  • Pappy Kojo nearly walked out of UTV studios, here is why

On the United Showbiz broadcast on July 22, host Mr. Logic and Ghanaian singer Pappy Kojo got into a heated fight that nearly caused the musician to leave the premises.

Pappy Kojo’s comments about Yvonne Nelson’s memoir and Sarkodie’s rejoinder were still being discussed, and Mr. Logic requested that Pappy Kojo apologize to Yvonne Nelson.

If Mr. Logic truly respected women, Pappy Kojo would have asked him to apologize for his comments regarding Feli Nuna when she made an appearance on United Showbiz.

Below is the transcript of what transpired between Pappy Kojo and Mr Logic:

Mr Logic: I am saying that I am making references to what I saw. I am saying that Yvonne is your friend (referring to Pappy Kojo). I cannot say what you guys share.

Pappy Kojo: How did you know Yvonne is my friend?

Mr Logic: Don’t you have pictures with her?

Pappy Kojo: Does that make her my friend?

Mr Logic: Ah, do you think I am a child?

Pappy Kojo: Does taking a picture with someone mean I am the person’s friend?

Mr Logic: Is she, not your friend that you have both videos and pictures with her?

Pappy Kojo: No, if you are talking calm down; it’s like you want to fight me

Mr Logic: I am fighting you for what exactly?

Pappy Kojo: The same energy you gave to Feli Nuna…

Mr Logic: Pappy, the energy you brought is the same energy I came with because already I came in peace but if you want trouble then me too I will bring mine.

Pappy Kojo: As I said, I didn’t come here…… let me tell you what I am talking about. You are here trying to defend Yvonne; Yvonne is as a woman the same way Fela Nuna is. So, if you are going to defend Yvonne, it’s either it’s because she has money or she’s famous or you are seeing Yvonne that’s why you defend Yvonne but Yvonne is a woman like Fela Nuna so if Fela Nuna comes here and you guys disrespect Fela Nuna, I don’t see why right now you are sitting here trying to defend Yvonne like the conversation is not ……

Mr Logic: Let me respond to him. The time Fela Nuna came here, you were not here. You watched from home and I’m telling you that when Feli came here, maybe because you were just watching from home, you thought we were pushing her around. Did you see how it started?

Pappy Kojo: I saw what I saw my guy…

Mr Logic: If you respect Feli Nuna enough to ask me to apologise to her then you should respect Yvonne enough for you to apologise to her for the mockery you made of her. Yes, you are laughing. I am telling you.

Pappy Kojo: So let me ask you; what happened to support Ghana music; what happened to support your brother?

    Mr Logic: Support which brother?

    Pappy Kojo: Sarkodie

Mr Logic: What has Sark done? How am I against Sark?

Pappy Kojo: Right now, the music we do, it’s not just raps. It comes with TikTok challenge, it comes with a whole lot. Maybe, Sark doesn’t do TikTok challenge but we need to push the song but I Pappy Kojo will do the TikTok challenge for my brother. What about that?

Mr Logic: If you tell me what you did is support your brother then it’s a lie because the song, we all know the background. It’s not so tastable…

Pappy Kojo: You can’t say that; that’s disrespectful to Sarkodie, you can’t say that. Someone does a song and you sit on TV and say it’s not tastable, what are you talking about?

Mr Logic: A song that you use course words and you yourself said you are not proud of it, what are you talking about?

Pappy Kojo: My guy, he does rap. I don’t know why I have to come here and tolerate this disrespect. I am a winning award artist, you can’t let him talk to me like that, you understand?

Pappy Kojo who claims he was disrespected stood up, took a bite of bread and called his team to leave the studio but the host of United Showbiz MzGee and other pundits asked him to return which he did.

Maurice Steijn wants Kudus to stay for one more year

Head coach of Ajax, Maurice Steijn, is doing all in his power to encourage Mohammed Kudus to stay with the team for an additional year in an effort to retain the talent of their valuable midfielder.

Kudus is receiving a lot of attention and interest from several clubs, and Steijn’s will to keep the excellent player underscores the significant part the Ghanaian star plays in the Dutch football superpower.

“I feel that when Kudus decides to stay for one more year, the real top clubs will then come for him,” he said.

“If we win the league and he scores 20 goals, clubs will pay double for him. This is what we are trying to tell him now,”

On July 16, 2020, Mohammed Kudus joined de Godenzonen. The 22-year-old midfielder made 30 appearances, contributed to 11 goals and three assists last season.

The rumors in England on Saturday claim that Chelsea has contacted Ajax to express interest in Mohammed Kudus. The midfielder has several suitors interested in his services, including Brighton, Newcastle United, and Arsenal.

Daniel Amartey pledges to give his all after signing for Besiktas

Gifted athlete, Daniel Amartey has joined Besiktas this week and has since shown his unbridled joy and dedication to his new team.

He is prepared to leave his mark on the hearts of supporters and etch his name in the annals of football history with a commitment to give it his best on the field.

The Black Stars defender took to his Twitter page to tweet: “A new chapter begins with @Besiktas. Excited and Ready to give it my ALL,”

After the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign in the English Premier League, the experienced defender’s contract with Leicester City expired, and he became a free agent. Seizing the opportunity, the player decided to join a Turkish club for the next chapter of his career.

The Turkish club wasted no time in securing the talented player’s services, signing him on a contract that will extend until 2026. With this move, the versatile player is all set to once again showcase his skills in European football.

The transfer process went smoothly, thanks to the player’s early arrival in Turkey, allowing him to undergo a thorough medical examination as per standard protocol before finalizing the transfer.

Late on Friday, Besiktas officially confirmed the deal through a statement on their website, expressing their clear intentions and ambitions for the upcoming season.

  • Sarkodie’s ‘Try Me’ song was not leaked – Mr. Logic discloses

Sarkodie’s assertion that his most recent song, “Try Me,” was leaked and did not have the support of his team and allies has been refuted by radio personality Mr. Logic.

On the July 22 episode of UTV’s United Showbiz, Mr. Logic stated that Yvonne Nelson, to whom the Try Me track was intended, deserves an apology from Sarkodie.

“He apologized because it had to do with a woman, if it was a man, he would have defended his view. He has yet to speak on the matter here at home… when it started, he should have spoken and cleared the air,” Mr. Logic explained.

In response to the argument that the song was a “personal” endeavor that had been leaked, Logic suggested the musician should return.

“But to tell us his team did not know of the track and he sneaked out to record it and all. He is too big for such trivial information because of his brand and its implications… he should have apologized from the onset.

“Sark messed up, he has accepted that he was wrong, he owes Yvonne Nelson and womanhood. That the song leaked was a lie, it did not, we are not kids,” he fired.

Sarkodie commented for the first time on the entire Yvonne Nelson incident, where he was reprimanded for beating Yvonne harshly due to information in her memoir about their past relationship that led to her aborting his child.

In the “no holds barred” interview, the touring artist talked to an American YouTube TV station.

I wept – Sarkodie recounts how he mourned his lawyer

Sarkodie recently revealed that he has never experienced sadness in his life until the passing of his lawyer, Cynthia Quarcoo, which brought tears to his eyes.

The rapper claimed that he has never experienced sadness since he has always valued every circumstance, according to GhanaWeb’s monitoring of his remarks on Way Up with Angela Yee.

“I’m the type of person that can just move forward,” he said. “I just appreciate whatever that’s happening looking at how I turned out to be and that’s what I care about.”

He continued: “My biggest problem which is my blessing is that I always appreciate every situation. My sister sent me a text message asking ‘Have I ever been sad?’ because they never seen me like that before. I only cried recently because of my lawyer but it’s rare to catch me being sad about something.”

According to reports, Cynthia Quarcoo passed away on June 21 at the age of 52.

Cynthia Quarcoo had a big impact on the entertainment sector in addition to her legal career. She was notably the brains behind Africa 1 Media, a renowned talent management and public relations company that collaborated with a number of Ghanaian performers. Her work fostered and promoted homegrown musicians in the Ghanaian music scene.

