American officials have found strong evidence that a man from the US who went missing in Syria seven years ago has passed away, according to his daughter.
Maryam Kamalmaz talked to The Associated Press and said that she met with eight important American officials in Washington. They gave her a lot of information about her father, Majd, who is a therapist from Texas and is believed to be dead.
The officials said they were very confident about her father’s death. She asked if other detained Americans had been rescued in similar situations, and they said no.
“What else do I need. A lot of important people confirmed to us that he’s really gone. ” Maryam Kamalmaz said there was no way to avoid the truth.
She said the officials told her that they think her father died many years ago, at the beginning of his time in captivity. In 2020, she was told by officials that they thought he died from a heart problem in 2017, but the family still had hope and US officials kept looking for him.
She said that they didn’t confirm how trustworthy the information is until this meeting and the different levels of checking it had to go through.
She did not explain what she learned about being smart.
Representatives from the White House and the FBI, who look into kidnappings in other countries, did not respond right away to requests for comments on Saturday.
Majd Kamalmaz went missing in February 2017, when he was 59 years old, while he was traveling in Syria to see an old family member. The FBI said that he was stopped at a checkpoint in Syria and nobody has heard from him since.
Kamalmaz and other Americans have gone missing in Syria. One of them is Austin Tice, a journalist who disappeared in 2012 at a checkpoint near Damascus. Syria says they are not keeping any Americans as prisoners.

US doctors stranded in Gaza demand assistance from US government to get home
Dr Ahlia Kattan should be home in California with her three kids now. Instead, she is spending all her time at Gaza’s European Hospital on the outskirts of Rafah.
Kattan is a doctor who specializes in helping people who are very sick and need special care. He is one of at least 22 American doctors who are stuck in Gaza because the Israeli military closed the border to Egypt. Rafah was the only way for foreign aid workers to go in and out of Gaza.
My kids have been texting me today saying that you said you would be home on Tuesday, Kattan told the media. The WHO is working to find a safe way for us to leave. It’s not going to happen.
The crossing is not open because the army took control of it last week. Israeli and Egyptian officials have not been able to agree on reopening it. They are blaming each other for keeping it closed. At the moment, many foreign doctors are trapped in Gaza, and others can’t get in because the situation in the area is getting worse for people needing help.
FAJR Scientific, a non-profit organization in the United States, brought Kattan and 16 other doctors to Gaza. Now, they are asking the US government to help the team safely leave Gaza. They were supposed to leave on Monday.
“I am asking the US government to work together with the WHO to bring home US citizens who are stuck in a war zone as soon as possible,” said Mosab Nasser, the leader of the organization, who is also in Gaza.
At least one person on the team needs to be taken out for medical reasons, he said. 17 medics, such as 12 Americans, 3 people from the UK, 1 from Oman, and 1 from Egypt.
Kattan and her husband, who is a doctor, came to Gaza over two weeks ago because they saw the people suffering on TV and wanted to help.
We knew that people needed doctors to put them to sleep for surgery, especially women and children. “We knew we had something valuable to offer,” said Kattan.
The FAJR Scientific team made videos about their experiences and the conditions they face in the European Hospital. They only shared these videos with the media.
In a video, Laura Swoboda, a nurse who is an expert in treating wounds, talks about hearing the sound of drones flying above. “Some people think we are safe, but war is still happening. There is always a possibility that violence could start again,” she said.
The hospital is not the only place where you can find dangerous conditions.
We didn’t know how bad things were here. We couldn’t use soap to clean our hands before dealing with wounds that had maggots. Swoboda said they didn’t have sanitizer wipes to clean the tables after each patient.
Many people kept coming in one after another. We don’t have any more gauze to clean the cuts and scrapes. We don’t have any advanced dressings left, and we used up all of our cleaners. We are using whatever we can find right now.

Before a surgery to fix the amputations of someone who lost all four limbs, Kattan talks about the lack of pain relief medicine. She picked up a bottle of Propofol and said the medics brought it with them from the US.

