US Navy ends search for missing seals off Somalia’s coast

After a 10-day search and rescue operation, the US Navy has concluded efforts to locate two elite Seals navy force members who disappeared off Somalia’s coast on January 11.

The Seals were involved in intercepting a dhow carrying weapons when one of them fell into rough waters during the boarding process.

The second Seal attempted a rescue but neither resurfaced.

“We regret to announce that after a 10-day exhaustive search, our two missing US Navy Seals have not been located and their status has been changed to deceased,” the US Central Command said on Sunday, adding that it was “now conducting recovery operations”.

Japanese and Spanish forces, along with ships and aircraft, aided in the search, covering over 21,000 square miles in the Gulf of Aden.

The Seals were part of a naval unit focused on intercepting illegal shipments in the region, unrelated to the ongoing operation protecting vessels in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebel group.

  • Cameroon launches malaria vaccine program

    Cameroon launches malaria vaccine program

Cameroon is spearheading a historic initiative by implementing the world’s first routine vaccine program against malaria.

The World Health Organization (WHO)-approved RTS,S vaccine, developed by British pharmaceutical company GSK, will be administered to infants in Cameroon’s 42 most severely affected districts.

This marks the commencement of routine immunization against malaria, setting a precedent after successful pilot campaigns in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi.

The rollout, set to begin on Monday, is hailed as a significant milestone in the prolonged battle against malaria in Africa.

Health officials emphasize the importance of this initiative, considering it a breakthrough in the fight against the deadly disease. Twenty other countries plan to join the program later this year, according to the global vaccine alliance Gavi.

While the four-dose vaccine is approximately 30% effective, its implementation in routine immunization programs holds promise for saving thousands of children’s lives. GSK, the manufacturer, faces production limitations, producing about 15 million doses annually.

  • Why you lost him: The unseen shift within

Why you lost him: The unseen shift within

When relationships end, it’s often a sign that something within needs to change. Your breakup might not be about hurting you but rather revealing the need for personal growth. Recognize your worth, resilience, and ability to thrive independently.

His departure might be creating space for someone better suited for you. If the train of your relationship didn’t stop, it wasn’t your destined journey. Believing this empowers your mindset, shaping your reality.

Reflecting on my sister Anna’s breakup, she initially felt devastated, questioning her self-worth. Late one night, she discovered her ex’s engagement, adding to her distress. However, during our heartfelt conversation, it became evident that her chronic feeling of unworthiness was the real issue.

Blaming karma temporarily relieved her pain, but the deeper problem persisted. We explored a transformative question: “What kind of relationship do I want?” This question, often overlooked, holds the key to reshaping our perspectives and attracting positive outcomes.

Anna, initially skeptical, began outlining her desires in a partner. Shifting from a mentality of unworthiness, she took charge of her desires. I encouraged her, emphasizing that she deserves happiness. By practicing a mindset of self-esteem, she gradually replaced old beliefs.

For a month, Anna repeated affirmations, embracing the idea that it’s for the best and she deserves happiness. As she refined her ‘preferred guy’ list, he unexpectedly appeared. A co-worker at the hospital, he entered her life when she was ready to welcome him without insecurities.

The lesson learned: You can never lose what is truly meant for you. Embracing self-worth and defining your desires paves the way for a more fulfilling journey.

  • Why ketu diet may be harmful to your health

Why ketu diet may be harmful to your health

More individuals are embracing the ketogenic diet for weight loss. Also known as keto, this low-carb diet transforms the body into a fat-burning mode, prioritizing fat over carbohydrates for energy.

Initially used for refractory epilepsy, especially in children, the diet has gained popularity among the youth, who share meal plans and challenges on social media.

Common keto foods include low-fat vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli, cheese, avocado, meat, eggs, and coconut oil.

While many praise the diet for weight loss and health benefits, health officials caution against its adoption due to potential life-threatening risks.

Mr. Prince Baidoo, head of the Dietherapy Unit at Tema General Hospital, warned against the dangers of drastically reducing carbohydrates and increasing fat intake, citing potential severe effects on the liver.

He urged individuals to pursue conventional, healthy weight control methods rather than succumbing to social media trends that may lead to serious diseases.

Baidoo clarified that the ketogenic diet is reserved for patients with intermittent seizures, carefully assessed and prescribed by dieticians and medical teams.

Expressing bewilderment at healthy individuals adopting a therapy diet, he emphasized that patients on the diet are undergoing treatment, and weight loss is a side effect, not the primary goal.

Ugandan content creator breaks record by cooking for 3min

The Guinness World Record has surged in popularity, trending since late 2023, with individuals striving to etch their names in history.

The latest achiever is Ugandan content creator Raymond Kahuma, who astoundingly set a record for the quickest time to make three chapatis.