Sarkodie expressed on his social media page how difficult it would be for him to move on after hearing the news of her passing.

“So many memories it’s going to be real hard to get over this. Mama Cee!! At least you should’ve told me you aren’t feeling well but knowing you I know you hate us feeling bad for you. You left exactly how you wanted (strong) a classic Mama C,” the rapper wrote.

“It was unusual I hadn’t heard from you in these few days because knowing my Mama Cee she will be the first person to text me worried then tease me…sent you a WhatsApp asking ‘Mama C na mentee wonka oo’ [I’ve not heard from you] but after several hours seeing two ticks I felt something was wrong then they broke the news to me.”

“We know what you would love for all of us (to be strong ) we will try of us ( to be strong ) we will try Mama C! J. Condolences to the family and friends, especially the children…let’s stay strong.”

Kudjoe Fianoo confirms resignation of Asante Kotoko Top 4 tournament

Asante Kotoko reportedly wrote to the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) in order to withdraw from the Top 4 tournament before the upcoming season, according to GHALCA President Kudjoe Fianoo.

The Porcupine Warriors, who placed fourth in the 2022–23 Ghana Premier League, were supposed to compete alongside Medeama SC, Aduana Stars, and Bechem United this year, but they decided not to.

According to Kudjoe Fianoo, the club’s decision to withdraw was motivated by its current situation.

“Yes, it is no more a rumour, we received an official letter from Kotoko yesterday which stated that they can’t participate in the tournament and as we are all aware of the current situation of Kotoko, it’s not a deliberate decision to sabotage the tournament but a genuine one and we have accepted their request,” he told Akoma FM.

In order to help the association get ready for a good match, he stated that there were discussions about hiring Dreams FC to replace Asante Kotoko.

“We have immediately reached out to Dreams to replace Kotoko, but they are yet to confirm their participation because of some competition they have lined up. Again we are in talks with Bibiani Gold Stars as a possible replacement in case Dreams fails to honor the invitation.”

The competition is expected to come off at the Baba Yara Stadium from August 6 to August 13.

  • The only institution embarrassing me is Kotoko – Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered king, and owner of Asante Kotoko, has voiced his concern and disappointment with the current state of the club during an important meeting held on Friday at the Manhyia Palace.

The meeting, attended by supporters and former players, aimed to address the club’s situation following the conclusion of the Dr Kwame Kyei-led board’s three-year mandate.

At the gathering, various pressing issues were discussed, and crucial information was revealed, including the club’s staggering debt, which stands at over GH¢3 million.

The Asantehene expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction in which the club is heading, a sentiment that was acknowledged and shared by those present at the meeting.

Kotoko, once hailed as one of the biggest clubs in Africa, now faces challenges in competing on the domestic front, having gone trophyless last season.

Additionally, the club has not won an African title in four decades, a far cry from their dominant performances in the CAF Champions League during the 1970s and 1980s.

The Asantehene’s concerns about Kotoko’s current status highlight the need for a renewed approach and strategic planning to reclaim the club’s former glory.

The meeting at the Manhyia Palace served as a pivotal moment in charting a new course for Kotoko, as supporters and stakeholders acknowledged the need for change and improvement.

GHANAsoccernet.com has reported that Asante Kotoko SC has reappointed former coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum to lead the club in the upcoming season. The appointment was announced by the Manhyia Palace, as per information from Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio.

Dr. Ogum previously guided the club to victory in the Ghana Premier League, securing the title after an eight-year wait. However, he left the club after the 2021-22 season.

Following his departure, the club appointed Burkinabe trainer Seydou Zerbo, who managed the team in various competitions, including the CAF Champions League and the MTN FA Cup. Unfortunately, Zerbo was dismissed midway through the season after a defeat to Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Dr. Ogum’s return to the helm is expected to bring leadership in the club’s recruitment and pre-season preparations as they strive to reclaim the premiership title in the upcoming 2023-24 season.

Arsenal Manager certain Declan Rice, Thomas Partey can play well together

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is confident that the acquisition of Declan Rice from West Ham should not cast doubt on Thomas Partey’s future at the club. According to Arteta, both players possess the necessary qualities required for success at Arsenal.

After engaging in extensive discussions with their London rivals, Arsenal successfully secured the services of the England international, breaking their club-record fee. This signing comes in addition to Jorginho, who joined from Chelsea in the previous January transfer window.

There were speculations about Partey’s potential departure, as he found himself lower in the manager’s choices during the latter part of the previous season. With Rice’s arrival, it was thought that there might be increased competition for the 30-year-old midfielder.

However, Arteta has clarified that the club’s plan is to enhance the team ahead of the upcoming season, considering the numerous matches they will be competing in, including their return to the UEFA Champions League after many years. The focus remains on strengthening the squad and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.

“They can play together. That was in my plans. If you want to improve the squad and have more quality you need players that can improve the squad and players in the same position that can fight for the same places. It’s something that we haven’t had in the last few years. We wanted to improve that. That’s why we bought Declan as well,” he said to the media ahead of their pre-season clash with Manchester United on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Partey has reportedly received a number of offers from Italian and Turkish clubs as well as Saudi clubs who are still spending significantly to elevate the standard of the league.

  • African democracy at risk due to declining satisfaction – CEO of Afrobarometer

African democracy at risk due to declining satisfaction – CEO of Afrobarometer

During the Africa Drive for Democracy Conference – Elders Retreat in Arusha, Tanzania, Afrobarometer CEO Joseph Asunka addressed participants and shared concerning news about the declining satisfaction with democracy across Africa. Asunka emphasized that this decline is eroding citizens’ confidence in democratic governance.

The conference provided a valuable platform for former heads of state and key elders to come together and engage in discussions about the current state of democracy in Africa. Their collective wisdom and imagination were harnessed to explore potential pathways for revitalizing and sustaining democracy on the continent.

Asunka highlighted several factors that might be contributing to the growing dissatisfaction with democratic rule in Africa.

These factors include non-compliance with presidential term limits, an increase in crime and insecurity, and rampant corruption within the political system. Addressing these issues is essential for restoring faith in democratic institutions and ensuring the prosperity of democratic governance in the region.

“The data shows that Africans’ commitment to democracy remains strong,” he said.
“However, governments and elected leaders have failed to meet these popular democratic aspirations. This has led to a decline in popular confidence in democratic governance and an increasing attraction to military rule and intervention.”

According to recent data from Afrobarometer, which surveyed 36 countries in 2021/2022, it was found that a significant majority of Africans, around two-thirds (66%), prefer democracy as their preferred form of government. Furthermore, there is a strong rejection of one-man rule (80%), one-party rule (78%), and military rule (67%) among the surveyed populations.

However, the data also reveals that only 38% of Africans express satisfaction with the functioning of democracy in their respective countries.

Noteworthy attendees at the conference included Joachim Chissano, Ernest Bai Koroma, Hailemariam Desalegn, and Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, who are former heads of state from Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, respectively. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan graced the event as the guest of honour.

During the conference, these esteemed leaders emphasized the importance of finding practical and actionable solutions to strengthen democracy in Africa. Their shared commitment reflects the recognition of the challenges and opportunities ahead in preserving and enhancing democratic governance on the continent.

“Unless and until African governments address the deficiencies in democratic governance and deliver essential public services to their people, democracy will remain an aspiration never to be meaningfully realised,” Hassan said.

Addressing the conference theme, “Securing Africa’s democratic future through learning and engaging,” Koroma said confronting these challenges demands collective action to preserve and strengthen democratic norms and institutions.
“We’re all in this together because we believe in the transformative power of democracy,” he said.

“No doubt democracy is not without obstacles, but together we must confront the
challenges that threaten its foundations: poor leadership, ineffective citizenship, corruption, poverty, political polarisation, rogue elections, and all the attendant ramifications of social
    unrest and political instability.”

