, others – 12 ‘doom and good’ prophecies by Nigel Gaisie

Founder of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Nigel Gaisie, has shared a set of prophecies for 2025.

During the December 31, 2024, Watch Night service, Gaisie told his congregation that these prophecies were revealed to him by God and have worldwide significance.

He called for prayers to prevent some of the negative events he foresees.

While some of the prophecies speak of troubling times, he reassured Ghanaians that 2025 will be a year of prosperity and positive outcomes, unlike the past years.

His prophecies cover various areas, including politics, security, and traditional institutions.

    1. 2025 will be a year filled with good fortune and achievements

“This year is going to be very good and productive. It is going to be a prosperous year,” he said.

    1. A religion different from Christianity will dominate Europe

“I saw a religion, which is not Christianity, dominating Europe. The Lord told me to tell Christian leaders that we must do more. If Christian leaders around the world, including myself and any other man or woman of God, do not act, we will witness the rise of another religion in Europe. I saw France and other parts of Europe being overtaken by this new religion, much like what has happened in Turkey. We need to pray and do more evangelism; otherwise, the influence of Christianity in Europe could diminish to zero.”

    1. Europe to see harsh weather conditions are affecting

Gaisie prophesied severe weather disruptions, foreseeing devastating climate conditions in Europe.

    1. Vice President of Nigeria is set to take over as President

“The Lord took me to a place like Nigeria, and I saw a vice president becoming president in Nigeria,” Gaisie stated.

    1. Christianity will be overtaken by a different religion in Europe

“I saw a situation in Côte d’Ivoire similar to what happened in Ghana. I am being cautious this time, but I see an opposition leader, someone who has been in power before, coming into power again. Those who are spiritually guided will understand the prophecy.”

    1. Black Stars to qualify for the 2026 World Cup

Gaisie confidently prophesied that the Black Stars would qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

    1. Potential threats to Ghana’s safety on January 7th, 8th, and 9th

He forewarned of potential threats to Ghana’s security on January 7th, 8th, and 9th, urging vigilance to prevent calamity.

    1. Ghanaians should be watchful and pray before and after the inauguration ceremony in January 2025

“The Lord said we should be watchful on these dates: January 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th. We must pray and remain vigilant. I have seen many things, but I am being cautious. However, I repeat and put this on record: if Ghana goes to sleep on these days, something untoward may happen. After January 7, when the President-elect is sworn into office, people should continue to pray, stay alert, and remain watchful. May Ghana not fall asleep, and may happiness not cause people to lose their vigilance,” he prophesied.

    1. A vice president from a West African country will pass away

Gaisie predicted the death of a vice president from a West African country.

    1. Attacks on two traditional leaders, including a beheading

    1. A major loss concerning a well-known female figure from the Central Region

Gaisie foresaw a significant loss involving a prominent female figure from Ghana’s Central Region, comparing the situation to the tragic death of former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, and predicted a state burial.

Afua Asantewaa tells how she was dragged during first Sing-a-thon attempt

Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum, who recently completed her second attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon, has spoken out about a “horrible plot” she faced during her first attempt.

Despite facing criticism from many Ghanaians, Afua successfully completed her five-day singing marathon in Kumasi.

Some people on social media accused her of being motivated by greed and a desire for attention.

Others suggested she should step back and allow the country to focus on more important issues.

Afua recently opened up about her second attempt and revealed some troubling details about her first attempt in Accra.

In a viral video, she shared how she discovered some people had plotted against her, even going so far as to try and drug her.

“The first attempt, I really suffered. Everyone wanted to show they had ideas, telling me to do things this way and that way. But in the end, when I didn’t get the result I expected, they said I was the only failure in the story,” she recalled.

She then added, “In 2025, I’ll tell you everything. When they planned to give me a drug so I would collapse and they could put me in an ambulance… I’ll tell you everything. The first one, it was God. The second one too, it was God.”

Afua became emotional as she expressed her disbelief over why anyone would want to hurt her for attempting to achieve a recognition that offers no financial reward. This was especially difficult after she had been accused of greed and exploitation for her efforts.

“For a recognition that doesn’t have money, for a recognition that I’ve been tagged greedy and insulted, why would you even want to destroy me over it?” she asked.

Afua said although she would like to go into detail about the plot against her, she had been advised to remain silent for now.

“People say if I talk, it will affect a lot of brands and a lot of people, so I should keep quiet,” she explained.

Looking back on her experience and the smaller crowd at her second attempt, Afua mentioned that she actually enjoyed the more personal atmosphere.

“This time around, I really had time to assess myself. It was so intimate, and I loved it,” she emphasised.

Manchester United’s plans to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain could be disrupted by Chelsea, who are also looking to strengthen their attack.

United are interested in Kolo Muani to help solve their goal-scoring issues, especially with Marcus Rashford likely to be sold this winter.

However, Chelsea is reportedly showing strong interest in the player, and with their current position in the top four, they could pose a significant threat to United’s pursuit.

Meanwhile, United is struggling in 14th place in the Premier League, which may make it more difficult to convince Kolo Muani to choose a move to Old Trafford.

Tuchel officially begins as England’s head coach ahead of 2026 World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has officially started his role as head coach of the England men’s national team on an 18-month contract, which will last until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

Tuchel’s appointment, announced by the English Football Association in October, began on January 1, 2025. He will work alongside Anthony Barry, his former assistant during his time at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain coach attended the 2026 World Cup qualifying draw in early December, where England was placed in a group with Serbia, Albania, Latvia, and Andorra.

Following the draw he said: “I have huge respect for Serbia and Albania. They can always surprise. They have a strong history of technical football, an emotional crowd and emotional players. They have two famous ex-players as coaches so we should be very aware of that.

“England has never played Latvia so this is a new experience for all of us, and then of course we have Andorra where we are huge favourites.

“But we have to qualify, this is the most important thing, this is where all the focus goes. There cannot be any other approach but to take it seriously, take it with respect and make it happen before we can bring the dream.

“England has the players and the characteristics to go far. But now we have to prove it in the qualifiers. The gaps between the big nations closes all the time, in every tournament you see the same effect that it gets more and more difficult to win your games. First of all we have to show full respect and make sure we reach our top level from March.”

Tuchel’s opening fixture in charge will be home games against Albania and Latvia on March 21 and 24 at Wembley.