Renowned as a content creator from Uganda, Raymond Kahuma achieved this feat in an impressive 3 minutes and 10.22 seconds at a cookout in Nairobi, as acknowledged by Guinness World Records.

Excitement radiates from Kahuma as he proudly holds his two certificates, sharing a picture and detailing the techniques behind his record-breaking chapati-making.

He wrote: “So, the timer starts the moment I touch the dough. The current world record time to beat is three minutes and fourteen seconds. I rolled the first chapatti, and by 20 seconds, I was done.”

Then, as required by the Guinness World Record, he placed it on a hot frying pan and attempted to give it a round feel with his fingers.

He rolled the second chapati while the first was cooking, and at 54 seconds, he placed it on the pan. Then he rolled the third.

  • Embracing beauty and the joy of aging as a woman

Embracing beauty and the joy of aging as a woman

My bathroom shelf boasts a collection of over a dozen anti-aging creams and serums, reflecting my adherence to society’s fixation on halting the aging process.

The onset of my forties intensified my discomfort with the natural aging of my body, leading to a quest for preservation that went hand in hand with societal expectations.

However, a profound shift occurred today as I realized I had been fundamentally mistaken about the entire aging dilemma.

In a dream that unfolded more like reality TV than a movie, my older self, now in her late seventies, made a striking appearance. Gray hair peeked beneath dark chocolate highlights, and wrinkles adorned her cheeks, upper lip, and neck. Age spots, sagging abs, and thigh cellulite were present — embodying my mom’s dreaded aging fears.

Contrary to my expectations, the older me exuded contentment. She sported a broad smile, her topaz eyes radiating brightness and teasing light, unaffected by Botox interventions. Despite the visible signs of aging, she was undeniably HAPPY.

This encounter left a profound impact, prompting me to reevaluate my relationship with this future version of myself — perhaps the most significant relationship of all.

Discovering how to navigate the shame associated with aging as a woman and finding beauty and joy along the way becomes crucial in this journey of self-acceptance.

He wrote: “So, the timer starts the moment I touch the dough. The current world record time to beat is three minutes and fourteen seconds. I rolled the first chapatti, and by 20 seconds, I was done.”

Understand how we build our perceptions

As a mental health professional, I know that our entire reality is created from mental conclusions formed in early childhood. When we’re born, our minds are a clean slate, and we look at the world with innocent wonder.

As we grow older, observing our environment, we form mental conclusions about life, people — and especially about ourselves. Over the years, these mental beliefs form thick layers of human conditioning — or lenses of perception — through which life appears to us

This is what I call perceptional non-reality. Knowing this, I have to re-focus my lenses in regards to aging.

    Reevaluate your core beliefs.

I’ve been asking myself, what is my core belief about aging?

What does “getting old” mean to me? So I write down, getting older means: ugly, decline, disconnected, feeble, depression, loneliness, death.

Inspired by my dream, I cross out these words and write another, a more useful description of what getting older means to me: Maturity, wisdom, self-knowledge, self-respect, awareness, richness of life experience.

The image from my dream floats into my mind, and the realization follows: The beauty of my old self’s self-esteem is radiating brightly from within, consuming wrinkles and age spots. Her physical appearance has NOTHING to do with the emotion of happiness — the most desired state craved by all.

However, I can’t be happy and in “fighting aging” mode at the same time. I have to make the choice to be happy and old. Year after year. Otherwise, I’ll be paddling against nature, totally wasting my time on unnecessary suffering and stress — and today, EVERYONE knows that stress is not good for the skin.

    Choose to age gracefully

If I choose to age gracefully, my entire lifestyle evolves into self-love and self-care.

I choose foods that are good for my body—fresh, natural cuisine to fulfill and satisfy me. I stay active and well hydrated. I exercise my body in ways that are fun and enjoyable.

I keep my mind positive and calm. I focus on the bright side of life while accepting its dual nature. I forgive easily and smile more. I recognize no one is perfect and people do the best they can, including myself. I criticize less and praise and appreciate more.

I choose to see my future as vivid and bright, like that bouquet of candles on my birthday cake.

All these are the signs of healthy maturity — an optimistic and exciting aging quest worth celebrating.

Sister Derby firmly declines fan’s plea to give him a baby

In response to a fan’s earnest plea for her to have children soon, 40-year-old Sister Derby made it abundantly clear that raising children is a costly responsibility.

The fan even offered to financially support her, but Sister Derby emphasized the lifelong care and protection children require, underscoring the weight of such a significant responsibility.

Sister Derby, in her response, expressed that she is not willing to have children merely for the sake of it, emphasizing the profound commitment and challenges associated with parenting.

In a recent interview on Okay FM, Sister Derby revealed her reluctance to enter into another relationship, citing past heartbreaks as the reason.