Throughout the discussions, participants acknowledged the vital role of African elders in shaping the continent’s democratic future.

Across a continent that has experienced 21 coups in eight years, Afrobarometer data show that the extent of citizens’ opposition to military rule has declined by 10 percentage points over the past decade.

Only three of the 36 surveyed countries (Liberia, Uganda, and Sudan)
have recorded significant increases in their resistance to military rule. Worryingly, a slim majority (53%) of citizens are willing to endorse military intervention if elected leaders abuse their power.

The Africa Drive for Democracy Conference – Elders Retreat served as a platform for constructive dialogue, seeking concrete approaches to advance democracy and ensure sustained democratic gains for Africa.

  • Lisa Franchetti, first woman nominated by Biden to lead US Navy

Lisa Franchetti, first woman nominated by Biden to lead US Navy

For the first time in history, US President Biden has selected a female admiral to lead the US Navy, marking a significant milestone for gender representation in Pentagon military service branches.

The nominee, Lisa Franchetti, brings with her a remarkable background as a former head of the US 6th Fleet and US naval forces in South Korea. She has also served as an aircraft carrier strike commander during her distinguished career.

However, her appointment as Chief of Naval Operations still awaits confirmation from the US Senate, as per the customary procedure.

Presently, the confirmation process faces an obstacle, with one lawmaker blocking the Senate from confirming military leaders in protest against a military abortion policy.

If Adm. Franchetti is confirmed, she will achieve another groundbreaking feat by becoming the first woman to join the prestigious group of senior military officers known as the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

With 38 years of dedicated service, Adm. Franchetti is only the second woman to reach the esteemed rank of four-star admiral.

President Biden lauded her extensive expertise in both operational and policy matters, expressing confidence that she will create history once more when confirmed for the role.

Interestingly, there were reports in the US media suggesting that Adm. Franchetti was not the first choice of US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Instead, he recommended Samuel Paparo, a TOPGUN graduate, for the position of Navy chief. In response, President Biden promoted Adm. Paparo and nominated him to lead the US military forces in the Pacific.

It is worth noting that the US Coast Guard, another significant military branch, is currently led by Admiral Linda Fagan, who is also a woman. However, this branch operates under the Department of Homeland Security, distinct from the Department of Defense.

Assuming her role in the fall, Adm. Franchetti will initially serve in an acting capacity, as confirmation by the divided Senate may take time.

The confirmation process has been hindered by Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is blocking more than 270 military promotions in response to a Pentagon policy covering the travel expenses of service members who require out-of-state abortions.

In his statement, Mr Biden criticised the senator, saying “what Senator Tuberville is doing is not only wrong—it is dangerous”.

He added: “He is risking our ability to ensure that the United States Armed Forces remain the greatest fighting force in the history of the world. And his Republican colleagues in the Senate know it.”

  • If Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen money was paid IMF would have been avoided – NDC MP

If Cecilia Dapaah’s stolen money was paid IMF would have been avoided – NDC MP

Member of parliament from Kumbungu, Hamza Adam, claims that if the government had access to the vast sums of allegedly stolen money, including US$1 million, €300,000, and 350,000 Ghana cedis from the residence of Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the minister for sanitation and water resources, Ghana’s recent recourse to an IMF loan could have been avoided.

He contends that rather than the nation requesting financial aid from the international community, the aforementioned sum is sufficient to support the faltering economy.

“We all know it is illegal to keep such monies because if you look at the quantum of money that is alleged to be found in her residence, if we got such an amount of money, we didn’t need to go to the IMF,” he said.

Speaking in a media briefing after a Parliamentary sitting on July 21, 2023, he stressed the need to investigate all ministers currently serving the country. “That is also a wake-up call, which means we have to go down and investigate all ministers serving the country at the moment.”

He added “I think it is important that the minister, as a matter of urgency, relinquish her position as a minister because her continued stay may interfere with the prosecution processes. We demand that the minister clears the way by doing the ultimate thing, or the president must compel her to resign.”

The blatant thefts took place over a three-month period, from July to October 2022, at the couple’s home in the Accra district of Abelemkpe, according to an official charge sheet from an Accra Circuit Court. Trade Ministry to support business promoters engaged in gold refinery, jewellery

Sector Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond has reassured business promoters engaged in gold refinery and jewelry making under the One District One Factory (1D1F) Initiative that the Ministry of Trade and Industry is fully prepared to support them.

However, Mr. Hammond clarified that the Ministry currently lacks a specific policy document dedicated to the development of the gold jewelry industry within the framework of the Government’s Ten-Point Industrial Transformation Programme.

During a parliamentary session, the Sector Minister addressed a question posed by Dr. Kwabena Donkor, a Member of Parliament (MP) representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) from Pru East. Dr. Donkor inquired about the government’s policies and plans aimed at fostering the growth of the jewelry industry in Ghana, given the country’s significant role as a global leader in gold production.

In response, Mr. Hammond informed the Parliament in Accra that the government, in collaboration with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), is open to investment partnerships with the private sector. The aim is to establish a jewelry processing and market enclave, which will cater to all gold and precious metal articles, encouraging further growth and development in the sector.

“Mr Speaker, in addition, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority as part of its support for handicrafts exports will continue to support the jewellery industry,” Mr Hammond also a New Patriotic Party MP for Adansi-Asokwa, said.

Addressing stakeholders at the opening of the Second Edition of the National Policy Summit in Accra on Monday, August 14, 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo outlined a ten-point agenda to transform the industrial sector of the national economy that would create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth and ensure prosperity for all Ghanaians.

He mentioned that the industrial agenda, which was anchored on the following areas: building competitive businesses of existing local industries by facilitating access to medium and long-term financing at low-interest rates and implementing the 1D1F Initiative designed to bring industrialisation to the doorsteps of the people.

  • Imports of rice, poultry to be reduced by 40% in mid-year budget

Imports of rice, poultry to be reduced by 40% in mid-year budget

In the upcoming 2023 mid-year budget, the finance minister plans to impose a 40% restriction on the importation of rice and chicken.

The details of this restriction are expected to be outlined when the finance minister presents the budget to parliament on July 25, 2023. Alongside this measure, the budget is likely to introduce various new taxes and levies.

However, several trade unions have voiced their concerns, urging the government not to introduce additional taxes, as citizens are already burdened by existing ones.

During the presentation of the 2023 budget statement and economic policy to parliament on November 24, 2022, the Minister of Finance had previously announced the government’s intention to support the private sector in targeting specific products for import substitution.

The goal is to replace up to approximately 45% of the country’s annual imports, as this would alleviate pressure on the cedi, the national currency.

“Mr. Speaker, as I have already indicated, Ghana’s heavy dependence on imports places tremendous pressure on the Cedi, creating an unfavourable balance of payments position. On average, Ghana’s import bill exceeds US$10 billion annually and is accounted for by a diverse range of items that include iron, steel, aluminium, sugar, rice, fish, poultry, palm oil, cement, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, Toilet roll, toothpick, fruit juices, etc.,” he said.

Ofori-Atta said the government through partnerships with the private sector will ensure the establishment of various manufacturing plants to produce such products locally.

“We currently have the capacity as a country to locally produce items that account for about 45 percent of the value of our annual imports. These include rice, fish, sugar, poultry, cement, pharmaceuticals, jute bags, computers, etc. To this end, Government will target these products for import substitution by supporting the private sector, through partnerships with existing and prospective businesses to expand, rehabilitate and establish manufacturing plants targeted at producing these selected items,” the minister said.

2,000 workers needed to replace retirees – Dr Adams government

The Department of Parks and Gardens’ Chief Horticultural Officer, Dr. Daniel Kingsford Adams, has stated that his organization needs roughly 2,000 new employees to become lively once more.

He explained the human resources dilemma as being caused by the staff’s impending retirement of 90% of the workforce over the next five years.

However, he pointed out that despite the department receiving ten new hires, the personnel size is still insufficient.