  • Hotel manager, receptionist, 3 others charged in connection with Liam Payne’s death

Hotel manager, receptionist, 3 others charged in connection with Liam Payne’s death

Authorities in Argentina have charged five people in connection with the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne.

The 31-year-old died on October 16 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires.

Among those facing manslaughter charges are the hotel manager, Gilda Martin, the receptionist, Esteban Grassi, and Payne’s friend, Roger Nores, according to officials.

Two others, hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz, have been charged with providing drugs.

In Argentina, prosecutors collect evidence and present it to a judge, who then decides whether the case should go to trial. On Friday, Judge Laura Bruniard approved moving forward with the case, according to a statement from the prosecutor’s office.

The defendants’ lawyers can appeal against that decision. If their appeals are not successful, the trial phase starts.

In court documents, Judge Bruniard listed the charges against the five suspects, who are referred to by their initials, as is the custom in court documents at this stage of the proceedings.

Hotel employee EDP is suspected of having sold Liam Payne cocaine on 15 and 16 October.

Waiter BNP is also suspected of having sold cocaine to Liam Payne twice on 14 October.

Payne’s friend RLN is suspected of manslaughter for allegedly “failing to fulfil his duties of care, assistance and help” towards the singer after having “abandoned him to his luck knowing that he was incapable of fending for himself and knowing that he [Payne] suffered from multiple addictions”

Hotel Manager GAM is suspected of manslaughter for allegedly failing to stop Payne from being taken to his hotel room moments before his death.

According to the court papers, given Payne’s state, the room’s balcony posed a “serious threat” and the manager should have ensured Payne was kept in a safe place until medical help arrived.

Chief receptionist ERG is also suspected of manslaughter for allegedly asking three people to “drag” Payne, who could not stand up, to his room, instead of keeping him safe.

Judge Bruniard said that she did not think that Liam Payne’s friend, the hotel manager and the receptionist “had planned or wanted the death of Payne” but that their actions had created a “risk” to his life.

If convicted, the three people charged with manslaughter could face prison sentences ranging from one to five years.

The punishment for drug supply is harsher, with sentences ranging from four to 15 years.

Judge Bruniard has ordered the two accused of supplying drugs to remain in custody and appear in court within 24 working hours.

Fernando Madeo Facente, the lawyer for Braian Paiz, told the BBC that he had advised his client not to turn himself in.

He argued that Paiz was not a flight risk and had fully cooperated with the investigation, including voluntarily handing over his mobile phone with chats between him and Liam Payne.

The lawyer argued that keeping Braian Paiz in custody before the trial was unnecessary and excessive.

He also denied claims from the prosecution that his client had sold drugs to Liam Payne.

According to the lawyer, Mr. Paiz and Payne spent time together privately, where they talked and engaged in various activities, including drug use.

However, he firmly stated that no money was exchanged and called the accusations baseless and unsupported by evidence.

The lawyer also criticized reports in the Argentine media that labeled his client as “Liam Payne’s dealer,” calling them completely false.

Husband files for divorce after wife’s controversial photo with Chris Brown surfaces

A 42-year-old man from Lusaka is seeking a divorce after his wife posed for a controversial photo with American R&B star Chris Brown.

The incident happened during a “meet and greet” session after Brown’s concert at the FNB Stadium in South Africa. In the photo, the 34-year-old woman is seen with Chris Brown kissing her cheek.

In his court documents, the husband claims the photo, which quickly spread on social media, disrespected him and damaged their marriage beyond repair.

He described the picture as “demeaning” and said his wife’s actions were inappropriate for someone in a committed relationship. He also stated that her decision to take the photo broke his trust and their marriage vows.

In his divorce petition, the husband expressed his feelings of embarrassment and emotional distress, stating, “My wife acted in a manner unbecoming of a married woman. This picture has humiliated me publicly.”

The husband said that when he confronted his wife about the photo, she brushed off his concerns and defended it as a harmless moment from the event.

The wife, on the other hand, insists that the kiss was innocent and misunderstood. She explained that it was just a playful interaction during a fan meet-and-greet and had no intention of disrespecting her husband.

She also suggested that her husband’s reaction is an overreaction and believes it reflects deeper problems in their marriage.

Why do you need another wife when you have one already ? – Pete Edochie quizzes

Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has recently shared his thoughts on the challenges of modern relationships during an interview.

He expressed concern about the growing instability in marriages today and spoke about his son Yul Edochie’s decision to marry a second wife, which has sparked controversy.

The legendary actor also reflected on how marriages lasting more than a decade have become rare, lamenting the decline in long-lasting unions.

“It’s disheartening to see how quickly marriages collapse these days,” Pete remarked, stressing that genuine, enduring love is being replaced by shallow, fleeting connections.

On the subject of polygamy, Pete questioned the rationale behind men seeking multiple wives.

“What can another wife give you that the one you already have cannot?” he asked.

He added that, “The excitement in intimacy doesn’t come from the other person—it comes from you, the man. So why the need for another partner?”

These remarks follow the widespread social media debate over Yul Edochie’s recent second marriage.

While Pete stopped short of directly criticizing his son, his comments appear to promote commitment and stability in marriage.

One important issue Edith addressed was the accusations from her ex-husband that she had stopped him from seeing their children. She clarified that, contrary to what Reggie Zippy had claimed, he had never tried to visit them.

She said that speaking out has helped improve her relationship with Reggie, especially when it comes to co-parenting and clearing up any misunderstandings.

Some netizens are also of the view that the aftermath of her interview has played a significant role in resolving their differences.

Reggie Zippy and Edith Ward’s recent reunions

Recently, Reggie Zippy and Edith Ward came together to celebrate their daughter’s 10th birthday, and the moment was shared in posts on social media by Reggie. These posts showed that the two had begun to co-parent peacefully after years of conflict and separation.

In another surprising move, Reggie Zippy visited Edith Ward’s home during the Christmas period. He shared on social media that he visited on Boxing Day to celebrate with the family.

He also posted a playful photo of him and Edith having fun, which sparked mixed reactions online.

During their breakup, which was widely followed on social media, Edith revealed that she filed for divorce due to issues like infidelity, dishonesty, alcohol abuse, and financial neglect.