“Whenever I am in a relationship, I go all out for the person. I always put the people I love ahead of my needs. When I am in a relationship, I invest all my energy and resources which ends up draining me and slowing me down. I get turned off when I realize the affection is only one-sided.” Sister Derby revealed.

Following her breakup with rapper Medikal, Sister Derby attempted to move on by entering another relationship with David. However, this relationship also came to an end, with both parties unfollowing each other on social media and deleting all traces of their time together.

Sister Derby, once enthusiastic about her relationship with David, seems to have officially given up on the connection, evident in her social media actions and the removal of a promise ring.

Despite the challenges, Sister Derby remains steadfast in her decisions regarding relationships and parenthood.

‘I have seen the outcome of the Ghana vs Mozambique match in the realms of the spirit’ – Prophet Oja

Prophet Oja, who recently garnered attention on social media due to a failed prophecy about Mohammed Kudus, has once again shared his insights, this time focusing on the senior national team’s upcoming match.

Ghana is gearing up for its final Group B game against Mozambique at 8 pm today, and Prophet Oja claims to have witnessed the game twice in the spiritual realms.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, he asserted that he already knows the outcome of the game.

In a suspenseful revelation to his church members, the spiritual leader teased that he would like to disclose the accurate scoreline, keeping them in anticipation.

Prophet Oja’s recent boastful statements have once again subjected him to ridicule in online discussions.

Many social media users are questioning the authenticity of Prophet Oja’s claim that he watched the match twice in the spiritual realms, pointing out that if this were true, he wouldn’t be uncertain about the country Ghana is playing against.

Measures are in place to reduce inflation and enhance economic growth in 2024 – BoG Governor

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, stated that the Central Bank is on track to significantly reduce inflation and that his organization expects it to ease even further.

He claims that this is supported by maintaining the application of sensible policies until inflation expectations are firmly fixed on the single-digit target.

“In this regard, the Bank of Ghana will continue to monitor both domestic and external developments and respond appropriately to ensure that the downward inflation trajectory observed in recent months is sustained without undermining growth. The 2023 experience of a strong reduction in inflation and stronger growth is instructive”, the Governor disclosed at a meeting involving the Country Representative of the International Monetary Fund and the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“During our last interaction, I had stressed on steadfast commitment from all sides and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) will work on delivering its mandate on price and financial stability. The recent trends in inflation that the economy has witnessed in the course of 2023 suggest that we are on course”, he added.

One year ago, in January 2023, inflation stood at approximately 54%. However, due to robust and innovative policies, stringent monetary conditions, and a relatively stable exchange rate, the Governor highlighted that inflation has been reduced by more than half by the close of 2023, currently standing at 23.0%.

The Governor further emphasized that several factors have contributed to this disinflationary trend. These factors include the consistent monetary policy stance maintained throughout 2023, the stability of crude oil prices resulting in steady fuel prices and a positive impact on transportation costs, a comparatively stable exchange rate environment, increased foreign exchange reserves through the gold for reserve program, and favorable climatic conditions positively affecting the food supply chain process.

    IMF programme and beyond

He added that with a successful conclusion of the first review of the IMF Programme, “we need to begin to think of the second review of the programme and beyond”.

While tentative indications point to sound implementation of policies through to December 2023, he stressed that vigilance and commitment will be needed in 2024 to undertake all the structural reforms envisaged under the programme.

“Implementation of these reforms to ensure the economy functions well will be critical”, he concluded.

National Peace Council reaffirms dedication to resolving Bawku conflict

The National Peace Council assures Ghanaians of its unwavering commitment to address and potentially bring an end to the Bawku conflict.

Chairman Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi emphasizes ongoing engagements despite the conflict’s resurgence, aiming for a peaceful resolution.

“The situation is becoming much more difficult but on our part, we have not given up. The Otumfuo committee is actively working. The Inter-Ethnic committee is also working and we hope that given a little bit more time, there might be some way to resolve the conflict,” he said.

He was speaking on January 19, 2024, on JoyFM’s Top Story.

In order to motivate the security personnel to give their all in resolving the conflict, Rev. Dr. Gyamfi urged the public to support them rather than scrutinize them.

“We need to support the military and the police to bring stability to the area. Sometimes, I think that an attack on the military and the police is wrong because if we lose them, then we don’t have anybody there to help us,”he said.

His remarks come in the wake of the rekindled Bawku conflict, resulting in the loss of five lives within the past 48 hours.

Amidst this tragic situation, another distressing incident unfolded as a bus, transporting around 45 students from the Presbyterian Nurses Training College in Bawku, fell prey to an ambush by two armed individuals on motorcycles near Binduri in the Upper East region on Friday.

Several students sustained injuries during the attack and were promptly rushed to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital for medical attention.

Reports from JoyNews indicate that the students, who had recently concluded their term, were en route to Bolgatanga when the two assailants on motorbikes launched the ambush.

