The government of Algeria is taking stricter actions to prevent the spread of bedbugs, which have become a problem in France.
The health department in a country in North Africa said it will start checking and cleaning airplanes, ships, and vehicles at the places where they come into the country.
This is happening because lots of people from France travel to Algeria, and there is worry that the blood-sucking insects might also come along.
The government department said that there have been no reports of bedbugs infesting the country, but they advised people to stay alert.
Morocco, the country next to it, has already said that it will do things to prevent bedbugs from moving into its area.
There are more and more bedbugs in Paris and other cities in France, which is worrying because people are concerned about health and safety during the upcoming Olympic Games next year.

Restoration of India lander doubtful as lunar darkness approaches
Indian space scientists are saying it’s unlikely that the Moon lander will wake up as a new lunar night starts.
The Indian space agency Isro has not agreed if they will keep trying to communicate with the lander and rover. They said that the lander and rover finished everything they were supposed to do and even more.
Isro wished that the Vikram lander would start working again on or after 22 September when a new day on the moon started.
A day and night on the Moon each takes a little more than 14 days on Earth.
The spacecraft landed near the Moon’s south pole on August 23rd. It had a rover called Pragyaan inside. They worked for two weeks collecting information and pictures. Then, they were turned off when it became nighttime on the moon.
They picked a specific landing date that matched the lunar daybreak because they needed sunlight to charge and work properly.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) said at first that the lander and the rover would only work for 14 days on Earth. However, they later hoped that the batteries would recharge and the modules would wake up again when the sun rises on the moon.
But as more time passed without a signal from the lander, scientists told the BBC that the chances of it waking up were getting less and less likely.
G Madhavan Nair said on Friday that it’s very unlikely that the Vikram lander will start working because it hasn’t sent any messages yet.
“He said the equipment is not made to handle the very cold weather on the Moon, where temperatures at night can drop to as low as -200C to -250C (-328F to -418F). ”
Mylswamy Annadurai, the leader of India’s initial Moon expedition, said to the BBC that they will continue trying to reach the Vikram lander occasionally, but they will have to lessen their efforts.
We cannot keep resources locked up for too long to activate the Moon lander. We need to transfer them to monitor Aditya L-1, which is India’s first mission to study the Sun. “Now we have to keep an eye on Aditya and focus our attention on him,” he said.
“We need to recognize that it exists and continue forward,” he said.
Isro has been giving regular information about the lander and rover’s actions and discoveries, and they have also shared pictures taken by them.
It also said the mission achieved all of its goals. A few days ago, the person in charge of the Chandrayaan-3 project said that the lander did an unplanned hop experiment on the Moon and went beyond what it was supposed to do.
India achieved a significant milestone with its Chandrayaan-3 mission by becoming the first country to successfully land a spacecraft near the southernmost part of the moon.
It also became part of a special group of countries that successfully landed softly on the Moon. This group includes the US, the former Soviet Union, and China. -

Russian missile strike affected every household in every Ukrainian community – Mayor Terekhov
Russia attacked the city of Kharkiv with missiles on Friday morning, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.
He said on Ukrainian TV that a 10-year-old boy died when a house was hit. Over 20 other people got hurt.
The mayor also said that it is probable that Russia used Iskander missiles in the recent attack.
People from Hroza village were at a burial ceremony for a Ukrainian soldier from their village when a missile hit on Thursday.
The news agency, Interfax-Ukraine, reported that the man’s wife, son, and daughter-in-law were all killed, according to the local prosecutor, Dmytro Chubenko.
The soldier was originally buried in Dnipro, but his family wanted to move his body and bury him in his hometown.
Officials said that the people who were at the service were sitting down to eat when the missile struck the café, which also acted as a grocery store, in the village.
Speaking on Ukrainian TV, Mr Klymenko said that before the Russian attack, Hroza had a population of 330 people.
He said that every family and household had at least one person at the wake.
The initial information we have says that an Iskander missile hit the building, the minister said.
The leader of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said that the attack was one of the most violent crimes in the area.
“He said that twenty percent of the village has died in a terrorist attack. ”
The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, said that the act was so terrible that it couldn’t even be described as beastly, as that would be an insult to animals.
Starting from Friday, there will be three days of mourning in the Kharkiv region.
Maria Avdeeva, a security analyst and journalist from Ukraine, spoke to BBC Radio 4’s World Tonight. She suggested that someone might have informed the Russian military about the wake.
“She said that we can assume that someone told others about where and when these people are meeting. ”
In simpler words, the Russian propaganda channels are spreading false information about the funeral. They are saying that there were military gatherings, but that’s not true because it was mostly a ceremony for regular people.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the attack showed how far Russian forces are willing to go into evil actions. He made these comments after meeting Mr Zelensky before at a summit for the European Political Community. The summit was created last year as a response to the invasion of Ukraine.
The White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, said the strike was terrible and showed why it was crucial for Ukraine to keep getting help from other countries.
The situation happened when many people in the US House of Representatives are starting to disagree with giving more money to Ukraine.
The Kupyansk district has been in the middle of fighting between Russian and Ukrainian armies since Russian President Vladimir Putin started his big attack on Ukraine in February last year.
It was an important place where Russian forces got their supplies when the war started, but Kyiv took it back in September 2022 after fighting for many months. -

Biden gets more criticism for new border wall
People are angry at President Joe Biden because he decided to build a new border wall in Texas. Both Republicans and Democrats are upset about this.
Mr Biden said he couldn’t stop the work because the money for it was approved when Donald Trump was president.
People in his political party said that building walls is not effective, while the opposing party accused him of being hypocritical.
They will build about 20 miles (32km) of walls in a area where there are not many people near the Rio Grande Valley.
When Mr Biden was running for president in 2020, he said he wouldn’t make any new wall if he won. He said it was not a good solution to the problem.
But on Wednesday, his administration used its broad authority to exempt over 25 federal laws, including laws that protect animals, to permit the construction of additional barriers along the US-Mexico border in southern Texas.
In a message explaining these exceptions, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said there was a pressing and urgent requirement for the building work.
This made both major parties, environmental activists, and human rights groups criticize it quickly.
I attempted to convince them to use the money in a different way. Biden said that they did not do it and they would not do it. “I am unable to prevent it. ”
He said again that he doesn’t believe border walls work.
Mr Mayorkas said no to the idea that the government had changed its border policy by approving the new construction.
“He said that the government doesn’t think a border wall is the solution. ” “We still believe the same thing and we have never changed our mind. ”
However, the comments did not help stop the criticism from any point of view.On Thursday, the government said it would start sending back about 50,000 people from Venezuela who crossed the border between the US and Mexico illegally.
More and more people moving to cities like New York has become a problem for the president. He has been criticized a lot for how he has dealt with the border.
US authorities have captured and held over 2. 2 million people who crossed the US-Mexico border since last October.
Donald Trump, the ex-president, really wanted to make a wall at the border. But Mr Biden and other Democrats really didn’t like the idea.
Donald Trump himself stated that the new building project serves as evidence supporting his previous claims of being correct.
“Will Joe Biden say sorry to me and America for being slow to get started. ” he said in a message on his Truth Social website on Thursday.
Republicans were also upset with Mr. Biden because they believe he suddenly changed his positions on certain policies that he had campaigned against.
“He believed that walls are ineffective, which is completely crazy,” said North Carolina Republican Representative Ralph Norman in an interview with the BBC. “What’s different now. Let me explain what’s different – the American people are not happy and fed up with their cities being taken over. ”
Democrats, on the other hand, criticized the president.
Representative Henry Cuellar, who represents Starr County where the new building will happen, told the BBC that he does not think the people he represents will be pleased with the news.
He said he is still against using an old solution from the 14th century, which is called “the wall”, to solve a problem in the 21st century. “I would like to have more people and better technology. ”
Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said the policy was mean and asked President Biden to change his mind.
The Biden administration is receiving criticism from organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for its decision, which they consider a significant failure. -

TikTok still prohibited in Senegal
Senegal‘s government is still not allowing people to use TikTok, a social media app, since they banned it in August.
The authorities banned the app because they believed that it was used by bad people to spread harmful and rebellious messages that could harm the country.
Senegal’s Communications Minister, Moussa Bocar Thiam, announced on Thursday that TikTok will only be allowed back if they agree to remove accounts that promote harmful content.
“Currently, we will continue to have restrictions until we can reach a final agreement after discussing with company representatives,” Mr Thiam explained.
TikTok was banned after they arrested the opposition leader, Ousmane Sonko.
Officials said that the app was being used to send harmful and rebellious messages that were causing problems in the country as people started protesting violently after Mr. Sonko was arrested.
The government also wants TikTok to promise to pay Senegalese content creators fairly before they allow the app to come back. -

US restarts food assistance for refugees in Ethiopia
The United States has said that it will start giving food aid again to refugees in Ethiopia. This comes after a break of five months.
This happens after the government in Addis Ababa agreed to stop giving out the supplies.
Washington stopped giving aid in May because they discovered that a lot of food aid was being stolen. The United Nations had also stopped giving aid for the same reason.
Changes made by the Ethiopian government that allowed them to start receiving aid again include improving their supervision and tracking of goods, according to a statement from USAid.
Moreover, Ethiopia has given the duty to send and store food aid to someone else.
Many refugees in Ethiopia, who come from nearby countries like Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, and Eritrea, will receive help because aid is starting again.
But help with food for about 20 million Ethiopians who urgently need it is still on hold.
Government representatives in the war-ravaged area of Tigray had informed the BBC that around 1,400 people have died from starvation since aid was stopped. In the nearby region of Amhara, where conflicts and drought have worsened the situation, many people have also died due to lack of food assistance. -

11 people killed by Turkish airstrikes in northern Syria – Kurdish security forces
The Kurdish Internal Security Force said that Turkish airstrikes in northeastern Syria killed a minimum of 11 people in areas controlled by the Kurds. This was the Turkish military’s reaction to a bomb attack carried out by Kurdish militants in the capital city of Turkey.
The Kurdish Security Force, called Asayish, shared on their official website that Turkey attacked the areas near a camp for displaced people and some villages.
Asayish said that eleven people were killed, which included five regular citizens and six members of the Internal Security Forces.
Eight regular people and two members of the Kurdish security forces were injured, the report states.
Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Friday that it destroyed 30 targets and killed multiple Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in northern Syria. They claimed they were acting in self-defense and justified the strikes using Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
The strikes happened because of a bombing in Ankara. The PKK, a group that has been fighting for a long time and is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Sunday, militants took control of a car and caused an explosion outside Turkey’s Interior Ministry building, injuring two police officers. One civilian was also killed in the attack.
On Sunday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said their fighter planes destroyed 20 PKK targets in northern Iraq as a response to the attack.
According to Ankara, the PKK trains fighters who want to separate from Turkey and carries out attacks on Turkey from their bases in northern Iraq and Syria. In these areas, a Kurdish group associated with the PKK controls large parts of the land.
“At a news conference on Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the security forces and intelligence have found out that the terrorists came from Syria and were trained there during the investigation of the recent incident. ”
Fidan said that the Turkish Armed Forces would attack all PKK and YPG facilities in Iraq and Syria.
“The armed forces will respond strongly to the terror attack and the attackers will regret their actions,” Fidan stated.
The Kurds, who don’t have their own country, are the largest group of people in Turkey that are not Turkish. They make up about 15% to 20% of the total population, according to Minority Rights Group International.
Some parts of Kurdistan (a region that does not have its own government) are recognized by Iran and Iraq. Iran has a province called Kordestan, while Iraq has a self-governing region called Kurdistan Regional Government or Iraqi Kurdistan.
Recently, Turkey has been regularly doing missions to stop the PKK inside its own country and also crossing into Syria.
In November 2022, the city of Ankara accused the PKK of setting off a bomb in Istanbul. The attack resulted in the deaths of six people and caused injuries to many others.
In the mid to late 2010s, there were many sad attacks in Turkey. These happened because of the war in Syria, which made people feel unsafe. The war affected both Syria and Turkey as they share a border. -