Among other challenges of the Department of Parks and Gardens, Dr Adams further stated that, “Since I took over last year, the ministry, through the effort of the sector minister, Dan Botwe, provided us with new vehicles, including two big trucks, a Landcruiser Prado, a tractor, two pickups and working machines. Other than that, the department had no vehicles.”

“We have also been provided with about 10 workers but we need a staff strength of about 2,000 to make the department vibrant once again,” he said.

The 1992 Constitution and Section 12 of PNDCL 327, which specifies the duties, are where the department derives its authority, according to a story in the Daily Graphic.

The department’s responsibility is to maintain the horticultural vegetation that lines the median and shoulders of all national roadways.

  • Nigerian with Ghanaian refugee passport recounts challenges with entry into Zimbabwe

Nigerian with Ghanaian refugee passport recounts challenges with entry into Zimbabwe

A Nigerian investigative journalist and filmmaker recently recounted his distressing encounter with Zimbabwean authorities when he attempted to enter the country using a Ghanaian refugee passport. His ordeal sparked an online diplomatic discussion on Twitter after he was denied entry.

David Hundeyin took to Twitter on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 7:32 PM to express his frustration, sharing how he was detained for a staggering 7 hours upon his arrival at Harare Airport, despite presenting a refugee passport from Ghana.

In a series of tweets, the journalist described being confined to a malodorous locked room for nearly 7 hours and only being permitted to use the washroom after 10 hours of detention.

Hundeyin further clarified that although he traveled with a Ghanaian refugee passport, the authorities insisted he could not enter the country without a visa, leading to the unfortunate situation. The incident sparked conversations on Twitter about the challenges faced by journalists and travelers in similar situations.

“They said that despite using the travel document of a country with a visa-free relationship, my nationality is still Nigerian, and thus, I need a visa,” he tweeted.

David Hundeyin provided a comprehensive account of the events leading to his detention and the reasons behind it. This came after Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary in the Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Service, Nick Manwana, shared some details about the incident in a tweet.

According to David’s explanation, he had no prior knowledge of the visa requirement for traveling to Zimbabwe, as he possessed a refugee passport from Ghana. The refugee passport should have granted him visa-free entry into the country.

He further expressed that in the past two years, he had utilized the same Ghanaian refugee passport to visit numerous countries worldwide without encountering any issues. It was only in Zimbabwe that he faced refusal of entry with this particular passport.

The incident sparked discussions online, raising awareness about visa policies and the challenges faced by travelers, particularly those with refugee passports, when trying to enter certain countries.

“I wasn’t aware that it is standard operating procedure in Zimbabwe for the country’s minister of information to tweet the asylum status of a foreigner, but since you’ve resorted to telling half truths, perhaps you should mention to your audience that I came into Zimbabwe with this valid Ghanaian refugee passport, which I have used to travel extensively over the world for 2 years.

“I’m sure you saw the valid UK Visa inside it. I’m also sure that you saw the numerous entry and exit stamps inside it belonging to multiple jurisdictions inside and outside Africa. Only in Zimbabwe have I EVER had an issue travelling with this document.

“You might also want to share with your audience that I put a call through to the Zimbabwean embassy in Accra before I travelled, to confirm that I did not need a visa, and that J was expressly advised that as long as the airline was happy to recognise the travel document, I would have no problem coming into Zimbabwe visa-free,” he tweeted.

Being the journalist he is, a number of people, after seeing the series of tweets by David Hundeyin, prompted authorities in Zimbabwe, from which Nick Mangwana, the Permanent Secretary in the Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Service responded to one of them.

In the tweet, Nick wrote that although the journalist had documents showing he was from Ghana as a refugee, he was Nigerian and as such, he needed a visa to enter their country.

“David came with Ghanaian Refuge papers claiming he was a Nigerian who was a refugee from his home country. His country of Asylum is Ghana after claiming to be running away from persecution in Nigeria.

“People in this category certainly need Visas to enter Zimbabwe. He wasn’t coming in to work as a journalist. He said he was just coming to visit but without getting a Visa in Ghana first. Other parts of his story were also unsatisfactory to the immigration authorities. He was considered not a candidate for entry into Zimbabwe,” he said in the first of his reactions to a Twitter user’s message.

The Zimbabwean authority further explained in other replies that David Hundeyin was also not fully honest with officials.

While refraining from confirming whether or not they detained the journalist for hours, Nick Mangwana said, in response to a question in that respect, that “That’s his side of the story.”

The journalist tweeted again that he eventually got released and safely returned home, although it is unclear whether that is in Ghana or in Nigeria.

Blast in Johannesburg kills 1, injures 48 others

Authorities have said that an explosion has occurred in the heart of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of one person and injuring 48 others. Panyaza Lesufi, the premier of Gauteng province, which encompasses Johannesburg, addressed the media on Thursday, revealing that 12 of the injured individuals remain hospitalized.

Emergency services are currently at the scene, assessing the extent of the damage and evacuating people as needed.

Due to the incident’s gravity, several streets in this typically bustling area of South Africa’s commercial hub have been closed to traffic.

While the cause of the massive explosion is yet to be definitively determined, Gauteng officials suspect that it might have been triggered by a rupture of underground gas pipes.

Witnesses reported feeling the ground shake and hearing a loud bang just before a section of Breet street collapsed, causing overturned cars and minibus taxis. Video footage illustrates the significant impact, showing a wide split in the road resulting from the incident.

  • Citizens of Burkina Faso to soon face hunger strike

Citizens of Burkina Faso to soon face hunger strike

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has issued a warning about the escalating hunger crisis in Burkina Faso, attributing it to the ongoing security challenges in certain regions of the country.

Presently, approximately 2.2 million people, which accounts for one in ten of the population, are already facing hunger. However, the situation is expected to worsen, with the IRC predicting that this number could rise to 3.3 million by September.

The surge in militant Islamist insurgency has severely impacted parts of Burkina Faso, leading to significant disruptions in food supplies and the closure of healthcare facilities.

The resulting isolation has left communities almost entirely cut off from assistance. Particularly affected is the northern town of Djibo, which is currently hosting over 200,000 people who have been displaced from their homes in other regions.

The once-thriving food market in Djibo is now nearly empty, and an alarming 80% of local health clinics have been forced to shut down, as per the IRC’s report.

Tragically, last year, a supply convoy en route to Djibo, escorted by the army, was ambushed, resulting in the loss of 11 soldiers’ lives.

The IRC is calling for greater international attention to address the dire situation faced by the people in Burkina Faso.

The country is currently under the governance of a military junta led by President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who assumed power in October with a promise to reclaim territory from the militants. However, the security challenges persist, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the nation.

Protection or terror, division within police in Kenya

In spite of a top rights organization calling their response to recent opposition protests “an act of terrorism,” Kenyan President William Ruto hailed the police for maintaining order.

Several people have died throughout the four months of protests, including 10 who were shot dead by police last week. Six individuals were reportedly killed on Wednesday after battles with the police, according to local media.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), which is an NGO, said there was “a troubling pattern to show that [the] police’s actions and use of lethal force were premeditated”.

But Mr Ruto characterised the response as the police protecting people and property.

“I congratulate the police for standing firm, for ensuring peace prevails and ensuring that all criminals are dealt with,” Mr Ruto said.

The official death toll has not been released, but according to Amnesty International, at least 30 people have been killed by the police since the start of the anti-government protests in March.

A member of a civil society network that monitors the police’s response to protesters in Kisumu and Migori, two western counties, reported that security forces appear to be under a “shoot-to-kill order.”

This anonymous activist revealed having photographic evidence showing individuals shot in the back with live ammunition.

“Last week on Wednesday, one police officer refused to follow the order to shoot at protesters and was beaten up by his colleagues and was hospitalised,” the person added.

The opposition has called a series of rallies against the introduction of new taxes and the rising cost of living. Currently the country is experiencing the second day of a three-day protest.

Local and international groups and foreign diplomats have expressed deep concerns over the situation in Kenya and are urging both sides to seek a negotiated solution.