  • Inadequate funding hampers SMEs’ capacity to tap into EU market

Inadequate funding hampers SMEs’ capacity to tap into EU market

Team leader at Compete Ghana Technical Assistance, Nicholas Gebara, has highlighted that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face challenges in meeting the substantial demands of the European Union (EU) market due to a shortage of financial support and technical expertise.

“It is quite challenging when a client from the EU makes a big order; most SMEs are not able to meet such demands since they produce in relatively small quantities,” he said.

He urged small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to organize themselves effectively and establish robust structures to meet the market requirements of the European Union (EU). Emphasizing the need for increased collaboration between the government and the private sector, he suggested that such partnerships are crucial to enabling SMEs to capitalize on export opportunities within the EU.

Mr. Gebara highlighted that this collaborative approach would facilitate capacity building, providing easier access to financial support and training for SME owners.

These concerns and recommendations were shared by the team leader during discussions with journalists at the closing ceremony of the Compete Ghana Programme.

Funded by the EU through the Ghana-European Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (iEPA), the Compete Ghana Programme aimed to enhance the capabilities of 40 traders from both large companies and SMEs. The initiative sought to encourage participants to leverage the benefits of the iEPA.

The program operated at two levels: firstly, at the institutional level, it focused on building the capacity of public institutions to streamline regulatory frameworks related to the iEPA. Simultaneously, it guided the private sector in meeting the requirements and maximizing the benefits of the agreement. The second level involved working directly with the private sector to promote the advantages available to them and encourage local exporters to seize export opportunities to the EU under the iEPA.

The iEPA agreement between Ghana and the EU commenced in 2016 with the objective of establishing a more competitive trading relationship between the two entities.

Under this agreement, EU companies gained the ability to trade and invest in Ghana, producing goods for export to the broader African market. The elimination of tariffs on intermediary goods and machinery from the EU under the iEPA resulted in more affordable inputs for Ghanaian production.

Deputy Minister for Trade, Oheneba Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei, commended the Compete Ghana Programme, stating that it exemplifies the power of partnerships in enhancing trade capabilities and fostering sustainable development opportunities.

“The Compete Ghana Programme has been instrumental in promoting innovation, enhancing competitiveness and creating a conducive environment for business to thrive,” she highlighted.

Afua Asantewaa thanks Bawumia for voice restoration support in Guinness World Record pursuit

Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum, the audacious contender aiming for a Guinness World Record in a sing-a-thon, has conveyed her gratitude to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for securing a voice-restoring medication to aid in her recovery post-marathon.

In a bid to surpass the current record of 105 hours established by an Indian in 2012, Afua Asantewaa embarked on an extraordinary five-day singing marathon that commenced at midnight on Sunday, December 24, and concluded at 7:00 am on December 29. Despite encountering various challenges on and off the stage throughout the marathon, she persevered, garnering praise and admiration.

Afua showcased an uninterrupted vocal performance for an impressive duration of five days, six hours, and 55 minutes, capturing the hearts of audiences across diverse sectors, including the corporate world.

Regrettably, she faced a setback along the way as she lost her voice. Acknowledging her determination, Dr. Bawumia promptly ordered a voice-restoring medication to aid her in the record attempt.

Unfortunately, the drug arrived after she had successfully completed the marathon.

Even though Afua had concluded her attempt before the drug’s arrival, she expressed genuine appreciation for Dr. Bawumia’s considerate gesture.

Taking to social media, she shared her sentiments, stating, “Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia H.E. the Vice president of Ghana, ordered a drug to restore my lost voice during my record attempt, unfortunately, it arrived after I ended at 126 hours 52mins. This is very humbling, and I appreciate this gesture.”

  • Dominican Republic to pilot 4-day work week

Dominican Republic to pilot 4-day work week

In a groundbreaking move, the Dominican Republic is set to become the first Caribbean nation to experiment with a four-day work week starting in February.

This six-month pilot program, following similar trials in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, will be voluntary for companies and won’t entail a pay cut for participating employees.

The initiative responds to growing demands for a shorter work week, fueled by discussions during the COVID-19 era highlighting that extended, in-person work hours may not necessarily equate to higher productivity.

What is the Dominican Republic’s four-day work week trial?

Starting in February, businesses in the Dominican Republic have the option to partake in a six-month trial of a four-day work week.

During this experimental phase, the standard workweek will reduce from 44 to 36 hours, spanning Monday through Thursday, while employees maintain their regular salaries.

Participating companies include the government’s national health insurance agency, power company EGE Haina, Claro (a Latin American telecommunications firm), and IMCA (a heavy equipment business).

A local university is entrusted with analyzing the trial’s outcomes, examining potential health changes in workers and assessing the impact on their work-life balance.

How does a four-day work week actually … work?