‘Hand grenade fragments’ discovered in corpses on Wagner boss’s downed aircraft – Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the plane carrying Wagner warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin did not crash because of an attack from outside, but because of hand grenades inside the aircraft.
Speaking at a meeting in Sochi, Putin said that the head of the investigative committee recently stated that they found pieces of hand grenades inside the victims’ bodies. No outside force affected the plane, and this is something that we know for sure.
Prigozhin, a person who tried to rebel against the Russian government, was one of the 10 people on a private plane that crashed in a field in northwest Moscow in August while heading to St. PetersburgPetersburg is a city. Everyone on the ship, including Prigozhin and his most important assistants, died.
The Russian leader, whose government says they were not involved in the crash, did not explain how grenades could have exploded on the plane. However, he believed that investigators should have tested the bodies of the victims for drugs or alcohol.
“I said again, in my opinion they should have done a test but they didn’t,” he said, also mentioning that Russian security forces found 10 billion in cash and 5 kilos of cocaine in Wagner’s office in St Petersburg before. ”
Putin said that the leader of the investigation committee stated that it is alright to “share this information with the public” because it is a widely known and proven truth.
The accident happened exactly two months after Prigozhin’s rebellion against Russia’s military leaders. This rebellion was a major threat to Putin’s leadership, something that hadn’t happened in many years.
In June, Prigozhin and his Wagner troops took control of important military places and went towards Moscow, where the Kremlin had sent heavily armed troops to the streets. However, right before they were about to fight, an agreement was made that stopped the rebellion and sent Prigozhin and his fighters to Belarus, which is a nearby country.
After the crash that caused a lot of deaths, Russian officials started thinking about different possibilities related to the incident. One of these possibilities was the chance that it was done on purpose, according to Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, who spoke to reporters at the end of August.
US and Western intelligence officials had told CNN that they thought the crash was done on purpose. The President of the United States, Joe Biden, even said that Putin might have had something to do with it. “In August, he said that he wasn’t surprised, although he didn’t have definite information about what happened. ”
Peskov said that the Kremlin had nothing to do with the plane’s destruction and that any rumors about it are completely false. -

At least 89 people killed and hundreds more injured in drone attack on military college in Syria
The number of people who died when a drone carrying bombs hit a graduation ceremony at a military college in the city of Homs, Syria, increased to 89 on Friday morning. Almost 300 others were injured.
According to Syria’s state-run news agency, SANA, 5 kids and 31 women were killed.
Nobody has come forward and said they are responsible for the attack that happened on Thursday. In a previous statement, the defense ministry accused “terrorist groups helped by famous international people. ”
The ministry said in a statement that many soldiers were hurt, and some of the wounds were very serious. Families who were invited to the event, including women and children, were also hurt, as well as some college students who were graduating.
The Syrian military said the attack was really big and promised to respond forcefully and strongly. They warned that the people who planned and carried out the attack will face serious consequences.
The old city of Homs, previously famous as the main city of the Syrian revolution, experienced heavy fighting in 2012 between the government forces and the opposition fighters who wanted to remove President Bashar Al Assad from power. The city was taken over by the government in 2014, when the rebels gave up and left after being under attack for two years.
The city is in the middle of Syria’s farm area and has always been an important place for trade and transportation. The road that goes through Homs connects the city of Damascus in the south to the city of Aleppo in the north.
On Thursday, a group called the White Helmets, made up of around 3,000 volunteers who help save lives in Syria, said that the Syrian government forces carried out planned attacks on innocent people in the northwestern part of Syria. These attacks caused the deaths of at least 12 people and injured 49 others.
According to the group, 49 people were hurt, including 12 kids and 11 ladies.
Syria often bombs the area to fight against what they consider terrorists.
Big weapons were fired at lots of places in northwest Syria, including cities, towns, and villages in Idlib and the Aleppo countryside. The White Helmets stated that the attacks specifically targeted places like markets, schools, public facilities, and humanitarian workers.
On Wednesday, the group said that airstrikes hit a school in Sarmeen city in the eastern part of Idlib. One child died and six civilians were injured, including three girls (one of them being a baby) and two women.
The White Helmets have said that there have been three days in a row of heavy bombing in Northwest Syria that has caused a lot of deaths.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, at least 11 people were killed in another part of the country due to Turkish airstrikes. These airstrikes were aimed at areas in northeastern Syria that are under Kurdish control. This information was shared by Kurdish security forces in that region.
On Thursday, the Turkish government started a series of attacks on our areas in northeastern Syria. They used more than 15 drones to enter our airspace and targeted several positions, buildings, and gas and oil stations. This caused people to die or get hurt. The Kurdish internal security force, Asayish, said that the aggression also impacted areas where regular people live.
Turkey’s military has started a set of attacks by air on Kurdish targets in Syria and Iraq after a serious bombing in the Turkish capital on Sunday. The attack in Ankara was done by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been fighting against the government for many years and is considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union. -

Russian missile did not hit any military targets in a Ukrainian hamlet – Officials
A Ukrainian police official said that a village was hit by a Russian missile strike on Thursday, but there were no military targets there. This was one of the worst attacks on civilians since the conflict started, and the president of Ukraine called it inhuman and deliberate.
The military from Moscow attacked a café and store in Hroza, a town near the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine. They used a very strong ballistic missile called Iskander, according to Ukrainian officials. This attack resulted in the deaths of 51 people, including a young boy who was only 6 years old.
Pictures showed emergency workers walking through a lot of destroyed debris after the attack. This level of destruction hasn’t been seen since a Russian attack on a train station in Kramatorsk in 2022, where over 60 people died.
In a small community of 330 people, the number of people who died is very high. It means that out of every six residents, one person passed away.
Everyone who lives here are locals, and they are also regular people. There is no military equipment or vehicles at all. “All the people who were killed or injured were innocent civilians,” Sergey Bolvinov, the main investigator from Kharkiv’s regional police, explained to CNN in Hroza.
Investigators and forensic teams worked all night going through the debris, trying to count and recognize the bodies. The explosion was so powerful that many of the bodies were badly damaged. This information was reported by a CNN team at the location.
A man from the area whose wife died in the attack was seen kneeling beside her, feeling very upset and unable to talk or move away from her. Afterwards, he assisted the people in charge of emergency services in placing her body onto a truck so it could be transported elsewhere.
Bolvinov announced that they have identified the bodies of 35 victims up until now.
He said he believes that in the future, we will have enough evidence to catch and punish the Russian military who are responsible. He also mentioned that they are looking into the attack as a breach of war laws and customs.
There were new Russian bomb attacks in Kharkiv on Friday. Sadly, one child died when a building collapsed. The mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov, said that the strikes were only targeting civilian buildings.
Officials in Ukraine think that the attack included two Iskander missiles, which are the same type used in the Hroza strike.
In a message on Telegram, Terekhov said that a tall building with three floors was destroyed and two buildings with apartments were harmed, but that two individuals were saved by the emergency team.
Oleh Syniehubov, who is in charge of the Kharkiv region’s military administration, said that a total of 16 individuals were hurt, including a baby who is 11 months old. The boy who passed away was 10 years old, he stated.
Many people came together at a cafe in Hroza on Thursday to mourn the death of a Ukrainian soldier from the area. Suddenly, a missile hit the building and completely destroyed it, according to officials from Ukraine.
The soldier was originally buried in a city called Dnipro. However, his family wanted to move his remains to the village where he grew up. This information was shared by Dmytro Chubenko, who works for the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, in an interview with a Ukrainian news outlet called RBC. The explosion caused the death of some of the soldier’s family, including his son, according to Chubenko.
Ukrainian officials said Hroza was attacked by a missile called Iskander. This missile can travel a short distance and carry a warhead weighing between 500 and 700 kilograms.
Bolvinov said that Iskander is a very large missile. The building is completely ruined or wrecked. There was a lot of noise and confusion because many people were in the same room at that time.
After the attack, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, repeated his request for more air defenses from friends. He said that without additional support, it is difficult to keep people safe, especially with the expected bombings in the upcoming winter.
There isn’t anything written that can prevent such bad things from happening. However, there is protection against attacks from the air. There are big guns. These are our weapons. We have strong vehicles. Zelensky said that we have strong soldiers who are defending against Russian attacks.
We want the Russian acts of terror to be unsuccessful. And the world has what is needed to make sure of this,” he said. The most important thing is working together as one. The most important thing is to have faith in freedom and keep life safe.
During meetings in Granada, Spain, Ukrainian President Zelensky discussed Ukraine’s air defense needs with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Zelensky expressed his belief that significant progress has been made in obtaining the necessary support.
He said Ukraine will get six Hawk systems from Spain, and Germany will help provide Kyiv with another Patriot system because it is the only system that can handle such threats and attacks.
The White House said that the attack is another reason why Congress should give more aid to Ukraine.
White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre shared a scary story about going to the grocery store with your kids and witnessing a horrifying explosion. She then asked Congress for more money to respond to such incidents.
She made these comments during a time of political chaos in Congress, the part of government that makes laws, and a shortage of ammunition among NATO countries. The lack of ammunition puts the supply of military aid to Kyiv at risk.
Hroza is a place that is about 40 kilometers away from where the war is happening near Kupiansk. Kupiansk is a city in Kharkiv that was taken over by the Russian forces at the beginning of the war, but the Ukrainians were able to free it a year ago.
The Ukrainian army has been trying to stop the progress made by Moscow. Kyiv is an important city for strategic reasons. It helps stop Russia from getting to the Oskil River, which is easier to cross than other areas further south. -

IMF reluctant to approve Ghana’s second US$600 million bailout – Bright Simons
The Vice President of IMANI-Africa, a policy think tank, Bright Simons, said that the government is having difficulty getting approval from an IMF team visiting the country for the second portion of a $3 billion loan that was agreed upon earlier this year.
Simon claimed in a tweet that the situation was getting worse because of arguments between the governor of the Bank of Ghana and lawmakers from the opposition. These lawmakers want Governor Ernest Addison and his deputies to step down because they believe the bank is being poorly managed.
The argument between the Central Bank governor of Ghana and the Opposition MPs, who he calls ‘hooligans,’ happened at a very bad time. The government is having trouble getting the IMF to approve the $600 million payment before they leave. This doesn’t make things easier, the person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The meeting was taking place during the protest, so the governor sent the director in charge of security from the Board of Governors to collect the opposition’s petition.
The Members of Parliament (MPs) refused the representative because they wanted to personally give the petition to the governor. The director had explained that Addison and his deputies were in a meeting with the IMF team at that time.
The Governor criticized the opposition MPs for their recent protest and called it “completely unnecessary”. The protest happened on October 3, 2023, and the MPs were demanding resignation.
He said he would not quit like the Minority MPs want him to. -