She accused Reggie Zippy of having an affair with a white woman for two to three years and said his inability to provide financially forced her to work hard to support the family.

“I walked away and filed for divorce after you betrayed our marriage. Lies, deceit, constant cheating, and financial abuse made me work day and night to save my family.

My love and patience weren’t enough, so I decided to save myself and my children,” parts of her Instagram post read in September 2023.

Leader of the High-Grade Family, Samini, has assured Ghanaians that he will mediate the ongoing tensions between Stonebwoy and Kelvyn Boy. In a recent online statement addressing their renewed feud, Samini urged fans to remain calm while the matter is resolved.

Stonebwoy recently expressed frustrations about his past fallout with Kelvyn Boy, raising serious concerns. Samini emphasised the importance of patience and pledged to handle the situation thoughtfully.

Stonebwoy recently declared that he has no intention of reconciling with Kelvyn Boy, accusing his former protege of serious offences, including an alleged attempt on his life.

Kelvyn Boy strongly denied these allegations, describing them as shocking and defamatory, and accused Stonebwoy of tarnishing his reputation.

While the dispute sparked heated exchanges and public attention, Samini, who has mentored Stonebwoy, stepped in to address the issue, calling for calm and hinting at a potential resolution to the conflict.

The veteran musician, who appeared displeased with the situation, assured fans that everything would eventually be settled.

Samini, addressing the situation, said, “Order will be restored at home… The second generation will have to study history a bit further to understand. But on the grand scheme of things, we have chosen to let whatever has been against us be for us henceforth.

GFA reportedly planning a dissolution of the entire Black Stars backroom staff

Ghanaian football legends John Paintsil and Fatau Dauda are likely to be relieved of their duties with the Black Stars as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) undertakes a major restructuring of Otto Addo’s coaching team.

According to Ghanasoccernet, the GFA intends to replace all assistant coaches to build a new support system for the head coach.

This decision follows a report Otto Addo submitted to the GFA Executive Council on November 27, 2024, detailing the reasons behind the team’s underwhelming performance.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has yet to decide Otto Addo’s future as Black Stars coach, following an inconclusive meeting with stakeholders, including the government.

The GFA has not issued an official statement regarding the technical team’s future.

Otto Addo and his staff have faced heavy criticism for failing to qualify the team for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, marking the first such failure in 20 years.

Ghana finished last in Group F, with three points from six matches. Attention now turns to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers starting in March 2026.

    9. Kwaku Manu defends Kyekyeku in saga with Tracey Boakye; says he lacks freedom

Kwaku Manu defends Kyekyeku in saga with Tracey Boakye; says he lacks freedom

Kumawood actor Kwaku Manu has addressed the ongoing tension between actress Tracy Boakye and actor Kyekyeku.

In a video shared online on December 15, 2024, he explained that Kyekyeku declined Tracy’s offer due to limitations imposed by his current production team.

Kwaku Manu added that Kyekyeku frequently sought his guidance on handling the situation and requested him to explain to Tracy why he had been avoiding her calls.

“Kyekyeku came to my house and told me to speak to Tracy Boakye and apologise on his behalf for not answering her calls. Kyekyeku is popular today because some people brought him into the industry, but he doesn’t have ultimate freedom.

Some people feel they ‘own’ him and dictate which productions he can work with. They believe he can’t act for any other production outside their camp,” Kwaku Manu explained.

He also recounted how Kyekyeku felt disheartened when he saw Tracy Boakye’s live video, where she publicly aired her grievances about his refusal to cooperate.

“I had planned to call Tracy, but when I dropped Kyekyeku off, someone sent him a video of Tracy on a live broadcast, talking about him. He became very sad in the car after watching it,” Kwaku Manu said.

Kwaku Manu called on the production team Kyekyeku works with to give him more freedom to collaborate with other producers.

“If Kyekyeku’s camp doesn’t allow him to work freely, it will hurt his reputation. Issues like these arise, and no one speaks on his behalf, which only leads to misunderstandings and tarnishes his image,” he said.

He also recalled a time when Kyekyeku had to back out of one of his own productions, just two days before filming was set to begin.

“Kyekyeku was supposed to be part of my movie, but just two days before filming, I got a call that he couldn’t make it. He didn’t tell me directly, but I could see how upset he was,” Kwaku Manu shared.

Kwaku Manu further urged Tracy Boakye to be understanding, adding that Kyekyeku’s refusal wasn’t intentional.

“Tracy, please continue to love Kyekyeku. I know you care about him, and if you didn’t, you wouldn’t have given him $2,000. He also values you and your support. Please forgive him—he can’t speak out because of the restrictions he faces,” he pleaded.

      Background

On December 13, 2024, Tracy Boakye voiced her disappointment on social media after Kyekyeku declined to feature in the sequel of her movie, Stubborn Ghost, despite his role in the original.

She shared that she had previously supported Kyekyeku by gifting him $2,000, making his decision to reject the project even more upsetting for her.

In her live session, Tracy shared her side of the story, saying, “I paid Kyekyeku for his role in Stubborn Ghost and never expected him to work for free. What hurt the most was how he ignored my calls when it was time to shoot the sequel. I’ve tried to reach him multiple times, but he just ignored me completely, and it feels personal now.”

The ongoing dispute has since sparked widespread attention on social media.

Fifteen years of sickness – Kunta Kinte shares his story of his ‘struggles’

Kunta Kinte, a member of the music duo Bradez, has shared his challenging 15-year journey with a serious health condition. Speaking on the Fakye Showbiz program on December 14, 2024, he recounted that his struggles began with a stroke, which left the right side of his body paralyzed. This affected his ability to walk or use his arm.

Though he was briefly confined to a wheelchair, he worked hard to regain some mobility and overcome the limitations caused by the illness.

“I have been sick for the past fifteen years. But I remain motivated and believe that one day I will be completely healed. The sickness started with a stroke, and for a while, I couldn’t even walk or use my arms. I had to sit in a wheelchair. But I didn’t stay in it for long. If I were to tell you my story, I wouldn’t finish today,” he said.

Despite the difficulties he faced, Kunta Kinte made it clear that giving up was never an option for him.

He refused to consider suicide and instead turned his experience into a source of inspiration, hoping to encourage others dealing with health struggles to stay resilient.