In a four-day work week, the workload typically remains the same. But companies, managers and their teams are forced to prioritise even more than they otherwise have to, cutting out, perhaps, some meetings.

But there’s something else too that a four-day week model must emphasise, according to the Dominican Republic’s Labour Minister Luis Miguel de Camps.

US politics, Canada’s multiculturalism, South America’s geopolitical rise—we bring you the stories that matter.

“It prioritises people, improving health and wellbeing, and promoting a sustainable and environmentally friendly productivity,” said de Camps.

Where has a four-day work week been trialled — and what happened?

n response to the evolving landscape of work brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous countries worldwide have either experimented with or implemented legislation for a four-day work week. The United Kingdom conducted its most extensive trial of a four-day work week in 2023, involving 61 companies, of which 56 extended the trial, and 18 made the shift permanent. Approximately 2,900 employees participated in the pilot, leading to reduced stress levels, improved work-life balance, and better sleep for 40 percent of respondents.

The UK trial revealed additional benefits:

Decreased Sick Leave: Employees took less sick leave as they had more time for physical and mental recuperation from work-related stress.

Enhanced Gender Parity: Men contributed more to household and family responsibilities during three-day weekends.

In Japan, where overwork-related deaths claimed nearly 3,000 lives in 2022, major companies like Microsoft have also tested and reported positive outcomes with the four-day work week.

    Are there other success stories?

Iceland trialled a shorter work week between 2015 and 2019. Approximately 2,500 public sector employees participated in it.

The results: Workers were less stressed, and productivity did not suffer.

The trial, that Iceland’s labour unions renegotiated contracts for more than 85 percent of the country’s workforce to reduce work hours.

But are all four-day work weeks the same?

In February 2022, Belgium became the first European country to legislate a shorter work week. Employees can choose to work four days a week instead of five, without losing their salary.

But there’s a catch: They must still work 40 hours. In other words, those who choose the four-day work week must work 10 hours a day.

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates government announced that all public sector organisations would operate for four and a half days per week. However, employees in the country still spend some of the highest hours at work, at an average of 52.6 hours per week per employed person.

How about going longer rather than shorter?

In India, recent calls for a 70-hour week have sparked heated debate.

In 2023, Narayana Murthy, the iconic co-founder of Indian multinational technology company Infosys, made the recommendation saying it could boost productivity and the country’s economy.

India’s economy is already the fastest-growing among G20 nations. And Indians already work an average of 47.7 hours a week, which is higher than the 36.4 average in the United States or 36.6 in Japan, according to the International Labour Organisation.

In China, some firms practice a “996” work culture, in which employees work from 9am to 9pm, six days a week. The average work week, however, is 46.1 hours.

Still, Murthy suggested that the younger generation is not hardworking enough.

“India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world. Our youngsters must say: This is my country, I want to work 70 hours a week,” he said during a podcast. India’s labour unions have hit back at Murthy’s comments.

The nine-month conflict has caused thousands of casualties and displaced millions of civilians, escalating tensions within the region.

This move follows the government’s decision to freeze relations with IGAD ahead of a meeting in Uganda, accusing the bloc of setting a “dangerous precedent” by inviting RSF head Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo.

Argentina detains expels family of wanted Ecuadorean gang leader

The wife and children of Adolfo Macías Villamar, a wanted Ecuadorean gang leader known as Fito, have been detained and expelled from Argentina.

Argentina’s security minister emphasized that the action sends a clear message that the country is unwelcoming to narco-criminals.

Fito escaped from an Ecuadorean prison earlier this month, leading to a nationwide search in Ecuador, which is currently under a state of emergency.

Authorities in Argentina released footage of individuals with links to Fito being escorted by police on an air force plane.

The detainees, totaling eight individuals, including associates and family members, were apprehended at a property in the region of Córdoba and subsequently returned to Ecuador.

Argentina’s Interior Minister stressed that the country will not harbor criminals.

This development coincides with Ecuador’s ongoing efforts to locate Fito and address the gang-related disorder contributing to the country’s crisis. Fito, the leader of the Los Choneros gang, is accused of orchestrating previous prison violence and disappeared from his cell in Guayaquil.

He has also been linked to the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, an anti-corruption presidential candidate who was shot dead last August.

In the aftermath of the escape, Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa declared war on the country’s gangs and imposed tough security conditions, a stance which has been met with unprecedented levels of violence by Ecuador’s gangs.

Earlier this week, authorities said they had regained control of the country’s prisons after days of rioting – but the country’s most wanted fugitive remains elusive.

Mr Noboa has called on authorities in neighbouring Colombia – where several powerful drug cartels are based – to begin searching for Fito, according to AFP news agency.

He has also reiterated plans to deport foreign criminals in a bid to alleviate overcrowding in Ecuador’s volatile prisons.