Activist Narges Mohammadi, who is currently in prison in Iran, denounces sexual assault on women
Ali, who is sixteen years old, remembers the last time he saw his mom at home very clearly. She cooked eggs for him and his twin sister, Kiana, for breakfast. She told them to work hard in school, said goodbye, and sent them off to school. When they came back, she was not there. There were a total of 8 people.
Their mother is named Narges Mohammadi, who is well known for fighting for human rights in Iran. Unfortunately, this fight has taken a toll on her life.
Mohammadi has been locked up for most of the last twenty years. She has been punished many times for speaking up for those who cannot speak, for her constant fight against the death penalty and being locked up alone – which she has had to go through for weeks.
She is currently in jail for 10 years and 9 months, charged with doing things that harmed the country’s safety and spreading negative information about the government. She was also given a punishment of 154 lashes, which rights groups think has not been carried out yet. She also received restrictions on traveling and other activities.
But her strong voice has not been silenced even in the worst parts of Evin Prison in Tehran.
In a recording, Mohammadi can be heard leading chants of “woman, life, freedom” inside Evin prison. These chants were started last year after the death of Mahsa Jhina Amini while she was in custody of the morality police. She was taken into custody because it was believed that she was not wearing her headscarf correctly.
The recording is stopped by a short automatic message that says, “This is a call from Evin Prison. ” In the background, women can be heard singing a Farsi version of “Bella Ciao,” which is an old Italian song that people used to resist against Fascists. It has now been adopted by Iran’s freedom movement.
Mohammadi said to CNN that this period was a time of strong protest in the prison and it continues to be that way. He provided his responses in written form through intermediaries.
After Amini’s death, the Iranian government stopped the protests and the police continued checking if women were wearing headscarves in July. This week, Iranian activists claimed that some people attacked a teenage girl in a Tehran metro station because she was not wearing a headscarf. As a result, she was badly hurt and had to be taken to the hospital. Iranian authorities stated that the reason for the incident was low blood pressure.
Mohammadi is very aware of the consequences of speaking out in public. In August, she got one more year in jail for continuing to be active in prison after she talked to the media and spoke about sexual assaults that happen in jail.
She was already in prison for releasing a book last year about harsh prison methods in Iran, called “White Torture: Interviews with Iranian Women Prisoners,” and a film documenting the experiences of prisoners in isolation, which she herself has also experienced.
But she continues forward without losing confidence or being discouraged. Mohammadi wrote a long letter to CNN, where she strongly criticized the mandatory hijab and accused the Islamic Republic of being hypocritical by using sexual violence against female prisoners.
When the religious government took over four decades ago, they used the compulsory hijab to show their power and control over women as a way to control society.
“Her letter says that they couldn’t make half of the population, which is men, wear abayas and turbans in society. ” But they made it compulsory for many people in Iran to wear the hijab, veil, chador, manteau, and dark-colored trousers in order to show the negative side of the religious system to the world.
Think about Iranian women who have been made to wear head coverings, long coats, and dark pants in really hot weather for 44 years. And in certain areas, they even have to wear black chadors.
They have been feeling really bad because they have to wear hijab all the time. This is because Islamic men want to look good and protect women. Now, these women are going through unwanted sexual touching and mistreatment towards themselves.
Mohammadi wrote a letter to CNN and talked about incidents of sexual violence that happened to her and other female prisoners. These incidents occurred at different places starting from 1999.
She claims that security forces, prison staff, and medical workers attacked political prisoners and women who were held for committing crimes.
Mohammadi says that there has been a big increase in sexual violence against women who are imprisoned since the protests in Iran last year. She says that the abuse is now happening regularly and is part of a system.
Mohammadi says that the victims shared their stories with the officials who visited Qarchak prison for inspection. In jail, I listened to three women who were protesting and told me they were sexually attacked. One of them was a popular activist from the student movement. When she got put in prison, she complained to the authorities that when she was arrested on the street, her hand and leg got handcuffed and tied to two rings on the car door. And in that situation, someone touched her inappropriately without her consent.
Mohammadi says that she and another prisoner went to the prison’s “quarantine” section by pretending to bring food to another prisoner. They saw a young woman there who had bruises on her stomach, arms, legs, and thighs.
The Iranian government says that the accusations of sexual assaults against detainees, including a detailed investigation by CNN last year, are not true and have no evidence.
Mohammadi has been speaking out against sexual violence against prisoners for a long time, challenging norms in her traditional country. In 2021, she used an app called Clubhouse to have a talk with other women. They talked about how they were attacked by people working for the government from the 1980s until now, and Mohammadi was one of those women. She got in trouble for this, as Mohammadi and organizations that protect rights say.Women who are subjected to sexual harassment feel angry, scared, and insecure. However, if their identity as women is suppressed by ideological or religious beliefs, they not only experience anger and fear, but also feel deceived and manipulated by the government, which is even more distressing. Sexual abuse causes very deep emotional and mental pain that is hard to overcome, and it’s possible that some people may never fully recover from it.
Mohammadi has not been allowed to talk to her husband and children for 18 months because she refused to stay silent while in prison.
My wife is in prison, and I am very worried every day that I might hear something bad happened to her, said Taghi Rahmani, in an interview with CNN in France, where he has been living with their children since Mohammadi was imprisoned in 2015.
Rahmani and organizations that protect human rights are worried about Mohammadi’s health and her ability to get medical help. This is because she had a heart attack and had an operation last year.
He happily displays important awards he has received on her behalf. He said that she has a lot of energy and passion for freedom and human rights.
Rahmani, who was once a political prisoner for 14 years, met Mohammadi in 1995 when she came to his secret history classes.
For the past eight years, he has had to take on the role of both a dad and a mom for their twins, who are now teenagers.
Kiana always said that when mom is around, dad is not. “It’s bad,” he said. “But if someone decides on a course of action, they have to face all the difficulties that come with it. ”
Ali, similar to his father, is determined and says that his mother needs to continue moving forward “for Iran and for our future. ”
“I feel very happy and proud of my mother,” Ali said to CNN. “She wasn’t always around us, but whenever she was, she took care of us well. She was a good mom and still is. I have gotten used to this kind of life now. ” “I don’t care about any pain or hardship that I have to go through. ”
Kiana doesn’t want to talk to CNN and she wants her mom with her. Her dad says that Kiana thinks that if you have a child, you should take care of them and raise them.
Mohammadi feels the sadness of being away from her family every day. She chose to give up something valuable because she dreamed of being free in the future.
“I once told Ali and Kiana goodbye, and it felt similar to the time I nearly died in the tree-filled yard of Evin,” she tells CNN, but doesn’t mention exactly when that happened. I collected the dandelions from Evin’s yard. She stood without shoes on the hot pavement on July 14,” she said, talking about the day – just a few weeks after their last breakfast – when she said goodbye to her children in jail before they went to live in France. My feet felt like they were very hot, but my heart felt very passionate and excited. I released the dandelions into the air, and I saw my children’s hands, feet, and young faces. Tears streamed down my face, like rain in the springtime.
When I think about how I treated my family, it makes me feel like I was a complete stranger to my daughter and son. I wasn’t there for them during the most important parts of their lives, and I can never get that time back. But I believe that living in a world without freedom, equality, and peace is not worth it, and it’s not even worth observing.
She says she has decided not to see or hear her children, so she can speak up for oppressed people, especially women and children, from her country. -

19 people killed and 100 missing as glacial lake explodes in India
Over 100 people are lost in northeast India because heavy rain made a glacial lake break, causing sudden floods that tore through Sikkim, a state in the Himalayas. At least 19 people died, and the floods destroyed roads and bridges, according to the state government.
A heavy rainstorm happened over Lhonak Lake in the northern part of the state. This caused a lot of water to rush down the Teesta River in Sikkim’s Lachen valley. The water levels in the river rose 15-20 feet higher than usual, according to the Indian Army. A cloudburst is a rainstorm that happens very suddenly and causes a lot of damage.
Chungthang Dam, which is also called the Teesta 3 dam and is a part of a big hydropower project in the state, got completely destroyed, as said in a statement by the National Disaster Management Authority on Wednesday night.
The state government says that the drinking water supplies and sewage treatment plants in the affected districts have been completely destroyed.
A video from the northern part of the state shows a lot of muddy water overflowing the river, and houses that are covered in mud and debris because of the flood. The images also show search teams using big machines to dig out army vehicles buried in the thick mud.
Rescue and fixing work is happening now with state and national disaster workers involved, the government said.
The Himalayan region, also called the rooftop of the world, is susceptible to sudden floods and landslides. Flooding is a common occurrence in Sikkim.
However, scientists state that severe weather is happening more often and becoming stronger as the climate crisis caused by humans worsens.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) shared pictures of how much water came out of Lhonak Lake after the heavy rainfall.
Lhonak Lake is a big, bullet-shaped body of water that is formed by melting ice. It is located at the bottom of a glacier that is melting.
Looking at the pictures, we can see that over 60% of the water in the lake was lost after a big rainstorm caused the lake to overflow. This event occurs when a lake formed by a glacier becomes too full or when the land or ice around the lake breaks, causing the lake to overflow and release water and debris down the mountains.
A satellite picture showed a lake with 167. 4 hectares of water on September 28. But another picture taken on October 4 showed that the lake had shrunk by more than half, with only about 60. 3 hectares of water remaining.
The lake suddenly burst and approximately 105 hectares of land were drained out. This could result in a sudden flood in the Teesta River.
Scientists have been studying Lhonak Lake for a while. They have found that it is one of the glacial lakes in the area that is getting bigger very quickly. This means there is a high chance that the lake could burst its banks and cause a flood. Many studies have said this.
In the last few years, the state’s Disaster Management Authority went to the location on many trips. They found out that if the glacial lake burst, it would cause a lot of destruction downstream. It’s likely that people would lose their lives and property. Pipes were placed in the lake to take out the water as a temporary fix.
In May of last year, the government of the state gathered to discuss a possible danger. The director of Sikkim’s Department of Science and Technology emphasized the importance of creating a warning system for the glacial lakes in Sikkim.
The city of Pakyong in Sikkim was hit the hardest by the floods. According to the Sikkim government, seven people lost their lives and 59 people are currently missing.
Several members of the Indian Army are missing and their whereabouts are unknown. There is a big search going on to find the missing soldiers. However, the heavy rain and flooding have made it difficult because the roads are blocked and bridges are destroyed.
On Wednesday evening, the army said they found one soldier who was saved and is in a stable condition. However, 22 soldiers are still missing and haven’t been found.
The army said that some weapons and explosives were taken by the Teesta River. They asked people to stay alert and report anything strange or suspicious.
The military equipment that is missing could cause a big explosion, which could be very dangerous.
The government said that the flooding caused at least 11 bridges to collapse. This has made it difficult for rescuers to help people and has also blocked access to remote areas.
In the main city of Gangtok, three people died and 22 others are missing, according to reports.
More than 2,000 people had to leave their homes because of the floods, and the government set up special camps to help over 22,000 people who were affected.
On Thursday, the government of the state announced that around 3,000 tourists are stuck in Sikkim’s Lachung and Lachen areas. To rescue them, helicopters are being sent.
The Teesta-V Hydropower Station is currently not producing electricity and is shut down, according to the Power Ministry in India, as reported by All India Radio (AIR) News.
It said that the bridges downstream from Teesta-V Hydropower Station to Tarkhola and Pamphok have been underwater, which has made it very difficult for people to travel and communicate in those areas.
According to AIR News, the government will examine the damage caused to the hydropower projects once the flood water goes down.
The weather department of India says that it will keep raining heavily in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country, including Sikkim, for the next two days.
The chief minister of Sikkim, Prem Singh Tamang, said on X (formerly Twitter) that they have sent help to the areas affected by the flooding. He also visited Singtam, a town that has been affected by the flooding and is about 30 kilometers (18 miles) away from Gangtok, to see the damages and talk to the local people.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the situation as a “sad event caused by nature” and promised to provide any help needed to deal with the problem.
“I am hoping that everyone who has been affected stays safe and has a good health,” he wrote on X.
The Himalayan region is very sensitive to the climate emergency.
Glaciers in the Himalayas give water to rivers which then provide fresh water to two billion people. Many communities rely on this glacial water to water their crops.
A new report has said that as temperatures get warmer, the glaciers could melt and their ice could reduce by 80% by the year 2100. This could lead to more floods, landslides, avalanches, and droughts happening.
As ice in glaciers is melting very quickly, about 15 million people who live close to glacial lakes are in danger of dangerous glacial lake bursts. The majority of these people live in four countries: India, Pakistan, Peru, and China. This information comes from a study conducted earlier this year.
These lake bursts are like a big wave that happens on land, similar to a dam breaking suddenly. Experts said this causes a lot of damage.
The floods that follow can occur without any warning and previous bursts of glacial lakes have caused the death of thousands of people and damage to property and important infrastructure.
In a study conducted in 2020, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati observed that the Teesta River basin has experienced more rainfall and higher temperatures in recent years. They also discovered that the glacial lakes in Sikkim are getting larger because the glaciers and snow are melting as the temperatures increase.
The scientists said that heavy rain can make lakes get bigger suddenly, which might cause dangerous floods. They said it’s very important for government departments to have the right tools to deal with these disasters, and for leaders to make plans to adapt to climate change.
In 2021, a big block of ice in the Himalayan mountains in Uttarakhand broke and caused a lot of water, dust, and rocks to fall down a steep slope. This damaged two power projects that use water to produce electricity and resulted in the death of at least 38 people.
In the northern part of India, people have been expressing concerns for many years about uncontrolled commercial growth, cutting down trees, and continuously constructing dams in the delicate area. These activities are making the region more susceptible to disasters like floods and landslides. -