“You have to believe in yourself. Your life is precious, so you have to push through. My story motivates others who are sick to believe that they too will heal. Suicide never crossed my mind. I’m always happy. As long as I’m alive, I enjoy life just like I used to,” he added.

Kunta Kinte also addressed rumours stating his illness was a result of snatching someone’s girlfriend.

He dismissed these claims, saying, “They said I became sick because I snatched someone’s girlfriend. But when it comes to football, I know how to play. I also play basketball, rap, and do a lot of things. People didn’t know what was wrong with me, so that’s why they spread such rumours.”

Answer your true calling – Yul Edochie advises pastors to reconsider their spiritual paths

Nollywood actor and self-proclaimed cleric, Yul Edochie, has sparked controversy by asserting that many Nigerian pastors were originally destined to be native doctors.

Edochie claims that these pastors shifted their paths away from their true calling due to the negative portrayal of native doctors by Western influences and the film industry, which labeled them as “evil”.

He has urged some Nigerian religious leaders to reconsider their allegiance to Christianity and embrace their roles as native doctors instead.

Edochie highlighted that being a native doctor is a divine calling, emphasizing their crucial role in serving humanity.

On his Instagram page, Edochie wrote, “Many pastors today actually have the calling to be native doctors, but they are refusing to answer the call because Oyibo people brainwashed us to believe it is evil. And Nollywood has also contributed to making native doctors look evil.

“Being a native doctor is a divine call from God Almighty; it means you have been chosen to help humanity.

“A true native doctor fights evil. Unless he decides to be evil. Same way a pastor can decide to be evil.

“Go and answer your call. You may never have fulfilment in your life if you don’t answer your call.”

    14. An open letter to Netflix: Super Story creator slams streaming platform for selection bias

An open letter to Netflix: Super Story creator slams streaming platform for selection bias

Veteran filmmaker Wale Adenuga, the creator of iconic Nigerian TV shows like Papa Ajasco and Super Story, has openly criticised Netflix’s operations in Nigeria.

In a strongly worded statement titled “A Critique of Netflix’s Approach in Nigeria,” Adenuga accused the streaming giant of perpetuating a flawed system that prioritises connections over quality and creativity in its movie selection process.

Adenuga lamented that Netflix and similar platforms have relied heavily on the influence of wealthy and well-connected producers, sidelining truly talented filmmakers without access to such networks.

He argued that the selection process has degraded the quality of Nigerian films featured on the platform.

“The problem lies in the corrupted and poor selection process of movies. Without a shadow of a doubt, I believe that Netflix and similar platforms based their acquisitions more on how famous and connected the producers were rather than the creativity and quality of the films themselves,” Adenuga said.

Wale Adenuga criticized the quality of Nigerian films on Netflix, contrasting them with the impactful works of legendary filmmakers like Tunde Kelani and Zeb Ejiro. He accused some producers of exploiting international partnerships for personal benefit, sidelining the broader film industry. Adenuga called for reforms, suggesting Netflix implement a fair and open system for selecting Nigerian content, allowing diverse producers to pitch their projects. This, he argued, would ensure only the best stories represent Nigeria on the global stage.

“A good movie that scores 90 per cent on storyline and 50 per cent on technicalities will be far more embraced by the Nigerian audience than a movie with a 90 per cent technical score but only 50 per cent on storyline,” Adenuga concluded.

The filmmaker’s candid remarks have sparked discussions about fairness, quality, and inclusivity in the Nigerian film industry’s collaborations with international platforms.

During a candid interview on ‘The Receipts Podcast,’ the ‘All Over’ hitzmaker talked about trying to spark a romantic connection with actor Kendrick Sampson during the filming of her Forgiveness music video.

Initially unaware of his fame from Insecure, Tiwa became intrigued by Sampson’s charm and good looks. She admitted to making some subtle advances, though they were unsuccessful in forming a romantic bond.

“When he came on set, my makeup and hair stylist was like, ‘That’s the guy from Insecure,’ and I was like, ‘Okay?’ And he was just lovely. Like, really, really sweet,” Tiwa recounted.

After watching Insecure following the video shoot, Tiwa found herself even more intrigued and decided to reach out to Kendrick while she was still in Los Angeles.

Despite her subtle efforts to express interest, Tiwa humorously admitted that her attempts didn’t land.

“I tried to paint and throw signs—but nothing. A little bit of me died,” she joked. “I want to unfollow him [laughs]. I’m angry [laughs].”

Tiwa concluded by praising Kendrick as “lovely” and “so cute,” despite her playful frustration over the unreciprocated signals.

    16. Mona Gucci declared not guilty in visa fraud case

Mona Gucci declared not guilty in visa fraud case

Monalisa Abigail Semeha, also known as Mona Gucci, faced accusations of defrauding a trader of GHC103,400 but was acquitted and discharged by an Accra Circuit Court.

Mona Gucci, working as a Travel/Event Consultant, allegedly collected the money to obtain American visas for clients of Comfort Obiri, the complainant, in February 2019 but did not deliver the promised visas.

Charged with defrauding by false pretences, Mona Gucci maintained her innocence throughout the trial. The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong, presented three witnesses to support their case.

However, the Defence Counsel argued that the prosecution had not established a prima facie case, filing a submission of no case.

Judge Isaac Addo, presiding over the case, ruled that it was essentially a civil matter that had gone awry. Consequently, the court acquitted and discharged Monalisa.

The prosecution contended that Comfort Obiri, a resident of Ofankor, Accra, was introduced to Mona Gucci, who resides in Odorkor, Accra, by an intermediary named Esther. Mona Gucci assured Comfort Obiri that she could secure the visas at a cost of GHC40,000 each.

The court learned that Comfort Obiri introduced three individuals to Mona Gucci for her to facilitate their USA visas. Mona Gucci reportedly received GHC103,400 from them under the guise of arranging these visas but failed to follow through. Although she promised to refund the money, she could not fulfill that promise.

There’s no future in politics for you, quit – Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamaklo advises Alan Kyerematen

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has urged Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, to retire from politics.

Kyerematen, who left the NPP in 2023 after losing the party’s presidential primaries, cited unfair treatment towards himself and his supporters. After resigning, he launched the Movement for Change and ran as an independent candidate in the December 7, 2024, elections.

Many expected him to challenge the main candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and John Mahama of the NDC. However, Kyerematen’s performance fell far short of expectations.