  • Joseph Cudjoe leads govt’s anti-corruption campaign as 95 out of 128 public enterprises get audited

Joseph Cudjoe leads govt’s anti-corruption campaign as 95 out of 128 public enterprises get audited

A significant step has been taken in the fight against corruption as at least 95 out of 128 public enterprises in the country have undergone rigorous auditing.

These audited accounts have been thoroughly vetted and verified by relevant institutions and the central government, making them ready for public scrutiny.

The Minister of Public Enterprises, Joseph Cudjoe, who is also an MP for Effia Constituency in the Western Region, shared this update during a media engagement in Accra on Wednesday.

He emphasized that this progress is a result of the government’s commitment to intensify the battle against corruption. Regularly preparing audited accounts for the central government has become a standard practice for all public enterprises, which could contribute to the government’s efforts in tackling corruption in the country.

“I have personally visited 44 public enterprises and interacted with their MDs. We have collectively found solutions to their challenges which is often revenue generation”, he said.

The Minister, who has set an eagle eye on all public enterprises, with the fist of his technical finance background, has issued unconditional directives to all these enterprises for them to comply or face the wrath of the government.

“It is the plan of government to get a whole of government consolidated account, where it will make it easier to check corruption by tracking revenue and expenditure”

He emphasized that the main purpose behind all these actions is to crack down on wastefulness in the public sector and address corruption effectively within the public domain.

During the customary Minister’s Press Briefing in Accra, Mr. Joseph Cudjoe unveiled the Anti-Corruption initiatives. He revealed that back in 2016, only two companies (Public Enterprises) had submitted their audited accounts through the government’s efforts to combat corruption.

“The mindset of the Ghanaian is different when managing their own business compared to managing a state asset”
The reason, he said his outfit issued the directive to all public enterprises to prepare these audited accounts to aid in transparency and accountability.

As a result of the directive issued and the improved compliance rate being recorded, the situation has seen a remarkable improvement. This development is seen as positive news because having the audited accounts of these enterprises would grant the government unrestricted access to assess their performance and curb corruption within the public sector.

Joseph Cudjoe, the firebrand politician expected to run unopposed in the NPP parliamentary primaries for Effia Constituency, has gained recognition for his significant contributions to President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s administration.

In his capacity as the person in charge, Cudjoe has committed to ensuring the profitability of public enterprises through proactive and productive policy initiatives. His reputation for being quick-witted and dedicated to serving the nation has been well-established through his various roles as both a legislator and a Minister of State within the government.

Second DDEP needed to reduce debt burden – Finance Ministry

The recently introduced Debt Exchange Program for bills relating to cocoa as well as the restructuring of the domestic bonds denominated in dollars are intended to secure debt levels, according to Deputy Minister of Finance Abena Osei-Asare.

She stated that despite being difficult, these actions are now necessary to protect the nation’s debt levels in order to comply with the requirements set forth in the Ghana program agreed with IMF help.

“We have taken this painful and difficult pathway because we know the alternative is simply unthinkable,” Osei-Asare said in her remarks at the 2023 Deloitte Economic Dialogue: Pre-Mid-Year Budget Discussion.

Through the Ministry of Finance, the government extended an invitation to qualifying domestic dollar bondholders totaling about US$809 million on July 14, 2023, to swap existing bonds and notes for new ones.

The invitation, which is a follow-up to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) launched in December 2022, aims to help the government manage its public debt and reduce it to levels that are manageable.

The Ghana COCOBOD also invited owners of its short-term debt securities (cocoa bills) to trade about GH7.93 billion for longer-term debt securities on the same day.

The UK government has imposed sanctions on 13 individuals and businesses associated with Wagner Group’s activities in Mali, Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

Wagner mercenaries have been involved in providing security services in various African nations.

One of the individuals sanctioned is Konstantin Aleksandrovitch Pikalov, often referred to as the “right-hand man” of Wagner’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin. Pikalov faces accusations of human rights abuses.

Furthermore, Wagner fighters have been accused by the US of engaging in illicit gold deals on the African continent to enrich themselves.

In the past, Wagner fighters played a significant role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine until a recent attempted mutiny last month.

“The Wagner Group is committing atrocities in Ukraine, as well as acting with impunity in countries like Mali, Central African Republic and Sudan,” UK Development Minster Andrew Mitchell said.

One person confirmed dead in South Africa’s ‘earthquake-like’ gas explosion

On July 19, 2023, Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, experienced a massive gas explosion that wreaked havoc similar to that of an earthquake. Streets were torn apart, structures were destroyed, and vehicles were thrown into the air by the force of the blast.

According to a BBC report, one person lost their life, and 48 others sustained injuries in the incident that occurred on Wednesday night.

Authorities in the Gauteng province are still investigating the cause of the explosion, but initial suspicions point to a possible rupture of underground gas pipes.

Panyaza Lesufi, the premier of Gauteng province, stated on Thursday that 12 of the injured individuals are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital. Several streets in Johannesburg have been closed to traffic, and emergency services remain on-site to assess the damage and evacuate people as needed.

Witnesses reported feeling the ground shake and hearing loud bangs just before a section of Breet Street collapsed, creating a vertical split in the road.

The aftermath of the explosion revealed around 20 vehicles lying on the sides of the street, severely damaged by the force of the blast.

Nigerians, smartest in the world despite bad nuts – Akon

During a recent appearance on the Drink Champs podcast hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Senegalese-American singer Akon praised Nigerians, calling them arguably the “smartest people” in the world.

He mentioned that Nigeria has been producing a significant number of billionaires, surpassing any other country globally.

However, Akon also acknowledged that there are a few “bad apples” who have contributed to tarnishing the country’s image. He emphasized that despite the presence of these individuals, Nigerians’ intelligence is undeniable, and they possess an exceptional level of intelligence.

suggested that some of these “bad apples” may have misdirected their intelligence, leading to negative outcomes.

“If they were to gear that towards something more positive or productive… Because the ones that did, there’s more billionaires being made in Nigeria than anywhere in the world.”

We don’t even have capacity for rail line how much more sky train? – Expert quizzes

A Transport Expert, Rev Dr. Charles Adam, has expressed his concern over Ghana’s inadequate capacity to construct and maintain transport systems.

He pointed out that the country lacks the necessary infrastructure to build and effectively manage sky trains, citing previous failures in managing railway systems as a fundamental issue.

Recently, discussions surrounding Ghana’s sky train gained prominence when the Minority in parliament initiated investigations into the US$2 million Sky train project.

“What we need is a workable transport master plan for the urban area of Accra. We tried to do that when we wanted to do the Bus Rapid System (BRS) but everything we planned we couldn’t do it. So, we probably have to go back to the drawing table and find out, why we couldn’t do it,” he was quoted by 3news.com.

According to Rev Adam, Ghana has refused to learn the right approach to enhancing these new technologies in order to successfully launch them.

He added that until the country is able to work on its railway system, a higher infrastructure will be difficult to implement.

“Why is it that Nigeria built its bus rapid system, and now it is building a rail network? It is because it has learned how to do it right. We haven’t even learned to build the first one and we are thinking of jumping to a higher infrastructure or a higher system that probably may be a little more complicated. We don’t have any public transport authority, even the institutional capacity does not exist, and the capacity to maintain a rail network today doesn’t exist, what we know about rail networks is based on old technology.

“We have built a lot of rail lines but we don’t have trains running. So if you ask me whether we have the capacity to even maintain rail service, I doubt it and that is the kind of problem that Ethiopia is also facing, they built nice beautiful systems because it was promised and was delivered but they don’t have the capacity to maintain it,” he said.

Kenyan press calls for a truce amid civil war

Leading Kenyan publications have urged the country’s president, William Ruto, and the head of the opposition, Raila Odinga, “to consider if they want any more blood on their individual hands” as protests against recent tax rises enter their second day in the nation.

Six people were reportedly murdered on Wednesday after clashes between Kenyan police and protesters, according to local media.