France to start removing its troops from Niger
France is planning to start moving its soldiers out of Niger beginning this week.
There was a problem between the two countries after a takeover in a country in West Africa two months ago.
France said it did not accept or recognize the new military government in the country that used to be its colony. This caused people to come out and protest in the capital city, Niamey.
After saying no for a long time, France now seems eager to convey that it wants to leave Niger as quickly as it can.
Over 400 soldiers near the border with Mali will be the first to leave, possibly starting Thursday.
An additional 1,000 soldiers are at a military base in Niamey. They are there because protesters have been staying there for many weeks, asking them to leave. The protesters believe that the soldiers have not been able to stop attacks by Islamist rebels.
Last year, fewer people died in terror attacks in Niger. However, it is not known how much the French helped Niger’s armed forces while fighting against groups connected to Islamic State and al-Qaeda.
It is too soon to tell if their leaving will make security worse.
The United States still has a place to operate drones in that area, and the forces from Niger are some of the most well-prepared in the surrounding area.
Since the coup, there have been many attacks by rebels. In addition, violence has increased greatly because foreign forces left Mali.
Western countries have given a lot of money to Niger to help with security. Niger is the only country in the region that supports them. -
Ex-convict back on the hunt for governor
A man with a weapon went into Wisconsin’s state Capitol and asked to see the governor. He was arrested but then released after paying money as a promise to come back to court later. However, he returned again.
The man without a shirt, who is unknown at the moment, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon for having a gun in the building without permission.
However, he was released from jail by paying bail and came back later that evening with a rifle that can be used for attacking.
This happens as there have been many violent threats towards public and elected officials in the US recently.
According to Tatyana Warrick, a spokesperson for the Department of Administration, Governor Tony Evers, who is a Democrat, was not in his office on the first floor of the state’s capitol building at that time.
A man with a holstered gun came to the office at around 3:00 PM EST (7:00 PM GMT) on Wednesday and asked to see Mr. Evers
If someone hides a weapon and has permission, they can bring it into the building. But this man didn’t have permission and a police officer from the state capitol arrested him.
But, after he was arrested and taken to the Dane County Jail, he paid money to be released and came back to the capitol grounds just before 10:00 PM EST with a gun that shoots automatically. The building shuts down at 7:00 PM EST.
Ms Warrick informed the BBC that the person who tried to attack someone was arrested again on Wednesday night for a mental health assessment. However, she is not sure if they are still in police custody.
The city police in Madison said in a report: “The person was placed under the care of the police and taken to a nearby hospital. ”
The governor’s office could not be contacted right away for comment. -
World Cup 2034 : Saudi Arabia announces bid to host world cup
Saudi Arabia has announced its bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The bid aims to deliver a world-class tournament inspired by Saudi Arabia’s ongoing social and economic transformation and its deep-rooted passion for football, according to a statement from the Saudi Arabian football federation.
This announcement comes a year after Qatar hosted the first World Cup in the Middle East. FIFA, the governing body for world football, also released a statement inviting countries in the Asian Football Confederation to bid for the 2034 World Cup.
Saudi Arabia has been actively involved in hosting major sporting events, including the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup and the 2027 Asian Cup.
That event will enable Saudi officials to improve on existing football infrastructure, with new “world-class stadiums” constructed “in the most sustainable ways”, Saudi Football Federation President, Yasser Al Misehal, said on Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia previously explored a tri-continental World Cup bid with Egypt and Greece, though that plan has been shelved.
The new Saudi-only bid means fans would face “maximum three-hour flying times between cities and stadiums”, Misehal said.
The Asian Football Confederation came out in support of the Saudi 2034 World Cup bid shortly after it was announced on Wednesday.
“I am delighted to note that the (Saudi football federation) have presented their intention to bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2034,” said AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.
“The entire Asian football family will stand united in support of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s momentous initiative, and we are committed to working closely with the global football family to ensure its success.”

At least 51 people are killed in a Russian strike in north-east Ukraine
A military attack from Russia in the northeastern part of Ukraine resulted in the death of at least 51 individuals, according to officials.
The attack took place in a village called Hroza, which is close to Kupyansk in the Kharkiv region.A six-year-old boy was one of the people who died when the attack occurred at 1:15 pm local time.
Villagers from Hroza came together at a nearby cafe to mourn the death of someone from their community, according to reports. In a message on Telegram, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “genocidal aggression. ”
Videos of rescuers looking for dead bodies and climbing over debris have been shared from the Kharkiv area.

Forbes drops Trump from its list of richest people
Former US President Donald Trump is no longer wealthy enough to be included in the Forbes 400 list, according to Forbes magazine.
His estimated net worth has dropped to $2.6 billion, down from $3.2 billion the previous year, which was enough to secure a place on the 2022 rich list.
However, Trump’s current net worth falls $300 million short of the baseline required to make the Forbes 400 list.
The richest person in America, according to Forbes, is Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with a net worth of $251 billion.
Forbes also noted that Trump has long been obsessed with the Forbes 400 list and has frequently made false claims to reporters in an attempt to rank higher.
Trump’s exclusion from the Forbes 400 list coincides with his ongoing civil fraud trial in New York, where he is accused of exaggerating his wealth and property values.
Forbes attributes his decline in net worth to his social media venture, Truth Social, which has struggled to gain traction and has far fewer users compared to other social media platforms like Twitter.

Angelina Jolie calls Judge “bias” in custody case with ex-husband Brad Pitt
Hollywood actress and director Angelina Jolie has alleged bias on the part of the judge who oversaw her child custody case with ex-husband Brad Pitt. She is now using her experience to advocate for legislation called “Piqui’s Law,” which would mandate domestic violence training for judges, mediators, and other court professionals to educate them about the effects of child abuse and trauma.
In a letter dated September 29 addressed to California Governor Gavin Newsom, Jolie expressed her support for the legislation and detailed her own experiences with a judge who, in her view, favored her ex-husband and did not allow her children to testify about domestic violence they had experienced.
Jolie’s advocacy for “Piqui’s Law” stems from the challenges she faced during her child custody case, and she aims to prevent such biases and ensure the protection of children in similar situations.
“This is personal to her, and for good reason,” a source close to Jolie told The Post.

“Look at what she faced from a biased judge who was removed by the appellate court for his corrupt and secretive financial dealings with Brad Pitt’s team that violated judicial ethics in her family’s case, and who refused to review evidence of domestic abuse.“It’s no surprise she has taken on this specific issue. Their whole family is a victim of system failure. She has been fighting privately for her family and publicly for other families for years.”
Judge John W. Ouderkirk, a retired private judge who officiated Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s wedding, ruled in May 2021 that the couple would share 50/50 custody of their six children. Jolie expressed concerns that Ouderkirk denied her children the opportunity to testify, despite California law allowing children aged 14 and older to do so.
In response, Jolie filed a petition in the appellate court to have Ouderkirk removed from the case. In July 2021, the appellate court ruled that Ouderkirk should be disqualified due to insufficient disclosure of business relationships with Brad Pitt’s attorneys, effectively ending his involvement in the custody case.
“Judge Ouderkirk was not in business with anyone,” sources close to Pitt’s legal team said. “Like other private judges, he was engaged by both Ms. Jolie’s and Mr. Pitts attorneys on other cases, which he disclosed.” A source close to Brad Pitt reportedly told the Post.“It’s disappointing but not surprising that she would continue to manipulate the media and the public with [Donald] Trump-like distortions and to deliberately make misrepresentations without any regard for the damage it causes to innocent third-parties just trying to do their jobs.”
“While the legislation she is supporting is potentially very viable, it has nothing to do with her custody case. It is inexplicable why she would use her advocacy for another defamatory effort to disregard all the objective facts in order to advance her own interest.”
If passed, Piqui’s Law, named after a 5-year-old boy who was killed by his father in 2017— also would prevent abused children from being separated from their non-violent parent, as well as block children from going into reunification camps. -
Whether in jail, hell, or heaven you will account – Prof Gyampo to ‘arrogant’ BoG Boss
Professor Ransford Gyampo, a distinguished political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has voiced sharp criticism against Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), for what he perceives as an “arrogant” response to the OccupyBoG movement.
In an open letter addressed to Dr. Addison, Prof. Gyampo delivered a stern message, stating, “Whether you resign or not, you would by all means, account one day, for your stewardship either in heaven or in hell or in prison or in your home.”
The controversy stems from Dr. Addison’s dismissal of calls for his resignation, primarily emanating from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority caucus in Parliament. In an interview with the international business website Central Banking, Dr. Addison firmly asserted that he would not step down, labeling the NDC-led protests as “completely unnecessary.”
Furthermore, Dr. Addison commented on the matter, saying, “The Minority in parliament have many channels to channel their grievances in civilized societies, not through demonstrations in the streets as hooligans,” in reference to the #OccupyBoGProtest.
Prof. Gyampo’s open letter goes on to accuse the Governor of various actions, including spending approximately GH¢137 million on vehicle maintenance, overseeing the collapse of over 400 banks and micro-finance companies, printing an excessive amount of GH¢700 trillion within just two years, and depleting foreign reserves. He questions the Governor’s response to taxpayers’ discontent, asserting that it reflects a preference for partisanship over competence.
Prof. Gyampo urges Dr. Addison to remember that “printing money does not make you the owner of human life and human rights.” He emphasizes that previous Bank of Ghana Governors, such as G.K. Agamah, K. Dufuor, P. Acquah, and N. Ishahakku, were characterized by their sobriety and competence, implying that the current Governor’s behavior falls short of these standards.