Although he has been a well-known political figure for over 20 years, Kyerematen failed to convert his reputation into electoral success. He managed to secure just 0.28% of the votes, finishing fourth, even behind some minor candidates.

Political experts believe his poor showing raises serious questions about his future in politics. Speaking on TV3, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated that it might be time for Kyerematen to step away from the political scene, as it no longer seems promising for him.

“As far as I am concerned, I would advise Alan to walk away from politics. I don’t think he has any future in it,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated.

He further criticised Kyerematen’s decision to serve in President Akufo-Addo’s second-term administration despite harboring presidential ambitions.

“Alan had no business joining President Akufo-Addo’s second term when he knew he had presidential ambitions,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe added.

God, all other spirits of the universe had rejected Akufo-Addo, NPP – Bullgod on Dec. 7 defeat

Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, known as Bullgod, believes the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faced God’s judgement on December 7.

He thinks the party was punished for mismanaging the country despite having access to plenty of resources.

According to Bullgod, no matter how hard the government campaigned to stay in power, they couldn’t escape the consequences of their actions.

He shared these views during an appearance on United Showbiz on United Television in Accra.

He said, “God was angry with the NPP. The governance of the country was not the best. The water bodies were angry they had destroyed them and wanted to punish them.

The kind of things that went on in the Ashanti Region, we shouldn’t have gotten the percentage we got in that region.

The things we saw and heard about the results of the election are an indication that what happened was divine. If the universe and the environment have rejected you, there is nothing you can do about it,” he said.

On killings recorded during the elections, Bullgod indicated that it is time we move past that, adding that it is not worth it to lose your life just because of an election.

Just stay where you are if you aren’t ready to serve Ghanaians – Mahama warns appointees

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has warned potential appointees not to seek roles in his administration unless they are fully dedicated to serving the public.

“People who are considering themselves for various positions… and I just want to warn them, it is not going to be a walk in the park. If you are not prepared to work and serve the people of Ghana diligently, with modesty and humility, then do not come.

      Just stay where you are.”

Speaking during his Thanksgiving service at the Assemblies of God Church in Accra, John Mahama asserted that the outcome of the election was a reminder of the citizens’ power in determining who becomes a leader.

“We have grown in arrogance and selfishness, and we have believed that the power that we wield over the people belongs to us and did not recognise that it was God who gave it to us temporarily.

“God has made us know that power belongs to the people. It should serve as a lesson to those of us who are coming into government.”

“Society tells you you’re supposed to be with one person. You get married, and that’s supposed to be the end-all, be-all,” the Grammy-winning singer said. He also revealed that his divorce from Crystal Renay Williams in 2022 helped him embrace his true self.

“I realised that I’ve not been living my truth for a very, very long time,” Ne-Yo stated. “Now I’m living it, and you can tell—my skin is glowing.”

The singer also said that over a certain period in his life, he was “lying and trying to be somebody I wasn’t” in order to please others. “It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders,” he explained. Ne-Yo also said all of that acting was “complete and utter time wasted.”

The 45-year-old clarified that his current stance on monogamy does not mean he’s condemning the practice. “Monogamy is for you. It’s not for me,” he said. “Everything’s not for everybody.”

Ne-Yo also said that his relationship with Renay has since improved after he embraced his truth. “As long as my happy ain’t messing with anybody else’s happy, I’m in the right place,” the Mad singer said. “I’ll be damned if I ever go back to that person who needed to lie for the appeasement of somebody else. I’m not that anymore.”

    22. Ghana to end 2024 with 18% inflation rate – IMF

Ghana to end 2024 with 18% inflation rate – IMF

Ghana’s inflation rate is projected to reach 18% by the end of 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revealed in its latest Country Report. This marks an upward revision from its earlier estimate of 15%, reflecting persistent price pressures caused by a weaker cedi and the ongoing dry spell.

The IMF noted that despite these challenges, Ghana’s macroeconomic outlook remains positive, buoyed by stronger-than-expected GDP growth in the second quarter of 2024. The Fund has consequently revised its 2024 growth projection upward to 4.0% from the earlier forecast of 3.1%, made during the second Economic Credit Facility (ECF) review.

“Continued tight monetary policy will bring inflation back to the Bank of Ghana’s target band (8±2 percent) by end-2025,” the IMF stated, underlining the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline to curb inflationary pressures.

The IMF’s analysis also highlighted ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts and the anticipated completion of Ghana’s debt restructuring as critical measures for ensuring public debt sustainability. It further projected that the country’s current account deficit would remain balanced until 2026, with international reserves expected to reach three months of import coverage.

Despite the improved outlook, the IMF cautioned that significant downside risks remain. Externally, heightened geopolitical tensions in regions such as Ukraine and the Middle East, coupled with commodity price volatility, could adversely affect Ghana’s economy. These factors may lead to higher imported inflation and increased investor risk aversion.

On the domestic front, the IMF warned of potential policy slippages ahead of the 2024 general elections or during the political transition period. Such setbacks, it said, could undermine macroeconomic stability, complicate debt restructuring discussions, and worsen domestic financing conditions.

“If protracted, weak cocoa harvests could affect exports and growth prospects. More generally, Ghana is subject to risks related to climate shocks,” the IMF added.

The Fund also expressed concerns that the disinflationary process is progressing at a slower pace than anticipated in the first half of 2024, while exchange rate volatility remains elevated.

Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has weighed in on the IMF’s latest assessment, describing it as a positive signal for Ghana’s economy.

However, he emphasised that these improvements do not imply that all sectors of the economy are performing well.

Ghana’s inflation outlook remains central to its economic recovery strategy, with policymakers expected to maintain tight monetary policies to steer inflation back to target levels. As the year progresses, the government’s ability to navigate risks and implement prudent economic policies will determine the resilience of Ghana’s recovery.

    23. Assist us resolve energy sector crisis; our economy is on the line – Mahama to UK govt

Assist us resolve energy sector crisis; our economy is on the line – Mahama to UK govt

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on the British government to assist in addressing Ghana’s worsening energy sector crisis.

The appeal was made during a courtesy call by the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, on Saturday, December 14, at Mr. Mahama’s office in Accra.

Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude for the United Kingdom’s ongoing support for Ghana’s development and highlighted the urgent need for intervention to stabilise the energy sector.