  • Supreme Court backs President Ruto’s Healthcare Fund

Supreme Court backs President Ruto’s Healthcare Fund

In a notable decision, the Kenyan Court of Appeal has overturned a previous ban and given the green light to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), a contentious healthcare insurance levy championed by President William Ruto.

The SHIF aims to provide affordable healthcare to all Kenyans but has faced widespread criticism, with many viewing it as a new tax that could exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis, leading to protests last year.

The High Court had halted the SHIF’s rollout in November following a petition by businessman Joseph Enock Aura, challenging certain aspects of the scheme.

The suspension, along with the halting of a controversial housing levy, prompted President Ruto to accuse unnamed judges of corruption and claim that the judiciary was colluding with the opposition to hinder government projects, triggering protests from lawyers.

Replacing the decades-old National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which has suffered significant losses to corruption, the SHIF has undergone legal scrutiny.

The three-judge bench, while lifting the ban, suspended sections requiring mandatory registration to the scheme, citing concerns about the potential harm to the health rights of citizens not involved in the litigation.

President Ruto has taken a series of unpopular measures since he took office in 2022

All workers are expected to contribute 2.75% of their salaries towards the new health fund.

The new law does not address what happens when individuals cannot afford contributions but President Ruto said his government would pay for those unable.

Critics of the new health plan say the 2.75% deduction is a huge increase on what they paid to the NHIF, coming on top of the recent rise in fuel prices and living costs.

Some also fear that the new social healthcare body will spend most of the collected funds on administrative expenses like the current NHIF, leaving few resources for direct healthcare costs.

In June last year, Mr Ruto signed the Finance Act, another unpopular piece of legislation that introduced a 1.5% housing levy payable by both employers and employees.

The government says it seeks to provide affordable housing to low income earners. The levy has also been challenged in court.

School dormitory fire in Central China kills 13

A devastating fire in a school dormitory in Yanshanpu village, Henan province, central China, has claimed the lives of thirteen people, according to reports from China’s Xinhua state news agency.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday night at a privately-run school catering to nursery and primary age pupils. The school manager has been detained, and an investigation is underway.

The fire, which was extinguished less than an hour after firefighters were alerted, has left one person hospitalized in stable condition.

Official details about the victims’ identities or the fire’s cause have not been disclosed.

China has witnessed several fatal fires due to inadequate enforcement of building and safety standards. In November, 26 people lost their lives in a large fire in Luliang City, Shanxi province.

Another tragic incident occurred in Beijing in April, where a hospital fire claimed at least 29 lives, mostly patients, leading to a police investigation resulting in 12 detentions.

The harrowing footage from that incident depicted people escaping the flames by climbing out of windows onto air conditioning units.

  • Controversy sparks over auction of Nelson Mandela’s personal items in South Africa

Controversy sparks over auction of Nelson Mandela’s personal items in South Africa

An auction featuring 70 personal items belonging to anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela, including his iconic shirts, is facing opposition from the South African government.

The auction, organized by Mandela’s eldest daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, is under scrutiny as the government asserts that the items rightfully belong to the nation.

Among the items are hearing aids, an ID card, gifts from world leaders, and clothing like Mandela’s distinctive “Madiba” shirts. South Africa contends that, under the country’s laws, items deemed part of the national heritage cannot be taken out of the country.

The South African Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra), responsible for safeguarding the nation’s history and culture, has filed an appeal to block the sale.

The appeal has been supported by the sport, arts and culture ministry. Minister Zizi Kodwa said it was was backing the case “for the sake of maintaining the country’s rich heritage”.

He added that blocking the sale was necessary as Mandela “is integral to South Africa’s heritage”.

“It is thus important that we preserve the legacy of former President Mandela and ensure that his life’s work experiences remain in the country for generations to come.”

In 2021, the South African government opposed the proposed auction of Nelson Mandela’s personal items, claiming some were national artifacts. This led to the cancellation of the 2022 auction and initiated a two-year legal battle. Last month, the High Court in Pretoria granted Ms. Mandela permission to proceed with the sale, challenging the government’s assertion that the items held national heritage status.

Despite the court’s decision, the government, through Sahra and the culture ministry, has filed a request to appeal, citing concerns over the “unpermitted export for exhibition or sale” of the items. The auction, scheduled for January 22, faces uncertainty pending the appeal’s outcome.

The listed items, including hearing aids and Mandela’s iconic shirts, could fetch substantial amounts at the New York-based Guernsey’s auction house, with estimates reaching up to $20,000 and $70,000, respectively.

While Ms. Mandela plans to allocate auction proceeds to a memorial garden in Mandela’s honor, the government’s opposition has generated mixed reactions in South Africa. Some argue for the preservation of these “priceless” items, while others believe the matter should be left to the discretion of Mandela’s family.

Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid hero, passed away in 2013 at the age of 95, leaving an enduring legacy for his role in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.