Mohbad’s death- VIDEO :Sam Larry and Naira Marley in court earlier today
A video of Naira Marley and Sam Larry at the Magistrate court in Yaba where they were arraigned by the Lagos state police command has been shared online.
A Magistrate Court sitting in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Wednesday has remanded Azeez Fashola, alias Naira Marley, and Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, alias Sam Larry, to police Custody.
The Lagos State Police Command requested that Fashola and the others be remanded for 30 days pending the completion of their investigation
However, Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun ruled that Fashola and the others be remanded for just 21 days.
Since Mohbad’s demise on September 12, 2023, there have been a series of protests in some parts of the country for justice, owing to the controversy surrounding his death.
As part of the efforts to resolve the controversy surrounding his death, a coroner’s inquest began last Friday in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
In a letter dated September 18, 2023, the law firm Falana & Falana Chambers asked the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada, to unravel the circumstances surrounding what it described as the “very tragic” death of the late Mohbad under “mysterious” circumstances.
In its reply to the firm’s letter, the coroner, Magistrate Shotobi said she had the directives of the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Justice Dada, to convoke an inquest pursuant to the extant provisions of Sections 14 & 15 of the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, Cap C15, Laws of Lagos State 2015.
At the hearing last Friday, Mrs Funmi Falana, who represented Mohbad’s family, told journalists after the proceeding that the hearing of evidence would commence on October 13.

South Africa takes steps to secure its open borders
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has started a new border force to make the country’s borders stronger.
The inauguration happened in the town of Musina, where the busy Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe is located.
Immigration is a very important political problem in South Africa.
Controlling the borders has become chaotic, and the government is being asked to do more to limit the number of people entering the most advanced country in sub-Saharan Africa from its neighboring countries.
At the same time, political parties are using xenophobia to gain support from unhappy South Africans before the 2024 elections.
Until now, four different government departments were responsible for looking after the borders. They had to follow 58 laws made by the government.
But now the Border Management Authority, which was very expensive to create, is now South Africa’s third organization responsible for enforcing laws, after the police and army.
The creation of the agency means that South Africa now has a border police bureau that works together under one leadership.
Many border guards have been hired and will be working alongside the defense force. They will be working at the entry points of South Africa, which include eight ports where ships arrive, 52 borders where people can enter by land, and eleven airports where people can come from other countries.
The event was also attended by Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who had discussions with Mr Ramaphosa earlier.
The leader of South Africa said that both men agreed that our countries want to live peacefully beside each other.
South Africa has faced more problems with its border control recently.
A really expensive fence that was built between South Africa and Zimbabwe fell down, making it hard to prevent people from illegally immigrating.
In simpler terms, many police officers have been caught and arrested for being corrupt. They were asking for bribes.
South Africa counted its population in 2022, and the compiled information will be made public on 10 October.
Information from the 2011 census showed that there were 3. 96 million people from other countries living in South Africa, some of whom did not have official documents. Statistics South Africa confirmed that this means approximately 6% of the people living in the country.
Many people think there might be a lot more illegal immigrants than what is officially reported. They say the government is not doing enough to stop undocumented foreigners from coming into the country.
Some groups, like the street movement Operation Dudula, say that illegal migrants are causing a lot of crime.
The argument about immigration is often spoiled by violence, fear of foreigners, and false information. Some jobless people in South Africa have been made to think that undocumented migrants from other African countries are taking their jobs.
This week, the police closed down shops owned and operated by people from outside South Africa in Soweto. This happened when two kids died after eating biscuits they bought from a nearby store. -

MohBad’s death: Primeboy surrenders to the police
Owodunni Ibrahim Oluwatosin, also known as Primeboy, has turned himself into the Lagos State Police Command. The police had declared him wanted after he failed to respond to their invitation regarding the investigation into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad.
The Lagos State Police Command had announced a reward of N1 million for anyone with useful information leading to Primeboy’s arrest. However, he voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities as confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin.
Hundeyin stated, “Following his being declared wanted, Owodunni Ibrahim Oluwatosin aka Primeboy has turned himself in. He has, immediately, been taken into custody for interrogation and other necessary actions.”
The spokesman also assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring a diligent investigation.
“The Command equally assures that all persons found culpable in the death of Mr Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad will definitely be brought to justice,” he concluded.

Interim president of Gabon announces the assembly’s appointments
Gabon’s temporary leader, General Brice Oligui Nguema, has announced that he will soon choose people to be part of the temporary government. He wants to show that his government is dedicated to listening and talking with people.
He shared this information on X, which used to be called Twitter, after meeting the President of the Central African Republic, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, during a formal trip to Bangui on Wednesday.
We don’t know when the appointments will happen yet, but the announcement came while they are still figuring out who should be in the National Assembly and the Senate.
In September, Gen Nguema chose the leaders of both the legislative bodies. However, he still has to pick the rest of the members of parliament in the future.
The temporary leader of one country told the leader of another country about the progress made in their government transition since Ali Bongo was removed from power. They also talked about news from the continent and the region, improving their relationship, and the plan to soon open embassies in each other’s countries.
He went to the CAR after meeting the presidents of Equatorial Guinea and Congo-Brazzaville. He wanted their help to lift the sanctions on Gabon after the coup. -
Mohbad’s death: Primeboy reveals fight between late singer, wife before death
Afro singer and songwriter, Owodunni Ibrahim, also known as Primeboy, has disputed the police’s claim that he ignored their invitation for questioning regarding the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. The Lagos State Police Command had confirmed Primeboy’s detention, which occurred less than 24 hours after he was declared wanted, with a N1 million bounty on his head.
In an interview before turning himself in, Primeboy made several revelations and claimed that Mohbad’s wife was attempting to frame him. He vehemently denied ignoring a police invitation and stated that he would not refuse cooperation with the authorities.
“Before being declared wanted I wanted to turn myself in – I mean to explain myself at the station because they started accusing me wrongly. People that I called said I should chill, I shouldn’t go anywhere, and should wait for them to invite me.
“So I kept waiting and suddenly I found myself wanted online yesterday. People started calling me that N1 million for anyone who finds me and I was shocked and surprised. I called my lawyer and family and they said I should calm down and that nothing would happen, so far I know nothing about it.”
Primeboy also insisted he was not with Mohbad the day he died.
“I wasn’t with him when he died, because we departed after his show on Sunday.
“He chased me out of the car that day because he and his wife were having a hidden conversation, it was his family affair.
“I want justice for Mohbad and I want his wife to stop framing me online, that’s wrong.”

Can Xue: Chinese novelist who started writing again at age 30
Despite being relatively unknown in her own country, she is a Chinese author who has been highly speculated to win the Nobel Prize in Literature this year.
In the end, Can Xue, a writer of unconventional fiction, did not win, but Jon Fosse from Norway did. However, Can Xue has become much more famous.
She had a difficult childhood during a very chaotic time in the 20th Century.
Can Xue was one of eight children and she was a teenager when the Cultural Revolution began in China. This period brought about a lot of chaos and violence for almost ten years.
When the Communist purge happened, her father, who worked as a director at a newspaper, was sent to the countryside and made to do hard manual work. Her mother, who had the same job, was also made to do it.
When her mom and dad were taken, she, her brothers and sisters, and their grandma had to take care of themselves. They were able to stay alive by eating pumpkin flowers and weeds that they collected from the mountains. At some point, they had to eat Can Xue’s father’s old clothes, including a fur coat. Her grandma got sick from working too much and not eating enough, and she later died from swelling.
Can Xue could not continue her education and only finished elementary school. She started writing again when she was almost 30 years old.A coming together of Eastern and Western cultures.
Can Xue is a writer who was born in 1953 in Hunan province and uses the pen name Deng Xiaohua.
When she was young, her father owned many books about philosophy, particularly Marxism, and she was always around them.
But everything changed when the Cultural Revolution occurred. This was a movement started by Mao Zedong to get rid of things in society that were considered against communism, such as capitalist ideas, traditional practices, and cultural elements.
Her parents were mistreated along with many others in the country. They were publicly embarrassed, put in jail for no reason, hurt, and had their things taken away.
This means that she was not able to receive a proper education. However, she still loved to read and write. She learned English on her own and read a lot of books from the Western world while she had different types of jobs. She did many jobs like being a teacher, a tailor who worked for herself, and even an unlicensed village doctor in China.
She started writing in the 1980s and created a unique style different from other Chinese authors, but this style made her not well-known.
“Chen Xiaozhen, an editor at her publisher Hunan Wenyi, said in a report in the South China Morning Post that many readers dislike her writing style, but it also makes Can Xue stand out and be different. ”
Today, she has written many books, including novels, shorter novels, and short stories, and some of them have been translated into English.
In 2015, her book The Last Lover received a prize for being the best translated fiction. She was also nominated for the International Booker prize in the past for her book Love in the New Millennium.
She mentions famous Western writers like Kafka, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, and Dante as major inspirations for her writing.
According to an article on the China Internet Information Centre, she said her ideas come from the West, but she brings them to China to develop and grow in its deep and rich history of 5,000 years.
I don’t make art like the West or China, but I create my own unique style. I love Chinese culture very much. I came into the world in this place. I stay here. I don’t have to learn what my heart already knows.
If Can Xue had won, she would have been the second person from China to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature. The first person to win that prize was the novelist Mo Yan in 2012.
Can Xue was competing against famous and respected authors like Margaret Atwood, Haruki Murakami, and Salman Rushdie. However, she was considered one of the top contenders by the bookmakers this year.
The committee that gives out awards said that they are giving a prize to the person who has created the best piece of literature that goes in the right direction. The winner gets a lot of money.China’s literary atmosphere refers to the overall characteristics and trends in the world of literature in China.
When someone asked Can Xue about her thoughts on China’s literary scene, she expressed dissatisfaction and negativity.
“I’ve said it before, but I don’t have any hope,” she said to a Chinese news outlet called Sixth Tone in an interview conducted in 2016. In China, people are holding on to old things and not changing or throwing them away. If you don’t follow tradition with them, then you’re seen as different and ignored.
But Can Xue, who lives in Beijing, said she will keep writing for the young people of China.
There are only a few forward-thinking Chinese people at the moment, so I have high expectations for the young generation. “They are in their twenties now,” she said.
“In 20 years, if people have spiritual problems or if material things don’t fulfill their needs, they may choose to read one of my books. ” -
Is anyone reading the paper? – Elizabeth Ohene quizzes
I have been watching the newspaper scene here with deep anxiety. Every newspaper in the country is struggling. But in the wider context, that is not strange.
Well-established and prosperous newspapers around the world have folded up and staff levels have been reduced drastically.
I suppose my anxiety is not surprising really, seeing that it is with a newspaper that I started my working life.
The media generally, and newspapers in particular, are trying very hard to adapt to the changing times and the technology that has brought such dramatic changes to the industry.
The changes mean that “newspapers” are now online entities more than papers that you hold in your hands and read.
More people go to their phones and laptops to read the news and articles published in newspapers than from the paper.
So, is it still a newspaper when it is online and not at the newsagents?
Many of the famous newspapers have paywalls on the sites and you have to pay before you can read online.
Some say they are free but try to shame us readers into taking subscriptions and reminding us every day that unless we pay, they will go under.
Oldest
A few months ago, in July, one of the newspapers that contested the title of the world’s oldest national newspaper printed its last daily edition almost 320 years after it began.
Wiener Zeitung, a Vienna-based daily newspaper, which was owned by the Austrian government but editorially independent, decided it would no longer print daily editions after a change in the law meant it could not be profitable any longer as a print product.
The law, which was passed by the Austrian government, ended a legal requirement for companies to pay to publish public announcements in the print edition of the newspaper, terminating Wiener Zeitung’s role as an official gazette.
This change resulted in an estimated €18m loss of income for the publisher and forced the paper to cut 63 jobs, including reducing its editorial staff from 55 to 20.
It will now be published only online.
The newspaper began publishing in August 1703, and in its first edition, it said it would provide a straightforward account of the news “without any oratory or poetic gloss”.
In 1768, it reported on a concert starring a certain “especially talented” 12-year-old named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
In its last daily print edition, it ran an editorial blaming the government’s new law for the end of its print run and said: “These are stormy times for quality journalism, on more and more platforms, serious content vies for attention with fake news, cat videos and conspiracy theories.”
The EU Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová told the Austrian news agency, APA, that she was “not happy with the situation” at the newspaper.
She might not be happy with the situation, but that has not changed the fact that the newspaper has closed its print edition.
Rules
Over here, our newspapers seem to defy all the economic rules.
I am told many of them don’t pay their staff, period.
There are some of the newspapers that I have never seen at a newsagent, nor a traffic light, being hawked by one of the enterprising young men.
Many of the newspapers, I am told, make no effort to even sell copies and consider their work done, when stories they have published are listed for discussion on the morning shows of the radio and television stations.
The newspaper reading habits of the public are even more worrying.
I write a column for the Daily Graphic and out of ten people who call or send me messages about what I write, it is very rare that there would be two people who would have seen the article and read it in the newspaper; almost all of them would have read it online.
But it is not a problem of people only reading articles online.
It looks like the few people who buy or read newspapers only do so on working days, or maybe read copies that are bought for their offices.
Why else are newspapers no longer published on public holidays that fall on weekdays?
The publishers know that nobody will buy them.
I know we have always had difficulty with people buying papers at weekends.
Cecil King and the Mirror Group who established the Graphic discovered this quite early and that is why the Sunday Mirror newspaper was sold on Saturdays and not on Sundays.
It then became The Mirror.
It looks like we do not read newspapers at home.
I am sure Tarzan would have something to say on this, having tried to break the Sunday taboo and failed.
So, maybe I shouldn’t get excited about an article I read a few days ago about an attempt to break the online newspaper stranglehold.
In this digital age of 24-hour rolling news, when newspapers worldwide are investing resources in their online editions, a US publisher has gone back in time and launched a print-only broadsheet in the style of a 19th-century newspaper.
The County Highway newspaper Called County Highway, the publisher says it is responding to a demand from readers for in-depth stories and writing that needs time to savour.
And it will not have an internet edition.
Repeat, it will not have an internet edition.
“People read differently on the printed page than they do on a screen,” said the newspaper’s editor, David Samuels.
“The printed page is an immersive experience without constant distractions or the spectre of other people’s responses on social media.
It’s a much more enriching and human experience.”
An editor’s note co-written with the newspaper’s editor-at-large really hit home with me.
It said: “We are deeply and personally bored to death of hyperbolic chatter about politics, gadgets and the semiotics of Taylor Swift from people who know nothing and come from nowhere.”
The newspaper costs $8.50 per copy.
The first issue had no advertising.
However, through word of mouth, its 25,000 copies sold out.
The publisher, Donald Rosenfeld, is quoted as saying he believed that there was a demand for in-depth articles: “I think we’re bringing water to the desert.
It’s an overnight success.
“Someone called from a large corporation and said: ‘I want to buy 1,000 subscriptions to give to my workers.
Rather than have them doing their Instagram pages and Facebook, I’m going to tell them: ‘Read something that’s actually elevating.’”
In a place where the major problem is about people not being able to read at all, I know it is absurd to be worrying about whether people are reading online or on paper.
But how I wish there were enough people here who are “deeply and personally bored to death of hyperbolic chatter from people who know nothing” and who would support a newspaper that you can hold in your hand and which stimulates ideas.