“If we don’t do something about the energy sector, it could crash everything we are doing. So, as quickly as possible, we want to look at what assistance we can get across the entire energy sector value chain to ensure a more sustainable sector going forward,” he noted.

Ghana’s energy sector is currently in a critical state, plagued by years of mismanagement, inefficiency, and poor financial oversight. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam recently revealed that the sector faces a staggering financing gap of $1.9 billion, which is now estimated to have grown to $2.5 billion (equivalent to over GH¢35 billion). This highlights the scale of the crisis.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also urged the Ghanaian government to overhaul the governance framework of the sector to address persistent challenges, including irregular electricity supply.

During the meeting, High Commissioner Thompson congratulated Mr. Mahama on his electoral victory and reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana.

“Your 120-day plan and our interests coincide, particularly in the areas of health, education, economic growth, and job creation,” she stated.

The two leaders discussed key issues, including trade, investment, and development cooperation. They also explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

Mr. Mahama’s 120-day plan aims to reset the country’s economic and social policies, with a focus on tackling pressing issues such as the energy crisis.

The meeting underscored the shared commitment between Ghana and the UK to work together towards sustainable growth and development.

    24. Pikworo Heritage and Slave Camp positioned to boost tourism this festive season after refurbishment

Pikworo Heritage and Slave Camp positioned to boost tourism this festive season after refurbishment

The Pikworo Heritage and Slave Camp, located at Nania near Paga in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, is set to attract more tourists and boost the local economy following its recent redevelopment, commissioned by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).

The refurbishment project includes the construction of a perimeter wall, frontage, summer huts, washrooms, and an administration block with a waiting area, reception, manager’s room, and a souvenirs display room. Remaining works include fencing, a graveyard, and landscaping.

This initiative is part of the broader effort by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, through the GTA, to beautify tourist sites across the country, particularly those tied to the slave trade, with funding from the Tourism Development Fund.

The redevelopment aims to preserve the history and heritage of the region, attract more visitors, and act as a catalyst for job creation and socioeconomic development, especially for local communities.

At the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Benjamin Anane, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GTA in charge of General Services, emphasised that the government is committed to redeveloping all of the country’s tourist sites to boost visitation and revenue.

“Tourism is one of the major foreign exchange earners of countries globally due to its value chain linkages,” he noted. He called for strategic investment in the tourism sector to ensure its sustainable development.

“Ghana is the leading tourist destination in West Africa, but on a global scale, it is not particularly exciting because we are number eight in Sub-Saharan Africa, and our target is to get to the top five in the next five years,” Mr. Anane added.

He stressed that achieving this goal would require collective efforts from communities, traditional authorities, local governance structures, and the GTA to identify potential tourist sites and products, and invest sustainably in their development.

“Every country has a strong point… in Ghana, it is a mix-bag of many things, but strong among them is our connection to the African diaspora through the Atlantic slave trade,” he explained. “Heritage sites such as this become important to sustain the diversity of interest in our tourism and also encourage domestic tourists to actively engage and explore the country.”

Mr. Wisdom Ahadzi, Upper East Regional Director of GTA, reinforced the idea that tourism development requires a collective approach. He urged the community to take ownership of the site and contribute to realizing its full benefits.

Mr. Gerard Ataogye, District Chief Executive of Kassena-Nankana West, praised the government for its investment in the Pikworo Heritage and Slave Camp, noting that it would help increase visitation, boost the local economy, and create jobs for the youth. He called for private partnerships to further develop other local attractions, such as the crocodile ponds and Kukla shrine, to drive economic growth.

Pe Asangchera Thomas Aluah, Divisional Chief of Kazigu, representing Pe Pwanalonga Charles Awiah Awampaga II, Paramount Chief of the Paga Traditional Area, highlighted the historical significance of the Pikworo Slave and Heritage Camp. He encouraged the public to visit the site and learn more about the history of the slave trade.

A five-member committee was inaugurated to oversee the operations of the newly refurbished site, ensuring its long-term success as a tourism hub.

    25. Mahama vows to have ‘dedicated funding’ to sustain, fix Free SHS policy

Mahama vows to have ‘dedicated funding’ to sustain, fix Free SHS policy

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has pledged to secure dedicated funding to sustain and address the challenges facing Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

He strongly rejected claims during the election campaign that his administration would abolish the initiative, describing such accusations as baseless political propaganda from supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview with Voice of America (VOA) on December 14, Mahama stated, “Free SHS has come to stay, and it is not going anywhere. Nobody is going to scrap Free SHS. What was said was political talk and gimmickry. We are going to maintain it. What we are going to do is get dedicated funding for it.”

Introduced in 2017 under the Akufo-Addo administration, the Free SHS policy provides free education, boarding, and meals to students in public senior high schools.

The policy has opened doors for many Ghanaian youths, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, to access secondary education.

However, it has faced challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and delays in funding, which have hindered its full effectiveness.

Mahama has committed to addressing these issues by securing reliable funding to improve the policy’s implementation and ensure a higher quality of education for students.

His stance on maintaining the Free SHS program resonated with many Ghanaians, and his decisive victory in the December 7 elections confirmed public support for his plans. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced Mahama as the winner with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.

He defeated his closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who secured 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

    26. Parliament to reconvene today after historic 2024 elections

Parliament to reconvene today after historic 2024 elections

Parliament will hold its first meeting today, Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). This marks the first session since the December 7 general elections.

The meeting follows a notice from the Speaker’s Office on December 11, confirming the venue. Earlier, on December 2, 2024, Speaker Alban Bagbin had issued a summons for Parliament to resume, stressing the importance of this gathering due to recent political changes.

The December 7 elections brought significant shifts in Ghana’s political scene, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gaining a majority in Parliament. Several prominent MPs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, KT Hammond, and Andy Appiah-Kubi, lost their seats, changing the balance of power in the legislature.

The NDC’s success extended to the presidency, with John Dramani Mahama defeating the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become President-elect.

Before the elections, the Majority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had repeatedly urged Speaker Bagbin to recall Parliament for urgent legislative matters. However, the Speaker declined, stating that Parliament would only reconvene after the elections, a decision that sparked debate among lawmakers.

Today’s session will likely focus on key post-election matters, including preparations for the transition to a new government and setting priorities for the next administration.