The volunteers on the FAJR Scientific mission knew it was risky to travel to a war zone, but they never thought they would get stuck in Gaza.
Now, she is struggling because she wants to go back home to her kids, but she also feels guilty for wanting to leave Gaza while the Israeli military might attack more and there might be a higher demand for medical help.
I miss my kids and waking up in the morning and realizing they are not next to me. The tough part is knowing that I will get to leave at some point. I get to go home and feel safe. “I know my kids are safe,” she said.
I have made a lot of friends here who are the same age as me and have kids my age. They don’t have things like security and basic needs.
After watching the hospital in southern Gaza struggle for over two weeks, Kattan said that she and her coworkers just want to leave Gaza if other doctors can take their place.
We are parents who want to be at home with our families, and children, we are doctors here, and we have friends and we can’t leave them. -
US military begins using floating pier to transport aid to Gaza
Trucks bringing help to Gaza are now coming ashore after arriving through a pier made by the US military. This information comes from the US Central Command.
On Thursday, a pier was built on a beach in Gaza. It will help bring aid from different countries to the area, where most border crossings are closed and a severe humanitarian crisis is happening.
According to CENTCOM, no US soldiers went on land in Gaza.
We want to bring 500 tons of help to Gaza every day through the pier, according to Adm. Brad Cooper is the leader of CENTCOM. This means they want to send about 90 trucks full of help every day, and they hope to increase it to 150 trucks a day.
A ship will bring aid to the pier on Friday. A UN official told the media that it’s not clear if they have started unloading the aid yet. The help will go to the top part of Gaza one day and to the bottom part on the next.

South Korea’s military said the missile launches are a clear threat to peace in the area. South Korea will be ready to defend against any attacks from North Korea, with help from the United States.
North Korea has been testing more weapons recently to make its weapons stronger and more up-to-date. Talks with the United States and South Korea have not been successful. Call had worked for the presidential campaigns of Biden and Vice President Harris. He was also an activist for Israel before joining the government.

Pro-Palestinian protests: Over 2,300 individuals are detained on US campuses
The police directed individuals showing support for Palestine to leave a tent camp at New York University on Friday morning.This happened after many protests and clashes with the police at other colleges, which led to over 2,300 people getting arrested.

Israel started attacking Gaza after October 7th because Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly innocent people, and also took about 250 hostages in an attack on southern Israel.
Late on Tuesday, the police arrested over 100 people when they removed the Columbia encampment. One police officer accidentally fired his gun inside Hamilton Hall, but no one got hurt, the NYPD said on Thursday. The man was trying to use the flashlight on his gun but accidentally shot the wall with one bullet, said the police.
More than 200 people got arrested at the University of California, Los Angeles on Thursday. The protesters didn’t leave even after being told to, and some of them made human chains. The police used flash-bangs to scatter the crowds. The police broke through a strong barricade made of wood, metal, and dumpsters at a camp, and then took down the tents and canopies.
UCLA leader Gene Block said they tried to find a peaceful solution, but the situation changed when people who disagreed with the pro-Palestinian group attacked them. Before that, everything was calm on campus.
The campus leaders and police did not take action or ask for help for a long time. No one was taken to jail that night, but at least 15 people protesting were hurt.

Protests and people getting arrested have happened all over the country. But in the last day, a lot of people were watching what happened at the University of California, Los Angeles. There were chaotic scenes when officers in riot gear pushed against a crowd of demonstrators on Thursday.
The protests at colleges across the country started at Columbia on April 17 to show opposition to Israel’s attack in Gaza after Hamas attacked southern Israel on Oct 7. Terrorists killed 1,200 people, most of them were innocent civilians, and they also took about 250 people as hostages. Israel has promised to eliminate Hamas and has caused the deaths of over 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as reported by the Health Ministry in that area.
Police took pro-Palestinian protesters to jail on college campuses all over the country last night. There was a lot of chaos at the University of California, Los Angeles when police in riot gear pushed against a crowd of protesters.
The police took down barriers and started taking apart the demonstrators’ strong camp at UCLA. This happened after many protesters refused to leave, and some of them linked arms to try to stop the police. The police used loud, bright bangs to scatter the crowds.
Sgt Alejandro Rubio of the California Highway Patrol said that 132 people were arrested at UCLA. Rubio said the people who were arrested are being taken to the county jails complex in downtown Los Angeles for processing. The UCLA police will decide if they need to press charges or not.
On Thursday morning, workers went to the old campsite and started cleaning up a lot. Bulldozers picked up trash bags and took down tents. Some buildings had paint on them that was not nice.
The police arrested people after using loudspeakers to tell them to leave for many hours. More than 1,000 people were on campus, some were inside a tent area that was barricaded. People who were protesting and the police pushed and fought with each other when the officers faced opposition. Video showed police taking off helmets and goggles from protesters as they were arrested.The police helicopters were flying around and there were loud bangs that make bright lights and loud noises to shock and disorient people. The protesters yelled at the police, asking them where they were the previous night. On Tuesday night, another group attacked the camp, and it took the UCLA administration and campus police a long time to come and help.
Protesters are setting up tents on college campuses to ask universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies that support the war in Gaza. This is a big student movement happening at campuses all over the country. The recent police crackdowns were similar to actions taken years ago against a bigger protest against the Vietnam War.