Asiedu Nketiah is one of Ghana’s richest politicians – Allotey Jacobs
Former Central Regional chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Allotey Jacobs has made an interesting remarks about the national chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah
According to Allotey Jacobs, Asiedu Nketiah popularly known as General Mosquito one of the richest politicians in Ghana up to date.
“Asiedu Nketiah is a rich politician. He has monies that others don’t have so he shouldn’t sit on radio make such remarks. He is one of the richest Ghanaian politicians. By virtue of his DNA, he doesn’t grow big but he is loaded” he said on Accra based Angel FM.
Mr Allotey comments was a sharp response to earlier remarks by Asiedu Nketiah arguing that Ghana ready for a coup.
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, earlier this week expressed apprehension about the state of Ghana’s democratic stability, primarily due to ongoing economic hardships.
During an interview on Joy News, he voiced concerns regarding the potential for political instability in the country.
Nketiah emphasised that the prevailing tolerance among Ghanaian citizens has been a crucial factor in preventing the nation from sliding into turmoil.
He also drew attention to Ghana’s historical instances of coups that were instigated by conditions less severe than the current economic challenges.
“Ghana is more than ripe for a coup d’état, but the only thing that is saving us is the tolerance of Ghanaians.
“If you look at our history, you will see that the things that have led to previous coup d’états in this country were even less than what is happening now. But the only thing that is saving us is tolerance and our collective history,” myjoyonline.com quoted him as saying.
But this remarks doesn’t sit well with lot of Ghanaians including Allotey Jacobs who argued that he understands why a national chairman of the leading opposition party in Ghana will call for coup.
“He has been a beneficiary of coups in Ghana, in 1981. I was victim of that coup and I saw people suffered. How many people have you helped that you are saying Ghana is ripe for a coup. Instead you giving hope to people this what you saying”. he added