    27. Ghana on track to exceed IMF’s GDP growth projection of 4% for 2024 – Finance Ministry

Ghana on track to exceed IMF’s GDP growth projection of 4% for 2024 – Finance Ministry

The Ministry of Finance has stated that Ghana is on course to surpass the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) 2024 GDP growth projection of 4%.

The Ministry in a statement noted that the country continues to exceed expectations, defying challenges and solidifying its position as one of the most dynamic economies in the Africa region due to remarkable economic performance during the third quarter of 2024.

For the first three quarters of 2024, Ghana recorded an impressive average real GDP growth rate of 6.3%, a significant leap from the 2.6% recorded during the same period in 2023, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

This growth was fueled by quarterly expansions of 4.8% in Q1, 7.0% in Q2, and an outstanding 7.2% in Q3—the highest quarterly GDP growth in the last five years. The non-oil sector has been equally robust, posting an average growth rate of 6.2% for the first three quarters of 2024, compared to 2.6% in the same period last year. Quarterly growth figures for the non-oil economy were 4.3% in Q1, 6.6% in Q2, and 7.7% in Q3.

Given this stellar performance, Ghana is on track to exceed the recently revised GDP growth projection of 4% for 2024 under the 3rd Review of the IMF-supported Programme. Ghana’s post-debt restructuring growth defies global trends, where such economies typically grow at a modest 1-2%.

The Industry sector led the way with an average growth of 8.9% for the first three quarters, driven by strong performances in key sub-sectors. Mining and Quarrying recorded 15.0% growth while Construction expanded by 9.0% . The Oil and Gas sector saw an average growth of 8.6%, and Manufacturing posted 3.1% growth.

The Services sector expanded by 5.0%, buoyed by key areas such as Information and Communication, which grew by 15.9%. Financial and Insurance Activities recorded growth of 6.9%, while Accommodation and Food Services grew by 5.7%. Transport and Storage also contributed, recording growth of 3.8%.

The Agriculture sector grew by 4.6%, with significant contributions from the Crops sub-sector, which expanded by 4.6%. The livestock sub-sector recorded a steady growth rate of 4.7%.

The remarkable growth trajectory could be sustained through strategic government initiatives aimed at enhancing economic resilience and improving the living standards of all Ghanaians. Key programmes include the Planting for Food and Jobs Phase 2 Programme, SME Growth and Opportunity Programme, One District, One Factory Programme, Economic Enclave Programme, and the Ghana CARES Programme.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised Ghana’s growth rate for 2024 to 4% from 3%. Director of the African Department, Abebe Aemro Selassie, noted that the 3% projection, as captured in the World Economic Outlook, was based on mid-April 2024 data and did not factor in recent developments in Ghana.

Ghana’s economic resurgence underscores its unwavering commitment to fiscal consolidation, debt restructuring, and inclusive growth. This performance not only highlights the country’s resilience but also its ability to lead the charge in economic recovery across the region.

    28. I’ll continue to slay for God, eat even in opposition – Diana Asamoah

I’ll continue to slay for God, eat even in opposition – Diana Asamoah

After the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 elections, people online have been wondering if gospel singer Diana Asamoah will keep living her vibrant lifestyle and “slaying for Christ” on social media.

In a video that quickly went viral, Diana Asamoah explained that only those without Christ lose hope. She emphasised that with Christ on her side, she would never go hungry.

She also mentioned that even though her party lost, she will still find opportunities to work, while those who support the ruling government might struggle and go hungry in the next four years.

“So far as God is on my side, I will not go hungry regardless of my party being in opposition.

I’ll be there, and people will call me and say, Diana, I heard you have a company, so come for this. So far as this is our country and our government, we will continue to eat because we own a company,” she added.

    29. NPP’s Miracles Aboagye denies Nana Akomea’s claim that they saw their defeat in Feb 2024

NPP’s Miracles Aboagye denies Nana Akomea’s claim that they saw their defeat in Feb 2024

Spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in the 2024 general elections, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has denied claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had prior knowledge of their defeat, specifically as early as February 2024.

This statement came in response to comments made by Nana Akomea, a member of Bawumia’s campaign team, who had earlier mentioned that the NPP was aware of the likely outcome of the elections from research conducted in February.

Akomea revealed that the NPP’s research showed that John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, had a ten-point lead at that time. He also mentioned that although the gap had narrowed by October 2024, the final results aligned closely with the initial projections.

Akomea added that while the NPP expected Mahama’s victory, the scale of the margin was a surprise and warranted further examination.

Aboagye’s response, however, refutes the idea that the NPP had accepted defeat before the elections took place.

“In February and March, they [NDC] were leading with about 10 percentage points, which was quite alarming. But by September and October, it had come down to about 2 points. So we were very confident. There was new momentum, and we knew there was a lot of apathy and disgruntlement among our supporters.

Anything else would just be a projection. So the monthly polls showed us clearly [Mahama’s victory], and for a massive 2 million people to stay away, it’s really significant, and we have to find out why,” Akomea said.

However, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, speaking on Joy FM’s News File show, monitored by Ghanaweb, described Nana Akomea’s claims as inaccurate.

“Maybe he [Nana Akomea] does, but that is not accurate. That is not accurate. I mean, in February, we had just had our candidate for two months. That can’t be correct. Unless maybe Nana Akomea was referring to the polls. You know, as of 2022, it was a drastic loss.

“In fact, before Dr. Bawumia was elected, people were even wondering what kind of messaging we were going to put out and tell the people. So maybe that is what Nana Akomea was referring to.

But February was two months after Dr. Bawumia’s election—you couldn’t have even done a proper poll on him anyway, so that cannot be correct.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, emerged as the winner of the December 7, 2024, presidential election, garnering 6,328,397 votes (representing 56.55%), while the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, finished second with 4,657,304 votes (representing 41.61%).

Deputy Interior Minister denies collapse rumours after losing her seat

Deputy Minister of Interior and Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Naana Eyiah Quansah, has addressed rumours circulating on social media claiming that she collapsed and was hospitalised after losing her seat in the recent elections.

During a press conference, she urged the public and the people of Gomoa Central to ignore these false reports.

The outgoing MP, who lost her seat to an independent candidate, expressed her gratitude to the people of Gomoa Central for the privilege of serving in Parliament for two terms.