In a joint editorial today, The Standard, Daily Nation, The Star and People Daily said Kenya “stands on the precipice”.

“Unless reason prevails, we could all very well tumble down into a dark and dangerous abyss from which it could be almost impossible to extricate ourselves,” the editorial said.

It added that Mr Ruto and Mr Odinga have the “greatest responsibility to put out the fire before it spreads out of control”.

The newspapers issued a warning stating that Kenya was susceptible to experiencing civil wars similar to those witnessed in neighboring countries in the past. They cautioned that the nation could potentially descend into “full-scale genocide.”

In light of ongoing protests, the press emphasized the importance of responsible demonstrations and urged the police to refrain from using excessive force against protesters.

Furthermore, some Kenyans on social media called upon the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take notice of alleged human rights violations committed by security forces during the protests.

In response to recent events, the Media Council of Kenya condemned cases where police officers disguised themselves as journalists to arrest protesters. The media watchdog expressed concern that such incidents put journalists at risk while carrying out their duties.

  • Ghana intends to double its equity market value, increasing from GHS65b to GHS130b

Managing director of the Ghana Stock Exchange, Abena Amoah, has stated that Ghana intends to quadruple its stock market from its current position of GH65 billion to GH130 billion.

She contends that the stock market is essential to the economy and that efforts must be made to boost Ghana’s market’s competitiveness in order to draw investors to the capital market.

The GSE MD joined demands for the integration of the capital market in the African sub-region while speaking to attendees at a sensitization workshop for phase two of the West African Capital Market Integration.

“The Ghana market is one of the significant markets in Africa. Our equity market has a capitalization of about GH¢65 billion and we are looking to double that, move from the 40 listed companies that we have to about 100 and by joining other markets in Africa we can leverage by learning from each other,” Amoah is quoted by citibusinessnews.com.

She additionally asked those involved in the financial sector to coordinate their efforts with those of other African markets in order to strengthen the region’s equities markets.

Selling SOEs is to attract private investment and generate jobs – Joseph Cudjoe

Joseph Cudjoe, the minister of public enterprises, has listed a few of the state-owned companies whose assets the government is selling. The government plans to sell the assets of approximately 17 shut-down SOEs, the minister announced last week.

However, he clarified that the action is intended to secure private investments for the enterprises and have a cascading effect on the communities in which they are located.

The Minister said in an interview as quoted by citinewsroom.com that the move is “…to make sure we secure our private investments into it through government decision to sell them off into private hand so that they will be invested into to develop them to bring jobs to that area.”

    Ten of the SOEs are:

Ghana National Trading Corporation State Construction Corporation

    State Fishing Corporation,

UAC Aboso Glass Factory Bungalow of the Bolgatanga Meat Factory

    Bonsa Tyre Factory’s Clinic

Research laboratory of the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds

The regional office of the Ghana Food Production Corporation at Srodae

The decision to sell off the assets of these SOEs according to the Minister is a means for the government to save costs.

According to a Government-commissioned study completed in 2019, the total market value of the State’s equity holding in 63 active Specified Entities was estimated to be GHS 35.7 billion as of December 2016, as disclosed by the Minister.

Out of this amount, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) constituted 92 percent of the total value, while the remaining eight percent represented the State’s equity in Joint Venture Companies (JVCs).

To enhance the management and performance of the SOEs, the government expressed its intentions to restructure some of them. The proposed restructuring methods included listing them on the Ghana Stock Exchange, liquidation, strategic investment, and outright disposal.

In a bid to ensure better efficiency and effectiveness in managing the SOEs, the Minister further revealed that in 2021, the government introduced a Public Enterprises League Table (PELT). This tool was designed to assess the performance of the Specified Entities and foster healthy competition among them, thereby driving improved performance.

  • GN Bank: Nduom wins Supreme Court case against Appeals Court

GN Bank: Nduom wins Supreme Court case against Appeals Court

The Supreme Court has overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision that prevented the High Court from investigating the circumstances surrounding the revocation of GN Bank’s operation license by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

In a unanimous ruling by the five-member panel of the Apex Court, presided over by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, it was determined that the Court of Appeal had erred in its judgment.

Back in June 2022, the Court of Appeal had ruled that the matter of GN Bank’s license revocation could only be addressed through arbitration, despite the High Court asserting its jurisdiction to investigate the issue.

Challenging this decision, Dr. Nduom and his legal team, led by Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, appealed to the Supreme Court.

On July 19, 2023, the panel, comprising Justice Pwamang, Justice Mariama Owusu, Justice Omoro Amadu Tanko, Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu, and Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu, ruled that the applicants had alternative ways to address their grievances, including going through the Court.

The Supreme Court concluded that the Bank of Ghana had prematurely argued that the matter could only be resolved through arbitration, as the High Court had the authority to investigate the case.

“It was our view that the High Court was right to dismiss the rights of jurisdiction and to investigate the complaint,” filed by Dr. Nduom and his companies.

The apex Court said, Court of appeal erred in its ruling on June 7 2022 and the “ruling of Court of Appeal is hereby set aside.”

The decision of the Court of Appeal from June 7, 2022 that the termination of GN Bank’s license by the BoG may only be resolved through arbitration was contested by Dr. Nduom, a businessman who also doubles as the founder of the Progressive People’s Party.

    Background

The Bank of Ghana requested on June 2, 2017, that the case brought by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Coconut Groove Beach Resort Conference Centre Limited, and Groupe Nduom challenging the Bank of Ghana’s decision to revoke the license of GN Bank be referred to arbitration. A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal unanimously upheld this request.

The Court determined that arbitration, not the court, is the proper forum for such a dispute under section 141 of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016, Act 930.

The Court further declared that Dr. Nduom and the other applicants had misrepresented their appeal of the Bank of Ghana’s ruling as a human rights claim.

As a result, the court suspended the High Court’s proceedings and submitted the case to the Ghana Arbitration Center.

However, Dr. Nduom and his attorneys, under the direction of Dr. Justice Srem Sai, filed an application at the Supreme Court to overturn the Court of Appeal’s ruling because they were unhappy with it.

Justice Henry Kwoffie was one of three judges on the Court of Appeal bench, along with Justice Eric Baah and Justice Novisi Ayine.

Why Black Sherif was arrested at KIA

On the evening of July 19, 2023, musician Black Sherif was taken into custody at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

He was transferred from the airport to the police headquarters in Accra, according to a Kofi TV report, because of a contract violation regarding a July 4 show that he failed to honor in Greece.

Kofi Adomah, host of the Kofi TV channel on YouTube, further disclosed that the reason the musician was detained at the airport was because he had been added to the stop list following a client complaint that led to his inclusion on the list.

“We called our sources and it appears it is due to a contractual issue he has to play on a cruise ship in Greece having charged US$40,000 and receiving half of the amount.

After the performance, he was supposed to get the remaining amount, Kofi said.

Blacko ignored the July 4 show date and did not perform.

  • World Bank estimates 850,000 Ghanaians fell into poverty in 2022

World Bank estimates 850,000 Ghanaians fell into poverty in 2022

In a latest Ghana Economic Update report titled “Price Surge: Unraveling Inflation’s Toll on Poverty and Food Security,” launched in Accra on Wednesday, the World Bank has expressed concern about the impact of rising prices of goods and services on the well-being of Ghanaians. The report indicates that approximately 850,000 Ghanaians were driven into poverty in 2022 due to these inflationary pressures.

The Bank highlights that the escalating inflation has not only eroded living standards but also exacerbated poverty and food insecurity among households in Ghana. To address this pressing issue, the World Bank recommends that policymakers take decisive action to restore economic stability. They also suggest measures to alleviate the challenges faced by farmers, such as the high cost of fertilizers, and to expand social intervention programs that offer support to vulnerable populations.

Additionally, the Bretton Wood Institution emphasizes the importance of focusing on long-term solutions, particularly investments in agriculture research and technology transfers. These targeted investments aim to boost domestic production, reduce production costs, and enhance the quality and safety of food in the country.