Police Commander fired after fabricating illness to travel to Turkey
A police officer got fired because he lied about being sick to take a vacation.
Nottinghamshire Police Constable Joseph Jennings asked twice for time off, including April 29th, but his request was denied because there were not enough staff available.
That morning, a few hours before he was supposed to work, he sent a text to his boss saying he had a stomach virus called norovirus.
But it was later discovered that this was not true, as PC Jennings had actually flown to Turkey with his partner the day before.
The police in Nottinghamshire have allowed PC Jennings to take time off work from April 30th to May 3rd, but not on April 29th.
The force had a meeting to discuss bad behavior that happened quickly on Thursday. PC Jennings said he was sorry for what he did and admitted that he made a bad choice, which he promises not to do again.
He said that the holiday couldn’t be canceled and that he wanted to take April 29th off.
In the hearing, Chief Constable Kate Meynell led the meeting. They were informed that PC Jennings’ team did not have enough staff, which is necessary. PC Jennings’ actions were described as dishonest, reckless, and selfish.
The officer was fired after the meeting.
Ms Meynell expressed that it is reasonable for the public to not expect this type of behavior from police officers.
The officer asked for time off from work, but it was denied because we need enough staff to keep our communities and each other safe.
The public should expect that when a police officer does something very wrong, their actions will be questioned and addressed to make sure that people can still trust and have confidence in them. -
Police seek suspect in activist’s killing in New York City
The police are looking for someone they don’t know who killed a person fighting for fairness. The victim was stabbed many times while walking home from a wedding in New York.
Ryan Carson, who was 32 years old, was killed close to a bus station in a neighborhood called Crown Heights in Brooklyn on the 2nd of October.
The person being accused, who is not known by their name, was behaving in a restless or irritated way before the sudden attack happened without any reason.
Mayor Eric Adams promised that the police will keep working until someone is arrested.
The video from a surveillance camera shows the person suspected of a crime wearing dark clothes. Carson and another woman, who is not known, were seen sitting on a bench near a bus stop around 4:00 in the morning.
Officials say that Mr. Carson and his friend started to leave when they saw the suspect knocking over scooters. But then the suspect came up to them and started yelling rude words.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said that Mr. Carson quickly positioned himself between the man and his female friend to keep her safe. Kenny also mentioned that Carson was trying to make the situation less intense.
Shortly after, the person being accused stabbed Mr. Carson three times. One of the stabs hit Mr. Carson’s chest and went into his heart, which caused his death.
Mr Carson was laying on the sidewalk, close to death. A man with a knife kicked him in the chest. He also threatened to stab the woman with him and spat in her face, said Mr Kenny.
A woman who we don’t know arrived shortly after and said sorry. She is believed to be the suspect’s girlfriend.
On Wednesday, the police shared a picture of the person they suspect and his girlfriend. They asked the public to help find them.
Local news sources report that the police are not revealing the name of the person they suspect of committing a crime. The suspect is 18 years old and has a past of behaving in a disruptive manner. The police will only make an arrest if they gather enough evidence that strongly suggests the suspect’s guilt.
MrCarson had been living in New York for 13 years. He spent ten years helping to plan campaigns for the New York Public Interest Research Group, a group that focuses on waste policy.
MrCarson also helped make a campaign called “No OD NY” to help more people know about overdose prevention centers.
According to a news source called Gothamist, in 2021, he walked more than 150 miles from New York City to Albany to make people more aware of harm reduction methods and centers.
“He always spoke up and supported others, and his generous nature brought happiness to everyone,” wrote New York Mayor Eric Adams on X (previously called Twitter). “We cannot even imagine someone killing him, and the police will keep working until we make sure the person responsible is punished. ”
Senator Chuck Schumer said that Mr. Carson is a talented and exceptional activist, after they both worked together at a town hall meeting about inflation.
“May we be inspired by his memory and accomplishments,” the Senator wrote on X. -
Sisi of Egypt faces an unexpected electoral challenge
Egyptians are really interested and caught up in the exciting beginning of their country’s presidential election campaign, which started earlier than expected.
President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is almost certain to be re-elected for another six-year term, even though his government is currently dealing with very high inflation rates and a large amount of debt.
The left-wing politician and former MP Ahmed al-Tantawi, who strongly opposes the government, has started an uncommon political campaign in Egypt.
President Sisi hosted a big, three-day conference on TV called “Story of the Homeland” to talk about what happened in the past ten years and officially announce that he is running for office.
Mr Sisi said that he is answering the calls of the Egyptians once again. He has decided to nominate himself for another term as president in order to fulfill their dreams. The audience of officials and important people cheered and applauded in response.
“I am asking all Egyptians to take part in this democratic process and use their love for their country to decide who is deserving,” he said.
At the right moment, many people gathered in different cities in Egypt to show their support.
Many people crowded into a square in Giza and happily waved flags. Many people from nearby poor neighborhoods came because they wanted to attend a party with famous singers. But some people told the BBC that they were government workers who were told to go.
As Egyptian television talk shows, which are very popular but also heavily regulated, talked about these pictures, videos were also shared on social media showing small protests. These protests were particularly noticeable in the small coastal city of Marsa Matrouh, where banners with the president’s image were torn down and destroyed.
A few Arabic hashtags quickly became popular. Not only “Sisi” with requests for a “million man” march to support him, but also “Leave, loser”, which is being shared by thousands of people.
The choice to plan the election for December 10-12, which is much earlier than needed, seems to be connected to Egypt’s serious economic problems. Experts are predicting that another difficult decision will be made next year to reduce the value of the currency.
During a conference this week in Egypt’s new administrative capital, which is an expensive project of Mr. Sisi’s government being constructed in the desert east of Cairo, the president asked regular people to make sacrifices to handle the increasing prices.
“He said, Egyptians should not even think about choosing to eat instead of working hard and making advancements. ” If we have to be hungry and thirsty in order for the country to improve and be successful, then we should choose not to eat or drink. His opponent, Ahmed al-Tantawi, quickly criticized those remarks as being “dangerous” and indicating a “cruel approach”. He stated that Egyptians were being expected to face hunger and a lack of necessities.
He expressed disapproval towards Mr Sisi, saying that Mr Sisi’s idea of progress involves constructing large buildings, cities, and palaces in the desert instead of prioritizing the wellbeing of people by ensuring they have a good life, including access to quality education and healthcare.
We don’t know yet if Mr. Tantawi, who is one of the few people running for president, will participate in the competition.
The internet watchdog CitizenLab in Canada has found that his phone has been attacked with advanced spyware.
He also said that everyday Egyptians have had a hard time registering their support for his candidacy at public notary offices. Some people say that they were assaulted by supporters of the government.
People who want to run for office need either the support of 25,000 signatures from people in 15 different areas, or the support of 20 Members of Parliament who are likely to vote for Mr Sisi.
Egypt’s National Election Authority says it is looking into the complaints and keeping notary offices open for longer.
President Sisi, who used to be a general in the army, led the military’s removal of Mohammed Morsi, who was elected as the president of the country through a democratic process and belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood. This happened in 2013, after Morsi had been in power for one year, following a lot of people protesting on the streets.
He won the presidential elections in both 2014 and 2018 with 97% of the vote. In 2019, the constitution was changed to allow him to stay in power for two more years and run for a third term. People voted and agreed on this change.
Mr Sisi’s time as leader has involved stopping the Muslim Brotherhood completely. They were previously the strongest opposition group in the country, but their leaders are now imprisoned or living outside of Egypt.
Activists say that many people who criticize the government have been put in jail. Most of them are Islamists, but there are also non-religious activists, including many who were involved in the 2011 uprising that removed President Hosni Mubarak from power.
Mr Sisi used to be viewed as someone who would bring stability to Egypt after a long period of trouble, and he was able to show himself as a powerful leader. But, he has become less popular as the country’s economic problems have gotten worse.
Egypt, which relies on importing a lot of wheat, was severely affected by the consequences of the war in Ukraine after struggling with financial difficulties for many years. The value of the currency has decreased three times since the beginning of last year, and it has lost more than half of its value compared to the dollar. In August, prices increased a lot, almost 40%.
The president has been saying in his speeches that this year’s election is an opportunity to start over and make new beginnings. “We are about to start a new government that aims to finish the process of keeping the state alive and reconstruct it based on modern principles and democracy,” he announced.
Many Egyptians know that this election will not bring change, but instead more difficult times. -
Russian naval facility proposed in Abkhazia, Georgia
Russia has decided to build a military base near Abkhazia, a region in Georgia that wants to be independent from Georgia. The leader of Abkhazia told the Russian media about this plan.
Aslan Bzhania told a newspaper called Izvestia that his region, which is supported by Moscow, will soon have a permanent location for Russia on the Black Sea coast.
This happens as Ukraine is attacking Russia’s Black Sea fleet more often. Two weeks ago, Kyiv attacked the fleet’s main base in Crimea.
The Russian government has chosen not to say anything about the reported agreement.
Georgia’s government said that it would be a serious act that goes against Georgia’s authority and land if this were to happen.
Abkhazia is a place in Georgia that is next to Russia. It already has a Russian military area there.
The area was involved in a war with Georgia from 1992-1993 and claimed independence in 1999, although not many countries acknowledge it as an independent nation.
After the war between Georgia and Russia in 2008, Moscow accepted it as a separate country. Georgia accuses Russia of occupying Abkhazia.
Mr Bzhania said the new naval base in the Ochamchire district would increase Russia and Abkhazia’s ability to defend themselves and protect their important interests. “He told Izvestia that security is the most important thing. ”
He saw Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin earlier this week and showed he backs Moscow’s conflict in Ukraine.
The UK defence ministry has suggested that Russia’s Black Sea fleet is moving towards the eastern region due to increased attacks from Ukraine in occupied Crimea.
Satellite pictures show that 17 Russian ships have moved from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk.
The alleged new Abkhazia base is located 500km (300 miles) to the southeast of Novorossiysk, near the Black Sea coast.
Russian presidential spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, ignored questions about ship deployments and told reporters to ask the defense ministry instead.
The Black Sea fleet in Moscow is considered the most important unit in their navy. The ships shot missiles at Ukraine, which resulted in serious damage.
Kyiv sees the fleet as an important target, so they attacked its headquarters in Crimea in late September. They claimed to have killed 34 Russian officers. -
Kenyan MPs demand ban on brand of nicotine pouches
Kenyan lawmakers want the government to stop selling a type of nicotine pouches that are popular in the country.
Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha said in parliament that Velo is a new name for a nicotine product made by British American Tobacco (BAT). The product used to be called Lyft, but it was declared illegal in 2022 by the previous Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe.
Mr Kagwe decided to remove Lyft from its registered status because there were allegations that it obtained its license and registration unlawfully.
There are no nicotine pouches made in our country, so we have to import all of them. Miss Nakhumicha said this.
The BBC has reached out to BAT for a comment, but they have not received a response.
Health experts say Kenya is seeing a comeback of really addictive nicotine products that were banned by the Ministry of Health.
The Kenya Tobacco Control and Health Promotion Alliance, which is a group from society, stated that stopping the sale of nicotine pouches would save a whole generation from dying, getting sick, or being disabled.
Kenya uses a law from 2007 to help make decisions about tobacco products.
The person in charge of health said a group of experts will examine the rule and give more suggestions. -
Three people killed in building collapse in Havana’s historic district
At least three people died when a residential building in Havana, Cuba, collapsed.
The building collapsed on Tuesday night and the rescue team found the body of a 79-year-old resident on Wednesday afternoon.
The two other people who got hurt were rescue workers. They were looking for people in the building when it collapsed again.
Havana has a lot of old houses that are in very bad condition and may be unsafe.
The housing minister of Cuba recently said that 850,000 homes on the island need to be fixed.
Old Havana is a favorite spot for tourists who take pictures of its old houses that used to be grand but are now falling apart.
However, for the people living there, not having enough appropriate housing results in many families being forced to live in buildings that are about to fall apart.
The government says that it cannot get building materials to do repairs because the United States has put an economic punishment on the island.
It said it would start a countrywide project to construct new buildings in 2018, but people who disagree with this claim that it focused more on building hotels to bring in tourists and make money instead of providing homes for the people who live there.
The recent building collapse in Havana is part of a series of accidents that have happened to the city’s homes. -
10,000 teachers to relocate to UK this year — Dr Addai-Poku
The Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr. Christian Addai-Poku has expressed grave concern about the high attrition rate of teachers, emphasizing that it poses a significant threat to the future of Ghana’s education sector.
He cited an example of the attrition rate, noting that earlier in the year, over 16,000 Ghanaian teachers had applied for employment with the Department of Education in the United Kingdom (UK). By June 13, approximately 10,000 of these applicants, who possessed Ghana Teacher Licences, had been certified to work in the UK. The UK government had offered them placements without further assessment for qualified teacher status tests.
Dr. Addai-Poku made this appeal during a two-day symposium in Takoradi, where he called upon the government and all relevant stakeholders to implement appropriate measures to address this situation and avert the impending danger it poses to the education sector.
The symposium took place ahead of this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony, scheduled to occur today in the Western regional capital.
During the symposium, education practitioners, academics, and policymakers convened to discuss significant issues in the education sector. It served as a significant platform for various agencies to engage with participants on crucial policy matters and provided an opportunity for schools to showcase innovative initiatives from their institutions.
Additionally, the symposium offered a platform for the shortlisted award winners to present the unique contributions and practices that earned them national recognition. It also delved into the theme of this year’s World Teachers Day celebration, fostering a deeper understanding of its significance.
Dr. Addai-Poku emphasized that despite the country producing a significant number of qualified teachers annually, the high attrition rate reverses the progress, resulting in a shortage of teachers every year across the nation.
He commended all stakeholders in the education sector for their dedication and efforts in striving for the best education for the nation’s future leaders.
Furthermore, the Registrar of the NTC pledged to collaborate with both local and international agencies willing to partner with them. Their goal is to enhance the training and professionalism of Ghanaian teachers, enabling them to contribute their best to the transformation of the nation’s economy. This collaborative effort aims to address the challenges posed by the high attrition rate in the teaching profession and ensure a sustainable supply of qualified teachers for Ghana’s education system.
The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET, Gifty Twum Ampofo, stated that the theme for this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize: “The teachers we need for the education we want:
The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage”, was apt and touched on the spine of the crisis at hand. She said when examined, it would shed light on its multifaceted dimensions while advocating a comprehensive solution.
Mrs. Gifty Twum Ampofo emphasized the critical role of teachers in the current educational landscape, noting that their importance has never been greater. She highlighted the rapidly advancing world’s need for knowledge acquisition, which requires constant verification and authentication of information before learners can consume it.
The Deputy Minister stressed that teachers are not just conveyors of information but are, in fact, the architects of the collective future. They play a crucial role in shaping the minds of younger generations, fostering critical thinking skills, and instilling values and attitudes that transcend across generations. This recognition underscores the significance of teachers in molding the future of the nation and ensuring a well-informed, capable, and ethical citizenry.
“Let’s join the National Teaching Council and the Ministry of Education in this exploration to deal with the teacher shortage, acknowledging the fact that reversing the teacher shortage is a long-term endeavour that requires collaboration between governments, educational institutions, civil society and private sector,” Ms Twum Ampofo said.
Professor Andy Ofori-Birikorang, a former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, emphasized the indispensable role of teachers in the nation’s development agenda. He underscored that the importance of teachers cannot be underestimated, as they are responsible for the health, harmony, and prosperity of society. He described teachers as the architects and engineers of the societal future.
Furthermore, Prof. Ofori-Birikorang highlighted that teachers play a vital role in shaping the upbringing of children and adults. They provide guidance in understanding the socio-cultural and moral compass of society, thereby laying the foundation for a progressive and prosperous society. This recognition underscores the immense impact teachers have on shaping the values and future of a nation.