She also encouraged Ghanaians to continue supporting the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that it remains the only political party with policies designed to benefit ordinary citizens.

Sack Akufo-Addo; he has destroyed NPP – A Plus

Kwame Asare Obeng, also known as A Plus, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has called for the expulsion of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A Plus claims that Akufo-Addo’s leadership has damaged the party and its values over the past eight years. He also believes that anyone who voted against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 elections did so as a result of Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

“The NPP must come together and expel Nana Addo from the party because he has destroyed it. Everyone who voted against Dr. Bawumia did so because of Akufo-Addo,” he said during an appearance on United Showbiz.

A Plus expressed disbelief that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) even tried to campaign for the 2024 elections, considering the challenging situation.

He pointed to several controversial government decisions, such as the haircut on investments, the introduction of a betting tax, and other unpopular policies that he believed contributed to the party’s defeat. A Plus argued these actions alienated young people and worsened the financial situation for the middle class.

He called for unity within the NPP, suggesting that they remove Akufo-Addo from the party and work to rebuild it as a strong opposition that can contribute positively to Ghana’s democracy.

    33. Sacking Jean Mensa isn’t a part of Mahama’s priorities – Haruna Iddrisu

Sacking Jean Mensa isn’t a part of Mahama’s priorities – Haruna Iddrisu

Former Majority Leader and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has made it clear that President-elect John Mahama is not focused on removing Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Iddrisu, a lawyer and experienced politician, emphasised that Mahama’s priorities lie in addressing more urgent issues, particularly the country’s struggling economy, rather than any changes to the leadership of the EC.

“Why would you change the Electoral Commission Chairperson? These are not matters of primary concern to President John Mahama. I am begging you… where Jean Mensa is… she doesn’t determine who rules Ghana. Ghanaians determine who rules them,” Haruna Iddrisu stated in an interview on TV3.

His comments follow calls by Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the special aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, for the resignation of the EC Chairperson due to concerns about the Commission’s handling of the 2024 elections.

The EC faced numerous challenges during the election, including issues with biometric verification devices and the recall and reprinting of ballot papers due to a leak of the original ballots. These problems eroded public trust in the Commission, with many describing its performance as incompetent.

In an interview on GHOne TV, Mrs. Mogtari expressed surprise that Jean Mensa had not resigned after the election declaration, given the series of issues that plagued the Commission.

She argued that the EC’s performance had damaged its credibility, making it necessary to take steps to restore public confidence in future elections.

She stated, “I would have thought that she [Jean Mensa] would resign after the declaration. I don’t understand. But genuinely, considering the performance of the current Electoral Commission, what do you expect? From a very professional standpoint, if we genuinely want to move forward and start a new chapter with an independent EC, as the Constitution intended, let’s advertise the position, vet the candidates, and have Parliament handle the process. This will help remove the partisan outlook of the EC.”

    34. Akufo-Addo is not arrogant – Miracles Aboagye

Akufo-Addo is not arrogant – Miracles Aboagye

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Miracles Denis Aboagye, has disputed the claim that outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is arrogant.

Some Ghanaians have criticised the president and some of his officials for displaying arrogance during his second term, citing instances where he was accused of disrespecting traditional leaders and ignoring advice from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

However, during an appearance on Newsfile on Joy News on Saturday, December 14, Mr. Aboagye argued against this view.

He described the president as a humble person, stating that if some of his responses to criticism are perceived negatively, it doesn’t mean he is arrogant.

Based on his own experience, Aboagye described President Akufo-Addo as approachable and friendly, rejecting the label of arrogance.

“Akufo-Addo, by his persona and demeanour, may appear arrogant if you are watching him from afar.

But anyone who has worked with him, like the CSOs and even you, Samson, will disagree and say he is not arrogant,” he told Joy News’ Samson Lardy Anyenini on the show.

“I have worked with him as a presidential staffer, and I don’t think he is anywhere near arrogance. He is, however, a very firm person. He will say it as it is, and if he has a disagreement with you, he will express it directly. Such interactions can sometimes misrepresent who he really is.”

He emphasised, “These are individual perspectives, so Akufo-Addo is not arrogant.”

When discussing whether his alleged arrogance contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the election, Mr Aboagye expressed disbelief. He said the party would focus on reworking its approach to regain power in 2028.

“We need to work with our people to help them understand the circumstances under which their concerns and sentiments arose. Secondly, we must learn from this experience,” he said.

    35. “Mahama won, but Bawumia was the better candidate” – IMANI’s Kofi Bentil

“Mahama won, but Bawumia was the better candidate” – IMANI’s Kofi Bentil

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has reiterated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the outgoing Vice President and the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, remains the better choice for Ghana.

Prior to the election, Bentil strongly advocated for Dr. Bawumia on social media, encouraging Ghanaians to support him over former President John Mahama.

A week after Dr. Bawumia’s defeat to Mahama in the presidential race, Bentil reaffirmed his backing for Bawumia during a discussion on Joy News’ Newsfile, asserting that Bawumia is still the superior candidate compared to Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I still believe that Dr Bawumia is the better candidate. He [John Mahama] disagreed with me, but he has won fair and square. I wish President Mahama well. If he succeeds, he succeeds for all of us, but for me, Dr Bawumia was the better candidate,” he told Samson Lardy on the show.

According to Bentil, his belief is supported by research conducted by IMANI in February 2024, ten months before the December 7 polls.

He explained the outcome of the research, saying, “I took a principled position. What you see here is research we did in February, which showed us that it looked like President Mahama would win, but this was driven by the anger of the Ghanaian people. What I did was to say, ‘Drop your anger and look at the candidates’, and I still believe Dr Bawumia was the better candidate.”

During the same discussion, Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem in the Oti Region from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), disagreed with Kofi Bentil.

Adams argued that rather than debating which candidate was the better choice for Ghana, Bentil and IMANI Africa should have focused more on addressing the arrogance of the NPP government and other pressing social issues affecting the country.

Without allowing Mr Bentil to elaborate on his point, the MP quickly countered, saying, “They ignored the economy, ignored the arrogance, ignored the environmental destruction that was going on, and were just looking at strains.”

Meanwhile, some NPP members have argued that Dr Bawumia was punished for sins he did not commit and that the NPP lost because their members did not turn out to vote in their numbers.