Mr. Paul Corral, a Senior Economist with the World Bank, elaborated on the bank’s approach, stating that they utilized monetary indicators to measure annual household income and expenditure. The findings revealed that inflation has significantly contributed to the rise in poverty levels in Ghana, affecting a substantial number of people.

Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts from policymakers and stakeholders to protect the welfare of the Ghanaian population and foster economic stability in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the report, Mr Kwabena Gyan Kwakye, a World Bank Economist, explained that the 2022 macroeconomic shocks, particularly inflation, had more adverse impact on the poor.

He said the next two years (by 2025), where the country was expected to recover from the current economic crisis, would “be very tricky for Ghana’s poverty reduction efforts”.

“Without bringing the economy back on track, no meaningful poverty reduction can happen. Concurrently, safety nets to protect the most vulnerable need to be enhanced to ensure sustainable poverty reduction and shared prosperity,” he said.

“Expanding and increasing transfers of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) could ensure the poorest are able to cope and build resilience to future shocks,” the World Bank Economist and co-author of the report said.

The World Bank’s Senior Agricultural Economist, Mr. Ashwini Sebastian, asked for assistance for farmers so they can respond to market possibilities and adjust to global demand.

She said that should be a long-term focus by policymakers to mitigate the impact of inflation on food security.

“This is particularly relevant since many of the poor are farming households. Policies should, therefore, be evidence based and aimed at alleviating the different constraints farmers face,” he added.

In the 2017 Ghana Living Standards Survey by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), 45.6 per cent of Ghana’s population was multidimensionally poor, with 23.4 per cent others being consumption expenditure poor.

In essence, they were deprived of electricity, water, housing, sanitation, including access to toilet facilities, school attendance and attainment, nutrition and health insurance.

Mr John Foster Agyaho, a Principal Statistician, GSS, explained during a panel discussion that about a third of the items in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket for measuring inflation was food.

He, said it was important for the Government to prioritse connecting road networks to farmers by addressing the transportation and storage bottlenecks, and implement proactive measures to attract more youth into agriculture.

Ghana’s inflation stood at 54.1 per cent in December 2022, which was characterised by a surge in food costs, a report by GSS showed.

It was during that period that a Ghana News Agency report revealed that workers, formal and informal, had resorted to walking long-distances, riding bicycles, and engaging in carpooling to manage the economic hardship.

Meanwhile, the World Bank report signalled that Ghana’s economy would recover to its potential growth by 2025.

This depends on the government putting structural changes into place to address the underlying causes of the economic crisis, accelerate economic growth, and increase economic resilience through the nation’s US$3 billion 17th financial bailout program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

“Growth will begin to recover to its potential by 2025 as drag from fiscal consolidation fades and macroeconomic stabilisation and structural reforms start bearing fruit,” Mr Pierre Frank Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, said.

Increasing use of cyberspace to facilitate human trafficking worrying – Davis Ansah Opoku

Member of Parliament representing Mpraeso Constituency, Davis Ansah Opoku, has voiced his deep concern regarding the escalating incidence of human trafficking cases not only in Ghana but also across Africa.

Raising an urgent alarm about this alarming trend, the lawmaker emphasizes that it demands serious attention from African leaders. He points out that human traffickers have adapted to modern methods, such as exploiting social media platforms, to perpetrate their heinous crimes. Through these means, they ensnare unsuspecting individuals into the trafficking network, subjecting them to exploitation and profiteering.

In his address to Parliament on Wednesday, July 19, Mr. Ansah Opoku shed light on the disheartening reality of the situation.

“Mr Speaker, it is heartbreaking to note that whilst the Government of Ghana is striving relentlessly to tackle the known patterns of human trafficking, traffickers are taking advantage of technological advancements and new media to forge new ways to facilitate human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking.

“This has transformed the global human trafficking business into one UNICEF conservatively estimates turn an annual profit of about USD 32 billion; other estimates peg this figure as over USD150 billion.

“Mr Speaker, human trafficking, specifically sex trafficking, happens on this scale because an entire infrastructure supports and facilitates it. Young, vulnerable, and impressionable girls are recruited through social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram, with traffickers masquerading as love interests.

“Others are lured by the extravagant lifestyles of social media influencers who traffickers sponsor. According to a 2018 report by the All-Parliamentary Group on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade of the British Parliament, other women are lured online with promises of employment in other countries only to be coerced into brothels when they arrive,” excerpts of his statement read.

Mr. Ansah Opoku described the infrastructure that supports and facilitates human trafficking as extensive. He added that deceptive offers of overseas employment lead many women to end up in brothels against their will, as reported by the All-Parliamentary Group on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade of the British Parliament in 2018.

In light of these distressing developments, the MP has urged African leaders and authorities to take urgent action to combat the rising use of cyberspace to facilitate human trafficking and protect the vulnerable individuals targeted by these criminal networks.

On the evening of July 19, 2023, renowned musician Black Sherif encountered an interruption at Kotoka International Airport (KIA). Upon his arrival in the country, he was detained due to his name being placed on a ‘STOP LIST.’

According to a report from Kofi TV, the action was taken in connection to a contract that Black Sherif had allegedly failed to fulfill, leading to a formal complaint against him. Kofi Adomah, the host of Kofi TV channel on YouTube, disclosed this information.

As news of the supposed ‘arrest’ spread on social media, speculations surged, as no visual evidence was available. However, blogger Nkonkonsa has since shared what seems to be the first images of Black Sherif being escorted out of the airport. The video, posted on Twitter, depicts the artist being led into a vehicle by two individuals, one in police uniform and the other in civilian attire.

The Kofi TV report further revealed that after leaving the airport, Black Sherif was taken to the police headquarters in Accra for further processing.

The contractual dispute that led to this situation revolves around a scheduled show on July 4, which the musician allegedly failed to fulfill in Greece. It is reported that he was supposed to perform on a cruise ship and had charged US$40,000 for the engagement, receiving half of the payment in advance.

Cross-examination: First state witness face of Tsatsu Tsikata in the witness box

The lead lawyer representing James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, skillfully questioned the first state witness during the ongoing criminal trial at an Accra High Court. Tsatsu Tsikata and his legal team finally had the opportunity for cross-examination after several unsuccessful attempts to secure a daily hearing for Quayson’s trial.

During the cross-examination, Tsikata delved into the witness, Richard Takyi-Mensah’s statement recording process and the events leading to Quayson’s clearance by the Electoral Commission to participate in the 2020 elections. A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team shared excerpts of the exchanges, revealing that Tsikata managed to extract two crucial pieces of information from the witness.

Firstly, the witness confirmed that the Electoral Commission had indeed given the green light to Quayson to run for office. Secondly, it was revealed that despite Takyi-Mensah claiming that his statement was recorded in English, it was actually conducted in Twi.

These revelations shed light on the case and highlight the importance of the ongoing trial concerning James Gyakye Quayson.

Further Cross Examination by Tsatsu TSIKATA of PW1 on 18/7/2023

Tsatsu TSIKATA: Were you aware of a complaint lodged with the EC against the candidacy of the accused person for the election in December, 2020.
PW1, Richard Takyi Mensah: Answer: I did read about it.

Q: Are you aware that following that complaint, the EC went into the matter of the complaint?
A: As I did say, I did read about it.

Q: Are you aware that the complaint was that he was not qualified to stand for those elections, are you not?
A: Per what I read, I read that a group sent a complete to the EC.

Q: And you are aware that the complaint was based on his owing allegiance to a country other than Ghana, are you not?
A:Yes my lady per what I read, that was what the complaint was about.

Q: Are you aware that the EC cleared the Accused person to stand for those elections, are you not?
A: Per what I read, the EC invited the complainant and the accused to a meeting and based on what the accused told the EC, then based on that the EC cleared him.