Authorities at Stony Brook University in New York on Long Island reported that 29 people were taken into custody early Thursday morning. This included students, faculty, and others who were not part of the university community. Fordham University in New York City also confirmed that 15 people were arrested after causing trouble in the lobby of a building on their campus at Lincoln Center.
The police arrested 15 people for trespassing at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus after a large group forced their way into the Lowenstein building.
Seventeen people got arrested on Wednesday at the University of Texas at Dallas for not obeying orders to move an encampment from the main walkway. They were charged with criminal trespass. A university spokeswoman announced this in a statement on Thursday.
The police at Yale University arrested four people, two of whom were students, on Wednesday night. This happened after about 200 protesters walked to the president’s house and the campus police department, according to school officials. The school said that the protesters did not listen to warnings and were not allowed to be on campus without permission.
The protest group Occupy Yale said that campus police were aggressive during the arrests and did not give any warnings. The team put a video on Instagram that shows police officers holding one person down on the ground and another person against the sidewalk.

The police in Oregon started to remove pro-Palestinian rights protesters from the Millar Library at Portland State University, where they have been staying since Monday.
They used spray paint to draw on the walls and moved furniture to block off areas. Portland State University said on social media that the campus will stay closed because of police activity.
Ann Cudd, who is the president of the university, said on Wednesday that around 50 people left the library after they were told they wouldn’t get in trouble if they left quietly. But there are still some people, including those who don’t go to the university, who stayed behind. The police in Portland said on Thursday that 15 of their cars were set on fire during the night. It’s not clear if this was connected to the protest.
The University of Minnesota officials have made a deal with the protesters to stop camping on the Minneapolis campus. Temporary President Jeff Ettinger sent an email to the students on Thursday, saying that the people protesting have agreed not to cause any trouble during the final exams or graduation ceremonies. That happened when Northwestern University in suburban Chicago and Brown University in Rhode Island made similar agreements.
Meanwhile, the head of Florida’s state universities has told the leaders of the campuses to do whatever they can to keep the graduation ceremonies from being disturbed. This includes big schools like the University of Florida and Florida State University.
Protests also started happening outside of colleges. On Thursday in Albuquerque, around twenty-four protesters sat in the middle of a road, stopping people from getting to the main gate at Kirtland Air Force Base. The group showed flags and promised to “close everything” because of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The protests at UCLA seemed to be getting a lot of notice. Iranian TV showed police working and so did Al Jazeera from Qatar. Live pictures of Los Angeles were also shown on Israeli TV.
President Joe Biden said it’s okay for students to protest peacefully, but he doesn’t like the chaos of the past few days.
Israel called the protests against them antisemitic, but people who criticize Israel say they are just using that as a way to stop people from speaking out against them. Some people at the protests said things that are mean to Jewish people or threatened violence, but the organizers say it’s a peaceful movement to support Palestinian rights and oppose the war.
Hundreds of California Highway Patrol officers went to UCLA campus early on Thursday. They wore face shields and protective vests, and held their batons out to keep the demonstrators, who wore helmets and gas masks, away. The demonstrators were chanting: “You want peace. ” We want fairness.