  • Suspected air strike kills 4 Iranian security forces in Damascus

In what is believed to be an air strike on the Syrian capital, four senior members of Iran’s security forces, including military advisers, lost their lives.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard has attributed the attack to Israel, a country that has frequently conducted strikes on Iranian-linked targets in Syria.

The incident occurred in the Mazzeh neighborhood, southwest Damascus, a region housing a military airport, UN headquarters, embassies, and restaurants.

Videos depicting the aftermath, including a large cloud of smoke and damaged buildings, have circulated, though their authenticity remains unverified.

This event follows heightened tensions in the region since Hamas’s attacks on Israel in early October.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in more than 24,900 casualties, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, since Israel initiated its military response. Israel states that its ground and air operations in Gaza are aimed at dismantling Hamas.

The escalating conflict has sparked concerns about the potential for a broader war in the region, particularly between long-standing adversaries Israel and Iran.

Tehran supports various groups throughout the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.

Additionally, Iran backs groups in Iraq and Syria, contributing to the complexity and volatility of the regional landscape.

  • Félix Tshisekedi’s promise: War or peace for DR Congo and Rwanda?

Félix Tshisekedi’s promise: War or peace for DR Congo and Rwanda?

Félix Tshisekedi is taking the oath for a second term as the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, amidst a tumultuous and disputed election.

With over 70% of the population living in extreme poverty and a backdrop of decades-long conflict, Tshisekedi faces the formidable task of improving the nation’s fortunes over the next five years.

The central question looms: Can President Tshisekedi usher in the long-awaited peace for DR Congo, or have heightened violence and his campaign promise to engage in conflict with neighboring Rwanda thwarted those prospects?

Throughout both of his presidential campaigns, Tshisekedi has pledged to address the unrest in eastern DR Congo, where numerous armed groups, including the notorious M23, vie for control of land and the region’s rich mineral resources, such as gold, diamonds, and cobalt essential for mobile phones and electric cars.

Despite a temporary lull in conflict last year, tensions flared again, leading to a record 6.9 million people being displaced, according to the UN.

To effectively resolve these issues, Tshisekedi must shift his focus from “short-term” military initiatives to implementing lasting solutions, emphasizes Richard Moncrieff, the Great Lakes Project director at the International Crisis Group (ICG), in conversation with the BBC.

President Tshisekedi and other African leaders had started negotiations – known as the Nairobi and Luanda processes – in an attempt to ease DR Congo’s insecurity through military and political strategies. However, these talks appear to have stalled.

The Congolese president hasn’t paid keen attention to any of the peace processes, Mr Moncrieff argues, adding: “He needs to build for the long term in terms of reforming his security sector… and not place so much trust in very, very unreliable short-term solutions.”

Military initiatives taken by the president in his first term include declaring a state of siege in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, in 2021.

He attempted to restore order by appointing military leaders to replace the civil administration in the areas.

Additionally, the president pushed for a recruitment drive that led to thousands of young people joining the army, while launching a disarmament operation aimed at reintegrating members of armed groups into civilian life.

Critics point out that these initiatives have failed to reduce fighting in the east, even though Mr Tshisekedi insists they have borne fruit.

He told MPs in November there had been a “reduction of cross-border mining and customs fraud which fuels conflicts”, as well as an improvement in intercommunity tensions and “the reestablishment of state authority”.

The president has also said getting rid of an East African force set up to curb DR Congo’s conflict, and replacing it with a southern African one, will help to reduce insecurity.

In October 2023, DR Congo’s government said it would not extend the East Africa Community (EAC) Regional Force’s mandate after months of Kinshasa complaining about the troops’ ineffectiveness.

Last month, the Congolese foreign minister said troops from the southern African bloc SADC had been given the mandate “to support the Congolese army in fighting and eradicating the M23 and other armed groups that continue to disrupt peace and security”.

Residents of Bambo in Rutshuru territory, 60 kilometers north of Goma, the capital of North Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, flee as the M23 attacked the town on October 26, 2023.

It remains to be seen whether SADC can contain DR Congo’s multiplicity of militias, which the forces before them, including the UN peacekeepers who have been in the country since 1999, have failed to do.

The UN mission, known as Monusco, is set to complete its withdrawal from DR Congo at the end of this year – after President Tshisekedi’s government deemed them to be ineffective.

Alongside cutting ties with forces from the UN and EAC, President Tshisekedi has threatened to go to war with Rwanda.

“If you re-elect me and Rwanda persists… I will request parliament and Congress to authorise a declaration of war. We will march on Kigali,” he said in December, in his final campaign rally.

Accusing Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, President Félix Tshisekedi finds himself at the center of escalating regional tensions. A 2023 UN report, backed by the US, mirrors these allegations, though Rwanda vehemently denies them, countering with claims that DR Congo supports Hutu rebels staging attacks in Rwanda.