Q: The EC cleared the accused person, is that correct, are you aware of that?
A: Yes my lady. I have already said that per what I read, the EC did clear him based on what the accused put before the EC.

Q: So you realize that the accused participated in that election on the basis of being cleared by the EC.
A: Yes my lady based on what the accused told the EC.

Q: You cannot say on what basis the accused was cleared by the EC, can you?
A: I am basing on what I read.

Q: And you are claiming that you read that he was cleared on the basis of what he told the EC, is that what you are saying to this court?
    A: Yes my lady.

Q: My question was, you are aware that the EC asked the complainant to provide evidence?
A: No my lady that did not come to my attention.

Q: Just have a look at this document and see whether that is your signature at the back?
A: Yes, it is my signature.

Q:If anybody claims that you spoke in Twi in making that statement to the Police, they would not be telling the truth, would they?
A: I have already said that I did write in the English language.

Q: Just read to the hearing of the court the first sentence of Exhibit 1?
A: PW 1 reads the first sentence of exhibit 1 in open court.

Q: So you have seen the statement, the complainant STATES in Twi Language.
A: Yes that is what is stated in Exhibit 1.

  • How a sense of betrayal is fueling Kenya’s protest

How a sense of betrayal is fueling Kenya’s protest

At least 24 people have been shot dead in recent months as Kenyan police have clashed with demonstrators during the most recent opposition demonstrations against the growing cost of living and tax increases.

James Wainaina, a taxi driver in Nairobi’s capital city, supported William Ruto in the previous election because he ran as the representative of the country’s “hustler nation”—common people struggling to make ends meet.

However, Mr. Wainaina is now backing the protests because he feels misled.

Prices have increased since President Ruto took office despite his government raising taxes.

Mr Ruto says the extra revenue is needed for escalating debt repayments and to fund projects to create jobs, but the tax rises have made life even harder for the poorest Kenyans.

Mr Wainaina’s daughter, a high school student, recently stayed at home for three weeks because he was unable to pay her 14,000-shilling ($100; £75) school fees.

Mr Wainaina says his business has declined because of the cost-of-living crisis.

He gets fewer clients and nearly all his earnings now go into simply keeping his car on the road.

Five years ago, he could make up to 4,000 shillings a day, enough to cover his basic necessities, including school fees, he says.

He laments there are times he now goes home with just 500 shillings after expenses “which is not enough to fuel the car the next day”.

“It is very difficult for us,” he says. The government, he adds, has not made it easy for small businesses, especially the “hustlers” .

Mr Wainaina says they were lied to.

“It doesn’t seem like things will be better, you see [the president] lied to us, we are being oppressed, things are becoming difficult. When the cost of fuel goes up, the price of everything else goes up, even electricity. Things are becoming worse.”

Even those who still support the government are expressing “a considerable level of unhappiness with the current state of affairs”, according to the latest survey by a local polling firm, Tifa.

Its survey shows that 56% of Kenyans think the country is heading in the wrong direction, up from 48% in March.

The polling firm suggests the discontent may be feeding into support for the protests called by the Azimio opposition coalition, led by Raila Odinga, who was defeated by Mr Ruto last year.

Government data show that the prices of some key food products have risen considerably in the 12 months to June – with the staples – maize, grain and flour – increasing by up to 30%, rice and potatoes by nearly 20% and sugar costing nearly 60% more.

Despite that, in the finance bill which became law on 1 July, the government doubled the value-added tax on fuel products from 8% to 16%, and introduced a 1.5% housing levy on employees’ basic pay, with an equivalent amount paid by the employer.

The levy is supposed to go to a fund to construct homes for the less well-off while creating jobs.

Besides that, taxes on sales (Turnover Tax) were tripled to 3% for small businesses, and income tax for high-earning employees was raised from 30% to a maximum of 35%.

The government defends the new taxes – now temporarily suspended by a court – as necessary because of the country’s high debts.

It accuses the previous administration of massively adding to the country’s debt burden by spending huge amounts of money on infrastructure projects that did not help the ordinary Kenyan.

Mr Ruto served in the previous government as deputy president, but he distanced himself from it after falling out with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He and government officials have told Kenyans that paying the taxes is a short-term “sacrifice” for the future of the country.

But Mr Wainaina is not convinced. Likewise, Edwin Simiyu, a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) rider in Kiambu town near the capital regrets voting for the current administration.

“[The president] said we should give him one year and then we’d see positive changes. Now when he is in, he changes the tune and says we should wait for years before things become better. We are suffering, we have been totally betrayed, we’ve been forgotten,” he says.

Charles Kaindo is hard at work in the same town selling second-hand clothes on a pavement.

The hawker tells the BBC it is unfortunate the government has broken its promises.

He says there will be a time when people will say “enough is enough” – explaining that hard-working people will turn to crime and others “may even take their lives when the suffering becomes too much”.

But not everyone thinks that higher taxes are a bad thing.

Jane Njeri, an accountant in the private sector, says she does not envy the government – which needs the money to pay off the huge debts that Kenya owes.

The Kenya shilling has been steadily weakening against the US dollar in recent months, making the cost of debt repayments even higher.

“It’s not going to be an overnight thing. We are at a bad place, depreciating shilling, debt and unemployment,” she says.

The disquiet in Kenya arises from the “sense of contradiction” between the “hustler narrative” about easing the cost of living that was sold during the campaign and the “reality where we are seeing taxes being increased on everyday goods”, according to Ken Gichinga, chief economist at business consulting firm Mentoria Economics.

He says rather than focusing on consumption taxes that raise the cost of living, the government should do more to spur private-sector growth.

He argues against the government housing projects being funded by the new levy, saying it is unlikely to resolve either the housing or unemployment problem.

“Lower interest rates, lower taxation, and loosen regulation. Do those three and the whole economy will be able to create jobs. Let the free market work.”

However, economic analyst Odhiambo Ramogi says he is convinced that that the president’s intentions are noble – though the methods “are wrong”.

He says the government should first cut waste before asking ordinary Kenyans to pay more.

The government accepts this point – David Ndii, its chief economic adviser, has acknowledged on Twitter that the government was “wasteful”.

Ndindi Nyoro, chairman of the parliamentary budget committee, told the BBC that the government’s tax plan was to ensure that government was not digging a bigger debt hole by borrowing more. He said the focus was on creating a balance to ensure what “will make Kenyans take part in baking the national cake”.

But a growing number of Kenyans do not think this is working and are taking to the streets to make their point.

Bruce Lee’s 50th anniversary commemorated by fans

This week, fans are conducting exhibitions and martial arts classes in Hong Kong to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the famous martial artist Bruce Lee’s passing in 1973.

At a time when racial stereotypes were prevalent, the celebrity paved the way for Asian males in Hollywood. Lee demonstrated that Asian males may be more than just valets or bad guys.

Lee, who was raised in Hong Kong after being born in San Francisco, continued his education there.

Before getting the part of Kato in the television series “The Green Hornet,” he taught martial arts and received little roles in Hollywood.

A martial arts movie called “The Big Boss” that he landed as the lead after returning to Hong Kong gave him his big break and, after the 1971 release of the movie, made him well-known throughout Asia.

Lee’s reputation as a ruthless, lightning-fast fighter was cemented by the success of “Fist of Fury” and “The Way of the Dragon” at the box office the following year.

His brain swelled, resulting in his death in 1973 at the age of just 32, and this was linked to a negative reaction to medications. “Enter the Dragon,” his fourth significant motion picture, had just wrapped up filming when he began work on his fifth.

Lee expressed a sort of Chinese culture in his films, according to film expert Aaron Han Joon Magnan-Park, who taught Lee’s films at the University of Hong Kong.

“I would call Bruce Lee a paragon of Sinophone soft power success with Hong Kong characteristics,” he says .

The scenes where he bares his torso and flexes his muscles were essential because they show how ripped bodies can belong to Asian heroes as well.

“He made Asian men sexy, and that is something I don’t think we talk about enough,” Magnan-Park says.