US Army Major nabbed for smuggling guns into Ghana, faces 20-year jail term
A Ghanaian living in the US as an army officer, Kojo Owusu Dartey, has been found guilty of multiple charges, including smuggling goods from the United States, unauthorized dealing in firearms, delivery of firearms without proper notice, illegal exportation of firearms, providing false statements to a U.S. agency, making deceptive declarations in court, and engaging in conspiracy.
Dartey faces a maximum penalty of 240 months when sentenced on July 23, 2024.
Court documents and evidence provided by the United States Attorney’s Office reveal that between June 28 and July 2, 2021, Dartey acquired seven firearms in the Fort Liberty region.
Furthermore, he enlisted the help of a U.S. Army Staff Sergeant stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to procure three firearms and forward them to him in North Carolina.
Dartey is said to have hidden the firearms, including multiple handguns, an AR15, 50-round magazines, suppressors, and a combat shotgun, inside blue barrels underneath rice and household goods.
These barrels were smuggled out of the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, on a container ship destined for Ghana. The Ghana Revenue Authority seized the firearms and reported the seizure to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division.
Michael Easley, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, made the announcement after Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II accepted the verdict. The ATF, Army Criminal Investigation Division and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Export Enforcement investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel J. Diaz prosecuted it with technical assistance from David Ryan, DOJ Counterintelligence and Export Control Section.
“We are partnering with law enforcement agencies across the globe to expose international criminals – from money launderers to rogue international arms traffickers capable of fueling violence abroad,” said U.S Attorney Michael Easley.
“Through a partnership with Ghanaian officials, this rogue Army Major was convicted at trial after smuggling guns to Ghana in blue barrels of rice and household goods. Five Israeli security forces violated human rights prior to Gaza War – US
The US government has found that five Israeli security groups did very wrong things to people before the war with Hamas in Gaza started. They are thinking about stopping giving weapons and help to one of the groups because of this.
The other four have fixed these violations, said Vedant Patel, who works for the State Department. He did not say how they fixed the problems.
The US hasn’t made a decision yet about giving military help to the last group, which is said to be the ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda battalion. The battalion was involved in the death of a Palestinian American man in January 2022.
“We are talking with the Israeli government. ” They have given more information about that unit, and we are still talking about it, Patel said.
Patel mentioned that all these events happened before October 7 and none of them happened in Gaza.
A person who knows about the situation said that the Israelis have recently told the US about things they did that they hadn’t mentioned before. The US is looking at these actions to decide if they are enough to stop cutting aid.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and said that three units are from the Israel Defense Forces and two are civilian units. He also said that the abuses happened in the West Bank.

Patel said on Monday that he doesn’t believe Israel is getting special treatment by being given more time to provide information before facing punishment.
“I didn’t say anything that goes against the Leahy process,” he said.
According to the Leahy Law, the US cannot help foreign security units that are involved in human rights abuses. However, they can resume assistance if the Secretary of State confirms that the country’s government is taking action to hold the guilty members of the security forces accountable.
Blinken wrote a letter to Johnson saying that one of the IDF units has not fixed their problems yet.
“The Israeli government recognized that this unit did not follow the rules of the IDF. As a result, they were moved from the West Bank to the Golan Heights in 2022,” Blinken wrote, without saying which unit it was.
In 2022, the Netzah Yehuda battalion moved from the West Bank to the Golan Heights. In January 2022, the leader of the group got in trouble because a 78-year-old person, Omar Assad, who was Palestinian American, died of a heart problem after being arrested and tied up. This information comes from the IDF. No soldiers were charged with a crime for Assad’s death.
Blinken wrote in the letter that the Israeli government has given new information about the unit’s status and they will work to find a way to fix the problem.

Putin didn’t order Navalny’s killing – US intel suggests

Last month, Putin described Navalny’s death as “sad” and stated he had been willing to exchange the jailed politician with the West, on the condition that Navalny never returned to Russia. Navalny’s allies claim negotiations toward such an exchange were in progress.
The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, stated that U.S. intelligence agencies had concluded that Putin probably did not order Navalny’s killing in February.
However, Washington has not absolved Putin of overall responsibility for Navalny’s death, given that the opposition politician had been a target of Russian authorities for years, was imprisoned on charges deemed politically motivated by the West, and had been poisoned with a nerve agent in 2020.
The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any state involvement in the 2020 poisoning incident.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday he had seen the Journal’s report, which he said contained “empty speculation”.
“I’ve seen the material, I wouldn’t say it’s high quality material that deserves attention,” Peskov told reporters when asked about the matter.

US decides not to punish Israeli military forces for alleged abuses of human rights in West Bank
The Biden government found that three groups of soldiers in Israel did really bad things to Palestinian people in the West Bank. But, they will still get money from the US for their military, because Israel is trying to fix the problem.
The evaluation from the government hasn’t been shared with the public yet. It could change if Israel doesn’t do what it’s asked to do. The details were explained in a letter from Secretary of State Antony Blinken to House Speaker Mike Johnson. The media got hold of the letter, but it didn’t have a date on it.
The US will make sure Israel gets all the aid Congress promised without any delays, Blinken wrote.
The claims about each group happened before the war on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel. None of the situations involve attacks on Hamas in Gaza, Iran, or its supporters.
However, some people who criticize the Biden administration may not be happy with the decision because they think Israel is not being punished enough for their military actions in Gaza. These actions have caused a lot of suffering for the civilian population.
Issa Amro, a well-known person who helps people in Palestine and lives in the West Bank city of Hebron, said he felt let down by the US decision, but he wasn’t surprised.
He said that the US is not taking clear steps to reduce violence and make peace between Palestinians and Israelis.