While President Tshisekedi has previously threatened to attack Rwanda, critics argue that these pledges were political maneuvers aimed at securing the nationalist vote. Despite Rwanda’s warning that those wishing for its destruction would “experience it instead,” Tshisekedi’s recent vow raises concerns about potential repercussions and the impact on regional stability.

Rwanda’s formidable military reputation, contrasted with DR Congo’s history of corruption and ill-discipline within its armed forces, underscores the complexity of such a situation. Analysts suggest that Tshisekedi may find it challenging to retract from the bellicose rhetoric employed during the election campaign.

In DR Congo, achieving peace extends beyond defeating armed groups like M23. Tshisekedi faces expectations to facilitate dialogue among the nation’s diverse ethnic groups, addressing longstanding disputes that previous leaders have struggled to resolve. Additionally, the political turmoil stemming from the disputed elections further complicates the landscape as Tshisekedi assumes office.

Discover Ghana’s harmonic twins Dope Nation surfing the Amapiano craze

B2 and Twist, the inseparable twins constituting Dope Nation, share not only an unbreakable bond as identical twins but also the distinction of being award-winning producers and a highly accomplished recording duo.

For them, collaborating is akin to partnering with a mirrored version of oneself, only enhanced.

Their journey began at university, where they crafted chart-topping hits for renowned artists, and today, they boast collaborations with names like Shattawale, Joey B, and Olamide.

The twins attribute their success to the power of word of mouth, a testament to their undeniable talent and musical prowess.

“Back in school we’d just be in the hall and an artist would pull up, and enter the hall looking for us,” they recall.

“Making beats for these artists and releasing them, we got to understand how our songs would be big if we were artists ourselves.”

    Their intuition proved accurate.

The debut track, “Eish,” launched in 2018, proved to be a resounding success, setting the stage for a string of subsequent hits.

In 2022, they introduced “Gboza,” a track deeply infused with the amapiano genre from South Africa. Dope Nation uniquely coined the term “Ghanapiano” to describe their distinctive sound. Just a year later, they unveiled a seven-track EP aptly titled “Ghanapiano.”

“Ghanapiano is a musical experiment for us… a new genre fusing amapiano to our Ghanaian high life and hiplife,” they explain.

When Champuru Makhenzo, a South African DJ and producer, visited Ghana, Dope Nation had the opportunity to learn from him.

“He brought his laptop and we were checking out the samples and how he was recording,” the twins tell me.

“You know the Afrobeats bounce is different from the amapiano bounce – amapiano is laid-back – and he was just showing us everything… Like he’s cooking the same type of food but in a different way.”

The two bounced ideas back and forth.

“We also showed him what we could do, and he realised like: ‘You guys are dope’. So it was through that experience we birthed Ghanapiano.”

  • Ex-Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma allowed medical travel amidst coup trial

Ex-Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma allowed medical travel amidst coup trial

Former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma has been granted permission by the High Court to travel to Nigeria for medical treatment, even as he faces trial for an alleged coup attempt.

The court-approved leave spans a maximum of three months, described by Sierra Leone’s current president as a “humanitarian gesture.”

However, speculation suggests a potential exile arrangement. Bai Koroma’s treason trial is scheduled for March.

The former president, who led Sierra Leone for 11 years until 2018, left on a Nigerian presidential jet from Freetown International Airport on Friday afternoon.

Amid ongoing speculation, there are indications that the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) may have facilitated a deal between the Sierra Leone government and the 70-year-old former president, Ernest Bai Koroma, allowing him to travel to Nigeria.

This move aims to ease tensions following the November unrest and has prompted President Julius Maada Bio to address the nation.

In his Thursday night speech, President Bio emphasized that the matter of his predecessor’s travel lies solely within the jurisdiction of the judiciary.

“The courts have, therefore, granted the application for the former President to depart from the country purely for specialised medical reasons, and his trial will be suspended for the duration of his absence,” he said.President Bio said it did not in any way detract from the seriousness of the ongoing trials, and that it was further proof that “the trial is not a political witch-hunt but one aimed at unravelling the truth behind the events of 26 November”.

That attack saw armed assailants storm a military barracks and prisons, freeing around 2,000 inmates, the authorities said. At least 21 people were killed in the violence.

The government said this amounted to an attempt to overthrow it, and in subsequent weeks more than 80 people were arrested as suspects – many of them belonging to Sierra Leone’s military.

The former president’s daughter, Dankay Koroma, has previously been named on a list of suspects wanted by police investigating the failed coup. She has not commented.

The attempted coup came five months after a disputed election which saw President Bio narrowly re-elected for a second term.

The results were rejected by Mr Koroma’s All People’s Congress. International observers also criticised the elections, highlighting a lack of transparency in the count.