Mauritius court declares gay sex legal
The top court of Mauritius has changed the law to make gay sex legal. They said that the previous ban was based on old rules from when Mauritius was a colony, and not on the country’s own beliefs and customs.
British colonialists made it illegal to engage in “sodomy” in 1898, but authorities have not been enforcing this law in recent times.
The man who likes other men and took the matter to court said he can now love whomever he wants without being scared.
This decision is made when there is more hate towards gay people and stricter laws against them in some African countries.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni signed a law in May that is against homosexuals. This law says that people who have sex with children or rape someone will be punished with death.
Many people in Uganda and other African countries believe that homosexuality is not a part of their African culture and goes against their religious beliefs.
This case in Mauritius was brought by Abdool Ridwan Firaas Ah Seek. He argued that the law against same-sex relationships violated his basic rights, such as the right to freedom.
The highest court in Mauritius said that the law was not based on the beliefs and customs of the indigenous people of Mauritius, but was instead passed down from British colonial rule.
The judges said that the decision to implement this was not based on what the people wanted, but was forced upon Mauritius and other colonies by the British government.
This decision means that individuals cannot be arrested for engaging in gay sex anymore, but the law still needs to be officially removed by the parliament in order to make it legally accepted.
In legal documents, the state said it wasn’t being unkind to the LGBT community, but the laws can only be changed by parliament when society is ready for it.
Mauritius became independent in 1968, but continued to prohibit gay sex.
Religious groups are strongly against getting rid of it.
Abdool Ridwan Firaas Ah Seek stated that the decision would allow upcoming generations in Mauritius to comfortably and openly accept their sexuality without the worry of being taken into custody.
The Human Dignity Trust (HDT) stated that it brings an end to over a hundred years of discrimination against LGBT individuals in Mauritius.
The ruling told African countries that still make same-sex relationships illegal to get rid of these laws.
In Mauritius, the law says that having gay sex can lead to being put in jail for up to five years. However, the HDT says that this law is mostly not followed anymore.
There are 64 countries around the world where being gay is against the law, and almost half of them are in Africa. -
More than 1,350 lines of investigation regarding Creeslough blast
The Irish police, known as Gardaí, are investigating an explosion at a service station in County Donegal. They have started looking into more than 1,350 leads to find out what happened. Unfortunately, 10 people lost their lives in the incident.
Over 900 statements have been collected since the explosion in Creeslough on October 7, 2022.
The people who were hurt were from the village or nearby places. There were four men, three women, two teenagers, and a five-year-old girl.
As the one-year mark since the tragedy is getting closer, we still don’t know what caused it, and the police are still investigating.
The investigation is being managed from the Garda station in Milford.
Gardaí said in a statement on Thursday that they are working hard and quickly to professionally investigate all the details of this deadly explosion.
A special team with a police officer is still helping and supporting each of the families who have lost a loved one.
The police said that they were getting help from an organization called the Health and Safety Authority, another organization called the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, and a company from Norway called Det Norske Veritas (DNV), which is good at looking into and testing energy systems. -
Tanzania encourages online banking before El Nio
Banks in Tanzania are telling their customers to use electronic payments and online banking more to avoid any problems in the rainy season caused by heavy rains due to El Niño.
This is a natural weather event that happens every two to seven years and affects weather all over the world.

Over 16,000 Ghanaian teachers applied to UK’S Department of Education for employment – NTC
The Registrar of the National Teaching Council, Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, has raised concerns about the high attrition rate in Ghana’s education sector.
He emphasized that this trend poses a significant threat to the future of the country’s education and overall development.
He raised these concerns while delivering a welcome address during the first day of a two-day symposium that preceded this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize at Takoradi in the Western Region.
Dr. Addai-Poku disclosed a little over 16,000 Ghanaian teachers applied to the Department of Education in the UK for employment.
The symposium served as a gathering point for education practitioners, academics, and policymakers to engage in discussions on pertinent issues in the education sector. It provided a significant platform for various agencies to interact with participants on crucial policy matters and offered schools an opportunity to showcase innovations emerging from their institutions.
Furthermore, the symposium facilitated discussions related to the theme of the year’s World Teachers Day celebration and allowed the shortlisted award winners to demonstrate what set them apart and led to their national recognition.
The Registrar highlighted that despite the country producing a substantial number of qualified teachers annually, the persistently high attrition rate results in an ongoing shortage of teachers across the nation.
According to him 10,000 applicants with Ghana Teacher Licenses have been certified to work in the UK without any further assessment (qualified teacher status test) by the UK government on June 13, 2023.
As a result of this, Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, made an appeal to the government and all relevant stakeholders to implement appropriate measures to address the high attrition rate in the education sector. This call to action is aimed at averting the imminent danger posed by this ongoing trend.
Meanwhile, Dr Addai-Poku commended all stakeholders in the education sector for their efforts towards attaining the best education for future leaders of the country.
In his speech, he promised to partner with local and international agencies to shape the training, professionalism, and efforts of Ghanaian teachers in order to transform the nation’s economy for the better.
The Deputy Minister of Education responsible for the TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) sector, Mrs. Gifty Twum Ampofo also emphasized that this year’s theme for the Ghana Teacher Prize day, “The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage,” precisely addresses the current crisis in education.
She noted that a thorough examination of this theme would help uncover its multifaceted
dimensions and advocate for a comprehensive solution.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that teachers play a crucial role beyond being conveyors of information. They are the architects of the collective future, shaping young minds, fostering critical thinking, and imparting values and attitudes that endure for generations.
Mrs. Twum Ampofo also called for collaboration among the National Teaching Council, the Ministry of Education, governments, educational institutions, civil society, and the private sector to address the teacher shortage.
She acknowledged that reversing this shortage is a long-term endeavor that requires collective effort.
Former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Education,Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang,
emphasized that the role of teachers in the nation’s development agenda cannot be underestimated.
He highlighted that teachers are responsible for the health, harmony, and prosperity of society.

Jubilation as monarch of Uganda arrives home after seven years
A leader of an Ugandan tribe has come back to his home and received a warm welcome, seven years after many people were killed when the police attacked his palace.
Happy people gathered along the roads of Kasese to welcome Charles Wesley Mumbere, the king of Rwenzururu.
In 2016, he was accused of leading a group of armed people from his home in order to separate and form a new country.
The Ugandan government claims that slightly more than 100 people died during the police operation, but human rights organizations argue that the actual number of deaths is much higher.
King Mumbere and many other people were accused of serious crimes like treason, murder, and terrorism. But the prosecutors decided to not continue with the case when they requested amnesty.
The Rwenzururu kingdom is made up of Bakonzo people. They have a past of wanting to separate from Uganda and have had ongoing tensions with the government. -
Guernsey plans to continue French day-tripper programme
A plan to continue a program that allows French people to visit Guernsey for a day using their national ID cards instead of a passport will be implemented next year.
This plan was started earlier this year, and the ferry company believes it has helped bring more visitors this summer.
The agreement was supposed to end in September, but the French and island authorities want to extend it until the end of 2024.
The Committee for Home Affairs wants to make sure French people have as many chances as possible to travel before the new UK travel system starts in 2024.
When the UK starts using the ETA scheme, French citizens will need to have a passport to enter the Common Travel Area.
Deputy Rob Prow, who is in charge of the Committee for Home Affairs, stated that because the pilot program during the summer was successful, they want to extend it for another year.
We want to create a similar addition, but we need to talk more with the UK.
“We will give you new information as soon as we can. ”
The day-tripper scheme is only for trips that go directly from Normandy or Brittany to St Peter Port Harbour in Guernsey or Braye Harbour in Alderney.
Travelers can visit the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but they have to come back on the same day’s boat ride. -

Floods in India have left 102 persons missing
Authorities in India are in a hurry to save people who are missing after sudden floods in the state of Sikkim. The floods have caused 102 people to go missing, including 22 army members.
Fourteen people have died because of a big flood caused by a lake in the Himalayas overflowing.
Officials said that there were more than 3,000 tourists who couldn’t leave different areas of the state.
Many people who look for and save others have been sent all over the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday and promised to support him in every possible way.
The Lhonak lake in the state had its barrier broken on Tuesday night because of a lot of rain. This caused the water level in the Teesta river in Lachen Valley to increase rapidly.
The flood got worse because water was let out from a dam close to the river. A person from the military said that the water levels suddenly went up by 15-20 feet in the area further down the stream.
Around 14 individuals were stuck in the tunnels of the dam, according to a government representative.
Pictures taken from space by Isro, India’s space agency, displayed major differences in the size of the lake. On September 28th, the lake covered an area of 167. 4 hectares, but by October 4th, it had decreased to 60. 3
The Indian army is searching very hard to find and save people who are missing. Officials said that a soldier was saved on Wednesday night and is doing well.
Rescue workers have also recovered bodies, including that of a child, from the flood area of the Teesta river in Singtam, according to officials from the PTI news agency.
The search operations are happening during heavy rain and fast-moving water in the Teesta River. Many roads and bridges have been washed away.
The floods in Sikkim have caused a lot of damage to things like roads and bridges, according to the chief secretary VB Pathak.
Cell phone service in the northern areas of the state has also been interrupted.
The army has created three phone lines to help families of missing individuals, including their own soldiers.
“Family members of the people who are missing have been reached out to and told about what’s happening,” the message stated.
The northern areas of the nearby West Bengal state are also facing problems because water from the Teesta River has flooded the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri.
On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, said that the government saved and relocated 10,000 individuals to 190 shelter camps.
Flooding and other natural disasters happen often in Sikkim, which is located in the Himalayas. Last year, a lot of rain caused very bad floods in that place. This made tens of thousands of people have to leave their homes and sadly, at least 24 people died. -
Tinubu’s university transcript is authentic – Aide
A staff member of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has said that the claim of Mr Tinubu using a fake university diploma for the country’s electoral body is not true.
At a meeting on Tuesday, a person from Chicago State University (CSU) stated that Mr. Tinubu finished his studies at the university in 1979.
But the official also said that the university cannot confirm if Mr. Tinubu’s diploma is real because they don’t keep copies of student diplomas.
He also said that the signature, logo, and seal on Mr Tinubu’s certificate that he showed to Inec were different from those on the other certificates given out by the CSU when Mr Tinubu graduated.
Atiku Abubakar asked a court in the United States to make CSU give out Mr Tinubu’s school records. Mr Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar both ran for president in Nigeria’s February elections.
He planned to use the documents as evidence to show that Mr. Tinubu’s election should be cancelled because he supposedly gave Inec fake university documents.
Temitope Ajayi, who works for Mr Tinubu as his media and publicity assistant, said on Wednesday that the accusation that President Tinubu gave Inec a fake certificate doesn’t make sense because Mr Tinubu already has a genuine university certificate.
He also mentioned that the new certificate Mr. Tinubu showed to Inec was legitimate because the CSU official verified that “the university does not issue replacements for lost certificates, vendors do. ” -
Bobi Wine detained after his return from Uganda
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was taken and kept in his home against his will by some aggressive individuals when he came back from another country.
The singer who became a politician is the most powerful competitor against President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in office for nearly 40 years.
He has been caught by the police many times and has been accused of doing things that could harm his country.
The police said that they did not arrest Wine. Instead, they helped him go back home.
Wine, who used to be a famous singer and is actually named Robert Kyagulanyi, tried to become president in 2021 but did not succeed. He competed against President Museveni, who is 79 years old, in a very tense election.
During the election campaign, the government strongly suppressed the opposition, and there were at least 54 deaths in protests against the government.
Wine explained that once he arrived at Entebbe International Airport, some bad people forcefully took hold of him, pulled him, hurt his hands, and forced him into a private car that was ready and waiting for him.
Later, he mentioned from his house that he was not allowed to leave.
A video shared by Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) on X, previously called Twitter, displayed the leader being taken away after getting off a plane in Entebbe. One of his friends was recorded asking, “Where are you bringing him. ”
The scared government has taken our President into custody when he arrived at Entebbe Airport. “We were supposed to meet him today, but the overly anxious government security wouldn’t even let him go through immigration,” said Mathias Mpuuga, the leader of NUP in parliament.
Many people who support Wine were very excited for his return. They see him as a symbol of change in a country that has been ruled by the same person for many years.
Recently, the police said they would stop the National Unity Platform, led by Wine, from organizing rallies in the whole country due to concerns about public safety.
Ugandan soldiers and other security forces were sent to roads near Entebbe airport and also outside the offices of Win’s party, NUP, and in the central business district of Kampala early on Thursday morning.
The police told the organizers to not have the planned event and for people to not attend it. A police spokesperson called it an “illegal act”.
Mr Onyango said that security agencies went with Wine to his home in Magere, Kasangati.
Ugandan authorities often arrest opposition leaders to stop them from organizing large protests. They detain them for a few hours and then let them go back home.