The Netzah Yehuda battalion is made for very religious Jewish men.
“The Israeli government has shared new information about the unit’s status, and we will work to find a way to fix any problems with the unit,” Blinken said.
“But this won’t change our help for Israel to protect itself from groups like Hamas, Iran, Hezbollah, and other dangers,” he told Johnson, who strongly supports Israel and helped pass a foreign aid bill in Congress this week.
Blinken said that no other groups broke the Leahy Law.
The secretary talked with important Israeli leaders this week after hearing about plans to punish Israeli military units from reports by Axios and ProPublica.

Numerous deaths in US show dangers of giving sedative injections to those police arrest
Demetrio Jackson really needed medical help and the paramedics came to assist him.
The 43-year-old man was caught by the police and arrested for trespassing in a parking lot in Wisconsin. The police used a Taser on him and held him down while he begged for help because he couldn’t breathe. Now he sat on the ground with his hands tied behind his back and breathed in air through a mask.
Next, the police moved Jackson onto his side so that a medic could give him a strong drug to make him fall asleep.
“A police officer told Jackson that it will help him relax. ” In just a few minutes, Jackson’s heart stopped beating. He never woke up and died two weeks after.
Jackson died in 2021 because of something not many people know about – sometimes, instead of shooting, the police use a medical syringe to cause harm.
For the past 15 years, police have been giving calming drugs to people they detain. The drugs are based on uncertain science and are supported by experts who are aligned with the police. This is happening all over the country. The investigation looked at lots of police and medical records and videos of many incidents. It found that a plan to stop violence and save lives has led to some deaths that could have been prevented.
Between 2012 and 2021, at least 94 people died after being given medicine to make them sleepy and held down by police. This information was found by the AP working with FRONTLINE (PBS) and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism. This is almost 10% of the over 1,000 deaths found during the investigation of people controlled by police in ways that are not supposed to cause death. Almost half of the 94 people who died were Black, including Jackson.

US Senate overwhelmingly approves Ukraine’s aid

The Senate approved the bill with a vote of 79-18 on Tuesday, after the House had already agreed to it on Saturday. Biden worked with other government leaders to get their support. He will sign the law soon and begin sending weapons to Ukraine. Ukraine is having a hard time fighting against Russia. The new law would give $26 billion to help Israel during times of war and provide help to people in Gaza. It would also give $8 billion to protect Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region from threats by China.
US officials have said that around $1 billion of the aid could be coming soon, and most of it will arrive in the next few weeks.
Senate leader Chuck Schumer said to The Associated Press that if Congress didn’t pass the aid, America would have had problems with the economy, politics, and military.

A man from the US has been given a life sentence in jail for raping and killing another American tourist and trying to kill her friend near a popular tourist spot in Germany.
A German court found Troy Philipp B, 31, guilty of attacking two tourists near Neuschwanstein Castle. He said he hurt one woman and then pushed her and her friend off a cliff in June 14, 2023.
He made friends with the two women and then convinced them to leave the public path.
On Monday, in a court in Kempten, Bavaria, Judge Christoph Schwiebacher said the person was very guilty in the case.
He said the person who committed the crime may not be allowed to get out of prison for at least 15 years. This is what usually happens to people who are given life sentences in Germany, according to Agence France-Presse news agency.
German government could not confirm who the victims were, but their family members said they were Eva Liu, 21, and Kelsey Chang, 22, who had graduated from the University of Illinois.
The man from Michigan tricked the two friends into leaving the Marienbruecke bridge, which is a favorite spot to see the fairytale castle.
He showed them a secret path and warned them that it would be hard to find the bridge.
Officials say he pushed Ms Liu down, raped and choked her, and then Ms Chang tried to stop him.
He forced Ms Chang into a very deep ravine and then attacked her friend, choking her with a belt and filming it.
After some hikers found Ms. Liu unconscious, he pushed her into the ravine.
Rescuers found the women on the mountain and they were taken to safety by helicopters. Ms Liu passed away in the hospital because of her injuries.
Ms Chang was very hurt, but she lived.
The person they were looking for was not caught until later that day, after a big search.
A person visiting the area saw that his face and neck had deep red scratch marks and said there was signs of a fight.
During the trial in February, the person on trial said he felt really bad about what he did and that he didn’t plan to do it. He also said he had child pornography.
In her obituary, Ms. Liu’s family said she was a smart student who loved baking, traveling, and music.
The court in Germany did not give out the full name of the person who killed someone because of privacy laws.
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria is 78 miles away from Munich and attracts over 1. 3 million tourists every year. -

Marcia Fudge, who is in charge of housing and cities, said she will leave her job on March 22nd with mixed feelings.
